And welcome to the June edition of Love Saltash magazine. We are really looking forward to getting to know and share more fantastic facts about what Saltash has to offer as we plan to publish monthly from this edition onwards. Hopefully you too will appreciate our increasing regularity and continue to look forward to reading your copy each month. We’ll be dropping 6000 of our 7000 monthly copies through letterboxes to make it as easy as possible for everyone to know what is going on. Saltash has a long tradition of community – centuries ago, before mass media entertainment, it was a hub to which people flocked to be together, whether that was for market from the 12th Century onwards; in connection with its role as the original seaport on the Sound; for spiritual inspiration – its churches date back to medieval times; and for good old fashioned partying - the Weary Friar in Saltash was founded in the 12th Century to provide rest for church builders! Last month’s very successful Mayfair built on this tradition and this month’s incredible Saltash Regatta has been running as a popular gathering since 1835, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It is widely known across the County as one of the most colourful riverside spectaculars. With it’s Under the Sea theme, and a brand-new paint bombing opportunity, this year should be the best yet! Community events only happen through the hard work and dedication of local volunteers, and Saltash is hugely fortunate to have so many. Read more about the indomitable Sue Hooper, recently

made a Freeman of the Town, and Young Citizens of the Year, Mia and Jack Rhodes, in the pages of the magazine. They are just two examples of an army of ordinary people stepping up to do outstanding work that benefits all of us. A few more who really captured our imagination and deserve our whole-hearted appreciation would be: Peter Clements, Saltash Citizen of the Year, whose championing of footpaths and rights of way around the town has been instrumental in delivering the much-needed pedestrian bridge at Carkeel Roundabout. Jon Foster who three years ago singlehandedly began clearing brambles and rubbish from the overgrown Coombe Woods, creating new pathways, benches and havens for wildlife, turning an eyesore into somewhere for everyone to enjoy. And Jean Dent who has stepped up once again to the office of Mayor, with David Yates as the new Deputy Mayor – just two of our dedicated unpaid town councillors who make such an effort to serve our community. To all our volunteers and those of you thinking of getting involved – Thank You! We so appreciate it!

IN BRIEF
GREAT EFFORTS BY JACK AND MIA Congratulations to brother and sister Jack and Mia Rhodes - not only for being named as Young Citizens of Saltash, but also for their fantastic fund-raising efforts for the Chestnut Appeal at Derriford Hospital. Before he passed away, Jack and Mia’s granddad Peter Belsher worked hard to raise awareness of prostate cancer. The siblings decided that they wanted to carry on their grandad’s work and they decided to set up a stall on their other grandparents’ driveway to raise money for the Chestnut Appeal, selling loomband bracelets, cookies and drinks. Mia calculated that by the end of the summer holidays they would raise just under £49. However, they smashed this target and with the help of friends donating by the ice bucket challenge, raised a total of £155. Since this they have - with the help of family and friends - sold hand crafted goodies at local craft fairs and to date have raised a grand total of £665! Their next fund raising event is at Saltash Regatta on June 17. Why not look out for them at the Regatta and help Jack and Mia to raise even more for The Chestnut Appeal • The Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer was founded in 1999 at Derriford Hospital. Since then it has gone on to be at the forefront of prostate cancer care right across the region. The charity support the very latest in treatments and technology that wouldn’t be available without community fundraising and they rely on donations from the public. SALTASH MUM’s CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
7
health news A Saltash mum is spearheading a campaign to promote greater awareness of cancer symptoms in children and young adults.
"Being more aware and diagnosing early can potentially mean saving a child's life because effective treatment can be started as soon as possible."
Michelle Morritt believes that GPs and other health professionals would benefit from taking part in a 30 minute training programme devised by CLIC Sargent, which helps identify the early symptoms of child cancer.
Michelle has successfully managed to get the full support of the two GP Health Practice managers in Saltash, and both are advising their GPs and health staff to use the information packs and the 30 minute training course.
Michelle's daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with pre B lymphoblastic lymphoma - a cancer which is treated in the same way as Leukaemia - in May 2015, just after her 15th birthday. Charlotte, who is now 17, had suffered back pains for several months in early 2015 and been referred to physiotherapists by GPs. The pain persisted and when Charlotte started to lose feeling in her legs Michelle decided to take her to Derriford A&E. An MRI scan revealed that Charlotte had a tumour wrapped around her spinal chord. She was immediately rushed to Bristol Children's Infirmary when she underwent surgery and an extensive course of chemotherapy. She now has a number of rods and pins in her spine. Michelle said: "It was devastating to be told that Charlotte had cancer. It's the words that no-one ever wants to hear - but 11 families do every day in the UK. "It has blown my family apart and we are on a speeding rollercoaster, waiting for it to slow down. It has been like that for two years so far out of a two and half year treatment plan for Charlotte." Michelle is now campaigning in Cornwall and Devon to put pressure on local GP surgeries, clinics, councils, school and colleges to take part in the CLIC Sargent training programme. "I am asking them what their training programmes are for cancer in children and young people.” explained Michelle, “Suggesting they display the free downloads of information booklets and posters in their waiting rooms, communal areas and in their offices. “
"They have also advised that the course be put into the GP Magazine which circulates across Devon & Cornwall," said Michelle. "It has also been rolled out to NHS Kernow as a training resource. Thank you to Tina (Portview) and Lynn (Saltash HC)." Charlotte is now doing her A levels at saltash.net. Michelle said that the school are fully supportive offering talks to their staff and age appropriate pupils to make them aware of what to look for and how to check. "The school is excellent at providing the care and support their students need as they have dealt with this with numerous pupils. Michelle continued, "I've gained ground in Saltash and hope local people can help me to gain more and support their children. A talk can be arranged for GPs and health professionals, schools, parents and other groups. "It's all about awareness - not in any way to be challenging to the medical profession. It's about a community asking: 'What is your local area's knowledge of child cancer and how do they train to update this knowledge'. "Information and training can be downloaded for free and can be accessed easily," she added. The GP 30 minute course has been developed by CLIC Sargent and Teenage Cancer Trust and developed in partnership with the Royal College of GPs. It can be accessed at http://bit.ly/ElearningforGPs. Annual Meeting to Elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor The Annual Meeting of the Town Council was held on Tuesday 16th May 2017. The first item of business at this meeting was to elect the Mayor followed by the election of the Deputy Mayor. Mrs Hilary Frank, the outgoing Mayor who did not stand for election to the Town Council, undertook her last official duty as she took the Chair for the election of the Mayor. Following the election she bestowed the Chain of Office on her successor, Councillor Jean Dent. With the new Mayor in the Chair the meeting moved on to the election of the
Deputy Mayor with Councillor David Yates taking the seat next to the Mayor. The new Mayor then awarded the Past Mayor’s Badge to Mrs Frank, offering her the thanks of the council for all her work during her year in office. This being an election year the ceremonial installation of the Mayor (which will include the traditional tossing of coins and fruit) will be held at a later date which will be announced shortly.

Saltash announces new Freeman of the Town
On the 18th April 2017, Saltash Town Council awarded the Freedom of the Town to Councillor Mrs Sue Hooper MBE. The award, which has only been conferred on eighteen individuals since its inception in 1935, was given in recognition of the outstanding service that Councillor Hooper has given to the town over her thirty years as Councillor.
The award ceremony was attended by many representatives from groups and events Sue has supported over the years, nineteen people who have served as Mayor of Saltash, the four Freemen and current Councillors. In a moving speech of thanks, Sue paid tribute to her husband John, daughter Kaye and granddaughters Florence and Rose, who both gave musical performances as part of the ceremony.
As Councillor Hooper did not stand for re-election, the town council meeting on the 18th April was the final meeting of an illustrious career, during which she served as Mayor for four terms; 1991 - 1992, 1996 -1997, 2004 – 2005 and 2009 - 2010. In 2004 she was awarded with an MBE for her dedicated work within the community of Saltash, and in 2008 she was made a Bard for her services to Cornwall. Saltash.net’s U13s crowned as County
Champions
Saltash.net’s U13 Boys’ football team have been crowned County Champions after securing a 2-1 win over West Cornwall champions Mounts Bay Academy in a thrilling final. Goals came from Jenson Bryan and Leighton Poolman, who scored the winner in the third minute of stoppage time, sendingw the saltash.net-supporting crowd wild. The final is the fifth game in this competition which started in January, so it really is a huge achievement. Both schools were praised by the FA for their ‘reputation county wide as strong footballing schools,’ as well as their conduct, attitude and style of play. The great support and following from saltash.net parents who had made the journey to St Blazey for the final and who have supported the team fantastically for the past two years, was acknowledged, which was testament to the support they give to the boys and the school. The championship win follows the same team’s agonising defeat in the County Final last year. Team coach Mr Budd was very proud of the students. “Reaching finals in successive years is an incredible achievement for these boys, and represents a fantastic effort. The boys are ecstatic after last year’s final defeat, and huge congratulations go to them,” he said.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents enabling your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs and make decisions, if you are not able to do so. Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident or lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a Lasting Power of Attorney would be invaluable. You are not legally obligated to have a LPA in place, similarly there is no obligation to have a will or a life insurance policy, but if you don’t, things could be very difficult and expensive for your family and loved ones.

SALTash’S NEW
COMMUNITY RESPONDER
Saltash is to benefit from the services of a new Community First Responder with SWASFT.
Campus support assistant from Cornwall College Saltash, Kevin Oak, who is also the lead first aider at the College, first realised he wanted to focus on helping others after completing first aid training at work. “I didn’t know too much about it before the course, but the training was excellent and really gave me the interest to learn more,” he said. Kevin then applied to South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) where he had an interview before completing three full days of training and three third manning shifts. This included a night shift, day shift and rapid response vehicle shift where he went out with the crew observing and assisting on call outs. “The training was fantastic and we covered a range of areas including Basic Life Support, Defibrillation, Oxygen, Paediatrics, Burns and situation scenarios,” Kevin continued. “My position is a voluntary position and I’ll be committing to being on call at least 12 hours per week. If someone calls for an ambulance in the Saltash area, whilst the ambulance is on the way to them I will be dispatched to attend the scene to monitor the situation, do basic observations and CPR if it’s required.” Kevin said he is really excited about his new role and
“can’t wait to start responding in Saltash. To think I can provide additional care to the people of Saltash is a privilege. I am grateful for the opportunity the NHS have given me,” he added. SWASFT covers one of the most rural areas of the UK and are committed to providing the population of the South West with the highest standard of out-of-hospital care, according to Community Responder Officer for Cornwall, Julia Cleeland-Smith. “Every day, Responders from across the South West attend emergencies within their local communities,” she said. “Sometimes the difference is providing reassurance prior to the arrival of an ambulance; sometimes it is saving someone’s life.” Head of Cornwall College Saltash, Margaret Butfield, said that at Saltash “we pride ourselves with our connection with the community”. “Kevin, our campus support assistant, has embraced the opportunity to give his time helping others in need. We are all incredibly proud of him.” For more information on all courses available across The Cornwall College Group visit www.cornwall.ac.uk or call 0330 123 2523. YOUTH VOICE
17
students bound for morocco
By Rose Bonner, Secretary of Saltash Town Youth Council and student at saltash.net community school.
In the month of April, there have been some inspiring events that the youth of Saltash have been involved with. Students from Saltash.net are taking part in the World Challenge to Morocco in July. It is fair to say that the participants have conducted an abundance of events to fundraise for the challenge including car washes, sponsored walks and quizzes to fund the trip that costs £2000 each. In April, a fashion show was organised at Saltash.net, which included a runway with models wearing clothes that the audience could buy, as well as clothes that were displayed on rails around the hall from popular clothing stores such as Seasalt, Next and Fat Face that the audience also had the opportunity to purchase. The evening turned into a huge success as Jasmine Leslie, one participant taking part in the challenge, stated that it went ‘really well, I am sure we have made a lot of sales’. This unique and atmospheric fundraising event will pay off as the students will be helping the community in the first week of the trip through renovating schools and sports facilities to allow more girls to attend the school as this is a prominent issue at the moment. In the second week, the students will be trekking the Atlas Mountains. Furthermore, it is evident that local organisations have
been thriving with providing the youth with opportunities in April. Last month, members and staff of The Core Youth Project and Junkyard Skatepark had the opportunity to undertake first aid and food hygiene training. The first aid training was delivered by Plymouth Sports Charity and all the young people who took part worked really hard and passed the course with flying colours. The Food Hygiene training was offered so that young people could help out at events and prepare and serve food safely. The participants even had to do a test at the end to see what information was remembered. On both training days the young people showed pure dedication and commitment to their roles as volunteers and they were a real credit to both youth projects. Charlotte Carpenter, youth work co-ordinator of The Core said: “It was a pleasure as staff to work alongside them”. Ultimately, the young people of Saltash continue to show consistent passion and dedication within the town, showing how they contribute to and maintain the vibrancy of Saltash.

SALTASH MAYFAIR
SALTASH.NET GETS SPONGED Saltash.net was delighted to take part in the May Fair fun recently, with staff and students running a stall at the event.
The stall also held a lucky dip and sold cakes baked by staff, as well as freshly made popcorn, created by Mr Taylor on the morning of the Fair.
Students attending the Fair were encouraged to, ‘Settle a beef here,’, with the opportunity to sponge a teacher for just 50p!
Mr Taylor, who organised the stall, was delighted with how the school reached out to the community. “This year’s May Fair proved to be a community event in the truest sense of the word, with involvement from staff and students who, proudly wearing their school uniform, gave up an entire day to represent saltash. net. With over £140 raised and a Year 7 claiming to feel more confident than ever after helping out for the day, this really was a successful event!” he said.
Staff members Miss Sayer, Mr Howgate, Ms Rogers, Mr Payne and Mr Taylor were among the staff victims of a sponging, all in the name of community fun. The fantastically designed saltash.net ‘stocks’ were created by head of art Mr Romain, who himself managed to avoid a sponging.

Future of local Health and Care Services An inter-agency group has been formed, chaired by the chief executive of Cornwall NHS Partnership Trust, to drive forward local developments. This was requested during recent consultations and we are delighted that our voice has been heard. Three meetings have been held already (amazing progress!), with local community representation provided by our Chair, Peter Thistlethwaite, Councillor Hilary Frank, Dr Birte Morris from the Health Centre and Joyce Mepstead, Chair of St Barnabas League of Friends.
We are batting for a long-term role for St Barnabas Hospital as an integrated Health and Wellbeing Centre, for better urgent care/minor injuries services in the town, and for better facilities for our surgeries. Our fear was that locally provided care would be denuded because of NHS cutbacks. An effective voice for patients and carers is vital at this time of change. Community Enterprises PL12 has supported this through patient groups at the surgeries, and by participations in consultations. Do join us if you have an interest in this, or alternatively, join your local surgery patient group.
23 We pick up and drop off passengers around Saltash. Plus, on all trips going west on the A38, we can stop at Tideford and Landrake too. For trips the other way, we are happy to collect you for a small extra charge.

IN BRIEF
MADAGASCAR JUNIOR AT SALTASH.NET By Isobel Whittam and Corlissa Waites (Love Saltash saltash.net Student Reporters) As you may know the upcoming summer performance is Madagascar Junior. The production will be shown between Tuesday June 6 and Friday June 9, all shows start at 7pm. Students from Saltash.net and our feeder primary schools are involved, with actors and actress ageing from Year 5 to Year 9. The first half of the performance shows off the range of talented students participating, whereas the second half is the Madagascar Junior production (this layout is similar to the one of Snow- White and the Seven Dwarfs shown in 2012). The Madagascar Junior production follows a similar story line to the first Madagascar film although a couple of changes have been made. Our production stars Ben
Layer (Year 6) as Alex the Lion, Brandon Esscot (Year 9) as Marty the Zebra, Sophie Williams (Year 9) as Gloria the Hippo, Spencer Dunn (Year 7) as Melman the Giraffe and Mia Sandy (Year 8) as King Julian. The four penguins are played by Jasmine Leslie (Skipper), Charlotte Spanner (Kowalski), Ellie Wanless (Private) and Lottie Ryder-Wearne (Rico). Tickets for the production are now on sale and can be purchased from the school’s main reception. The tickets are £3 per child and £5 per adult. Pleases note that it is advised to buy the tickets before the night. There are around 100 students involved and all of them are looking forward to performing in front of you. We hope to see you there as we assure you that this will be another stunning performance from Saltash.net.

volunteers lifeblood of saltash air cadet squadron
The cadets of No 335 (Saltash) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets are well known for their involvement in many community events in the local area; there are some 22 cadets at present led and supported by a willing band of adult volunteers. The volunteers have the option of service in uniform in either commissioned or non-commissioned roles or as civilian instructors. Here profiled are just three of the staff at 335 Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Warren Bowden Commanding Officer Day Job – Health and Safety Advisor. Warren wanted to give something back after serving in the Royal Air Force and joined the Air Training Corps as a civilian instructor in 2005. After two years, he applied for uniformed service and has never looked back. He has commanded the Squadron for nine years. Warren sees the opportunities offered to young people in the Air Cadets as endless and encourages cadets to grasp every opportunity the organisation offers. He delights in seeing cadets progress to a wide range of careers but always chuckles when ex cadets still address him as ‘Sir’. Civilian Instructor Leila McKenna - Training Officer Day Job – Third Year Student studying for a BEd in Education. Leila is an ex-cadet and so benefited from the experience that she believed the cadets shaped what she is today and always vowed to return as an adult volunteer. She joined the Squadron as a civilian instructor in 2016 and
was soon appointed the Squadron Training Officer which allows her to ensure that the cadets get the most benefit from the opportunities available to them. Leila relishes the opportunity for adult volunteers to undertake professional development courses and participate in both UK and overseas camps as well as shooting and adventure training. Leila intends to transfer to uniformed service when she completes her degree. Civilian Instructor Michael Watts – Instructor Day Job – Mechanical Fitter Michael is also an ex cadet who still cherishes the memory of being a member of the first 335 Squadron team to complete the Ten Tors Challenge. Joining the Royal Navy at 16 ½ he soon learned to adopt a ‘can-do’ attitude and was able to instill that ethos in his later career when training new oficers at Dartmouth and new recruits at HMS Raleigh. In 2016, 2 years after leaving the Royal Navy, Michael attended a 335 Squadron reunion and realised that he could bring his knowledge and experience to the Air Cadets and applied successfully to become a civilian instructor, a position where he feels he can use both his life and professional skills to good effect in encouraging and training young people. This short article has focused on just three of the staff who volunteer at 335 Squadron. Commanding Officer, Warren Bowden, was keen to emphasise the value of all of his team without whom the squadron would not function. He said: “We are better placed than many units for staff – some run on bare minimums.” If you think you would like to help young people fullfil their dreams then visit www.aircadets.org to find out more about adult service. ladies on top
The Ladies A crew from Saltash-based Caradon Gig Club triumphed in the World Pilot Gig Championships for the second year running when they came home with gold. There was also success for the Men’s Veteran’s A team who won their class again while the Mens A Team finished a creditable third out of 137 crews. It was the fourth year running they have finished in the top three. Held on the Isles of Scilly at the end of April, it was the 28th year of the championships. Ladies Team member Kate Bourn said: “I really struggle with nerves and because we
were the title holders, it created that much more pressure. Last year we were the underdogs but this year we were being gunned for.” An incredible 144 ladies crews and 140 men crews from all over England, Holland and as far as America competed in tough conditions. The conditions were tough with strong winds and choppy seas resulting in some crews having to withdraw from the competition. “Our plan for the final was just to get out in front and control the race for the first half and then put our foot down which is what we did,” Kate continued.

MOTHER & SOUND DAUGHTER
HEALING PAINTERS
Local artist Teresa Wicksteed recently qualified as a Sound Healing Practitioner with the UK College of Sound Hearing. Her practice relies primarily on the voice: the most simple, powerful and easily accessible instrument. Recent scientific research into sound has shown that certain sound frequencies can speed up natural healing processes. As the body is around 70 per cent water, sound waves easily flow through and re-balance internal issues. During treatment, the client experiences a feeling of very deep relaxation: in this balanced state, it is easy for healing to occur on many levels.
Teresa’s healing room on the Rame Peninsula, adjacent to Polhawn Fort, is about 30 minutes drive from Saltash. The sound of the sea, wind and birds are a backing track to her sound healing session. She offers individual healing sessions of an hour, charging £30 for the first appointment and £40 thereafter. Teresa said: “From case studies, I have found that clients have been helped with conditions such as sleep problems, anxiety, raised blood pressure and depression. “Using Sound Healing as a complementary adjunct to more traditional medical treatment releases emotion and trauma, changes negative to more positive thought patterns, eliminates physical pain and has a calming effect.” Teresa is also qualified to practice Distant Healing. Sound Healing is a complementary, holistic treatment. It is non-invasive, deeply relaxing and works on physical, emotional and energetic levels. For more information visit www.teresawicksteed.co.uk or call 07968 941854.
Suzanne Jones and Shari Hills have long shared their passion for painting, teaching and exhibiting together. They will be showing their watercolours at Ashtorre Rock from 26 May to 6 July. Suzanne first became known for her large, loose flower paintings. In more recent years she has been exploring mixed media collages and coastal themes. Shari, who teaches watercolour at Ashtorre Rock, is excited by the natural environment and its wildlife and intrigued by the spontaneous effects of wet into wet watercolour. Both artists also share a love of clay and you will be able to see more of Shari’s work in both media at Tamar Valley Centre from 2 September to 10 September as part of Drawn to the Valley Open Studios. Ashtorre Rock, nestling under the Brunel Bridge [PL12 4GT] is open daily from 10 to 4, offering refreshments and unparalleled river views.

SUE HOOPER HONOURED
as FREEMAN
Sue Hooper MBE was awarded with a phenomenal accolade on April 18: Freedom of the Town. This historic and unique award is presented to a valued member in the community whom the town wishes to bestow an honour, which is certainly worthy of Sue Hooper. It is no wonder that Sue was presented with the award, as she has served the people of Saltash for over 30 years, and whilst she has officially stepped down from being a key member within the Saltash Town Council, she will continue to put the community first. Throughout Sue’s life, she has done a tremendous amount for the community of Saltash. Sue has had the great privilege of serving as Mayor of Saltash on four different occasions, and during that time, she was able to raise over £22,000 for worthy and local charities. Sue has raised and donated funding to numerous local organisations including Saltash Open Awards Centre, Saltash Fire Cadets, Saltash Children’s Appeal and Saltash Royal British Legion, to name a few as the list is endless. Memorably, Sue led fund raising teams to raise £20,000 for the Boscastle Flood Disaster, and she was able to gain funding for the Saltash residents who were flooded at that time and visited 100 affected local homes. In particular, the youth of Saltash have been a focus for Sue as she has always wished to offer as many opportunities as possible for young people – a drive that led to the formation of her own charity, Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation. Sue’s charity, which was founded in the late 1990s, raises money to fund young performers who are aspiring to follow their dreams. This only reflects Sue’s dedication and passion for helping the youth. Furthermore, Sue founded the Saltash Town Youth Council in 1992, which still serves as a unity for youth organisations to provide a plethora of opportunities and is now in its 25th year.
Many know Sue for her dedication, which has evidently been put into the conservation of the town. Sue was the founder of Saltash In Bloom where her and many other volunteers created new flower beds, made new floral roundabouts and more – all still blooming today Article by Rose around the town!
31
Bonner, proud granddaughter of Sue
In addition, Sue instigated and led the Saltash Town Council Memorial Peace Garden Project to honour and commemorate those who fought in the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts, which was opened in November 2015. Sue’s dedication, commitment and passion to supporting others is well known within the town, so much so that she was awarded a well-deserved MBE by the Queen in recognition of her exceptional contributions. On top of this, Sue was also made a Cornish Bard in 2009 for her outstanding services to Saltash and Cornwall. These achievements over the years have been a true reflection of the hard work that Sue has consistently put into Saltash. Barry Brooking, whose father, Alfred, received the same prestigious award in 1997 said: “I cannot think of anyone who has done more for the town of Saltash than Sue, not just in her civic work but in all the organisations she has served and helped. Her achievements have set the bar very high with regards to the criteria required to be made a Freeman.” Over the years and until this day, Sue has had a sincere, honest and strong voice for Saltash, speaking up and out where she has felt necessary. It is no doubt that Sue’s admirable spirit and generosity radiates the town – and that we have all benefitted from Sue’s love for and commitment to Saltash community.

SPORTS NEWS
ASHES GO DOWN FIGHTING Saltash put up a magnificent performance in the semi final of the RFU National Senior Vase - but in the end their hopes of appearing at Twickenham were dashed by Surrey side Farnham.
Saltash did not lie down, however, and unloaded the bench to give game time to all of the squad. It was the influence of the bench in a small way that meant they finished strongly.
The Ashes went down 32-21 in front of an estimated 1,000 spectators - more than 100 of whom had travelled to Surrey to support Saltash.
Young Saltash winger Greg Eatwell saved a ball from bobbling into touch by flicking it back in field to the surging run of full back Ryan Cruikshanks who sliced through the defence to score, with Reburn adding the extras for 32-14.
The crowd was treated to a feast of open rugby with Saltash more than matching their high-flying hosts in the first 30 minutes, but two converted tries saw Farnham take a 17-0 lead. Ashes fought back and got the reward for all their hard work when Shaun Crawford danced around three defenders to dive under the posts for Harrison Reburn to convert. Farnham went in 20-7 ahead at half time. The second half began in similar style with the visitors enjoying prolonged periods of possession and territory to be denied and the home side scored again to leave Saltash looking for miracles if they were to over-turn the lead. A fine move down the left from Farnham put flanker James Crabb over and after some consultation with his assistant referees, the referee confirmed the try and at 25-7 the home celebrations were gathering momentum. Farnham scored again Toby Salmon going over for a try, which he converted for 32-7 with just 12 minutes left.
Both full back and wing were involved again, as the visitors went straight back up the field again, with Cruikshanks returning the favour to give Eatwell some work to do, and, having brushed off several defenders, the 17 year old went over for his first senior try, giving the visiting fans something to cheer. Replacement Fly half Kieran Down added the conversion, but it was too little too late for the Cornish side who were left ruing missed chances in the first half and will have to try again next season. Farnham RUFC president Geoff Bond paid tribute to the Ashes. He said: “It was a terrific day culminating in a thrilling win for Farnham over classy Cornish contenders Saltash. If ever there was a day when rugby was the winner - this was it.

Shopping local is not just about ensuring that we have somewhere easy to get to when we run out of necessities. It is also about keeping wealth within the community – initiatives like the Bristol Pound have shown that by committing to spend money within a geographical region, we help create vibrant, creative and community minded thinking that benefits us all. And this enlightened thinking benefits, not just our attractive, vibrant high street; but also all those countless local households who we can support by supporting local trades and retailers.
The fantastic community businesses in the following pages are all based locally, and your support means the world to them.
The following pages are dedicated to those individuals who rely on their skills for their livelihoods – whether that is fixing a leaking tap, installing a kitchen, creating a fabulous up do, or sourcing great materials to improve the look of our homes, inside and out. Committing to preferring local services over ones that take our money out of the region, means that our pounds do go further – we pay the local electrician, he buys his meat from the local butcher, who in turn pays a local carpenter to fit his kitchen, who turns up at the Regatta and spends lots of money enjoying the day with his kids (as any parent will know, entertaining children out of the house means losing any profit in the process!) And, we have accountability! NO self respecting local trader is going to risk having rumours of poor quality or bad customer service going around the school gate, especially whilst their partner is standing there waiting to pick up the kids. So, at the risk of sounding like a politician, let’s vote with our hands and feet! Pick up the phone to call a local tradesman, and pop to the local shops to buy your necessities for the week. It might take a bit of an effort, some renewed thinking, and the breaking of a few habits – not the least overcoming our lemming-like leanings to be as busy as possible – but the future of our communities does lie in the buying behaviours of each and everyone of us.

ART NEWS
MORE THAN ART CELEBRATES 10 YEARS More Than Art celebrates 10 years of Bespoke Picture Framing in Saltash in June 2017. David and Sally started picture framing in their garage in 2002 when they also sold country and farmed themed pictures at agricultural shows. When they opened their first commercial premises in 2007, they started predominately retailing as a picture framing and photo canvas printing business, with local and British made Art & Crafts.
THE
In 2012, they had the opportunity to move into Saltash Town Centre where the Tea and Coffee Shop was a very welcome addition to the business. The business grew from just offering tea, coffee and cake to serving light lunches and afternoon teas. But in September 2014 David and Sally were involved in a car accident and because of injuries
sustained, they took the hard decision to close the previous business in September 2015. They can now be found in Victoria Lane (which they moved to in March 2016) where they have continued with the Picture Framing. In the past year amongst the many pictures they have framed, were Anniversary Corks. Medals and Submariner’s Hat Tallies, Honiton Lace Butterfly and Aboriginal art and many family keepsakes. The shop also sells Sally’s Jewellery, Handbags and Art Materials. They couldn’t part with their fabulous coffee machine from the Coffee Shop and the same complimentary tea or coffee is available to framing customers. They also have a meeting room available for hire.

YEAR 5 STUDENTS JOIN THE PARLIAMENT OF WISE OWLS
Year 5 students from across the local area visited saltash.net for a day of political fun and engagement, named the ‘Parliament of Wise Owls’. With the announcement of the upcoming General election, it seemed like the perfect time to help engage students from saltash.net’s partner primaries, helping to develop their political knowledge and understanding of the British political system. Organised by politics teacher and assistant head of Year 7 in saltash.net, Mrs Metters, and English and History teacher Miss Halliday, students were split into groups and given the task of creating their very own political party. Everything about their political party was entirely up to the students – its name, its logo, its policies and so on. Each group had to create a name for their political party, with an accompanying logo, slogan, party broadcast and party song! Among the parties created were the Eco-Savers Party, which had environmentally conscious policies, and the Welcome Party, which called for an open and tolerant society, which welcomed refugees. To create their party political broadcast, students were provided with paper puppets which they decorated as they saw fit, as well as being entrusted with a video camera to record their perfectly scripted ads!
A vote was held at the end of the afternoon to see who had impressed most, with Mrs Metters acting as Returning Officer to ensure that the vote was fair and democratic. The Environmental Protection Party (EPP) emerged victorious, thanks to their impressive posters and strong advert. The event also encouraged student leadership, with a number of saltash.net students from Years 7, 9 and 12 taking part; working with the visitors and exploring their own political ideas and understanding. Mrs Metters was delighted at the students’ attitude and commitment to the task. “It was fantastic to hear what thoughtful and well-considered ideas the Year 5 students spent the day coming up with. They may only be 9 or 10 years old, but they understand a large amount about the world into which they are growing and have clear ideas on how they would like their future society to be. “The day was incredibly positive, both in terms of political awareness and engagement, but also in terms of good fun! The Party Political Broadcasts and their wonderful puppet-actors were just wonderful! Well done Year 5. I think our future is safe in your hands!” she said.

WHY NOT TRY ZERO GRAVITY? Words by Emily Hunt
ZERO GRAVITY Like most Saltash mums, I’ve frequented Zero Gravity since my daughter was a baby. It’s always been a great meeting place on a Monday and Wednesday morning, where friends and I would let our babies crawl safely around the vast space in the hope they would wear themselves out and (please God) sleep through the night. Parents scrambled through the soft play zones unleashing their own inner child and when no one was looking, postpartum mums would bounce on trampolines testing their pelvic floors (or maybe that was just me). We found Zero Gravity to be one of the only wet weather venues in our town that enabled physical play in a social environment. Now our babies are toddlers, their independence in the space has grown. They bounce around, hurl themselves into foam pits, hang off bars and climb through the multi-storey ‘Velocity Play’ cage. Some children have now started preschool gymnastics, which my daughter loves and I watch enviously from the café. Here they learn fundamental gymnastic skills through structured playful activities. Beyond this, I had little knowledge of the full extent of Zero Gravity’s place in the Saltash community. Head coach, Mo Gregory founded Zero Gravity more than 10 years ago. Known then as the East Cornwall Trampoline Club, it provided recreational gymnastics, trampolining and fundamental coaching to primary school children within the Caradon area. Since then it has come on leaps and bounds (no pun intended) and due to demand has undertaken a series of changes to its location and premises. ‘Zero Gravity Academy of Gymnastics and Trampoline’ (its official title) is now permanently located on Gilston Road, Saltash. Affiliated to British Gymnastics and a registered charity, Zero Gravity has a strong and inclusive community ethos, ensuring they are accessible to all, regardless of age, gender or ability. They offer a range of structured activities and training programmes for individuals, schools (including CPD for teachers) and organisations across Devon and Cornwall. In other words, there is something for everyone. Zero Gravity have also worked

alongside occupational therapists, tailoring specific movement programmes for young people needing rehabilitation of motor skills or those facing challenges with the development of motor skills. As someone who has worked in education and therapeutic fields, I fully appreciate how valuable the healing affects of such programmes are for both physical and mental development of individuals. It’s a great asset to the Saltash community that such places exist. I personally used to be terrified of sport as a child. I was about as good at throwing a ball as I was at Quantum Physics, in fact I was probably better at the latter, but I loved the artistic disciplines as I’d forget I was taking part in sport at all. I longed for a place like Zero Gravity where you could enjoy the facilities for recreational use, then once confident, I may have considered training to a more serious, maybe even competitive level. As an adult observer of gym classes, I can see first hand, how each participant’s confidence is growing as the courses progress. For all we know, we may have a future Olympian in our midst. For a full outline of courses and sessions on offer, check out the website below. A little tlc for
tamar valley ‘Visit, Give, Protect’ is the message from Tamar TLC, as they launch their Visitor Gifting scheme later this month in the Tamar Valley. The new charitable incorporated organisation – Tamar TLC – was set up last autumn to raise, manage and distribute funds for the benefit of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB) bordering Devon and Cornwall. Chair of Tamar TLC, Alex Midlen, said: “The Tamar Valley is known for its mining heritage, ancient fields, hedgerows, woodlands and the beautiful River Tamar. To conserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Tamar Valley for us, and future generations, to enjoy costs money and takes time. You can help this vital task by supporting Tamar TLC.” From 31st May wherever you see the Tamar Tender Loving Care logo you will be able to donate to projects supported by Tamar TLC. Projects planned this year will focus on nature, heritage, trails and education, and will include planting some of the Valley’s delightful heritage
daffodil varieties and improving access to the AONB. Local businesses that have already signed up to support the Visitor Gifting scheme this season are Taphill Takeaway, Bere Alston; Tamar Trails Centre, Gulworthy; Harford Bridge, Peter Tavy; The Old Rectory, Gulworthy; Deer Park Farm, Luckett; Old Solomon’s Farm, Latchley and Tamar Valley Centre, Drakewalls. Corinna Woodall, Tamar Valley AONB manager, is delighted to be supporting Tamar TLC: “The Tamar Valley is a wonderful place to explore and enjoy for all ages, and it takes true partnership working to keep it that way. I wish the Visitor Gifting scheme every success and look forward to giving back some TLC into this much cherished landscape”. If you are a business and would like to get involved, or would like further information on Tamar TLC and its Visitor Gifting scheme, please contact Charlotte Dancer at the Tamar Valley AONB – cdancer@tamarvalley.org. uk. THE CORE
CAFE @ THE CORE GETS A NEW MANAGER
Toni Thorn
Words by Charlotte Carpenter
The Café@The Core has a new manager!
Toni Thorn, who lives in Saltash, has had plenty of experience in the catering industry. She ran her own catering van and also ran a sweet shop in Looe with her husband, Steve. She’s very committed to the overall ethos of The Core and is looking forward to getting stuck in with the local community and young people. The cafe has become a fantastic resource for Saltash, attracting people from all walks of life, whether it’s parents with pre-schoolers, students, or knit and knatter groups! All are catered for! The atmosphere is lovely and friendly, and little ones are always welcome with a children’s menu and a great toddlers’ corner to keep them busy, while you make the most of the delicious Cornish coffees. The cafe was originally set up to bring in much needed funds to the youth centre to keep the doors open for the young people of Saltash. However, it has exceeded all expectations and become a central hub for the
whole community. The menu has been designed to be varied and suit all tastes, by offering a range of food and beverages, including doorstep sandwiches, paninis, chips, fresh coffee, cakes, full English breakfasts, and a new addition to the menu, Greek salad with pitta… yum! With discounts for students and young people, The Core works hard to keep everything at a reasonable price. The cafe is open exclusively to young people twice a week after school on Mondays and Thursday from 3pm to 5pm, where young people can enjoy free wi-fi and pool. There are also free hot chocolate and toast on offer to those feeling peckish, along with other snacks and drinks available to buy. Youth workers are available too, to offer advice and lend an ear, should you need to chat. There are also many opportunities for volunteering with The Core and all the volunteers are offered training, food hygiene certificates and a DBS check. It’s a lovely, supportive place to work, so if you’re looking for a new challenge, get in touch with Toni on 01752 843176

JUNKYARD SKATEPARK
CHOCK-A-BLOCK EASTER SKATE JAM
Junkyard Skatepark played host to their annual ChockA-Block Easter skate jam on Saturday April 8, with an amazing turn out for the half term event. Young skaters turned up for the day to make their mark on the bowl section of the skatepark, with the Under 10’s jam being one of the highlights of the day. Seeing such youngsters skate with raw talent, all the while supporting one another, is the reason why Junkyard does what it does. Some kids that entered even came from as far as Stroud and Essex! Throughout the day there were three different competitions, age 10 and under, age 16 and under and then the 16 and over, with all of the categories’ skaters absolutely killing it. Along with trophies to be handed out, there were plenty of prizes and Easter eggs to be won too. There was great support from the Junkyard Youth Committee, with many of the members helping out throughout the day.
One of the young people involved had never been to a Skate Jam before, and it was a delight to see how much he enjoyed it and was impressed by the skills of the skaters around him. Robert Ayton, from comedy skate YouTube channel, SkateWine was down for the day to commentate on the Jam. Dressed as Willy Wonka, he conducted interviews and even got interviewed himself by resident skateboarder Lola T. He took to the role effortlessly and had a great time supporting the Jam. You can find his interviews with local riders on YouTube by searching SkateWine. There’s already excitement for next year’s Chock-ABlock Jam, with the Junkyard team wanting to say a big well done to all the winners and those who took park this year. They also couldn’t have done it without their volunteers and the sponsors of the event, Birdhouse, Salon, Venture, Mini Logo, SkateWine, SourceSkate, Skate Warehouse and Shiner Distributions.

Striving for a SMARTer future After many months of collaborative work, Dobwalls Primary School, Landulph Primary School, Liskeard School and Community College, Looe Community Academy, saltash.net community school, and Trewidland Primary and Pre-School came together in April to form the South East Cornwall Multi Academy Regional Trust: SMART.

Festival NEWS
ALL SET FOR PORT ELIOT
The summer is on the horizon, the festival goers will soon gather around St Germans on July 27 to 30, all headed to one of the most exciting events of the year for the small Cornish town: Port Eliot Festival. One of the UK’s most original, magical, bohemian, bookish, colourful, musical, comical and creative festivals returns to tempt you with a huge line up of music, comedy and literary giants, plus workshops, adventures and activities to keep you busy in the downtime. Founded by Jago Eliot, the son of the late 10th Earl of St Germans, Peregrine Eliot, the festival began in 2002 as a small literary festival. It has since grown in numbers, with 2016’s event attracting the maximum capacity of 7,000 festival goers. This cap on visitors allows everyone more space to spread out their tents and enjoy a comfortable weekend in the idyllic location of the Port Eliot estate. This year boasts music from the legendary singer-
songwriter Nick Lowe and Port Eliot regular DJ Andrew Weatherall, comedy from English comedian Jeremy Hardy, words by Booker Prize shortlisted novelist Michele Roberts, and excitingly, a brand new poetry stage. You can expect much of the same fun and games as previous years, including workshops on headdress making and botanical illustration, as well as getting to grips with the great outdoors by learning some survival skills and going for a wild swim. There’s great focus on families and activities for the little ones with a forest school for the kids, a wild woodland and a summer ball for all to attend. However, if you mums and dads are getting a bit tired of entertaining, there’s even a spa provided by Kernow Springs where you can put your feet up, enjoy a quick sauna or some spa treatments and unwind. From music to books, food to fashion, science to swimming and comedy to the Flower and Fodder show, Port Eliot is not one to be missed.

Double Denim Double Denim - Alternative Indie Pop Rock Vocalist Chelsea Orme-Williams exhibits a voice that boasts a centred, controlled power alongside a gentle fragility wrapped loosely in a dreamy starlit darkness. Too profound for you? No worries, this enthralling performance is slap bang in the middle of an alternative indie rock four piece that will hold you steadily in place, with dreamy glistening guitar mixed into a wholly washy but controlled sound, but not without drive that gladly kicks up the dirt when appropriate.
Having received rave reviews from audiences all across the South West as they tour their way through pubs, bars and clubs, it’s apparent this isn’t going to be a performance any of us see coming.
