TOWN MESSENGER

Message from the Mayor of Saltash, Councillor Jean Dent

The new Town Council van, with Jim Virgo, Grounds and Premises Warden and Jason Ward, one of the Town and Waterfront Wardens.

Saltash Town Council has been very busy through the last few months. I know it looks as though the station building still looks the same. In the background Cllr Richard Bickford and his team have been working hard to put together the background work of grant raising, deciding exactly what we want the interior to look like and how we can make the building and grounds generate sufficient revenue money to pay for its upkeep. We have had many letters of praise regarding the Waterside and how well it looks now. The Waterfront and Town Wardens are keeping it looking spick and span and are now working in other parts of the town. You may have seen the van around town carrying them around to other areas to work to keep our town looking good and safe. Devolution continues apace. Down by the river we are getting closer to taking over parts of the area from Cornwall Council. We are hoping to have a lease for the garages and workshop by Longstone Park for the

wardens and town premises manager to use. In the fairly near future you may see the Maurice Huggins Room having a new disabled toilet built at the side to make it usable for all of the community. If you have any ideas as to what the future of the building might be please get in touch. We are also awaiting a lease for Victoria Gardens to add to our portfolio of things we think we can look after better than Cornwall Council! As for Mayoral events Bill and I have been out and about as usual. Wonderful concerts, great coffee mornings, a youth panel at Saltash.net, Age Concern Harvest Festival, the blessing of the Maritime Cadets flags, a visit to Saltash Heritage to see the Toc H banners that have been conserved and we are anticipating a SEA initiative to cut back on plastic waste by getting local cafes and businesses to re-fill water bottles to avoid always buying a new bottle of water. Busy times!

News from Saltash Town Council Konsel an dre Essa

Services Committee

Saltash Town Council through its Services Committee is responsible for all operational matters within the Town Boundaries Currently Cornwall Council have responsibility for many Services including the upkeep of grass verges, pathways green spaces, litter bin emptying, rubbish collection as well as fly tipping etc. some of which are non-statutory. Cornwall Council has had to make considerable savings and remain within the financial limits imposed by Central Government. This has led to Cornwall Council devolving non-statutory services to town and parish Councils. In 2014 Saltash Council set up a devolutions options group to consider how best Saltash Town Council could benefit from this. Since that time STC have taken on and opened Belle Vue toilets, Alexandra Square toilets, Longstone Park toilets and the Waterfront toilets which might have been closed by Cornwall Council in a cost cutting programme.

Your Town Council

In an effort to improve our environment the Town Council approved the employment, on a trial basis, of 4 Town and Waterfront wardens with their salaries paid from S106 funding, not from the council tax. Saltash Town Council through its Services arm are in in discussions with Cornwall Council to take on grass cutting, maintenance of grass verges, street furniture, footpath maintenance etc. in an effort to raise standards and achieve ‘value for money’ Though this will take time, Saltash Town Council are committed to improving the overall appearance of Saltash, and the Services Committee are reviewing all contracts to achieve this aim, ultimately devolving all non-statutory services back to Saltash. The Services Committee Chairman, Councillor John Brady, would welcome any constructive comment from residents during the negotiation stages with Cornwall Council in order for Saltash Town Council to get ‘best value’.

#SALTFEst CROWDFUNDER ANNOUNCeD

Rallidae Productions is a local community business offering professional videography, photography, and event management, as well as exploring creative filmmaking opportunities. Owner, Matt Coot is a former Saltash Town Councillor, former library manager at Saltash. net Academy Trust, and is a writer and filmmaker. Matt is about to embark upon an MA in Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice at Plymouth College of Art and is launching a new project called #SaltFest. The project aims to create a series of events in Saltash in 2018 to support the creative arts as well as local community groups, charities and businesses and Matt is hoping to use various fundraising streams to make the events a success. He has just launched a crowdfunding project which goes live on November 1 and be found at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/saltfest-community-event

TRAINEE SAILORS LEND THEIR SUPPORT TO ELWELL WOODS

Trainee sailors from HMS Raleigh have planted daffodils and bluebells in an area of Saltash used by members the public. The group lent their support to the Saltash Waterside Residents Association at Elwell Woods, where they also cut back brambles and overgrowth. HMS Raleigh instructor Petty Officer Ricky AbramGiles said: “These trainees are part of Crean

Division, our rehabilitation unit for anyone who has suffered injury or illness during training. It’s good for them to have a break from their day-to-day routine at HMS Raleigh and great to reestablish links between HMS Raleigh and Saltash.” Some of the trainees were able to bring skills learnt in their civilian life to the project. Recruit Toby Ranner, aged 19, from Cambridge, previously undertook groundwork for music festivals and also worked in landscape gardening. He said: “I’ve been using the power tools to clear areas around the site. It’s nice to come back and do something like this.” Recruit Luke Belshaw has experience of working on an allotment for his Duke of Edinburgh award. The 20-year- old, from Durham, said: “I’ve been hands-on showing the others what to do. Being in the Royal Navy and helping out the community is one of the best things.” The area, now known as Elwood Woods, was originally used to store construction plant for the road bridge over the River Tamar. It was closed to the public and forgotten about for over 50 years, until the project giving it a new lease of life was started in 2009. A grant from the National Lottery helped to transform the neglected wasteland into two acres of peaceful community woodland with the iconic Cornish Cross forming the centrepiece of the project. Jim Ellison, Chairman of the Saltash Waterside Association said: “The residents association have undertaken quite a lot of projects, down by the waterside particularly, but this was the biggest project we ever had. The area was opened in 2013 and it was passed back to Cornwall Council. As a residents association we still try to do a bit of maintenance. The Raleigh team has been great. I think they’ve quite enjoyed helping.”

IN BRIEF

SCOUT GROUP POSTAL SERVICE

The second Saltash Scout Group Christmas Postal Service will once again start on Monday 20 November. It is part of a nationwide scheme to raise money for scouting, and help local people cut down on the price of posting Christmas cards to their friends living close by. Post Boxes are made by the Scouts and are stationed inside various shops, with kind permission of the shop owners. This year you can find them in Saltash News, Pigletts, and The Bookshelf on Fore Street; and Spars at Mote Park, St Stephens Road, and New Road. Members of the public can put cards, addressed within Saltash only and money (25p a card) in the boxes. The last collection day will be Saturday 16th December, giving the Scouts a week to deliver the cards in time for the big day.

UPDATE ON ST BARNABAS HOSPITAL

The Minor Injuries Unit and the beds at St Barnabas Hospital have been closed for about a year now, with no immediate prospect of reopening. The NHS in Cornwall has set up a group to look at the future pattern of services in the town, with community representatives including Patients, League of Friends, and councillors. The next step will be for the NHS to undertake a formal public consultation about the future of St Barnabas. This will affect almost everyone living in Saltash and nearby so it is important that local people continue to stay informed and get involved. There are opportunities to become members of the Friends of St Barnabas, and to join the patient participation groups at Saltash surgeries. The Friends can also be supported at their Christmas Fair held on Saturday 24 November from 10am12 noon at the St Barnabas Hospital Day Centre, Higher Port View.

DON’t MISS THE POLICE AREA CHOIR

11

If you are quick you may just catch an amazing musical evening with the Plymouth Area Police Choir at Saltash Wesley Church, Glebe Avenue on Friday October 27 at 7pm. The 40 strong choir formed in 1972 consists of serving Police Officers, retired officers, special Constables, Police staff and members with no affiliation who have a proven musical ability. Musical Director Brian Gerry said: “We are really looking forward to performing for the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation once again, and we are delighted to sing many familiar songs at the concert, including songs from the movies and shows”. As usual there will be gifted supporting guest artists. Concert organiser, Sue Hooper, announced: “The Foundation trustees are thrilled to welcome back the Plymouth Area Police Choir once again; we have many friends, past and present within the choir and musically go back many years.” The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation has provided many thousands of pounds to young people over the past 17 years to aid them in their performing arts studies and purchasing instruments. STUDENT

REPORTERS

By Isobel Whittam

Little Shop of Horrors Our last production, Madagascar Jr. went off with a bang. All the students involved (primary and secondary) enjoyed it and so did the audience. But as winter draws closer an exciting new production is in development. We are proud to announce that saltash.net’s next performance will be ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The show is a comedy horror, which includes plenty of fun songs. Older readers may recall the great movie version which starred Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. It is about a shy flower shop assistant who comes across a plant which only feeds on human blood or flesh. With an intriguing story line and fun, memorable songs, Little Shop of Horrors is a fun musical for all. Rehearsals are well under way, and reports suggest

the production is coming on nicely. Rehearsals are twice a week after school and the cast and large chorus are all very enthusiastic. Everyone is enjoying meeting new people and sharing their love of musical theatre. The cast ranges from year 7 to 12, including familiar faces from previous productions. In an imaginative bit of staging, the cast will be spilt in two, with one half performing on the Tuesday and Wednesday and the other half performing on the Thursday and Friday. The ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ production will be shown just before February half-term. The cast are all working very hard and are excited for the performance week. Watch this space for more information and dates coming soon.

Growth Mindset

Teaching and learning at saltash.net never stand still! This term students have begun to see a range of new wall displays introducing the importance of having a good mentality about themselves and their potential- a “Growth Mindset”. Teachers in all lessons have been adapting their language and teaching styles to encourage students to think about growing their abilities that with hard work and practice, rather than believing they have fixed talents given out at birth.

Teachers will also coach each other in the “Growth Mindset” philosophy, with the aim of making all students show the 3 P’s- Perseverance, Passion and Pride. So far, the new displays have attracted a lot of attention. “The posters really stand out and make you think about what you can do”, said one Y9 student. “I think it’s right that we can all get better at something if we work hard at it”, said another.

New School Uniform As some of you may already know, Ms Littledyke (Head Teacher) has made changes to improve the school’s pride in presentation. This includes the new school uniform. Previously the uniform consisted of a blue polo shirt, black trousers or skirt and a black jumper with the school logo embroidered on it. Then last Easter students were given 4 options, option 1 was to keep the original uniform, and then options 2, 3 and 4 were new designs for the school uniform. The majority of students chose option 2, consisting of a pale blue

shirt, black trousers or skirt, a tie and a blazer with the school logo embroidered on the pocket. Students feel that the new uniform makes them feel smarter and have said it is comfortable. Many students say that they think that it is a great improvement and that they love the new change. Some parents even emailed in to say how smart they thought the new uniform looked. This change seems to be a great success and now we are excited to see how pride in presentation will help improve our work.

ELECTION NEWS Last month Love Saltash published a story about Sheila Lennox-Boyd as part of a series on getting to know about the four Cornwall Councillors who are representing Saltash at a regional level. As Sheila is also standing for election to the Saltash Town Council for the vacant Saltash South Ward seat, decided on October 26, we thought

readers might like to know a little bit about the backgrounds of the other two candidates. All three candidates are from that remarkable bunch of women in the town who give so much time and energy to improving the lives of others, so for one reason or another, they are all deserving of your vote.

HELEN HARRINGTON Helen Harrington, standing as an Independent Candidate, has lived in Saltash for the past seventeen years. She has two children, her younger daughter now being in her final year of university training, an accolade which Helen is very proud of and contributes to the excellent support she received at saltash.net and Bishop Cornish Primary School. Helen ran a job club in Saltash Guildhall and was responsible for frontline jobcentre delivery at Saltash, Looe and Liskeard. She has worked for the last three years as a medical receptionist in the NHS, and regularly volunteers for Help 4 Heroes and has supported young people through the ‘Open Door’ Scheme run by Cornwall County Council . For the last two years Helen has been campaigning for anti-climb barriers to be installed on the Tamar Bridge, and a petition she began in May on change. org has received over 2200 signatures. The trauma of suicide can also be felt by passers-by, users of

the water, and the emergency services who have been caught up in so many of these tragedies. She is also campaigning to reduce waiting lists for patients suffering from mental health issues, and wants to make sure Saltash receives sufficient funding to counter this national problem. Helen is very supportive of the diverse range of community events held in Saltash, calling the forthcoming Christmas Festival one of the main highlights of her Christmas calendar. She is also committed to maintaining and preserving the areas of green space around Saltash, including Coombe Woods, as a legacy for future generations to enjoy. As a woman who has had to balance a family budget, Helen says, “I am very much aware of the financial difficulties facing many local families and will be wanting to ensure that any town council spending will be as cost effective as possible and in the best interests of the community.”

SARAH MARTIN Sarah Martin is the Lib Dem candidate standing for the third time to get onto the Saltash Town Council. She is originally from Devon but has lived in Saltash for quite some years now. She has two young children who are both now in primary school at St Stephens CP School. She has been volunteering in the town since having her first child at a ripe old age! She led the Breastfeeding Peer Support group, providing support for Mums and delivered workshops on feeding for the Children’s Centre. She was also on the Advisory Board as a parent representative at the time. Currently she is media secretary on the Saltash Regatta committee and secretary of the Youngstagers Youth Theatre Group, who are proudly up for two awards this year from Cornwall Drama Association for their production of Peter Pan! Sarah has been attending full council and planning council meetings now since the local elections in May. She brings to the table expertise from years in There are 16 Saltash Town Councillors: four for each ward. Saltash North Ward, Saltash South Ward, Saltash East Ward, Saltash West Ward. The councillors are elected every four years. To stand as a Town Councillor you have to be over 18 and usually have to work or live in Saltash. Councillors are not paid, although they can claim a small

the NHS working a lot on reputation management; the Health Service is well and truly in her blood and she believes we need to make sure those services are protected as much as possible. She is keen that the youth in Saltash continue to get access to the services they need and that places like The Core continue to offer the mental health support they currently do. Sarah said, “Amenities in Saltash are constantly on people’s agenda, as well as the nitty gritty of everyday life – parking, anti-social behaviour, the work of the police and PCSOs, or just making sure paths and pavements are clear. Keeping an eye on costs is going to become ever important moving forward as more and more is devolved from Cornwall Council to Saltash. There is a need to make sure all of that is sustainable. I hope the people of Saltash see competence in me; and the integrity and drive to get the job done – whatever that job throws at me – the challenges, warts and all!” allowance for phone calls and stationery. To be able to vote your name must appear on the electoral register. In 2014 the way for people to register to vote changed to Individual Electoral Registration. HERITAGE NEWS

Charity Revival: Ra Article by Rose Bonner

On Saturday 30th September, the Saltash Heritage took part in the ‘Raising the Standard’ project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and the South West Museums Partnership. The charity, Toc H was founded by Reverend “Tubby” Clayton in WW1 and remarkably still continues to help the community today. The Saltash branch was formed in 1933 and the Burraton branch was formed in 1955, aiming to provide cooperative social service to help others within the community. Fifteen banners and flags were selected in Devon

and Cornwall due to their frail condition, to receive urgent professional conservation to ensure the banners are safe to be displayed. Fortunately, two Toc H banners from the Saltash Heritage collection were selected for conservation and the Museum has been involved in running events to increase the awareness of these banners. The recent event entailed the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Mrs Jean Dent and her consort unveiling the two newly conserved banners assisted by Phil Rundle and Mel Coombe, two Toc H members from the old Saltash and Burraton branches of the movement.

HERITAGE NEWS

19

ising the Standard In fact, Mel Coombe used to visit Saltash Toc H by the Saltash Coop in 1946, before the Burraton Toc H started. Soon after, he joined the Burraton Toc H in 1948, meeting on a Tuesday evening. Young visitors enjoyed designing and making their own banners which were then displayed around the museum which connected the youth and helped to make them aware of the foundations of Toc H. A whole group of young cubs from a Saltash Scout group also joined in the fun. All together 30 young Essayans made their own

banners, which will be put on display in the museum next year. The two Toc H banners will also be put on display in next year’s exhibition along with stories and photographs about the movement. These banners hold many inspiring stories of local people and the work done by the Toc H movement, since its inception in Belgium in 1915. It is undeniable to say that a great deal of laughter and noises pervaded the museum all day as the youngsters paraded their banners.

Use it or lose it. Recently my corner shop closed for good, completely suddenly, and in my mind totally unexpectedly. My Mum used to complain that the price of milk – the most run out of item in our household – was so much higher than what she spent at her local supermarket.

The fantastic community businesses in this section are all based locally, and your support means the world to them. Words by Karen

My Mum is very organised – she never runs out of milk. Our household with its stream of babies and milk glugging, cereal stuffing teenagers does – on a regular basis. And the loss of the corner shop is already costing us dear – which teenager can be bribed to make the 15 minute walk up the hill to the next shop is causing a stream of bickering! However the real cost is that the young family who tried so hard to stay open all hours and serve local customers with little thanks have given up and moved on somewhere else. I didn’t get a chance to say thank you and how much I appreciated all their efforts. So for all of you who know an independent shop owner, whether you pop in regularly or not, please take this as a nudge to remind them how valuable their efforts are. And in my humble opinion (sorry Mum!), definitely worth the extra pennies on two litres of milk!

A QUALITY SERVICE A SENSIBLE PRICE

The Threat posed by long term care fees

It is estimated that there are nearly a million people living in residential care homes in the UK. Whilst the government will pay those costs relating to nursing or medical care, the individual is liable for the costs of residential and personal care, which is means-tested. If a person has to go into care, local authorities can charge residential care fees to that person’s home. A local authority can sell the deceased’s property - if it obtains a court order - in order to meet the charge (or bill). Therefore, to do nothing could be the equivalent of bequeathing all of your home to the local authority rather than to your family. The Property Protection Trust Will has been specially designed to protect part or all of your home against care fees in certain circumstances.

The action is rooted in the peculiarities of a Victorian Cornwall, already experiencing industrial decline, and focuses on the superstitions and fears resulting from the trauma of living in such a difficult time; emotions that Burnett identifies in a strikingly contemporary way. KALAN GWAV

KALAN GWAV Roger Smith, Guardian of the Apple

Thanksgiving for the harvest, before the darker days of winter set in, has always been a time of celebration in rural communities. The ancient Celts celebrated Samhain at this time, which was translated into the Cornish dialect as Kalan Gwav. Kalan Gwav means “first day of winter”, and in Cornwall it grew in to a harvest feast featuring apples. Allen apples were polished until they shone and given as tokens of good luck to family and friends. Upholding these traditions, the Saltash Kalan

Gwav Festival features apples, music, scarecrows and fireworks, and is an opportunity for the whole town to come together to celebrate our heritage, our community, and the start of winter. There will be plenty of stalls and bouncy castles on Warfelton Field, great stomping live music for the whole family, wassailing and fireworks. The band Captain Ewan’s Boneyard will finish off the event in grand style with a ‘Cider Stomp’ concert in Saltash United Football Club.

WAYS TO SUPPORT THE FESTIVAL: This event is being organised by volunteers from Girlguiding Saltash and Saltash United Football Club. Here’s how you can help: Create a Scarecrow Entry is free. Make sure your scarecrow is standing proudly in front of your house between Oct 28 and Nov 1, when the judging takes place. The top five will be moved to Warfelton Green on November 4. Enter the Apple Bake-off Entry is free. Bring your apple cakes, preserves

and pies to the marquee on Warfelton Field between 2pm and 3pm on November 4 for judging. (No need to submit an entry form in advance.) Make a noise at the Wassail, 5pm Bring something to make a loud noise and help the Guardian of the Apple ward off evil spirits Buy a ticket for the Cider Stomp gig with Captain Ewan’s Boneyard, 8pm £3 on the night, or £2 in advance from: bit.ly/ciderstomp

Amber and Max were taking part in their first contest and Matthew was awarded a cornet for being the youngest cornet player (10 Years old) competing in the fourth section. The Saltash Town Band would like to thank everyone who had helped with the six months of fundraising and the true commitment of the players and their families to putting in so many extra hours rehearsing. COMMUNITY NEWS

Ballaré students set up shop at the studio

BALLeT ON TWO SALTASH Students RAISE MONEY FO Following the resounding success of their summer dance show ‘Beauty & The Beast’, Ballaré School of Performing Arts students hatched a clever plan to raise money for a cause close to all their hearts… Echoing the Saltash dance school’s caring and nurturing values, several children manned a stall for hours on end selling show posters to family and friends to raise nearly £300 for Anno’s Africa ‘Ballet in the Slums’ charity. As one student stated: “We are all very lucky to be able to come here to beautiful studios, with mirrors and barres and the same floors that professional dancers use! We have the shoes and clothes we need, as well

as costumes for shows like the one we’ve just had at The House Theatre at Plymouth University. We wanted to do something to help children who aren’t as fortunate as us”. The money raised will go directly to help equip Kenya’s first dedicated young people’s dance space with barres and mirrors. Specialist flooring has already been donated to the charity project by Harlequin – the same safety-conscious sprung surface that can be found in Ballaré’s purposebuilt studios at Moorlands Industrial Estate (above right). It is all a welcome contrast for the young Kenyan dancers, who had previously been practising ballet on rough concrete floors in

U3A voice

NEW YEAR, NEW FACES Another year is underway for Saltash U3A. At the annual general meeting on September 10 new members were welcomed and the Committee were pleased to welcome four new additions to their number. Fresh blood is always welcome, bringing new ideas and views. Whilst some groups have continued to meet throughout the summer others have had a welcome break. Now all are active again and a welcome was extended to a new Guitar group – ‘Strummers’ to be run by Mick Wilson. Initial response saw 15 members interested in joining. So a new band may be launching itself on Saltash! The Striders walking group finally went on their Exmoor trip over four days, which has been in planning by Roger Fursier for a year. Whilst the weather could have been a little kinder, they had a good, albeit tiring, time.

U3A is an organisation of people who regularly gather together to share their experiences, skills, knowledge, philosophies, values and ideas. They learn from each other. The University of the Third Age is a forum for the growth of the human spirit, the

Meanwhile the Roamers plus walking group travelled to Dittisham, crossed the Dart by ferry and had an interesting walk around Greenway. Whilst it was a mixed group, this photo opportunity couldn’t be missed! The Gardening group continued their varied programme with a visit to Trerice. Although relatively local, many members had never visited this enchanting house. An informative talk was given regarding the construction of the Knot garden and a volunteer Steward explained with incredible knowledge, the history of the house. Most of the group were determined to return in March/April to see the brilliant red tulips, in the Knot garden, in full bloom. There is an excellent programme of talks and activities ahead. So, if you haven’t thought of the U3A before – do give it a try.

development of friendships and the exploration of ideas to enrich the quality of life in the Third Age. Saltash U3A was founded in September 2006 as a result of the enthusiasm of local people who had had experience of U3As elsewhere and has steadily grown ever since. Its membership has now reached more than 260 and currently runs over 30 activity groups ranging from Art to Ancestry, Music to Walking, and Theatre

to T’ai Chi. Saltash is a member of the Tamar Valley Network.

CHARITY NEWS

SALTASH SHIRTS REACH AS FAR AWAY AS KENYA! Wear A Sports Shirt Day is a not for profit venture run by Julian Chenery who grew up in Saltash and still maintains strong links with the town. Julian attended Longstone Infant School, Saltash Junior School & Saltash Comprehensive School and was one of the founders of Saltash football team St Stephens Borough who play in the East Cornwall Premier League. Since the start of the 2013 football season he has run the Wear a Sports Shirt Day project collecting old football kits and other sports kits for kids in Africa. Kit is donated via several UK based charities - Kit Aid, Kits4Causes, The Thembalethu Foundation (Zimbabwe) for football, and SOS Kit for rugby. Julian also sources kit himself to send directly to various sports groups. These include the African Bible University in Uganda and the Wire Soccer Academy in Kenya which explains why these youngsters in our photo are proudly wearing saltash.net polo shirts. Julian has now expanded his collecting activities to

include school uniforms which primarily go to the Folkestone based Operation Sunshine, as well as other charities such as Bags of Hope in Kenya, The Brikama Schools Project (Gambia), The Seeway Trust and The UBUNTU Project (Uganda). Julian uses various social media platforms to appeal for any old uniforms once the football season, and school year finish and then arranges to collect it from the kind people who donate. This year, with both saltash.net and Callington Community College changing uniforms there was an amazing response from parents at both schools. As Julian no longer lives in Saltash he was extremely grateful to both Danielle Frith of Truly Scrumptious in Saltash and Adam Speare of Adam’s Barber Shop in Callington who both offered their businesses as collection points. Julian will also be collecting at the Saltash Legends Charity Match on Christmas Eve in aid of Kits4Causes. If you are a sponsor, a match official or someone who would like to help at this Saltash Legends annual and renowned event in the football calendar please get in touch with Sam Borthwick, Adam Stiff, Will Swales, Stuart Fort or Julian Chenery on Facebook.

CHARITY NEWS Charlotte with mum Michelle

SUPPORT MEANS SO MUCH TO SALTASH MUM AND DAUGHTER

CHARITY NEWS Saltash Rugby Club hosted a spectacular fundraising event on September 22, organised by mother and daughter Michelle Morritt and Charlotte Barriball. An evening of glamour and dancing made the most of the Rugby Club’s excellent facilities, and 15 stalls helped attendees get out their wallets to support a worthy cause. The stalls sold everything from fashion, crafts, homemade gifts, books, pamper products, cakes and sweets, and many locals and friends and family of Charlotte came out to join in the fun. Three charities dear to Charlotte’s heart were supported with a total of £1002.39 raised for Maddi’s Butterflies, the Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund and Torbay Holiday Helpers Network. All the monies raised will go towards improving the quality of respite care for children and young adults on their cancer journeys. Charlotte singled out these three as they had provided care for her and helped her deal with the many issues facing a young person who has been diagnosed with cancer. The timing of the fundraising event was particularly poignant as Charlotte took her final chemotherapy tablet the following day, marking the end of her two-and-a-half-year treatment journey. Charlotte showed great resilience throughout her treatment raising a total to date of £9610.14. She has handed over a cheque for £2428.50 to Dr Wimalendra, her own Oncology Consultant, which will be used to provide equipment for an

51

Oncology room to help children and young adults cope with regular stays in hospital. Charlotte herself has had many of these stays and knows how important it is to have the right resources around you at these times. Charlotte has also raised money for Little Princess who provide wigs, and Tanya’s Courage Trust and DCCS who offer teen and child support. Charlotte will continue to raise awareness and funds for Children and Young Adult Cancer Support as she now recovers and builds her strength back up to normal. The final word on this remarkable young person and the journey she and her family have gone through goes to mum, Michelle, who says, “I would like to thank all the medical teams at Bristol and Derriford. Their knowledge and expertise in oncology is second to none and the care they gave Charlotte will remain with me for life. And I’m indebted to all our family and friends and those amazing charities who supported us over the last two and a half years. Charlotte is such a strong young lady and now deserves all the happiness and luck on her new journey. We couldn’t have got through without you.” Michelle has suggested that If you would like to support Charlotte and any of the cancer charities who supported her, please contact Michelle directly on michellemorritt@yahoo.com and she can put you in touch.

WE SHALL REM

Saltash once again pays tribute to the many men and women who have lost their lives in conflict with a two-minute silence on November 11 and the Annual Remembrance Service and Parade on Sunday November 12. Young reporter Rose Bonner shares her own personal take on her home town’s reverence to those countless heroes that were lost. “Saltash is one of the unique towns in the country that has its own memorial Peace Garden, ideally situated outside the Saltash Guildhall and the ancient St Nicholas and St Faith Church. The Memorial Peace Garden at Alexandra Square

Green was officially opened on Sunday 22 November by Barry Brooking. It was commissioned by former Mayor Sue Hooper and remains in the ownership of the Saltash Town Council. The Peace Garden, with its abundance of floral tributes within the flower beds, mainly in the Saltash town colours of red, yellow, white and blue has proved to be a great asset for the community and visitors alike. The memorial seating area welcomes hundreds of people to sit and reflect on not only their daily lives, but in remembering their loved ones. In the garden, the granite memorial plaque

MEMBER THEM depicts remembrance words with sincerity: “remembering all those who have lost their lives in war and conflict” I, like all my peers, of course do not remember the years of conflict in both world wars, however, we all hear stories of our beloved ancestors who lost their lives or were willing to lose their lives fighting for their country and for ultimate peace. My great, great Uncles, Percy England and Ernest Tout were killed in World War Two whilst serving in His Majesty’s Royal Navy, on HMS Jaguar. The Jaguar was sunk off Sidi Barrani in the Mediterranean on 26 March 1942 and was destroyed by a German U-boat. Their names are now engraved on the war memorial on Plymouth Hoe. 75 years on there are still Tout and England families living in Saltash who remember their bravery along with so many others during such

tragic conflict in warfare.” This year the Saltash & District Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance will be held on October 28 at 7pm at Saltash Wesley Church. The Mayor and her Consort will also attend the Federation of Plymouth and District Ex Services Associations Remembrance Festival at Plymouth Pavilions on November 10 at 7.30pm. The two-minute silence will be held outside Brunel Inn on Fore Street on November 11 at 11am. On Sunday 12 November there will be the Annual Remembrance Service and Parade starting at 2pm at Saltash Wesley Church, followed by wreath laying at St Nicholas and St Faith War Memorial.

MUSIC SCENE

FLOOD

Grunge-groove riff-meisters Flood have been treating local live music fans’ ears to a steady flow of quality original blues-rock material since they formed in 2013. Here, guitarist and vocalist Ian Lightley offers an insight into being a part-time but uncompromisingly passionate musician…

never really left me (although in my forties I no longer have photocopies of his face as wallpaper on my bedroom wall). As well as being transfixed by the sounds he made, I became equally fascinated by how they were recorded - and so it was that my mum allowed me to cover every inch of wall space in the spare room with egg boxes.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

WRITING AND PLAYING

I fell in love with music (and electric guitar in particular) when I first heard Jimi Hendrix through my dad’s car stereo when I was 16. This sparked off an obsession that has

I’ve never been all that interested in playing other people’s music, or at least in trying to replicate songs precisely, which is why I write –

MUSIC SCENE and write – and write… Being an ‘originals band’ brings its own challenges, particularly playing in the local area, as the majority of pubs and (pub-goers) – not unreasonably – like to pitch up and listen to songs they know and love. Where the Union Inn is concerned, we’ve overcome that problem by playing there continuously for 4 years, brow-beating the locals into submission… occasionally someone even sings along.

RECORDING The beauty of making music in 2017 is that you don’t need to be ‘signed’ to publish music - the technology to record, distribute and promote is all at our fingertips. The idea that most musicians carry around of someday ‘making it’ is slowly disappearing; I’m not sure I even know what this ever meant anyway! For us, it’s the joy of coming together and making something

new that nobody has ever heard before. Being an only child may explain my longstanding drive to play lots of instruments no Jackson five option for me! Our drummer Mark has that same compulsion – we’ve learned a lot from each other and we keep on pushing up the quality each time we record.

FITTING IT ALL IN Bass-player Tom and I both have two children each (though his are closer to the hands-on end of the age spectrum than my two), and we all have jobs with long hours, yet despite the perpetual feeling of tiredness, the lack of time or space, we have kept things moving. We get a lot of encouragement and support from our families and fans (cough) but the real reason we find the time, is because it’s what we all do. It’s who we are. Flood’s eponymous first album (2015) is available online, as well as a string of live tracks and demos on Soundcloud, and their Focus on the Dirty single, which was released earlier this year. A follow-up single is due out soon and work has started on their new album. Find out more, including upcoming gigs, at www.floodband.uk and on Facebook and Twitter (@floodbanduk)
