IN BRIEF

SALTASH ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION (S.E.A) JOIN BOTTLE REFILL INITIATIVE

Saltash Environmental Action (S.E.A.) is launching an exciting new project this month! Saltash will be joining the Refill Cornwall initiative. Cafes, restaurants and businesses have agreed to refill, for free, reusable water bottles, so hopefully reducing the huge numbers of single use water bottles purchased, many of which end up in the sea or in our countryside. Look for the blue Refill Cornwall stickers in the windows of local cafes and businesses. The location of refill stations will also be loaded onto the Refill app so that the nearest station is easy to find. The launch will be on Saturday October 7 with a big event in Fore Street starting at 11am. Keep your eye on our Facebook page for details. SEA also hope to launch a reusable bottle with their logo on it, soon. A million single use bottles are bought worldwide daily! S.E.A is inviting you to do your bit to reduce this horrendous statistic.

PLANS FOR ALDI & MCDONALDS IN SALTASH

Media reports have revealed that there are plans for the construction of an Aldi store and McDonalds Drive Through restaurant on the Saltash Industrial Estate. Developers Quora are reported to have submitted a pre-planning application to Cornwall Council for a 1,725 square metre Aldi food store, two other retail units and the McDonalds fast food outlet on the former Sanford Suzuki site. The plans also include provision for 175 parking spaces. The site had previously received planning permission for a Tesco store, but the retailer announced last year that it was no longer proceeding with the development.

CORNWALL COLLEGE TAKES SALTASH STUDENTS TO SEAFOOD FESTIVAL A group of professional cookery students from Cornwall College in Saltash supported celebrity local chef, Jacque Marchell, at this year’s Plymouth Seafood Festival.

The festival, which took place on September 16 and 17 was back for its sixth year and brought the Barbican and Sutton Harbour alive with entertainment, activities and dishes to celebrate the city’s fantastic caught seafood. Professional cookery students, from Cornwall College Saltash, assisted a host of chefs as they helped with preparing, cleaning, cooking and demoing their culinary skills on the main stage. Level 3 professional cookery student, Amelia Burr, said it was only the first week back at college ‘and we are already working in industry with chefs helping me inspire to be the best.’ Chris Penk, team lead for professional cookery at the college said: “It was great to work with experts within the fish and shellfish industry. “Attending events like these really help to enhance the learning experience for our students. It supports our position as ambassadors for work experience with Plymouth City Council and enhances our reputation as one of the only gold accredited centres for fish and shellfish from Peoples First.”

TOWN MESSENGER

What a load of rubbish!? August bank holiday weekend saw Deputy Mayor Yates, Councillor Thorn, the vice chair of Cornwall Council, a womble of volunteers and myself take part in a community litter clean-up of the area around the Celtic Cross and Elwell Woods. And wow was I impressed with the lack of litter! Struggling to fill our bags, and sat in the morning sun all of us commented on how little debris around the area there was, it transpired that there is in fact a real pride amongst the residents of Lockyer Terrace who are often found picking up litter to keeping the area clean, most probably en route to the bountiful apple trees in the woods - they are delicious, and fine reward! However with most things in life there has to be balance and I was shocked to find out that out of 351 authorities managing waste services around the country we lie 284th! Now, this

does cover the whole of Cornwall, and I would like to think we are a little above that as a town, but this is a recycling rate of just 36%. Don’t you think it’s something we can all improve on? And if we want to set ourselves a goal, the leading recycler (2014/2015) was South Oxfordshire with 66.6%. You may have seen a leaflet recently posted through doors with information about increased plastic recycling, the main take home point from that was all plastics, apart from black can now be recycled, which makes life a little easier! To put it all into a monetary perspective it is £75 per tonne cheaper to process recyclable rubbish that is sorted than household rubbish, so if we increase the rate of recycling, there should be more money to spend on more important things than just rubbish! Cllr Casey Warrington

Every financial year the town council has a budget for community grants. The sort of projects we would like to support would be sports clubs, youth organisations, neighbourhood initiatives, but other groups can apply. Grants are usually up to £1000. But a higher amount

might be considered in exceptional circumstances. Application forms are available from the Guildhall reception or can be downloaded from the town council website. Completed applications will be reviewed by the Policy and Resources Committee for a decision. Cllr Bill Phillips, Chair P&R.

News from Saltash Town Council Konsel an dre Essa

Message from the Mayor of Saltash, Councillor Jean Dent

In The Town Council we know the staff who work in the Guildhall and out in the town are wonderful! However just recently we have heard from members of the public saying how much they also appreciate them. Letters and emails have come in saying ‘thank you’ for the work that they do and how they often go the extra mile to engage with them and to offer support. I found this so encouraging, people are often quick to criticize, but much slower to give praise. So thank you to all those who took the time and trouble to get in touch.

When it comes to saying thank you, I must offer my thanks to Cllr Yates for standing in for me several times lately, and also my apologies for being titled as my consort by The Cornish Times. Another thank you must go to PCSO Kirsty who is leaving us as one of our support officers. She will be much missed for her smiling face, her support and her tweeting abilities. How are we going to find someone else to become a national celebrity for their social media profile? Cllr Jean Dent, Mayor of Saltash

Saltash South Ward: The by election, if contested, will be re-run on Thursday 26 October 2017. Details on noticeboards and the Town Council Website.

TOWN TAKEOVER IS BACK Growth Hub On The Road returns refreshed and ready for a new programme of Town Takeovers this autumn, starting in Liskeard on Tuesday 26 September. The day begins with a free business networking breakfast at Liskerrett Community Centre. Businesses from across South East Cornwall can find out more about the Growth Hub’s guidance service and book a free business review with tasty pastries and hot drinks in supply. Each Town Takeover day includes a series of fantastic 45 minute taster sessions offering fresh insight into ‘live’ business topics, presented by experienced business coaches. The Liskeard sessions will be held at Millennium House and cover: maximising retail sales; setting prices that work for your customers and bottom line; getting the most from a five star food hygiene rating and how generating social value for your community can also be good for business.

The Town Takeover will include an evening session to cater for businesses unable to attend during the working day. Refreshments will be available from 5.30pm to set you up for a session on social media from 6-7pm at Millennium House. Businesses find the taster sessions valuable with tools and techniques that they can apply: “a fun and interesting workshop that gave great ideas and strategy tips” (Parlez-Vous); “in-depth, easy to understand and interactive” (Bickerstaff & Co) and “after 35 years, you can teach an old dog new tricks!” (Sands Group) The networking breakfast takes place at The Hub Café, Liskerrett Community Centre from 8-9am and daytime and evening taster sessions take place at the Millennium House, Pensilva from 10am-7pm. Places at the business networking breakfast and taster sessions can be booked in advance on the Growth Hub website www.ciosgrowthhub.com/takeover.

CORNWALL COUNCIL NEWS

MEET your cornwall

Councillor: SHEILA LENNOX-BOYD Four Cornwall Councillors were elected in May to represent the interests of Saltash at countywide level. They were Derek Holley (Saltash East), Sheila Lennox-Boyd (Saltash North), Hilary Franks (Saltash South) and Sam Tamlin (Saltash West). This month we feature Sheila Lennox-Boyd, who was elected to Cornwall Council for the first time in 2017. Shelia LennoxBoyd needs little introduction to people in Saltash, having worked in the licensed trade in the town for nearly 40 years. Born and raised in Plymouth she moved to Saltash in 1979 and over the next four decades ran a number of public houses in the town, including The Railway, The Wheatsheaf, Brunel and Ploughboy. She served on Saltash Town Council between

2007 and 2009 as an independent, but stood down because of business pressures. In 2011 she and her business partner Ben took over The Windy Ridge at Trerulefoot, which is where she now lives. Sheila was encouraged to stand for Cornwall Council as a Conservative by local MP Sheryll Murray and Shelia said it was the best thing she had ever done. “It’s been a steep learning curve, but I am really enjoying representing the interests of the town I love so much,” said Sheila. “I have had a wonderful life in Saltash and it’s great to be back involved in the town through my work on the council.” Sheila is kept busy on various council committees and attending members’ briefings to be updated on a wide range of issues facing Cornwall as a

whole and Saltash in particular. She is also about to become a member of the Mount Edgcumbe committee. Sheila said: “I do feel all my years in business in the licensed trade has given me the experience needed to make a positive contribution to debates and discussion. As a publican I have enjoyed the good times and the hard times - and that’s exactly what local authorities face now. “The current austerity measures mean that a lot more powers and responsibilities are being delegated to local councils, such as Saltash Town Council. I aim to ensure that the views and needs of Saltash are represented at Truro when these decisions are being made.” As president of both Saltash Football Club and Saltash Rugby Club Sheila remains closely involved with the town’s community. “I am so grateful to have had the support of people when I stood for Cornwall Council and I owe a great deal to the people of Saltash. It’s a wonderful town and we

17

are really blessed as a community.” Sheila hopes to further strengthen her links with the town by standing for the vacant Town Council seat in Saltash South. “There are currently no Cornwall councillors on Saltash Town Council, so I hope to remedy that by putting my nomination forward for the vacant seat.” She said that nominations close on September 29 and if the seat is contested there will be a by-election on October 26. • There is a Cornwall Council surgery every Saturday morning at Saltash Library between 10am and 12 noon when one of the four councillors will be present to discuss any concerns or talk over suggestions. Shopping locally has long been championed by the great and the good of the retail world. Mary Portas, TV presenter of “Mary Portas, Secret Shopper”, and “What Britain Buys”; and Global Retail Ambassador for Save the Children, was commissioned by the UK government to see what could be done for struggling high streets up and down the country.

The fantastic community businesses in this section are all based locally, and your support means the world to them.

The Portas Review described a vision for bringing economic and community life back, re-imagining town centres as social hubs for shopping, learning, socialising and fun. It made 28 recommendations about how to deliver that vision intended to: • Get town centres running like businesses. • Get the basics right to allow businesses to flourish. • Level the playing field. • Define landlords’ roles and responsibilities. • Give communities a greater say. Portas said, “I don’t want to live in a Britain that doesn’t care about community. And I believe that our high streets are a really important part of pulling people together in a way that a supermarket or shopping mall, however convenient, however entertaining and however slick, just never can. Our high streets can be lively, dynamic, exciting and social places that give a sense of belonging and trust to a community….. I fundamentally believe that once we invest in and create social capital in the heart of our communities, the economic capital will follow.”

MEET ROB, THE MAN BEHIND THE EMPORIUM Rob’s Emporium is a truly special Rob Young place, tucked into Keast Mews and run by a true professional and gentleman. Rob Young is not a native of Saltash, but has been welcomed into the local community with open arms because of his easy going nature. He is not how you would expect a second hand dealer to be – there is no pressurizing patter or del boy references when you pop into his shop to browse. Rob prefers to let the objects he sells speak for themselves - all carefully considered by him before they even reach the shop. Rob is interested in everything from pottery

to glassware, beautiful hardwood furniture, jewellery and unique ornaments that draw the eye. Older objects are often made with real attention to detail and the kind of care that artisans give their work, that is impossible to replicate by modern mass production; and Rob has a great eye for authenticity, quality and detail. If you are looking for gifts to make this year’s Christmas so much more meaningful, then browsing in Rob’s charming shop with no pressure, means you can give your loved ones a really considered gift this year, bringing something back to life with love and care.

COMMUNITY NEWS

SALTASH TACKLE & BAit: HOOKED BACK INTO BUSINESS

Whilst we often struggle with negativity in situations, good news stories do frequently pop up when you least expect them! When we last visited Martin Harrison from Saltash Tackle & Bait a few months ago, he was finalising his plans for closing up shop, as fewer and fewer people were using his services. However since we let the Saltash community know about this in our August issue, things have turned around for Martin quite considerably! “So many local people have come in,” he enthuses, “either to express their dismay that I was closing, or to explain that they never knew there was a fishing shop in the area!” Since the local community have come out in droves to express their support, Martin has decided that he is able to stay open after all, and is hugely grateful to everyone in Saltash for their support. “Fishing is a great sport, and we in Saltash are really lucky to have Whiting, Bass, Flounder in abundance, and even Cod coming up the estuary in the winter! “We have seen lots of people wanting to get into

Martin Harrison

fishing. We can offer starter rods for beach casting including a reel for under £50, or a spin combo for just £24.99 – both excellent quality at a very reasonable price and great for Christmas presents. “We are also the only tackle and bait shop this side of the bridge for miles around, so if you need to pick up your bait on the way to a fishing trip, we could be very convenient for you.” Martin’s biggest bug bear is still the lack of parking outside his shop, and would like to move into Fore Street, but at least a move is better than a closure!

Saltash Tackle & Bait At Saltash Tackle & Bait, we aim to provide you with all your fishing requirements, whether you’re a proven angler or thinking of taking up the sport.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents enabling your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs and make decisions, if you are not able to do so. Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident or lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a Lasting Power of Attorney would be invaluable. You are not legally obligated to have a LPA in place, similarly there is no obligation to have a will or a life insurance policy, but if you don’t, things could be very difficult and expensive for your family and loved ones.

STUDENT NEWS

sALTASH.NET GCSE ST This year has seen an enormous overhaul of the GCSE system. English and Maths GCSEs are now much more demanding and are graded from 9-1 instead of A*-G, so students are now awarded one of nine grades instead of eight for these subjects. At the top end, a grade 7 is roughly the equivalent to an A grade, with an 8 being like an A* and a 9 even better than that (a ‘superstar’ maybe?!); awarded for “exceptional performance.” In the light of these changes, saltash.net is incredibly proud that a fantastic fourteen grade 9s were awarded to our students in English or Maths with Harriet Hunt and Charlie Potts both achieving

two. What an accolade! In addition, we are delighted that a large number of subjects have seen an increase in A*-C grades this year. In Art, an amazing 85% of students achieved A*-C grades whilst in History nearly a quarter of students achieved A*-A grades. PE also tripled the number of A* grades awarded. Other top performing students, achieving the equivalent of 11 A*-A grades were Jack Pritchard and Megan Seymour. Close on their heels with 10 A*-A grades were Daisy Ashford, Amy Donovan, Kaley Gibbs, Amelia Horne and George Seymour. With nine top grades were Emily Congo, Ethan Cox,

TARS & SUPERSTARS! Harriet Hunt, Lucie Jones and Danny Snook. Although these are the stand-out stories, we are equally pleased with all the students who have achieved or beaten their target grades and all those who have faced particularly challenging personal circumstances. A special mention must go to Megan Slocombe from our Area Resource Base, The Zone, who achieved two GCSEs: what a fantastic result. Speaking on results’ day, Headteacher, Miss Littledyke summed up the school’s successes: “The students and staff have shown incredible resilience and determination in the face of the GCSE reforms

and increased expectations this year. It is wonderful to see all that hard work has paid off, not only in an excellent set of GCSE results, but also in such a lovely group of well-rounded young people. They have made us all very proud.” Head of Year, Mr Feldwick said, “What a cracking group of young people! Fun and positive, able and gutsy. I am really proud to have been their Head of Year and am delighted that, against the odds, they have done so well. They never gave up! No matter what changes occurred they kept trying. I am sure that they will go on to greater things and I can’t wait to watch their next steps on the journey.”

YOUTH VOICE

Molly and Ollie from the Core

SALTASH TOWN YOUTH COUNCIL - 25 YEARS ON...

On September 9 1992, the Saltash Town Youth Council was formed as a community youth organisation in the town. To the day, 25 years on, members of the community joined together to celebrate this marvellous festivity at the Saltash Guildhall, whereupon those who have identified, past and present, with the council reminisced upon the many successes that the youth council has achieved. Memorably, the Saltash Town Youth Council has been presented a commendation award by the Queen for it’s contribution to the nation as it was the only youth council in 1992 in the UK. The youth council was established by the mayor of the time, Sue Hooper who called upon all the uniformed youth organisations, teachers and school pupils in Saltash to provide a supportive network to care for the needs of young people. There have been various different chairmen of

the youth council and now there are two joint chairs Ffion Stanton and Camille Smith, who are an inspiration with ideas and vision that are working to evolve the youth council into the By Rose Bonner, 21st century. Reflecting on 25 years Secretary of Saltash ago, Sue Hooper Town Youth Council stated that “the aims and graduate of saltash.net and objectives of the community school. Saltash Youth Town Council was to provide a forum for all the youth of Saltash to communicate, support and coordinate, when applicable, youth activities and sharing resources.”

YOUTH VOICE

Other founding members present were Peter Stephens, Len Maddock, Ursula Davey, Joy Nodder and Dot Spurling who recalled the initial meeting with affection and stated that they were “surprised by how many people attended. The leaders emphasised that the council benefitted them too as they were able to share resources and have fun at the same time. Over the years, a multitude of young people have demonstrated how such funding has helped them with their endeavours and skills. Some of those young people have gone on to realising their dream in society. The Saltash Town Youth Council is persisting to connect with the youth which was very clear

at the celebratory event. Infact, Ollie and Molly, members of The Core for 3 years, have been empowered through being given designated roles. For example, Ollie is the chair of the youth committee and makes sure that all is running smoothly at events. The two also emphasised how their confidence has grew since being a part of The Core. Hamish and Ben from Junkyard Skatepark noted that since attending the sessions, they were more confident, they made new friends and they made more skills. It is no denying that the youth council has strived to make youth Mayor Dent pictured with Len Maddock, Sue organisations thrive, thus Hooper, Ffion Stanton ensuring a better future and Camille Smith for the community.

aRT @ ASHTORRE: GEOMETRICS PLUS

Stephen Beer lives in Saltash Morning Glory and studied graphic design and photography at Falmouth School of Art in the 1990s. Photographs will feature in his exhibition of new work at Ashtorre Rock; colourful close-up compositions of plants invite the viewer to focus the eye on the small details we can easily overlook. The main work, however, will be large acrylic paintings from his GEOMETRICS series, which he began in 2014 in response to the colour field work of Joseph Albers and the Op Art compositions of Victor Vasarely, both part of the abstract art movements of the 1960s to 1980s. These vibrant images create energy and movement through the overlapping of shapes and lines in carefully related colours and tones. Also in the show Geometric 012 will be small text pieces with the messages spelled out in ASCII binary code. This exhibition reflects Stephen’s broad interests; it offers something to appeal to many tastes and perhaps to challenge our

preconceptions about what art is and just how it works on our senses. The exhibition is open daily [10am-4pm] from 20 October to 30 November at Ashtorre Rock, where refreshments are on sale. Right under the Brunel Bridge at the Waterside, it’s just a short walk from the railway station and there is free parking nearby.

LOCAL ARTIST:

MARK FIELDING

Saltash artist Mark Fielding is one of less than 80 artists accepted to exhibit their work in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2017. His painting ‘A Lady of Seville’ was inspired by a trip to Spain. Mark sees the painting as a cross between Beryl Cook and Robert Lenkiewicz, who taught

him from 1998. The painting will be exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London from September 18 before going on national tour. Earlier this year Mark exhibited one of his portraits at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition, also at the Mall Galleries. Mark’s paintings are also being exhibited in Plymouth in September. A new exhibition of paintings of Venice, Devon and Cornwall is taking place at the Caffe Gallerie, 61, Cornwall Street, Plymouth until the end of September. Mark will also be exhibiting a larger version of ‘A Lady of Seville’ at his studio gallery at Royal William Yard. For further information visit his website www.markfielding.co.uk

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

BUSY WINTER PROGRAMME AT CALSTOCK ARTS

Since opening seven years ago, Calstock Arts has become a major fixture on the events scene of the South West. Artists of national status – sometimes international status – appear regularly. On September 30 Andy Kershaw gives a fascinating and often hilarious talk on his career in music, broadcasting and as a foreign correspondent in some of the world’s most dangerous hot-spots. He has interviewed Bob Dylan, worked with The Stones and allegedly been propositioned by Little Richard. Jazz is well-catered for with Liane Carroll appearing on October 6. She effortlessly moves from intimate venues to vast stages which have included the Albert Hall in the BBC Proms. Last year she was voted Best British Jazz Vocalist and was awarded the Gold Badge Award for Services to Music. Malija appear on October 19. Mark Lockheart, Jasper Hoiby & Liam Noble are amongst the very best in British jazz with impressive CVs. Their on-stage chemistry is infectious. Formed in 2014, they have just released their second album to great reviews. The legendary guitarist Martin Taylor appears on November 7 with Alison Burns in an Ella Fitzgerald tribute. The list of the internationally renowned names he has played with is enormous. If you know him you will certainly not wish to miss him and if you’ve

somehow missed him buy tickets and be amazed. November 16 has the Dave O’Higgins Quartet. Dave has been prolific in his 30 year career. He has played with some of the best including Martin Taylor as well as regular in Frank Sinatra’s band (yes… that Frank Sinatra). A welcome return of this quartet. Folk also features strongly with Boo Hewerdine and Brooks Williams appearing on October 13. Both of them have impressive pedigrees and a vast back-catalogue of work with the likes of KD Lang, Eddi Reader, Paul Jones, Taj Mahal etc! The incomparable Richard Andy Kershaw Digance who is celebrating 50 years of performing with 31 albums, a BAFTA nomination and a host of awards along the way. He will be appearing on October 27. November 18 sees Jim Moray appearing. His contribution to ground-breaking forms in folk music is notable and has moved from grime to Johnny Marr-esque guitar pop but always with the folk tradition at its core. Finally Gigspanner make a return on November 25. They are always a huge success and have a big following. Peter Knight’s career Richard has included Steeleye Span. Their Digence music embraces a whole range of styles and is difficult to categorise but may best be described simply as ‘brilliant’. For details if events visit calstockarts.org

WHo’S GOT TALENT?! Essa Drama are a non-profit making charity from Saltash. They have been putting on a successful talent competition for several years now and are hoping that their next annual show – the eighth one – will continue giving audiences the chance to see and support amazing local talent. All monies raised are going to worthy local charity Hugs from Henry. Hugs from Henry is a Plymouth based charity which helps families all over the UK who have a child suffering from neuroblastoma. Open auditions were held at the Future Inn, Derriford, Plymouth in September, and the successful participants are going on to perform in front of a live audience at the Devonport Playhouse on Saturday November 4. The live audience event will be judged by three of the finest to rival Simon Cowell et al, and the overall winner will receive £500, donated by local businessman Alan Harper of Alan Harper Composites. This year’s judges will be: Marcus Alleyne, who is a director, conductor, educator and academic. This will be Marcus’s

second time of being on the auditioning panel. He is very well known in the area as the conductor of many fine musical and choral performances. Nicola Rosewarne will be faced with the difficult task once again of being head judge. She is the programme leader for Higher Education Performing Arts at City College Plymouth, teaching across a very broad range of subjects and levels. She has also been a core member of Kneehigh Theatre touring nationally and internationally, and had responsibility for performance direction with Wildworks, including the acclaimed Enchanted palace project at Kensington Palace. Johnny Rutherford, Plymouth BBC Spotlight News Reporter, makes up the panel. He has a wealth of knowledge around theatre and performing arts, and Essa Drama are most honoured and very excited to be welcoming Johnny help find a winner. Kaye Bonner and Liz Fedrick from Essa Drama will be the hosts for the show again this year. JUNKYARD SKATEPARK

LOLA COMMENDED FOR HER HAIR-OISM An inspiring local young lady hasn’t failed to touch the hearts of many in the community of Saltash recently. Lola, an aspiring and talented skateboarder who is nine years old recently shaved her hair off for Skateistan and the children’s cancer ward at Derriford Hospital. For many young people, their hair is their crown and glory which subsequently leads many to acknowledge the courage of Lola and her selfless decision to shave her hair off. Lola proclaimed “I was excited, I wasn’t nervous”. Whilst Lola’s friends told her they were initially “scared”, they now realise the bravery of Lola and tell

Lola it really suits her. The two charities that the local skateboarder selected are particularly close to Lola’s heart. Recently, Lola’s grandmother was a victim of cancer which inspired her to shave her hair off, in fact she said her “grandma looked cool”’ so she wanted to be like her and comfort other victims in their process of treatment by raising money to make them feel like they are at home whilst at Derriford Hospital. Lola was desperate to meet the children but unfortunately, the patients were too poorly to see her. Instead, Derriford are going to send information to Lola to inform her on what they will spend the money raised on.

LOLA

Skateistan is another inspiring charity that Lola selected to raise money for. She has great respect for the charity due to her passion for skateboarding. The organisation is based in Afghanistan, South Africa and Cambodia which aims to provide a place that the local youth can play and be educated, ‘free from discrimination and violence’. Skateistan empowers children through coaching the youth how to skate. Skateistan responded to Lola’s remarkable act and emphasised how amazing it was for Lola to shave her hair off for charity. Lola would love to be involved in this extraordinary

47

charity when she is older. Both Lola and her family would like to say a massive thank you to all who supported Lola, to include her friends, family, Brunel academy, Just Giving, the local community, Danya from Bombshell Saltash for taking time out of her day to shave off Lola’s hair and Lola’s brother who says it really suits her now. Overall, Lola managed to raise an amazing £2,786. It is no doubt that Lola is a compassionate young lady that will strive to make the world a better place. Lola stated “it doesn’t matter what you look like; bold is beautiful”.

Daffodil Conference celebrating Tamar Valley’s historic daffodils Cast your mind back to early spring this year… were you deciding between a ‘trumpet’ or a ‘large cup’ and excitedly recording each different daffodil type you stumbled across in Tamar Valley hedges? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that the results are in, and all will be revealed at the Heralds of Spring Daffodil Conference on 5th October. The Conference will celebrate the Heritage Lottery funded daffodil project focusing on observation and identification of Tamar Valley daffodils in the local landscape. The event will be an opportunity to share the findings of the project, hear from daffodil experts, listen to oral histories and buy bulbs for the coming season. Sara Rock from Tamar Grow Local, who are the project delivery partners with Tamar Valley AONB, says, “We are delighted to bring together John Lanyon from the National Trust, Ron Scamp from RA Quality Daffodils and RHS judge and bulb committee member Gwynne Davies to the

conference to talk about their interests and work with daffodils”. Calstock Parish Archive will also have a display of photographs of the Tamar Valley daffodil industry, and photographs from the 2017 survey will be on show. The premier of the Heralds of Spring and Bere Ferrers Spring Flower Show film will be shown, too. Corinna Woodall, Tamar Valley AONB Manager said, “Heralds of Spring really captured the imaginations of so many people in the Valley. As we emerged from the winter months, this project brought joy and lifted spirits. The information collected will help inform future work as to how we can best protect the Tamar Valley’s historic daffodils for future generations”. The Conference will be held on Thursday 5th October, 10:00am - 4:30pm at the Tamar Valley Centre, Drakewalls. For full details and to book your FREE tickets, please visit the Eventbrite website and search for ‘Heralds of Spring Daffodil Conference’.

BUSINESS FOCUS

A home from home where you can just be…

There has been a hostelry on the Waterfront in Saltash since medieval times. Just Be is continuing in this tradition with a modern twist that accommodates those subtle needs of our busy 21st Century lifestyles perfectly. Tina Parker and Peter Castell took the decision to turn their lifetime hobbies into a full-time business just over two years ago, opening Just Be as their very first venture working for themselves. Peter has a love of wines, and a huge knowledge and passion to share this with us, without the snooty barriers commonly associated with wine tasting. Indeed, you can pop down on a Friday at 5pm for free wine tasting to whet your appetite. It can cost less than a taxi to and from Plymouth to enjoy a whole bottle of specially selected, really good wine. Peter and Tina have a passion for all food and drink, and ensure that their supply chain is top quality, as well as ethically traded. You can be sure of great coffee, and a continually changing menu of both light bites and more substantial dishes every time you visit. Everything has been tasted and scrutinised by Peter and Tina themselves, ensuring all the choices offered to their customers are good ones. Their frequent visits to food and drink fairs and ability to order small quantities means there is

always something of interest on offer, that you may not have tried before. The overall experience of Just Be is designed to be as relaxing as chilling out in your own home, except that someone else is taking care of the washing up. Families regularly pop in to play chess or scrabble in a comfortable corner, friends do business or catch up over lunch, or individuals can be guaranteed some peace and quiet and the ability to order just what they fancy at any time – champagne for breakfast, coffee late in the evening and everything in between. They have even hosted several very special, intimate wedding receptions, providing a three course sit down dinner for around 25 guests. and then seamlessly rearranging the space to provide a buffet for 40 guests in the evening. Tina has the final word on why they both chose to give up well paid jobs to embark on this hospitality adventure, with all the long hours and hard work it brings. “Every so often,“ she reflects, “I stand back and see the place full with everyone having a good time – and then instead of thinking about all the hard work, the whole thing seems effortless. It feels like hosting a party that is in full swing and lets us revel in the enjoyment that it is bringing other people. It’s a goose bump moment that makes it all worthwhile.”

They had successfully identified a line of medieval silver smelting sites on the Bere Alston peninsula and quite reasonably expected to pick up the sequence on the Cornish bank where the Tamar took its great swerve at Calstock. The story of their evacuation, finds and interoperation is a fascinating one, and will be retold by their project leader Dr Chris Smart. Advance bookings not essential.
