Political Leaders from both the Labour and Conservative parties joined Plymouth City Council’s Chief Executive to remind people it’s time to register to vote. Over 116,000 voter registration forms have been posted to households across the city, asking residents to confirm their details so that the electoral register is up-to-date and everyone who is entitled to vote can do so. Posters, adverts and banners on buses displaying the phrase ‘don’t lose your voice’ will be seen over the next few months in the city. The aim is to remind people that if they are not on the electoral register they have no voice on local and national issues and will not be able to vote in next year’s elections.

on an automated phone line or on the Council’s website. If you still live at the same address and with the same people as last year you can just call Freephone 08082841425 or visit the Plymouth City Council elector registration website. More than 12,000 households used this service last year. If you have recently moved or there have been changes to the people living with you, you will need to complete the form with your amendments as usual. Students studying away from home, at university or college, can register in their home town as well in Plymouth as long as they do not vote twice.

Residents who get their forms back to the Council before Wednesday 6 November will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two iPADs.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Smith said: “We are keen to get as many residents registered to vote as possible and hope that by offering these options, more people will get to have their say at elections. If you don’t register or confirm the details we hold you will not be able to voice your opinions at the elections next year.”

Completing the registration form is easy. Residents who have no changes to make can confirm their details at any time

£1.84 billion worth of development approved

Plymouth planners are on peak performance Plymouth is THE place for developers with the city coming second only to Birmingham for the proportion of major applications processed on time.

Councillor Brian Vincent, the Cabinet Member whose portfolio includes planning, said: “We’ve already made it clear that Plymouth wants to see growth and we are making it as simple as possible for developers and companies to invest here.”

Latest figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that of over 200 major applications considered by Plymouth’s Planning Committee from June 2011 to June this year, 79.1 per cent were approved within target.

The figures show that the city planners have not only reached but surpassed the nationally-set targets for ensuring major planning applications are processed as speedily as possible, he said and added: “Some of these are incredibly complex projects worth millions of pounds.

Major applications are those for 10 or more dwellings and at least 1,000 square metres of non-residential floor space. Examples of developments that have been given the green light through the planning process in that time includes the Home Park development, Ernesettle extra care housing scheme, the Theatre Royal regeneration, Marine Academy Plymouth, St Budeaux, Royal William Yard (various) and the Admiralty House at Mount Wise including a hotel, restaurant, boutique and homes. Since 2009 the Council’s planning committee has approved £1.84 billion worth of development. So far this financial year, the committee has approved over £200 million – despite a recession.

“The message is getting out there that Plymouth is the place to invest, to build and a place that is actively seeking to get bigger and better.” The city fared better than Bristol and came fifth out of 400 local authorities across the country in terms of the volume of major decisions. Paul Barnard, assistant director for Planning Services said: “It is a testament to the hard work of the planning officers and the work of all the members of the Planning Committee, who are balancing the city’s need to grow and to build its reputation, with the needs of the people who live here. “All development carries an element of risk but having a clear and positive planning framework for investment decisions to be made makes the city more attractive.”

of the team – they are a real credit to us. “They capture perfectly many of the aspirations and values of our brilliant co-operative council vision. They work closely with schools, local suppliers and most importantly they listen to their customers and act on their feedback. The team is really making a difference to education in Plymouth by providing quality, healthy hot meals for children, which helps with concentration and ultimately achievement at school.” The Council’s Education Catering Service provides school lunches at 64 primary schools, five special schools, one nursery school, one Alternatively Complementary Education Service and two secondary academies. The price of a two-course school meal from the Service is £2.00 for primary and special schools and £2.20p for secondary schools. More information about the School Food Plan can be found at www.schoolfoodplan.com

On Saturday and Sunday November 9 and 10 they will be performing at Tor Bridge High as part of The Linda Mortimore School of Dance show ‘Dolly Mixtures’. The show will raise funds for local charities Hugs for Henry and Jeremiah’s Journey. The group under the leadership of Jo and Sam are working hard rehearsing, making costumes and painting scenery in preparation for the upcoming performances. Jo said: “We were given the opportunity to perform in Linda’s show and jumped at it; it is a fabulous opportunity for the children to perform and for some of them to make their stage debut’.

Choir prepares for Messiah Members of the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir are already getting in the mood for Christmas with Santa hats and tinsel and by standing up during rehearsals of Handel’s Messiah. It is a tradition that both singers and their audience take to their feet during the famous Hallelujah Chorus which brings the Messiah to a rousing climax – a tradition that has fascinating roots which the choir’s Christmas performance will be tapping into. It began when King George ll heard the piece. The King was so inspired by the uplifting and rousing music that he stood up. When everyone in the audience saw the monarch stand, they stood too. But the roots of ‘standing for the Hallelujah’ may well stretch back even further. It has always been the custom for Jews to stand whilst praising the Lord during “Hallel”, a practice which was passed on to Christendom where it is customary for congregations to stand for Songs of Praise (or Hymns). As Head of the Church of England, King George ll would certainly have been aware of the obligation to stand for ‘Hallelujah’ and might well have remained standing until

the last ‘amen’ at the end of the movement. After a busy summer for the choir, which included a concert in July and a tour of Brittany, musical director Christopher Fletcher has put this programme together with the coming season very much in mind. He said: “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Messiah. We used to perform this every year but have rested it for a while. Now it’s time to revisit it, and Part 1 is the most Christmassy, to which we’ll be adding the Hallelujah Chorus as a finale. Both the choir and audiences love it.” Christopher has paired Messiah with Bach’s Magnificat which he composed for Christmas 1723. This is not the first time the choir has performed the piece,

as Christopher recalls with real honesty: “One of my first concerts with the Philharmonic included Magnificat and frankly we didn’t do it very well. So we’re going to have another go and this time we will do it justice!” It is a challenging piece for the choir to learn, as Christopher explained: “Handel has written lots of convoluted, rippling semi-quaver runs in the choruses. They are not easy, but the overall effect never fails to exhilarate.” The Christmas concert will be on December 1 at 7.30pm in Plymouth Guildhall. Mayflower celebrations The bold headline in October’s issue of Shopper was not only eye-catching, but blazoned the promise of an ambitious event: ‘Mayflower 2020 plan is unveiled’, it read, with a strap line confirming the promise: ‘Spectacular celebrations to mark event’. Ambitious plans were detailed, not least being (and I trust the given order will be reversed before further publicity), ‘The President of the United States… standing on the Mayflower Steps alongside the head of the Royal Family to dedicate a new memorial to the Pilgrim Fathers.’ Then followed a list of what could certainly be ‘spectacular celebrations’. So far so good. But there was a major omission. It was so great, in fact, that I re-read the list in case I’d missed it the first time. I hadn’t. It was definitely not there. So exactly what was omitted? That the Pilgrim Fathers were in fact devout Christians. Nor was there any hint that, because they declined to conform to the law of those days enforcing attendance at Church of England services, they suffered persecution. Could the omission be because those responsible for the ‘ambitious plans’ reckon there is little mileage these days in an event focussed on devout Christians? That Christians suffering persecution for what they fervently believed is a turn-off in 21st century Britain? That Christians seeking religious freedom across the Atlantic would be a sure-fire flop today? It seems so. Let’s follow the group as they flee first to the relative calm and tolerance of 16th century Holland. There, they soon discovered that morals were too lax, and their children were ‘drawn away by evil examples into extravagance and dangerous courses’. So, bravely deciding to establish a new colony in North America, they set out to cross the vast Atlantic Ocean. The voyage itself was hazardous in the extreme, testing human endurance to the limit. The Mayflower was a relatively tiny ship of only 180 tons, measuring some 100 feet bow to stern. It had been used mainly for cross-Channel transport, taking English woollens to France and bringing French wine to London. This meant creature comforts were very basic for the 102 passengers and some 50 officers and crew crammed together. Initially the trip went smoothly, but soon they ran into strong gales and fierce storms. One of these caused a main beam to crack, and although they were more than half-way to their destination they seriously considered turning back. But such was their indomitable spirit that they managed to repair the ship sufficiently to continue. One passenger was in fact washed overboard in a storm, but catching a top sail halyard trailing in the water, he was pulled back on board. His determination mirrored that of everyone else in the Mayflower. Eventually they sighted land on November 9, 1620, and those who had endured miserable conditions for over two months offered a prayer of thanksgiving in the words of Psalm 100. These devout Christians succeeded by their faith and determination in creating a community free to worship God. This is a freedom we cherish on both sides of the Atlantic to this day. It would be a thousand pities if such freedom, so hard won, was completely overlooked even as we celebrate the achievement of the group of determined Christians who won it. We have seven more years in which to put their brave, devout endeavors to the forefront of our celebrations. We should not fail them, or He whom they worshipped. Rev John Fairweather-Tall

Anne is pride of Plymouth – and Britain!

An 86-year-old woman from Plymouth has captured the heart of the nation after winning a Pride of Britain Award.

Widow Anne Scarfe, who lives in Eggbuckland, received her award at a glittering televised ceremony in London attended by Royalty, celebrities and politicians. Anne is not only a Street Pastor but also works at the Shekinah Mission’s soup kitchen, helps out with other soup runs and is one of the team at a cafe for the homeless run by Mutley Baptist Church. Anne was winner of the West Country’s Local Hero prize and went forward to the national awards ceremony where she was chosen ahead of local heroes from all the ITV regions. Anne said: “I was absolutely amazed to have been chosen as winner,” said Anne. “My legs went to jelly when my name was announced and I couldn’t stand up. But the award is not just for me - it’s for all the people I work with as Street Pastors and at the soup kitchens.” Anne was presented with her award by Philip Schofield and Christine Bleakley at the ceremony, which was hosted by Carol Vorderman.

Pride of Britain - Anne Scarfe

She was given a special hug and kiss not only by Peter Andre but also by the members of boy band The Wanted. “They were wonderful,” said Anne, “I didn’t know who Peter Andre was until someone told me.” She also met Esther Rantzen, Kenny Dalglish, Ronnie Corbett and a host of other celebrities. The following day Anne had the surprise of her life when, along with the other award winners, she was whisked to 10 Downing Street to meet Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition leader Ed Milliband. “It was incredible - I actually got to sit in the Prime Minister’s seat in the Cabinet Room,” she said. Anne, who is a committed Christian, moved to Plymouth with her husband Tom 23 years ago to be nearer her daughter Anne and her son-in-law Keith, who worked in the city. Sadly, Tom died suddenly eight years ago and Anne was devastated. “I was not only heart broken, but also angry with God,” said Anne. “I raged at him for days and couldn’t believe he would take the love of my life. I had a wonderful 45 years with Tom, it was a true romance. Nothing could replace Tom.” In deep despair, Anne could not imagine life without Tom and saw no future. But she had a wake-up call from her daughter who said: ‘Mum, your grandchildren have lost their granddad and now it feels like they are losing you.’ “It brought me to my senses,” said Anne, “and I said to God ‘I will give you every ounce of love I had for Tom.’ “

Plymouth five years ago Anne was one of the first to sign up. She regularly patrols the streets of Mutley, North Hill, Union Street and the Barbican offering help and comforting word for vulnerable people and young people at risk. “I love the work and I think because I am old, young people like to talk to me. They don’t feel threatened by me.” Anne has had some amazing experiences on the streets of Plymouth and has many stories of the way her prayers and comforting words have helped people not only in distress but also on the point of suicide. Anne said: “Everything I do is for God’s glory and I am so privileged to be able to take His love onto the streets of Plymouth.

One of the residents Susan Walker after learning the tools to search for information on a website during the session, could not believe her luck when it led to her being reunited family members she had lost contact with for nearly 30 years. Susan’s search helped her locate a sister in Bermuda who is coming to visit Plymouth at the end of the month and reunited her with

her stepfather and brother. Surplus WEEE a local community interest company who repair, refurbish and donate electrical equipment heard about Susan’s discovery and donated a desk top computer for her to keep in contact with her reunited family. Triple success for City College

How you can reduce those energy bills

Carpentry trio excel in national competition

Advice Plymouth is helping you save money and keep out of debt this winter. We’re kicking the campaign off with our top five winter energy saving tips. It’s surprising how small changes can make a big difference to our energy bills. These tips will also make sure your home is as warm as possible which is good for your health and wellbeing. • Draw curtains at dusk to keep heat in the room and be careful not to drape them over radiators or heaters as this will funnel heat straight out the windows

By Chloe Severn of Advice Plymouth

• If you turn your heating down by just 1%, you’ll cut your heating bill by 10%. By fitting reflective foil behind your radiators (with shiny side facing radiator) you can help keep the heat indoors • Take showers instead of a bath. You will save time, money and water • Defrost fridges and freezers regularly to ensure that they continue to run efficiently. Take care to close your fridge or freezer door as quickly as possible and don’t put hot or warm food straight into the fridge – let it cool down first • And finally, the old classic: Don’t leave your television and other appliances on standby unnecessarily Winter can be an expensive and sometimes stressful time of year. It’s important to look after ourselves by keeping warm, even if that means just putting on an extra jumper and looking out for our neighbours and family. The problem of overspending is also a worry; especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas and our main advice for the winter is to try not to fall into unsustainable debt. We have loads of information on alternatives to high-interest loans and credit, just visit adviceplymouth.org.uk or come along to one of our events.

Rising energy bills are putting pressure on household finances

For more money saving advice and information make sure you drop in to our information event on the evening of the November 14 (come down after Christmas light switchon).

Bonfire Night warning Plymouth residents are being urged to report any stockpiles that are appearing in their neighbourhoods ahead of Bonfire Night. Illegal bonfires are dangerous and are often associated with anti-social behaviour. Plymouth City Council is asking people to report piles of wood and other materials on 01752 668000 so they can be cleared away. Cabinet member for Co-operatives and Community Development, Cllr Chris Penberthy said: “We want people to enjoy bonfire night festivities. Sadly big unauthorised bonfires can become sources of anti-social behaviour so it’s better for local communities if they are cleared away.” This is part of the multi-agency campaign with partners including the police, fire service and housing associations to ensure everyone in the city has a safe and fun Bonfire Night. Other measures include: • Encouraging people to attend properly controlled community events and the Council’s highly successful Bonfire Night celebrations on Plymouth Hoe • Checks to ensure anyone selling fireworks is fully registered or licensed • Cracking down on businesses selling fireworks to under 18s

Family, friends and colleagues devastated by death of 32 year old

Fundraising group’s £10,000 target in memory of brain tumour victim Paul Cupis A new fundraising group has been formed in Plymouth, with the aim of raising over £10,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity. The fundraising group has been formed by staff at Plymouth based Tamar Telecommunications, following the death of their colleague, Paul Cupis in June. Paul was 32 when he passed away from a brain tumour. The launch coincided with what would have been Paul’s 33rd birthday on October 13. The group aim to raise both awareness and vital funds through The Paul Cupis Fund. Money raised will go to The Brain Tumour Charity, to support research into new MRI techniques as well as vital research into brain tumours. The fundraising group known as The Brain Tumour Charity Paul Cupis Fund, will be fundraising around the Plymouth area over the coming months. Events in the pipeline includes parachute jumps as well as collections. Already, in the first few weeks the fundraising total has reached £2,750. The progress can be followed online at www.JustGiving.com/PaulCupis-Fund Kevin Christoforou, managing director of Tamar Telecommunications said: “We were all

devastated when Paul passed away. Paul was a well-liked and respected member of staff and is greatly missed. We are all eager to start raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity Paul Cupis Fund. The support shown already by local businesses and individuals has been amazing.” Sarah Lindsell, chief executive of The Brain Tumour Charity, added: “Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved over the last 40 years.” “We are leading the way in changing this and truly fighting brain tumours on all fronts through our work, including a £2.5m investment into research this year alone.” “The Brain Tumour Charity does not receive any government or statutory funding for our work and relies 100% on voluntary donations. “The money raised by The Paul Cupis Fund will help make vital improvements in the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of brain tumours and help us to save lives in the future. “Many of our groups are set up in very difficult circumstances following a diagnosis of a brain tumour or loss of a loved one and we are truly grateful for their support.” The Paul Cupis Fund was set up with the full support of Paul’s family. Paul’s father, David Cupis said: “We want

to thank Paul’s friends and work colleagues who have set up the Paul Cupis fund to raise money and awareness for the Brain Tumour Charity. “We are still in shock of what happened to Paul and hope more understanding of brain tumours may help explain why fit, healthy people, like Paul, simply die. “Paul loved Plymouth and took great pride in the area so we hope that the people of Plymouth will fully support these fund raising events. “Paul took part in several fund raising events himself and was about to be a part of a three year research study to improve MRI techniques. “Paul will be missed by everyone who knew him but I hope that our loss will help others in the future.” Paul’s Story, along with those of other people who have been affected by Brain Tumours, can be read online at The Brain Tumour Charity’s website: www.thebraintumourcharity. org/paulcupis The Paul Cupis Fund can be followed on Twitter @PaulCupisFund as well as liked on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/ PaulCupisFund If anyone wishes to make a donation to The Paul Cupis Fund, the JustGiving www. MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey

Where there’s a will... Almost exactly 224 years ago (13 November 1789 to be precise!), Benjamin Franklin wrote one of the most famous quotes about tax in a letter. “Nothing is certain except death and taxes.” A number of multi-national companies may disagree about the latter, but the former is something we will all face at some stage. This month, I share a few pointers about wills. This is generally left to lawyers, but it does no harm to remind us all of their importance.

• Do you have a business? Do you want it sold, run by your existing team while it’s sold, closed down, and perhaps handed on to an employee?

You should always take some legal advice, as some “ordinary” words have legal meanings that would cause confusion to your exectuors.

• Do you want your beneficiaries to have immediate access to their inheritance, or would you prefer to set up a trust, perhaps to protect them from themselves! (People can do strange things when handed an unexpected sum of money).

• List your assets, and to whom you want them to go. Be careful if you intend to “leave the rest of your estate to…..” as the value of your estate may grow substantially during your lifetime.

LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION Since 1985

Any quantity delivered from 5,000 - 100,000+

• Do you have specific wishes about how/ where you would like to be buried or cremated?

UK law does provide a measure of protection for spouses/civil partners, but the provisions are not as generous as you think. If you live with a partner outside of marriage/ civil partnership, do not expect anything to go to them unless you have made a will. Without a will, it can take years to sort out even a modest estate.

So what should you be thinking about?

TARGETED, AFFORDABLE, EFFECTIVE

• Leave clear instructions about who is to care for any children/dependent relatives/ vulnerable adults who rely on you. Make sure you get the agreement of your preferred guardian(s). Make sure you have more than one, in case something happens to your preferred choice. For example, we selected guardians for our children and both couples divorced which made it inappropriate for our children to be placed with them. Include pets in your list of dependents.

• Who is going to ‘execute’ your wishes (ie put them into practice)? You’ll need to let them know where they can find a copy of the will.

• What happens if a previous partner/ spouse remarries? • What do you want to happen with your

share of any jointly held property? Holding it as “joint tenants” means the other owner gets your share automatically. Tenants in common can choose who gets their share of the property. And when you’ve made a will, review it every five years, when you marry, divorce or have another child. An out of date will can cause almost as much stress as having no will at all. So if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see my local solicitor…..

Launch of new health initiative available across the country and plenty of information out there if you know where to look, but having several contact points offering services may act as a barrier to efficient service delivery.

A brand new health improvement initiative has been launched by Plymouth Community Healthcare (PCH). Livewell, run by the PCH Public Health Improvement Team, is a point of contact for the public to find out how they can develop healthier lifestyles. There is a telephone advice line where they can be directed to a whole range of resources as well as referral to specialist help for topics such as giving up smoking, weight management, healthy eating, physical activity and health checks.

The telephone line is backed up by a website, Facebook page and twitter which is being updated almost daily with new and exciting things people can do for themselves along with links to fact sheets, leaflets, recipes and apps.

Development Award this year. We have worked really hard with local training providers and Seafish to get our staff the best training possible and to help improve our service to customers.

Sponsored by James T Blakeman and Son, the Staff Training and Development Award is a celebration of educational excellence in the industry and rewards businesses that are committed to developing their staff to the highest level.

“We believe that Staff Training and Development is key to a successful business and we are always looking at ways we can help our employees to build on their knowledge and develop their skills further.”

For more information call us on:

Those making the shortlist are judged on a wide range of criteria including staff interview processes, business training policy and staff appraisal procedures.

Harbourside will now fry off against: Mr C’s in Selby, North Yorkshire and Petrou Brothers in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire in one final round of judging before the winner is revealed at the prestigious awards ceremony, hosted by Michelin starred television chef Jean Christophe Novelli, held in London in January 2014, where the overall winner will be crowned.

Plymouth’s Harbourside Fish & Chips has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Staff Training and Development Award category of The National Fish & Chip Awards 2014, organised by Seafish.

Sarah Lock, of Habourside Fish & Chips commented: “Harbourside are really proud to be shortlisted for the Staff Training and

“We also achieved our Investors in People this year which has helped us to develop further highlighting key areas for improvement.

Philip Blakeman, managing director of James T Blakeman & Son commented: “We’re proud to be sponsoring this fantastic award category again in 2014 and as always the shortlisted businesses are a credit to the industry they represent. “In the fish frying industry, it’s as much about the people as the product, so you simply have to pay attention to the way you train your staff. “A skilled, savvy, well organised team can make all the difference to a business and it’s all down to the teaching and support they receive on the job.”

It hardly seems any time at all since we were out enjoying the fine weather and days out. Already, it’s time to look forward to Christmas. For many of us this happy time of the year can turn out to be a horror story! The good news is that there’s no need to panic, just take a deep breath, make an early start and everything will be fine. Plan ahead for the things you’ll need for your home, like food and decorations then things for family, friends and relatives like cards and gifts. If you’ve arranged special evenings out you’ll need to make sure that you are booked in well in advance for hair or beauty treatment, and you might also like to get the car up to scratch if you are planning to travel over Christmas. Take a little time to make a gift list, who are you buying a present for and do you have any ideas what you’re giving? Don’t make it too detailed or you’ll miss out on the fun of finding something truly different. One of the problems with gift shopping these days is that so many people seem to have everything that they need and in many cases it’s the personal thought that counts. If you don’t like crowds or standing in long queues at check outs make an early start and most importantly

Story and pictures by Roy Perring look closer to home. Just off Mutley Plain, the Hyde Park neighbourhood group of shops offers one of the most exciting ranges of independent traders in the city. Here you will be able to find everything from butchers and bakers to gift shops and galleries. There are also florists, hairdressers and more besides, all within a short walk of each other, and all with friendly, personal advice. Help is also at hand for our pets, it would be a shame to neglect them whilst we are having a great time. Many of the shops already have a great selection of Christmas items in stock and a special ‘late night’ Christmas launch has been planned for Friday 22nd November. The lights will be on and entertainment should be on hand at the event which takes place from 3.30 to 7pm. For thousands of Plymouth residents, Hyde Park is just a short walk away or a few minutes on the bus so lets take a look around and get an idea of whats on offer. A TIME FOR GIVING They always say that, “Christmas is a time of giving”. At Hyde Park there’s no shortage of gifts to give, and you might fall for something for yourself while your there. The shops are nearly all independent shops rather than

parts of a chain and there’s a lot more chance to find something thats a bit different. In Hyde Park Road itself, Treat has been offering beautiful gifts for many years. Nicky Cottenham has gathered a very personal selection of attractive items. Last years hit were beautiful Christmas ‘trees’ which make an inexpensive stocking filler whilst at around £9 her range of scarves are simply delightful. Nicky is quick to point out that they represent very good value. If you are looking for a special card for someone at Treat you’ll find something more personal that you get from a supermarket box. Nearby is the very well respected Artmill Gallery. Throughout the year this gallery is home to exhibitions by regional artists. From paintings to ceramics there’s always something good to see and buy. Artmill are also a major framing service in the city with a huge range of mouldings and mounts to create a perfect frame for your paintings, prints, posters or certificates. The Christmas exhibition includes work by Vincent Wilson, Adela Powell and Katrina Solano. Textile artist Beryl Coles will be exhibiting for the first time. Three popular local artists, Michael Hill, Connor McIntyre and Rita Smith will also have work on show. Book into Peverell Garage for a service and check if there’s anything else you need before the Christmas break arrives. SIT BACK AND ENJOY Now you’ve sorted Christmas out with a short walk or drive from home, you can sit back and plan how you are going to have a great relaxing time with family and friends. I’d be surprised that if you take up the advice of visiting the shops at Hyde Park that you won’t end up going home with a little something special for yourself!

CARING FOR FAMILIES Toddlers and babies just love it in the gym By Karen Pilkington There’s that old adage that a dog is for life, not just Christmas... well we at the Plymouth Shopper just wanted to remind ourselves that the same applies to children. At this time of year, when the shops are full of ways to spend lavishly on your children and grandchildren, we’re concentrating on some of the necessities of life with small people that matter all the year round.

Family friendly eating at Heaven

One of the things I’d like to mention is that childcare and baby activity groups are not all the same. With the development of early years education, there has been a vast amount of research into child development, which has

filtered out of paediatric journals into some really fun child based activities.

personable style and incredible amounts of energy.

A particular group that really uses that knowledge to produce amazing weekly sessions for children from 4 months to 4 years is Gym Bubbas, based in Morgans Gym, Christian Mill Business Park, Plymouth.

Personally I was amazed at how much Connie, my one year old enjoyed and participated in her free trial session. She was exhilerated without being over stimulated, and as we have come back for more, Kate (who knows all the children’s names and personalities) has become her best friend.

Main instructor Kate has a huge knowledge of how the body develops, based on her training as a gymnast and coach herself and pours this into each 45 minute session. Babies and children learn predominantly by acting and doing (that’s why we dont produce mini Einsteins by sitting them down in front of the Discovery Channel 8 hours a day!) - and Kate and her husband Wayne develop exercises, songs and structured bursts of play to really engage with all the children with their very

Without being pressurized Connie is also learning all sorts of new skills – sharing, helping, taking turns, masses of new vocabulary as well as forward and backward rolls, balance, and strength. The groups are kept small and the attitude is very friendly, encouraging and relaxed – and I don’t feel like a failed parent if Connie chooses to behave in typical toddler fashion.

A theatre company for children and young people aged 6-18. Try your hand at performing, set design and construction, costumes and props, stage, make-up and much more.

It’s good to know that getting out and about with young children is not as impossible as it first seems, despite their inability to stay still or quiet for longer than 30 seconds at a time! In the run up to Christmas, do take time out to introduce your young ones to the benefits of eating out as a family with the minimum amount of stress.

Juniors (6 – 9 years) ......1:00 – 2:00 Inters (10 – 13 years) ...2:00 – 3:00 Seniors (14 – 18 years) ...3:00 – 4:00

As a young Dad himself, Mehdi Taheri, Heaven’s main driving force, understands all the pressures parents and grandparents face at the prospect of a restaurant meal, and he and his friendly staff are striving to make it a hugely enjoyable time for everyone.

Saturdays at

Ford Baptist Church Alfred Rd, Ford PL2 1QB

Very young children eat free at Heaven – taking the stress away from cash strapped parents when they order something only for little ones to eat the smallest bit off the plate.

Phone: 07760467857

Older children can chose half price dishes, allowing them to sample new foods without being overwhelmed, or stick to reliable favourites to keep the peace.

Email: plymouthchildrenstheatre@gmail.com PlymouthChildrensTheatreWorkshop @PlymCTW

The relaxed atmosphere and staff are happy to accommodate the need for children to get down from the table for a wander and Mehdi is exploring possibilities to make the space even more child friendly with specific things for them to do away from the table, allowing the adults to enjoy a glass of wine together and maybe even have the time for an uninterrupted conversation – even if only a brief one!

CARING FOR FAMILIES Hobby Horse Nursery is celebrating again The successful family owned day nursery Hobby Horse, in Plympton, has just been awarded the Bristol Standard Quality Assurance Mark for the 8th year in succession. The award was presented at a ceremony at the Novotel in October.

To gain the award an annual submission is put before a panel of Early Years Professionals who scrutinise the standards and quality of both care and education that is provided for children 0 – 5 years old. The submission is also subject to audit and is completely in line with Ofsted requirements for good and outstanding providers of childcare. Being awarded the Bristol Standard for the last eight years is testament of the hard work, professionalism and commitment of the Hobby Horse team where quality counts.

It is an accolade to the staff ... Jayne, Laura, Jessica, Katie, Gemma, Shelley and trainee staff, and justly deserved, as they work tirelessly to ensure that each child’s needs are met and are given a wide choice of play and learning experiences. The owners Cherrill Phillips and Rachael Edgeler are totally committed to their staff and ensure that they are highly trained, attend ongoing training to keep them abreast of all new developments and requirements to ensure that the high quality care is maintained, and offering the best development that every child deserves, focussing on each child as an individual. Aside of ensuring that every child receives the best care the staff still find time to organise fund raising events and in the next couple of months will be making donations to encompass Harvest Festival and Children in Need. Gardening Notes November is an unpredictable month in the gardening calendar. The days are getting much shorter and the weather is gradually getting colder and wetter. Many people may think of November as being a quiet month in the garden where plants stop growing. Fortunately for us, our warmer south west climate means many plants actually keep growing through the winter, though at a slower pace. To me, November is one of the busiest months. It is this time of year when most gardens are ‘put to bed’.

By Luke Foster of Man for All Seasons

Plymouth Guild selected to lead bid for new social enterprise initiative Plymouth City Council has chosen Plymouth Guild to lead a funding bid for a new social enterprise run by older people for older people.

• Keep cutting grass as required. Lift the height of cut to allow for a thicker lawn to develop for protection over the winter.

The bid which is worth up to £6 million over six years is being submitted to the Big Lottery Fund’s Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better programme. It funds communityled projects that enable older people who are most at risk of social isolation and loneliness to lead more fulfilling lives.

• Continue raking leafs from lawns and patios. Wet leaves can kill a lawn if left on it, so rake up, and collect them to make leaf mould for the spring.

As a co-operative council, giving people control of the services they receive is a priority as well as supporting social enterprises.

• It is not too late to feed your lawn for the autumn/winter. An autumn lawn feed contains less nitrogen and more phosphorus. This helps roots develop whilst lessening leaf growth which could be damaged by frost and snow over winter.

This project aims to tackle social isolation by getting older people more involved in their communities and in the design and delivery of services.

Here are some jobs you could be doing in the garden now:

• Scarify your lawn if you have a lot of moss or thatch build up. • Most herbaceous perennials have usually finished their growth cycle now, so prune back to ground level and apply a good layer of mulch of compost. This will feed and protect your plants over winter. • Now is a good time to lift and divide herbaceous perennials. This free method of propagation produces plants for free and is really easy to do. • Prune fruit trees when their leaves have fallen. • If not already done, plant spring bulbs such as Narcissus and Tulips. • Rake off the tops of mole hills which appear. The soil these little creatures bring to the surface is often of excellent quality and can be used elsewhere in the garden. Plants are definitely at their best this time of year… Autumn is a fantastic time of year for leaf colour. As the light levels decrease

and chlorophyll (green pigment) levels lower, leaves have a chance to show off their other pigments. Most popular at this time of year are the Acers. Striking colours or reds, yellows, oranges catch the eye in any garden. Acer palmatum ‘Osakuzuki’ has stunning autumn colour from pink to orange to brilliant red, all given a skeletal backdrop of almost black branches. The characteristics of many plants are at their best this time of year, here are five of my favourites... 1. Leaf colour – Euonymus alatus (Spindle Bush) 2. Berries – Sorbus aucuparia (Mountain Ash) 3. Bark – Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple) 4. Flower – Schizostylis coccinea ‘Fenland Daybreak’ (Kaffir Lilly) 5. Scent – Abelia x grandiflora

Cabinet member for Public Health and Adult Social Care, Councillor Sue McDonald said: “I’m very pleased that we will be working with Plymouth Guild on this funding bid. They already run some of our advice and information services. “There is a wide choice of activities and opportunities for an active social life in the city but we have to make sure people know about them and are given the right support so they can get involved. “This social enterprise means that older people who have a great deal to offer are given the opportunity to help others.”

George Plenderleith, chief executive, Plymouth Guild said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the lead voluntary sector organisation for such an important bid for the city and can bring a wealth of experience of working with socially isolated older people and project development.” Sue Benjamin, from the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group who was involved in the selection process, said: “We are pleased that Plymouth Guild has been chosen to lead a bid for a new social enterprise and look forward to working with them in the future.”

ON THE BEAT News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team By Claire Bull, Police Community Support Officer for Peverell and Hartley For over 400 years, bonfires have burned on November 5th to mark the failed Gunpowder plot of 1605. Preparations for the evening will result in many bonfires and fireworks being displayed throughout homes in Plymouth, as well as the large display held on Plymouth Hoe. Children are excited to see the fireworks in the sky as the smell of bonfires permeates the air. I am Claire Bull and along with Chris Curran we are the Police Community Support Officers for Peverell and Hartley. We also cover the area of Central Park. Working alongside the PCSO’s for Peverell is PC Gareth Davies who is the Neighbourhood Beat Manager. This month I will start with November’s bonfire night celebrations by providing a few basic safety tips on how to keep safe. I will then provide some further safety advice for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists to make them more visible as the evenings draw in. Keep safe on bonfire night Devon and Cornwall Police is highlighting the importance of safety on Bonfire Night. The consequence of misusing fireworks can be irreversible and can destroy lives. We understand that fireworks are a traditional part of bonfire night celebrations, but they are dangerous explosives and cause many serious accidents every year. Patrols are being stepped up in the Devonport and West area of Plymouth and we have displayed posters

urging people not to fool with fireworks. Residents are reminded that it is illegal: • To let off any fireworks in a public place. • To set off fireworks between midnight and 7am on bonfire night. • For a member of the public to possess a “display” style firework (category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals). • To cause unnecessary suffering to animals with fireworks. Maximum penalty £5,000 and/or six months in prison. The safest way for people to enjoy fireworks is to go to a professionally organised event. If you do decide to put on your own display here are some practical tips: 1. Only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks. 2. Don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks. 3. Light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper. 4. Make sure everyone stands well back. 5. Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks. 6. Direct any rocket fireworks well away from people. 7. NEVER go back to a firework that has been lit even if it has not gone off it could still explode. 8. Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark from a reputable seller. This shows that the firework meets British or European Safety standards. 9. Follow the instructions on each firework and use a torch to read it. 10.Make suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off Catherine wheels or rockets.

PCSO Claire Bull

It’s important to remember that fireworks are explosives and burn at high temperatures, so they need careful handling and storage. In particular, sparklers can reach temperatures more than 15 times as hot as boiling water and five times hotter than cooking oil. By following our advice you can minimise harm to your family and friends: • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. • Never throw used fireworks, paraffin or petrol, on a bonfire. • Take care around bonfires, especially keeping clothing away. • Make sure bonfires are out and surroundings are safe before leaving. • Misfired or partly used fireworks should be soaked in a container of water and the manufacturer should be contacted for advice on disposal. • Keep pets indoors as most animals are scared by the bright lights and noise. • Supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five. • Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves. • Put used sparklers, hot end down, into a bucket of sand or water. More children than adults get injured by fireworks every year and the police want to stop that from rocketing! Please take the time to consider the safety of others so that you may all have a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night. Be bright, be seen this winter Devon and Cornwall Police are urging pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists to make themselves more visible as the evenings draw in.

Now that the days are shorter and the winter weather sets in, road users will become less visible to motorists so road safety officers are reminding everyone it is important to be seen not only at night but also in bad weather. Walking and cycling are two of the healthiest ways to travel but when the light or weather is poor, easy-to see clothing is a must. Whether you travel by foot or on two wheels, it is crucial to invest in high-visibility clothing and stay safe on the road. Bright, highly visible colours make sense when out in daylight, whereas highly reflective materials are crucial in low light conditions. Even wearing an inexpensive hi-visibility bib or rucksack cover could make a big difference. Cyclists and pedestrians are particularly at risk when daylight hours reduce during the winter. Cyclists should check that they have suitable lights and that they work correctly; even if you as a cyclist can see other vehicles, can they see you? Alexander Graham Bell’s city links Nowadays, everywhere we go, someone seems to be on the phone. Mobile phones have become a way of life and everyone seems to have one (I haven’t!). In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell became the first person to obtain a patent for an ‘apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically’. The first words spoken on the phone were to Bell’s assistant and were: ‘Mr. Watson! Come here, I want to see you!’ which Mr Watson heard clearly on the receiver in an adjoining room. Many believe Elisha Gray, an American electrical engineer, was the true inventor of the telephone although Bell beat him to the patent office by a matter

Writer Derek Tait looks at the time which Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone spent in Plymouth. Derek has had many books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk telephone was ‘ahoyhoy’ which derived from the nautical term ‘Ahoy!’. It never caught on, however, today the phrase is often used by Montgomery Burns in the cartoon, ‘The Simpsons’!

of hours. A legal battle ensued which Bell won. Amazingly, one of the first telephone installations in the UK was in Plymouth at Tor Grove in Weston Peverell, now known as Pennycross.
Alexander Graham Bell was visiting the town in 1877 to lecture about the invention of the telephone when he stayed at the residence of Robert Bayly, who was elected to the first Devon City Council and was also a Justice of the Peace. His father founded the Marine Biological Association.
While staying with Bayly, Bell installed a telephone line which connected the house and the gardener’s cottage. It remained in use for many years before the apparatus was dismantled and presented to the Plymouth Museum.
Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh. Both his mother and wife were deaf which interested him in experimenting with hearing devices which eventually led on to his invention of the telephone. Although he is most famous for this invention, he felt that it intruded on his more important scientific research and refused to have a telephone in his study. Throughout his life, he referred to himself as a teacher to the deaf rather than the inventor of the telephone.

Bell’s preferred salutation when answering the newly-invented

Bell is also credited with the invention of the metal detector in 1881. Bell later said, ‘Great discoveries and improvements invariably involve the cooperation of many minds. I may be given credit for having blazed the trail but when I look at the subsequent developments, I feel the credit is due to others rather than to myself.’

Alexander Graham Bell and (below) in later years

An early candlestick phone

No doubt he would be amazed if he could see what his invention has become today.

In 1888, he became one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society. The telephone has changed greatly over the years. Most homes didn’t have their own telephone until the 1960s or 1970s and, if you wanted to make a phone call, a short walk to a nearby red phone box was the answer. Of course, with the introduction of mobile phones, many phone boxes have now disappeared. Alexander Graham Bell died in 1922. During his funeral, it was reported that, ‘every phone on the continent of North America was silenced in honour of the man who had given to mankind the means for direct communication at a distance.’

Work of talented arts graduates on display at Council House Plymouth art graduates have been showing off their work at an exclusive exhibition in Plymouth’s prestigious Council House. The exhibition is a part of the Open Arts programme and a wide variety of arts disciplines from the city’s major colleges are currently on show. Invited guests were welcomed to the Council House by the Community Development Councillor Chris Penberthy, who has supported the scheme with the ‘Community Grant’.

three year degree course in Applied Art at the Plymouth College of Art. Now based at Flameworks in Richmond Walk and working on her Masters with the PCA, she took the opportunity to show her exhibit to Chris Penberthy. In a statement about her work, Palimpsest 2013, Charmaine says, “Taking inspiration from disused and abandoned industrial sites the work is a reflection of the decay and corrosion of things once cherished”.

Work is on display from 26 students on a variety of themes including drink driving, racism, body image and domestic abuse.

It provides an exploration into the impact that we have on each other and our environment, a spoken word, a gesture, all leaving a lasting impression that cannot be erased permanently.

Among those attending the event was Charmaine Marshall who’s completed a

CREDIT UNION OPENS NEW SHOP IN THE CITY CENTRE A brand new city centre shop premises for the City of Plymouth Credit Union opened in October. The shop at Frankfort Gate has been chosen so people can get easy access to the credit union and financial services and will be open to all. The credit union offers affordable lending, savings, budget accounts and direct payments for landlords. All saving are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and all saving and loans come with free life insurance. Paul Williams, manager of City of Plymouth Credit Union said: “This will give people in Plymouth and within a 20 mile radius a real alternative when it comes to savings and affordable loans.” The Archdeacon of Plymouth, Ian Chandler and Cabinet member for Co-operatives and Community Development Councillor Chris Penberthy officially opened the shop on October 17, International Credit Union Day. Plymouth City Council has funded the refurbishment of the shop so it could be used by the credit union. Cllr Penberthy said: “We have invested in the shop so a new, full time credit union outlet can operate in the heart of the city. We know that people often need financial help and it is important that the credit union is easy for people to reach.”

to celebrate the fantastic work of our arts graduates. “It is the second time we’ve opened up the foyer to the Council House and it is a really wonderful show. It has been inspiring to work in partnership with the Plymouth University, Plymouth College of Art and Marjons in developing this exhibit I look forward to continuing to develop this work.”

Whilst the Council House is not not normally open to the public there will be access for the exhibition which runs until the end of November on selected dates. It will also offer residents a chance to see the beautiful imposing glass panels by John Hutton. For details of how to visit the exhibition see www.plymouth.gov.uk

The nuts and bolts for businesses A series of workshops designed to give new and existing businesses the low-down on everything they need to know is being run by Plymouth City Council. The events are being organised by the Council’s public protection team and the first one of the series was being held on Thursday October 31 at the Lower Hall of the Guildhall. They are being put together to help companies tap into the wealth of support and guidance available to businesses from the Council as well as other agencies, and to encourage businesses to grow and thrive. Sessions include: • ‘We’ve got your back’ – a speedy introduction and networking session from organisations who work with the business community. • ‘Crossing the i’s and dotting the t’s’ – companies and sole traders can hear from council teams about regulations that affect how they operate. This includes talks about Trading Standards, health and safety, business rates, commercial waste and the laws surrounding it, business rates, planning, age restricted sales and licensing. • Getting sorted – four workshops which look at topics including using social media to help business, funding and finance opportunities for Plymouth’s small businesses, food hygiene ratings scheme and how to do business with big city organisations such as the Council and the University. Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Brian

Vincent said: “We have council teams who make sure laws are followed, but we are also more than happy to advise businesses and arm them with everything they need so that they can avoid problems. “These events will give companies and individuals a chance to talk to relevant teams about the regulations that affect the way they run their business. “But it will also help open eyes about the variety of support on offer from the Council and other city organisations which are keen to help businesses to grow.” Council leader Tudor Evans added: “Our small businesses are the backbone to our economy and we need to do all we can to support them. There is a lot of support available for businesses of every type, but people are simply not aware of them. We are here to help.” Organisations expected to attend include the South West Investment Group, Frederick’s Foundation, Plymouth Pat Lib, Prince’s Trust, Plymouth City College and Working Links. Places will be limited to 200 and anyone may attend, however invites to new food businesses and low scoring businesses will be invited to attend one of the workshops. This is the first of four events with others scheduled to run on January 23, April 24 and July 24. Beware of unregulated advisors When you are looking for legal advice on any topic you may not, at first, consider using a solicitor. Perhaps you are put off by stories of people who moan about their legal bill. You may, instead try other people who provide legal services. It is important that people recognise the difference between companies that offer ‘legal services’ and that of solicitors. This is because companies that are not solicitors are not regulated in the same way and may not be regulated at all. By way of example solicitors must act in their clients’ best interests and therefore cannot sell clients something that they do not need. Have you or somebody you know gone to get some advice and ended up buying one of the advisor’s products when that was not what you planned at all? Mis-selling has been a common feature over the last few years. We cannot do that. Our advice has to be in your best interests, not the firm’s best interest. We have come across instances where people have been advised to create an expensive and unnecessary trust. Inappropriate wills have been prepared with additional bolt-ons that meant that fees are far higher than we charge. We cannot open our doors unless we have professional indemnity insurance. This means that if an error occurs you are protected against any loss. Unregulated advisors may have this but, if not, you have no protection and you will not know. Generally, solicitors will complete six years of training before qualifying whereas some companies in the unregulated sector often refer to their staff as ‘lawyers’ after completing a training course of weeks, if not days. It is therefore vital that you ensure that the people advising you are qualified to do so. If in doubt that the person providing a legal service to you is a solicitor, please look for them on www. thelawsociety.org.uk

More successes for the city’s 1000 Club Nearly 600 businesses have now signed up to the city’s 1000 Club – just days after it celebrated a year of success after success. The club set itself a target of attracting 1000 companies and organisations to give the city’s young people a head start with their careers. Now it has shot passed the half way mark with this goal, with now 580 companies now on board and more signing up all the time and opportunities opening up for young people. The club was launched last year in response to growing concerns that Plymouth’s young people were being finding it difficult to find employment or gain the work related skills required by employers. Council Leader Tudor Evans: “This is tremendous news – everyone wants to be part of this club – because it is making it easy as possible for employers and enthusiastic young people to find each other. “We want to make sure that a generation of young people are not being left behind because economic circumstances are not quite right. They need to get experience under their belts, to build confidence and get familiar with the world of work. “This is happening in spades thanks to the extraordinary generosity of time and spirit that so many businesses are showing and already over 1,600 young people have benefited from this support.” One 18-year-old has landed herself a full-time job, thanks

to the 1000 Club and Plymouth’s pioneering workskills bootcamp, held at the Council’s City Business Park in Stoke. The bootcamp aims to improve the employability skills of young people and offers intensive training and support, looking at interview techniques, using computer and office equipment and other issues such as the tone and language of business communications. Emma Webber has now been taken on by Molyneux Associates after the company’s owner Paul Molyneux talked to the candidates on their last day. The company offers financial advice on business and personal needs including investments, pensions, insurances and mortgages. Paul said: “I was asked to give a talk to the participants and said if anyone wanted to talk to me in more detail they can. Emma approached me afterwards, which shows she’s got initiative and was interested, and I was able to offer her a job.” Emma, who began working at the company’s offices at the park a few weeks ago and as the company is now part of the 1000 Club, was given a free week’s bus travel from Citybus – another club member. Emma, who hopes to go to university next year added: “The bootcamp gave me a real flavour of the different aspects of work – I didn’t expect to get a job so quickly but it’s great. I work with lovely people, getting paid and getting experience as well.” For more information about the 1000 Club and how to sign up visit www.1000club.co.uk.

Experience

The mysteries of life...and death I recently attended the funeral of an amazing person who had truly made a positive contribution to others throughout her life. This individual was a Christian who, in her later life, suffered twenty eight years from five different cancers. She died in her early seventies. The tributes at the funeral were not only very beautiful and edifying, but all confirmed that she possessed a tremendous faith in God which despite her personal challenges never stopped her giving to others and being a joy to be around. As far as all were concerned who attended the funeral, she had eagerly passed through ‘a door’ into her ‘eternal rest’ with great joy. I had the privilege of praying on a very regular basis with this person for her health issues and we always knew that God could heal her at any time.

The mystery of the circumstances surrounding her life was the deeper work that was going on within. We used to joke that even if God physically healed her, she would still need to go through the ‘door of death’. Lazarus was raised from the dead, but still died. We discussed that the greatest miracle wasn’t physical healing, but the miracle of salvation which enabled you to pass through the door of death into heavenly peace and eternity with Him. The Cross of Jesus Christ is the central element of the Christian faith. On the

positive side of this historical event is the fulfilment of God coming to earth as a human being; demonstrating the unconditional love of God the Father and defeating the power of Satan within our lives as we depend on Jesus Christ and follow the plan He has for our lives. Jesus died on the cross, descended into hell and took back the keys of death and hell and rose again to sit in heavenly places with His Father. However, whilst individuals who put their faith in Jesus Christ can appropriate this great security and freedom in God, there is still a suffering element of the Cross of Jesus Christ. Over 160,000 Christians suffer greatly across the globe because of their faith. These are people who will not bow the knee to the pressure of compromising the freedom of their ‘religious conscience’. Some end up in prison, are tortured and lose their earthly life for the better life to come. So while there is the spiritual reality that we will not die eternally as we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we will still taste what is called the first death. The issue of freedom of religious conscience is what motivated the Pilgrim Fathers to leave these shores for the New World as it was called then. Fifty or sixty years ago most people in our nation would have understood what I have written. Now, as we move away in our individual hearts from God, this knowledge and experience is being lost and we are becoming spiritually illiterate from a Christian perspective. This is why we work within the ministry of Cross Rhythms - to somehow bring this revelation to people, that they are so precious that God could do no more than give us free will to find true love and the power of Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit to live a life of good news, even in the tough times. This understanding motivated the civilising process that our liberal democracies in the West were built upon. Let’s not forget the lessons of history for our own sake.
