Life goes on... Brexit or no Brexit So many momentous events have taken place nationally and internationally since the last issue, that it is difficult to keep a focus on what is happening locally. But whatever the outcome of the EU Referendum it is important to maintain a ‘business as usual’ approach for Plymouth and its people. We’re entering the summer holiday period which means a really busy time in the city for young and old alike. A few days after this issue goes to press tens of thousands of people will be gathering on The Hoe for the spectacular MTV Crashes Plymouth. A few weeks later The Hoe will be inundated once again for the everpopular British Fireworks Championships. Meanwhile from August 5 to 21 the City Centre Piazza will be the location for the Rio Olympic Fan Zone when events will be screened live on the Big Screen. Let’s hope for lots of British medal successes There will be more outdoor entertainment at the Royal William Yard during the same dates when the Barbican Theatre will stage a beautiful version of Shakespeare’s classic romance Romeo & Juliet. There’s a special feature about the performance on the centre pages of this issue. We’ve got a fascinating feature on the preparations for the impending closure of the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery to make way for the new £32 million History Centre. We have an interview with Paul Brookes, the programme director for the new History Centre, who gives an insight into the huge task of packing up to one million artefacts to be placed in store until the new attraction opens in 2020. Hope you enjoy the issue and the summer break!

CRAFT MATTERS

Lizzy Evans

Passion for crafts makes a great partnership A passion for crafts has led to a partnership between a leading Plymouth artist and a popular city centre cafe. Make at 140 Vauxhall Street in the Barbican is run by Lizzy Evans and as well as being a cafe offers haberdashery, modern fabrics and making kits for sale. It also offers a diverse programme of workshops for all ages every week providing inspiration for experienced crafters, as well as encouraging beginners to try something new. After the success of her button shop Funky Poppy, Lizzy Evans opened Make in November 2015. Funky Poppy has moved into this new space, so customers can buy beautiful fabrics and buttons at the same time. Now a partnership has formed between the crafting haven and Plymouth based lino printer Jan Brewerton. Lizzy Evans explained: “When I met Jan, we discovered that we share a passion for crafts. I love the detail and contrast that Jan creates in her prints. It really makes them stand out. It was an easy decision to display them at Make and now our customers love them as much as we do. “What we’d like to do is keep Jan’s work on display and exhibit the work of other local artists and crafters across the year. Not only does this enhance our café, it also helps to profile the many talented artists who live in and around Plymouth.” Jan Brewerton, who lives and works from her studio in Plymouth and exhibits in galleries throughout the country, said: “All the pieces on show at Make at 140 Vauxhall St are

inspired by knitting and sewing, subjects very close to my heart. It is lovely to have my work on show in this fabulous new venture and to know that they are being seen by other knitters and craftspeople.” Make at 140 Vauxhall St is located next to Sutton Harbour, just a few minutes from the historic Barbican in Plymouth. Visitors can see a selection of Jan’s lino prints and treat themselves to a coffee and a delicious homemade cake while they are there.

BEAUTY MATTERS

Quality of care is more than skin deep at Sandon Court Clinic Anne-Marie Davies and her team of professionals at Sandon Court Clinic have plenty to celebrate as they mark their 10th anniversary at The Millfields. With a client base approaching 3,000, a Facebook community of almost 1,000 and a long list of glowing testimonials on the website, Sandon Court Clinic has grown beyond Anne-Marie’s wildest expectations. She puts the success down to their ‘S.A.F.E’ values: safety, affordability, follow-up care and expertise. Combined with the friendly welcome, discreet location, the emphasis on honesty and trust, and the high quality treatments, it’s proved to be a winning formula. Sandon Court specialises in non-surgical aesthetics and has established a reputation as the leading skin clinic in the South West, with clients travelling from across the region for treatments. On the day the Plymouth Magazine visited Anne-Marie, she was awaiting delivery of the latest in natural, non-surgical facial and neck lifting and tightening treatment, the 3D-Skimmed. The HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) treatment utilises the body’s natural healing process to lift, tone and tighten loose skin. The team of six practitioners includes Harley Street specialist Dr Melissa Fitzgerald, who is available at Sandon Court Clinic twice a week, alternating between their Plymouth and Exeter clinics. Dr Fitzgerald also carries out many of the injectables treatments as well as Thread Lifts. Anne-Marie said: “A major Dr Melissa Fitzgerald benefit to this treatment

is that it is natural, it makes your own skin work harder to produce more collagen. It doesn’t involve surgery or injection and the improvement is gradual over two or three months, so there’s not an immediate change. “It’s also a one-off treatment rather than a course of treatments and, depending on each individual, it lasts for about two years. “We don’t introduce any new treatment until it has been tried and tested and gone through all the rigorous procedures and HIFU has been shown to be particularly effective for the troublesome jowl and neck area,” she added. The treatment can take up to two hours and costs from £250. It’s one of a number of treatments available at the clinic. Facial surface treatments include IPL laser treatment for blemishes, dermaroller to improve skin texture, microdermabrasion to enhance skin tone, and medi-facials and medical strength skin peels for skin rejuvenatation. Treatments that target changes under the skin which occur as we grow older include botox, sculptra, dermal fillers, 3D Lipo radiofrequency and genie. These reduce the visible signs of ageing. The clinic also offers 3D Lipo body transformation programmes such as tummy sculpting, body sculpting and cellulite reduction. 3D Lipo is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction and is suitable for both men and women. Anne-Marie says that for many of her clients, it’s a case of boosting selfconfidence rather than getting a new look. For some, the improvements Anne-Marie Davies have had a far-reaching

impact: “Most come in and say they want to look fresher, not younger. It could be a woman whose children have now gone off to university and she wants some ‘me’ time. “And it can change people’s lives. Some of our clients have said the increased self-confidence has transformed their lives, they’ve blossomed.” It’s not just the clients who have blossomed, as AnneMarie explained: “We started with zilch when we opened at another location in Plymouth 11 years ago. Now here we are in this spacious clinic with six treatment rooms and discreet reception areas, and with a wonderful team. We’ve had a fabulous 10 years here; it’s been an incredible journey. “And the reason we’ve grown is because of our reputation. Honesty is very important to us; if a client comes in and asks for something we feel isn’t right for them, we will tell them. The first thing we ask in an initial consultation is ‘what are your concerns?’ and we listen to them before offering options. We support them in making informed choices, we manage

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

Well-known Plymouth businessman Mike Freeman may be taking more of a back seat in his successful bathroom and kitchen business - but he's certainly not taking life easy. Mike founded Millbay-based Jobel nearly 20 years ago and with retirement beckoning he has handed over the reins to his son Dan. Mike said: "Now that I had more time on my hands I decided I wanted to give something back to the community." With a lifelong passion for motor bikes it didn't take Mike long to approach Devon Freewheelers Emergency Volunteer Service - a team of volunteer motor cycle couriers who deliver urgently needed blood, drugs, tissue, organs, breast milk and medical equipment between hospitals. Also known as Blood Bikes, the volunteers provide cover outside normal working hours between 5pm and 7am every day of the year as well as 24 hour cover at weekends and on bank holidays. Mike said: "I had always been interested in the work of Blood Bikes but previously never had the time to become involved. "With Dan overseeing the day-to-day running of Jobel I applied to Devon Freewheelers just over two years ago and was delighted when they accepted me as a volunteer. "We have to be prepared to commit about half our volunteer time to riding bikes and the other half to fund raising," said Mike. "This is a vital part of the work as it costs around ÂŁ150,000 a year to keep the service going." Mike underwent an intensive training programme and also took his advanced motor cycle test before he was allowed to join the team of 25 riders. Devon Freewheelers also has a similar number of volunteers who provide a range of other support services, including call handling, administration, fund raising and other duties. He has now been a fully fledged Blood Bike volunteer for around a year, one of a small team of half a dozen riders who cover the west of the county - a big area of Devon from

Plymouth to Okehampton and across to Exeter. Two of the riders are always on call overnight and at weekends to provide the vital medical delivery service. "I try to give as much time as I can to the Blood Bikes," said Mike, "as it is such an important community service which receives no funding from the NHS or other public body. "In fact we are able to save the NHS many thousands of pounds carrying out duties that used to be provided by the police in emergencies or by taxis in non-urgent cases," he added. As with all the Blood Bike riders, Mike has been provided with a high-powered 1200 cc BMW former police motor bike which carries the distinctive Blood Bike livery. "They're very powerful machines, but we are not allowed to break the speed limit or go through red lights when on an emergency, although we can use our blue lights to make traffic aware that we are on an urgent call." In the last few weeks Mike has also achieved the distinction of becoming a frontline 'first responder' which means he can be called out to attend serious medical emergencies, such as heart attacks and strokes. "We carry a defibrillator, oxygen and other first aid equipment which we can use to treat patients until the qualified paramedics or ambulance crews arrive." Mike underwent an intensive training course in Exeter to qualify as a first responder - and he has already put his new found skills to good use when he came across an accident while on duty for Blood Bikes. He helped two young injured motor cyclists after the accident in Manadon and stayed with them until the paramedics arrived.

Devon Freewheelers Devon Freewheelers was founded as a charity in 2009 by Daniel Lavery, who is now its chief executive. In 2005, his wife Shelly suffered an extremely difficult and traumatic delivery while pregnant with their youngest child and was rushed to hospital whilst on a visit to Northern Ireland. It was a delivery of blood by a bike volunteer that saved both of their lives and it was this that inspired Daniel to set up Devon Freewheelers. Once back home in Devon with a fit and healthy family, Daniel decided he had to take some kind of action when he discovered that Devon was one of the few counties that didn’t have a voluntary blood bike service. Four previous attempts had been made to start a similar service in Devon over the course of two decades and all had failed due to a lack of funding. So he sold his home and used the proceeds to fund and run the charity. Earlier this year he received the 'Points of Light' award from Prime Minister David Cameron in recognition of his role with Devon Freewheelers.

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

A Plymouth-based company that has provided quality training and connected thousands of apprentices with firms in the region over the past 17 years is expanding to cover more sectors of business and industry. Focus Training (SW) Ltd was set up in 1999 to serve the Professional and Leadership sector as well as the Retail, Health & Social Care, Hospitality and Service industries. The company has now changed its name to The Focus Training Group to reflect its growth into Electrical, Plumbing, Gas and Arboriculture training and apprenticeships. The Focus Training Group matches apprentices with businesses that are keen to take on and develop people looking for a longterm career. With hundreds of openings available for apprentices each year, they’re urging people looking for a rewarding career to get in touch. The four parts of the new-look group are the original Focus Training (professional trades) DCET Training (electrical), the newlyestablished Arb Academy (tree surgery and forestry), and Super Tech (plumbing and gas), which has been bought by the group. With up to 100% funding from Government schemes available, Group Recruitment and Marketing Manager Shelly Wright says there’s never been a better time to consider an apprenticeship: “They are fully-funded for 16-18 year-olds with the possibility of employer incentives and at least part-funded and in some cases fully-funded for people who are 19 and over,” she said. “That applies to mature apprentices, too, so people shouldn’t think that they’ve missed out just because they’re over 18.” Armed Forces leavers can use their points to fund a training course as well. All apprenticeship applicants undergo an interview which includes initial assessment to assess their suitability, attitude and commitment. Under the schemes, apprentices following the technical trade apprenticeships work on site for four days a week and spend one day a week at Focus Training Group’s classrooms and practical rooms at their HQ in Valley Road, Plympton. Professional apprenticeships are all delivered in the workplace.

Of the 60 staff at the group’s five bases in the South West, some 25 are tutors. All course tutors have backgrounds in the fields they are teaching in and the quality offered by the group is recognised with a ‘Good’ ranking from the education standards watchdog, Ofsted. To assist learning, classes are kept to a maximum of 15 apprentices. There are 1,000 apprentices on the group’s books at any given time, with 20 new joiners each month – and that number is likely to increase. Focus Training has a rolling intake, with new apprentices able to join each month; DCET intake is September and next March; the Arb Academy takes new apprentices three times a year; and Super Tech has two intakes a year, the next one being in September. So, how do would-be apprentices and employers get on board? Shelly explained: “They can contact us directly and tell us what they are looking for. For businesses, we can help with recruitment. For apprentices, we have a list of vacancies in our office here and on our website so that they can see what openings are currently available in the Plymouth area. Our apprenticeship vacancies are also on the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) website. “There is a massive shortage of skills in some sectors and employers are crying out for apprentices – and this is the message we want to get out there. For example, we are looking to recruit 100 electrical apprentices a year. “We are delivering the Government-funded Trailblazer electrotechnical training ahead of everyone else in the country. As of January this year, nationally, there were 85 apprentices currently going down this route – and we had all 85 of them.” Shelly added: “There are opportunities now to learn a trade that will be rewarding for years to come and a lot of learners are beginning to opt for an apprenticeship because they can see the benefits. With electricians, the apprenticeship is three-and-a-half

DERTAKE

N WE ALSO U

years. It’s very intensive and at the end of it they will have all the accredited qualifications to be classified as a Qualified Electrician.” The Focus Training Group also run skills development qualifications for firms that are looking to develop their staff, ranging from Level 2 to Level 5. Qualifications include Team Leading, Management, Business Administration, Customer Service, Retail, Sales, Hospitality, Health & Social Care and Warehousing. Funding is available, subject to eligibility. Commercial courses, including Health and Safety and First Aid are also delivered to businesses, and bespoke training programmes can be designed specifically to meet a firm’s needs. The group works closely with agencies such as Job Centre Plus, Career South West and Working Links, offering training to boost skills and employment chances for people out of work. Regular workshops include Business Administration, Retail, Hospitality and Health & Social Care. For local schools, they can offer taster days for upcoming school-leavers to try a trade to see if they like it, apprenticeship talks and general careers advice. “The flexibility as well as the quality that we offer is a big reason for our success,” said Shelly. “We are here to help businesses grow and develop a skilled workforce, and we are here to help people learn the skills to stand them in good stead for the long term.” Contact the Focus Trading Group on 01752 335207 if you’d like to find out more.

FOOD MATTERS

Everest Spice taking Nepalese and Indian cuisine to new heights Everest Spice team...Dhirendra Shrestha, Manish Gurung, Rajesh Shrestha

A new restaurant in Plymouth is already attracting return customers and rave reviews for its blend of authentic Nepalese and favourite Indian dishes, just a few months after opening its doors. Everest Spice opened earlier this year in the building in Athenaeum Street that was formerly home to the Hoe Cantonese restaurant. Ideally placed between the city centre and the Hoe – and handily near the Theatre for a pre-show meal – Everest Spice offers Plymouth’s eating out scene something completely new, specialising in traditional Nepalese cuisine while also serving a full selection of Indian dishes too. The restaurant is run by cousins Rajesh and Dhirendra Shrestha and their good friend, Manish Gurung. The three had worked in some of Plymouth’s most popular Indian eateries for many years before deciding they wanted to showcase their favourite Nepalese and Indian dishes at their own restaurant. “We were already looking for somewhere when this location became available,” said Rajesh. “We got the keys in February and worked like crazy to be open a month later. It’s a nice size for us because we want to be a friendly, family-run restaurant, not a huge place. This is the atmosphere we want.” Bhuteko Prawns Flanked either

side by the two giants of India and China, Nepal has its own distinct cultural and culinary identity. Famed for the Himalayan range and Mount Everest and as the birthplace of Buddha, when it comes to flavours, Nepal offers something different to those associated with its neighbours. “The high altitude gives Nepalese spices and herbs a unique taste,” explains head chef Manish. “And it’s not just the spices in themselves that are different, it’s also how we use them and how we blend them. We do have some very spicy dishes but we also have dishes where the spices are more subtle than Indian spices.” And, because of the diversity within the regions in Nepal, the cuisine changes as you travel around the country, which adds to the taste mix. Manish, the son of a former Gurkha in the British Army, comes from Pokhara and hails from the Gurung tribe. Rajesh and Dhirendra, from the capital Kathmandu, are from the Newar tribe: “In that sense there isn’t really one Nepalese cuisine because it varies depending on where you live and what your heritage is,” said Rajesh. “But there is a definite difference, compared to Indian herbs and spices. You need to try it really, to understand.” So, in the interests of accuracy, your Plymouth Magazine writer did just that with a tasting session, starting with what is probably Nepal’s most

FOOD MATTERS

Momo...Everest Spice speciality

famous dish, Momo. “Everyone in Nepal knows how to make these,” said Rajesh. “Families and friends have Momo nights where they eat Momos all evening, it’s like a Momo party!” Anyone who has visited Nepal will be familiar with these steamed dumplings, which, in this case, were filled with lamb and spices and served with Nepali dipping chutney – in Nepal, the meat tends to be water buffalo. Momo is available as a starter or a main and you must try it, the flavours are amazing. A vegetarian option is available. Next up was another authentic dish which Sherpas traditionally eat to insulate them from the mountain chill, Sherpa (or Sykpa) soup. Hearty, yet exquisitely-spiced, this was cooked using lamb and was quite spicy but fresh at the same time, with coriander predominant. Perhaps the dish that has received the most complimentary comments is the Honey Hunter Chicken. The sauce is characterised by a mild yet extremely tasty combination of spices. Another delicately spiced dish that was offered for tasting was Everest King Prawn, which is made using coconut milk. For those who like lots of heat, try Nepoli Choila (made using ginger, garlic, spring onion and green chilli) for starters and Sherpa Khasi (cooked with authentic Nepalese herbs, spring onion, pepper and green chilli) as a main. Other authentic dishes are the medium Aduwa, which features ginger quite heavily, and the hot Pudina, made with fresh mint, green chilli, curry leaves and Nepalese spices. Most of the sauces can be used with lamb, chicken, prawn or vegetables – just ask for your preference. Alternatively, if you’d rather tuck into your favourite Indian curry then there are plenty of options on the menu, including Tandoori, Balti, Vindaloo, Tikka Masala, Korma, Moglai, Passanda and Jalfrezi. There is also a selection of set menus for two and four people. Comedy night with plenty of ginger added A loaded bill of comedy in association with Gingers: The Gathering is being presented by Plymouth Comedy Club in August.

no nonsense act that will leave you begging for more. In the interest of balance Plymouth Comedy Club decided to allow a token non-redhead onto the bill. As the call went out it was answered by no less a comedy powerhouse than the mighty Gerry K, declaring himself to be as far from being ginger as genetically possible. He may well have a point. This headliner calibre comedic tour de force is in huge demand all around the globe, leaving audiences breathless with laughter wherever he goes. A truly superb act that overflows with punchy routines with topics that range from Angela Barnes the mundane to the insane. He’s also quick to point out that he loves redheads. Former City Life Comedian Of The Year Andy Watson rounds out this line up, having lifted Andy Watson and (below) Gerry K the comedy trophy previously won by the likes of Peter Kay, Caroline Aherne, John Bishop and Jason Manford. Andy, a thoroughbred ginger, is a ball of pure energy on stage punctuating his routines and observations with explosions of pure dynamism. Infectious and immensely entertaining, Andy will kick the night off in style. Resident MC Chris Brooker, also a full on redhead, will be hosting the night’s proceedings after a day of flitting from shade to shade and essentially sheep dipping himself in Factor 50. Plymouth’s finest comedy club is sure to provide a night of laughter that will make the Gathering just that little bit funnier.

The show on Saturday August 6 at Plymouth Athenaeum features Angela Barnes, Gerry K and Andy Watson with resident MC Chris Brooker. On the weekend of August 5 redheads, their friends, families and fans will gather from all corners of the nation and beyond for Gingers: The Gathering – a wild celebration of those possessing the ginger gene, rendering them fair of flesh and fiery of follicle. Expect there to be a noticeable sunblock shortage in Plymouth. There’s a fantastic line up at Plymouth Comedy Club as part of the festivities. A specially selected bill of comedians that features redheads from across the circuit, both genetically ginger and those who have chosen to cross the wasteland from more mundane hues of hair. Headline act Angela Barnes is one of the most celebrated comedians to rise from the ranks in recent times. Ever since snagging the title of BBC New Comedian of the Year in 2011 this riotous redhead has gone from strength to strength. Appearances on the likes of Mock The Week, Russell Howard’s Good News and Stand Up For The Week put her squarely in the public eye. Her lauded comedy series ‘You Can’t Take It With You’ kept her there. A

Vicki’s walking tall - thanks to Foot Solutions Plymouth mother of two Vicki Vokes keeps in shape by going to the gym and exercising on a daily basis - but a few months ago she could barely walk. Just before Christmas last year 39-year-old Vicki started to experience severe pain in her feet. “It came on really suddenly and I found it almost impossible to walk. “As a busy mum with two little boys I had to take pain killers several times a day just to be able cope with everyday life,” said Vicki, who lives in Stoke. “If I did walk any distance I would have to spend the rest of the day with my feet up to help the pain to go away.” Vicki said that during her career in sales and marketing she had always worn high heels, platforms or stilettos. “As soon as I became pregnant with my first son about five years ago I started to wear flat shoes, which provided little or no support,” said Vicki, “and I think it was this that caused the problem.”

Then her brother-in-law suggested that she probably had a condition called plantar fasciitis, a disorder which results in pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot. It affects the plantar fascia, a ligament that connects the heel bone to the toes, and millions of people suffer from the ailment. Vicki’s brother-in-law recommended a visit to Foot Solutions in Royal Parade and in January this year she attended an appointment in the store. “The staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and carried out a full examination of my feet, which confirmed I did have plantar fasciitis,” said Vicki. After the assessment Vicki was supplied with customised arch supports - and within days of them arriving she was able to walk without any pain at all. “The relief was incredible. The supports have been the key to me being able to go to the gym several times a week as well as doing bootcamp, boxercise and other high

intensity workouts,” said Vicki. “I cannot recommend Foot Solutions highly enough - they have given me my life back.” For an appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the City Centre.

Barbican Theatre’s production of Romeo & Juliet will be a beautiful, heart rending, highly visual and condensed version of Shakespeare’s classic romance, perfect for the whole family (suitable for children aged 8+). See it and you’ll fall in love forever! Mark Laville, director of Romeo & Juliet talked about his thought processes behind choosing the tragic love story for the 2016 production, “We chose Romeo & Juliet because it is a timeless tale of love, rebellion and tragedy. After the success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year we know Romeo & Juliet can be an exceptional experience when produced specifically for the outdoors at Royal William Yard, with a performance the whole family will adore.” Mark also explained about Barbican Theatre’s vision to make high quality theatre productions as accessible to as many people as possible, “The whole point of producing Photos: Gemma Ward Shakespeare outdoors is to showcase Photography and animate the City’s extraordinary spaces in the summer. We want to develop the ‘Made in Plymouth’ brand with productions of the highest quality using the resources on our doorstep. It’s also about offering cultural activity to the Plymouth public and visitors to the city, which is accessible, enjoyable and affordable. It’s designed not just for regular theatregoers or ‘Shakespeare buffs’, but more importantly for people who want to come to an extraordinary event in an extraordinary place in Britain’s Ocean City”. Last year’s summer production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, received some incredible audience reviews; “We were held spellbound as the story unfolded through a cast which was in top form, brimming with wit and ingenuity in their interpretation. The breathless choreographed climax brought the audience to its feet and a standing ovation was fully deserved.” “… I cannot imagine ever seeing a more enjoyable, intimate and engaging performance as this one. I would highly recommend anyone who gets the chance of watching any other outdoor plays at Residence One to grasp it with both hands.” The final cast of eight includes a mixture of dynamism, long time experience and inspirational new comers, including Mark Jardine who has recently completed an international tour of Mamma Mia, Kate Hunter who performed lead roles with the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival in 2015 and Nix Rosewarne who was a key member of Kneehigh International Theatre and is an experienced professional specialising in site-based performance throughout the UK and Europe. The title roles will be filled by Giorgio Kays and Holly Hewat. Explaining his casting choices Mark Laville detailed the difficult decisions he had to make, “More than 40 actors auditioned for professional roles in

you place your property on the market. Children often affect the decision. On one side you might delay putting that for sale board in your front garden so you can move in the summer school holidays, but on the other side, you might want to move sooner to be in the catchment area of a preferred school, in plenty of time for the next academic year? There are times of the year when it’s better to sell, and times when waiting a little longer can pay off in the long run. In a nutshell, I would say this is the way of the seasons .. WHEN THE MARKET? Spring: Customarily there are more house-buyers as the Daffodils show themselves Summer: Sellers may miss out on house-buyers being on

So, whilst there are better months to achieve a quicker sale, the only piece of advice I can give to every home owner and landlord in Plymouth, is do the right thing for yourself, do your homework and buy (and sell) with both your head as well as your heart For more thoughts on the Plymouth Property Market – visit www.plymouthpropertynews. wordpress.com

WHAT’S ON

Celebrating 13 years of artistic talent It is thirteen years since the Drawn to the Valley group first got together as a way for artists local to the River Tamar to keep in touch and exhibit their work. Much of their inspiration comes from their passion for the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are now over 130 members covering a host of creative skills, and a wide geographical area, and the group’s continued success is something to celebrate. The Drawn to the Valley annual Summer Exhibition in Tavistock Town Hall from July 27 to 31 is a fantastic opportunity to see a wide selection of these artists’ work under one roof, and is a great way to get a flavour of more to come as this event is followed by Open Studios from August 27 to September 4. Paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, photography, glass, wood and sculpture all form part of this eclectic exhibition. All work is for sale and will include cards and unmounted work. The artists range from those with a great deal of experience to those who are just starting out. Prices reflect this mix and there will be plenty of bargains. The private view, on July 26 from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, is a

wonderfully vibrant occasion which offers the opportunity to meet many of the artists and to see their work displayed. For the artists themselves it is an important event that brings them together both socially and professionally. It is both exciting and daunting for them to see their work in a public show. Open Studios August 27 to September 4 Open Studios is a rare treat – a chance to visit artists in their own work space. This event is an essential part of the Tamar valley’s creative calendar. Open Studios provides a chance to see and discuss much of the best established and emerging art in the region, and provides an ideal opportunity to buy original artwork directly from the artists themselves. The Summer Exhibition is open 10.30 am to 5.30 pm daily from Wednesday July 27 to Saturday July 30; 10.30 am to 3.00 pm on Sunday 31st July. Brochures for Open Studios, detailing participating artists and locations are available from tourist information offices, libraries, hotels, art centres, garden centres, and other places of interest from July. Brochures will also be available as a pdf on the Drawn to the Valley website at www.drawntothevalley.co.uk Or email Sarah-Jane Lincoln on admin@drawntothevalley. co.uk for further information.

WHAT’S ON

It’s a wrap as city museum prepares for shutdown

Paul Brookes, programme director fo the new Plymouth History Centre

With plans for the city’s new History Centre now approved, the countdown to the closure of the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is well under way.

An estimated one million artefacts of all shapes and sizes will be carefully packed by museum staff and dozens of volunteers over the coming weeks ahead of the closure of the building in early September.

The mammoth task is expected to take until the end of the year so that work on the new History Centre can begin in earnest in early 2017.

The museum’s collections will be transported to a secure, environmentally controlled storage facility where they will stay for more than three years.

The location of the storage facility will remain a wellkept secret as the museum collections - particularly the art collection - are worth many millions of pounds.

Paul Brookes, programme director for the History Centre, said: “Decanting the museum is an extremely complex and challenging task.

“We have everything from microscopic items from the natural history collection, through to huge works of art and sculptures. Within this we have around 4,000 marine specimens alone which are preserved in pickle jars. “Most people probably don’t realise that only a small percentage - roughly five per cent - of the museum’s collections are actually on display at any one time.”

A Decant Officer, who oversaw a similar project at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, and a Decant Curator have been recruited to head up this important element of the project.

The task of preparing for the closure of the museum is featured in a current exhibition called ‘It’s A Wrap’ which

40\

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

closes on September 3.

Volunteers have been trained to help with the huge task and there will be special packing days for adults and families during August.

Even though the museum will be closed for more than three years, there are extensive plans for ‘Museum on Tour’ activities.

These include:
• Partnership exhibitions with Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University and other offsite venues. ‘Searching for Genius’ will open at Peninsula Arts on September 24 and will be on display until November 19.
 • A public art commission in partnership with Plymouth Arts Centre. ‘Here is Where We Came From’ by Holly Davey is a two-part project. The first part can currently be viewed on the Museum balcony. Once the building has closed the second larger part will go on display on the entrance steps from September 24 until late October
 • Lunchtime lectures on selected Tuesdays at the Plymouth Athenaeum
• Bite Size talks on selected Wednesdays at venues across the city
 • Family events and activities at Smeaton’s Tower, the Mayflower Museum, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, Dartmoor Zoo, Central Park and Ernesettle Creek

The museum is also loaning some of its collections to other venues, such as Penlee House in Penzance and Dartmoor National Park’s Visitor Centre in Princetown. Collection items can also be seen at Buckland Abbey.

There will also be a programme of educational projects in schools and colleges in Plymouth and other parts of Devon.

Paul said that the total cost of the project is estimated to be £34m which will be funded from a combination of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Arts

Council (ACE) along with the City Council and many other smaller funders. Applications for £15.8m have been made to HLF and £4.2m to ACE whilst the council has committed more that £8m.

The History Centre team received a boost in July when it was confirmed that the Wolfson Foundation had made a £128,000 grant towards the project. And there are other smaller funders that have been confirmed. However there is still around £3.5 million to be raised, and it is expected that this will be secured from grants and private sector donations.

Paul said that it was anticipated that construction of the History Centre will be completed by April 2019 followed by a major fit out of new exhibitions. The attraction will be officially opened in the Spring of 2020, ahead of the Mayflower 400 celebrations.

“Once the building is handed over to us in April 2019, the creation of the new cutting-edge galleries, high profile exhibitions and interactive displays will take place.”

He said that in addition to the museum’s existing collections, the History Centre will also house collections from the South West Film and Television Archive, the South West Image Bank, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, the Local Studies and Reference collection from the Library and loans from the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre.

“We will create a unique cultural attraction that highlights Plymouth and its place in the world,” he added. www.cornerstonevision.com

Eight of the eleven bungalows on the site have been sold or are sold subject to contract – an outcome that has exceeded all expectations. Graham Clark, planning director of Sunnybanks Homes said: “This is some achievement against the backdrop of a significant fall in the number of transactions in the Plymouth area in this price bracket, year on year. "It underlines the high quality of a development that clearly meets all the requirements of certain, more discerning buyers and which is located in one of the best residential areas in the city.” While equally delighted, Mansbridge Balment managing director Darren Lawson said he was not surprised by the sales performance at what is the only ‘new build’ scheme of wholly four bedroom bungalows in the South West. “It shows the very powerful foothold Mansbridge Balment has in the PL6 post code area of Plymouth, thanks in no small measure to the team at our North Plymouth office who are

driving the sales success at this excellent development.” “But sales people are only as good as the product they are selling and Sunnybanks Homes deserve the plaudits too for identifying demand for what is a portfolio of exceptional properties offering the highest levels of specification, in a perfect location.” With a shortage of new build bungalows on the market, Caradon Close, which is situated off Powisland Drive in Plymouth, is aimed at owners of larger properties looking to downsize, but who still want plenty of space. Sunnybanks Homes’ development of four detached bungalows in nearby Woolwell Drive proved highly popular and the developers were certain Caradon Close would be equally sought after. Featuring either brick or natural stonework exteriors, ten of the bungalows have an internal floor space of almost 2,000 square feet including the double garage and four double bedrooms, with en-suite shower rooms in the master and guest bedrooms. Two different designs are available on the site, the ‘Delgany’ and the ‘Powisland’ and prices are from £492,000.

See the light with a stunning Realistic conservatory

Ask any property expert for a sure-fire way of adding both value and wow factor to your home, and a quality conservatory will be either top of their list or a very close second. And, according to Ryan Barrett of Realistic Conservatories & Double Glazing, more and more people are taking that advice and investing in a stunning new conservatory for their home. Ryan, who runs the family business from a showroom at the Tamar View Nurseries retail park near Saltash, says they’re busier than ever supplying and fitting conservatories and glazed extensions for customers across the South West. “We’ve got fittings booked up for weeks,” said Ryan. “It’s not just that people are looking to add extra space to their homes, they’re looking to experience the outside, inside. They want their living area to be light and airy and with so many exciting new products on the market, it’s a great time to be doing it.” Ryan and his wife Jen established Realistic in 2009 and the firm recently became even more of a family affair, with daughter Jasmine joining as an apprentice. The company has grown rapidly in the past seven years, with the showroom doubling in size from five fully constructed conservatories on site to 10, and more staff being taken on to manage the demand. “Most of our customers come through referrals and recommendations,” said Ryan. “Our reputation is for delivering quality and because we only use our own employed, qualified staff and fitters, we can guarantee that quality. Our Part P electricians carry out the electrical work and we only use Gas Safe plumbers. “Investing in a new conservatory, orangery or extension is a big step for people to take and they need to know they can trust the company doing the work,” he added. “We provide an all-in service that meets the highest standards they have every right to expect. “We liaise with the planning authorities and the utility firms so that all work adheres to regulations and it

44\

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

means the customer doesn’t have to worry about any of that. “Basically, after choosing their conservatory, customers can sit back and let us do the rest.” Further peace of mind comes through Realistic being the only approved installer of market leaders Ultraframe in Devon and Cornwall: “To have their accreditation, we have to meet their required high standards,” explained Ryan, “and that applies from the design and planning stage right through to completion and after care.” That after-sales service includes a 10-year guarantee, a further guarantee from Glass and Glazing Federation Insurance, and an Ultraframe genuine authenticity certificate. Ryan, who worked in the industry before setting up Realistic, says that technology has advanced so rapidly that conservatories now don’t just look great, but they’re energy efficient too. Insulation and modern materials such as ‘super glass’ ensures the conservatory is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. “Solar reflection roofs and insulated panels have revolutionised conservatories in recent years,” he said. “Planitherm One glass has the best thermal efficiency and we fit Pilkington glazing that keeps the conservatory cool. “There is such a wide choice now in terms of materials and designs that customers can get pretty much what they want, whether it’s a glazed roof or a solid roof, or an aluminium roof that looks like zinc iron. The technology of roof glazing is even self-cleaning. “The extension need not even be a conservatory either; it could add attractive new space to a kitchen, for example. A lot of people are also choosing an orangery, which is more of a traditional build that blends with the existing home,” added Ryan. Customers can even help to shape their bespoke conservatory, thanks to Realistic’s computer-aided 3-D design programme. As well as Ultraframe, Realistic’s product range also includes Loggia, UltraSky, RealRoof and LivinRoof. The firm also offers a full range of supply and fit services for doors, windows,

Short cuts on boiler rep

Steve Short

Gas boilers account for more than half of what homeowners spend in a year on energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference - that's the message from Steve Short of Plymouth-based A Boiler 4 U. Steve said: "Most modern boilers are guaranteed for 10 years, but there are literally thousands of older boilers out there which are inefficient and probably coming to the end of their useful life. "In recent years there have been lots of schemes appearing to offer boilers replaced for free, particularly the Government's ECO scheme, or grants towards a new boiler. However, there are strict criteria involved and many homeowners - particularly pensioners - can find it all very confusing. "I have come across quite a number of elderly homeowners whose boilers have broken down and they simply can't afford to replace them. They may not qualify for a free boiler replacement and that leaves them in a pretty desperate situation." He said that at A Boiler 4 U they are committed to bringing the cost of a new boiler down by offering great value for money. "We offer £400 scrappage on the old boiler and free 10 year parts and labour guarantee on the new appliance," said Steve. "Choosing a new boiler to provide the most energy and cost-efficient solution to heating and hot-water needs can be a daunting affair, which is why we offer a free assessment to help homeowners choose the best solution for their particular needs.

46\

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

"In today’s climate of rocketing energy prices, homeowners need a solution that will not only provide them with the level of heat and hot water that will meet their current and future needs, but also one that will be more cost-effective than their current heating system. "New boilers can be up to 30% more cost effective than their older counterparts, so while there may be a small upfront investment, the savings on your heating and hot water bills could be significant, allowing you to recoup any outlay for a new boiler over a few years in running-cost savings. "Choosing a boiler from our range also gives you enormous peace of mind, with some of the most comprehensive and respected warranties in the industry." Steve's family run company supply and install high efficiency condensing boilers from leading manufacturers such as Vaillaint, Baxi and Worcester and also offer a price match guarantee. "We are Gas Safe registered and our installation team have many years of experience in the industry. "Homeowners who have one of our boilers fitted start saving money each time they turn their tap on or switch on the central heating," he added. In addition to supplying and installing new boilers Steve's company also carry out boiler repairs and routine servicing as well as complete central heating installations.

KITCHEN MATTERS

Fabulous new kitchen is just what the doctor ordered! A Plymouth couple who both work at Derriford Hospital have praised the excellent treatment they received when they decided to have a new kitchen.

Paediatric consultant Myooren Wimalendra and his wife Emily, who is a paediatric nurse, moved into their detached Glenholt home at the end of 2013. Emily said: “We were not particularly happy with the layout of the kitchen. There was a lot of wasted space and a peninsula breakfast bar which really didn’t work well.” The couple visited two sets of neighbours who had recently had new kitchens installed in their search for a company to carry out the work. Myooren said: “They were both beautiful kitchens and we contacted both of the companies involved to talk through what we wanted. “It was KF Kitchens who impressed us enormously. Not only did they come up with some really excellent ideas, but were also able to give us a pretty precise guideline estimate of what the cost would be. “The other company were unwilling to give us an estimate as they said it depended on the final specification.” The couple spent several sessions with Nathan and Derinda Damarell at the spacious KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill selecting the style of their new kitchen as well as choosing the appliances.

48\

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

“Nathan was brilliant,” said Emily. “He came up with some really positive design suggestions for our new kitchen which really took our breath away. “It was also lovely to sit down with Derinda and discuss the colour schemes and finishes available and then see them presented as 3D impressions through their CAD software. “Derinda was really helpful and between us we came up with a really stunning colour scheme. Nathan also designed the new kitchen to make the most of all the space - including, to our delight, an island with built in NEFF induction hob and extractor hood.” The couple chose a Cashmire grey gloss finish for the majority of cupboards, doors and kitchen units, along with Avola Grey textured wood finish for a number of drawers and doors. A trio of eye-level NEFF ovens feature along the length of one wall, while another wall houses a built in Miele fridge, Smeg freezer and Artline pull-out larder. The NEFF ovens, all featuring slide and hide doors, include a combination steam oven and two full size ovens featuring Circotherm technology. The NEFF appliances also include a fully-integrated built in dishwasher which has a nifty timelight device which projects the time left to finish the programme onto the floor. Myooren also chose a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water as part of a granite double-sink arrangement.

KITCHEN MATTERS

Myooren and Emily with daughter Asha

Blanco Stellar Silestone quartz worktops installed by Mayflower Stone are featured throughout. New low energy lighting, a designer radiator in Anthracite grey, plinth heater and wood effect Karndean flooring completed the stunning new kitchen. Myooren said: “We couldn’t be happier with our wonderful new kitchen. The way the whole project was handled was exemplary from start to finish. They advised us it would take three weeks to complete the installation - and Emily with the Artline pull-out larder they were spot on. “The team of skilled tradesmen - particularly their fitter Kevin - liaised closely with each other and with us throughout ensuring that there were no delays.” Emily added: “What could have been a very stressful time particularly with our two young daughters - turned out to be a very pleasant experience. We are thrilled with KF Kitchens and can’t thank them enough.”

PROPERTY MATTERS

It’s ‘girls to the rescue’ for homeowners and buyers Laura Helen, a young mother of two and successful property entrepreneur has teamed up with experienced Plymouth businesswoman Barbara Mary Wray to use their combined skills and experience to help people who want to either get off or onto the property ladder. It was a chance meeting at the Plymouth Investment Group monthly network meeting that this new joint venture business between the two visionary investors was formed. Both ladies knew from experience that, for young people getting onto the property ladder was becoming more and more difficult, so the girls decided to do something about it for the people of Plymouth. Laura, who grew up in Plymouth said: "I saw the distress of young couples, especially in Devon and Cornwall and particularly in the villages where there was simply no chance to buy a home in the communities where they grew up." Laura and husband David used to be Business Angels going into failing businesses, assessing the problems and creatively finding solutions, turning failing concerns into thriving businesses. However, as David explained: "The money was great, but we worked so hard we never saw each other. We started to look for something else that would give us a recurring income - without us having to work so many hours. "We also heard that the acronym for JOB was Just Over Broke, and decided that it was time to work smarter not harder. Property investing seemed the ideal vehicle, and we used the same solution focused thinking for our

50\

The Plymouth Magazine August 2016

property investing journey." They soon found that there were many people who, despite the strong demand for property, simply could not manage to sell their home. "It was a real light bulb moment", said Laura. "If we could buy the houses that people couldn’t sell and sell them to the people who couldn’t buy, then we were solving problems and helping people at the same time." The concept has already seen the couple acquire 36 houses so far this year, the aim is for 100 by the end of December. The couple have a goal to find other entrepreneurs who share their vision and extend the concept across the UK. The chance meeting with a kindred spirit in Laura’s home town of Plymouth seemed like fate and the launch of the Plymouth venture began with Barbara. Barbara has had a succession of successful businesses in both the UK and in Cyprus, where she started up a restaurant from scratch and within 2 years the restaurant was selected to be featured in the prestigious 'Top 10 Guide to Cyprus.' She also founded the first ever Women’s Business network group with annual awards for Cyprus businesswomen and orchestrated the first ever UKTI backed trade mission of businesswomen from the UK representing six Chambers of Trade from the North West. "Sadly, Cyprus joining the EU was a disaster for Cyprus businesses", said Barbara. "So, like many other people I sold up and came back to the UK and chose Plymouth for a new beginning. "For me, this venture is not so much about an income,

PROPERTY MATTERS it’s more about helping others, making a difference and possibly creating a legacy. It seemed like destiny to meet Laura and to find that we share the same philosophy and vision." Both ladies have had their share of ups and downs in their lives and so can empathize with others who are struggling. Barbara had a Barbara Mary Wray serious house fire which destroyed her home and business and where she lost many pets. Laura and David went to the rescue of someone they heard of who was seriously distressed, getting themselves over £40,000 in debt in the process, borrowing from family and friends, with no way of knowing how they would ever be able to repay the money. As Barbara commented: "We found that we have the same mindset... where others might say - it can’t be done, we say how can we do it?" For Laura and her family that mentality and her expertise, coupled with her warmth and huge heart has not only allowed the family to totally pay off all the debt in a few years, but also their lives having been enriched by the experience. They were determined to find a way to carry on helping others. As Barbara said: “We love creatively solving property problems and helping people to move on with their lives. We make the nightmares go away and we make dreams come true.”

TRAVEL MATTERS

Brexit and what it means to your holiday plans

Brexit could lead to higher air fares

The last few weeks have seen so many developments in UK and European politics that it would be impossible for me to summarise the impacts on our travel industry in just a few paragraphs of this article. Suffice to say that I think the result of the UK referendum on our future with the EU was as much of a surprise to me as it was to many of you. The Brexit vote has undoubtedly created a great deal of uncertainty worldwide and it seems that the travel industry, like other markets, will not escape suffering a period of instability as a result. In this month’s article I felt it would be appropriate to address some of the questions that have already been raised concerning how Brexit will affect Britons travelling abroad. I am obviously only able to assess and answer based on the situation as it is today and I should stress that the situation will obviously remain very fluid as our government negotiates the terms of our exit. Travel advice on certain issues may therefore change in the future. I hope these questions and answers may allay some of your concerns;

How will Brexit affect my holiday? Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years time, there will no changes to holiday arrangements. Travellers are as free to move between the UK and the EU as they were before the vote, European Health Insurance cards remain valid and regulations such as Air Passenger Rights remain in place. I’m going to Europe this summer, is my passport still valid? Yes. Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years time, there will no changes to passports. I’ve booked a holiday for next year, do I need to do anything? No. Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years time, there will no changes to holiday arrangements. Do I need to get a new passport? No. Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years’ time, there will no change to passport arrangements. Which queue will I go into at the airport, EU Expert passports or all others? The same queue as you did before the vote. Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years time, there will no change.

Anthony Goord

Do I need a visa to go to Spain? No. Until the UK officially leaves the EU, not sooner than two years time, there will no change to passport arrangements. What about my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)? You can still use your EHIC card abroad. There will be no immediate changes to using your EHIC card abroad. Arrangements between the UK and other EU countries will have to be reached once the UK officially leaves the EU. Can I still get compensation if my flight is delayed or cancelled? Yes. There will be no immediate changes to claiming compensation if your flight is delayed or cancelled. The UK Government will need to implement a new law on compensation for flight delays and compensation after we leave the EU. What about duty free? Can I still bring goods home? You can still bring home unlimited goods until we officially leave the EU. The free movement of goods will be part of a negotiated settlement with the EU. What about using my mobile phone abroad? Will roaming charges increase? There will be no immediate changes to using your phone abroad, and there won’t be an immediate impact on charges. The UK Government will need to implement a new law on roaming charges after we leave the EU, otherwise the service providers will be free to set roaming charges. Can I still take money out from cash points abroad? Yes, you can continue to take out cash, as normal. Will it be more expensive to go on holiday abroad? Not necessarily. If you are travelling abroad and you have already paid for all of your travel arrangements, as part of a package holiday for example, then you will be protected to a large degree from a drop in the value of the pound. However, your spending power while abroad will be impacted in the event of a weaker pound, making it more expensive to buy things like meals and drinks. What does this mean for the price of my holiday abroad? If you are travelling abroad and you have already paid for all of your travel arrangements, as part of a package holiday for example, then you will be protected to a large degree from a drop in the value of the pound. People paying for overseas accommodation in other currencies (e.g.: in Euros or dollars) can expect to pay more in the event of a weaker pound. Will the cost of flights increase? A weaker pound may impact the cost of flights in the short term, in the longer term the UK Government will seek to negotiate full access to the EU’s common aviation market, which has delivered the open skies arrangements we have today. My travel company has asked me to pay more for my holiday due to the currency fluctuations. Is that OK? Check the terms and conditions of the organiser that you’ve booked with. If you’ve booked a package holiday this is covered by certain rules: the maximum surcharge by law is up to 10% of the original cost of the holiday. If you haven’t booked a package, you should check the terms and conditions of your travel arrangements. Happy Holidays!

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Ideas to bring more life into city centre unveiled Urban living could return to Plymouth city centre as part of a move to introduce people and impart a fresh feel into the heart of the city. More families, couples, as well as singletons could live in new apartments and affordable houses with easy access to cafes, bars and shops through exciting redevelopment schemes designed to bring more life to the city centre. Ideas have been put forward as part of a City Centre Masterplan by urban designers LDA who have been commissioned by the council to carry out more detailed work as part of the Plymouth Plan. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader of the city council and cabinet member for strategic housing, transport and planning said: “The city centre is in one of three key growth areas in the Plymouth Plan and this masterplan looks at a number of key opportunities which could change the feel of the city centre and make it more vibrant, especially at night.” The ideas have been put together following discussion between LDA, the council as a key landlord as well as other stakeholders in the city centre, including the City Centre Company and retailers. Opportunities include: Colin Campbell Court A mixed-use development is currently proposed and includes new homes, retail and business units. New car parking would be provided as well as attractive new landscaped public open space.

Plymouth Railway Station Transform the welcome by rail to the city with a significant redesign and better pedestrian links to Armada Way. The multi-storey car park would be knocked down to pave the way for a new public space, framed by shops and office space. Escalators will take pedestrians from station level to the top of Armada Way and a new multi-storey car park built to modern standards, with better access as well as improved taxi facilities. Armada Way Restoring the original vision of this spectacular example of post war public space planning by decluttering it to recapture the scale and views from the railway station to the waterfront. Retail Scheme Identify locations for new development to meet modern retail needs, including Cornwall Street East and South, New George Street West and the Royal Parade East and West. Office Scheme Create an office cluster just north of the main shopping area close to the railway station and the university. It would make an ideal spot for graduate start-ups and other smallscale ventures as well as larger offices for bigger enterprise and public organisations.

GARDENING MATTERS

Slugging it out!

Well what a summer it’s been! Talk about the washout. It seems like the only things doing well in this weather are the slugs and the snails. With the combination of the mild winter and spring and the favourable conditions they have experienced this summer, their population numbers have exploded. They have been out in their droves and they have been decimating our plants and our crops. It’s so disheartening when we work hard to get our gardens looking good and wake up in the morning to find that it’s all been eaten and destroyed. It feels like a waste of time, effort and not to mention money, but fear not, there are measures and steps we can take to defeat them and get our gardens back. The simplest step to take is to water your plants in the morning, rather than in the evening. Slugs and snails are nocturnal, and prefer damp, humid conditions, so by watering your plants in the evening, you are effectively providing slugs and snails with the perfect environment to live in complete with an all you can eat buffet! By watering in the morning, slugs and snails are less active, so are less likely to be out and about. It also allows your plants to get a decent drink before the midday sun hits and allows them to become drier around their feet by the evening, providing unfavourable conditions for slugs and snails, forcing then to seek preferable conditions elsewhere. Slugs and snails have soft, moist bellies and hate crawling across sharp, dry materials, so mulch your beds, border and pots with horticultural grit. The small stones that form horticultural grit have sharp edges and when laid around the base of your plants, acts as a physical barrier against slugs and snails. It also allows water to drain through it easily so that the roots can remain moist and at the same time, allows the surface of the grit to stay dry and unhospitable for slugs and snails. Plant aromatic plants such as rosemary, parsley, thyme and lavender to deter snails

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre and slugs. Slugs have a keen sense of smell and dislike the scent of strong aromatic plants. Planting them amongst your vulnerable or cherished plants will help to keep away from them and will prevent them from being munched. To protect plants in pots, you can used self-adhesive copper tape. Simply wrap this around the rim of your pots. This creates a small electrical discharge which is too small to be noticeable to humans, but is strong enough to cause discomfort to slugs and snails and prevents them from crossing the tape. It is an effective physical barrier and deterrent to slugs and snails. The most effective method of combating slugs and snails is by using a slug and snail killer and the most popular treatment is blue slug pellets. There are a lot of people who are wary of using the slug pellets because it is effectively a poison that you are putting down and they are concerned about using it around children and pets. A brand called Sluggo Slug and Snail Killer is certified as suitable for organic gardening and safe to use around children and pets as long its used as directed. Other concerns about using slug pellets are about environmental impacts that they may have. If frogs, birds and hedgehogs eat poisoned slugs, there is concern that they in turn would get poisoned, but the Sluggo pellets are made from a chemical called ferric phosphate, which when consumed by slugs and snails, causes them to bury into the soil to die, away from anything that can eat them. They then decompose, leaving no trace whilst providing feed for your plants. They contain an attractant which the slugs will be more drawn to and will be lured away from your plants. Whilst individually these steps do help in reducing the damage caused by slugs and snails, they will provide even better

protection if you can do several of them. The more steps you take to protect your garden against slug and snail attacks, they will be more effective. Another great way of having a garden full of beautiful plants without fear of them getting eaten by slugs and snails is to grow plants that are more resistant to being eaten by them. Generally slugs and snails tend to avoid plants that are poisonous, have thick, tough leaves, have extremely thorny or prickly stems and leaves and also plants that have hairy stems or leaves. Slug resistant bedding plants include New Guinea impatiens, Busy Lizzies, Begonias, Lantana, Antirrinhums (snapdragons), Osteospermums and bedding Fuchsias. Slug resistant perennials include Penstemons, Digitalis (Foxgloves), Phygelius, Agapanthus, Astilbes, Euphorbia, Scabious, Salvia Hot Lips and Dianthus. Slug resistant shrubs include Hebes, Pieris, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Hardy Fuchsias, Acers, Spireas and Buddlejas. Slug resistant ground covering plants include Ajuga, Vinca, Campanula, Sedum, Heathers and Armeria. Grow a mixture of any of these and you’ll have a beautiful, low maintenance, slug free garden!
