Well, that was the year that was!
Well, what a year that was! Who would have predicted that there would have been so much political upheaval in 2016. Brexit has become part of everyday language and across the pond we wait with some trepidation for the new President of the United States to be inaugurated. It is difficult to predict what all this will mean for Plymouth in the long term, but by my reckoning Mr Trump could be stood on the Mayflower Steps in 2020 as the serving President of the USA as part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations. What a thought that is! At home the local elections in 2016 led to a change of political power in the City Council with a wide range of new measures introduced to try and balance the city’s books. Some of those decisions - such as fortnightly bin collections - have not been universally welcomed. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens in the next round of City Council elections in May 2017. While all this has been going on over the last year, there have been some significant signs of positive progress in the city. The announcement in December of the £50 million plans for a five star hotel and luxury apartment block on the site of the former Quality Hotel on the Hoe is really welcome news for the city. Meanwhile work has continued apace on the huge Beckley Court which now dominates the Plymouth skyline at 22-storeys high. With work due to start imminently on the £42 million Drake Circus leisure complex on the site of the old Bretonside bus station, the city centre is certainly going through a significant period of positive change. And we still have redevelopment of the former Derrys department store and Civic Centre to come! There’ll be no shortage of big stories and features in the year ahead! En-suite dreams!
When Hooe couple Phil and Jackie Barnett decided their outdated bathroom needed a complete makeover they asked a number of companies to quote for the work.
enable Steve and his team of skilled tradesmen and fitters to undertake the work. “We had to replace some of the floorboards, completely re-plaster the room and install new wiring and plumbing,” said Steve.
The stand-out choice was local family firm Dream Bathrooms, which is run by Steve Short. The couple had read about Dream Bathrooms in the Plymouth Magazine and had no hesitation in appointing them to do the work.
The Dream Bathrooms team installed a huge new walk-in shower, complete with large square rain shower head and art deco style shower controls.
Retired Ministry of Defence police officer Phil said: “Steve was brilliant in advising us on the best way to make the most of the space available and explained everything simply and clearly.”
A range of Hacienda black bathroom units were fitted along one wall, along with a marble wash basin and granite effect worktops. A huge bespoke mirror was fitted above the units to create a sense of greater reflected space, while new downlighters added to the bright new look. A new radiator and heated towel rail were also installed.
Much of the space in the 12 square metre en-suite bathroom was previously taken up by a bath and separate shower, which had a leak. Jackie said: “We never used the bath as both Phil and I prefer to shower so that was one of the main reasons we wanted a complete change.”
Slate grey porcelain floor tiles and mottle grey wall tiles provided an overall stylish finish to the bathroom.
Steve came up with detailed plans for the refurbishment and then helped Phil and Jackie choose stylish fixtures and fittings, including new floor tiles and wall tiles. During the two week project in May, the bathroom was completely stripped bare - including removing a wall - to
Phil and Jackie are delighted with the finished result. “We love our new shower, especially the rain effect shower head,” said Jackie. Phil added: “We couldn’t be happier with Dream Bathrooms in terms of the quality of their work and customer service.”

WEDDING MATTERS
Talented young dressmaker Ailsa scoops prestigious wedding industry award A talented young dressmaker, originally from Plymstock, has beaten off stiff competition to win a prestigious wedding industry award. Ailsa Munro, who is now based near Saltash, only launched her wedding dress business earlier this year and said it was an ‘amazing surprise’ to win the South West Newcomer of the Year category at the 2017 Wedding Industry Awards Night in Bristol. Ailsa, who hand-crafts her dresses in a studio workshop in St Dominick, said: “I’m thrilled and honoured to have been considered for either of the awards, let alone actually win one. It’s a bit overwhelming, but I’m really pleased that the work I’ve put in has been recognised, and I hope that it will be a boost to my self-employed business.” Ailsa has been designing and creating her own wedding dresses since March, providing bespoke, ethically sourced dresses for all styles and tastes. In winning the Newcomer award, Ailsa was considered by the judging panel to have made the highest-quality impact on the wedding industry, for both the consumers and wedding industry colleagues, of any new business this year. In addition to winning the regional Newcomer award – which stretches from Cornwall to Gloucestershire – Ailsa was awarded second-place in the ‘Wedding Dressmaker/Designer of theYear’ category, despite only opening for business this year. Ailsa studied fashion at Edinburgh University, graduating last year. She believes that every bride deserves the dress of their dreams for the special day. All of her dresses are produced from scratch, and the bride-to-be is heavily involved in the design of her dress, from start to finish. She is planning to take her fledgling enterprise to the next level in 2017 by joining with a collective of wedding industry

businesses in taking studio space at Mount Wise House as part of an initiative from Danielle Donnelly, who runs The Wedding Hub in Plymouth. As a result of winning the honour, Ailsa Munro Dressmaker will now be entered into the national finals of The Wedding Industry Awards at the Café de Paris, in Piccadilly Circus, London, on January 12.

WOMEN AT WORK
From trainee to owner: Nikki’s 17year journey at Skin Deep Hair Salon
Nikki Wilson...proud owner of Skin Deep Hair Salon
Nikki Willson remembers the exact wording of the notice she spotted in the window of her local hair salon in Plympton 17 years ago: “It said ‘Modern apprentice required – apply within’. I was 17-years-old and doing a GNVQ in Business at Hele’s School at the time but when I saw the notice I thought ‘right, let’s give it a go’ – and I’ve never looked back.” The notice was at Skin Deep Hair Salon in St Stephens Place on the Ridgeway, where, at the time of going to press, Nikki was about to be handed the keys as the proud new owner. The outgoing owner, Nicola Polson, had given Nikki the apprentice position in 1999 and had promoted her from trainee to senior stylist and then salon director. When Nicola announced recently that she was retiring after running the salon for 30 years, there seemed only one natural candidate to offer the reins to: “Nicola came to me and asked if I wanted to take over the business and I said ‘yes’ straight away,” said Nikki. “I’m so excited! I just want to get stuck in. “Nicola has been a great role model and is a huge reason why I want to follow in her footsteps and become a businesswoman,” she added. Going with her instincts and grabbing opportunities has kept Nikki in good stead up until now. Leaving her 6th form studies to take the apprenticeship job might have seemed a risk but those fears were dispelled within a week: “I knew there and then that this was the job I was going to do and that I was going to be good at it,” said Nikki, who specialises in bridal hair. “It just felt right.” Nikki has 11 staff including three apprentices and several stylists who also started there as trainees, just like Nikki. “We’re kick-starting the careers of other girls,” she said. “I know from my
10\
The Plymouth Magazine January 2017
own experience that in-salon apprenticeships are the best way to learn. You can’t beat first hand training, and it still has a classroom element at City College Plymouth one day and one evening a week. “We also have continuing professional development so we get some great people into the salon on special training days to share their skills and experience, and our stylists have trips to London to learn what’s new in the profession. We deliver a very high standard of hairdressing and that’s because of our training and continuing development.” The smooth handover means that all the stylists will remain, which is great news for the salon’s customers: “Nothing changes as far as our customers are concerned,” said Nikki. “One of the reasons we have long-standing customers is because we have long-standing stylists. “It’s a happy ship here and people feel this when they come in. The salon is friendly and welcoming and this is especially important for our new customers because walking into a new salon can be a little bit intimidating. That’s not the case here. Our receptionists are also happy to talk through your requirements when you book.” Nikki and her team offer a free consultation to customers before their first appointment, to learn all about their hair and what they’re looking for: “Our staff care about how our customers feel and we want everyone to leave our salon feeling good about themselves.” Nikki is already looking ahead to introducing some new products and services. The GHD range will be added to the Redken and Affinage products used by the salon and all of these are also available to buy, as well as a range of accessories and gift vouchers. Skin Deep also offers Olaplex, a new treatment which links broken bonds in the hair. “To get your hair looking shiny and healthy you need to use the best products,” said Nikki. “So one of the first things I’ll be doing is introducing the GHD range, which is fabulous. I want the salon to evolve and develop over time. It’s also important that we continue to keep on top of new trends and that’s something the staff play a big part in. “We’re also talking about introducing some Ladies Evenings for busy mums or friends to treat themselves over a chat and a glass of wine.” Talking of busy mums, Nikki has two very special customers: “My husband Paul and I have two daughters, Jessica, 6, and Hollie, 3. They’re my little helpers and they love coming to have their hair done.” Skin Deep Hair Salon is unisex and takes walk-ins. Opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 9am to 8pm on Thursdays; 9am to 5.30pm on Fridays and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

BUSINESS MATTERS
Peter Goord Travel – flying high for 40 years! At your service...the Peter Goord Travel team with Victor Goord (left) and Anthony Goord (right)
It really will be a Happy New Year for Plymouth’s wellknown Goord family as they and their team celebrate the 40th anniversary of their business, Peter Goord Travel. When company founder Peter Goord returned to these shores after a spell living in sunny Spain he recognised it was perfect timing to open an independent, family-owned travel agency. He’d already been running an insurance brokerage in Crownhill Road, West Park since the 1960s and decided to buy the property next door to launch the new venture with his long-term business partner at the time, Fred Lewis. That was in January 1977. Forty years on and Peter is enjoying his retirement while sons Anthony and Victor take care of business. Anthony is the face ‘front of house’ while elder brother Victor works on the digital and marketing side of the business. Between them they have over half a century of experience. Many of our readers will be familiar with Anthony. He has been writing the travel page for Plymouth Magazine ever since the 3rd edition – the current edition is the 151st. And he took over from dad Peter as the expert voice on BBC Radio Devon’s holiday slot. Anthony has seen many changes in the 25-plus years he’s
been in the business. One of the biggest was in 2010 when the insurance business was sold, allowing them to focus entirely on Peter Goord Travel. The sale also enabled them to knock the two shops into one, creating a much bigger area with plenty of space for comfy seating and brochure displays. There have been huge changes in the world of travel, too, since their dad first opened the doors of Peter Goord Travel. Back then, short haul package holidays were what almost everyone wanted and they were the foundation of the business: “Dad built the business up very quickly and that was largely through people booking holidays to Spain, Greece and Cyprus,” said Anthony. “Some of those first clients in 1977 are still coming to us now to book their holidays. In fact, I’m booking holidays for some of their grandchildren!” The package holidays remain as popular as ever, but one of the changes in recent years has been the growth in long-haul and bespoke holidays. It was an area that Peter Goord Travel was quick to dive into: “We’ve always been able to look after our package holiday customers. But we saw a gap in the market for those who wanted something else, something a bit different. That’s our speciality, offering tailor-made and special occasion holidays such as honeymoons, multi-centre trips and cruises.” In 2011, Kuoni Holidays approached Peter Goord Travel and asked them to partner Kuoni in the South West: “They were obviously impressed with what we were doing and it was a compliment that they came to us, a small family firm,” said

Anthony. “Within 18 months we deals from 30 different tour became Kuoni’s top partner store companies.” in the country.” The world seems a much So what’s the secret to the smaller place now than it did in success? Why do holidaymakers 1977; there aren’t many places come back to Peter Goord that haven’t been opened up Travel year after year? “We’re to tourism. Other previously independent, we can offer popular destinations, however, holidays from any holiday are currently ‘closed’ to tourism company as long as the company because of unrest. So which are the top holiday “Offering good customer destinations in 2017? “If you’re service is also very important looking for a short haul holiday to us. But now it’s time to bring our menu to customers from local businesses and members of the public who need something quick, easy and nutritious to eat during the day.” As well as the £5 shark boxes, Coffee Shark can also deliver any of the items on its extensive menu; just a quick phone call is all it takes and Roan and his team will be happy to help. FOOD MATTERS
AtKitchen’s Asian cuisine hits the No 1 spot! Pond (right) and members of the AtKitchen team
It’s only been open a matter of months and already its ultra-fresh, tasty food has made it Plymouth’s Number 1 ranked restaurant on Tripadvisor: welcome to AtKitchen Asian Cuisine. Situated on Plymouth Market’s Mezzanine, and serving during the market’s daytime hours, AtKitchen’s ethos of simple, reasonably priced Asian food has proved a hit with diners since it was opened in May 2016 by Thai-born ownerchef Prisssana Hosakon. Prisanna, known by her nickname, Pond, opened AtKitchen after moving to Plymouth from London in March 2016: “I moved to London from Thailand 14 years ago and I trained as a chef in London under a Japanese chef,” explained Pond. “Then I visited Plymouth in 2015 and I really liked it. It’s relaxing and it’s beside the sea so I decided to leave London and move here.” It was her business partner, Giles Andrews, who spotted the unit among the food outlets upstairs at the indoor market: “Giles did all of the design and building work himself. He hand-made all the tables and did the kitchen. The little wire men that we have on top of the units was his idea, too. Within three weeks, we were ready to open.” Since launching in May she has now taken on five staff – some of whom are cooks who first came here as customers: “I didn’t know anyone at first so I started to ask my customers to spread the word that I was looking for chefs. That’s how I found my staff. Some came to me through word of mouth and others were customers!” Word of mouth has also helped to alert Plymouth diners: “People come in and taste the food and they tell other people. That’s how we’ve grown and I want to thank them for posting their reviews on Tripadvisor and making AtKitchen Number 1.” At the time of writing, well over 100 customers had posted reviews and AtKitchen had a maximum 5 rating. It also has the highest food hygiene rating of 5.

According to Pond, there is no secret to AtKitchen’s success: “It’s just very fresh, healthy food, which I think people want. The other reason is that I have good staff who really care about food; they cook with their heart.” The menu is kept deliberately quite small but, because everything is cooked to order, it’s possible to vary the ingredients and degree of spiciness if requested: “Although most people want us to serve our food the way we do it,” added Pond. Breakfast options are served all day with prices from £2.50 and baguettes such as duck with hoisin sauce or pork with peanut sauce are £4.95. The main dishes are a combination of Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese. Noodle soup and rice noodles are £4.95, while curry & rice five spice mains are Noodle soup - braised pork with £5.50. Noodle soup options include chicken; thinly-sliced steak; slow-cooked beef brisket; braised pork with five spice; spicy king prawns; and vegetarian. Curries include stir fried beef & lemongrass; aubergine with chilli & basil; stir fried mixed vegetables; and spicy quid with green bean and basil. Specials, including crispy duck with melon salad, and crab fried rice are £5.95 to £6.95. Smaller tapas-style dishes such as summer prawn rolls, green bean with peanut dressing, pork dumplings with soy dip and calamari with spicy coating are £3.95. These are popular with groups wanting to share a number of dishes. “Some people can’t make up their minds what they want so they say ‘you make something up for me’ and we do,” said Pond. AtKitchen does not sell alcohol but has a selection of made to order healthy smoothies as well as teas and coffees, including Vietnamese coffee. The rapid success of AtKitchen means that Pond is now considering opening a second restaurant: “I’m surprised that this has all happened so quickly,” she said. “Our customers are now asking if we can open somewhere in the evenings so that’s my dream eventually.” So is she pleased she made the move to Plymouth? “Oh yes, I love it and the people are so friendly. I’m very glad I came here. What makes me really happy is seeing people enjoy our food and telling their friends about us.” AtKitchen is open 10am to 4.30pm, Mondays to Saturdays. Delivery is also available.

You Me at Six at the Pavilions British rock band You Me at Six have gained a reputation as being one of the best live bands in the UK, with sold-out tours that have seen them headline both Wembley Arena and the O2. The five-man band from Surrey will be heading to Plymouth on April 5 as part of a UK tour which starts in Manchester and ends at London’s Alexandra Palace. The 2017 dates will follow the release of what will be their fifth studio album, the highly anticipated Night People, which is due for release in early January. The album will help to cement their status as one of the most important rock bands to emerge from the UK. It was recorded in Nashville at Black Bird Studios with Grammy award-winning producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, James Bay) and mixed by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chilli Peppers). You Me At Six began as most bands do: friends coming together and playing music to pass the time. United by their love of bands such as Fall Out Boy and Blink-182, the quintet started out practicing in their garages and playing shows for friends. Slowly building a fan base across the UK, thanks in part to MySpace, You Me At Six began touring the country, letting their fan base grow organically. By the summer of 2007, with over a million plays on their MySpace page, the band played a support slot to a sold out crowd at London’s Underworld club and it was clear this band was a cut above the rest. You Me at Six have had a hugely successful career to date, selling over 600,000 albums globally. The band have had three top five albums including a UK number 1 on their last release, Cavalier Youth. With new tour dates scheduled and anticipation building for their upcoming album, it looks like 2017 is going to be another huge year for the band.

Dog lover Lesley has a new spring in her step Taking her beautiful Bernese Mountain dogs for walks every day is one of the joys in life for Lesley Cox from Plympton. But a few months ago the twice daily routine had become a nightmare for Lesley as she started to experience unbearable pain in her feet. “I spend most of the time wearing wellington boots so that I can take the dogs for a walk,” said Lesley. “I know they are not particularly good for your feet, so I guess that didn’t help the situation. “I started to get pain up the back of my heel about 18 months ago, and found it increasingly difficult to walk properly on one of my feet. I bought some walking boots, which helped for a while, but as soon as I took them off I was in agony again.” Determined to keep up the daily walks, Lesley started taking pain killers, but the situation got so bad that she was forced to visit her GP. “I was advised to do different foot exercises and also had steroid injections in my heel,” said Lesley. “It helped for a while, but the pain just returned.”
Lesley and her Bernese Mountain dogs
A friend recommended Foot Solutions to Lesley, but she admits she was unsure at first. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but hoped they could help me. I wasn’t convinced - but I couldn’t have been more wrong.” Former hairdresser Lesley had a painful condition called plantar fasciitis, which affects millions of people. But after she visited the Foot Solutions store in Royal Parade in August Lesley has never looked back. Foot Solutions staff carried out a range of tests on her feet and posture and provided her with customised insoles to support her feet – and the difference has been dramatic. “I wear the insoles all the time - in my slippers, in my shoes and in my wellies,” said Lesley. “Now I often walk the dogs three times a day - usually at Saltram – and I can walk for miles and miles without any pain at all,” she added.

Barbican and Athe in important new p Barbican Theatre have announced a new partnership with the Plymouth Athenaeum to bring Le Navet Bete’s new show Dracula: The Bloody Truth to it’s stage in April. The show will see the opening of the historic Athenaeum Theatre for the city of Plymouth at Easter once again. Barbican Theatre first met Le Navet Bete in 2008 and have worked closely with them ever since on six co-productions. Following sell out versions of two previous Christmas productions - The Wizard of Oz and Robin Hood and His Merry Men – this year’s Barbican Theatre Christmas production of The Jungle Book has been another massive success. Sheila Snellgrove, chief executive of Barbican Theatre said: “Le Navet Bete’s work is now so successful it deserves a larger stage. We want to keep them in the city and support their careers, so we met with Owen Ryles at The Athenaeum last summer. “Gradually a partnership developed to re-open the Athenaeum for theatrical performances, with Dracula as the first production. The Plymouth Athenaeum is held so dearly in the hearts of so many Plymothians and I’m thrilled we can play a part in

bringing theatre back to its stage,” she added. Plymouth Athenaeum dates back to 1812, founded originally as The Plymouth Institution and renamed the Plymouth Athenaeum in 1961, after its home was rebuilt following destruction during the Blitz of 1941. The Plymouth Athenaeum theatre closed in July 2009, although its charitable society has remained open for use by members and a wide-range of activities, including lecture, talks and art and literary groups. So it is very much hoped the partnership between Barbican Theatre and The Plymouth Athenaeum will be the first step in bringing more performances to the theatre. Owen Ryles, honorary general secretary of the Athenaeum, said: “The Athenaeum has such a rich and cherished heritage as a theatrical venue. We are very excited to be working with a high-calibre organisation such as the Barbican Theatre to relaunch shows on our stage. “We believe that this will be the start of an on-going, long-term partnership that will provide a pathway for the growth of both organisations. We share common values: the promotion of learning and the development of local talent and skills. And I am sure that audiences will love the opportunity to see such a great show as Dracula in April.” Dracula: The Bloody Truth, produced by Le Navet Bete in association with Exeter Northcott Theatre is a theatrical retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. This brand new comedy theatre show will take audiences on a journey across Europe from the dark and sinister Transylvanian mountains to the awkwardly charming seaside town of Whitby and into the world of the supernatural, educating us all on the perils of dealing with vampires. There will be a total of 10 performances of Dracula: The Bloody Truth at the Athenaeum between Thursday April 6 and Saturday April 15 (seven evening and three matinees. Age guidance 8+).

History Festival dates announced The dates for the next Plymouth History Festival have been confirmed as Saturday May 6 to Sunday June 4. This will be the fifth time the annual celebration of the city’s heritage has taken place. So far more than 600 events have been enjoyed by thousands of people, all of whom have had the opportunity to find out more about many different aspects of Plymouth’s proud history. Each year the festival programme includes a range of exhibitions, displays, special events and family activities. It also features a large number of guided walks, illustrated talks and behindthe-scenes tours. Venues range from libraries, community halls and churches to country houses and historic landmarks. Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “The History Festival has become a well-loved fixture on the city’s annual event calendar so we’re very

pleased to be able to confirm the dates for 2017. Each year provides another opportunity to showcase many of the fascinating stories and characters that have played a part in the story of Plymouth. Just as they have done in previous years, we’re hoping as many people as possible will get involved.” The festival will kick off on Saturday May 6 with ‘Local
Weddings Proms Baby showers Gala dinners Birthdays
Studies Day’ – a special event packed with talks and presentations about heritage including the Restoration, the Victorian era and an update about the History Centre project. Other events during the festival will include a nationally touring exhibition looking at ‘Britain in the Fifties’ as well as displays and special events marking
the 50th anniversary of Sir Francis Chichester completing his historic solo circumnavigation of the world. It will also feature the first ‘Plymouth Festival of Words’. Building on the success of the former Plymouth International Book Festival, this event will be organised through a partnership between Literature Works, Plymouth University, Peninsula Arts, Plymouth City Council and the local community, supported by Arts Council England. Organisers of events that they would like to see included on the programme should email the details to museumevents@plymouth. gov.uk by January 22. Event organisers are asked to provide as much detail as possible, including the venue address, start and finish times, booking and admission details. There is no specific theme for the festival but all events must have a clear link to the history of Plymouth.

Fabulous new kitchen is just what the doctor ordered! A Plymouth couple who both work at Derriford Hospital have praised the excellent treatment they received when they decided to have a new kitchen. Paediatric consultant Myooren Wimalendra and his wife Emily, who is a paediatric nurse, moved into their detached Glenholt home at the end of 2013. Emily said: “We were not particularly
Tel: 01752 255022 www.kfkitchens.co.uk enquiries@kfkitchens.co.uk
happy with the layout of the kitchen. There was a lot of wasted space and a peninsula breakfast bar which really didn’t work well.” The couple visited two sets of neighbours who had recently had new kitchens installed in their search for a company to carry out the work. Myooren said: “They were both beautiful kitchens and we contacted both of the companies involved to talk through what we wanted. “It was KF Kitchens who impressed us enormously. Not only did they come up with some really excellent ideas, but were also able to give us a pretty precise guideline estimate of what the cost would be. “The other company were unwilling to give us an estimate as they said it depended on the final specification.” The couple spent several sessions with Nathan and Derinda Damarell at the spacious KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill selecting the style of their new kitchen as well as choosing the appliances. “Nathan was brilliant,” said Emily. “He came up with some really positive design suggestions for our new kitchen which really took our breath away. “It was also lovely to sit down with Derinda and discuss the colour schemes and finishes available and then see them presented as 3D impressions through their CAD software. “Derinda was really helpful and between us we came up with a really stunning colour scheme. Nathan also designed the new kitchen to make the most of all the space - including, to our delight, an island with built in NEFF induction hob and extractor hood.” The couple chose a Cashmire
grey gloss finish for the majority of cupboards, doors and kitchen units, along with Avola Grey textured wood finish for a number of drawers and doors. A trio of eye-level NEFF ovens feature along the length of one wall, while another wall houses a built in Miele fridge, Smeg freezer and Artline pullout larder. The NEFF ovens, all featuring slide and hide doors, include a combination steam oven and two full size ovens featuring Circotherm technology. The NEFF appliances also include a fully-integrated built in dishwasher which has a nifty timelight device which projects the time left to finish the programme onto the floor. Myooren also chose a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water as part of a granite doublesink arrangement. Blanco Stellar Silestone quartz worktops installed by Mayflower Stone are featured throughout. New low energy lighting, a designer radiator in Anthracite grey, plinth heater and wood effect Karndean flooring completed the stunning new kitchen. Myooren said: “We couldn’t be happier with our wonderful new kitchen. The way the whole project was handled was exemplary from start to finish. They advised us it would take three weeks to complete the installation - and they were spot on. “The team of skilled tradesmen particularly their fitter Kevin - liaised closely with each other and with us throughout ensuring that there were no delays.” Emily added: “What could have been a very stressful time - particularly with our two young daughters - turned out to be a very pleasant experience. We are thrilled with KF Kitchens and can’t thank them enough.”

Film news from Plymouth Arts Centre Plymouth Arts Centre’s Bringing in Baby programme continues in January with the screening of A Street Cat Named Bob on January 12 at 11am. Parents, grandparents and carers of babies under 12 months old can enjoy the film without having to worry about baby making too much noise! This is the true-life story of an injured stray tabby cat named Bob who adopted homeless drug-addict James Bowen (played by Luke Treadaway) and turned his life around in the most spectacular fashion – together, they’ve sold five million books. So far, so upbeat: yet this is still a slyly subversive film with a social point to make as it highlights James’s isolation in a cold, hard-faced London which responds better to animals than its hopeless humans. A standout performance from Treadaway. The bar will be open for drinks and snacks. A hot or cold drink is included in the ticket price. Brad Pitt and Marion Cottillard star in Allied (15) which is screened on a number of dates between January 13 and January 19. fighter Marianne Beausejour Cottillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of war. A stylish, period drama with Cotillard and Pitt both at the top of their games. Award-winning The Birth of a Nation (15) is screened on January 27, 28 and 31 and February 1 and 2. This explosive double Sundance-winner tells the true story of Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher who became the radical leader of an 1831 revolt. Turner, a literate slave and preacher in Virginia is forced to preach submission to his fellow slaves by his cash-strapped owner. As he both endures and witnesses countless terrible atrocities, he begins to orchestrate an uprising in the hope of leading his people to freedom. A thoroughly timely film - given the momentum behind Black Lives Matter and the increase in racial clashes in the US - Birth of a Nation asks audiences to take a cold, hard look at America’s brutal past, and ask: what has changed, and what has stayed the same?

New treatment can produce a great facelift
Dr Ruth Harker
Is your face starting to sag around the jaw-line and lower cheek and mouth? Unfortunately, this sagginess happens as we age, some people sooner than others, but it happens for sure! Also it happens if you have lost a lot of weight or have been unwell. Dr Ruth Harker of the Erme Clinic is able to offer the brilliantly innovative Silhouette Soft Thread treatment at the Erme Clinic. Dr Harker said: “The results of the no knife, skin lifting treatment are discreet and natural. Dubbed the ‘puppet lift’ by the popular press, this might be the right treatment for you!” Dr Harker, deals with a wide range of skin problems and will do her best to help patients, whatever the problem is and will suggest the best skin care plan. Now that this thread technique has been thoroughly researched and established Dr Harker has introduced it at her Skin Clinic. The highly specialised threads are made in the USA and have been developed over the past six years. Over 130,000 procedures have been performed with stunning results. The procedure can only be performed by specially trained
doctors and Dr Harker, a highly experienced doctor, trained in Harley Street in London for this procedure. She said: “You only have to be brave for a few seconds for the local anaesthetic injections, which are similar, but smaller to those at the dentist. The threads are painlessly introduced and tightened and produce a lift similar to if you push the sides of your cheeks up towards the temples. “The result is subtle but good and can often take five or 10 years off your appearance and last up to 18 months to two years. The threads are similar to the dissolvable sutures used inside your body by surgeons. Along the threads are bidirectional cones which stimulate collagen production in the connective tissue under the skin surface. All the components are totally resorbable, biocompatible and biodegradable.” In the one treatment there are two actions: an instant lifting effect, and then as the weeks and months go by a secondary regenerating action for gradual and natural results. Phone the clinic to request a call back on 075 302 544 05 and visit the Erme Clinic website www.ermeclinic.co.uk Dr Harker will then have a chat with you and answer your
1 in 5 Bowel Cancer Diagnoses Missed A study in the British Journal of Cancer suggests that one in five bowel cancer patients diagnosed when presenting in an emergency situation from 2005 to 2006 had ‘red flag’ symptoms that should have been picked up earlier. A similar number had been to see their GP on multiple prior occasions with symptoms. Whilst the study suggests that the majority of the emergency patients did not have such alarming symptoms in advance of their presentation as an emergency, those that did had symptoms including rectal bleeding or blood in the stools, a change in bowel habit and stomach pain. Earlier, non-emergency, diagnosis at the stage at which patients present to their GPs would make a better outcome more likely. Hopefully the study will assist busy GPs to recognise the patterns
of symptoms of bowel cancer (colon and rectal) earlier and result in referral of patients to hospital for specialist investigations promptly to maximise the effectiveness of relevant treatment. As a firm specialising in representing victims of medical negligence, Wolferstans have acted and continue to act for clients and their families in cases where opportunities for an earlier diagnosis of bowel cancer have been missed. In one such case, Wolferstans acted for the widow of a 52 year old man, who consulted with a GP on nine occasions over a period of seven months, initially with pain associated with defecation and with additional symptoms of painful rectal bleeding, weight loss and poor appetite. The GP prescribed treatment for haemorrhoids, eventually making a routine (later upgraded to urgent) referral to a specialist. An examination under anaesthetic revealed a tumour. Surgery was performed but, sadly, it was too late and the client’s husband died. Wolferstans recovered damages for the Estate. Wolferstans also acted for a disabled man who saw his GP with a two to three month history of passing blood in his stools. Again,
haemorrhoids were diagnosed. He saw his GP three more times with the same symptoms. The symptoms developed over six months to include more bleeding and abdominal pain which was treated as an infection. One year on, he was passing blood clots and was experiencing increased stomach pain. Despite the lengthy history, only a routine referral to a specialist was made. The specialist diagnosed cancer of the rectum and investigations revealed that the cancer had spread to the lungs requiring surgery and chemotherapy. Wolferstans succeeded in obtaining an admission of liability and recovered damages for their client. In an ideal world our services would not be needed, but if you think you may be the victim of medical negligence, and would like to have a free initial discussion, without any obligation, please contact Ann Ball on 01752 292374 or email her at aball@wolferstans.com. If you are concerned about your symptoms, there is a useful symptom checker on the Beating Bowel Cancer website: www. beatingbowelcancer.org/understanding-bowelcancer/symptoms/ along with a wealth of other help and advice.

TRAVEL MATTERS Cala Fornells Bay in Majorca
So many reasons why Majorca is first choice for holidaymakers I’m in no doubt that many holidaymakers choose Majorca because it’s seen as a safe bet. The majority of our regional airports have flights to the island throughout the summer so it’s no small wonder over two million of us take the plunge every year. Tens of thousands venture from Exeter and Bristol Airports alone.
feeling nothing inside the imposing medieval walls of the city will be able to live up to first impressions. It is definitely worth a brief tour of the inside of the cathedral, but in truth compared with its imposing exterior it all seems a little underwhelming. The Rose Window, certainly one the largest stained-glass panels I’ve ever seen, probably just about justifies the effort. I’m not a great one for standing taking It is difficult to think of a more compelling photographs preferring to lose myself in the combination of short flying times (about 2½ atmosphere of the places I visit. hours), a wonderful Mediterranean climate and For that reason Palma is one of my favourite white sandy beaches. I invariably discover a hidden- away beach resort, but invariably after a day or two of bar or café, then frustratingly I can never find it relaxing in the sun I start to get itchy-feet and feel the urge to explore……. again. It’s all part of the enchantment. Away from its medieval roots Palma is a The capital of Majorca, Palma, could fill a By Victor Goord smart and vibrant capital city. Alcudia Promenade
Majorca is a large island, much larger than most people anticipate and as a result there are numerous resort areas dotted around its coast. I won’t pretend that I’ve covered all of its 1400 square miles, so instead I will focus on the three places I have enjoyed most. The perfect all-round family resort has to be Alcudia on the north coast with its long stretches of sandy beach and shallow child-friendly waters. If a couple of hours on a bus to Palma seem a little daunting Alcudia has plenty of history of its own. The gated old town dates from 14th-century with charming cobbled streets and pavement cafés. As an added bonus there’s even some Roman ruins thrown in. Although Alcudia does get quite busy at the height of season in July and August, it is by no means Majorca’s nightlife hotspot. That title and somewhat dubious reputation goes to Magaluf and its quieter, but none less busy neighbour Palma Nova. In recent years these two towns have attracted the young and lively from all over Northern Europe and are extremely popular with stag and hen groups. Just 20 minutes from the airport they seem tailored made for partying weekend breaks and as a result their appeal to families and older couples is rather limited especially in the months of July and August. That said, they do ‘exactly what it says on the tin’ and I have had some memorable holidays in Palma Nova. I suppose what is so special about Majorca is that you can choose the exact balance of nightlife, culture and relaxation to suit your mood. Today I’m in the mood where my personal favourite is Cala D’or on the south-east coast. Who knows which resort I may fancy tomorrow? In Cala D’or you get an authentic Spanish flavour with what I would term a sophisticated, but still fun night-time atmosphere. I love spending time at the chic marina with its many trendy and perhaps a little expensive bars and restaurants. Strangely I find with Majorca that a half-board hotel stay works very well for both a variety of dining and keeping a lid on the budget. Away from the main resort areas the Island has a green but rugged countryside making it wonderful to explore. A mountain backdrop accompanies you as you meander along gradually narrowing roads to get to the heart of the Island. You can really only capture the scale of the place when you take in the breath-taking view from a hill-top vantage point. If you’re prepared to get up early many of the towns and villages hold weekly markets which are in full swing by 8am. In typical Spanish style the stall holders begin packing-up in the late morning with their days work done. It’s easy to find out where each days markets will be held and I know many tourists who plan their whole holiday around taking in the best ones. If hiring a car seems like too much hassle there are numerous organised tours, shopping visits and boat trips to choose from. I think the local bus service is good enough to do most things for yourself and the extra sense of adventure is priceless. Whether it’s your first time or like me you’re making your umpteenth visit you just don’t tire of Majorca, it really does have it all… Happy Holidays!

A charity cake sale in Plymouth’s Devonport Naval Base has raised £800 The bakes were made by naval base contractor ESS employees Lauren Marlow and Jo Day and event organiser Royal Naval leading rating Hannah Nelder and Jacqueline Clink at the HQ of the Flag Officer Sea Training organisation. Hannah, who has organised similar events when serving in warships, said: “I decided to organise this as I have found it is a great way to bring personnel together to raise morale and socialise in a more informal environment. It also has the added bonus of raising money for good causes.’’ Charities benefiting will be Jeremiah’s Journey, and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. Hannah added: “Although I have no personal connection with the charities, I like the challenge of organising events such as this and I am always an advocate of charities that have a connection with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Jeramiah’s Journey and the RNRMC both fulfil this criteria.” Hannah also thanked Lauren and Jo and Wendy Cracroft for helping make the event a success. Rear Admiral John Clink, who heads FOST, said: “At the end of a busy year this is a fantastic opportunity for FOST staff to relax and take stock of what they have achieved in training not just our own navy but our international partners. At the same time we whole heartedly support both Jeremiah’s Journey and the RNRMC who can make the world of difference to our sailors and the local community during difficult times.”

RESEARCH MATTERS
Plymouth Babylab is celebrating a decade of research into the minds of children. The first baby came to visit the Babylab on January 17 2007 after Caroline Floccia and her postgraduate students conducted the first recruitment session in the city. Since its first launch, over 5,500 babies have come through the Babylab’s door, participating in hundreds of studies. Allegra Cattani of Babylab said: “A big thank you to all the parents, toddlers and young children who have helped us over the years to answer many of the intriguing questions in the Developmental Psychology. “During the past decade, the Babylab has supported the research of academic colleagues, undergraduates, and postgraduate students in their dissertations to successfully complete their studies at the University of Plymouth. “Through the participation of the young babies and toddlers, we have learned how they distinguish different sounds, perceive mispronunciations of words, recognise their own accent from another - for example Plymouth from Scottish – and how children separate the sounds they hear into word units. Two recent projects looked into the knowledge and production of words of children aged two. Both of these projects aimed to assist health care professionals in the early identification of children that may need speech, communication, or language support. The identification of an at risk child for language impairment or delay within the early stages of development can lead to early interventions by speech and language therapists to address these issues before the child goes to school. “Looking specifically at English-speaking children, we adapted a card game to look at the skill of common words, actions, and descriptions used. This game was standardised

using 367 children aged between 19 and 37 months. We constructed percentile levels for every month where a given child can be compared to other children of the same age. We hope that health care professionals will use the card game for diagnostic use in clinical settings,” added Allegra. “As for our bilingual participants, the Babylab was the headquarters of the large-scale UK Bilingual Project. In this study, we gathered the English vocabulary of over 400 24 month old children. Parents of the children participating, completed a number of online questionnaires, using a list of words in English and the additional language. “This was followed by a 10 minute phone call asking questions about the amount of time their child is exposed to the two languages in question. The ultimate goal is to create a free online tool to conduct early screening of children exposed to two different languages. As well as these studies, many others have investigated other areas in child development such as children committing errors in the size of objects, spatial mapping in the brain, political attitudes, autobiographical memory, movement control, and the understanding of other people’s emotions, to name but a few.” To celebrate its 10th birthday, Babylab have a brand new collection of small fluffy animals to give to the children as a thank you for participating and visiting them!

Family finances can take a major knock when a family member suffers a life changing injury such as a brain injury or the loss of a limb, even if that injured person is not the main breadwinner in the household. After an accident the family’s focus is on providing as much personal support as they can for their loved one. This is likely to be hospital visits or visits to a rehabilitation unit - such support inevitably takes its toll on the family finances. If liability is denied, and insurers are not forthcoming, social services should be contacted at the earliest opportunity, to provide support. Also, court proceedings should be commenced as soon as

FAMILY FINANCES practicable to decide liability.
Local authority support required by the Care Act 2014 is an area where assistance from, for example, a brain injury case manager, can be invaluable. The local authority is required to carry out an assessment. We recently had a case where the family found that the support provided by the local authority was too intrusive and they therefore opted for direct payments so as to manage their own care, but the direct payments provided were completely inadequate. The case manager was able to take matters up on the family’s behalf and secure substantially increased funding, including funding for respite, and thereby help to get the family on track. At the same time, welfare benefits should be urgently considered. The advice of a specialist can be extremely helpful in providing a guide to this complex area. Our experienced team at Wolferstans are able to put you in contact with organisations that can assist you with rehabilitation, care and benefits. We are also able, if liability is admitted, to request an interim payment. This can be required in order to cover the cost of purchasing accommodation and paying for the costs of adaptations etc. Employment issues often arise after a serious accident, even where the victim is able to return to work after

a period of rehabilitation. Our in-house employment team provide reassurance, support and direction where required. If the injured person has to give up their employment, a claim for loss of earnings can be made as part of the personal injury claim if their claim is successful. There is therefore much that can be done to alleviate the financial toll arising from a serious injury. The sooner the necessary steps can be put into place the better. When we are contacted after an accident this is the first issue that we consider. We can coordinate the necessary steps, so that the family can concentrate on what matters most, supporting their loved one and each other. If you require advice following a serious accident please contact Andrew Warlow, a partner and solicitor in our serious injuries team on 01752 663295 or by email awarlow@ wolferstans.com. CHARITY MATTERS
Three cheers for Plymouth’s
A Plymouth charity has triple cause to raise a toast to 2016, after it collected two awards for its work and a welcome £10,000 grant from supermarket, Tesco. The Horticultural Therapy Trust (HTT) is a small charity that works with people of all ages who experience disability, disadvantage or exclusion, by connecting them with nature in its ‘Gardening for Growth’ initiative. The trust is based at Penlee Valley allotments in Stoke but its two part time staff and founders, Deb Hoskin and Dennis Trewin, also take the work out to local communities, schools in areas of deprivation, and residential care homes in its outreach programme. In 2016 HTT won ‘Outstanding’ in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ RHS Britain in Bloom awards and ‘Silver’ in the Environment Project category of Plymouth in Bloom, for Gardening for Growth, Penlee Valley allotments. Awards were also received at High Street School (Silver) and at Marlborough Primary and Parkwood Residential Home (both Outstanding), whom HTT outreach to. And in December, the charity learnt it had won a £10,000 grant from Tesco’s Bags of Help fund. The money will go toward repairing the vandalised poly-tunnel, buying a disability access composting toilet for the site, and a pizza oven for participants to cook the food they grow. Deb and Dennis can be found at the allotment each Wednesday and Thursday, together with up to 20 participants for whom gardening in the peaceful, nurturing environment is extremely therapeutic. The participants are from all walks of life; some have been affected by accidental injury or physical illness, others by mental health issues. learning how to grow food and plants has, in turn, helped them to grow. Showing us around on a crisp sunny morning just before Christmas, Dennis says: “In the middle of summer this is a riot of colour – but it was just a bramble patch when we took it over. In that sense we had a blank canvas so we could create specific areas. For example, we were able to create sections with various levels where people of differing disabilities can work together. Over in the corner we have a wildlife area where we grow things that encourage wildlife – Ben loves this area especially – and we have a small sensory garden. At the top we have the poly-tunnel and the art shed where people can sit quietly. And everything has been designed by the participants themselves.” Deb, a qualified counsellor, is now also leading a new HTT programme for homeless people to visit the allotments on Friday mornings, using some additional adjoining space that the charity has just taken over: “We are working with Devonport Lifehouse on this,” said Deb. “The work only started at the end of November and the feedback we’re getting is that the work is already bringing a sense of value, belonging and self-worth.” HTT will be five-years old in July. It was set up by Deb and Dennis following the collapse of the Groundwork organisation: “Deb and I used to run the Horticultural Healing Project on their behalf,” explained Dennis. “‘Our’ project was changing people’s lives. One of our participants hadn’t left the house for seven years until they got involved with us. “We felt we couldn’t just leave all these people with nothing, so we set up HTT. Participants continued with us and together we have continued to create HTT. One participant has been doing this now for over 15 years.”

GARDENING MATTERS
January gardening job Happy New year everyone, wishing you health and plenty of dry gardening time! Well, for me 2016 seemed to go by quite quickly, or is that just what happens when you get older? That’s Christmas over for another year – but we will be heading off this month and early next month to buy for Christmas 2017! As usual the most popular tree was the Nordman Fir in the 6ft size. I have to say though the Norway Spruce we had from our local grower were absolutely amazing – they looked good in the field but when they arrived I think it would be safe to say they were the best in Plymouth. Generous on sizing, really bushy, great shapes, they were cut fresh so needles lasted really well, I will definitely be getting more and more trees from this grower. It was lovely to see lots of new faces at the garden centre this year and many people buying a real tree for the first time. We had the usual fun of handling some of the really big trees up to 16 feet tall. But we are made of strong stuff here although I must be getting older as my muscles seemed to ache more this year! So January - well I would like to be warming up in the Bahamas or somewhere, but as I am not it’s very much a tidy up and get ready for Spring month with plenty of jobs to do in the garden especially if the weather is fairly mild and dry!

Jobs for January
• Recycle your Christmas Tree for mulch or as we do with some of the rejects we use the tree to make a hedge to try and keep the deer out! • Clean pots and greenhouses ready for Spring • Prune apple and pear trees. Remember to thin the tree out - don’t just prune all the top back. • Start forcing rhubarb • Remember to keep feeding the birds and putting water out for them. Suet based treats are best in the winter. • Start planning your seed and vegetable growing • Keep protecting tender plants from frost by either moving into the greenhouse or fleecing. • General tidy and clear debris from the borders. • Clean the patio with a good cleaner to avoid slippery areas. • Once your Christmas Tree has gone, fill the space with a lovely houseplant. Some suggestions are Chamaedorea Elegans (Parlour Palms) beautiful, graceful and easy to look after. Dracena Fragans, tall and slender, easy to take care of. Dypsis Lutesceus (Areca Palm) classical palm shape and elegant. Ficus Benjamina a customer favourite which is nice and bushy. We also suggest all the general favourites like Orchids, Kalanchoe, African Violet, Peace Lily and Anthuriums.

Trends for 2017
There will be a number of new additions as always in our plant area. There are always lots of new bedding plants, but this year our visit to a bedding supplier saw an emphasis on ‘pot’ gardening recipes with ‘City Glamour’ a key theme which is great for us here in Plymouth where we have smaller gardens and courtyards. This type of gardening is really our thing: a big display of colour in a smaller space! The pots they have used in their examples are all from suppliers we use so it’s easy to replicate their ideas. We will see new Impatiens, Bacopa, Petunias, Begonias all suitable for pots or baskets. Petunia Night Sky looks stunning, Marigold French Fireball is impressive, Begonias Salmon Crush, Peach Shades, Shooting Star and Scarlet Burst are ones to look out for. bs and trends for 2017 very colourful spring and summer – let’s hope for plenty of sunshine to get the most of the plants this year! Perennial Plants: I see a growing trend in perennial plants every year with more and more people wanting to plant their borders just the once. This also gives reassurance that the plant comes back the following year and seems to give beginner gardeners more confidence in the ability to take care of their plants. All the cottage garden type plants are really popular. This really ties in with the growing demand for encouraging wildlife into your garden. Wildlife gardening grows in popularity every year as people create wildlife havens in their garden. More wildlife saves us time and jobs as it encourages predatory wildlife into the garden to eat all the pests that attack our cherished plants. This helps reduce the use of chemicals in gardening. Watching butterflies and dragonflies is also really lovely! Sadly for us we are seeing a decline in the bulb market which is something I am going to try and work on this year. Bulbs offer great value gardening and with planting combination packs some border design has been done for you. It seems, though, that people prefer plants as they can come on stream much more quickly. If we have a mild winter it seems many skip bulb planting which is sad. Take the Tete a Tete which used to be a bulb purchase, but now we sell so many plants it competes with the packs of bulbs. Again when beginners buy the plant they have instant success , the bulb can be seem less reliable if you don’t know how to grow bulbs.
and Daffodil Bird Feeders. The Poppy Campaign in support of the Royal British Legion was very popular and most of the country sold out before Remembrance Day. They are back in stock now and I think they will sell all year. For the Daffodil promotion there is a donation to Marie Curie for each item sold which will start in February. Look out for the promotional packs of bird food and the feeder in store. We look forward to seeing you in the garden Centre, check out the vouchers in our advert. Happy gardening in 2017 - Fiona
