Spoiled for choice comes to mind - and now we have even more choice with the latest addition to Plymouth’s restaurant scene: Salumi Bar & Eatery in Millbay. It’s been launched by Dave Jenkins and his wife Chantel, the couple behind the award-winning Rocksalt Cafe and Brasserie in nearby Stonehouse – with lots of help from the wider Jenkins family. A lot of people were surprised that Dave and Chantel chose a former pub in Stonehouse as the launch pad for Rocksalt - but it proved to be a stunning success. Now they aim to replicate that success after acquiring the former Sippers pub and converting it into the stylish Salumi Bar & Eatery. Although it’s been open for less than a month Salumi is already receiving rave reviews. While the big restaurant chains can rely on fancy marketing strategies and money-off promotions, local independent restaurant owners have to work hard to attract and keep customers - especially with so much competition. Top quality food and excellent service are the essential ingredients for success in the challenging dining out market - and it looks as though Salumi have another winner on their hands. You can read their story on pages 17 to 19. Regular readers will know that we love to champion the cause of new businesses and this issue is no exception. We have an interview with a mother and daughter who are producing some stunning glass art and a former Royal Navy officer who has set up her own business producing soft furnishings. We also have a feature on the Plymouth International Book Festival in October which is attracting many top names from the literary world. It all adds up to another bumper issue - we hope you enjoy it.

Gary is sent to the Tower! A former soldier who grew up in Plymouth has has been sent to the Tower - literally. Gary Thynne has joined the Tower of London as Yeoman Warder – more commonly known as ‘Beefeater’ – and will soon be taking up residence in the historic building with his wife Tamika. Gary, who is 41, grew up in the St Budeaux and West Park areas of Plymouth, attending West Park Primary School and Honicknowle Comprehensive. He joined the Army at the age of 16 and went on to spend 23 years of distinguished service in the Royal Artillery. Gary currently lives in Middlesex with his wife but when he completes his probationary period he and Tamika will live in the 1000 year old castle, which houses the Crown Jewels and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Before joining the Tower of London, he served in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Iraq, Afghanistan and former Yugoslavia amongst others. He also served with the Metropolitan Police before starting at the Tower of London. Outside of work Gary is involved with the Royal British Legion and backs the Campaign for Real Ale. Over the last few few months, Yeoman Warder Thynne has been learning word-for-word the Story - the script of the famous Yeoman Warder Tour - before being allowed to lead a tour himself. He will also become familiar with each of the 21 separate duties that the Yeoman Warders conduct each and every day. Gary saw the vacancy for the Yeoman Warder on the Historic Castles website and decided to apply. “My rank as sergeant major in the Royal Artillery meant that I had the qualification and service required - and was absolutely delighted to be appointed.” Gary said: “Being a Yeoman Warder is my dream job and

Former Plymouth soldier becomes one of the world-famous Beefeaters waking up on my birthday at the Tower of London to start my first day here was incredible. Looking over the river to see the Shard and HMS Belfast from a window at the Tower – there’s nothing quite like it! “I’ve been concentrating on learning the Story at the moment and exploring some of the hidden gems of the Tower, such as the peacefulness of the Cradle Tower.” Although Gary returned to Plymouth as often as he could when he joined the Army, his new role will make it difficult to find time to visit the city. His father and a number of other family members still live in Plymouth. Gary joins 36 Yeoman Warders who live at the Tower alongside their families. The Yeoman Warders are descended from the ancient band of warders who guarded the gates and royal prisoners, early in the Tower’s history. Modern Yeoman Warders are still Extraordinary Members of the Queen’s Bodyguard. They are all former warrant officers from Her Majesty’s Forces with an honourable service record of at least 22 years. Today they combine their traditional ceremonial role with a love of history to make the past come to life for visitors

Barbara and Kelly are making waves with their stunning fused glass art What is it people always tell you when things go wrong? “Everything happens for a reason.” Or: “It’ll all work out for the best.” For Plymouth mother and daughter, Barbara Dyer and Kelly Tombs, what seemed like a setback at the time has ended up with them pursuing a dream – and with huge success.
Barbara had already been attending evening classes for nearly five years with Ray Boundy of Glow Worm Stained Glass in Plympton and earned City & Guilds Levels 1, 2 and 3 in decorative stained glass before she was made redundant. She explained: “I went into his shop one day to see how much it would cost for a piece of stained glass and he said ‘if you’re interested, why not make your own? Come to our classes and learn how’. So I did.” Barbara and Kelly have The City & Guilds qualifications brought together their love of glass and nature to create encompass all aspects and styles of glasswork, including leaded beautiful pieces of fused glass art. They call themselves M&D pieces, copper foil work, mosaic and fused glass. When Kelly Glass – the initials standing for mother and daughter – and saw the fused glass work, she every day they have a blast became hooked too: “Mum had purchased quite a lot of her own together, working at their kilns equipment along the way so I in the garage of Barbara’s was able to have a go. I enjoyed home in Weston Mill village. Yet their venture might it so much I also decided to do the fused glass course with Ray. never have happened had We would cut and design pieces Barbara not been made at the kitchen table at home and redundant as PA to the Chief then take them to Ray to be fired Executive at the Co-op store in his kilns.” at Derry’s Cross, because it A stunning glass wave block produced by Barbara and Kelly It was during this time that was the redundancy money Barbara was made redundant: “I that made it possible for her to thought ‘right, I’m going to get myself a kiln’. We set the kiln purchase her first kiln. up in Kelly’s tiny laundry room – it was a tight fit but having our own kiln gave us the freedom to experiment more. We were always interested in nature and especially the sea so most of our pieces to begin with were of waves. “Eventually we decided to take everything we had down to Norman Holmes at Kaya Gallery in Southside Street. He loved our work and took everything we had. Then we were approached by a few more galleries so we decided to move to ‘bigger premises’ – ie my garage – and we bought a second kiln.” The kilns are named Mona and Beryl, after Barbara’s mum and her twin sister. “They’re 84 now and they love that we’ve named our kilns after them,” said Barbara. Barbara and Kelly then had a decision to make: Should they carry on making glass as a hobby with a few sales? Or should they turn their hobby into a full-time business. They chose the latter: “Now that we had a second n o ty n a arr 10 year w r Boilers kiln, we could make more pieces,” said Kelly. Kelly explained: “The Sidmouth suncatcher shows a large white section which depicts the billowing sails of the regatta at Sidmouth and the Bantham suncatcher was inspired by a day at that beach when the tide was coming in. Anyone who knows Bantham knows just how fast that can be – I had to grab all our stuff asap otherwise it would have been washed away.” The love of the sea with its shades of blues and greens are in many of their pieces, from trinket dishes, coasters and suncatchers to their Arathusa and Bulwark waves and their largest piece, ‘The Roller’. Some of their waves are bolted onto white boards but the majority are set on wooden plinths. The wood is collected by Barbara’s son James and crafted by husband Graham. Kelly has just started to make fins – a reflection of her love of stand-up paddleboarding, but the fins will also appeal to lovers of sharks and marine wildlife. Kelly and her mum are increasingly receiving bespoke and personalised commissions. Earlier this year, they were asked by Stephens Scown Solicitors to design and make eight Farming Awards for the Devon County Show. And they’ve just completed their first text-based piece – a letter written from one sister to another when they were little girls has been fused onto glass. Kelly said: “We really enjoy chatting with our customers and often our designs can go backwards and forwards a few times.” People can also send in their own designs. The next step is to buy a bigger kiln so they can make larger pieces. The other important glass masterpieces and thing for them is to carry on having fun and catchers loving their work. “I’ve been down to the garage in my pyjamas at 1 o’clock in the morning to start up the kilns so we can get two firings done in a day,” said Barbara. “But it’s brilliant. We’re so pleased with how everything has worked out. We never imagined things would go this well. And we’re having such a great time. Plus, we’ve learnt that there’s no end of brainstorming and decision-making that can be done over tea and cake!” Barbara and Kelly’s work will be at the Kaya Gallery Exhibition at the National Marine Aquarium from October 27 to November 1.

Emma creates the curtains and blinds every home deserves
Emma Yarham
After 12 years in the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Emma Yarham was at a crossroads. The Royal Navy was all she’d ever known, having joined up straight after graduating from Exeter University. But with her Officer’s Commission completed in 2014, which way should she turn now? She looked to her past for inspiration – and to her passions, which led to the launch of Tamar Valley Interiors in the summer of 2014: “I wanted to do something different and I was keen to do something creative,” said Emma. “The idea of becoming self-employed also appealed as I have a little girl called Jennifer. Having a business I could run from home and being my own boss suited my lifestyle. “I’d always loved sewing and I love fabric. My mum had taught me how to sew when I was young and my grandma had taught her. When I told my mum I was thinking about becoming a professional curtain maker she encouraged me all the way.” The Royal Navy was also supportive, helping Emma through her resettlement into civilian life: “The Armed Forces are very good at preparing you for life outside. I did some professional curtain and blind making courses where there was an emphasis on traditional hand sewing techniques. I was really inspired by the skills and knowledge I acquired. You start with a piece of material and you end up with something beautiful. I look at the end result and think ‘I did that’. It’s a great feeling!” Tamar Valley Interiors is run from a workshop at Emma’s home in Stoke, where she makes bespoke curtains, pelmets, fabric blinds and soft furnishings including throws, cushions and lampshades. Emma has turned one of her downstairs rooms into a sort-of show room, with curtains, pelmet and cushions which she’s made, and with wooden Venetian blinds from her newest business, Plymouth Blinds Direct. And there’s a story behind this too: “I was at a trade show and got chatting to a company which makes made-tomeasure blinds at a factory in Yorkshire and they invited me

up to have a look around. I was really impressed with the quality of their work.” Emma added: “I saw an opportunity to cover all areas of the market and offer a wider range of blind and curtain styles to customers who don’t necessarily want them to be hand sewn but are still after a high quality product.” Emma now supplies and fits the blinds and curtains through her Plymouth Blinds Direct business: “I visit customers in their Cushions, curtains, blinds and home so they can pick pelmet produced by Emma from a wide range of colours and styles. I also provide a free measuring and fitting service. The made-to-measure route offers you so much more choice than buying from a high street retailer.” For Emma, paying more attention to what you put up at the window makes a huge difference to the look of a room: “People spend a lot of money decorating their houses and often the curtains and blinds are an afterthought but they should be just as important as the colour of your paint, wallpaper and carpet. Incorporate them into your initial thoughts when deciding how to decorate a room. If you have a big window, think of it as feature wall. Pick a beautiful fabric or something that has a ‘wow’ factor. “Co-ordinating your curtains and blinds with the rest of your interior scheme really pulls the room together. Beautifully made curtains and blinds don’t just look fantastic, they’re also an investment. They’ll look great for years.” Emma is finding that the skills learnt in the forces are ideal for her new career: “The interpersonal skills I learnt in the Royal Navy have been invaluable when helping customers. I pride myself on offering a friendly and personal service. People can often be nervous of matching colours or might not have a sense of what might work. I love meeting people, listening to their requirements and helping them to create a beautiful look.” And she added: “I never thought after leaving the Navy I would end up with two businesses, both producing high quality products that look great and give me the satisfaction of being creative.” Visit Emma’s websites or Facebook pages for latest information.

BUSINESS MATTERS
Sweeping changes pay off as Stuart cleaning business goes from streng
Plymouth couple Stuart and Gail May had always talked of one day running their own business and last year they turned their dream into a reality when they left their jobs and took the plunge to launch Myhome Residential Cleaning Plymouth. And, just a year later, the couple are celebrating achieving the coveted Trading Standards approved Buy with Confidence accreditation from Plymouth City Council. The stamp of approval is only given to firms whose customers submit testimonials to the council and where customer service is of the highest standard. With a quality guarantee and a team of trained professional cleaners, Stuart and Gail have seen their client base grow so fast that they’re now taking on new cleaners and investing in a third van. So what seemed like a potential risk has turned out to be a brilliant decision. For the couple, it was a lifestyle choice as well as a business move: “After working most of our lives for other people and being managed by other people we wanted to be our own bosses,” said Stuart. “My mum and dad had a business in the Yorkshire Dales and I worked for them for years when I was younger. I saw how they ran their own business and I thought ‘I fancy a bit of that’. Both Gail and I are in our 40s, we’ve got three young children all now at school and it felt like the right time to do it.” The business is run from the couple’s home near Mount Wise Park: “We moved in here for my 40th birthday a couple of

years ago,” said Gail. “It was like a new start and it was then we decided to go for it. Stu was working for a telecoms company and I was in the care industry. Because of our shifts we never got to see each other. We don’t have that problem now!” Stuart and Gail opted to launch the cleaning business as it’s part of a national franchise that offered a package including support, training and high quality materials: “Also, I’m pretty OCD when it comes to cleaning so I’m well qualified for it,” said Gail. As it turns out, Gail and Stuart spend almost all their time managing the business from the office, although Stuart

t and Gail’s new gth to strength also visits clients as part of the firm’s customer service. They’re currently looking to expand their team to four or five cleaners, who are offered an attractive package as part of the quality control: “We’ve applied to pay the new Living Wage and we’re launching that on 1 January,” said Stuart. “We believe if you pay people properly and get them the best training, you’ll get the best staff. All of our cleaners start on a minimum of 16 hours guaranteed work a week and that grows to full time, Monday to Friday.” The investment is paying off: “Our cleaners work very hard and they do a fantastic job. They come in teams of two, they’re fully insured, DBS checked and wear uniforms. Their reliability and professionalism is a big factor behind our success. “We were busy all summer with landlords and student lets but our bread and butter really are our private customers, our regulars, the people we see every month.” Myhome Plymouth also offers a guarantee – if you’re not completely satisfied, they’ll rectify the job free of charge: “It’s all down to customer service,” said Gail. “And if a customer isn’t 100% happy we’ll go back and sort it.” The most important thing, says Stuart, is to offer a flexible service tailored to each individual customer’s needs: “I visit the customer and chat through their requirements. We will tailor a quote that fits in with their budget. We offer a weekly, fortnightly or monthly service. It could be that they want part of the house done one week and the other the next. Then there are the big spring cleans or people who want their house cleaned before they move out or are about to move in.” The firm uses its exclusively developed Tri-Colour cleaning system so that specific cleaning sprays and cloths are used for certain parts of the house, ensuring optimum hygiene. “And it’s great stuff too, it leaves the place sparkling,” said Gail. Customers range from working professionals and busy parents to older people who need a helping hand and retired couples who want to enjoy their new-found spare time – and that means not doing the housework. Gail and Stuart recently teamed up with SAJ Window Cleaners and Plymouth Rug Cleaning who they can call on if their customers need those additional services: “They do the same for us too,” said Stuart. “We call ourselves Dream Clean Plymouth! We share a Twitter account to promote out sercives, @DreamCleanPlym.” So are they glad they took the plunge last year? “Absolutely!” said Gail. “It was a ‘now or never’ time for us and we’re so pleased we went for the ‘now’ option.” Visit the website for more information or call Stuart and Gail to arrange a visit to discuss your requirements.

premises in the city, Salumi Bar & Eatery in Millbay Road. Straight away, Dave has put his stamp on the menu, with stunning modern Asian dishes sitting alongside his own take on traditional pub fare such as hamburgers, beef and ale pie and crisp ale fried fish. Dave and Australian-born Chantel opened the doors at the former Sippers pub opposite the Plymouth Pavilions just in time for the August Bank Holiday weekend. It followed a full-on summer of painting and decorating to create the ambience inside and outside that they were looking for. When Plymouth Magazine visited, it was 10am on a gorgeous sunny September morning – and the place was already a-buzz with staff in the bar and kitchen preparing for another busy day ahead. “We’ve got such a great team,” said Chantel, “and a family that likes to muck in!” Among the “muckers-in” are Dave’s mum and dad Jean (interior designer and

organiser) and Steve (property-finder and general all-rounder); his brother Rob (builder); his sister Louise (painter and decorator); his eldest sister Sarah’s husband Tony (graphic designer and logo creator); and the extended family’s children, who helped with ideas and extra hands during the summer holiday. “The family loves a project, it keeps everyone nice and busy,” said Chantel. “And the end result is great, we love it.” The 50 or so covers are on three different levels – small, cosy areas where you can just settle down and make yourself comfortable. The high ceilings and new Velux windows bring a light and airiness, while the retention of the centrepiece chimney only adds to the character. The bar area is at one end of the eatery and at the other, there are doors out to the sun trap of a beer garden. “We’ve gone for a bar and eatery so that if people just want a beer or a glass of wine or a coffee, they can,” said Chantel. “It’s drinking-friendly. And if they decide they want something to eat that’s great. Our menu has ‘lighter’ and ‘larger’ options, as Top: Tom yum king well as nibbles and desserts so there’s prawns and (above) hot chocolate tart something for everyone. The pricing is very ‘purse-friendly’ so you can come out in the midweek rather than regard eating out as just a weekend treat.” Salumi is open from 11.30am “till late” seven days a week. As well as the usual menu, there are also specials every day. Expect to find Asian-influenced dishes such as tom yum king prawns and shrimp wontons with satay noodles in a broth with lime and sesame (Chantel’s favourite), chicken laksa, and chiang mai slow cooked pork belly curry with jasmine rice. But also expect dishes like “Humble Pie” – beef braised in ale, with smoked bacon, confit shallot and gravy with creamed potatoes and “Haute Dog” – chorizo and pork sausage with avocado, chilli, crisp onion, ranch dressing and fries. Local produce is used wherever possible – such as in the Devon coast “moules frites”. Lighter dishes include crisp, ale-fried whitebait with garlic aioli, and chicken, shiitake mushroom, young coconut soup. There are also mouth-watering vegetarian options such as Moroccan roasted aubergine with honey and harissa, served with peanuts and lime yoghurt as a light meal, or a beetroot salad with crisp duck egg and avocado as a larger meal. There’s also “The Hero Sandwich” for those who think they can handle the mega-sized sarnie – or, more likely, it’s great for two to share. The “Nibble Cones” are also perfect for sharing, with a choice of monkfish scampi, spiced popcorn, chips ‘n’ curry sauce, candied nuts, and spiced falafels. “It’s a blend of East meets West,” said Chantel. “And it’s fun!” Local ales are on the pumps and there’s a selection of quality wines – including Salumi’s own branded red and white – a Merlot and a Sauvignon Blanc. For Dave – who’s received rave reviews where-ever he’s cooked in his 20 years as a chef – the new venture is just perfect. Dave, who’s Plymouth born and bred, is currently

Plymouth Philharmonic Choir soloists Catherine Hamilton, Alison Kettlewell, Christopher Lemmings and Darren Jeffery
Plymouth Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra are performing Elijah, Mendelsson’s towering Biblical epic at the Guildhall, Plymouth in December. Elijah is a particular favourite of amateur choral societies. Its melodrama, easy appeal and stirring choruses have provided the basis for countless successful performances. Elijah has many outstanding qualities: imaginative orchestration, spontaneity of the counterpoint, dramatic impetus, and the sheer beauty of many of the arias and choruses. Above all, there is no mistaking the work’s considerable dramatic impact, epitomised by the vivid characterisation of Elijah himself. The concert features conductor Christopher Fletcher and soloists Catherine Hamilton (soprano), Alison Kettlewell (mezzo-soprano), Christopher Lemmings (tenor) and Darren Jeffery (bass-baritone).

The concert is on Sunday December 6 with tickets available at www.plymouthphilchoir.org or www. wegottickets.com. Advance tickets are £17, children under 16 and students £5. Some tickets may be available on the night for £19, but it is advisable to book in advance.

Top literary names for the Internationa Best selling authors Judy Finnigan, Simon Scarrow and Matt Haig will be among the leading literary lights appearing at the 2015 Plymouth International Book Festival. Judy Finnigan is a bestselling author, television presenter and columnist. In 2004, Judy’s name became synonymous with discovering and sharing great fiction, through the Richard and Judy Book Club, where authors including Kate Mosse, Rosamund Lupton and Victoria Hislop were championed and brought to the attention of millions of readers. Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author Simon Scarrow pursued his love of history as a teacher, becoming a fulltime writer in 2005. His Roman soldier heroes Cato and Macro first stormed the bookshops in 2000 in Under the Eagle and have subsequently appeared in a number of other bestsellers including Centurion and The Gladiator. He is also the author of a quartet of novels about the lives of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte. Matt Haig suffered a breakdown in his early twenties. He now believes that reading and writing books saved his life, and that, ‘in a world trying to increasingly isolate us from our environment and our true selves, books are our route to freedom, and to each other’. His novels include the bestsellers The Last Family in England, The Radleys and The Humans. The Guardian summed up his writing as ‘funny, clever and quite, quite lovely’ while The Times and the New York Times called him ‘a writer of great talent.’ Other leading names taking part in the festival include comedian and actress Helen Lederer, singer-songwriter, composer, poet, author and publisher Thurston Moore and Bidisha, noted

author and journalist who is also a Booker Prize Foundation trustee. The 2015 festival is being held from October 15 to 22, and promises something for everyone to enjoy with a programme of readings, talks, poetry, workshops, demonstrations, music and film. Organised through a partnership of Plymouth University, Peninsula Arts, Literature Works and Plymouth City Council, and supported by Arts Council England, the Festival aims to unite local and global authors and audiences. Plymouth International Book Festival was launched in 2012, and was the first large scale celebration of international and UK writers that Plymouth has ever seen. The festival also includes a Writing For Radio workshop from the multi-talented Paul Dodgson and Edson Burton and a 1950s-style café, Chez Paulette, and for the first time, events in The House, Plymouth University’s performing arts building. While the majority of the festival events will take place at Plymouth University, a number of city organisations are also putting on related literary events. These include the Counter Artists Book Fair at Karst, a book binding and illustration workshop at Plymouth College of Art, reading events for young people provided by Plymouth Library Services, the Flash Fiction Slam at The Athenaeum and other book events at PCQ Arts and Flameworks.

George Egg, who is fresh from rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival, headlines at the Comedy Club shows on October 16 at Plymouth Albion’s Brickfields ground and on October 17 at Derriford Health & Leisure Centre. Wildly brandishing the world’s second biggest briefcase George bounds onto the stage with a unique, innovative and incredible barrage of props, jokes and top notch whimsy. Described as ‘a Tommy Cooper for the twenty first century’, a world class performer that’s sure to delight. It’s impossible to tell what George Egg is, he has to be experienced in person. Also on the bill are Danny Pensive and Penella Mellor, along with resident MC Chris Danny Pensive and (below) Penella Mellor Brooker. Danny Pensive wanders the world wide eyed with wonder, filling his diary with delightful, charming tales to share with audiences. Overflowing with charm, Danny’s infectious glee and humour have marked him out a distinctly brilliant act on the circuiy. As seen on ITV’s Stand Up Heroes, Mr Pensive has also supported touring shows of One Man Star Wars and One Man Lord Of The Rings to great critical acclaim. The third act of the evening, Penella Mellor, has made a huge impact on the circuit in a relatively short space of time. This delightfully dark mistress of mirth will leave you gasping in both shock and laughter. One of the handpicked finalists in the 2014 BBC New Comedian Of The Year awards, Penella is on the path the stardom and that path will lead her through Plymouth. The night will be hosted as ever by resident MC Chris Brooker who can now be seen peddling his comedic wares every second Sunday on Challenge TV.

Oct 6 - 29 DREAM CARGO: STANLEY DONWOOD’S ARTWORK FOR J.G. BALLARD’S PUBLICATIONS Crosspoint, Roland Levinsky Building Stanley Donwood, artist and writer, received an email from J.G. Ballard’s publishers asking if he would create cover art and design for 21 of the author’s works. In Donwood’s words: “As Ballard is arguably the finest and most peculiar novelist to work in English in the 20th century, and perhaps my favourite writer, the outcome of the email was a foregone conclusion.” In producing the cover designs, Donwood worked with scientists in their laboratories, using acids, combustion, X-rays, chromatography, and various other experimental techniques working with the instinct that J.G. Ballard regarded his writing as a sort of experiment itself. the late 1800s. The exhibition will display a selection of these, including barkcloths, weapons, shells and jewellery. As well as highlighting aspects of island life, ‘Fiji: Ocean Connections’ will show the complexity and beauty of Western Polynesian art and culture, investigating how oceans connect Plymouth with the Pacific. Operating as a fully functioning coffee bar throughout the festival, it is the perfect venue to enjoy fine coffee, listen to poetry and readings. Free admission.

I believe this is a great idea which brings out the best of creative minds.” Richard Glass added: “All participating makers are established artists in their own right... each with their own distinctive style. I am really looking forward to a week of glassmaking with a lot of buzz around in the workshop. It will be great to see what’s possible with the new equipment.” All glass artists taking part are

COASTAL MATTERS
Take up the coast path challenge Young and old alike are being encouraged to take part in a 10 mile South West Coast Path Challenge in Plymouth in October. Plymouth’s maritime history will be in sharp focus for the event on Saturday October 24, starting and finishing at the Mount Batten Centre and taking in the city’s waterfront and Royal William Yard. Devon-based TV presenter Monty Halls will be taking part in the the South West Coast Path Challenge himself in October hoping to set a new world record while protecting the coastline for future generations. Plus participants could win a GoPro Hero 4 camera worth over £400. The South West Coast Path Challenge is a new fundraising event taking place throughout October 2015, which aims to get people to walk or run anywhere from one mile to 100 miles or more, in a bid to set a world record for the number of times the Coast Path can be covered in one month. Monty, who is patron of the South West Coast Path Association, said: “Some of my happiest memories have been out running or walking the South West Coast Path, which snakes right past my house in Dartmouth. “As part of the South West Coast Path Challenge month, I’m going to sea kayak to Scabbacombe and run back to
Dartmouth, which is five miles up and down steep coastline so it’s going to be tough.” This event will help raise much needed funds for the Coast Path, which costs at least £1,000 per mile each year just to keep it open and accessible to the public. Plymouth’s 10 Mile Challenge starts with a ferry from the Mount Batten Centre and taking in the stunning seafront scenery before starting the 10 mile trek at the popular Royal William Yard before returning way to the Mount Batten Centre. The National Trust owns 185 miles of the South West Coast Path, almost a third of the entire trail. It costs the National Trust an additional £2000 per mile to care for the coastal strip that surrounds the Coast Path and maintain the stunning coastal scenery enjoyed by millions of visitors to its coastal properties every year. The South West Coast Path Association is leading on the

Every year, students and staff at City College Plymouth raise thousands of pounds for good causes, including a nominated charity which is the focus for their fundraising efforts. For the 2014/15 academic year, the college chose to support Jeremiah’s Journey - a local charity which works with children, young people and their families in and around the City to support them in times of bereavement. College students and staff donated over £4900 and 730 volunteered hours to the charitable organisation through various fundraising activities, including bake sales, raffles, sponsored activities and festive dress days. Emma Taylor, marketing & corporate relations officer, said: “City College students and staff are enthusiastic fundraisers, and it has been a real pleasure to support the important work being carried out by Jeremiah’s Journey. We’re delighted to be able to present this cheque to Jeremiah’s Journey in the knowledge that our contribution will do so much to support the city’s young people in times of bereavement.” Joanne Anning, chief executive of Jeremiah’s Journey, said: “We would like to thank the students and staff at City College Plymouth for all their hard work and fundraising efforts over the past year. “This amazing donation will really help us to continue our work with grieving children and families in Plymouth and the surrounding area.”

Tim’s 12 marathons in 12 days A Royal Naval sailor from Plymouth has taken on a demanding physical challenge of running the equivalent of 12 marathons in 12 days along the Cornish Coast for charity. Warrant Officer Tim Hamlyn, who serves on board HMS Argyll based at Devonport Naval Base, has set himself an enormous challenge in tackling 310 miles of hilly terrain in aid of The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. The keen runner said: “This has been my long-held ambition as a keen amateur runner. I have never run a marathon race, but I have done many half marathons and run big cumulative distances in training and I’m very confident it will be a rewarding experience. I love running off road and the coastal path will be beautiful. I’m just hoping for good weather as that will make a huge difference to my progress.’’ Charity spokesman Rebecca Saunders said: “We are incredibly grateful that Tim has turned this into a chance opportunity to raise all-important funds for The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. As a charity our focus for giving is on veterans as much as those who serve today. We support those in care homes who wore a uniform long ago and we support the children of those
who have worn or are wearing a uniform today.” His run began on Monday September 21 and is due to end with a section from Looe finishing with a crossing on the Cremyll Ferry to Plymouth. Anyone wanting to support Tim Hamlyn’s Cornish Coastal Challenge can make donations at the following web site link: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ TimothyHamlyn

Leading estate agents underline their waterside ambitions
Lang Town & Country’ director Gareth Forrest pictured with Chelsea Parrot (right) and Becky Ford
One of Plymouth's leading independent estate agencies is strengthening its position in the waterside property market by opening a new office in the Barbican. Lang Town & Country was created earlier this year following the merger of Town & Country Estate Agents & Letting Agents and Lang & Co Estate Agents- two of the best-known and most respected property businesses in Plymouth. The merged business already has offices in Mannamead, North Hill and Plymstock – as well as Mayfair in London – and the opening of the new office near Plymouth's waterfront underlines the success of the company. Around a fifth of Lang Town & Country's current business comes from the waterside market. The new office, which is due to open in late Autumn, is located in Notte Street and will be the base for Lang Town & Country's waterside property team, which is headed up by director Gareth Forrest. Gareth, who has more than 20 years' experience in the
50\

property market, has been involved in the sale of many of Plymouth's waterfront and new home developments during their initial construction and has handled scores of after sales within each development. He will be joined at the new office by Becky Ford who will be the Sales Manager & Chelsea Parrot as Lettings Manager. Lang Town & Country director Richard Rabin - who also has extensive experience in the waterfront market - will split his time between North Hill and the new Notte Street premises. Gareth said: "It's very much going back to our roots for Richard and I as we both started our careers in the property market in this part of the city "We chose the location in the Barbican as it provides us with the opportunity to cover an area stretching from East of Plymstock to Cornwall's Rame Peninsula in the West. "The waterside property market in Plymouth and surrounding areas is extremely buoyant and there is continuing demand for good quality houses, flats and apartments on or near the water - whether coastal, river or estuary."
Lang Town & Country's membership of the Waterside Properties Network, which has 25 offices in the UK and overseas, ensures a high level of awareness of waterside properties in the Plymouth area among potential buyers. As a member of the network, Lang Town & Country is represented at the prestigious London and Southampton boat shows providing an important showcase for Plymouth properties among the yachting and sailing community. Gareth said that an in-depth knowledge of the waterside property market was essential to ensure that vendors achieved the best price for their property. "There are well over 1,000 waterside flats and apartments in Plymouth alone - and every one offers something different. It's not all about size and location. The most important thing potential buyers are looking for is a view of the water - but even within one development the view can vary dramatically and this is inevitably reflected in the price of the property," said Gareth. "Over the last 15 to 20 years we have seen a number of new developments in and around Sutton Harbour, while more recently the Millbay and Royal William Yard have come on stream, stimulating further sales. "A lot of people are downsizing and choosing apartments for retirement and Plymouth certainly has plenty to offer to this market." He said that the market for waterside rental property also remained strong and he was confident that the new office will provide a further boost to this side of the business for Lang Town & Country. "Being right in the heart of the Barbican gives us the opportunity to provide landlords with an even stronger service than we currently offer. We certainly expect to see our portfolio of rental properties grow in the future."

Search for wallpaper leads to a dream kitchen! What started as a search for new wallpaper eventually led to a Plymstock couple having a stunning new kitchen installed. Dave and Janet Henwood were visiting one of the big DIY stores in Plymouth to look for wallpaper to brighten up their kitchen when Janet spotted a kitchen display which really caught her eye. "Our kitchen was at least 20 years old and looking a little tired," said Janet "and I managed to talk Dave into thinking about having a completely new kitchen." But when Janet checked on the internet she found some negative customer comments on the DIY store's performance. The couple decided to look at local independent kitchen companies and one of the first on their list was KF Kitchens in Faraday Mill Business Park. Dave said: "We were really impressed with the huge range of displays at KF Kitchens and there was no high pressure selling at all. Nathan Damarell, one of Janet and Dave’s dream kitchen the directors, told us to have a look around and see if there was anything we liked. "We saw a style which really appealed and Nathan kindly

arranged for us to take away some door samples so that we could see which colour and finish was our favourite," said Janet. Nathan then visited the couple's home and came up with his suggestions on layout and equipment. "Nathan was able to give us a ball-park estimate of the likely cost involved and we only had to pay a small deposit to enable the installation to be started," added Dave, a retired shipwright. Although the Henwood's kitchen is relatively small at 120 square feet, KF Kitchens have made the most of the space available. The new kitchen features the popular Cashmere coloured units with soft close doors and drawers, full length NEFF fridge and separate freezer, Neff CircoTherm oven and microwave, with separate induction hob and a builtin NEFF dishwasher. Janet said: "I wasn't sure about high level units with built-in appliances, but I was delighted that the oven and microwave could be installed at a height which is ideal for my height!" One of Janet's favourite features of the new kitchen is the easy access pull out corner LeMans shelving. Janet said: "I really didn't want to have get down on
my hands and knees to reach into the corner units so I was delighted to find out about the LeMans shelves. "Hardly any effort is required to make the shelves swing out from the cupboard and they can carry a lot of pots and pans or food items," said Janet. The final touches to the sparkling new kitchen included Silestone quartz worktops, supplied and installed by Mayflower Stone of Plymouth, Fuchsia glass splash backs supplied by Armada Glass and matching The space saving Karndean flooring. LeMans shelving unit Dave said: "We couldn't be more thrilled with what KF Kitchens have achieved. The installation team were fantastic and the whole project was completed in about two weeks." Janet loves her new kitchen and has been delighted to reignite her love of baking. "It's a wonderful kitchen and still have to pinch myself every morning when I open the door," she said. By complete coincidence Janet's brother Richard is also having a new kitchen installed by KF Kitchens, while one of her best friends has been to look at what KF Kitchens have achieved. Janet said: "My friend is moving house soon…I think she will be heading for KF Kitchens for her new kitchen too."

Mark sets the standard for bathrooms and wet rooms Residence One in Plymouth's historic Royal William Yard is home to a number of high-end design businesses including Studio One South West which specialises in bathrooms, wet rooms and tiles. Proprietor Mark Fowdon said: "Last year I had the opportunity to open up a boutique bathroom and tile showroom in Residence One and jumped at the chance. It's such a prestigious building which also houses soft furnishings and interior design showrooms, an art gallery and even a restaurant." Mark, who lives in Plymstock, originally trained as a plumber, but for more than a decade he has been supplying and installing medium to high-end bathrooms and wet rooms not only in Plymouth, but also across Devon and Cornwall. Mark not only has an extensive range of bathroom and tile displays on the top floor of Residence One, but has also installed a number of working toilets and washrooms on all floors of the Grade II listed building, which provide an ideal showcase for his skills. Having gained a huge amount of experience over many years Mark decided to launch his own business, which was originally called Bathrooms and Wet Rooms by Mark Fowdon. Eighteen months ago the move to Residence One provided the ideal time for the company's change of name to Studio One South West Ltd. Since locating his business in Residence One, Mark has benefited from an increasing number of walkin customers, but the vast majority
54\

of his work comes from personal recommendations by satisfied customers and especially those that require expert advice and a quality service. "Without sounding too arrogant, there's not a lot that I don't know about the installation of bathrooms and wet rooms and the vast choice of bathroom equipment available," said Mark. "I believe this means that I can give potential customers the benefit of the very best advice available - even if they ultimately don't use my services." Mark said: "Right from the initial free consultation in the customer's own home, we will listen thoroughly to their requirements. This information combined with our knowledge and expertise will enable us to create a design that is both functional and stunning. Using computer-generated 3D visuals we can then give the customer a complete walk around of their future room showing the actual products that we have chosen from a number of leading bathroom and tile manufacturers around the world." Mark said that the business is totally customer focused, ensuring the best result within the required budget. Studio One South West has a team of dedicated, professional tradesmen who work to the highest standards, with every installation project managed by Mark and his team. "We keep our clients constantly up to date with schedules of work and liaise closely with them so that the final outcome is invariably better
than they could have wished for." Studio One also offers a supply only service to trade or retail customers as well as a consultancy service advising plumbers, builders or other bathroom installers on the correct product selection and installation. "This can help eliminate potential problems in the installation and function of the new bathroom, reduce project schedule time and ensure the homeowner gets their desired outcome." Along with his design studio in Residence One, Studio One South West also have larger showrooms in Liskeard and Wadebridge where customers can see many more bathroom, tile and wet room displays.

TRAVEL MATTERS
Great chance to ‘Rock the
Cruise companies are always searching for original ideas to attract new customers or a select group of passengers, either by the destination area or theme of the voyage. Some of the cruise operators engage well-known speakers or celebrities to give lectures on their particular area of expertise where as others offer more leisurely activities such as cookery courses or bridge tournaments. We are obviously kept informed at the agency about all new themed cruises and a new offering called ‘Rock the Boat’ recently caught my eye. Launched by Cruiseco, a leading ship chartering company, ‘Rock the Boat’ is now making its debut in the UK after five successful years operating in Australia. Cruiseco has invited several renowned rock artists to entertain travellers for three nights on board the Celebrity Eclipse departing Southampton on September 30 next year. Featuring a star-studded line up, this cruise will set sail for Belgium and France.
Note the new VISA changes There have been some important changes in Visa regulations and requirements recently, which will affect travellers planning to visit Canada, Kenya and India as follows; CANADA - From March 15 next year, travellers from the UK with a British passport will require an electronic visa for entry into Canada by air. The visa will cost $CAD7 (seven Canadian Dollars) and will be valid for five years or the remaining validity of your passport if it expires inside this period. Even if you are travelling in transit through Canada by air you will need this visa so please check with your travel agent or airline regarding any flight you have already booked or plan to take after the March 15 2016. The website to obtain your electronic visa is www.cic.gc.ca or just ask your travel

Whilst on board, guests will not only be able to see their favourite artists perform some of their original hits but they will also have an opportunity to meet them in person. Passengers on this initial sailing of ‘Rock the Boat’ will be joined by various well-known British rock groups and artists including Gerry & the Pacemakers, who burst out of the gates with three consecutive number one UK hits in 1963; the iconic Searchers, about to celebrate their 50th year in pop music; Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, who took home six consecutive gold records and sold more records in 1968 than any other artist, including the Beatles; The Mersey Beats, who have just released a new album in 2015 and first made a name for themselves in 1963 and Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes, who are the lead singers with the Tremeloes. All of the acts will be hosted throughout the cruise by DJ Tony Blackburn, giving the whole experience a very 60s vibe. The Searchers ‘Rock the Boat’ departs from Southampton on September 30 2016 and agent for help if needed. KENYA - With effect from September 1 2015, all visa applicants will be required to apply and pay for visas online to enable entry in to Kenya. To apply go to www.ecitizen. go.ke, select the type of visa required and complete the application form. You will need to pay the fee of $51 (51 US Dollars) online and await an approval email, which will include your evisa. The document attached to your approval email will need to be printed and presented to the immigration officer upon arrival at your point of entry into Kenya. INDIA – The procedure for obtaining a visa to enter India has never been totally straightforward. Forms and passports have previously needed to be to be sent away to the Embassy and the timescale for visas to be issued has varied drastically. This has always been a disadvantage for travellers visiting to India as it meant that booking quite close to your departure date was extremely risky due to

the time consuming visa application process. However, the procedure has finally been simplified considerably and travellers can now complete the application online. To apply for your e-Tourist visa, go to www.indianvisaonline.gov.in The cost of a 30-day tourist visa is $60 (60 US Dollars). The online application process will require you to scan and send a copy of your passport in addition to separate photographs. Visas can be obtained for longer than 30 days if required and more details of these are included on the same website. I’d like to conclude with some general advice: for ALL holidays or flights you have reserved, please check the visa and passport validity requirements for the country you are travelling to and make sure you comply as regulations are continually being reviewed and changed. If you are unsure about anything, please verify the situation with your travel agent. Any efficient and helpful travel agent should also assist you with the visa application process – as far as we are concerned, it’s all part of the service. Happy Holidays! www.cornerstonevision.com

The new site, which has been developed by Plymouthbased web developers b:web, offers a clean, modern, user-friendly design, brand update and an enhanced search functionality to significantly improve customers’ online shopping experience. According to Liz Lawson, managing director of Lawsons, the new website is more closely aligned with the company’s strategic vision for growth and expansion over the next decade, and beyond. Other new functions include an easy navigation system which divides products into clear categories and the ability to further filter products by brand, colour, material and price – all to help customers find exactly what they are looking for.

In addition customers will now be able to shop on the go, safely and securely from their mobile or tablet, a feature not previously offered by the old website. “We are a long standing company with core values, however we also recognise the importance of innovating and adapting to new ways of doing business and technology,” Liz commented. “Last year saw almost a third of UK sales being completed on either mobile or tablet devices. It was important to us to adapt to this change in consumer purchasing behaviour by offering a mobile responsive site for our customers.” The website also offers another special feature – the introduction of a free click and collect service which allows customers to order online and collect from their chosen Lawsons store. The addition of this service is part of Lawsons’ ongoing efforts to enhance the availability of products to its customers and to better serve the local community. The website also includes a blog which features recipes, how-to guides and company news. The company’s social media branding has also been refreshed, whilst direct links to Lawsons’ Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest profiles, where the latest offers and promotions appear, have been integrated into the new site. “We are exceptionally proud of the new website and we are certain that it will provide our customers with a more rewarding shopping experience,” said Liz. The new website has more than 6,000 products online roughly a third of all products currently stocked by Lawsons at its stores in Plymouth, Tavistock, Ivybridge and Totnes. Lawsons was one of the first local retailers to introduce online sales, with its first website launched in the late 90s. The new website is the fourth version Lawsons have operated over the last 15 years. The project took around six months to complete and was overseen by Zoe Ashby of b:web and Andrew Pealing, operations manager of Lawsons. Zoe said: "Lawsons was one of the first companies we contacted when we opened our Plymouth operation a couple of years ago. It was a pleasure working with them on such an important project and a great example of two local companies working together."

Hair styles have come and hair styles have gone in the near quarter of a century that Chris Horsfield has worked in the industry. For the past 20 of those years Chris has run his own salon in Hyde Park Road and he’s become a well-known figure in the community. Walk through the front door of the Hyde Park Hair Shop and you can see straight away why customers keep coming back here. For a start, there’s a lot of laughing. You get the feeling that this is one big happy family involving both staff and customers. And then you chat to Chris and discover what it is that makes him tick. There are words that keep cropping up in the conversation - “community” is one of them. “Friendly” and “relaxed” are others. Put them all together and you’ve got the answer as to why his salon is so busy with regular customers who don’t go anywhere else: “We’ve got lots of loyal customers,” said Chris. “Some have been coming here since the day I opened. They’re more like friends than customers.” The salon is in a great position amongst the bustling Hyde Park shops, ideal for people on their way in and out of town and for the residents who live in the neighbouring streets: “Hyde Park is always busy and it’s a really nice community to be working in,” said Chris, who often brings his dog Bella to work with him. All four hairstylists in The Hyde Park Hair Shop team have a natural interest in fashion and style trends and aim to create the best look for their clients season by season. “We always listen to our customers to learn exactly what they want,” said Chris. “This is very important to us. We care about their hair. It’s one of the reasons why people come back to us.” The salon’s other male stylist is Rick Lester. He’s busy cutting a customer’s hair but chips in: “It’s all about the people here, it’s about our customers. We’re very laid-back, we’re family friendly and we’re genuine and caring. Our customers know that and they trust us.” Rick Lester

And our hairstylist Sarah has a flair for colouring and hair-up which works well for those special occasions such as proms and weddings.” Among the brands used and available for sale are Baxter’s of California, Beardsley, EIMI by Wella and Uevo design cube: “I think we’re quite unique because of what we offer and we are one of the few places in the UK that sells Baxter’s of California and Uevo design cube. “This is what we mean when we say that we want our customers to feel special.” The Hyde Park Hair Shop also stocks a range of Aqua de Colonia men’s cologne from Spain which would make a great Christmas gift: “It’s lovely - and people can come in and give it a try before buying,” said Chris. You’ll also find jars of jams and chutneys in the salon which Chris is selling to help a £25,000 fundraising campaign for the introduction of testing for cancer patients to see if they are allergic to chemotherapy treatment. It follows the death of a close relative of a friend, who died after suffering a reaction to chemotherapy: “If it can make a difference for people in the future, that would be great,” said Chris. The barber shop on the ground floor is staffed by Chris and Annabelle. It takes walk-ins and is open 8am to 6pm six days a week, with a late evening finish of 7pm on Fridays. Free onstreet parking is readily available. Upstairs, Sarah and Rick run an appointment system in the ladies and gents salon. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 9am until 6pm, again with late closing at 7pm on Fridays. “A POTENTIALLY LIFE-CHANGING READ!” 62\
The Plymouth Magazine October 2015
This autumn the hard-working local charity will be writing to over 12,000 supporters asking them to sponsor a light at the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit in Turnchapel during the Christmas period in memory of a loved one. For so many people this is a positive way of remembering someone dear to them, knowing that their light is bringing comfort and pleasure to the patients that St Luke’s are supporting over the festive period. Alongside the Turnchapel display, there will also be several ‘light up a life’ services in Tavistock, Saltash and St Andrew’s Church in Plymouth. Each church will hold a candlelit service giving St Luke’s supporters the opportunity to remember their loved ones and light a candle in their memory. The services at St Andrew’s Church will be on Wednesday December 16 at 2pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm Monies raised as part of the Light up a Life appeal make a significant contribution towards the cost of continuing care to over 3,000 people and their families each year, making Simon Stevenson of Thompson & Jackson a profound difference to so many Solicitors: ‘It is a local people. pleasure to be able to Simon Stevenson, private client continue our support for partner with Thompson & Jackson, such a worthwhile local Solicitors said, “Thompson and charity Jackson solicitors are delighted to be able to add to the support that our firm, and in particular our private client department, has over the years provided to St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth by sponsoring this event. It is a pleasure to be able to continue our support for such a worthwhile local charity. ” Lorna Damella, St Luke’s corporate fundraiser, said: “We are tremendously grateful to Thompson & Jackson, Solicitors for generously getting involved in this year’s events. When only 34% of our funding comes from the NHS it is community support like this that’s vital in bringing light to people’s lives wherever they need the care we provide.” Exclusive Offer - To receive a discount of £25 off the cost of making a single Will or joint mirror Wills or a single Lasting Power of Attorney please call Thompson & Jackson before January 8 2016 on 01752 665037 and quote ‘Light up a Life 2015’ to make an appointment About Thompson & Jackson Solicitors Established more than 130 years ago, Thompson and Jackson Solicitors provides a wide range of legal services to clients throughout Devon and Cornwall, including residential and commercial conveyancing, wills and probate, inheritance disputes, business matters, landlord and tenant issues, accident compensation claims, divorce and separation, injunctions and litigation. GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE Japanese Maples provide spectacular colour in the garden
Try a touch of gold So here we are in October and the garden is starting to retire for winter, but rather than bow out gracefully, a lot of our plants are choosing to go out with a bang.
By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre
For many, after a long spring and summer of playing the supporting role and backbone planting to our bright and worry about the height and spread, thinking that it will take dazzling annuals, bulbs and herbaceous perennials, now over and block out light, and not only that, but another is the time they take centre stage. As the light levels fade common concern is about the spread of their roots. and the temperature steadily starts to drops, their foliage People often worry about tree roots interfering with flushes with rich, fiery hues of reds, oranges and yellows. and damaging drains and house foundations. Well worry Now is their time to shine and provide outstanding colour not, here are three trees that are well behaved, making that will rival any flower. If you them fantastic specimens for even haven’t planted anything for autumn the smallest gardens and put on a interest and colour, don’t worry, you spectacular show and can even be don’t have to wait till next year. in shade. There is an abundance of foliage shapes and colours, from bright yellow, to pink, to green to deep plum. The leaves vary from hand shaped to feathery and come in weeping forms to uprights. There really is one to suit every taste. They like a moist soil in partial shade and do exceedingly well in pots as well as in the ground. The autumn colour varies depending on the variety, but all are equally intense and stunning, from golden yellow, vibrant orange and translucent red. They have some of the best autumn colour to be seen. The height and spread can vary depending on variety, so always check the label. The height and spread varies from 1.5m (5ft) to 4m (12ft). The third one is Betula Utilis Jacquemontii. This is a wonderful variety of the popular Himalayan birch, it offers a real winter wow factor with its snowy white, exfoliating bark developing at an early age. Catkins with shades of yellow and brown hang from the branches in the spring before the foliage turns golden yellow for the autumn. It will grow to a height and spread of 7m (21ft) by 3.5 metres (11ft). This is a tough tree which will grow in most soils and conditions. This is the time of year when grasses come into their own. They are in full flower and the seed heads dance elegantly in the breeze on long stalks that stand above the strappy or spikey foliage. The foliage also colours up well in the autumn, adding to the interest. Grasses are great for softening hard and harsh structures, plants, boundaries and straight edges. They add a touch of air, grace and elegance to the garden. Alternatively, if they are used in a minimalistic and contemporary way, they can look bold, architectural and stylish. My favourite grasses for this time of year are Unicinia Rubra, Festuca Gluaca, ‘Intense Blue’, Stipa Arundinacea, Carex ‘Prairie Fire,’ Molinia Caerulea, Miscanthus Fern Oster and Pennisetum Fireworks. Happy gardening!
Create a hasslefree outdoor space and enjoy living life outside to the full
As well as the usual autumn tidying jobs to do, it’s worth looking at some of the products which can help you spend more time outdoors and keep your garden looking good throughout autumn and winter. An artificial grass lawn provides a fantastic all weather surface all year round. During wet spells, instead of stopping the children and pets from going out on to the muddy grass, an artificial lawn will let them get outside whatever the weather. The latest generation of landscaping grasses contain a mix of green shades and brown root mass for an authentic natural look. There’s no mowing, edging or weeding to think about and with clever border planting to soften the edges and link to the space beyond, your new artificial lawn will be virtually indistinguishable
