En-suite dreams!

When Hooe couple Phil and Jackie Barnett decided their outdated bathroom needed a complete makeover they asked a number of companies to quote for the work. The stand-out choice was local family firm Dream Bathrooms, which is run by Steve Short. The couple had read about Dream Bathrooms in the Plymouth Magazine and had no hesitation in appointing them to do the work. Retired Ministry of Defence police officer Phil said: “Steve was brilliant in advising us on the best way to make the most of the space available and explained everything simply and clearly.” Much of the space in the 12 square metre en-suite bathroom was previously taken up by a bath and separate shower, which had a leak. Jackie said: “We never used the bath as both Phil and I prefer to shower so that was one of the main reasons we wanted a complete change.” Steve came up with detailed plans for the refurbishment and then helped Phil and Jackie choose stylish fixtures and fittings, including new floor tiles and wall tiles. During the two week project in May, the bathroom

was completely stripped bare - including removing a wall - to enable Steve and his team of skilled tradesmen and fitters to undertake the work.

“We had to replace some of the floorboards, completely re-plaster the room and install new wiring and plumbing,” said Steve. The Dream Bathrooms team installed a huge new walk-in shower, complete with large square rain shower head and art deco style shower controls. A range of Hacienda black bathroom units were fitted along one wall, along with a marble wash basin and granite effect worktops. A huge bespoke mirror was fitted above the units to create a sense of greater reflected space, while new downlighters added to the bright new look. A new radiator and heated towel rail were also installed. Slate grey porcelain floor tiles and mottle grey wall tiles provided an overall stylish finish to the bathroom. Phil and Jackie are delighted with the finished result. “We love our new shower, especially the rain effect shower head,” said Jackie. Phil added: “We couldn’t be happier with Dream Bathrooms in terms of the quality of their work and customer service.”

In 1620 the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth on an epic journey across the Atlantic which ultimately led to the foundation of the United States. In four years time another Mayflower will be setting sail from Plymouth as part of the 2020 celebrations. It will be a ground-breaking event as this 100 foot long vessel will be unmanned and powered purely by energy from the sun and wind. The Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship (MARS) project is being led by Plymouth-based M Subs, Plymouth University and ProMare, a maritime research charity. We have an interview in this issue with Brett Phaneuf, managing director of MSubs and one of the driving forces behind the

project. In the wake of the shock news on the proposed closure of Stonehouse Barracks, we were invited for a behind the scenes tour of the Royal Citadel, home of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. Commanding Officer Lt Col Jon Cresswell talks about plans for the iconic military fort to play an increasingly important role in the local community. Elsewhere we catch up with Nicola Hurst, Plymouth’s talented jewellery designer, who is celebrating 10 years in business and also meet a group of artists who have formed a collective which will help young arts graduates to take the next steps on their careers. Last but by no means least we also meet one of the mums who has enjoyed taking her baby to the cinema - thanks to a special initiative by the Plymouth Arts Centre. Hope you enjoy the latest issue.

FAMILY MATTERS

Bringing in baby Cathryn and Max at Plymouth Arts Centre

At Plymouth Arts Centre’s Bringing in Baby events, parents, grandparents and carers of babies can relax and enjoy a film in the cinema without having to worry about baby making a noise or two. New mum Cathryn Macey took along her baby Max, who is now 11 months old, along and shares her experiences. "Whoever came up with the phrase 'yummy mummy' has clearly never spent time with a new mum. Those early days are inevitably about puke and poo with a side order of extreme sleep deprivation. “Thankfully there are many groups designed to keep both parents and babies sane. The one event that gives parents a break and an opportunity to feel both sociable and cultured is the monthly Bringing in Baby at Plymouth Arts Centre. It has undoubtedly been the highlight of my maternity leave and I cannot recommend it highly enough if you are in need of a treat. (Which, let’s face it…you probably are!) If a trip to the cinema with a baby sounds far from relaxing to you, let me reassure you. I have been to see three films at the baby cinema and loved every one of them. The three films I have watched (Brooklyn, The Danish Girl and Love and Friendship) have also been the only three films I have actually watched since having my son 10 months ago! “I’ll be honest….the first trip, when Max was only two months old, was the most daunting. However, despite the fact the cinema was fairly busy, we were well looked after by all of the staff and the other cheerful mums and dads. “Yes, Max did cry and yes Max did need his nappy changed a few times but no one sighed or tutted and I did manage to follow the plot (Thank goodness it was simple though)! The baby-friendly staff and incredibly supportive environment are such a welcome break from the kind of reactions you unfortunately encounter in public sometimes. You know what I mean. The atmosphere is so inclusive. Whether your baby is bottle or breastfed, screams through climactic scenes or lets off a stink bomb part way through a nude scene, no one bats an eyelid. We’re all on each others’

side. And that is why I love Bringing in Baby. "The fact that the group is so positive enables you to feel comfortable to do whatever it is you need to do to get through to the end of the film. I admit it. We did miss the end of The Danish Girl but we enjoyed a quiet coffee and feed in the stylish café instead and that experience in itself felt special. "As Max got bigger and more active I worried that baby cinema was going to have to be a thing of the past. He is now a fan of trying to walk and pulling himself up on to furniture. "Despite his love of sofa surfing we did manage to make it through Love and Friendship and I was so grateful to him and the other cinemagoers who made this possible as I am a massive Jane Austen fan. "Another mum’s reaction to this accomplishment embodies the spirit of baby cinema. 'Well done,' she said, beaming from ear to ear, 'You made it.' And she was right. On our third and, most likely, final outing to Bringing in Baby we had indeed made it through an entire film without having to leave the cinema. Hurrah! The next Bringing in Baby to the Cinema event is Café Society on Thursday October 13at 11am. Tickets are £6.50. Plymouth Arts Centre also run Bringing in Baby: to the Gallery. Join our visual arts team for a short introduction to the current exhibition, meet other parents with a passion for culture and relax in the comfort of the Centre's café. Danish artist Katya Sander’s mid-career survey brings together selected works about the public subconscious.

BUSINESS MATTERS

Nicola Hurst sits in her designer jewellery gallery in Hyde Park Road and asks: “Where on earth does the time go? It’s flown by!” She is discussing her 10th anniversary at the gallery, a landmark she is celebrating by launching a new e-commerce website that will make life a lot easier for those customers who drive literally hundreds of miles to visit the gallery. And, on the day of the anniversary, 25 October 2016, she has a special “10-for-10” offer – 10% off for 10 years – on everything in her gallery. The new-look website – due to go ‘live’ around about now – comes just in time to showcase her two new collections, which locals can view for themselves by popping into the gallery. One of the new collections has just gone into the shop, with the second collection being launched between now and Christmas. Nicola has had her own business for 25 years but moved from home working to her gallery and workshop in 2006. Since then, she’s never looked back: “It’s such a great community here, it’s like being in a village. We’re all independent businesses and we’re all here for each other. “And it’s a brilliant location for customers, with lots of free parking. It’s perfect.” As well as her own hand-made jewellery, Nicola also sells pieces by selected designers from across the UK, many of them from the South West. Ten years ago, customers were less likely to go for designer pieces of jewellery, but this, says Nicola, is one of the big

10\

The Plymouth Magazine October 2016

Perfect 10 for Nicola’s Designer Jewellery Gallery! changes she has seen: “In the early days people needed to be persuaded, almost, to go for something a bit different but now it’s what customers are actually looking for. People are more aware of unique, bespoke jewellery and they like jewellery to be hand-made by a designer they can put a name to. “I get a lot of people in who are looking for a gift for their partner and through chatting about what they like and don’t like, we can choose a piece that’s just right for them. People love that sort of personal service.” In the past 10 years, Nicola has seen trends come and go. The big trend currently is for people who want to make their own jewellery, especially their wedding rings. Nicola hand-makes all of her jewellery in the workshop at the back of the gallery and it’s also where she holds her Wedding Ring Workshops and her jewellery-making evening classes. Showing people how to make beautiful jewellery is a part of the job that she particularly enjoys. Beginners and intermediate workshops are run weekly over a 10-week course and Nicola says: “It’s amazing to see the jewellery that people can make by the end of the term, using the metals or stones that they like – really stunning pieces.” The classes are for a maximum of four people and you need to book your places well in advance; Nicola is currently taking bookings from April 2017. For couples wanting to make their own wedding rings, Nicola holds an initial consultation to discuss the design they’d like before a one day private course in the workshop: “I love doing the Wedding Ring Workshops,” she said. “It’s not just a happy day for the couples, it’s a happy day for me as well. And the

BUSINESS MATTERS

feedback is lovely. The couples say that their wedding rings mean even more to them because they made them together. “We do a ‘trial run’ in the morning and they get to keep those rings, too. So they leave the shop with their wedding rings plus a second ring which they usually put on before they leave!” Most of the couples get in touch with Nicola as a result of recommendations and one couple recently travelled all the way from Bristol to make their rings. More and more people are also asking Nicola to remodel pieces that have been handed down to them: “I find these commissions very special,” she said. “People want to keep these pieces of jewellery because they obviously mean a lot to them but they don’t want them to be tucked away in a drawer. In most cases, they’re not the sort of jewellery they would

wear or perhaps they might be a bit out of date. So we have a chat about how to remodel it and then I melt down the metal and re-set the stone. “It’s lovely because they get to use the jewellery and keep the memory.” Give Nicola a call if you’re looking for something just a little bit special or if you’d like to book a workshop. You can also check the collections online, with free delivery to UK customers.

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Setting sail with the 21st century Mayflower Computer graphic impressions of the new hitech Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship

A ground-breaking plan to celebrate Mayflower 400 by sailing an unmanned hi-tech ship across the Atlantic in 2020 reaches a major milestone in October. A Crowdfunder campaign will be launched on October 24 to raise ÂŁ300,000 for the design and production of working models for the ship. World-beating marine expertise is being harnessed to develop the Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship (MARS) - a full-sized unmanned ship which will use state-of-the-art wind and solar technology to replicate the Plymouth UK to Plymouth USA route taken by the Pilgrim Fathers. A not-for-profit company has been formed by Plymouthbased MSubs - which specialises in the design and production of manned and unmanned underwater vessels - Plymouth University and ProMare, a charitable marine research foundation, to drive the project forward. The company, which is called Mayflower Autonomous Ship Limited, has a mission statement which includes: "To build an autonomous vessel capable of conducting scientific research with the endurance and reliability to operate remotely in all corners of the globe." At over 100 feet in length and weighing around 25 tonnes, the revolutionary trimaran vessel will carry on board a variety of drones through which it will conduct experiments during its voyage. After her Atlantic crossing in 2020, MARS will circumnavigate the globe, gathering valuable research data in the process, and will then be available for charter for

scientific research. The idea for the pioneering project arose from discussions between Brett Phaneuf, managing director of MSubs, and academics from Plymouth University, who conduct research into the capability and use of underwater autonomous vehicles (UAVs). Brett said: "We want this to be a project that captures the imagination of not only the public, but also students and schoolchildren, creating engagement with science and technology. "At the same time we want to generate opportunities for research and for Plymouth University students to benefit through internships and industrial placements." He said that because the project is not a commercial venture, the team were already connecting with major corporations and governmental bodies which have an interest in the development of unmanned marine craft. "There are a lot of people building autonomous boats, but MARS will be the biggest of its kind and is already attracting a great deal of interest from all around the world." Award-winning multi-hull yacht designers Shuttleworth Design are currently developing detailed designs for scale models which will be tested in Plymouth University's Marine Building. It is expected that the contract for production of the revolutionary MARS will be awarded to a local shipbuilder in the middle of 2017. Construction is expected to take up to 15 months, with fitting out completed by early 2019. This will allow extensive trials to take place during 2019 and

into 2020 ahead of the official Mayflower 400 celebrations in September. Formal Royal Navy commander Paddy Dowsett, who is project manager for MARS, said: "The Crowdfunder campaign is designed to appeal to individuals, families, through to major corporate sponsors. We will be offering a range of attractive rewards for those who join this exciting adventure." He said that MARS will be built locally and launched in Plymouth. "It is a fantastic project that will further strengthen Plymouth's long and proud maritime heritage."

ART MATTERS

Artists’ collective will encourage young talent to stay in Plymouth to further their careers Oona Wagstaff is a local artist who came up with the great idea of setting up an artists’ collective in Plymouth. Within a week of emailing six people to tell them about her vision, they became a team! She told me: “We have named the group ‘Rhizome’ which in biological terms is a continuously growing horizontal underground stem which puts out lateral shoots and roots at intervals. “Our hope is that other artists and the community at large will be positively affected by an ever growing network of artistic opportunities made available within the Plymouth area.’ I asked Oona what happened at Rhizome’s inception. She said: “The initial group began to develop back in January of this year, when some second and third year students at Plymouth College of Art decided that they needed an ongoing, supportive structure in place for them on graduating from their BA (Hons) courses in painting,

drawing and printmaking and printed textile and design. I got together with two other third year students, David Muddyman and Ildikó Hurley. We then joined forces with second year students Terry Channell and Marie Taylor to build a business case for the formation of the collective and researched a number of creative avenues in order to bring it into fruition.” Using the extensive and varied sets of skills and experiences of all its members, the group then wrote a business plan, conducted market research and built partnerships with the Plymouth community, local artists and Art Matters Plymouth College of Art. with Kerry Cole The group have managed to negotiate a partnership with the Millfields Trust in Plymouth, which has provided them with accommodation to kick-start their venture. Rhizome moved into their new accommodation on Union Street in Plymouth in July and have spent their summer further developing the collective. This has included the running of life drawing sessions for the Plymouth community, the establishment of the Rhizome Contemporary Open exhibition and the organisation of a number of events which took place during the Plymouth Art Weekender festival at the end of September. The group are currently applying to the Arts Council for funding and working with Plymouth College of art, the Millfields Trust and other Plymouth arts organisations, to establish ongoing relationships and collaborative projects. These projects aim to enhance and inspire creative innovation in critical, creative practice, enabling graduates from PCA programmes to remain in the area. I asked Marie Taylor, one of the founding Rhizome artists, why the collective was important to her. She told me: “It has given me a fantastic opportunity to start thinking now about bridging that gap when I graduate next year. There is an urgency for this type of thing to support the local art graduates as they emerge out of art school. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to let people know about something called ‘Crit Club’ which invites art students to bring their work, at whatever stage it’s at, to be critiqued in a friendly, fresh and inspirational way. “We want to change the stigma around critiques and the anxiety that is associated with them, helping to break down these barriers in a friendly environment whilst developing professional practice and boosting confidence. ‘

Restoration will enhance Royal Citadel’s offer to the community, says departing CO

Lt Col Jon Cresswell

As the MoD announces it is to sell off Stonehouse Barracks, we take a guided tour of another of Plymouth’s iconic military bases, the Royal Citadel.

Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020.” At one time, there were 113 guns in the upper part of the Royal Citadel, with 40 more at the lower level close to where Madeira Road is now. The oldest of the remaining guns was forged in 1710. It’s believed that none of the guns has ever been fired in anger; testament to the Citadel’s deterrent factor and also a sign of their limited shelf life. The Citadel was, however, hit by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz, when 17 people – gunners and family members – were killed. As well as the Citadel’s own guns, there are the ‘spoils of war’ including a French 16 pounder captured at Waterloo and one of the regiment’s own howitzers, sold to Argentina before the Falklands War in 1982 and retaken during the conflict. The old fortress holds so many stories and legends that it would take a book to do it justice. Anyone who’s anyone has visited here, including Nelson, Wellington and several monarchs. Built under the orders of King Charles II, the foundation stone was laid 350 years ago in 1666. Famously, the Royal Citadel was built with the guns not only facing seaward, but landward, too, as a deterrent to potential uprisings from the people of Plymouth, who had fought on the side of the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War. It originally had a moat and an outer wall to protect the main entrance but these are long since gone. The inner gate with its drawbridge chain remains though, and is a protected historic building. While the fort is a largely 17th century structure, the origins of parts of the site go back further than that. The Chapel dates back to 1371 and is actually a parish church, which means that local residents are able to attend Sunday Service – another of the Citadel’s little known stories. It was granted its Royal status in by King George V, after he visited in 1927 and is one of just six chapels to be bestowed the ‘Royal’ title. The Citadel also houses the remnants of the original Plymouth Fort built by Drake in 1590. The Citadel has been home to 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery since the Regiment’s return from Cyprus in 1960. It’s not just the Regiment’s national HQ (there are two other bases in Poole and Arbroath); it’s also home for over 200 of the Regiment’s 350 Commando Gunners who are based here in Plymouth. Lt Col Cresswell will be saying “au revoir” to all of this when he takes up a new posting overseas. September saw his 20th anniversary in the Armed Forces and this is his third spell at 29 Commando. As regiment CO, he is the Queen’s keeper of the key at the fort, which must be offered up to the Monarch for the duration on any visit. In November, the key will be passed on to the new CO, Lt Col Mark Dornan. “I’ll be very sad to leave here,” said Lt Col Cresswell. “But the main thing is that the renovation continues and that our outreach work grows. We might appear separated from the city by these huge stone walls, but both the Regiment and the Citadel are very much part of the community in Plymouth.” The Regiment also supports 289 Commando Troop of the Army Reserve for the people of Plymouth which parades at The Royal Citadel twice a week and new recruits are always welcome. EVEN DENTURES DECAY!

IS IT TIME YOUR DENTURES WERE REPLACED? Clinical Dental Technician Nick Rush advises when it’s time for new dentures Dentures have a life expectancy of between 3 and 7 years, so how do you know when it’s time to replace yours? Why have my dentures become loose? Well-made dentures are no more permanent than glasses. Over time the jaw bone and gum ridges can recede or shrink causing jaws to align differently and dentures to fit less securely. Poorly fitting dentures can cause sore spots from the rubbing of the acrylic against the gums which may become infected.

both the gums have shrunk and the denture has worn so no longer supports your cheeks and lips. Without support from the denture facial muscles sag making a person look older. Worn down biting surfaces on the back teeth cause the face to have a sunken appearance. Why is eating more difficult? Worn ill-fitting dentures can make mealtimes an ordeal for the wearer. It becomes difficult to chew food properly on the worn biting surfaces. This can affect your diet and also cause you to swallow too big pieces of food which can lead to longer term digestive problems in the future.

Why are my gums underneath my dentures red? This could be because where your denture no longer fits it moves all the time when you wear it which irritates the skin on your gums causing the redness.

BEFORE, Very worn down teeth and bite incorrect

Can new dentures look like real teeth and will they change my appearance?

Why is my denture fixative not working anymore? Denture fixatives are not a solution for old ill-fitting dentures. If too much fixative is used the dentures will not seat properly and the bite will not feel correct. If lots of adhesive is required, it is an indication that the ridges on your gums have shrunk or receded. Why do my cheeks look sunken? Often denture wearers find that the part of the face between their top lip and nose has sunken in. This is because

Denture teeth are supposed to simulate a natural smile. The newer denture teeth available today are made to look and feel like natural teeth rather than the very flat plastic looking teeth of the past that gave a very artificial appearance. Dentures need to have the correct height so that your face appears normal. Just think of someone without dentures and the sunken look they show. Lip support is gained by very careful placement of the denture teeth. Because Nick personally makes your dentures and fits them when in the clinic he can correct the sunken look of old worn dentures. Many a female denture wearer has commented that it is easier to put lip stick on the top lip with the new dentures made by Nick; this is because the lip is no longer curled under because of the improved support the dentures provide.

AFTER, new natural appearance and bite corrected.

BEFORE, Worn dentures fail to support the top lip

AFTER, Correctly placed teeth on new dentures support the top lip

The danger of taking a “selfie” behind the wheel According to Devon County Council’s 2014 Road Safety Year End Report, road traffic accidents involving the most serious injuries are rising and have done so for the last three years. 80% of the factors that contribute to these collisions are related to driver or rider behaviour and, when examined further, the top 10 factors reveal errors and lapses which we can control and reduce. Driving is one of the most dangerous things that people do and yet many of us don’t take it seriously enough. Using a mobile phone, even hands free,

means a driver is 4 times as likely to have an accident. Research by the RAC has shown that using a mobile phone whilst driving can be more dangerous than being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Motorists are putting lives at risk, including their own, as the craze for taking “selfies” hits the road. Taking your eye off the road, just for a second, to read an alert or take a photo can have potentially fatal results. In a recent survey, one in nine (11%), admitted to taking photos of themselves whilst driving despite warnings on the danger of using mobile phones. They also admitted to using social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. The practice of taking “selfies” whilst driving has been condemned as reckless, risky and selfish by road safety charity, Brake. Brake spokeswoman, Laura Woods, said “Using a phone in any way at the wheel dramatically increases the risk of crashing and killing or seriously injuring someone. It is worrying to see the number of drivers engaging in this dangerous behaviour, particularly young drivers who are already at a higher risk of crashing due to their age and inexperience”.

Advertorial

A ‘hidden epidemic’ - right under our feet Thousands of people in Plymouth are suffering pain and discomfort because of what has been described as a ‘hidden epidemic’.

The condition affects an estimated one in ten of the population and leads to pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. According to owner of Foot Solutions Andrew Scowcroft it can cause intense pain which in many cases severely affects mobility. Andrew said: “the symptoms include pain in the bottom of the foot, especially at the front or centre of the heel bone. The pain is often worse when first getting out of bed in the morning or when standing up after any long period of sitting”. He said the condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including standing for several hours a day, weight gain or wearing inappropriate footwear. GP’s will often recommend rest or antiinflammatory medication. In more severe cases, cortisone injections may be administered. Podiatrist Karen Scowcroft said: “Although

This diagram shows how the correct support can help to avoid excessive ‘rolling’ of the foot

this can be affective, these actions simply deal with the symptoms and not the root cause of the condition”. The technical name for this problem is Plantar Fasciitis. “The condition occurs when the foot is put under excessive strain usually due to the foot rolling inwards. This results in small micro-tears in the fascia, inflammation and

in turn pain. For many people this has the impact of time off work, reduction in sporting activities and a general disruption to their quality of life”. Andrew said that Foot Solutions provide a full assessment of the clients feet using advanced technology and supply custom made arch supports which control the movement of the foot and prevent muscle strain. “This approach, coupled with the correct footwear can provide a long term solution to the problem of Plantar Fasciitis,” he added. Recruitment consultant and enthusiastic runner Andrea Mahn had undergone a range of treatments for Plantar Fasciitis, but nothing eased the pain – until she visited Foot Solutions. “The staff were knowledgeable and attentive and they identified the problem. It was the most fantastic service I could have imagined. “Now I don’t suffer. I can do my job and my running and enjoy the experience, rather than being in constant pain. “I will never buy shoes from anywhere else again but Foot Solutions.”

Foot Pain? Knee Pain? Back Pain? The right footwear with the right arch support can very often alleviate pain in your back or knees as well as your feet. Why suffer when a visit to Foot Solutions could be the answer. We use the latest technology to fully assess your feet and can then recommend comfortable footwear and customised arch support for your specific needs. Youngsters work on ground-breaking product

Plymouth students leadi digital innovation in Hac Over 200 students from schools across Devon, including Stoke Damerel Community College, Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth School of Creative Arts, are participating in HackFest, a county-wide project for young people to come together to create product prototypes that respond to the issues of the future, led by FabLab Plymouth at Plymouth College of Art with FabLab Devon as partners. The HackFest project is an exciting new project that will culminate in the winners of the project Challenge Days attending Venturefest South West, a showcase of the most cutting edge innovation and entrepreneurship coming out of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset that will take place on October 18 at Sandy Park, Exeter. Funded by Devon County Council, Heart of the South West LEP, Plymouth Culture and Plymouth City Council, HackFest sees partners from across Devon working together to provide students from all across the county the opportunity to bring innovation to life by

designing and building prototypes of their very own products. A large group of students studying on creative Extended Diploma courses from Plymouth College of Art’s new Pre-Degree campus at Palace Court in the city centre are taking part, as well as students from The Red House. Participating students are gaining vital insight into disruptive technologies and skills to equip them for future careers, through a programme of hands-on, dynamic workshops focused on: Design Thinking; Electronics and Coding; Lean Startup models; 2D Design; 3D Design and Printing; and Laser Cutting. Dan Youlden, science teacher at Stoke Damerel Community College said: “HackFest allowed our students to develop a range of new skills throughout a fantastic day that has created a real thirst for design and development of new concepts.” HackFest is not only providing means of stimulating design and digital making among young people, mixing a range of skills from

ing the ckFest art, design, engineering, science and technology, but it will also provide a hugely valuable youth enterprise and entrepreneurship element to Venturefest South West, inspiring the next generation of innovators. Following a series of preparatory workshops in Newton Abbot, Great Torrington, Plymouth and Exeter, students working in teams will compete in a series of HackFest Challenge Days, taking place in Exeter, Plymouth and Great Torrington, competing to build the best product prototypes, in response to social issues of the future, through sustainable design and making. The ‘winners’ of the HackFest project will be given an opportunity to showcase the products they have designed and built during the HackFest Challenge Days, at Venturefest South West, within the Innovation Showcase. Possibly the most exciting part for students will be pitching their prototypes and ideas to investors, innovators and entrepreneurs, hungry to develop new talent and support tomorrow’s digital leaders.

HackFest Project Team Leader, Oliver Raud, from Plymouth College of Art, said: “We’re very pleased with the success that HackFest has met already and it has been an amazing experience watching students aged 13 to 19 coming together from across the county to learn digital skills that will help them to succeed in tomorrow’s workplace. I can’t wait to see the solutions that they come up with to the social issues we’ve highlighted in the HackFest Challenge Days. Seeing this kind of digital innovation and forward thinking in the South West shows just how much our students can achieve when they’re encouraged to embrace design, creativity and new digital technologies like the equipment housed in our Fab Labs.”

The mortgage market can be a real minefield, which is why more and more people are using specialist mortgage brokers like Jan O'Neill. Jan established her company Jan O'Neill Mortgages in Mutley Plain three years ago. She had worked for leading financial advisers for more than 20 years, but in 2013 decided to set up her own business. "The economic environment was still very challenging at the time and the Mortgage Market Review, which was implemented in 2014, represented some of the most fundamental changes in the mortgage industry," said Jan. Despite this Jan has seen her business expand steadily over the last three years, resulting in the recruitment of three staff, including an additional mortgage adviser. "Most of our business comes from long-standing clients I have worked with over the last 20 years, as well as personal referrals and recommendations," said Jan. Jan is fully qualified as a mortgage and protection adviser and specialises in lifetime mortgages. She also advises on family and business income protection and all types of insurance products, including life insurance, critical illness insurance, buildings and contents insurance. The company is also accredited by Trading Standards 'Buy with Confidence' scheme, which requires organisations to meet exacting standards of customer service. Jan O'Neill Mortgages is a member of Intrinsic Financial Services, a national network of financial advisers, which offers support, training and products to advisers all over the UK. "The financial services industry is highly regulated and we are fully authorised as a whole of market mortgage adviser, which involves rigorous regular assessment and continuous professional development. "There is such a wide range of mortgage and insurance products available now that we are constantly expanding our knowledge and experience in this sector.

FINANCE MATTERS

the mortgage minefield "The mortgage market is extremely complex and mortgages are something you have to be working on day in and day out, because lenders are launching new products all the time, as well as constantly revising their lending criteria. "It is true to say that since the Mortgage Market Review two years ago, lenders are much more demanding in terms of the information and evidence they require. "The review was designed to ensure borrowers can prove affordability, even in the event of a rate rise, and those extra checks have understandably increased the detail required and also affected application times. "There is a huge amount of background work involved in putting forward a mortgage application on behalf of a client, far more than most people realise. "We have to ensure that the information provided will meet the needs of the particular lender involved, to give the application the best chance of succeeding," she added. "We deal with literally scores of lenders and are able to offer completely impartial advice, taking into account the specific needs of our clients and the requirements of the lender." Jan said that many couples over the age of 55 now face many choices in planning for retirement, particularly with lenders willing to extend mortages beyond age 70, even up to 85 in some cases. "There are also a lot more choices for first time buyers with schemes such as Help to Buy and Shared Ownership and there are190x133 likely to be similar initiatives launched the future. Pemros AD_Sept 2016.qxp 08/09/2016 14:29in Page 1 "It means that ensuring you receive the best advice is more

important than ever," she added. "I want my clients to be happy because they trust my recommendations." Jan, who has won many awards for her work in financial services, is proud of the fact that she has been able to create new employment opportunities in the industry since setting up her own company. Her team consists of Alex Dunn, who joined the company last year as a mortgage advisor, personal assistant Catherine Reed and Kerry Hope, who looks after marketing, promotion and business development. Also part of the team is Liz Fraser, a para-planner, who is based outside Plymouth. She has worked for Jan for a number of years and assists with the preparation of mortgage applications. As well as being passionate about her business, Jan is also enthusiastic in her work for local charities and community organisations. She is a member of Roborough Rotary Club and a trustee of Relate Plymouth. The company has also helped disadvantaged children by supporting Circus Starr, supported the relaunch of the Plymouth and West Devon Branch of the Natural Childbirth Trust Bumps and Babes group and has made donations to Moor Trees for the planting of trees, in recognition of the huge amount of paper used in the industry.

The Plymouth Magazine October 2016

As part of the ‘spring clean’ of their business, they left their previous nationally-owned franchise during the summer to launch their own firm, PlymClean. And wow, what a start they’ve had! “August was our record month,” said Gail. “Changing to our own company has increased the flexibility we can offer to our customers and we’re looking to grow even more in the months and years ahead.” Throughout the rebrand, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed – and that’s the growing number of both staff and customers. In the past year, they have increased their staff from three to eight and have doubled their vehicle fleet from two to four. They now have approaching 100 regular domestic customers, on top of their office and landlord portfolio, a pretty rapid growth considering their initial launch was only two years ago. The reason behind the success is crystal clear, says Stu: “We are a premium cleaning service and we tell all our customers that they will experience the difference with us, which they do.” Stu visits each new customer and draws up a cleaning regime that is tailor-made just for them: “We chat with the customer over their specific requirements and offer them a fixed price for the job rather than work on an hourly rate. Whether it’s a fortnightly or a monthly clean, they know all the work will be done on time and to the highest standard. “Having our own, employed staff and our own vans means we can offer a reliable service. Our customers don’t have to worry about us not turning up. And all of our cleans are done by teams of two because it’s more efficient for the customer and it’s also better for our staff, who are absolutely brilliant and a big reason for our growth,” he added. PlymClean uses a three colour cleaning system to prevent

cross contamination: magenta cloths and bottles for the bathroom and wet rooms; green for the kitchen and utilities; and blue for the living rooms and bedrooms. Among their clients are Royal William Yard landlords Urban Splash, rental accommodation landlords who require a deep clean before new tenants move in, holiday accommodation owners, and construction firms, who want their new builds looking spick and span before the decorators come in and again, when it’s time for the properties to be put on the market. Gail said: “We’ve built up a trusting relationship with our accommodation clients so they’re happy for us to collect the keys from the agents, clean the property from top to bottom and then return the keys. It saves them a lot of hassle.” But the core of the business remains the domestic customers who book regular fortnightly or monthly cleans. Others simply want a one-off ‘blitz’ or an annual spring clean. Stu keeps in regular touch with the customers to make sure they’re happy with the service: “We regard the personal service that we offer to be very important and it’s one of the reasons we have such good reviews online, why customers stay with us and why they recommend us. After our first clean for a client we will ask them for feedback to make sure our service came up to their expectations.” Where a recommendation is taken up by a new customer, both they and the referrer get £20 off their first or next clean.

PROPERTY MATTERS

Plymouth property put on the map by Lang Town & Country Plymouth properties have been showcased in London and Southampton, thanks to the team at Lang Town & Country, one of the city’s leading independent estate agencies. Gareth Forrest, director of the agency’s Waterside Homes branch in the Barbican and his colleague Becky Ford attended the Southampton International Boat Show between September 16 and 25, which attracted over 100,000 visitors. Lang Town & Country, as members of the Waterside Properties Network, were the only agents from the city to attend the event - which is rated among the top five boat shows in the world. Gareth said: “The Waterside Properties Network is represented by estate agents in prime coastal, river and estuary locations, which enables us to reach potential buyers from all over the country. “We were the only agent advertising properties from the Plymouth area at the Southampton International Boat Show and we had some very positive discussions with people who are looking to relocate to Britain’s Ocean City. “It was the fourth year that we attended the event and we are confident that we will will have some good news for clients as a result. “We have seen over those four years the positive effect that the improved marketing of Plymouth as Britain’s Ocean City has had on potential buyers. Interest in the city has increased year on year and there is growing demand from the yachting fraternity for property in Plymouth.” Earlier in the month staff from three of Lang Town & Country’s branches in the city travelled to London to spend a day at the Mayfair Office Group, in the heart of the capital. Andrew Genge, who works at the Plymstock branch, Olivia Boulting, from the Mannamead branch and Becky Ford from the Waterside branch, were able to display a large number of

Plymouth properties at the Mayfair Office Group’s premises in Thayer Street. Lang Town & Country is part of the Mayfair Office Group, which has over 300 independent estate agent members all over the UK and 150 more in North America and Australia. Olivia said: “It was my first visit to the Mayfair Office Group and it was good to find out more about the network of estate agents here in the UK and other parts of the world which are part of the Group. “We were able to advertise Plymouth properties in the window during the day and also contact clients to progress transactions.” James Clarke, managing director of Lang Town & Country said: “Although we are firmly based in Plymouth, as part of the Waterside Properties Network and the Mayfair Office Group, we can provide clients with valuable exposure outside the city. “The London Day event was an important opportunity for our three staff members to understand how the network operates and the benefits of being part of a national and international organisation.” The busy September schedule followed a record month for Lang Town & Country’s Mannamead branch. James said: “Inevitably there was a lot of uncertainty about how the property market would react to the Brexit vote, but I’m pleased to say that we have experienced a very positive response. “We completed nearly 30 transactions in August through the Mannamead branch, which is the highest we’ve ever achieved in that month. Traditionally August tends to be relatively quiet because of the holidays - but that was not the case this year. “We were extremely busy throughout the whole month and all of our branches achieved positive results,” he added.

“Everything seems to have calmed down and the recent interest rate cut has also helped the situation. However, there is still not enough property coming on to the market to meet the demand which means properties are moving reasonably fast because there are still plenty of potential buyers out there.” James said that the measures taken to dampen the buy to let market were definitely having an impact. “Investors have pretty much disappeared because of the stamp duty changes which were introduced earlier this year. This has led to a greater choice of properties for first time

buyers, who are benefiting from incentives, such as the Help to Buy scheme.” He said that a development of new homes in Tamerton Foliot was benefiting from the Help Buy equity loan scheme. The Hilltop Heights development involves 12 three-bedroom homes being marketed at £199,500. “Potential buyers are required to pay a deposit of just 5% equivalent to £10,000 – and are then eligible for a 20% equity loan from the Government which can be repaid at any time or on the sale of the home. “These figures mean that the buyer only has to secure a 75% mortgage from a bank or building society, which is a very attractive proposition,” added James.

Confidence returns after Brexit Latest research by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has revealed that property prices in the South West have risen again. The August Residential Market Survey confirmed that confidence is starting to recover following the immediate reaction to the EU Referendum. Property price expectations in the South West suggest a growth of around 2% in the coming year. A spokesperson for the RICS said: “Brexit worries seem to have passed by with no adverse effects. There are clear signs that the housing market is settling down after the initial surprise of the outcome to the EU referendum. “Buyer enquiries did dip again in August but only modestly, and more significantly, sales expectations are beginning to edge upwards once again. It is likely the swift response from the Bank of England, both in terms of the lowering of the capital buffer and the cut in interest rates, has played a role in helping to support confidence. “The more assured mood is also reflected in some of the longer term RICS indicators although this in itself could serve to re-ignite ongoing concerns surrounding affordability with five year projections for both prices and rents in the latest survey back to their highest level since May.”

KITCHEN MATTERS

Classic Victorian elegance with a 21st century twist When Mark and Alison Ashwell moved to their detached Victorian home near South Brent, one of their priorities was to install a new kitchen, reflecting the era in which the property had been built. The property previously had a separate kitchen and breakfast room which they decided would work better as one large open plan space. Local builder Martin Gould was commissioned to carry out the major structural work and install underfloor heating and create the space for the new enlarged kitchen. Alison, a retired teacher, said: “We knew what type of kitchen we wanted, but as relative newcomers to the area we had no idea which kitchen company to choose. “Martin strongly recommended KF Kitchens in Plymouth as he had seen the quality of their work at a previous job.” The couple visited the KF Kitchens showroom in Faraday Mill and were immediately impressed with the huge range of kitchen styles available.

They discussed their requirements with the KF Kitchens team Nathan and Derinda Damarell and fellow director Simon Rice – and began working on design ideas. “I showed them pictures of the sort of kitchen we wanted and then Simon came out to measure up so that computerised designs could be prepared. “I am quite hard to please but Derinda was extremely patient with me and accommodated my ideas and suggestions. We spent quite a lot of time finalising the designs on screen and the result was fantastic,” said Alison. “What they have done brilliantly is taken classic Victoria styles and created a completely bespoke kitchen incorporating everything we wanted. “We cannot fault the quality of their workmanship and their fitter Kevin Drewery was absolutely awesome.” The Ashwell’s spacious new kitchen features units painted in soft grey with antique bronze handles and knobs and white Unistone worktops in Carrara Letano. A centrepiece island accommodates a breakfast bar and features a contrasting Colonial White granite worktop with

TRAVEL MATTERS

Andrea James pictured with Victor and Anthony Goord

Top marks for the Peter Goord team Staff at Peter Goord Travel in Plymouth are celebrating after scoring highly in a 'Mystery Shopper' feature in one of the industry's leading trade magazines. Travel Weekly's Mystery Shopper visited three travel agents in Plymouth in August asking for help and advice on an allinclusive family holiday during next year's summer holidays, with a budget of £4,250. The visit to Peter Goord Travel resulted in a score of 97% one of the highest scores by any travel agent this year. The Travel Weekly Mystery Shopper was served by Andrea James, who has worked for Peter Goord Travel for 13 years. She specialises in long-haul and tailor-made bookings and also books a lot of honeymoons. The Mystery Shopper's report on Andrea's customer service was as follows: "I was acknowledged and greeted straight away by a friendly and helpful agent. "She was enthusiastic about my trip and seemed eager to find me the best holiday. I was asked lots of questions and the agent seemed to know the destination well. "I was given good advice, backed up with brochures to take away. The agent gave me four quotes, ranging from £4,072 for the Sentido Pearl Beach to £4,690 for the Stella Palace. The agent didn’t try to close the deal, but instead encouraged me to return after speaking to my family. "I couldn’t think of anything that would have improved my visit to this agency." Travel Weekly commented: "Our Mystery Shopper uses

a rigorous scoring system, rating everything from the appearance of the shop and its staff, to customer service, knowledge of the destination and its hotels, and the quality of the holiday recommendation offered. "It's a tough test for any agency and taking the top spot is a coveted prize within the UK travel industry, reflecting the hard work and dedication of a strong sales team which clearly puts its customers firsts." Andrea said: "I really can't remember who the mystery shopper was - we always endeavour to give every customer the very best service and information to help them find the best holiday solution. "I have visited Crete on a couple of occasions and was confident about the holiday options which I offered," she added. "Because they wanted an all-inclusive holiday I concentrated on finding the hotels which offered the best quality in terms of accommodation, food and facilities." Anthony Goord said: "Andrea is a very experienced member of staff and although she was the one singled out for special praise, the exceptionally high score achieved reflects the quality, knowledge and professionalism of the whole team here at Peter Goord Travel." Three years ago Peter Goord Travel also top scored with a 95% rating by the Travel Weekly Mystery Shopper.

Did you know that a whopping 26 per cent of heat loss in our homes is through the windows? And that's when they're closed! What a waste of energy - and money. The good news is that installing energy efficient glass doesn’t mean having to replace the frames. Plymouth family firm We Do Windows say that in the majority of cases it’s only the glass that’s failing and this can be replaced using one of the UK’s most energy efficient glass at a fraction of the cost. The Millbay-based firm was set up by father and son Paul and Seb Treglown seven years ago. Seb’s mum Louise runs the office, while his good friend since childhood, Ross Northey, works alongside him as a fitter. With colder days and nights on the horizon, Seb advises that this is the perfect time to replace old and failing double glazed units. The most obvious signs that you’re losing heat are windows that have steamed up or 'blown', have internal condensation and, of course, cold spots and draughts. We Do Windows use Planitherm Total + glass – one of the most efficient glazing products available on the market. Seb explained: “It’s designed to reflect radiated heat back into the room rather than escaping out through the glass. At the same time, the glass captures natural sunlight from outside, making the room brighter and warmer. “A lot of people think that double glazed units are all the same, but they’re not. Planitherm Total + is at least 25% more efficient than most double glazing, which I think you’ll agree, is quite a significant amount. “Another big selling point is that it can significantly reduce internal condensation, which at this time of year in a damp climate like ours, is a major benefit. For many this can mean no more mopping up pools of water on the sills every morning!” And it’s not just the Planitherm glass that can make a difference to the warmth and comfort of your home. The traditional aluminum spacer bar on the edges of the unit has been overtaken by new technology, too: “We use a product

called Thermobar, an energy efficient alternative,” said Seb. “This is important because around 80% of heat loss through the windows is lost around the edges.” As well as installing energy efficient glass, We Do Windows offer a wide range of double glazing repairs and services including locks, hinges, handles, catflaps and more. All of the firm’s glazing products and replacement hardware are guaranteed. For added peace of mind, We Do Windows is an accredited 'Which?' Trusted Trader and is also listed on Plymouth City Council’s 'Buy With Confidence' scheme. The firm celebrated its seventh anniversary in September and Paul says that business has continued to grow year on year – and is currently growing faster than ever: “Recommendations and word of mouth have been the biggest driver of business,” he said. “And people who’ve had one room done often come back to us to upgrade other windows in the house. It’s all down to customer service, which is very important to us. “One of the nicest parts of the job is the feedback we get, when people tell us how pleased they are with the new glass and that they wished they’d had the work done sooner.” This time of the year is always busy, as homeowners carry out improvements in time for winter: “People are becoming more aware of draughts now that the temperature is dropping,” said Seb. “The fact is that windows that were installed 10-20 or so years ago will probably not have the latest energy efficient glass.” And he added: “You can still benefit from new glazing products and ‘green technology’ without the expense of replacing the frames; saving you money and keeping you warm this winter.” Give We Do Windows a call for a free no-obligation visit to your home.

Floating hats, ‘bespoke’ dockyard confetti and a mad dash to the hospital - just a few of the tales of wedding days past. When the Duke of Cornwall Hotel contacted couples who’d celebrated their weddings at the venue and asked if they wanted to attend a very special gathering, literally dozens of them replied to say: ‘We do’. Of course, setting a date and a time for everyone proved tricky (a bit like organising a wedding!), but approaching 20 couples made it to the event in September when, over a Devon cream tea, memories were shared and photo albums flicked through. The event, in the hotel’s Hayward Room, brought together couples who’d held their wedding receptions at the Duke of Cornwall over a period of almost 60 years. Here are just a few of their stories: Colin and Jill May tied the knot on January 17, 1959: “We were married in a Nissen Hut because after the war, that’s where the register office was in Plymouth,” said Colin, who served in the Royal Navy. “It was blowing a gale that day and we’d decided to start our honeymoon with a night at the Edgcumbe Arms. We got on the Cremyll Ferry and Jill’s hat – the one she’d worn at the wedding and the reception – flew off and headed off down the river. The boatman managed to hook it out but it was obviously ruined. It was very funny and I burst out laughing – but the marriage nearly ended there and then! No such worries – 57 years later and Colin and Jill are still happily married and living in Plymouth. Michael and Christine Eascott and John and Carole Eascott: Brothers Michael (retired fireman) and John (retired police officer) both held their receptions at the Duke, in 1966 and 1969. Christine brought their reception invoice to the event: “There were 49 people and we had a roast dinner, the wedding cake, flowers and a three-piece band and the bill came to £92 pounds, eight shillings and sixpence!” Carole recalled that after her wedding, they went straight

Couples return to the Duke to share happy memories up to the hospital to visit one of her friends who should have been a bridesmaid but missed it because she needed an emergency thyroid operation: “I went into the hospital with my wedding dress on!” John, meanwhile, has a different memory: “Argyle won that day. We got on the train to go to London, where we were starting our honeymoon, and the supporters were on the train, together with a load of toilet roll which supporters used to throw in those days!” Anthony and Marion Banbury were married in 1965, so last year celebrated their 50th anniversary. Marion worked at Devonport Dockyard at the time – which was great when it came to having ready-made confetti: “I worked on the punch card machines to calculate the men’s wages and these tiny pieces of paper would drop into the bin. We’d save them up for whenever anyone got married and it was used as confetti.” Mike and Val Hutchinson were married in March 1968 – despite her parents’ reservations about the match: “I was 16 when I met Mike and he was 18. We got engaged when I turned 18 but my parents wanted me to wait until I was 21 before we got married. In fact, they weren’t happy with me

Where there’s a Will… Making a Will is a task most people don’t look forward to doing and it often drops to the bottom of their ‘to do’ list. At Wolferstans we make the process of making a Will as friendly and straight forward as possible. There are two main parts to a Will: who is going to sort everything out (‘your executors’) and who is going to receive your estate, or a share in it, when you die (‘your beneficiaries’). You should fully trust your chosen executors and they must be at least 18 years old. If you are appointing more than one executor, will they work well together? Are they capable of doing the job? Are they likely to fall out? Do you want to burden your loved ones with the task of applying for Probate and administering your estate when you die? You might therefore consider appointing a professional executor such as your solicitor to do it for you. The advantages in appointing a solicitor include them being able to apply for the Grant of Probate more efficiently and ensure that all the tax reliefs due to the estate are claimed. A solicitor is often appointed as an impartial person to act alongside family members or friends. Many

people believe that if you are an executor then you cannot be a beneficiary also – this is untrue. Deciding how to distribute your estate when you die can be a difficult decision for many. Do you wish to leave a gift to charity? There might be a charity which has helped either you or your family during your lifetime? – a gift to charity is not subject to inheritance tax and can help reduce the size of any inheritance tax bill. Do you wish to make a monetary gift to someone i.e. £500 to a niece or nephew? Do you wish to leave a specific piece of art or jewellery to someone? If you no longer own that specific item when you die then the gift fails. Are you making provision for everyone you should in your Will? We will advise on potential claims that could be brought against your estate, either by family members or dependants. ‘The residue’ - once the deceased’s debts, expenses and the gifts contained within the Will have been settled then the balance is often known as the ‘residue’. Is the residue going pass to your husband, wife or civil partner outright or into trust? If it

www.wolferstans.com

52\

The Plymouth Magazine October 2016

passes outright and the survivor meets a new partner or remarries then the inherited assets could end up in the hands of the new partner/spouse or their family. Trusts are good for retaining control of your assets. If you have children and grandchildren at what age would you like them to be before they inherit? Do you have a child or grandchild who is disabled? If so then we can advise you on what type of trust would be best to hold their inheritance. It might not be in the best interests of your child or grandchild to receive their inheritance at a set age. Instead it is held on trust so that the trustees decide when they seem sensible enough to receive their inheritance. This will also give the beneficiary incentive to study and work hard (and not spend all of their inheritance on fast cars and lavish parties!). We provide tailored advice on what sort of trust would be best for you and your family looking at your individual needs and the tax implications. We also provide inheritance tax advice. Do you own foreign assets, for instance a villa in Spain? The introduction of the EU Succession Regulations last year means people who own property abroad should

be reviewing their Wills. We can advise on how foreign assets pass when you die and if it is possible to deal with that particular asset in your English Will. Our Wills and Trusts Team are accredited members of the Law Society’s Wills and Inheritance Tax Quality Scheme. We also have full members of Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE). If you would like to make an appointment to discuss making a new Will, reviewing your current Will, inheritance tax or trust advice then please Gemma Smith on 01752 292260 or gsmith@wolferstans.com. We like to see our clients face to face and so an appointment can be made to meet with us at our North Hill office or Plymstock branch. getting married at all, they said that we were too young and it wouldn’t last. I was 20 when we got married – and here we are, 48 years later!” There was an amazing coincidence when two of the couples got chatting – and it emerged that they’d both tried to book the same wedding day! Leila Nottage, director of marketing at the Duke of Cornwall, explained: “One couple wanted to get married on

the bride’s birthday but when they rang the hotel they were told ‘unfortunately that date is already booked’ so they had to re-arrange for the week before. This couple ended up sitting on a table with the couple who took their wedding date! What are the chances of that?!” “It was such a lovely afternoon,” said Leila. “We have a unique history here and our wedding couples and their stories are a big part of that.”

The Plymouth Magazine October 2016

For most of us, the loss of a loved one is probably the most stressful and upsetting time we’ll go through in our lives. The task of immediately organising the funeral with a firm of undertakers can, in some instances, feel completely overwhelming. The last thing you want right now is the unpleasant experience of having to deal with an impersonal ‘one funeral fits all’ firm. Wyatt Brothers Funeral Directors in Durnford Street, Stonehouse, are different. They’re a family firm that offers an independent, caring, personal yet professional service that will ease you and your family through this difficult time. The Wyatt brothers are identical twins John and James and they entered the business after being brought up in a family that was well used to a caring environment: “Our father was a country clergyman,” said John. “So for me, it’s the pastoral role of the job that I enjoy the most and that I feel is so important. “I’m very much a people person and I’d like to think that’s my particular skill, recognising the dynamics within a family and understanding what their needs are. It’s always going to be an upsetting time but talking about a loved one can also be helpful and uplifting,” he added. John and James began work as undertakers at an early age, when they learnt that laughter can also be a huge help at times of loss: “When we were 16, James and I used to help a local undertaker as coffin bearers. We’d be at the front and being identical twins, it always raised a smile.” The brothers are joined in the firm by office manager Cassie Knapman and her son-in-law, funeral director Marc McClelland, making the company even more of a family affair. John explains their approach as “informal” during the initial meetings: “We want to minimise the stress involved as much as we possibly can, so we are friendly and relaxed during these meetings and we find that people really appreciate

it. We’re not pompous, that doesn’t help people to feel comfortable at all. “I offer to meet the families in their own homes to discuss the funeral arrangements, rather than at our offices – although our main office is actually set out as a lounge to make any visit as comfortable as possible. But people are more comfortable in their own homes. They’re more likely to want to chat and we can get a much better picture of them and their loved one, so that the funeral is individual and not like an ‘off the shelf package’. After listening carefully, we are then able to offer choices to suit their individual requirements. “We believe that every funeral is a unique tribute for the family and we guide families to say their farewells in the manner most appropriate to them and their loved one’s memory. And we ensure that the day passes with dignity and reflects the wishes of families and their loved one. “Ultimately, we’re here to take on all the responsibility,” he added. Wyatt Brothers offer six fully inclusive funeral services that cover crematorium disbursements, starting from £1,995. The firm also offers bespoke options. John said: “People are

forever being told in the news that funerals now cost in the region of £7,000 or more and that’s not true, certainly not here in the South West. “It is possible to pay that amount if you wish John, dad Martin and James but the choices we offer are such that it is also possible to have a dignified funeral for less than £2,000. “Affordability is essential,” he added. “Morally, everyone should be able to have a funeral at a reasonable price. We actually quite often advise people when we think they’re considering an option which goes over and above affordability for them.” The firm can also suggest florists, places of worship for all faiths and independent or humanist celebrants as well as venues to celebrate the life of your loved one. And they can also help those who’ve lost a partner and who now fear being lonely by suggesting places which offer socialising opportunities. Wyatt Brothers Funeral Directors are available 24-hours-aday all year round.

GARDENING MATTERS

Pots of colourful Now that we are in the mist of autumn, our summer hanging basket and pot displays will be looking tired and be in need of refreshing.

By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre

There are lots of plants you can use for autumn and winter displays that will look great until spring. There’s no need to stick to just winter pansies, there are a whole host of hardy, evergreen plants that can be used. Calluna vulgaris ‘Dark Beauty’, more commonly known as Scottish heather is a great plant to use in baskets and tubs at this time of year. Its deep magenta flowers and bright green foliage really do bring warm and cheer into the garden as the days get shorter. It belongs to a group of heathers known as bud bloomers: which means they Calluna vulgaris ‘Dark produce brightly coloured flower buds that never Beauty’ fully open and because they never fully open they can’t be pollenated. This in turn means that the flowers don’t fade, as it’s the pollenation of the flower that causes it to fade and drop off. Calluna ‘Dark Beauty’ holds its flowers for a long time, and stays looking good right throughout the winter. They are easy to look after, provided you give them full sun and a well-drained soil. They do prefer an acidic soil, but for they will be fine in multipurpose whilst in the container or basket. It can be planted into acidic soil in the ground in spring. Cyclamen hederifolium They are compact growers, growing to a height of

20cm (8ins) with a spread of 35cm (13ins). To keep them bushy and compact, give them a trim after flowering. A great little plant that is extremely useful at this time of year for filling in gaps is Cyclamen hederifolium. It is a perennial that flowers throughout the autumn with typical cyclamen flowers in pink or white and has attractive heart shaped foliage that is marbled with white. Unlike bedding cyclamens, this is a guaranteed hardy and an extremely tough plant. It likes to grow where other things struggle to grow. It prefers a shady location, ideally at the base of shrubs and trees and it likes a well-drained spot. It will grow in full sun, if kept a bit moister. It reproduces quickly and forms lovely carpets of foliage and flower in the autumn as everything is dying back. Use them in your pots and baskets, and when they finish flowering, pop them into the ground in those areas where everything struggles to grow and they will flourish. The flowers are delightfully scented and are a great source of late season nectars for bees. Traditionally the trailing plant used in winter baskets and tubs is ivy. Ivy has always been the go to plant, because it cascades elegantly out of the sides of containers, is evergreen, very hardy, easy to grow and has green, gold or silver variegated foliage. There are a few plants that are just as tough as ivy, just as easy to grow, will trail just as well and in my opinion are even more attractive than ivy and they even have the added bonus of flowers. Ajuga, Lamium, and Vinca make great substitutes for ivy and will continue to look great well into the spring. Ajuga is an evergreen, ground covering plant that is extremely versatile. It will grow well in full sun as well as shade. It is drought tolerant and very easy to grow. It generally has dark, chocolate coloured leaves, but is Ajuga Reptans available in lighter, pink and cream variegations. It produces spikes of bright blue flowers in spring and summer. It isn’t fussy about soil and will pretty much grow anywhere. It grows to a height of 15cm (6ins), with a spread of 1m (36ins). It contrasts particularly well with reds and oranges. Lamium is a great foliage plant; the leaves are either silver or green Lamium Orchard Frost with some golden variegation. It flowers in the summer months with pink or white flowers that are great for the bees. If planted in the ground, it forms an evergreen carpet that lights up the ground and can really brighten up otherwise dull areas. In baskets and tubs, it will gently cascade over the edge, creating a contemporary, beautiful look. It combines well with whites, pinks and purples. It copes well with a wide range of conditions, but looks particularly good when grown in shade. It grows to a

height of 15cm (6ins) with a spread of 60cm (2ft). Vinca is the closest looking to ivy, but it has the advantage of attractive, fairly large, star shaped mauve flowers in the early spring and throughout the summer. It has an exceptional trail on it and looks exquisite pouring out of hanging baskets. It’s better suited to baskets than pots as its trail can be too much for pots and can spill out Vinca Illumination across the flower. The more decorative varieties have golden or silver variegated leaves and the most attractive variety is one called Vinca ‘Illumination’. The centre of its leaves are bright golden, edged with green. It will really brighten up any hanging basket on the dullest of days. Vinca is exceptionally easy to grown ad will grow in almost any conditions in any situations. It grows to 15cm (6ins) in height and 1.2m (4ft) in spread. It looks great when planted with blues and yell For the centrepiece of pots and baskets conifers have always been used traditionally, but for a more modern and contemporary look, there are a range of evergreen grasses that look great at this is the time of year. They are in full flower and the seed heads dance elegantly in the breeze on long stalks that stand above the strappy or spikey foliage. The foliage also colours up well in the autumn, adding to the interest. The best varieties for planting in tubs and baskets at this time of year are Unicinia rubra, Festuca gluaca ‘Intense Blue’, Anemanthele lessoniana, and Carex. Grasses are great for softening hard and harsh structures, plants, boundaries and straight edges. They add a touch of air, grace and elegance to the garden. Alternatively, if they are used in a minimalistic and contemporary way, they can look bold, architectural and stylish. Great filler and edging plants for autumn baskets and pots really help make the display look full and complete. You want to choose plants that help enhance and compliment the flowering plants you’ve chosen for colour for your display and not clash or distract from them. Flowering plants are the star of any pot or basket no matter what time of year it is, so choose the ones you like the most because they will be what your eye is Frizzle Sizzle pansy immediately drawn to. Traditionally it used to be only pansies and violas that were available for winter flowering, but in the last few years, new plants and more cold tolerant plants have been introduced, brought out or gained more popularity, increasing the choice of what can be used. With the range of winter flowering plants available now, autumn and winter displays can be as equally as vibrant and colourful as spring and summer ones. The best winter flowering plants to use are Cyclamen, Dianthus, Heathers, Campanula, Bellis, and of course we can’t forget the favourite pansies and violas. Look out for new and beautiful varieties of pansies and violas such as the ruffled pansy called ‘Frizzle Sizzle’. These have a ruffled edge all around the bloom and are an unusual and attractive alternative to the regular types. Get creative when planting your tubs and baskets for autumn, don’t be afraid to try something new, have fun with different combinations of plants to see what will work. Don’t settle for dull and drab containers in the winter months. There’s no reason not to have great looking pots and baskets. www.cornerstonevision.com
