Fight is on to save 10 libraries Campaigners urge public to make views known

Campaigners fighting to save 10 Plymouth libraries from closure are urging the public to make their views known before the consultation deadline is reached. A period of public consultation on the Plymouth City Council's controversial 'Plan for Libraries' ends on April 19. Meetings have been held at libraries across the city giving the public the opportunity to hear about the proposals in detail and to make their views known. Conservative and Labour councillors have voiced strong opposition to the plans which would see the closure of Peverell, Stoke, North Prospect, Eggbuckland, Efford, Ernesettle, Estover, Laira, Tothill and West Park libraries. Petitions have been raised, protest meetings held and Facebook pages launched – all aimed at opposing the closures. Labour leader Cllr Tudor Evans said: "Libraries are essential to communities. They are where children discover reading, people get hold of books they can't afford, computers give everyone access to the online world. We had started the job of making them a place to access council services, like at the new library now listed for closure in North Prospect." Conservative MP Oliver Colvile has said he has reservations about the proposals

Fishy goings on at Plymouth primary school – see page 19

and has suggested that the libraries could be run by staff with support from local communities. He has met with Coun Glenn Jordan, the City Council Cabinet member responsible for the plans, at the Houses of Parliament and has also raised the issue with Government ministers. The council's proposal highlights the fact that the seven libraries which would remain open - Crownhill, Devonport, Plympton, Plymstock, St Budeaux, Southway and Central Library - account for 80 per cent of all visits and 75 per cent of all items borrowed. Plymouth City Council has set up an online consultation facility at www. plymouth.gov.uk/libraries/planlibraries. People are also being encouraged to sign an online petition calling for the closure plans to be scrapped. This has attracted nearly 1,500 signatures. The petition can be found at www.change.org/p/cllr-glennjordan-stop-the-closure-of-libraries-inplymouth

Roads closed as part of £13m Derriford transport scheme The next phase of improvement works has started on the A386 Tavistock Road.

Work along the A386 Tavistock Road between Budshead Road and just south of Sendall’s Way and William Prance Road started on March 22. The Derriford Transport Scheme aims to reduce congestion along Tavistock Road and provide better public transport, walking and cycling links – improving journey times for all users. Extra lanes will be created and bus priority measures introduced at Derriford Roundabout and the William Prance Road junction to reduce journey times and improve service reliability. Modern and efficient traffic signals will be installed, along with new, marked cycle lanes and new pedestrian crossings. Walking and cycling improvements will also extend northwards along the A386 from Derriford Roundabout towards the George Park and Ride. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader and cabinet member for strategic transport, housing and planning said: “This is one of the key schemes we need if the city is to grow and prosper in years to come. “We need to plan ahead and make sure we have a road network that gets us to work, gets us home and helps us enjoy all that Plymouth offers. Doing this work now is an investment in the city’s future and opens up opportunities for homes and work in the north of the city.

“We are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum to road users. Please bear with us.”

Working hours will continue between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, with the occasional Saturday and night working to keep disruption down. The Tavistock Road entrance to William Prance Road will be closed until September and vehicle access will be via Derriford Roundabout and Brest Road only. The council will be pursuing opportunities to re-open the right turn from Tavistock Road into William Prance Road earlier and pedestrian and cycle access will remain.

Lane closures on Tavistock Road between Budshead Road and Sendall’s Way will be in place until September. The aim is still to keep two traffic lanes open in both directions along Tavistock Road for the majority of the time to keep traffic flowing and minimise disruption. To allow this, the bus lanes on both sides of the road between Budshead Road and Derriford Roundabout will be suspended throughout the works, so they can be used by all traffic. The right turn into Charlton Road will be closed until the winter meaning that northbound vehicles now need to go around Derriford Roundabout and travel back down Tavistock Road to access Charlton Road. On-street parking along Brest Road will be suspended to allow better flow of two way traffic when the William Prance Road junction is closed.

A route through the road works on Tavistock Road has been agreed with the emergency services to minimise impact on blue light vehicles. Work has been going on since January and so far the team has carried out site clearance, diverted utility services and started to lay new kerbs and drainage blocks on Tavistock Road, as well as filling in the central reservation and starting to place the structural foundations of the new traffic lanes.

Now people are being invited to ‘drop-in’ and have a chat with the project team. The ‘meet the team’ sessions will take place between 5pm and 7pm at the council’s Windsor House offices on Monday May 8; Monday June 12 and Monday July 10. More sessions will be arranged after the summer and will be advertised. The scheme is expected to be complete in spring 2018. Anyone travelling along this route is advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey. The Heart-of-the-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) is contributing £10.16 million towards the £13 million scheme. NODA National President Michael Hastilow presents the award to Jane Warwick and Gareth Davies of Plymouth’s Gilbert & Sullivan Fellowship

Best in the West! Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship are celebrating further success at this year’s National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) South West Region Awards for 2016.

The Fellowship, which is busy preparing for this year’s show ‘Chess’, were delighted to receive the Allan Brooking Award for the Best Gilbert and Sullivan Production at a glitzy award ceremony in Bristol for last year’s production of ‘Iolanthe’. The Fellowship’s production was one of six nominated for the award from right across the region, which includes theatrical groups from Wiltshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. The Fellowship has received this award on a number of occasions, the last time being for ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’ in 2015 and therefore is a clear recognition of the high standard of productions regularly produced by the group. PGS chairman, Gareth Davies, said: "We are very proud to win this award again, having recently won it before in 2015. This is more affirmation of the high and professional standards we present in our

r ppe ion o h S etit r mp fo Co nner y i a W bru r Fe

productions, both in the comic operas of Gilbert & Sullivan and shows such as this month's exciting production of Chess The Musical." Chess again brings together the talents of the internationally-acclaimed director Alan Spencer and PGS musical director Jane Warwick, who were the team behind both Iolanthe and The Yeomen of the Guard, and bodes well for the standard of this year’s production. This production represents the most modern offering to date from PGS, formed almost a century ago to stage the evergreen works of Victorian duo Gilbert and Sullivan. Since widening its repertoire to include other works, the group has presented The Merry Widow, My Fair Lady and even the Bizet masterpiece Carmen. This latest production, with music by ABBA's Benny Anderssen and Bjorn Ulvaeus is ranked by its lyricist Sir Tim Rice as his personal favourite. Chess opens at the Devonport Playhouse at 7.30pm Wednesday March 29 and runs for the rest of the week, with a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday. Tickets can be booked at the Box Office on 01752 600166 or online at www. plymouthgilbertandsullivan.com Congratulations to the winners of our February competion. Each of the three winners received a Family Fun Pass worth £100 at Plymouth Ski Centre. The winners were Marcia Bates of Plympton, Alison Brookes of Eggbuckland and Mrs J Jory of Plympton.

Two Plymouth dog owners who failed to comply with the new law to have their dogs microchipped, have been ordered to pay a total of £1,321 by Plymouth Magistrates. Stuart Hayes of Kensington Road, Mutley was found guilty of failure to comply with a notice to require microchipping and permitting a dog to be in a public place without the correct identification on his dog’s collar or id tag. Mr Hayes did not attend court, nor had he submitted any plea in absence. The court proceeded to hear the case in his absence, being satisfied that he had been served with the summons. They found him guilty of both charges. They imposed a fine of £660 for the more serious offence of permitting a dog to be in a public place without the correct identification on its collar /id tag. He was ordered to pay a contribution towards the prosecution costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £66, totalling £926. David Bartlett of Biddick Drive in Keyham admitted his dog was found wandering in a public place without the correct identification recorded on either a collar or tag, when collected as a stray. Mr Bartlett had pleaded guilty by post and offered

some mitigation. He was fined £260 (reduced from £400) for an early guilty plea and ordered to pay a contribution to prosecution costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £30, totalling £395. In April 2016 it became law for every dog owner in England to ensure their pet has been chipped, and that registered details are kept up-to-date. It has always been a legal requirement for all dogs to wear a collar and tag with identification of the owners name and address and preferably the telephone number, whilst in a public place. Councillor Dave Downie Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities said: “These court cases could have been avoided simply by the owners making sure their dogs were wearing a collar and tag, were chipped and the details were up to date. The last thing we want to do is prosecute dog owners but it is the law and we must enforce it. So my message to other dog owners is please, if you have a dog make sure it has a collar and tag, is microchipped and the details on the chip are up to date.” To check your dog’s micro-chip details you need the chip number which you can get by having your dog scanned at your local vets, and then checking with the relevant company on line.

Freedom Festival returns in June Plymouth's popular Freedom Community Festival returns after a successful event in 2016. This year's main weekend event will be held on Saturday June and Sunday June 4.

Other half term lead up events are to be confirmed with the theme of this year's festival being to celebrate all that is good about living in Plymouth. Anyone looking to perform, run a stall or volunteer should visit the festival website at www.freedomcommunityfestival. org.uk

Did you once scoot up and down Royal Parade on your Vespa or shimmy on down at The Quay Club? If so, an evening dedicated to the 1960s this May could be just your thing.

People are welcome to bring in any memorabilia they’ve kept for the team to look at and can also enter into the spirit of the evening by dressing up in 60s-inspired outfits. If you shouted and screamed at The Beatles at the ABC or bopped around the juke box at ‘La Cappuccino’, this could be the event for you.

‘Sounds of the Sixties’ will officially mark the start of a major Plymouth History Centre community engagement project called ‘Plymouth After Dark’. This four year outreach project will explore the range of activity that takes place across the city at night. Led by members of staff from the City Museum and Art Gallery it will capture stories from people of all ages and backgrounds, collect objects to add to the permanent collections, provide a series of events and commission new work. It will culminate in an exhibition in the History Centre after it is opened in 2020. ‘Sounds of the Sixties’ will take place at the New Continental Hotel from 6.30pm to 11.30pm on Friday May 12. Local historian Chris Robinson will deliver a bespoke ‘Going Out in 60s Plymouth’ talk. This will then be followed by a two-hour music

Mark Tosdevin, Programmes Manager at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery said: “The 1960s was a decade of rapid change which saw major developments in society, fashion, technology and of course, music. With so many themes to focus on it’s the ideal launch pad for our major community engagement project - and it promises to be a fun and entertaining evening.” Members of the Museum team will also be on hand at the event to chat to people who want to share

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “Staff from the City Museum and Art Gallery are working on a number of initiatives to engage communities while the History Centre is under construction. “The theme of ‘After Dark’ is brilliantly wide ranging and will enable us to capture the experiences of different people, ages, professions and cultures helping to reveal a part of the city’s cultural heritage that many of us take for granted.“ Tickets for ‘Plymouth After Dark: Sounds of the Sixties’ are on sale now and are priced at £16.50. The Guild was established in 1907 to fight the social evils of the time, such as hunger and destitution, but has now evolved into a charity dedicated to providing support, advice and information for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions, engaging with over 17,000 people in 2016. George Plenderleith, the Guild’s chief executive said: “We are very proud of our close partnership with Plymouth City Council and every year the Lord Mayor is always Guild President. Our work with the council also extends to the Guild running the City’s Volunteer Centre.

“The venue of Home Park was a natural choice to stage our year-long anniversary celebrations, as we work very closely with Argyle Community Trust, the charitable arm of the football club, delivering fun, inclusive programmes to vulnerable sectors in our community.

“While the Plymouth Guild brand has rightly earned respect and admiration over 110 years of dedicated service to the city, we feel the time is right for a new name to mark a new era.

“We have consulted with our supporters, service-users, staff and volunteers, and the overwhelming response was the need for a name that better reflects our mission as a charity. “The word ‘Guild’ has archaic connotations that do not mix with the modern aspirations of our charity. It is an exciting step into the unknown and we are very confident a new name will bring new awareness and new opportunities for the people of Plymouth. Healing Rooms at Plymouth Healing Rooms started more than six years ago and has seen many people who have been greatly encouraged, many receiving physical and emotional healing. At the beginning of last year organisers felt led to branch out into the market place and began the journey that led them to start Costa Healing Rooms. They approached the manager of Costa in New George Street to ask about the possibility of establishing the Costa Healing Rooms. Not only did the manager agree, she was also very helpful and accommodating. As a result Costa Healing Rooms was launched in November last year and officially opened by Coun Steve Ricketts. Costa Healing Rooms first started in 2012 in a shopping mall in Staffordshire. They have seen great results and have had many healings. The director of Healing Rooms and the team trained the Plymouth volunteers, many of whom have been with Healing Rooms for over five years. The vision for Costa Healing Rooms Plymouth is for the team to be a blessing to the city of Plymouth and beyond. Anybody who needs physical, emotional or relationship healing is welcome and there is no cost. Costa Healing Rooms takes place at the coffee shop at 14 Old Town Street on the upper floor, every Wednesday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The Plymouth Healing Rooms team also meet on Monday evenings at the Shekinah Mission in Bath Street from 7.30pm to 9.30pm (with the exception of bank holidays). All are welcome and there is no cost. The band was formed by members Higgi and Karen in memory of their sister, friend and fellow singer, Amanda Findlow, who died from liver cancer at the age of 40. Indian Inn landlady Claire Bassett Photo by Roy Perring

Stoke's Indian Inn satisfying the thirst for companionship Stepping into conversation with Claire Bassett was like walking into a warm hug, which is how a group of recent customers described walking into her spotlessly clean, 19th century pub, the Indian Inn in Stoke Village, writes Karen Pilkington. Claire has been the landlady there for longer than many regulars’ remember, having taken over its running along with her father in 1990. Being a publican was clearly in the blood for Claire, whose grandparents, Nance and Fred, had run the Masonic Inn in Stoke since the 1960s. Claire said: “The bar is just like another room in my house and my guests, and the girls who work here, are like family to me”. Angie and Barbara, who work as part of the team, have been with Claire for 12 and five years respectively, - a testimony to Claire’s friendly approach to her business and livelihood. “When I’m not serving, you can find me cooking in the pub, cleaning, wallpapering and painting the outside”, laughs Claire – one of the most infectious things about her is her chuckle, and probably why she maintains her passion to care for the great community asset she has. I’ts not easy these days to make a living from being in the hospitality industry. Gone are the days when workers popped in for a quick half at lunch time, or on the way home from work. And at a time when the fashion for a night out tends to be to drink as much as you can and as cheaply at home, the old fashioned haven of the local pub and the atmosphere that Claire prides herself as having is often overlooked. Pubs like the Indian Inn keep many of the threads of society together, creating safe havens where people from all walks of life, all ages and dispositions are guaranteed to find a friendly face and someone to talk to. For communities like Stoke, it is part of the glue that helps keep everyone sane. A place where men can have the odd deep conversation amongst friends whilst keeping half an eye on the football; where friends can meet for a natter; folk can

enjoy a home cooked Sunday lunch, or Saturday evening curry; or the skills of dart playing or Euchre can be learnt from veterans. Its this kind of companionship which acts as a reminder that human beings are designed to be social animals, actively seeking the company of others. Claire makes her food from scratch, home made puddings, and freshly cooked vegetables and meat. Her Sunday lunches are so successful that she has to make sure spaces are pre booked. “I’m always on the look out to create new teams for activities,” added Claire. The Indian Inn football team has grown from a bunch of lads just starting out in life to the seasoned veterans they are now – and Claire is keen to get a walking football team up and running shortly. She is also the perfect home for any newly-formed football team looking for someone to support them through the local leagues. Not only would they find their own warm hug whether they won or lost, they would also find loyalty and commitment that could well help them stay together until they formed their own walking football team in decades to come. Euchre, which Claire explains is a kind of poor man’s Bridge, a very popular card game in Naval towns, has its own league on a Wednesday evening in the pub and darts is extremely popular amongst men and women. “We recently held a Guinness World Record attempt for the highest score from a team of eight.” said Claire. “We had worked it out that our men’s team had to score over 525 per minute to break the record. Despite their best efforts, this is one of the hardest records to crack so they just didn’t quite get there. Our ladies had a slightly easier job, and successfully set a new Guinness Record, recorded carefully by the World Record Organisation through Skype, cameras and a highly accurate clock that they posted to us a week before.” It’s fantastic to see the care and generosity in the hearts of traders such as Claire, who are so committed to keeping the community of Stoke alive and well. If you feel like warm hugs have been few and far between lately, you ought to pop in and make yourself known. You won’t be disappointed.

‘Museum on tour’ exhibition highlights postwar design Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery has opened a new exhibition at the Council House which looks at all aspects of 1950s design.

‘Britain in the Fifties: Design and Aspiration’ will be on display until Saturday June 3 and is a nationally touring exhibition organised by Compton Verney Art Gallery, Warwick. Plymouth is the only South West venue on the tour. The exhibition uses a diverse range of objects to show how, in the years that followed the Second World War, design played a crucial role in shaping a ‘Brave New World’. “The 1950s was a time when Britain emerged from a period of austerity and rationing and really began to modernise itself,” explains programmes manager, Mark Tosdevin. “The ground-breaking Festival of Britain in 1951 showed that we could lead the world with the quality and innovation of our decorative and applied arts. As the country became more prosperous, leading artists became household names and good design became affordable.” ‘Britain in the Fifties: Design and Aspiration’ includes furnishings and fabrics, ceramics and cutlery, magazines and machinery, clothing and memorabilia as well as an iconic Vespa - all set against the backdrop of the Council House which also dates from that era. “The 1950s wasn’t just significant nationally,” continued Mark. “It was also an important decade for Plymouth, during which an ambitious rebuilding programme took place after the devastation of the Blitz. The legacy of that programme can still be seen today thanks to venues such as the Council House. This is an opportunity for people to experience a vision of the country from 60 years ago by visiting an exhibition about the 1950s in an authentic 1950s building.” ‘Britain in the Fifties: Design and Aspiration’ is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday (with the exception of Good Friday and Bank Holiday Mondays). Admission is free and there is no need to book. Full details are available from the what’s on section of www.plymhearts.org

Cost-effective boiler replacements Gas boilers account for more than half of what homeowners spend in a year on energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference - that’s the message from Steve Short of Plymouth-based A Boiler 4 U.

Steve said: “Most modern boilers are guaranteed for 5 years, but there are literally thousands of older boilers out there which are inefficient and probably coming to the end of their useful life.

Steve Short

“In recent years there have been lots of schemes appearing to offer boilers replaced for free, particularly the Government’s ECO

scheme, or grants towards a new boiler. However, there are strict criteria involved and many homeowners - particularly pensioners - can find it all very confusing.

“I have come across quite a number of elderly homeowners whose boilers have broken down and they simply can’t afford to replace them. They may not qualify for a free boiler replacement and that leaves them in a pretty desperate situation.” He said that at A Boiler 4 U they are committed to bringing the cost of a new boiler down by offering great value for money. “We offer £400 scrappage on the old boiler and free 10 year parts and labour guarantee on the new appliance,” said Steve. “Choosing a new boiler to provide the most energy and costefficient solution to heating and hot-water needs can be a daunting affair, which is why we offer a free assessment to help homeowners choose the best solution for their particular needs. “In today’s climate of rocketing energy prices, homeowners need a solution that will not only provide them with the level of heat and hot water that will meet their current and future needs, but also one that will be more cost-effective than their current heating system.

“New boilers can be up to 30% more cost effective than their older counterparts, so while there may be a small upfront investment, the savings on your heating and hot water bills could be significant, allowing you to recoup any outlay for a new boiler over a few years in running-cost savings. “Choosing a boiler from our range also gives you enormous peace of mind, with some of the most comprehensive and respected warranties in the industry.” Steve’s family run company supply and install high efficiency condensing boilers from leading manufacturers such as Vaillaint, Baxi and Worcester and also offer a price match guarantee. “We are Gas Safe registered and our installation team have many years of experience in the industry.

“Homeowners who have one of our boilers fitted start saving money each time they turn their tap on or switch on the central heating,” he added. In addition to supplying and installing new boilers Steve’s company also carry out boiler repairs and routine servicing as well as complete central heating installations. AHEAD of TIME HAIR DAMAGE IS SO YESTERDAY!

If wines and spirits get better the more they age, then relationships are even more enhanced by longevity.

There’s a remarkable local threesome, known humorously as the “Scissor Sisters”, that are proof that staying together in business and as friends really can add colour to the humdrum of ordinary life. “Ahead of Time” has been a hair salon in Stoke Village for 40 years this year, one of the longest running businesses in the area – and there are quite a few long running traders in this remarkable part of town. Co owner Lynne Hepworth has been at the salon for 30 years, her colleagues Denise Bailey for a staggering 35 and Bianca Cave for just 15 years! Clearly, you cannot work together for that length of time without building something really special, and that is exactly what you feel as you walk through the door of the salon. Lynne, Denise and Bianca know their customers as well as their own families, and indeed have created a place where their customers have made friends, go off to lunch together, and celebrate each others birthdays.

Many customers, such as Mrs Halford, have been coming weekly for the last 18 years. “Much less fuss than having to do your own hair in your 80’s” she explains, “Its important to treat yourself and look nice – it makes you feel good. And todays stuff is so much better than the perms of the past that made your hair look like a bush!” Mrs Halford is right. Lynne, Denise and Bianca use Goldwell and Schwarzkopf products for their perms, colours and highlights which make hair damage so yesterday! Hair feels softer, less brittle and better protected against drying out – making it much easier to look good after leaving the salon, no matter what our wild weather throws at us. Having a modern perm is a brilliant way to keep the vitality in your hair alive between salon trips should you decide, like Mrs Halford to treat yourself once a week to the professional care and companionship of Lynne, Denise and Bianca. “One of our customers is now over 100,” boasts Lynne “and she still gets herself to the salon each week. Its great to see her and know that we can help her look her very best and continue to enjoy life.

Lynne also offers a mobile appointment service which can be accessed by calling the salon on 568760. It means that if ever someone just can’t get out easily because of illness, or just the stresses and strains of caring for others, they can still have that little bit of pampering and relaxation they deserve, and that Lynne is so expert at providing. “We do love our older ladies, L to R: Lynne Hepworth, Denise Bailey, Bianca Cave and really want them to feel “Quite simply, we all love what we Stoke. School’s first ever students take a uniform approach It’s not every day you get to choose the school uniform you are going to wear for the next three years but that’s exactly what the first students to attend Plymouth’s newest secondary school have just done. The first ever Year 9 at Scott Medical and Healthcare College took part in a text vote to choose a uniform from three suggestions when they attended their Options Evening in March at the school’s sponsor Stoke Damerel Community College. Option Two – a blue jacket with white piping, a tie, black trousers and the option of a blue pleated, checked skirt for girls – was the most popular choice garnering more than 60% of the vote.

Education in March 2015. It will be teaching young people in Years 9 to 13 to develop highly-valued vocational academic experience for the medical and healthcare sector and the first Year 9 – the Class of 2020 – is almost full. Applications are still open for places in the College’s first Year 12 and the College’s first phase of teacher recruitment is currently under way. The headteacher of Scott College, Martyn Cox, said choosing the uniform was an important step in underlining the College’s ethos and core values and that the students’ input was key. “We wanted our first Year 9 to have a real stake in how they present themselves and Scott College while at school and when out on work placement,” he said.

The jacket also sports a badge bearing the Scott College logo designed by Plymouth University design student Melissa Noble.

“Their choice is a smart, comfortable uniform which will reinforce their view of themselves as the medics of the future,” he said.

Plans for the 375-student school - which will open in September - were announced by the Department for

Students who start in Year 9 will each be given a blazer free of charge.

“The Scott College uniform conveys a smart, professional mindset and will be very recognisable as our students go to their work placements. “

Studio schools are state schools which are more like workplaces with a longer school day and classroom teaching combined with work placements. At first, students will carry out work experience from half a day to a full day each week. Admitting pupils aged between 13 and 19, the studio school will be separate and distinct from Stoke Damerel whilst taking advantage of the economies of scale of being a part of the Inspiring Schools Partnership multiacademy trust. Central to the vision for the school - which offers a range of academic, vocational and professional qualifications - is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating the studio school’s unique and innovative curriculum.

Curriculum lead Tim Cresswell, who has overseen the uniform design process, said staff were keen that students helped shape the future of Scott College.

As well as the university’s Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD) and its Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust is also a partner in Scott College.

“Giving our young people the responsibility for something as important as their uniform shows the voice of our students will always be heard and taken seriously,” said Mr Cresswell.

Parents and students keen to register their interest in Scott College can go to www.scottcollege.co.uk and sign up for email updates on the application process and the school’s progress.

Fight to save Stoke Library Over recent days and weeks we have been working in both the Council House and within the local community to oppose the closure of Stoke Library. It was encouraging to be joined by so many members of the public at the official public meeting at Stoke Library. FathersHouseSW

We’ve been dealing with a lot of casework related to fly tipping. We are concerned that abolishing weekly bin collections is going to have a negative impact locally. Fly tipping also needs firm enforcement action. If you have an example of fly tipping and who might be responsible, please let us know. We get lots and lots of calls about the lack of parking. We have delivered voting forms (for a possible controlled parking zone) to residents in the Rectory Road area, who find their streets are taken up with cars from the expansion at City College. If you’re concerned and we might be able to help, please get in touch. We recently helped out with a litter pick in Blockhouse Park. In spite of savage hailstorms, volunteers were still smiling at the end and collected quite a bit of rubbish! We voted against Plymouth City Council’s Budget 2017-18 as we do not believe that the proposals are in the best interests of our area. The Budget passed with a narrow majority.

Stoke is home to one of the most remarkable and beautiful places in Plymouth: the Blockhouse Park, with its stunning views over the Tamar and on to the Cornish countryside and Dartmoor’s majestic landscape in the distance. However, one of the drawbacks of this stunning open space with its big skies, is its BIG weather. A group of intrepid volunteers set off in sunshine to litter pick for the national initiative, the Big Clean Up and ended up exposed in the park to the worst hailstones known to man! However, thanks to a generous donation from the Community Grant Scheme and accessed by Councillor Mike Sparling, which purchased hi-vis jackets for the team, at least they had something to protect them from the crazy weather, and make sure they were seen doing the work!

So here’s hoping that July will see the sunshine streaming down on the Blockhouse so the community can enjoy one of its finest assets without having to brave the worst the elements can through at them!

Stoke’s Paradise Field is to remain just that – a field Strategic planners have rejected a proposal for the site near City College to have houses built on it after 230 people objected to the idea and commented on the site as part of the Joint Local Plan consultation process.

The latest version of the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan was published recently and subject to the

formal approval of all three full councils will be formally submitted to a planning inspector.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, Transport, and Planning, said: “This was one of the most controversial proposals put forward. As a council we are acutely aware that thousands of families need good homes here in Plymouth. This is why the site was put forward to help address that need, but it became clear that people

living around this site felt passionately that it should be protected. We’ve listened to their arguments and felt they had a solid case, so this site is no longer earmarked for housing. I also think it is a great example of how the council can work with its residents, through this planning and consultation process to really listen to their concerns.”

forward as a possible site for housing and greenspace in the Joint Local Plan consultation.

Out of all the proposals put forward in Plymouth, this attracted the most comments, with local residents arguing it should be given green space designation as it meets all the criteria. They also highlighted the lack of green space in this part of Plymouth.

The land is owned by the council and was put up for sale in 2013 and advertised as a possible housing site.

The field falls within the conservation area and is surrounded by historic buildings.

This proposal was further cemented when the site was put

College nominated for award City College Plymouth is celebrating after reaching the finals of the prestigious Times Education Supplement (TES) FE Awards. The college was shortlisted in the Apprenticeship Programme of the Year category.

The Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, recognise the dedication and expertise of the people who, on a daily basis, make a significant contribution to improving the skill levels of young people and adult learners. The college is one of the largest apprenticeship providers in the country, with a success rate of 16% above the

Plans for £7m Market Hall development submitted The plans, which have been prepared by the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), will transform the derelict Grade II listed building into a cutting-edge space for digital skills, research, learning and entertainment. Working with Le Page Architects, RIO has developed a scheme which adds an additional 820 square metres to the current shell of the former Market Hall to accommodate flexible work space, events and exhibition space, a café, bar and restaurant.

Housed in the new extension will be an impressive 15m immersive dome theatre which will offer a large scale shared virtual reality environment – the first of its kind in Europe. Lindsey Hall, chief executive of RIO, said: “We're very pleased to be submitting full plans to gain planning permission for the Market Hall. “It is a key step in the journey to realising our ambitions to create a world class, cutting edge digital arts, enterprise and learning centre in Plymouth including an amazing immersive dome with shared Virtual Reality technologies. Fingers crossed things go smoothly, we can start building towards the end of the year." Professor Mike Phillips, director of i-DAT at

“The unique facility and the inclusion of a ‘first in Europe’ immersive dome will boost i-DAT’s trans-disciplinary research into immersive media, game technologies and the shared Virtual Reality of the Fulldome - the kind of stuff that expands your brain and melts your eyes.” RIO hopes to receive approval for the plans in June and, subject to planning approval, work is expected to start on site towards the end of the year.

A new community cinema is opening up in Devonport and encouraging people to take a trip down memory lane.

The Red Velvet Cinema has received £2000 of funding from the Plymouth bursary arts project – Vital Sparks – to run a pilot project showing six classic films to Devonport’s own Golden Oldies in an attempt to combat social isolation. Caroline Blackler, who is behind the project, says although the films are a vital part of the project, it is really about connecting people: “I’m hoping to use old

films to bring people together; people who are lonely and might be reluctant to socialise,” said Caroline. “The idea is that after watching the old film, they’ll stay and have a cup of tea and then they’ll want to talk to each other about all their lovely memories connected to the film.” Research published by Age UK at the start of the year, found that there are more than 1.2 million older people living in this country who are chronically lonely and of these, nearly 4000 in Plymouth. “Do you know,” said Caroline, “that nearly a quarter of people over the age of 75 who live alone don’t speak to anyone else all day

This year the college is expanding its apprenticeship offer by adding new frameworks, including creative and cultural community theatre, which is already in high demand. The Work-based Learning team have also set up a pre-Apprenticeship course, to support vulnerable young people who might otherwise not consider apprenticeships as a route.

The Plymouth Shopper is a series of community newspapers distributed to more than 64,000 homes across the city on a monthly basis. We welcome details of local stories, including success, awards, appointments and events. Send your items by e-mail to: info@cornerstonevision.com or by post to: The Plymouth Shopper, 28, Old Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth PL3 4PY.

Plymouth University said: "The Market Hall is a critical vehicle for realising Plymouth’s digital ambitions. It will provide a significant gravitational pull for our graduates, diverse audiences and an international community of digital practitioners.

Golden oldies at community cinema If you can remember some of the area’s old flea pits, such as the Devonport Forum, the Electric and the Hippodrome, then you’re just the ticket for the Red Velvet Cinema which wants to fill its seats with people-of-a-certainage.

Winning the Association of College’s Beacon Award for promotion and delivery of successful apprenticeships, the college is rightly proud of its programme.

and quite a lot of them go five or six days without having anyone else to speak to. It’s no wonder that three quarters of GPs say that between one and five of their daily appointments are taken up by elderly people who, aren’t poorly, they just want someone to talk to.” In recent years, health authorities, as well as, charities supporting the elderly, have recognised the huge cost of loneliness and social isolation to us all. It is now understood that it can lead to the onset of physical and mental health issues, such as, heart conditions, depression and dementia. It can also lead to a premature death. Jan Potter, Head of Health

Improvement at Livewell Southwest says for many people, one of the biggest barriers to overcoming loneliness is feeling confident about accessing somewhere new, meeting new people and worrying that you might not fit in. A community cinema built on memories, she believes, might persuade some people to come along and share an interest: “It gives people an excellent opportunity to leave their homes, socialise and reminisce,” said Jan Potter. “This exciting project offers people something very tangible that they can do for themselves, getting them out in the community to connect. And that connection, we now know, is critical to improving people’s health and wellbeing.” The films will be shown at Devonport Live Café at 10.30am and followed by tea and cake. Tickets will be £4.

Spring is here at last - now it's time to think about all those jobs in the home and garden

As spring arrives, it brings with it warmer weather and longer days. That means it’s a great time to get stuck into those projects you’ve been putting off and get your home smartened up. The clocks went forward on March 27 so it’s also the perfect opportunity to spruce things up in the garden too, ready to spend more time outside. Of course DIY can be costly, but it needn’t be. Giving rooms a fresh lick of paint, getting a few new accessories and adding a splash of colour to your outside space will work wonders for your home, and you don’t have to spend lots to do it.

So, roll out your paintbrushes and dig out your trowels as we give you our guide to spring DIY that won’t break the bank. Give individual rooms a facelift There’s no need to go mad and decorate your whole home. Pick rooms that are looking a little tired or you haven’t paid much attention to lately. Kitchens are a great place to start as most families spend a lot of time there. Simply painting the walls, changing the door knobs or handles and adding a few colourful utensils will inject your

Lounges and bedrooms could benefit from repainting or wallpapering as well. Just wallpapering one wall rather than the whole room can have a similar impact and saves you a few pounds. And, depending on the size of the rooms, you should be able to get it all done in a weekend. Update your furnishings An easy and affordable way to transform your home is to

update your furnishings. You don’t need to trek round the furniture shops looking for a new sofa though - changing your cushions or curtains makes a massive difference. Think about dropping in a few brighter colours and patterns for a bold impact. If you’re feeling creative, a good way to save money is to make your own. All you need is some fabric, a sewing kit and your imagination. Making some cushion covers, table runners or a new pair of curtains gives you a chance to get your creative juices flowing and an enormous sense of pride when you’ve finished.

It’s important to show your outside space some love too, especially as you’ll be planning to spend more time there as the weather improves. Give your flowerbeds and borders a good tidy up... trim back overgrown bushes, plants, hedges and trees, and dig out anything that’s on its last legs. Spring is also a good time to get some new plants and shrubs into the garden ready for summer. All your existing plants will bloom back to life as the season changes, but a few new additions will give you something fresh to enjoy. Gladioli and small evergreens are ideal to pop in your garden in spring, while Dahlias are perfect for pots on the patio. Unfortunately weeds also love the better conditions, so make sure you dig them all out. You may be unhappy to hear it’s also time to start mowing your lawns again too. Get on top of these particular jobs early and it’ll be easier to maintain a glorious garden throughout the warmer months. Finish those little jobs Finally make sure all those little DIY jobs are finished. Fix broken handles and hinges, oil squeaking doors and sort out any old grouting in showers and bathrooms. Also, don’t forget to clear your gutters and drains of leaves and repaint or mend any drainpipes that are looking a bit worse for wear. Tackling these tasks now, before you need to get the professionals in or replace things, could save you money in the long run.

we can make it safer for you to get in and out of, and around, your own home

Hopefully our DIY tips that won’t break the bank have inspired you to get busy this spring.

The raffle was held at the Dignity in Care Forum hosted by the council’s Quality Assurance and Improvement Team (QAIT). Members of the team presented their cheque to Sue Rodgers, Play Specialist Team Leader at Derriford Hospital. Sue said: “Children’s Happy Hospital Fund would like to thank Plymouth City Council and the care providers in Plymouth for their continued support in raising funds for our children’s wards. “Our aim is to enhance the facilities on the children’s wards and provide a child friendly environment for all that have to stay on Level 12. It is fantastic that our charity has been chosen to benefit from the funds raised through the raffles and I would like to thank everyone who supported this event.” Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “It is fantastic that so much was raised for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund by our local care providers. “The Dignity in Care Forum hosted by our QAIT is a great opportunity for care providers to share best practice, look at operational issues around training, offer help and advice with improving the quality of services, provide an opportunity for providers to network with one another and raise awareness of current local and national initiatives in the sector.” Members of Plymouth City Council’s Quality Assurance & Improvement Team recently attended Derriford Hospital with Cllr Lynda Bowyer, Portfolio Holder for Adult Health & Social Care, to present the funds to CHHF, and to take up the opportunity to see the wonderful sensory room, which has been developed from previous fundraising. City Council apprentices are up for a challenge

International Women’s Day sees launch of special quilt A special project which has brought many women together was launched on International Women’s Day in March.

A team of nine apprentices from Plymouth City Council is competing in the national Brathay Apprenticeshop Challenge. The team are currently taking part in regional heats and are assessed on their delivery of a community project that benefits young people in the local area, as well as activities that raise the profile of apprenticeships within the city, in which the team are from and also on a national level.

So far the team have attended school career fairs, talking to young people and parents about apprenticeships and where they can access advice and have questions answered. The community project that the team has chosen is to redecorate and refurbish The Zone based on Union Street. This is a charitable organisation that helps young people on a range of topics ranging from questions about sexuality to job seeking. The team chose to take on this project as it will help young people feel more comfortable visiting The Zone and give a more pleasant environment for young people to talk about difficult subjects. The refurbishment will help the Zone increase awareness of services they provide, for example, the emotional support, information on housing, sexual health and mental health that it provides. This work will be done with the support of partner organisations such as Plymouth Community Homes who will supply labour in the form of apprentices and materials at no cost. The team have had meetings with The Zone and they are really pleased that the team had approached them with this proposal. With help from other apprentices within our city, the team are currently putting together a plan of action to ensure that the work is completed Areas within the building that are in need of improvement are: New carpets, vinyl flooring in the toilets, plastering the holes in the ceiling, painting all the walls, deep clean of the whole building Leader of the Council Ian Bowyer said: “We are so proud of the enthusiasm our apprentices show – not just in the work place but how they approach challenges such as this. “Apprenticeships play a crucial role in helping us identify talent and future employees. Helping them acquire skills and confidence, is not just good for the council, but good for the city and other organisations.” The team think that the Brathay Challenge is a good opportunity to work within a team of fellow apprentices from across different parts of the business world who they do not normally work with in their day to day jobs. It also gives the members of the team an opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills. The Brathay Apprentice Challenge has developed the confidence of the team during the Challenge and this will no doubt continue to develop as the challenge goes on. On May 17 the team will find out if they have been successful in progressing from the regional heat stage of the challenge at the House of Commons in London. If they get through to the finals they will be invited to Brathay Hall on Lake Windermere in the Lake District along with other national finalists on June 15. Over the past six months women from different communities across Plymouth have been working together to celebrate and remember their fellow females using traditional textile crafts to create ‘Joyce’s Quilt’. Fishy business..Ben Bartlett with some of the youngsters at College Road Primary School

Celebrity chef helps Plymouth youngsters to dish up more fish Celebrity chef, Ben Bartlett, visited College Road Primary School in Plymouth as part of Seafish’s latest campaign, Fish 2 a week, to urge the UK to fall in love with seafood. Ben is embarking on a six week road trip where he will visit six schools across the country to highlight the fun and creative ways children can enjoy eating more seafood, whilst educating them on the many health benefits.

Getting to know you..College Road pupils up close with a selection of different fish

"Seafish’s Fish 2 a week campaign will hopefully encourage children to try alternative, tasty species and

make new recipes with old favourites. Two a week can be kept simple; whether it’s tuna melts or fishcakes, there are loads of delicious recipes for everyone to enjoy!”

Rotarians splash of Purple4Polio Rotarians from Plympton, Saltram, Roborough and the Plymouth Mayflower clubs took on the national initiative to help Rotary’s awareness efforts towards a Polio free world. Members of the Plymouth club planted 20,000 crocuses at the university and also on the Hoe and a number of local schools, such as Eggbuckland Community College and Plymouth College Prep School.

Hayley said: “Joyce’s story got me thinking ‘where was the community’? People don’t have those chats over the garden fence anymore and often say ‘I keep myself, to myself’. How isolated have we become? I wanted to do something that would symbolise Joyce and bring women across Plymouth together, each of whom could contribute a patch to a quilt that tells their own story.”

The finished quilt is 2.5 metres high by 2.9 metres long and contains 56 individually decorated squares. It’s edged with white, green and purple as a nod to the suffrage movement. Each square is dedicated to a woman who means something to its maker, from Maya Angelou, to Barbara Hepworth, to community nurses, to family members. In the centre and heart of the quilt there is a square dedicated to Joyce.

Ben, who is one of the UK’s foremost demonstration chefs said: “It’s extremely important that we educate children in the benefits of eating more fish at an early age. Seafood is great for brain development and maintaining a healthy heart.

A grass bank on North Cross Roundabout has seen a splash of purple in recent weeks - thanks to thousands of crocuses that members of four Rotary clubs in Plymouth planted last autumn.

After seeing a documentary about Joyce called ‘Dreams of a Life’ by Carol Morley, Hayley Kemp who works for Plymouth Community Homes was inspired to create a project that would address this kind of social isolation.

‘Joyce’s Quilt’ is a Vital Sparks project funded by the Plymouth History Centre and supported by Plymouth Community Homes, Routeways and artist Karen Evans from The Conscious Sisters. The project has travelled around the city to many different communities and has seen a wide range of women who wouldn’t normally meet up, get together to sew and share stories.

The NHS and health professionals recommend that everyone should eat two portions of fish each week, one of which being an oily fish, to ensure bodies are kept in good working order, boost brain function and maintain a healthy heart. A survey carried out by Seafish, the authority on seafood, showed that 76% of adults in the South West are not eating the recommended amount of seafood each week despite 80% being worried about their health as levels of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other diseases are increasing.

Joyce Vincent died alone in her flat in north London and lay unmissed by anyone for more than two years while her television set blared and post mounted up. Her body was eventually discovered in her tiny studio flat in Wood Green. A bag of shopping lay by her side while Christmas presents lay under the tree.

raise awareness and funds for End Polio Now. The mass planting of purple crocus corms is designed to raise awareness of the fight to eradicate polio as well as being part of the RHS 'Greening Grey Britain' campaign to transform underused and undervalued grey areas of towns and cities into green havens. The purple crocus being planted symbolises the purple dye placed on the little finger on the left hand of a child to show they have been immunised against polio. Plympton Rotarian Darren Hands said: “In 1985, when Rotary International committed to eradicating the disease, polio paralysed more than 350,000 children every single year in 125 countries - or about 1,000 children per day. Since that time, the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99.9%, with just three cases reported so far this year.”

The national initiative has seen Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland joining forces with the Royal Horticultural Society to plant over seven million purple crocus corms across Britain and Ireland as part of their Members of the Rotary Clubs of Plympton, Saltram, Roborough and Plymouth Mayflower Purple4Polio campaign to

For more information visit www.rotarygbi.org and see the Purple4Polio information.

The quilt was unveiled on International Women’s Day, at the HQ building, Union Street – the site of the former Jaeger factory. Judith Robinson, arts and cultural development manager, Plymouth City Council said: “We’re delighted to support a project which has engaged so many different women across the city and to see it launched at such a significant venue where many women would have worked on sewing in days gone by.” Following the launch the quilt will tour to some of the locations around the city where it was created. It will eventually be housed in the History Centre after it opens in 2020.

Collings Park Trust boost Collings Park Trust in Compton has received a grant of just over £5,000 thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. The funding boost from Postcode Local Trust will enable Collings Park Trust to continue with the next phase of its project to create a community garden and wildlife area for the benefit of all members of the local community. Volunteers have made great progress in the nine months since the land in Collings Park was purchased from Plymouth City Council, with the site clearance work now largely complete. Andrew Leigh, chair of trustees said: “This generous grant means we can move ahead with plans to make our community space more accessible and usable. By the time summer arrives we hope to have paths laid, seating in place and raised planting beds available for local school children to use. We will also be planting a community orchard for future generations to benefit from.” The Plymouth Shopper

Big shake up for parking in city as hourly rate rises A raft of new parking arrangements designed to make parking simpler in Plymouth will come into effect from the beginning of April. Cheaper long-stay parking, simpler tariffs and tickets that can be used in more than one place are part of a package of measures to help shoppers and visitors park more easily. Smart meters will be installed to allow people to park for longer if they overpay (for example, if they don’t have the right change) and transferable tickets will be introduced that so that drivers parking on streets can move their cars to another location if there is still time left on their ticket. Plymouth’s journey to become more digitally friendly and services more accessible also takes another step with virtual permits for hotel and guest house visitors soon to be made available. Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery, said: “No one likes to pay more for anything, but we have used this review to see how we can make our offer better, iron out issues as well as create revenue so that we can continue to protect the services that look after the vulnerable. “We have tried to strike a balance between keeping increases as low as possible as well as looking at how our service can help businesses, including shops and hotels.” Key changes include: Simpler to park on-street The new arrangements will simplify and standardise on-street parking by applying the same charges between 8am and 6pm as well as a city wide flat rate evening charge of £2 between 6pm and 8am (except Hoe Road and Madeira Road). The hourly on-street charge will increase by 10p from £1.40 to £1.50.

Better service for hotels and guest houses Visitor permits will soon be bookable online without needing to collect and display paper permits from First Stop. Permit fees, which have been the same for over 20 years, will be increased from £2 to £5. The time has been extended too, so that visitors can have a lie in and time to check out at 10am. The old permits ran from midnight to midnight. The council have listened to hoteliers and will still operate the paper permit system for the time-being. Better for businesses Business permits will be simplified and standardised with all current daily business permits replaced with a new long stay business permit and a short stay business permit as well as a new business visitor permit costing £2. Revised car park tariffs To help city centre business and to encourage people to stay longer and spend in city centre shops, the one hour option is being removed from all long stay car parks (except Western Approach) , the ‘up to six hours’ fee is reducing from £4 to £3.50 though short stay car park tariffs will go up by 10p an hour. Blue badge holders A new virtual permit for Blue Badge holders to park in any council car park for £40 a year will be introduced. Plymouth is following other councils by applying charges for Blue Badges in its car parks, but will allow Blue Badge holders to have an hour free above the paid time. There will be no changes to residents’ permits or residents’ visitor permits. The Parking Modernisation Plan was approved by Cabinet in December and members of the public were invited to take part in a consultation in January.

MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey

Could you earn £250 an hour?

You may think that you could only earn that much by moving to London and joining a bank or training as a solicitor, but I came across an article that suggests it can be done without leaving your own home. I’m not referring to one of those email scams that regularly hits my inbox either.

What’s the secret? Put simply, taking a good long look at your finances could generate that sum, in just one day. Here’s how. Get your bank statements out and schedule out all your regular outgoings (direct debits and standing orders). Start saving • Look at your gym membership fees. Many of us sign up for a membership, but lose the habit in a few months. However, we keep paying because ‘one day we will get back to it’. That’s a waste of cash, as there are many, free or cheap ways to exercise. Consider buying a set of free weights for home use, joining a park-based exercise class, or simply take up walking or running with a friend or relative. • Next look for any charity donations that you may have signed up too many years ago, but aren’t really where your heart is. It used to be easy to commit to just a small amount each month, but these can add up. • The next step is to look at your utility

bills. There are several websites that compare prices from a wide range of suppliers, and we have a couple of local brokers who can do the job for you if you have limited free time. Contracts end and utility companies are usually quite happy if you simply default to their standard tariff as you’ll end up paying more. If they are not yet due for renewal, make a diary note for the earliest time you can review them, and set a reminder for that date on your smartphone! (Oh, and do the same for any phone contract too!) • The same applies to your home phone/internet/TV package. Do you really need all those channels? Can a bundle save you money or are there elements that you never use, regardless of how cheap they might appear? • If you run a business, look at your structure and see if you can save money by converting to a partnership or a limited company. Perhaps you run a limited company and because income has dropped it may be better to revert to a sole trader. Online tax calculators can indicate whether this is a question to explore, and many accountants offer a free initial consultation at which you can confirm your figures. • If you are employed, could you save money by entering a salary sacrifice scheme? Although the range of benefits have been drastically curtailed from April, there are still some good savings to be had (think pensions, child care and cycle to work schemes).

Give it a try Many of you may be thinking that my headline figure is somewhat optimistic, but the savings do add up. A typical householder can save around £2,000 per year by looking at these areas, and it takes about a day’s work to get it all done. £2,000 for 8 hours’ work is £250 per hour! I’d be interested to know how you get on, so do let me know. Happy saving day! Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

Love of power or the power of love... I spend a lot of time on Cross Rhythms programmes asking questions such as what is life about; why are we here and what happens when we pop our clogs because at the end of it all I don’t believe our life is based on purely what we see through our natural eyes. We need wisdom for this life journey as much as we need knowledge. The proverbial phrase ‘To err is human’ is often heard in its fuller form ‘To err is human; to forgive, divine.’ This is a relevant phrase as we approach Easter. Forgiveness is a powerfully spiritual and moral process which can produce the most liberating of circumstances in both individuals and society at large. In recent times, when apartheid was being abolished, the late Nelson Mandela walked the talk not only personally, but led South Africa into a time of greater peace when it could have experienced a national blood bath. There are physical and moral laws we

are all encouraged to live by which are experienced through life itself. From a spiritual and social perspective, my life experiences have taught me that to journey through life with positive outcomes is often a question of making right choices. Sometimes when life and people treat us unjustly, I have a choice to forgive and let it go. It is not always easy and is always painful, but it does do something inside of us which can be incredible when we forgive.

understand the life around us and the part we play in the scheme of things.

It can produce genuine freedom as it did for Nelson Mandela and his nation. However, you need something bigger than yourself for this to work effectively. Bitterness of soul is like taking poison whilst waiting for the other person to die. It rots a person on the inside, and can lead to a cycle where hurt people hurt people. Without this freedom to make choices and exercise our free will, we can find it very difficult to

I also find that making right and wrong personal choices significantly helps me in terms of understanding my own identity, value, worth and relational interactions.

We are all students in the university of life whether we like it or not. If we have the hope or desire to keep on learning, no matter how old we are and especially if we have a social group of good friends we relate to, we get a sense of the people it is easier to be around and those who are problematic. But hey, that is the cost of being human because to err is human. Some of us work hard with those who are difficult to get along with and guess what, often that person can be ourselves.

My spiritual experience teaches me that I am a work in progress. Like everybody else I have good and bad traits and my accountability is to a higher power and those around Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. He is also a Fellow me, which in of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Listen to his Cross Rhythms my case is my Experience programmes on 96.3FM or online at www.crossrhythms.co.uk/ relationship plymouth. Also, download Cross Rhythms Plymouth app from Google with Jesus Christ; my wife Play and the Apple app store. and family and

extended relationships. My hope, through this relational accountability, is that He is changing me by his grace and power of love as I endeavour to walk in trust with Him and His teaching. It is my response to Him that I surrender my love of the power of self-centeredness so that He gives me the power to love others, including myself. God doesn’t expect us to be doormats, but He does expect us to understand the spiritual reality of life. Easter celebrates the most powerful person whose legacy has changed the world and who entered our world as 100% divine and 100% human, who laid aside His power and submitted his will to the crucifixion on a cross in agreement with His Father’s plan of redemption. This then led to an understanding of enduring love, through the forgiveness of sins, which millions upon millions of people throughout the ages and across the world have experienced in terms of genuine spiritual freedom and vision. Happy Easter as they say in Russia, because He has risen. Death has given over to Love.

‘School meals still excellent value, despite price increase’ CATERed, who are responsible for school meals in the majority of city schools, opened the doors to the local press to show that despite a price rise of just ten pence per meal from April 18, they are still excellent value.

who pay for their child’s school lunch will understand and continue to support the service which we know offers fantastic choice, great value for money and helps children be ready to learn.”

The event was held at Stoke Damerel Primary School and pupils could be seen enjoying their two course meal that will now be £2.10 at primary schools and special schools. The price rise works out at 50 pence a week, a five percent rise, and despite the increase, school meal prices in Plymouth schools will still be lower than or the same as those in surrounding areas including Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and North Somerset. It is the first increase to the price of school meals in six years and will not affect pupils in all age groups who are entitled to free school meals.

Brad continued: “For just £2.10 a day, that’s less than a cup of takeaway coffee, each child will have a great tasting, freshly prepared two-course school lunch. CATERed is also one of the few providers in the region which offer pupils a drink; with fruit juice (orange and Fairtrade apple juice) organic milk and fruit-based, iced drinks (99 per cent apple juice with natural colours) offered on a daily basis. Many other providers simply offer water.”

Brad Pearce, managing director at CATERed said: “This increase is as a result of rising food and ingredient prices over the last quarter and into the foreseeable future which are averaging over nine per cent, with many commodities significantly higher. This is something that everyone will also be experiencing in their own household shopping baskets. “We understand that any increase in costs hits the disposable income of families across the city and, whilst this is the first increase since 2011, it is something that the Board have been working hard to avoid up to this point. We hope that those families

Brad told the Shopper that the meals are prepared using local produce, even the fish served on a Friday is landed at Plymouth or Newlyn.

Richard Marsh, headteacher at Stoke Damerel Primary School said that “A hot meal every day is a key priority at the school. Over 80% of the schools pupils take up the offer every day.” Judith Harwood, Plymouth City Council’s assistant director for Education, Participation and Skills, and one of the CATERed Board directors said: “We knew that the school funding reforms were going to create significant funding disparities and risked individual schools having to significantly reduce the food offer or potentially close hot food services. This is why we are so proud of what we have been able to achieve by setting up

CATERed as a local authority-trading co-operative owned jointly by 67 schools and the council.”

Youngsters at Stoke Damerel Primary School enjoying their lunch

CATERed was launched in April 2015 to ensure that all schools were able to provide great tasting, freshly prepared school food using locally and regionally sourced fresh seasonal ingredients with over 80 per cent of the lunchtime menu cooked from scratch every day.”

each school received a formula funded budget from which to meet their statutory obligation to provide benefitbased free school meals to eligible pupils and paid for meals (upon request) which meet the Government’s mandatory standards for school food. CATERed provide an average of 12,000 meals each day of the academic year (2.3m meals a year). School meals in all but five of the city’s primary schools/academies plus five special schools are provided by CATERed, which employs over 270 staff and is an accredited UK Living Wage employer.
