Major improvement works on the A386 Tavistock Road and William Prance Road will get under way at the beginning of January.

The Derriford Transport Scheme will reduce congestion along Tavistock Road and provide better public transport, walking and cycling links – improving journey times for all users. Extra lanes will be created and bus priority measures will be introduced at Derriford Roundabout and the William Prance Road junction to reduce journey times and improve service reliability. Modern and efficient traffic signals will be installed, along with new, marked cycle lanes and new pedestrian crossings. Walking and cycling improvements will also extend northwards along the A386 from Derriford Roundabout towards The George Park and Ride. Amey will be carrying out the works, which will take place between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and on the occasional Saturday between 8.30am and 1pm. The aim is to keep two traffic lanes open in both directions along Tavistock Road for the majority of the time to keep traffic flowing and minimise disruption. To allow this, the bus lanes on both sides of the road between Budshead Road and Derriford Roundabout will be suspended throughout the works, so they can be used by all traffic. Some overnight closures will be needed to help minimise disruption to traffic flow during the day – these will be advertised in advance using notices on site. The speed limit will be reduced from 40mph to 30mph throughout the works and there will be no right turn into Charlton Road from Tavistock Road between March and December. Northbound vehicles will need to go around Derriford Roundabout and travel back down Tavistock Road to access this Charlton Road. A route through the road works has been agreed with the emergency services to ensure blue light vehicles are not impacted upon. From March to September, the Tavistock Road entrance to William Prance Road will be closed and access will

only be available via Brest Road. The scheme will take around 15 months to complete. Anyone travelling along this route is advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “The A386 is the main route to and from the north of the city – including Derriford Hospital, the University of St Mark and St John and the Plymouth Science Park. It is often congested, especially at peak times and future growth in the area will put even more pressure on this busy part of our transport network. This scheme, together with our other planned infrastructure improvements, will help to keep traffic moving, improve bus journey times and reliability and provide better walking and cycling facilities along this key route.” Derriford is identified in the Joint Local Plan as a key

area to deliver growth in housing, employment and associated infrastructure for the city and is undergoing vast change. A vision to establish a new heart for the north of the city was first proposed in Plymouth’s Core Strategy in 2007. Central to this vision is a transport network that can connect people to new homes, jobs and leisure and health facilities. The Derriford Transport Scheme is part of a master plan of highway improvements that will help to achieve this and deliver jobs and homes in the north of the city. The Heart-of-the-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) is contributing £10.16 million towards the £12.72 million scheme. For further information on the scheme and the traffic management plans, visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/ derrifordtransportscheme.

City groups get cash boost from Vital Sparks Four more Plymouthbased groups have been awarded Vital Sparks bursaries to help realise or kickstart their community arts projects. North Prospect Community Choir, Red Velvet Cinema, Devonport Lifehouse and Mutley Matters will all benefit from funding for their initiatives which include combating isolation, tackling mental ill health and championing community cohesion. Vital Sparks is a city-wide partnership project between Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Culture designed to inspire arts, culture and creativity throughout Plymouth.

Since launching in December 2013 its bursaries have supported 33 different community projects across the city. More than 3,500 people have so far taken part in over 250 workshops. More than 50 different artists have been given 200 days of paid employment which have resulted in 21 new commissions and over 2,000 performance or exhibition days.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, cabinet member for culture said: “The figures for Vital Sparks are phenomenal. We are so proud to be involved in a scheme which helps make a difference in peoples neighbourhoods and really pleased to see four more really worthy projects added to

Five star hotel planned • continued from front page

Henley Real Estate is a London-based specialist development company, which has a track record of delivery of a variety of schemes including hotel, residential and retail. It has a combined portfolio of £390 million including international developments The council bought the Quality Hotel site in January last year and by summer demolition of the derelict 1970s ten storey tower was underway. Marketing of the site began almost as soon as the property was acquired and the council worked with hotel expert JLL to develop the brief to enable the city to attract the right developer and hotel operator. The company expect to submit their planning application in the New Year and subject to consent being granted, want to start work towards the end of next year.

the Vital Sparks family.”

The bursaries awarded in the sixth round of Vital Sparks funding are: North Prospect Community Choir: £2,509 This brand new choir based at the Beacon Community Hub has been awarded funds to enable it to provide North Prospect residents with the opportunity to sing and make friends. This new venture has already been booked to lead carol singing at school concerts and Christmas fairs. As the choir becomes established it hopes to attract people of all ages from across the city. Red Velvet Cinema: £2,046 This pilot project will bring classic film screenings to local elderly residents in Devonport. Film screenings in a neighbourhood café will help to combat isolation. Along with enjoying a movie, film buffs will have time and space to socialise and form new friendships. Devonport Lifehouse Homeless Centre: £2,750 Professional drama tutors in collaboration with On Course South West will be using their Vital Sparks funding to explore the experience of being homeless with residents of the Lifehouse in Devonport.

This therapeutic project which tackles mental ill health will also give residents the chance to rehearse in a real theatre environment and enjoy a theatre visit.

University of Plymouth Students’ Union: £500 A Vital Sparks bursary of £500 will support a crowdfunder campaign for a memorial in Moor View Park, Mutley Plain. Coordinated by Mutley Matters, the group has been working with local artist Sarah Jane Hodge to produce a design for a bench to mark the passing of Jeanne Hinton. Jeanne was a well respected community activist who championed community cohesion in her ever-changing corner of the city. Dom Jinks, chief executive for Plymouth Culture said: “What Vital Sparks has achieved and enabled other people to achieve in the last three years is really impressive. The key to its success is its bursary scheme which brings communities and artists together and enables more people to enjoy and participate in some brilliant creative experiences.” Applications for the seventh round of Vital Sparks funding are now open. The deadline is April 30 2017. For more information about Vital Sparks visit www.plymouthculture.co.uk

Chess – the epic musical by ABBA grandmasters is coming to Plymouth The music of legendary ABBA song-writing partnership Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus comes to Plymouth from March 29 to April 1 when the award-winning music company PGS presents a production of the West End blockbusting musical ‘Chess’. With none other than Sir Tim Rice completing the songwriting team on this spectacular show it is hardly any wonder that it was a huge hit when it debuted in London in 1986. The popularity of the show was in no small part due to the memorable score which features songs such as ‘I Know Him So Well’, ‘One Night in Bangkok’ and ‘Anthem’. Chess consistently rates highly in polls of favourite musicals. Tim Rice himself has remarked that it is a personal favourite. While ‘Mamma Mia’ has achieved huge success on both sides of the Atlantic with the stellar pop hits of ABBA as it’s musical backbone, for discerning fans of musical theatre Chess is the intense, powerful, original musical from ABBA’s genius song-writing team. With such high praise being lavished it is perhaps surprising that Chess still awaits a major West End revival. Despite that frankly baffling fact, Chess has consolidated its reputation in recent years as something of a ‘cult classic’ with regional music company’s taking up the challenge of presenting this tale of passion, betrayal and cold-war political intrigue set against the backdrop of the world chess championship. Acclaimed director Alan Spencer returns to Plymouth and PGS again with his trademark stylish and visually striking approach. Alan and PGS have enjoyed a particularly fruitful partnership in recent years which has seen the company expand its repertoire from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas including a production in 2015 of Bizet’s tour-de-force of Grand Opera, ‘Carmen’ which won enthusiastic reviews both local and nationally. PGS musical director Jane Warwick also returns with the PGS Orchestra and a cast featuring local seasoned performers Darren Lake, Mike Noble, Helen Haviland and Pete Clements to bring the pulsating rock score to life in what promises to be an exciting production of this classic of 1980’s musical theatre. Chess - The Musical is at The Devonport Playhouse, Plymouth from March 29 to April 1. Box Office: 01752 600166. Book at www.plymouthgilbertandsullivan.com

Presenting Sweeney Todd - the Demon Barber of Fleet Street Sounds Musical Theatre Company will present Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in March. Full of exhilarating music, romance and wit this intriguing tale tells what happens when vengeful Sweeney Todd and the unscrupulous Mrs Lovett’s combine his Gentleman’s Barbershop and her Pie Shop in a very sinister partnership. Performances take place at the Devonport Playhouse from March 15 to 18. Tickets from Box Office 01752 510934. Evening 7.30pm: Adults: £13, Concessions: £12, Under 18: £7. Matinee 2.30pm: Adults: £12, Concessions: £11, Under 18: £7. Discounts for 10 + Musical Director, Marcus Alleyne, co-director Amanda Paddison, supported by a 10 piece orchestra. 4

Tracking back in time with new book from Bernard Mills Painstakingly researched, Bernard Mills’s second volume of Backtracking Then & Now, takes readers on a railway journey around the western reaches of Plymouth and beyond. It’s a fine companion to the last tome – produced by Pen & Ink Publishing in 2013 – which focused on the east around Friary, Laira and the Plym. Once again it should appeal to those interested in local history and the changing industrial landscape, whether or not they are railway enthusiasts. The route this time starts at Plymouth’s North Road Station and goes west to the Cornwall Loop Triangle and into Millbay and the docks. Returning to the Cornwall Loop Junction it follows the former GWR main line through the western suburbs to the River Tamar, across Brunel’s magnificent bridge to Saltash Station.

lamenting many of the dramatic changes that have occurred along the way. However, Bernard delights in recalling experiences from his working life on the railway and he interweaves them into the narrative. This gives the book personality, charm and a life beyond the factual Then and Now descriptions. As well as learning about his time as a railway clerk at Saltash Station we discover how he was encouraged to familiarise himself with the workings of the signal box at Keyham Station Signal Box which, as it happens, was very close to where his love affair with trains began: “The first decade of my life was spent in Victory Street, with only Fleet Street in between home and the railway line,” he writes. “When I was in the pushchair my grandfather, William Mills, took me here to watch the trains go by and that, quite simply, is how it all started...”

It then goes out on the Tamar Road Bridge and follows the former LSWR route back through St Budeaux, and the now completely expunged route through Weston Mill and Ford to Devonport Junction. What is so obvious about this account is not only Bernard’s eye for detail but his passion for his subject – this is a very personal account. Having had the amazing foresight to record the scene on his camera as Beeching was making his cuts 50 years ago, it is to some 150 of these locations that he has returned to capture the same scene today ...

In June this year, after 18 months of campaigning against the proposal to build 65 houses on the Greenfield known as Allern Lane (north of the Village of Tamerton Foliot), South Hams District Council finally bowed to public pressure and refused the unwanted application. The main concerns were visual impact, loss of greenspace, traffic and drainage. Over 400 objections had been lodged and over £2,000 had been raised by local residents - running Coffee mornings, Spooky walks, mufti days and collections to fight these proposals. Several packed public meetings delivered the message loud and clear to the developers and finally after a long and sometimes nervous wait, South Hams District Council have confirmed that no appeal has been lodged and the case is now closed.

HOME BASED CARERS NEEDED

Robert Plumb, Chair of Tamerton Foliot Village Conservation Society said: “The people of Tamerton Foliot have won a momentous victory and with the ongoing support of Plymouth City Council and South Hams District Council we can work together to ensure this type of inappropriate development does not happen in the future.” Johnny Mercer MP said: “I am delighted that the efforts of Tamerton Foliot residents and local activists have paid off and the development has been halted. “I was pleased to be able to support the local community by hosting public meetings in the village, enabling residents to have their voices heard by Taylor Wimpey and the planning authority.”

New gym opens at Plympton Swimming Pool Could you be a Shared Lives carer?

The brand new 30-station gym was due to be officially opened at Plympton Swimming Pool on December 19.

Our carers support adults with learning disabilities, people with mental health issues and people with needs related to older age including dementia

Sports and leisure operator, Everyone Active, which manages the swimming pool on behalf of Plymouth City Council, has invested over £200,000 to provide the new facility, which uses a modular building and is planned to be in place for an initial period of five years.

We offer the chance to work in your own home, with ongoing training and support as well as weekly fees.

David Greenwood, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “This is the first time Plympton Swimming Pool will offer a gym and we’re very excited to see it open.

Your personal approach and caring experience (whether paid or unpaid) are what matter most to us - but you will also need a spare room.

The popular centre also offers a 25 metre community swimming pool, which provides award-winning ASA swimming lessons.

Our carers come from all walks of life but what they all have in common is their experience, knowledge and passion for providing the very best service. 31/03/2017

A new fitness suite has opened for local gym-goers in Plympton.

Call us on 01626 360170 www.sharedlivessw.org.uk/carers

The facility has all the amenities of a high quality gym, including full air-conditioning, television screens, a sound system and a wide range of Technogym equipment.

“The new gym looks fantastic and we’re confident it’ll go a long way to encouraging more people to get active in different ways.”

Over 1,200 children are currently registered on the lessons. The new gym will be open alongside the swimming pool from 7am until 10pm Monday to Friday and from 8am until 5pm at the weekend. Memberships incorporating access to both the gym and the pool are available. The gym was officially opened by Councillor Glenn Jordan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture. He said: “Anything that makes it easier for people to stay fit and active has to be a good thing and I’m sure local residents will welcome this great new facility.” The Plymouth Shopper

She explains, “His last days and hours were here with us and the animals, but only because we had the help from the wonderful people at St Luke’s. “The way their nurses Derek and Cathy came in and talked to him on his level, cooed over his cattle and quietly sat at our kitchen table offering support and advice was just what he needed. Without them I don’t know how we would have coped.” Just after her father’s death, Sandra spotted it was the St Luke’s Coffee Sandra Fry (right) Community Clubs at William Sutton Memorial Hall, Shelley Way St Budeaux Gardening group Mondays 10.30am to 1pm open to all to come and enjoy some gardening on the grounds of the hall. As a prize winner, Euan was able to travel to the Houses of Parliament and was given a tour of the wonderful building. Mrs Gilbert, head of religious studies at Lipson Co-operative Academy, accompanied Euan on his visit and was overjoyed at the experience for Euan, a great ambassador for the school. “We are so proud of his achievements and it was a great opportunity to explore the political and social history within our capital, taking tours of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Free bag of chips if you recycle your Christmas tree… Plymouth residents will be able to recycle their Christmas trees differently this year and get a free bag of chippings in return. Wood-chipping machines will be on a mini tour of Plymouth as part of a trial scheme to dispose of Christmas trees responsibly. Teams from the Council will take the machines to locations across the city from January 9 to make it easier for residents to get rid of their real trees once the festive fortnight is over. And for the keen gardeners, there is also a chance to grab a bag of free wood chippings in return. Any unused chippings will then be used in shrub-beds across the city and offered to local volunteer gardening groups and allotment owners. Cabinet member for Street Scene and the Environment, Councillor Mike Leaves said: “We are trying out something different this year that will help our gardeners as well as make our city a little bit greener. We need to be more efficient with our services and make savings where we can. “Please don’t leave your old trees next to your bins as they will not be collected by our teams.” Although there will be no collection rounds, people will be able to get rid of their trees near their homes. People are being asked to drop off trees to a special fenced area at these locations below on or near the set date. They can also still take used trees to Chelson Meadow and Weston Mill household recycling centres. The wood-chipping machines will be available on the following dates: Monday January 9 Plympton St Mary car park Tuesday January 10 Plymstock Broadway car park Wednesday January 11 Honicknowle – Ringmore Way car park (next to Honiton Close) from 8.30am to 11.30am Ham – the Council’s Outland Road depot from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Thursday January 12 Crownhill Village car park from 8.30am to 3.30pm Tamar Bridge car park from 12.30 to 3.30pm Friday January 13 Brickfields car park from 8.30am to 11.30am Church Street car park, Stoke from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Monday January 16 Civic Centre (rear) car park from 8.30am to 11.30am North Hill car park from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Tuesday January 17 Council’s Prince Rock depot from 8.30am to 11.30am Trefussis Park car park from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Wednesday January 18 Southway Shops car park 8.30am to 11.30am Fort Austin car park from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Thursday January 19 Outland Road depot 8.30am to 11.30am Trefussis Park car park from 12.30am to 3.30pm Councillor Leaves added: “This is a trial to provide an extra service to our residents while staying within our means.” If you want chippings remember to bring your empty garden waste bags with you so that these can be used to transport the chippings back home.

City centre dementia friendly cafe and information hub is planned A unique project will see the launch of of a cafe and dementia information hub in Plymouth city centre in 2017. The new Moments Café will be opened in New George Street, next door to Plymouth City Council’s One Stop Shop. Memory Matters South West CIC have been working on the feasibility of the project for over 18 months and are now moving ahead with the next stage. A Crowdfunder appeal has already raised nearly £12,000, easily exceeding its target of £8,000. With the premises secured, leases signed and plans drawn up, the build stage will start over the next few months. The concept is a working bistro/café downstairs which is open to the public - with an environment for all to enjoy, but thoughtfully designed to be dementia friendly. Anyone can pop in for a cup of tea and reminisce or just enjoy looking at timelines around the walls, sitting in one of the specially designed decade zones, each with objects on display from

those eras. All the while enjoying home cooked familiar food that our parents and grandparents used to make. All profits will be returned to provide services to those with dementia in the community – ensuring a sustainable service that does not rely on grants and therefore will not suddenly end. The project will need everyone’s support to ensure its success Children can enjoy the historic feel of the cafe, students will enjoy the retro element and for others it may be a walk down memory lane! It will be a social venue to meet for coffee or lunch and a place where visitors can

Council steps up its campaign on organ donation Plymouth City Council is calling on the Government to consider a ‘soft opt out’ system on organ donation, following the recent launch of the #TimeToSign organ donation campaign. The council has put forward a motion backing a move away from people having to ‘opt-in’ to organ donation, to the system backed by the British Medical Association (BMA) of a ‘soft opt out system’, under which there would be a presumption in favour of consent for organ donation unless a person had registered an objection in advance. This ‘soft opt out system’ has already been adopted in Wales and as well as the BMA, is backed by several major charities including the British Heart Foundation, Kidney Research UK, Diabetes UK, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The council is being backed in its call by Jillian Oxley from Plymouth, who lost her son Jon Paul, aged just 21, in 2012 to Cystic Fibrosis. Jillian said: “My son had waited 18 months for a lung transplant, but no suitable donor had been found. Although we did have five calls during that period from potential donors, sadly none were a suitable match. “I think we should have an opt-out system like they do in Wales and Scotland, but people do also need to speak to their loved ones about it. I have been campaigning since my son Jon Paul died in 2012 and presented a petition of 1,000 signatures to Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary. “ There are currently 17 people waiting for a transplant in Plymouth and nine people have died whilst waiting for a transplant over the past 5 years. Just this year, since April 2016, 11 people in Plymouth have received a transplant, while 149 have undergone a transplant in the past 5 years.

Member for Health and Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “People are dying every day waiting for an organ transplant and this is not acceptable, we need to get more people to register for organ donation, and we believe that the system needs changing. While 86% of people agree that organ donation is important, around 37% of people who are willing to be organ donors say that they haven’t got around to joining the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Dr Ruth Harrell, Interim Director of Public Health for Plymouth City Council, said: “We urge everyone in Plymouth to get behind this campaign. Three people die in the UK every day while waiting for an organ transplant and in Plymouth alone, there are 17 people waiting for a transplant.

“The BMA has long advocated a ‘soft’ opt-out system with safeguards for organ donation and they continue to believe this is the best option for the UK to reduce the shortage of organs. Under the BMA’s proposals, if an objection had not been registered by the deceased, family members would still be given the opportunity to confirm whether the individual had any unregistered objection, as an extra safeguard, before any procedures went ahead.” For more information on how to register now visit http://bit.ly/2gyEByr or call 0300 123 23 23

Jack & Jills is a safe haven for children Recent research is claiming that the direction a life takes directly relates to the experiences and performance of the person as a young child, writes Karen Pilkington.

Whilst many of us will debate the findings of this recent report from New Zealand, it is good news to hear that Early Years Care and Education is being given the spotlight it deserves. One such organisation, Jack and Jills Childcare, the Royal Naval Preschool Learning Organisation Charity, is testimony to the passion and expertise that leaders in childcare and pre-school education now have. Jack and Jills has seven sites around the city with two sites based in Plymstock, operating collaboratively and a short walk away from each other. The Radford site, opened in 1985, is purpose built as a nursery and takes children from two years old; and the Goosewell site, opened in 2012, operates in a designated classrooms within Goosewell Primary School, so it is uniquely able to support the transition from pre school to primary.

Both sites work carefully together: many children begin in the Radford Jack and Jill’s pre-school before transitioning at 3 years to the Goosewell preschool in the academic year before Foundation. Those children that have attended Jack and Jills Radford will receive priority at Jack and Jills Goosewell. Both pre-schools are especially sensitive to the needs of families, recognising the Emotional Cycle of Separation both civilian and service families can experience when a loved one goes away.

The ECS is a well researched understanding of the traumas and emotional highs and lows experienced, not just by the adults in the family, but also by the children involved and is something that all the staff at both pre-schools have personal experience and professional training in recognising and supporting.

Goosewell School is one of the largest primaries in the area, with 625 children enrolled, so careful transition is vital for the many youngsters who will join one of the three Foundation classes.

Sarah Statham, manager of the Radford Jack and Jills recalls a recent event when a father who was expected home after an extended deployment did not return at the expected time explaining, “Most of the staff here are service spouses or ex service personnel and we completely empathise with these kind of situations. We are on hand with a cup of tea and a listening ear for all our families and we work closely with outside agencies offering all families support through difficult times.

Jack and Jills has been delivering an education programme that helps children

Sarah Pile, manager of the Goosewell pre-school agrees, adding, “Our staff are

very long standing and can provide fantastic support to children adapting to loved ones leaving and returning home after some time or being separated due to family break ups. We also provide an extra layer of support sending pictures and copies of reports to separated parents and can adapt to the individual needs of the family.

Both managers are keen to point out the particular benefits their respective buildings have to offer the children in their care.

here also experience hot meals in the School canteen and regularly meet the staff and children in the Foundation classes of Goosewell School, with their activities mirroring the school year. Sarah Pile explained: “ We have a close relationship and connection to Goosewell school to get our children used to the much larger environment of a primary school in a safe and fun way. “Starting primary school is a big step for both the parent(s) and the child but the opportunities and support Jack and Jill’s are able to provide up until this point ensure that this is a smooth and positive experience for both the child and family alike, especially for those having to deal with separation as well.” Both pre-school managers reflect a pride and passion for their work that sets them and their organisation up as one of the really good providers of childcare in the city. A quote from the most recent Ofsted report said, “children make very good progress in their personal, social and emotional development.” And perhaps the best comment comes from Sarah Statham herself which is: “It’s a privilege to care for and educate our children and we all take great pride in this”. Both pre-schools welcome enquiries regarding admissions, currently have some places available and can be contacted on 01752 403394 (Goosewell) or 01752 481152 (Radford). Goosewell is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm and Radford from 9.15 to 3pm Mon – Thurs , Friday 9.15am to 11.45am both pre-schools are term time only.

Great Western Railways unveils new ‘green’ initiative

Bike hire hub launched at Plymouth railway station Great Western Railway has teamed up with a local bike hire company and an app developer to launch a new bike hire hub at Plymouth Station. The hub adds to the existing bike hire service provided by Plymouth Bike Hire at its base in Coypool, the start of the Plym Valley Trail. The new service will enabe rail users to get to great places in a sustainable way. Passengers can use the Donkey Republic bike app to locate, hire and unlock a bike 24/7; and all by using their phone. The new scheme was launched by Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile, City Council Leader Ian Bowyer, and representatives from the companies involved. Oliver Colvile said: “I am very pleased that Plymouth has a new bike scheme at Plymouth Station in conjunction with Plymouth Bike Hire. This move is great for the environment and for the people of Plymouth who want to enjoy the benefits of having a bike without having to buy one. There are lots of wonderful places to see and visit in Plymouth that can be accessed by bike.”

‘Rewarding’ evening as a year of succ Stoke Damerel Community College has been marking its students’ achievements across the curriculum at its annual Celebration Evening. CSgt Lee Spencer RM was special guest speaker at the event where more than 150 students were recognised for their achievements in a range of subjects and their contribution to College life.

Cllr Bowyer added: “If you haven’t been on a bike for a few years, think about having a go. We’re getting more cycle friendly as a city and now have some incredible routes to try, including the new Laira rail bridge and the stunning waterfront route.

Cgst Spencer is a Royal Marine who lost his leg after he was hit by flying debris when he stopped to help the victims of a road accident in 2014.

“It’s good to see more cycle hire spring up for people to get pedalling – it’s great for both locals and visitors to see Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City from the saddle. “It’s particularly handy to have bikes at the rail station so that people can get on and get out there.”

Since his recovery he has travelled the country as a fundraiser and public speaker and spoke to the packed assembly hall, filled with students’ family and friends, about life beyond injury with the message that hard work, determination and a positive outlook can spell success.

Plymouth Station manager Mark Chorley said: “We, as a business and as individuals, have a responsibility to reduce the impact we have on our environment. “Working with Plymouth Bike Hire, I am delighted to help launch this service to our passengers and to encourage cycling while enabling more people to take advantage 10

Charity appeals for new carers Award winning Devon-based charity Shared Lives South West has appealed for new carers to join and support the organisation, following an influx of new users to its unique service. The charity offers accommodation, care and support, within the family homes of its Shared Lives carers to vulnerable adults. It carefully matches service users with its carers, taking into account lifestyle, location, hobbies and interests as well as ensuring their specific care needs can be met. Shared Lives helps adults provide long term accommodation and short breaks for people with

learning disabilities, mental health issues or other support needs such as dementia. With 300 carers currently on Shared Lives South West’s books and around 250 carers, the charity is continually growing and expanding. Plymouth carer Teresa Walker, who cares for three Shared Lives users in her home, loves her role as a carer. Before becoming a Shared Lives carer Teresa had a residential home, but when regulations and policies changed, she decided Shared Lives could be the way forward. “If it wasn’t for services like Shared Lives, I believe people would be lost in the system, which would be very sad,” said Teresa. “To have someone live with you and

make a real difference to their life is really rewarding. The support you get from Shared Lives is amazing and you never need to worry.” She said to be a Shared Lives carer you need three main qualities as a starting point. “You need to be patient, understanding and have the time to give,” said Teresa. Roma, who has lived with Teresa for almost 30 years, says she feels contented and happy. “I’m very happy here and I have the independence if I want it,” she said. Chocolate delights in Crownhill

Plymouth has a wealth of unsung business heroes, often working incredibly long hours on the front line serving customers, and then coming home to spend even more time dreaming up new and refreshing ideas to take their business forward. One such local entrepreneur is Ross Symons of Jollies Sweets in Crownhill Village. Ross has run the independent sweet store in the village for a number of years now, initially serving the trend for American makes of candy, as well as sweet shop favourites. He is now branching into an area of confectionery which is very much a passion for him – artisan Belgian chocolate. Having a keen palate himself, Ross was frustrated to see so many of us just grab a box of chocolates from the high street or supermarket without much thought. He explains that mass produced chocolate, even that which calls itself Belgian, is light years away from the real thing in terms of taste.

Snowdrop Appeal receives big cash boost thanks to fund raising by young legals

Indeed eating high quality chocolate is a great way of keeping calorie intake down as one or two really beautiful chocolates can curb and satisfy that craving for something sweet, whereas you often find mindlessness takes over when you eat bland chocolates.

Plans for a bereavement suite at Derriford Hospital are going ahead – thanks to the efforts of a group of young legal professionals in the city. The Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division raised a total of over £4,260 for The Snowdrop Appeal, the neonatal and early life loss charity.

Belgian chocolate is made with 100% cocoa butter without any vegetable oils, which leaves a much fresher aftertaste in your mouth. Belgium invented the praline in 1912 and soon became known for making the best chocolates in the world. However, as with everything, quality now varies tremendously from mass produced for supermarkets to much smaller hand finished operations. Ross has researched his market carefully and buys stock from several firms, ensuring that he can maintain good variation, and the best possible quality for a reasonable price. One such firm, Confiserie Elise only make truffles, pralines and marzipans, so the quality and flavour has been honed over the years to produce a masterful product. Other brands that Ross sells are the world famous Pralibel, and Van Coillie, as well as English chocolatiers Kimberleys

The Appeal was launched by Greg and Jan Phillips in memory of their daughter Jasmine and in the same week that the cheque was presented to the couple they received the news that their efforts since 2009 have paid off. Sue Williams, director of midwifery and associate director of nursing at Derriford Hospital, has confirmed that Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust have now agreed that the development of the full bereavement suite will go ahead – much earlier than the couple had anticipated. Ross Symons with one of his chocolate boxes

who learnt the trade from Mr Van Coillie himself. Ross sells his chocolates from just 65p each and has one customer who pops in daily to pick up just 2 to have with her afternoon tea. He also stocks a no added sugar range made with Stevia that he asserts is indistinguishable from the real thing; as well as chocolate macaroons and sugar mice to name but a few.

And he has bought in some amazing boxes and packaging to create a bespoke and beautifully packaged gift for friends and family – although, of course everyone reading this will have already got Christmas well and truly sorted......or maybe not! Ross can be contacted at the shop at 26 Morshead Road, Crownhill Village, by calling 01752 396702, oe online at www.jollies-sweets.co.uk or on Facebook.

cess at Stoke Damerel is celebrated a fantastic evening, but more importantly in the polite confidence that the young students displayed throughout. That confidence comes from self-belief and it’s that self-belief that will ultimately enable the students to go forward and make a success of their lives.

Greg and Jen Phillips said: “The Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division had some crazy, wild and wacky events and put so much hard work and effort into raising money for our appeal. We cannot thank them enough for all their efforts and all of us at Snowdrop want to say a big thank you for everyone’s efforts.” The Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division is a network of young legal professionals who offer support to each other and promote the values and benefits of the legal profession in the city, by arranging networking and social events, and fundraising for their chosen charity of the year. The 2015-2016 committee year saw the efforts of the team from law firms across Plymouth raising much needed funds for the neonatal death and early life loss charity, the Snowdrop Appeal, in their bid to develop the bereavement suite at Derriford Hospital. The twelve strong team first hosted a number of events including a charity quiz at the Treasury, a Mad Hatters Tea Party at Plymouth Albion Rugby Club, which attracted 1300 people, a Great Gatsby Summer soiree at the Loft and a number of networking events.

“I hope that by telling my story, and being able to show that selfbelief, hard work and resilience in the face of adversity will always pay dividends, I will have been a very small part of their success.”

Helena Campbell of Wolferstans Solicitors, charities secretary for the committee said: “Being able to bring the community together for a sole cause was incredibly rewarding, and something we hope to repeat in future years.

Csgt Spencer’s speech to the audience of more than 400 students, staff and parents was part of a packed evening which featured a variety of video and musical performances - including an impressive rendition of Nessun Dorma by Year 8 student Sam Rickard - as well as the presentation of a number of special annual awards, including the Roma French Award.

“Greg and Jen are an inspiring couple and it was a pleasure to work alongside them and raise funds and help them to reach their goal.”

“More than 150 of our students were recognised for their hard work by the whole teaching staff from every curriculum area and there were 250 proud family members present on the night to give their support to them all,” said Assistant Vice Principal Steve Giles, who organises the event each year. “I’d like to thank our students, their families and our staff for all the effort they put into making this such a special evening.”

MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

2017: So what now?

Debt Advice update Citizens Advice Plymouth works with the Money Advice Service Debt Advice Project and from the beginning of January to the end of November 2016 they had 1185 debt enquiries. This is only over one project, in one organisation of the four branches of the Advice Plymouth Partnership. As you can see Citizens Advice is no stranger to the problems people face regarding debt and there’s usually an influx of enquires after the Christmas period. In January 2016 106 debt enquires were received as part of MASDAP. Christmas is a fantastic time of year to celebrate love and family, however there’s always a temptation to overspend and for many people they simply can’t afford to. This overspending and management of finances leads to debt across the board for all expenses. A common problem seen at Advice Plymouth around Christmas is Credit Card debt, which people are unable to pay back. Over 70% of Britons surveyed by National Debtline said they used a credit card to pay for presents. The more prominent and perhaps more concerning issue is when an individual can’t afford to pay household bills such as council tax and utilities due to overspending at Christmas. The National Debtline survey found that 1 in 20 - around two and a half million people - missed a payment on everyday household bills in order to fund Christmas spending. These debts alone are stressful enough, but coupled with credit card debt it’s easy to see how an individual can feel overwhelmed by expenses they can’t afford to pay back. This situation can quickly become very serious and

if you’re in this situation you should get advice from the Advice Plymouth Partnership straight away. Sorting out debts can be complicated and creditors can sometimes be difficult to deal with but an adviser will be able to help you work out what’s the best thing to do. Call 03444 111 444 to begin finding a way forward. Planning, budgeting and organisation are really important to avoid getting into debt at Christmas and beyond. Debts can easily become a way of life if you’re not careful so be prepared! Here are Advice Plymouth’s top ten tips for managing spending: 1. Plan early – create a budget 2. Don’t forget the everyday bills – this is how debt occurs; thinking you have money to spend and nothing to spend on utilities 3. Keep things simple – pay outright by cash, cheque or debit card. Don’t take out extended credit agreements unless they really do work out cheaper 4. Don’t rely on an overdraft – talk to your bank first 5. Buy safe –don’t buy from unauthorised traders or borrow from unauthorised lenders 6. Shop around – find the best price 7. Do your own credit checks – compare credit card terms. Budget for all costs and put payment dates in your diary! 8. Read the small print – hidden extras may appear in any credit agreement 9. Be organised – if you’ve borrowed money it won’t be long before payment is due and pay on time! 10. Start planning and saving for next Christmas.

Well what a (leap) year 2016 was! Plenty to be concerned about – the ongoing crisis in Syria; the threat of ISIS; what exactly does ‘Brexit’ mean (apart from ‘Brexit’ of course – thanks for that Mrs May!); what will Donald Trump’s election mean, and the ongoing financial pressures and austerity measures. Yet some slightly more encouraging things too - the Queen turned 90; the Rio Olympics brought much of the world together; Andy Murray’s success, Pokemon made people get up and ‘go’ – and no doubt many more examples that never make the news about organisations and individuals who work for, care for and otherwise help and serve their friends, families, neighbours and the wider community.

So much for the ‘wider world’ and things ‘out there’ – what about our own Plymouth based lives - and the reality of those resolutions we may have made loom large…….no more chocolate, lose weight, join a gym, make a bigger effort to get on with relatives etc. Any resolution we make requires discipline to maintain – at the end of the day it is up to us if we keep to these resolutions – we decide – it is not the government’s fault or our spouses’ fault or our friend’s fault or even God’s fault if we don’t follow through and do what we say we will. Here’s a suggestion for 2017 – let’s reduce as much of our debt as we can and even clear it completely if possible. “The borrower is the servant of the lender”, says a well respected book and this is true at individual and

international levels.

Talking internationally, there still exists the potential for Euro-zone meltdown or a big bank collapse. We don’t really know the effect this will have. All we do know is that putting our ultimate security in such institutions is ill advised. Who can we blame if there is an international financial collapse? Well, at the end of the day a country is made up of the individuals in it and the combination of individual decisions results in the country’s overall position. When G K Chesterton and a number of other prominent authors were asked by The Times newspaper at the turn of the 20th century to write an essay headed ‘what’s wrong with the world’, he wrote a simple insightful response thus: Dear Sirs I am Sincerely yours, G K Chesterton He was right – except he could have added ‘and so is everyone else’ - it is human beings who are responsible for the problems of the world, directly or indirectly, with our selfish attitudes, borrowing and consumption patterns – but all is not lost - let’s resolve in 2017 to do what we can at our local level to spend, save and (especially) relate better. Dealing with debts may require a long-term plan and may not yield instant results but it is definitely worth the effort for the freedom that can ultimately result. If you do have personal or business debt problems you might appreciate seeing someone locally rather than phoning one of the internet based remote organisations that will only deal with you by phone. In my firm we deal mainly with business

related debt but apart from ourselves, here are the contact details of some organisations offering local sources of help: Christians Against Poverty (Plymouth) 0800 328 0006 (freephone) CAP Money website: www.capmoney.org.uk Plymouth Focus 01752 669785 www.plymouthfocus.co.uk Citizens advice (Plymouth) 0844 8269717 Tony Jopson, FCA Insolvency Consultant, 246 Peverell Park Road, Plymouth, PL3 4QG Telephone: 01752 775068 tony@tonyjopson.co.uk

THE CHRIS COLE

Every January we at Cross Rhythms endeavour to start this column off with a focus on the person of Jesus Christ as the foundation of the Christian faith. Both divine and human, Jesus is the Cornerstone and Foundation of Christianity. According to ancient scripture, the Bible; historic tradition; history itself and the belief of orthodox biblical Christianity through the ages, He is the very focus of global Christianity. The Christian faith is in fact the world’s largest NGO. ‘Madman, liar or Son of God..’ those are the options of opinion open to us when we consider the claims Jesus makes about himself, said CS Lewis (probably one of the greatest Christian thinkers and writers of the 20th century). For Christians, Jesus is the one and only Son of God, he has existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit for all eternity, and He came to earth as a man 2,000 years ago in the mysterious act we call the incarnation – quite literally, Heaven invaded Earth. But who is Jesus to you and me? A couple of hundred years ago, Napoleon Bonaparte had this to say, acknowledging that Jesus was greater than any of the mighty political or military leaders throughout history: “I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of

For me, He’s already shown us the answer. He did become like one of us, in Jesus. He became like us to the point of taking all our worst problems and character traits called sin onto himself through the cross. Why? So, we would not have to bear it forever and can therefore enjoy a relationship now with a perfect loving Father, and so we can go home to heaven too. All that and more, recorded in ancient scripture, shows us what God is like and how outrageously he loves us. Yet Jesus is far more than the One who became one of us and lived a humble, vulnerable life, a life submitted to his Father in Heaven, that ended in death on a cross and the apparent defeat of everything he valued in the face of religious persecution. He is so much more than that. He is God Himself and has existed for all time and beyond time. He created us and the world we live in. He beat death in a fight based in hell itself, and He rose from that horrendous place to establish a constantly growing group of men, women and children on the earth who would carry on where he left off, in the power and love of His Holy Spirit. He returned home to a throne beside his Father’s in heaven and his Father has put him fully in charge of everything that He created. He has promised he will one day return to finally bring his peace and the rule of righteous Love in the world. Prophetic scripture confirms this. Like I said, much more than just a man like one of us... yet he became that too, in an act of supreme humility and courage, because of his outrageous love for you, and me. Now that’s who I think Jesus is, and I believe it’s who the Bible says he is... what about you? From all of us at Cross Rhythms. Have a powerful and influential 2017, especially in these challenging times.

Search on for construction apprentice of the year

Star student paints his way to top national title

Leader of Plymouth City Council Ian Bowyer, along with key partners from the Building Plymouth network have officially launched the search to find Plymouth’s construction apprentice of the year 2017.

City College painting and decorating apprentice, Philip Orme, 23, from Barne Barton, has beaten the best in the country to take the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year title.

The award acknowledges and celebrates an apprentice’s exceptional contribution to their workplace, and recognise their commitment to the apprenticeship experience. The annual award is known as The Ron Simmonds Construction Apprentice of the Year trophy. Ron Simmonds was a former Alderman and Mayor of the City and trained as an apprentice bricklayer, the trophy pays tribute to the contribution he made to Plymouth. The award in his memory seeks to acknowledge and celebrate an apprentice’s exceptional contribution to their workplace, and recognise their commitment to the apprenticeship experience.

Philip claimed his place in the national final after winning one of the regional heats that took place across the UK earlier this year. The final of the prestigious competition took place at the annual National Painting and Decorating Show, held at Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Philip was up against seven other students in the race for the national title. Each finalist had to paint a wall panel, door and framework, and apply stencils, all while abiding by technical specifications. “Philip is a real asset to the College,” said painting and decorating lecturer at City College, Syd Dart. “His hard-working attitude and love for what he does are inspirational and we consider him to be a great ambassador for our trade. Previously earning second place at last year’s regional heat, Philip is fully deserving of the national title this time round. “This competition offers young people a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage and help further their careers. The standard shown by the competitors is proof that the industry is in safe hands and we couldn’t be prouder of Philip, who has proven himself in front of many professional painters.” Philip said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been named Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year. Taking part in these competitions is really exciting and helps

me to develop my skills. Being up against other painters who all excel in the field, in front of some of the best in the business, makes you want to push yourself. I’d encourage all young painters and decorators to take part in the competition.” Philip won a £500 voucher for the college and a selection of painting and decorating supplies worth up to £2,000. For those interested in learning a new trade, and for details on all courses, apprenticeships and study options, including those starting in January, the college is holding a Course Information Drop-in on January 4 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, at Kings Road. Please visit cityplym.ac.uk events or call 01752 305300 for more information.

He said: “Since winning Plymouth’s Construction Apprentice of the Year, I have felt both a renewed interest and enthusiasm for my chosen craft, with a personal ambition to pursue a future career in site management. “Alongside working with my company, I have had the pleasure of assisting Building Plymouth at events to promote the virtues and importance of apprenticeships.
“Through engaging with these events I have discovered a flair for public speaking and noticed a distinct boost to my confidence, something before pursuing my apprenticeship I had severe problems with. “Deciding to undertake an apprenticeship was something I had not previously considered but after an indefinite period of misfortune and with the prompting of my mother, I decided to bite the bullet and have never looked back.”
