Thousands comment on plans for 30,000 new homes Calls to protect football pitches at Collings Park in Compton and objections about development plans on Paradise Road in Stoke are some of the responses received as part of a massive consultation. Thousands of comments from residents have been submitted as part of the Joint Local Plan consultation carried out by Plymouth City Council and South Hams District and West Devon District Councils. A total of 30,300 homes need to be built in the next 16 years across the area and the councils are looking at where they should be built along with employment

Prizes galore at City Centre events Ever fancied getting onboard a TryKayak or being a zoo keeper for the day? Well, now is your chance as these are the prizes up for grabs at the next Family Fun in Frankfort Gate event.

Part of the Ocean City Festival, head to the West End on Saturday September 17 between 11am and 3pm and enjoy a day of nautical fun. Enjoy family friendly ‘Fish and Ships’ arts and crafts activities with the team from the City Museum and Art Gallery. Make and decorate origami boats and bunting with sea creatures on. The Mount Batten Watersports Centre will be running a dry-land kayaking competition. Race against the clock and

see if you can paddle the fastest time 100 metres using a kayaking ergo machine. The fastest time of the day will win a two hour TryKayak taste session for four people. Dartmoor Zoo, home of ‘We Bought a Zoo’ will be joining the celebrations giving out free children tickets for the zoo, running a competition to win a Junior Keeper Experience, worth £199 and bringing a bunch of creepy crawlies for you to see and handle. Be entertained as the Plymouth Morris Men will perform two nautical themed dances. These take place at 11.30am and 1pm.

Deliveroo launches Plymouth service Deliveroo, the on-demand delivery service for highquality restaurant meals, has been launched in Plymouth. More than 50 jobs will be created for local people in Plymouth over the course of the first year, with the majority of these being Deliveroo riders, who aim to deliver food, which will be cooked, fresh to order and delivered from the restaurant kitchen to the customers’ door within 32 minutes. More than 35 restaurants have signed up to the service, meaning people in Plymouth can now get their favourite food from their most loved local restaurants including PizzaExpress, Barbican Steakhouse, Yo!Sushi and Arribas Mexican. Jeremy Rawlinson, general manager at Deliveroo, said: “We’re extremely excited to be launching in Plymouth and we’re looking forward to bringing some of the town’s delicious dishes straight from the

hands of local chefs to customers’ doors. “Plymouth is a multicultural and prosperous area with a diverse range of chain and independent restaurants, and we have seen a real appetite for the service. “We already have a number of great partners across the city and we are excited to expand and widen the variety of restaurants on offer to our customers in Plymouth over the course of the next year.” Deliveroo is focused on providing the ultimate food delivery experience. Customers have the option to schedule orders via the Deliveroo app up to one day in advance or receive food as soon as possible between 12 noon and 11pm, from a variety of leading local, independent and high-quality chain restaurants, conveniently delivered to their homes and offices in an average of 32 minutes. Proposed changes to controversial traffic calming on Central Park Ave Plymouth City Council has announced plans to replace the new priority give way feature (traffic island) on Central Park Avenue with three speed humps. The new humps will be similar to those already installed on Central Park Avenue and will ensure vehicles slow down as they approach the new crossing point at the Dale Road junction. No parking spaces will be lost as a result of the changes. If approved, the work will be carried out before the end of the year.

Over the last 10 years, Plymouth has seen 8,575 homes delivered and 92 per cent were built on previously-built land. Building is underway on a further 644 properties and 4,741 have permission to be built, but work is yet to start. In South Hams and West Devon the consultation focuses on six major towns of Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Okehampton, Tavistock, Totnes, and smaller rural centres of Bere Alston, Lifton, Hatherleigh, Modbury,North Tawton, Salcombe, Stokenham / Chillington and Yealmpton. This consultation follows on from previous work carried out separately by the three councils on the Plymouth Plan, South Ham’s ‘Our Plan’ and West Devon’s ‘Our Plan’. The outcome will be a single strategy for the area

– the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan. No decisions have been made yet about any of the sites. The final allocations will be included in the draft Plymouth and South West Joint Local Plan due for consultation in Autumn 2016. Dear Plymouth Shopper I have recently moved from Peverell to a new address in Hooe. I have been very busy cleaning the house and as a result have not been wearing my wedding and engagement ring. I clipped them together with a bulldog clip and put them in my glasses case ‘for safe keeping’. Unfortunately this has not proved as safe an option as I thought! I last saw them when attending a Specsavers appointment, on August 4, in the Broadway Shopping Centre. I was going to put them back on but stupidly didn’t! I have not been able to find them since. I have contacted the various shops I visited after my eye test but nothing has been found yet. I’m ever hopeful that if anyone came across them they would do the right thing and hand them in. I would appreciate it if you could print an appeal in the next publication of the Plymouth Shopper just in case someone has them but doesn’t know how to reunite them with their owner. This has been an emotionally upsetting experience as I have been married for 39 years and it will be our Ruby Anniversary next year. To think I will never see my rings again is a devastating thought. Central Park is going to the dogs! A Music, Food and Fun day at Central Park will host a whole range of dog activities on September 18 as LEAP supports Greyhound Rescue West of England and Two Bridges Flyball and Agility Club “Along with the usual range of activities for children and stalls for adults, there are likely to be plenty of very good looking, or very agile pets in the Park if it is anything like last year” said Annette Laurie, director of LEAP Events who organises the monthly free family fun day at Central Park.

It’s celebrations all round at the Moors Edge U3A Members of Moor’s Edge U3A will celebrate the second birthday of the group on September 8 - and visitors are welcome to attend. Reindeers wanted! The search is on to find eight reindeers for a new comedy show in Plymouth. Watch Ashore news Members of the Plymouth Branch of Watch Ashore attended an afternoon tea at the home of Mrs Helen Croft to celebrate the 90th birthday of a founder member Mrs Gwen Hayward. New for this year is the route around Buckland Abbey, letting St Luke’s super-cyclists go where we have never gone before and slog their way around our toughest courses. Couple take the plunge with new venture focused on family fun A Plymouth couple have launched a new business in the city aimed at helping families to have fun on the water. Murray and Nicky Barton opened the Mudjimba Beach Trading Company in Faraday Mill in July, stocking an extensive range of kayaks, paddle boards, body boards, wetsuits and other kayak accessories. The couple hit the headlines in 2007 when their 18-month-old son Archie contracted Meningitis B. The severe septicaemia which followed has ravaged Archie’s body and caused him to have both legs amputated. In addition he has lost a number of fingers, part of an ear and the tip of his nose. His sight is also severely impaired. Nicky and Murray spent several years raising funds for Archie’s treatment and also highlighting the dangers of Meningitis B. Time out and family fun has always been important for them and for years they toured the coastline of Cornwall in a camper van, giving Archie the opportunity to enjoy himself in the water. Nicky said: “We thrive for Archie to have a life with no limits and we have had some amazing moments, one of which was Archie surfing backwards on Polzeath beach.” Archie, who is now 10, has also surfed on the Great Barrier Reef and Bondi Beach in Australia - where the family have relatives. “My sister lives near Mudjimba Beach in Queensland,” said Nicky, “which is where we got the inspiration for the company name.” The family-run business takes pride in supporting British - and mainly South West suppliers. The company is official retailer for Somersetbased FatYak in Devon and Cornwall, stocking the popular Mahee double, Kaafu and Surf. Nicky and Murray only took the decision to launch the business in May and quickly fitted out the unit at 52-53 Faraday Mill in Plymouth.

Murray, who served in the Royal Navy for eight years and has run his own construction company for nearly 30 years, said: “Some people may think we have been a little reckless in launching the business in such rapid time, but we certainly don’t have any regrets. “We not only sell and customise new kayaks and paddle boards, but we also repair and refurbish worn or damaged items. We also trade used boy’s toys, so if someone has a kayak, body board or similar which is no longer used, or where they need to trade it in for a newer model or a larger size we are happy to help.

Going batty at Ford Park Cemetery September is a busy month for volunteers at Ford Park Cemetery. The current exhibition ‘The People of Plymouth 1916’ continues until September 18, and is open for public viewing Tuesday and Thursday 10.30am - 3.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The Visitor Centre cafe will be open for refreshments during these times. The first event for September is the popular evening ‘Bat and Moth Walk’, at Ford Park on Friday September 2 at 7.30pm, for a fun and informative evening, to learn about the moths and bats to be found in the cemetery grounds. There will be a bat walk led by members of the Devon Bat group and as the evening draws in, an opportunity to observe moths as they arrive at light traps set out around the grounds. This event is free of charge. Please bring a torch. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening. A ‘World War 2 Singalong’ takes place on September 28 at 7.30pm. Lord Mayor Pauline Murphy and her Consort Cllr Brian Vincent are attending this event. During the evening the audience will be entertained by local artists Michael Campari and the ladies of Lipstick and Lashes who will perform familiar songs from the era.There will be plenty of opportunities for audience participation throughout the evening. All aboard for the Yard! Visitors to the Royal William Yard can now take a bus right into the heart of the historic waterfront site. Citybus service 34A goes through the main gate all day, every day so whether you are heading out for a meal, enjoying evening drinks with friends, going to an event or just sightseeing it will take you right to your destination. The 34A is supported by Urban Splash and Plymouth City Council and links the city centre with Millbay and the Royal William Yard every 30 minutes, seven days a week. Year 12 and 13 students came to the College on Thursday morning to open their brown envelopes on what the principal Carol Hannaford called ‘one of

the most important days of the school year.’

“Today is all about fantastic results which mean our students can go on to university, apprenticeships or training,” said Mrs Hannaford. “It represents the culmination of all their hard work and the invaluable support of all their families and our wonderful staff.” Students will soon be taking up places at universities across the country including Exeter, Nottingham, Falmouth, Gloucester, Southampton and Plymouth. Steve is bowled over as friends’ fundraising campaign is keeping his world championships dream alive Friends have rallied around after blind lawn bowls player Steve Cook had given up hope of competing in next year’s Visually Impaired World Bowls Championships in South Africa when he was selected to represent England but was told he’d have to pay all his costs – and that of his guide. Devonport-born Steve, who now lives in Saltash, has been national champion three times in the past six years. He has just beaten the current world champion on his home turf in Israel and is one of the favourites to win his category at the World Championships in Cape Town in March. But it seemed as though his chance of taking part had been dashed because of the lack of funding for the sport: “I found out I was selected for the England team in the middle of July,” said Steve, who’s a member of the Saltash Lawn Bowls Club. “The only problem is that it will cost getting on for £4,000 to pay for me and my guide to go to Cape Town. I went to my bank and asked for a loan and when they said ‘no’ I thought ‘that’s it then, I can’t go’.”

When he told friends, however, they immediately launched a fundraising campaign: “After the meeting with the bank I went to the Chancel Wine Bar & Bistro in Plymouth, where I’ve got to know the owners very well. I was very despondent but they said ‘no, let’s sort this out, let’s make sure you get to Cape Town’.” The Chancel owners, Jamie and Paula MacLeod-Johnstone, have set up a Crowdfunding page for Steve and they’re hosting a fundraising quiz night on August 30 to help kick-start the campaign. Paula said: “It’s ridiculous in this day and age that someone with world class ability is hindered for fiscal reasons. “With the support of local people we’re hopeful of reaching the £4,000 target before the December deadline, which is when Steve needs to be able to confirm his participation.” Steve lost all of his sight at the age of five when he had a brain tumour which led to the removal of his optic nerve. He competes in the B1 Completely Unsighted category and, if the money is raised in time, he will be playing in the singles and mixed doubles. Steve started playing bowls in 2007 but didn’t compete seriously until his first

“When you watch Steve, it’s incredible,” added Roger, who knows all about fundraising in his capacity on the Board of Trustees of the Royal British Legion. “He’s better than most sighted players and he deserves this chance to compete at the highest level.”

He was very down when he came into the Chancel after his meeting.

This year Steve has also taken up bowling of a different kind after joining Somerset Cricket Club’s Visually Impaired team as a medium-pace bowler: “It’s great fun, totally different to able bodied cricket, obviously. The players have varying degrees of visual impairment and I’m guided by the wicketkeeper. I’m really enjoying it.”

Plymouth musicians and dancers play big part in French festival Musicians and dancers from Plymouth played a big part at a festival in Brest, Plymouth’s beautiful twin city.

The home base on site was an ‘English Village’ showcasing, in particular, the South West of England. Other villages featured Russia, Portugal, Netherlands, Polynesia and the Melanese Islands.

The Brest International Maritime Festival 2016 is held every four years and this year the city of Plymouth was honoured with an invitation to send dancing and musical representatives to perform and be part of a very busy programme across the whole Festival site for three days.

In total, 59 members from Plymouth Morris Men, Wreckers Border Morris, Plymouth Maids and the City of Plymouth Pipe Band travelled from Plymouth to Roscoff, supported by Brittany Ferries, one of the main sponsors of the Festival. The success of the group’s visit to

France was in no small measure due to the Plymouth Brest Twinning Panel, Plymouth City Council and special thanks to Reza Salami, Brest Deputy Mayor (International Relations) and friends within the Brest Jumelage. In temperatures up to 34 degrees (and rising!) the group worked and played hard and enjoyed every single minute of the experience. Flash Jack, a shanty crew from the Plymouth area, also took part as well as a

lively band from Falmouth. In addition to the dancers and musicians, some 40 yachts left Plymouth in good time to arrive for the beginning of the Festival, and from there onwards to continue on to Douarnenez and beyond to join in other Breton festivals. The yachts were moored at Sutton Marina and a welcome reception was held at the Royal Western Yacht Club.

Skills development students win Young Enterprise Award Young skills development students from City College have been awarded the Daily Express Plymouth Young Enterprise Award for their artwork, ceramics and enterprising activities. The three teams - Arty Smarty’s, Buzzy Bunch and Change of Art - were presented with their prizes at the annual awards ceremony held at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. As part of the ceremony, students from each group delivered a presentation on their project to an audience of dignitaries, including councillors, members of the Young Enterprise Board, representatives from Plymouth University and the students’ own friends and families.

Sue Evans, Skills Development lecturer at the college, said: “I am so proud of the students for what they have achieved, and so are their parents and carers. “To present in front of an audience like that can be quite daunting, but they really excelled themselves and the audience gave them a very warm reception. “This award not only brings prestige to the college but was a great boost of confidence for our students.” The college’s skills development courses offer young people with moderate to severe learning difficulties and disabilities the chance to learn within a supported environment, where they are taught independent living and preparations for adult life.

It marked the end of a long journey for the parishioners but with a very fruitful ending! A brave decision was taken by the parochial church council between late 2014 and early 2015 to begin a re-ordering process to bring the church up to standard and create a warm and welcoming space for worship and community use. The boiler was very inefficient and the wooden floors uneven and hazardous. The church was closed from mid January to late July to enable the refurbishment work to take place. The main contractor, Ryearch, has overseen the excavation of the floor, installation of underfloor heating and beautifully laid limestone slabs interspersed with the original commemorative ledger stones.

During the excavations, the contractors have dealt effectively with the discovery of a minimal quantity of asbestos, and very sensitively with the discovery of many human remains and crypts. The Diocesan archaeologist has been involved and all of the remains re-interred with reverence and respect.

The City College Community Café resumes in September on Thursday mornings. Fund raising continues on a regular basis, with a Murder Mystery evening in September, a ‘Scratch Concert of Rutter pieces’ in November and the annual Christmas Fair in early December.

Education Training Kenneth Baker may not be a household name, but he has the distinction of being one of the very few British government ministers to have something named after him. As Education Secretary from 1986 to 1989, he introduced Baker Days, loved by all students, as days when teachers go to school but pupils do not. Presumably the idea behind these inset days was for teachers to delve deeper into their professional development, and improve the mechanics of school communities without the distractions of children. Joking aside; the transformation of young people, with the immense potential they carry, into well adjusted, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually mature adults is one of the most difficult tasks on earth, fraught with danger and complexity, yet full of wonder as we witness the results. Fortunately for adults, children come with much of the innate ability for this transformation stored within them; from the serious business of play, to endless questions, they have much to teach us, as we endeavour to teach them what they will need for the lives ahead of them. In these days of immense cultural change through the rapid development of the digital world and the web of global connections now possible, it is important to remember that learning can happen in a myriad of different ways, that all have their place in the modern world. It is a huge bonus to be able to click on an online course or You tube video to follow an interest or figure out a problem. Sometimes

the practicalities of life mean that education needs to work around the primary needs of the individual, and often duties of care mean we have to fit our education around other factors. However human beings need other human beings to be with, and the skills of respectful listening, communicating our ideas, and team work are all taught in communities where we learn to interact. Lord Baker, as he is now, remains committed to the fact that education is a key component to a country’s success and is a driver behind the movement for University Technical Colleges. At a sprightly 81 years old, he is the author of a new report on the Digital Revolution and an 8 point plan for the future of education. Whilst many of his conclusions are yet to be debated, it is comforting to know that this most difficult task of education remains at the centre of thinking of those with the ability to effect change. News coverage is often quick to point out when these communities get things wrong, but we would like to celebrate the endeavours of everyone committed to enhancing education in the city. From one of Plymouth’s biggest employers and source of international attention, Plymouth University, right through to the expertise and graduate qualifications of those involved in nursery education, Plymothians can be proud of the emphasis our city puts on the education of its citizens.

King’s School, Mannamead, aces School Inspection Service report Staff and students alike are celebrating at King’s School & Nursery, on Hartley Road, Mannamead, after the school passed its School Inspection Service (SIS) report with – quite literally – outstanding results across the board. Hundreds of Plymouth students reflect on their A-Level results As hundreds of students across Plymouth collected their A Level and other Post-16 results in August it’s unclear what the results mean for Plymouth. With the ongoing complex changes to qualifications, and the way in which they are classified by the Department for Education, It is ever harder to compare results with previous years given. Early indications are that city results have improved again this year with a high number of young people progressing successfully to their chosen destination. Nationally Higher Education uptake has increased by three per cent this year, so even more of young people will be going on to university. It’s also been good news for vocational, technical and applied results, which enable students to progress to further work based training and employment. These vocational results in particular have shown fewer young people are not in education, employment or training. Advice Plymouth is a partnership organisation made up of four charities; Age UK Plymouth, Routeways, Plymouth Guild and Citizens Advice Plymouth. Each has different qualities and expertise that benefit the people of Plymouth and offers the best support and advice available.

We can help people with a wide range of issues such as: benefits, debt, utilities (water and fuel), employment, health and care, consumer, travel, family, legal and tax. Advice Plymouth’s services are free, impartial and confidential and are available to anyone who lives, works or studies in Plymouth. When an issue such as the ones mentioned above are affecting an individual’s life they can quickly feel isolated from help and therefore become very vulnerable. RAF Association in appeal for new members to sign up The Plymouth branch of the RAF Association is keen to recruit new members and is appealing to past and present service personnel to sign up. They are asking local people who have friends or relatives who served in the RAF to encourage them to contact the Association. Existing and new members are welcome to attend branch committee meetings, which are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month, with remaining dates in 2016 being September 28, October 26, November 23 and December 14. The meetings are held at Raffles Club, Ermington Terrace in Mutley, starting at 6.30pm. The Branch AGM will held on Wednesday March 1 2017 at the same 16

For further information contact the Branch secretary on 07588 830230, especially new members. • Over the weekend of August 13 and 14, the Plymouth Branch of the RAF Association were invited by the RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group to the 75th anniversary of the opening of Harrowbeer Airfield at Yelverton. The event was well attended with displays to please all age groups and RAFA thanked all those who supported the Wings Appeal. The Remembrance Service for the 62 young airmen lost during the four years of operations at Harrowbeer, held on August 13, was brought to a close when young Air Cadets and military representatives laid 62 wooden crosses, commemorating the names of the lost airmen.

By the time you are reading this we should be coming out of our summer holidays and preparing for the autumn ahead. The Brexit result seems to have been instrumental in causing the pound to fall on the foreign exchange market, which suddenly makes holidays in the UK a lot more price competitive.

However, it is said that ‘one man’s meat is another’s poison’ and those travelling abroad for holidays this summer may have suffered a drop in their purchasing power when exchanging sterling. So have we seen an influx of tourists into the South West this summer? – the figures remain to be published; certainly a significant proportion of our local industry is tourist and leisure based. I speak to a number of local business owners and I am still hearing that parts of the leisure sector in this area are still struggling financially, notably pubs, many of which are on the market for sale. This got me thinking again about our currency – it has been mooted to me that in history the decline of an empire can be closely correlated with a decline in the physical quality of its currency. What seemed a bizarre notion at first actually seems to bear some truth on further research. A study of the Roman empire in this context, for instance, reveals that what most see as the start of its decline can be traced to the Emperor Nero’s ‘debasing’ of the currency in the middle of the first century AD. This involved reducing the weight of the gold and silver content of coins. The actual silver content of Roman coinage dropped

from 90% in around 50 AD to 0% by 260 AD. So what of the British empire? – it was significant in the 18th and 19th centuries especially, but it began declining in the late 19th century. The country had to borrow heavily to finance wars and the Gold (sterling) standard that was a world benchmark of currency strength came under pressure.

Consider even more recent years; those of you at least as old as me will remember some of the pre-decimal (pre 1971) currency. Think about some of these coins - the old 3d piece – what a substantial bit of currency that was – not worth very much but get a batch of them together and your pocket would be heavily weighed down – its nearest modern equivalent is our 1p coin! Think also of the old two shilling piece (the florin) – compare this with the current equivalent 10p piece – it too was much heavier and substantial. In what ways we might conclude that the British Empire and more specifically now, our nation, has “declined” I leave you to consider. And what of our most common bank notes? Much smaller than earlier year versions, reflecting the fall in absolute value – my grandma (if she were she still alive) would I am sure be amazed that a cup of coffee could possibly cost over £3 ! And apart from the Queen, who now appears on our notes? Well currently on the £5 note it’s banker’s daughter and prison reformer Elizabeth Fry (to become Sir Winston Churchill when re-printed); the £10 note has evolution theorist Charles Darwin (to become Jane Austen when re-printed) and the £20 note currently has the economist Adam Smith of ‘the Wealth of Nations’ and ‘Laissez

faire’ trade theory fame (to become the artist J M W Turner when re-printed). Hopefully some interesting thoughts! Book Review: Plymouth in the 70s This is a wonderful picture book that can take you back to days when some of Plymouth was still being rebuilt, Green Shield Stamps were all the rage, and some of us were too young to know any different, writes Ian Pilkington. It has just enough explanation about what was really going on to counter-balance your own (often faulty!) memory, from Plymouth’s leading local historian, Chris Robinson. I read Plymouth in the 70s in the same way I think most people will: I flipped through the 250 plus pages, full of black and white and colour images. I paused where the photographs grabbed my attention, to read the always interesting, and sometimes fascinating text; I let my mind wander down the highways and byways of memory, got thoroughly distracted from the day at hand, even went on the web to research some more. Then I would put it down, forget about it for a week or so, pick it up again, and repeat the whole thing. Chris’s knowledgeable book explores ordinary life in an extraordinarily evocative way. I found myself drawn in, page after page either waking slumbering memories or showing me things I had not seen for myself, even though I was there at the time. For instance – Drake’s Island used to be open to the public, with a ferry service, a café and guided tours. As a young man I was privileged to live and work over there (late 80s) but I had no idea. And who knew that the sailing ship moored beside the Three Crowns was named the ‘Kathleen & May’? Not me and my best mate Tim – in 1975, at the age of 11 and 9 respectively, we were so convinced it was the Golden Hind that we paid our tuppence to go on board and played our games accordingly. (Perhaps this shows our stunning lack of historical sense. It was great fun, though.) While we’re on the Barbican, Chris’s explanation of how we only have most of the place because of the work of the Barbican Association was an eye-opener for me. Did you know that the Local Authority pulled down more Jacobean and Tudor buildings before and after WWII than

were bombed in the blitz? Sometimes it needs the passion of local people to prevent the destruction of our heritage in the name of illconceived ‘progress’. A book like this helps us to value what we have. My younger children are puzzled as to what we did back then, when they discover how few TV channels we had (remember Westward TV, Gus Honeybun, Judy Spiers and Ian Strirling? Chris does); the fact that Summer holidays meant days on the Hoe with a packed lunch at the ‘Men’s Pool’ or ‘Ladies’ Pool’ (Tinside only if you had a few pence to spare); and that some of our friends did not have a car, and the ones our parents did have … well, look at the pictures! The images that pack this book give them a great insight into life only 40 – 50 years ago, but which seems to be another age. Although full of historical content, it is not chronologically ordered, instead the chapters are themed (Devonport, The Hoe, Schooldays, Social Life, Sport, Working Life etc etc). I read from back to front and it was at the end of this journey that I found Chris Robinson’s words, written in his intro: “Flicking through the pages … I can wind back the clock and smile … revisiting old haunts, finding familiar faces, recalling conversations long forgotten … and wallow in the warmth of the memories.” Fair enough - if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me. People talk about being passionate about Plymouth. This book, the latest in Chris Robinson’s comprehensive series chronicling 20th century life in our city, displays a sincere love matched by a deep knowledge of his subject. History matters, and chroniclers like Chris Robinson provide us with valuable resources that not only help us remember, but inform our decisions for the future. We neglect our history at our peril – fortunately, Chris Robinson isn’t going to let us. Buy the book and you’ll have a treasure house of images to match your memories. Plessey team fund raiser

Plymouth semiconductor manufacturer Plessey will be holding their annual charity fundraising cycle tour of Devon on September 8, having raised over £8,400 for Prostate Cancer UK over the last three years. The Plessey tour comprises a 105 mile ride which will be based on a modified route of stage six of this year’s Tour of Britain, participants cycling across scenic Devon and Dartmoor with scheduled stops along the way.

After a year’s absence, Devon is back in the route in stage six of the Tour of Britain which will include a challenging six-kilometre climb of Haytor, above Bovey Tracey in the Dartmoor National Park. The official Tour of Britain will be riding stage six the following day on Friday September 9.

Prostate cancer currently affects 250,000 men in the UK and kills one man every hour. Whilst it is already the most common cancer in men, it is predicted to become the most common of all cancers in the UK by 2030. The funds raised by Plessey will help to provide vital support and information to men and their families, fund research into the causes and treatments of the disease, and campaign to give men’s health the prominence it needs to influence others. Team Plessey will be riding the modified route, which starts and

Cycling is in top gear!

British Cycling and Sky are celebrating another successful year of delivering cycling in partnership with Plymouth City Council. The three organisations teamed up in 2012 and since then the Sky Ride recreational cycling programme has had 21,000 sign-ups, with more than 100 people going on to train as lead riders themselves. In recognition of the achievements made over the last four years, British Cycling has presented the Council with an infographic as a lasting record. Sky Ride Local is continuing this summer and there are led rides to suit cyclists of all abilities, from easygoing trips to more challenging adventures. The women’s Breeze programme is also running again. You’ll be guided by friendly British Cycling ride leaders along routes perfect for you – whether you’re looking to get fit, spend time with the family, discover new routes or enjoy the outdoors. Councillor Steve Ricketts, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery, said: “It’s great to be working with British Cycling again this year and I’d really encourage more people in Plymouth to take part in the programme. Triumph for Plymouth transplant team Team Plymouth scooped a total of 25 medals at this year’s Westfield Health British Transplant Games – a great effort and five more gold medals than last year. The 15 gold, six silver and four bronze medals were won by the seven competitors who represented Team Plymouth. All aged between 35 and 70, they have received a life-saving kidney transplant at Derriford Hospital. This year’s games were held in Liverpool and were the largest for several years, with more than 900 competitors taking part. Events included swimming, ten-pin bowling, crown green bowls, tennis, archery, badminton, walking, track & field athletic events, basketball and cycling. Claire West, Plymouth Hospitals research nurse specialist and deputy team manager, said: “The large amount of competitors

highlights the benefit of organ donation. This is a truly emotional, inspiring event. When the donor families walk into the Opening Ceremony, they always receive a standing ovation for their selfless decision of deciding to donate their loved ones organs.” Janet Jenkins, Team Manager, won two gold medals and two bronze medals in athletic field events. She said: “The 2016 Games were my 14th after having my transplant in 2002. “I’m so proud of the team this year and everyone came home to the South West with a medal, plus Steve Jarvis for winning the Victrix Ludorum Trophy for the best male athlete in his age group. Also, five members of the team, which include some of the team supporters, entered the Donor Run which is an open event to the public. This is an opportunity

The lost statue of Barne Barton Secondary... Can you help solve the mystery of the lost statue of Barne Barton Secondary? The existence of this striking family-group sculpture was recently uncovered by local researcher Hilary Kolinsky while investigating the history of what is known today as Red Brick Field in Barne Barton. Part of the former playing fields for Barne Barton Secondary School, the field now provides a community green space for residents of houses built on the old school site. Hilary’s research will help to provide design inspiration for new landscape features that will soon be commissioned to enliven the former school field – including perhaps, the return of the long-lost statue! Sketches of the lost sculpture, which used to stand at the main entrance to the school, were recently discovered in a trawl through an old school prospectus

held by Plymouth & West Devon Records Office.

Presumed to have been sold or destroyed when the school was demolished in the early 1990s, nothing is known about the fate of this impressive piece of art that will surely be remembered by many a former Barne Barton pupil. THE CHRIS COLE

Experience By Dave Simpson Chris Cole is taking a few months well-deserved rest from writing his column for the Shopper, so for the next couple of editions, Ian Pilkington and I will be putting pen to paper - don’t worry, Chris will be back! In the modern world we are bombarded with pressures to earn more, buy more, be better looking and generally get more stuff. So much so that ‘contentment’ can seem like a taboo word. My brother recently came back from a trip to Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, where he helped in an orphanage. When he came back I, like the rest of our family, was eager to hear of his experiences. As you can imagine he had many stories to tell from what was a pretty life changing experience. What stuck with me the most though was his description of the children he spent time with. He told of their playful characters, their big smiles and their love of fun. In many ways his description of them was not extraordinary, you could have used it for most children right around the world. What was quite outstanding however was that they remained as happy and joyful as they were despite, not because of, their circumstances. You see these

My brother told me that none of them owned any of their own clothes. They simply wore clothes which the older children had grown out of. Please do not get me wrong, like any of you reading this and like my brother and the team he went to Malawi with, upon hearing of their situation I have a desire to provide for those children. To buy them clothing and toys and gadgets and things we in the UK enjoy and take for granted. In many ways this would be no bad thing.

In fact they were given books, games and other things by the team and they were of course extremely grateful.

job. It really isn’t based on circumstances; how much money you have, what kind of car you drive, what clothes you wear or any ‘thing’ you can buy. It is based much more on knowing you are loved. That is one thing these children did have, in abundance. They knew they were loved by those people who worked in the orphanage, by their friends, by those teams who visited and they had a faith perspective which meant they knew they were loved by God. I don’t really have a problem with buying new things or a healthy desire to better oneself.

What is most interesting to me though is that in the midst of their circumstances they were happy. Genuinely.

What I do think is an issue though is when we get into a mind-set which links our happiness and contentment with what things we have. It just isn’t true.

My brother did not come back with a dishonest account. He did not find in Malawi a depressed people. If anything he is more likely to find more depressed people here in the UK!

Inspirational student awarded Award-winning apprentice twice at college celebration clinches another gold prize A young man who is battling cancer has been celebrated at City College’s annual Student of the Year Awards.

A star apprentice from Plymouth has achieved first place at the southern heat of Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition. Philip Orme, 23, from Barne Barton, a City College painting and decorating apprentice is no stranger to winning awards for his skill and craftsmanship.

Taryn Cliff, aged 20, from Hartley, won both the Media and Digital Student of the Year and the special Equality and Diversity Awards, for his continued strength and commitment to his studies despite his ill health.

During his Apprenticeship, Philip has been awarded first place in both the regional SkillBuild and last year’s Dulux Student Decorator of the Year competition. He was also recognised at City College Plymouth’s annual Student of the Year celebration in 2015 and can now add this most recent industry award to his increasingly impressive collection.

Mark Trewin, director of Creative, Cultural and Digital Industries, presented Taryn with the Student of the Year Award. He said: “Taryn is a young man whose strength and attitude towards life is truly awe inspiring. His commitment to his studies throughout his illness is testament to his love of learning and it is a genuine delight to recognise his hard work with the Student of the Year Award.” Despite spending much of his time in and out of hospital, Taryn never lets his illness hold him back. In one instance he had surgery on a Friday and was back to college on the Tuesday, adamant that he didn’t want to fall behind. The Equality and Diversity Award was sponsored by Livewell South

Syd Dart, painting and decorating lecturer said: “Philip is one of our star students. He has worked extremely hard this year preparing for competitions, which has been in addition to the work that he normally undertakes at college.

West and presented by Pathways to Employment Manager, Nita Dodd, who said: “The Equality and Diversity Award celebrates the achievements of those from a variety of backgrounds. “Despite having a serious health condition, Taryn has shown a real strength of character by continually achieving high standards in his studies. His infinite resilience is truly incredible and his positivity

is genuinely inspiring - a very deserving winner of this award.” Taryn said: “It hasn’t been easy, but I love my media course and the people I get to hang out with at college. I want to be a sports journalist one day, so I’m trying to get as much as I can out of the whole experience. “I was really surprised to get the extra award - it’s been a really lovely evening!”

“Philip has enjoyed huge success and we are all very proud of the standard of work that he has produced to win these competitions. We wish him every success when he competes in the two national finals, which are to be held later this year.” Philip said: “I was really pleased to get this award. It means a lot for my work to be recognised.” All those who took part in the heats of the competition at Bournemouth and Poole College are working towards an NVQ Level 2 in Painting and Decorating or Construction. Philip will compete in the national final in November of this year, held at Ricoh Arena in Coventry, where he will be in with a chance of winning £600 in prize money and a selection of painting and decorating supplies worth up to £2,000.
