FIRST WORD

Welcome to our packed summer edition of Profile, which shines the spotlight on Plymouth and its thriving marine and sustainability sectors.

For years, Britain’s Ocean City has been guilty of not talking itself up and being reluctant to shout about its best qualities.

In our dedicated section, we look at why there’s actually huge cause for optimism for Devon businesses and focus on some of the firms that call Britain’s Ocean City home.

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us at The New Continental in Plymouth for our Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Awards ceremony in May.

It’s a phrase that’s used a lot but it really was an unforgettable night of celebration as we honoured the county’s leading businesses and entrepreneurs.

The unsuspecting winners were revealed on the evening by hosts Nadine Mashingaidze from the University of Exeter and Fresh Air Studios’ Paul Philpott, who kept everyone entertained throughout. See all the winners and finalists in this edition of Profile.

Our glittering event also recognised the winners of this year’s 30 Under 30 campaign, in partnership with Babcock International Group. Meet them all on pages 26 and 27. The next generation of business leaders is something we desperately want to encourage and discuss - how we create those leaders and equip them with the skills they need. Our 30 Under 30 programme - with the associated networking and mentoring - is one of the ways we’re trying to do this.

Our attention now turns to the Devon Business Show, which returns to Plymouth Pavilions on Wednesday 11 October,

CHAMBER PATRONS

connecting hundreds of businesses and entrepreneurs with future clients all under one roof.

The Show is one of the highlights of the region’s business calendar and is the perfect platform for businesses across Devon and Plymouth to showcase their products and services.

I’m thrilled to announce that City College Plymouth, YGS Landscapes Ltd and Wildanet are our respective ‘People and Skills’, ‘Planet’ and ‘Purpose’ headline partners, reflecting the Devon & Plymouth Chamber’s three strategic priorities.

You can book your place by choosing your stand on our interactive map and completing the form on the Chamber website.

Finally, I’d like to say a huge well done to Plymouth Argyle on their promotion to the Championship. It’s a huge achievement that will have a positive ripple effect on our regional economy and gives Devon a real sense of momentum.

BARNSTAPLE PANNIER MARKET EXPECTED TO REOPEN THIS SUMMER

The Barnstaple Pannier Market is expected to reopen this summer, following extensive regeneration works as part of the town’s Market Quarter project.

The market, which has been a cornerstone of the local community for generations, has been closed for several months as part of North Devon Council’s £11 million investment, which includes four regeneration projects in the town centre.

The aim of the works is to create a modern, vibrant market that appeals to both locals and visitors alike, while still maintaining the historic character and charm of the original market. The improvements made will enable the market to be used in a more flexible way, facilitating a more varied and ambitious programme of markets, cultural events and community gatherings.

EXETER AIRPORT EXPANDS FLIGHTS WITH TUI FOR SUMMER 2024

Exeter Airport has announced a significant expansion of flights for summer 2024 with the UK’s leading travel brand TUI.

15,000 additional seats are being planned by the operator, compared to this year, with more flights to Crete and Rhodes in Greece, offering new 10 and 11 night holidays for travellers.

These new offerings will bring Exeter Airport’s weekly flight count with TUI to 20, covering five regions, making TUI the largest operator at the Airport.

There will also be an increase in the frequency of flights to Dalaman (three-times weekly), Heraklion (two-times weekly) and Rhodes (two-times weekly). TUI already flies twice weekly to Antalya in Turkey.

It means there will be four Greek islands offered from Exeter with TUI, including twice-weekly Corfu, Heraklion, Rhodes, and Zakynthos.

TUI will also provide four weekly flights from Exeter to support their Marella Cruises programme to Corfu, Dalaman, and Palma de Mallorca.

Commenting on the expansion, Stephen Wilshire, managing director of Exeter Airport, said: “We’re thrilled to be announcing this significant increase in flights for summer 2024 and offering more holidays for travellers from Exeter Airport. TUI is the biggest operator at Exeter, offering over 8% capacity than this year and 11% more than Summer 2022.

“This is a major milestone for us, and we are excited to offer more flights and destinations to our passengers. It provides greater choice and flexibility, and the additional seats and flights are testament to the growth of Exeter

Airport and the demand for more travel options.”

With the additional flights and expanded holiday options, Exeter Airport continues to be a vital gateway to and from the South West. This expansion will provide more stress-free and affordable breaks for travellers, allowing them to discover new destinations and create unforgettable experiences.

CHOOSE REFURBISHED DEVICES AS A MORE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS OPTION

A recent case study identified that a 20-employee business could save in excess of £8,000 on their mobile phones alone by switching to refurbished.

The iOutlet is a multi-award-winning retailer and distributor specialising in the refurbished technology market.

The team offers a wide variety of products across several different categories. Products are distributed across 40 countries with over one million units sold to date. They also offer a buyback and trade-in solution, promoting their goal of developing the circular economy, reducing e-waste and carbon footprint.

Refurbished tech has been tested and repaired if needed and will come with a warranty to give you added peace of mind. For example, if you choose to get your refurbished tech from The iOutlet your device will be graded, which identifies the quality of the device so you know exactly what to expect and you’ll be given a one-year warranty.

There are other reasons more people are choosing to purchase refurbished tech. When you opt for a refurbished device, you’ll have more flexibility on how much you want to

spend, opting for a lower grade will save you more money but you’ll still get all the functionality of a new device. Even opting for a pristine quality device will save you money in comparison to buying brand new.

More and more people are choosing to shop for refurbished devices as it’s a more sustainable option. It stops tech that is still in good working condition from going to landfill and over time reduces the demand for new tech being produced. The average iPhone may save as much as 200 grams of eco waste and The iOutlet is part of the “One Tree Planted” scheme.

The benefits of choosing refurbished tech alongside the increasing cost of buying brand new devices has led to the increasing popularity of refurbished tech. If you want to get in on the benefits of refurbished devices, The iOutlet has a wide variety of iPhones available from the iPhone 8 to iPhone 14 Pro Max.

More and more businesses are recognising the advantages of buying refurbished tech and, once more, it’s right on your doorstep here in Plymouth. The team is happy to give free B2B quotes and examples of how much your business could save!

Few cities have had it good lately. The economic battering that only Brexit and a global pandemic can dish out, coupled with a cost of living crisis that’s very much also a cost of doing business crisis, means few have been able to grow.

And in a city like Plymouth, the outlook in the city’s business community might have been bleak. It’s traditionally a low-wage economy reliant on the sprawling Devonport Naval Base, built on an indomitable community spirit that’s also sadly become known for talking itself down. Faced with such global headwinds, it should be downcast.

And yet there is optimism in the fresh sea air.

Plymouth has bet on marine in recent years, the creation of the UK’s first National Marine Park is one of the indicators of

PLYMOUTH’S OCEAN BLUE VISION

Serious investment in infrastructure, a growing marine sector of genuine global reputation and even the football team has been promoted - Plymouth is having something of a moment. Profile examines how Britain’s Ocean City is realising its potential.

the city-wide commitment to marine and sustainability. It signals a city looking outward from its urban centre to its best natural asset - Plymouth Sound - and embracing it.

“For years Plymouth has been guilty of not talking itself up and being reluctant to shout about its best qualities,” said Stuart Elford, CEO of Devon & Plymouth Chamber.

“But there’s a belief in Britain’s Ocean City that projects like the National Marine Park mark a change in attitude. We’ve created something no one else has got - and arguably nowhere else in the UK could.

“That kind of statement of intent gives a city pride in itself. It gives the wider business community confidence that investment is incoming and that the city has a purpose, a mission. That can only be a good thing.”

The Marine Park’s creation involves

bringing together the water’s many users - the Armed Forces, the commercial port, innovating new tech companies and the myriad of leisure uses - and finding a strategy that has a better future for Plymouth at heart.

The work of the Marine Park is farreaching. it can’t be defined by one single issue, campaign or project. It’s about the conservation of the Sound (with remarkable work by the Ocean Conservation Trust particularly in how we look after our fields of seagrass) hand in hand with developing innovation in marine technology.

And that marine technology is genuinely world-leading. The biggest sign of just how high Plymouth’s stock has risen globally in recent years is the launch of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, named after the 400th anniversary of the ship’s original sailing from Plymouth to America. (cont P.8)

7 Summer 2023 Chamber Profile CHAMBER FOCUS: PLYMOUTH MARINE & SUSTAINABILITY

This world-first - an unmanned vessel capable of long-distance navigation - has literally created waves around the world having successfully crossed the Atlantic landing in Plymouth, Massachusetts, last summer. It’s a collaboration between Promare, MSubs and IBM - all organisations choosing Plymouth to develop groundbreaking new marine technology.

Complementing the Marine Park has been the steady rise of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport. It’s been several years since Plymouth City Council, in partnership with Devon County Council, was successful in its bid for Freeport status for an area that spans both the water, and land around Plymouth Sound and the South Hams.

Freeports offer significant benefits to businesses located within their boundaries. That includes not only customs measures but a range of tax reliefs, enhanced support for trade promotion and innovation. There’s also seed capital to help pay for infrastructure and other enabling activities and complete local retention of business rates revenue from new and expanded developments located in the Freeports.

Plymouth and South Devon describes itself as a dynamic public/private partnership with Plymouth City Council, South Hams District Council and Devon County Council working alongside Princess Yachts, Carlton Power, the Sherford Consortium, and a wider range of stakeholders including the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter, Plymouth port operators, skills providers and the Heart of the South West LEP.

The ambition is to “supercharge the South West economy by building on the region’s unique national capabilities in marine, defence and space to form globally impactful clusters and a UK Innovation

Superpower”. It plans to build upon the region’s marine heritage, with a strong business, manufacturing and research community in Plymouth and the Oceansgate innovation centre; a world-class hub for marine industries.

up to 25 miles offshore, available to test and develop technologies for advanced marine autonomy, clean propulsion and digital ocean innovation.

It involves the work of the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the Marine Biological Association.

Rob Watson, Director of the Marine Business Technology Centre based at Oceansgate, said: “Smart Sound Plymouth has its roots in the world-class marine research activities undertaken by Devon’s world-class academic and research organisations. All of this activity has created a huge amount of national and international interest, and Smart Sound underpins the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport marine innovation offer.”

It pledges to “supercharge the South West economy” by:

• Attracting new investment and providing supply chain opportunities, embedding a commitment to tackle climate change. Deliver clean growth and marine decarbonisation

• Providing innovation, investment and infrastructure to build a more resilient, sustainable, and productive economy

• Upskilling the local workforce for the high-quality future-proof jobs the Freeport will bring

One example of work already driving innovation is Smart Sound - a fully managed and instrumented testing zone stretching

Summer 2023 represents a pivotal moment for the Freeport - it’s now assembled a leadership and delivery team to make these pledges a reality, buoyed by already attracting the Freeport’s first tenant Supacat, with a multi-million-pound contract between Devonport-based Babcock and the defence vehicle manufacturer.

Crucial to the vision is attracting the right kind of tenants, like Supacat, to build the kind of high-growth cluster of specialist firms that can power the development of the sector in Plymouth.

The significance of the contract win, and the stature of the tenant, has not been lost on the team inside the Freeport.

“This milestone investment marks the transition from a mobilisation phase to a delivery phase and is a tangible example of the impetus we are creating around the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport and our desire to make opportunity become reality,” said Jan Ward, the Freeport’s Chair.

CHAMBER FOCUS: PLYMOUTH MARINE & SUSTAINABILITY

“It demonstrates the partnering and strengthening of the supply chain to win contracts and leverage the Freeport incentives. As one of the first Freeports to get full approval just two months ago, it is great to see such private sector investment in our Freeport so early in the development programme. Indeed, we are confident that more will follow. This is a real boost to South Yard; creating a good number of manufacturing jobs for the people of Devonport and the surrounding area.

“Freeport status is a great accomplishment for the city and the wider South West region as it de-risks private sector investment while the overall economy is uncertain. It initiates, fosters and delivers new investment, jobs and growth – making announcements like today’s possible. We look forward to working with the MoD, Babcock and Supacat.”

The feeling of confidence doesn’t stop at

have been complimented by the likes of Sail GP. The cruise ship sector continues to grow with the arrival of ever-more impressive ships in Plymouth’s stunning natural harbour.

Lest we forget, it’s a little more than 10 years since the creation of the ‘Britain’s Ocean City’ brand and a destination plan with an ambitious vision to match. It’s amazing how quickly the projects along the way - such as the building of Barcode, the restoration of Royal William Yard and the revitalisation of parts of Commercial Wharf in the Barbicanhave become part of an improving city life.

Other brave cultural firsts include the breathtaking spectacle of The Hatchling taking flight, while long-established events such as the British Fireworks Championships

“SUPERCHARGE THE SOUTH WEST ECONOMY BY BUILDING ON THE REGION’S UNIQUE NATIONAL CAPABILITIES IN MARINE, DEFENCE AND SPACE TO FORM GLOBALLY IMPACTFUL CLUSTERS AND A UK INNOVATION SUPERPOWER”

PLYMOUTH AND SOUTH DEVON FREEPORT AND ITS KEY ROLE IN THE REGION

The Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) freeport is an exciting opportunity to build a better, sustainable future for the south west. It drives business innovation, working with the world’s leading innovators and universities in the key and emerging sectors of marine, defence and space. Attracting new investment, enabling supply chain opportunities and embedding the industry’s shared commitments to tackle climate change, deliver clean growth and marine decarbonisation.

From bid stage to bringing businesses on board

In March 2021 the PASD Freeport was successful in its bid to be included in the government’s highly ambitious flagship UK Freeports programme - it is just one of eight Freeports in England (there will eventually be twelve in total across the UK) and the only one within the South West.

The main focus of the Freeport is to attract new and expanding business to the area with specialisms and advanced manufacturing primarily in the marine, defence and space sectors with low carbon applications. Working with the Department of Business and Trade (DBT), a dedicated team of experts are working with the team to showcase the Freeport to global investors and businesses who fit the criteria to expand or relocate to the region.

Businesses that are part of the Freeport can take advantage of a range of tax and customs benefits and incentives to support growth, innovation and investment in the South West at one (or more) of the three Freeport sites at South Yard, Langage and Sherford, a total of 88.3 hectares.

Ambitious, innovative and transformative

The Freeport is already being recognised by government for being an exemplar of innovation within the UK Freeports programme and will work with key investors in both green, and blue, technology who are able to support and develop global standards in the Freeport, including, alongside the newly announced Maritime Regulatory Innovation Framework (MRIF) - a

Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) sponsored national testing sandbox for forming new regulations for Marine Autonomy and Clean Propulsion systems in Plymouth waters.

State-of-the-art innovation assets and facilities close to the PASD Freeport including Smart Sound Plymouth, Coast Laboratory, National Centre for Coastal Autonomy, Centre for Future Clean Mobility and others make the South West a global centre of excellence for the developing, testing, and manufacturing of the latest marine and defence technology. The clusters that have formed here are ready for more international partners to amplify and accelerate their impact worldwide.

Skills and a sustainable future

Skills and workforce development is a key priority for the Freeport and its partners; it is expected that the Freeport will enable over 3,500 new jobs, with the majority as high-value roles. For the Freeport to unlock employment opportunities in high-value jobs and deliver economic growth the focus on skills will be within STEM, skilled trades, engineering, production, manufacturing, logistics and supply chain and business administration.

The Plymouth and South Devon Freeport has a high-level ambition to act as an exemplar in delivering a net zero emissions target by acting as a catalyst, helping to accelerate the implementation of existing technologies (such as electric vehicles and hydrogen) as well as pioneering new solutions through the Freeport’s innovation hotbed.

Carlton Power, a primary PASD Freeport

partner, has been shortlisted for the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund; if successful the green hydrogen hub at Langage will add to the great innovation enabling facilities to support the green/blue economy and help to deliver net zero goals for Freeport operations.

Be part of it

Richard May, CEO of Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, says: “The Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) Freeport catalyses deeper and specialist innovation in the South West’s key and emerging sectors of marine, defence and space. This drives sustainable economic growth, creates new jobs, welcomes new national and international investors, supports existing business expansion and accelerates net zero ambitions for the region.

“The Freeport and its partners were recognised by government early on in the UK Freeports programme for leading innovation in key sub-sector specialisms in Marine Autonomy, Connected Ocean and Clean Propulsion solutions.

“Plymouth and South Devon Freeport represents an exciting opportunity for regeneration, growth and development in the region, and will be a driver to long-term prosperity and success for the South West.”

For more than 30 years, Westcotts has been supporting family-run businesses working in all sectors of industry across the Westcountry. It’s the mainstay of everything the firm stands for – helping to support and guide businesses as well as individuals, offering a team of 34 partners and 250 team members at the heart of their local communities.

However large or small, Westcotts’ unrivalled knowledge combined with their depth and breadth of experience and expertise across the firm means we can provide a complete holistic approach.

Whether it is general accounting and tax planning, financial planning, succession, raising finance, auditing and tax compliance, business recovery or digital, clients can be confident Westcotts has a service to meet their every need.

“Here in Plymouth, for example, we have a team of people who are on-hand to collaborate with their clients,” says Adam Croney, Westcotts’ partner. “We value our relationships. We share their ambitions to help them grow and progress while providing a whole raft of help and support, as well as looking after all their business and personal needs.”

“What we feel makes us unique is that we really get under the skin of their businesses and understand their priorities and plans for the future. Working together with our clients and putting their requirements at the front and centre of everything we do means that we can help them to reach their goals,” Adam adds.

Westcotts’ client base is incredibly diverse – the firm has sector specific specialist teams from agriculture, charities, education, and hospitality to manufacturing and renewables. The firm’s client base reflects the diversity of the South West’s business community, and the team understands that specialist businesses need specialist support.

The firm also recognises that there has been an exponential growth in the marine sector in Plymouth in recent years. According to Plymouth City Council, it is estimated to generate around £400 million a year for the local economy with the sector directly employing around 7,500 people in the city.

“Combined with this is the support for Plymouth and South Devon’s Freeport status,” says Adam. The government announced its full business case approval for the city to become a

Alison has worked with directors and business owners advising on all manner of matters including start-ups, expansion plans and exit strategies.

Alison says, “Our style is to take a real hands-on approach, taking the time to properly understand the needs and concerns of clients, giving advice and support every step of the way, while proactively managing each project.”

Westcotts’ clients operate in local, national, and international markets. “We really understand the issues that business owners face and we offer a full suite of advice that’s relevant and bespoke to each client. It’s that personal partner-led service that I think people value most of all,” Alison adds.

With a network of offices across Devon and Somerset, Westcotts rivals some of its larger competitors.

Freeport in December last year.

“The marine sector is going from strength to strength in the region and Plymouth is well placed to be part of that significant contribution that marine plays in the local and regional economy.”

The team at Westcotts have been working with clients in the sector for several years and Adam says they’re proud of the firm’s association with businesses operating in this arena, “We have experience of working with clients in the marine industry including SM Group (Europe), Bluestone Technology and Atlantic Workboats and we’re really excited about the opportunities that the Freeport status will provide. We hope it will help to generate thousands of new jobs.”

Westcotts has experience of working with clients at all stages of their journey and has a dedicated corporate finance team led by Alison Watts to further assist businesses with their growth plans.

Shona Godefroy, managing partner says, “We have evolved over the years. We are a forward-thinking firm, investing in our teams and embracing innovation and new technology while never losing our personal approach.”

Over the last three decades a lot has changed for Westcotts, but one thing remains the same says Shona, “The way we stay committed to the South West’s communities and thousands of clients, who rely on us as business advisers.”

CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: THE DRIVE FOR CHANGE IN THE GLOBAL MARITIME INDUSTRY BY

As the world continues to tackle climate change, the global maritime industry is increasingly focused on adopting sustainable practices in its operations. With shipping accounting for 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the industry is beginning to realise that it has a vital role to play in efforts to reduce carbon emissions and protect our planet.

Shipping companies around the world are implementing key measures to reduce their carbon footprint. For example, many are investing in more efficient engines, using alternative fuels such as biofuels and LNG, and even exploring the use of wind power.

To bring about real change, the sector must also focus on developing a strong and skilled workforce that is aware of these environmental issues and equipped to tackle them head on.

As the Rector of a college that

provides Higher Education to the maritime industry, particularly Sustainable Maritime Operations, based in a city with strong naval and maritime heritage, we have an opportunity, and duty some might say, to be at the forefront.

MLA College are the education partners of CIFAL City of London; part of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Through this partnership we aspire to build capacity in the maritime sector to create a sustainable future whilst working towards the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

Through our innovative offering and delivery, we believe we are one of the most sustainable Higher Education Institutions globally. We hope we can work with you to make your workplace a better environment for the global good.

7 ESSENTIAL FEATURES EVERY BUSINESS WEBSITE NEEDS TO SUCCEED

When it comes to business websites, certain key elements can really help you achieve a solid online presence. Let's take a look at seven must-have components.

1. Be concise and clear

One crucial aspect of your business website is conveying a clear and persuasive value proposition to potential customers. This means effectively communicating your products or services' unique benefits and value, making it clear why they should choose you over competitors.

2. Intuitive navigation

Create a navigation menu that is simple and easy to use, allowing users to find what they need without confusion. Make sure the information is organised logically for quick and effortless navigation.

3. Contact information

Make sure your website prominently displays your contact information, such as your phone number, email address, and physical address (if applicable). This will make it easier for visitors to get in touch with you.

4. Always responsive

To ensure your website is easy for all visitors, it's important to have a responsive design that works well on mobile devices. This means your website will look great and work properly no matter what screen size or device someone is using to access it.

5. Clear Call-To-Actions

It's important to incorporate clear and prominent calls-to-action (CTAs) throughout to encourage users to take desired actions on your website. These can include prompts to make a purchase, subscribe to a newsletter, or contact you for more information.

6. Sing your praises

It is advisable to display customer testimonials, reviews, or case studies to instil trust and credibility. Favourable feedback from satisfied customers can boost the confidence of prospective clients while selecting your business.

7. Lastly… The human factor

Remember that your clients are human, so communicate with them accordingly. Don't let the digital nature of your platform distract you from this fact, and engage with your audience in a human-like manner. Take the time to research your potential clients, meet them where they are, strive to speak their language, and let this tone of voice permeate your content and value proposition.

While these points serve as a basis for creating an efficient website for a business or service, it's important to keep in mind that each business has its own distinct culture, target audience, goals, and approach to quality and communication. PLYMOUTH’S HIDDEN GEM…BUT HOPEFULLY NOT FOR MUCH LONGER!

Hearts Together first opened the doors of its Hospital Hotel in 2001 and since then we have provided accommodation and support for over 100,000 patients, carers, and relatives, travelling from across the peninsula and further afield. Our guests stay when they or a loved one are receiving medical care, often in the most difficult of circumstances. Over time, we have seen the need for our services increase to the point where demand now outstrips our capacity. In the first quarter of this year alone there were 1287 nights stay we were unable to accommodate; 319 families that we could not help in their time of need.

We are committed to doing all we can to address these unmet needs and in the pursuance of this aim, we have embarked on an ambitious expansion project. Our project began in 2018 and we successfully secured planning permission in

2021. Since then, the world has shifted and we now find ourselves faced with the challenge of a build cost which has almost doubled since 2019, alongside a perfect storm of soaring interest rates and a cost-of-living crisis. This will not stop us though; we will continue to find new and innovative ways to meet these challenges alongside others who share our vision. The future holds huge potential with collaborations and corporate partnerships, proving the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts and that with a shared ethos and values, together anything is possible. Are you one of those people?

We are privileged to be able to say that the work we do at Hearts Together makes a positive difference to people’s lives and we welcome you to see first-hand the difference we make and to be a part of something great.

The Devon Work Hubs network launched in 2012, initially with two work hubs. Today it has 24 coworking spaces across the county and it’s continuing to grow. Ilfracombe, Bideford and Kingsbridge are the latest additions to the network, providing coworking venues in even more locations.

The network offers access to a variety of meeting rooms, hot desks and office spaces for freelancers and small businesses.

Their doors are open for support and they can offer the sense of community that may be lacking from simply working from home.

“Work Hubs are invaluable to people looking to build out their business network,” says Stacey Sheppard, founder of The Tribe, a coworking space for female entrepreneurs in Totnes.

“Connections occur organically because coworking spaces bring together people from all different industries and all different stages of their careers. Just working in a coworking space means that you surround yourself with business connections that you wouldn’t meet if you were working from home.”

As well as providing networking opportunities, Work Hubs also help reduce travel costs and carbon emissions.

Tavistock Enterprise Hub was one of two hot desk locations used by south west based engineering and environmental service provider REDS Group when it was founded in 2017.

Despite the expanding business now

having five offices nationwide, Shane Stanley, Associate Director for Major Projects at REDS Group, still uses the hub.

“I visit all of our offices all over the country but my key office is working from the Tavistock Enterprise Hub,” explains Shane. “It’s just a few miles from home and it’s quite central to all of the south west locations I tend to deal with.

“My work life balance is massively increased by working from the hub. I have more time with my family and more time to focus on work without the added stress of driving to get to work.”

The added social value provided by Work Hubs extends beyond being home to countless successful businesses in Devon. The Devon Business & Education Centre near Payhembury is just one example.

Owner Chris Lorimer says: “We’re so pleased this space has created opportunities for businesses and individuals to flourish. We’ve also been able to set up a charity, called Devon Business & Education Trust, which supports people across East and Mid-Devon who are socially isolated.”

WHAT DOES THE UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH DO TO SUPPORT BUSINESS?

Q. So, Rich, what is Enterprise Solutions?

A. Enterprise Solutions at the University of Plymouth links businesses with academics by helping them access state-of-the-art facilities and expertise within the University. We receive around 600 enquiries yearly from the local and wider community who want to collaborate on research and development initiatives.

Q. … and what are businesses looking for when enquiring?

A. Every business has different needs, but there are several things they can look for when enquiring about Enterprise Solutions. Businesses often seek facilities to carry out and accelerate their research and development ideas by working with our students and academics, including product testing, feasibility studies and quality control work.

Businesses of all sizes and within all sectors approach Enterprise Solutions to access the university’s high-tech facilities, which the Enterprise Solutions team can support with. There are modest fees to use the facilities, although some facilities are subsidised.

Q. Any other reasons why businesses enquire?

A. Sure, the University has a wealth of knowledge and talent from world-class academic researchers and brilliant students. Many of our academics work with industry partners to develop research that mutually benefits both parties, and Enterprise Solutions has seen ground-breaking research through industry and academic collaborations. Enterprise Solutions prides itself on its ability to help forge these partnerships. They support the economic growth of our business and the

wider community and the research quality within the University.

Q. Can you detail the benefits of working with Enterprise Solutions?

A. One key benefit of working with Enterprise Solutions is that they bridge the gap between knowledge and support for innovation. Nationally within the UK, there is a growing focus on increasing productivity. The government has been encouraging collaborations between businesses and universities so that they can conduct productive and efficient research using top-tier facilities and leading academic insights based in universities.

Working with universities can also help businesses access funding for research. For example, businesses can apply for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership that allows UK-registered businesses to collaborate with an academic institution for research and apply for funding. ‘The KTP partnership brings new skills and the latest academic thinking into the business partner to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project.’ (gov.uk).

The University of Plymouth’s R&D Solutions fund can also provide grants for early-stage research between academics and university partners. www.essupport.com/case-studies/ rampd-solutions-fund-2023

Q. Do you think universities really understand businesses?

A. There are differences between the world of industry and academia but at the University of Plymouth, we pride ourselves on developing world-class research that addresses real-world business problems. Businesses are seeking a partner that is genuinely value-free, objective

and independent, and universities provide this unique approach to joint working. Businesses are also seeking a safe harbour where they can put their thinking and research to the test. The University of Plymouth provides the perfect space to aid the development of its ideas, providing validation for potential business investors.

Enterprise Solutions are the bridge builders between academics and businesses here at the University of Plymouth, which has a wide and impressive range of academics, facilities and equipment. Enterprise Solutions prides itself on high-quality communication and results for academics and businesses. They locate themselves closely with the increasing British need for innovation and provide an excellent service for businesses looking to expand via research and development.

If you would like to contact Enterprise Solutions with an enquiry, please email enterprisesolutions@plymouth.ac.uk, call 0800 052 5600, or visit www.essupport.com.

32 Summer 2023 Chamber Profile SECTOR FOCUS: BUSINESS SUPPORT
Hello reader, my name is Hannah Obern, and I’m a second-year student studying English with Publishing at the University of Plymouth. Whilst undertaking a micro-internship with Enterprise Solutions, I sat down with Rich Adams, Business Engagement Manager, to find out how the university supports the business community.

ARE FINDING OUT HOW HIGHER EDUCATION CAN BOOST BUSINESS

Faced with the issues that affect so many companies across the South West - the skills gap, attracting and retaining the right people, disrupted supply chains, soaring costsemployers are looking for pragmatic and affordable solutions.

City College Plymouth prides itself on providing a wide range of bespoke higher education courses and technical training that allow businesses to develop their staff.

Over many years, we have forged a bond with companies across the city and the wider region that is based on what they specifically require. Put simply, employers trust us to make sure that the training we provide for our students meets their needs and aligns to business objectives.

These relationships are important because they give the employer the chance to discover how higher education can make a difference for them. But there are still many businesses who don’t realise how our courses can help them retain and attract quality staff, gain a competitive edge and drive growth, so we’re continuing to spread the word.

As the city’s anchor institution for skills training in key areas such as engineering, maritime and construction, our courses combine subject specific knowledge with an emphasis on employability. We are able to do that for a number of reasons. Compared to a large university City College Plymouth is a smaller, more personalised institution, so

the education we offer is person-centred and hands-on, delivered by industry-experienced lecturers with first-hand experience of the sectors they teach.

We work with employers to identify the skills they need to reduce the gap between education and employment. And as an employer ourselves with an innate understanding of what’s required, we involve local companies in the design of our courses to ensure our students enter the world of employment ‘work ready.’

We keep our course sizes smaller on purpose, so that when employers are looking to upskill and develop existing staff, we can be flexible and nimble in our response, being sure to deliver precisely what your business requires. We will fit around you - our offering is bespoke, with standards written around job roles, so you can bring on your staff to meet the growth needs of the business, and make it possible for your staff to work and study at the same time.

And we have some fantastic facilities. Our Centre of Higher Technical Innovation and Maritime Skills (TIMS) is a high-tech teaching facility supporting the maritime, engineering, manufacturing, construction and digital technology industries. By giving students access to the very latest industry equipment, we provide employers with staff equipped with the highly technical, specialist skills needed now, and ready for innovations on the horizon, which is crucial to fuel business growth. Lance Chatfield, Executive of Technical Innovation said TIMS will “play a key role in helping the region address skills shortages, whilst acting as an enabler for the development of emerging new technologies”. Because our level 4 offer is more focused, there is the added benefit that, on average,

our higher education tuition fees are around £3,000 less than at larger universities. Meaning we offer a more cost-effective route to bringing the right skills into your organisation. CHARITIES SHOULD PREPARE FOR ANNUAL RETURN

The Charity Commission registers and regulates all charities and not-for-profit organisations in England and Wales, helping us to feel we can support them with confidence, and they can fundraise legitimately and effectively.

As part of this, charities must send an Annual Return to the Commission or report their income and spending every year. This varies depending on their income.

Charities earning under £10,000 a year only need to report income and spending. Charities earning between £10,000 and £25,000 must answer questions about the charity by providing an Annual Return.

Charities earning over £25,000 must complete the Annual Return, have their accounts checked and provide: the trustees’ annual report, accounts, and an independent examiner’s report. All CIOs must submit an Annual Return and accounts regardless of income.

Last December, changes were proposed for the 2023 Annual Returns process - all charities with financial years ending on or after 1 January 2023 must take note.

Annual Return 2023

Following a consultation, the Commission’s 2023 Annual Return update saw a reduction in the maximum number of questions charities can be asked. It’s now 49 - three less than proposed.

Secondly, the introduction of income thresholds for five of the new questions help reduce the burden on small charities.

Nineteen questions were reworded to improve clarity and reduce resources and time spent by charities. The Commission’s glossary and guidance has also been improved.

What new information is needed?

The latest Annual Return requires extra information from most charities. Firstly, they will need to confirm or update their public address.

Afterwards, charities will need to supply confirmation of their policies and procedures at the end of their financial period, as well as declaring how many people were permanently employed by the charity, how many were on fixed-term contracts and any self-employed people who were working for the charity.

Charities will also need to confirm the value of any grants paid to individuals, other charities and non-charitable organisations and whether any recipients were related parties.

Other than trustees, the charity will also need to declare whether they have members who are entitled to vote under the charity’s governing document.

Smaller charities

Charities with an income of £500,000 or less during their financial year will need to provide the total value of their income from donations and legacies, charitable activities, other trading activities and investments. For most charities this follows the treatment of their income within their accounts.

For charities with an income more than £100,000, they need to provide the value of the charity’s single highest value donation, either a corporate donor, individual or a related party. As a result of the consultation this requirement was removed for smaller charities to reduce the administrative burden.

A helpful guide

A new guide was released in January to help support charities giving details about what they’re going to be asking, why and how they’re going to use the data.

In 2024, another six questions will be removed from the Annual Return reducing the burden further.

Overall, the Commission’s goal is to charities’ data more effectively, and better identify risks and trends within the sector to help the public make more informed choices.

Charities will be able to file their Annual Return online later this year using a new digital service currently being rolled out by the Commission, along with a guide and glossary. The Commission wants trustees to ensure their details are up to date to enable them to access their new personal Charity Commission account when launched.

ABBEY’S NEW LOOK CONFERENCE CENTRE IS BOOMING

Today, Buckfast Abbey is a flourishing complex of buildings which the monks have continually developed to aid them in realising their vision for Buckfast - to be a national centre of witness to God, and the Roman Catholic faith.

The monks place great value upon hospitality, and welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The site includes beautiful gardens, a restaurant, shop, exhibition, pizzeria, a broad range of guest accommodation and a conference and events facility.

Conveniently located midway between Exeter and Plymouth, just off the A38, the Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre has recently undergone a makeover, including the construction of a new mezzanine floor and terrace area in the Schiller Hall, which makes the most of stunning views over the River Dart, the Abbey Church, sweeping grounds and its beautiful gardens. Capable of catering for up to 200 delegates, the new Schiller Hall at the Conference Centre, has been extended to the East, providing new kitchen and catering facilities, as well as extended cloakrooms and

service accommodation, making it a perfect venue for dinners, awards or special events.

The new space has proved exceedingly popular and is a favourite to many event organisers.

The expanded central atrium area has a newly raised roof to flood in natural light, which compliments the further meeting rooms or breakout space on the first floor.

Six other event rooms, which can host

groups of up to 85, are also available in the main building, each of which has been enhanced with the very latest in audiovisual equipment, to aid training, presentations or business events. The majority of the rooms overlook beautifully maintained gardens that

surround the Abbey.

The Conference Centre is renowned for the quality of its food and its chefs prepare and cook all food daily, even including the biscuits at break times! Parking is free and all rooms come with a range of equipment, all you’ll need for a seamless presentation.

On-site accommodation for residential conferences and events, is available at the 33 bedroom on-site Northgate House Hotel, or group accommodation at Grangehurst House.

NEW PODCAST GOES ‘BEYOND BRUNEL’ TO UNLOCK SOUTH WEST VISION

A new podcast series, Beyond Brunel, explores the role of infrastructure in the South West’s transition to net zero carbon by 2050, while improving people’s lives, helping the region to become more productive and protecting nature and the environment.

It’s commissioned and devised by the South West Infrastructure Partnership (SWIP) with funding from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West, and produced by Chamber member Fresh Air Studios.

Famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel helped shape the South West, creating some of the region’s most iconic and enduring infrastructure. But what does the South West need in future to meet the unprecedented challenges posed by the nature and climate emergencies?

A key challenge explored in the first episode ‘Innovation and Productivity’ is the problem of disjointed transport infrastructure in the region. Guests talk about how increasing connections between road, rail, and active forms of travel, such as cycling and walking, could improve people’s journeys.

“Brunel shaped the region through grand infrastructure projects, but we can’t just build

our way to a net zero future,” says local civil engineer Christopher Ackland, who studied engineering at the University of Plymouth and now works for engineering consultancy, WSP.

“As an engineer, I’m inspired by the opportunities that Brunel’s ingenuity created for the South West, however, our guests focus on a new kind of infrastructure revolution, which will help our region respond to the climate crisis, changes in demographic and social behaviours. The conversations will appeal to anyone keen to understand infrastructure challenges and how those working in the industry are thinking about the future.”

Paul Philpott, CEO of Fresh Air Studios, said: “One of the topics that has been coming up again and again in the Beyond Brunel discussions is the importance of connectivity across the South West region.

“As experts in communication, we’re proud to be asked to produce this podcast and play a small role in connecting people and communities through audio and video in order to share the important messages contained in the podcasts.”

DITCH THE HANDCUFF CONTRACTS

Can you name another industry where it’s standard practice to handcuff customers into long-term contracts – usually 5 years but sometimes more – and sneak in automatic renewals which trigger extensions?

Very ‘20th century’ you might say, but these kinds of one-way contracts are still (unbelievably!) the norm’ in the business telecommunications industry in 2023. Of course, it shouldn’t be that way.

In the current climate, businesses need real clarity from their providers on what they are signed up to, at the agreed price, with the freedom to move on if they don’t get the service they deserve. Simple, right?

Well, it is that simple at Agile Comms. We don’t do handcuffs, just simple, flexible and scalable communications services. That’s why

we are attracting more and more businesses with great customer feedback.

We were born to challenge the big guys and shape our business around your needs, not the other way around.

ACRONYMS’ ENGINEERS DISCOVERING BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC TRANSPORT

Things are turbulent for small businesses right now. In the last few years, we’ve had to respond to Brexit, a global pandemic, war in Europe, a cost-of-living crisis, rising inflation rates, and ever-increasing energy costs.

Like many other small businesses in Devon, Acronyms has felt the impact of this turbulence. It is why the team is always looking for ways to control costs, without limiting productivity or sacrificing quality of service.

For years, Acronyms has relied heavily upon its fleet of vehicles to provide onsite IT support and network installations to clients across the South West. Yet with the cost of diesel often unstable and growing environmental concerns, the team was prompted to consider alternatives, to see if there was a better solution.

After some research, they decided upon all-electric vans. As it turns out, electric vehicles (EVs) offer a host of benefits to small businesses, the most notable being potential cost savings. This was the driving factor behind the investment into all-electric vans. It’s also no secret that EVs will soon be the norm, so it’s also an opportunity to get ahead of the curve.

Very quickly, they noticed a big decrease in running costs. At the time of writing, Acronyms can fully charge its EVs for just £12.00 at Plymouth Science Park, where its headquarters is situated. One full charge gives

a range of approximately 120 miles, which is perfect for city driving. For longer trips, some additional planning for charging stops is required, but Acronyms’ engineers very comfortably operate without range anxiety.

Whilst not every business has charging points at their place of work, they are becoming more prominent across the city, and as they do, the cost savings will be hard for many businesses to ignore.

Since time is money, you may be wondering how charging impacts operations. Well, using a 100kW fast charger, Acronyms’ vans reach up to 80% of their maximum range in less than 30 minutes. Recharging is also aided by energy recapture features such as regenerative braking that help keep their engineers going.

Further economic benefits include £0.00 road tax and lower maintenance and servicing costs. Benefits you might not think about include free parking incentives in certain places and automatic compliance with clean air zones, now active in Bristol and coming to many other cities across the UK.

Aside from the cost savings, the environmental benefits also play a role. A lower carbon footprint and less impact on the local environment is great, especially when the IT and transportation industries already contribute to nearly 20% of global emissions. From a more commercial perspective, Acronyms has also noticed that potential

customers look more favourably upon them when they know about the EVs, with many businesses asking about the experience of using them.

Overall, Acronyms has found EVs to be a sound financial investment, whilst also being good for the environment, and would therefore wholeheartedly recommend other businesses consider investing in them.

If you’d like to learn more about EVs, and how they might benefit your business, Acronyms Managing Director Dave Smith will be talking more about his experience of having all-electric vehicles at the Green Breakfast Networking event at Dartmoor Zoo on Thursday 13 July.

BORN TO BE WILD

Andy Pyle, content manager at pbmedia, attempts to tame the all-electric Cupra Born EV from Vospers Plymouth

CUPRA might seem like the new kid on the motoring marques block.

Its badge has only been around since 2018, but that doesn’t mean SEAT’s sportier sibling doesn’t have pedigree.

The name CUPRA comes from mixing the words ‘Cup and Racing’ - a nod to the brand’s decorated rallying past.

CUPRA’s debut actually came back in 1996 with the launch of the SEAT Ibiza GTI Cupra Sport 16v.

In the years that followed, CUPRA stamped its mark on several popular SEAT models including the Leon and Ateca.

That led to CUPRA replacing SEAT Sport as the brand’s leading independent highperformance badge.

CUPRA has built a reputation for creating powerful cars, but it was only a matter of time

before they moved into the electric market. The result is the Born EV.

What does the CUPRA

Born EV look like?

The all-electric CUPRA Born is based on its cousin, the Volkswagen ID.3. We tested that in a previous edition of Profile and loved its fast throttle and smart tech.

Born EV takes that a step further with more aggressive lines, a meaner grill, and a darker, sportier interior.

Outside you’ll find, as standard, 18-inch ‘Cyclone’ alloy wheels, and LED headlights and taillights.

Inside is a 12-inch navigation system, a 5.3-inch digital cockpit, wireless full link smartphone integration, front sport bucket

seats in ‘Black SEAQUAL’ yarn, a rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control. The V2 model I tested had plenty of upgrades such as 19-inch ‘Typhoon’ alloys and multicoloured ambient lighting.

It also had a wireless charging pad in the centre console and multiple USB-C ports for devices.

I also liked the Copper interior detailing around the cabin which gave it a more sporty feel.

What is the CUPRA Born EV like to drive?

As you’d expect, the Cupra Born EV has much the same performance and range as the ID.3. Having said that, the Born EV feels quick, really quick. Push your foot to the floor and

there’s not a lot that’s going to beat you away from the traffic lights.

It’s available in the UK with two power outputs (204PS and 230PS) and two battery pack options (58kWh and 77kWh), delivering up to 264 and 340 miles (WLTP) of range respectively.

The 58KWH E-Boost model I drove had a 0-62mph time of around 6.6 seconds and even had a head-up display with speed and speed limit notifications.

It’s also extremely smooth, especially over the many speed bumps and potholes around Plymouth.

And because most of us are spending more and more time sitting in traffic, it’s nice to do so with no engine noise.

Switch to ‘B mode’ and you’ll activate the regenerative braking system. This means

when you take your foot off the accelerator, the car will automatically brake for you. Even in drive mode, when you lift off the accelerator the Born EV will automatically slow you down to match the speed limit in that area.

Why should you buy the CUPRA Born EV?

The Born EV has been a huge hit since its launch, with more than 31,000 sold in 2022 alone.

Once a niche marque, CUPRA’s bold styling has made it one of the most popular choices for UK customers.

It’s done that by offering plenty of tech, being fantastic to drive, and it certainly stands out

in an ever-increasing and competitive world of ‘hot’ electric hatches.

That popularity is even more evident when you look at its growing list of accolades.

Best Electric Hot Hatchback at the DrivingElectric Awards 2023. Company Car & Van Medium Electric Car of the Year 2023. Best Electric Car under £40,000 at Business Car Awards 2022. Best Electric Family Car at What Car? Electric Car Awards 2022… You name it, the Born has won it. And it’s certainly not hard to see why.

ENCORE CARRIES ON STEVE’S LEGACY WITH LAUNCH OF UK’S FIRST RECYCLABLE SCHOOL BLAZER

meet Tim Cross of the Circular Textiles Foundation (CTF) Plymouth. Sadly, that joint meeting never actually happened.

However, now, by complete coincidence, independent school uniform retailer Encore in Saltash will soon be taking delivery of the UK’s first fully recyclable school blazer by David Luke Schoolwear, designed in collaboration with the Circular Textiles Foundation (CTF) Plymouth.

Family-owned school uniform manufacturer David Luke has been working in collaboration with the CTF since September 2022, on a journey to review the design and make-up of the bestselling ecoblazer to identify the steps needed to make it a circular garment.

When Steve Whiteway sadly passed away in October 2020, he left an incredible lasting legacy that will live on through those who knew him best.

Steve’s list of lifetime achievements was endless. As well as being a tireless campaigner who raised more than £750,000 for good causes, Steve was a beloved director of Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

Quite simply, he dedicated his life to helping others, whether that was a small business needing help or a community organisation in need of funds.

More than that, he was a shrewd businessman and a wonderful friend and colleague who will be missed by all who knew him.

Among his many accolades are the Prime Minister’s Points of Light award. He even had a train named after him with the words, ‘Steve Whiteway, volunteering and serving the Plymouth community for over 50 years’.

But what you may not have known is that Steve was also working closely alongside lifelong friend Marilyn Grose, owner of Encore in Saltash, to increase awareness and supplies of eco-friendly uniform.

Part of their work involved attending a Schools Sustainability Conference in Plymouth where they exhibited blazers made from recycled plastic bottles, made by David Luke Schoolwear.

Steve was an award-winning environmental champion; he was renowned for making connections and later suggested they should

Encore Uniforms, Saltash will be placing orders in time for families to buy for the new school year at no extra cost.

Marilyn Grose, owner of Encore, Saltash explains: “We started supplying uniforms about six years ago as an addition to our longstanding costume business. We have been delighted to have David Luke as one of our suppliers and especially for our ‘eco blazers’.

“In that short time, word of mouth has spread significantly and parents have been thrilled with the quality and the fact that we are all making a difference to the environment.

“Steve and I were working hard together on the eco-friendly uniforms and he actually said to me before he was poorly that we should meet up with Tim Cross from Circular Textiles Foundation in Plymouth.

“I finally managed to catch up with Tim on a Zoom call sometime after Steve passed away but by sheer coincidence, I was at a meeting with David Luke, my blazer supplier, and realised that Tim was the main speaker and that it was his company they had teamed up with to create this ‘first’. This is incredibly exciting and I know Steve would have been so thrilled.

“The schoolwear industry has made significant progress in sustainability, recognising the importance of reducing its environmental impact and promoting ethical practices.

“From incorporating more sustainable materials such as recycled polyester to implementing takeback schemes and preloved initiatives. We are very proud to be trail blazing this new circularity initiative that offers

a genuine solution to tackling textile waste and look forward to sharing news of the innovation with our customers.”

Ryan Cooke, Product Manager at David Luke, says: “In order to manufacture circular garments, we need to design clothes which are made to be remade whilst ensuring the price of the garment doesn’t change.

“Consultation from the CTF and Project Plan B has enabled us to transition our blazers into mono-fabric recyclable garments, compatible with thermo-mechanical recycling processes.”

Designing for circularity will see David Luke’s bestselling eco-blazer reimagined in five subtle but critical ways to ensure it is suitable for the recycling process when it reaches the end of its life.

Ryan adds: “The key areas of the school blazer that we needed to rethink or remove were the lining, swing ticket, brand label, zippers and pockets. The new circular blazer will appear unchanged at first glance, but the impact of these changes will enable the garment to be fully recyclable.

“At the end of life, we feed the blazers into a thermo-mechanical recycling machine which converts the fabric into PET pellets. At this point PET pellets move into conventional manufacturing, supporting the circular principle of keeping raw materials at their highest possible value in the manufacturing chain.”

Thank you!”

Ollie Jackman, sponsor and runner, added: “RunDevon has been a fantastic event to be involved with. The running is fun and rewarding, but the real joy is seeing a growing group of people enjoying themselves and helping ramp up the volume for Young Devon. The community spirit of the weekend is unlike anything else. I’m really excited to see RunDevon grow again this year!”
