FIRST WORD

The countdown is on to the 2023 Devon Business Show, and there’s no better way to start this autumn edition of Profile than by thanking our partners and exhibitors.

The county’s biggest Business Show returns to Plymouth Pavilions this October and I’m thrilled to reveal that nearly all of the 99 stands have already been secured, with only limited opportunities remaining.

Our unmissable event will once again reflect the Chamber’s three strategic priorities –People, Planet and Purpose – supported by City College Plymouth, YGS Landscapes Ltd and Wildanet as the respective ‘People and Skills’, ‘Planet’ and ‘Purpose’ headline partners.

You can find out more about our partners and exhibitors on pages 18-20 of Profile.

This edition of Profile features a special report on how the Tech sector is powering the ‘rise and rise’ of Exeter.

We look at how the reinvention of its historic city centre, growth of its tech and digital sector, world-class university and the muchheralded arrival of big-name retailers such as John Lewis and Ikea have all counted towards its growing global reputation.

It’s a truly exciting time for businesses in Exeter, and its digital and tech sector, well supported by education, is pointing the way.

Continuing the subject of education, after months of working with hundreds of the region’s businesses about the future of work and the skills needed, our Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) team is delighted to publish our full report.

Jointly led by Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Somerset Chamber of Commerce, the Government-backed LSIP was implemented to find out what employers need to access a skilled labour market equipped for the future of work. Find out more on page 21 of Profile.

This edition of Profile also features no fewer than NINE social diary pages in Profile this quarter, featuring pictures from our own events and yours.

That includes a look back at the PABC dinner, our unforgettable Meet The Buyer event at Home Park, and the wonderful St Luke’s Midnight Walk.

Our Chamber Family has a packed programme coming up in September and October, and we look forward to seeing even more of you in the coming months.

BABCOCK LAUNCHES SKILLS ACADEMY TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF TOMORROW

Babcock has launched the Babcock Skills Academy, to enhance its workforce’s capabilities and ensure they are equipped to meet the evolving challenges its customers will face in the future.

The Skills Academy uses a hybrid teaching model, that combines cutting-edge digital resources and hands-on training, to rapidly get Babcock’s people ready to deliver the critical capabilities its customers need.

Open to all employees and new recruits, the Skills Academy will operate in partnership with local education establishments and complements Babcock’s award-winning early careers programmes.

Initially launching at its Devonport facility, with a focus on submarines and critical nuclear skills, the Skills Academy’s training facilities enable learning of the complex skills required

to perform deep submarine maintenance. Underpinning Babcock’s commitment to ensure its people have the training to perform complex, mission-critical tasks, more than 2,000 people are expected to pass through the Skills Academy in its first three years, and a further 10,000 over the following five years. By focusing on targeted learning, the Skills Academy will accelerate time to competence –in some cases by as much as 67% – compared to traditional training methods.

Dominic Kieran, Babcock Chief Executive Nuclear, said, “Our ambitious, modern and collaborative Skills Academy will deliver enhanced capability – now and in the longterm – to drive submarine availability and equip our Royal Navy customer with the assets they need to conduct their duties in the defence of our nation.

“With the largest nuclear qualified workforce in the UK, and our vast experience of supporting the UK submarine enterprise across the submarine lifecycle, we are uniquely placed to apply this extensive knowledge to our training programmes and deliver the pipeline of talent required now and in the future.

“The Babcock Skills Academy is more than just a training solution, it’s a commitment to our people, our industry and our customer –their mission is our mission.”

Following the Babcock Skills Academy launch at Devonport, the programme will then be deployed further across Babcock’s naval nuclear activity and beyond.

THERE’S A NEW BUS IN TOWN TO HELP STAMP OUT SPIKING

Plymouth Citybus are continuing their collaboration with Stamp Out Spiking in order to spread awareness on drink spiking across the city of Plymouth, through their “NEVER HAVE I EVER” campaign with posters on buses around the city. We are now proud to announce the Stamp Out Spiking bus displaying Spiking Safety and Awareness information can now been seen in service around the city of Plymouth.

People who have been spiked often act as if they are drunk, but if they have been drugged, there’s a limited amount of time before all traces will disappear from their bloodstream –making it important to spot and act on quickly. This is why collaboration with Citybus is so important to help drivers recognise symptoms and safeguard the public.

Plymouth Citybus is at the heart of the local community offering a local bus service network that provides a comprehensive service 7 days a week to its customers in Plymouth. Carrying over 18 million passengers each year, including many students, it’s a prime way to raise awareness around drink spiking.

The bus will be officially launched on Wednesday 8th March 2023 to celebrate International Women’s Day and the

work being done throughout the city by organisations, working in partnership, to keep our communities safe. We will be stopping at Marjon’s University, University of Plymouth and City College as we tour around the city.

The bus will be at Crowne Plaza at 1:30pm on Wednesday 8th March 2023 to support the International Women’s Day Conference and we will be touring the universities and city centre during the middle of the day to highlight the need for Spiking awareness and safeguarding. We will be handing out safety information and drink protectors.

Richard Stevens, MD of Plymouth Citybus, said: “Plymouth Citybus are proud to have

teamed up with Stamp Out Spiking to provide a branded bus which will help to bring awareness of the dangers of drink and drugs spiking in the city”

Dawn Dines, CEO and Founder of Stamp Out Spiking, said: “We are delighted to continue working with Plymouth Citybus to spread important safety information. It’s essential that people realise the symptoms of spiking, as it’s so important to act quickly to safeguard potential victims of this crime.”

Dawn Dines has been campaigning against drink spiking for nearly two decades. Drink spiking is a hugely under-reported problem that affects people the world over. It’s impossible to get exact statistics for drink-spiking due to it being so under-reported, but reports are increasing year on year according to UK police forces.

NEW RAILWAY STATION OPENS AT MARSH BARTON

Transport Secretary Mark Harper officially opened the brand-new railway station at Marsh Barton in Exeter in July 2023.

Transport Secretary, Mark Harper was also in the county to mark the completion of the sea wall at Dawlish and both projects are seen as a vital boost to local and regional rail connections.

The Transport Secretary said: “I am delighted to see the completion of two major projects today, delivering a government commitment to improve a vital rail route for passengers in the South West.

“These projects demonstrate a government that is delivering our promises, investing in vital infrastructure and improving transport connections to help grow the economy.”

The station will be served by hourly Great Western Railway services between Paignton and Exmouth, with half-hourly services at peak times.

The two platforms are linked by the pedestrian overbridge which has ramps to facilitate cyclists and provide disabled access to the whole station.

Great Western Railway Managing Director,

Mark Hopwood, said: “New stations such as this are vital in bringing the railway closer to people as we become mindful of the need to live and travel more sustainably.

“Marsh Barton will help to ease congestion on some of Exeter’s busiest roads and offer a more environmentally friendly option for those who normally drive into the area. Marsh Barton is one of three GWR stations to open this year along with Portway ‘Park and Ride’ in Bristol and Reading Green Park, and we are excited for the benefits these stations will bring to the local economy, to residents, businesses and leisure travellers in the areas they serve.”

Delivered and funded by Devon County Council, with contributions from the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership and Exeter City Council and Teignbridge District Councils and over £3 million from the Department for Transport, the new station will better connect the community and offer greater access to employment, business and education opportunities.

Crucially, it will also provide a quick, alternative link to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, allowing residents to access essential medical services more easily.

TECH SECTOR POWERING RISE AND RISE OF EXETER

EXETER IS ACCUSTOMED TO BEING ONE OF THE UK’S STRONGEST ECONOMIES. BUT ITS UPWARD CURVE ISN’T ABOUT TO FLATTEN OUT, AS PROFILE FOUND IN A SPECIAL REPORT.

Exeter has enjoyed being labelled a ‘city on the rise’ for a while.

The reinvention of its historic city centre, growth of its tech and digital sector, worldclass university and the much-heralded arrival of big-name retailers such as John Lewis and Ikea have all counted towards its growing global reputation.

The mix of large employers such as the Met Office, EDF and the Pennon Group alongside an army of innovative smaller firms has been a proven recipe for growth.

“Exeter is a great location for the Met Office headquarters with good transport links by road, rail and air making it easily accessible from other parts of the UK and overseas,” explains Rob Varley Operations and Services Director at the Met Office.

“Since locating here from the Southeast of England in 2003 we have seen genuine benefits in terms of operating costs, staff recruitment and retention, supportive relationships with the city and county authorities and excellent links with the University of Exeter and Exeter College.”

That good PR for Exeter over the past few years, not least because of the wellfunctioning relationship between public and private sectors, has helped attract countless businesses to the city and its surrounds.

From upwardly mobile tech startups looking to be part of a cluster to internationally established names, Exeter has created an economic aura and pull that cities many times larger would be jealous of.

It’s two hours from London on the train, has an international airport, plus an abundance of thriving villages in the beautiful countryside surrounding it. The stylish city centre and quayside continue to impress many years after the opening of the Princesshay regeneration in 2007.

That’s not to say Exeter hasn’t had its challenges or is immune to the effects of the Covid pandemic. The city centre has certainly felt the weight of pressure on the retail sector, but a mixed-use approach that incorporates leisure has shown opportunity. And it wasn’t long ago that a Centre for Cities report ranked Exeter in its top four strongest economies. For over a decade, it’s been in the top 2% for economic growth, per the UK Competitiveness Index.

By 2040, Greater Exeter wants to be a global leader in sustainable living and one of the most active, healthy, and accessible cities in England. Greater Exeter’s shared vision for growth is as a connected cityregion consisting of thriving linked urban and rural communities at all scales set within

exceptional surroundings.

It’s also not unusual to hear of reference to the city’s entrepreneurial spirit when talking about any of the above. The clusters of businesses forming around centres such as Exeter Science Park and Marsh Barton come to Exeter because they are start-ups on the rise, looking for a place to accelerate their growth.

The public sector support for these areas is clear to see - this summer’s opening of the £16 million Marsh Barton Railway Station was delivered and funded by Devon County Council and had support from Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership and Exeter City Council and Teignbridge District Councils and over £3 million from the Department for Transport.

Karl Tucker, Chair of the Heart of the South West LEP, said: “It is fantastic to see that the new station at Marsh Barton, Exeter is due to open shortly, improving connectivity for our local communities and supporting growth, especially around the west and south of Exeter area, as well as the wider region. We are proud to have supported the project with £4.4m of our Growth Deal fund, as part of our ambition to drive clean and inclusive growth.”

Part of the appeal for businesses basing themselves in Exeter is access to high-calibre

The close proximity of specialists means that businesses have good access to the expertise needed for research and development. In particular, the University of Exeter is home to a range of advanced institutes and centres, helping researchers to thrive and forge pioneering collaborations with organisations and institutions, working with businesses, universities, local authorities, the community, and others to bring the benefits of expertise to industry and society.

Currently, academics are working with immersive technologies to explore human challenges. These include the role of anxiety in falling for the elderly, cognitive bias in decision-making in the military, and whether audiences’ attention is grabbed the way creatives intend. The University has launched an interdisciplinary and multi-lab network, Exeter Immersive, to push this research even further.

Exeter College has bespoke centres to train local young people in specialist fields and is home to the recently opened Digital and Data Centre - part of a wider South West Institute of Technology (SWIOT) plan to revolutionise digital, engineering and manufacturing technology across the region.

The new £10.3 million building is match-funded by the college and focuses on providing education opportunities in the digital sector, including courses around data analytics, cyber security and software development.

College Principle John Laramy describes it as “a vital development for our city and region, it is critical that we equip our students and apprentices with the skills of the future, that are in such demand from employers.”

Beyond the city, Exeter is complemented by a network of economic centres in East Devon - the ever-growing Science Park sits on the edge of the city, along with developments at the Power Park beside Exeter Airport and the 100-acre Skypark - described as the South West’s most significant Business Park development, predicted to create up to 6,500 new jobs with a significant positive impact on the local economy as part of the wider Exeter and East Devon New Growth Point initiative.

Exeter may have enjoyed more than a decade of being on the up - but despite the

pandemic it’s showing no signs of slowing down. It’s digital and tech sector, well supported by education, is pointing the way.

Case study: Ground-breaking sustainable hotel to open in Exeter

The first ‘spade in the ground’ has marked the building of a new sustainable net zero hotel on the edge of Exeter.

Zeal Hotels has signed an Exclusivity Agreement with IHG Hotels & Resorts for the hotel, which will be managed by Valor Hospitality

And it has selected Exeter Science Park as the location for the groundbreaking project. The property, which is due to open next year, is aiming for a minimum BREEAM rating

leading SIEM solution, Monikal.

The company said: “Along with being our SOC HQ, the new office will provide our growing team with a beautiful view of the Devon countryside. The Exeter Science Park is a fantastic location for growing STEMM businesses like us, and the move to the brand new George Parker Bidder building is particularly exciting, as it marks the latest phase in our growth journey at the Science Park.

“We started with a small, two-person office, and have expanded into larger offices within the incubator space several times. Now we’ve grown to the stage where it’s time for us to move on, and the new Grow-out space at the Exeter Science Park is the perfect location for doing so, as we will remain part of the thriving community of innovative STEMM businesses based there as we continue to grow to meet the increasing demand for cyber security services”

Case study: Funding boost for health specialist Diagnexia has received almost £50,000 funding through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for a new digital pathology scanner, helping healthcare organisations connect with specialists around the world.

Diagnexia provides a cutting-edge pathology diagnostics platform which helps hospitals and laboratories refer medical samples to an international network of specialist clinicians, helping to reduce their diagnostic turnaround times and pathology backlogs.

of Excellent, with a target of Outstanding. Solar panels will ensure that the hotel will generate all the energy it requires.

Tim Wheeldon, managing director, Zeal Hotels, said: “The final pieces of our plan to create the first net zero carbon branded hotel are coming together and we are thrilled to be starting work on this innovative and highly sustainable project.”

Case study: Cybersecurity specialists move to Science Park

Industry-leading cybersecurity specialists Seciourious moved to Exeter Science Park in 2022 to facilitate its fast growth. The base is home to its dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC) facility, powered by the world-

The company is rapidly scaling, and recently expanded its headquarters at Exeter Science Park, creating 30 jobs, after reporting a 450% growth in demand since December 2022, with a medium sized hospital submitting around 500 cases per month.

To ensure Diagnexia can meet demand and help more hospitals access their streamlined, digital service, the Heart of the South West LEP has awarded the company £49,780 through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The funding will be used for an additional scanner at their Exeter site, allowing them to offer a shorter turnaround time for diagnosis and consultations. The new scanner will also create five new jobs for lab technicians at the Science Park.

HOW TO USE TECHNOLOGY TO GROW YOUR

Real-time, efficient data collection

Technology enables data collection and analysis in real-time, providing valuable insights into customer behaviour, business performance, and employee productivity. Utilise this data to improve strategies and drive growth.

Automation

Automation can be a game-changer. Implement technology to automate customer support, production, inventory, sales, and other administrative processes. This will help save time and resources for more crucial tasks.

Effective collaboration

Enhance collaboration and connectivity within your organisation by using tools like Microsoft 365, Slack, and Trello. Facilitating teamwork leads to improved efficiency and productivity.

Grow your customer base

Leverage technology to acquire more customers, with the use of automated email or social media campaigns as well as customer relationship marketing systems that can target specific types of customers.

Technology should support your overall strategic business goals. A good place to start is to understand what your customers want and work back to how technology can help you deliver on those goals.

While technology is powerful, it is not always the answer to everything. Remember to focus on other core aspects of your business, such as staff skills development, customer understanding, and the financial health of your business.

Regularly monitor and review the effectiveness of your technology solutions to check that it is delivering the benefits that you would expect. If it isn’t, reconfigure your systems or consider finding better alternatives.

Consider these top tips for technologydriven growth:

1. As technology will impact much of the business, having the right person in charge to manage business change through Technology, People and Process is essential.

2. Seek expert advice if unsure about the right technology for your business. Explore funding opportunities or expertise support networks.

3. Start with a clear plan addressing specific problems or opportunities. Avoid trying to fix everything at once.

flight departing Edinburgh at 6.00pm.

Edinburgh Airport is just eight miles from the city centre with excellent public transport links, including a tram service that runs every seven minutes.

Flights UK, Ireland and the USA

The additional flights complement a range of other year-round domestic routes from Exeter Airport. As well as Edinburgh there are regular scheduled flights to Glasgow, Newcastle, Jersey, Guernsey and Belfast.

And business passengers looking to go further afield can connect seamlessly from Exeter to New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington and Toronto via Dublin, avoiding the unnecessary travel to the busy London Hubs.

Dublin Airport is one of the few that offers pre-clearing of US immigration, which means passengers are treated as domestic arrivals without having to spend time queuing through immigration. And with through-ticketing and luggage transfers all included, passengers can enjoy a hassle-free trip.

25 destinations on offer

Stephen Wiltshire, Managing Director of Exeter Airport, said: “We’re delighted that Loganair is continuing to expand its operations from Exeter Airport with up to twice-daily flights to Edinburgh, complementing its year-

we remain committed to enhancing business and leisure travel opportunities for our customers.

“Our Dublin service with onward travel to North America and Canada is proving increasingly popular because of the time saved, and we are actively exploring how we can forge links with other hubs including Manchester, Paris and Amsterdam.”

Executive lounge

Exeter Airport includes a comfortable executive lounge for passengers wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the airport terminal before they fly, irrespective of airline or class of travel. Bookable via the airport’s website, it includes comfortable seating, free WiFi, and drinks and snacks.

Exeter Airport also offers a wide variety of sunshine destinations in Cyprus, Greece, Spain and Turkey with operators TUI and Ryanair.

More sunshine routes

This summer Ryanair expanded its operation from Exeter with a new twiceweekly service to Faro on the Portuguese

new 10 and 11-night breaks, and increased frequency to Dalaman in Turkey. The 11% increase in seat capacity follows an 8% increase this year.

Top for customer service

Exeter Airport is part of Regional and City Airports, the airport management division of Rigby Group plc. It owns and operates Exeter Airport, Bournemouth Airport, Norwich Airport and Coventry Airport and operates Solent Airport on behalf of Fareham Borough Council.

Exeter Airport was ranked best for customer service in an independent survey of UK airports last year and has been top ranked by the Civil Aviation Authority for the quality of service provided to disabled and less mobile passengers, ranking ‘very good’ – the highest possible –alongside its sister airports in Bournemouth and Norwich. The last decade has been marked by technological advancements and digital transformation across the board. Exeter, a city steeped in history and tradition, and the surrounding East Devon area is no exception and is now embracing the wave of innovation driven by digitally led programmes and artificial intelligence (AI). As digital technology swiftly evolves, businesses are identifying the potential of AI in transforming their operations. AI solutions are redefining efficiency, productivity, and decision-making processes across various industries in the region.

At Westcotts Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, we are also embracing this change and reshaping traditional accounting practices, opening new doors of opportunity for businesses. Servicing a range of new and exciting digital services, we leverage technology to provide our clients in Exeter and East Devon with efficient, accurate, and insightful accounting data enabling better decision-making. The great news is that businesses of all sizes can benefit from the insights from digital accounting technology, across multiple sectors.

Now at the forefront and the automatic choice for many businesses, cloud accounting systems that enable real-time collaboration, effortless data sharing, and secure storage now provide digital AI-led solutions that can save hours for any business. With cloud accounting technology, our clients in the region can access their financial information from anywhere, making remote work and business operations more seamless without the need for substantial equipment or software outlay and updates. Gone are the days of manual data entry and tedious reconciliation’s. Through the implementation of cloud accounting software, we have automated the bookkeeping process for hundreds of businesses with bank feeds and processing rules, significantly reducing the likelihood of human error and freeing up time for more strategic tasks.

Cloud accounting software also unlocks a world of linked applications that can target a specific system or operation within a business, often with the use of AI at its heart to further optimise processes. Throughout our recent digital services programme, a number of key areas are leading the way;

• Document Capture Tools - These tools use optical character recognition (OCR) technology to convert scanned documents into editable and searchable digital files. This not only saves time but also reduces the risk of errors associated with manual data entry.

• Supplier Invoice Approval and Payment

Tools - These tools automate the flow of invoice approval workflow, passing through the various approval stages with automated notification and responses and a full audit trail. This quickly reduces the need for manual intervention and misplaced invoices. Payment tools then can aggregate and set up payment runs for multiple invoices and suppliers, providing timed payments in line with cashflow requirements without the need to manually set up individual payments via banking services.

• Staff Management - Managing staffrelated expenses, jobs, and projects can be time- consuming and challenging for businesses. AI-powered tools simplify these processes, enabling easy processes to record and repay employee expenses, allocate resources efficiently, and monitor project progress in real-time. Businesses can improve project delivery timelines and increase overall productivity.

• Inventory Management - For businesses involved in selling physical products, inventory management is a critical aspect of operations. AI inventory management tools can accurately forecast demand, manage stock levels, and automate reordering processes. By leveraging these tools, businesses can maintain optimal inventory levels, reduce carrying costs, and avoid stockouts, leading to improved customer satisfaction and profitability. AI-powered data analysis tools are also enabling businesses to gain deeper insights from their vast datasets. Traditional methods of data analysis often required significant manual input and limited in their scope. However, AI can process large amounts of data in realtime, identifying patterns and trends that might have not been spotted otherwise allowing businesses to be agile and make data- driven decisions faster and more accurately.

A host of other applications exist covering

almost every facet of business operations and businesses should seek out professional help identifying what processes may benefit from digital systems. At Westcotts, we’ve specifically developed a stand-alone service to map existing accounting processes and review at each part, where improvements could be made by implementing digital applications such as the ones outlined above.

As businesses across the region continue to integrate AI into their operations, collaboration and knowledge-sharing will be crucial, something we are proud to be a part of. Major start-ups all based within Exeter have now attracted major investment funds and named within ‘rising star’ awards as businesses are no longer held back by physical limitations and instead empowered by the ability to operate outside of the main UK cities using the same technology that is also driving products and service development.

By working together, Exeter and East Devon can become a hub of innovation, attracting top talent and fostering an environment of continuous growth and prosperity. With Westcotts, businesses of any size and sector can confidently navigate the complexities of the digital world and seize the opportunities it presents.

7 USER TESTING TIPS FOR YOUR TECHNOLOGY

Obtaining feedback and insights from your target audience through user testing is crucial in creating effective software technology products that meet users’ expectations. With these seven essential tips, you can improve your final product and ensure better user testing experiences.

1. Define Clear Objectives

Set clear objectives before evaluating your product or design. Define specific areas to test and collect relevant data. This helps tailor your approach and identify actionable insights.

2. Recruit Diverse Participants

Sometimes, technology products are manipulated by highly skilled specialists that act on behalf of the end client. Recruiting a diverse group of participants within the boundaries of the nature that the product allows can provide invaluable insight for building the right solution; this will expose a broader spectrum of user needs and potential issues, leading to more comprehensive results.

3. Create Realistic Scenarios

Realistic scenarios provide meaningful insights and enhance the authenticity of your user testing. By presenting participants with tasks and challenges they can relate to, you can observe their interactions with your product and identify areas for improvement.

4. Encourage Honest Feedback

Encourage participants to provide honest and open feedback in a non-judgmental environment. With this approach, you’ll receive candid insights that can lead to impactful improvements.

5. Observe and Take Notes

It’s essential to actively observe the sessions and take detailed notes to record participants’ actions, comments, and expressions to capture valuable observations that may not be evident from data alone. These qualitative insights can provide a deeper understanding of user experiences and motivations.

6. Iterate and Test Again

User testing is an iterative process. After implementing changes based on the initial round of testing, conduct additional ones to validate your improvements. Each iteration will produce a more refined product that better aligns with user needs and preferences.

7. Analyse and Act on Findings

Analyse the data and identify patterns and trends after you have iterated and validated your findings. Use this information to make informed decisions about necessary design alterations or updates. Action based on user testing findings is crucial for creating successful and user-centric products.

At Made with Maturity, we help product owners of apps, dashboards and software to make their technology intuitive and as frictionless as possible. Get in touch for a chat, to see how our UX and UI design services can make your technology really shine.

GIGABIT BROADBAND WORTH OVER £1 BILLION TO DEVON

A new independent report, launched in Westminster, analysing the social, economic and environmental benefits of digital inclusion, predicts that the roll out of a gigabit capable broadband network in Devon will generate over £1 billion of new business gross value added (GVA) by 2030. Here, Wildanet explain more about the report.

The Connecting Devon report, published by policy institute Curia, and commissioned by South West internet provider Wildanet, shows that Devon will massively benefit from gigabit-speed broadband, as a result of increased productivity, revenues, export and SME growth.

Curia also forecasts a major environmental impact, with more than £400 million of equivalent carbon taxation savings between 2021 and 2030 (£45 million per annum by 2025 and £83 million per annum by 2030).

Wildanet is currently working in more than 15 areas across Devon to bring its gigabit-capable network to more than 25,000 homes and businesses across the county including Ashburton, Axminster, Holsworthy, Ipplepen, South Brent, South Molton, Totnes, Yealmpton and Yelverton.

Up to now, the larger broadband commercial operators have only deployed infrastructure where it is most profitable to do so, leaving rural and harder to reach areas isolated and without high-speed broadband. And Devon underperforms compared to the rest of the UK, with only 54% having access to gigabit speed broadband, against a national figure of 75%.

Wildanet, based in Liskeard in Cornwall, has been a champion of digital inclusion since its start-up in 2017 and commissioned the research to understand better the full impact of high-speed broadband.

The need for lightning-fast gigabitcapable broadband is recognised by the UK government, as they roll out their flagship £5 billion programme to connect hard-toreach communities. In January 2023, the UK government awarded Wildanet with two contracts (worth £36 million) to provide gigabit-capable broadband to more than 19,000 premises in South West Cornwall and

Mid Cornwall as part of Project Gigabit.

Additionally, the report highlights that 39% of people in the South West have ‘low’ or ‘very low’ digital skills and in Devon 78,000 people have still never used the internet.

The case for gigabit broadband is compelling and has been accelerated by the pandemic, with home working, video communications, remote services, online banking and retail creating huge, unprecedented demand.

In a work environment, especially for small

research suggesting that such connectivity enables more people to work from home and a full fibre nation could save 300 million commuting trips each year — with three billion fewer kilometres travelled by car.

Based on the current research, the additional impact of gigabit broadband in Devon could be over £400 million of equivalent carbon taxation savings between 2021 and 2030 (£45 million per annum by 2025 and £83 million per annum by 2030).

Helen Wylde, CEO Wildanet, said: “This report highlights not only the opportunity we have to bring transformational change to those in rural and remote communities, but the responsibility we have in achieving it. Our mission at Wildanet is to end digital poverty through connecting people, communities, and businesses, wherever they are in Cornwall and Devon.”

to medium-sized businesses, the availability of high-bandwidth, resilient and affordable communications is essential and helps underpin growth, productivity, new jobs and investment.

There is also significant new potential for inward investment, business start-ups and higher-value jobs for Devon.

In social terms, the benefits of digital inclusion to health and wellbeing, as well as education and skills can be transformational and even finding jobs is now typically done online.

In the South West, some eight per cent of people have no digital abilities for work and only 37% of people have the ability to do all 20 essential digital tasks necessary for work.

The environmental impact of gigabitcapable broadband is also huge, with

“While this report is specific to Devon, there are clearly implications for the provision of high-speed broadband nationally”.

LSIP REPORT IDENTIFIES 20 PRIORITY AREAS TO DELIVER REGION’S WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE

After months of working with hundreds of the region’s businesses about the future of work and the skills needed, our Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) team is delighted to publish our full report.

Jointly led by Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Somerset Chamber of Commerce, the Government-backed LSIP was implemented to find out what employers need to access a skilled labour market equipped for the future of work.

The result is a progressive plan which sets out 20 key priorities to deliver from this point on, so that schools, colleges and universities produce the right skills to give Devon and Somerset businesses the best possible future workforce.

The published plan details the key areas that will be prioritised in the coming months. Those priorities range from ensuring businesses’ voices are constantly heard in education with meaningful two-way communication

to improving digital skills in education, recognising that using digital technology is now an essential requirement for everyone at work.

A detailed roadmap for the region has been drawn up for how the 20 priorities will be delivered, working with businesses and education providers – colleges, universities and schools.

Devon & Plymouth Chamber CEO, Stuart Elford, said: “The foundations of that potential lie in our region’s natural assets and sheer scale of innovation taking place here. We’re a Blue Peninsula defined by our sustainable relationship with the water that serves as an international base for global brands leading in marine technology.

“The Heart of the South West offers UK plc the opportunity of world-class regenerative growth. But only with a skilled workforce fit for the future.

“With a membership of hundreds of

meaningfully engaged employers and working alongside/liaising with other employer representative bodies to represent a wider range of businesses, the two Chambers have been able to get to the heart of what employers need in the future while maintaining a healthy dialogue with the education sector.”

Somerset Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Emma Rawlings, said: “The Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) is a starting point to finally crack our skills provision struggles.

“Our LSIP is not just a survey to produce yet another report. It is about addressing the barriers to skills and challenges that hold our region back and putting the foundations in place to fill them.”

The full plan, along with detailed feedback and case studies by businesses involved, can be viewed at devonandsomersetlsip.co.uk.

DEVON & PLYMOUTH CHAMBER MEMBERS UNITE TO SELL HISTORIC CORNWALL HOTEL

One of Cornwall’s most iconic hotels has sold thanks to the hard work of three Chamber members.

One of Cornwall’s most iconic hotels has sold thanks to the hard work of three Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce members.

Chamber Patrons GA Solicitors, together with Lang Town & Country and Wolferstans Solicitors, have secured the sale of the 113-year-old Whitsand Bay Hotel for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Located in the coastal village of Portwrinkle, this wonderful Grade II Listed building is just minutes from the beach and boasts a breath-taking cliff top location with stunning sea views.

The historic hotel boasts 32 bedrooms and has been a family-run business for more than a decade, after owners Chris and Jennifer Phillips fell in love with the property back in 2003. The building and its substantial grounds have been purchased by the Matthews family as part of a significant development project.

The husband-and-wife team, supported by their three sons, hope to restore the hotel to its former glory, including spa facilities, gym, and swimming pool. There is also potential to add additional dwellings within the two-acre site.

The project is expected to require an investment in excess of £6 million and take around three years to complete. Split over three phases, the first stage will see the construction of three luxury homes, followed by the development of several other residential properties, before refurbishing the hotel in the third and final phase.

GA Solicitors’ commercial property

department advised the new owners on all aspects of the property purchase and its various assets, including funding and refinancing.

It is hoped the redevelopment of the site will lead to the employment of at last 50 people, with a further 30 to 40 staff being required to run the hotel when it is up and running.

Tony Dupreez, partner of GA Solicitors and the commercial property solicitor who advised on the purchase, commented:

“This site is of huge importance to the local area. Not only will it employ a local workforce, but the hotel will once again attract visitors from all over the country.

“With the beach and a high-quality golf course just minutes away, it certainly ticks a number of coveted boxes. I was delighted to support and work with Louisa and Terry on this project and will look forward to seeing the project unfold over the next three years.”

The site was marketed and the sale secured by Lang Town & Country’s Land & New Homes division.

James Clarke, Director at Lang Town & Country, said: “Our Land & New Homes team has been working with the

family-owned Whitsand Bay Hotel for some time. It was a complex site with a variety of development opportunities within the grounds.

“Whitsand Bay Hotel really is a special location next to the local golf club and looking out over Portwrinkle beach in South East Cornwall.

“The sale itself was one of the toughest in my career to get over the line. We were very lucky to have two excellent solicitors in Pippa TannerWood, from Wolferstans, and Tony Dupreez, from GA Solicitors, who communicated brilliantly to make this deal happen.

“The new owners have some truly exciting plans for the site and we look forward to watching this develop in due course.”

New owner, Louisa Matthews added: “It has taken some time to get to this point and we are very excited to now be able to take this project forward.

“Although the hotel has planning permission to become apartments, we really wanted to maintain its heritage and integrity, instead choosing to refurbish the building and bring it back to its former glory.

“My husband and I, along with our three sons, will oversee all aspects of this development and will strive to deliver a high-quality site which makes the most of its breath-taking location.”

TRAIN AND TRAIL GO HAND-IN-HAND

GWR’s Transport Integration Manager Luke Farley explains why a walk along the South West Coast Path is the ideal match with trips by train and bus.

The use of public transport in combination with a sustainable leisure activity such as walking is a natural combination. The 630mile long South West Coast Path stretches from Minehead in West Somerset along the north coast of Devon and Cornwall and around Land’s End to head along the south coast all the way to Poole Harbour in Dorset. The entire route is clearly signposted and is met all the way round by the rail and bus networks, giving easy access to endlessly beautiful walks without relying on the car.

The added benefit to reaching the path by train and bus is that walkers can make a one way journey – extending the pointto-point distance walked without having to double back. For example, an easy option is to catch the train to Totnes and then the 164 bus down to Salcombe. The coast path can then be enjoyed around to Dartmouth where bus 92 will take you back to Totnes. There are countless similar itineraries waiting to be enjoyed.

Another favourite of mine is to catch a bus from Plymouth station out to Whitsand Bay. It’s a terrific walk around the coast of the Rame Peninsula, taking in beautiful beaches, coves and the fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand before heading across the parkland of Mount Edgcumbe to board the Cremyll Ferry back into Plymouth. There is flexible Beryl Bike hire available at the ferry allowing you to glide back up to the station should you have done all your walking for the day.

The South West Coast Path is there to be enjoyed by people of all abilities – even a mile or two is a real treat and some incredible scenery can

be enjoyed without straying far from major settlements. Half a mile along the path from Lynton (reached every hour by the 310 bus which itself is timed to connect with trains at Barnstaple) is Valley of Rocks. Once you’ve been, you’ll never forget its sheer, rockstrewn drops down to the sea, feral goats and deafening peace. It’s about an hour out and back, so easily done in between visits to the town’s wide range of shops, cafes and pubs.

Both rail and bus networks offer a selection of flexible and good value tickets that mean walkers can enjoy the freedom of the area. The ‘Ride Cornwall’ ticket, £18 for adults with discounts for child and family tickets, gives unlimited bus and rail travel in Plymouth and Cornwall. There are many other bus and rail-only ranger tickets are available for many areas too. The majority of train and bus routes meeting the path operate on at least an hourly basis (often more frequently), but it is worth checking before you set off.

You don’t have to wait for the

summer to enjoy a visit – the beauty of the coast is as much about the dramatic off-season weather as it is about sunshine and blue seas. There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. Wherever you decide to visit, let the bus and train take the strain and see where an adventure along the South West Coast Path might take you.

To plan a journey by combined train and bus, visit: traveline.info More information about the South West Coast Path can be found at: www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk

23 Autumn 2023 Chamber Profile SECTOR FOCUS: TRANSPORT
The railway offers direct access to the South West Coast Path in many places across the West Country. A combined journey of train and bus expands those options considerably. St Ives and Carbis Bay are locations where the rail network provides direct access to the South West Coast Path. Photo: Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership / Anthony Christie Catching a train and then a bus opens up even more opportunity to enjoy the path by public transport. The Rail Link bus from Barnstaple to Lynton & Lynmouth even extolls the virtues of a walk to Valley of Rocks on the back.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND SAFETY

WHY A ROBUST CLAIMS DEFENCE IS VITAL TO YOUR BUSINESS

When health and safety incidents happen at work, compensation claims can follow. Defending these claims can be expensive, disruptive and lead to higher insurance premiums the following year, so it is vital to both reduce the risk of accidents or illnesses at work and ensure you can defend claims robustly.

This is known as ‘claims defensibility’, and the right processes can help soften the impact if the worst should happen. They should include:

1. A rigorous system of risk control – from risk management to training – designed to prevent accidents from happening in the first place.

2. A clear process for gathering the evidence required to investigate incidents and defend health and safety claims.

COMMON INCIDENTS AND CLAIMS

According to the HSE, common causes of health and safety-related incidents include:

• Slips, trips or falls.

• Handling, lifting or carrying.

• An employee being struck by a moving object.

• Acts of violence.

• Falls from height.

HOW TO BUILD A ROBUST CLAIMS DEFENSIBILITY POSITION

Risk Control

Prevention is the crucial foundation for a robust claims defensibility position, and a legal requirement under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Every business will face its own set of health and safety risks, and should design its own tailored programme of injury prevention controls, but some common steps include:

• Identify hazards - Perform a detailed risk assessment to identify hazards that could cause a workplace injury.

• Identify who could be harmed and how - For each hazard, think about which employees might be affected, when and how.

• Evaluate and control risk - Consider the likelihood that someone will be harmed, any steps you are already taking to control the risk, and whether further action is needed.

• Implement and record - Keep a record of your risk assessments and steps you’ve taken to control risk.

• Review your risk controls regularly – Review and update your risk assessment and control measures periodically to ensure that any new hazards are identified and controlled, and any issues spotted by employees are investigated.

Incident response and management

The other major element of claims defensibility is your immediate response to an incident. Here, acting quickly to support the injured employee and gather a detailed body of evidence is crucially important.

• Draw a quick sketch of the area where the incident occurred –showing the layout, location of machinery, and equipment, and where the incident occurred.

• Take photographs from different angles - they should include the site of the incident and the surrounding area. Record where you took the photos and why you chose those angles.

• Gather documentary evidence – including what the injured person was doing and how, any risk assessments or training the individual has been provided with, as well as how and when you undertake inspections in that area.

• Take witness statements as soon as possible and record the facts accurately – start with the injured person, asking how they got injured, along with the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘when’ and ‘why’. You should also gather signed statements from witnesses, even those who didn’t see anything.

• Capture CCTV – gather footage that runs from 5-10 minutes before the incident through to 5-10 minutes afterwards.

All these steps, properly recorded and regularly reviewed, will help you to reduce the risk that an incident will occur and put you in a strong position to defend any claims against you if the worst should happen. What’s more, they could help you to manage insurance premiums by demonstrating to insurers that you are effectively managing risk.

ENABLING SUSTAINABILITY WITH TECHNOLOGY

Sustainability has become a priority for businesses of all shapes and sizes and is being implemented in many business strategies. When you make choices with sustainability in mind you help ensure that your business operates more efficiently, more productively and with less impact on the environment.

However, organisations often don’t know where to start. ITEC, a Xerox Business Solutions company, is committed to helping enable organisations to reach their sustainability goals by using the right technology.

There are several key areas in every organisation where more sustainable practices can be brought into the workplace. It is vital that businesses leverage the right technology and find the right technology partner to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Some of the key areas include paper, energy, waste and recycling. These factors affect every business to varying degrees, but all businesses can benefit from implementing new ways of working in these areas.

Every organisation relies on paper-based processes to some degree, but with the right technology you can significantly reduce your paper consumption and waste.

This may include a document management system that can digitally store, share, track and manage files and documents, digital sign in processes to remove the need for paper sign in, digital mail, both inbound and outbound, or

digital accounts payable. Not only can these solutions help businesses reduce their impact on the environment, but they also support hybrid and remote working models.

Significant amounts of paper are wasted in the average workplace. Unnecessary or uncollected prints contribute to a large portion of that paper waste. To help reduce waste in your organisation, change the settings on your printer driver to enable double-sided printing and deselect the cover sheet option to avoid printing a sheet unnecessarily. Utilising print software that only releases prints when a user enters a PIN to claim them can also help to prevent forgotten prints from piling up at the device and reduce paper waste.

Printing on recycled paper and using paper that complies with sustainable forest management standards, including Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) can help your organisation become more sustainable by reducing the greenhouse gas impact of your printing and helping preserve biodiversity.

This brings us to recycling, make sure you recycle everything from kitchen waste to paper. But beyond these, as part of our Managed Print Service you can return your spent toner cartridges for reuse/recycling, which diverts them from entering landfills each year and reduces the demand for raw materials.

In addition, devices can also be recycled. Devices at the end of their life can be remanufactured, refurbished, recycled, and broken down to reuse parts to support waste-reduction initiatives. When you implement changes such as these you can make a big impact on the sustainability of your organisation.

Energy consumption from unnecessary prints, devices not powering down and high energy-consuming printers and copiers can soon add up and could be increasing your organisation’s impact on the environment. When it is time to upgrade your print devices consider looking for ones that bear the EPA ENERGY STAR® and EPEAT labels. These ecolabels demonstrate that products meet a variety of environmental performance criteria that address energy conservation as well as materials selection, supply chain greenhouse gas emissions reduction, design for circularity and product longevity, and end-of-life management.

To help you get started in your sustainability journey, together with Xerox, ITEC has identified the elements and steps your business needs to take when starting your journey to net zero and developing a roadmap. HOW THE RISE OF DISTANCE LEARNING HAS CHANGED THE EDUCATION LANDSCAPE

BY MLA COLLEGE, PROVIDERS OF INNOVATIVE DISTANCE E-LEARNING COURSES FOR THE GLOBAL MARINE INDUSTRY

As autumn 2023 approaches we are still seeing radical societal transformations from the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the field of education is no exception. As the traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms were forced to close their doors, distance and online learning emerged as a vital solution to ensure continuity of education. This unprecedented situation prompted businesses and educational institutions worldwide to adapt quickly and develop online learning mechanisms in order to mitigate the effects of education disruption and school closures.

The world was shut down; businesses were thrown into a situation where staff were required to work from home, high street and independent shops were forced to close and schools were put under pressure to prepare and deliver their learning off-site.

Established distance learning providers were experiencing a growth in their enrolments with individuals having the time to pursue personal development.

The growth of distance learning not only addresses the immediate challenges but also opens up new opportunities to bridge the global skills gap. By harnessing the power of digital innovation, distance learning has proven its potential to complement, enrich, and transform education, making progress towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) making education more attainable. Moreover, distance learning has the ability to revolutionise the provision of universal access to learning, enhancing its quality and relevance, strengthening inclusion, and improving education administration and governance.

However, as the sector witnesses exponential growth and sees an influx of companies producing online or distance learning products, it is crucial to scrutinise the quality of these offerings. While the

majority of providers adhere to stringent regulations and guidelines to ensure a highquality learning experience, there are some unregulated entities that may not meet the desired standards. It is essential for learners, educators, and policymakers to exercise caution and conduct thorough research before engaging with any distance learning provider to ensure optimal educational outcomes.

In addition to formal education, businesses are also recognising the benefits of distance learning for training their workforce and supporting personal development. Distance learning offers a cost-effective solution that allows businesses to provide on-demand access to relevant learning materials. This flexibility enables employees to engage in professional development without incurring excessive costs or compromising their work schedules. Furthermore, the asynchronous nature of distance learning allows learners to access content at their own pace, catering to individual learning preferences and needs.

This also brings with it the need for rethink traditional educational models. With the convergence of technology and education, educational institutions are exploring innovative approaches to deliver content and engage learners. Online platforms offer interactive and multimedia-rich learning experiences, stimulating active participation and knowledge retention. This shift encourages educators to adopt learnercentric approaches, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.

The benefits of increased accessibility, flexibility, and innovation are undeniable. However, it is crucial to maintain high-quality standards and address the digital divide to ensure that no learner is left behind. By harnessing the power of technology, distance learning has the potential to reshape the education landscape, revolutionise traditional deliveries, and empower learners of all ages and backgrounds.

BABCOCK AWARDED INITIAL CONTRACT FOR SECOND NUCLEAR SUBMARINE REFIT

Babcock, the international defence company, and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) have signed an initial contract for the multi-year refit of the second of the UK’s Vanguard Class nuclear submarines, HMS Victorious.

The initial full cost recovery agreement, which will be replaced with a contract on the same terms for the full programme before the end of the year, enables Babcock to begin deep maintenance of the complex submarine at its facility at Devonport.

HMS Victorious plays a vital role in the UK’s continuous at sea deterrent. Her refit programme will support around 1000 jobs in the local community and will see Babcock continue to build its workforce for delivering future submarine maintenance at Devonport.

Babcock’s CEO Nuclear Dominic Kieran said “This is the result of a truly collaborative effort with the SDA. The work we do to support the Vanguard Class fleet, a vital part of the UK’s defence, has never been more important.

“The commercial framework we have agreed will ensure the retention of our skilled workforce, support future recruitment and enable us to focus on supporting the SDA in its drive to increase submarine availability.”

SDA CEO Chris Gardner said “The completion of HMS VICTORIOUS’s Deep Maintenance Period is vital to supporting Defence’s highest priority. We look forward to working with Babcock to deliver the project on time to enable ongoing submarine availability and to continue to transform Devonport Naval Base into a Centre of Excellence for submarine deep maintenance.”

Submarine support is critical to the defence of the UK and requires specialist engineering skills and dedicated infrastructure. Babcock, the SDA and the Royal Navy are currently in discussions with the intention of finalising a long-term strategic partnership to ensure the stable, safe, effective and efficient delivery of deep and base maintenance of submarines. Expected to replace current commercial

arrangements under the Future Maritime Support Programme, this would place Babcock on a similar footing to other key industrial partners, as part of a wider defence nuclear enterprise.

FINDING, AND KEEPING, TALENT

The South

tech industry is developing fast, with Exeter and East Devon becoming a natural home to innovative firms looking for a good work-life balance. Westcotts Partner Patrick Tigwell says this influx of talent is great for the region – but we need to hold on to it…

Imagine working hard all day before heading off for a quick surf or a sea swim or a walk along the river to blow the cobwebs away? For many people living and working in Devon, this is the reality of being in such a special part of the world. The work-life balance is the reason many of us have chosen to be here and it’s why the tech sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the area. Why wouldn’t you want to set up in this location? Many start-up tech firms and larger companies have decided to base themselves in Exeter and the surrounding areas to leverage the advantages of a region that is, quite simply, a fantastic place to be. So, what’s the catch? It’s the same with most industries - finding and keeping a skilled workforce.

Expanding the talent pool

If you’re a new tech business setting up in Exeter, you need three main things. The first is commercial property and we’ve got plenty of that. You also need decent transport links, which we also have (but more on that later). Thirdly, and most importantly, however, you need a skilled and motivated workforce.

Now, I know from my links with the Devon Chamber of Commerce that recruitment is a key issue for many companies at the moment. Finding and then holding onto the right people is a struggle and that’s true for tech firms, too. We’re not London and the South East. We just don’t have that critical mass of people, a deep pool full of talent that we can constantly draw from.

Yes, we have lots of incredible assets down here, including a university with an impressive national and international reputation, an Ofsted outstanding college and plenty of entrepreneurial spirit. But there’s often a gap in the market. You get people who have come down here to go to university but then leave at the end of their degree. They might then come back down in later life when they decide they want to raise a family in the Westcountry but until then, we’re left with a hiatus. Tapping into talent

early on and encouraging young people to stay has always been an issue. It’s one that’s definitely being addressed through the rapid expansion of Exeter Science Park and schemes such as development of the new 19 acre Power Park site, part of the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone . These are certainly encouraging signs that our talent pool is growing. Building on these valuable schemes is a must but so is overcoming some of the other challenges we face.

Transport links

People forget just how big our region is. If you’re in the Midlands, you can get between Nottingham, Coventry and Birmingham fairly easily. Down here, it can be more difficult because distances are so high, especially if you don’t drive. And then there’s the issue of congestion, particularly in Exeter where it can take a considerable amount of time to reach the city centre. Tackling congestion and improving our railway network are two major ways we can make our region work better for the new businesses that choose to settle here.

Recent projects – such as the reopening of the Dartmoor Line between Exeter and Okehampton and the new station at Marsh Barton - are key in helping to bring more people and skills into the city.

Making the most of local knowledge

At Westcotts Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, we build relationships with a broad range of businesses and are truly in tune with the issues they face. We know our region well and how our clients – whether they’re tech start-ups or longstanding agricultural firms – can adapt and survive with the changing landscape. These are rapidly evolving times for many industries but, fundamentally, Exeter and East Devon are fantastic places to live, work, do business and invest. Let’s collaborate to keep the momentum going.

OUR GREEN JOURNEY – A PROFESSIONAL SERVICES VIEWPOINT

David Wallis, Managing Partner at GA Solicitors, describes his firm’s commitment to going green and reducing its carbon footprint.

Around 18 months ago GA Solicitors made a real commitment to go green and do our bit to protect our planet and reduce our carbon footprint. For some businesses, such as manufacturing, there appears to be a straightforward path to become more environmentally friendly. A change of materials, reducing and reusing waste, introducing alternative energy methods…. For us, working in the professional services industry, in a leased building, made us wonder how much difference we could make.

As we started our journey, we found that the answer was – a lot! Although daunting at first, excitement grew and more and more staff chose to get involved, not only helping the environment, but also encouraging team spirit and uniting our team members from across the firm.

We therefore wanted to share our journey in the hope it would inspire other businesses who, just like we were, may be daunted at the prospect of making changes to their organisations and not appreciate how their efforts can make a difference. With 5.5m SMEs in the UK, if we all play our part the impact will be significant.

Carbon Reduction Committee and Forum: A committee was formed in 2022 which meets every other month to discuss new ideas

and ways to reduce our carbon footprint. At least twice per annum, we open this up as a forum, allowing all members of staff to join us and become involved in discussions and put forward their own ideas.

We also have an online suggestion scheme with any staff member receiving a financial bonus if any of their energy saving ideas are put into practice.

Ecologi:

Most recently we signed up to Ecologi. This third-party plants trees all around the world on our behalf. For every client feedback form or online review we receive, we plant a tree. We have so far planted more than 1200 trees worldwide.

In the office:

• Zip taps have been fitted to reduce water wastage and energy needed to heat water which is not used

• Use of water coolers has been greatly restricted, with only recyclable, paper cups provided

• Installation of energy-efficient, sensordriven lighting with energy-efficient light bulbs

• Transitioning to a more paperless office, we have greatly reduced the number of files stored and printing needed

• All possible paper products are recycled. Even confidential waste is taken away and recycled securely

• Individual waste bins have been removed, with recycling bins placed all around the office

• We ceased printing business cards, instead we use an online, phone application, saving the printing of hundreds of business cards each year

• When choosing any new suppliers or promotional materials we ensure they are as sustainable as possible

Staff incentives:

• We introduced CSR days which give employees paid leave to take part in things such as beach cleans and community events

• We also introduced a salary sacrifice ‘cycle to work’ scheme, encouraging people to leave their cars at home

Encouraging a culture of sustainability and sustainable decision-making, through awareness-raising events, information on our intranet system and accessibility to staff and their ideas

Plymouth Plastic Free Directory

We are listed on the Plymouth Plastic Free directory. The directory is part of the Plymouth Plan for Plastics – the Plymouth City Council initiative that drives the Plastic Free Plymouth mission.

Next steps

We have been working closely with SWMAS and they have been able to assess our carbon footprint. Fantastically, due to our efforts, the firm was detailed as being lower than average and in the top 10% of organisations it has worked with. There is however still room for improvement, and we are continuing our relationship with SWMAS with a view to halve our carbon footprint by 2030 and sign the Race to Zero pledge, taking our commitment to the next level.

Our journey will be a long one as we make more changes and look to offset our carbon usage. However, we already know that our efforts have made a difference. We also know that having this focused commitment has brought our team together with one common goal.

So, if you run a business and are thinking about whether you want to go green, hopefully our story inspires you to take those steps and achieve goals you never knew you could.

“By harnessing the power of the sun, we are reducing our carbon footprint and making a positive impact on the planet.”

China Fleet Country Club worked closely with ZLC Energy, a leading solar energy solutions provider, to design and install the solar PV system. The collaboration ensured

In addition to the environmental benefits, the solar PV installation is expected to result in long-term cost savings for China Fleet Country Club. By generating clean energy onsite, the club will reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources and mitigate the impact of rising energy costs. This proactive step will contribute to the financial sustainability of the club while promoting the use of renewable energy.

China Fleet Country Club’s solar PV installation represents a significant leap forward in its sustainability journey. As the club embraces solar power, it not only enhances its operations but also encourages its members, visitors, and the local community to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

The initiative serves as a reminder that individual actions can collectively make a substantial difference in the fight against climate change.

STRENGTHEN YOUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WITH HEARTS TOGETHER

In today’s business landscape, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental, social and governance rating (ESG) have become more than just buzzwords; having a strong CSR strategy is a crucial aspect of a company’s identity, with those committing to CSR achieving their ESG goals and attracting the right type of investors and employees.

It is widely accepted that organisations who actively engage in supporting charitable causes as a part of their CSR commitments, not only bolster their reputation but also contribute to the betterment of society.

In a survey conducted by Forbes in May 2013, over 89% of respondents reported that their employees were happier due to their CSR activities, with 76% stating that they not only retained better-engaged employees but attracted higher quality talent in the market. There is also a drive from employees for a community-based outlook, with a report by QualtricsXM in 2020 identifying that 68% of employees think their employers should be investing in charity initiatives.

A partnership with Hearts Together would not only help your business by visibly strengthening your company’s commitment to

social responsibility, it would support families across Devon and Cornwall, demonstrating a genuine desire to make a positive difference in your local community.

Hearts Together enables families and loved ones to stay close together during difficult times in our Hospital Hotel, a home away from home. We provide support, care and compassion, when people need us most. Over time, we have seen the demand for our services increase and the number of families we are unable to accommodate is on the rise which simply cannot continue. This year alone we have turned away over 400 families and we are committed to doing all we can to ensure that going forward every family requiring support will have a place to stay.

We have embarked on an ambitious rebuild development project, but it is only with the help and support from local businesses and organisations like yourselves, that we will be able to deliver this project and ensure we can help everyone who needs us.

So, whether you are looking to support a charity of the year, encourage employees to volunteer or provide a route for your customers to support causes that align with your values, Hearts Together can help to make

Congratulations to Penny Hannah, Head of Fundraising, on another unforgettable event, together with sponsors Michael Spiers Jewellers and Marchand Petit, supporters PL1 Events Limited and One Plymouth, and Sir Fix-a-lock Ltd who sponsored the signs on the route.

EXHIBITING IN NORTH AND SOUTH DEVON TO PROMOTE BUSINESS CONNECTIONS

journalist, it was clear to me that there are so many businesses whose achievements need to be heard and celebrated, especially in tough times when enthusiasm can falter,” says Robert.

This led to the creation of Business Action, a print and online magazine distributed direct to 2,000 businesses in North Devon town centres and on business estates and by mail. Now in its fifth year, Business Action’s achievements include its annual North Devon Business Awards and BBxpo business-to-business exhibition, this year being held in Bideford on Thursday 26 October.

“We aim to provide media access to any business in the area, regardless of size, age or sector, and to promote connectivity between businesses in North Devon and across the county.

A resilient business community is vital for everyone in Devon and membership of Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce helps to support and maintain this. This is what drives Robert Zarywacz, who applies his experience and expertise gained from running his Zarywacz communications partnership for 29 years to publish a North Devon business magazine and organise the area’s largest annual business-to-business exhibition.

“Having interviewed thousands of businesses as a commercial copywriter and

“Attending chamber events at different locations has been very beneficial this year and I was honoured to be a finalist in both the chamber’s Digital Business of the Year Award and The Steve Whiteway Award, enjoying the brilliant awards ceremony in May.

“Business Action is delighted to be exhibiting at Devon Business Show on 11 October, a valuable event which I attended as a visitor in 2022, and I am looking forward to connecting with more chamber members there this year.

“I’d also like to invite chamber members to exhibit at or register for free visitor entry to

BBxpo on 26 October. As well as the exhibition and talks, both exhibitors and visitors can network over a free lunch provided by North Devon Hog Roast and it promises to be a great event.”

CHAMBER PEOPLE

Name: Michelle Clark, Finance Manager at Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce

Role: Membership Executive at Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce

Where do you see the future of your organisation?

Devon & Plymouth Chamber Of Commerce is growing and continuing to support their members with various events, training courses and advice.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

her parents have a good work ethic but that we also know when the work day stops. Technology and working from home means this takes a little more effort than it did a few years ago.

What’s your favourite quote?

Not a quote but song lyrics…

What do you do and why do you enjoy it?

I am the Finance Manager at The Chamber and for as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed maths and problem solving. Working in finance has always been the place for me and even after 20 years, I still enjoy what I do. I also love a good complicated spreadsheet. What inspires you?

Travelling. I have always loved researching and exploring new places and now that our daughter is a teenager, I’m excited to see that she shares my love of travel too and is enjoying our adventures. What drives you?

The desire to always do better for myself and those around me

Don’t sweat the small stuff

If you could sum up your CV in one word, it would be..?

Consistent

When it comes to business, do you follow head or heart?

Most definitely both. They are equally important when making decisions. Describe yourself in five words

Dedicated, determined, kind, organised and adventurous

How do you balance life and work?

By having boundaries to try and ensure my work doesn’t creep into my home life. I value my family time a lot and do my best to keep work within my work day. I also think it’s important that our daughter grows up seeing

‘It’s my life, it’s now or never, I ain’t gonna live forever, I just want to live while I’m alive’ by the amazing Bon Jovi. This song was released just after I finished my A-levels and I was debating further education or travelling. This song was played non-stop and it made me book a flight to Auckland!

Who has been the greatest influence on you?

My daughter Emmie. At pre-school she was described as having an amazing zest for life and to this day, she is still the same. She has the biggest heart and energy to match which I just love about her.

What are you most proud of?

The lovely family I have around me. My husband, daughter and I are the best team and we live and love life every day.
