CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH MARKS LONG-STANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH

Plymouth’s two largest education providers - and two of our proud Devon Chamber Patrons - City College Plymouth and the University of Plymouth, are celebrating a long-standing partnership.

The new era for the relationship represents a mutual strategic commitment to the people of Plymouth and the surrounding area, with a clear focus on their respective work with industry and employers, alongside their civic engagement. At the heart of the collaboration is the drive to support the local economy through education and skills development.

The collaboration aims to meet the needs of local employers, ensuring that students are equipped with relevant skills for the job market.

By working together, City College Plymouth and the University of Plymouth will continue to focus on raising aspirations and improving attainment in schools, and expanding access to higher education, providing more opportunities for the people of Plymouth.

Knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and access to new funding opportunities will also be facilitated as part of the partnership.

Jackie Grubb, Chief Executive of City College Plymouth, said: “The College’s partnership with the University of Plymouth began with just eight higher education students in 1991.

“It has since grown to support thousands of degree-level students annually and nearly 18,000 degree-level qualifications have been awarded through our collaboration.

“As a College, we are committed to expanding access to higher education and providing more opportunities for students in Plymouth. We’re delighted to continue working alongside the University to support the needs of our community and ensure a prosperous future for our city, together.”

Professor Judith Petts DBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Plymouth, expressed her enthusiasm for the strengthened partnership: “Whilst the University works with many

academic partners, our relationship with City College Plymouth has always been among the most important.

“We are close neighbours in every sense, with shared values and a deep commitment to the people of Plymouth and the surrounding area. I am delighted to have signed this MOU that strengthens and extends our collaboration as two of the city’s key institutions, with a mutual strategic commitment to industry, employers and civic engagement through our employees, learners, and communities.”

This collaboration aims to create a thriving educational ecosystem that benefits both current and future generations, ensuring that the community of Plymouth can flourish and adapt to the evolving landscape of both education and employment.

Plymouth enjoys financial boost as cruise bookings double

Plymouth’s growing cruise business has seen bookings double, bringing in an extra £1.5 million spend to the city this year.

That’s the figure gathered from the thousands of passengers and crew from the flotilla of ships visiting Britain’s Ocean City.

Industry data claims that on average each cruise visitor spends around £90, however, Plymouth and the surrounding economy also benefit further financially from additional income including port and pilotage fees and the spin-off spend associated with excursions.

Amanda Lumley, Destination Plymouth Chief Executive, commented: “This is a fantastic boost to the local economy and it is growing by the year. We’re delighted to see so many passengers and crew enjoying our city and spending on everything from visiting the attractions and taking tours, to the gift shops and other retail outlets, cafes and restaurants.”

Post-pandemic the city welcomed seven cruise ship visits in 2022 and this year bookings doubled to 14, equating to a potential 10,500 passengers and more than 5000 crew.

The ships range from smaller vessels with

a capacity of fewer than 300 passengers to those carrying upwards of 1500.

Plymouth’s Cruise partnership of AB Ports, Cattewater Harbour, the City Centre and Waterfront Business Improvement districts and the City council along with a brilliant team of volunteer cruise Ambassadors all work together to attract and create a world class welcome experience to the city for all the visiting cruise guests.

Glen Gardner, Cruise New Business Development Manager at Destination Plymouth, said: “There are cruise ships from German, British, American and French cruise operators with brands representing the premium, luxury, and expedition markets.

“Ten of these cruise ships are first time visitors to Plymouth and, during such inaugural visits, it’s a long maritime tradition to exchange plaques between the Master of the vessel and the Port’s Harbour Master or local representative, so a plentiful supply of plaques is needed for this year.”

One of the businesses to benefit from the visits is Plymouth Gin which provides samples to tourists during the welcome celebrations.

The company’s Brand Home Manager, Harriet Dailey, said: “The growth in the number of cruise visits Plymouth is receiving has had a positive effect on our business and the city as a whole.

“There is always a really nice buzz in the air on the days a ship is in. We have such a lovely city with great things to offer and I think arriving at The Barbican, with the mixture of shops and restaurants, is a fantastic first impression. We often give out samples of our products to welcome the guests as they arrive and benefit from them visiting for tours and to buy souvenirs.”

Next year looks just as busy with ten vessels already confirmed and a further four pending.

Progress report shows significant strides forward in building region’s future workforce

A report published in September revealed that our Devon and Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) is on track to deliver 20 key actions to boost future workforce skills.

Since 2023, we have been working on this Plan with more than 700 employers and the region’s colleges, universities and education providers to implement better ways of making sure employees are better equipped for the future of work.

Jointly led by the Devon Chamber of Commerce and Somerset Chamber of Commerce, the Government-backed LSIP is expected to unlock the potential of both counties, providing businesses and organisations with the critical skills they need to thrive, while enhancing what Higher Technical Qualifications offer.

Ronnie Carter, LSIP Executive and Projects Manager, said: “The publication of this Progress Report marks a significant milestone in our journey towards enhancing the skills landscape in Devon and Somerset.

“Through close collaboration with employers and key education providers, we are laying the groundwork for a workforce that is not only skilled but also adaptable to the demands of

the future.

“This report reflects our commitment to delivering impactful change, and we invite businesses to engage with us as we continue to build a stronger, more resilient economy for our region.”

David Crew, Managing Director of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, said: “Our daily conversations with businesses indicate that skills and accessing talent to grow remains a key issue for many Somerset businesses.

“The LSIP in Somerset has seen key stakeholders, including skills training providers and further education colleges, work collaboratively with businesses to address the LSIP priorities together, through an employer-led approach.

“The LSIP will lay the foundations for Somerset to have the high-quality skills provision which responds to the needs of businesses, which will be vital for businesses in our region to thrive. I would like to thank all LSIP partners for their efforts, and look forward to seeing further developments as

Plymouth’s unique appeal as a cruise destination is confirmed by Silversea Cruises’ Manager of Destination Experiences, Susanna Carpaccio, who said: “The city is really well received with its distillery, museums, local shops and tours in the countryside and maritime history. The majority of passengers – 70% – are Americans interested in the Mayflower connection. Plymouth is a beautiful location.”

this critical work continues.”

Minister for Skills Rt Hon Baroness Smith added: “I welcome the publication of the Local Skills Improvement Plan Progress Report for Heart of the South West. These reports set out progress made on meeting the skills needs of local employers.

“As well as being a valuable source of information for local skills deliverers, employers and stakeholders, the reports along with the LSIPs themselves, will provide important intelligence for the newly established Skills England.”

LOCAL SUPPLIERS GIVEN NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK WITH PLYMOUTH’S BIGGEST ORGANISATIONS

More than £3.4 billion worth of business opportunities are already available on Plymouth’s newest and largest platform for accessing tenders, procurement opportunities and finding local suppliers.

Find It In Plymouth (finditinplymouth.co.uk) has officially launched, giving businesses the chance to receive regular opportunities and supply their goods and services to some of the city’s biggest organisations.

More than 100 opportunities have already been posted, with a total value of £3.44 billion.

Hundreds of businesses have already registered on the platform and started accessing local opportunities - and there’s an open invitation to the rest of the city’s

enterprises to get started for free on the new platform.

They’ll also be able to advertise their own opportunities and find suppliers easily.

It’s free to sign up to Find It In Plymouth, a partnership between Devon Chamber of Commerce, Babcock and Plymouth City Council to support the supply chain and encourage spending in the local economy by larger organisations.

The aim is to bring buyers and suppliers together to boost the local economy, secure jobs and support our region's carbon reduction goals.

The new platform is simple to register for and supported by some of the city’s biggest

names. It is an extension of the collaboration between partners that has included the successful series of Meet the Buyer events hosted by the Devon Chamber with Babcock and SMS Group, where the city’s supply chain get the chance to meet some of the biggest names in the city. The Chamber has also led on the series of Pitch and Procure events, where SMEs get the chance to ‘pitch’ their services and products to some of the region’s largest organisations.

Chamber CEO Stuart Elford said: “The Find It In Plymouth platform is a tremendous step for local procurement. For many years we have been trying - with success - to find ways of bringing buyers and suppliers closer together.

“Our regular Meet the Buyer events have done an awful lot to achieve this but this new platform will transform the way that buyers and suppliers communicate with each other quickly and easily - meaning better, more efficient business that takes place locally.”

DEVON & PLYMOUTH CHAMBER AND EXETER CHAMBER UNITE

TO CREATE NEW UMBRELLA BUSINESS ORGANISATION

The Devon & Plymouth Chamber and Exeter Chamber have merged to create a powerful new voice for businesses across Devon.

This newly formed Devon Chamber unites two major business organisations, offering enhanced support and resources for all businesses across Devon, and increased access to networks and services for existing Chamber members. Members in Exeter and Plymouth will continue to benefit from local support through their respective boards.

As part of the merger, members will automatically gain access to a wider range of resources from both Chambers. This includes participation in over 100 annual networking events, a stronger platform for business promotion, and additional support services through the British Chambers of Commerce.

Exeter and Plymouth Chambers will retain their distinct identities and member offerings within their respective regions. However, all members will now have access to

“This is a landmark moment for the Devon business community. By combining the strengths of Exeter and Plymouth Chambers, we’re forming a dynamic, collaborative organisation that will amplify the voice of businesses across the region.”

benefits at the county level and through the British Chambers of Commerce, an especially valuable addition for Exeter Chamber members.

Richard Stevens who will remain Chair of Plymouth Chamber, has been appointed Chair of the newly created Devon Chamber. Richard said: “This is a landmark moment for the Devon business community. By combining the strengths of Exeter and Plymouth Chambers, we’re forming a dynamic, collaborative organisation that will amplify the voice of businesses across the region. Crucially, this isn’t just about Exeter and Plymouth—our mission is to build a Chamber that serves all businesses in Devon, from the cities to smaller towns and rural areas. We’re dedicated to

ensuring that every business, no matter where it’s located, has a voice at local, regional, and national levels.”

Steve Gates, the current Chair of Exeter Chamber and now Vice-Chair of the new Devon Chamber, said: “The merger gives Exeter Chamber strength from unity with Devon and Plymouth Chamber but also increased capacity to focus on Exeter issues for the city’s business community. The Exeter Chamber team and board will continue to represent businesses and facilitate business success by providing opportunities to connect, gain insight and grow.“

The new structure will take effect from 1 October 2024.

MAKING IT PERSONAL With Optimising IT

Optimising IT is one of the fastest expanding IT infrastructure and cybersecurity firms in the South West. With a rock-solid ethos based on ethical working and personal connection (it’s already a B-Corp); this progressive company which started life in a living room has grown rapidly in its 10 years. We caught up with MD Todd Gifford to discover just how they did it.

supply matters hugely in business and working with other B-Corps is a key part of our recent success and growth.

Why expand into the South West?

The potential here in the South West is

alone. To us, these are all markers of a thriving, diverse business community.

Tell us what’s special about the region and its business community?

“IN OTHER, OFTEN BIGGER, CITIES WE FOUND BUSINESSES CONNECT ONLY WITHIN THEIR OWN SECTORS; IN EXETER WE FIND THAT EVERYONE IS TALKING TO EACH OTHER”

Take us back, how did Optimising IT start?

The business started in April 2013 in founder Gary Smith’s living room delivering a 5-year IT infrastructure project for the company’s, then, only client. I joined the business, as its 7th employee in 2015. Today we employ 33 people with offices in Gloucestershire, Bristol and Exeter. Ours is a business based on trust, simplicity and respect with an aim to raise the standard of IT and cybersecurity for businesses.

We’ve been hearing a lot about B Corps recently, what made you become one?

We became a certified B Corp in February 2023. It was both the right thing to do and of course makes business sense. We are increasingly finding that ethical sourcing and

huge. There is a fantastic amount of inward investment in Exeter, new and start-up businesses are thriving here, and the city is predicted to become one of the UK’s fastest growing economies. One of the primary reasons we set up an Exeter office in February 2023 is because we recognised the sheer number of value-aligned businesses in the area; businesses that are similarly minded to us, that we want to work with.

We also choose to do business with other B-Corps, we work well with them and know they have been through the same quality processes we have. There are over 2000 B-Corps in the UK, with the South West, in particular Devon and Cornwall, having a high number. There are more than 70 B-Corps in Exeter

Exeter Chamber has played a big role in Optimising IT’s growth and success. The range of events the Chamber hosts, the fantastic business community that network in it, the social media presence – everything about the organisation meant that we wanted to be part of it. Being a Growth Partner has given us tangible benefits and opportunities we wouldn’t otherwise have. The Exeter business community is really positive and

inclusive. In other, often bigger, cities we found businesses connect only within their own sectors; in Exeter we find that everyone is talking to each other and clearly benefitting from those networks. We’ve taken a longterm commitment to supporting Exeter City Football Club until 2029. Putting down roots and being part of a club which is owned by the fans for the fans is absolutely where we are as a business. At grass-roots level, we’ve also just signed up to support Clyst Valley Football Club, whose grounds are next to our new offices in Winslade.

and structures are set up in the right way to maximise the efficiencies of AI and use it to transform processes and reduce overheads. What’s next?

“THERE ARE MORE THAN 70 B-CORPS IN EXETER ALONE. TO US, THESE ARE ALL MARKERS OF A THRIVING, DIVERSE BUSINESS COMMUNITY.”

What are your customers main concerns in 2024?

AI is the real focus currently. There’s a lot of hype in the media about AI but it’s so new, very few have experience delivering it in a way that adds tangible business value. The team at Optimising IT has been working with and building our own AI capability over the last two years, pushing the edges of it to really understand its capabilities and how it can benefit businesses. We are now working with our clients to ensure their business data

We moved to our new offices at Winslade Park in August this year – giving us a lot more space to work and grow. We have strengthened our management team with 3 new appointments and, because of the breadth of expertise and dedication within our existing team, have been able to make well deserved promotions to senior leadership roles for exceptional colleagues. We have grown by 30% this financial year, our ambition is to keep growing at that rate and make Exeter our business hub.

PROMOTION FOR EMMA MALLET

With a new role as Regional Sales Manager, Emma is clear about her mission, and passionate about helping South West SMEs achieve their growth ambitions. She said: “My new role is all about working with aligned businesses to understand their goals and find a way that technology can help them achieve them. At Optimising IT we aren’t just transactional, we really care about helping other businesses grow and succeed and know that we can make a difference – both technically and personally. Genuinely solving problems and building relationships with honesty and trust is what makes me proud to be part of Optimising IT.”

Having joined the firm one year ago, Emma was originally introduced to Todd at Exeter Chamber’s Summer Bash. Since then, she has played a pivotal role in the Chamber, as part of the EXIST steering group and as a founding member of NextGen. She’s passionate about helping young people benefit from the Chamber events and networks to make the most of their careers here in Devon.

THE IMPACT OF AI ON BUSINESS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionised how industries work across the globe, and East Devon is no exception.

As businesses in this picturesque region strive to remain competitive, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance operations, improve customer experience, and drive innovation. Matt Melksham, Partner at Westcotts explores these multifaceted impacts of AI on businesses.

Enhancing operational efficiency

AI technology is transforming how businesses manage their operations. Automation of routine tasks is one of the primary benefits, allowing companies to streamline processes and reduce human error. For instance, local manufacturing firms are leveraging AI-driven robots for assembly line tasks, which not only speeds up production but also ensures higher precision and consistency.

Additionally, AI-powered data analytics tools are enabling businesses to make more informed decisions. By analysing large volumes of data, these tools provide insights into market trends, customer preferences, and operational bottlenecks. This allows businesses to optimise their supply chains, manage inventory more effectively, and anticipate market demands, thereby reducing costs and increasing profitability.

Revolutionising customer service

Customer service is another area where AI is making significant inroads. Many businesses are adopting AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to enhance customer interactions. These AI tools provide instant responses to customer inquiries, handle routine service requests, and offer personalized recommendations, thereby improving the

overall customer experience.

For example, local retailers are using AIdriven chatbots to manage online customer support, freeing up human staff to handle more complex issues. This not only improves response times but also ensures that customers receive accurate and consistent information. Furthermore, AI’s ability to analyse customer feedback and behaviour helps businesses to tailor their services to meet the specific needs of their clientele, fostering greater customer loyalty and satisfaction. Driving innovation and growth

AI can also act as a catalyst for innovation and economic growth in East Devon. Businesses are increasingly investing in AI technologies to develop new products and services, thus staying ahead of the competition. In the agricultural sector, for instance, AI-powered drones and sensors are being used to monitor crop health, optimize irrigation, and predict yields. This not only enhances productivity but also promotes sustainable farming practices.

Moreover, the adoption of AI is attracting new businesses and investments to the region. Tech startups specialising in AI solutions are setting up operations, drawn by the area’s supportive business environment and growing demand for advanced technologies. This influx of businesses is creating job opportunities and contributing to the local economy’s diversification and resilience.

Challenges and considerations

Despite its numerous benefits, the integration of AI into businesses is not without challenges. One of the primary concerns is the potential displacement of jobs due to automation. As AI takes over routine and repetitive tasks, there is a growing need for

the workforce to adapt and acquire new skills. To address this, local educational institutions and businesses are collaborating to offer training programs that equip employees with the necessary skills to thrive in an AI-driven landscape.

Data privacy and security are other critical considerations. The use of AI involves the collection and analysis of vast amounts of data, raising concerns about how this data is stored, used, and protected. Businesses must ensure they comply with data protection regulations and implement robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive information.

Conclusion

The impact of AI on businesses in East Devon is profound and far-reaching. From enhancing operational efficiency and revolutionising customer service to driving innovation and economic growth, AI is reshaping the business landscape. However, it is essential for businesses to navigate the challenges associated with AI adoption carefully. By embracing AI and addressing these challenges, businesses in can unlock new opportunities, foster sustainable growth, and maintain their competitive edge in an increasingly digital world.

Exeter City Council’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) is celebrating after receiving a National Lottery award from The National Lottery Community Fund for its ‘Museum Meet-Up’ project.

RAMM will use the money to run ‘Museum Meet-Up’, a programme for local people over 50 who are facing anxiety and loneliness.

In recent years, this community has been particularly affected by isolation as a result of complex factors including the Covid-19 pandemic and the skyrocketing cost of living. Although people have reported to RAMM that they would like to engage more with cultural opportunities, many lack the confidence to do so without support and encouragement.

This 14-month project seeks to improve wellbeing and independence through supported opportunities to engage with cultural activities. CHAMBER FOCUS: Exeter / East Devon and Digital & Tech

A bricks and clicks pizza business with sites across the South West has cut its operating costs and is on track to increased sales thanks to skills learned through the Help to Grow Management Course.

Pig and Olive was founded by husbandand-wife Simon Harris and Rachel Hicken after they purchased a £200 pizza oven on eBay in 2015. They had moved to Devon after spending more than a decade working in the hospitality industry across pubs and luxury hotels and were looking for a new challenge. That’s when they spotted a gap in the market for classic stone baked pizzas. The business offers authentic stone baked Neapolitan pizzas using local and sustainably sourced produce.

and growth.

The Help to Grow course is delivered by the University of Exeter Business School and gave Rachel the skills and knowledge she needed to implement a new, long-term growth strategy, that enabled her to streamline operations to reduce energy and waste costs. It also helped her to identify a clear mission and purpose for the business, which is to produce the best pizzas, scale the company and support the local community.

Despite high levels of demand over the past nine years, operating costs had continued to rise and profit margins had reduced from 40% to 12%. Simon and Rachel recognised the need for external support if the business was to remain profitable. Rachel enrolled on a 12-week Help to Grow: Management Course, which is designed to help business leaders and

As a result of the changes they’ve implemented, Pig and Olive has seen its profit margins rebound from 12% to 39%. Rachel has been able to focus on the business’ growth strategy and increase pizza sales by 48%. Last year, the team sold 19,406 pizzas and are on track to sell 40,000 pizzas this year, which would help the company to increase turnover by 50%.

Marketing Manager and Operations Manager Rachel Hicken, co-owner of Pig and Olive, said: “I have worked in the hospitality industry most of my life before my husband and I launched Pig and Olive. Despite being very confident about my knowledge of the industry, I had very little understanding of operating

and growing a business. While the business is loved by many across Devon, to keep the momentum up and cover our overheads we needed to put plans and processes in place that would sustain growth over a long period of time. The Help to Grow: Management Course has been pivotal in our efforts to evolve the way we operate and change the way we approach growth.

This is a great example of the invaluable support that the Help to Grow: Management Course is giving to small business leaders.

Help to Grow: Management is a 12-week course designed to support business leaders and senior managers. Delivered by Small Business Charter and 90% government funded. It is designed to fit around existing work and personal commitments, providing business leaders with more than 50 hours of online and in person training including 10 hours of one-to-one mentoring. Places cost £750 per person for eligible business and the next cohort starts in January in Plymouth, with 5 sessions in-person and 7 sessions delivered online.

FREEPORT TAX BENEFITS EXTENSION A SIGNIFICANT BOOST FOR SOUTH WEST’S BLUE/GREEN ECONOMY

Plymouth and South Devon (PASD) Freeport is one of 12 Freeports in the UK that have been designed to boost economic growth, create jobs for their local communities and foster hotbeds of innovation.

PASD Freeport presents a unique proposition for investment, development and doing business in the South West with its three tax sites at South Yard, Langage and Sherford, as well as opportunities to develop customs sites within its outer boundary.

The English Freeport tax benefits extension window went into law late in May and the new government has confirmed it will be continuing with the UK Freeports programme. The benefits available now extend to September 2031 and beyond, giving eligible new and high-growth businesses more time to fully embrace the Freeport’s potential and capitalise on tax benefits and reliefs.

The tax reliefs available for eligible businesses are:

• enhanced structures and buildings allowances

• enhanced capital allowances for plant and machinery

• secondary Class 1 National Insurance contributions relief for eligible employers on the earnings of eligible new employees up to £25,000 per annum for up to 3 years

• Stamp Duty Land Tax relief

• Business Rates relief

Alongside the tax window extension, Plymouth and South Devon Freeport have also confirmed that, as well as marine, defence and space being target sectors, three additional sectors of advanced manufacturing, engineering and net zero technology are now also key areas of focus for the South West’s only Freeport.

Richard May, CEO of Plymouth and South Devon Freeport, says: “The tax relief window extension is fantastic news. This extended time frame provides businesses, investors, and developers with the confidence they need to

fully embrace the Freeport’s potential and drive economic growth across the region.

“Combined with additional sector focus to now also include advanced manufacturing, engineering and net zero tech, alongside our core sectors of marine, defence and space, we really are best placed to support new and growing businesses to achieve huge success not only domestically but internationally with competitive Freeport levers.”

Chamber members interested in learning more about the PASD Freeport and its benefits are invited to contact Eifion Jones, Business Growth and Investment Director via eifion. jones@pasdfreeport.com

CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH: THE PLACE TO GO FOR APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships have the potential to address the skills shortages we face as a city and a region.

As they continue to set the agenda for skills challenges across the South West, City College Plymouth has established itself as the place to turn to for Apprenticeships.

World-class facilities coupled with lecturers and assessors with the highest level of expertise means the College’s offer is unrivalled.

College teams have built strong relationships with employers locally and regionally, providing thousands of apprentices every year to businesses across a wide range of sectors. At a time when the South West is primed for growth, our Apprenticeships team works closely with employers to help them map out what their future workforce needs to look like and plan accordingly.

The College has invested heavily to be able to provide the best facilities in the region, and we are leading the way in digital skills development, including Artificial Intelligence. Our offer spans numerous sectors, including construction and building trades, engineering, business services, manufacturing, computing, customer service, hospitality and catering, health and social care, and hair and beauty.

As the largest provider of Apprenticeships in the city, both in terms of breadth and volume, our programme is overseen by Director of Apprenticeships, Jamie Rowley, with strategic direction from the Executive of Business Intelligence, Growth & Skills, Paul Fanshawe. Based in Plymouth, Paul is an educational specialist with over 20 years of experience at the College.

Paul said, “It’s clear why businesses trust us as the Learning Destination of Choice

for Apprenticeships. We supply top-quality apprentices who add value to businesses from day one, helping to reduce recruitment costs.”

Because of the scale and depth of the College as a provider of Apprenticeships, we are able to offer so much more than simply filling a specific role.

The benefits we bring include:

• working closely with employers to understand their needs now and in the future through training needs analysis

• supporting workforce planning to provide new, quality staff, upskill existing staff and aid staff retention

• vetting of potential candidates ensures that only the best and most suited get through

• remaining close to employers throughout the process to support and ease the administration burden

• supporting training and retraining to get the right people with the right skills at the right time.

Paul continued: “Our process ensures apprentices are pre-vetted so that only the best candidates for the job are presented to the employer, and we have fantastic staff who are not only assessors but lecturers too, which gives added value and reassurance to employers. We get under the skin of what employers need right now and in the years to come. We do that by immersing ourselves in understanding their plans for growth, and what’s needed to achieve that. Employers trust us because we’ve got them covered and are continually expanding the breadth and volume of our offer.”

The College’s approach has huge benefits for businesses, offering access to the best emerging talent in the city - quality individuals

who can quickly and efficiently add value to the company, reduce recruitment costs, and have a strong likelihood of staying with the business after their training. Additionally, this approach leads to improved productivity, higher staff retention rates, and enhanced loyalty and morale, making City College Plymouth the Apprenticeship provider of choice for many.

This flexible approach supports employers and apprentices by adapting to the needs of the business, including the capacity to release the apprentice for study time. Apprentices benefit from access to the College’s worldclass facilities and the opportunity to develop wider skills, while employers gain well-rounded apprentices who feel engaged and supported.

With the South West’s economy worth around £65billion a year, and on the brink of further significant growth, demand from employers for people to fulfil skilled roles will continue to grow. And as consumer and investment confidence returns, employers will add new recruits and upskill existing staff to meet the skills required.

And with the new Labour Government committed to one and a half million new homes nationally, and the launch of Skills England, it’s more vital than ever that training and Apprenticeships provision is aligned with the needs of the economy in the years to come.

Every year, the College sees more than 1,000 high quality young people qualify and look for their next steps on their career journey. They are going to be the beating heart of growth in our region, and will be the biggest asset within the region’s firms as we all rise to the opportunities ahead.

For more information and to discuss how we can support your business with our Apprenticeship programmes, call the Apprenticeships team at City College Plymouth on 01752 305026.

UNIVERSITY’S NEW WIND TUNNEL AIMS TO POWER R&D INNOVATION

Wind tunnels are the sort of thing you normally hear about in elite sport and the aerospace industry.

Formula One teams and global organisations including NASA regularly use them to ensure the innovations they are developing are as ‘slippery’ as possible, able to glide through the air with the least possible resistance.

What you might not know is that there is now a sub-sonic wind tunnel right in the heart of Plymouth city centre.

Generating speeds of up to 50m/s, equivalent to just over 110mph, its aim is to allow engineering scale models and design prototypes to be put through their paces, ensuring aerodynamic issues are ironed out at the earliest stages of development.

The wind tunnel forms part of the new Energy and Sustainability Laboratory within the University of Plymouth’s recently transformed Babbage Building.

The lab’s main aim is to provide students with hands-on experience of experimentation and analysis in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics using modern laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and data capture techniques.

However, a key factor in the laboratory’s development has always been to make it available for commercial research and development activities.

In that regard, it continues the University’s long-standing ambition to ensure its investment in new facilities and technologies benefits not only staff and students, but also the business community and wider society as a whole.

Rich Adams, Head of Enterprise and Commercialisation at the University, said: “There are countless facilities across our campuses being used by local, national and international companies on a daily basis. This ranges from the COAST Laboratory being employed to test offshore renewable energy prototypes, to the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre analysing the structural integrity of everything from metals, microchips and foodstuffs.

“The wind tunnel within the Energy and Sustainability Laboratory is an extension of that. It has created a facility that companies across the South West can make use of, but perhaps don’t have space or resources to develop themselves. We would encourage

anyone interested in hearing more to contact us and find out what the wind tunnel could offer their business.”

The Babbage Building was officially reopened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in March this year following an investment of more than £63million.

Reinvigorating what has stood as a prominent landmark on the Plymouth campus since the 1970s, it has been reimagined and re-engineered to create a series of world-class facilities that will educate and inspire future generations of engineers and designers.

Within it are a range of spaces designed to create a circular approach to enterprise and education, supported by equipment provided by companies at the global pinnacle of engineering and design.

This has created opportunities to learn about the principles of engineering and design in the new STEAM laboratories, and to apply those learnings using computer aided design (CAD) software in the Engineering Computing Lab.

Those designs can be manufactured using 3D printers in the DigiFab Lab, and any products can be tested in the Energy and Sustainability Laboratory, the Heavy Structures Laboratory, or the Autonomous Systems Laboratory.

The wind tunnel has been commissioned from ATE Aerotech, and the sectors that might make use of the new facility are almost limitless.

Engineering and energy are obvious candidates, but it could realistically benefit companies across anything from architecture to automotive design and autonomous systems, and much more.

The test section within the wind tunnel

measures around 3m long and 1.5m wide, and devices can be subjected to varying wind speeds and directions as well as levels of turbulence.

It also has transparent panel openings meaning that in addition to being monitored by a range of cutting-edge software, any devices placed within it can be visually assessed while a test is running.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the wind tunnel and how it might benefit their business can contact the University’s Enterprise Solutions team, and more details of how to do that can be found at https:// www.plymouth.ac.uk/business-partners/ enterprise-solutions.

HOW CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING CAN HELP PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS

The UK government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024 found that cyber-attacks remain a common threat for businesses of all sizes, with phishing identified as the most prevalent type - 84% of businesses attacked.

Phishing involves using fraudulent emails or other communications to impersonate reputable entities, aiming to convince individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords or credit card numbers.

The nature of phishing means that a company's workforce presents the biggest risk to their cyber security efforts. Unlike computers, humans are emotional, get tired, and stressed, and don’t always react logically, especially under pressure. You can’t remove email from modern businesses, so the threat is always there. This is why phishing is a popular attack vector. Fortunately, with effective and ongoing training, the risk can be significantly reduced.

KnowBe4 Security Awareness Training, provided by local IT support

company Acronyms, is a training platform that reduces the likelihood of an employee falling for a phishing attempt from 34.3% to 4.6% over 12 months. KnowBe4 is a phishing simulator that sends out fake phishing messages and tracks employee responses. If employees fall for the simulated phishing attempt, training is provided, and a dashboard gathers important data on company performance.

Acronyms deployed KnowBe4 for their client First Light, a domestic abuse charity in the South West. Mara, Business Support Manager at First Light, said: "KnowBe4 has been highly effective, with comprehensive modules and phishing simulations that significantly improve our staff's ability to recognise and avoid security threats. Our click rate on phishing simulations has drastically decreased from the first month to recent months, showing that the platform is working well."

How to Procure Energy: A Strategic Guide for Businesses

As businesses navigate the complexities of energy procurement, it’s essential to adopt a strategic approach that not only controls costs but also aligns with sustainability goals. BCR Associates, a trusted partner in energy management, offers tailored solutions to help businesses secure the best energy deals while minimising risk and improving profitability.

The 6 Steps to Effective Energy Procurement

• Step 1: Understanding Your Energy Usage: BCR starts by analysing your energy consumption patterns. This step involves assessing historical usage, peak demand, and seasonal variations. Understanding how your business uses energy is crucial for informed decision-making.

• Step 2: Understanding your future energy requirements: A key part of our process is to understand any planned changes to how your company will use energy. As part of our process, we delve into any anticipated adjustments in your company’s energy consumption. For instance, if you decide to transition from gas boilers to air source heat pumps for decarbonisation, this shift could substantially boost on-site electricity usage while minimising gas consumption.

Consequently, any contract should account for these significant changes without imposing penalties.

• Step 3: Choosing the Right Contract: Armed with insights from step one, BCR guides you in selecting the most suitable energy contract. Whether fixed, flexible, or blended, the goal is to optimise cost savings while managing risk.

• Step 4: Bill Validation: BCR’s bill checking service ensures accuracy and resolves discrepancies promptly. Overcharges are addressed, contributing to cost control.

• Step 5: Energy Strategy and Efficiency: BCR develops a customised energy strategy for your business. This includes identifying areas for efficiency improvements, such as upgrading equipment, optimising processes, and implementing energysaving measures.

• Step 6: Exploring Alternative Solutions: BCR goes beyond traditional procurement. We explore renewable energy options aligned with net-zero goals. By partnering with transparent and endorsed renewables suppliers, we provide businesses with green energy directly from renewable generators.

Additional Benefits Market Insights:

BCR keeps you informed with up-to-date energy market trends and analysis. This knowledge informs your decision-making process.

Risk Management:

For businesses with substantial energy consumption, BCR’s dedicated Relationship Managers will manage contract positions, minimising risk exposure.

Sub-Metering and Data Collectors: We manage organisations’ access to different verified data sources and bring them together in a single reporting platform called Visible Energy, giving intuitive, simple access to all data direct from the numerous DC/DA agencies.

Conclusion

BCR Associates empowers businesses to navigate the energy market successfully. By following these six steps and leveraging BCR’s expertise, you can secure the best energy deals, reduce costs, and contribute to a sustainable future.

CULTURE IN THE WORKPLACE: HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?

With GA Solicitors

Discussions around an organisation’s culture are not new. It has in fact been a topic for many businesses for some time. However, with so many organisations across many sectors struggling with recruitment, the idea of defining and creating culture has been brought to the fore. Staff retention, happiness and motivation have never been more important for businesses. What exactly is organisational culture?

Organisational culture is the set of core values, beliefs and attitudes that filter through the entire organisation and influence all decisions and behaviours. Culture is created through consistent behaviours and accountability when those values are not met. How can a positive culture impact your business?

The benefits of establishing a positive culture and removing more ‘toxic’ behaviours are substantial.

1. Recruitment – You will not only be more attractive to recruits, but by showcasing your values you are more likely to attract recruits which are a good fit with your company and its values

2. Retention – A positive culture which rewards hard work and recognises its staff means employees are much less likely to leave

3. Employee engagement – This is greatly increased, especially if staff are invited to feedback on the culture and values from the outset

4. Increase productivity – Happy and valued staff are motivated staff. This means more productive in regards to output and also hours put in

5. Reduce risk – Staff who work long hours,

face burnout or are not engaged with a business are more likely to make mistakes. At GA, even our professional indemnity insurer now requests proof of a positive culture to show we are looking to support staff and reduce risk

6. Reduction in staff sickness and absence –Engaged and motivated individuals are less likely to take sick days and are happy to be in their place of work

7. A loyal network of clients and referrers – As we know, people buy people. They want to work with those who have a positive attitude and adhere to core and fair values

8. Less management time – Pairing essential rules with a values-based system should lead to employees having more personal responsibility and higher standards in regards to work levels and attitude

How to identify and define your culture

Ask questions and, importantly, be honest with your answers. Identify opportunities for change and improvement.

Be sure to get input from all areas and all levels of the business – each person will have a different perspective and face different challenges. Think about the environment you want to project and how you can achieve it. What values matter most to your staff? What are your expectations and beliefs?

Integrating culture into your workplace

Many organisations use generalised words to represent their values, and do so without applying a strong set of behaviours to match. Employees need to know how the value (e.g. respect) permeates into their working life.

Ensure management lead by example on values and are good role models to staff. A single leader’s behaviour can set the tone for

an entire organisation.

Encourage a culture where speaking up is celebrated and be sure to act on that feedback where you can. There is still value in the old ‘You Said, We Did’ model – albeit probably now in a more modern format.

The values you set need to feed through the business from top to bottom. They should be promoted internally and externally. They should be considered within every decisionmaking process. They should impact who you recruit, promote and retain. They should be visible and something you can all be proud to adhere to.

Culture at GA Solicitors

We are in the midst of engaging our staff to get behind a new and more prominent set of cultures. As a professional service provider, we are a business which thrives only if our people do. We have for a long time focused on providing staff benefits, improving annual leave policies and trying to give sufficient mental health support and prominence. Now we take this even further, backed up by our staff, and are excited to take this path together.

WHY IMPLEMENT A DIGITAL WORKPLACE?

With ITEC a Xerox Business Solutions Company

The increase in remote and hybrid working has accelerated digital transformation across businesses of all sizes and industries. In today’s connected, technology-driven landscape, workplace automation and digital workplaces are emerging as the future of the new way of working.

What is a digital workplace?

A digital workplace refers to the virtual equivalent of a physical office or workspace, where employees perform their tasks using digital tools and technologies. Leveraging innovative digital technologies, such as cloud-based tools like Xerox Workplace Cloud, a digital workplace enables employees to collaborate in realtime from different locations while working on a project. Businesses large and small are adopting digital workplaces to help improve communication, facilitate collaboration between remote teams and enhance productivity.

analysing data at lightning speed. Meaning you can explore new markets or opportunities quicker to gain a strategic competitive edge.

Increased productivity

Traditional workplaces that rely on a physical office may not be as productive as they could be. In a digital workplace, employees can quickly and easily access the information, tools and teams they need to complete their tasks efficiently.

By digitising workflows, you can remove the reliance on paper-based processes to

- no matter where they are located.

As the new future of work and an expectation from many employees, remote working is here to stay. Businesses that accelerate their digital transformation will be ahead of the curve and could gain a competitive advantage when it comes to recruitment.

Free up resources and reduce costs

“BY DIGITISING WORKFLOWS, YOU CAN REMOVE THE RELIANCE ON PAPER-BASED PROCESSES TO UNLOCK PRODUCTIVITY GAINS.”

unlock productivity gains. Adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to automate mundane tasks, can also help your business save time and money on these labour-intensive tasks.

By leveraging and embracing digital technologies, you can help your business reduce its costs. Firstly, your teams will become more productive and agile to respond to new opportunities. But beyond those factors, as you move away from paper-based processes and adopt cloud-based technologies your need for on-premise storage reduces which can save your business money.

Benefits of a digital workplace

There are many benefits of adopting workplace automation to create a digital workplace, including:

Greater agility and flexibility in the workplace

Digital workplaces provide your business with the agility and flexibility to quickly respond to changes. The global pandemic proved how quickly things can change and how the ability to adapt is paramount. Digital technology also can help your business make more informed decisions by

Workplace automation enables employees to work more productively and utilise digital technology to automate repetitive tasks. This can free up time to focus on more creative and business-critical tasks. This can also help your business increase revenue and reduce business operational costs.

Open lines of communication

As your teams become more distributed, and by adopting more remote and hybrid working models, the digital workplace can help to keep your employees connected. Through the use of digital technology, you can enhance the way your teams communicate, stay connected and collaborate

These cost savings across the business can be redirected to other areas of the business to drive innovation that helps the business grow and become more profitable.

GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY CELEBRATES MARSH BARTON STATION’S SUCCESS WHILST LOOKING TO THE FUTURE.

This summer saw Devon’s newest station – Marsh Barton in Exeter - celebrate its first birthday. Marsh Barton is Exeter’s ninth railway station and is served by hourly Great Western Railway services between Paignton and Exmouth, with more at peak times.

Station features include two fully accessible platforms, ample cycle parking, live train departure screens and a pedestrian overbridge which has ramps to facilitate cyclists and provide disabled access to the whole station.

Since opening, the station has seen over 90,000 passenger journeys, providing access to over 500 businesses, new housing developments and safe cycle routes to the city centre, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and County Hall. The £16 million project was delivered by Devon County Council in collaboration with Network Rail and Great Western Railway and built by construction and civil engineering specialist firm GRAHAM.

Marsh Barton also represents another important link in the Devon Metro rail network, making it even easier for people to travel sustainably to and from Exeter. This, in turn, is helping reduce pressure on the city’s road network by helping tackle congestion and improve air quality. The success of its first year clearly demonstrates the importance of good transport links for the local economy, residents, businesses, and the wider community.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Devon work continues apace on delivering Okehampton Interchange. Situated on the edge of Okehampton and just a 2-minute drive from the A30, the new station is planned to open in 2025. It will build on the success of the reopened Dartmoor Line by serving the growing east side of the town, thereby reducing traffic through the town centre and on Station Road.

It will also open up rail access to wider areas of West Devon, Dartmoor, and North Cornwall

to better connect people with jobs, students with education and increase leisure opportunities for everyone.

The station is funded through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund (£13.4m) along with Devon County Council (£1.4m), West Devon Borough Council (£120,000) and Network Rail (£25,000). Features will include a larger car park than Okehampton with electric car charging facilities, as well as improved bus links and better access by foot and bicycle.

For those living in Devon and Cornwall who already use the Great Western Railway network, a Devon & Cornwall Railcard can save up to a one-third on standard class rail fares. Last year, thanks to funding from the Devon

and Cornwall Rail Partnership, the railcard was the first to be made available digitally. This means a smoother journey experience by making it easier to buy and safer to keep. The Railcard costs just £12 a year for residents aged 16 or over. Visit GWR.com/DCRailcard for more information and to buy online.

UNDERSTANDING KEY PERSON INSURANCE

Could your business sustain operations effectively following the death or illness of a key person?

This is something many business owners fail to consider.

Prepare for the consequences if a key individual were to encounter an unexpected event with key person insurance.

What is key person insurance?

A key person, key man or key woman insurance policy can help protect your business should the worst happen. Who is considered a key person?

Anyone whose expertise, knowledge or experience is crucial for the day-to-day operations of a business. This includes positions such as chairperson, managing director, marketing manager or sales manager. It’s someone whose inability to work due to illness or death would create financial difficulty or losses for the business. This can be manifested as having to hire a substitute, loss of clients and contracts, decline in profits, early loan repayment or decrease in customers confidence.

How do you calculate the level of key person insurance required?

When determining the level of cover required, it’s important to assess the impact that the loss of a key person would have on the business. This includes whether their absence would affect business profits and the cost of hiring a replacement or even if financial liabilities would require repayment. You need to identify your organisation’s key individuals and quantify their specific contribution to overall profit. There are formulas used to calculate the coverage needed:

• Up to two x proportion of gross profit directly attributable to key person.

• Up to five x proportion of net profit directly attributable to key person.

• (Key person salary/total payroll for business) x gross profit x recovery period (up to a maximum of five years).

Can key people insurance be claimed as a tax deduction?

If specific conditions are satisfied, company and Limited Liability Partnership tax treatments should be that:

• The premiums paid are considered allowable business expenses, which are deducted from the company’s profit. It reduces the Corporation Tax owed each year the policy is in effect.

• However, there’s a possibility of the Corporation Tax liability increasing as the proceeds from the policy will have to be accounted for as trading receipts.

• If conditions for favourable tax treatment

aren’t met, the premiums paid for the policy are generally not deductible for corporation tax purposes. Similarly, money received from a claim wouldn’t be taxed as trading income.

What additional covers should you consider?

It’s worth considering providing your key individuals extra benefits to mitigate risks and, demonstrate the value you place on them, including;

• Shareholder protection cover: enables the surviving owners of the business to purchase the deceased owner’s share from the deceased owner’s estate or beneficiaries.

• Critical illness cover: provides financial assistance to employees who are diagnosed with specific critical illness or conditions.

• Business life insurance (or Death in Service): provides employees with the assurance that their family will be financially supported in the event of their death while employed by your company.

Group income protection: ensures that employees and their families receive financial support if they are unable to work due to illness or disability.

Help is at hand. If you need help, or guidance with your business insurance needs, contact a Marsh Commercial expert on 01752 202030, or visit marshcommercial. co.uk.

PLYMOUTH AREA BUSINESS COUNCIL SPRING PROFESSIONALS DINNER 2024

Members of the Plymouth Area Business Council (PABC) and honoured guests were welcomed to the historic and unique venue of The Mess at HMS Drake in June 2024 for the annual Spring Professionals Dinner.

Everyone looked absolutely splendid in their finery, properly befitting the grand surroundings, as these wonderful photographs from John Allen will testify to.

Base Commander Brigadier Mike Tanner OBE ADC RM escorted some of our special guests up to the cupola at the top of The Mess before dinner to show them the views across the dockyard and the waterfront.

The group then rejoined everyone for an impressive display of precision and discipline by the RN Drum Corps. After that, the Brigadier took a ceremonial glass of port with the Drum Major and other guests.

There were so many highlights during the evening, including the delicious food and stirring, informative and entertaining speeches from our speakers, Angus Forbes and Jim McNeill.

But surely nothing could quite beat hearing memories from our very honoured guest, Suzanne Sparrow, when she proposed the toast to commemorate the D-Day operations.

Suzanne began her naval career 82 years ago, training at HMS Drake and following in her father’s footsteps. She was an eye witness on D-Day, watching American GI’s disembarking from Plymouth. And she also served her country throughout the war years.

It was an emotional moment for everyone and, quite rightly, she was given a standing ovation as she left.

Our sincere gratitude goes to our hosts, Mess President Cdr Martin Malone, and his Vice President, Lt Cdr Will Astley. Also to their team who made it all possible and provided for an unforgettable evening.

A huge thank you also to our dinner partners, Womble Bond Dickinson and Plymouth Manufacturers Group (PMG).

FOCUS: MOTORING

EXPLORE DEVON IN STYLE WITH THE PREMIUM MAZDA CX-60

You might be tempted to brush off the new Mazda CX-60 as just another mainstream attempt to break into the premium car market, but that would be a huge mistake.

On The Road

Model: Mazda CX-60 Homura 2.5

327ps e-SKYACTIV PHEV AWD

Price: £50,270 otr

0-62mph: 5.8 seconds

CO2 emissions: 32 g/km

Combined MPG TEH: 34.1 mpg

Fitted options: Convenience & Driver Assistance Pack (£2,100)

With its stylish interior, eye-catching exterior design, and unique engine options, this exciting new SUV is more than deserving of a place on the shortlist for your family’s next car.

The CX-60 stands tall as the largest vehicle in Mazda’s line-up, positioned above the CX-5 and ready to take on premium rivals like the BMW X3, the Volvo XC60, and the Lexus NX.

Starting at around £45,000, it’s not exactly a bargain, but it significantly undercuts its more expensive competition without skimping on quality or features.

and

Mazda has packed the CX-60 with so much kit that it was impossible to document all of it during my weekend road test. Let’s just say there’s plenty of bang for your buck!

The CX-60 comes in three trims: ExclusiveLine, Homura, and Takumi. Even the base

The Homura trim that I drove adds a stylish flair with gloss black exterior accents and striking black 20-inch alloy wheels, plus a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system and Mazda’s Driver Personalisation System.

Opt for the top-spec Takumi trim, and you’ll get white Nappa leather seats and

white maple wood interior trim.

While the CX-60 is bigger than its popular stablemate, the CX-5, it doesn’t offer a massive increase in interior space.

It comfortably seats five - plenty of room for two children’s car seats and an adult in the middle - while its boot comfortably fit our weekend shop, and (I’d imagine, if I’d got the opportunity!) my golf clubs...

Make no mistake - at 4,745mm the CX-60 is quite long. That’s not a problem on the road at all, as the CX-60 was one of the easiest cars to drive that I’ve ever tested.

Great throttle response, tight steering and very little lean in the bends makes it a pleasure, even on our pothole-filled roads.

Where people might struggle slightly is finding a parking space large enough to accommodate. During a Friday night trip to the Life Centre in Plymouth, my front and

Exclusive-Line is loaded with perks like heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel,
a user-friendly 12.3-inch navigation system.

FIND YOUR NEXT VEHICLE AT

back ends were both ever so slightly over the lines of the space.

However, when you take into account the standard size of a UK parking space is 4,800mm, I probably just picked a space that was on the small side! And when I parked up in Teignmouth the following day, I had no problems.

Regardless, the all-round and overhead cameras offer fantastic views to help you navigate any tight areas.

You also get that coveted high-up SUV driving position, which means great visibility over that huge bonnet and put me on a level with Range Rovers and other premium vehicles while driving up the A38.

Mazda stays true to its innovative roots with the CX-60’s technical offerings.

The entry-level models boast a 3.3-litre diesel engine with two power outputs and a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. This sixcylinder engine has its own charm and ample power, making it a great option for towing.

However, this plug-in hybrid model is likely to be the crowd favourite. It combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 17.8kWh battery, offering an official electric range of 39 miles.

While this might not compare to pureelectric options like the Volkswagen ID.4, it’s perfect for those who want silent weekday commutes and the ability to travel long distances on weekends without much hassle.

With 327PS and 500Nm of torque, the Mazda CX-60 PHEV is impressively quick. Certainly useful for getting away quickly when there’s an opportune gap at roundabouts.

Overall, the Mazda CX-60 is a highly attractive SUV that bridges the gap between models like the Toyota RAV4 and more premium options like the Audi Q5.

With its bold looks and superb interior, Mazda’s marketing team should have no problem attracting traditional premium car buyers.

Add to that the incredible Japanese reliability that this marque is so renowned

for - and it’s going to be tough for SUV fans to pass up.

That became even more obvious when I returned home from Vospers’ forecourt and was inundated with questions and comments from my neighbours all wanting to look inside.

It seems the people have spoken…
