A warm welcome to our packed summer edition of Profile, which shines the spotlight on Plymouth and its thriving marine and sustainability sectors.
There’s no doubt that Britain’s Ocean City is thriving as it gets ready to welcome in a new era of innovation, investment and opportunity.
Nowhere is that more evident than on our beautiful and picturesque coastline, where Plymouth is leading the way to become the UK’s first National Marine Park after securing £11.6 million of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
In our dedicated section, we look at why 2024 looks set to be a year to remember for people and businesses as Plymouth looks to become a global powerhouse for marine innovation.
I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Crowne Plaza Plymouth in May for our glittering Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Awards ceremony.
We had an incredible response for this year’s Awards, with more than 160 nominations across our 12 categories - as well as more than 70 entries for our 30 Under 30 campaign in partnership with Babcock International Group. Meet all our 30 Under 30 winners on pages 24 and 25.
It was also a huge honour to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Graham Stirling, who was joined on stage by his loving family.
A huge thank you to our Chamber Awards partners and our Chamber patrons, without whom we simply couldn’t host amazing events like this.
Our attention now turns to the Devon Business Show, which returns on 16 October with a fresh new format that will promote inclusivity and feature exciting, innovative and

We’ve also got a great new venue, Plymouth Life Centre, where we’ll be theming our event around people, health and wellbeing.
This event is one of the highlights of the region’s business calendar and is the perfect platform for businesses across Devon and Plymouth to showcase their products and services.
More than 50 stands have already been snapped up, and you can book your place by choosing your stand on our interactive map and completing the form on the Chamber website.
Finally, I’d like to say a huge well done to Plymouth Argyle Football Club on their incredible achievement of retaining their Championship status for another season.

With a visionary approach to education and community support, this initiative is set to transform the local workforce and contribute to the city’s sustainable development goals.
In conjunction with local partners, Argyle Community Trust, Plymouth Active Leisure and Livewell Southwest, the project is designed to address crucial areas such as confidence building, resilience, essential digital skills, and provides clear pathways from training to employment in key sectors.
The unique partnership will address where health and wellbeing have been significant barriers for people to gain new skills or get into work. Participants will have a tailored programme that can support fitness, rehabilitation, wellbeing or strength conditioning which will sit alongside training to
work and gain new skills.

Westcotts bingo night raises over £8k for Woodside Animal Welfare Trust
Westcotts held a fundraising bingo night and raised over £8,000 for Woodside Animal Welfare Trust.
The event was held as part of a year-long fundraising effort for the charity, which is nominated as the Charity of the Year (2024/25) for Westcotts‘ Plymouth and Torquay offices.
An animal rehoming charity based on the outskirts of Plymouth, Woodside is a large and vital safety net for vulnerable animals. As well as looking after young and healthy animals before they are adopted, the Trust has a collection of much loved resident pets that are unlikely to be adopted, such as the elderly and long-term sick.
The animals include dogs, cats, rabbits and hamsters as well as a few hand reared sheep, goats and a pot-bellied pig. The Trust relies on donations for its running costs which are high as many of the pets need veterinary attention and may be at the Sanctuary for some time as they recover.
The fundraising evening, held at Plymouth Argyle, saw guests enjoy several rounds of bingo, including a music round and a quiz round, alongside good food and a raffle. The event was a roaring success with over 200 people in attendance and over £8,000 raised
for the charity.
Matt Keane, Westcotts’ Charity of the Year region lead for South Devon, said: “This year the staff in both our Plymouth and Torquay offices voted to support Woodside as our nominated charity for the year. The team has put in a huge amount of work to ensure our first large event was a triumph – a special shoutout to Brooke Morey, Charlotte John, Emma Mills and Rebecca Kelly who worked tirelessly in the background to make this a success.
“The event went off flawlessly and was enjoyed by all of those who attended. Thank you to everyone who came along and kindly purchased numerous raffle tickets as well as to Ollie Jackman and James Fisher of Agile Business Comms Ltd who compered the evening amazingly!”
Lisa Darcey, Assistant Manager at Woodside Animal Welfare Trust, added: “Everyone at Woodside is astounded by the money raised at the bingo night organised by Westcotts. The kindness and generosity of those who attended on the evening, as well as the efforts put in by the Westcotts staff was truly amazing. With over 140 animals on site at present and the numbers growing these funds will be put straight to work on the animals in our care.”
local population with the skills needed to gain employment.
The project will focus on developing skills linked into sectors where there are currently significant vacancies, specifically in health, construction, engineering and digital careers, with tailored programmes aimed at entrylevel participants, career changers, and those aspiring for higher roles.
Pauline Hands, Executive of Health, Leisure & Public Services at City College Plymouth, speaks highly of the initiative, noting: “The Plymouth Skills Builder project marks a pivotal step in our approach to education and training, focusing on inclusivity and accessibility.
“By working closely with our partners, we are addressing critical skills gaps and laying the foundation for a healthier, more skilled workforce. This project underlines our dedication to nurturing talent across Plymouth, ensuring every individual has the opportunity to succeed.”
Westcotts is committed to supporting the communities in which the team live and work.
Matt Keane, Charity of the Year region lead for South Devon, has been working with the Plymouth and Torquay teams on ways to support the charity. This event was the latest in a series of fundraising initiatives, with previous events organised including a Halloween themed bake off.
The team have more exciting event plans in the pipeline, including several team members preparing to tackle the 3 Peaks Challenge later in the year.

Millions of pounds of investment, new jobs and incredible investment opportunities. Here, Profile looks at why summer 2024 is going to be one to remember for Plymouth’s people and businesses as Britain’s Ocean City looks to become a global powerhouse for marine innovation.
Plymouth. Is. Thriving. It’s a statement that, while true, only really scratches the surface of what is happening as Britain’s Ocean City gets ready to welcome in a new era of innovation, investment and opportunity.
Nowhere is that more evident than on our beautiful and picturesque coastline, where Plymouth is leading the way to become the UK’s first National Marine Park after securing £11.6 million of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Not only will the project revolutionise the way Plymouth interacts with its heritage, it will also promote a more harmonious relationship with the ocean and create hundreds of jobs.
Through the creation of the National Marine Park, with the support of the Heritage Fund, the city will invest to boost the species and habitats in Plymouth Sound, providing much-needed funding to help support the recovery of nature in the Sound and to improve resilience to the challenges faced by climate change.
As part of the exciting and diverse activity plan, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park (PSNMP) aims to engage the entire city generating closer connections to the ocean through experiences that promote positive behaviour change.
Elaine Hayes, CEO of PSNMP, explains: “This programme - the result of a twoyear process since its inception - has been designed to maximise the number of people accessing the National Marine Park’s incredible built and natural heritage, encouraging everyone to discover the treasures of Plymouth Sound and to enable communities to care for the National Marine Park.
“This journey to connect people with the sea in a new way will ensure that the communities of Plymouth can be active and engaged citizens of the sea.
“This will enable access to all the benefits that the National Marine Park can offer but will also be an integral part of restoring and protecting the world-class nature and landscape of the Sound, and we are very grateful to National Lottery players for making this possible.”
A series of sensitive restoration projects across the citywide waterfront will enable greater accessibility to PSNMP. These developments will open up new ‘gateways’ to the National Marine Park itself through previously inaccessible heritage sites, including the 17th century Mount Batten Tower - where improvements will enhance time spent here by visitors - and Garden Battery at Mount Edgcumbe, which has been
closed to the public since World War II. Meanwhile, as part of the overall Plymouth and South Devon Freeport initiative, £19.9 million from the government’s Levelling Up Fund will be used to support skills provision in Plymouth, regeneration of the city’s waterfront and port infrastructure at Millbay, and construction of a dedicated space to support companies in innovation within the Freeport’s South Yard site.
This grant will unlock essential capital works to key assets, which will benefit the city’s residents as well as establish Plymouth as a Net Zero port city with a superb waterfront.
Three sites will receive investment and are all central to the delivery of the Freeport: the Freeport Innovation Centre; the modernisation of port infrastructure at Millbay, and Freeport skills and regeneration of our waterfront.
It is estimated these investments will generate over £28.6 million of match funding, support new skills and career paths and create over 3,500 jobs.
Add to that Plymouth Argyle Football Club’s incredible achievement of retaining their Championship status for another season, and it’s evident the feel-good factor is here to stay in Britain’s Ocean City!

HOW CAN CITIES LIKE PLYMOUTH COMPETE NATIONALLY?
Plymouth is a city which competes effectively on the national stage, from its sporting success like Plymouth Argyle to its port and maritime offering, and awardwinning educational institutions. Most recently, the pan regional partnershipGreat South West - has been chosen as the country’s Marine and Maritime Launchpad and is set to receive up to £7.5 million of investment to drive innovation and business growth.
For provincial cities like Plymouth to compete nationally, they need to leverage their unique strengths and focus on strategic initiatives to drive economic growth and development. Westcotts supports businesses across Plymouth, providing specialist expertise and strategic advice to help them thrive and contribute to this growing city.
Adam Croney, Partner at Westcotts Plymouth office, recommends his top seven strategies to enable cities like Plymouth to compete on the national stage.
entrepreneurship by investing in education, research, and innovation ecosystems. In Plymouth, we see this already in the excellent collaboration between universities, our world-leading research institutions, and industry partners to support research and development, technology transfer, and startup incubation. The numerous spin-out companies and success of clusters such as Plymouth Science Park demonstrate how this can drive innovation-led growth and create opportunities for economic diversification.
Quality of life and place-making:
Adaptation and resilience: Finally, provincial cities must remain adaptable and resilient in the face of economic, social, and environmental changes. Embracing innovation, diversifying the economy, and investing in skills development can help cities navigate uncertainties and position themselves for long-term success and sustainability. As noted above, it’s important to maximise the proximity and expertise of our universities, colleges and other education institutions. Initiatives such as Skills Launchpad Plymouth and Building Plymouth are important, and it is exciting to see plans by City College Plymouth to bring skills and training right into the heart of the city centre with a campus for blue (marine) and green skills training.
By adopting these strategies and harnessing their unique strengths and resources, UK cities like Plymouth can compete effectively, drive economic growth, and create vibrant, inclusive, and resilient communities for the future.
“THE BRITAIN’S OCEAN CITY BRAND SPEAKS TO PLYMOUTH’S OUTWARD-LOOKING AND HISTORIC MARITIME LOCATION.”
Specialisation and niche markets: Provincial cities can identify and capitalise on their unique strengths and resources to develop specialised industries and niche markets. By focusing on sectors where they have a competitive advantage, such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, or creative industries, cities can differentiate themselves and attract investment and talent. Plymouth is uniquely placed to grow its already strong position and expertise in the defence sector and marine including through major employers such as Babcock, Princess Yachts and their extensive local supply chains; the development of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport; and leveraging our stunning natural location through the vision to create the UK’s first National Marine Park.
Investment in infrastructure: Improving infrastructure, including transportation networks, digital connectivity, and public amenities, is essential for enhancing the attractiveness and competitiveness of provincial cities. Investing in infrastructure projects that improve accessibility, connectivity, and quality of life can stimulate economic activity, support business growth, and attract residents and visitors.
Education and innovation: Provincial cities can foster a culture of innovation and
Emphasising quality of life factors, such as affordable housing, green spaces, cultural amenities, and recreational opportunities, can enhance the attractiveness of provincial cities as places to live, work, and visit. Investing in place-making initiatives that enhance the urban environment and promote community engagement can create vibrant, liveable cities that attract residents and businesses alike. Improvements to the city centre, redevelopment of the railway station, the physical regeneration of key waterfront areas and projects such as the Millbay Boulevard to ‘reconnect the city with the sea’ are all important elements in this.

NEED TO COMMUNICATE BRAND CREDIBILITY AND TRANSPARENCY?
TRY PRINT…
There is one aspect of life in Plymouth which is rare compared to other UK citiesevery month 92,000 homes in the city receive a copy of the Plymouth Chronicle newspaper.
In an age where regional and local newspapers have seen significant decline over the last twenty years it is almost unheard of that a newspaper could reach some 76% of all dwellings in a major city. Even more remarkable is that it is entirely free to each household.
People in any town want to know what’s going on, and they want relevant local information. It fosters a sense of community. Hyperlocal newspapers give readers the opportunity to hear about the community initiatives that they can get involved in and support, and the Plymouth Chronicle gives voice to all manner of developments, achievements and organisations working for the good of the city.
The Chronicle’s good news model elevates
the small successes as well as the major innovations and breakthroughs and gives businesses a vital connection to Plymouth.
Newsprint, at its best, delivers a trusted environment that complements digital platforms. By combining the credibility of print with the flexibility of digital through multimedia solutions such as QR codes, readers have options as to how they interact with printed stories. They can gain greater connection to articles through comment sections and access to rich media such as embedded video and imagery. During the Covid 19 pandemic the Plymouth Chronicle became a vital communication tool for the latest public health messaging and civic updates. Local authority, public health and on-the-ground charity organisations responding to the ‘unprecedented circumstances’ (may we never hear that phrase again!) relied on it throughout. It reached people with layered, in-depth messaging in a way that complemented and strengthened the
coverage from digital platforms, reaching digitally excluded demographics as well as digitally saturated audiences with communication that was trusted and engaged with in a unique way. It’s not just happening in Plymouth. Many people are seeking authenticity and a greater understanding of where their news is coming from and to meet that demand hyperlocal newspapers have sprung up in other locations, (check out the South Bristol Voice for one).
There is something of a resurgence happening in print, not just locally but globally. Plymouth is home to one of the foremost and widest reaching free publications in the country.
For any company looking to reach the population in Plymouth, well-liked and trusted newsprint offers a wide range of communication and marketing opportunities. For more information about the Plymouth Chronicle visit plymouthchronicle.co.uk or contact dave@cornerstonevision.com.

PARTNERING FOR PROGRESS: CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH’S COMMITMENT TO SMES
In Plymouth, the heart of our local economy beats strongly thanks to the contributions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These enterprises not only drive the city’s economic engine with their innovation and entrepreneurship, but they also bring vitality and unique offerings that enrich our community’s fabric. In education, we understand the crucial role these businesses play, not just as economic contributors but as essential cogs in the community’s broader ecosystem.
Out of the impressive 19,000 businesses that the city hosts, 98% are SMEs. This robust landscape of SMEs supports not only local employment but also drives innovation across key sectors such as marine operations, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace, all crucial to Plymouth’s strong industrial base. Their presence and success are essential to the city’s ongoing growth and its ability to attract further investment, making them central, not peripheral, to both economic strategy and community development.
a digital-first world, we’re aiming to enhance their competitive edge whilst fostering a culture of continuous learning.
Building on this foundation, the College has created a suite of bespoke training courses designed to be tailored to the ever changing needs of local SMEs. Full-time students and apprentices can study courses that emphasise real-world applications that prepare them for immediate entry into the workforce, whilst adults and returning students find courses tailored to bridge any gaps in their skill sets - often focusing on digital literacy and new technological competencies that are essential for career advancement. Current employees working within local SMEs can access training specifically designed to advance their current skill sets, ensuring that they not only upskill in their existing niches, but that they remain at the cutting-edge of industry developments.
One significant hurdle is the underrepresentation and under-appreciation of SMEs in broader economic conversations. Too often, their voices go unheard, and their potential is underestimated. This oversight not only hinders the recognition of SMEs but also impacts their ability to influence policy and gain access to essential resources that could nurture their growth and sustainability.
“ONE SIGNIFICANT HURDLE IS THE UNDER-REPRESENTATION AND UNDER-APPRECIATION OF SMES IN BROADER ECONOMIC CONVERSATIONS.”
As the anchor institution for skills, our role must evolve from that of a provider to that of a partner. It goes beyond tailored courses and toolkits, it’s about actively engaging with the local community to create solutions together that address their specific challenges and aspirations. We champion SMEs, advocating for their needs and celebrating their successes, thereby ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive.
SMEs face many obstacles and challenges, including limited resources for training and development, grappling with staying abreast of technological advancements, and the need for greater visibility in a competitive market. The ongoing digital revolution, characterised by rapid technological changes, demands a workforce that is not only skilled but also continuously adaptable. To meet this need, we’ve developed a comprehensive digital toolkit for SMEs. Designed to equip local businesses with the necessary tools to thrive in
We actively cultivate a community of collaboration and support through our Skilfully Collaborating initiative - a series of events hosted at the College where SMEs are invited to come together to discuss their challenges and share insights. These events provide a platform for open dialogue and mutual learning, helping SMEs to feel less isolated in their community. This approach isn’t about filling immediate skills gaps; it’s about anticipating future challenges and opportunities in the market, ensuring that our SME partners remain competitive and robust.

WHAT IS NET ZERO AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT BUSINESSES IN DEVON?
Net Zero is best defined as the state where emissions of carbon dioxide due to human activities and removals of these gases are in balance over a given period.
Since the pandemic, we have witnessed a significant increase in the requirements for businesses. Firstly, they need to calculate their Carbon Footprint, and then they must establish a robust sustainability program to reduce it. Investing with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations is not only responsible but also good for business.
Planet is one of the strategic priorities for the chamber, and it is focused on achieving Net Zero. This involves working towards Sustainable Development Goals, clean growth, and sustainable transport.
All businesses emit carbon, so to embark on the journey toward Net Zero, you must first understand your carbon emissions. Let’s delve into the definitions of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 Carbon emissions:
SCOPE 1:
These emissions occur when CO2 is directly emitted by your business. Examples include fuel emissions from company-owned cars, diesel generators, gas boilers, and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) like air-conditioning leaks.
SCOPE 2:
These are indirect emissions created on your behalf. For instance, they result from the generation of energy purchased from a utility provider, such as electricity or steam.
SCOPE 3:
This encompasses the broader impact of your business activity. It includes emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, transport, distribution, and business travel - 15 areas in total.
Now, let’s break down the process into five stages:
STAGE 1: MEASURE
• Gather data over a 30–60day period to gain a detailed understanding of your business.
• Define parameters for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 to establish the current carbon footprint.
• Collect external data, including information from key suppliers, contracts, and purchase ledgers.
• Utilize a Carbon Calculator, a 21-step questionnaire that provides a baseline emissions figure (tCO2e) and allows benchmarking against other businesses in your sector.
• You can start the process by visiting our website: https:// www.bcrassociates.co.uk/ compare-your-carbon
STAGE 2: TARGETS AND STRATEGY
• Set achievable, ambitious short- and long-term carbon reduction targets aligned with your company’s Net Zero goals.
• Consider any requirements from external sources, such as long-term clients or potential clients.
• Engage key stakeholders to
ensure reporting mechanisms are established and data feedback is efficient.
STAGE 3: CONTROL COSTS
• Make strategic buying decisions based on data to control and reduce costs.
• Encourage all suppliers to include carbon emissions on their invoices.
• Seek advice where necessary and explore technology solutions to achieve your targets.
• Conduct staff briefings to drive stakeholder engagement.
STAGE 4: REDUCE USAGE
• Implement quick, low-cost wins by making changes to behaviour, resources, and infrastructure based on key findings.

DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY AND PROFITABILITY WITH DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
With the UK aiming to be net zero by 2050, businesses are prioritising their sustainability efforts. Businesses large and small and across every industry are looking at the ways they can leverage technology through digital transformation to support their sustainability journey. In doing so, they can not only reduce their impact on the environment but also build operational resilience that will futureproof their business for years to come.
Digital transformation is the process of deploying appropriate technology to update how work is done. This allows your business to meet the demands of the modern workplace and expectations of both your customers and employees alike. Digital transformation can include automating processes via AI and machine learning, using digital workflows and cloud-based applications to mitigate paperbased operations and replacing legacy operations with new digital products.
Why digital transformation and sustainability go hand in hand
lowering emissions and costs through remote working and boosting workforce productivity by enabling secure work from anywhere solutions.
Three key principles will help your business be more sustainable:
1. REDUCE: How can businesses reduce the amount of materials they use, how much they travel or lower their energy consumption?
2. REUSE: Could businesses re-use products. E.g. refilling of toner cartridges and even refurbishment of printing devices? Recycling toners and using recycled toners prevents millions of supply items from entering landfills each year and contributes to a circular economy.
3. RECYCLE: What can a business recycle? For example, paper to reduce waste and prevent it from entering landfills.
result in lower paper consumption and less paper waste.
Become more paperlight with document scanning services
Businesses can reduce their paper consumption and make progress toward their sustainability goals by digitising paper documents.
Taking healthcare as an example, hospitals can partner with a technology provider to help them scan paper-based patient files to create digital copies. The old paper copies can be recycled and new patient records will be created digitally without the need for paper copies. By leveraging scanning technology, businesses can improve their digital document management and become more paper light.
Support a work from anywhere workforce
Cloud-based technologies can help support a work from anywhere workforce, which not only improves productivity but also helps to reduce workforce travel. From digitising documents to moving business processes to the cloud, technology is at the heart of flexible working and can drive a business’s sustainability goals.
CLOUD-BASED TECHNOLOGIES CAN HELP SUPPORT A WORK FROM ANYWHERE WORKFORCE, WHICH NOT ONLY IMPROVES PRODUCTIVITY BUT ALSO HELPS TO REDUCE WORKFORCE TRAVEL.
Reduce waste with document management
Greener intelligence is the centre of Xerox workplace offering.
While some businesses may have already begun their digital transformation journey, many are now looking at it from a different angle and are using it as a strategy for sustainability. When decisions are made with sustainability in mind your business can operate more efficiently, productively and with less impact on the environment.
Businesses can become more sustainable by reducing their paper waste and consumption,
A document management system is a solution that can digitally store, share, track and manage files and documents to remove the need for paper files. Further, digital document workflows can help you improve efficiencies, significantly reducing or eliminating paper-based processes and in turn reducing paper waste.
Adopting a document management system that converts paper files into digital files will

DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS WITH BUSINESSES
By Rich Adams, Head of Enterprise & Commercialisation, University of Plymouth
You don’t need me to tell you it’s a tough time to run a business. Enterprises of all shapes and sizes, and from all sectors, are increasingly being asked to do more with less. Most are still working against the lingering effects of the global pandemic, the rises in energy prices, changing national and regional policies, and much more besides. Then there is the ongoing quest to reduce the impact we are collectively having on the planet.
Amid all of that, the old adage of speculating to accumulate may feel like something of a pipe dream. However, an initiative we launched at the University in 2021 has shown the appetite to do so is alive and well. And it is safe to say the projects pursued through our Research and Development Solutions Fund are having many and varied impacts locally and globally.
collaborations have covered topics as diverse as engineering and early years education, sustainable soils and psychology, robotics, and renewable energy.
Over the course of six funding calls, we have invested more than £560,000. The maximum for each collaboration of £20,000 may, to some organisations, feel like a drop in the ocean. But our investment has yielded four times that in additional research funding, in addition to around £250,000 of private sector match funding. And there are more grants in the pipeline.

It was also designed to act as a catalyst for businesses to gain even greater access to our university’s facilities such as the COAST Lab, the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre and the Digital Fabrication Laboratory.
I last wrote about the fund in this magazine just after it had got off the ground with an initial five projects. In the three years since, we have enabled 28 collaborations with industry, involving well over 50 of our academics. Those

It only takes a quick glance at some of the project case studies on our website to gain a full appreciation of what the fund has enabled businesses to achieve. On that page, you can read about Brixham-based ARC Marine and its work on artificial reefs, and Cornish Essential Oils’ work to investigate how pharmaceutical plant species derivatives could be used in the treatment of Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Slightly further afield, you will also see how we have enabled cotton farmers in Pakistan to work more sustainably.
We will shortly be announcing the results of the R&D Solutions Fund’s seventh funding call. And there will be further opportunities moving forward, with businesses from any industry sector or geographic location eligible to apply in partnership with a Plymouth academic. The experiences of the last three years have left us in no doubt that there’s an appetite for research and development within the business community. We are excited to continue building on that for the future.

25 Years of Burts: Celebrating provenance and supporting the RNLI
As Plymouth-based Burts marks its 25th anniversary this year, it’s a moment to reflect on the business’ journey from a small start-up to becoming a renowned name in the world of premium snacks. Founded in 1999 by Richard and Linda Burt, two dedicated deli owners with a shared passion for food, the company has come a long way, but its commitment to excellence remains unchanged.
Burts has gained recognition for its premium, hand-cooked British potato chips that are made with care. Committed to exclusively sourcing Red Tractor approved potatoes sourced from local growers, the small-batch packs are full of tasty chips, thanks to its long-standing partnerships with ingredient suppliers from across the South West, such as South Devon Chilli Farm, Eversfield Farm, Quicke’s of Devon and The Artisan Malt Vinegar Company and
more, helping to create authentic flavours that make Burts the award-winning snack maker it is today.
Deeply rooted in the Devon community, Burts’ key mission is to make delicious and quality snacks, all whilst supporting independent suppliers and caring about the local area and charities close to its heart. Since 2021, Burts has supported the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), contributing £250,000 to the vital lifesaving work along the UK’s coastlines. As part of its ongoing partnership with the RNLI and their 200th anniversary celebrations this year, Burts has announced the launch of its limited-edition RNLI pack takeovers this summer. Featuring
DRIVING BETTER BUSINESS TRAVEL AT A TIME OF CHANGE
Business travel is everywhere. Employees want to connect with customers and contacts, while growth in mobile and delivery services is driving demand for commercial vehicles.
But it’s increasingly complex, with emerging regulations around safety and decarbonisation, new technologies such as connected and electric vehicles, and new employee travel
requirements because of flexible and hybrid working.
Today, Enterprise Mobility operates nine branches in Devon, providing flexible terms on every type of vehicle.
In addition, Enterprise Car Club vehicles are parked in convenient on-street locations in Exeter, Honiton, Saltash and Ottery St Mary. These can be accessed via smartphone app and hired for just a few hours at a time.
Businesses can also get detailed advice on all their commercial vehicle needs from the Enterprise Flex-E-Rent depot in Exeter, including trucks and vans with special equipment and signage.
Joining the Chamber of Commerce was a way to connect with businesses and residents needing better mobility, and help organisations understand exactly how employees are travelling.
local heroes from the RNLI, the exclusive pack designs will feature on two of Burts’ most popular flavours, Lightly Sea Salted and Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar throughout July and August 2024. The partnership demonstrates the crucial role the sea plays in the lives of the Devon community, and the importance of the RNLI’s work for locals and thousands of visitors to the county every year. The packs will be available from independent shops, cafes, delis, and pubs, as well as Amazon, and retailers Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Coop regionally whilst stock lasts.
This summer, Burts is also introducing a brand-new, limited-edition flavour of Spicy Barbecue hand-cooked potato chips for summer.
Bursting with flavour and perfect for summer snacking the new flavour will be available to purchase for a limited time from June 2024 via Amazon, as well as in independent shops, cafes, delis, and pubs.
If they are using their own cars for work, are those cars properly maintained and insured for business journeys? How many businesses add up all the mileage reimbursement claims to know how many miles their employees are driving in personal vehicles? Do they know the age and CO2 emissions of those cars?
Technology from Enterprise Mobility enables businesses to capture information on employee travel so they can make better decisions about how to support their people.
The company’s team of experts can then help organisations design flexible travel policies that support employees in making better mobility choices, reduce mileage, and even encourage more use of ‘active’ travel through walking and cycling.
Businesses can start the conversation with Enterprise Mobility with no obligation. Just give us a call and get on the road to better business travel.

ARGYLE COMMUNITY TRUST AND PARTNERS CELEBRATE GREEN LIGHT FOR THE REGENERATION OF BRICKFIELDS
Plans have been approved for the multimillion-pound transformation of Brickfields into a sporting centre of excellence and asset for the wider Plymouth community.
Plymouth City Council planners have given the green light to the scheme brought forward by a partnership between Plymouth Argyle,
The latest approval paves the way for the wider Brickfields site regeneration to commence. Initial activities will commence in May 2024, with site activity increasing over the summer with a view of completing the new facilities by September 2025.

The milestone means legal agreements can be formalised, remaining funding secured and proposals to deliver an exciting range of community and sport facilities on the underused site in Devonport can now progress.
Extensive community and sport facilities will include new grass and all-weather 3G pitches, athletics facilities, play zones, better public access and landscaped areas, and parking. Brickfields is also currently home to the DHaN Food Bank which supports over 300 local families each week and will be retained.

The proposals were submitted in autumn 2023 and incorporated the feedback received in consultation with residents and the wider community.
It is the second major approval for the Brickfields site after permission was granted in 2023 for the partnership to develop a new community hub to be operated by the Trust on the site. THE EVERCHANGING LEGAL LANDSCAPE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS AND EMPLOYERS
Keeping up to date with legislative changes in every arena can be challenging. You have your own company to run, your own clients to deal with and staff to manage. Having a legal expert on your side to provide you with relevant updates and protect your business can be priceless. Not following the letter of the law can lead to not only hefty fines but potentially irreparable damage to your business and its reputation.
With this in mind, we thought it would be helpful to provide a brief overview of some important recent changes to the legal landscape.
Changes to Companies House Requirements:
In March, new and enhanced powers were given to Companies House in a bid to limit the UK’s growing exposure to fraud, corruption, and money laundering. This was under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 which was introduced in October 2023.
Under these reforms the Registrar has broader powers to improve the accuracy and reliability of information filed at Companies House. They have the ability to check, remove or decline information that companies attempt to file and, importantly, information which has already been filed.
What could the changes mean to your business?
• All new and existing registered company directors, people with significant control (PSCs) and those delivering documents for filing will need to complete identity
verification.
• Companies can no longer use a PO Box for their registered office address.
• Applications for company incorporation will include an additional step - individuals forming the company have to confirm that it has a ‘lawful purpose’ and that its future intended activities are lawful.
• The reforms introduce further duties on companies to collect and share accurate statutory registers.
What next?
There are more phases to these reforms that are yet to come into force and will be rolled out through the rest of this year and beyond, the timing of which is still to be confirmed. Keep checking GA’s website as we will be providing updates as these new rules come into force. Alternatively please get in touch with our company commercial team for more information.
Holiday Pay Changes 2024:
Historically the calculation and administration of annual leave and holiday pay for casual, zero hours and irregular hours workers has been challenging. It is hoped that some of these difficulties will be resolved through the Employment Rights (Amendment, Revocation, and Transitional Provision) Regulations 2023, which comes to the fore from 1st April 2024 (or January 2025 for employers who operate annual leave on a calendar year system).
Employees and workers deemed to be irregular hours workers and part-year workers, will now have annual leave accrued at the rate
of 12.07% of the hours worked in a particular pay period (usually weekly or monthly).
As part of these 2024 holiday pay changes, employers can also choose to pay the additional hours as rolled-up holidays to the employee/worker. The effect is that the workers will receive additional holiday pay but will not then take specific time off as paid holiday.
It is anticipated that this may simplify matters for employers and potentially workers. These changes are not necessarily straight forward and new definitions of classes of workers need to be carefully considered and existing contracts examined to determine if they apply. There is also some uncertainty over how the legislation will be interpreted so it is advised to follow the new rules closely and seek professional legal advice.
If you need advice about these recent changes, or any other legal issue, then please contact our experienced legal team for more information and guidance. General Enquiries enquiries@GAsolicitors.com 01752 203500

MANAGING BUSINESS INTERRUPTION RISKS AMIDST UNCERTAINTY
The knock-on effect of events like the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have created an uncertain environment for businesses, including real volatility across supply chains, labour costs, and inflation.
This means the time may be right to reevaluate crucial insurance covers like business interruption (BI) insurance. For instance, if your property or contents, such as machinery and equipment, are damaged, will it take longer to source replacements? How would such a delay affect your trading results and the need for BI cover?
Why is BI insurance necessary?
BI insurance is vital to a comprehensive risk management strategy. The typical trigger for a BI claim is an insured property damage loss, such as fire or flood at a business’s premises. The consequences of these events can be financially and operationally devastating.
Exploring the benefits of BI insurance
There are many potential benefits associated with BI insurance following a serious incident. It can safeguard a company’s income stream during disruption, helping to maintaining cash flow, pay employees, and meet financial obligations.
BI can also help to cover unforeseen or additional expenses that are required in order to continue trading and meet contractual commitments. By helping to maintain business operations or recover quickly from disruption, it can help to protect customer trust.
Optimising BI cover to build financial resilience
The effectiveness of BI cover depends on how well it’s tailored to your business’s needs. An insurance expert can help you to assess
your exposures and consider various risk management strategies.
A thorough risk assessment to identify potential threats to your business is a common starting point. This includes assessing your supply chain’s vulnerability, key assets, and critical functions. Understanding these risks allows for more precise coverage.
It’s also important to check the accuracy of gross profit values declared to your insurer, particularly since the insurance market definition of ‘gross profit’ differs from an accountant’s. For example, BI policies often include salaries within the policy definition of gross profit. This is because businesses typically need to continue paying their staff even if trading operations are temporarily disrupted.
Given the volatility affecting supply chains, it’s also a sensible precaution to have another look at the maximum indemnity period in a BI policy. This is typically expressed as the number of months following the date of loss, during which the policyholder can recover BI losses arising from a claim.
Your maximum indemnity period should be sufficient to allow your organisation to fully recover from a potentially catastrophic event. Remember, ‘recover’ includes fully rebuilding the insured property and resuming expected levels of financial performance.
Finally, make sure that
the valuation of your insured property and assets accurately reflects their replacement or repair costs. An undervaluation can result in insufficient coverage, while overvaluation leads to higher premiums.
Review and adjust coverage
Even in more settled times it’s vital to regularly review and update BI coverage to account for changes in your business. These can include expansions, new product lines, or shifts in supply chain dynamics - and this is likely to be even more important in the current environment.
After all, ensuring that your coverage remains aligned with your evolving business could be critical to its survival after a serious incident like fire or flood.

Name: Ronnie Carter
Role: Devon & Somerset LSIP Project Executive
What drives you?
The boundless potential for growth and improvement and the ease of today’s technology, but it’s not just about me. I want to use what I learn to make a difference, to leave things a little better than I found them. Whether it’s helping another business or my friends, volunteering in my community, or working on a project that could benefit others, it’s this desire to create a positive impact that really keeps me going. It’s like my own personal fuel.
Where do you see the future of your organisation?
As one of the newest hires of the DP Chamber of Commerce, I’m really excited about the future. I reckon we’re on a brilliant trajectory, not just keeping up with the times, we’re shaping them. Our members are at the heart of everything we do. We’re committed to understanding their needs and delivering top-notch solutions that hit the mark every time. We’re not just their service provider, we’re their partner of choice.
The team is always creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can bring their A-game. As for growth, the sky’s the limit, really. So, here’s to the future. I reckon it’s going to be a cracking ride.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
“If you are not living your life for yourself, then who is going to live it for you?” It’s from a great book by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. It’s a
reminder from Adlerian psychology that we should not let feelings of inferiority dictate our lives, but instead, embrace our individuality and authenticity.
If you could sum up your CV in one word, it would be..?
Diverse.
When it comes to business, do you follow head or heart?
My approach is fairly even, striking a balance between logic and intuition. My passion lies in analysing data, a task that requires a methodical and logical mindset. I use my head to make reasoned and sensible decisions, carefully weighing the pros and cons of each option. However, I also get the importance of intuition in decisionmaking. I trust my gut feelings and instincts to guide me, especially when data may not provide a clear direction.
Describe yourself in five words Driven, compassionate, innovative, reliable and Polish!
How do you balance life and work?
As a keen tennis player and a runner, gamer, DIY guru and self-proclaimed food critic, I carve out time for my passions. At home I have the symphony of teenage “UGHs!” and a Siberian husky’s howls filling my evenings, so my free time is quite lively. At work, I like to get stuck in and believe that a bit of pressure is crucial but equally you need to enjoy what you do. This is the key to a balanced life.
What’s your favourite quote?
“The impossible often has a kind of integrity to it which the merely improbable lacks”.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy D.Adams
Who has been the greatest influence on you?
I would say that my greatest influences are an amalgamation of my family, friends, and extraordinary people I’ve encountered throughout my life, work, and travels. I also look up to the innovative minds of our generation. Take Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Elon Musk, Dame Stephanie Shirley who’s been a trailblazer in the tech world and done a ton for charity, to name a few.
What are you most proud of?
One of the things I’m most proud of is the bold decision I made when I was 17. I left home and set out on my own, embracing the unknown. This journey took me to new places, introduced me to diverse cultures, and presented challenges that I had to overcome on my own. Above all, what I’m most proud of is my family. Their love, support, and the purest moments of joy have been my greatest source of strength and inspiration. They are a constant reminder of what truly matters.
