Big changes on the horizon Even though we are just a few weeks into 2016, work on a number of major developments in the city are already under way. During the first week in January it was announced that award-winning regeneration company Urban Splash had acquired the Civic Centre from Plymouth City Council. Urban Splash, which has helped transform the Royal William Yard, has already started work on the 14-storey building and will create a mix of residential and commercial use, including apartments, restaurants and shops. Hot on the heels of that news came the announcement that work had started on the new coach station in Plymouth’s West End. The new facility is expected to be completed by the summer - enabling work to start on developing the former Bretonside bus station into the Drake Circus Leisure complex. Then the City Council announced that it had acquired the 10-storey Quality Hotel, which has turned into an embarrassing eyesore on Plymouth’s waterfront. The hotel, which was built in the late 60s, closed two years ago and has since become a target for anti-social behaviour including several arson attacks. Demolition of the building was due to get under way as we went to press and it is hoped that the site will attract an international standard hotel. Meanwhile, work on what will become Plymouth’s tallest building is also well under way. The 22-storey student accommodation block is being built on the site of the former Beckly Court at the junction of Coburg Street and Western Approach. It’s all more evidence of the growing attraction of Plymouth for investors. Let’s hope it continues. Enjoy the latest issue

Foot Solutions a Family Solution When retail manager Sharon Sharp took her elderly father to Foot Solutions for some professional footcare advice she had no idea just how much it was going to affect her family. Sharon, who lives in Ernesettle said: “My dad, who is in his 80s, suffers with Arthritis and always had trouble finding shoes that could help him. I wanted to find out if Foot Solutions could offer any additional advice. “The staff were excellent and quickly identified a solution which involved custom made arch supports and also expertly fitted a really comfortable pair of shoes. It has made a tremendous difference to his life and he is really pleased with the result.” It set Sharon thinking about her own situation. She had injured her knee as a youngster in a park accident and in recent years had suffered increasing leg pain. As the manager of The Entertainer toy store in Drake Circus she is on her feet most of the day and this added to the problem. “The pain had got worse over the years and since the beginning of last year had been pretty constant,” she said. She decided to make her own appointment with Foot Solutions and a free, in-depth Foot Assessment revealed that her posture and balance was being affected by the way she walked. Sharon followed a similar route to her father in the form of arch supports and shoes for work. Impressively, in her words, she is now completely free of pain.

Sharon Sharp with Andrew Scowcroft of Foot Solutions

To complete the family journey, Sharon was so impressed that she then recommended her partner who had a long history of sports injuries and her Mother who suffers with bunions to the store with exactly the same outcomes. Sharon said: “Through visiting Foot Solutions I have learned so much about how you can look after yourself through your feet and the importance of seeking professional advice. I would have no hesitation in recommending Foot Solutions to anyone experiencing the sort of problems we had in our family.

The Plymouth Magazine February 2016

When Magdalena Mrvova was taught as a young girl how to sew by her mother, it was by necessity. Growing up in then Communist Czechoslovakia, original new clothes were often hard to come by so it was literally a case of ‘make do and mend’.

Little could Magdalena have known then that those skills would later be put to professional use at her growing business right here in Plymouth. Magdalena came to England in 2005, since when she has combined her creative, teaching and entrepreneurial skills to set up a number of ventures including a photography business, Studiomag, and her Mutley-based sewing space, called Sewansome. As well as carrying out clothing and soft furnishing commissions and alterations at the bright and airy rooms at the premises in Ermington Terrace, Magdalena also teaches sewing in a series of workshops, courses and 1-2-1 tuition sessions. She also refurbishes furniture and makes one-off pieces for the home, including stunning lamps. The difficult economic climate of recent years has seen more people – young mums especially – learning traditional skills which for Magdalena was a way of life when she was growing up in what is now the Slovakian capital, Bratislava: “I was lucky enough to be born at a time when mothers taught all their practical skills to their children, which meant I started to learn handicrafts from

a very early age,” she said. “It was still a Communist country then and we were years behind Western Europe. So I learned the sort of skills that the older generation here in the UK would have learnt.” Magdalena went on to study fashion design at college and art history as well as business management and languages at university in France. She was living in Cornwall when she launched Sewansome nearly four years ago, which explains the name’s clever play on words. “The recession had kicked in and people wanted to make and mend things, to upcycle clothes and soft furnishings,” she told Plymouth Magazine. “So all of a sudden my skills came into use, by circumstance really. This was before the sewing programmes on TV and the current boom in sewing and handicrafts. “For example, people now want their curtains altered so they can take them when they move house. But the biggest change is that young mothers want to learn how to make things. It just makes financial sense, apart from the creative and learning element.” With design and teaching qualifications now under her belt, Magdalena is helping more and more people in her workshops. Beginners and improvers can book workshops or courses of five sessions and, because each workshop is restricted to a maximum of six people, they can learn at their own pace, with Magdalena on hand to help. People are advised to bring their own machines to sessions, although use of a machine can be booked if needed. Magdalena provides recycled fabric for people to work on samples. Attendees will learn dressmaking and home furnishing skills, such as curtains, cushions and Roman blinds. Hand-outs are provided throughout the courses and workshops. The aim is that people should then have the skills to start making things at home. But for those who want to specialise in a specific area, Magdalena has 1-2-1 bespoke lessons for those with a particular skills need. In these sessions, people can bring their own fabric to make items of clothing or things for the home – Magdalena can offer advice on this and help to source the material if wished. Groups of up to six friends wanting a fun activity can also be catered for. After initially working from home and then at City Business Park in Stoke, Magdalena says her switch to Mutley a year ago has been a great move: “It’s a professional environment here and it’s kitted out with everything that people will need, including a big cutting table. But it also has a nice, friendly feel to it and lots of light. “I’m a friendly person by nature and I like to encourage people, whatever level they’re at. People leave here with much more confidence in what they can do. I have very good customer retention and I’ve had a lot of lovely feedback,” added Magdalena, whose Sewsansome Facebook page has approaching 1,000 ‘likes’. There is a public car park directly outside plus on-street parking and Sewansome is just yards from bus stops on Mutley Plain. Visit the website for more information, including packages and details of gift vouchers for workshops, courses and sewing lessons.

who unfortunately suffer from a variety of heart conditions and would struggle without the help of HeartSWell, therefore this initiative is vital in helping the charity to save lives. “I am looking forward to tasting wonderful food, at a great price for HeartSWell, such a special charity!” HeartSWell is committed to supporting heart patients, their families and carers across the Westcountry. With the money that is raised through these charity lunches, HeartSWell will be able to continue to provide specialist equipment to the Cardiac Unit at Derriford Hospital, as well as the Royal Duchy Hospital, RD&E Hospital, golf clubs, sports venues, GP surgeries and various other locations around the region. It is also HeartSWell’s mission to provide local businesses and sports clubs with a defibrillator – a piece of equipment that with the right training can save a life. With each defibrillator costing over £1,000, it is key for HeartSWell to raise money so that through the public’s generosity, the charity can donate this life saving equipment to businesses all over the region. Clem Spencer, chairman of HeartSWell said: “It is fantastic that two inspiring, great, local chefs have come together to not only make incredible food but to support HeartSWell! Sounds Musical Theatre Company launches its 105th year with the Broadway Tony Award winning musical, The Pajama Game, at Devonport Playhouse from March 9 to 12. Following last year’s resounding musical success of ‘Carousel’ Marcus Alleyne again fronts this year’s production as musical director, joined by Amanda Paddison who has produced many of the Plymouth based company’s major shows. The Pajama Game is set in Sleep Tite pajama factory in mid-town Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It deals with a powder keg of unrest, where the workers’ demands for a seven-and-a-half cent pay rise meet with a stubborn ‘No!’ from the management. In the midst of this tension, love blossoms between feisty Babe, the grievance committee head, and Sid, the handsome new factory superintendent. They find themselves on the opposite sides of the factory dispute, but when the two get together they wind up discussing a whole lot more than job concerns! Love, laughter, joy, jealousy, intrigue and skulduggery abound in this pacy musical. The diverse cast, full chorus and solo numbers plus strong musical story lines provide ample opportunity for Sounds Musical Theatre Company, who are delighted to be joined by even more new members, to showcase their trademark close harmony, acting and musical skills.

Top soul artist Andrew Roachford launches his new album and European tour in Plymouth

Top soul and jazz singer Andrew Roachford is launching his new album and European tour in Plymouth - thanks to the efforts of one of his biggest fans. Andrew is appearing at The Hub in Bath Street on Friday February 26 and it’s an event which Brian Cross is eagerly looking forward to. Brian, who works for Babcock, first met Andrew and his band Roachford 30 years ago and kept in contact on and off over the years. “I had wanted to see them perform in Plymouth and in 2014 I decided to try and bring them to Plymouth and arrange a gig myself,” said Brian. “I was delighted when Andrew and the band agreed and fitted in a gig as the last date of their tour in 2014 - which was pretty surprising for an artist and band of their stature. “I said at the time them that I would be be happy to do the same again and they agreed as they enjoyed coming to Plymouth. Now they decided to kick off their European tour and album Launch on February 26 at The Hub.” Andrew will launch his stunning new album ‘Encore’ at the event. The powerfully emotive and soulful album brilliantly showcases his unique song interpretation of some classic tracks and brings a fresh take in a way only he can. The past three years have seen Andrew co-writing and

touring with Mike and the Mechanics while also enjoying film success by the way of having his song ‘Cuddly Toy’ placed in the movie Alpha Papa. Ever since bulldozing his way onto the scene in the late 80s, Andrew Roachford’s maverick take on music has spread far and wide. As the first artist to sign a staggering sevenalbum deal with Columbia Records, it heralded the beginning of something big. “Getting signed and being a black British artist gave me a sense of pride” enthused Andrew. Andrew was Columbia’s biggest selling domestic act for over ten years. As if any more proof were needed, the fact that Andrew Roachford has been approached by such luminaries as Michael Jackson and Chaka Khan to write songs, speaks volumes. Brian added: “I set this up as a fan as it’s about bringing a fantastic soul, pop and rock artist to the city for everyone to enjoy – including myself! “You will find it hard to see a better artist performing anywhere in the city this year, that includes Rod Stewart, Elton John or anyone at MTV Crashes Plymouth. He is that good!”

Historic Transat yacht race returns to Plymouth The world famous Transat single-handed yacht race returns to Plymouth this year. The Transat is the oldest single-handed race in history and more than 20 boats are expected to take part. Among the skippers taking part are two women. Last held in 2008, the sailors will race for nearly two weeks across the Atlantic in the unique offshore race, finishing in Brooklyn New York. Boats taking part will start to arrive in Plymouth from April 24 ahead of the race start in Plymouth Sound on May 2. Thousands of spectators are expected to gather on The Hoe and around the waterfront to watch the spectacular start. Plymouth fought off competition from other cities to land the prestigious event. OC Sport, as rights-holders of The Transat, organised the races in 2004 and 2008. Hervé Favre, offshore sailing events director of OC Sport said: “We were delighted to receive several good bids to host the start of the Transat in 2016. “The Plymouth City Council bid was extremely strong and we’re very much looking forward to working with Plymouth again. We are especially pleased that not only will Plymouth ensure the infrastructure and support required to host a race of this stature will be in place, but that they are also committed to ensuring this race is an event for the people of Plymouth and its visitors.”

Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re over the moon that OC Sport has selected Plymouth as the host venue for The Transat in 2016. Businesses in the city have rallied to support our bid and we’re looking forward to staging a spectacular and memorable event in the race’s historic home.” “We’ll be working to create a real regatta feel for the event and enlivening the Hoe, Barbican and Sutton Harbour with music, entertainment and much more for sailing enthusiasts, families and visitors to enjoy.” A brand new Ocean City Rhythm, Blues & Jazz Festival, as well as an air show and fireworks display, will take place on Plymouth’s waterfront during this time. Chris Arscott, Chairman of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Business Improvement District, said: ‚“Our private sector voice working alongside the City Council within the bid has worked brilliantly to secure the Transat for Plymouth. “We”re thrilled businesses across the waterfront will benefit greatly from the extra visitors these events are sure to attract and it presents yet another major accolade to reinforce Britain’s Ocean City’s position as a leading UK destination. The 2,800-mile race across the North Atlantic is renowned for wild storms and tough upwind conditions, icebergs and freezing fog in the final part, and can take between 8-19 days for all the boats to finish. Artist Claire Pentecost refashions soil into the shape of gold ingots to reflect its true worth

Exhibition features work of international artists An exhibition at the Peninsula Arts Gallery in the Roland Levinsky Building is featuring the work of six of the most established international artists who have engaged with soil. Soil Culture: Deep Roots presents a series of works ranging from previously unseen work by Mel Chin, who uses plants to extract heavy metals from contaminated land, to that of Claire Pentecost who has refashioned soil into the shape of gold ingots to reflect its true worth. Individual works by seven British artists working with soils today are also shown. The exhibition is the climax of the Soil Culture programme, initiated by the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World in partnership with Falmouth University, to celebrate the UN International Year of Soils. Artists are Paolo Barrile, Mel Chin, Herman de Vries, Richard Long, Ana Mendieta and Claire Pentecost with work by Chris Drury, Andy Goldsworthy, Sandra Masterson, Daro Montag, David Nash, Peter Ward and Adam White. The ‘Big in Plymouth’ show takes place at the Plymouth Athenaeum on Friday February 4, with doors opening at 7pm and show starting at 8pm. Ever since Plymouth Comedy Club’s first show in 2011, two things have been consistent. One has been the steady stream of top comedians lining up to bring the laughter. The other has been the warm, welcoming and witty presence of resident compere Chris Brooker. A world travelled comedian in his own right, Chris has been a steady fixture on the UK comedy circuit for more than a decade. Mixing off-beat humour and observations with true stories, his unique combination of killer material and off the cuff improvisation will make for a fantastic night’s entertainment. This full length solo show will feature an extended set by Chris as well as a top class support act. This huge, one night only event will also mark the beginning of Plymouth Comedy Club’s 2016 season at their brand new home in the glorious Plymouth Athenaeum with many more top quality line ups to come.

BUSINESS MATTERS Sally Edgcumbe (centre) picured with Helen Smith and Charlotte Smith at H Watts Florists

The florist shop that’s smelling of roses - after 64 years! It’s all hands to the pumps for the 10-strong team at H Watts Florist, as they get set for the busiest time of the year, which will see them opening up for last minute buyers on both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Daffodils, roses, hyacinths, tulips, chrysanthemums and lilies pack every corner of the cold room at the florist’s, which has been operating from its premises in Plymstock Road, Oreston, for over 60 years. With Valentine’s Day (a Sunday) in February and Mother’s Day in March, owners Sally and Neil Edgcumbe and their staff have barely had time to catch their breath since the festive period – and this year has been even busier than usual because the mild midwinter weather means everything is coming out early. Fortunately, Sally, who manages the shop, is accustomed to the unpredictability of nature and it’s one of the challenges that attracted her to floristry in the first place. Sally took over the shop just over two years ago, after working there for 15 years under long-term owner, Tom Burns. It was Tom’s aunt and uncle who established the family firm in 1952 and Tom is still the landlord. “When I was studying floristry at college I always wanted to work at this shop,” said Sally. “It’s always had such a great reputation and I was honoured when Tom asked me to work for him. It’s a privilege to be able to work here.” Sally had been working at a florist’s in Tavistock until moving to Plymouth after getting married and was recommended to Tom by her former employer: “I’ve been a florist for 32 years now,” she said. “I’ve always loved flowers and I’ve never lost that love.”

36\

The Plymouth Magazine February 2016

In an age of pre-wrapped ‘get what you’re given’ bouquets, H Watts Florist is like a breath of fresh air. Quite literally, if you walk into the cold room! The pride and care that Sally obviously takes in her work is shared by her shop staff and the drivers who are tasked with delivering the flowers in pristine order. “There is a uniqueness to what we do that you can’t get from supermarkets,” said Sally. “You could walk into our shop with £2 and we’ll send you out with something pretty. We had a lady in here recently whose friend was getting married but they didn’t have the budget for flowers. She said ‘can you make up some flowers for £15 so my friend has something to hold when she gets married?’ That was lovely. “At the other end of the scale, we did a corporate commission at Christmas for £1,000 and some weddings are £3,000 to £4,000. Because we have the staff and the skills, we are able to do that.” Sally says there’s an art to creating bouquets, especially for weddings and funerals, where they should reflect the personalities of those they’re being made for: “It’s about getting to know the character and choosing the flowers to match. “If you come in and have a chat with us, we’ll tailor the bouquet for you. We all have different styles here and we bounce ideas off each other, so it’s very much a team operation to ensure the customer gets exactly what they want.” The shop orders a lot of the flowers from the Isles of Scilly, from where the daffodils have been arriving for some weeks. The Tamar Valley supplies summer flowers – although sadly not as much as in its floral heyday – and Sally tries as much as possible to buy in locally. Her own favourites are hyacinths at this time of year and stocks and peonies in the summer.

£10.50 From

p (base er hour d on week 2 hours ly)

Sally is in no doubt as to why the shop is still smelling of roses after all these years: “Customer service is everything. We have a lot of return customers from across Plymouth and the South Hams, and some families have been coming here for generations. We get ladies in for their wedding flowers whose mothers and grandmothers ordered their wedding flowers here before them.” Readers won’t be surprised to learn that the biggest seller in February will be roses – “of all colours, but predominantly reds and hot pinks,” according to Sally. “We see more men in February than at any other time of the year! But in general, people still love to say it with flowers.” The shop’s usual opening times are 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Tauck Tours pride themselves on offering exclusive, unique, inclusions on their trips, which are not available to purchase elsewhere, and tonight was no exception. We were transported to one of Vienna’s private palaces, the very grand Palais Pallavicini. On arrival we were greeted by Prince Eduardo himself who gave us a brief insight into the history of the palace, which has remained in his family since the 18th Century. This was a spectacular evening with opera, ballet and fine dining in the magnificent dining room. All too quickly my river cruise came to an end, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The great thing about river cruising is the ‘ all aboard' time can be as late as 10pm. This gives you the opportunity to sample the sights and sounds of your destination at night, enjoy a meal in a local restaurant, or sit in a pavement café and watch the world go by. Another benefit is that local entertainers can come on board and provide an evening of local traditions, dancing and fun. River cruising is a relaxing and luxurious way to discover our beautiful continent and I highly recommend it. There are many companies offering river cruises to suit all budgets. Tauck Tours are at the higher end, however, the inclusions you receive when travelling with Tauck make it exceptional value for money…. • • •

World class shore excursions in every port All gratuities included Unlimited beverages including premium spirits, regional wine, beer and specialty teas and coffees • Exclusive dining ashore, providing a genuine taste of local cuisine • Fewest passengers on any European same sized riverboats • Voted ‘World Best River Cruise Line’ three times in the past four years by readers of Travel & Leisure Please feel free to call in and collect your copy of Tauck River Cruising (you can now advance register for 2017), but if river cruising isn’t for you why not take a look at Tauck's other products, which include tours to exotic worldwide locations, family traps, luxury European coach trips and worldwide cruising on small ships. www.cornerstonevision.com

PLYMOUTH MATTERS

Collaborative initiative putting Plymouth firmly on the digital map... Digital technology is now a big part of everyday life whether it’s at work, at home or at leisure. And it is an increasingly important part of the business life of Plymouth. Five local companies working in the digital industry have joined forces to launch Digital Plymouth - a collaboration designed to ‘connect Plymouth’s digital community.’ Award-winning Elixel, Sonic DC, Plymouth Cowork, Tin Digital and Thinq Tanq last year launched the first of a series of events for people working in the digital industry. It was an immediate success and now the meet ups - which are free - are held on a quarterly basis with three guests speakers. Garry Hunt, who founded his web design business Sonic DC three years ago, said: “The intention is to bring together the diverse and talented community of digital businesses and organisations and enable them to recognise and celebrate how many of us there are. “In addition, by coming together, we can share knowledge and learn about the amazing things that are being created right here in Plymouth. “We had 30 people at our first meet up, more than 50 at the second and nearly 100 at the third. It highlights just how many people are involved in this industry in Plymouth.” Paul Bird, a director of Elixel said: “We want Plymouth to be recognised and respected for the quality and breadth of its digital capabilities. We want to retain the talented young graduates leaving the university and art college and demonstrate that they don’t have to move to Bristol or London to establish a career in the digital industry. “We want local companies who are looking for web design, app development, videography, e-commerce, e-learning, social media marketing, branding and so on to do business in Plymouth and not look elsewhere.” Talking about the creation of Digital Plymouth Garry said: “I was previously digital channels manager for EE and when I was

40\

made redundant I decided to set up my own website business, having learned web design at the age of 16. I met up with the guys from Thinq Tanq - who run a hub for creatives in the city centre - and quickly realised there were a lot of people like me running their own businesses, often from home-based offices. “I then was introduced to the team at Elixel and discovered that they had the same vision to connect the digital community. We then connected with Rob at Thinq Tanq, Mike at Tin Digital and Sabrina from Plymouth Cowork, and from that we developed the concept of Digital Plymouth.” Paul said: “Things have moved very rapidly and we have been delighted with the response to our meet ups. We are now planning a two-day event in the first week of June and Plymouth College of Art are partnering with us in the venture. “We have also secured sponsorship from Sponge UK , the highly successful Plymouth-based e-learning business and also Signs Express. “Plymouth City Council have also been very supportive of what we are doing as they clearly recognise the huge potential the digital industry has in Plymouth. Collaborating... Garry Hunt of Sonic DC (left), Paul Bird “The current plan is for the first of Elixel and Sabrina Simpson of Plymouth Cowork. The day of the conference to feature photo was taken at Thinq Tanq which provides hub space at least 12 speakers from various for creatives, entrepreneurs and techies in Higher Lane sectors of the technology industry, Plymouth followed on the second day by a series of workshops on a range of digital subjects.” Their next meet-up is on Thursday March 3 at The Loft at Vauxhall Quay in Sutton Harbour starting at 6.30pm. and continuing until closing time. Paul said: “People can arrive from 6.30pm, grab a drink and then the talks start at 7pm. We will have three speakers, each on for around 15 minutes, which then leaves plenty of time for questions, discussions, socialising and networking. “It’s all entirely free and we would love to see new people coming along.” Digital Plymouth has its own website which can be found at www.digitalplymouth.com and is also on Facebook and Twitter.

KF Kitchens help couple to create the home of their dreams An Ivybridge couple are enjoying life in their bungalow home - thanks to the team at KF Kitchens. Retired company director Will Palmer and his wife Maureen - better known as Mo - originally moved to Ivybridge three years ago to be nearer their daughter and her family. “We couldn’t find a bungalow then and ended up buying a house,” said Will, “but when the bungalow in Woodland Road came onto the market last year we felt it was the right one for us.” However, it was anything but a dream home - more of a nightmare. Will said: “It needed a lot of work, especially the kitchen which was old-fashioned and needed complete modernisation. Ceilings were artexed and there were artificial beams made of polystyrene. “I have fitted kitchens in the past, but

there was far too much work to do on the bungalow. We knew all about KF Kitchens because they installed a new kitchen at the house we purchased in 2011. “We had no hesitation in asking KF Kitchens to carry out the work on the bungalow,” said Will. “They had done a superb job at the first house and we were totally confident about their ability to carry out all the work on the bungalow.” The work involved knocking down a wall to create an open plan kitchen and dining area, creating an opening in the wall between the kitchen and lounge, new ceilings, plastering, plumbing, decorating, electrical work and flooring. “KF Kitchens have a great team of professional trades people and the way they work together and co-ordinate the job takes all of the stress and pressure away,” said Will. “The whole project was overseen and

project managed by Nathan and the team at KF Kitchens and we are delighted with the end result,” he added. The couple chose a contemporary style kitchen with Kashmere coloured doors and draws, matching Silestone quartz countertops and a range of NEFF appliances, including built-in oven, hob, microwave, warming drawer, washing machine and dishwasher. Attractive Karndean flooring complements the stunning new kitchen. Mo said: “We stayed in a hotel for three weeks while the work was undertaken so that the KF Kitchens team could get on with the work. Will was on site most of the time to liaise with the various specialists and we were soon able to enjoy our magnificent new home.” Nathan Damarell of KF Kitchens said: “There was a lot of work to do, but it was all really straightforward for our team. They

have all worked together for several years and Will and Mo knew them well from the the work they did at their first home in Ivybridge.” Will added: “We cannot recommend KF Kitchens highly enough. Their professionalism, quality of workmanship, attention to detail and experience is second to none.”

Susie was taken along to a Zumba class at Eggbuckland Community College by her sister-in-law Nicola and loved it so much she became a regular at the twice weekly sessions. Then, when one of the Plymouth instructors left, they approached Susie: “Claire Batten, who runs the Zumba Plymouth team said ‘we’re looking for someone to join the team – would you be interested in becoming an instructor? We think you’d be really good’. I was shocked, to be honest!” Never one to turn down a challenge, Susie said ‘yes’ and February marks the 2nd anniversary of her first class: “I went away and did the Zumba course and then I worked alongside Claire for two months before I started to teach my own classes.” Susie leads two classes a week at the Eggbuckland Community College gym and drama studio, 6.30-7.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and has 20-25 regulars. So what is it about Zumba that got her hooked? “I remember that first class that Nicola took me to,” said Susie. “I thought ‘oh, this is good fun’. No-one judges you if you don’t do the right steps; you get to dance to some great tracks; and it’s very sociable.” Zumba is suitable for all ages – a grandmother and granddaughter came to a class together recently – and for all levels: “You can do as much as you want,” said Susie. “We start off with a warm-up and build up to high impact tracks. Then we have a ‘breather’ track where we

Susie in ‘professional mode’

take things back down again before some more high impact tracks and finally, a warm-down and stretch. “You can do a low impact routine to the high impact tracks if you prefer. You decide, basically. “A whole variety of people come along, from teenagers to women in their 60s,” she added. “Some are coming back into fitness after a period away from exercise, some come along as part of their weight loss regime, and others just like dancing to good music. It’s a great all-over workout without you actually realising it.” Before teaching her class the movements, Susie has to learn them herself. This is where her juggling skills come in handy because during the day, she works full time as HR advisor at Plessey in Roborough: “I put the tracks on in the front room and learn the movements. Thankfully, my husband (Jonathan Morcom, director of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel) is very tolerant!” Susie interprets the choreography so that it’s easy to follow, whatever your level: “I like people to come along knowing they’re able to participate and not worry that they won’t be able to keep up,” she said. Zumba provide Susie with new tracks every month. Among the ones recently introduced are Black Betty by Ram Jam, Holiday by Madonna, and Part Time Lover by Stevie Wonder. “I mix things around so that the tracks and routines on Thursdays are different to Tuesdays,” said Susie. Each newcomer goes through a brief fitness assessment with Susie, and the usual rule of thumb is to take the lesson at a pace and level you’re comfortable with. People can also give themselves a little break during the session if they want: “Zumba is very fluid, you’re constantly moving,” said Susie, “so if you want to sit out a track, that’s fine.” Since the return to classes after the Christmas and New Year break, Susie has noticed a real determination among her regulars to get back into the groove. And she says this is a great time of the year to start Zumba if you’ve never tried it before. As Susie celebrates her 2nd anniversary as an instructor, she says she gets as much out of it as her class: “I’m glad I said ‘yes’ to becoming an instructor because I really enjoy it, it’s such great fun. I feel as though I’m one of the class, dancing along to lots of good tunes with everyone. “And the feedback I’ve had from my regulars has been lovely. Some have been with me since my very first class, which is fantastic.” Prices are £4 per class, with blocks of 10 classes £30. Students pay £3 per class. There’s no need to book – just come along. Contact Susie for more information about classes or visit the Fitness Plymouth Facebook page for updates.

If you thought facilities like this would be out of your league, then think again, because membership at the centre starts at £31 a month and pay-as-you go means you and your family – or sports team – can get full use of what Marjon has to offer at affordable prices. And, to help you get into shape, the centre has introduced a six-week membership offer for just £45 for a limited period. One person who’s already benefited from regular sessions at the centre is Kerry Young. Kerry, 44, has dropped from 15st 4lb to 9st 2lb since joining: “My whole lifestyle has changed,” she said. “I started off doing Aquafit because I was too embarrassed to use the gym. “But the staff are wonderful and they encouraged me. So I started doing classes in the gym – group cycle, body combat and Pilates. As I lost more weight, I gained in confidence. I’d say to people ‘don’t be nervous about joining – everyone is very welcoming here’.” Sports Centre manager Simon White says Kerry is an inspiration: “Kerry is a great example of what can be achieved,” he said. “Whatever your health and fitness goals, or if you just want to get involved in activities, we’ve got all the facilities in one place. “People are more than welcome to come and have a chat with us and view the facilities,” he added. The revamped centre, also used by the University of St Mark & St John’s sport students, was a key part of Marjon’s £20 million refurbishment in 2010. Plymouth Magazine was given a tour of the sports centre by Marjon Director of Sport, Stan Cinnamond. Stan has been in the post since 2007 and has overseen the transformation. The result, he says, is something the whole of Plymouth can be proud of: “We have a centre of excellence and a community sports centre,

all in one,” he said. “We work closely with a wide range of organisations to assist with the development of sport in the city, including Plymouth City Council. “One of the reasons we have such world class facilities is because of the sports related degrees we do and it permits us to open them up to the public. It’s a tremendous asset.” First up on our tour is the centre’s impressive 90-station fitness suite. It has everything you’d need for your health and fitness regime, with qualified staff on hand to help. The five lane 25m swimming pool has a dedicated lane for medium/fast swimmers. The pool is 0.9m at the shallow end and 1.8m at the deep end. The changing facilities include a family changing area and children are welcome, with guidelines – visit the website for information. The swimming timetable also includes adults-only sessions. Swimming lessons can be booked and there are facilities for people with disabilities to use the pool. The large indoor sports hall can be divided into thirds with each third marked out for badminton courts, netball court, basketball court, five-a-side football, and a volleyball court. The whole space is suitable for almost any indoor sport you can think of. As well as gymnastics, the wooden sprung floor gymnasium can be used for all sorts of activities, including dance, fitness classes and martial arts. The centre also has an 8m-high climbing wall which can be booked by individuals, clubs, groups and businesses.

Outside, there are all-weather pitches – including a fullsize 3G pitch for football and rugby. Five-a-side football is also hugely popular here. Among those who make use of the outdoor pitches are Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Argyle, who were training on the day of our visit. A second pitch is used for hockey and Lacrosse and there are also tennis courts. The synthetic grass outdoor pitches have floodlights and the 3G pitch can be viewed from the centre’s spacious café. There is no joining fee or annual contract. Gym and swim membership is £31 a month and includes unlimited use of the fitness suite and swimming pool and a car park permit. Gym, swim and group classes membership is £41 a month. Pay-asyou-go starts at £4 for swimming (£2.90 for children aged 5-15; £3 for over 60s and disabled), and £5 for the fitness suite. Opening times are 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm at weekends. The £3 parking charge is refunded to sports centre users. For information on personal training sessions, children’s activities and swimming lessons, and on booking courts and pitches, visit the website.

CHARITY MATTERS

Harrison honoured for charity work in South Africa A Plymouth man who has been devoted to helping vulnerable and traumatised children in South Africa for the last eight years has been recognised with a national honour. Harrison Nash, aged 27, has been selected to receive a British Citizen Award (BCA) for his services to international achievement. Now entering their second year, the British Citizen Awards in partnership with InMoment, were launched in January 2015 to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and

selflessly to make a positive impact on society. BCAs are awarded twice annually, and recognise ‘everyday’ people whose achievements may otherwise be overlooked. Harrison established the charity Maranatha Care Children, which aims to help South African children by offering development in education, and life skills, providing suitable home environments and safeguarding the future of those in care. It all began when he was 18 after finishing school at Devonport High School for Boys. He began working to save up for a volunteering trip to South Africa, where he eventually spent four months in

Port Elizabeth, giving classes to up to 50 children a day. “I first visited South Africa when I was 18 years old, as I had seen a lot about the hardship in Africa and I wanted to do something to help. I decided it was the right time to visit before I had planned to go to university and start a career in marketing, as I felt I needed to go and do something worthwhile. My first experience in South Africa made me realise that I wanted to make a bigger difference than just one visit.” During his time there, a local youth project quickly became very close to his heart. Siyakatala Child and Youth Care Centre caters for children and young people, aged 5 to 20 years old, in full time residential care. Harrison spent every afternoon and weekend at the centre, assisting in various activities, helping with school work and organising birthday parties to help the kids feel special. One young boy at the centre was unable to celebrate his birthday due to the fact his birthday was unknown from a lack of identification documents. Harrison took this opportunity to share his birthday with the young boy, helping him foster his sense of identity. Despite a marketing degree waiting for him at Goldsmiths University in London, Harrison couldn’t deny his love for South Africa. Cancelling his university place and working for six months to save, Harrison soon found himself back in his beloved country for another six months. He continued to teach at the primary school, but still spent his afternoons, evenings and weekends with the children at Siyakatala. That year, he spent Christmas with the children, organising a barbecue and sponsoring all the gifts for all of the children. During this time, Harrison decided to ignore his marketing ambitions and go with his heart, and began pursuing a degree in Social Work at the University of Plymouth, hoping to qualify as a social worker on graduating. During this time he continued to work with charities far and wide, whilst still visiting South Africa a total of six times during his degree. He began using therapeutic methods to help the children in care at Siyakatala, whilst still teaching and addressing the needs of those at the Protea Primary School. In 2009, during his studies, Harrison began to identify the

Create a hasslefree outdoor space and enjoy living life outside to the full

As well as the usual winter tidying jobs to do, it’s worth looking at some of the products which can help you spend more time outdoors and keep your garden looking good. An artificial grass lawn provides a fantastic all weather surface all year round. During wet spells, instead of stopping the children and pets from going out on to the muddy grass, an artificial lawn will let them get outside whatever the weather. The latest generation of landscaping grasses contain a mix of green shades and brown root mass for an authentic natural look. There’s no mowing, edging or weeding to think about and with clever border planting to soften the edges and link to the space beyond, your new artificial lawn will be virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

huge need for fundraising support for South African children in residential care. Often overlooked, Harrison took matters into his own hands and founded the charity Maranatha Care Children, which offers development in education and life skills, providing a suitable home environment as well as safeguarding their futures in the care system. To complete this mammoth task, Harrison had to raise approximately £60,000 through a variety of fundraising activities. “I noticed there was a big need for funding for children in care so I set up the Maranatha Care Children charity. Even just a small amount of funds can go a very long way in South Africa, especially compared to at home in the UK. The charity is doing extremely well and we have raised so much money.” Harrison has since moved to South Africa, continuing to help traumatised and vulnerable children through volunteer work and dedicated therapy. He’s made a direct impact on the lives of so many children, yet didn’t know how to react on the news of his nomination and win of the British Citizen Award. “It came as a big surprise when I found out I was being nominated, and an even bigger surprise when I found out I would actually be receiving an award. There are so many deserving people doing incredible international work, so I never expected to be chosen.” Harrison was nominated for the BCA by his aunt, Helen Soliman, who said: “Harrison is the most selfless person I have ever met. For the last eight years he has given everything he can for the children and he works extremely hard. Harrison will buy Christmas presents for the children, and asks all of us not to buy presents for himself but to donate towards the charity instead. He just always thinks of others.”

GARDENING MATTERS

There’s plenty of work to garden before the arrival By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre February is the last month of ‘quiet’ we have in the garden before everything takes off like a rocket from March onwards, so it is a great month to get out there and keep on top of the maintenance side of things before it’s too late to in the spring. It is also a great month for planning and to reflect on what worked well in the garden and what didn’t. It’s a great time to plan ahead and design the layout of bed, borders, pots and hanging baskets, before everything gets going. Think about which plants flourished and where, and either plant more of the same or similar or plants that like the same growing conditions beside them to fill out that area. You can never go wrong with the mantra ‘right plant, right place’. There is no point trying to force a plant to grow in an area where it’s not happy. It will simply fail. On that note, before they start into growth, move the plants that didn’t perform as expected or struggled, to areas more suited to their growing requirements and see if they improve this year. There are many plants in the garden that will benefit greatly from being pruned or given a tidy up at this time of year. It’s the perfect time to prune Wisteria side-shoots back to two or three buds. That will encourage those buds to swell into flowers rather than more leafy growth. Give Cornus and Salix that are grown for their colourful winter stems down to 15cm (6ins) from the ground. Don’t prune any Salix grown for their catkins, until the catkins have gone over. Prune overwintered fuchsias in the greenhouse back to one or two buds on each shoot, if threat of frost has passed, hardy fuchsias can be cut back to 3045cm (12-18ins), although this can be saved until March if it is cold. Cut back winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia and Viburnum x Bodnantense after their colourful display has finished to keep their growth compact and bushy. Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy. Winter Flowering Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) benefits well from a hard pruning after flowering to encourage new growth for next year’s blooms.

48\

The Plymouth Magazine February 2016

Prune the previous year’s growth to 5cm from the old wood. Towards the end of the month prune summer flowering Clematis lightly before active growth, removing dead or damaged stems and cutting back by a third. Late flowering clematis can be cut back hard to the first or second pair of buds above the ground, roughly 20cm (8ins). Trim the old foliage from ornamental, deciduous grasses before growth begins in the spring. Cut them to within a few centimetres off the ground. It is also a good idea to trim back deciduous hedges and thick climbers and vines such as Ivy and Virginia Creeper before birds start to nest in it. This keeps them tidy and won’t disturb the birds in spring. Other jobs that will need doing will be dead heading any faded flowers from your winter bedding to stop those setting seed. This will encourage a flush of new flowers when the weather warms up. If you want to move them or create more plants, lift and divide snowdrops where the flowers have gone over. This is referred to as ‘in the green’. This method allows the bulbs to establish themselves much quicker and more effectively. If you have a vegetable or fruit patch, then there are a few jobs that could be done on those to get them ready for spring. Plant some rhubarb plants or crowns in fertile ground, mulch with well-rotted manure and force rhubarb plants for an early crop. Forcing is simply a method of covering the rhubarb crown with a rhubarb forcer. This keeps the rhubarb in darkness, which causes the rhubarb to produce new, succulent stems earlier than normal. Perennial vegetables such as asparagus and artichokes will need mulching with well-rotted manure or garden compost, to give them a boost for spring. Whilst mulching those, start to prepare the beds for growing potatoes in. Fertilise well by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure, compost and fish, blood and bone for the best growing conditions. Start chitting your early potatoes. Stand them on end in a module tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place, such as a window sill.

57 Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks, onions and celeriac under cover now. Whilst they are germinating, prepare your vegetable seed beds by removing all weeds and forking in plenty of compost. Cover prepared soil with sheets of black plastic to keep it drier and warmer in preparation for spring planting. Prune your autumn fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to help produce new canes that will produce fruit in the autumn. Trim the tips of summer fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports to just above a bud. There is still time to plant raspberry canes for the coming summer and autumn. When selecting your raspberry canes, look for healthy plump buds and scrape some bark away with your finger nail, if it is green underneath, they are still alive and healthy, if it is brown, avoid them. Prune apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Trim about a third of the overall growth off, cut out any dead, diseased or over lapping branches and prune any long wispy growth to just about a fat, stout bud. Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to Silver Leaf disease. Trim your blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework, clear the centre of the bushes so that the basic shape of the bush is goblet shaped. This allows plenty of air flow through the bushes, reducing the chances of disease and allows plenty of light to help ripen fruit. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring. Check the weather for frost and protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. If it is cold and no pollinating insects are present, then you may need to hand pollinate with a paintbrush to get a crop. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now.
