Plymouth is ‘the new powerhouse’ Over the last few months I have been highlighting some of the exciting developments that will be taking place in Plymouth in the months and years ahead.

The city is set fair for a period of sustained growth and I reckon that’s good news for all of us living here in the capital of the South West. Not everyone agrees, however, and I have received one or two letters from local people who don’t agree that Plymouth is on the up. Well, now it’s official. According to new research Plymouth’s economy is outperforming the rest of the UK and average pay is now higher than those in Exeter, Torbay and Devon as a whole. It led to a front page banner headline on a recent edition of the Herald ‘We’re the new powerhouse.’ To add to the growing confidence in Plymouth, the city council has just announced an £80 million plan for 5,000 new homes in the city over the next five years, which will create an estimated 2,000 construction jobs and address some of the issues regarding housing shortages in the city. And the council is also forecasting that it will deliver over 22,000 new homes over the next 15 years. Ironically, all this positive news comes at a time when there is a chronic shortage of skilled workers in the local construction industry. We have an interview in this issue with Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouth-based Skills Group who highlights some of the positive steps that are being taken locally to address the issue. Elsewhere in this edition we highlight once again some of the talented people who are making a name for themselves in their chosen field of expertise. They include artist Rita Smith, who has had one of her works shortlisted for a top prize. You can read her story on page 48. Hope you enjoy the latest issue.

KF Kitchens help couple to create the home of their dreams An Ivybridge couple are enjoying life in their bungalow home - thanks to the team at KF Kitchens. Retired company director Will Palmer and his wife Maureen - better known as Mo - originally moved to Ivybridge three years ago to be nearer their daughter and her family. “We couldn’t find a bungalow then and ended up buying a house,” said Will, “but when the bungalow in Woodland Road came onto the market last year we felt it was the right one for us.” However, it was anything but a dream home - more of a nightmare. Will said: “It needed a lot of work, especially the kitchen which was old-fashioned and needed complete modernisation. Ceilings were artexed and there were artificial beams made of polystyrene. “I have fitted kitchens in the past, but there was far too much work to do on the bungalow. We knew all about KF Kitchens because they installed a new kitchen at the house we purchased in 2011. “We had no hesitation in asking KF Kitchens to carry out the work on the bungalow,” said Will. “They had done a superb job at the first house and we were totally confident about their ability to carry out all the work on the bungalow.” The work involved knocking down a wall to create an open plan kitchen and dining area, creating an opening in the wall between the kitchen and lounge, new ceilings, plastering, plumbing, decorating, electrical work

and flooring. “KF Kitchens have a great team of professional trades people and the way they work together and co-ordinate the job takes all of the stress and pressure away,” said Will. “The whole project was overseen and project managed by Nathan and the team at KF Kitchens and we are delighted with the end result,” he added. The couple chose a contemporary style kitchen with Kashmere coloured doors and draws, matching Silestone quartz countertops and a range of NEFF appliances, including built-in oven, hob, microwave, warming drawer, washing machine and dishwasher. Attractive Karndean flooring complements the stunning new kitchen. Mo said: “We stayed in a hotel for three weeks while the work was undertaken so that the KF Kitchens team could get on with the work. Will was on site most of the time to liaise with the various specialists and we were soon able to enjoy our magnificent new home.” Nathan Damarell of KF Kitchens said: “There was a lot of work to do, but it was all really straightforward for our team. They have all worked together for several years and Will and Mo knew them well from the the work they did at their first home in Ivybridge.” Will added: “We cannot recommend KF Kitchens highly enough. Their professionalism, quality of workmanship, attention to detail and experience is second to none.”

BUSINESS MATTERS

Halo gets a makeover Julie Wotton (centre right) and Sarah Jury (centre left) with members of the Halo Hairdressing team

Seven years ago Julie Wotton and Sarah Jury stepped in to save several jobs when a Crownhill hairdressing salon faced closure. Snips in Crownhill Village was one of a group of salons operated by Plymouth and South West Co-op which was due to be axed in 2009. But Julie, who was the manager of Snips and colleague Sarah stepped in to acquire the lease and goodwill of the business. They named the new enterprise Halo Hairdressing and under their direction the salon has gone from strength to strength - recently undergoing an extensive makeover of its own. Remarkably all the stylists who joined Halo when it was launched are still working there today. Mother of three Julie said: “It is very unusual for a salon to retain all its stylists for such a long period - but it just highlights how close we are as a team. “We have established an excellent reputation and now benefit from a very loyal and growing customer base,” she added. “We decided late last year that the salon would benefit from a freshen up, but what started as a modest plan quickly developed into a full-blown refurbishment. “Pretty much every aspect of the salon has been updated

8\

with a new ceiling, new lighting, new chairs and basins and even new speakers for our sound system. “The salon was closed for a week in January while the work was completed and we are all delighted with how brilliant it is now,” said Julie. The salon boasts five hairdressing stations downstairs and three upstairs and all the stylists are kept busy with a steady flow of regular and new customers. In addition to Julie and Sarah, the team consists of stylists Liz Frettsome, Cheryl Lethbridge, Sarah (Jo) Donaldson and Sarah Hunt (who is currently on maternity leave. Former apprentice Emily Russell has recently joined Halo Hairdressing as a junior stylist and is quickly developing her skills under the expert supervision of the rest of the members of the team. “Customers who would like Emily to style their hair can benefit from a substantial discount at the moment,” said Julie. The salon is open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 5pm (6.30pm on Thursdays).

BUSINESS MATTERS Ben Aslett and Abigail McKenzie of Dearly Beloved Photo: Dom Moore

Wedding designs that are made just for you! You’re organising your big day and the search begins for your all-important wedding stationery. It’s got to be just right, a reflection of your personalities and a perfect match for the day you’ve got planned. You certainly don’t want the ‘same old, same old’ ... where’s the personality in that? The question is: where can you find the wedding design that fits YOU? We think we may have found the answer and their names are Abigail McKenzie and Ben Aslett. The talented illustrators launched their Dearly Beloved bespoke stationery and wedding design business just over a year ago after Abigail kept being asked to come to the rescue of couples who couldn’t find anything that was “them” in the shops or online. “I think at first it was because of the particular style of my illustrations that people thought it would be perfect for their wedding stationery. It all grew from that really and now here we are in our studio on the Barbican.” Abigail and Ben met while they were doing their Illustration degrees at Plymouth University. After graduating in 2009, Ben became a graphic designer and illustrator while Abigail initially worked as a teacher of illustration at Plymouth College of Art. But when she noticed she was being asked to do more and more wedding commissions, she and Ben decided to launch Dearly Beloved. That was in January last year. Since then they’ve helped couples across the world – literally – to create just the vision they want for their wedding. Abigail and Ben work with couples to provide wedding

10\

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

stationery that’s fun, whimsical and individualistic. They can even incorporate quirky illustrations of the couple into the designs or have a theme based on the wedding location: “We’re providing the stationery for a couple who are getting married in Torquay and it has our own unique interpretation of Torquay in the design,” said Abigail. “And we’ve done them so that the invites have a daytime scene for those attending the ceremony and a night-time scene with a starry sky for evening guests.” Abigail says that some couples don’t actually know what sort of theme they want for their wedding stationery but by the end of the initial free discussion, a vision usually emerges: “We have a chat and from that we can come up with a style that’s uniquely their own. We ask to see some photos and song lyrics, things that give us a nice picture of the personalities so we can get these across in all the designs. “One of the things that I really hold on to is a comment from a couple who said that we helped them to create their vision and we didn’t impose it on them. That’s really important to us.” Abigail and Ben can design every element of wedding stationery, from ‘Save the Date’ cards to menu and table plans. They can also design personalised bunting and wedding favours. All the stationery is printed by Bretonside Copy, which is just yards away from Ben and Abigail’s studio in Southside Street. Abigail said: “When you think of it, the ‘Save the Date’ cards are the first little glimpse as to what the day itself is going to be like. So if a card drops through your letter box with a beach theme, for example, it starts you wondering about the location doesn’t it? It’s nice to give out a little hint.”

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR ANNUAL FOOT HEALTH CHECK?

Seniors Day Every Tuesday 10am to 2pm Among the customers who’ve turned to them are a couple in New York who found Dearly Beloved online: “We spoke to them on Skype and they wanted everything to be done so that it matched the ceremony which was in an amazing loft in Manhattan. They wanted something edgy and fun.” This year promises to be a busy and exciting time, following the launch in February of a new, limited edition ‘collection’ service which can be viewed online. As with the fully bespoke service, all the illustrations in the collections are hand drawn and then printed by Bretonside Copy. The colours and text on each of the collections can be adapted so that it matches customers’ requirements. “Not everyone has the time to go through the complete bespoke process,” explained Abigail, “so this provides a service that’s still bespoke but won’t have the illustrations of the couple for example. We’ll only have six or seven collections so there will still be that different element to it.” Themes include Summer Camp, Tropical, Summer Beach and Birds. And in another new venture, Dearly Beloved have teamed up with Devonport Guildhall. Couples who use the venue for their wedding day will get a 20% discount on the bespoke service: “It’s amazing to be working with them,” said Abigail. “I love the space there. It’s a great venue with lots of personality, which is what we’re all about.” They’re also about fun and Abigail says her job involves plenty of that: “I’m loving it! For me, being a freelance illustrator, working with people to create something they’ll love on probably the biggest day of their lives, is like a dream. And when I look at the photos and see them looking so happy I think ‘in our small way, we’ve played a part in making their day’. That’s amazing!” Visit the Dearly Beloved website or Facebook page to view some examples of bespoke stationery and the new collections.

Chandlers Bar & Bistro - Plymouth waterfront’s unique ‘hidden gem’

Opening times Monday 8am - 4pm Tue, Thur, Fri 7.30am - 4pm Wednesday 7.30am - 1pm Saturday 7:30am - 1pm

You get an idea straight away that this isn’t like anywhere else you’ve ever been before. Outside, you’ll come across a display of vintage outboard motors on the terrace and inside, there are quirky bits of nautical memorabilia everywhere. The highly individualistic ambience is a reflection of the owners, Stuart and Samantha James, who are celebrating 20 years at the helm here. Both are Plymouth-born and between them they have 60 years in the local hospitality trade. Chandlers is very much a husband and wife team operation, with Samantha heading up the kitchen and Stuart taking care of things front of house.

FOOD MATTERS Stuart James of Chandlers Bar & Bistro

Offering something just that little bit different is one of the big factors behind their continued success. Even the coffee is unique as they import the beans and roast them to create their own range of Chandlers’ coffees. “One of the changes we’ve seen over the years is the development of the café culture,” explained Stuart. “We were very quick off the mark to install a Barista style coffee machine right at the start of it all. Then we decided we wanted to take it one step further. “We’ve travelled to places like Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya and Jamaica to source our coffee beans which we import through Southampton and roast at our own roasting station. There aren’t many other places in the country that are doing this and it’s an example of how we like to offer our customers something they won’t get anywhere else. The moment you come in, you’ll have a very individual experience.” There are talking points everywhere you look. Each table is individually oil-painted and sealed, depicting Plymouth’s maritime heritage and paintings on the walls also tell the city’s seafaring history. Nooks and crannies are filled with memorabilia, including items discarded from the Royal Yacht Britannia after its refit in Plymouth. The outboard motors are the latest arrivals, all part of the terrace makeover which has been happening this winter. The spacious terrace now has two distinct spaces: a dining area and The Outboard Deck, a new informal area where customers can enjoy a waterside drink. • Continued on next page

“We offer a high quality, yet relaxed, casual dining experience,” said Stuart. “So people can enjoy a three course meal or, in the summer, they can sit in the sun in their shorts and have tapas and a glass of wine.” Chandlers is open 10am to 11pm and offers a range of British and international cuisine. All food is cooked on-site by the Chandlers kitchen team, including their extremely popular burgers with fresh herbs and spices. Lighter bites include freshly made soup, olives in Chandlers’ own marinades, sandwiches, salads and tapas, while the house menu has a range of fish, meat and veggie main dishes from £8 to £12. Specials change two or three times a week and depends which produce is in season. When we visited, Trio of Barbican Crab Cakes with delicious dips was on the menu, together with Posh Fish and Chips – locally landed cod in Tribute ale batter, with thick cut chips using Tamar Valley potatoes, and minted peas. Many of the dishes are influenced by the places Stuart and Samantha have visited. Stuart is a regular visitor to the States, which is where the burger combos originate, while Far Eastern flavours are also in evidence in dishes such as coconut shrimp and Japanese breaded prawns. Caribbean chicken stir fry with mango, banana and white rice is Jamaican influenced, with a British twist. The other side of the Chandlers business is outside catering, which has come in handy on many occasions in recent years: “The Royal Western Yacht Club is next door and we’ve hosted the America’s Cup, the Fastnet Race and Formula 1 speedboat racing. It’s the perfect setting for events,” said Stuart. He’s not wrong. From outside, you can look across to the Barbican, the Citadel and the Sound. It’s also a great spot for watching the annual British Fireworks Championships. “We’re like a hidden jewel in the town,” said Stuart. “And we’re very lucky that we’re in such a great location.” On foot, Queen Anne’s Battery is accessible from the Barbican via the bridge to the National Marine Aquarium. For people arriving by car, there is a large, free car park.

WHAT’S ON

Talented young Hungarian pianist performs with Plymouth Symphony Orchestra Talented young Hungarian pianist Daniel Lebhardt is the soloist in the forthcoming Plymouth Symphony Orchestra concert at the Guildhall, Plymouth. He will be playing Rachmaninov’s hugely popular and highly acclaimed 2nd Piano Concerto at the concert on Wednesday March 16 at 7.30pm. In 2014 Daniel won first prize at the Young Concert Artists and was selected by the Young Classical Artists Trust, making his debut at Wigmore Hall supported by the Royal Academy of Music’s Patron’s Award. Having premiered his 1st Symphony in Moscow at the age of 24, Rachmaninov was already recognised as a rising young pianist and composer. He composed his 2nd Piano Concerto in 1900 and was the soloist for the first performance in Moscow in 1901. The work is considered by many to be Rachmaninov at his very best and remains one of the most popular in the repertoire. The opening work of the concert is the cheerful and lighthearted Karelia Overture by Sibelius. It features beautiful bold themes as well as references to the better known Intermezzo from the Karelia Suite. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s powerful and expressive musical drama – his Fourth Symphony. Tchaikovsky described this work as ‘one of only a few works with which I have not experienced disappointment… this is my best symphonic work’ and it cemented his growing reputation and established his career.

He himself admitted that his Fourth Symphony was autobiographical: turbulent but finally triumphant; reflecting tribulations in his live as well as eventual recovery. He said that the principal idea of the work was the implacability of fate and the first movement is characterised by the interplay of two dance types – the ‘fate fanfare’ which has the profile of a stately polonaise, associated with nobility, and a waltz, considered to be a lower form of dance, associated with the common people of Russia. The 2nd movement is plaintive and melancholy with the subdued themes being passed around the orchestra. The capricious 3rd movement - a playful pizzicato - provides a little light relief, but this is followed by a powerful, glorious and uninhibited finale, where the ‘fate’ motive of the first movement is heard again and now confronted - but this time successfully overcome - as the music triumphs over oppression. The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is one of the longestestablished orchestras in the country and the present conductor, Anne Kimber, is only the sixth conductor to have taken up the baton in 139 years. The orchestra attracts many distinguished soloists, with Ralph Kirshbaum, Guy Johnston, Tasmin Little, Joanna MacGregor, Jennifer Pike and Guy Johnston amongst the most recent performers to play with the orchestra.

NICK CONTINUES TO PUT A SMILE ON HIS PATIENTS’ FACES Clinical Dental Technician is passionate about putting a smile on people’s faces in Plymouth.

It is over two years since Nick launched his Plymouth clinic to add to his existing clinics in Exeter and Launceston which he opened in 2008. The Launceston clinic was the first of its kind in Cornwall, with Nick the most experienced Clinical Dental Technician in the county. Nick takes great pride in being an honorary lecturer at the city’s Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry where he passes on his denture knowledge and skill to both under graduate and post graduate students. Nick has been making bespoke life like dentures for over 30 years now, his undoubted passion for his profession shows with the hundreds of delighted patients he has treated at each of his clinics. Nick is adamant his patients benefit tremendously from being treated in the clinic by the technician who is actually making their dentures! Dentures supplied by dentists are often made by labs who never have any contact with the patient. Endorsement of this patient focussed experience is shown by the large number of people recommended to Nick by previous happy patients. A true “word of mouth” recommendation. Nick’s continual desire to improve his patients’ denture wearing experience sees him constantly exploring the very latest advanced techniques and precision materials. He comments, “I am so excited about the future for denture wearers”.

The quality of the newest life-like teeth today are amazing they are made to replicate natural enamel in both appearance and their hard wearing surfaces. We have new acrylics where precision engineering injection moulding processes are used to create a much more snug fit for your denture.

Nick is also able to offer the Ultra-suction denture stabilisation system which has been described as the next best thing where dental implants are unsuitable or impractical. The Ultra-suction holds dentures in place by creating pressure differences between the appliance and the gums. Air is expelled through tiny unidirectional valves as the patient bites down resulting in a tighter fit and an improved resistance to dislodging forces. For the partial denture wearer the super lightweight chrome alloys continue to offer a more attractive alternative to acrylic dentures with their ultra-thin frameworks which are clipped to the natural teeth with clasps. These small thin chrome dentures also allow the wear to no longer have acrylic covering their palate, meaning they can actually properly taste their food again. For patients who struggle with unsightly metal clasps there is now an alternative, these clips can be made from a nylon type material which is available in natural tooth or clear shades. Nick can also make partial dentures from a flexible nylon type material which is extremely strong and offers a very snug comfortable fit.

Traditional partial denture covering the roof of the mouth with acrylic.

Blooming surprise Warm and wet winter weather has led to an increase of nearly two thirds in the number of plants in bloom at National Trust properties in Devon and Cornwall. The annual Valentine’s Flower count in February recorded a total of nearly 2,650 varieties. The snowdrop has been voted the top spring flower for the third year running in the South West, with the gardens at Stourhead, Lanhydrock, Kingston Lacey and Cotehele being the most popular places to see spring blooms. National Trust Garden teams in the South West have recorded more flowers in bloom since 2008 in this year’s annual Valentine’s Flower Count, with nearly all gardens showing an increase in the amount of varieties of plants in bloom. In 2008 3,335 plants in bloom were recorded in Devon and Cornwall (where the flower count first started), marking the earliest spring so far recorded. 2644 plants were recorded in gardens across the whole of the South West this (2016) year compared with 1,622 in 2015. Matched by record breaking amounts rain falling in December, the very mild and dull weather has been causing huge confusion to plants in National Trust gardens across the South West. Many flowers and plants have continued to flower all winter, some are appearing all together and some plants have appeared much earlier than normal. Daffodils are appearing with snowdrops and even a bluebell or two has struggled to the surface boosted by mild weather. Varieties of magnolia which usually flower over a period of months are appearing together and much earlier than usual. Even summer flowering plants such as hydrangea’s, Fuchsia and Agapanthus are flowering. to 4pm Use the ‘War Games’ exhibition and ‘Royal Game’ sculpture as your starting point and work with our guest artist to make chess shapes, draught pieces and a wonderful chess board to play out your own game

He said: “I’m delighted to see the start of our Zebra Sharks moving to display in

When we received them as eggs over two years ago we often feared the worst, but through the great work of our husbandry team, we’re proud to see them as the happy and healthy Zebra Sharks that they are today. “Zebra Sharks are really striking species undergoing a dramatic colour change as they grow and our trio is still juvenile enough to have a faint outline of stripes which gives them the name Zebra, however, they are now developing their adult colours which look much more like a leopard!

Artmill exhibition

Exhibitions and Other Events

Work by painters and printmakers from Plymouth and beyond will be featured at an exhibition in the city in March and April. Members of the 21 Group of Artists will be on show at the Artmill Gallery in Hyde Park Road, Peverell from Saturday March 5 to Saturday April 2. The exhibition is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday. The 21 Group of Artists are committed to high standards and individual creativity and present two or three exhibitions of professional work each year in the south Devon and surrounding areas. A wide range of approaches, techniques and media interact creatively with each other to offer viewers a rich variety of images. Whilst much of their work is based upon landscape, other subjects and abstract pieces also feature.

Work by Richard Allman, who will be exhibiting at Artmill Gallery

The group was formed in 1967, when the late Jane Prout persuaded 20 other forward-looking local painters in and around Totnes to exhibit together. In order to maintain high standards, the group still limits membership to a maximum of 21 artists. More than 40 years on, the 21 Group is Teresa Pemberton will be taking part in one of the longest established exhibiting the exhibition groups in the South West. Its members are now drawn from a wide area stretching from beyond Exeter in the east, to Cornwall in the west, and northwards towards Okehampton. Plymouth-based artists who will be taking part in the exhibition include Teresa Pemberton, Rita Smith, Richard Allman and Richard Sunderland.

•• Art and mathematics For more information visit www.21group.org.uk

The relationship between art and mathematics has a long, rich and complex history, with both artists and mathematicians drawing inspiration from one another to investigate new ideas. In 2015, to mark their 150th anniversary, the London Mathematical Society selected artists, Mark Francis and George L-Legendre, to create new work drawing on mathematical ideas. Their work will be featured at an exhibition at the Peninsula Art Gallery in Plymouth University’s Roland Levinsky Building from April 9 to May 28. The exhibition brings new works together, alongside visual material from the mathematicians, with whom they worked, including Professor Sir Roger Penrose (University of Oxford), Dr Iain Moffatt (Royal Holloway) and Dr Dorothy Buck (Imperial College, London). In these collected works we begin to glimpse a shared conversation between the separate disciplines, and find a history, creativity and future common to both. Heidi Morstang was also commissioned to produce a film ‘Thinking Space’ which explores how mathematicians think. On Friday April 22 at 6.30pm there will be a special film screening and talk by Professor Stephen Huggett, professor in pure mathematics and Heidi Morstang, lecturer in Photography. Free admission, booking is advisable. Admission is free and the exhibition is open Mondays to Fridays from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

James Clarke, managing director of the estate agency, said: "January and February traditionally tend to be relatively quiet, mainly because homeowners are waiting for the spring before putting their property on the market. "However, this year we have seen far busier levels of activity than we would have expected," he added. He believed that continued low interest rates, shortage of supply and the Stamp Duty changes for investors which come into effect at the beginning of April have all contributed to the busier-than-usual start to the year. Investors in buy-to-let properties and people buying second homes will be hit by a 3% surcharge from April. This means the tax bill on a buy-to-let property costing £250,000 will jump from £2,500 to £8,800. This had led to an increase in buy-to-let activity as investors scrambled to beat the deadline, he said. "People who have been considering using their pension pot to invest in typical two-up, two-down properties are being directly affected by the changes. "It's clear that this new measure highlights the fact that the government is trying to do everything possible to enable first time buyers to get on the housing ladder. This has been reinforced with the launch of the new 'help to buy' ISA." This gives savers the option for a tax-free payment from the government of up to £6,000 for couples buying their first home, and interest rates of up to 4% when saving for a deposit. When an account is first opened savers will be able to deposit up to £1,000 as a lump sum, then up to £200 a month until the account holds a maximum of £12,000. When the saver comes to buy a home the government will pay a bonus of 25% - which means up to £3,000 is available per head. "It is difficult to predict what impact this will have in the

limited time Offer

and a Door £2499.00 future, but it is certainly good news for first time buyers." He said that despite the Stamp Duty changes the property market in Plymouth continued to attract interest from investors outside the area. "There are a growing number of professional property investors who are turning their attention to Plymouth, as the city does offer attractive opportunities. We have had phenomenal response to advertising we have undertaken in national property magazines. "This means that there will continue to be a shortage of good family homes in areas such as Stoke, Hartley, Peverell and Mannamead." He said that despite the general shortage of property coming onto the market, Lang Town & Country had helped nearly 1,000 buyers and tenants to move in the last year. Lang Town & Country Estate Agents was formally launched in May last year following the merger of two of the city's leading independent estate agents – Lang & Co and Town & Country. Since the merger, the new business has gone from strength to strength, opening a new office in the Barbican to reinforce its position in the waterside property market in Plymouth. James said: "The new office in Notte Street has helped raise the profile of the whole business and certainly benefited our other offices in North Hill, Mannamead and Plymstock." The company had also been successful in being chosen to handle the marketing of a number of new home developments in the city in recent months. These included a development of 27 one and two bedroom apartments in Victoria Road, Stoke. Victoria Court has been undertaken by a private developer and is generating a huge amount of interest with prices ranging from £115,000 to £155,000. He said that one of the reasons for the company's continued success in property sales had been the introduction of a dedicated sales progression team. "There is a national problem with property sales often taking far longer to reach completion than they should. This is due to a number of factors, including a shortage of solicitors specialising in conveyancing, partly caused by the emergence of conveyancing call centres offering what appears to be a cheap option, but which can often prove extremely costly." Lang Town & Country's sales progression team is led by director Marc Rees, who has more than 30 years experience in the property market. He is assisted by Katie Roberts. James said: "Marc's invaluable knowledge of the Plymouth property market means that he can identify issues that could potentially delay the progress of a sale. He and Katie maintain close contact with solicitors, surveyors and lenders to ensure that exchange of contracts and completion of the sale are achieved as quickly as possible."

Armada Kitchens recipe for success!

They say that the kitchen is the focal point of every home, the gathering place where families and friends come together to talk over the day ahead or the day that’s just been.

So it’s not surprising that when it comes to upgrading your home, the kitchen is often the first room on the ‘to do’ list. And that these days, people are looking for something that

And, with all the units hand-built by West Country-based craftsmen and the doors and panels from leading importers and manufacturers, you’re guaranteed quality as well as looks. Working with you through the design, supply and installation, Jon and his colleague James can provide the sort of service you’re unlikely to get from most major chains. way. Worktops include wood, resin, laminate and beautiful granite from Plymouth Stone: “We like working with other local businesses,” said Jon. “And Plymouth Stone provide the sort of quality and service that we aspire to.” Doors also come in a variety of materials, from vinyl and acrylic to a selection of solid woods. Appliances are supplied by top brands such as AEG, Neff, Zanussi, Electrolux and Franke. Jon, who opened the shop three years ago, has been in the trade for over 20 years. As well as supplying and fitting your kitchen, Jon and James will arrange the plumbing and electrical work and any building work that’s necessary: it really is a one-stop kitchen shop. They also offer the same supply and fit service for bedrooms and bathrooms. And, as with the kitchen designs, you can choose between traditional or contemporary styles. Much of their business comes through word of mouth, recommendations from happy customers. Among them, Stoke customer Caroline, who asked Armada Kitchens to transform a bedroom into a fully fitted kitchen and to build a fully equipped ensuite bathroom in-between two other rooms. “We went to Armada and several other companies but overall we were most impressed with the complete package that Armada presented to us,” said Caroline. “And they said they’d do everything so it would be entirely projectmanaged . We love the kitchen and en-suite, especially considering it was such a difficult job because of the plumbing work that had to be done.

“We’d definitely recommend people visit Armada Kitchens and get a quote. You get a fantastic level of service from a local company.” Jon says that being local and trusted is a big selling point: “We’ve got a small and cosy showroom which offers a much more personal approach than some of our larger competitors. The shops here in Millbridge offer an excellent range of items for the discerning home furnisher and our showroom fits in perfectly.” All installations come with a guarantee so you’ll know that once fitted, you can sit back and enjoy your fabulous new installation for years to come. You can see examples of fitted kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms on the Armada Kitchens website. And why not pop in to see Jon and James for a cuppa and a chat to see how they can help you transform your home.

FLOORING MATTERS

Fantastic flooring without the hassle! With a range of over 400 floors on offer and a growing list of commercial and domestic customers, it’s hardly surprising that PB Laminate & Wood Flooring boss Paul Brimacombe decided they needed a bigger showroom. The firm, set up by Paul 14 years ago, moved to its new premises in Estover late last year. The large space is made up of some of their most popular ranges. It means that customers can actually see what they look like fitted, rather than having to imagine it. “It’s been a great move for us,” said Paul. “This place is a lot bigger and it’s just much better for our customers. Our catchphrase is ‘All You Need Under One Roof’ – whatever you’re looking for, there’s every chance we’ll have it on display here.” Paul and his team offer an ‘all-in-one’ service, advising, measuring, supplying and fitting laminate and wood flooring. A ‘supply only’ service is also available for customers who want to fit it themselves. At PB they specialise in the Quick-Step brand of flooring, which includes laminate, engineered, and luxury vinyl tile. Paul said: “Quick-Step is one of the biggest suppliers in the world, it’s a fantastic product and we are proud to be the only QuickStep Platinum dealer in the South West”. The Quick-Step Laminate range comes with a minimum of a 20year wear warranty, a lifetime join warranty, scratchguard, and the new ‘Impressive’ range is even waterproof. “This range is the new big thing to hit the market, a lot of our customers have pets, so want it to be waterproof, hard wearing and maintenance free, it’s also ideal for commercial jobs,” said Paul.

42\

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

“Another big thing is flooring staircases, in laminate or engineered wood, customers don’t realise you can floor stairs until they’ve come to our showroom. It’s very satisfying seeing an old set of stairs transformed in a day.” If you’re thinking of renewing your flooring, the first step is to pop up to the showroom for a chat. Paul and his staff will guide and advise you about which flooring is right for your room and you can take away samples. They’ll also carry out a free survey at your home. “You’ll get the full package from us,” said Paul, “and you’ll be amazed what a massive difference your new floor makes to your home. It will completely transform a room so that it looks brand new again.” Paul and his team have just completed an installation at Coffee Bean in the city centre and last year they were appointed to carry out a major job at Buckfast Abbey. But they’re equally happy to do smaller, domestic installations: “No job is too big and no job is too small,” said Paul. Whether it’s home owners or big commercial customers, a key factor behind the firm’s long-term success is their trusted reputation: “We get a lot of return customers as well as new customers who say we’ve been recommended to them,” said Paul. “When people move house they use us again, or if they want another part of their house re-floored they come back to us. Our customers tell us that we’re efficient and friendly and that we do what we say we’re going to do. We never use subcontractors. We can work around furniture and we are clean and tidy. We’ll even remove all the old flooring if needed.” Laminated and engineered flooring has come a long way

since the early days. Now, there are hundreds of shades and styles manufactured to such a high standard that they’ll last you for decades. All budgets are catered for, with prices from £8 per metre to £110 per metre. So has Paul noticed any current trends? “Greys are still in but so are traditional wood flooring shades. They never go out of fashion. To be honest, a lot of people come in and they don’t really know what it is they’re after. That’s where we can offer helpful guidance, not pushy sales talk. “Our aim is for our customers to have a hassle-free experience from the minute they come in to see us to the minute we shut the door behind us at their house. For us, customer service is everything.” You’ll find the new PB Laminates showroom at Estover Close, where there is plenty of customer parking. Visit the website for more information and opening times.

Since 1985

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

Do you ever wonder what five month-old babies are hearing and how much they actually understand? Well, it is probably more than you think! Babies have been found to recognise a variety of words from the age of five months. We all know that for an infant the most common first words like ‘Mama’ or ‘Papa’ are the easiest sounds to babble at around the age of five or six months. However, children as young as five months can recognise some words that are highly familiar such as the word ‘Daddy’ or their own name. In a study we are running at the moment, we present a parent and a baby with the word ‘Mummy’, in a variety of different versions. For example, we change the vowel or the consonant at the beginning of the word, such as ‘Mammy’ or ‘Nummy’. This is to understand if a child would hear small variations in a very familiar word. We know that by the age of six to 10 months, children have a good knowledge for the sound of the words, even though they do not say a word yet, but we do not know if this is also the case at five months. At the Babylab, our studies are designed to gain a deeper understanding of how much children can actually do, even if they are not able to verbalise it yet. For example, one of our studies focuses on their ability to recognise rhythmic patterns in different languages. The rhythmic pattern of Spanish language is based on the syllable, which means that all syllables are more or less of the same duration. Other languages like Dutch or English do not have this regular unit but the duration of syllables varies depending on whether they are stressed or not. We know that babies can distinguish between two different languages that have different rhythmic pattern (Dutch and Spanish for example), but we want to know if they are also capable of distinguishing two languages that have similar rhythmic patterns, like German and Arabic.

This would be amazing considering that at five months a baby cannot even say their own name; who would have thought they could differentiate between rhythmic patterns in languages they have never heard before! If you are interested in helping out and have a newly born infant, please get in touch so we can make an appointment. There is a wide range of studies run here at the Babylab, with children from birth to 6 years of age, looking into all aspects of a child’s development. We will invite you into the Babylab, just a five minute walk from Drake Circus. The Babylab is a fun and vibrant place for your child and a relaxing place for you. It is nicely decorated and there are plenty of toys to play with. For coming along to a Babylab study children will be awarded a Babylab Scientist certificate, a balloon and can choose from a range of gift as a thank you for taking part!

TRAINING MATTERS

Building for the future A shortage of skilled labour in the construction industry has raised major concerns among members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors at a time when the number of development projects is growing in Plymouth and the rest of the South West. Mark Boulting, managing director of Skills Group, the Plymouth-based apprenticeship training provider gives his

reaction to the results of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) survey. Mark said: "Last year Skills Group opened a dedicated training centre at Langage Science Park in Plympton for the training of construction apprentices in brickwork, carpentry and joinery, fenestration, flooring, painting and decorating, plastering and tiling. "The RICS findings confirm the picture we’ve been seeing at Skills Group in training and education for over two years now. The issue of a skills shortage in construction, and also engineering, is continuing to be a major problem, with the predictable consequence of constraining growth in these sectors and beyond to the wider economy. "This could be a real worry for Plymouth with the amount of development already underway – developing the skills that are in demand will take time and a co-ordinated effort to address. "RICS identified that wages in construction are rising at more than double the national average, and while this should be a driver for labour migration into the sector it is a mixed blessing. Youngsters may well see increased earnings potential as a reason for considering a career in construction – assuming schools and colleges actually pass this information on. However, this also has the effect of attracting more unskilled or semi-skilled labour to meet gaps, and may also attract staff away from training the next generation of tradespeople and professionals. "Unfortunately some damage has already been done. Construction recruitment in the region has been falling for the last two years due to a mix of poor advice and guidance from schools and funding uncertainty for employers. We need a concerted and coordinated approach – a construction apprenticeship takes between two and three years to complete, and requires committed employers. This means looking beyond self-interest, and thinking about the economy and our children’s future. "I am pleased to say that the signs locally are positive. Plymouth City Council’s Building Plymouth initiative is an example of a proactive collaboration with the aim of recruiting 10,000 construction workers over the next ten years.

At Skills Group we Mark Boulting have invested £2m in developing a dedicated training centre for the construction trades, and since opening in October 2014 we have seen a 25 per cent increase in construction apprenticeships. "There is also the potential move by government to restrict two-year college courses, therefore forcing the sector to invest in apprenticeships over classroom-based courses, and the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, has recently announced new legislation to ensure schools allow technical colleges and apprenticeship providers in to school to talk to their pupils about other options. Some schools, such as Ivybridge Community College, have always put the youngsters’ choice at the heart of what they do and offer unbiased advice and guidance. So while the RICS survey reinforces what we at Skills Group have been saying for some time, there are signs of improvement. "However, as I have already said, it takes time to train a qualified and productive workforce, and things will probably get tougher before they get better. Perhaps if we had taken the steps necessary a few years ago we wouldn’t be here now - but that is no reason not to act now. The challenge is for all interested parties to follow the example of those cited above, stop talking, and start acting. We can solve this in the medium term but we need to take decisive action now." Skills Group offer apprenticeship training for business admin, care and early years, construction, engineering and automotive, hairdressing and barbering, sport and leisure, and teaching and education. With training centres in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Plympton, Skills Group have the

ART MATTERS

Award-winning artist Rita talks about her inspiration Local Plymouth artist Rita Smith has had one of her paintings shortlisted for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize. Now in its 11th year, it is considered one of the most prestigious awards for artists in the country.

Experience WITH CHRIS COLE

I went to meet Rita in her Stoke studio and asked her about her journey to get to this point. She told me: "Having completed my ‘A’ levels, I went to art school in London as a single parent. I studied painting at Camberwell School of Art and came out with a First Class Honours Degree. "I then went on to the Slade School of Fine Art and won a scholarship to travel in America. In 1993 I won the Guinness Award for the best first time exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I became a visiting lecturer at Camberwell and taught at Falmouth School of Art for several years. "While I lived in London my work was abstract, based on urban landscape, but when I moved to the West Country I became more interested in developing paintings which are based on observation.

"For many years I concentrated on still life and interiors in watercolour, but more recently my focus has shifted outwards towards the environment again, searching out particular places and journeys for inspiration, and working with a variety of media and approaches. "Etching is also an important part of my work, using both still life and architectural subject matter," added Rita. As I looked at some of Rita’s paintings, I asked her if any particular artist had inspired her. She told me: "Edward Hopper- an American artist in the 40s and 50s. He is one of my favourites. He is the influence behind the painting that is in the exhibition. "Much of my work is about people in places. It just came gradually from doing etchings of New York. I started to notice situations where people were in their own private world amongst city life. So I’m very interested in finding subjects that many people would just pass by." Rita told me about the painting that has been selected for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize exhibition. Art She said: "The picture that has been Matters chosen is part of a series of large watercolours of particular places I with have visited because I have loved the Kerry Cole architecture. "What has often inspired me to paint has been observing people in their surroundings. I have visited the Tate Gallery in St Ives many times and wondered how I could paint it, but on this particular day I saw a woman sitting deep in thought and I wanted to make a painting of how her inner world was reflected by the architecture and the view of the sea." Many local art lovers will be interested to know that Rita is a founding member of the Drawn to the Valley group of artists who organise Open Studios annually. Rita will be next showing her work at the Artmill Gallery with the 21 group of artists from March 5 April 2 and will be having a one person show there next October.

TRAVEL MATTERS

Cuba and Mexico proving popular for holidaymakers

The holiday booking season is well under way and so far, it’s been a good start to the year. There is no question, however, that travellers are being much more specific about the destinations that they do not want to travel to, which is hardly surprising after a number of recent events worldwide that have had an inevitable impact on visitor numbers. We are also finding an increasing number of clients who are welcome to the suggestion of travelling further afield than they would normally. The Caribbean generally has seen a great deal of interest with Cuba and Mexico being the most popular choices so far. This is not surprising as these destinations are not only regarded as offering something a little bit different to the traditional Caribbean islands but because there are some excellent value for money holidays available in superb quality hotels. We have also seen a significant increase in demand for tailor-made itineraries to the USA with customers asking us to arrange two-centre and even three-centre holidays. This is often possible in North America due to the extensive network of flights between cities although some travellers

50\

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

are choosing to book Amtrak rail links between cities and do some sightseeing en-route. All in all, it’s been a busy start to the booking season with a real mixture of enquiries and more unusual requests to put the extensive knowledge of our travel staff to the test! It has been brought to my attention recently that there has been a major change in documentation requirements for children travelling to South Africa with or without their parents. A wide range of very strict restrictions have been introduced and if you are planning to travel to South Africa with one of your own children or another child under the age of 18, please call us for information. Be warned travellers will be refused admission to South Africa if they don't have the right documentation. The issue of the spelling of names on flight tickets and holiday bookings has always been the bane of every travel agents life. This is not only because, and I hold my hands up in admission, we do occasionally make mistakes but mainly due to the fact that when booking holidays, clients often guess the name spellings and dates of birth for other travellers in their group. In years gone by this never resulted in a serious problem

as most tour operators levied a small fee for minor name changes or simply did if free of charge. However, unfortunately for us all, airlines and tour operators are becoming increasing less flexible with such requests and administration charges have become a very effective way of generating additional income for these organisations to enable them to boost profits. I had one particular case recently where the first name of the passenger was spelt incorrectly and the airline charged £210 to correct the spelling, which was effectively the cost of a completely new flight ticket! My advice therefore to anyone booking holidays or flights, either with their travel agent or online, is to have the passports of all passengers travelling with you at the time of booking. It may take a bit of extra organisation, but any mistake in this process could prove to be very costly. It is now mandatory for tour operators and airlines to request a lot more information at the time of booking such as passport numbers and expiry dates so it makes sense to be prepared and have all these details to hand. You may feel confident that you know the full names of your fellow passengers, but it is surprising how many people have different names and spellings in their passports to those they go by in everyday life. Finally this month, I would like to clarify the difference between an independent travel agent – such as ourselves – and a multiple travel agent. This is a question that I keep being asked, not only by clients but by many people I meet at presentations and business forums and I feel it By Travel deserves a more detailed explanation. Expert Putting it as concisely as possible, Anthony Goord an independent travel agent is normally owned by and an individual, a partnership or a small limited company and would usually trade from one premises or a handful of branches within the same locality. A multiple travel agency however is owned by a tour operator and would operate from retail shops in multiple cities and towns, often having hundreds of branches. The main multiple travel agents in our region are Thomson (TUI) and Thomas Cook in addition to Co-Op Travel who are also now part of the Thomas Cook Group. These multiple agencies have their own products, which they will quite clearly and understandably focus on selling to all their customers before a product owned by a competitor. It is highly likely therefore that if you visit a multiple travel agent to book a holiday, you will leave the shop having booked one of their 'in-house' holiday products. The story will be very different if you use the services of an independent travel agent who is able to offer all the holidays that the multiples do but who has the freedom to also sell holidays from a vast range of other tour operators, ultimately giving clients a much greater choice. Multiples are often limited in which products they can sell and independent travel agents therefore have exclusive access to many products by specialist and niche operators, both large and small. We may not always be as price competitive when booking some of the mainstream packages offered by multiple tour operators through their own agencies but I feel that this is far outweighed by the holiday choice available from an independent travel agent. Peter Goord Travel has been chosen to represent Kuoni in the South West region, which gives us a distinct advantage over other travel agents selling this particular product. It doesn’t mean however that Kuoni holidays are the only products we sell – we can book holidays offered by all tour operators; a claim which cannot be made by multiple travel agents nationwide! Happy Holidays! www.cornerstonevision.com

FAMILY MATTERS

By Liz Crudgington of the Roundabout Day Nursery

Have some family fun making Easter biscuits

Easter is always such a lovely time of year: the onset of Spring and the hope of new life to come. Spring flowers, new lambs in the fields, the days getting longer and the weather warming. And with Easter come more traditions that we associate with this time of year. Easter chicks and eggs and of course some edible traditions too! Simnel cake, Easter nests and biscuits. This month we have a recipe for Easter biscuits that were made by our very own nursery chef, Jayne, with some of our pre-school children. This is what you’ll need; √√ 125 g butter √√ 125 g sugar √√ 2 egg yolks √√ 50 g currants √√ 275 g plain flour √√ Teaspoon mixed spice √√ Egg white √√ Castor sugar to sprinkle the tops with

Method Cream the butter and fat. Mix in the egg yolks, currants, mixed spice and flour. If you need to add a little milk to help bind together. The mixture should be softer than pastry, but possible to roll out. Prick with a fork and cut with whatever shape cutters you choose. Put on a greased baking tin and cook at 200˚C for 15 – 20 minutes. 10 minutes into the cooking time take out of the oven and brush with a little egg white and sprinkle with castor sugar. Children love to make biscuits. They can be part of the whole process, from mixing the dough to rolling out, cutting and of course eating! Happy Easter!

What is the value of a life? Under current legal guidelines in England and Wales, damages for a severe injury to a toe are greater than that awarded for the loss of a loved one due to negligence. There is a statutory bereavement award, available to those who have lost a loved one, which currently stands at £12,980 however the Negligence and Damages Bill aims to change this and provide better access to justice for those who have lost a loved one. Relatives in England and Wales who suffer psychiatric injury, as a result of the death or serious injury to their loved one, also have to overcome very strict and high hurdles in order to be compensated for their own injuries. An example of this is in relation to the death of a child during childbirth, the law is so strict that it often means that a mother can make a claim for psychiatric injuries whilst a father cannot, even though they may both have been present at the birth.

The Plymouth Magazine March 2016

The Negligence and Damages Bill was presented to Parliament on 13 October 2015 and the second reading is due to take place on 22 January 2016. The Bill has extended the list of individuals (which currently stand at four – parents, spouses, children and fiancés) who can make such a claim. The new list includes fourteen different types of relationships such as, cohabitees, friends and colleagues. The Bill also aims to abandon the need for there to be a requirement of “a sudden and shocking event” which is extremely restrictive. For example, those who have suffered over a longer period of time, whilst watching a loved one deteriorate and die are currently not able to bring a successful claim for psychiatric injuries. The new Bill also suggests removing the fixed award for bereavement damages instead, allowing Judges to look at each case individually. Currently, only a husband, wife, civil partner and parents of a minor are entitled to a bereavement award and the Bill has extended this

list to include cohabitees, siblings and grandparents. Wolferstans are pleased that it has been recognized that the current law is unfair however there is a long way to go before this Bill becomes law, providing it is not opposed. In circumstances where someone has died as a result of negligence, there are other potential claims for damages, such as a dependency claim for those who were financially dependent on the deceased. Wolferstans are experienced in advising clients who have suffered psychiatric injury or lost a loved one as a result of negligence. We understand that this will be a very difficult time and we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible. If you have a claim you would like to discuss and would like to have a free initial discussion- without any obligation- please contact Jade Wilkes on 01752 292248 or email her at jwilkes@wolferstans.com .

BUSINESS MATTERS Tyran Botha pictured with a customer at Vivid Green

Customers guaranteed a warm welcome at Vivid Green shop Finding a qualified plumber in Plymouth has become a whole lot easier, since Vivid Green opened their plumbing and heating on Hyde Park Road in Peverell. The shop is on a prominent corner right in the middle of the Hyde Park shopping area with free parking available right outside the shop. The idea of the shop came about as a result of a need for high street exposure for a business sector where the customer is commonly used to dealing with a 'man with a van' and a mobile phone.

Customers often report being unable to get hold of a plumber or even worse making contact with one after they undertake work and have an ongoing issue. Communication issues often promote customer frustration and lead to poor service within the sector. By having a high street shop customers can pop in to Vivid Green and discuss any new or old requirements or concerns they may have. “We basically wanted to make ourselves available to the customer,” explained Tyran Botha, a director of Vivid Green, • Continued on next page...

“and for the customer to be given the correct information. This gives them peace of mind and allows them to make an informed decision on what can these days be a high value purchase. It's very important that people are able to do that." They can also flick though plumbing and heating catalogues over a cuppa and view a selection of boilers, radiators and accessories in the shop. Tyran said the shop was a natural progression for the business partners and it means customers get the best possible service right from the outset. Tyran and his business partner Adrian Cottenham have been involved in plumbing and construction for more than 20 years. “I think after years of people doing everything online, they’re now looking for more of a personal touch. They want to deal with real people and they like to see a face. This is one of the few places where you can get that.” Vivid Green is Trading Standards-approved and also an approved member of Plymouth City Council’s Buy With Confidence scheme, providing customers with even more peace of mind. “Consumer confidence is so important in this industry and that’s something people will get here,” said Tyran. “People can come in and see our qualifications on the wall. be the people who come out to do the work as we employ our own engineers." An added bonus to the shop is that customers can size up the boilers to see if they’ll fit their space. Looks are also important if the boiler is going to be fitted in the kitchen. Vivid Green are approved installers for are Ideal and Vaillant gas and log boilers and also for Firebird oil boilers. The company is Gas Safe and Oftec registered and trained for both oil and gas installations, servicing and repairs to all boilers and system types, so they offer services above and beyond the average, explained Tyran. "Boilers are available to suit all price levels and come with up to a 10 year parts and labour guarantee. The reason we work with these brands is because they're well established, they've got a very good reputation and are leaders in their fields.

"All products we use will fall into the same category in that they install trust and reliability in our services. "We only want to be associated with top flight quality brands and in addition we also use Drayton heating controls. Installing this type of equipment not only reflects on our general quality as a company, but also ensures the customer receives a good end product." Vivid Green offers a free, no obligation quote in writing, and can normally do the work within a couple of days. The firm also provides installations of pressurised water systems which are very popular as they provide multi offtake, high pressure showering throughout a customer's property. The company always take away old materials and packaging from any installation, giving the customer a truly trouble free experience. Once you have your new boiler, Tyran says it’s vital to book an annual service to ensure it’s maintained to maximum performance levels. Servicing will also lengthen the life of the boiler. Vivid Green also specialises in all aspects of renewables and electrical work as well as general plumbing, including new bathrooms: “We can do the full works – the plumbing, the electrics, the tiling, the lot,” said Tyran. He explained that the company is a registered Green Deal installer and often has free boiler availability for those on low income or benefit entitlement. The Government scheme is particularly attractive for those with low incomes who have children and receive tax credits or the elderly who receive

pension credit assistance. The scheme is open to those who work. The business is a real family affair for Tyran and Adrian, with both of their wives also helping out in the shop: “We’re like part of the Hyde Park community now,” said Tyran. “Since we opened in August 2013 we’ve had a lot of custom from people in the area, which is really nice. And the feedback we’ve had is great.” Adrian says that their mission to provide homeowners with a completely new experience has been accomplished: “We wanted to offer something different and I think we’ve achieved that. We have time for our customers in the shop and they know we’ll always be here at the end of the phone, too. We hope this relationship will continue for many years to come.” And Tyran added: “We offer a premium service but without the premium costs. Customers regularly comment with surprise at the cost of our installations. I’d just say to people ‘you know where we are, come in and see us for a chat we're confident that you won't be disappointed'.” The firm’s website has testimonials from satisfied customers and links to the firm’s Facebook page, which boasts over 700 ‘likes’. Visit the Vivid Green website for more information including the shop’s Monday to Friday opening times and a page on energy saving tips.

Euphorbia purpurea. This is good choice for poor, dry soil. Euphorbia Purpurea has dark purple foliage that contrasts well with its lime green flowers that emerge in spring. It makes a good evergreen backdrop to woodland plants or other shade-lovers. In heavy shade the foliage may fade to green. It’s also a good variety for large winter containers. It grows to a height or 30cm (12ins) with a spread of 60cm (2ft). Another beautiful and incredibly useful variety is Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow. It is equally as versatile as Euphorbia Purpurea, and equally suited to garden or pot growing. The main differences are that Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow is taller growing. It grows to a height of 90cm (3ft) with a spread of 75cm (2ft6ins). It has grey, green foliage with a lime variegation and red tips, taking on more pinky red tones in the leaves during the colder months. The flower bracts also have a similar variegation in the spring. As well as the early flowering perennials, March is the cherry blossom month. Up and down the country cherry blossoms will be in full flower and showering the ground with confetti every time the wind blows. A much under-rated tree is the Weeping Flowering Cherry (Prunus Kiku Shidare Sakura ‘Cheal’s Weeping’). The flowers of the Weeping Flowering Cherry are a pale pink in colour and flower all along the weeping branches. The petals are frilled and sweetly scented of almonds. It also puts on a spectacular autumn display of foliage in rich tones of red, orange and yellow. It is perfectly suited to all but the smallest size garden and can be grown in beds, borders and in pots, if it’s a large pot. Weeping Flowering Cherry grows to a height of 7.5m (25ft) with a spread of 8m (26ft), if it is a non-grafted specimen, however typical grafted specimens usually grow to a height and spread of 1.5-2.4m (5 to 8ft).
