It’s a feast of festivals for the Ocean City

NAME THE MESSY TIGER COMPETITION

Winner gets a Craft Hamper & a cuddly tiger toy.

As the warmer summer months approach it’s time to look forward to a whole host of major events in Plymouth starting with the spectacular Transat Race in early May, including the Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival. At the end of May we can look forward to the Lord Mayor’s Festival, followed by the hugely popular Flavour Fest during the first weekend in June. Before all that happens, we have the rapidly expanding Plymouth History Festival taking place throughout May and early June - and there are two other local festivals to enjoy as well. The Plymouth Fringe Festival returns between May 30 and June 4 with a host of theatre, dance, comedy and other performances at a range of venues across the city. Meanwhile the Freedom Community Festival will be hosting a range of events between May 28 and June 3 - culminating in the family fun festival in Freedom Fields Park. Organisers of the Freedom Community Festival have been given a boost with funding from the Big Lottery’s Awards for All Fund - which means the week-long festival in the Greenbank and Mutley area will be bigger and better than ever. You will find details of all these events in our comprehensive what’s on section in the centre of this issue. We also have our usual selection of features about businesses and people who are having a positive impact in the city. They include a spotlight on Interiors Hyde Park, launched by Penny Richings and now expanded into a second location following the arrival of new codirector Fiona Wilson. You can read their story on page 10. Hope you enjoy the rest of this issue!

Judith and Martin living the dream There’s nothing more Plymouth couple Judith and Martin Soper enjoy than looking after their three grandchildren. But their mid-terraced St Budeaux home needed more space, so they decided to extend upwards and outwards to give themselves the home of their dreams in readiness for Martin’s retirement from the Dockyard in a few years’ time. “We decided to have a loft extension to give us a total of four bedrooms and extend at the back of the house to provide a much bigger kitchen and dining area,” said Martin. Work began in the middle of last year and the couple soon got used to living in what had become something of a building site. Judith, who retired from her job as a teaching assistant three years ago, said: “We virtually lived out of our front room for the best part of six months and Martin even created a temporary kitchen in the lounge while all the work went on.” The loft extension created a brand new master bedroom overlooking the Tamar Valley and Judith wanted fitted bedroom furniture to complete the transformation. “I visited a number of showrooms and eventually found KF Kitchens who had an excellent display of fitted bedrooms,”she said. “Simon from KF Kitchens could not have been more helpful and he designed the range of bespoke fitted wardrobes, along with bedside lockers and a matching door onto Martin’s walk-in wardrobe. “We were really pleased with the end result - but the best was yet to come,” said Judith. “I fell completely in love with one of the kitchens on display in their incredible showroom and I knew that anything else would be second best. “I was like a child in a sweet shop looking at all the amazing gadgets, appliances and finishing touches that KF Kitchens have available,” she added. Their previous kitchen had been small and cramped, but the

rear extension created a spacious 240 square foot kitchen-dining area. She and Martin selected a stone grey gloss finish for all the cupboards, doors and kitchen units along with a quartz blanco stella worktop from Plymouth-based Mayflower Stone. A striking red splashback supplied by Armada Glass perfectly complements the cool grey colour scheme. “I love bling,” said Judith,”and the worktop has a fantastic sparkly effect. I even managed to find matching floor tiles.” Additional features included a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water, pop up electrical sockets, LED plinth lighting and under-counter lighting for a breakfast bar area – part of a large central island which also accommodates an induction hob by NEFF. The range of new appliances also includes a NEFF combination microwave and single oven featuring slide and hide door with telescopic shelf and warming drawer. One of Judith’s favourite features is the full length Artline pull out larder with a series of spacious shelves which provides a huge amount of storage space for jars, cans, packets and much more. “I love my new larder,” said Judith. “Everything is instantly visible - no hunting around the back of cupboards looking for a long lost bottle of sauce,” she said. KF Kitchens team of fitters and trade specialists ensured that the whole installation was undertaken with the minimum of fuss. “Their fitter Peter was brilliant,” said Judith. “He installed all the bedroom furniture and then moved on to the kitchen when the builders had finished the major works. “Nothing was too much trouble for him and he did an excellent job. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending KF Kitchens to anyone who is thinking about having a new bedroom or kitchen,” she added. Martin had the last word: “This has given us a fantastic new lease of life!”

BUSINESS MATTERS

One becomes two as business booms at Interiors Hyde Park Fiona Wilson (left) and Penny Richings at Interiors Hyde Park

Less than six years after opening its doors, Interiors Hyde Park has proved so popular with customers that it’s expanded into a second shop. Interiors 2 – which has opened just yards away from the original shop in the city’s bustling Hyde Park Road – follows the arrival of new co-director Fiona Wilson, who reached the final of the BBC’s Great Interior Design Challenge in 2014. Fiona joins Interiors Hyde Park founder Penny Richings, who has seen the business grow so much that the original shop at Number 75 simply ran out of room. It will continue to sell quality furniture and individual items for the home, while the new shop across the road at Number 100 is a design studio focusing on bespoke, made-tomeasure soft furnishings such as curtains and blinds. It also has a range of accessories including rugs made from recycled plastic bottles, while lining the shelves is a huge fabric library packed with samples from brands such as Liberty, Sanderson, Jane Churchill and Romo: “Whether it’s top end fabrics or if you’re working to a tight budget, you name it, we’ve got it or we can source it,” said Fiona. As well as designing and making specific items for customers, Interiors 2 also offers a service for those wanting a complete room or home make-over. All the sewing work is carried out in the shop by seamstress Keren Ward, who joined the team last year. Fiona will even visit your home to do a ‘mood board’ – a presentation using fabrics, colours and designs to show you how your room could look. She can also advise on spatial design. The fee for the mood board is redeemable when

you commission the work: “A visit can prevent expensive mistakes,” explained Penny. “If you transform a room piecemeal, it can lead to a mismatch, with some pieces just not looking right at all. You can avoid that if you have a plan, which is where Fiona can really help you. “We want people to come in and feel immediately comfortable and welcome so they feel they can ask us anything,” she added. “Part of our success is down to the friendly customer service that people experience. If you know little or nothing about fabrics or designs then pop in for a friendly chat.” In fact, it was through having friendly chats that Fiona went from being a customer to business partner: “I was always coming in here with lists of things I needed for the TV competition and Penny would source them all for me,” explained Fiona, who was tasked with transforming a room selected for her by the show, using a £1,000 budget and in a 48-hour time limit. “I got everything from here – as well as a good supply of tea and coffee. Penny would say to me ‘keep calm, it’ll all be ok’, when I got a bit nervous. She was a massive help – and now here we are working together!” For Fiona, helping people to create the look that they want is one of the reasons why she loves her work so much: “It’s fantastic to be given a blank canvas and then seeing it come to fruition. Brave clients are the best, they’re happy to trust you completely and I love it when they see the end result. There’s nothing more rewarding than having a part to play in people being happy in their own homes, it gives me an enormous amount of satisfaction.” The shop’s expansion is an amazing success story for Penny,

who launched the business in November 2010 initially as a shop specialising in antiques and art: “It’s been a journey, from those early days selling antiques to then doing interiors and now the latest phase of offering a bespoke service as well as continuing to stock all the things our customers expect from us. “By moving the soft furnishings to our new shop, we’ve freed up more space at Number 75. So when customers come here now, they’ll find we have a bigger range of painted furniture and lighting and more throws, one-off items and accessories that they won’t find anywhere else. We do a lot of our sourcing in London, which is why we have items that are a bit different. And our range of Annie Sloan chalk paints are really popular among people who are looking to improve pieces they already have.” Penny and Fiona are sharing their time between the shops and Penny says it’s working well: “Interiors 2 only opened in February but it’s so far, so good,” she said. “And we like the fact that everyone can see Keren at work – everything is made on site and people can see that.” The opening of the second shop couldn’t have been better timed, according to Penny: “We’ve been very busy, which tells us that a lot of people are making improvements to their homes. It also seems that the housing market is getting busier because we are seeing people who’ve just moved. And of course it’s spring, which is traditionally the time of year when people look to freshen things up a bit.” It all combines to ensure the team are busier than ever – and Penny says that’s just how they like it: “We’re very excited about how things are going for us and for Hyde Park in general. It’s a great area and we’re very happy to have our shops here.”

Fresh fare and fabulous views guaranteed at The Hidden Olive Sam Bagshawe - fulfilling a dream with the launch of The Hidden Olive in Sutton Harbour

When Sam Bagshawe got the keys to the ground floor space at 1 Pinnacle Quay on Sutton Harbour, he was fulfilling a lifetime’s dream. The prime location, boasting stunning harbour views with sunsets to match, had become available and Sam was about to turn it into his new café and delicatessen, The Hidden Olive. “I jumped at the chance of getting this place,” said Sam, who’s worked on or around the harbour most of his working life. “It’s always been a dream of mine to have a restaurant with a deli alongside it.” The glass-fronted unit was formerly home to The Lost Side, a skate-wear shop which also had a little café: “I used to be a customer here,” said Sam. “I would come in quite often for a coffee. Now I’m serving the coffee!” Sam took over the lease on December 28 and within three weeks, The Hidden Olive was open. “It was an empty shell and we worked around the clock to get it ready for opening,” he said. “I bought £1,000 of local larch and my dad and I made all the tables and the bar out of it. Everything that’s wood in here has been made by us.” Sam knew from the start the sort of food he wanted to offer: ultra-fresh, locally sourced, top quality and sustainably produced. When we visited Sam, he was busy working on his brand new menu in readiness for its launch on May 1 – and local produce takes pride of place. Artisan charcuterie comes from The Insalting Pig, Yelverton; pickles, jams and preserves are from Hogs Bottom’s, Lifton; the wines include Sharpham Wines from South Devon; juice and honey comes from the Tamar Valley, and jams and ales are from Lustleigh-based Blueberry Bros. The free-range eggs are from a farm just five miles away and, of course, the fish is landed on the other side of the harbour. Plymouth’s very own Devon Coffee and Column Bakehouse

They’ll be able to have a lunchtime or evening meal for £10 or, if they’re with friends, they can select a few different things to share.” Dishes include garlic and paprika prawns; crab with apple and celeriac salad; hot smoked mackerel fish cakes and jam; sticky chicken thighs; hoisin crispy pork; crispy deli meat and cherry salad; chick pea patty, poached egg and smashed avocado with chilli; Camembert, walnut and chive parcel with cranberry sauce; and Ricotta fritter with tomato sauce and olives. The Hidden Olive also has a large breakfast menu which is available from 8am to 3pm and there’s a range of paninis for those looking for a quick snack. Or just enjoy a coffee and a cake.

In the past Sam had his own mobile fishmonger’s business before going to catering college. He also spent a few years working as a yacht deckhand and it was through his connections that he has started a delivery of wines and ciders from Brittany on board the lugger, Grayhound. The three-masted sailing vessel pulls up to the quay right outside The Hidden Olive: “This is what the marina was built for,” said Sam. “I’m hoping the deliveries will be monthly, if the produce proves popular enough.” With an on and off licence to sell alcohol, customers are able to buy the wines and ciders to take home. Sam has given career opportunities to talented young chefs and with his team growing, he hopes to extend opening hours with a full menu in June. Hours are currently 8am to 6pm Mondays to Wednesdays, with the full menu available until 3pm; 8am to 9.30pm Thursdays to Saturdays with a full menu; and 8am to 3pm on Sundays. “We’re closing at 3pm on

The Hidden Olive is another big boost for Sutton Harbour and particularly the side of the harbour that people often overlook despite everything it has to offer. “To my mind, this is the best location in Plymouth,” said Sam. “And as soon as the sun comes around, our outside area is a real sun spot.” Sam admits the past few months have been full-on hard work but he’s enjoying every minute of it: “We’ve got a fantastic team and a great clientele including lots of regulars already. We’ve had some really nice reviews online and we’ve got almost 900 Facebook likes. Plus, I get to see that view every day!” The Hidden Olive is wheelchair-accessible and welcomes children and groups. It also has free wi-fi and is dog-friendly. Visit the Facebook page for regular updates or the new website, due for launch in May.

What is a Home Protection Trust? • What does it protect? • How does it work? • What other assets can it protect? By David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services legal occupation which our specialist Trust Barristers are able to do. Once it is created we transfer your property into the Trust where it is ring fenced and immediately protected from all unforeseen eventualities. The word unforeseen is

crucial. We also know that one day we could run into financial difficulties for no fault of our own, or go into a care home, or cause an accident and be liable for a negligence claim, but provided these things are not anticipated at the time of transfer into trust they are

absolutely protected. Most people want to hand their home down to their children one day and as we get older we start to worry that our children or whoever are our beneficiaries might not inherit, for no fault of ours. A Home Protection Trust

has many more advantages. Property in Trust does not require Probate after we are gone. It is available instantly to our beneficiaries saving the stress of applying for Probate, a long wait of months before anything can be done, and saving Probate costs which can be substantial if a professional is appointed to obtain Probate. Another benefit is that property in Trust cannot be lost to an aggrieved relative, as it cannot be challenged under the 1975 Inheritance Act, which can happen when property is left solely by Will and not protected by a Trust. Other assets can be put into the Trust such as cash savings, shares etc, but not ISAs as they have an individual tax advantage to you.

Hairspray in Westminster Swinging 60s Iolanthe comes to Plymouth

The popular and ever-topical comic opera Iolanthe by Gilbert and Sullivan, comes to Plymouth in May.

Lindy Stephens as Iolanthe and Helen Haviland as the Fairy Queen

The production will be designed once again by the innovative Andy Martin, authentically costumed, with a cascade of 60s dance styles and camp! Iolanthe is one of Sullivan’s greatest scores - ranging from the pomp of the Peers Chorus to beautiful melodies and sparkling wit – performed by a 13-piece professional orchestra and full chorus, conducted by Jane Warwick.

The internationally award-winning Plymouth Gilbert & Sullivan Fellowship will present a new and exciting production of Iolanthe, set in the early 1960s, at the Devonport Playhouse from May 17 to 21. The production will be faithful to the original music and text, but acclaimed director Alan Spencer will add a swinging 60s style, commenting: “This will be a non-traditional concept – set in fairy land with sparkle: think Hairspray meets Westminster!” In the leading roles are Helen Haviland, last seen as Carmen, playing the Queen of the Fairies; Colin Damp, Andy Reid and Sam Wilson make their debuts in principal roles as the Lord Chancellor, Earl Tolloller and Strephon; soprano Bianca Phillips returns as Phyllis. Familiar faces Gareth Davies and Peter Clement have been cast as the Earl of Mountararat and Private Willis, with Lindy Stephens taking the title role, Iolanthe. Also featuring in key supporting roles are newcomer Emma Mills as Celia, Danielle Barter returns as Leila, with Claire Paddison making her debut in a principal role as Fleta.

The free event, which runs from the May 28 to June 3, is being held at various locations around Greenbank, Mutley and Freedom Fields Park. The festival promises to be bigger and better this year, after organisers were given a big boost with a grant from the Big Lottery’s Awards for All Fund. The fund, which provides grants to UK organisations identified the importance of the event in bringing culture and local talent together to celebrate Plymouths diverse communities. With confirmed acts The Scribes, Dub Class, Joanne Cook and Jacob Riddle the family friendly festival aims to provide a safe location with music, entertainment and activities for all ages. Jonathon Spurling, Freedom Community Festival organiser said: “The festival is always celebrated by both the general public and those taking part. It has become an annual favourite gaining positive feedback and is greatly supported by the local community.” Run by volunteers with the support from local companies, the festival has run for over fifteen years. Funding from the Big Lottery means the organisers have extended the event by an extra day and increased the size of the acoustic tent to cater for a bigger audience. Jonathon Spurling added: “A big thank you goes to the Awards for All lottery team and the massive help this contribution will have on us being able to continue to put on a quality community event”.

Over 100 poppies will be used to dress an area in Central Park, outside Plymouth Life Centre, on Sunday May 22 to remember and honour those killed and injured in conflicts since the Great War.

Until May 28 CONVERSATIONS ACROSS ART & MATHEMATICS Peninsula Arts Gallery Art and mathematics have a long historical relationship, as the quote by Pythagoras (570-495BC) suggests. Mathematicians have been drawing and modelling geometric forms as a tool for investigating ideas for centuries and for artists such forms have long been fertile ground for exploring the world around us. In 2015, the London Mathematical Society invited Barry Phipps to devise and curate an ‘Artist Associate’ scheme to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

The monthly family fun day, hosted by LEAP Events, will take place following the cancellation in November 2015 due to storm force weather. The day will feature riders and a display of motorbikes from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch. Riders will be coming from as far as Somerset and Cornwall as well as Devon, on their motorbikes to support the poppy appeal, which is an ongoing cause they raise funds for throughout the year. Annette Laurie of LEAP, a former member of the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserves, and married to a former Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer, said: “We will still have our usual activities for children, including the pony rides, and food and craft stalls, and there will be rousing military music playing all day. “We wanted to remember that the Royal British Legion are there all year round to help serving and former military personnel, in all walks of life, and much of this is done by fundraising via the Poppy Appeal. “We understand that Armistice Day is in November but fund raising for the poppy appeal is continuous and this time we didn’t want to let the weather beat us in raising funds for something which is incredibly close to our hearts.

Talented Tessa takes top art prize Local artist Tessa Jane is celebrating after winning a prestigious art award. Having recently been selected to exhibit at the Oxford International Art Fair Tessa was delighted to win first prize. She was awarded the title, ‘The Best OIAF Artist 2016’ by Joelle Dinnage, from Global Art Agency. He said: "It is a unanimous decision to reward an exceptional artist with hugely diverse talents." Her success is even more praiseworthy given that nearly

200 leading artists exhibited at the Oxford International Art Fair at the end of February. Setting off to find one of Tessa Jane's studios at the Royal William Yard, I met up with her and saw some of her work. As we sat among very attractive and unusual upcycled pieces, she told me how she became a fine art textile specialist. She said: "From childhood, stories have always been very important to me. They have been a key part of my life and every piece of art I produce has a story in it.

"I am fascinated with colour and texture, and I create large and small-scale works from cards, buttons, paper, soft furnishings, fashion accessories and furniture. I like to capture ‘a moment’ - you know like the glint on a kingfishers wings in the sunlight. "I use the sewing machine as a drawing tool along with found and conventional materials. My work has many layers, visually and conceptually, using printed, collaged, drawn, and stitched mixed media. I love to work from poetry and the written word and am nearly always inspired by natural forms.

"I recycle and repurpose. Sourcing discarded objects and making them precious again." Tessa Jane moved down to the West Country 16 years ago. Having completed her constructed textile degree at Birmingham Polytechnic, (now University of Central England) she desperately wanted to interlink more than one discipline. She now stitches, prints and constructs. When exhibiting, Tessa Jane dares to create humble installations. Boxes of recycled floorboard make displays for upcycled furniture, cushions, tea towels, rescued chemical bottles and artwork collaged from discarded papers. Patch-worked chairs are made from hand printed, machine embroidered remnants. Her aim is to send an eco-friendly message to go lightly on the planet and make discarded items precious again. She describes her work as ‘paintings with purpose.’ Tessa explained: "It is not enough for me to create beautiful things. There needs to be a meaning and purpose to my work. Like my hand made shoes called 'Walking through worlds,' I hand printed them from leather left overs. "They represent where we tread, the path we take and that we should go lightly through life. I’m conveying that people need to care about the planet and one another." I noticed several books featured in Tessa’s displays. She told me that when she was very young she loved the gilt edges of bibles and has always had a thing about gold, light and paper. "Whatever I created on paper, | would always try to get onto fabric, and that is the way my work has developed over the years."

BUSINESS MATTERS

Happy 40th to the Plymouth firm that shines like a Beacon!

The original Beacon Blinds building in 1981

It’s 1976. The country is baking in the longest, hottest summer most people can remember; Abba are dominating the charts with Mamma Mia, Fernando and Dancing Queen all hitting Number 1; and in Plymouth a young couple are taking the biggest risk of their lives. For some time, Chris and Sue Higgins have been talking about launching a new business, selling made-to-measure blinds. For Chris, it’s a big call because it would mean leaving his job at Devonport Dockyard. But when a site becomes available just yards from their home in Beacon Park which would be just right for a showroom, it seems like too good an opportunity to miss. Welcome to the world, Beacon Blinds. Forty years on and the family business has grown to five shops across south and west Devon, four specialising in electrical goods plus the original blind shop in Beacon Park that started it all off. It moved a short distance in 1981 to its current showroom in Beacon Park Road, where sons Mark and Nick now oversee operations. Mark was only threeyears-old when the firm was launched but he and his brothers were the biggest reason behind their parents’ decision to open the shop: “Dad started helping a friend to fit blinds in his spare time to earn a bit of extra income because they had a growing family to support,” said Mark. “He was working evenings and weekends and very quickly realised there was potential in the industry so he left the dockyard and set up the company. But it was a big risk. Mum was involved too. She worked in the soft furnishings section and we’ve always retained a made-to-measure curtains service.” These were the days of dark browns and velvet reds and blinds tended to be of the Venetian variety. A lot has changed since then when it comes to shades and styles – and technology: “Safety is paramount these days so we have rod-controlled blinds instead of cords and battery-operated

42\

blinds which are designed with safety and usability in mind,” said Mark. “Heat preservation is another big factor so thermal-lined blinds are increasingly in demand. “In terms of what’s in fashion, shutters are the most popular blinds at the moment. Vertical blinds, which we manufacture ourselves, are also popular and wooden Venetians never go out of fashion.” Whatever you’re looking for, Beacon Blinds, with its completely bespoke service, will be able to help. The shop is the only agent in the region for brand leader Luxaflex and the showroom has a large range for customers to view. There are also blinds for Velux windows and to suit all tastes and budgets. “We’re quite unusual in that we have a showroom and that is very important to us,” said Mark. “People want peace of mind that what they’re investing in looks great and is a quality product. You can’t get that by just looking at a website, which is how the big nationals work. “It’s nice to have examples of all the different blinds and styles and our customers can see them and feel the quality. They can also have a chat with our staff and they’ll be able to get a really good idea of what would work for them.” Once you’ve made your choice, Beacon Blinds offers a free measuring and fitting service. Among the firm’s high profile clients is the National Trust’s Lanhydrock House in Cornwall, where they supply and maintain the roller blinds. But most of Beacon Blinds’ customers are homeowners who know all about them: “A lot of our business comes from repeat customers and recommendations and we’re very proud of that,” said Mark. “It’s all about offering a quality of service from start to finish, including our after sales service, and maintaining those high standards. Our reputation with our customers is why we’re still here after 40 years – and we’d like to say ‘thank you’ to them for their continued support.” Another reason for the longevity, he says, is the staff,

led by shop manageress Elaine West: “A business can only succeed if it has excellent staff. A lot of the success is down to the quality of the personal service and the knowledge and helpfulness of our shop team and our fitters. We will always give the best advice on the best products for customers’ requirements and budgets and we’ll always look after their ongoing needs.” Chris and Sue have remained directors of the firm and have always helped out where they can. The only member of the family not involved is middle brother, Andrew, who opted to become a trained physiotherapist in the city instead. “I don’t think mum and dad would ever have thought Nick

and I would be here running the business 40 years down the line,” said Mark. “We feel as though we are part of the community, which is nice – and long may it continue.” Beacon Blinds will be having some special 40th anniversary promotions to mark the occasion … so watch this space!

Richard said: "As far as lettings are concerned we have dedicated property managers working in all of our offices who provide a single point of contact for landlords and tenants alike. "We have also appointed Cheryl Rueben as our area manager for lettings. She works with all the property managers and oversees our growing portfolio of managed properties." James said that the marketing of new homes was now an increasingly important part of the business. "We have established a dedicated new homes team and are talking to a lot of developers and national house builders. "We have two major projects in the pipeline for 2016 and in recent months we have successfully marketed Victoria Court in Stoke - a development of 27 apartments - and also been involved with a major development of 58 apartments in Millfields. "We see this as an important growth opportunity for Lang Town & Country and are confident that we can provide developers with an outstanding service. We are not ruling out further expansion in the future." Investment in training has continued apace with several staff on both the lettings and estate agency side of the business currently working towards achieving professional qualifications.

Growing Plymouth firm Sponge UK soaking up success They’ve been named one of the best small companies to work for in the UK; they’re multi-award winners for their excellence and innovation; they have a client list that reads like a who’s who of top global brands; and they’re based right here in Plymouth. why Louise has launched a new recruitment drive. Some 40% of the company’s staff are graduates from the University of Plymouth and she hopes to be able to fill the latest vacancies with more local talent. They’ll be joining in the knowledge that this year, Sponge UK made it into the Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For, based on a rigorous survey completed by members of staff themselves. Plymouth-born Alex Stewart, 35, has been with Sponge UK from the beginning. He’s now the company’s Head of Design: “When I started out, I thought I’d have to leave the city to develop my career,” said Alex. “But at Sponge I’ve worked with some of the world’s biggest brands, reached thousands with my designs and created a whole design team. I think many people don’t realise these kinds of opportunities are available in Plymouth.” Among the more recent recruits are Paddy Selman and Jenny Stanley, who both joined the company 18 months ago. Paddy, 23, is a digital art and technology graduate from the University of Plymouth and is currently using motion graphics to create an animation for a programme: “It’s a dream job really,” he said. “I’m doing what I enjoy and I get to work with all sorts of different brands. And there’s a great team dynamic here, a very supportive environment.” Jenny, 28, is from Somerset and has a degree in graphic design: “I have a very creative job and it’s rewarding when your clients tell you they’re really pleased with what you’ve done. You get lots of help from your colleagues, it’s like you’re part of a family,” she added. With technology making more and more things possible and with higher expectations about what is achievable, Louise says that moving forward means constantly anticipating and innovating. She relishes the challenge: “I want us to be the leaders in Europe. Over 30% of our work is in Europe and it makes sense for us to grow a presence there and to expand our remote office in London. That would be the next natural step.” It seems that this particular Plymouth success story is set to run!

TRAVEL MATTERS

Traditionally, we have now entered the ‘late booking period’ in the travel industry. I use the term loosely, as a late booking can mean a few days before you go, or a few months. Tour operators such as Thomson and Thomas Cook have, in the past, reduced the cost of holidays the closer you book to your departure date. Hence, clients asking for a ‘late booking deal’. This has changed a lot in recent years as, apart from the tour operators mentioned above, airlines such as Easyjet, Ryanair and Flybe have lower prices if you book earlier, rather than later, to fill their planes and guarantee income at an earlier stage. This also helps to avoid the cancellation of flights due to low capacity. This year’s booking pattern is different to normal as it’s not necessarily the price, but the destination, that is determining choice. The well-publicised problems in By Travel Expert Egypt and Tunisia have made Anthony Goord other destinations much more popular. Therefore, the cost of holidays to destinations such as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands will increase in price as the demand grows. Destinations such as Turkey are struggling to sell, and in comparison will be much more competitive. When looking to book your summer holiday it's always a good idea to ask your travel agent to check alternative destinations, as the less popular ones could save you hundreds of pounds with the quality of hotel being far superior than other options. This month I also have a few important travel updates

48\

The Plymouth Magazine May 2016

to give you, with reference to certain destinations, which you may not be aware of:

FOR THE USA

From April 1 all passengers must have this symbol on their passport to visit the USA. This symbol for biometrics is usually printed on the cover of passports. Also known as a e-passport, epassport or a digital passport. These are a combined paper and electronic passport which contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of travellers. This should only effect people that have passports over nine years old but is worth checking in order to avoid problems at the airport.

FOR VIETNAM

After last month’s fascinating article by my brother, about his holiday to Vietnam and Cambodia, we have had many requests for holidays to this part of the world. Until June 30 this year you did not require a visa to visit Vietnam. This, unfortunately, has changed. As from July 1 you will need to apply for a ‘Vietnam Visa Approval Letter’ ready for your arrival in the country. The system to apply is quite straight forward; Firstly, apply for your Visa Approval letter on at www.vietnam-evisa.org/apply-visa.html - Receive a visa approval via email (attached with an entry and exit form) - Print out the letter for entry and exit - Fill out the entry and exit form - Prepare two passport size photos 4x6cm plus you will need either $25 for single visa or $50 for a multiple entry visa as a stamping fee - Put all the above in your passport and have them ready to give to the Immigration officer at your Vietnam arrival airport

FOR CANADA

Until March 15 if you arrived by air in Canada you were required to obtain an electronic visa on-line before arrival. Due to a lot of confusion the Canadian authorities have relaxed this regulation until the autumn, stating that travellers who don’t have an eTA can board their flight, as long as they have appropriate travel documents (eg a valid passport). During this time, border services officers can let travellers arriving without an eTA into the country as long as they meet all other requirements to enter the country. i.e at least six months’ validity left on your passport. There are so many changes in regulations and visas travelling to countries throughout the world that I would strongly recommend you always check with your travel agent to see if your passport is valid, and if you require any extra documentation. If you do not have a British passport it is your responsibility to check with your own embassy, and the country you are visiting, for entry requirements. It may not be the same as a British passport holder, so this must be checked before booking. When booking on-line you should always be notified if a visa is needed, although this doesn’t always happen, and I’ve heard of many travellers being turned away at airports because they have not applied for a visa, or their passports were not valid for the minimum duration required. Ultimately, it is YOUR responsibility to have all the correct documents for whichever country you are visiting. You have been warned! Happy Holidays! www.cornerstonevision.com

TRAINING MATTERS

Mark Boulting

Changing face of apprenticeships Earlier this year the government announced legislation that will ensure all young people are made aware of the career opportunities offered by apprenticeships as part of measures to put choice at the heart of what is offered. Here Mark Boulting, managing director of Plymouthbased apprenticeship training provider, Skills Group, talks about why more young people should think about the apprenticeship route. Apprenticeships have a long tradition in the UK having been around since the 12th century. It isn’t that long ago that parents would approach employers and pay them to give their child, usually a boy, an apprenticeship. There was often no wage, as your employment paid for your training, board and lodging, and your apprenticeship would last for seven years. Initially apprenticeships tended to be in the construction, papermaking and printing industries, later becoming available in engineering and shipbuilding. Fortunately times have changed, and we now have an education system that offers all our young people the opportunity to take up an apprenticeship in a whole variety of industry sectors, opening doors to some amazing career prospects. However, apprenticeships are still overshadowed by some out-dated views, and while increasingly parents see the value

of an apprenticeship, they see this for other people’s children and not their own! So let me tell you about one young lady whose apprenticeship training has helped her rise through the ranks of a well-known local firm of specialist jewellery insurance brokers. Ten years ago, Nicola White was the first apprentice to be employed through Skills Group by Yelverton-based TH March. Nicola, now aged 29 of Southway, started out as an audio typist in 2006. Ten years later and she’s now an account handler and underwriter in a highly skilled team handling insurance quotes for customers’ high value jewellery. Nicola had felt she was in danger of becoming ‘stuck in a rut’ after leaving college, when she saw a Skills Group advert for the business apprenticeship opening at TH March. Jumping at every opportunity she has been offered since, Nicola has been promoted through the company to her current position. She has just started her Advanced Apprenticeship in Management in the hope of eventually becoming a team leader. Skills Group now offer higher level qualifications in all the apprenticeship areas we provide training for. This is in response to requests from the employers we work with. They need to be able to continue training their staff in supervisory and management roles specific to the needs of their business. I hope these new Level 4 and 5

Plymouth-based Skills Group provide a range of apprenticeship training opportunities

qualifications will also appeal to those young people who are considering either an apprenticeship or university. Nicola is just one of many examples of local young people Skills Group has helped onto the career ladder in their chosen profession. We try to make becoming an apprentice a simple process. We have a dedicated website, apprenticeships4me.com, where we list all our current vacancies – at the time of writing we have over 180 jobs available in business administration, care and early years, construction, engineering and automotive, hairdressing and barbering, sport and leisure, and teaching and education across Devon and Cornwall. After spotting your dream job, all you need to do is click the ‘apply now’ button and provide some basic information. Then, the team at Skills Group will get in touch and run through what is required from you and any other vacancies they feel may be of interest. It’s a bit like a matching service – we know what the employer is looking for and, from talking to you, we know what you’re hoping to achieve, so we match you to the best job and the best employer for you!

However, if you decide you are not yet ready for employment, we also run learn2work, a pre-apprenticeship programme. This is designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship or employment in a specific industry sector, and will help you develop the skills and attributes you need to succeed. So whatever your career aspirations may be, please talk to us about how an apprenticeship might help you achieve them. Bear in mind that increasingly employers are favouring apprentices over graduates, and that while you are an apprentice you are ‘being paid to learn your trade’. With training centres in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Plympton, Skills Group have the highest success rates for apprenticeships in the South West (Skills Funding Agency national success rate tables 2013/14).

BUSINESS MATTERS

Fizz Bug Programme launches in Plymouth Fizz Bug founders Mark Nesbitt and Kate Leadbeater with their baby daughter Alice and her sister Sophia

A business that designs bespoke programmes of physical activity and nutritional advice for primary schools across Plymouth was officially launched recently, on the same day as it’s owners second baby also decided to make an early appearance! Fizz Bug is the brainchild of Mark Nesbitt and Katie Leadbeater who after years of targeting the weight-loss

needs of adults through their FIT Bootcamp, realised that the only way to combat the increasingly evident national health issues of obesity and diabetes, was to reach the children first. Fizz Bug guides and encourages primary-aged children and their families with programmes of fitness and nutrition by working with schools and care providers across Plymouth. The programmes are typically paid for from the various existing Government sources such as Pupil Premium - the

BUSINESS MATTERS £150 million a year PE and sport funding pot that is helping to improve primary school sports provision. This means that Fizz Bug programmes are provided at no additional cost to schools or parents and take place within the school day, in after-school clubs and in holiday With new sports funding streams also announced in the Chancellor's recent Budget Fizz Bug couldn’t have been launched at a better time. Former Royal Navy PT instructor Mark Nesbitt said: “What we do shows proven benefits in more than just fitness and health - it also positively impacts confidence, discipline, respect, concentration and is a holistic solution across the student range. "Fizz Bug will be making a significant difference to the lives of children across Plymouth and Devon. Our Mission is to enthuse, encourage and educate in the positive benefits of physical activity and good nutrition, enabling better achievement and a healthier life – to light a fire that will burn for a lifetime.” Nine out of ten primary schools have improved the quality of PE lessons thanks to the £150 million PE and sport premium, new research has shown. The fund, introduced in 2013, goes directly to primary school headteachers who can use it however they want, to provide PE and sporting activities for pupils. Fizz Bug will be a way of schools being able to facilitate the education in an effective and comprehensive way, without adding to the considerable curriculum pressures that teachers already feel. After leaving the Royal Navy after a 20 year career, Mark set about utilising his skills in the civilian world, motivating people to make more of their physical potential and changing the shape of their lives. Driven to make a difference, he set up a successful ‘Fit

Camp’ business aimed at the corporate market, but came to realise as a parent that his true motivation lay in promoting life-time fitness and behaviour-change in young people. Kate’s career has spanned massage therapy and running a beauty business. But it was working closely with personal trainers and nutritionists that ignited a passion for passing on the life-changing and life-saving knowledge to others; like Mark, Kate saw that it all starts with children and began developing the Fizz Bug programme to pass on her passion for healthy food. The launch of Fizz Bug is the culmination of many months of research, development and planning, including a pilot scheme within schools in Plymouth. Mr Smith, PE co-ordinator of Leighham Primary School commented; "The children have been fully enthused, captivated and in fact upset when their time with Mark is over! "He has been professional and formed fantastic relationships with all the children. The whole process has been a brilliant and informative experience for all children involved." The business launched at the end of March, and the website went live just as the couple’s daughter was born a few weeks early. Kate said; “What perfect timing! We have been working on this business for some time - and it is all down to the passion we have for making Plymouth a healthier place to grow and learn. "Our beautiful new daughter Alice will join her sister Sophia in a city that will be starting that journey, with our help - and we are very proud of that.”

GARDENING MATTERS

‘Recipes’ which can help spectacular hanging After the cool, wet and stormy spring we’ve had this year, things have been a little slower to get going, but now that we are in May, things are really going to get growing. It is now safe to plant out all those tender plants that we love so much without fear of frost damage. We can get out there and clear out our pots and baskets and revitalise them with fresh colour that will last right throughout the summer and well into the autumn. We get a lot of people coming into the garden centre looking for advice on what to plant in their hanging baskets and pots, how to do it and what plant combinations to use. To try and make things easy for beginners or those who feel overwhelmed, we teamed up with a plant nursery in Cornwall called Kernock Park Plants who launched a range of tub and basket plants through us called Proven Winners a few years ago. This range of plants has gone from strength to strength and are getting more and more popular each year. There are three recipes consisting of three plants: Bermuda Skies which consists of a Surfinia Salmon, Lobelia Blue White Eye, and a Calibrachoa Superbells Lemon Slice; All Fired Up consists of Calibrachoa Superbells Orange, Nemesia Sunsatia Pomelo and Verbena Scarlet lace; Purple Haze consists of Surfinia Bordeaux, Surfinia Royal Velvet and Verbena Lilac Blue. Each of these plants has gone through rigorous trials and tests to determine their ease of growth, robustness, weather resistance, vigour and flower power. Due to this, the plants are of the highest quality and put on a fantastic display right through the summer. For a 35cm (14ins) hanging basket or pot, choose the recipe you like and pick one plant of each variety and that will be enough to fill it. Three plants doesn’t seem like much, but they grow incredibly quickly and produce masses of flowers. For such an incredible display, it really is very simple to do and requires very little effort and hardly any knowledge. Anybody can do it. Simply choose your basket or pot, fill it with a good quality compost (we use Westland’s Multipurpose compost with added John Innes, because it is less prone to drying out), mix in some a handful

of slow release fertiliser and some water retaining crystals. Now dig three holes the same size as the plants pots equal distance apart around the edge of your container, remove the plants from their pots, place them in the holes and firm the compost around them. Water well and place them in pride of place, it’s that simple! Dead head and water regularly and it will look amazing for months. If that seems to complicated, then there is an even easier way to get amazing baskets and pots. There is a range of plants called Confetti Pots that have three plants grown together in the same pot. These again will be tough and vigorous plants that grow well together. They come in a wide range of colours and all you have to do is fill your container with compost and make dig a single hole in the middle, take the plant out of the pot and place in the hole, firm the compost around it down, water and it’s done, it really is that easy. If that still feels a bit too daunting, we always have a great range of ready made baskets and pots available in store to buy, so there in no excuse not to have beautiful containers in your garden this summer. A question we get asked a lot is ‘I want to fill my pots and baskets with summer colour, but they will be in shade, can I grow anything in shade?’ Well the answer to that is yes, there is a whole range of plants that not only grow well in shade, but thrive actually in shade or completely depend on it. They will burn and shrivel up if exposed to too much sun. The best bedding plants to use for shady spots are Impatiens Busy Lizzies, New Guinea Impatiens, Begonias, Mimulus, Pansies, Violas, Fuchsias, Lysimachia and in dappled

shade, Nicotiana. These all perform extremely well in shade, provided they get some light and aren’t in complete darkness. As well as using bedding plants, I’d recommend mixing them up with some shade loving shrubs and herbaceous perennials to give a bit more interest, height, shape and texture for a truly outstanding display. Hosts, Ferns, Heucheras, Euphorbias, Foxgloves, Astilbes, Hydrangeas and Acers all look great in the the summer and thrive in shaded sites. Use bedding as underplanting or companion planting for them and you will turn those difficult, dull shady patches into focal points and beauty. Make this the year you transform that dark patch you don’t know what to do with! May is the month where some of our most classic and treasured herbaceous perennials will perform to their full glory and put on a spectacular show. It is also Chelsea Flower Show this month and most of the garden designers there use a few of these reliable stalwarts every year, simply because, they are reliable, guaranteed to look amazing throughout M0ay and beyond and are a classic partnership. Lupins and Geums flower for a long time and go hand in hand. They like the same growing conditions, flower at the same time, grow to a similar height and look fantastic together. They are both great at attracting wildlife into the garden and both come in a great range of complimentary colours, but if you want something a bit more special and eye catching, then you should pair up a purple Lupin with an orange Geum. The contrasting colours just work perfectly together and it’s a pairing that won’t disappoint. Another classic and reliable combination of plants to grow together that are always featured at Chelsea are Bearded Irises, Oriental Poppies and hardy Geraniums. They all love poor, sun baked, free draining soil and are low maintenance. The classic Spend £10 on Vegetable combination would be to combine the Plants and receive pastel coloured plants together, such as a blue 1 bag of Westland Iris with a pink Poppy Vegetable Compost and a purple Geranium spreading at their worth £5.99 FREE feet, but why not try something a bit bolder, Valid from 01/05/2016 – 31/05/2016 pair up a deep purple only with this voucher.
