Mike aims for peak performance in his big fund-raising challenge A Chaddlewood father of two is setting his sights on climbing Africa’s highest mountain - and raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process. Mike Crawford, 36, is taking part in a sponsored trek of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in aid of Parkinsons UK inspired by his father, who has the disease. Mike’s father John was diagnosed with Parkinsons seven years ago at the age of 53 and two years ago he took part in a similar challenge, trekking Machu Pichu in Peru. Mike said: “Like many others, I was unaware of exactly what kind of debilitating illness Parkinsons is. My father continues to be an inspiration to me while he adapts and continues ‘living’ with Parkinsons. “Even following his diagnosis, he has remained positive,

continuing with his charity work, taking part in 10k road races and even trekking in Peru, despite his body working against him. “This inspiring attitude has convinced me to take on the challenge of a lifetime and I have committed to climbing Kilimanjaro both to raise awareness of Parkinsons and to raise much needed funds to carry on the great work which Parkinson UK do to help improve the quality of life for people like my father - and hopefully one day find a cure,” said construction manager Mike. Mike has embarked on a major fund raising campaign and has already reached his initial target of £4,000 and now hopes to raise £5895 - £1 for every metre of Kilimanjaro, equivalent to 19,300 feet. A hugely successful charity race night at the Chaddlewood Inn in July helped provide a major boost to Mike’s total. Mike said: “Rob Buckley, the manager of the Chaddlewood Inn has been fantastic with his support and encouragement. “Rob provided the buffet and a magician free of charge to help make the race night a big success. Rob is also organising a charity football match and poker night to help raise funds. He has been fantastic.” Mike’s challenge will be no walk in the park. It will be a gruelling six day trek up the mountain walking for up to 12 hours a day in temperatures ranging from 30 degrees to minus 20 degrees.

The fund-raisers in training for their big charity trek

“This will in itself pose many challenges, but the greatest will be dealing with and adapting to altitude sickness, which often proves too much to overcome,” he said.

Plymstock student Kate wins Rotary Award

Presenting the award to Kat at the Smithaleigh Hotel, President of Plympton Rotary Club, Darren Hands said: “I am doubly delighted to have made this presentation. First of all, the work that Kat has done ties in really well with one of my charities this year - the Royal Marine’s Charitable Trust Fund and secondly Kat has just left the same school I went to albeit I left a ‘few’ years ago. It is great to see the work youngsters like Kat do get the recognition it so rightly deserves”. Thanking Plympton Rotary Club, Kat said ‘This award serves the purpose of raising awareness of our film and our goal. We hope that children will have a better understanding from teachers in schools - they do not want to be singled out. However there is an ever growing need for understanding that we hope this film can produce.’

Mike has set up a Just Giving page which ensures that all donations are received directly by Parkinsons UK and remain secure. His page can be found at www.justgiving.com/ Michael-Crawford 3

A family-run removals firm in Plympton has more than doubled its workforce after taking on a new storage unit with financial backing from NatWest. The 2,000 sq ft base on Bell Close will allow Cambridge Removals and Storage to offer its clients warehouse space, rather than outsource storage to other providers.

Kat Goodsell receives the Ted Osmond Award from Plympton Rotary Club President Darren Hands

Kat’s involvement in this project was enabled through the MOD support fund. The cost of the project itself was through Fixers. None of it would have been possible without Kat’s drive, enthusiasm and creativity. She and her fellow students have already received the Diana Award and the Young Adults Volunteer Award for their work.

HALL FOR HIRE Large hall for hire various days and times St Peters Lutheran Church, Plympton. Free car park. Call 0780 5427610 for more details.

“The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7-8

Mike will be in a party of about 20 fund-raisers taking part in the trek - some of whom suffer with Parkinsons.

Big growth for Plympton removals business

The achievements of a student of Plymstock School have been recognised by Plympton Rotary Club. Kat Goodsell, currently in Year 13, was presented with the Ted Osmond Award which each year recognises an outstanding young person from the Plymouth area. Kat wanted to raise awareness of the particular needs of children in Service families. With help from the charity “Fixers”, and three other students, she produced a DVD for teachers, which they promoted at conferences in the UK and Germany.

The expansion has already led to Cambridge Removals hiring two new driving and removals staff, bringing its total workforce to five employees. Another three posts will be created when the warehouse is operating. Jason Day, who runs the business with wife Kelly, said: “We are trying to create solutions to problems caused throughout everyday life. “There is great demand - people outgrow their homes, or they sell up and there is a slight delay in the chain and they want to use storage rather than lose the sale, or a customer might order goods which arrive before they are ready to take delivery of them. “This is helping us grow as a business.” Bradley Bryant, NatWest relationship manager, added: “The new unit will add a whole new dimension to the way the company operates and I look forward to seeing Cambridge Removals go from strength to strength.” Megabowl demolition - see page ?

Congratulations to the winners of our Goals Soccer competition which appeared in the June issue. First prize of a children’s party for 12 people was won by Harry Smyth. Two runner up prizes, for five free coaching sessions went to Nick Phillips and Mrs Kate Trenberth.

Opportunity knocks for young musicians

Plymouth Music Accord have launched a new scheme to give young musicians and singers in the Plymouth area an opportunity to rehearse and perform with an orchestra or choir.

The scheme, called The Young Musicians’ Internship, is supported by Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, Carlton Big Band, Plymouth Philharmonic Choir and South West Chamber Choir. Young musicians and singers can apply to join one of these and will be mentored for a concert through rehearsal and public performance. In addition to the Internship the project fits extremely well with PMA’s activities for young people, which include: • Funding tickets to enable school children to attend live concerts. This includes paying for parents/teachers to accompany them where necessary

Symphony Orchestra in a concert titled Spanish Connections at the Guildhall in June. This was a wonderful experience for a young performer to play with experienced musicians in addition to being mentored, as a full orchestra can be daunting to a newcomer. After his first performance Lawrence said: “After having seen the PSO live at the Guildhall, I was inspired to join as I knew it would be enjoyable and more challenging than the youth ensembles I am currently involved with. The internship scheme helped me along with the process and the conductor was happy to have me join. The trumpet section was welcoming and I had no trouble fitting in although it would be great if more talented young people were to join.

Lawrence Cooper

• Selective funding for musical instrument tuition in secondary schools – now covering three schools and involving some 40 children • The Young Musician’s Platform which funds a first professional contract for young aspiring musicians who reach an appropriate standard The first of PMA’s young musicians, Lawrence Cooper of Lipson Community College, played with the Plymouth and contemporary world music.Good for mind, body and spirit. PRIDE & JOY

Are you batty about bats? Fancy a bit of art in the park or some meadow magic in Whitleigh? People are being asked to hug their park as part of the national ‘Love Parks Week’ a celebration of all that’s green and pleasant in Plymouth. An exciting programme of events, which started on Friday July 25 and runs until August 3, gives families and young people plenty to do in the great outdoors in and around Plymouth during the summer holiday. Tons of events are going on all over the city and range from bug hunts, to a ‘bioblitz’, getting to grips with scythes as well as free tennis sessions and bike rides. And as Britain’s Ocean City is also proud of its blue space as well as its green space, there are also activities on the shores of Plymouth Sound and the banks of the River Tamar. Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “Plymouth has so much green space – we want to encourage people to visit the areas and try out new activities “We have worked incredibly hard with many different organisations to make the most of all our parks and open spaces and encourage more people to get involved. “Love Parks Week is a chance to celebrate the amazing space we have on our doorstep and all the incredible work that goes on all year round to keep it amazing. “Over the last year, for instance, Ham Woods and Radford Woods have both been designated ‘Local Nature Reserves’ which means legal protection for both for future generations.”

Countdown to fireworks championships

Six of the UK’s best pyrotechnics companies are busy preparing for an explosive showdown with less than a month to go before the British Firework Championships returns to Plymouth Hoe. Visitors from all over the world will be coming to see the skies light up above Plymouth’s spectacular waterfront on Tuesday August 12 and Wednesday August 13. Hosted by The Event Services Association (TESA) and Plymouth City Council in association with The Herald and the University of St Mark & St John, the Championships celebrate their 18th anniversary this year and are one of the biggest annual displays put on by professional firework companies anywhere in the UK. Tens of thousands of Plymouth residents and holiday makers will head to the Hoe for two evenings of family entertainment, each culminating in three spectacular fireworks displays. More than four tonnes of fireworks will light up the skies as the country’s top pyrotechnics companies battle it out to be named the British Fireworks Champion 2014. Entertainment will be starting from 6.30pm each evening, courtesy of Heart Radio. There will also be fairground rides and refreshment stalls and the first firework displays will start at around 9.30pm each evening as dusk falls. Down the Rabbit Hole at Plymstock Library Children enjoyed a mad hatter’s tea party of a literary kind over half term when Plymstock Library hosted an Alice in Wonderland themed activity morning as part of a drive to introduce a new generation to children’s classics, writes Eliza Stevens. Whilst many children will have seen the various film versions of Alice, the original words offer a more compelling, surreal experience. Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale is the story of how young Alice finds herself in a magical world after she follows a white rabbit,

encountering frog footmen, hookah- smoking caterpillars and a cook who tries to calm her screaming child with pepper only to find it transformed into a pig. Alice famously concludes that the infant ‘would have made a dreadfully ugly child, but makes a rather handsome pig’. We have probably all met children like that. After listening to part of the story detailing a tea party in which the tea pot is occupied by a dormouse, children decorated a table cloth and made pocket watches and rabbit book marks. Isabel Williams (6) had come all the way from upstate New York to join in the fun (and to visit her granny).

It was Lincoln Kyte’s first time at a library event, for him the best thing was ‘making rabbits’. The world of libraries has changed beyond all recognition. Forget childhood memories of being told to keep quiet – these days libraries are friendly welcoming places, serving coffee alongside internet access and a range of groups for people of all ages. The youngest bookworms can get started at Rhymetime every Thursday at 2.15 at Plymstock Library. Older readers can join Chatterbooks – a monthly kids book club. Call in to the library to find out more.

Growing support for Lidl supermarket plan on Megabowl site Over 550 people have signed a petition supporting plans by discount supermarket chain Lidl to create a food store in Plympton. Lidl is submitting a joint planning application for a new neighbourhood discount food store and a Home Bargains variety discount retailer on land formerly occupied by the Megabowl bowling alley on Plymouth Road in Plympton. The former Megabowl building has remained vacant for the last few years and is currently being demolished. The single-storey Lidl store is proposed to have a net sales area of nearly 10,000 sq feet with more than 70 parking spaces. Lidl will employ up to 40 full and part-time staff who will be sourced locally.

A spokesman for the company said: “Lidl’s limited range of products and modest turnover will ensure that any impact on Plympton is minimal. A discount food store on the former Megabowl site may also claw-back shopping trips made to the out-of-centre Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores.” Home Bargains are a variety discount retailer, selling a range of bulky and non-bulky comparison goods, with an ancillary but fundamental range of ambient food and drink products. They carry a wide range of top quality, high street brands – from health and beauty products to household goods, food, toys and much more. Lidle is expected to shortly publish a full set of development plans and launch a website as part of a comprehensive public consultation exercise.

Elburton homes development attracts plenty of interest Home-hunters pulled on their wellies for a special preview event showcasing the exclusive range of houses available at Taylor Wimpey’s Dunstone Gardens development in Elburton – where just nine properties remain for sale. The highly successful Welly Walk gave prospective purchasers the chance to get on site to view the plots that are available and appreciate the development’s fantastic location neighbouring Dunstone Woods. Janine Copleston, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey, said: “The event was a huge success and gave visitors the chance to experience the wonderful setting the new homes will enjoy.

Prom time at Hannahs

To make moving even easier and more affordable, Taylor Wimpey offers a range of helpful homebuyer incentives for purchasers in a range of circumstances including Help to Buy and Part Exchange.

All the children and young adults from Hannahs in Ivybridge headed to Hannahs at Seale-Hayne for the annual Prom ion July.

Help to Buy enables eligible first-time buyers and those with a property to sell to secure a Government loan for up to 20% of their new home’s full price – so they only need a 75% loan-to-value mortgage and a deposit as low as 5%.

Dressed up in their finery, they all posed for photos next to a vintage Austin 7 in the beautiful quad. They also had fun dressing up and posing in the photo booth. There was plenty of delicious food and live music from Hannahs very own band, Hannahs All Stars, as well as music from DJ Nicola Roberts, who works at Seale-Hayne.

Dunstone Gardens is located off Springfield Close, and neighbours the picturesque Dunstone Woods. Within a short walk are the village facilities of Elburton, including shops, supermarkets, a post office, pubs and places to eat.

“Discerning purchasers are moving quickly to secure their favourite plots at the development, so I would strongly advise anyone hoping to make Dunstone Gardens their home to act without delay.”

Parents will appreciate the choice of schools for children of all ages within walking distance, including Elburton Primary School and Coombe Dean School for secondary age students, which were both rated ‘outstanding’ in their most recent Ofsted inspections.

Among the properties remaining for sale at Dunstone Gardens are four-bedroom houses priced from £425,000 and five-bedroom designs from £435,000.

Local author’s big donation of books to support Woodside A generous local author has responded to a charity appeal by donating 1000 brand new books to their cause. Children’s writer Sarahjane Funnell, has gifted the books, about a little girl called Phillipa Fairy Cake to the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust. Sarahjane said: “Willow, my rescue cat was with us for nineteen years and I clearly remember how kind Woodside staff were when we went to adopt her. When I read that the sanctuary was in need of saleable products, I wanted to help and gave them the books.” ‘The Secret Pets’ Tea Party’ even includes rescue dogs Bon Bon and Pickles who, like Woodside’s Roxy in the picture, enjoy a magical picnic. Roxy is four years old and came to Woodside when her

owner became ill and could no longer look after her. The charity is currently struggling to care for around 200 animals, the vast majority being unwanted cats and kittens. Woodside Trust founder Carole Bowles said: “Sarahjane’s lovely books are on sale now in all our charity shops, they normally retail at £7.99 but we are selling them for only £1.50. Her wonderfully kind donation will go a long way to help us to care for the 150 plus cats we have on-site. Not all are healthy enough, or old enough for adoption, but we always have large numbers needing loving homes.” Woodside is appealing for all owners to neuter their pets, especially cats, as they can reproduce at only five months of age. There is a low-cost scheme for owners on benefit or state pension, and save & pay savings stamps for everyone. Simply ring 01752 347503 between 11am and 5pm for information.

Over a thousand people turned out at Newnham Park in July to join in Plymouth’s first HOLI ONE festival. After much anticipation, music lovers soaked up a packed day of colour, sun, excitement and entertainment from a host of DJs. Stephan Dau, founder of HOLI ONE Colour Festivals, was amazed at the turnout. He said: “We were overwhelmed with the number of people who attended the event. Newnham Park has provided the perfect venue for people to celebrate the colour of everyday life with their friends! ”

Newnham’s colourful festival...

Against a backdrop of dance and DJ music, revellers at HOLI ONE threw powders into the air to create an explosion of colour and excitement aimed at celebrating togetherness and the colour of everyday life. Last year, HOLI ONE Colour festivals were attended by 100,000 people worldwide and took place across cities and countries that included London, South Africa and Berlin.

The Plymouth man, in his 40s, sustained minor cuts and bruises. Police are now seeking the cyclist who is described as white, around 6ft 3ins tall, of medium build and wearing a red top and black cycling shorts. Inspection report praise for Waypoints staff and care The needs of residents are always put first by staff – just one of the many comments praising the care at Waypoints care home during an unannounced inspection visit. The Care Quality Commission inspectors made a routine inspection to the 64-bed specialist dementia care home in Plymouth in June and found all the essential quality and safety standards they checked for were met. The inspectors spoke to 12 staff members, seven relatives and met 20 people who used the services provided at the home in St Budeaux. In a published report of their findings the CQC inspectors said they observed ‘warmth and affection’ displayed by the home staff towards the residents and staff showed understanding, patience and enabled people to do things at their own pace. Other aspects of care highlighted for praise in the CQC report include: • Plenty of choice for residents • Staff listened to residents who were able to express their own views • Privacy and dignity of residents was routinely respected and upheld • Staff paid due regard to people’s age, religion and cultural background and recognised each resident as an individual • All the care plans checked by the inspectors were very clear and detailed; and staff understood the needs of the residents and how those needs should be met • The safety and welfare of residents was ensured by the planning and delivery of care and treatment Waypoints Plymouth Care Home manager Tessa Marriott said: “The inspection findings reflect our ethos which very much puts first the needs of the residents we look after. “The inspectors saw this for themselves but also heard from the relatives how much they value the warmth and professionalism of our staff. “We are also delighted to hear that our staff spoke so positively about their experience of working at this home and how much they value the training and support we give them. “Being described by residents as ‘five star’ is a great accolade for the whole staff team and they should be very proud of their achievement.” The full inspection report can be viewed at www.cqc.org.uk

Dealing with the problem of cracked heels With the beautiful summer weather we’ve been having in Plymouth recently, many of us have gone into the back of the wardrobe and dusted off the sandals myself, included. The problem with this is that many of us have ended up with dry, cracked heels which if left untreated can become a source of pain and can become unsightly and embarrassing; they may even lead to an infection. The good news is that this can be easily resolved with a little help. Cracked heels are more common than you think and there are many causes. As well as sandals flip flops, open-backed shoes, slippers or even walking around in your bare feet can all contribute to the heels becoming dry and thickened. Skin loses its suppleness and elasticity and will eventually start to split. In some cases this will lead to large open and bleeding cracks. Cracked heels are most common in people who have: • gained a few extra pounds, or are pregnant • wear ill fitting shoes that don’t support the heel from spreading, or who walk on the back of a shoe which is too small • suffer fungal infections in the feet • a deficiency of minerals and vitamins • hormonal conditions such as Thyroid or an estrogen imbalance • impaired circulation; or who have to • stand for long periods on hard floors Medical conditions can also cause cracked /dry, hard skin including: • diabetes • psoriasis/eczema • dermatitis You may even be affected if you take diuretics or have genetic skin conditions.

What can you do? The easy way to manage your feet if they have minor cracks is to get into a daily routine using a moisturiser morning and night not only in the summer months, but also in the winter. If you don’t like too much cream on your feet whilst wearing sandals, moisturise around the heel edges to stop you slipping around in your footwear. Using a foot file or pumice stone when the feet are dry (not wet) can reduce the thickness of the skin and wearing socks and shoes as much as you can will help when your feet become painful. However, if your heels become sore, or if the callus becomes too thick for you to maintain resulting in skin cracks, then for the best results see your Podiatrist/Chiropodist. The Podiatrist you will see at City Centre Chiropody will remove the dead thickened skin from your feet and heels either on a regular basis or just as a one off treatment.Your heels will be filed with a special machine to leave the skin smooth and crack free ready for your sandals again. For the severely cracked heels we will advise you on the best creams for your skin type and show you how to care for your condition to speed up the healing process. The Podiatrist will also rule out any underlying reasons why your feet have become dry and cracked and advise you on appropriate footwear… perhaps suggesting a larger size or a closed-heel sandal.

Education Training New home for Little Owls Little Owls Pre-school in Mannamead has moved to new premises. The preschool, which has secured more than £20,000 worth of funding for building works and new resources has move around the corner to Seymour Road. After more than a decade in the church hall at Emmanuel Church, Little Owls opens this autumn term at Blake Lodge, the home of the Plymouth Deaf Association. Over the summer, staff and builders will be busy transforming the PDA’s annexe and garden into a colourful and uniquely-designed environment for toddlers. Tracey Cunningham, the pre-school manager says it’s been very exciting: “It really is going to be fantastic for the little ones. We’ve got a great big space for the pre-school; a brandnew kitchen where the children can do their baking and a lovely big enclosed garden with a brand- new outdoor classroom.” Little Owls pre-school has received £7,000 from Plymouth City Council’s

14

Early Years department to help pay for the building works; £10,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery and another £2,000 from the Cooperative Community Fund towards kitting out the outdoor classroom. “The support we have had from charities and companies has been tremendous,” says Skye Godfrey, chairman of the preschool committee. “As well as this ‘corporate’ support we have had so much good-will from individuals and local companies. We can’t wait to get started and show all our parents what a wonderful place it is for their children.” Litte Owls pre-school will re-open on September 8 in its new home at Blake Lodge. Education Training Making the right choice

Did you know that young people have to stay in education and training until they are 17? And that from next year this rises to 18? However, this does not mean that they have to stay at school – they have choices! Today 16-year-olds can choose to stay at school, go to college, take up an apprenticeship or do some volunteering or work, so long as they are also doing some formal training. Given all this choice it is essential that young people are properly informed about all their options. This is why at City College Plymouth there is a team of Careers Advisers who provide their potential students with impartial advice and guidance. They make sure that you know about all your choices and will help you to make the right choice for you. So when you get your exam results, why not pop down to the College? City College are running results advice sessions at their Kings Road campus from 10am to 1pm on Friday August 15, Friday August 22, Tuesday August 26, Wednesday August 27, Thursday August 28 and Friday August 29. To register, or for more information about your options, call 01752 305300, e-mail info@ cityplym.ac.uk or visit cityplym.ac.uk/events.

Education Training Green fingers helped student to blossom into RHS winner A green-fingered student at Stoke Damerel Community College has attended a special ceremony at the RHS Garden Wisley after winning his category in a national gardening competition.

Teacher Mrs Christine Jarvis pictured with student David Scott Cavey

David Scott Cavey, 14, was one of three Key Stage 3 finalists in the RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2014 competition and was crowned the winner on 19 June 2014. David and his fellow students in Christine Jarvis’ Year 9 Nurture Science group have worked hard to transform an area behind the College’s Science block into a vegetable garden complete with a pond as well as creating flower beds from recycled pallets at the front of the school. “I’m really proud of them because they’re the first thing that visitors to the school see,” said David. “I’m just really happy to have won and I had an amazing visit to Wisley. I didn’t think I’d ever be into gardening but there is something about being in this garden - it gives me peace and confidence as well as freedom to try things.” Alana Tapsell from the RHS Campaign for School Gardening explained why David was the winner in his category.

“We selected David because we were very moved by his story and how, despite struggling with mainstream education, he has excelled in the garden and has grown to become a mature leader within the group.”

Teacher Christine Jarvis said it had been an ‘absolute pleasure’ to see David’s development since the start of the garden project.

“It has been wonderful to see him develop from a very timid and reserved student,” said Mrs Jarvis. “I am absolutely delighted, not just for David, but for everyone involved in the garden project. This wonderful award comes as a result of three years’ hard work - what an achievement.”

How to be happy... As an English sports fan, it is hard to be happy this summer. Our football players, cricketers and even Andy Murray have failed to hit the highs we had hoped to see. But we don’t have to be down about it.

40% of our happiness comes from planned events, according to a recent survey. So if you want to be happier (and those around us as well), we need to take some action. The happy list Here are six suggestions: • Wake up and count your blessings It may sound a bit trite, but try thinking of something to look forward to every day when you wake up. I’m no psychologist, but I believe something similar is advised as part of treating depression. Recall something from the past that made you happy, and plan a repetition. • Savour your morning coffee Too many of us rush from one thing to the next. There’s a practice rapidly catching on called “Mindfulness”. Basically, this means “enjoying the moment”. Taking time to appreciate the good things around you; perhaps some birdsong, a child’s laugh, the blue (?) of the sky. It sounds odd, but taking a few deep breaths can reduce your stress levels significantly (and the levels of stress

hormones that can cause long term damage) • Sweat your way to joy This isn’t one of my favourites, but regular exercise can also reduce the impact of stress, and produce the endorphins that give us that happy feeling (just don’t overdo it). • Do a five-minute favour ‘It is better to give than receive’, so the saying goes, but a recent survey found this to be true. People were generally happier if they had helped out another person. More so than the person being helped. • Make work a game Most of us have to spend time at work, so what can we do to make it a happier experience. Again, surveys show that if you set yourself goals, measure your progress, and take time to reflect on your achievements, you’ll be much happier. • Friends get appointments too The same survey quoted in my introduction also discovered that up to 70% of happiness was due to time spent with friends and family. A quote that has stayed with me for years came from a book about fatherhood. ‘A quieter day is not coming’, wrote Rob Parsons. He meant that we cannot wait for more time to do the things that are important to us. We have to ‘seize the day’ and make it happen. We book appointments for all sorts of things; why not plan in times for friends and families? It might seem too ‘businesslike’

Coffee anyone?

Derriford Hospital workers Julie Hawke and Debbie Watson have presented a cheque for £1,100 to the Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre in Plymouth. The centre supports patients, their families and carers. The two Serco employees raised the money by dancing the Charleston as part of a sponsored Derriford Come Dancing event and were inspired to take part by colleagues who have had cancer or are still battling the disease.

“It was an amazing challenge for both of us, but particularly for Debbie, who suffers from Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which affects all her connective tissue and places great restrictions on how she can dance. “Her particular version of the condition is so rare that it seems to occur in just her family and she had to get a proper diagnosis at a hospital in London. “We put together our own choreography and learned the Charleston from scratch. “It was a personal journey that we truly enjoyed. Despite pulling muscles, aches, pains and broken shoes there was always a lot of laughter and the thought of our colleagues never far from our minds.” Julie and Serco supervisor Debbie put in more than two months’ regular practice after work and at weekends and performed in front of family for feedback.

As a thank you to all the staff who supported and sponsored them, they are going to perform again at the Serco Star Awards in October.

What’s this got to do with finance? Happy people tend to earn more than others, because they are easier to employ, easier to work with, and will take on challenges more readily. So if you want to earn more, and have more opportunities, get happy!

Sylvia’s new book lifts the lid on fascinating facts from the past Fascinating facts about Plympton down the centuries are published in a new book by a local author. Sylvia Guthrig has published ‘A Plympton Miscellany’ which introduces some little known facts about the parish and will be valued by anyone who loves history. The book contains little known facts from a 400 year period between the 15th and 19th centuries. The volume is the latest in a long line of historical books written and published by Sylvia. She said: “I have always been interested in history, particularly family history. It started when I was a child and my father used to tell me stories about the kings and queens of England. “I became interested in local history more than 20 years ago and have been editor of the Devon

Family Historian magazine since 1981,” she added. “It is a quarterly magazine with 4,000 subscribers from all over the UK and the rest of the world.” Her first book was called The Manors of Woodford and Boringdon and was published in 1999 followed five years later by Tales of Old Plympton. Both volumes are still in print and can be purchased at £10 for the pair. A Plympton Miscellany consists of 124 pages and contains a number of illustrations. Sylvia spent around three years researching the subject and preparing the content. There are sections on the English Civl War in Plympton, the Militia in Plympton in 1805, poaching in the 19th century, while an inventory of household goods of the Parker family at Boringdon in 1664 provides a fascinating insight into how the local gentry lived at the time.

Sylvia has also helped to prepare family history volumes and is happy to help anyone with their family history, especially those wanting to know how to begin the fascinating journey. Appointments can be made for any Tuesday between 10am and 4pm by phone or e-mail. (See details below). At the age of 81 she is not only active as a writer of books, but also writes play, makes patchwork bags, produces post cards and runs a monthly bookstall in Plympton and Plymstock. A Plympton Miscellany sells for £7.50 and copies can be purchased from Sylvia at her home in Trelawny Road. Contact Sylvia on 01752 337011 or e-mail giggins@homecall.co.uk

Buddy’s tale a lesson for all Staff at a Woodside Charity shop had a surprise package on the doorstep one Monday morning recently. What first appeared to be an empty cardboard box revealed a little scared kitten on closer examination. The box had been sealed shut, but luckily the kitten appeared to have not suffered too much from

the heat and was taken to the sanctuary. Carole Bowles, Woodside’s founder said: “On arrival the kitten was terrified, but in good health. Within a little time he was eating well and receiving many cuddles of reassurance from staff” “Followers of our sanctuary’s Facebook page followed his progress that day, helping to choose his name and we even had several offering him a new home” “Buddy is currently having a

homevisit carried out, while receiving all the care and attention he needs at our centre.” Although it appears to all be a happy ending for Buddy the sanctuary asks that his tale is used to encourage people to act appropriately and think of their duty of care for their pets.

they cannot home then please call us. Buddy was lucky, others may not be. We answer the phone every day between 11-5.”

“We are now well into the kitten season and are calling on people to not leave things to chance and ensure their pets are neutered. If anyone is struggling with kittens

Prime diner for lovers of vegetarian food Samphire Brasserie on Mayflower Street is proving increasingly popular with vegetarian and vegan foodies looking for a good meal out, and the restaurant is proving that vegetarian food is a tasty and satisfying alternative for dyed-in-the wool meat eaters looking for a dining experience with a difference. Joe Wadge and Becca Speare opened Samphire for business in March 2014 and haven’t looked back. Their extensive lunch time menu offers a choice of sub rolls ranging from Cajun Chicken through to tasty TLT (smoked Tempeh, Lettuce and Tomato). There’s home-made soups, salads, burgers, risotto, lasagne and pan-fried pizzas, fish and chips, and there’s a special children’s menu too. The a la carte menu adds in a selection of scrumptious starters, and an increasingly popular range of cheeses (made on the premises by Joe), and Becca’s home-made cakes and sweet treats. All dishes are 100% vegetarian, and nearly everything on the menu is vegan apart from their speciality burgers. Gluten free options are on offer too, Samphire was shortlisted for the Plymouth Magazine Young Business of the Year award earlier this year, pipped to the post by the eventual winners Elixel. A young, enterprising couple, Becca and Joe (both 25), are passionate about the merits of vegetarian cuisine. “Joe has been a vegetarian all his life”, said Becca, “and when we met 9 years ago I changed my diet too. As well as being tasty food, I noticed health benefits – the condition of my skin really improved.” Every dish is made to order, and new dishes are always being added, building

up the restaurant’s repertoire of authentic, British, vegetarian and vegan cuisine. To celebrate Samphire’s first anniversary in March, Joe put together a dish he’s named Kruelty Free Cooking. The celebratory dish consists of chicken drumsticks and popcorn chicken, in a delicious ‘southern fried’ spicy coating, with a side order of twice-fried chips, coleslaw and beans. One definitely non-veggie diner who sampled this particular delight was heard to say that it was the best popcorn chicken he had ever tasted. The taste and texture are a real surprise to those who have not tried vegetarian food. For first-time veggie diners, you may need to forget any preconceptions you may have. “You can still be strong and a veggie,” commented Joe between cooking and making cheese, underlining his conviction that vegetarian and vegan food is good for all. “Vegetarians and vegans go to the gym too! The food we serve is high in protein and low in fat, and people often comment that they’re surprised how full they are after a vegetarian meal.” The menu is affordably priced, and although Samphire does not currently have a licence, diners can bring their own wine – there’s no corkage charge. For those who fancy an alcohol free option, there’s a full range of Fentimans soft drinks, plus locally roasted coffee and a selection of teas. The restaurant, which has 40 covers, is

111 Mayflower Street Plymouth, PL1 1SD Tel: 01752 263116

open from 12 noon to 3pm and 5pm until 9pm from Tuesday to Saturday. Takeaway food is also available, including ice-creams. Since opening last year, Samphire has become a popular destination for local diners and also for people who have heard on the grapevine about the restaurant’s great food. “We have had people coming from London, and even as far away as Germany, especially to eat here,” said Becca. With such a wide range of delicious dishes on offer, it’s not hard to see why. Currently Samphire is offering a special two course meal on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, from the set menu, for just £10.

18th century fire engine which tackled 20th century blazes An ancient fire appliance built in 1765 was still being used to put out fires in Plympton more than 150 years later. That was the astonishing fact which emerged when Freddie Mills from the Plympton St Maurice Civic Society was interviewed by Andrew Hill for the Plympton Podcast recently. The fire engine, which is maintained by the Society, is a popular attraction at local events, including the recent Lamb Feast in Plympton. The fire engine was built by Nuttalls of Longacre London in 1765. An advertisement from that date states that Elizabeth, widow of Adam Nuttall of Longacre, London, was engine maker to all His Majesty‚ Public Offices, Dockyards, Forts and Garrisons etc., belonging to His Majesty‚ Royal Navy. Initially it was probably owned by an insurance company which used its own engine to protect houses that indicated, by a plaque, that they were insured by

that company. Such a plaque can be seen on Brick House Fore Street which was registered with Sun Insurance in 1791. Subsequently it appears that the Borough of Plympton St Maurice took over responsibility for the engine. In 1871 the fire brigade consisted of a conductor and twelve volunteers. The engine, horse drawn and hand pumped, was housed next to the Guildhall in Fore Street. The brigade was called the PDVFB – Plympton and District Volunteer Fire Brigade. The company was summoned by bugle, and the most important job was catching the horse which was kept in the field south of Fore Street. In the Plympton Magazine in February 1895 there is a description of a fire in the grocer’s shop of Mr Reuben Triscott. “The fire was brought under control in about two hours. The house was gutted and the three children rescued. Order was maintained by Pc Frood. The hydrants, the stand pipes, the pressure of water and the hose reel fittings could not have

More than 100 people gathered beside the River Plym at Plymbridge in July to witness an open air service of full immersion baptisms in the river. A total of 11 people ranging in age from 10 to 84 from a number of local churches were baptised on the day. The old fire engine which is maintained by the Plympton St Maurice Civic Society

been better. But for so good a water supply and so prompt and efficient a fire brigade, there is little doubt that the whole row of seven houses would have been burnt down.” The horse which pulled the fire engine also pulled the local milk float - which on one occasion led to a problem. A correspondent to the Morning News in 1922 described how the St Maurice fire brigade was called to a fire some miles away. “The fire engine was taken out of its shed but to our surprise was left in the street, while hose and firemen were packed

onto and into a taxicab and driven off to the fire.” On asking why the engine had not gone too, it was explained that the horse was still on its milk round. In due course the horse returned. Then in solemn state the engine was driven off to the fire. A popular display was a demonstration of the brigade on the Castle Green when a fire in a mock- up house would be extinguished. One such event was recorded by Pathé News in 1923 when the parish was paid two guineas for the privilege of filming it. In 1994 the engine appeared on the Blue Peter programme.

Spinnaker staff help secure a better future for Woodside Animal Sanctuary residents Unwanted pets that stay longer than usual at a Plymouth animal sanctuary can now look forward to a far more stimulating stay whilst they wait for a home. Spinnaker International staff chose the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust as their charity of the year raising £4,044 to help those pets waiting for adoption.

Woodside Founder Carole Bowles MBE, “When we take pets in, it’s for as long as they need us. Unfortunately, if they are elderly, sick or a type considered less desirable, their stay can be for many months. Avoiding boredom and stress is not only good for their health; it also enables these wallflowers to blossom, which in turn attracts the interest of potential new owners. This wonderful donation will enable us to enrich their

living accommodation and provide activity toys and other equipment.” Saltash based Spinnaker staff raised the amount with various activities including weekly raffles and bake sales. Anne Temple, personnel manager at Spinnaker said: “We are proud of our staff and how they embrace fund-raising with such enthusiasm. Everyone at Spinnaker has the opportunity to choose

They came from churches including Woodford Methodist Church and Stoke Christian Centre to reaffirm their faith through baptism. The event started with singing and prayers and then personal statements were read out by those being baptised, before the full immersion baptisms then took place. Helen Taylor, one of those baptised, told the Plympton Podcast: “It means so much and it’s an experience that you can’t put words to. I was baptised as a child, but being a baby I knew nothing about it. I thought I was old enough now to make my own promises. I wanted to reaffirm my faith.” Rev’d Paul Rees of Woodford Methodist Church who conducted the baptisms said: “A few months ago a number of young people said that they wanted to reaffirm their faith by full immersion baptism. We sat down and talked about the importance of faith in Jesus and what full immersion baptism represents.”

the charity for the company to support. Our Thursday afternoon raffles have now become part of Spinnaker culture. “ Purpose designed cat harnesses allow long stay cats to get out of their pens and interact with visitors and other residents. All of the seventeen species cared for at Woodside benefit from its enrichment programme, even the ponies. Around 100 people gathered to watch the baptisms in the River Plym

Stunning sculptures on the Plym Valley Heritage Trail Bugs on bikes, giant metallic dragonflies lurking in the bushes are just some of the stunning sculptures waiting to be spotted along the Saltram and Plym Valley Heritage Trail. The final stage of the first phase of the Saltram and Plym Valley Heritage Trail is now complete, with six sculptural benches now in place. The national cycling charity Sustrans worked with the project and their volunteers helped design and install benches.

Area manager Paul Hawkins said: “These sculptures add yet more interest to what is already a fascinating section of National Cycle Network. More and more people are enjoying this great route, which is not only part of the Sustran’s National Cycling Route 27 but also the Devon section of the Velodyssey – the Atlantic cycling route that covers 1400 kilometres down the French coast to Spain.” The new benches, along with a series of eye-catching waymarkers, are part of a project to restore and improve links between the city and the stunning valley. The project is being coordinated by Plymouth City Council in partnership with South Hams

Council, the National Trust, the Environment Agency, the Forestry Commission, Devon Wildlife Trust and Natural England.

Many of the features are on National Trust land at Saltram and in the Plym Valley to help connect the two National Trust properties for the benefit of Plymouth people. Artists Gary and Thomas Thrussell were commissioned to work alongside National Trust and Sustrans volunteers at Plym Bridge Woods and Saltram, Woodford School and youth groups in Efford to develop the designs and finish the benches on site.

There are now 16 pieces of sculpture connecting Saltram House with Efford, Plym Bridge Woods and Plympton. They feature designs to reflect the location and history – such as railway engines, industrial or farming symbols and buildings – along the route and references to nature and famous local families.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet member for the Environment, said: “There is now so much to see and admire along this trail – come on down and take a look! This trail is all about getting Plymouth folk out and about and enjoying the area’s rich history and environment.” Four sculptures are located along the trail and are made of galvanized steel and measure up

Time to celebrate at Nibana One of Plymouth’s most popular Indian restaurants is celebrating a successful six years in business. Launched by brothers Shah and Hisbul Hussein in 2008, the Nibana Restaurant at Crownhill Shops in Morshead Road has established a reputation for the finest authentic Indian dishes. Nibana has several meanings including ‘heaven on earth’, ‘enlightenment’ and ‘fulfilment’ and each description could match what is on offer at the restaurant. “We set out to create a contemporary, stylish family-run restaurant offering a completely modern style of Indian cooking,” said Shah. “We have combined this with a warm and relaxing atmosphere and we have been delighted with the success of the restaurant. “We have an excellent team at the Nibana both in the kitchen and front of house. They work really well together,” he added. The brothers, who hail originally from London, have been in Plymouth for 13 years and gained valuable experience running Indian takeaways in the city before taking the plunge and opening their own restaurant. “We live in the Crownhill

area and were aware that there are very few restaurants in the village for people to eat,” said Hisbul. They have worked hard over the years and put a lot of time, effort and energy into the business ensuring it remains up to date with the latest trends in Indian cuisine and style. With plenty of free parking just a few steps away and the restaurant located in a prominent position in the bustling shopping area in the heart of Crownhill, the brothers were confident their venture would prove attractive to customers. “We have a loyal and growing customer base who not only come from the immediate area around Crownhill, but also from right across the whole of Plymouth and as far away as Cornwall,” said Shah. “Our aim is to present traditional, authentic and contemporary Indian food at affordable prices in a very pleasant and stylish environment,” he added. “The menu is buzzing with exciting flavours to suit everybody’s taste buds, ranging from hot to creamy mild curries, including both modem and traditional classic dishes. We are happy to serve dishes to suit the customer’s precise preferences.” Shah, who runs the kitchen side of the business, works closely with the chefs to create and introduce new dishes to the menu. He travels far and wide to discover new dishes to add to the menu. The restaurant also offers authentic dishes among their chef’s specialities which are not normally available at other restaurants elsewhere in the city. These include Chashni Chicken or Lamb, a dish noted for its flavours, using Kashmiri Massalla, coriander and chillies, onions, peppers, topped with a splash of crispy potatoes. Other favourites are Murug Katta Massala - barbecued chicken breast fillets, stuffed with minced lamb with fresh ginger, garlic, green peppers and exotic spices – and Naga Biryani, chicken tikka with chillies and

prawns“All these dishes are extremely popular with our customers,” said Shah. Presentation is one of the keys to the success of Nibana, reflected in the stylish decor of the 65-seat restaurant and on the plate with the colourful and eye-catching way dishes are prepared. Nibana’s quality of food and service has also been recognised with a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and a Qualityfoods Certificate in recognition of its presentation and service. Recognising the fact that customers perhaps have a little less to spend these days, Nibana has offered a Thali Night special on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings - six sumptuous courses served in bowls on a round plate showcasing the best Nibana has to offer, along with traditional starters for just £9.95 per head. Nibana also offers a three course lunchtime special at £9.95, this time with three different set meals to choose from. A takeaway service is also available (collection only) and the brothers will be putting together a special offer for diners to celebrate their anniversary in August. Nibana is open lunchtimes from 12.30 to 2.30 (closed Sunday lunchtime) and evenings from 5.30 to 11.30 seven days a week. It is always advisable to book to avoid disappointment, especially at the weekend. How to spot the loan sharks and what to do to stop them By Alanna Cohen of Advice Plymouth At Advice Plymouth, we see many clients struggling with day to day expenses, some of whom resort to the dreaded payday lenders when they have nowhere else to go. The costs if you are unable to make repayments are outrageous and advice organisations have pressured the government to tighten legislation to deal with these lenders. Much progress has been made and the Financial Conduct Authority now have very significant powers to deal with licensed lenders. We are pleased with the changes: it is vital to be able to hold lenders to account and take action when they are in the wrong. But a worrying potential pitfall is that if a gap opens up it may be filled by lenders acting under the radar. So now more than ever it is vital to ensure that loan sharks are treated as the criminals they are. Loan sharks are notoriously difficult to spot: often heavily disguised as upstanding members of the community, friends of friends, mums at the school gate or the elderly woman at the end of the road. So how do you know if a lender is a loan shark? And what do you do if you find one? A loan shark is someone who lends without the appropriate licence. Loan sharks rarely give any paperwork and if payments are missed they often use intimidation and violence to get money from their ‘clients’. This is because they have no legal means of enforcing the debt. If you have information about a possible loan shark, the Illegal Money Lending Team is there to help. A client of ours recently told us about a private lender that a member of his family was borrowing from. The lender runs a local business, but not a financial one, so it is unlikely this man has a licence to lend. Unfortunately our client was worried what may happen to his family member and would not give any more information. The most important thing to know is that these loans are illegal, so if the team investigate, the loan is gone. You can report completely anonymously. The name of the lender and the community they operate in is enough for the team to begin investigating and encourage others to come forward with their evidence. You can report directly to the team on 0300 555222 or you can report through many advice organisations including Advice Plymouth.

Tribute to Richard Bunt – a life well lived Back in the early 1980s Kerry and I attended what is now known as the Plymouth Christian Centre. We were there for around ten years from 1982 when the Fellowship was at Notte Street and had just bought the building at Cattedown.

local golf course encouraging each other that we could at least get the ball around the course.

It was a wonderful time of what would be considered today as spiritual renewal and revival under the leadership of Pastor Maldwyn Jones and the Eldership.

We discussed the pros and cons of competition, since we were talking about how the church in the city needed to be encouraged to look out for the welfare of Plymouth and work together more effectively for the sake of the city.

Like every Christian fellowship on the planet it was a community and season of wonderful messiness because people are involved, but it was an amazing time with literally hundreds of people coming to faith in Jesus Christ under the ministry of Pastor Jones. Some of those Elders are still there and I want to pay tribute to a young man, Richard Bunt, who with his wife Kay came to the fellowship in 1984 and eventually became a well loved and respected Elder of PCC. In mid-July Kerry and I attended the thanksgiving service after the funeral of Richard who sadly died prematurely as far as many of us were concerned. It was a service of laughter and tears and the church was packed to the gunnels with people who knew him and were impacted by his life. The highlights were the tributes paid to Richard by his teaching colleagues at the school he served at for many years; tributes from his family and his wonderful daughters as well as Kay’s tribute which prompted a well-deserved standing ovation of love and honour, for her heart-felt words for her much loved husband. Richard and Kay spent some time with Kerry and I last year and Richard and I had laughed our way round a

Richard was a much better player than me, but as usual very gracious and gentle in his competitiveness and encouragement. (He was a very good teacher - many stories at the thanksgiving service centred on the young people who had been encouraged by him at school.)

We understood that it is just the messiness of life again, because when people are involved in organising things, it is both wonderful and complicated with everybody possessing different opinions. The stuff of life, as they say. It is church leadership, like Richard and Kay, who quietly persevere in serving others who need pastoral care at difficult moments in life and who wonderfully represent the character and nature of God’s love to many through the years. Leaders like the Bunts manage to constantly give to others, both in and outside the faith community, because they are grounded and rooted in their own personal faith in Jesus Christ. However, they are also human and need our love, prayers and support in return. The greatest gift to Kay and the family at this time is to invest a few moments of prayer for them as a family. When a loved one ‘passes on’ it is those who are left behind who carry the loss acutely. Please pray that The Lord will provide the peace that passes all understanding.

By Greg Yates of Howard & Over Solicitors

Important issues for joint tenancy How do you own a property? Once upon a time it was all very simple. A couple would meet, marry and buy their house. The house would be owned by them both and when one of them died, whether or not there was a will, the house would go to the survivor. The married couple in my example would own a house as joint tenants. The phrase ‘joint tenants’ is a very ancient one and does not have anything to do with the tenancy that you have with a landlord. If a property is owned under a joint tenancy then despite what is said in any will, when one of the owners dies the share of the deceased owner goes to the survivor. This may not be appropriate in modern times. For example, both parties may be on a second marriage. They may be cohabiting and this would not be the most appropriate way to deal with the property. People often buy houses when they are older and one party may contribute substantially more to the property than the other. To deal with these issues it is probably more appropriate to own a property jointly as ‘tenants in common’. I’ll illustrate it by the example of an orange. A joint tenancy is like having an unpeeled orange; you can only pass the whole orange on. A tenancy in common is a peeled orange enabling you to distribute the segments. When you visit one of our conveyancing solicitors we will ask how you want to own the property. A frank discussion now can save considerable heartache later if that relationship breaks down. For example if someone contributes 70% of the purchase monies you could own the property 70:30. A clear declaration of trust would be made so that all owners knew exactly what the position will be at any sale. Unlike a joint tenancy you can leave your share of a property to the beneficiaries under your will. A will is also necessary to give clarification about what is going to happen if one of the owners dies. If you have children from an earlier relationship you might want to leave your share of the property to the children, but allow the surviving owner to remain in the property for the rest of his or her life.

Legally Speaking

As we have said previously, there is no such creature as a ‘common law wife’. Cohabitation disputes are complex and are to be avoided. Clarity and openness at the start of a relationship is the way to avoid problems later whether you are cohabiting or in a marriage. We are happy to discuss any aspect of this issue with you. Remembering the Football Battalion By the time this article appears, there will be much in the news about the centenary of the First World War. I wrote previously about Plymouth’s involvement in the Great War and, with the World Cup recently in the news, I thought that it would be interesting to write about the Football Battalion. There were many battalions formed in the earlier part of the war which involved work colleagues, school friends and sportsmen etc. These were known as the Pals Battalions. In December 1914, the MP for Brentford, William Johnson-Hicks, had the idea to form the Footballers’ Battalion, the 17th Service Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. By then, there were already many local Pals regiments around the country and battalions featuring sportsmen seemed a good idea.

Evelyn Lintott, a footballer and officer, was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme

The Saracens and Wasps announced that 98% of their players had joined the Rugby Battalion, but the Footballers’ Battalion had a very limited take up. From 11 Lancashire football clubs, only 40 players enlisted. By the end of November, 11 players from Argyle had joined the army and recruitment gathered pace. Of the 5,000 professional football players in Britain, 2,000 joined up and approximately 600 were killed in battle. In January, 1915, a story published in The Times read: ‘More than 200 recruits have been enrolled in London for the Football Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, in addition to 400 from other districts. Among the recruits are several Rugby international players of England, Ireland and Scotland, and the officers include more than one Double Blue. The commanding officer is Colonel C F Grantham, late of the Indian Army, and commissions have been given among others to Vivian J Woodward and Evelyn H Lintott, two well known players.’

With the centenary of the Great War in August writer Derek Tait looks at the footballers who lost their lives in service. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk

Jack Cock was awarded the military medal for bravery in the field. He had been recorded as ‘missing, presumed dead’, but survived the war and went on to play for England

Stanley Reed played for Argyle during the 1913-1914 season and died during army training at Wareham in Dorset on 21st April 1916

William Baker was killed in action on 22nd October, 1916, at Serre, during the Battle of the Somme

Argyle as well as Queen’s Park Rangers before the outbreak of war. On 8th August 1916, James ‘Jimmy’ McCormick, who played for Argyle 268 times up until 1915, was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Somme. As a Sergeant in 17th Middlesex, he was badly injured before being captured at Waterlot Farm, Guillemont. He was repatriated in November 1918 and continued to play for Argyle on his return. On 22nd October 1916, Sergeant William James Baker was killed at Serre during the Battle of the Somme. Baker was a former professional footballer and played for Plymouth Argyle many times. He was 33 years old when he died and was awarded the Military Medal. He is James ‘Jimmy’ McCormick commemorated at the played for Argyle 268 Sucrerie military cemetery times up until 1915 at Colincamps.Norman Wood played for Argyle twice before joining the Footballers’ Battalion. He served as a Sergeant and was killed on 28th July, 1916 at Delville Wood during the Battle of the Somme. Jack Cock, another Argyle player, was awarded the military medal for bravery in the field. He was, at one time, recorded as ‘missing, presumed dead’, but survived the war and went on to play for England.

At home, Plymouth Argyle had been making plans to join the Football League when war intervened. Professional football continued to be played up and down the country although there were some objections to the sport being continued while men were fighting and being killed overseas.

On 2nd September 1914, Moses Russell made his first appearance for Plymouth Argyle in a match against Brighton and Hove Albion. The result for Plymouth was a 2-0 win.

Lord Kitchener’s campaign, which included posters stating ‘Your country needs you’, appealed for fit young men to join the army. Criticism of football was voiced locally because of the three towns’ strong military tradition. Local newspapers stopped reporting on match results so they could include page after page of those wounded or killed in battle.

Incidentally, for anyone looking out for my new book ‘Plymouth in the Great War’, it will be published by Pen and Sword and released in October. I was hoping for an Evelyn Lintott, both footballer and officer, August publishing date but, was killed on the first day of the Battle of unfortunately, it’s out of my the Somme. He had played for Plymouth hands.

A notice in the Devon and Exeter Gazette of Saturday 5 September 1914 carried the headline, Rifle or football.

Although international football was suspended with the outbreak of war, the Southern League continued. Russell made 25 appearances with Argyle before play was completely suspended in 1915. He later served as a private in the mechanised transport section of the Army Service Corps and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

City’s commercial property market showing healthier signs

There were many other heroic footballers who fought in the war. Luckily, the majority of those who enlisted survived the war but many were never to play football again.

economy brings jobs and prosperity for all and that is always underpinned by a strong property market. Ashleigh Phillips stated “We are building the team in Plymouth and also bringing in specialist expertise from our offices in Bristol and Gloucester. Many of those specialists are saying to us that Plymouth has more potential than they imagined. We are proud of our city and are keen to promote, built and add value wherever we can.

A city entertainment group is searching for a male compere.

The sheer scale of the city; its strengths in manufacturing, the unique coastal position and the strength of its entrepreneurial small businesses should all combine to bring major success to the city. A “can do” attitude in the private sector will be helped by an engaged local authority and outside investment

“The decline in manufacturing that has been seen throughout Britain has not happened on the same scale here and the healthcare and marine sectors have remained strong. Add to that the number of expanding small and medium-sized businesses that have started up in the last few years and that are expanding and thriving and you have a very strong picture of a city on the brink of success”. A strong private sector can only help complement the established public sector and University generated employment.

Glenn Kelly pointed to the natural advantages Plymouth has with one of the largest harbours in Europe, its historic links to the USA and its unique position on the South Coast as pivotal. But he said that new initiatives, such as the Local Enterprise Partnership’s and forwardthinking and ambitious plans for regeneration were also fuelling optimism, and entrepreneurial spirt within the city.

Seven editions reaching 62,000 homes Plymouth students show their skills to win top awards

Graphic design student scoops Sky Award for innovative work A graphic designer from Plymouth has won a prestigious design award from Sky for his innovative use of heat-sensitive technology.

Ash Henderson, a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student of Plymouth College of Art, was spotted by Sky at London graduate show New Designers last week – picking up £1,000 in prize money and a three month internship alongside the ‘New Designers Sky Award’. 21-year-old Ash, who is originally from Grimsby, said: “I was shocked. They said my name but I didn’t hear it properly at first but all of my course mates just started jumping on me. It was overwhelming. I didn’t expect it at all.” Ash picked up the prestigious prize for his final

year project ‘Now You See Us Now You Don’t’ – an interactive developmental experience for children aged four to 10 aimed at highlighting the plight of endangered species. The piece uses heat-sensitive, ‘thermochromic’ materials that, when warmed with human body heat – or a hair-dryer as he used at New Designers – reveals a colourful hidden message beneath. The message then slowly disappears as the materials cools, which Ash uses as a visual demonstration to the user about the risks of not caring for the some of the world’s most endangered species.

Kamal Gohil, programme leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Plymouth College of Art, said: “We’re incredibly proud of Ash for gaining recognition from a company like Sky on a national platform. It’s a big achievement.

“Ash loves to experiment with ideas and play with design. A few times those experiments failed but for him that was a good thing. He was able to understand what went wrong and rectify it. It didn’t stop him. He continued finding new ways to tackle the issue. “His project was very innovative. Through risk-taking and finding new ways of problemsolving he’s come up with something fresh. He’s applied materials in an exciting form of visual communication.” Ash, who says he immediately fell in love with Plymouth and its coastline when he attended an interview at the college three years ago, plans to pitch the idea to zoos around the country. He hopes that the fun and interactive element of his design work will capture the interests of children and help them engage with teaching.

Gethin’s £1,000 prize for infographics Graphic designer Gethin Oliver has scored big and bagged himself £1,000 in the process for a live brief competition set by Opta Sports – the biggest contributor of sports data in the world.

Gethin, a graphic design student from Plymouth College of Art, won the competition – which looked for creative and imaginative player comparison infographics – after entering

as part of a module on the course.

“I was in the shower at the time of finding out I had won. First of all I thought someone was having me on! I didn’t expect to hear back, let alone win,” Gethin said. The judges, a panel of expert graphic designers, selected Gethin’s design for being creative, clear, and clean-cut. “I just wanted to do something where I could present as much information in as clear a way as possible,” he said. “I had never done

an infographic before so I thought it would be something that boosted my portfolio and to just try something new.” Ash Henderson with his award Kamal Gohil, programme leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design, said: “We’d like to congratulate Gethin on this excellent achievement in a competitive live brief. Competitions like these give students excellent Four apprentices from City College Plymouth came experience in working to a specific brief away with a virtual clean sweep of prizes at the Institute and considering clients needs – and that’s of Sheet Metal Engineering (ISME) competition. exactly why we incorporate it into the taught programme here at the college.” ISME is a learned body with individual membership open to those employed in the sheet metal and associated industries. It was formed over 60 years ago to promote the science of working and using sheet metal and to provide opportunities for people to exchange ideas and information.

Clean sweep for City College apprentices

Every year ISME invites apprentices from all over southern England and Wales to take part in the competition, which provides a great opportunity for young people to measure their skills against others in the sheet metal industry. The four apprentices from City College Plymouth, all of whom are employed by Babcock, won five out of a possible eight categories. Ryan Acres won the ‘Open Class’ category and was also crowned ‘Overall Winner’ Michael Cornew won the ‘Vent Test Piece’ category, Iain Docherty won the ‘Open Class Report’ category and Fay Jackson won the ‘Originality’ Award for her sea horse piece.

Winning apprentices from left Iain Docherty, Ryan Acres,

Julie McLean, director of Michael Cornew and Fay Jackson work-based Learning and Schools Partnerships at the College, said: “It’s really pleasing to see that the dedication of students and staff who have worked extremely hard, and have been fully committed to aspiring to be the best in their field, has been recognised in such a prestigious competition.” Steve Boyd, Apprentice Development Manager at Babcock, said: “Nine Babcock apprentices took part in the ISME competition and they were all excellent ambassadors for both Babcock and City College Plymouth. The quality of work they produced was admired by all in attendance, with a fantastic final result of five wins on the day!”
