Warrant Officer 1 (WO1) Dave Deakin, who is currently serving at HMS Raleigh, has been recognised for his involvement in a project to build a new replenishmentat-sea (RAS) training rig at the Cornish base. The modern facility was formally opened last September and is designed to teach sailors how to transfer stores and fuel from ship-toship at sea. It includes representative platforms of ships replenishment stations where sailors can get hands-on experience of the task and a dedicated building for classroom instruction and administration, which bears the name of ‘Deakin Building’. With 28 years’ experience of this operation, WO1 Deakin’s commitment was invaluable to the

project. He said: “To be recognised with such a prestigious award is an honour. Being actively involved with this enormous and influential project, involving numerous organisations and some very enthusiastic people, was an absolute pleasure.”

Waging war on those pesky potholes

Plymouth City Council is winning its fight against potholes thanks to major investment in the city’s road network, along with a proactive repair programme and innovative machinery. Between January and June 2014, Amey – the council’s highways contractor – received 4,299 reports or complaints about potholes, compared to just 867 for the same period this year – a drop of 80 per cent. Amey is working around the clock and has already completed one major resurfacing programme this year, which has permanently repaired 31 roads.

repair programme that will treat two thirds of the city’s strategic network over the next three years. This is in addition to a programme of protective micro-asphalting on 23 roads showing the early signs of wear and tear. Micro-asphalt is a preventative treatment that not only extends the life of the road but also provides better skid resistance, improving road safety.

The pioneering ‘Roadmaster’ machine has also returned permanently to the city’s roads, following a hugely successful pilot last year. More than 11,000 defects were repaired by the Roadmaster in 2014 and since its return in March it has already tackled a further 3,000.

A second programme, which is targeting the city’s strategic routes (A, B and C roads), got under way in April and will resurface a further 20 roads and three roundabouts over the summer.

Since January, 140,248 square metres of tarmac has been laid across the city as part of the council’s resurfacing and micro-asphalting programmes and in the last 12 months 35,774 individual potholes have been repaired on Plymouth’s roads.

These works are part of an £11.2 million

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet

Member for Streetscene, said: “A resilient road network is a priority for residents and for this council. We’ve been pulling out all the stops to make extra money available and repair as many problem areas as possible.

“In 2014/15 we spent more than £4.5 million on road repairs and resurfacing and this year we will be spending more than £8 million. This increased investment, combined with a more proactive approach to repairs and the use of more sophisticated technology, is making a big difference to the condition of Plymouth’s roads.” Resurfacing will take place in the following locations in July: Albert Road July 1 and 2 6.30pm to 6am; North Cross Roundabout July 5 to 8 7.30pm to 6am; Charles Street July 9 7pm to 6am; Charles Cross Roundabout July 12 to 14 7.30pm to 6am; Ferry Road July 15 and 16 7.30pm to 6am; Pottery Road July 19 and 20 7.30pm to 6am; Paradise Road July 21 to 23 6.30pm to 6am; Exeter

Street (inbound) July 26 to 29 7pm to 6am; Exeter Street (outbound) July 30 7pm to 6am

All of the resurfacing works are being carried out at night to minimise disruption to traffic. They all require road closures and residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance. Access to properties will be maintained as far as possible and any diversion routes will be signposted. The works are being carried out alongside the council’s day-to-day road maintenance programme, which sees 10 gangs carrying out permanent first-time repairs to individual potholes across the city, including one gang operating at night on busier roads that cannot be closed to traffic during the day. The full list of roads being resurfaced over the summer is available at www. plymouth.gov.uk/roadrepairs. For the latest updates on road closures and improvement works, you can also follow @plymouthroads on Twitter.

available and a chance to buy a copy of the book signed by the author.

Plymouth’s City Centre Company and independent retailers are gearing up to join the nation in supporting national Independents’ Day.

Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’re really lucky that a talented author like Susmita has agreed to give up her time to talk about her journey to becoming a published writer.

July 4 marks America’s Independence Day and People 1st, a charity for the hospitality sector, has taken the opportunity to create a campaign to help support local businesses.

Susmita’s novel The Normal State of Mind was published in March this year. Described as ‘a deliciously bold debut novel’ and ‘a beautiful, evocative read’ it’s the story of two women, one gay and one straight, struggling to find their identity in 1990s India. The evening starts at 7pm and as well as Susmita’s talk there will be refreshments

“Hopefully listening to her story may encourage more budding wordsmiths to give it a go.” People are advised to book in advance by calling into their local library or visiting www. plymouthlibraryevents.eventbrite. co.uk. For more information call 01752 305900 or email library@ plymouth.gov.uk.

“What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Matthew 16:26

Thousands of independent retail and hospitality businesses across the UK will be holding special events and promotions as part of the day, including themed windows, high street festivities, discounts and offers to encourage people to buy from independent shops and boost their profitability. Shoppers in Plymouth are asked to take this day as an opportunity to shop differently by visiting smaller, independent and family owned businesses instead of larger chains and supermarkets. With around 270 businesses located in the independent quarter of the city, and an additional 100 in the Plymouth City Market, Plymouth has one of the largest independent quarters in the country.

Playwrights in search for a captain’s coat A Captain’s Folly is a new play set in Devonport in 1815, and being performed by the Playwriters Production Company at both Wembury War Memorial Hall and the Plymouth Central Library during July, to coincide with Napoleon’s brief time in Plymouth Sound aboard the Belepheron.

The Playwriters’ own folly is that they cannot find a Captain’s coat for their actor to wear, since all the theatrical sources have lent their stocks out to reenactment groups! If anyone can lend the group a Captain’s jacket for the first three weeks of July, please call Mike Ford or Vince Sutton on 07443498137 Tickets for the Wembury performance on Saturday July 11 (2.45pm) are obtainable from The Odd Wheel pub, Wembury or from the Box Office on 07443498137, priced at £5. “There is a bonus for all who go to see this play,” said Mike Ford, from the Playwriters Organisation, the parent organisation for the Production Company. “The tickets for this play may be used to get free entry to our other Play, ‘Tasminia flippin’hell,’ on Sunday July 12 at the same venue again starting at 2.45pm. Mike pointed out that the 2-for-1 offer applies to tickets bought for either play, but does not mean that two people admitted for the price of one, just that both plays may be seen with one ticket purchased.

PRIDE & JOY

The Digital Futures open day, held at Devonport Guildhall in June, gave visitors a chance to see latest plans for the development of the Market Hall asa digital centre for arts, community activity, enterprise and visitors. Partners involved in the project brought the latest digital technologies to the event for members of the public to experience for themselves. These included an inflatable 360 degree projection dome, Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets, electronic bird making and several other digital installations and hands on workshops. Students from City College Plymouth demonstrated two computer games created especially for the event, Bread Run and Sweet Space. The students have been taking part in a Creative Skills Initiative organised through RIO to give them practical work experience alongside their studies. The refurbishment of Devonport Market Hall is being led by social enterprise RIO (the Real Ideas Organisation) in partnership with Plymouth City Council, the Institute of Digital Arts and Technology (i-DAT at Plymouth University), City College Plymouth, Devonport High School for Boys and seven of the brightest tech companies in the region. Lindsey Hall, chief excutive of RIO said: “Devonport Market Hall will be a fantastic, unique, world class digital arts, enterprise and technology facility when it opens in late 2016.

offer space for events and meetings, a range of education programmes and a digital arts visitor centre.

“There are some brilliant digital companies in Plymouth and it’s a real shame that much of their work is invisible to most people in the city, especially young people, who don’t realise the job opportunities that exist right here.

Leader of Plymouth City Council Tudor Evans said: “The regeneration of Devonport is an ongoing challenge but change is happening on a daily basis and it’s great to see the progress that has been made in recent years.

“The Market Hall has stood empty for decades. It is fitting that together we have found an appropriate, sustainable, ambitious new use to bring it back to life - a 21st century type of market that is all about communication, exchanging ideas and a focal point for the community in Devonport.”

“The regeneration will boost the local economy, create jobs and create futures, and the Market Hall will be a key part of that. Digital technology is one of the critical sectors identified by Plymouth City Council, and is vitally important because it means the city is connected and can put us right at the heart of the global economy.

The event was sponsored by housing developer Redrow, which funded the £500,000 restoration of the Market Hall and clock tower. The building, built in 1852 but left derelict for many years, will become a digital centre for arts, community activity and enterprise. In addition to providing office, lab and teaching space for the partners, the Market Hall will also

“I am proud to be working in partnership with RIO on the development of the Market Hall, which once completed will give more people the inspiration and the opportunity to achieve great things.” For the information on the Devonport Market Hall plans, visit www.devonportmarkethall.org

Trainee plasterers building on skills in partnership project CASHBACK SUMMER Young plastering apprentices in Plymouth are being trained in additional skills to better equip them for modern day building projects.

“These new skills are the future of rendering across the world. The traditional methods with sand and cement are still important but its key for our learners – and their employers – that they also become skilled in these new techniques.”

Plymouth-based training provider Skills Group has joined forces with C&P Plastering Contractors Ltd in a new partnership to train apprentices in Exterior Wall Installation (EWI).

C&P Plastering has recently taken on three new apprentices from Skills Group, two in plastering and one in business administration.

Paul Pomeroy, director of C&P Plastering, said: “At the moment not enough youngsters are being trained in these different methods, it is not something that is currently included in plastering NVQs.

Apprentices getting to grips with new plastering techniques

“We feel that this technique should be part of that qualification and so we’re making a real push to train our youngsters so they have additional knowledge and skills. Our company is in it for the long-haul as we want to see more youngsters coming out better prepared.” Paul, who started out himself as an apprentice 33 years ago, is training four Skills Group plastering tutors in the new method so they will be able to take over

training the apprentices themselves. Al Craig, plastering tutor at Skills Group, said: “Although this system of rendering the outside of a building has been around in Germany for a few years, it is a relatively new method in this country. It is quicker and more efficient, and ties in with the government’s plan for this form of insulation to be bolted on to older buildings that don’t have adequate insulation.

To help develop the skills of current apprentices, Skills Group organised an external wall insulation masterclass with rendering supplier MAPEI. The event was held at Skills Group’s new construction centre on the Langage Business Park.

The aim is to equip apprentices with the latest techniques in rendering skills being used to insulate homes up and down the country, as an additional skill to their plastering qualifications. C&P Plastering has donated all the plastering equipment to Skills Group to enable them to offer training in this specialist technique. Two new training units are also being created at Skills Group Construction Campus at Langage Science Park to train plasterers in the new insulation process.

Wounded veterans in 18,500 mile hero charity cycle ride A team of charity cyclists, some of the recovering troops, have completed a 280-mile cycle ride from Plymouth Naval Base in Devonport to London in aid of the charity Help for Heroes.

Riders who took part in the Help for Heroes charity ride

Jim Davidson joins forces with HMS Sutherland team to launch charity cycle ride

About 30 cyclists, two on hand bikes, left the Naval Service Recovery Centre Endeavour in Devonport with their support team. They are part of a record number of 100 wounded Heroes, collectively covering 18,500 miles, representing the largest major gathering of Afghanistan and Iraq veteran cyclists since the end of the Afghanistan conflict. Many of the wounded are cycling from the South West and they were backed by over 1,000 charity supporters cycling from all four points of the compass to raise vital funds for Help for Heroes. Despite the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan coming to an end, a new Freedom of Information (FOI) act request to the Ministry of Defence from Help for Heroes has revealed that 32,036 Servicemen and women have been medically discharged between January 1995 and March 2014 a similar number to the population of Exmouth. With the continued support of the public, Help for Heroes aims to be there for all of those who continue to suffer in service of our country. The Hero Ride West 280 is covering a mammoth 280 miles in 5 days before joining up with the other cyclists at Windsor Racecourse for Heroes Sunday. The riders set off from the Help for Heroes’ Plymouth Recovery Centre, which helps serving (as part of an on-going relationship with the MOD) and veteran wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women from all services across the South West. Help for Heroes Band of Brother member, Greig Phillips, 34, was on a routine patrol with RAF Regiment in Afghanistan in 2009 when he stepped on an IED. He lost his right leg below the knee in the blast and was quickly flown back to Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

Torpoint’s Greig Phillips

in the Help for Heroes Sports Recovery Team. “After the incident I didn’t really know what to do with myself. Once the Help for Heroes Plymouth Recovery Centre opened it gave me more drive to want to do things. It has given me something to focus on again. “I signed up to Hero Ride to challenge myself to see how far I’ve come in the recovery process. I’ve never done a ride that big before and it’s great to be raising awareness of Help for Heroes who I’ve got a lot from in the last few years. There are 100 wounded, injured or sick servicemen and women riding this year and it would be great if the public could get behind everyone taking part joining in the #Backthe100 campaign”.

When he moved home to Torpoint, he was one of the first Hero Ride 2015, sponsored by Ginsters of Cornwall, to benefit from the newly built Help for Heroes Recovery is raising funds to provide the critical ongoing support Centre in Plymouth and has recently started a job working needed by our injured servicemen and women.

City unveils commemorative slab in honour of First World War hero The first of four commemorative paving slabs dedicated to Plymouthborn soldiers who received the Victoria Cross for their bravery during World War I has been unveiled on the Hoe.

The soldiers were supporting an attack on enemy machine gun positions andbecame known as ‘the six VCs before breakfast’.

residents and visitors to gain a greater understanding of how Plymouth and Devonport fit into the story of the First World War.”

The attack turned into a brutal battle as hundreds of the Allied soldiers either became trapped in barbed wire or were shot at by the defending Turkish force.

The unveiling was carried out by the Lord Mayor, supported by Colonel Mike Glover of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

A few survivors were able to overcome the wires and machine guns to secure the beach for further landings.

The slabs are part of a national initiative from the Department for Communities and Local Government to honour Victoria Cross recipients from the First World War. Between now and late 2018 commemorative paving stones will be laid in the birth places of all those awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict.

The slab is located near the Plymouth War Memorial, at the junction of Citadel Road and Lockyer Street, and is in memory of Alfred Joseph Richards VC (21 June 1879 – 21 May 1953) – a Plymouth-born soldier who served in the Lancashire Fusiliers. Sergeant Richards was one of six members of the Fusiliers awarded the Victoria Cross. He and his colleagues received their medals for the extreme courage they displayed during a hard-won beach landing that took place in the early hours of the morning on 25 April 1915 west of Cape Helles, Turkey. The landing was part of the Allied Forces’ Gallipoli Campaign. 10

As a result of a wound sustained in the action, Sergeant Richards had to have his right leg amputated above the knee and was discharged from the army. He married one of the nurses who had been treating him and settled in London where he servedin the Home Guard as a Provost Sergeant during World War II. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded to members of our armed forces for valour ‘in the face of the enemy’, and Alfred and his colleagues showed great bravery in their actions. “This slab and the three that will follow will provide a lasting legacy for these local heroes and enable

Plymouth will unveil three more slabs in memory of John James Crowe (April 2018), Brigadier General George Grogan (May 2018) and Sir Arnold Horace Santo Waters (November 2018). Communities Minister Baroness Williams of Trafford said: “One hundred years ago Sergeant Alfred Richards was rightly awarded Britain’s highest military honour for acts of exceptional courage at Gallipoli. This fitting tribute to his bravery is a permanent reminder to us all of his astonishing act of valour in service of our country.” For more information about Sergeant Richards and the Victoria Cross visitwww.plymouth.gov.uk/ museumsvcrossww1

A team of eight sailors, including the ship’s captain Commander Stephen Anderson, began a 1,600 ìmile ride from the ship in HM Naval Base, Devonport, to Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland in aid of Care after Combat. Mr Davidson chairs the charity which supports veterans of the Arms, Royal Navy and RAF who have fallen on hard times. He started the tough ride alongside the warship and said: “The charity is only new. We started six months ago. So we are extremely flattered the crew of HMS Sutherland are doing this really gruelling ride. It’s amazing and a really god start for us. It makes complete sense for the Armed Forces to be helping their former colleagues indirectly in this way. I’m in awe that anyone could cycle for a week. It shows the stuff our armed forces are made of.” Commander Anderson said: “This is a real challenge for us all taking part – a real test for all the lads. It’s great that the senior non-commissioned ratings on board are setting a good example to those junior ratings and others. This event comes after the ship has been in a major refit and is therefore, ideal timing for team-building as we all reform as a ship’s company and begin training as a fighting unit with the ship undergoing trials later.” Care After Combat ensures former soldiers, airmen and sailors who have been laid low by various issues, including alcoholism can get back on their feet and create better futures for themselves. The mission statement is ‘to help to maintain and promote camaraderie in the veterans community for those feeling vulnerable or at unrest with society. We look to provide professional assistance where possible for the well-being of the Veteran and their family.’ For further information visit www.careaftercombat.org

A total of 14 cyclists will be involved in the fund-raiser on July 4 and 5, riding from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. Jennie Morgan and her husband Dave are both keen cyclists and earlier this year they decided to do the ‘coast-to-coast’ ride from North Devon to Plymouth. “Before we knew it a number of friends said that they would like to join us,” said Jennie, who works at A Home after Halls. “Another friend then suggested that we might like to raise money for charity and he nominated Crohns and Colitis UK because his cousin has the disease,” she said. They have set a target of raising £3000 and are well on the way to achieving that figure thanks partly to a group of 20 walkers who covered 20 miles in aid of the charity, raising nearly £1270 in the process. The walk, organised by Zoe Oliver, took place at the end of May between Liskeard and the Jamaica Inn - and back,

100-mile coast-tocoast challenge said Jennie, “and others who will be travelling from as far afield as Wales and London.” The friend’s cousin who has Crohn’s - Mike Clarke - will join the cyclists for the final stages of the 100-mile ride. Jennie said: “We need to not only raise funds for Crohn’s and Colitis UK but also increase awareness of a disease which affected 300,000 people in the UK. They suffer physically and emotionally due to inflammatory bowel disease and funds are urgently needed to help find a cure.” Donations to the cause can be made by visiting www. justgiving.com/jennie-morgan1 or text PLYM51 to 70070.

“I have contacted about 25 celebrities who have Crohns disease on Twitter and I’m delighted that some have retweeted details about the ride and we’ve also had donations from a number of others,” added Jennie.

Summertime and the livin’ is easy?

So post the election furore, we are pleased to see summer weather is now peeking through the clouds.

on finances in terms of holiday costs but on the other hand, summer offers more opportunities for “low cost” days out in our local parks and other free amenities.

Ella Fitzgerald’s song spoke of a summertime where ‘your Daddy’s rich and your Ma is good-looking’.

For instance, the annual Unity Festival being held on 29 and 30 August (bank holiday weekend) on the Hoe is a great couple of days out, offering free music and other entertainment. Why not put this date in your diaries?

But in an era where so often a child’s birth Daddy and Ma are no longer together, such dual parental support is not there and significant additional family pressure is created. Also jobs or health may have been lost and consequently financial demands take their toll. In such cases is the living really going to be that easy?

We are still hearing of big firms such as Boots cutting jobs and of reductions in the CBI’s growth forecasts in the light of more financial instability in Greece and uncertainty about the impending EU referendum. However, the country still re-elected Mr Cameron and his government, with (by most opinion polls) an unforeseen majority so the national feeling surely must be that things are fairly OK generally? Summer might put additional pressure

It was opened by Councillor Ian Tuffin, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, and Professor Patricia Livsey, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences at the University of Plymouth.

There is a lot of free help around offering guidance as to how to manage finances. www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk has some great resources. Also Christians Against Poverty regularly offer ‘CAP Money’ courses which you can attend in person and meet others locally with a similar desire to take more control over their personal finances. Look at www.capmoney.org.uk to find an upcoming course near you. If there isn’t one

coming up please email me and I will get one on the schedule!

Conference highlighted challenges and changes in adult safeguarding

A range of renowned speakers gave presentations at the conference on areas including safeguarding adults from abuse and neglect under the Care Act, current guidance in regard to issues of self neglect, safeguarding in health settings, and the debate surrounding the right to intervene in adults’ lives, before a Q&A session at the end of the conference.

Whatever else may be happening, living can often be made easier by taking as much control of your personal finances as you can. Admittedly there are unforeseen circumstances that might arise that rock budgets, but notwithstanding these most items of regular income and expenditure can be controlled with some personal discipline.

Through those courses and a programme of academic research, we are influencing the carers, health workers and policy makers of the future. We also have a range of support programmes in place, enabling care leavers to achieve their ambitions, and this conference will be an opportunity to share our expertise and potentially learn new ways of working in the future.”

Speakers at the event included: Rt. Hon Sir James Munby, President of the Court of Protection and President of the Family Division – Focusing on ‘the nature and limits of intervention in adults’ lives.’ Renowned author Michael Mandelstam - spoke about protecting adults from abuse and neglect, in the context of the new Care Act. Pensions scams – New pensions freedoms from April 2015 give people more control over their money and so it will be vital that they make informed decisions about their savings. Phrases such as ‘one-off investment opportunities’, ‘free pension reviews’, ‘legal loopholes’, ‘cash bonus’, ‘up-front cash sum, ‘government endorsement’, ‘pension liberation,’ are commonly used in pension scams. The initial approach is often an out-ofthe-blue phone call, text or email or even sometimes a doorstep caller. Or it could be via an imitation website. Scammers may offer early access to pension pots for people aged under 55 even though this is only possible in exceptional circumstances. After building up trust the scammer persuades victims to act quickly sometimes even sending documents by courier to seal the deal. The sting in the tail is that victims not only lose their savings but could also end up in debt due to the tax bill that then applies. Experience

Standing on the Solid Rock I often make the following statement during my radio programmes. ‘Faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love.’ It obviously comes from the ancient scriptures and is a scripture I meditate upon a lot because for me, as a Christian, it sums up my spiritual world view and works for me even in the tough times. Faith is a conviction of belief and action in what or who you trust in, cling to and believe or rely on. Hope is the process and ultimate destination of your world view which through the experience of faith helps me understand why I’m here; what life means to me and what happens when I die. Hope also sustains me in the tough times when my natural senses don’t see a solution. Love is a tricky definition, because I grew up in the 60s and love was more about what you could get out of a relationship not what you put into it - people can sometimes use each other as commodities and throw each other away, all in the guise of romantic love.

but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Now, I’m a great believer in romantic love and my wife’s book Exit Darcus is a great novel which helps put romance into a beautiful context, but love is a much broader definition. At most weddings 1 Corinthians 13 is read out and quoted because it is beautiful. “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

You see this scripture describes Jesus Christ Himself who as God, personified Himself and entered our experience as a man and endured all that we endure and more, even the crucifixion on a cross. He defeated death and destroyed the power of sin and destructive lifestyles in those who put their faith in Him through His resurrection and says to His followers, “If you put your faith, hope and love in me, I will guide you

home through the power of my Holy Spirit to eternal life where there is no pain or tears.” He will say ‘well done’ to those who learned how to love and endure as He did, ‘you will have learned how to love like I did through committing you free will and choices to me, even in the adverse times when you didn’t even trust it was worth it.’ There will always be a tension between faith and reason in the Western World, but a life well lived can be more rational and real than a reasoned life which hasn’t experienced this gift of faith through His grace. The former Chief Rabbi, Lord Sachs, on the BBC Andrew Marr show on June 14 stated that the theory of secularisation is fraying around the edges and we may be entering the most religious time the world has ever encountered. If so, what world view will you stand on when the winds of adversity blow? My first programme on Plymouth Sound radio in 1983 was called the ‘Solid Rock of Jesus Christ’. It wasn’t called that just because of the music. He has been Solid ever since.

Plymouth City Council and Literature Works are on the look-out for wonderful wordsmiths between the ages of 16 and 19 to apply for the honorary post. This is the 4th year the talent-scouting competition is taking place, following its successful launch in 2012 when Plymouth became the first City in the South West to have a Young City Laureate. The post is open to someone who relishes creative writing of all forms from verse to short stories and who would love to perform their work to audiences. Councillor Sue McDonald Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health, said: “The Young City Laureate for Plymouth will encourage and inspire other young people to pick up their pens and microphones. They will be called upon to celebrate special events in the city, as well as perform in libraries, schools, festivals and other community events. This is a really fantastic opportunity for someone and I really hope it means we uncover the next generation of talented writers in Plymouth.” To apply you need to be aged between 16 and 19 and live, work or go to school, college or university in Plymouth. You will need to submit two samples of your writing - one an original poem, piece of creative writing or spoken word piece inspired by ‘Plymouth’ and the other, one additional piece of creative writing. The closing date for entries is Friday September 18. The winning entry will be chosen by a panel of judges from Plymouth City Council, Plymouth University and Literature Works. The first prize will be an iPad, with prizes for 2nd and 3rd place as well. The winning applicant for Plymouth Young City Laureate will be announced at the launch of the Plymouth International Book Festival in October 2015 to which their family and friends will be invited. Entries may be submitted by post or email and recordings (audio or video) will also need a copy of the text included. Post or deliver your entries to: The Young City Laureate, Literature Works, c/o Peninsula Arts, Roland Levinsky Building, Drake Circus, Plymouth, PL4 8AA or email info@ literatureworks.org.uk. Make the subject title of the email ‘Plymouth Young City Laureate 2015’. Please make sure your entry includes your name, address, and mobile phone number.

There’s no business like show business – so make it yours!

City College staff were treated to a two-course lunch in the college’s PL1 restaurant, followed by the presentation of the awards by College Principal, Phil Davies, and Vice Chair of Governors, William Woyka. Phil Davies said: “The staff awards celebration is a way to recognise and celebrate all of the good work that goes on here at the college. It’s the official way to say ‘thank you’ to those who demonstrate, above and beyond, their commitment to delivering excellent services for students, customers and other stakeholders.”

The hunt is on for a young person who’s passionate about poetry and writing to become Plymouth’s next Young City Laureate.

Lecturers Chris Brown and Rebecca Clarke, as well as the College’s Health & Social Care and Childcare teams, were presented with their awards on Thank a Teacher Day, Friday 12 June, at a ceremony in the college’s PL1 Restaurant. Their commitment to broadening the student experience with international travel and cultural exchanges were also highly commended. As silver teaching award winners, Chris, Rebecca and the Healthcare Team will now be considered for a gold teaching award in their categories, which will be announced at a ceremony to be held in London on Sunday October 18. College’s free day of fun for all the family City College Plymouth is opening its Kings Road site to the local community on Saturday July 4 for a free day of fun for the whole family. Alongside a whole range of activities, including animal encounters, a farmers’ market and an electric car show, the college’s computing and games development teams will be hosting ‘The Ultimate Cosplay Contest’. Cosplay, short for costume play, is like a fashion show with a geeky twist. Instead of clothes coming from high-end designers, the costumes are based on video games, anime, manga, TV shows, movies and books. The Cosplay competition will be based on computer/video game characters. Each entrant takes to the stage, showing off their (preferably) handmade outfits, competing for a chance to win amazing prizes and the coveted Best in Show award! Sam Harvey, lecturer in games

development at the college, said: “Entrants will be marked on the likeness to the character, craftsmanship (did you make the costume yourself?), presentation (how you look in the costume), wow factor (overall impact of the costume) and originality. “We will be welcoming contestants to our gaming lounge any time between 11am and 1.30pm to complete a short form, pose for a picture, and talk to the judges for a few minutes before heading off to enjoy the many other exciting aspects of the day, including archery

Young Jasper is an inspiration to Constantin One of the best things about being in a large group is the diversity of its members, and Plymouth Philharmonic Choir prides itself in welcoming singers of any age or creed.

years ago at about this time I had to drop as family issues had forced me to leave the city I used to live in for 35 years.”

Two of its most recent members vividly demonstrate this; youngest recruit nine year old Jasper Bass and Romanian engineer Constantin Ciubotarasu. They are very different people from very different backgrounds brought together by a love of classical choral music.

“Up until recently, I did not even think about a comeback to singing in a choir, honestly. But it happened that two ladies I am friendly with invited me to the concert. They knew about my interest in classical music.

Constantin came to the UK from Romania in 2010 but as a single parent of a teenage boy and with work commitments he didn’t have much time for a social life:

“As in any new circumstances, you feel a bit shy and I was concerned about the choir’s perceptions regarding a non-English new colleague.

Jasper goes to Hyde Park School in Plymouth and he was inspired by his mum Sarah who used to sing with the choir before starting her family.

“It seems I have been received positively by all of them. If we ourselves, with our various backgrounds, can join our efforts and make use of our musical talent along with nationally recognised professional soloists then this is a big enterprise!

On re-joining she brought Jasper along too. He says, “I don’t have any singing lessons but I still have fun! I joined because my Mum was wondering if I could manage it and I had a try and had a great time so I carried on.” With the confidence of youth Jasper was un-phased by the massed voices of the 150 or so other singers: “I found it quite hard when I started but I was determined to keep trying. The singers around me are very nice and they like to talk to me about my experience in the choir.” Jasper’s first concert was Verdi’s Requiem: “It is very exciting to sing with a big orchestra especially with such a big audience and all the echoes. I do get a bit nervous if I get something wrong because probably there are a

“And, of course, such big productions are worth being watched by our fellow citizens. And I myself do feel happy being a part of this amazing enterprise.” Jasper and Constantin pictured with the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir lot of people looking at me! Sometimes I did get lost in all the pages of music but my Mum showed me where we were. I think that choral music is very exciting and expressive, and a lot more young children should get involved.”

As Jasper sang the Verdi Requiem in the front row of the choir, 52-year-old Constantin Ciubotarasu sat in the audience and enjoyed it so much it inspired him to join too, as he explains: “I have no formal musical education at all. I joined a church choir for many years. But ten

KidsKope mentoring project Local authors Penny McFarlane and Nina Wroe have recently published a book about their therapeutic work with young people in Plymouth.

Mentoring’ was held at Marjons where Nina and Penny discussed with University staff, students and local educationalists the benefits of delivering a safe and effective intervention programme.

The book is titled the KidsKope Peer Mentoring Programme and details a therapeutic approach to help children and young people build resilience and deal with conflict.

Nina said: “There is a recognition that we need to do more to help young people cope with the stresses of modern life. Much of the preventative work has been squeezed by the recession, with the emphasis being on trouble shooting the most serious cases. The work of KidsKope and similar projects is an important step in redressing the balance by early intervention.”

The KidsKope Project is a short term training programme for teenagers to train as therapeutic mentors to help younger children. It works with groups of volunteers using role play and creative activities to help resolve areas of conflict in a peaceful constructive manner. In going through their training they examine their own pressures as well as anticipating those that may effect other young people. Recently Nina and Penny were invited to run a workshop at the University of St Mark and St John and the student teachers were able to experience some of the techniques used by the project. They enjoyed the programme which equips them to deliver KidsKope in schools and other youth work settings.

Charity concert raises £1560

A charity concert organised by Plymouth Soroptimists and Plympton Rotary Club has raised £1560. The recent concert Celebrating Young Performers, was hosted by Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University and supported by Simon Ible, musical director of Peninsula Arts. Previous concerts have been very successful, not only in giving young people the opportunity to perform in a professional setting, but also in raising money for charity.

Marjons students participating in a group workshop based on the KidsKope Project ‘Tangles Activity’

This concert was voted the best so far. Cheques for £780 each were handed over to the two charities supported by the concert. Devon Air Ambulance and the Royal

Marines Charitable Trust were extremely grateful to receive the cheques. Sylvia Bedbrook of Plymouth Soroptimists said: “Since having Rotary to join us in this venture it has enabled us to encompass a larger audience and we have settled into a comfortable partnership. “It is such a very special event, not only raising money for charity but in celebrating our young people and the outstanding music they create. Young people in our community often get bad press in the media – a case of the few spoiling things for the many. “We have found such amazing talent and being able to use the prestigious Roland Levinsky Theatre makes our performers feel special.”

Flags raised to celebrate founder of world-famous stamp business The first in a series of flags celebrating Edward Stanley Gibbons, the Plymouth-born founder of the renowned Stanley Gibbons stamp business, has been raised in Plymouth’s Hoe Garden. The flags are the brainchild of artist Joanna Brinton, who won a public art commission from Plymouth City Council (supported by Plymouth Culture) to showcase local artists and the city’s unique history. Born in 1840, Edward Stanley Gibbons started his stamp collecting business in his

father’s pharmacy shop at 15 Treville Street in Plymouth. His enterprise took flight and today Stanley Gibbons Ltd is highly regarded as the home and market leader of stamp collecting. 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of the company’s famous stamp catalogues and artists based in the South West were invited to create a new piece of public art celebrating his achievements. Joanna, an associate artist at Plymouth University, proposed a series of flags based on the triangular ‘Cape of Good Hope’ stamps that helped establish Stanley Gibbons in 1863. Her idea was chosen by a panel of representatives from the Council, Plymouth Culture, Arts Council England, Plymouth Arts Centre and the Hoe Conservation and Residents Association.

Artist Joanne Brinton pictured with youngsters from St Andrew’s

Joanna is involving the local community in the project and recently held a workshop at St Andrew’s CE Primary School,

where Year 3 pupils learned about Stanley Gibbons and designed their own flags. Together with the artist they created a design for the Hoe Garden called ‘The clouds could be like hands joining’, which celebrates the idea of weather bringing change and possibility, friendship and love. Pupils carried their handmade flags in a procession to the Hoe and the school’s specially designed flag flies alongside two other flags bearing the words ‘GOOD’ and ‘HOPE’. Two more community designed flags will be raised in the Hoe Garden in September and next spring. Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said: “We launched the Hoe Garden art commission to help showcase South West artists and provide a new and interesting focal point for visitors to the Hoe each year, as well as celebrate different aspects of Plymouth’s history. “As part of the initiative we encourage artists to engage with the local community and it’s great that Jo has involved school children in her project. Not only has this given them an insight into an important figure from Plymouth’s past but also a chance to see their creative work on Youngsters from St Andrew’s Primary School pictured with Joanne Brinton and the public display.” city council representatives

“We visited the World Beard & Moustache Championships in Brighton in 2007 and really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere” said Mike.

The event will raise funds for the Devon and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trusts, and is being organised by Clair and Mike Wellsbury-Nye from Bere Alston.

“After that I started growing a handlebar moustache, and last September I entered the Business Class category at the British Beard & Moustache Championships in Bath. I didn’t win, but that wasn’t really the point we had a brilliant weekend.”

Headline sponsor is Plymouth hairdresser

Louis Holland, co-owner at Daniel Lewis

Hair Salon, is Mike’s barber. “When he told me about the championships in Bath it sounded so much fun” said Louis “so I suggested we should have an event in Plymouth. Lots of my customers have great beards and moustaches, and are really looking forward to it.”

“Mike and I recently went to a competition in Yeovil,” said Clair “and there were people from all ages and all walks of life – including some dressed as a Viking, aviator, Jedi and strongman. Everyone cheers for every

competitor, they just cheer that little bit louder for their friends and favourites.”

All sizes and styles of beard and moustache are encouraged to enter, and with seven categories to choose from, it’s not just the biggest beard that wins. There are also categories for ladies and children’s handmade beards, and spectators are very welcome. For further details and to buy tickets, see www.dcbmc.co.uk or email info@dcbmc. co.uk

Hub of creativity in Stoke Village A Plymouth mother of two has opened a new shop in Stoke Village to showcase the work of creative entrepreneurs involved in the wedding industry. The Wedding Hub is owned and run by award-winning wedding stationery designer Danielle Donnelly. Danielle has run her wedding stationery business called Faithful Designs from her home in St Judes for five years - making all the items by hand. Danielle said: “Like a lot of people who produce hand-made items I struggled to find retail outlets where I could promote and sell my work. Running an online business is often the only way to reach customers – and I knew many other people involved in various aspects of the wedding industry were in the same boat.

“Their former premises were just what I needed and it was all sorted Danielle Donnelly outside her new shop in Stoke in rapid time.” cakes, cake toppers, bridesmaids tutus, paper ships with fellow wedding businesses so that She first saw the premises in March and spent flowers and displays, antique jewellery and I can help those planning their events in any the next couple of months visiting the shop photography. way that I can. every evening, decorating and fitting it out in the style she wanted. “Someone once said to me ‘excellence attracts “I am not a wedding planner, but I can help excellence’ and that is the ethos behind The Wedding Hub,” said Danielle.

She said: “For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about all areas of art and design. I love to be creative and let my imagination run wild!”

My business slogan is ‘inspiring your creativity’ and that is what we hope to achieve for brides and grooms who are looking for something special.”

As well as offering a space where couples can discuss their requirements with the team of suppliers, Danielle is also planning a range of workshops mainly relating to the wedding and bridal industry.

“It was too good an opportunity to miss and although it has taken a long time to get to the point when we were ready to open for business, the wait has been worthwhile.”

The Butchers Block opened in May and is run by Paul Smith, who used to work in Stoke’s previous butcher’s shop with his father Paul, senior.

Paul said that the stringent environmental health issues meant that the renovation of the premises took longer than anticipated.

Both Paul and his father worked for Dewhurst, the leading butcher’s chain, before it was sold off after going into receivership in the 1990s.

“I had been looking for a shop for ages and I had a good idea of how it would look. I came to Stoke Village one evening and saw that Rain Hairdressers were moving into the old Harmonie shop next door.

Summer

Stoke Village once again boasts a traditional butchers - after an absence of nearly 15 years.

baskets

Paul, the younger, had followed his father into the butchery trade training as a butcher after leaving school at the age of 15. “Dad was one of the top Dewhurst managers in the region and when the company got into difficulties he managed to acquire their shop in Stoke Village. “We ran the shop for 10 years, but then competition from supermarkets made it increasingly difficult. The shop eventually closed in 2001,” said Paul. Paul junior had left the business two years earlier as the omens for the business already looked difficult. In 2000 his parents took over the Blockhouse Inn, opposite the former butcher’s shop, and Paul junior becoming landlord in 2005 - so he is certainly no stranger to Stoke Village. He said: “I enjoy being a landlord, but had always missed the butchers side and felt that if the right premises came along I would like to open a butcher’s shop again. “The market has changed over the years and the big supermarkets no longer have quite the dominance that they used to. The horse meat scandal and other high-profile issues have knocked public confidence.”

Paul wants to ensure that the Butchers Block is fully involved with local community events, such as the Devonport Park fun days and the Farmers Market at Blockhouse Park. “I also want to introduce a free delivery service in the future as well as offering a wholesale service for customers who have large orders.” The Butcher’s Block is open six days a week from 9am to 5pm.
