Young people in Plymouth can now sign up to fun, free and exciting activities this summer as part of the popular Summer Mix programme.

From August 1 to 26, Plymouth City Council’s Youth Services Team is offering young people in the city hundreds of fantastic, free activities to liven up their summer.

Summer Mix is open to any young person living in Plymouth aged 11 to 19 (up to 25 for those with a disability) and opportunities range from totally different experiences like bubble football, Come Dine With Me and Bushcraft, to really practical courses aimed at getting a step into employment like, accredited Playwork, NPLQ lifeguarding, Level 2 Food Safety in Catering and accredited Paediatric and Emergency first aid.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young people, Councillor Terri Beer said: “I’m really excited that Summer Mix is back this year and the range of courses available this year is amazing, so I’m quite sure there will be something for everyone.”

Not only are there a huge range of courses available, youth centres in Estover, Honicknowle, Southway and Efford will be open throughout the whole of August providing a range of community fun days

and other activities for young people.

Summer Mix is organised and funded by Plymouth City Council’s Youth Services, and supported by a variety of other organisations. Plymouth City Council’s Sports Development Unit are providing a fantastic programme of free sporting activities from family activities to climbing, basketball, street games and much more.

Councillor Beer continued: “This year’s Summer Mix is a real community project and I’m really pleased that we have been able to support a number of local organisations to provide these activities for our young people.”

Courses and activities will be assigned on a first come first served basis, so young people wanting to put their name down for their favourite course are being encouraged to enrol as early as possible. Booking forms are now available and registration and booking begins on June 27.

loans for city residents

People in Plymouth who want to be able to spread the cost of buying goods but avoid paying high interest can now do so thanks to a scheme which has now launched in the city. Social enterprise lender Fair for You, which has been welcomed by Plymouth City Council, is offering transparent and affordable credit to Plymouth families who find it difficult to access to mainstream finance. The new service, which is backed by Buy with Confidence, is being launched during Armed Forces Week – look out for advertising around the city coming very soon. The new alternative lender offers the opportunity for people to shop for brand new essentials like fridges, washing machines, cots and baby paraphernalia at regular high street prices on its ‘digital high street’, and buy them on low-cost credit, with affordable weekly or fortnightly repayments. Fair for You Enterprise Community Interest Company (CIC) is a social lender (owned by a charity of the same name), and in its first six months of trading has already saved its customers £518,000 when compared to similar items offered by high cost rent-toown (RTO) lenders. Angela Clements, CEO and Founder of Fair for You, said “We’re delighted to be working with the City Council to highlight our offering to local people, and provide an affordable alternative to high cost short term credit providers. As part of this partnership, we’re delighted that we have recently become the first recognised lender to achieve the City Council’s Trading Standards, ‘Buy with Confidence’ accreditation.”

“Almost all our customers have got caught out by high cost credit, often the Rent to Own or weekly payment stores. Many have lost their items or paid late fees and end up juggling tight family finances to keep repayments going and avoid having the item repossessed. Our lending is about providing dignity, choice and value to many people who are often unable to access mainstream finance when they need essential items for their home and family. “These savings make a huge difference to each family, sometimes over £1,000 per item over the term of a loan. That’s transformational, as it gives the family the opportunity to set some cash aside for the treats or to start a savings account, and sets households on the path to becoming financially independent and debt-free. It’s a huge privilege to do what we do, and the reviews on Trustpilot are a reflection of the work of the whole team, and we are delighted that our work is recognised and so valuable to our customers.” Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities for Plymouth City Council, said: “We welcome the launch of Fair For You in Plymouth, which provides a much needed low interest, ethical way for people – including those on lower incomes – to be able to buy the household and other essential goods without getting into crippling debt.

“We know the scheme has been successful in a number of other places and we believe this provides a good alternative for local people who need to buy goods but don’t have the funds upfront to pay in full. “Don’t forget as well there are a number of other services

Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, in front of bus shelter advertising at Royal Parade

you can access in Plymouth, from the local Credit Union to Advice Plymouth, if you need financial advice and support or if you want to find out about ways that you can borrow and save.” Fair for You customer, and Plymouth-based serviceman, Joe Coutts said: “Quite a lot of places don’t give credit services to the military. I think it’s more of a security reason more than anything.I thought Fair for You was good for customer service, because the issue was that I live at work, and I live at a different address during the week. But as soon as we got that sorted it was pretty sound, I was happy with everything.”

Easy-read version of public health report is launched An easy-read version of Plymouth’s Public Health Annual Report is now available.

Designed for people with learning disabilities, the report includes highlights of what Plymouth City Council and its partners will be doing to help improve local people’s health. The report sets out the Thrive Plymouth programme, which is our ten year plan to improve health and wellbeing of people in Plymouth. The priorities for lifestyle changes are to encourage people to eat more healthily, do more exercise, stop smoking, and drink less alcohol. Changing these behaviours are known to make the most difference to the most people. It also looks at the work taking place to reduce health inequalities in the

city.

Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Plymouth City Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to launch this new easy read version of the Public Health Annual Report for people with Learning Disabilities in Plymouth. It’s important that we make sure that all of our local residents are able to learn about health issues in Plymouth and what we are doing to improve things.” Professor Kelechi Nnoaham, Director of Public Health for Plymouth City Council said: “It’s really important that we engage with local people in as many ways as we can and make our information as accessible as possible. People in Goosewell are currently likely to live ten years longer than those who

Pictured (from left) Gloria Fry (who produced the Easy Read version of the Public Health report) with Professor Kelechi Nnoaham and Councillor Lynda Bowyer

live in Devonport and it is important we understand why and what we can do to narrow this gap.” The new Easy-Read version has been produced by Gloria Fry, Service User Consultation Officer at Plymouth City

Council. You can download the report from our website here and the report is also available on request by contacting odph@plymouth.gov.uk More information on Thrive Plymouth is available at www.plymouth.gov.uk/thrive

Family-friendly events at Smeaton’s Tower Plymouth City Council’s arts and heritage service has launched a brand new series of family-friendly events at Smeaton’s Tower. Visitors will be able to paint ‘Sunny Seaside Scenes’ on Sunday July 17 and make ‘Super Seabird Puppets’ on Sunday August 21. They can then make ‘Big and Mini Lighthouse’ sculptures on Sunday September 11 to mark Heritage Open Days 2016. On Sunday October 16 – the date the first light was lit in Smeaton’s Tower in 1759 – visitors will be able to

make ‘Fish, Ships and Lighthouse’ bunting featuring the tower, boats and candles that would have burnt bright out on the Eddystone Reef. Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “We’re officially claiming Sundays as ‘Smeaton’s Days’! These events will take place come rain or shine and will give families a chance to get creative in and around one of the city’s most historic buildings. I hope everyone will make the most of this opportunity to celebrate our wonderful lighthouse over the next few months.”

All activities will take place from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4pm and people can drop in for as little or as long as they like. There is no need to book in advance. Admission fees are just £3 for adults and £1.50 for children aged five to 16. Under-fives go free and a family ticket for up to two adults and three children is also available for £8.50. For more information see our Smeaton’s Tower events page or call 01752 304774.

This year around 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are expected to take part in 17 days of the Olympiad, competing across 306 events in Rio. Owner of the business, Mark Nesbitt said; “Statistics show that the number of children who are obese is growing – indeed it has more than tripled in England over the past 25 years; at Fizz Bug we are passionate about combatting this trend. We are true devotees to the improvement of the health and well-being of children in Plymouth and events like the Olympics really give the idea of making a healthy change some momentum.” “We hope we will make a significant difference to the lives of children across Plymouth and Devon. Our Fizz Bug Mission is to enthuse, encourage and educate pupils, teachers and parents in the positive benefits of physical activity and good nutrition to light a fire that will burn for a lifetime. Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality and that’s why we simply cannot let this opportunity pass us by.” Taking place throughout July, Schools are being asked to join forces with Fizz Bug for an Olympic Relay Challenge. Each school taking part will submit teams of 4 that will compete in a 4 x 400 metre relay, which when added to the total mileage completed by all the city schools taking part should cover the distance Plymouth to Rio! Schools are being invited to walk or run it as part of a record breaking attempt to inspire fitness in young children and their families and build excitement around the Olympic Games. Mark said; “People from all over the world will watch as the world’s greatest athletes compete against each other to win medals, achieve personal bests, break world records and maybe most important of all, inspire generations of young people around the world to love sport, be active and reach for goals that they never thought possible. This opportunity should be taken advantage of and that’s what we hope to do.” In July the team from Fizz Bug will visit the schools that wish to take part to organise and record the event. Each school that applies will submit the entire school in teams of 4. Each team member will run/walk 400 metres and be entered in a Plymouth Schools Olympic Relay League. The city-wide event will then be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records. Autism Assemble launch new Portal venture in Torpoint

The Portal, a hub for people with autism and related conditions, has been launched by Autism Assemble. Autism Assemble was founded in 2014 by Jack Whitfield as a social enterprise for autism identity, advocacy and empowerment for Devon and Cornwall. As the director of this ever expanding enterprise he said: “We aim to provide opportunities for accessible social groups, workshops and services that go beyond the bare essentials for autism provision and recognise that being autistic makes you capable of awesome things.” The Portal is a located at 62 Fore Street, Torpoint, which is within walking distance of the Torpoint ferry. Among the projects happening there are music and munch nights, mindfulness sessions and Autism Assemble is set to announce academic events and art events. Autism Assemble currently runs a free social club at The Bread and Roses pub in Plymouth, every other Wednesday at 6pm. Anyone wanting to find out more about The Portal is welcome to go along for a chat and enjoy meeting some likeminded people. The current attendees of the social club are loving what Autsim Assemble have done so far. One of them, Sandra, said: “The club is full of great people - it’s relaxed and supportive and it’s comfortable for everyone to “be yourself.” Autism Assemble activities include social clubs; transition services for primary/secondary school, college and work for autistic people and their families; autism networking; workshops and seminars; gigs and live recordings; arts and crafts; selling items made by autistic people and overnight art studio residential. Planners give go ahead for £34 million History Centre Exciting plans to celebrate Plymouth’s amazing culture and heritage in a new, worldclass visitor attraction have been approved by the city’s planning committee.

Detailed plans for the £34 million History Centre were given the green light in June after planning officers recommended the committee approved the scheme which is a stunning combination of conserving the existing Edwardian buildings and at the rear, building new extensions. The new centre will cover 3,500 square metres and will include exhibition and gallery spaces, including five permanent galleries, five exhibition spaces for local and national touring exhibitions and six spaces for specific artistic projects. Galleries will celebrate and explore subjects such as Plymothians who have been influential on the world stage such as Drake and Scott of the Antarctic; the city’s relationship with the Royal Navy; life in Plymouth below the waterline, including marine life and shipwrecks;

Plymouth’s prehistoric landscape and the West Country’s artistic legacy, including Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Cottonian collection and the Newlyn School of Artists. Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “This is a critical stage for the History Centre. It is a hugely exciting scheme which will catapult our cultural offer into a new league. “This huge project will not only transform days out for visitors but for families and friends, researchers and learners here in Plymouth. It will also transform the area around North Hill. It is a very comprehensive project.” The application has three elements: • To convert and extend the former library and join it to the museum to form an extended and enhanced museum and archive, with a new entrance onto Tavistock Place. Some annexes and part of the rear of the library would need to be demolished to build new exhibition and study space with an archive above to the rear of the Museum and Library. • To convert and restore the former St Luke’s

Church as a gallery, with a new extension to the side for deliveries of national exhibitions coming to Plymouth.

• To create new public space in Tavistock Place between the Museum and St Luke’s, with new pedestrian links through to North Hill and to Chapel Street creating a more socially vibrant feel to the area. The proposals will turn Tavistock Place into a public square, something that it used to be before the current museum and library was built. A refurbished St Luke’s to be converted to a large art gallery that will open up Plymouth and the South West peninsula to major touring exhibitions. Cabinet member for Culture, Councillor Glenn Jordan added: “This is a massively important project for the city of Plymouth and there’s a lot of enthusiasm from all walks of life in Plymouth for this project. The team has done an enormous amount of work to get this ready for this significant milestone.”

Closure order on Keyham house A closure order has been granted on a house in Plymouth after repeated complaints of anti-social behaviour, violence and drug dealing. Plymouth Magistrates granted the order on 86 Keat Street after ongoing issues which made life difficult for neighbours. The order was applied for by Plymouth City Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team following an approach by Devon and Cornwall Police, and was supported by both the police and Plymouth Community Homes. The occupant of the flat is Hannah Slee. There were numerous complaints from local residents with regard to considerable anti social behaviour, violence, drug use and supply. The Anti-Social Behaviour Team worked with the local community and undertook a number of interviews with local people who clearly evidenced disorderly behaviour arising from the flat as well as several complaints in respect of drugs and noise over a prolonged period of time. Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities for Plymouth City Council, said: “The court’s decision to grant this closure order at Keat Street sends out a strong message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in Plymouth. I would like to thank Plymouth Community Homes and Devon and Cornwall Police for their support as it shows what can happen when everyone works together. “I would particularly like to say a special thank you to the local residents, who have shown great courage in coming forward to give evidence about the anti-social behaviour they have been experiencing. We are pleased to be able to work together with people in the local community to respond to their concerns in this way.” Inspector Sean Harris of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Today’s closure order demonstrates that police and partner organisations will always work together to take positive action against antisocial behaviour. “The new Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act helps us build on the solid foundations we have in Plymouth and strong history of partnership working and we will continue to work jointly with the council and PCH to tackle any reports of problems. “Antisocial behaviour significantly impacts people’s quality of life. If anyone is suffering similar problems within their neighbourhood we would urge them not to suffer in silence and to come forward to talk to police or report concerns anonymously through Crimestoppers.” Steve Ford, Head of Homes and Neighbourhoods for Plymouth Community Homes, said: “We work hard with our residents to resolve any problems and a closure order is always a last resort for us when all other options have been exhausted. “However, anti-social behaviour can blight the lives of residents and we are keen to make sure that all our tenants feel safe and happy in their homes. “We’d like to thank the local residents who gave evidence so that the legal action could go ahead, resulting in a safer community.”

Priest with a passion for mission A team of young interns were staying with him in Plymouth at the time of interview.

Story by Karen Pilkington It was great to meet Father David Way recently and welcome him to Plymouth as the parish priest of not only St Peter’s Wyndham Square, but also St Thomas’s on Royal Navy Avenue in Keyham and St James the Less in Ham, a position he has held since August last year.

And he shares the commitment of many young people to caring for the environment. His last church was the first in Wales to put solar panels on the roof, and he is keen to make more of the proximity of St James the Less to the beautiful Ham Woods. He would be more than happy to open the doors of the church to muddy-wellingtoned feet if the opportunity arose. Fr David embodies the commitment of spiritual leaders Archbishop Welby and Pope Francis, both of whom he is very much a fan of, for the church to re look at how it does mission, how it gets out into the world and gets its hands dirty.

It was also really reassuring to meet a man who was clearly in the mould of his predecessor Fr Sam Philpott MBE, much loved in Plymouth for his passionate involvement in the community in very practical as well as spiritual ways.

“ I was not looking for a new job, being very happy in the beautiful Welsh valleys, explains Fr David, “However I had some very happy memories of being a child and later a youth leader at summer camps held at Maker Heights, and had popped into Plymouth on my way back home from Cornwall, which kindled my thoughts towards the city.

Fr David has clearly already made an impact, grinning as he recounts that when he met local councillors they were, he felt, rather taken aback that he was not asking for money, but rather how can the three churches he looks after, meet the needs of their local communities. Indeed he has on his study wall a quote from Pope Francis, that perfectly sums up his own dreams to see his churches used daily, “I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.” His commitment to social action is shared by his wife Susan who is National Homeless Project Manager for the Church Army.

conferences and celebrations that need access to well appointed kitchens and toilet facilities. St Thomas’s, which seats 50, is a much more intimate venue and ideal for smaller gatherings.

Father David explains that he feels it is more important to get involved with everyone in his communities, and open up the beautiful churches to common use, than to keep those buildings clean and tidy but empty for most of the week.

Although each church has its unique atmosphere created by prayer, worship, and contemplation, the space is not exclusive. Indeed Father David hosted an art exhibition in his previous parish church which also happened to be in the home town of rock band the Stereophonics.

He adds that all three churches provide great spaces for many types of use. Both St Peters and St James the Less have large, acoustically excellent spaces with removable seating for music events, art exhibitions,

“A man came up to me and asked did I not have a problem with the worship of lead singer Kelly Jones, as almost every picture in the exhibition was of him!, recounts Fr David with a smile.

“I explained that what mattered to me more was that he was in my church discussing the difference between worshipping a person and worshipping God. Fr David has more than a passing interest in music, although he says he is testimony to the fact that not all Welshmen can sing. He spent many years as a DJ, and still uses his expertise as a sound engineer. He was also curate in the inner city Cardiff parish that boasted Shirley Bassey in its Baptism registers. He is also dedicated to nurturing young people in the church, and is still heavily involved in the Walshingham Youth Pilgrimage, which attracts between 700 and 1000 young people every year, and the Year 4 God internship run by the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.

“I feel that God has drawn me here in a similar way as I was called into ministry in my thirties. Back then I was in the middle of a successful career in the motor trade, and my company could not understand why I was leaving for a much lower income. “I would suggest the world is getting tired of materialism. Happiness cannot be bought; and material success does not connect us with something much bigger and deeper that we crave. “Working in partnership with other churches, playing my part in leading people into a deeper relationship with God, and helping my churches meet the needs of their communities are the driving factors in my decision to serve as Parish Priest of St Peters, St James the Less and St Thomas’ If you would like to explore the use of the church buildings, or find out more, Fr David can be contacted on 01752 240119, or fr.davidway@gmail.com.

Fairer prices for you and your family Tracey, Plymouth, June 2016 I’m living with my partner, and five children. Me and my partner have been together for years, but have never got married. My eldest is 13, but he’s got autism so he’s quite hard work, and my 9-year old has been diagnosed with ADHD. The twins are nearly 3. We manage by juggling the childcare between us, but as my partner works fulltime, we also have to use childminders and nurseries. My old fridge freezer wasn’t exactly broken, but it was on its last legs, and we didn’t want to be without one, especially as with the twins, you’ve got to have milk and things, and we couldn’t manage without one. I saw the one that I wanted on Fair for You’s website, it’s big enough for our family, and applied for it. The whole process was so easy. It’s brilliant. The interest is less than half what I would pay with high street rent-to-own stores, and it’s a fixed term to suit me. I know what I could afford to pay each week, so I thought I’d pay more than I need to each week, so it’s cleared off earlier. That way, I can get more things when I need it. I’m one of those people who wants to get one loan paid and cleared before I get another. Before I’d come across Fair for You, there’s only one weekly payments store in

the town. I’ve used them before, and the interest rate is ridiculous. It’s not as though my credit rating is that bad; I’ve got a car on finance and a credit card, but to get credit from the shops is really hard. And when you need something in a hurry and haven’t got the time to save the money, I’ve had to use the weekly payments store. I’m lucky with my partner being in full-time work. A lot of my friends are a lot worse off than me, either because they’re single parents, so they can’t work, or they work but the jobs aren’t great, and they don’t pay well. So if they want anything decent, they’ve got no choice but to go to the weekly payments store. Paying weekly is the only way they can afford it. And they realise how expensive it is, but it’s the fact that sometimes up until now they didn’t have a choice. You’ve got to do it, no matter what you’re paying. Having an alternative like Fair for You is brilliant – I’m delighted. I’d say definitely give Fair for You a try. Not only are their interest rates significantly better than the weekly payment store, but you can also pay over the period that suits you, not them, which is brilliant.

STARS shining in Stoke Local traders and residents group, Stoke Stars, are continuing to keep up the momentum after their successful fund raising recently. The groups four constitutional priorities are: • to secure and fund cctv to protect residents and traders from crime • to secure investment and develop a long term plan to upgrade and renovate the Blockhouse Park (alternatively and perhaps more romantically called Mount Pleasant Redoubt) and to preserve its historical context. • to take over maintenance of the planters in Stoke Village • to act as a liaison between residents, traders, statutory bodies and funding resources. They are delighted to announce that they have been successful in achieving two of these aims already, and are committed to lobby further on behalf of the park and the community.

The planters are now planted again, and the constant battle against those people who persist in dropping rubbish is being waged. The council have now agreed to the installation of another bin which will go some way to curbing the problem. Funding has been gained through Crimestoppers which has allowed for local firm, Universal Fire and Security to begin the process of installing the state of the art cameras in strategic positions to cover as much of the area as possible.

By Karen Pilkington bring perpetrators to trial – local traders had been burgled, had windows broken, and an elderly pedestrian had been robbed last year – stressing the need for better surveillance in the area. PC Blight also explained that the cameras would not just be unobtrusive but would be able to pixilate out residents’ windows and doors, and be password protected to prevent violations to individual privacy.

These will help to finalise a funding bid that will represent the views of the community and could see a substantial part of the 15 million pounds of funding the government have set aside for local community led growth come to this overlooked area.

The group have also been successful in getting a further £22,000 to refurbish the children’s play area in the Blockhouse park, work to start later this year.

Stoke Damerel School are involving their 1500 pupils and their parents with a questionaire to find out their views and ideas for improvement, and the rest of us can get involved by emailing any suggestions and thoughts to Andrew Bray at braya43@hotmail.com

With support from local MP Oliver Colville, they have also secured new signage and information boards about the Redoubt, and the two air raid shelters in the park; and begun planting a community orchard and establishing bee hotels and wildflower meadows to enhance biodiversity in the park. Stoke STARs are determined to continue to lobby for improvements to this remarkable local space, and have funded a feasibility study to look at building a new, architect designed community centre and cafe.

The funding will mean that at least six cameras will be installed and maintained, which link directly via the internet to Devonport Police Station. They can be monitored in real time and will record information and store it for up to 30 days.

The building would replace the existing community centre, run so faithfully by Pat and John Kinsman over that last 33 years, but which is in major need of bringing up to date. It would be situated on the site of the former scouts hut, which has existing access to utilities, bringing down the cost of the build.

PC James Blight said that the cameras would help the police considerably in preventing crime and providing evidence to

The draft proposals are very much in the initial stages, and the group hope that local residents will share their ideas, and opinions as well.

A further benefit of the internet scheme is that cameras could be added to the system at later dates for just the cost of the camera, approximately £1300, to offer other areas and groups of businesses the peace of mind of this type of monitoring.

The new sighting would mean that the centre would have access to the stunning view across the Hamoaze and could become a sought after venue for private functions and local groups, bringing in much needed funds for the work of the community centre, as well as increased footfall for local businesses.

Organiser Pat King said: “The church proved to be an excellent venue, light, bright and all on one level with the added bonus of parking and buses stopping outside..a massive thank you to all who supported us.” The next event is a Christmas craft fare on November 5. Anyone interested in booking a table can contact Pat King on 01752 240560

Or everyone is welcome to pop down to the Stoke Village Summer fair on Saturday July 2 from 1pm to 7pm in the park to meet STAR members and share their views. There will be a host of activities for all the family from football to belly dancing and art workshops, bouncy castle, nature activities, and live music and a barbecue. The event will be a great opportunity to meet more like minded people who want to make a difference in the community. If you have some spare time and key skills, the group would really like to hear from you and are particularly looking for those with expertise in accountancy, fund raising and the public sector, planning, and landscape and architectural design. The next open meeting is Thursday June 30 at the back of the Stoke Inn, 6.30pm prompt start.

Telephone scam warning

A scam phone call is doing the rounds in Plymouth.
Several calls have been made by people claiming to be from Plymouth City Council and offering compensation for accidents.

The council’s Trading Standards team have received several reports of the bogus calls and are concerned that the scammers may be trying to get personal details from residents. People receiving the calls have described them as being from someone with a strong foreign accent who became aggressive when questioned. Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities said: “These scammers appear to be targeting people with 01752 postcodes and are claiming to be from the city council. They are not, and if people receive one of the calls they should put the phone down, wait five minutes and then contact the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service. If people receive any suspicious call supposedly from Plymouth City Council you can contact our switchboard on 01752 668000 to verify if it is real.” If people receive scam calls they should report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03434 040506.

Celebrations at Crownhill’s popular Nibana restaurant One of Plymouth’s most popular Indian restaurants is celebrating its eighth anniversary. Launched by brothers Shah and Hisbul Hussein in 2008, the Nibana Restaurant at Crownhill Shops in Morshead Road has established a reputation for the finest authentic Indian dishes. Nibana has several meanings including ‘heaven on earth’, ‘enlightenment’ and ‘fulfilment’ and each description could match what is on offer at the restaurant. “We set out to create a contemporary, stylish family-run restaurant offering a completely modern style of Indian cooking,” said Shah. “We have combined this with a warm and relaxing atmosphere and we have been delighted with the success of the restaurant. “We have an excellent team at the Nibana both in the kitchen and front of house. They work really well together,” he added. The brothers, who hail originally from London, have been in Plymouth for 15 years and gained valuable experience running Indian takeaways in the city before taking the plunge and opening their own restaurant. “We live in the Crownhill area and were aware that there are few, if any, places for people to eat in the village,” said Hisbul.

They have worked hard over the years and put a lot of time, effort and energy into the business ensuring it remains up to date with the latest trends in Indian cuisine and style. With plenty of free parking just a few steps away and the restaurant located in a prominent position in the bustling shopping area in the heart of Crownhill, the brothers were confident their venture would prove attractive to customers. “We have a loyal and growing customer base who not only come from the immediate area around Crownhill, but also from right across the whole of Plymouth and as far away as Cornwall,” said Shah.

The restaurant also offers authentic dishes among their chef’s specialities which are not normally available at other restaurants elsewhere in the city. These include Chashni Chicken or Lamb, a dish noted for its flavours, using Kashmiri Massalla, coriander and chillies, onions, peppers, topped with a splash of crispy potatoes. Other favourites are Murug Katta Massala barbecued chicken breast fillets, stuffed with minced lamb with fresh ginger, garlic, green peppers and exotic spices – and Naga Biryani, chicken tikka with chillies and prawns. “All these dishes are extremely popular with our customers,” said Shah. Presentation is one of the keys to the success of Nibana, reflected in the stylish decor of the 65-seat restaurant and on the plate with the colourful and eye-catching way dishes are prepared. Nibana’s quality of food and service has

also been recognised with Trip Advisor Certificates of Excellence and a Qualityfoods Certificate in recognition of its presentation and service. Recognising the fact that customers perhaps have a little less to spend these days, Nibana is offering a Balti Night specials - a choice of eight Balti Indian Style Tapas with six courses on each platter showcasing the best Nibana has to offer, along with traditional starters for just £10.95 per head. Nibana also offers a three course lunchtime special at £9.95, this time with three different set meals to choose from. A takeaway service is also available (collection only) and again the brothers have come up with an anniversary offer for customers. There is a 20 per cent discount on takeaway orders over £15 from Sundays to Thursdays. Nibana has become an established part of not only the Plymouth dining scene but also the local community. Their charitable efforts helped raise £1100 for the Birch Ward Trust Fund and they have also supported the Widey Primary School PTA. Nibana is open lunchtimes from 12.30 to 2.30 (closed Friday and Sunday lunchtime) and evenings from 5.30 to 11.30 seven days a week. It is always advisable to book to avoid disappointment, especially at the weekend. Devonport SOUP event to support Plymouth Art Weekender project Plymouth City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service, Devonport Live and the Real Ideas Organisation have joined forces to support two local artists’ involvement in this year’s Plymouth Art Weekender.

event taking place across the city from September 23 to 25.

The three organisations are holding a ‘SOUP’ event at Devonport Guildhall on the evening of Thursday July 14.

Devonport SOUP is Plymouth’s micro granting dinner, based on a concept that was established in Detroit, USA in 2010. The aim is to bring people together for a simple meal and the chance to determine which projects and ideas in their community or city receive funding.

During the event four artists or artists groups will be invited to pitch their projects to an audience from the local community.

Everyone in the audience will get the chance to vote for their favourite project. The two with the highest number of votes will each receive a small grant of up to £600 so they can run an event during the Art Weekender.

Plymouth Art Weekender is an ambitious three-day

The Weekender will celebrate Plymouth’s visual arts scene and aims to promote the city as an exciting contemporary art destination with exhibitions, activities and commissions by local, national and international artists.

This will be the third SOUP dinner in the city initiated by Devonport Live and the Real Ideas Organisation. Past recipients of the funding include Blue Parakeet and The Real Junk Food Project.

Inspirational young mum Emma Auction planned to raise in battle with cancer funds for her treatment

A young Plymouth mother’s battle against cancer is proving an inspiration not only to her family but also to hundreds of others. Emma Fraser, who is 35, was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2014, only to discover less than a month later that the cancer had spread to her lymph, liver and lungs.

Emma, who lived in the Midlands with her two children at the time, underwent an intensive course of chemotherapy, but was told that she only had three years of life left at best. She suffered ‘hideous’ side effects and decided that three bouts of chemotherapy was all she could take. After the treatment in March last year her mum Sue Fraser gave up her job and flat, also in the Midlands, to move back to Plymouth with Emma so that they had a home together in the city. It meant they could also be nearer Emma’s younger sister Danielle Donnelly, who has a business in Plymouth. Sue threw herself into researching alternative cancer treatments and set up a Facebook page called Dancing with the Big ‘C.’ Based on mum Sue’s research Emma changed her diet dramatically with a strict daily routine of two kilos of freshly juiced organic carrots, no sugar, no dairy products and no processed foods. Her diet also included essiac tea, komboucha, kefir, plenty of probiotics and other natural products. Danielle, who runs the Wedding Hub in Stoke, said: “Emma’s health took on a different direction and just eight months and three scans later the cancer was literally gone. Everything seemed to be going OK. Emma was the healthiest she’d ever been, she spent time enjoying her children, meeting friends and being independent.” While Emma continued to make encouraging progress Sue had set about raising funds to pay for all the additional support and natural products, which were costing hundreds of pounds a month. Then in December last year Emma started to suffer severe headaches and her eyesight was affected. A trip to the optician’s showed her eyesight had actually improved but to be on the safe side she was referred to the Royal Eye Infirmary at Derriford. Concerned that Emma might have contracted meningitis, the specialist at the Royal Eye Infirmary arranged for an emergency MRI in February. Emma and the family then suffered the worst news possible. Emma’s cancer had not returned in her body but it had now spread to her brain and they received the devastating diagnosis that, without further treatment, Emma had no more than eight weeks left. Worse still, the oncologist told them that he believed the chemotherapy she had received in the Midlands was responsible for the cancer migrating to her brain. Despite the prognosis Emma resolutely refused more treatment and continued with her homeopathic diet.

Her condition then deteriorated rapidly and in May Happier times...Emma with her children Thomas and Emily Emma spent time in St Luke’s Hospice, but Emma Below: Emma is comforted by her sister Danielle has proved to be an incredible fighter. She has since returned to her mum’s home in Lipson where she is administered with pain relief on a daily basis. She has so far defied all the predictions in terms of how long she has so far survived. While Emma was in St Luke’s Sue found a homeopathic consultant who believed he could help.

“Like most girls my sister always dreamt of getting married one day and having her own perfect fairytale wedding...when she heard what my friends were doing she said she was happy that at least she was helping someone else’s dream to come true.”

Danielle said: “We never stopped looking for other ways in which to help Emma, something to stop the cancer spreading, to find a cure, anything that may take away the pain. So we ordered the first lot of remedies and began the treatment.” “Everything costs money, especially when it comes to alternative cancer treatments,” said Danielle. So she set about raising more funds to pay for the treatment. She contacted colleagues in her Wedding Creatives group who immediately offered their talents, products

Danielle said: “The Wedding Auction will take place on Friday July 29 and thanks to the amazing generosity of so many people we will not only have a once-in-a-lifetime wedding package on offer, but many other large individual lots to auction and with all the other extras we will have an awesome raffle as well. We just want to do everything we can to support Emma.

and services for free in order to raise money to help Emma continue her treatment.

Danielle also paid tribute to her mum Sue: “Without her Emma wouldn’t still be here. She’s just amazing and I have no idea where she’s found the strength to keep going. Emma obviously takes after her in that respect, thank goodness.”

As a result a fantastic wedding package worth nearly £25,000 will be auctioned at Ocean Studios in the Royal William Yard in July.

Injured ex-Royal Navy sailor, son and dog cycle for charity A mother and son have set off on a tricycle ride from Plymouth Navy Base in aid of two military charities. Tracey Blake and her son Luke - not forgetting their assistance dog Chewbacca (Chewie) in the rear basket are riding a disability trike for 200 miles over two weeks. Their journey began with an official send off from the Royal Navy Police SW HQ at Plymouth’s HMS Drake and an overnight stop at Buckfastleigh. Along the route, they will be at the forefront of a series of fundraising events for SSAFA, the UK’s oldest national military charity and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines’ Children’s Fund.

Tracey and her son Luke - plus Chewie - set off on their fundraising trike challenge

Tracey, who served with the Royal Navy, until an accident damaged her spine whilst on duty, now devotes her time

to volunteering for SSAFA who provide assistance to the armed forces and their dependent families. Her son Luke who’s autistic, is equally determined to complete the ride as he knows that SSAFA is so close to his mother’s heart. Tracey was on exercise in the Italian Alps when she helped to save two Royal Marines who were in danger of tumbling down a cliff. In the process of helping to heave them to safety, she severely damaged her neck and has had neck movement problems and severe headaches ever since. One of those she saved was ‘Pen’ Farthing who hit the headlines when he insisted on bringing home a dog he had looked after whilst serving in Afghanistan. He is supporting Tracey’s journey. Noah’s Ark Childcare Centres celebrate 20 years Noah’s Ark Childcare Centres, the biggest childcare provider in Plymouth, is about to celebrate 20 years since opening in the summer of 1996. Managing director Nyree Squires said the reason she believes they have been such a success is that parents need flexible childcare arrangements that are going to fit in with their busy work schedules and they also want staff that they can trust. “Parents and carers can become very stressed with the pressure of family life and they really need to know that their children are going to be happy with us,” explained Nyree. She felt that the staff she employs are exceptional and really care about each other, the children and their families. “I am so careful who I take on to work for me,” she said. “I can honestly say they are fantastic and so dedicated.” Noah’s Ark’s latest Ofsted inspection report had a great deal of praise for the warmth of the staff and commented on how the children build ‘close relationships with their key person.’ Nyree feels the nurseries balance out well the need for children to play and as well as having the appropriate boundaries and structure in preparation for school and that each of the sites has a wide range of resources for the children to explore. The company are looking forward to a celebration day on July 23 where all the nurseries will be open from 10am to 2pmm for existing and any potential new families. Each site will have a range of fun activities for the children to get involved in and everything will be free. There will also be an opportunity to meet staff on each site and discuss the range of opportunities that Noah’s Ark offer for their children. Each new child starting will receive a free Noah’s Ark t-shirt and any one introducing a friend will be eligible for a gift voucher if the child attends for a minimum of one month. MONEY MA££ERS with TONY JOPSON

Borrowers or lenders So what would you rather be?

WOW: Get Wis£r

with your Wonga The Big Lottery funded ‘improving financial confidence’ project have showcased their varied and effective work with young people.

The WOW team recently held their annual celebration and showcase event, with the focus of ‘reducing the financial exclusion of young people’. Professionals from many different sectors such as housing and youth welfare attended the event to learn more about WOWs successful progress to date in working with young people and communities. This event showcased successes from the last year and sought feedback on ways to strengthen future partnerships between Plymouth landlords and tenants with other services. A real highlight of the day for everyone was the presentation given by a young service user called Chloe who is 22 years old. Chloe reflected on the “life changing impact” that working with WOW had for her. WOW worked in collaboration with Plymouth Community Homes, Plymouth Energy Community, and The Princes Trust to provide Chloe with holistic support. She shared with the audience that she used to be in debt and insecure tenancy, but through working with WOW Chloe learnt new and vital skills and has managed to change her circumstances! She is now in full time work and looking forward to being debt free very soon. Chloe ended her presentation with a passionate call for all young people to be provided with financial education before leaving home, to prevent them from ‘getting into a hole’. Chloe’s story highlights the support the WOW project can give to young people but also how financial confidence and management skills are extremely vital for young people in our city. ‘WOW: Get Wis£r with your Wonga’ is a Plymouth based project for improving financial confidence delivered in partnership by Devon and Cornwall Housing, The Zone, and Citizens Advice Plymouth. They support tenants and residents living in social housing and local communities to improve their financial confidence via 1-2-1 casework (ages 16-24) & Community Group Projects (ages 14+.) 454 young people and community members from across Plymouth took part in the project last year and together they have achieved remarkable things. The 1-2-1 financial casework support based at Devon & Cornwall Housing provided information, advice and assistance to 142 young people, who were struggling with debt and financial troubles. This team draws on the resources of a specialist debt advisor from Citizens Advice Plymouth, who can assist with very complex debt issues. As a result of this support young people started dealing with over £44,000 worth of debts. A staggering amount that has changed lives. 14

By Anna Salisbury of Advice Plymouth The Zone is the base for the Community Projects Team; last year they delivered 29 different community projects, where young people had the chance to develop their budgeting skills and understanding of money management. All projects are service user led which gives the work a unique feel and encourages independent decision making from the young people involved. By engaging with WOW, individuals will be able to: • Improve their knowledge of, and access to, financial services and financial confidence • Gain budgeting experience to prevent getting into future debt • Develop group-work and interpersonal skills to support getting into employment or training • Play and be active, and be a positive role model in their local communities These activities build self-confidence, money management skills, and increase the likelihood of a successful tenancy by empowering clients to make positive and informed financial and personal choices. For more information about WOW and ways to get involved, or to make a referral, visit www.wiserwonga.org.uk

“The borrower is servant to the lender” so says part of a verse from the book of Proverbs in the Bible. We’d all probably rather be lenders – it is common sense that we’d have more freedom if we were lenders; but how can we not be borrowers in today’s society? There’s so much pressure to have things these days, even if we can’t afford them! These often stem from the media, peer groups and friends. I appreciate that there are extreme circumstances where people have little choice but to borrow, but I doubt it applies to many of those reading this. What we need to do is have the self-discipline to analyse whether we really NEED these purchases, other than the fact that “everyone’s doing it” (which they’re probably not by the way). Often the answer is “no”. A key to the freedom of not being a borrower and to even becoming lenders is to be self-controlled about what we borrow and disciplined in repaying debt, even secured debt such as a mortgage, as soon as we possibly can. Some debts are “better” than others – I would say ideally all debt should be avoided if possible but here’s my offering on items we might borrow to obtain, starting with the “best” or “least bad” debts: Mortgage on a house – on the basis that house prices over the medium to long term don’t fall, there will always be an asset of greater value than the debt owed on it. This sort of debt is probably unavoidable if we want to get into the property market. However, I would always seek a mortgage, which allows part repayments at any time without penalty so that the borrower has repayment options at any time Borrowing on a vehicle or piece of equipment necessary for work – we may

have to take on this sort of debt to enable us to earn a living. However, these assets reduce in value over time as they wear out, so even as we repay the debt, we may not be progressing financially as the ratio of asset value to debt remains constant and even possibly negative, depending on the term of the debt and life expectancy of the asset.

Borrowing to further relevant education for a career – this might be in the “speculate to accumulate” category and could include for instance a student loan for university for study to be a doctor or architect i.e. with a specific career path in mind. The theory being that future salary could easily repay the debt incurred in earlier years. The problem with this one is that some pretty hefty debts can be built up over long training periods but a good future career does offer the potential to get on top of these debts in the long run. Going to university because everyone else is but without an ultimately useful degree might not be recommended as a way to avoid unpayable debt! Borrowing for household items i.e. big screen TV, furniture – the value of such items reduce significantly as soon as they are purchased so it is likely we will be repaying the debt (and interest thereon) long after the asset has lost any real value Borrowing to fund consumable assets i.e. food, holidays, clothes, pets, hobbies, children’s toys. These are the debts with the recipe for financial disaster as the value of the item is usually £nil as soon as it is purchased – yet the debt and its attached interest, may remain payable for months, even years! I would suggest we review exactly what we spend our money on and assess whether all items are really needs and not just wants that the media, our neighbours or friends have convinced us are necessary.

Be strong and disciplined and decide as a general rule not to purchase anything (except perhaps a house) until we can pay for it in full. There’s so much more freedom in being a master than a servant! As usual I set out below reminders of organisations you can contact locally for help with debt or money management problems if you have these. Let’s hope you don’t have to use them though. Specialist Mesothelioma nurse appointed cancer and seeing the high concentration of Mesothelioma patients in Plymouth due to the asbestos previously used in the dockyards, I’m thoroughly committed to working on the care and treatment of Mesothelioma patients in Plymouth and surrounding areas.”

Christine Jones has been appointed as a specialist Mesothelioma nurse and will treat asbestos-related cancer patients at Derriford Hospital The appointment has been made thanks to support from Mesothelioma UK, the Charitable Trust for asbestos-related cancer treatment.

Liz Darlison, Mesothelioma UK Director of Services and Consultant Nurse, added: “Mesothelioma is a UK public health disaster and we have so much to do in terms of addressing the many issues related to the disease, not least in prevention.

Christine’s appointment is the 10th addition to Mesothelioma UK’s dedicated team of Clinical Nurse Specialists. Christine will be based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and will focus on Mesothelioma after working in the hospital’s acute oncology and lung cancer departments.

“ I have always found it to be a most rewarding and privileged area of healthcare in which to be practicing. “I would like to welcome Christine to Mesothelioma UK, a passionate and dedicated team that are having quite a remarkable impact across the UK. We are delighted that increased support through fantastic fundraising efforts has enabled Mesothelioma UK to extend its team of dedicated nurses to Devon,” continued Liz Darlison.

In this newly-created, two-day-per-week role, she will have a regional responsibility for supporting, signposting, diagnostics, treatment, problem solving, leading and generally offering clinical support with everything relevant to Mesothelioma. Christine will also focus on promoting the activities of a regional Mesothelioma support group and raising awareness of clinical trials. Currently, within the region, around 60 Mesothelioma patients are diagnosed each year. Christine Jones has worked in Plymouth for three years. Prior to this, Christine managed a hospice, worked for the NHS as a Lung Cancer Certified Registered Nurse (CRN) in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and initially trained in nursing in Aberdeen. Christine Jones’s appointment will be announced on Action Mesothelioma Day (AMD) on July 1. Action Mesothelioma Day is an annual day to raise awareness and pay tribute to all those people suffering with the Mesothelioma cancer. The UK has the world’s highest incidence with more than 2,500 people diagnosed with Mesothelioma each year and this number is increasing. The rising number of patients is directly linked to the UK’s continued import and use of asbestos into the late 1990s. Organised by the South West

THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

Finding ‘something extra’ By Ian Pilkington Chris Cole is taking a few months welldeserved rest from writing his column for the Shopper, so for the next couple of editions, Dave Simpson (our Station Manager) and I will be putting pen to paper - don’t worry, Chris will be back! It was something Chris said to me this morning that got me thinking about this month’s column. As Christians, we believe there are very real benefits from our faith. It’s not just a set of good ideas to live life by. Christians believe there’s a real download of something extra from Heaven, through faith in Jesus Christ, in prayer and relationship with God. This ‘something extra’ we believe to be the living presence of God’s Holy Spirit, who develops our ability to respond to life’s issues way beyond our own capabilities. And the idea is that we share this with everyone around us, bringing benefit to family, friends, and our communities. That’s the plan, anyway. During the last five years presenting the Community Matters programme on Cross Rhythms, I have met and interviewed some remarkable ‘ordinary’ people. Some share my Christian faith, some do not, but they are all releasing whatever talents and gifts they have, through local charities, not-for-profits and social enterprises, in public service and in all kinds of volunteer work. And to be honest, I am mostly amazed that so much ‘good work’ is going on. If this was all taken away, we would truly be in a much poorer state as a city.

communities of which Plymouth is now comprised. We can release the heart of God for our broken humanity, in and through people who claim relationship with him, making real the phrase ‘to love your neighbour’. But that phrase is preceded and followed by two key statements, namely ‘Love the Lord your God,’ and (love your neighbour) ‘as you love yourself’. The first sounds like something he can only ask of those who follow him, granted. And the second, well it can sound ‘selfish’ if taken out of context. But the Christian faith is not about stoically serving others with no help for ourselves. That way lies pride and all manner of problems. On the contrary, Jesus implies that we can only love others as much as we love ourselves. He was, in this, 2,000 years ahead of the self-help therapists who are around today. But he made a crucial distinction – we’re not the focus, we are not the centre of the universe - it all begins with a loving relationship with God. He is love, and we love because he loves us first. If it’s just up to us and our efforts, it looks like a bleak picture. As austerity tightens and fear grows, selfishness and self-protection seem to rise up in response. It’s only love that will cause us to lay our own agendas aside for the sake of others, really. Yet Jesus promises that, while everything around may be trying to kill us, rob our hope and destroy what we value, He has come so that we can have abundant life.

This hope is the ‘something extra’ that should empower Christians to serve their communities well beyond their own abilities. The Christian faith shows us a God who has already defeated and disempowered the source of all the evil in this world, The Faith Action Audit in 2010, and again last year, showed thousands of hours and who now offers us the very love we need to carry out the job of loving those and millions of pounds worth of who differ from us in many volunteer activity being given ways. On your marks, get set. Go! “Having recently installed an electric charge point at the College to support electric vehicles in Plymouth, we hope this inspirational community project will open many young people’s minds to the fascinating world of sustainable engineering and technology”.

A group of budding mechanics from Hyde Park School have teamed up with City College to build their own Goblin kit car. The two competing teams, Whizzing Wasps and The Blue Ladies, each built a kit car and the hope is that they can be used to compete in various events across the country. Building the electric kit cars has introduced these young automotive enthusiasts to basic mechanics.

Young people who are seeking to turn their interest in automotive or mechanics into a career can find out more about the full range of apprenticeship and full-time courses available at City College’s course information drop-in event on Wednesday July 13, 4pm to 6pm, at Kings Road. Please visit cityplym.ac.uk/events or call 01752 305300 for more information.

The kit cars, donated by Vospers Renault, have been constructed as part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Formula Goblin Project which aims to inspire young people aged nine to eleven with engineering subjects in a fun and innovative way. Phil Royale, Renault New Sales Manager, said: “Vospers Renault were delighted to provide Hyde Park School and City College Plymouth with the electric Goblin kit car. As one of the first suppliers in the South West of electric cars, Vospers Renault is at the forefront of electric automotive technology. It is wonderful to see the younger generation getting hands-on experience and showing enthusiasm for the future of this industry. We look forward to watching the project unfold and being a part of this exciting initiative.”

College lecturer, Al Cook, said: “Projects like this are invaluable. They give our students the opportunity to use their practical vocational skills while gaining employability skills. For instance, communication - the College students needed to explain their technical expertise to much younger pupils. They have also used their own initiative when faced with real problems on the project. This all helps to give our students a real head-start in their career. “The Goblin project has also strengthened our community links with

local schools, while hopefully capturing the imagination of young children and inspiring future engineers!” Laura Parry, sustainability Officer, said: “City College is always looking for exciting and inventive ways to embed sustainability into the curriculum. For over ten years the College has been working hard to reduce their impact on the environment, save valuable resources and educate our students on the importance of sustainability and STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Plymouth housebuilder launches forces recruitment campaign Former forces personnel in Plymouth are being given the opportunity to get ahead in a new career as leading housebuilder Barratt Developments launches a recruitment campaign. Following a successful campaign to recruit Ex Forces personnel for its local division in 2015 the company has opened applications for its brand-new Trainee Assistant Site Manager Programme for the Forces Community, which has been specially designed for former forces personnel. Starting in September 2016 the programme will support ex- servicemen and women by providing an extensive 12-month training programme which will kick-start their career in construction. The programme will involve on-the-job training and study through the Barratt Training Academy, Paul Moran, managing director of preparing them for Barratt Homes in Plymouth the role of assistant site manager. Paul Moran, managing director of Barratt Homes in Plymouth, says the skills developed by members of the armed forces make them perfect for management roles in the thriving construction industry. “We find former armed service personnel have strong leadership and management skills, as well as an ability to think outside the box, work under pressure and maintain the very highest of standards. They’re all the attributes that make a top site or project manager,” he said. “This isn’t just a short-term opportunity either. We really do see our site managers and project managers of the future on this programme and there will be plenty of opportunities for those who are passionate and ambitious to have a very successful career with Barratt.” Barratt Developments has long been a supporter of the UK’s current and former service personnel. A number of employees who took part in one of the first Trainee Assistant Site Manager programmes, which was launched in 2015, are now progressing in their careers and studying on the Barratt Foundation Degree Programme, a bespoke programme which is run in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. Paul concluded: “We’re truly committed to supporting all armed forces personnel and the transition into civilian life. They bring unique skills and experience to our business and work to extremely high standards that are in line with our values.” Prospective candidates can find out more about the programme and apply online at www.barrattcareers.co.uk. Applications close on July 31.

National Sports Week celebrated at College Road Primary School College Road Primary School in Keyham celebrated National Sports week by helping introduce the children to a variety of sports and teach them how to stay fit and healthy.

The children were0 given the opportunity to participate in various sporting workshops with external coaches throughout the week. The week was kicked off by Royal Navy Physical Trainer Petty Officer Peplow from HMS Drake who started the morning with a whole school Royal Naval style wake and shake which taught the children discipline and integrity. PO Peplow also spent the morning undertaking fitness sessions for each year group which included fun activities where they were required to work as part of team and learnt the military core values. Amy from Year 4 said: “We learnt that exercise is very important for us and it can be varied, to make it different.

Petty Officer Peplow with some of the youngsters from College Road Primary School

Year 5 and Year 6 were put into teams and given a series of circuits to complete, along with being taught how to do a press up, plank, burpies and squats.

PO Peplow said: “All the pupils seemed to enjoy themselves, this is such a welcoming school with very pro-active staff that all joined in. I would be more than happy to return to teach the children about military fitness and standards. College Road Primary School deputy headteacher Mrs Francis-Mcleod said: “The children threw themselves into the fitness activities with great enthusiasm and gained new skills as well as a taste of military discipline! Most importantly they learnt that fitness should be fun. PO Peplow explained the importance of trust and honesty which should be used in sporting activities. “ Sessions during the week included Plymouth Raiders, Plymouth Argyle, golf and tennis as well as a visit from the bikeability smoothie bike where the children were given tips on how to eat healthily.

First phase of new Oceansgate development unveiled The first set of buildings to be designed for the city’s Oceansgate have been submitted to planners. A front building of offices and two rows of industrial units are planned for the entrance to the site, which is destined to become a world class hub for marine industries. The two and three-storey buildings have been designed to offer flexible office and workshop space and have been arranged in parallel to reflect the historic nature of South Yard as well as the street pattern just outside its boundaries.. The proposals are being submitted by Midas Construction, who were awarded a contract by the city council to progress the design of the facilities to the planning application stage and to then build the first phase. They worked alongside Plymouth-based architects Form Design Group to design the buildings, who recently completed the award-winning Genesis Building on Union Street. The proposals have taken into acount advice received in the pre-application stage from bodies such as Historic England who have been keen to see a design that reflects the historic nature of the site and follows the quality of the Plymouth Limestone buildings that exist on the site. Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “This is exciting stuff. There’s been an incredible amount of negotiations to get to this stage and it’s great to see these proposals submitted for the Planning Committee. “If they get the green light, these buildings will see the first of a new wave of businesses move in, employing skilled people and help strengthen the city’s reputation as the place for marine-related industry.

“Oceansgate is the first exclusively marine Enterprise Zone in the country, potentially offering significant tax and capital allowance incentives for businesses locating here. We expect significant interest from marine companies looking to move to Oceansgate.” The buildings are intended to be easily adaptable so they can include office, design suites, testing labs and training rooms for technology development and prototypes production spaces. Building 1 is office accommodation arranged over three floors covering an area of 1710sq m. The ground, first and second floors have four work spaces with shared toilet and shower facilities. A plant room is located at roof level, partially hidden in the roof void. The ground floor is specially designed to be adaptable for laboratories if businesses need testing facilities. Building 2 and 3 are more industrial in nature with internal area of 662m2 and capacity to take a mezzanine floor . The buildings can be let as one unit or up to seven individual units depending on business demand. Each unit has large six metre high roller shutter doors to make the units adaptable if businesses need to work on large equipment or plant. The application includes 32 parking spaces for the office block and 28 spaces for the area around the industrial units. The plan allows for flexibility in car parking, loading bays and vehicle entrances for the industrial unit as some of these arrangements will depend on tenant onsite management. Landscaping is also planned, including moving a listed historic capstan which used to haul the ships into the docks to a prominent location at the front of the site to reflect the site’s maritime heritage. The cost of this first phase of buildings is £7.8 million and the council is seeking to confirm promised investment

and manufacturing and potentially laboratory space for research.

Andy McAdam, Divisional Director for Midas Construction in Devon and Cornwall, said: “We wanted to create a gateway which respects the industrial heritage of South Yard and sets a benchmark for the future developments within the production campus.”

The site will have up to 25,000 m2 of flexible employment space with deep water docks and jetties suitable for the marine and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Oceansgate is a 7.46 hectare site and under the City Deal will become a hub for marine companies, providing workshops, offices and laboratory space for engineering,

Jones Lang Lasalle were appointed to market the site at Devonport which has already attracted over 100 expressions of interest from marine businesses wanting to relocate there.

New base for family Another walking and cycling link for Eastern Corridor support group A group which helps families with children who have additional needs has found a new base for its activities. Family Additional Need Support (F.A.N.S.) is now running coffee mornings at a community centre in Frederick Street and will also be organising family activities at the weekends in the future. The not-for-profit organisation was originally launched two years by Kerry Mcmanus who has a teenage son with additional needs. “Many families have to fight for a diagnosis of a child’s additional needs and it can often be difficult to secure the extra support that is so often needed in these cases.” Kerry started the group under the title of ‘Making a Difference’ in 2014

so that families could be supported, given advice and signposted to the relevant services. Kerry has established a closed group on Facebook which now has over 1,000 members. “We have a couple of hundred members in the Plymouth area, but the rest are literally from all over the world. “The more families we can reach the more we can hopefully support through both the OK times and the very not so good.” Kerry said that donations towards the work of F.A.N.S. was always welcome. The group ran a charity shop in Wilton Street for a time, but now relies purely on donations. The work of F.A.N.S. has been recognised with a Pride of Plymouth Award and Affinity Sutton Award.

Plans for a walking and cycling route connecting Laira Rail Bridge and the new Saltram Meadow housing estate have been submitted by Plymouth City Council.

The link will provide pedestrians and cyclists with a traffic-free alternative to this stretch of Laira Bridge Road and Billacombe Road and therefore help to reduce congestion along the A379. Around 570 pedestrians and cyclists already use the popular new Laira Rail Bridge and this new route is expected to boost numbers even further. People will be able to access the link via Saltram Meadow and the new pedestrian and cycle crossing currently being built on Billacombe Road, near Broxton Drive.

Future plans include a more direct link into Broxton Drive, by extending the route further along the railway alignment. The proposals form part of a wider programme of walking and cycling improvements across the city that have helped to achieve a 50 per cent increase in cycling in the past six years. The planning application can be viewed online at www.plymouth.gov. uk/planningonline – the reference is 16/01089/FUL. If the planning application is approved it is hoped work will begin later this year, with the new route opening next spring. It will be fully funded through the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Transport Board and Section 106 contributions. The Plymouth Shopper

Children’s Hospice South West is celebrating its 25th anniversary by celebrating the many aspects of the charity’s work. In this issue the focus is on senior fundraiser Sarah and her work in supporting members of the local community who raise funds for the charity

From cakes to county shows - all in a day’s fundraising for Sarah

Sarah Stott has been working for Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Harbour in Porthpean, St Austell since March 2009, helping to raise much needed funds to support children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. From cake sales to county shows, Sarah has dedicated her career at CHSW to spreading word of the charity and supporting the community. Sarah was introduced to CHSW when she heard a bereaved dad sharing his story when attending a networking event. She said: “I was so touched and inspired by him I just knew I had to work for CHSW, and was delighted to join the team as an administrator and receptionist in 2009.” Sarah has held various roles at CHSW including being the events fundraiser, taking on the corporate partnerships fundraiser role as maternity cover and now working as the senior fundraiser at Little Harbour.

“Being a Community Fundraiser is great as you get to meet lots of lovely people who are passionate about fundraising for us,” she said. “I enjoy supporting them in what they are doing and always invite them to visit our beautiful hospices on our open days as this gives them the chance to see for themselves what they are supporting.” Sarah has a passion for CHSW and gains huge job satisfaction from her role, for which she credits the team she works with as well as the fantastic support they get from the wider community. “We couldn’t be there for the children and their families who need us most if it wasn’t for the support and involvement of local communities,” she said. “It’s humbling to meet people who want to do something to help others. We have incredible communities in Plymouth and Cornwall and this is something we should all be very proud of.”

Little Harbour is delighted to welcome Zoe Partridge to the Fundraising Team in July. She will be the key community contact for North East and South East Cornwall, Plymouth and the surrounding area. This will give Sarah the opportunity to focus on the support in mid-Cornwall as well as managing the Adminstration and Fundraising Team at Little Harbour. Sarah looks forward positively to the next 25 years of CHSW, envisaging the charity developing and responding “ Have I not commanded you? Be further to the needs of families. She said: “It’s wonderful strong and courageous. Do not be to be able to tell people about this very special year and afraid; do not be discouraged, for how far we have come in 25 years.”

“Over the past seven years, I have seen the organisation grow a lot; it’s fantastic that the opening of Little Harbour made Eddie and Jill’s vision of having a children’s hospice within a 90 minute reach for families across the South West a reality. We now have to raise nearly £10m a year, which is a lot more than when I first started.”

Sarah’s recent role of Community Fundraiser has seen her getting involved in a wide range of activities, from supporting individuals in their fundraising to giving talks in schools, and for many, following this up with tours of Little Harbour.

The winner of the Beacon Blinds competition in our May edition is Angela Milden of Keyham who wins blinds worth £500.

Plymouth divers to fly the flag for Britain at Rio

Plymouth divers Tonia Couch, Sarah Barrow and Dan Goodfellow will be heading to Rio this summer.

They’ve all been selected to represent Great Britain at the Games, alongside former Plymouth Diving team-mate and Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley. Tom and Dan will be teaming up again for the men’s 10-metre synchro event, after winning gold at the British Diving Championships in Sheffield last week and silver at the European Diving Championships in May. Sarah, who also won gold at the British Diving

Championships despite a difficult year beset with injury problems will be competing in the women’s 10-metre platform and Tonia will partner Leeds diver Lois Toulson in the women’s 10-metre synchro as well as diving in the individual event, in what will be her third Olympics.
Lois showed huge promise throughout 2015, becoming European Games Champion and winning medals on the senior Grand Prix circuit before pairing up with Tonia at the World Series where they were often on the rostrum among some of the top teams in the world. Dan, Sarah and Tonia train at the Plymouth Life Centre, one of only three high performance diving centres in the country,

under the expert guidance of world-class coach Andy Banks and Marc Holdsworth, who moved to Plymouth with Dan three years ago to benefit from the programme and facilities on offer in the city. Andy said: “The four-way backing I have had since March 2015 from Plymouth City Council, Everyone Active, Marjon University and Plymouth College has enabled me to stay in Plymouth and continue working with the top divers towards the Rio Olympics. This support has resulted in Tonia, Sarah and Dan being selected to a very strong GB diving team for this summer’s Games and I am very grateful for their ongoing help, which

is allowing these talented divers to fulfil their dreams. “The divers all work really hard in Plymouth’s world-class facilities, along with our coaching support team of physios, strength and conditioning, psychology, nutrition and lifestyle – and it is this whole dream team that have helped towards these selections. Bring on Rio!” Seven younger divers based at the Plymouth Life Centre will be leaving for Croatia later this month to compete in the European Junior Diving Championships. These include Matthew Dixon, Victoria Vincent, Kayleigh Sinclair and Shanice Lobb.

Delivery success creates job opportunities in Stoke, Keyham, Crownhill and Compton

The Shopper is published by local Plymouth company Cornerstone Vision, a family owned and run business based in Peverell, which has attracted a lot of new orders from businesses

because of its consistent delivery of results for advertisers and leaflet distribution customers. This has led to the need to recruit more part time self-employed delivery people. Over 90 distributors and back-checkers already carry out these deliveries every month in Plymouth, and Cornerstone Vision’s distribution manager Tony Hodges is looking to recruit local people to carry out the deliveries to their own neighbourhoods. “Local people care about their communities and neighbours,” said Tony, “so they have a vested interest in making sure the deliveries are reliable and on time. This all adds to the integrity and trustworthiness of our service.”

Distributors get seven working days to deliver a round; a trolley or bag supplied if required; a regular monthly round plus the offer of extra leaflet delivery work if they are available; payment at the end of the month.

leaflets for a few hours a day. He’s lost weight, his knees (once a cause for concern) are significantly better, and he has remarked how he feels useful and valued again.

The job suits all age ranges (not children please), male, female, fit or looking-to-getfit – the main requirements are honesty, reliability and cheerfulness when you meet the occasional householder.

“The Plymouth Shopper has become a firm favourite with readers,” said Shopper Editor, Chris Girdler, “we’re always happy to receive local community interest stories from people. Distributors who live locally

It involves collating Shoppers, Plymouth Magazines and leaflets together; walking up steps and down steps, in all weathers, delivering to every house in every street on a supplied round-map – you can take as long as you like and deliver whenever you like in a 7 day period (within reason – people don’t like deliveries at unsocial hours!), and receive payment for the round after it has been checked. Plymouth Shopper Distributors come from all walks of life, here’s a few examples: A young man, in his early 20’s, enjoying a nocturnal ‘computer games’ lifestyle – rising at 2pm onwards, not really attempting to find work. He took on several rounds, (after prompting from his Grandfather), came off allowances, and began to earn and got fitter. His ‘shoulders went back’, his self-esteem rose and he is now full time employed. A Backchecker, who may well knock on your door to verify our Plymouth Magazine or Shopper delivery, is a retired insurance man - well used to doorstep etiquette. He enjoys walking, meeting new people and earns while he burns (calories!) A retiree who was looking for some top up income to his pension has been delivering

make it even more of a locally-owned publication, which is what it’s all about.” If you would like to find out more about the job, call Tony Hodges on 01752 225623, or email tony@ cornerstonevision.com. If you have a local interest story, contact our Editor, Chris Girdler at info@ cornerstonevision.com.

Royal Navy museum submarine re-launched

The UK’s only nuclear-powered museum submarine has a bright new future after a ceremonial relaunch in Plymouth Naval Base.

and the Devonport Naval Base Heritage Centre, gave the collection new potential.

Former head of the Royal Navy Admiral Sir Jonathon Band (retired) cut the ribbon to the face-lifted Cold War submarine yesterday (Tuesday) to herald the next milestone in its thriving career as a tourist attraction and a newly-announced part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s (NMRN) heritage collection.

He said: “I am now able to announce a much closer link between the Devonport Heritage Collection, including Courageous, and the National Museum In Portsmouth. This has been developed to ensure that such an important collection can be properly exploited and developed and better opened to a wider local, national and international audience with access to new streams of funding and professional support.

As Head of the Trustees of the NMRN, Admiral Band announced to 100 guests at Devonport Naval Base that a new memorandum of understanding between the Devonport Naval Heritage Collection (of which the decommissioned submarine is part) and the Portsmouthbased NMRN had been signed. This, and the relationship between Plymouth City Council Museums

“It heralds an exciting future and helps to make a reality of our contribution to the new City of Plymouth flagship History and Arts Centre. The signing of the memorandum of understanding will help ensure the Devonport Naval Base heritage continues to find its rightful place on the agenda and continues to play an increasingly important part in all that Plymouth can offer.’’ Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, said: “We are delighted to be forging closer relations with Plymouth. Both of our cities are synonymous with the Navy. We look forward to working with this hugely important heritage collection which will remain in Plymouth. We will help the heritage centre and its volunteers to attract more visitors. Our formal affiliation with Courageous is the first step.” Courageous has been open 14 years and attracted 300,000 visitors having been transformed

The main driving force behind this unusual attraction is former Courageous serving sailor Michael Pitkeathly. His achievement was marked by a new submarine museum building next to Courageous being named after him and unveiled as the submarine was opened. Tours of Courageous can be booked by calling 01752 552 326.
