“By 2018, a new airline will provide daily services to a range of destinations including London,” he said.

The team behind plans to re-open Plymouth’s airport has raised more than £5,000 in the first week of its new fundraising drive.

Both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports have recently expressed interest in supporting the reopening of Plymouth airport.

The airport was closed in December 2011 after Plymouth airport leaseholder Sutton Harbour Holdings revealed its talks with Plymouth City Council could not present the company with any viable solution. The campaign group Viable is now working on reopening the airport through a new social enterprise called FlyPlymouth. FlyPlymouth chief executive officer Raoul Witherall told a packed meeting at the University of St Mark & St John on May 8: “It is time now for Plymouth to focus on reopening its airport and connecting with the world. “For this we need a new vehicle, one that can deliver on reopening the airport, creating a new airline and partnering together with Plymouth to achieve this. FlyPlymouth is that vehicle. “Viable set out in 2011 to carry the flag for those who wished to see Plymouth rethink its approach to air connectivity. The objective was to save Plymouth airport from redevelopment and now that objective has been largely achieved with the airport’s protection in the Plymouth Plan.” The group has launched a Crowdfunder campaign to raise £150,000 in two years. It needs £10,000 initially to

start the project - and reached half that total in little more than a week. Raoul added: “FlyPlymouth is a locally-based social enterprise focused on providing aviation services. Being constituted as a company limited by guarantee means that profits will be recycled into the business rather than being extracted by private shareholders. “We are seeking a short lease rather than securing freehold interests which have the potential to destabilise the business. These factors will contribute to a sustainable solution that is right for Plymouth airport.” Asked why FlyPlymouth would succeed where others had given up, Richard Crocker, FlyPlymouth’s chief operating officer explained: “Rather than going for another low cost volume model, our plans for the airport and airline are adapted to the facilities that exist and needs of the proven passenger market. We have a stepped plan that is designed to be profitable at each stage”

FlyPlymouth will raise £150,000 seed money over the coming months to deliver essential pre-revenue work. Funded largely out of business and private contributions, this will enable vital preparation such as detailed business planning, due diligence and legal support required to reopen the airport. The airport and airline business plans themselves are to be financed through a separate multi-million pound package accessed at a later stage once the business has secured a lease. FlyPlymouth’s plan would create 240 jobs and generate extra economic growth of between £13m and £26m million to the local economy. It will also stimulate further economic benefits to Plymouth and the wider South West through inward investment. Raoul said that since Plymouth lost its connections to Heathrow 14 international companies had ceased operating in Plymouth because the management of those companies found it difficult to communicate with the operations in Plymouth. Navy submariners back awareness of health research Plymouth submariners have supported a special awareness day promoting health research across the South West. It was a Royal Navy officer who conducted the first ever clinical trial – an achievement commemorated on International Clinical Trials Day in May to promote the significant benefits of health research. In May 1747 James Lind investigated the cause and treatment of the Vitamin

C deficiency called Scurvy, which was prevalent among sailors at that time.

Commanding Officer of HMS Talent, Commander Craig Ballantyne said: “We were delighted to support International Clinical Trials Day by way of acknowledging the pioneering work of the Royal Naval officer who conducted the first clinical trial to improve the health of sailors. “Achieving better understanding and treatment of health conditions brings universal benefits.”

Students raise £500 for Jeremiah’s Journey City College Plymouth students have raised more than £500 at a charity quiz night in aid of the college’s nominated charity, Jeremiah’s Journey. The students who organised the dinner and quiz are studying health and social care at the college. They raised over £440 from the sale of event tickets and a raffle, as well as a further £62 from collection tins and selling Jeremiah’s Journey merchandise. Student, Francesca Ball, 19, said: “We’re delighted with the amount we raised at

our quiz night. Our team worked really hard to organise everything, so it is great that people were so generous and had a good evening. These kind of enterprising projects are encouraged at the college and I really enjoyed the process of managing and promoting the event. I’m really grateful to everyone who made the night a success and hope our contribution can help support the good work done by Jeremiah’s Journey.”

Jeremiah’s Journey works with children, young people and their families in and around the city to support them in times of bereavement.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Officers in the Wardroom of Trafalgar class submarine HMS Talent alongside at Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth (from left): Lt Cdr Dave Burrell, Lt Jack Herbert, Lt Paul Tustain and Lt Matthew Berridge From Lind’s trial of different treatments for 12 sailors with symptoms of Scurvy on board a Plymouth-based ship HMS Salisbury in the English Channel, he reported that ‘the most sudden and visible good effects were perceived from the use of oranges and lemons in the treatment.’ Two hundred and sixty eight years later, healthcare professionals across the NHS in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset celebrated International Clinical Trials Day with information stands and activities in hospitals and the communities they serve to raise awareness about the importance of health research and how people can participate. The dedicated clinical research centre at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth is named after Lind in recognition of his pioneering work. Clinical director of the Clinical Research Network South West Peninsula, Professor Anthony Woolf said: “Clinical trials are a vital element of providing high quality research evidence to inform decisions taken by health professionals, policy makers and patients about treatments. As part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), we are the lead NHS

organisation for supporting clinical trials to provide this high quality research evidence. “The enduring element since Lind conducted the first clinical trial through to this present day is someone asking a question in the hope that better understanding can improve the quality of life for patients and offer hope for future generations. We also depend on the public and patients supporting clinical trials to improve the treatment options that we have.” The NIHR has launched its 2015 ‘Ok to ask’ campaign which aims to encourage more patients and carers to ask about research opportunities they or their families may be able to get involved with. In an NIHR CRN survey published earlier this year 95% of people said it was important to them that the NHS carries out clinical research but less than 21% said they felt confident about asking their doctor about research opportunities. The campaign also serves to remind healthcare professionals including consultants, doctors, GPs, nurses and midwives to be research aware and active.

Congratulations to the winners of the Samphire Bush competition which appeared in the March edition of the Shopper. The five winners were Mrs Giles from Stoke, Mrs Mather from Mutley, Rachel Tarrant from Plymstock, Karen Turton from Widey View and Mrs Gill from Masefield Gardens.

Community café Learning support students from City College Plymouth are running a community café every Thursday in term time at Stoke Damerel Church on Paradise Road. Serving tea, coffee and cakes baked and prepared by the students, the café follows on from a successful lunch club which students have previously run at the college. The experience of running the café gives those students with special needs and learning difficulties the experience of a realistic work environment. The students work in shifts, splitting their time between the college, preparing the food, and serving people in the café. Carrying out multiple roles helps them to develop key employability and work skills as well as boosting their confidence. Claire Smart, tutor at the college said: “We think it’s important for our students to get out in the community and be visible. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show what they can do and get hands-on work experience which will help them when they look for work in the future.” Rhona Prichard, churchwarden at Stoke Damerel Church, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the College students into the church to run the community café. We are keen to open up our space as a community hub within Stoke”. The community café is open from 10.30am to 2pm and will continue to run every Thursday in term time. 8

Centenary concert to remember the sacrifice of Canadian troops A leading group of choristers from Canada will be taking part in a 100th anniversary tribute in Plymouth to the thousands of their countrymen who served in the First World War. The North Lakeside Chorus, with singers from Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia will join with Plymouth Phoenix Chorale in the concert at St Andrew’s Church on June 30. The visit to Plymouth is part of a two week tour of the UK and Europe by the Canadian chorus. They will also be performing in Exeter, Honiton, London and locations in France and Belgium. The concert, entitled ‘Till the Boys Come Home’ is the vision of producer Michael Korn from Toronto and is a tribute to the men of the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. It features choral music from contemporary composers to familiar songs from 1914 including Keep the Home Fires Burning, It’s a long, long way to Tipperary and Pack up your Troubles. A Remembrance section will feature the playing of The Last Post and Piper’s Lament, as well as Song for the Unsung Hero. The Plymouth Phoenix Chorale will perform Londonderry Air, Greensleeves and Home Sweet Home. The audience will be invited to join in with a selection of well known tunes from the era. A donation will be made to the Royal British Legion. In October 1914, much to the surprise of local inhabitants, 33,000 Canadian soldiers in 33 naval ships sailed into Plymouth, a fleet that stretched over 18 miles from the entrance to the Sound as far as the Eddystone. The fear of a German U-boat attack prompted their landing rather than at the intended destination of Southampton. For those with family, or next of kin in Plymouth, this would have been an unexpected homecoming. Some of the names were: William James Grant, Harry Smith, and surnames Bunt, Haynes, Hussey, Small, Tozer, Underwood and White. This First Contingent, of whom 70 per cent were British emigrants, took nine days to disembark and board trains bound for Wiltshire and the further training that followed on Salisbury Plain. By February 1915 the troops were considered battle ready and sailed for France. In April, Canadian forces were subjected to the first use of gas in the Ypres salient, and although their losses were staggering, they managed to hold the line. In Flander’s Fields, the Life Centre, on Thursdays 8 - 9.45pm. During the summer we dance out on Thursday evenings at various pubs and other venues in and around Plymouth. A newspaper cutting wrote about the twelve hundred officers and men from the Edmonton section who with their band marched through the streets of Devonport, lined with crowds of onlookers, to the Hoe, where their Chaplain Captain Rev Mr Bruce conducted the regular military service under the shadow of the Armada Monument. Seated on the grass the troops, surrounded by a great throng of Plymouth people joined in heartily in the singing of hymns. Makeover for play park thanks to hotel bosses

A popular Plymouth play park has been given a muchneeded facelift thanks to the bosses of the Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

“I used to take my two sons there most evenings when my wife Sylvia was working and now I enjoy taking my four grandchildren there - they love the park just as much.”

The concrete train and ship at West Hoe play park have been enjoyed by tens of thousands of children for more than 50 years - but had recently fallen into disrepair.

Walter and fellow director Jon Morcom decided they would step in and refurbish the much-loved play equipment - and they have undertaken to do the same every year if needed.

Duke of Cornwall managing director Walter Combstock said: “We heard that the City Council faced a bill of £1600 to repair the train and ship - and we decided to step in.

The Duke of Cornwall’s maintenance team of Bill Dyer and Al Hutchings carried out the work, giving the train and ship a brilliant overhaul.

“West Hoe park has played a big part in my life,” said Walter, who has worked at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel for more than 50 years.

Walter said: “The Duke of Cornwall Hotel has been at the heart of the city’s community for more than 150 years and we are always

keen to support community activities and organisations. “West Hoe park is such a valuable asset for the local community - including our own staff and their families. It gives me a real buzz to drive past the park and see the train and ship looking so good.” Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Brian Vincent said: “This is a lovely gesture and we are delighted that the Duke of Cornwall was able to help us out in this way. “It has been a while since the play features were painted and they were definitely looking rather tired. We look forward to seeing lots of children enjoy playing on them, in them and letting their imagination run wild.”

Mobile PC Doctor on the case In this day and age of online call centres, where you rarely get to speak to the same person twice, it is really nice to know that personal service is still being delivered. Paul Haynes has been providing a repair service for domestic and small business customers who use Windows based computers since 2004. He retrained in the late 1990’s sparked by his interest in computers and studied for five years in total. However, whilst many of his classmates went on to other jobs, Paul saw a niche in the market for a good quality computer repair service for local consumers, and started his own business Mobile PC Doctor in 2004 with the support of his wife and children. Although his smart logo, and the signage on his vehicles give the impression of a top national business, Paul is in fact a sole trader, preferring to answer his customers needs personally to ensure he can guarantee good service with satisfied customers. His commitment to remaining small runs parallel with his desire to look after the needs of ordinary customers - no job is too small, and he endeavours to respond as quickly as possible, as he serves Plymouth and surrounding areas. On the independent business review site, www.freeindex.co.uk where businesses reviewed have no control over what is said, because of the high ratings of positive reviews he has received, Paul is 17th out of 6414 (correct at time of print) in the country who are also competing for reviews. Paul believes this is down to the fact that he is fair, honest and reliable. “Most jobs are completed fast on site without the need to take the computer away” explained Paul, “and as I am able to repair on site saving the customer time, hassle and money they get oneto-one support as well. I demonstrate the problems found and explain in plain English what is needed and how to improve their computer’s performance. I also clean and service every computer I work on when needed, so the computer ends up running better, faster and more reliable in addition to the original fault I was called out to fix”.

understand that a car needs an annual service, but it is the same with computers which is often hampered by updates and changes, sluggish software, malware and adware. (That’s what is responsible for all those unwanted adverts that keep popping up!). It’s important to clean the system to keep it running at its optimum speed and avoid those pesky crashes and computer lag that always come at the most inconvenient times. Often subscription security software is to blame for a lot of sluggish computer behaviour, of which Paul offers free security software which he uses personally which has proven to yield better results. “So although I am generally called out in a crises, most times I not only fix the problem, but also service the computer, which makes for very happy customers and it extends the life of most computers. We live in a very disposable world now but too often a service has extended the computers life where otherwise the customer would have bought a new computer instead.” Paul can book his customers for annual services if they wish, which starts from just £40 with no hidden charges, it’s definitely less expensive than costly insurance, less hassle and quicker than taking to a shop, more reliable than remote support and more personal than dealing with big companies who often use call centres. For jobs Paul doesn’t do he’s happy to recommend other local businesses where he can. The other huge benefit is that Paul offers independent computer buyers advise to steer people away from buying a sluggish computer or laptop they may live to regret. Paul also sells a range of new custom made desktop computers running Windows 7 for those who don’t like Windows 8 yet. Paul can also supply new Windows 7 laptops which is a rare find these days. Paul will also setup any computer whether bought from him or not, all of which are tweaked for best

Paul added: “Most people would

performance and made secure, even new ones out of the box. Whilst Macs have become popular, Windows based PC’s still hold their own against the Mac for versatility, serviceability and price. Many of Paul’s customers need the benefits of a friendly face demonstrating to them how to get the best of their technology. Often their computer is a great source of communicating with the outside world, whether that’s Skype calls to relatives far away, catching up with old friends on face book or email, or being able to buy what you need without having to leave home – for many people a computer or laptop is a real lifeline, which is why when it suddenly and inexplicably refuses to work, can be a real headache. Paul really enjoys his conversations with

his customers and has a gift of being able to explain in layman’s language what needs to be done, where the fault is likely to be or what computer to buy or avoid in the future – all of which helps customers grow in their own confidence to use all that modern technology has to offer. So if you, or someone in your care, needs a helping hand to work through any computer related headache, there is a local solution in the form of a real person that is so much less frustrating than talking to a computer! As one of his reviewers says, “You cannot beat that face to face contact.” Paul can be contacted on 01752 211282 or emailsales@mpcd.biz, or click on his website www.mobilepcdoctor.biz where you can view all his reviews including those on FreeIndex.

Anna: ‘I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved’ With over 25 years’ social care experience, Anna was looking for a more flexible way to make a living. Now she lives and works at home in Plymouth as a carer for Janet with Shared Lives South West. Janet’s learning disability and mental health problems mean she needs somewhere safe to live with some care and support built in: her life has been complicated and unsettled and she needs consistency and stability. Anna said: “Because I’m around all the time I can give Janet the support she needs when she needs it. We do things together: if the weather’s nice we’ll go out and enjoy it – but there’s no fixed schedule, we choose what we want to do and when we want to do it.” Janet has lived with Anna for more than two years. Since moving in, she’s settled, has a sense of belonging and is more able to speak up about things which are important to her. More recently, Sarah has moved in too – a very welcome addition to the household. Although it’s not always easy, Anna said: I”m really proud of what we’ve achieved. I can be creative and flexible, making use of all of my skills. I feel really privileged to be able to do this as a job: in a family environment I can give of myself: there are no limits.” Anna’s not on her own though: the Shared Lives team are there to help everything run smoothly, and Laura from Shared Lives has worked with Anna since she applied to the scheme. “The fact that Laura knows me so well makes a big difference. She’s a listening ear and a safety net – she knows the system inside out. Because I’m dyslexic I find paperwork horrific! But all the staff are approachable and easy to talk to, they’ve given me lots of help.” Anna would recommend Shared Lives because “You get lots of choice – you can offer short-term or long-term arrangements and you have control over who comes in. “It is a two-way process though, so you need to be to be open-minded and able to adapt. It’s a lifestyle, not a job. It’s hard work but it’s really fun.” For more information about Shared Lives South West Call 01626 360170 or visit www.sharedlivessw.org.uk

Chorale’s Picnic Proms concert

Plymouth Phoenix Chorale is joining forces with the Kelliwik Orchestra for a Picnic Proms concert at Plymouth Guildhall on June 20. The Proms event ‘Land meets Sea’ will feature classic Last Night of the Proms favourites and the audience are being encouraged to take their own picnic and drinks and join in the flag waving and singing of Rule Britannia. The summer concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will also feature a new arrangement of the famous ‘Fantasia on British Sea Songs’ by Henry Wood. Written in 1905 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the completed work is made up of nine parts which follow the course of the battle from the point of view of a British sailor, starting with the call to Arms, progressing through to the death of a comrade, thoughts of home, and ending with a victorious return and the assertion that Britain will continue to ‘rule the waves.’ The Phoenix Chorale is performing this newly released choral version by Peter Lawson which starts with a series of six naval bugle calls and their responses. The programme will also feature music on a theme from an English Country Garden, conjuring up images of long summer days amid tranquil gardens of fragrant roses, and butterflies and bees. The Bluebird by Charles Villiers Stanford, Greensleeves by Vaughan Williams, We’ll Gather Lilacs by Ivor Novello, The Silver Swan by Orlando Gibbons, As Torrents in Summer by Elgar, as well as music by Bob Chilcott, John Rutter, Camille SaintSaens and Mack Wilberg. Wildlife Walk at Ford Park Cemetery

Events at Ford Park Cemetery in June include a Summer Wildlife Walk on Saturday June 6, led by chairman John Boon.

It’s sew far, sew good for Tina’s tailoring business at its new Stoke location Sewing is a success for local seamstress Tina Saunders as she opens her new shop, Tina’s Tailoring and Bridal Wear in Stoke Village, writes Naomi Girdler. With over 19 years’ experience in a top bridal boutique in Plymouth, Tina and her fellow seamstress Karen Griffiths offer a range of services from dressmaking to tailoring, from bridal alterations to medal mounting. Mother of two, Tina explained: “We’re a bridal, groom and tailoring shop, but we also do prom dresses, jewellery, suit hire and sell ex-display reduced price designer dresses. What makes us unique is that we offer free alterations, which isn’t something you see often these days. “We’ve got a great line of wedding dresses in stock by Phoenix Gowns with more to come as well as payment plan options for those planning ahead for the big day.” Tina’s love of sewing began during a stint of unemployment where she picked up some patterns to pass the time. It soon became clear that it was more than just a past-time. “When I was at school, I wanted to be a secretary, but could never quite get the hand of touch typing, so finding myself unemployed, I took up a hobby. I got myself some patterns and began taking photos of them and sharing them with friends. “One of them told me I should send the photos to a bridal shop, me not thinking I was going to get much of response. To my surprise, I ended up working there, and after one year of training and working on bridesmaid’s dresses, I finally ended up making alterations. After that I began working from home and had customers lining up at the door! It was time to get myself a shop. After three

years in Keyham, I moved into the village on May 11.” With two dressing rooms, a bright and funky decor and dresses and suits of all shapes, sizes and colours lining the walls all the way to the back of the room, it’s safe to say a lot of work has been put into getting the premises ready for opening. ‘It took a good six months of planning to get the shop to where it is today. We had some complications at the beginning, but pushed through and with a one months deadline to get everything together to open, it was a busy time! It’s such a big space so I’m really pleased with the result. The village has a very up and coming feel too. I’m so surprised by how much traffic there is outside the shop, it’s great.’ Found at 69 Devonport Road, Tina’s Tailoring and Bridal Wear also works alongside local businesses Seaspray, Flower Fayre and the Stoke Bar & Grill to offer a whole package wedding experience, complete with party venue. Call 01752 941353 or pop in to see Tina and Karen. The shop is open 9.30 - 5 Monday - Saturdays and closed on Tuesdays. It’s Wig Wednesday! A group of young volunteers going by the name of A Driven Force are raising funds to support CLIC Sargent to help make a difference to children and young people with cancer. The group have already raised £4,000 and their most recent fund-raiser involved encouraging everyone to wear a wig on May 20 to support CLIC Sargent and help make a difference to children and young people with cancer. CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. They provide clinical, practical and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. Last year over 100,000 people across the country took part in Wig Wednesday. Wig mania spread across the country, on national television and newspapers and thanks to the #wigselfie craze, social media was taken over with people wearing wigs! The event managed to raise over an incredible £280,000 for children and young people with cancer. Elisha Searl and Pete Jerett who are two volunteer representatives for CLIC Sargent also volunteer for A Driven Force, a project set up by a group of young adults

Both companies and many of the team involved have been immersed in the Plymouth property market for many years and the board of the new business has well over 150 years’ experience. who have taken on the challenge to improve the service for teenage and young adult cancer patients on behalf of Derriford Hospital. The hospital already benefits from brilliant services and support. However the thing that is lacking is a dedicated space, facilities and resources aimed at the specific need for young people. Young people long for a space where they can feel normal where they can relax, either alone or with family and friends; get access information on events and share their thoughts and feelings. Driven Force is making this happen by raising money from supporters and events, so far they have raised £4,000. Elisha said: “CLIC Sargent have supported me and my family exceptionally since my cancer diagnosis and I now feel that it is my turn to give back. I have been volunteering a lot with the charity and have been appointed the role of volunteer representative for CLIC Sargent. My work with CLIC Sargent involves having to attend events, prepare presentations and perform public talks about the charity, their work and my personal experience. “I am a huge supporter of CLIC Sargent’s events and Wig Wednesday is my favourite. It was an event for everyone to get involved with, help raise money and have lots of fun.”

Richard Rabin, who started Town & Country Lettings with Chris Forrest in 1997 said: “We are two like-minded property companies with a great history between us providing expert advice in both estate agency and lettings. “With the joining of our two companies we can offer our clients even more choice and appeal to a new and larger market while still maintaining our personal service which has created the companies that we are today.” James Clarke, who will be managing director of Lang Town & Country Estate agents – as Tracy Brady is for Lettings – said: “This merger is not about consolidation but about expansion and progress. The combined businesses share the same reputation for professionalism and customer service and we believe this will set Lang Town & Country apart from many other estate agency and letting businesses in Plymouth. “Town & Country have established a strong presence in the waterfront area and the north of the city while Lang & Co has traditionally been well represented in central areas such as Peverell, Hartley, Mannamead and Stoke and latterly in Plymstock and the South Hams. Freedom of speech and faith must always be cherished A wise friend of mine once said that a bird needs a left and right wing in order to fly. This conversation was in context regarding the developing progress of politics in the Western world and how we need aspiration to create wealth and opportunities, and a great sense of social responsibility and compassion within our communities to live in a reasonably harmonious existence together. Another wise friend told me that the only thing that is constant is change, so life is constantly developing. We are now post elections and on a journey with the politicians, which will impact on all of us in some way. Also a high turnout meant that we were using the gift of freedom that our forebears fought and died for. If you voted, well done, because it was for this ideal of freedom that our forebears went through so much.

as today we experience a city which is rising to become a regional capital for the South West. It is so easy to be cynical about ‘our lot in life’, but it wasn’t a luxury our forebears could afford as they were fighting for what Churchill described at the time as our ‘Christian civilisation’. In his famous speech he stated:

“The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.

“But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.”

This unique Plymouth Culture initiative is led by Plymouth City Council and supported by Arts Council England. Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “There are some lovely projects that will get a real boost from this bursary. This project just shows what great ideas people can come up with. The awards bring the number of projects Vital Sparks has funded so far to 17. Previous grants have helped create an outdoor theatre extravaganza on the shore at Devil’s Point, a craft programme for carers, a pupil-run arts project and the Whitleigh Word Festival. The five successful projects that will

receive bursaries are:

Seeds ‘N’ Feeds: £4,420 – To turn tired urban spaces into places of colour, beauty and recreation. The funding will bring neighbours together to create and enjoy community gardens in the St Peter & the Waterfront ward. Overgrown planters will have vegetables, fruit trees and flowers chosen by the community and a living willow sculpture will also be created. LGBT Community: £3,700 – The Plymouth LGBT Archive shines a light on the rich life and histories of the city’s LGBT communities. The Vital Sparks bursary will enable the archive to be explored by five writers. They will create new pieces of writing for stage and an opportunity to share this part of Plymouth’s history with a wider audience.

Alzheimer’s Society: £3,300 – Three memory cafes in Plymouth will come alive with percussion and improvised storytelling. ‘Sharing Stories’ is a project hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society for people living with dementia. Participants can express themselves creatively without having to rely on failing memories. Led by Nigerian artist, Abimbola Alao, this unique approach to storytelling uses improvisation, drama and reminiscence-based techniques and is especially designed for people who experience memory loss.

New sponsors for Field Gun team The Royal Navy’s Field Gun team from Plymouth has boosted its chance in the annual gun run competition with the support of new sponsors unveiled at Devonport Naval Base. Devonport Field Gun team were presented with their sponsored shirts by backers defence contractor Babcock, Plymouth-based firms Keyham Vaults pub and Summerskills Brewery and Saltash firm West Country Skip Hire. Lt Commander Andrew Horlock, Devonport Royal Navy gun crew officer, said: “This is a fantastic competition which shows the Navy off at its best and provides excellent training in core military standards. We are very grateful to local business for their support. “The Royal Navy is a major part of the community in Plymouth and local businesses benefit from our presence, so we all gain from this on-going partnership.” The naval base team is undergoing weeks of gruelling training ahead of the Royal Navy Field Gun Competition finals at the Royal Naval training base HMS Collingwood near Portsmouth on Saturday June 6. Chris Tompkinson, of Babcock, the Royal Navy’s major industrial partner, said: “We are very proud to be associated with the Royal Navy and the Devonport field gun team. We are the major partner in Devonport supporting the Royal Navy and very pleased to keep the tradition of the field gun alive and wish the guys all the best in the competition.” 23 Field Gun crews will take part in the competition to win the prestigious Royal Navy Field Gun Trophy. The crews from the South West include 42 Commando in Plymouth, Royal Naval Air Stations

Culdrose and Yeovilton and HMS Raleigh. Training is centred on a specific strength and conditioning programme specifically aimed for field gun with the emphasis on explosive use of energy and includes Olympic weight-lifting, speed and agility and functional fitness. The ethos behind the training and race fits in with that of required personal military attributes discipline, fitness, determination and teamwork. David Lewis, of Summerskills, is brewing a bottled beer in honour of the Devonport crew called Out, Back and Home. Some proceeds from the beer’s sales will go towards the Royal Navy, Royal Marines Charity. West Country Skip Hire director Dave Honey, a former Royal Naval field gunner himself, said: “I had five runs in the competition when I was in the Navy and I’m still an ardent supporter of the Field Gun team. I worked in the gym in Devonport before I left the Navy and I’m proud to be behind the Devonport team and wish them success.” Iain Woodhead is sponsoring the team and will sell the new brew at the Keyham Vaults. He said: “It makes complete sense for me to support the Royal Navy team because I’m a local business which benefits hugely from custom from the sailors. I have military customers from the Naval Base, so I am pleased to show my appreciation for their support in this way.” The Royal Navy’s field gun competition is a contest between teams from various Royal Navy commands, in which teams of sailors compete to transport a field gun and its equipment over and through a series of obstacles in the shortest time. The competition evolved during the early years of the 20th century. The ‘Command’ format, negotiating walls and a chasm, was held annually at the Royal Tournament in London from 1907 until 1999, apart from the periods during the World Wars.

- limited grants available in Plymouth Many homes in Plymouth were originally built because of a severe housing shortage. Energy efficiency was, understandably, not a priority. Times have changed considerably since then and the price of energy is a topic that is seldom far from news headlines. This is with good reason, with prices rising by around 60% in the last 5 years alone, savvy householders are seeking ways of reducing their ever-increasing energy bills.

Dawn encourages students to dig deep for Nepal Appeal trauma in terms of memories, occasional nightmares, and these are often triggered by images such as the ruined Central Church in Plymouth. I get very upset driving past it.”

College students have been urged to support the Nepal Earthquake Appeal by an earthquake survivor who now teaches at City College Plymouth.

In an effort to raise awareness of the crisis in Nepal, Dawn has taken the unusual decision to share her story with her students at City College Plymouth.

The first of two earthquakes struck the mountainous country in April with devastating force. It is estimated that more than 7,000 people have died, with countless thousands being left injured and homeless. Upwards of 50 per cent of houses are now thought to have been destroyed or are unsafe to live in, and the rainy season is imminent. With the majority of Nepal’s people now living without food or shelter, they will soon be at the mercy of the elements.

Dawn Jones with the emergency aid box which saved her life during the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake

The disaster in Nepal has attracted an international response to provide emergency aid and assistance, with local charities from Plymouth and Cornwall also involved in the relief effort.

“Local people had to use every initiative and shared basic resources to ensure they had food and shelter.

Seeing the coverage of the crisis in the media brought back traumatic memories for local woman, Dawn Jones, who was working as a teacher in Christchurch’s central business district when the devastating earthquake struck the New Zealand city in 2011.

College Plymouth, said: “My experiences in Christchurch were harrowing; it took four days for external aid and help to come.

“I can only imagine how much worse it will be for people in Nepal, which is still largely a developing country, where there are few resources and what little help there is can’t get to those who need it because of the geography and scale of the destruction. “The long term effects of something like this aren’t just physical. I’m still dealing with the

Dawn explained: “My immediate thought was that I have to help. I think it’s important for young people to understand that you can’t take anything in this life for granted. You never know when something will change your life forever.” College students joined Dawn for an informal talk about her experiences and the problems now being faced by the people of Nepal. Dawn concluded: “In the aftermath of the earthquake and aftershocks in New Zealand, I was really struck by the kindness and goodwill of ordinary people who helped each other. “It’s core to who we are and I don’t think young people realise just how strong they can be. I hope we can all contribute something to help those in need.” Staff and students at the college are currently raising funds through collection tins at the college and online through the Disaster Emergency Commission’s (DEC) Nepal Earthquake Appeal at www.dec.org.uk.

Supporting clean water and sanitation in Nepal Plymouth Soroptimists have sent a total of £900 for disaster aid to Nepal. During the past two years Plymouth and District Club have worked with the Nepal Water and Health Authority (NEWHA) to provide a whole village of almost 200 people with nine clean safe water wells and a latrine for every household. This means that the women and girls of the village not only have access to better health but have more time for education rather than water gathering and most importantly do not have to risk going into the forest for their toileting needs. It is the second village that the club have provided these essential facilities for in the past eight years. Sylvia Bedbrook of Plymouth Soroptimists said: “Since we have been in direct contact with NEWHA we know that the money will go directly to where it is most needed. Some of our photos show the delighted users – mainly the women and girls who have the most benefit from the facilities.”

Of course the simplest way to reduce your bills is just to turn everything off, though whilst this will reduce your bills it is likely to prove hazardous to your health! The more pragmatic approach is to look at ways to reduce your energy demand – that is to find ways of using less that still allows you to live in a comfortable environment.

J

eremiah’s Journey supports over 220 grieving children and families each year from Plymouth and the immediate surrounding area. With a very small team of employees this could only be possible with the support and dedication from a fantastic group of volunteers. The extended team bring vital skills and expertise to the charity and our work with families, without them we wouldn’t be able to support as many families as we do each year. One of the main parts of the service at Jeremiah’s Journey is to run group sessions for children, young people and their parents/carers. The children and young people have either been bereaved or, in a separate group, the children and young people have a parent who is terminally ill. There are two Project Coordinators but they cannot run various sessions for between 20 and 25 children and young people on their own! Both groups have a team of committed and experienced volunteers who give their time and energy to facilitate the sessions. The team need to create a safe space where children and young people feel able to talk about their feelings and what is happening in their lives. “Jeremiah’s Journey provides a fantastic service which gently

and compassionately helps young people explore their feelings during bereavement. Being able to help in this process as a volunteer is so rewarding and worthwhile”. Amanda, Group Volunteer. The team is made up of individuals who work professionally with children and families for example there are teachers, nurses, social workers and psychologists. It is necessary to ensure that everyone has the right skills and experience to be able to listen to distressing stories as well as assist the children in their creative activities. The sessions themselves have time for the children to talk about how they are feeling; their memories of their deceased loved one or fears for the seriously ill parent; and how they are coping. Creative activities are used to help make these conversations happen in a more natural way. “We started off sad but when the adults came they helped us… it was good to think of all the happy memories”. Hold an Afternoon Tea Party Now Summer is on its way, why not make the most of it and hold an Afternoon Tea Party? and holding buckets; and helping behind the scenes at our events. We hope that with the support of our community we will be there for the next child or family that needs us. There are also volunteers that specifically help to look after Jeremiah, the charity’s bear mascot, when he is out and about. Jeremiah especially likes meeting up with the children and families who use the service. He attends the Christmas party which is held every year for the children who have attended the group sessions. It is a chance for them to meet up with the friends that they have made in the group. The children are all very excited to see Jeremiah and we love to see their smiles. Whatever time and skills that volunteers bring, one thing is for sure that without their wonderful input the charity would not have been able to help so many local children and families at a very sad time. If you would like to make a donation to ensure that we can continue our work with local grieving children please fill in the form below or visit www. jeremiahsjourney.org.uk For enquiries about volunteering opportunities please get in touch with us on info@ jeremiahsjourney.org.uk

TV presenter Chris Packham supports Aquarium ‘What a Waste’ crowdfunder TV presenter Chris Packham has given his support to the National Marine Aquarium’s new crowdfunder campaign, ‘What a Waste’ which was launched in May.

A keen naturalist, Chris has backed the Aquarium’s bid to raise £30,000 for a new exhibit about marine plastic pollution. In an interview with the National Marine Aquarium’s managing director, Dr David Gibson, Chris shared his feelings on the devastating effects plastic pollution is having on our oceans and marine life, and expressed his ‘disappointment’ of constantly seeing plastics in our seas. Discussing the ‘What a Waste’ crowdfunder campaign, Chris commented: “Taking action is essential. I would urge anyone to take up the What a Waste campaign and support the crowdfunding. What the National Marine Aquarium can do to educate and inform people is absolutely essential. If you don’t know then you can’t take action – and it is essential that we do take action at this point.” Millions of tons of domestic and industrial plastic waste finds its way into the seas and oceans each year. As well as polluting seas, oceans and beaches, this plastic is lethal to many hundreds of species of marine animals. Plastic is now found throughout marine food chains as it chokes and kills thousands of animals such as turtles, whales, dolphins and seabirds each year and it is consumed by fish and invertebrates across the globe. It is so pervasive that it is now finding its way back to humans through the food chain. The ‘What a Waste’ exhibit will use plastic waste collected from beaches around the south west of England, and will be designed and built by a group of local Devon artists. It will be used to educate visitors to the Aquarium on the dangers plastic pollution poses to marine life and inspire them to help reduce it and its impact. Dr Gibson, commented: “We’re delighted to have Chris Packham backing our crowdfunder campaign. Chris has many years of experience working with wildlife and marine life and has seen firsthand the devastating effects plastic pollution can have.

Chris Packham (left) and Dr David Gibson

“By raising funds for a new exhibit, ‘What a Waste’ will provide a new platform for us to educate and engage visitors to the Aquarium on the dangers of such pollution, and inspire them to change how they use and then dispose of plastic items during their lives. “Our crowdfunding bid is now live and with a wide range of unique reward schemes available to help us raise the funds, we hope the public will get involved and enable us to achieve our ‘What a Waste’ exhibit. The crowderfunder campaign has also received support from the Rame Peninsula Beach Care and Marine Conservation Society. A spokesman from Rame Peninsula Beach Care said: “Nobody likes to go to the beach and find it covered in rubbish – but marine plastic is much more than just an eyesore. We’ve only been using plastic on a wide scale for 60 years, and the harm it’s already causing in the ocean is overwhelming. “Each year plastic kills at least one million sea birds and 100,000 whales, dolphins, seals and turtles, which either mistake it for food or become entangled in it. In some parts of the ocean there are six times more plastic particles than plankton. “Most marine litter starts out as litter on land, so we can actually do a lot to stop it ever reaching the sea. We want this exhibition to raise much-needed public awareness about marine litter and the unnecessary suffering it causes. We also hope it will spread the message that this is a tragedy we can all do something about – from government down to individuals and the everyday choices we make.”

MONEY MA££ERS with STEVE CAREY

What’s next for the people of Plymouth?

So now we know the outcome of the most unpredictable election in a generation. While many of the commentators and pollsters are asking ‘How did we get the predictions so wrong?’ this is not the question that households should be asking.

What’s next for Plymouth? Many promises were made in the last few weeks of the campaign, and many of them will have an impact on Plymouth and its travel-to-work area. Here are a few highlights. A new enterprise zone OK, this was promised in the most recent budget, but this should generate some large scale investment in the construction industry in its first phase. We should also see new employment opportunities and higher wages as the zone fills with new businesses. Investment in transport links Likely to be a long-term project! (It took Brunel over 11 years to get the GWR to Plymouth), but this should enhance Plymouth’s attractiveness as a location for business. There is a chance that the airport will re-open as well. (I’ll say no more on that emotive topic!).

Other developments The new mine at Hemerdon, and redevelopment of the old Seaton barracks site will generate significant employment opportunities.

Care and support is changing in Plymouth

Other signs of things to come As I write, the Bank of England has just issued its latest inflation forecast. While this may not be essential reading, all of us should take an interest as it gives us a clue as to when interest rates might start to rise. This has implications for: • Savers, who have to find ways to boost their incomes while rates remain low • Borrowers, who have got perhaps another year of low rates to enjoy • Would-be borrowers, who need to factor in the risk and size of future increases when making any long-term decisions. Inflation is also at a record low (0% in March 2015), and wages are starting to pick up. This should mean that we all feel a little better off as we head towards summer. But, (there’s always a but….) Inflation is expected to pick up quickly as we head towards autumn and winter, and interest rates are expected to rise in late spring/early summer next year. The rise may be gradual, but it is coming.

Hair and beauty students show off their skills

Make it happen Plymouth is an exciting place to be at the moment, with a large number of exciting opportunities. But we can only make it happen if we get behind those leading the charge, and hold them accountable for the promises they have made. It’s going to be an exciting five years. And let’s not forget those who aren’t able to take advantage of these opportunities, by making sure we look after the most vulnerable and needy in our society. Friends and relatives enjoyed the free hairstyling

Tamsin Bryant, team leader of Stars at the college, said: “The Academy is designed to be both fun and enjoyable, and enables students to gain

hands-on experience of creative hair styling, nail art and make-up. It also gives them the opportunity to get advice and guidance in pursuing a career in hair and beauty whilst studying at City College Plymouth. “The Academy gives the students a fantastic starting point to a career in the hair and beauty industry. However, it is about more than the technical skills - I have seen them develop more self-confidence and self-belief by working in a new environment with different people. “It is great to be part of this and to be able to reward the students in the form of a graduation ceremony.” Phoebe Richardson, 15, who took part in the course and attended the graduation, said: “It was a whole new experience. Everyone was really friendly and we all really enjoyed it. “We got to see what it’s like to work in the hair and beauty industry and it gave me a flavour of what to expect. I loved it!”

TANKS AND TABLECLOTHS AT PLYMOUTH ARTS CENTRE Artefacts which include tableware, rations and measures from the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre (DNHC), located behind the controlled boundaries of Devonport Naval Base, are on display in the upstairs gallery of the centre in Looe Street. A unique example of a peck, a unit of measurement immortalised in the tonguetwister ‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers’ and the only one on display nationally, form part of the exhibition as do a display of differing knives made specifically for ‘Flag Officers, Warrant Officers or patients of unsound mind’.

The new national changes are designed to put you in control of the help you receive.

• You can defer selling your home to pay your care fees until after your death.

Any decisions about your care and support will consider your wellbeing and what is important to you and your family, so you can stay healthy and remain independent for longer. Some changes have already started to be introduced in April 2015 and others in April 2016. The Care Act is mainly for adults in need of care and support, and their adult carers. If you are a young carer yourself, or if you are a parent caring for a disabled child, you have similar rights to assessment and support but they are covered by the Children and Families Act, not the new Care Act.

• All councils will use new national eligibility criteria to decide whether someone can get help from them.

As a way of congratulating the students on their achievements, they were then invited to the college’s Hair and Day Spa, Stars, for canapés and drinks. Friends and family were then invited to enjoy free hair styling, make-up and nail treatments.

26

• If your needs assessment shows you don’t qualify for help from the council, they must advise you how the care system works and how to pay for your own care. So if you just need a hand with housework, for example, the council should assist you in finding this.

• You will have a right to a free needs assessment from your council, even if it thinks your finances are too high or your needs are too low to qualify for help.

The graduation event took place in May, with the young students showcasing what they had learnt via a photoshoot presentation to friends and family in the college’s state-of-the art STEM Centre, as a celebration of their hard work during the ten weeks.

The exhibition, Tanks and Tablecloths, Chapter Two by artists, Elizabeth Masterton and Lizzie Ridout opened in May as part of Plymouth History Festival and continues until June 13.

From April 2015, care and support in England has been changing for the better. The new Care Act aims to make care and support more consistent across the country.

Ways in which it may affect you:

City College Plymouth has held a graduation event for young hair and beauty students who have recently finished a ten week Junior Hair and Beauty Academy programme.

An exhibition to temporarily relocate a little-known collection of naval heritage to a city centre gallery, alongside new artwork inspired by the collection, is currently on show at Plymouth Arts Centre.

By Claire Bower of Advice Plymouth

The artists have a particular interest in the domestic side of military life and have worked together for over ten years on similar projects, taking inspiration from the overlap between the military and the domestic terrain. New work, using photographic and other artworks, including a ‘fathom’ length of wool from Naval-issue jumpers, have been created by the artists to engage the audience to encourage them to interact with and reflect on the exhibition in more depth. The gallery is free to browse and open from 1pm to 8.30pm on Tuesday to Saturday.

• If you get social care support, you will now have a right to request a personal budget if you’re not offered one. This is a summary of how much the council thinks your care should cost. (This might be useful if you want to pay for your own care.)

• If you’re paying for your own care, you can ask the council to arrange your services for you. It can only charge you as much as someone whose care they are funding. • If you’re a carer, you have a legal right to a care assessment from the local council. You can also get support services if you qualify for them. • If you find it difficult to communicate or to understand the issues being discussed, the council must provide an advocate to help you when discussing your care. They will represent your interests if you don’t have a friend or relative who can help. • The council must provide preventative services that could reduce or delay your need for care. For example, intermediate care at home after a hospital stay could help keep you stay independent for longer. President Charles Charles Howeson, chairman of the Plymouth Area Business Council and former chair of First Great Western Trains Advisory Board has been appointed president of Plymouth & Devon Chamber of Commerce. At its recent annual meeting, the board of the Plymouth and Devon Chamber of Commerce unanimously invited Charles to become its president in succession to Sir John Parker. After a 25 year career in the Royal Navy, Charles has enjoyed an almost uniquely broad and certainly very successful business career. His career started locally, and became regional before moving on to lead national organisations and then held international appointments whilst always remaining loyal to Plymouth. Charles retains his links with the Royal Navy where the Queen appointed him to be one of her small number of Honorary Captains in the Royal Naval Reserve in 2009. He is a passionate believer in Plymouth, the South West and indeed the wider region, having been an active economic champion

now for over two decades. In accepting the role, Charles emphasised the importance of the Chamber movement in formally representing and helping to co-ordinate the business community’s representation alongside a range of other bodies. He believes that the need for business unity and for one voice, particularly where infrastructure investment is required, is absolutely vital, right across the region. He emphasised that ‘he would fight tirelessly to assist in the making of common cause in support of the economic development agenda beyond its boundaries whenever and wherever appropriate’ adding that the role of the Chamber of Commerce had never been more important. Richard Stevens, chairman of the Chamber said: “I am delighted to welcome Charles as president. Following the news of our widened geographic expansion, his addition to the board brings another skill set enabling further opportunities for us to coordinate a one voice lobbying approach which this region needs.”

Remembering Plymouth Sound Nowadays, with endless television and radio stations, it’s hard to imagine the excitement when Plymouth got its own radio station. At the time, the main stations were all broadcast by the BBC. Forty years ago, Plymouth Sound was launched and it soon had a huge following. The station was based in a former organ factory at Earl’s Acre off Alma Road in Pennycomequick and was launched on 19th May 1975. The first song broadcast was Cat Stevens’ Morning Has Broken.

For me, the best time to listen to it was in the 1970s when it all seemed so new and there were few other radio stations about. As the station grew older, there was suddenly a huge choice of other stations to listen to. By then, I’d moved on to the crackly fading broadcasts of Radio Luxembourg!

were, mostly, terrible but the fun was just in winning them. David Bassett broadcasted a talk show at 10 o’clock every morning and would have conversations about topical subjects or just anything anyone wanted to talk about. Some of the people who phoned in were unintentionally hilarious which made the show even more entertaining. In the summer holidays, most of the kids at school listened to it and many of them also took part.

Andrew Knight, who was aged nine at the time, won a competition to be the first voice heard on the new station. With prompting from station controller, David Bassett, Andrew went live on air at 6 o’clock on the morning of Monday May 19. Popular presenters at the time included Ian Calvert, Louise Churchill, Carmella McKenzie, Brian Measures, Peter Greig and David Bassett. There were many more in later years. I was thirteen and at school at the time when the station opened. It’s hard to believe now but there Carmella McKenzie hosting a show was a big thing about how to find the station and free car stickers and mugs. It seemed a big thing at how to tune into it (much the same as there was when the time. Channel 4 was launched). There was a show at the Guildhall to find out more about the station and to meet Everyone at school listened to the station and by far the most popular presenter was Ian Calvert whose some of the people behind it. evening show was broadcast just at the time when we Me and a school pal went along in the hope there were all doing our homework. would be some free records (we didn’t get any). Like In between records, Ian talked about his girlfriend, his everyone else, we came away with souvenirs such as dogs, his horses and anything else that was going on at the time. I remember him being the first DJ to play David Soul’s single when it first came out and also remember he’d sent a tape to Radio One of his show.

Derek Tait fondly remembers the early days of Plymouth Sound radio station - one of the first commercial stations in the country. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk

There were nightly phone-in competitions and the prize was inevitably six singles. I’d recognise some of the kids from my class entering the competitions (I won a few) and once we’d collected our prize singles from the station, we’d take them to school and try and swap them. They were always by artists you had never heard of and

Like Westward Television, there seems something very nostalgic about the early days of Plymouth Sound. Today, we’re overloaded with stations, many of which are listened to on the internet. Somehow, it just doesn’t seem to be the same and a lot of the appeal of the smaller radio stations, where we felt that we knew all the presenters, seems to have been lost over the years.

Brian Measures hosted an easy listening show in the evening which attracted a large audience. I won a Frank Sinatra LP on his show and my mum went to collect it. While she was waiting at the reception, she said that there was a bloke beside her who didn’t stop nattering on and telling jokes. She thought that he was just there to collect a prize but it turned out to be Frank Carson! Adverts needing an American sounding voice-over were done by my old guitar teacher, Pete Martin (he was actually Canadian). I wonder what happened to him?

The DJs were very popular at the time and I remember Ian Calvert bringing a football team to our school in the 1970s to play the teachers. Our teachers were hopeless (even the sports ones) so they inevitably lost! The station was a big thing in the 1970s and 1980s and was eventually re-branded Presenters Brian Measures, Louise Churchill, Carmella McKenzie, Heart Plymouth in Peter Greig, Ian Calvert and David Bassett

Chris Dawson speaks to Year 9 students at Stoke Damerel Community College

Chris Dawson inspires Stoke college students

It’s not every day a billionaire sets you a challenge but the whole of Year 9 at a Plymouth secondary school were given a task to complete when The Range’s Chris Dawson came to give a motivational talk. Once the Plymouth-born entrepreneur had finished his speech at Stoke Damerel Community College – where he told students about his life and how he built his business – he asked all 240 of them to think of one thing they could improve on and write it on a piece of paper to give to him when he returns to meet them a second time. “I was really pleased to be invited to come and talk to the students,” said Mr Dawson, who opened his first superstore in Plymouth in 1989 and now has more than 100 outlets across the UK. “I’m hoping I can make a difference young people are our future and I wanted to make it clear to them what you can achieve if you believe in yourself and work hard. What I want them to think about is that it doesn’t matter what your ambition is, you just need to have one. “They asked me some interesting questions and I think I gave them lots to think about for when I come back to speak to them again.” As well as asking Mr Dawson - who is at Number 57 on the Sunday Times Rich List - about his famous car collection, students also wanted to know what he would have been if he hadn’t been a businessman (an actor) and if he had ever made a mistake. “I haven’t made a mistake,” Mr Dawson replied. I’ve had things that didn’t work out, but it’s always better to try.” After his talk Mr Dawson also met a group of sixth form students and was given a tour of the college.

“Students told me they were amazed at how honest and interesting he was,” said Year 9 learning manager Dan Cole. “Quotes like ‘if you don’t start, you can’t finish’ and ‘you are in control of your life’ and ‘my job tomorrow is to beat what I have done today’ will definitely stay with them,” said Mr Cole. “So will the key message of have a dream and strive to reach it, taking small steps along the way.” Year 9 student Eboni Longworth said she found the talk ‘inspiring’. “It really made me think about my future,” she said. Fellow Year 9 Max Soutar said he thought it was a ‘privilege’ to hear Mr Dawson speak. “He is a very busy person so we are lucky that he gave up his time to speak to us and answer our questions,” said Max, 14. “I’m really looking forward to the next time he comes in - I’ve already started thinking about what I’m going to write on my piece of paper.”
