A group of GCSE art students were given an inspiring talk by contemporary artist Edward Waite at his exhibition currently on display at Residence One in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard. The students from St Boniface’s Catholic College in Manadon Park spent time viewing the fascinating artwork across three floors of Residence One; looking at the artist’s sketchbooks and large format paintings for inspiration for their school projects. Mr Waite explained how he draws influence from his surroundings - and from other artists which allowed him to develop his unique approach to capturing urban landscapes. Year 9 student Joe Vatcher was in awe and commented “It was really good to meet a real artist and ask him about his career. I’ve got lots of ideas now for my coursework.” Head of Art - Jayne Wills, organised the trip during the Easter holidays to ensure the students had the opportunity to meet the artist in person. “It is such a rare opportunity for children to meet the artists we discuss in class. The visit today has allowed the class to appreciate the importance of growing and developing as an artist in their own right.” Mr Waite signed copies of his gallery catalogue for each student.

The Plymouth Shopper

A £462 million transformation of Plymouth’s health and social care which will ‘change the face of public services’ has been launched. More than 170 social work staff have been transferred from Plymouth City Council to Plymouth Community Healthcare as part of the move. The hope is by bringing social workers closer to community nurses and other healthcare staff, people can get care more easily, and which is more focused on their needs.

Plymouth Community Healthcare has won an initial £71 million contract to bring adult health and social care services together in the city. The number of employees working for Plymouth Community Healthcare, which runs services including Mount Gold Hospital, has gone from 2,340 to more than 2,500. Social worker Stephanie England, based in Windsor House on Tavistock Road said that with time the shift would be “the best thing that’s going to happen to us”. She said: “From a community point of view, it’s difficult to get everyone in the same place. The long-term goal for me as a social worker would be teams that are located together so we can discuss people’s needs straight away and work together.

“All the logistical things are yet to be sorted, but I’m happy we are part of the same business so there’s scope to actually do it. “Some people had worries about their own employment rights and personal things, but we have accepted it’s the best move for everyone, especially our clients.” While no staff have moved offices yet, over the next year workers will come together in “natural alliances” and change the way they work, according to Steve Waite, chief executive of Plymouth Community Healthcare. “This is the first time we have looked at absolutely transforming the whole health and social care system for this city,” said Carole Burgoyne, director for people at Plymouth City Council. “One of the main things we’re looking at is how we can work together to reduce the pressures on our system. How do we bring these services together to bring better outcomes for patients and reduce demand?

“This is about providing wrap-around support and making a real impact.” Tracey Lee, chief executive of Plymouth City Council said: “This changes the face of public services, and it reminds me how strong our relationships are across the city.”

Education Secretary praises dementia work during her visit to Stoke college

“We really enjoyed being able to show her just some of the amazing work that goes on here at Stoke Damerel. It has been a momentous week at the college so, of course, it was also very special to have representatives of some of our Studio School partners here today as well.”

A Plymouth secondary school’s dementia education work has been described as ‘inspiring’ by the Education Secretary during a visit to the school. Nicky Morgan MP visited Stoke Damerel Community College recently, just days after it was announced that the college’s plans for a 375-place medical and healthcare studio School had been given the green light. After being given a presentation about the college’s award-winning Dementia Project and the Studio School plans Ms Morgan, who was accompanied by Oliver Colvile MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, joined a dementia croquet session. The croquet mornings are now a regular event at the college hosted by Year 7 students and attended by local residents, many of whom are living with dementia. “It was a pleasure to visit Stoke Damerel today and to hear from some of the students,” said Ms Morgan.

The college also welcomed Professor David Bristow and Dr Nick Toms from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and Plymouth City Council chief executive Tracey Lee as part of the event in March, as well as Ian Sherriff, an Alzheimer’s Society trustee and academic partnership lead for Dementia, Plymouth University. Carol Hannaford looks on as Nicky Morgan tries her hand at croquet at one of the college’s Dementia Croquet sessions

“I am delighted to announce that the school will be working with partners to open a new studio school, preparing the next generation of doctors, nurses and dentists.

“It was inspiring to hear about the work the school is also doing through the Dementia Project, and to see students playing croquet with some of the older local residents,” added Ms Morgan, who was told more about Jiminy Dementia Project co-ordinator Lana Helmore shows Nicky Morgan Wicket - the students’ work charity

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

croquet initiative - by Andrew Creasey, one of its founders. As well as trying her hand at croquet Ms Morgan met a number of students and heard about recent internship placements at Whitehall and visits to Oxford and Cambridge universities as part of the college’s Excel Programme. Then followed a drama lesson and a meeting with trainee teachers who are training at the college as part of the School Direct programme.

“I’m very proud to have been on this journey with them – a journey I think will continue for many years to come.”

College principal Carol Hannaford said being part of the Education Secretary’s visit to the South West was a ‘real privilege’. “We are extremely grateful that she was able to fit a visit to us into an incredibly busy schedule,” said Mrs Hannaford. “I was struck by the rapport she had with the students who showed her around and I was very impressed by her genuine interest in, and, understanding of, the needs of young people.

“Once again Stoke Damerel Community College has been recognised at the highest level, and rightly so,” said Mr Sherriff. “Over the past three years they have taken the mantle of dementia education and turned words into action. Last year they were a winner in the inaugural Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Awards and most recently the College was highlighted as an exemplar school in the Prime Minister’s challenge on dementia 2020.

Year 7 student Jessie Clarke accompanied Ms Morgan on her tour of the school and said it was ‘very exciting’ to have met her. “You don’t normally get to meet such an important person – it’s not something that everyone gets to do,” said Jessie, aged 11. “I’m glad she came to the croquet because I really enjoy it. I like getting to know the older people who come and look forward to seeing them the next time.”

Congratulations to the winners of the Samphire Bush competition which appeared in the March edition of the Shopper. The five winners were Mrs Giles from Stoke, Mrs Mather from Mutley, Rachel Tarrant from Plymstock, Karen Turton from Widey View and Mrs Gill from Masefield Gardens.

Youngsters celebrate completion of Skills Aid programme The first group of young people from three city schools have celebrated completing the Skills Aid Plymouth (SAP) course at an award ceremony in front of their parents, teachers and mentors and the businesses that have taken part in the project. The SAP scheme, the first of its kind in Plymouth, is a joint project between the City Council and Plymouth’s Rotary Clubs, who have provided the majority of the volunteer mentors working on the scheme. It is designed to help pupils understand and gain important employability skills which will improve future chances in an increasingly competitive job market and broaden their career options. Three schools have been involved in SAP and teachers from All Saints Church of England Academy Plymouth, Marine Academy Plymouth and Sir John Hunt put forward the names of young people they felt most likely to benefit from the scheme.

University to host Big Festival Weekend

Plymouth University’s world class facilities and place at the heart of the community are to be showcased to the public as never before.

13 year old Leo said he felt he’s gained confidence since being on the project: “We learnt a lot about work. We also saw that the jobs that are available are not just the obvious ones. Every business needs lots of different skills, such as communication, team work, planning, good time keeping, leadership etc. And I think the whole experience helped us realise what we need to do to get the jobs that we would really like.” The young people involved were all assigned a personal mentor for one year, who not only helped them with practical tasks like coursework linked to employability but have also been with them on all the field trips and visits to local businesses. Sarah Slater, from Sir John Hunt said: “As link teacher with responsibilities for providing careers advice and guidance the Skills Aid Programme has been a real asset for helping students understand the types of jobs and careers they can aspire to. Throughout the scheme we have seen a great deal of positive change in the students who have gained valuable skills and a better

understanding of what the city of Plymouth can offer them in the future” Judith Harwood, assistant director for Learning and Communities said: “Skills Aid Plymouth is a great scheme that targets young people in need of a little extra guidance and support to help them achieve in life. Furthermore it is a real cooperative venture involving the City Council, schools, Plymouth’s Rotary Clubs and a diverse range of local businesses who each host inspiring visits and experiences to raise the aspirations of our young students” To kick off the SAP scheme, the group met with their new mentors at a launch event in at Plymouth Argyle. This was followed by visits to Centrica, the National Marine Aquarium, Babcock International, Shelterbox, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Plymouth Community Homes, Dartmoor Zoo and Vospers.

From open-air cultural events to laboratory tours, exhibitions of student work to pioneering partnerships, the city centre campus will be thrown open for The Big Festival Weekend on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June. Two days of events will aim to give visitors a flavour of life at the University and the role it is playing in transforming lives locally and globally. The weekend will also include the 2015 Plymouth Respect Festival, being organised by the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council and bringing a blend of culture, cuisine and colour to the University campus. Professor David Coslett, Interim Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, said: “For more than 150 years, we have been at the heart of this great city, supporting a wide range of activities as part of our commitment to the local community. “This weekend is all about opening our doors, and inviting current and future friends and partners to see some of our exciting and innovative work and to find out how they can be part of our ongoing journey. The inclusion of the Plymouth Respect Festival within the weekend will add to the sense of excitement and vibrancy, and we are looking forward to sharing those days with our community.” The Big Festival Weekend will include opportunities to tour cutting edge University facilities such as the Marine Building, with wave tanks rated among the best in Europe and a cutting edge navigation simulator, the Immersive Vision Theatre, and scientific and medical laboratories used for potentially life-changing research.

Expecting between 400 and 600 visitors, LEAP director Annette Laurie, said: “By the end of the day there were between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors to this free event, with people finding spaces to sit all over the area and enjoy picnics, chase bubbles from bubble making artists or listen to the music. “We were asked several times by visitors what it was in aid of,” said Ian Laurie “and we just told people that it’s a family fun day – for people to try different hot foods, buy local gifts, crafts, and toys or listen to the eclectic mix of live music, which saw children and adults dancing and joining in. “There was all the entertainment for the children with face painting, pony rides, inflatable activities and other fun things to do as well‚“. People were encouraged to take along their sports gear or swimming costumes and visit the Life Centre afterwards – making a real day of it. Following the successful involvement at Devonport Park last year, it was decided to move the LEAP events to Central Park as it

Native Makers market in June Creative graduate duo are back with another unique makers market at Devonport Guildhall on June 6.

After the success of their festive market in December, Rosie Drake-Knight and Emily Dymond are bringing ‘Native Makers’ back for another artisan event. “The popularity of our first market was unimaginable. We knew that Plymouth was missing an event like ours, but we had no idea how great the attendance and feedback would be’” said Emily, illustration graduate of Plymouth College of Art. “This time around we have gained the support of Devonport Guildhall, who are kindly hosting our event in June.” Rosie, textile design graduate of Falmouth University said: “Our Makers are carefully selected and we curate a space that supports the quality of their work.” “On graduating, both Emily and I faced the struggle of finding a suitable selling platform in Plymouth, so we decided to create one ourselves. Native Makers is specifically designed to support young, local artisans.” Native Makers takes place at Devonport Guildhall on June 6 from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free. 8

Slice A Pizza serves up new food concept in the Armada Centre

An exciting new Italian-American food concept has been launched in Plymouth.

Slice A Pizza has been opened in the Armada Shopping Centre by Lesley Bunce and Malkolm Park, who already run the popular Oggy Oggy Pasty Company. The couple have invested a six-figure sum in the new pizza parlour where customers can buy a slice of pizza for as little as £1. Lesley, who was born and raised in Plymouth, left the city in her late teens, spending over 20 years running bars and restaurants in many locations throughout Africa, Europe and the USA.

She returned to Plymouth in 2005 and ran The Minerva pub and The Swan in Noss Mayo before she and Malkolm acquired the Oggy Oggy Pasty business in 2013. “I was aware that the unit in the Armada Centre was empty,” said Lesley, “and felt it would be an ideal location for this new venture. “There are eateries on virtually every street corner in Italy and the USA selling pizza by the slice, but no-one has tried it here in the UK,” she said. “It represents a big investment for us, but we are really pleased to be operating as a new business in the West End of the city,” she added.

The former Jessops camera shop has been fitted out in an American-Italian style with seating for up to 40 inside and more outside on the Armada Centre’s ground floor. It opened for business in February, with an official launch by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Coun Michael Fox in April. The nine-strong Slice A Pizza team have all been trained by Italian pizza specialist Michaele Palumbo, while the pizza dough used by Slice A Pizza is supplied by the Il Cappricio restaurant in Frankfort Gate. More than a dozen pizza varieties are available at any one time and customers can also create their own pizza from a selection of nearly 30 toppings.

chocolate with a wide range of cold drinks also available, including smoothies. The couple’s investment has included the creation of a distinctive brand for the business. “We believe that this concept offers an ideal franchise opportunity and we hope to open similar outlets in Plymouth and further afield,” added Lesley. Slice A Pizza is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Slice A Pizza is also available for kids’ parties from £3 per child. Education Training Marine Academy Plymouth – where stars shine brighter Marine Academy Plymouth will be holding an open evening on Tuesday June 23 for prospective students and their parents. The evening is aimed at pupils currently in Year 4 and 5 who are due to transfer to secondary school in September 2016 and September 2017. Providing for students aged 0-19, Marine Academy Plymouth is an all-through campus and was the first Marine Academy to open in the UK. It prides itself on its ability to nurture and encourage its students to be innovative, creative, spirited, curious and pioneering, to help them discover their talents and transform their future. So why a Marine Academy? Well, the world of marine is exciting; it is part of how Plymouth grew as a city and is a key part of our future. The Academy’s passion for all things marine allows it to develop the skills and talents of its students.

Whilst specialising in marine, which embraces science, maths, technology and the environment, the academy also places a high emphasis on access to opportunities for education outside of the classroom. Marine Academy Plymouth’s Principal, Nick Ward, explained about the Academy: “Our ethos is based on four core values: aspiration, achievement, respect and community. “Our commitment is to offer a broad and exciting curriculum with an emphasis on education outside of the classroom, enabling each individual to become an effective learner with high aspirations and who can go on to achieve their ambitions. “Our students are offered an exciting range of subjects and benefit from additional courses and activities before and after school, at weekends and during the holidays. We offer an inclusive learning culture that values and respects all people equally, where diversity is seen as a rich source of learning and all demonstrate tolerance and mutual respect. “Our Academy is more than a school; it’s often thought of as the ‘Hub on the Hill’ – a valuable

and integral part of the community. We offer an extensive community programme including the highly successful sports offer, adult learning, community theatre and a number of further partnerships offering activities on-site to students, their family and members of the public. Over £14m has been injected into the Academy’s buildings and facilities, which are now simply breath-taking. The buildings were created on the absolute belief that our children matter and deserve a wonderful environment in which to learn, grow and develop. We are immensely proud of the achievements of our young people and the community we are building here. We hope to be able to share that with you and your children at our next Open Evening.” The Open Evening, which begins at 6pm, will allow prospective students and their parents to tour the campus, learn more about what studying at the Academy entails and the opportunities on offer for students. For further information about Marine Academy Plymouth and the Year 4 and 5 Open Evening, visit www.marineacademy.org.uk or call 01752 213939.

17-year-old Bettina Beoleg said she liked the support she received on her four-week education course in Plymouth, and the help with looking for a career in tourism and catering.

20-year old Dora Kerhai from the Bathory Istvan Secondary School in West Hungary plays football every weekend for an all-women’s football team that is massively popular in the country. She recently attended a four-week English and work placement programme at the Tellus Education Group in Plymouth.

Bettina, Anett and Dora came to the UK through the EU-funded programme Erasmus+ which enables young Europeans to improve their linguistic and professional skills abroad.

Dora said: “I really enjoyed my time working at the Glassblowing House Restaurant and Bar on the Barbican, and met some fantastic people, and I learned a lot about British culture and food tastes. But I especially made some great new friends and I’ve loved my time in Plymouth, and my ambition for the future is to set up my own restaurant in Hungary.” “We all see our futures in a different way,” said 20-yearold Anett Fekete also from the Bathory Istvan Secondary School. “I enjoyed my time working at the Glassblowing House restaurant, I came to Plymouth to improve my English language skills and feel my self-confidence has really improved and will help in my job searches back home.”

Mannamead scheme paves the way

Pioneering Plymouth housing group set to deliver 5,000 affordable homes A new Plymouth-based rent-toown housing model that will give thousands of tenants their first step onto the housing ladder has been launched with plans to deliver 5,000 affordable homes across England by 2020. The new model has been created by housing company Rentplus with the financial backing of private and institutional investors and the first agreements to deliver 900 homes have been approved by Plymouth City Council and Sedgemoor District Council. The company is currently closing the first £70m of institutional funding as part of an overall plan to raise £600m - £700m of institutional investment over the next five years. Rentplus brings together local authorities, national and regional house builders, developers and housing associations in a partnership to build much-needed new affordable homes to help tackle the nation’s housing crisis. Rentplus is working with local housing associations to provide new purpose built homes available at affordable rents for an agreed period of between five and 20 years.

At the end of their rental agreements, tenants will be given the opportunity to purchase their property and will receive a ten per cent gifted deposit from Rentplus to help their mortgage application, although tenants will not be obliged to buy. Construction work on the first development of 29 properties at Mannamead in Plymouth, 13 of which will be Rentplus homes, will begin in April. Tamar Housing Society, the leading housing association in Rentplus’ consortium in the South West, will manage the Rentplus properties in Plymouth. Rentplus chief executive, Richard Connolly, said: “We are delighted to launch Rentplus and to announce the first large scale agreements with Plymouth City Council and Sedgemoor District Council to commence the delivery of 500 new affordable homes in Plymouth and 400 across Sedgemoor. “Rentplus offers the best of affordable renting and home ownership rolled into one. It will give many people the opportunity to own their own home for the first time and will enable local authorities to increase the affordable housing stock and reduce housing waiting lists. “The ten per cent gifted deposit is a unique feature of Rentplus that will make a huge difference to many

Artist’s impression of the Mannamead development which will provide more than a dozen affordable homes

tenants struggling to put money aside. Unlike other proposed rent-to-own models, Rentplus is already a reality with the first development now underway in Plymouth and the business has the strong financial backing to enable sustained and rapid growth.” Chief Executive of Tamar Housing Society, Julie Barnett, said: “Rentplus gives Tamar Housing Society the opportunity to help meet the needs of many local households who aspire to home ownership but are unable to save a deposit due to high private sector rents. We will offer support and guidance to help tenants to move into home ownership which is often a stressful time for any first-time buyer. “As a smaller local registered provider, Rentplus homes will enable Tamar to grow and increase our turnover which, in turn, means that we can offer a wider range of services to all of our residents. Rentplus is an exciting new affordable housing product which we are proud to support and promote nationwide.” As part of the company’s ambitious plans for growth, the Rentplus team is already working extensively with

representatives of national and regional house builders and has secured further significant interest from local authorities across England. The Rentplus model has been created by teams from developer Pillar Land Securities and housing association Tamar Housing Society. The Rentplus Board comprises senior figures from the world of business, including Chairman John Gildersleeve, who is also the chairman of British Land, one of the country’s biggest property development companies. Mr Gildersleeve said: “We have a unique opportunity to deliver an alternative solution to the country’s housing crisis while supporting the home ownership aspirations of the many thousands of people who feel locked out of the housing market. “Rentplus is a sound and ethical investment that will benefit all those involved. Tenants have the chance to realise home ownership, local authorities increase their housing supply without grant funding and the increased work for house builders and developers will create jobs and help the economy.”

City College students preparing to set off for the big beach clean up

BTEC sports students from City College Plymouth recently took part in a much needed beach clean at Seaton and Downderry beaches, as part of the ‘Surfers Against Sewage Big Beach Clean’. Set to be the biggest ever, the Big Spring Beach Clean 2015 aims to cover at least 150 beaches and mobilise up to 5,000 beach clean volunteers to remove tonnes of beach litter from around the UK coastline. The students volunteered their services as part of their activities week, where they have the

opportunity to gain valuable experiences which can assist them with employability and life skills. Sports tutor, Luke Henderson, said: “Fifteen of our students turned up eager to do their part. Surfers Against Sewage really supported us with this activity and sent us various materials to assist us on the day including gloves, bin bags and disposal kits enabling the students to patrol the beach picking up an array of litter. “When studying a sport qualification the emphasis is on providing a varied, diverse and challenging programme where the students can develop in a variety of areas focusing on education, employability and community involvement. This was

certainly a challenge to the students.” Student, James Jennings, 16, said: “I really enjoy opportunities where I can volunteer and do my part for the community. “This is a worthwhile activity which is excellent for my CV and gives me a sense of achievement. “I am eager to do some research to find out about more initiatives I can be part of and promote in the future.” The students picked up litter from each beach and undertook a general tidy up, resulting in 30 bin liners of rubbish being collected. If you are interested in sport courses available at the college, go along to the course information drop-in event on April 29, 4pm to 6pm, Kings Road.

Funding boost for Mount Edgcumbe

Mount Edgcumbe Country House and Park, which is jointly run by Plymouth City and Cornwall Councils, has secured nearly £700,000 for improvements to its historic landscape and listed structures.

Natural England, the government’s adviser on the natural environment, has awarded the funding through its Higher Level Stewardship Scheme.

‘Boring space’ at Ford church turned into sensory garden by volunteers

Above: A handful of volunteers from the church community braved the miserable weather. Below: A great choice of hardy reeds, shrubs and perennial herbs found their place in the stony ground. The plants will attract and feed wildlife as well as being tasty in the kitchen

The Big Greenspace Challenge is jointly run by Plymouth City Council and South Hams District Council to enhance parks and other green spaces in the area. The scheme is supported by the Langage Landscape Fund from the development of the Langage Energy Centre at Plympton by Centrica. One of the purposes of the fund is to support landscape and planting schemes involving the community. “Due to circumstances we missed the deadline by two weeks,” continued Almuth, “but were still able to submit our application. Needless to say we were delighted on hearing it had been accepted and we’d been allocated resources.” Chris Coldwell from Plymouth City Council guided the church through the whole process.

Mount Edgcumbe, which is a grade 1 listed historic landscape with three scheduled ancient monuments and over 56 listed buildings, will receive nearly £430,000 to restore some of its historic landscape features and listed structures over the next two years. A small proportion of the funding will also be used towards replacement fencing, new bird boxes and scrub clearance. An additional annual payment of £27,000 has also been secured for the next 10 years to help increase the diversity of the flora and fauna of the estate. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Mount Edgcumbe is a vitally important green space for those who live in, work in and visit Plymouth and the Rame Peninsula. This funding will help us restore, maintain and

develop an important landscape at a time when it would otherwise be unaffordable. The improvements we make will help Mount Edgcumbe build on its uniqueness while becoming an even more sustainable, accessible and attractive environment for people to enjoy, both now and for future generations.” The Jessop Consultancy, a UK-based heritage practice that specialises in working with historic buildings, landmarks and landscapes, has been appointed to work with Plymouth City and Cornwall Councils, Natural England, English Heritage and the Cornwall Archaeological Service to identify the features and structures that are priorities for conservation and restoration. The decision to include the improvements in the council’s capital programme was signed this week and may be subject to call-in for scrutiny.

Arts and crafts at the Yard

A new sensory garden has been created at Ford Baptist Church, thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and funding from the Langage Landscape Fund. Almuth Lauch from Ford Baptist Church said: “When the Plymouth Shopper featured the Big Greenspace Challenge in 2012, it sparked the idea to enter our big and rather boring green space in front of the church hall hoping we could transform it into an inviting and uplifting spot of nature.”

The scheme provides capital and revenue funding to farmers and land managers to conserve, repair and restore landscapes of historic value.

“We want to see this gorgeous sun trap busy with people enjoying each others company over a barbecue or other occasions such as toddlers group, bible study and a monthly fellowship tea. Any donations towards this goal would be greatly appreciated. Roy Bailey, generation manager of the Centrica Langage Energy Centre said: “It really is fantastic for us at Langage Energy Centre to be able to support great community focussed projects like these, seeing the benefits that these projects bring make Centrica and the power station team feel very proud.” Almuth extends a warm welcome to all the community to be part of family friendly church activities, and enjoy the space that has been created, whilst pleading that dog and cat mess be left outside!

The Royal William Yard is teaming up with Born Hectic Events to present the first ever Arts & Crafts Fair at the Yard on Saturday and Sunday May 16 and 17.

contemporary work.

No stranger to such events, Born Hectic work regularly with the Port Eliot and Glastonbury festivals as well as producing specialist Christmas markets.

Emily Handslip, associate director, Urban Splash said: “We are passionate about offering the very best experience and bringing quality events to Plymouth, that continue to make the Royal William Yard a premier waterside destination in the South West.

Rick Worthy of BHE comments, “We are all excited to be involved in such a high quality event in such a lovely and prestigious place as the Royal William Yard. It’s Plymouth’s maritime jewel that’s now alive with cafes, bars and artists’ studios, and it’s a great opportunity for local Westcountry artisans to show what they can do and exhibit their best work.” The Devon Guild of Craftsmen and the Devon Artists Network have been invited to bring their work to the Yard and will be housed in a large white marquee on the main lawn alongside other exhibitors in their own marquees, all with interesting arts and crafts. The Plymouth University BA Arts degree students have also been asked down to exhibit their latest

Rick continues, “We are looking for quality Arts & Crafts artisans for this first time event. The work should be well presented with a good sense of artistic flair. With only top quality traders being considered.”

“We are delighted that local company, Born Hectic Events will be putting on such a high quality Arts and Crafts event in the Royal William Yard and know it will only add to the great offering we have for visitors in terms of retail and leisure.” Designed by Victorian architect Sir John Rennie and constructed between 1825 and 1831, the Royal William Yard is the largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe. Originally the Victualling Yard to the Royal Navy it is now a thriving living, working, retail and leisure space. www.bornhecticevents.co.uk

Aspirations were discussed, plans drawn up, submitted and revised once the amount of funding available for the project had been agreed on. In May last year work got under way when a level area in the sloping garden was created by the Conservation Volunteers with the intention to add seating. The second big development would see a prominent section of the garden turned into a sensory garden. The aim was to create a feast for the senses – colour, smell and taste buds – and a feast for the wildlife while still being low maintenance. Dennis Trewin from the Horticultural Therapy Trust designed and delivered an exciting scheme with his team of volunteers and the gloomy morning of the Saturday before Easter saw it all completed. Almuth added: “We are extremely pleased to have had Dennis on board who had formerly overseen the fantastic redevelopment of Devonport Park. His knowledgeable expertise of plants and his eye for fantastic design have left a lasting impact and we are truly grateful for all his input and work. “Continuing the work we will display a poster inside the church where you can learn about all the different plants in the sensory garden and are fund raising to build a deck to extend the existing patio into a more usable space.

Why now could be the best time to install a new boiler and save £££’s on your heating With the summer months fast approaching it may seem an unlikely period to think about central heating but it’s actually the most convenient time to replace your boiler with a more efficient model. Richard Down from local company Moorheat Plumbing & Heating explained: “Breakdowns can make cold, dark winter days even more miserable so summer is the perfect time to complete annual maintenance and put money saving measures in place to ensure you’re fully prepared for the return of the cold weather later in the year. “ “By investing now householders across the city could save significant amounts of money in the longer term. Just by replacing a 10 year old boiler with an efficient A-rated new one you could reduce your energy consumption by a third and save up to a whopping £300 per year on your gas bill. If every household in the UK installed a high efficiency boiler the energy saved would be enough to provide heating and power for almost two million homes!” With this in mind Moorheat Plumbing & Heating is currently offering incredible deals on A-rated Worcester Boilers – winner of the Which best buy award for the fourth year running. Hyde Park Electrical small enough to care, big enough to cope Sometimes certain DIY projects need a bit of professional assistance. The highest on the list must be when the project includes any electrical work as well. According to the excellent website, www.diyfixit.co.uk electrical work can be deemed notifiable or non notifiable. A competent DIYer may be allowed to carry out non notifiable work without having to notify the Building Control Officer but it is always advised to check with them first. The golden rule is always, if you don’t know, ask – and Hyde Park Electrical are a local firm that can be counted on to provide honest advice and offer a free consultation which they would always recommend before you begin any work on your property that involves electrical work. You might even discover that it works out as cheap and without all the extra stress to employ them to do the job for you. With a team of six they can generally come out without much notice, and are small enough to care for customers just requiring small jobs done. They are also big and experienced enough to cope. As one of the contractors involved in the recent light up of Smeaton’s Tower and the revamped lighting of the bombed out Charles Church they now have two local landmarks to add to their portfolio. (As an aside, we’re delighted that these contracts were awarded to a small local firm – gives hope to everyone out there!) They have been registered with NICEIC (National I nspection Council of Electrical Installation Contractors) for many years at the highest standard of Approved Contractor, for which they are inspected annually. They are fully insured for all electrical works, domestic, commercial, and industrial.

MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

General Election - why should I bother? So now we all know – the general election is set for May 7. Which is the bigger problem today? Is it ignorance or apathy? ‘I don’t know and I don’t care.’

Experience WITH CHRIS COLE

Such is the attitude of many to politics today, but the fact is that someone has to govern our country and the better the integrity, honesty and professional competence of those we elect for government, the more likely Britain is to prosper. There are 650 seats in Parliament up for grabs and the usual promises are being made by the various parties with everyone questioning the viability of the proposals of their opposition parties.

Monday - Friday 1pm - 2pm

So who do we believe? Well no one seems to know - if we look at the current polls no party has a clear majority. In practice, whoever wins (or more likely the parties that get together and agree to combine their seats to form a “winning total”) will have somewhat restricted choices available. This is because the country still remains with a massive national debt – higher in 2015 than at the date of the last election in 2010 in fact (now 88% of GDP; it was 78% of GDP in 2010).

There appears to be no choice but to continue to take unpopular measures including cutting public expenditure and increasing taxes. We have lived too long on credit as a country and payback is now necessary. Of course, a country is just the sum of its individuals and the root of our problems are at this micro level – we, the people of Britain have generally lived beyond our means for

many years now. We have relied for instance on perceived values of properties to borrow money to spend on day to day living. Our financial institutions have encouraged people to borrow money and made it freely available even to those without the security of property behind them. Perhaps the fact that the latest election opinion polls show the two main political parties are very close in terms of support reveals that no one really stands out as having the solution to this situation. I am reminded that the general public didn’t always have the right to vote in this country. Some people died for their right to have a vote; surely we at least owe it to them to exercise our right to vote. My personal suggestion if that we look at the views, character and integrity of the individual candidates standing in our own constituency and vote for the person we consider best placed to represent this country in a leadership role. One benchmark might be whether they would personally endorse the “2015 Declaration of British Values”, which among other things champions the protection of freedom of conscience from state interference, the upholding of British Law (as opposed to foreign law such as Sharia or European) and the sanctity of life. I would therefore urge all readers to vote on May 7 and thereafter ensure your represented MP (whoever it is) has your support and encouragement to do their job well going forward. As for the debt issue, well, we can actually help the national debt problem by correcting

our own personal financial balance sheet. My advice is always to pay off personal debts as quickly as possible. As debt levels reduce, our ongoing monthly outgoings will also reduce as interest payments form a lower proportion of these. If you require assistance with debt issues, then seek independent, professional and confidential help. This year Plymouth Soroptimists have 10 presidents instead of one. As an experiment, the club will have a new president each month to find out if committing to only one month in the ‘big chair’ would bring a new element of innovation and energy to the club. Each president will bring a different outlook with subjects as diverse as Mary’s Meals, Computer Security, Royal Letters, Midwife in China, to the first female manager of the Red Arrows. Alongside our various charities and projects which Plymouth Soroptimists support this is going to be very interesting year. When it comes to new ideas Plymouth Soroptimists score 10 out of 10! Plymouth Chamber of Commerce to become the voice of business in Devon Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is set to become Plymouth and Devon Chamber of Commerce, providing the opportunity of ‘one voice’ lobbying for Devon businesses. This follows Plymouth Chamber’s successful application to become the accredited Chamber for the whole of the county, as part of the British Chambers of Commerce network. The British Chambers of Commerce network comprises some 52 accredited chambers in the UK, with the majority having county based or city and county based representation. Plymouth Chamber of Commerce applied for Devon accreditation earlier this year, following a strategic review, when the region was advertised by the British Chambers of Commerce. This accreditation status will see Plymouth Chamber’s representation extend to cover the whole of the Devon geographic region, providing ‘one voice’ lobbying for Devon within the British Chambers of Commerce network – something that has never existed before and to provide a larger business community, access to wider offerings. Peter Hartland, chief executive of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce said: ‚“We are delighted to have been successful in our accreditation application. “Our aim with this extended territory representation is to build stronger relationships with our fellow chambers of commerce and business support organisations throughout the region, establishing positive collaborative partnerships, to provide sustainable business support and lobbying for the Devon business community. “Over the coming months we will be working alongside chambers in the region to develop these relationships and reach out to businesses across Devon to provide the one voice that has been missing within the national network. “This will involve lobbying representation and collating business views for the region as a whole, through vehicles such as regional events and the British Chambers of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Survey. “Plymouth remains a critical component of our ongoing activities and our resource and focus will not diminish. “In fact the enlarged accredited geography should provide over time, enhanced networking and event opportunities for our existing business membership. “Additionally, we are now excited to be able to formalise our broader county reach and aspirations and our aim is to build stronger collaborative relationships with our fellow chambers of commerce and business support organisations throughout the region. “As the accredited chamber for Plymouth and Devon, in partnership with our fellow Devon chambers, we hope to greatly enhance the voice of business one voice lobbying, within the third largest county in England.‚“ To reflect this change the chamber’s operating name will be rebranded to Plymouth and Devon Chamber of Commerce. Experience

Actions have consequences - and justice is necessary Last month, Kerry and I attended a civic event organised by All Nations Ministry a Christian fellowship made up of Christians from around the world.

makes complete sense from a Christian perspective.

Led by Pastor Osee Ntavuka, a former Rwandan refugee from the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi tribe where over one million men, women and children were murdered, the event hoped to connect Plymouth and Rwanda and foster relationships.

Life is extremely messy and complicated and the Book of Ecclesiastes, a book of Philosophy within the Old Testament of the Bible, clearly has a lot to say about man’s journey in life and relationship with God.

We fail and fall, actions have consequences, justice is necessary. Thus says Anthony Billington in his blog from the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity.

The Christian faith celebrates the ‘Personification of God through the Person of Jesus Christ who as the Son of God, became human.’ This is what the theologians call the Incarnation.

It was a ceremony to place a memorial stone in the ‘Peace Garden’ on the Hoe so that many who pass by can remember the truth of those evil days in Rwanda. Forgiveness was a major testimony at this event for those who shared their personal story of the dreadful circumstances they experienced through man’s inhumanity to man.

Nobody can teach the world better than Jesus Christ on the subject of forgiveness since the subject of forgiveness is one of the major principles of building a life in a world of chaos. The Cross is the eternal expression of this Truth.

‘Blame is just a lazy person’s way of making sense of chaos.’ So says Janet Drummond, the matriarch of Douglas Coupland’s novel, All Families are Psychotic. ‘It’s nobody’s fault. It’s chaos. Just chaos. Random numbers popping up in a cosmic Lotto draw.’ And yet, issues of blame – and requisite justice – will not go away. In spite of more than a million people signing a petition calling for his return, Jeremy Clarkson’s BBC contract will not be renewed following his ‘physical and verbal attack’ on a Top Gear producer. Lufthansa has confirmed that insurers have set aside 300m euros to cover claims following allegations that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed their Germanwings plane en route from Barcelona to Düsseldorf, killing all 150 people on board.

Nelson Mandela changed South Africa through the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness takes courage and conviction. It doesn’t forget the evil done. Only God has the capacity in His infinite love to do that for us, but true forgiveness is built on the conviction of love for our neighbours and hope in a better world. Both this one and the world to come. Cathedral prompted a backlash of accusations that a detestable tyrant was being treated like a saint.

It is hard to walk in forgiveness for the big issues of life unless we experience and practice forgiveness in the little issues.

Road rage; a hurtful remark from family, friends and strangers, Jesus Christ has the spiritual power and authority to so heal us deep within our souls, heal our emotions and give us a good life that although we walk Italy’s highest court has acquitted Amanda Knox and through massive difficulties Raffaele Sollecito for the murder of in a toxic world we can all Meredith Kercher in 2007, leaving Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. Topping out ceremony at new West Park school A special topping out ceremony took place in April to mark the progress of the £5.3million redevelopment of Knowle Primary in Plymouth. Wilmott Dixon started construction at the site in Ringmore Way, West Park to transform learning facilities in Honicknowle and over the coming months, the buildings will be fitted and kitted out so the new school is fully operational for the autumn school term in October 2015.

The school is being completely re-built after the City Council decided that it would be cheaper, more efficient and better for pupils and staff to demolish the existing 1950s building and replace it with a purpose-built school, which would include a nursery. The new school will be a two-form entry 60 places (two classes per year) with a capacity of 420 pupils, plus early year’s childcare for under-fives. Head teacher Judy Milford said: “As a school we are really excited about this fantastic new building, as it will allow us to further develop the educational

opportunities for our children, families and the local community. This new building will offer us the learning environment to enable us to achieve our vision of becoming an outstanding school.” Knowle primary along with, St Mathews CoE in Derriford is Part of a £15.3 million project as part of the council’s Basic Need programme, designed to ensure there are sufficient places for Plymouth’s growing population of school-aged children. Judith Harwood, assistant director Learning and Communities said: “We are very proud of our schools and investing

in their future is essential. We know that good schools lead to higher educational attainment which in turn leads to better life chances. “It is important to us that the quality of schools throughout the city is such that no matter where a child lives, they will have access to a good school.” The existing Knowle Primary is staying open while the new school is being built. When it is completed in October the old school buildings will be demolished to make way for new sports and recreational areas.

The Plymouth Sound team pictured at the station’s launch 40 years ago

Plymouth Sound reunion The stars of the airways and those that kept them on the air are being sought as former staff of a city radio station prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its first ever broadcast. On May 19 1975, to the strains of Cat Stevens’ Morning Has Broken, Plymouth Sound started broadcasting from studios in a former organ factory at Earl’s Acre in the city. The creation of a dedicated radio station for Plymouth was driven by the radio pioneer Bob Hussell, the station’s first managing director. Plymouth Sound was one of the earliest Independent local radio stations in the UK and the first to begin broadcasting in the West Country, before Exeter’s Devon Air and BBC Radio Devon. Over the years the station built up a loyal listenership in the city and surrounding areas and during its time on-air saw many city milestones – sailors returning from the Falklands War, the Dingles fire, the Eclipse of 1999 and the dawn of the new Millennium. In 2009 the station was re-branded as Heart Plymouth.

It was amalgamated into Heart Devon in 2010 and broadcasting was moved to Exeter.

Now former employees of Plymouth Sound want to get together to unofficially celebrate the station with a special evening reunion to be held in the city in May and are calling for anyone who worked at the station from 1975 until 2009 to get in touch. They are being encouraged to share their photographs and memories of being part of the city institution on a special anniversary website. They are also looking to find a very special person who played a big role in the first day’s broadcast. The cries of the ‘Plymouth Sound Baby’ - the first baby born in the city on 19 May 1975 – were heard during the very first programme. Matthew Miller was born at 4.50am at Freedom Fields Hospital to mum Marlene Miller, weighing in at 7lbs 13oz. The organisers of the reunion are keen to hear from him to make sure he is there to celebrate on the night. Based at City College Plymouth’s Piquet Barracks site in Devonport, the Centre offers specialist marine training for apprentices and students aged 16 - 18 undertaking full-time courses in marine engineering and other nautical related programmes at the College. The new Centre is dedicated to supporting the future workforce for this priority growth sector for the city with expert training and hands-on workshops. Supported by Princess Yachts International plc, the Centre boasts stateof-the-art equipment, including a caterpillar marine diesel engine previously donated to the college by the marine company. The engine, which weighs over 2.5 tonnes and is worth over £15,000, has been used by college engineering students to enhance their hands-on training, many of whom are apprentices with Princess Yachts. The students have been able to dismantle and reassemble the engine, learning about the intricate workings which help it to power a luxury yacht. Chris Gates, managing director at Princess Yachts International plc, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this new marine training Centre. We’ve had a strong relationship with City College Plymouth over the years and are glad to be working with them to help support the training and employment of the city’s young people in the marine sector.” City College Plymouth and Princess Yachts enjoy a close working partnership. endorsement scheme for five years, playing a key role in curriculum development in marine related courses at the College. Princess Yachts’ apprentices also start their career at City College Plymouth and will now be taught in the new marine training centre. Phil Davies, principal and chief executive at City College Plymouth, said: “This new Centre signifies the growing strength of the marine industry in the city and the ever strong partnership between the college and Princess Yachts. The marine sector is a priority growth sector for Plymouth and it is crucial that the college meets the training needs of this sector, training young people, apprentices and employed people who work within the marine industry. “With South Yard recently being declared an enterprise zone, this centre will help meet the needs of new investors looking to employ the best trained workforce for the development of their marine businesses.” The launch event of the new training centre was attended by representatives from City College and Princess Yachts, alongside Princess Yachts’ apprentices. Visitors were treated to a tour of the new centre before it was officially opened by Chris Gates at a special launch ceremony.

Serving up school meals Best G&S in the west! - in a co-operative way! Plymouth’s Gilbert & Sullivan Fellowship has won a top regional award for its production of The Yeomen of the Guard last year.

The fellowship won the Allan Brooking Cup for best Gilbert and Sullivan production at the Noda South West Awards. Other nominees for this prestigious award were Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Society (The Gondoliers), Cirencester Operatic Society (Patience) and Cotswold Savoyards (The Mikado).

Plymouth Gilbert & Sullivan are currently rehearsing Georges Bizet’s ‘Carmen’, the most popular opera of all time, which comes to Plymouth in May. It will be an exciting production, sung in a new English translation, at the Devonport Playhouse from Tuesday May 19 to Saturday May 23. CATERed staff at the end of a busy lunchtime at Hyde Park Infant School

A new co-operative set up to serve almost 2.5 million meals to Plymouth schoolchildren each year is believed to be one of the first in the UK.

Students and staff at St Boniface’s Catholic College in Manadon Park can now borrow books from their library and download them to their portable devices.

The newly formed local authority trading co-operative company called CATERed is 49 per cent owned by schools and 51 per cent by the council. It brings together the pooled budgets of 61 Plymouth primary schools, five special schools and one alternative complementary education service. Decisions about the school meals service will be taken by a co-operative joint partnership board of elected representatives from the schools and the Council.

The eBook lending facility is provided by Plymouth Library Service to Schools and allows the borrowing of digital versions of their favourite books directly to their tablet, laptop or mobile device.

CATERed currently serves more than 12,000 meals every day to children in Plymouth with 86 per cent of the menu made fresh from scratch every single day. Central to the fresh preparation and cooking of the meals is the use of local, fresh, seasonal and organic ingredients which are sourced wherever possible from within the region. The use of high quality, local ingredients ensures that CATERed also supports local growers and farmers and the regional economy. The move follows the government’s decision in April 2013 to hand budgets for school meals, once held centrally by councils, to individual schools which created the situation where some schools did not have sufficient funds to be able to afford to maintain the provision and that potentially they would not be able to continue to offer hot lunches for city children. The new co-operative guarantees all children and young people in Plymouth continue to get great tasting, freshly prepared hot meals at lunchtime. Liz Hill, head teacher at Hyde Park Infants School said: “As individual schools we recognised that ensuring all of our pupils were able to have great tasting school meals was essential not only for their health and well-being but also their learning. Working with Brad and his team and the council we know that pooling and sharing our

budgets in this unique and innovative way achieves economies of scale and efficiencies. This means our school food services have a great future and can grow and develop.” Brad Pearce, managing director of CATERed said: “The new co-operative formed by Plymouth schools and the council is an innovative way of ensuring that more Plymouth children have access to high quality and nutritious school meals. Good school meals are hugely important both to children’s education and their health and wellbeing and CATERed is well set to build on the high standards already set by the Council’s award winning school meals service.”

Encouraging boys to read is an ongoing challenge for parents and schools alike, one that school librarian Juliet Hill knows all too well. “There is a perception amongst boys that reading isn’t cool – so by offering this new

service, my hope is that they will rediscover the joys of reading.” The school library is offering targeted reading interventions with groups of students to develop literacy skills and reading for pleasure. Year 8 student Lewis

Scoble likes the new scheme. He said: “We spend 30 minutes every day reading silently across our lessons. Now I can use my phone to read my favourite books.” GCSE and A-level students are able to access a range of

supporting texts for their subjects, as well as annotated versions to support their learning further. Students can login to downlaod their books from: http://plymouthlss. wheelers.co

Local motorcycle group Plymouth Chapter UK, who form part of the worldwide Harley Owners Group were treated to a talk recently from Tony Cannon of Devon Air Ambulance Trust on the role of the trust, its finances and funding as well as details about future plans for the service. The presentation was organised as part of the Chapter’s social nights programme, after its membership voted to support both Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust as their official charities for 2015. The Chapter nominated to support both charities as they play a vital role in assisting the biker community and those Harley members who may need their valuable and

efficient services in times of emergency. Tony Cannon from Devon Air Ambulance said: “The support that we receive from Plymouth Chapter will help us continue to maintain a service, where each flight costs £2,300 and where we need to generate £5.5 million pounds a year. “Since Devon Air Ambulance started in 1992, we have flown nearly 22,000 missions with road traffic accidents accounting for nearly a third of the flights flown. We are also grateful for the support of the Chapter, as funds raised will help us expand into flying night time missions for the very first time later this year.” The chapter has also organised a ride out in May to Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Airbase Headquarters, where they will be given a dedicated tour and be shown the service’s new helicopters.

Films shot in and around Plymouth After my article appeared in the Shopper, a couple of months ago, about David Soul filming in Plymouth, several people wrote to me about other films that had been made in the area. In the 1940s, ‘The Way We Live’ was shot in the city. It was directed by Jill Craigie who later married Michael Foot, whom she’d met while making the film.

There are various interesting scenes showing Plymouth as it was in 1945. Patsy Scantlebury, who lived in St Budeaux, was chosen for the role of Alice after being seen on Plymouth Hoe jitterbugging with an American sailor. At the time, she was just 17. Al Pacino in Revolution which was mainly filmed at Burrator

John Tozer wrote and asked if I remembered anything about the film ‘The Uncle,’ part of which was shot at Whitleigh. The film starred Rupert Davies who was very popular during the 1960s for his role as the tv detective ‘Maigret.’ John wrote: ‘The camera crew stopped outside where we lived and soon drove off toward Aylesbury Crescent with me and two pals cycling behind the car waving our
hands! They then filmed an indoor scene in a house on Taunton Avenue, opposite
the west end of Aylesbury Crescent.’ The Uncle was made in 1965 and Davies played David Morton, the father of a boy, Gus, played by Robert Duncan. The story concerned the boy’s life over one summer. Like many films made in Plymouth, it hasn’t been

There have been many more movies shot in the area over the years such as ‘War Horse,’ ‘We Bought a Zoo’ etc and many people in Plymouth will have fond memories of appearing in them as extras.

Spall recently returned to the area to shoot ‘Mr Turner’ which was partly filmed at Kingsand.

It told the tale of Alice Copperwheat and her family, whose house had been destroyed in the blitz and who were then billeted to Horrabridge before becoming the owners of a brand new pre-fab in the city.

She had previously worked in a post office. Patsy went on to sign a seven year contract with the J Arthur Rank Organization and appeared as an air hostess in the film ‘Blind Goddess’ as Patsy Drake (her stage name).

directed by Tim Burton. A follow up is to be released shortly. Many local people appeared in the background.

With a little help from some readers Derek Tait looks back some of the famous - and not so famous - films that were shot in the Plymouth area. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk

shown much over the years and many people probably won’t have heard of it. In the late 1970s, Tatum O’Neal was in the area shooting ‘International Velvet’ which also starred Christopher Plummer and Anthony Hopkins. Several of the scenes were shot on the beach at Mothecombe. Tatum was interviewed by Westward Television several times and other scenes for the film were also shot at Newton Abbot racecourse. The movie received mixed reviews. Also in the late 1970s, Force 10 From Navarone, starring Harrison Ford, Robert Shaw and Edward Fox, was partly shot in the dockyard. Ford was just finding fame at the time as Han Solo in Star Wars. In 1982, the film ‘Remembrance’ was released. It featured the story of a group of Royal Naval ratings based at Devonport and their exploits in Plymouth before setting sail for America. Much of the film was shot in Union Street and featured Timothy Spall, Gary Oldman and John Altman as well as many other stars who have since become far more famous. Timothy

Remembrance was shown on Channel 4 soon after but, again, hasn’t been shown much since. It’s good to watch it just to see how Union Street once looked and how it’s all changed over the years. In 1985, Goldcrest advertised in the local papers for extras to appear in their film ‘Revolution’ which was shot mainly at Burrator and starred Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland, Nastassja Kinski and a host of other well-known stars. I went to the auditions at Ballard House but didn’t get a part. If I remember rightly, they were paying £20 a day which seemed a lot back then. Even with a huge budget and many big names, the film was again a flop but can be seen regularly on one of the Freeview channels. In 1994, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was shot at Saltram and starred Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant in a lavish period drama.

Of course, there have also been endless tv shows shot in the area and these include Doctor Who, Hornblower, Casualty and, more recently across the Tamar, Poldark. Perhaps people reading this article have appeared in one of the many productions mentioned? It would be good to feature their memories in a later article.

The cast of the 1982 film Remembrance which followed a group of naval ratings based at Devonport and their exploits in Plymouth

‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997), starring Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, featured an action shot, again, in Devonport Dockyard as well as scenes filmed on several naval ships. In 2009, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was shot partly at Antony House and starred Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway and was

Student Ellie’s professional polish public facing side of the beauty therapy course which brought Ellie to her tutors’ notice and earned her the award.

City College Plymouth has recognised a student who is a cut above at their Student of the Term awards. Ellie McKittrick, 18, from Roborough, studies beauty therapy at the college and works in the commercial hair and day spa, Stars. The salon, based at the college’s Kings Road campus, offers a full range of hair and beauty treatments and gives students the opportunity to get firsthand experience of a real life working environment while they study. It is her success working in this

Ellie’s tutor, Hayley Clarke, who nominated her for the award, said: “Ellie is a consummate professional: always immaculately turned out and providing treatments of the highest standard. She has particularly impressed with her professionalism when dealing with challenging clients. She handles these situations with ease and a maturity beyond her years. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Ellie.”

Ellie receives her award from college principal Phil Davies

The Student of the Term scheme recognises and rewards students who are making a positive contribution to their course, the college or the local community over and above what is expected. There is an overall winner for each of the college’s curriculum areas, and these are all put forward for three further, special awards: the Principal’s Award, the Governors’ Award and the Students’ Union Award. Ellie received a certificate and a prize from Phil Davies, college principal & chief executive, at the ceremony held in the College’s PL1 Restaurant. The event was attended by the Student of the Term winners and their families, as well as their nominating tutors, senior members of college staff and college Governors. Phil Davies said: “These awards recognise students who have taken on the values of our College. Ellie has demonstrated a professionalism, technical ability and enterprising attitude which show she is ready to compete in the world of work. Ellie is also a great ambassador for the college. She has represented the College’s Hair and Beauty department at numerous events both at the college and off-site, providing beauty treatments to the public. She is a credit to her college and her profession.”

‘Inspiring’ helicopter visit causes career day buzz at Stoke Damerel It’s not every day a £40m aircraft lands on the school field but a helicopter from 673 Squadron Army Air Corps did just that as part of Stoke Damerel Community College’s Year 10 Careers Convention. The Apache attack helicopter made a 90-minute stop at the college as part of a training sortie and the two crew, Jan Ferraro and Major Antony Thompson, spoke to Engineering students about the aircraft and careers in Army aviation. “We were on a training operation in the Dartmoor area so we thought we’d pop in and speak to the students about life as a pilot and answer their questions about Army aviation,” said Mr Ferraro, who is a civilian trainer with Inzpire working with 673 Squadron at Middle Wallop in Wiltshire. His Army colleague Major Thompson piloted the aircraft on to the field, more usually used for football and rugby

matches, in front of a crowd of students and staff. “Your students were very inquisitive and asked some good questions about the helicopter’s capability, you definitely have some budding engineers here,” said Major Thompson. “It’s a pretty unusual thing to happen at school,” said Year 10 Engineering student George Penney. “I asked lots of questions and the visit has really inspired me to think about a career in aviation.” Representatives of 11 different employment sectors took part in the event at the College in March - from Devon and Cornwall Police’s media services manager to a team supervisor from the Highways Agency. Christine Parker, the college’s careers co-ordinator, said the convention - which saw 240 students attend workshops highlighting a variety of careers - had been a ‘great success’. “Here at Stoke Damerel Community College we are always thinking of new ways to bring careers to life for our students,” said Mrs Parker. “It was quite a spectacle and hugely exciting to see the helicopter land and it was wonderful for our students to be able to find out more about employment opportunities in the forces firsthand. “We have had 11 career sectors represented today by more than 30 visitors who have kindly given their time to talk to our students about just some of the options available to them once they leave school.
