A major campaign to encourage people of all ages to have a free flu jab has been launched in Plymouth. Residents aged over 65, pregnant women and children in school years 1, 2 and 3 are among thousands being targeted in the high profile campaign. To kick off the campaign in Plymouth, Dr Ruth Harrell, the city’s new Interim Director of Public Health, and Councillor Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, have both had their flu jabs and published a video of them talking about the importance of having flu jabs. Councillor Bowyer said: “It is vitally important that anyone who is eligible for the flu vaccination has it every year as the vaccine protects against different strains of flu which can change each year. “If you’re over 65, or if you are pregnant,

or if you have a long term condition, it is really important to get yourself protected. It is also very important that carers get themselves vaccinated also, both to look after themselves and to protect those who they care for.” Dr Harrell said: “I have the flu vaccine every year without fail, as I have a long term condition, and I want to make sure that I am protected against flu. “As well as the injection for adults in all these affected groups, there is now a nasal spray available for children. “Flu can be really horrible for young children and they can spread it around the family, but a simple nasal spray can protect them.

ACTION PLAN TO TACKLE CHILD POVERTY A new three-year action plan has been agreed by Plymouth City Council to tackle child poverty in the city. The Plan for Child Poverty 2016 – 2019 will look at four priorities and will build on the work done since 2012 to tackle child poverty in the city. The focus of the Plan for Child Poverty 2016-2019 will be on the following four key areas: Supporting families on low income – we will support families on low incomes to find their way out of poverty Narrowing the gap in attainment – reducing the attainment gap at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4 and ensuring more children are able to read and write Support for Parents – help for parents at risk of poverty to be more engaged with their children’s learning, access better mental health support, and obtaining better qualifications themselves to gain more sustainable employment Poor Dental health – a commitment that by 2019 the dental health of children aged under 16 in Plymouth will be improved – with a reduction in the number of children who have had teeth removed. In deprived areas, 55% of

children experience tooth decay The Plan was presented to the Council’s Cabinet by Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, and Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People. Councillor Downie said: “In Plymouth, 11,500 children and young people live in poverty, which is the equivalent of 1 in 5 children and is higher than the regional and national average. People living in poverty are more likely to experience ill health and violence as well, something I have first-hand experience of dealing with due to my former work as a youth worker in Plymouth. “The new plan aims to provide a renewed focus for where the city’s attention and resources should be directed to ensure that we have the most impact on our most vulnerable families who are most likely to be experiencing poverty.” Councillor Beer, who has also been on the council’s Cross-Party Child Poverty Advisory Group since 2012, added: “Last year, when we started to develop the new three year plan we looked at some of the achievements of the last plan, which I contributed to which included; developing a skills plan, reduction on fuel poverty, increasing the uptake of free education places,

embedding poverty outcomes as part of the future outcomes for children centres and improving housing standards. “Other changes as a result of the last plan include enabling neighbourhoods to change and self-manage their own neighbourhoods and future. I would like to pay tribute to the successes of the work of the previous plan, which have laid the foundations for the development of our new plan.” Councillor Chris Penberthy, Shadow Cabinet Member for Cooperatives and Housing, said: “Since I first introduced a council debate on child poverty in 2012 we have worked hard across party to look at how we can mitigate the impact of poverty in children now and seek to reduce the number of children who will live in poverty in the future. “I am pleased with the work that the council has done to date, the partnerships that are developing and the engagement we have had in producing this new action plan. Ultimately we need every individual, community group, business and institution in the city to work together to ensure that none of our children grow up in poverty – if you would like to get involved in working with us on this, please get in touch.”

Memory Walk set to raise £80,000

Local broadcaster Judi Spiers joined more than 1,300 people who put on their walking shoes to join the fight against dementia at Alzheimer’s Society Plymouth Memory Walk in October. People gathered in the sunshine on Plymouth Hoe where they took part in an energetic Zumba session before embarking on the fundraising walk launched by Judi who cut the ribbon and led walkers on their way. Judi said: “It’s wonderful to see so many people coming together with one aim – to support people with dementia, hoping that one day we will find a cure and create a world without dementia. “I know first-hand how devastating dementia can be. That’s why I’m proud to be here supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk and doing my bit to help the fight against dementia.” Oliver Colvile MP greeted walkers and presented participants with their medals on completion of the walk.Councillors Ian and Lynda Bowyer were also in attendance and took part in the walk. Lauren McCready, 22, from Truro, is studying to be a nurse at Plymouth University. She took part in Plymouth Memory Walk with her friend Zena and her sister, Lucy,

in memory of her grandmother Mary who had vascular dementia. Lauren’s grandmother inspired her to pursue a career in nursing. She said: “She’s my inspiration for what I do today, and where I want to be in the future. She inspired me to take on a nursing degree so that I can fully support people with dementia and their families. “No one should feel alone when dealing with dementia, there is always support out there. I really enjoyed taking part in the Memory Walk in memory of my grandmother. It was fantastic and incredible to be surrounded by so many people all walking for the same reason.” Alzheimer’s Society provides a range of support services across Devon for people living with dementia, including the Devon Dementia Support Service, Singing for the Brain music sessions, National Dementia Helpline and

dementia cafes. The charity hopes to raise £80,000 from the event, which will help to support services like these, as well as on-going research to ultimately find a cure. Anne Rollings, Alzheimer’s Society operations manager for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly said: “Plymouth Memory Walk has been a huge success and I would like to thank everyone who took part. There were walkers of all ages and the atmosphere was fantastic. “We have already raised lots of money from the event, with donations still coming in. The money raised from Memory Walk will be used to better support those living with the condition, campaign for a more dementia friendly society and fund vital research to find a cure. Every person, every pound, every step will bring us closer.” To find out more about Memory Walk visit www. memorywalk.org.uk

GENEROUS DONATION BY USBORNE BOOKS Usborne Books have donated £1,100 worth of books to the children’s wards at Derriford Hospital.

Derriford to have some lovely free books to read. Many local businesses donated and I then auctioned these off online, which was a great success.

Following a visit to Level 12 last year to donate £600 worth of books, Vikki Dernham, Usborne Books organiser, decided to continue her fundraising efforts and organised various events to raise enough funds to purchase boxes full of books for all ages, including a bake off cake sale, auctions on social media and a sponsored bike ride.

“I would like to thank everyone that got involved, so many were really supportive and gave generously to help get new books. It is very rewarding to give something to the hospital and I really hope the children will enjoy them.”

Vikki said: “As part of my role, one of the things we can offer schools and organisations linked with children is free books. These can be gained by fundraising events to raise the funds and then Usborne will add a percentage of additional free books, depending on the amount raised. I thought it would be great for the children staying at

Sam Cartwright, Play Specialist, said: “I would like to thank Vikki and everyone who was involved in the fundraising, it really is a fantastic amount of books! Books are always useful for those children that cannot get out of bed but still want distraction and this range will be extremely popular. We have already had children borrowing them and telling us some of the stories. They have brought a lot of smiles to our patients.”

Congratulations to the winners of the Zuzimo competition in our September edition. Neal Howard of West Park and Julie Taylor of Deer Park each won a meal for four worth £100.

Poppy display for Plymouth Plymouth is to host a wave of the iconic ceramic poppies as part of a major national initiative, 14 -18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has announced it will present Wave by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper at the Plymouth Naval Memorial. From July 15 to November 19 next year the ceramic sculpture, which captivated so many when it was exhibited at the Tower of London, will adorn the Memorial on the Hoe. Plymouth City Council leader Ian Bowyer said: “This is going to be stunning and I’m utterly delighted and honoured that Plymouth has been chosen to host this magnificent and moving memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “It is fitting that this inspiring sculpture comes here. Thousands of Plymouth families have relatives who served and every year I am impressed by the number of people – of all ages – who attend Remembrance Sunday. “For this city there is also the added fact that our Theatre Royal Plymouth played a key part in creating this incredible installation at the Tower of London. The poppies are coming home.” The theatre manufactured and constructed the framework for the sculpture before transporting them to London, in secret. Staff from the theatre also helped create the installation made up of 888,246 ceramic poppies. Victoria Wallace, Commonwealth War Graves Commission director

The Wave poppy display in Yorkshire last year

general said: “In bringing Wave to a Commonwealth War Graves site, so important to the local communities in Devon, and to the Royal Navy as a whole, we honour all war dead, and combine the force of a wonderful artwork with the body that has commemorated so many men and women for nearly a century. We hope people will visit, or see the images, and remember the sacrifice they made.” Jenny Waldman, director of 14-18 NOW, said: “The poppies have captivated millions of people across the UK, and we are delighted to present Wave at the CWGC Plymouth Naval Memorial in 2017 as part of the ongoing tour. Artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper have created two enormously powerful artworks of national significance that continue to inspire all who see them.” The Plymouth Naval Memorial was built and is maintained by the Commission to commemorate almost 7,300 servicemen and women of the First World War who have no known grave. As well as commemorating seamen of the Royal Navy who sailed from Plymouth, the First World War

Wave and Weeping Window are from the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red – an original concept by artist Paul Cummins. with the setting designed by Tom Piper. The poppies were manufactured by Paul Cummins Ceramics Limited in conjunction with Historic Royal Palaces. The installation was originally at the Tower of London from August to November 2014 where 888,246 poppies were displayed, one to honour every death in the British and Colonial forces of the First World War. The two poppy sculptures being presented across the UK, together totaling over 10,000 poppies, have been saved for the nation by the Backstage Trust and the Clore Duffield Foundation, and gifted to 14-18 NOW and Imperial War Museums. Financial support for the presentations has been received from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and fundraising for the presentations is ongoing.

Another donation of a sleeping bag...

Public respond to appeal for donations for the homeless A Plymouth charity says it is has been overwhelmed with the public’s generosity following a plea for unwanted sleeping bags and blankets for the homeless.

Plymouth Soup Run last month made a desperate appeal for donations before winter arrives, after supplies ran out. 223130

After hearing of their plight, Cornish energy firm Total Energy Solutions immediately donated three brand new sleeping bags to help kick-start donations. Since then, Plymouth Soup Run has received more than 40 sleeping bags and 35 blankets. They will now be handed out to those on the streets to help keep them warm this winter.

“Donations have been from local people, many of them elderly. Blankets were even delivered by bicycle one night. Another man dropped a sleeping bag off at the weekend and stayed with us to help with the washing up!

Do you have any unwanted blankets or sleeping bags to donate? Please contact the Plymouth Soup Run on info@plymouthsouprun.org.uk or log on to www. plymouthsouprun.org.uk

Hilary Knight, spokeswoman for Plymouth Soup Run, said: “The response to the appeal has been overwhelming. The phone has been ringing and emails have been arriving daily. People have been really keen to help.

“It is good to know that with the colder weather approaching we now have a store of blankets and sleeping bags. Hopefully more will be donated and we will not run out as we did a few weeks ago.”

The priority give way feature was replaced with warning signs alerting motorists about the road humps. The signs should ensure vehicles slow down as they approach the new crossing point at the junction of Central Park Avenue and Dale Road. The work took place after a consultation on proposed changes to traffic calming in the area. Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery said: “We are absolutely committed to keeping this city moving which is why I insisted on the need for the traffic island to be reconsidered after receiving a number of complaints from both local residents and motorists alike. “By removing the island and replacing it with warning signs and road markings, we are able to keep the flow of traffic moving without bringing it to a complete stop.” The Plymouth Shopper

Search for Snow Beast Plymouth’s Barbican Theatre and the Scratchworks Theatre Company have joined forces to present an exciting new family show called The Snow Beast.

Appearing at Barbican Theatre on 5 November, The Snow Beast is a new collaboration between critically acclaimed theatre company Scratchworks and award-winning writer Jack Dean, co-produced with Barbican Theatre. It will be a captivating collision of storytelling, an original score and live science experiments that will inspire young audiences to engage with the beauty of the unknown and the magic of the everyday. It’s Christmas time in the snowy Scandinavian town of Seldomberg, which can only mean one thing – the Great Annual Science Fair is here. When Faina, a haphazard, eccentric scientist, discovers her mother’s care home is about to close, she enters the Fair to win the prize money to save it. But her entry falls to pieces and all she’s left with is a tattered old book her mother gave her many years ago - The Snow Beast. Out of desperation, she promises to bring the judges the fabled creature in the

book. They give her three days to do so. With nothing but the book, some test tubes and her grumpy assistant Maude to help her, Faina sets off on an action packed adventure encountering extraordinary spectacles and mountainous obstacles as they battle through the wild, wintry wilderness in search of the truth. Does the Snow beast really exist? Can we separate stories from fact, or do they whirl together like snowflakes in a blizzard? Scratchworks Theatre Company are a physical ensemble of four women who create playful, accessible theatre from scratch; Hanora Kamen, Sian Keen, Laura

Paul’s a chip off the old block! Paul Smith, owner and butcher at The Butchers Block in Stoke Village is proud to have completed a successful year and a half in business in the village, writes Karen Pilkington Paul’s passion for good quality local business is fuelled by several factors. He lives locally, as well as being the landlord of neighbouring pub, the Blockhouse Inn; he remembers how business thrived in the village as he was apprenticed to Dewhurst butchers, who had a vibrant and steady trade in the village back in the 1980s; and along with many local traders he knows that the quality of locally sourced produce bought direct from suppliers in Devon and Cornwall is almost always superior to that found in

supermarkets wrapped in plastic. So as a man who enjoys his meat, especially traditionally cut, he is pleased to offer his customers that which he chooses to put on his own plate. With Cornish rump steak on offer for just £8.99/kilo and cut with ample fat if required, he truly is the meat lovers friend. Paul keeps most of his stock hung in cold storage in the back of the shop. This way he can bring out what is needed and cut to the customers taste. This means that the products he sells are generally fresher – minced on the day or cut to order, as well as having a much shorter journey time to get to the shop. Paul points out that much meat these days comes from South America, making the cost to the environment of his locally sourced and

slaughtered produce – almost entirely in Cornwall – so much less than that which has been mass produced and shipped half way across the world. He also explains that he is able to cost much of his regular stock to compete with the big five supermarkets and sells a popular mix and match on minced steak, boneless pork steaks and chicken breasts meaning a family can sit done to two meals for a fiver. A local butcher also means many little extras for customers who ask. Paul can marinade purchases for customers in over eight different flavours so your meat can soak up herbs and spices nicely while you get around to cooking. He can also provide unusual and hard to get hold of cuts of meat for slow cooking, and good old fashioned dishes using all the cheaper parts of the animal. And he is happy to chat away to his customers to discuss their requirements. You may not see instantly what you are looking for, but there is a very strong chance

that Paul can source it either straight away or within a few days, whether you are looking for large cuts to feed all the relatives at Christmas, or something special for a small intimate affair for just one or two. Paul is also conscious of the drive for humanely farmed produce. All his eggs are genuinely free range and super fresh coming from Warleigh Barton Farm in Tamerton Foliot; and he is taking orders for Free Range bronze Turkeys from a small family farm in Somerset this year. Local shopping depends on all of us changing our habits to habitually visit independent traders. It might take a few minutes longer than picking up a packet from a supermarket counter on a weekly shop, but it is infinitely more enjoyable, more relational, and ultimately more tasty to use local tradespeople. The quality is excellent as well as being competitively priced by artisans who take pride in their work and have a vested interest in delivering the best they possibly can to their local customers.

Compensation claims tumble as Plymouth wins potholes battle Plymouth’s extensive resurfacing programme is paying off as the amount of claims for compensation for pothole damage has dropped by more than £100,000 in a year. Plymouth City Council has spent £5 million this year on an extensive road resurfacing programme. A new report by the RAC Foundation shows that

while in 2014/15 Plymouth City Council received 447 successful claims for compensation with a payout of £123,603, last year this had reduced to 17 successful claims with a payout of £3,673. Councillor Ian Bowyer, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “We welcome the RAC’s announcement that there has been a huge reduction in pay-outs for compensation to motorists who

Accountancy firm celebrates national award A Plymouth firm of accountants is celebrating a national award.

Numbers (UK) Limited entered their first competition in the summer, having been encouraged to do so by a number of their clients. They were delighted to learn last month that their entry had won the ‘Making a Difference’ category in the AVN Accountancy National Awards. AVN is an association of some of the most forwardthinking accountants in the country, and Numbers (UK) Limited have been members for just over three years. The award was given for their efforts in helping a client sell a loss-making part of his business, raising funds to refinance his remaining departments and pay off some personal debt. Steve Carey, managing director, said: “The director received an approach to buy a division of his business, and was initially pleased with the purchase price. However, as the deal unfolded, he became aware that the taxman was going to take a significant part of the proceeds, and getting funds to him personally would have incurred further tax, meaning this ‘once in a career’ deal was not going to deliver the benefits he had first expected.” Steve and his team developed a solution which meant that the client’s team was able to share in the proceeds, and the client was able to retain enough post-tax funds to pay off some personal debt and recapitalise his remaining business. Steve added: “As a result, the client has been able to enjoy time developing a new venture without worrying about how to repay debts incurred in supporting his original business.” “It was a real privilege to be recognised by our peers as a firm that makes a real difference to the lives of its clients. Making Lives Better is at the core of what we do, and to have people we respect think us worthy of that accolade means a lot to us, and our team.”

Community update on Oceansgate development Local people and businesses around Devonport are being invited to hear about latest plans for Oceansgate. A community briefing session will take place on Tuesday October 25 at Devonport Library on Chapel Street which aims to give people who live or work near the site a progress report. The first phase of the development has recently been given planning permission with the work due to start on entrance to Oceansgate early in the New Year. The first phase includes offices and two rows of industrial units at the entrance to the Marine Industries Production Campus in the former South Yard. The former MOD yard is being opened up to private businesses and under the City Deal will become a hub for marine companies, providing workshops, offices and laboratory space for engineering, manufacturing and research. It will have up to 16,000m2 of flexible employment space with deep water docks and jetties suitable for the marine and advanced manufacturing sector. Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “We’re really excited about Oceansgate and the opportunities it opens up for local people and businesses.

“We think it’s important to talk directly to those who are closest to this development, so they can see what’s going on and talk to the project team about how this will affect them.” Over the coming weeks for instance, initial infrastructure work will get underway. Contractors will start work on the sewage system, connecting new drains with the existing network. The event will run from 3pm until 7pm so that people can pop in after school, college or work. 8

Spot the wildlife walk in Ford Park

The popular exhibition ‘Nature in Ford Park’ continues until Sunday November 20, and is open for public viewing every Tuesday and Thursday from 10.30am to 3.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 12.30pm to 3.30pm. An autumn Wildlife Walk led by John Boon will take place on Saturday November 12, meeting outside the Visitor Centre at 10am. November is a great time for birds in Ford park with opportunities to see wintering Redwings and Mistle Thrushes which love to feed on the abundant hawthorn and yew berries. This in turn can attract hunting Sparrowhawks. Also at this time of year the cemetery is one of the most reliable places to see Redstarts as well as more common bird species, such as Buzzards, Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Meadow Pipits. Suitable footwear is recommended. Refreshments will be available after the walk at the Visitor Centre cafe, which also gives you the opportunity to view the exhibition.

New £4.2 million sports school at Marjons nears completion Students at Plymouth Studio School have been getting a sneak preview of the Science Laboratory in their new £4.2 million building on-site at the University of St Mark & St John. Students at the specialist sports academy school, which opened in September 2015, are due to move into the new building in November. The fully equipped, modern science laboratory will be used by Year 10-13 students studying for their GCSEs and A levels in science subjects. A state-of the art Sports Science Laboratory, using the latest in sports monitoring and research equipment, and a High Performance Sports Centre

are also in the building. They will be used as part of the school’s unique Sports Performance and Development Programme. Plymouth Studio School is for 14 to 19 year olds looking to combine their academic studies with their own sporting ambitions, or to get a head-start in careers in sport such as coaching, sports therapy and physiotherapy, or sports science. Students joining this year include Plymouth’s budding young diving stars, Matt Dixon and Cody Powell-Tuckett and upcoming Taekwondo star, Rhys Roffey, who recently attended the Olympic Team GB talent assessment camp. Head of sports performance and strategy, Jon Rhodes said: “For students looking for a career in areas like sports

LAUNCH OF PLYMOUTH’S NEWEST CHOIR Plymouth is warming up its vocal chords for the launch of a brand new community choir.

North Prospect is about to become the home of a vibrant new choir, which is welcoming members of all ages and backgrounds from across Plymouth. North Prospect Community Choir, launching on November 7 at The Beacon Community Hub, is already creating a buzz around the city.
The founder and musical director, 29-year-old Emma Higgs, said: “The choir will be non-auditioned, with a focus on relationships and fun. We want anyone to

be able to take part, whether they think they can sing or not!”
She went on to say of her local area: “I love the sense of hope and community spirit in North Prospect. The Beacon Hub is the ideal place to host an exciting new venture like this.”
After the launch, the choir will perform at the North Prospect Christmas Festival on Mon December 19 at 4pm, also at the Beacon. Anyone aged 11 or over is welcome to join the choir. For more information visit www.northprospectcommunitychoir.org.uk or call 07596354073.

science and sports therapy, having a good grounding in science subjects is fundamental. “We also have students who are competing at an international sporting level but want to pursue alternative careers in areas such as medicine, so offering a great mix of academic and sporting facilities in one place is critical.” In addition to the state-of-the-art equipment in the new school building, students also have access to the worldclass sports facilities on-site at the University of St Mark & St John, ranked 4th best in the UK and accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Those interested in joining the school in Year 10 or 12 in September 2017, can take their own tour of the building on October 27 at 5 pm.

The on-line deadline for Year 10 applications is October 31 and there are only 50 places available. The Year 12 Open Evening is on November 30. To register for the tour or events, visit www.plymouthstudioschool.co.uk

Yarn storming event brightens up the day Churches working together Recently the churches of Stoke and Devonport got together for another of their regular joint services and pictured here are some of the people who were there.

from any kind of depressive illness, there is a depression support group at St Michael’s Church from 11am.

But the churches are keen to make a real difference in the local community as well, and there is now a well-established pattern of activities.

And for those who are less active nowadays, you can go to St Aubyn’s (in Devonport Library) at 10.30am for seated dancing.

On Mondays there is a lunch club from 12 noon at the Salvation Army in Morice Town for those looking for a meal and company.

On Wednesdays if you need to help getting into work, the work club is there for you from 9am at Devonport Library

For those who are struggling with issues around dementia, there is a Memory Café at Stoke Christian Centre every second and fourth Monday of the month at 2pm.

To find out more information about these activities and anything else to do with the local churches, check out their Facebook page: Churches Together in Devonport and Stoke.

For refugees and asylum seekers Stoke Damerel church offers lunch and English lessons at the ‘About Time’ group from 12 noon.

When the days begin to get shorter and slightly less colourful you have several options. One might be to paint the town red. Now there’s a newer and less permanent choice as well, writes Roy Perring. It’s called Yarn Storming and it’s what happened recently in George Street, Devonport. When a community is Yarn Stormed they can wake up finding their street furniture has been covered in wool. The team organising the George Street event decided that not everyone might want to knit, so they let the various participating groups decide themselves how they wanted to decorate their item. Not content with decorating bollards and post boxes the team also arranged for an afternoon of activity involving local schools. There was music from Devonport High School for Boys, song and dance from St.Joseph’s Primary School with much more besides. Royal Marine Vehicles from Number One Assault Group, who are based nearby at Tamar, were very popular with schoolchildren and Royal Naval heritage activities also drew crowds. Many other community groups got involved including the Salvation Army, Plymouth Pride and the Green Ark children’s centre. A unique ‘colour me in’ canvas reminiscent of the opening credits of ‘Rainbow’ allowed everyone visiting to add some colour and take part.

The Plymouth Shopper

Opening the event, Graham Little, the police engagement officer spoke about how the event came to take place. After the tragic fire in nearby Clowance Street flats in June

St Joseph’s School lead the song and dance

2015, there were a huge amount of donations from across Plymouth. After the immediate needs of the families affected by the fire were met, a community pop up shop was opened to distribute the remaining goods. The idea for the days events came about during a conversation between the shop’s volunteers at the Devonport Live cafe. Devonport Timebank members formed the core group of volunteers. The shop had become a hub in which local people could pop in and find out about groups, activities, support agencies and make new friends. Visitors wanted this ethos to continue and to grow. They liked having a sense of community at their end of Devonport which was something that had been lacking in the past.

Above: working on the big painting. Below: Penny Armstead with Yarn Stormed table top

Timebankers wanted to help the community take a greater sense of pride and ownership in their corner of Devonport. Penny Armstead a Timebank South West Outreach Worker, helped and guided the volunteers as they set up their groups and found funding. The Yarn Storming day was one of several events that took place around the area including a Yarn Storming class at Hamoaze House and the opportunity to set up an online craft shop with the help of Rachel Wickett which was held at Devonport Guildhall.

School children get lesson in site safety Hundreds of children from High Street Primary School in Stonehouse got a visit from safety mascot, Ivor Goodsite, as part of a series of community engagement activities run by Mispace, part of the Midas Group. The visit was organised by Mi-space, who have been contracted by Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) to carry out renovations on their properties in High Street and Waterloo Close, situated next door to the school. Work has already begun and includes replacement windows, overcladding, new communal doors, renewed boundary railings and revamped balconies. The internal staircases will also be plastered and decorated. With scaffolding surrounding the flats, and works continuing until February, staff from Mi-space as well as Ivor visited the school to deliver positive safety messages to children that live in and around the flats. Children learnt what construction signs mean, how dangerous sites can be, what equipment workers need to be wearing to

keep safe, and the importance of keeping away from scaffolding.

Ivor invited the children to take part in a site safety poster competition with the winning designs getting blown up and displayed at the site. Sarah French, area manager south, from Plymouth Community Homes judged the posters and chose designs from Kaleigh Bassett, Year 4, and Jessica Nastaj, Year 2 as the winners. They were both presented with a £15 voucher to spend at Toys R Us. Shane Jones, operational manager for Asset Management at Mi-space, said: “Refurbing residential properties is exciting, yet can be disrupting for those living there. “For children it may even look like a temporary playground and we have a responsibility to ensure that everyone understands the dangers and stays safe.

“This is why we have introduced Sarah French, area manager south (PCH), Ivor Goodsite, Lisa Ivor Goodsite and the poster Saunders, senior tenant liaison officer at Mi-Space and Sarah Whitehead, tenant liaison officer with children from the High Street competition to High Street flats showcasing the winning posters from the competition Primary.”

Neighbourly action from Stoke traders Instead of turning a blind eye, local traders rushed to help recently after witnessing the vandalism of some of the planters in Stoke Village. Within a very short period of time, and with a wonderful response from local businesses and residents, the planters were fully restored, replanted and tidied. This just goes to show the determination for community spirit in the village is alive and well, spurred on by the consistent efforts of groups like Stoke STARS. The STARS and Friends of Blockhouse Park have successfully helped raise £22,000 to fund the recent improvements to the children’s play area, as well as up and coming bug hotels, wild flower meadow planting and more fruit trees in the existing wilder parts of the park. They have contributed £2000 to fund a feasibility study to begin the process of making major improvements to the parks amenities, including knocking down the toilet block and relocating into a purpose built modern building that would become the new home of the community centre, complete with state of the art heating, and a café with seating to enjoy the magnificent views without being buffeted by the weather.

By Karen Pilkington They have also been lobbying the local councillors extensively on behalf of all the residents and users of Stoke Village to ensure adequate rubbish collecting facilities – no easy affair in times of local government spending cuts. However Sam Davey, local councillor who regularly attends the Stoke STARS monthly meetings, confirmed ‘The new bins are going in very very soon’ much to the relief of many local people reading this! Stoke STARS are also asking local people and anyone who has an interest in the Blockhouse Park to visit survey monkey to give their views on how the park is used presently and what they would like to see in the future. This information will be used to form the basis of the studies that are currently being conducted on the future of the park to ensure that local wishes are paramount. The survey can be found online at www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/XJDYSZX In order to increase fund raising the STARS will be holding a fantastic Christmas event on December 3.

Starting at 4pm in the Community Centre there will be stalls and refreshments and a visit from Father Christmas, as well as local choirs and mummers. The jollities will spill out into Stoke Village with a procession of carol singers hoping to amuse and delight, and perhaps enjoy the odd glass or two of something warming! It is hoped that many of the local traders will open late so that local people can buy their Christmas presents in a festive atmosphere without having to brave the crowds in the city centre, and, no doubt, have a drink or two themselves. The festivities will end with live music in the Stoke Inn at 9pm and the drawing of the raffle winners at 10pm. All are welcome not just to what should be a great event for the community in the run up to Christmas, but also to the regular meetings of the traders and residents. October saw 26 people get together which shows what a good turn out there is already. The next meeting is at 6.30pm on Tuesday November 8 in the back room of the Stoke Inn. Please have a look at their Facebook page for more information and to get better connected www.facebook.com/groups/StokeStars/

Students take CPR training to heart More than 300 students learned lifesaving CPR techniques in one day at a Plymouth secondary school as part of the British Heart Foundation initiative Restart A Heart. The BHF says that if you suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK, you have less than a one in ten chance of surviving so the aim of Restart A Heart Day on 18 October was to train as many young people as possible in CPR techniques. At Stoke Damerel Community College Sherri Mann, the college’s first aider, ran CPR sessions throughout the day. She applied to receive a CPR training kit from the BHF and the college now has 35 manikins for students to practice on. “We were thrilled to get the grant from the BHF,” said Mrs Mann. “It was quite a challenge to train so many

“Our young people certainly appreciated how important the training was and are proud to be part of a nation of lifesavers.”

Martyn Cox - headteacher of Scott Medical and Healthcare College which Stoke Damerel is sponsoring was one of a group of staff to also receive the training.

“Stoke Damerel has sponsored our school - which is for 14 to 19-year-olds - to deepen and embed healthcare and prepare young people for much-needed healthcare jobs.” Year 8 student Stella Hancock was one of the students to receive the training and later appeared on BBC Spotlight to demonstrate what she had learned on live television.

“I think it’s really good to have this training,” said Stella, 13. You might come across someone who needs help and the adult might not know what to do about it but the child will,” she said. “I might have felt scared to help if I was with someone who wasn’t breathing but the training has made me confident that I would be able to help and I would know what to do.”

The aim is for all 1,400 students in the college to have been CPR trained by the end of the academic year.

Crownhill Fort placed on ‘at risk’ register Plymouth’s Crownhill Fort has been added to Historic England’s list of buildings at risk.

In its report Historic England noted that Crownhill Fort is the best preserved of Plymouth’s Victorian defences and is owned and managed by the Landmark Trust. It added: “Crownhill Fort’s buildings have been given many new uses to generate income for the structure’s maintenance and upkeep but it was added to the Herit-

age at Risk Register this year because of scrub and tree growth over the very large bank which slopes down from the fort and repairs that are needed to some of the smaller buildings on the site.” Historic England has also reported on the progress of repairs to Mount Batten Tower. Works on the gun tower are almost finished and have included grouting voids in the walls, (which are over three metres thick), repointing, and repairs to the roof. The site was only added to the

register last year due to water leaking through the walls, rotting lintels and falling stone. Historic England and Plymouth City Council have been funding the repairs and the tower is now free of leaks and the stonework and lintels are secure. Mount Batten Tower is on schedule to be removed from the Heritage at Risk register next year. A guard-rail around the parapets is also due to be built paid for by the Coastal Revival Fund. Funding boost for £34 million History Centre Plymouth’s landmark History Centre continues to make waves by reaching the next stage of a major Coastal Communities funding bid. The project has been given the green light to put in a more detailed submission for £2.9 million from this national funding pot that was set up to encourage economic development of the UK’s coastal communities.

spade is even in the ground. Every major funder we’ve approached so far has been enthusiastic about the scale and vision of what we are trying to achieve. “This project is raising the profile of heritage and the arts in Britain’s Ocean City to a new level and a lot of organisations are keen to support it. The city’s historic links and significance never fail to surprise people and our visual arts scene is stronger than ever. We’ll be working hard to pull together a really effective bid and hope the CCF will be as supportive of the project and our aspirations as everyone else has been so far.”

Four men in a Merc take on banger rally challenge

The bid will be formally submitted in December and if successful, the funding will contribute towards the redevelopment of the City Museum and Art Gallery, Central Library and St Luke’s Church buildings into a major visitor attraction that will bring Plymouth’s most significant cultural and heritage assets onto one site.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “There is a lot of work still to do, but even being invited through to the next round is a huge deal.

The project has already been awarded over £15 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £8 million from Plymouth City Council and £128,500 from the Wolfson Foundation. Further bids to Arts Council England and the Clore Foundation are pending and the total cost of the project is expected to be around £34 million.

“It means that another major funding organisation has listened to and is excited by what the History Centre could mean for Plymouth, its residents and the economic opportunities it opens up.

Behind the scenes the History Centre is also moving at pace. The Central Library and St Luke’s Church buildings have been vacated, with the Central Library moved to new premises on Armada Way.

“It means that this project is making waves before a

The City Museum and Art Gallery closed at the beginning of September and is now being decanted. All three buildings are scheduled to be handed over to the building contractors in January so construction work can begin. The History Centre is scheduled to open in spring 2020 as the flagship building for the city’s Mayflower 400 commemorations. Four Plymouth friends dressed as Morris men have raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice by completing the Vegas or Bust 2016 Banger Rally Challenge. The quartet, all members of the Plymouth Round Table, managed to complete the five-day challenge with just half an hour to spare – despite their £500 Mercedes ‘banger’ breaking down on the penultimate day and having to resort to a hire car to cross the finish line. The rally began in St Austell on October 6 where the liveried cars set off for Plymouth to catch the Roscoffbound ferry. At the other side, teams had to decipher quiz

questions to map out their route, eventually ending up in Vegas, La Manga, south of Alicante 1,500 miles away. Dave, who is director and founder of Plymouth-based motion graphics design company Pushed, said: “It was fantastic but very tiring. It was a bit like being at work because we had to be creative with the challenges in order to collect the most points.” Evenings were spent swotting up for the next day’s tasks and learning Morris dances to the Captain Pugwash theme-tune, because it was the only accordion music they could access at the time. “Rather than just take photographs at the check-in points we decided to be a bit more artistic and film ourselves dancing a routine to win more points. We even drew crowds so we were able to pull out our hats and collect even more money for charity,” added Dave. During the trip, the team also won a special award for Best Team Spirit. “That was great because that’s what the whole event is all about,” added Dave. But it wasn’t all plain sailing. With just one day to go a wheel bearing went outside the town of Zaragoza, Spain, and the car broke down. “Luckily I’d taken out European RAC cover so the car went off to a garage and we were given a hire car to complete the challenge, which we were allowed to do because it was about getting the team across the finish line. Youngsters meet Olympic stars Dozens of Plymouth primary schoolchildren had stars in their eyes when three Team GB stars joined them for a morning of laughter and learning in the water.

After attending a Q&A session with the three Olympic stars, the children then went poolside to watch a diving demonstration by Tonia and Sarah. Groups of children were then able to take part in

Olympic gold medallist Becky Adlington and diving duo Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow took the children through a range of fun activities and lifesaving lessons at Plymouth Life Centre. Everyone Active, which manages the Life Centre hosted the event in partnership with Becky Adlington’s Swim Stars. Around 130 children from Stuart Road Primary School, Riverside Community Primary School and Oakwood Primary Academy were invited to the event as their school’s had all won awards from Everyone Active for their swimming programmes.

swimming, diving and pool-side CPR lessons. Becky, whose Swim Stars programme works with over 6,000 youngsters, mainly in the north of England, said that she was impressed with Plymouth’s commitment to teaching youngsters to swim. “Plymouth is one of the few cities around which makes such a massive effort to teach children to swim. There’s a real passion for it in the city - the Life Centre’s facilities are simply outstanding,” she said. Thousands of primary schoolchildren from Plymouth and further afield take part in organised swimming lessons at the Life Centre every year. They take part in a three week intensive programme of lessons designed to teach them to swim at least 25 metres. Every child taking part receives five free family swims and discounts are also offered on lessons.

Record breaking sailors

Two dinghy sailors who sailed a Royal Navy boat from Plymouth to Portsmouth this summer have been confirmed as record holders. Petty Officer Phil Slade and Mark Belamarich, who both work for the Royal Marines in Plymouth, set a world record for the distance sailed by a two-man dinghy – a standard 14-foot long Bosun class. The friends were presented with a Guiness World Records certificate each to mark the achievement and are already planning their next, as yet specified, recordbreaking adventure. The certificates were presented at the Camber by Major Steve O’Sullivan, Royal Marines. Phil and Mark (who was taught sailing by Phil only three months before the ‘Bosun Challenge’), staged the gruelling three-night voyage to raise money for and awareness of the Royal Navy/Royal Marines Charity. They thanked all those who helped raise £2,922.

Petty Officer Phil Slade, who is the second in command of the Royal Navy Sailing Centre on the Camber at Royal Marines Stonehouse, in Plymouth, said: “We are both relieved that the record was finally confirmed after a three-month wait for the evidence to be reviewed. This

THE CHRIS COLE

Experience

By Dave Simpson, Station Manager of Cross Rhythms Like many millions of people right across this country I spent a lot of time this summer glued to the TV watching the Olympics and Paralympics. I have always loved watching professional sport. Seeing the very best talent from around the world do what they do best is always fun to watch as far as I am concerned. Not only were this year’s Olympics and Paralympics amazing from a purely athletic perspective but it was incredibly successful for Team GB. So successful in fact that they won more medals and more gold medals than the home games in London 2012, a feat never before achieved by any other nation. Quite rightly the stars of the summer were given a hero’s welcome when they arrived back in the UK. To add to all the media interviews, TV appearances and general celebrations, the athletes paraded their

medals in front of thousands of fans in both Manchester and London.

However I am sure many of you are hardworking parents, grandparents, health workers, teachers, council workers, business owners, cleaners, care workers and many more. It doesn’t need me to say that to fulfil any of these roles takes hard work, commitment and sacrifice.

As far as I am concerned this adulation is warranted. After all, Olympians spend years putting themselves through intensive training and have to sacrifice time with friends and family to achieve their goals. When it pays off and they get a medal they deserve to get some attention.

But where are the gold medals? Where is the parade for the street cleaners, post men and women, police officers and public servants?

This being said, Olympians are certainly not the only people who deserve praise. Nor are Olympians the only people in society who make sacrifices. There are unlikely to be people reading this article who are or have been

The truth is we have a culture that focuses on the best of the best Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. He is also a Fellow and often it of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). bit less. But where would our society be without people who fulfil all those jobs I have mentioned? They are certainly no less important than any sports person. The bible puts it like this; to be the greatest one must become the servant of all. This is a paraphrase of Jesus’ words to his followers when they asked him how they could become great. It is so interesting to me to think that God puts greatness down to how well we serve those around us. It is very unlikely any of us will receive public acclaim for serving others, but if God values it, that is very encouraging. The bible also encourages us to ‘store our treasures in heaven’, a phrase which suggests that our good deeds, which may go unnoticed to others, are not missed by God. So if you, like me, watched with amazement this summer while people in Rio did things that seem physically impossible and accomplished things you can’t even imagine, be encouraged that, although you might never get a medal or a parade, your good deeds are seen and you are valued more than you know.

Tour de Moor cyclists raise £94,000 for St Luke’s Hospice Hundreds of intrepid cyclists rode the wilds of Dartmoor as St Luke’s supporters took on the 2016 Tour de Moor cycling challenge, generously sponsored by Murray Skoda. Raising an estimated £94,000 the annual event saw participants take the 11km, 23km or 52km routes from Harrowbeer Airfield, Yelverton which this year took a new trip around Buckland Abbey. A National Trust estate beautiful for walkers, but certainly wasn’t a walk in the park for the cyclists. Steve Chilcott from Ugborough near Ivybridge said: “I thought the first part would be easy through Buckland Abbey. I assumed it would be flat but the reality was long hill climbs. It was really tough. Beautiful surroundings and stunning views though”. Gavin Hatrey from Southway added: “Buckland Abbey did provide a good bit of off road through the woods. St Luke’s promised lots of mud and we got it! It’s a great new addition and keeps the event challenging”. Out on the 23 km course and raising £500 was mum Louise Walker and son Dominic from Crapstone. “This is the first time we have taken part and it was really fun,” said Louise. We are doing it for my husband who has had cancer and has been helped at home by the team of St Luke’s nurses and social workers. It’s a remarkable resource and we need to make sure it is funded by events like this so it can carry on.”

Allister and Ben Macphearson from Brixton and Ruth and Ben Firth from Yealmpton

Emma Jones and her daughter Ruby from Yealmpton

And riding in memory of their neighbour Sian, was mum Emma Jones and daughter Ruby, age 11 from Yealmpton. “It’s the first time for Ruby, although I did the 52km last year” said Emma. “Ruby is pretty fit, but there were some long steep hills near the end which proved a real challenge, but she was determined she wasn’t going to stop”.

Rescue Team for their vital support and the Plume of Feathers pub for help with facilities.

Claire Luckhurst, event fundraiser for St Luke’s said:

“Wow, it’s been an amazing day and we’re so hugely grateful to everyone that braved the course today. Today’s riders have pledged enough to look after 94 families at home in the next year and that’s an incredible achievement for everyone involved. They did us all proud!” St Luke’s would like to recognise the kindness of the Maristow Estate and Buckland Abbey for providing the use of their land this year, the Devon and Cornwall

St Luke’s offers care for people dealing with life-limiting illnesses everywhere from Salcombe to East Cornwall, via Tavistock and the moors, supporting families as much as patients. The charity supports around 3,200 people and their families each year, services which they need to raise over £4 million to provide.

Helping a business gem make its mark in the world of designer jewellery A successful independent jewellery designer in Plymouth is hoping to boost her online sales with the help of e-commerce and marketing specialists Vertical Plus. Since 2006, Nicola Hurst Designer Jewellery has established a reputation for high quality jewellery, handmade by herself and other designers, which is showcased at her shop in Hyde Park Road. Sales from the shop are strong and now Nicola - who celebrated 10 years at her gallery in October - is looking to the team of e-commerce experts at Vertical Plus to help her replicate that success online via her website.

They will be looking to help Nicola better connect with new customers online, particularly highlighting the bespoke nature of the jewellery she sells. Nicole Sage, a partnership co-ordinator working on the project, said the work presented a particular challenge given the nature of the sector.

“Designer jewellery is a difficult market as the likes of Etsy and Folksy have an established profile and are often favoured over smaller independent sellers,” said Nicole. “Nicola does have real talent and some wonderful pieces of jewellery available so we will be working hard to replicate the success of her shop sales online. A key element of our work will be to communicate the quality of those pieces and

in particular, the time and care that is put into designing and producing each one.”

Nicola Hurst said: “I am looking forward to working with Vertical Plus and utilising their knowledge and expertise in e-commerce to enhance my online sales capability and really build on the continued success of my shop and studio.” Nicola offers a range of necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets and other bespoke jewellery items all handmade by herself or other designers. She also accepts commissions to create unique bespoke jewellery to a customer’s own specifications and even holds wedding ring workshops to help couples create their rings themselves. ‘Let’s talk about abuse’ ‘Let’s talk about abuse’ is a National Citizens Advice campaign that encourages ordinary people to look for the signs of domestic abuse among their friends, family and colleagues: to talk about it, listen, and also offer support when needed.

By Gary Neeves of Advice Plymouth

Last year one in every 15 women and one in every 33 men experienced domestic abuse at the hands of their partner or former partner. A quarter of women and just over a tenth of men experienced this kind of abuse at some point in their lives. Around a third of those people experienced ‘severe force’, and for some this is an almost continuous feature of their lives. Shockingly, three per cent of people of those reporting abuse experienced it “more than 50 times or too many times to count” in the last year. Specialist services in the form of refuges, legal professionals, the police, helplines and other support services play a critical role for many victims. Unfortunately however, many people suffering abuse don’t speak to them, and this is the problem Citizens Advice wants to address. Supporting people In September Citizens Advice launched the ‘Talk about abuse’ campaign focusing on informal networks people have including friends, family, neighbours or colleagues. Friends and family may be able to support victims where others might not be able to. Advice Plymouth supports this initiative and also wants to encourage and enable ordinary people to recognise domestic abuse, and talk about it safely so they can make the right decisions. While it is a difficult and delicate subject, we know

that when people feel able to openly talk about domestic abuse to a friend or family member they suspect might be experiencing abuse, it makes it a lot easier to disclose what is happening. We want to support ordinary people to look for signs of domestic abuse amongst their friends and family, and be able to talk about it when they can! When people feel able to talk to their friends or family they can be supported in finding help and advice. When the ‘Let’s talk about abuse’ campaign was first launched in 2013, Citizens Advice saw an 800% rise in reports of domestic abuse! That resulted in people getting help across the country, and importantly, here in Plymouth. We want to see the same happen this year! Advice Plymouth supports people suffering from all forms of domestic abuse including abuse that is physical, emotional or financial, and provides advice and information on what options are available and can also signpost them to specialist agencies if needed. If you are suffering domestic abuse or want to know more about the ‘Let’s talk about abuse’ campaign you can find out more information on the Advice Plymouth website and the Citizens Advice Plymouth website. www.citizensadvice.org.uk www.adviceplymouth.org.uk You can also contact Advice Plymouth for information and advice on a wide range of issues: Telephone: 03444 111 444: Monday to Friday 9am - 6.30pm. Weighing the cost of a lighter pound.. So was headed an article in the Financial Times recently. After my comments on currency last time the pound has just plummeted to only being able to purchase one euro in value at some exchange points.

effectively more expensive to purchase.

Now seems like a good time to try and add some analysis to the debate aimed at discussing the practical impact of this to the average person on the Plymouth street.

These may then have to cut internal costs i.e. by shedding staff. This would increase unemployment, which in turn impacts the demand on the benefits system – and so it goes on!

On the plus side, a falling pound is good for British exports and is in theory helpful in attracting foreign tourists to the UK (in November?). However, for many it will result in increased costs and receiving less value for money in transactions. Whether the cause is ‘Brexit’ or not is open to debate; some financial advisors I have met, who work locally “on the ground” view the economy as due for a “course correction” in any event. No argument either way can be proved as the contributing factors are too varied and complex, but the facts are as they are and we have to deal with them! And it will affect the person in the Plymouth street. Firstly those of us who drive have seen petrol and diesel prices rise recently and this is likely to continue. Other costs of living are likely to increase too, especially those involving importing goods as imports become

People might react in this market by holding back on spending their money, which will lead to less consumer demand, and put possible pressure on the solvency of shops and other retail outlets.

Maybe we will all purchase more ‘home’ grown and produced products – this would certainly boost our economy and keep profits ‘in house’ rather than shared abroad – ‘buy local’ would be a good motto to action! And it would be a good idea to review our domestic budgets – see where we can ‘cut back’ on expenditure items or even ‘cut out’ some items. As I say, many complicated interwoven factors are involved. On the bright side, if you happen to be sitting on some foreign currency now might be a good time to cash this in and buy some pounds! As usual I offer the details of local organisations that can help business owners and other individuals with financial difficulties. Christians Against Poverty (Plymouth) 0800 328 0006 (freephone)

Flu jab campaign targets elderly and children

People in Plymouth who are eligible are being urged to have their flu jabs, as figures reveal that last winter four in every ten flu outbreaks in England were linked to schools.

aged 2,3 and 4 years of age. It is also available through your GP for children with underlying health problems that make them at increased risk of flu.

“If you think you or your child might be in one of the eligible groups make sure you talk to your GP practice about the free flu vaccine.”

Residents aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with long term health conditions and children aged 2, 3, and 4, and children in school years 1, 2 and 3, are among the groups being encouraged to get vaccinated.

Professor Greg Dix, Director of Nursing for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We support the work being done across Plymouth to encourage people to get vaccinated against seasonal flu.

The flu jab campaign is led by NHS England and is being supported locally by Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group, and Livewell Southwest. Dr Ruth Harrell, the city’s interim director of public health said: “I have the flu vaccine every year without fail, as I have a long term condition, and I want to make sure that I am protected against flu. “As well as the injection for adults in all these affected groups, there is now a nasal spray available for children. Flu can be really horrible for young children and they can spread it around the family, but a simple nasal spray can protect them. “This is offered in schools for children in school years one, two and three, and is offered through your GP for children

“Frontline healthcare workers treat patients from the aforementioned groups on a daily basis and see the effect that flu can have on more vulnerable patients. To protect our patients from transmission of flu in the healthcare setting, the Trust offers yearly flu vaccinations to all of our staff.” Dr Paul Hardy, Plymouth GP and chair of the Western Locality of NHS NEW Devon CCG, said: “Flu is a highly infectious disease. The symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, and extreme tiredness. For most healthy people, a bad bout of flu is worse than a heavy cold usually requiring someone to spend a few days in bed. “However, serious infections, especially in those with underlying health conditions, although less common, can lead to hospitalisation, permanent disability and even death.

Dr Ruth Harrell (left) and Councillor Bowyer having her flu jabs

“It is really important that everyone takes flu seriously and that all those in the high-risk groups identified have their flu vaccination. You still need one if you had the jab last year - the viruses are constantly changing so we need an annual injection.” Jan Potter, Acting Head of Health Improvement for Livewell Southwest, said: “Flu can be a very serious condition, particularly for people who are frail, elderly, have a weakened immune system or the very young. People who are eligible for the flu vaccine can receive it free of charge form the GP, some pharmacies, or workplace occupational health provider. “The more people who have their

vaccination, the better, as it reduces the likely spread of flu, and prevents increased demand on health services during the busy winter period. Livewell Southwest is committed to protecting everyone in our community, including staff, their families, visitors and people we provide services for.” Who should get vaccinated and why? People aged 65 and over - You are eligible for the flu vaccine this year (2016-17) if you are aged 65 and over on March 31 2017 – that is, you were born on or before March 31 1952. So, if you are currently 64 but will be 65 on March 31 2017, you do qualify. It’s free because you need it. Older people are one of the groups

that are more vulnerable to the effects of flu. People with Long Term Health Conditions – COPD; bronchitis, emphysema; diabetes; heart kidney or liver disease or have suffered a stroke, flu on top of health conditions like these can easily develop into something very serious and could land you in hospital. Don’t put off getting the flu vaccination. It’s free because you need it. Carers - If you are the main carer of an older or disabled person you may be eligible for the free flu jab, speak to your GP. Pregnant women - The flu jab is the safest way to help protect you and your baby against flu. Pregnancy naturally weakens the body’s immune system and as a result flu can cause serious complications for you and your baby. You may be less able to fight off infections, increasing the risk of becoming ill as a result of flu. Children aged two, three and four on August 31 2016 – that is, children born between September 1 2011 and August 31 2014 – The flu vaccine can help protect your child from flu and also reduce the chance of flu spreading to others. Children in school years one, two and three – The flu vaccine can help protect your child from flu and also reduce the chance of flu spreading to others. Plymouth wins ‘open for business’ accolade Plymouth City Council has won the local authority of the year at the Insider’s annual South West Property Awards for being open for business and driving growth. Council leader Ian Bowyer and assistant director for Economic Development David Draffan went up to Bristol to receive the accolade at an event held at the Marriott Hotel last week. The category was designed to recognise the role councils play in driving economic growth through improvements to infrastructure. The judges said the council had demonstrated ‘an exceptional and proactive approach to the built environment in the last 12 months. It has an innovative approach to planning, infrastructure and housing needs and has a compelling vision for a waterfront city.’ Council Leader Ian Bowyer said: “I’m delighted that the hard work from teams here has been recognised. “The work we do is about making life better for our residents. Behind these amazing projects is the goal of creating real jobs, money in people’s pockets and homes for families to live in. “I get questions about why we want Plymouth to grow – and that’s the answer. It’s about as many people as possible sharing in what Plymouth has to offer as a city.” Speaking in front of an audience of almost 250

professionals and developers from across the region South West Business Insider editor Graham Southorn praised the past year’s achievements and said the strong activity across the region is set to continue. In the last year alone the council with its partners has made significant progress in some key Initiatives: • City Deal and South Yard – First phase land transfer complete, Enterprise Zone secured and planning permission for the first phase has recently been granted • It helped Burrington Estates secure Sitel to bring 700 jobs for the city • A £2.7 million direct development at Hearder Court in Langage safeguarded 80 jobs at Dartmouth Foods and created 100 more • The planned History Centre has secured major grants from various funders including £14.8 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund • The new £4.17 million coach station in Mayflower Street opened, which paves the way for the £40 million Drake Circus Leisure Scheme at Bretonside. This will create 350 jobs and 260 construction jobs • The derelict Quality Hotel has been demolished and this key site is now being marketed • Delivered 8,575 homes with over 90 per cent on previously-built land. Building is underway on a further 644 properties and 4,741 have permission to be built.

Key industry role for estate agent Chris

Sailors from the Royal Navy’s Plymouth-based submarine HMS Trenchant have honoured the memory of a colleague awarded the military’s ultimate mark of courage. A team of submariners helped unveil a Blue Plaque to honour Lieutenant Richard Sandford who became a hero of the First World War Zeebrugge Raid and was rewarded with the Victoria Cross. The plaque, marking Lt Sandford’s birth place, in Cathedral Close, Exeter, was unveiled by the sailors from the Devonport-based boat who also provided the honour guard for the event. They were joined by their commanding officer Commander Rob Watts.

He skilfully placed his vessel under a viaduct which connected the submarine berths to the land and helped supply them. He then laid his fuse, abandoned his submarine and successfully destroyed the viaduct, cutting off a vital supply line to the submarine garrison. HMS Trenchant is one of four Trafalgar Class submarines in service with the Royal Navy and is approaching the end of a three-year maintenance package.

Chris, branch and marketing manager at Mansbridge Balment in the city, has been appointed Westcountry regional executive with the National Association of Estate Agents, (NAEA) which is regarded as a benchmark for excellence in estate agency.

Chris has pledged to make a difference during his three year tenure and one of his key aims will be to encourage more agents throughout the region to be part of the NAEA’s licensing process. “As a company we are extremely proud to be one of the few estate agents in Plymouth fully licensed by the NAEA and I want to take this opportunity to do what I can to encourage many more agents to join the fold,” said Chris. “Regulation remains a thorny issue in our industry. Sadly there are still customers entrusting what is the biggest transaction in their lives to rogue agents free to set up in

Commander Watts said: “It is very important to remember our fellow submarine brothers-in-arms, particularly those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and whom were awarded the highest honour. I am very proud that HMS Trenchant provided a suitable guard to mark this important occasion of our submarine heritage.” The Zeebrugge Raid in Belgium was a daring plan by the Royal Navy to blockade the Imperial German Navy and prevent them sailing their highly effective U-Boat submarines from port. Lt Sandford was 26 when he commanded the submarine, HMS C3 and used it effectively as an explosive device to help prevent them sailing and sinking Allied shipping. In April 1918 at Zeebrugge he sailed with a crew of only six sailors on board.

Plymouth estate agent Chris Mervyn will play a leading role in promoting the benefits of the UK’s professional body for estate agency across the region after landing a prestigious industry role with the organisation.

The NAEA operates a licensing system for estate agents across the country designed to give customers confidence that their chosen agency will deliver a service of integrity and to the highest of professional standards.

business with little or no knowledge of estate agency.

Chris Mervyn - key role

“Fortunately they are in the minority and that is largely thanks to the tireless efforts of the NAEA in raising standards throughout the property sector, via training and professional qualifications.

His appointment is also recognition of the high esteem in which Mansbridge Balment is held by the NAEA and Chris is under no illusions as to the importance of the role.

As Westcountry regional executive, Chris is undertaking a hugely responsible role. He will be a key point of contact for agents across the region, offering help and advice and keeping them up to date with industry developments. He will also be responsible for reporting to the NAEA board on activity in the region and will be working hard to promote membership of the organisation as well as raising public awareness of the NAEA through media engagement.

“2017 promises to be an exciting year for the NAEA as they have a number of key developments planned that will have a very positive and lasting impact on our industry,” said Chris. “To be a part of that process is equally exciting for me and I will do everything I can to enhance the reputation of the NAEA here in the Westcountry and promote the incredibly valuable work it does across our industry.” “They are raising the bar even further - and that has to be good news for customers.”

She will be ready to deploy on operations armed with Spearfish torpedoes and the latest Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles with strike ranges well in excess of 1,000 miles in-land. She has state-of-the-art satellite communication technology and is capable of operating alone or in support of other units in a task force.

Plymouth Homes for Veterans welcome VIP guests and local supporters Staff and residents at Alabaré’s Plymouth Homes for Veterans welcomed the Lord Mayor and her Consort, Councillor Pauline Murphy and Councillor Brian Vincent, as well as local Ambassadors and supporters, to the home to see and hear about the vital support the charity is offering the region’s Armed Forces Veterans. Homes for Veterans is an Alabaré initiative, providing support and accommodation to those who have become homeless or are struggling to adjust to civilian life. Veterans can find themselves homeless for many 20

reasons, most commonly through debt, relationship breakdowns, unemployment or health issues. Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans team provide them with practical support and a home whilst they can deal with the problems which have led to them becoming homeless. The specialist nature of the homes means that residents also benefit from the camaraderie and emotional support of people who understand life in the Armed Forces. During the open day residents and staff served refreshments and guests had the opportunity to tour the home and speak to the residents about the support the charity is offering to them.

Alabaré has been caring for the South West of England and Wales’ most vulnerable people for 25 years by providing shelter, practical help and emotional support. Their first Veterans’ home was opened in Plymouth in 2009, when the charity identified the need for services tailored to the needs of Armed Forces Veterans. During recent years Alabaré’s specialist Veterans’ services have grown and the charity is currently the largest provider of homes for Veterans outside of London. Annamaria Farkas, senior community fundraiser said: “We organised the Open House event not just to celebrate Alabaré’s 25th Anniversary, but to show our

gratitude to those who make this home possible. Our charity could not do the work without the invaluable help of local individuals and organisations in Plymouth such as Wolferstans Solicitors, Armed Forces Bikers, our Ambassadors, volunteers, staff and the public.” Commander Charles Crichton, chairman of the Alabaré Plymouth Ambassadors said of the visit, “An uplifting day to celebrate the wonderful work of Alabaré over 25 years and to witness, at first hand, how the dedicated work of our staff and volunteers is continuing to help veterans in need get back on track to a fulfilling life.” For more information on the work of Alabaré, or to find out how you can support, please visit www.alabare.co.uk

Work gets under way on former Ship Hostel building in Millbay Work is set to start to transform the derelict former Ship Hostel building in Millbay into affordable apartments - as Plymouth City Council seeks to relieve the number of empty homes in the city.

The new flats are being brought forward through a pioneering partnership between affordable housing provider QSH, private finance house Harcourt Capital, Plymouth City Council - as part of its Plan for Empty Homes’ initiative – and South Devon Rural Housing Association, who will manage the new development. Steve Partridge, executive director at QSH, said: “We’re pleased to mark the start of our work on site to transform the former Ship Hostel building into attractive new affordable apartments, supporting local people in achieving their ambition to own their own home through our innovative scheme. “The Ship Hostel building is very well known to local people, and we’re excited to be bringing it back into use. We look forward to welcoming the first tenants into their new apartments next year.” Tenants of the new apartments will be able

City College Plymouth students have celebrated the completion of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at two ceremonies held in the college’s PL1 restaurant. The public services, skills development and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students were presented with certificates and pin badges by the Lord Mayor, Pauline Murphy, before enjoying afternoon tea made by hospitality and catering students.

The Ship Hostel building, which has been empty since 2011, is to be converted into 11 contemporary, affordable rent-to-buy flats with associated parking. The first homes are expected to be ready for occupation next summer. Representatives from QSH met with representatives from Plymouth City Council, and local building contractor Classic Builders – who are creating several jobs through the delivery of the scheme – on site recently as work on the development prepares to start.

to benefit from QSH’s Rent-to-Buy scheme – a ground-breaking combination of private investment and government enterprise incentives enabling aspiring homeowners to pay affordable rents whilst building up their crucial first deposit so that they can purchase their property between the first and fifth year of living there. Under the scheme, half of the tenant’s rental payments are put towards the deposit they need to secure a mortgage to buy their home (up to a maximum of 10%), whilst those who choose not to purchase during this time can continue renting their homes for a further 15 years. Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing for Plymouth City Council said: “We are delighted that work is starting on converting the empty former Ship Hostel into 11 apartments. This reflects our commitment as a council to both make better use of our empty buildings and provide more

homes for the people of Plymouth. It is a great example of what can be achieved through partnership working between the Council and QSH.” Steve Prime, chief executive of South Devon Rural Housing Association, added: “We are pleased to be involved in this innovative project to preserve an important local building in the heart of Plymouth.

proudly list on their CVs, giving them something extra to attract potential employers. “The Awards give young people confidence, builds their stamina, compassion and determination, and increases the belief they have in themselves. Congratulations to all.” Now celebrating its 60th year with over 1,800 organisations across the UK, the Awards scheme is available to more young people than ever. Its purpose is to encourage 14 - 24 year olds to get involved with their local community and try new experiences.

This year, 56 students completed their awards; 34 achieved Bronze, 19 Silver and three Gold. “What the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offers young people is the opportunity to broaden their horizons,” said skills development lecturer, Chris Little. “It is a chance to take up a physical activity, hone a skill and help out their local community. This is an amazing achievement that the students can

“The project brings investment into the local economy and will provide much needed homes whilst helping people to get onto the property ladder through the innovative QSH Rent-to-Buy scheme.” The QSH-rent-to-buy homes will be allocated via a local lettings policy, which will give preference to people who currently live, work or have family they support in the area. People are invited to register their interest in the new apartments by contacting South Devon Rural Housing Association on 01803 847591.

Colleges join forces to boost skills and economic growth Devon’s four principal further and higher education colleges have launched a unique collaboration that will benefit learners and employers across the county.

All rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the colleges already have a successful history of working together. They employ some 3,000 professional staff to deliver high quality, responsive and efficient education and training to more than 50,000 students each year, from young people aged 14-19 to adults.

The colleges support more than 5,000 apprentices each year and offer university-level education to more than 3,200 students. Phil Davies, Principal, City College Plymouth, said: “As an organisation devoted to transforming lives in Plymouth, we also recognise our wider regional role in driving economic growth. “That’s why we are fully committed to the collective and strong collaborative working that the Devon Colleges Group will provide. “Together we can use our experience and expertise to achieve a significant long-term regional impact, by increasing and improving education and skills, helping to create a high wage economy and promoting higher level opportunities to raise the bar for all.” The Devon Colleges Group has pledged to analyse

Local publishing and marketing company, Cornerstone Vision, is recruiting more part time distributors to deliver community newspapers, magazines and leaflets door to door in every area of Plymouth. The company has seen significant growth in the last few years, and has expanded the reach of its own publications, the Plymouth Shopper, Plymouth Magazine and the Torpoint Advertiser. There has also been an increase in the number of local, regional and national companies who use the company’s leaflet distribution service.

City College Plymouth, Exeter College, Petroc and South Devon College are setting up the Devon Colleges Group, a partnership with a shared vision focussed on enhancing skills, raising aspirations and driving regional economic growth and productivity.

Courses range from entry to degree and higher level, and learners include the most able as well as some of the most disadvantaged, those in the workplace and others studying on college campuses.

Continued expansion creates local work opportunities

“It’s great that we have been able to grow at a time when the national picture for newspapers is in decline,” said Cornerstone Vision’s managing director, Ian Pilkington. “Our success is due in no small measure to the hard work and effort of our distributors, who provide a superb service in all kinds of weather, helping us to reach our delivery aim of ‘every leaflet through every door’.” Colleges join forces (from left): Phil Davies, City College Plymouth, Stephen Criddle South Devon College, Diane Dimond Petroc and John Laramy, Exeter College

effectively the skills needs and gaps in the region and respond quickly to emerging trends in order to deliver Devon’s growth ambitions within a prompt timescale. Collectively they will continue to serve their local communities by providing high quality and relevant education and training, while combining their efforts to enable the delivery of training that may otherwise not be viable. Looking to the future, the group will work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure that Devon has the right mix and balance of provision, including the staff expertise, curriculum and infrastructure capacity to deliver on local, regional and national agendas. Each year the four colleges contribute around £130 million to the local economy while making an even bigger

long-term impact through increasing and improving the education and skills of local students and businesses. Together, they play a pivotal role in the educational, economic, social and cultural prosperity of the region, providing a £1 billion per annum boost. Chris Garcia, chief executive of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, says: “We welcome the commitment being made today by the Devon Colleges Group to support the Heart of the South West economy. “Improving skills and working with employers are key parts of helping to create a more productive and inclusive economy and we look forward to continuing to work with all our colleges and training agencies to achieve this aim.”

The company has vacancies for people to deliver in most areas of Plymouth, working part time selfemployed. The company’s free-to-reader publications have increased in popularity and Cornerstone’s distribution director, Tony Hodges, emphasised just how crucial the role of the distributor is in this. “They have to deliver within a set time frame, and although it’s not too tight, it needs to be done on time. Advertisers and readers both need to have the publications delivered regularly, and by and large it is this part of the job that makes all the creative work of our writers and designers worthwhile. Readers love it, advertisers benefit from it and it’s all, literally, in the hands of a team of very reliable distributors. We now need to grow that team!” Anyone interested in these vacancies can contact Cornerstone Vision on 01752 225623, or by email tony@cornerstonevision.com.

Talented Paralympian sets her sights on Tokyo

Prestigious award for young engineer A young civil engineer from Plympton has won a prestigious industry award. Jack Walker, from Chaddlewood, has been named the south west’s Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer in a regional awards programme run by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA). Jack joined Dawnus Construction in Exeter in 2013 as an industrial placement student, but kept in touch with his colleagues after returning to university. He graduated from Plymouth University with a First Class honours degree and re-joined Dawnus in May 2015. Since that time, he has been working on the 12 Dock project in Devonport, where he is now the sole engineer supervising the construction of a new 17 metre high, 41 metre wide and 6 metre thick reinforced concrete dividing wall. It was this hard work, commitment and sheer talent that earned Jack a CECA South West Training Award, presented to trainee civil engineers, apprentices and lifetime achievers in recognition of exceptional performance and dedication. Jack said: “Winning this award is testament to the support I’ve received from Dawnus. I would certainly encourage other young people to consider a career in civil engineering – it’s challenging but extremely rewarding.”

Jon Benton, Divisional Director at Dawnus, said: “Jack is without doubt one of our most promising people. His enthusiasm for the industry and openness has encouraged a long line of undergraduates wanting to know more about Dawnus and civil engineering in general. He is certainly a great asset to Dawnus.” Alan Taylor, Executive Director at CECA South West, congratulated Jack on his achievement and Dawnus for investing in young people and providing such positive early career support. He said: “Jack is a very impressive young man and exemplifies the talent that the south west needs to nurture if we are to optimise the significant investment in infrastructure that is earmarked for the region. “As he has shown, civil engineering offers a very exciting and rewarding career path for young men and women – with lots of different entry options – and I hope many more will explore the opportunities available, with the support of their parents and careers advisers.” Jack received a certificate and cheque for £500 at the Awards Lunch at The Imperial Hotel, Torquay.

The wheel chair athlete was talentspotted by a GB coach six years ago at a school sports day. Since then she hasn’t looked back and has competed against, and beaten, some of the world’s top 100m, 200m and 400m sprinters. “I am really focussed on getting to Tokyo,” said Doaa. “I train twice a day every day and go to competitions around the country – in the summer this can be nearly every weekend. It’s really good for my development to be able to compete against top class athletes. Most are a lot older than me so there is a lot to learn from them.

at 80% efficiency because of my arm length. The design of the new chair overcomes this and could help me to knock a few seconds off my times, which in sprinting is everything. It would really help me to realise my potential and take me a step closer to Tokyo. The chair costs £5,000 so I’m really hoping to get as much support as possible.”

“I’m raising money at the moment for a new racing wheel chair. My current one only Doaa in race action allows me to work

alongside her Hair and Beauty course at the college. “I love racing but my other passion is beauty and fashion,” Doaa continued. “I want to be a makeup artist and run my own company. “The course I’m doing is great because there are lots of practical sessions and it covers quite a wide spectrum of hair and beauty. I like the idea of being able to do a customer’s hair and makeup so they can get it done in the same place by the same person.” To support Doaa in her journey to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics visit her Facebook page ‘Doaa Shayea Wheelchair Racer’.
