Mosquitos buzzing! Torpoint Mosquito’s young sailors got their first look at their new boats when the club took delivery of two new sailing dinghies in October. The young sailors of Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club (TMSC) were thrilled to be at the launch of the club’s two new RS Feva dinghies. The club already has a very active youth sailing scene. Its Cadet section which is open to young people aged between 8 and 18 - offers weekly sessions during the summer months and monthly winter sessions. As well as water confidence, cadets learn team building skills, grow their self-assurance, mix with children of different ages and sailing abilities and most of all have fun. However, the section has proved so popular that there is currently a Torpoint Mosquito’s cadets and helpers with the new boats waiting list of local youngsters hoping to join in caused by a shortage of boats and qualified instructors. The Club has come up with plans to extend and improve the section and at the same time increase facilities for all sailors. Funded by sponsored Fevas to our Club fleet a very active dinghy walks, cake and raffle which already includes racing scene at TMSC tickets sales and Optimists, Toppers, Picos and it is hoped that donations from the 1730 the younger sailors will and Visions, means that social club amongst we will be able to get also be encouraged to others, the purchase of those who are waiting to compete alongside the the two new dinghies regular racers at the club be join the Cadets out on is a key part of the the water much sooner. using the new boats. plans. RNLI volunteers from the Rame Peninsula Branch have been recognised for their years of dedication to the charity at an awards ceremony held recently at RNLI Looe Lifeboat Station. Joining other fundraising volunteers from across Cornwall, members of our local Branch have been presented with an assortment of distinctive awards by Andy Hurley, RNLI Regional Operations Manager, South West. Peter Harrison, Chairman of the Rame Peninsula Branch, was presented a Silver Badge for his volunteer fundraising work in the local area. Mike Wood, Branch Secretary for many years, and who has recently taken on the role of President of our local RNLI Branch following Sir Richard Carew Pole’s retirement, has been awarded the charity’s Bronze Badge for his years of work and dedication. Similarly, Judy Wood, who for many years has been our Branch Treasurer, was also presented with a Bronze Badge for her support to the charity and involvement with organising many fundraising events. Suzanne Dennis, who has been an active member of the local Branch for many years, giving regular help with Flag Day and Flag Week collections in Millbrook, was awarded a special Certificate of Thanks. Finally, although David Mutch was unable to attend the ceremony, David was awarded a Bronze Badge for his dedicated support to the charity, and this will be presented to him at a later date. Mike Wood, President of the RNLI Rame Peninsula Branch said: “The fact that five of us were given awards says much about the continued success of the Branch in raising much needed funds for the RNLI. It also speaks volumes for the generosity of the Rame Peninsula communities who never fail to support our fund raising events. Having served on the Committee for a number of years, I know how demanding it is on an individual’s time to organise events, but it is also hugely rewarding knowing that the money we raise really does make a difference to the Lifeboat crews and Lifeguards who often risk their lives to save others, and to make our coastal waters and beaches safer places for all of us to enjoy”. Although RNLI Lifeguard patrols at Whitsand Bay have now ended for the season, lifeboat volunteer crews locally and across the country continue with their lifesaving work, and RNLI

to purchase these new boats is just one part of our development strategy for the Club. Over the last year we have been planning a number of improvements to the club’s facilities, including arranging for some of our members to become qualified dinghy instructors over the winter. This means that we can extend our cadet section and offer new adult beginners’ courses next year. “Torpoint Mosquito is at the heart of the Torpoint community and these plans will allow us to welcome local people of all ages and abilities into membership through training and coaching on our own premises,” he added. Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club is a friendly family water sports club with dinghy and yacht racing, cruising, windsurfing and scuba-diving sections. It welcomes new members. Torpoint Waves Group braved a violent thunderstorm to attend their October meeting at Cornerstone Church. Guest speakers were Chris and Ken Trethewey whose subject was ‘A Wedding in Jerusalem.’ The couple explained that many years ago while living in Leicester they befriended a student from France and gave her a bed for the night until she could find accommodation. The gesture led to a friendship which continued over the years until one morning Chris and Ken received an invitation to attend the wedding of the woman’s daughter in Jerusalem. The wedding took place at the end of December 2012 and gave the couple a unique opportunity to visit the Holy Land. Chris and Ken’s joy and wonder of the beautiful wedding, with the service conducted in many languages was followed by a week’s stay at a hotel in the modern part of Jerusalem. They were able to step back in time and visit parts of the city steeped in so much history. They walked the Via Dolorosa - the route that Jesus took on the way to his crucifixion - and also visited the Stations of the Cross, Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane

and the Wailing Wall. They also visited Bethlehem where Chris proved to be a tourist attraction herself - her blond hair fascinating a group of visiting Nigerians who wanted to take her photo. Braving the sharp crystal stones on the shore of the Dead Sea didn’t deter Chris from having a swim - or rather a float - in the sea. Even though the wedding was almost two years ago, the sense of their happiness and awe in not only attending the wedding but experiencing the uplifting spiritual aspect of their trip shone through their polished presentation. It gave the group a feeling that they had been taken on a journey where they could almost feel the atmosphere of the ancient city, bringing the stories in the Bible alive. Eve gave the vote of thanks adding that the talk had brought back many memories of her own visit to the Holy Land 14 years ago. A bouquet was presented to Rita Trussler for her sterling work as one of the raffle organisers over the years. Jackie Brayshaw, another raffle organiser, will also receive a bouquet at the next meeting - which will be a fun evening. New members are always welcome.

Volunteers needed to help local charity group More than one in six people in Britain are affected by arthritis and it is the biggest cause of pain and disability in the UK. It attacks children too! Torpoint has a very active fund raising group who support the charity Arthritis Research UK. The cash they raise helps finance research into this painful condition. In the last 38 years this local branch has been led by Enid Gaved who last year was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her outstanding work in helping to raise more than £70,000. Now Enid, who is aged 80, needs some extra volunteers to run coffee mornings and other functions. Can you help? Remember, one day this debilitating condition could cripple your life – or that of your child or grandchildren. To find out more please contact Enid on 01752 812547.

Jeremiah’s Journey representatives receive the cheque from Torpoint Lady Singers

Torpoint Lady Singers raise nearly £3,000 for Jeremiah’s Journey Torpoint Lady Singers and their guests, the Casterbridge Male Voice Choir from Dorchester, presented a very special concert on October 12 to celebrate the presentation of a cheque for £2620 to Jeremiah’s Journey - the Plymouth-based charity which helps bereaved children and their families. The sum of money was raised at the Torpoint Lady Singers 23rd 12 hour annual Singathon. Jeremiah Bear and Sarah were present as representatives of the charity to receive the cheque. The joint concert raised another £280 making a grand total of £2900. The concert was held at St James Church, Torpoint. The Casterbridge Male Voice Choir were visiting as part of their trip to Cornwall which included another joint concert in Penzance. Chris Trethewey, chair of the Torpoint Lady Singers, thanked the Rev Lyn Parker and church committee for the use of the church. She also thanked the guests for their sensitive performance of ‘Softly As I Leave You’ and many others and their soloist, Anna Marie Geare, whose voice resonated around the church as she joined them in ‘O Rejoice that the Lord Has Arisen’ and for her beautiful solo choices of ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘I’ve Been In Love Like You’ from ‘The King and I’. She also congratulated both musical directors and their accompanists for the direction and talent. The evening was made especially enjoyable by the wit and eloquence of Adrian Wilton who compared the successful evening.

On October 18 Torpoint Lady Singers travelled to Mary Tavy by coach to sing at the Mary Tavy Methodist Chapel. The choir was warmly welcomed and this was maintained through the presentation of a well-balanced programme of music which covered modern songs with the added bonus of musical director Sylvia and accompanist Sue, performing two stunning duets on the piano. Ken Trethewey on saxophone accompanied the choir in ‘Can’t Help Loving That Man’ along with an exciting new talented soloist from Torpoint Community College: 16-year-old Rhiannon Hardie. Accompanied by Sue she captivated the audience with songs from the shows including ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ and ‘As Long As He Needs Me’. Sue had narrated excerpts from the musicals setting the background for the songs. After her performance Rhiannon was presented with a bouquet by the choir’s chair Chris Trethewey, who predicted it would be the first of many bouquets she would be receiving and was a true ‘star in the making.’ Chris was also the compere for the evening, impressing the audience with her sense of humour and seamless linking of the programme. The Mary Tavy organisers of the concert praised it as one of the best performances at their chapel. A good evening was rounded off with a buffet before setting off on the journey from Devon back into Cornwall.

Royal Navy chefs cook up top prize Royal Navy chefs are celebrating taking the Tri-Service culinary championship title for the first time in 14 years. The Naval Services Culinary Arts Team (NSCAT), comprising chefs and stewards from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, beat the Army and the RAF to take the coveted shield. Many of those taking part work at the Defence Maritime Logistics School within HMS Raleigh or are based on Plymouth ships and submarines. Team manager Warrant Officer Chaz Talbot, from Plymouth, said:

“It’s absolutely amazing to win overall, it was so unexpected. Last time we won the competition was in 2000, we’ve not really come close since so to win and have so many people there was overwhelming.” The team picked up seven golds, 15 silver, 28 bronze, 10 certificates of merit and nine best in class awards. WO Talbot, the logistics training officer for the Catering Services Squadron at the Defence Maritime Logistics School, added: “The team were absolutely awesome throughout, including

all the support staff, drivers, our caterer Vernon Rust and all the competitors. For the first time for as long as I can remember everyone in the team came away with something. Our team spirit and cohesion seems to have eclipsed the other two Services. The competition, Exercise Joint Caterer, was held over three days at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham, and aims to provide caterers, chefs and stewards with a contest which develops their culinary skills for the benefit of the Armed Forces.

4 Advertiser November 2014 By Roy Bright, Secretary of Churches Together in Torpoint and District

What does an inclusive church look like? One of the gospel stories I love is the moment when Jesus called Matthew to follow him. Jesus is walking along talking to the crowds who eagerly bustle around him. When he comes to a tax collector’s booth he pauses. Now tax collectors were, without exception, judged to be the lowest of the low. They were nothing less than scum. Not only were their financial dealings questionable but they collaborated with the occupying enemy, the Romans. But Jesus stops at his booth and the crowd immediately expect Jesus to berate him, to condemn him but instead of that Jesus looked at this man, this scum, this lowest of the low and said “Follow me “ ‘Follow me and be my disciple’. There are few things that Jesus could have done that would make him more unpopular than this. To say to this man in effect ‘Come and be part of my team, I’m going to change this world, come and change it with me’. Nothing could illustrate more clearly how different was Jesus way. He reached out to everyone. His God whom he called Father doesn’t excommunicate anyone, does not cut anyone off, and always allows for everyone to come if they choose.

How often has the Church forgotten this principle. The agonising over sexuality, divorce etc. have so often pushed the church to schism. Indeed, it has frequently been a lack of willingness to be inclusive, that has led to the church breaking into the many denominations. We forget so easily that Jesus’ mission was not to establish a religion, nor to make work for theologians, but to preach and practice a new way of being, thinking and acting which he called the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is not based on rules of membership nor on a creed, but on a vision of an inclusive community. The point is that we should reach out to each other in compassion and understanding. That we should take risks by reaching out to include all people just as he did. There is just one rule that is required of us, to seek always to love God and love our neighbour. To seek to act on that principle belief is all that is required, and that is challenging enough! The views expressed here do not necessarily express the views of all members of Churches Together

Traditionally, the autumn months are quiet in the Lion’s calendar. It gives our members a chance to unwind and to recharge their batteries. This has not been so for our very own Lion Norman Nethercott. He worked very hard behind the scenes, (excuse the pun), to stage manage the Old Time Music Hall Concert for Senior Citizens that was held in the Torpoint Council Chambers on October 3. Norman, and his small team, must be congratulated on delivering a very professional and entertaining programme to a near full house. Well done Norman! Lion President Stephen Murray and his wife Lyn hosted our VIP guests, Mrs Sheryll Murray MP, Sir Richard Carew-Pole and Torpoint Mayor, Councillor Mike Pearn. The production opened with exquisite, exuberant, exaggerated exhibitionism by our Vice President, Lion Stephen Morris. There were two performances from the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, conducted by Jonathon Delbridge, with Norman taking the baton for a piece from ‘The New Moon.’ Mark Cheetham, who entertained the audience with his excellent conjuring skills, was followed by John Mostyn-Bond who, in his natural persona, was superb with humorous song, witty stories and comedy. Elizabeth Sidebotham, having already accompanied the choir, gave an accordion melody recital. The cast of The Ferryboaters gave a wonderful rendition of parlour songs, bringing back many memories. They then returned for the finale and encouraged everyone to join in with a sing-song. Norman, on behalf of our Lion’s Club, wishes to thank Andy Martin who supervised the lighting and sound; all the performers and their assistants; all the Lions who helped with the teas and biscuits, and especially to all the senior citizens who came to join us. Thank you. Lion Stephen said at the end of the evening that it was nice to give back something to those who support the lions. Several other activities have recently taken place. The skittles evening at Antony Village Hall in September was well attended and everyone had an enjoyable time. If I am honest, there were more Lions and supporters than the host team. A Lion was overheard to suggest that we let the locals win, out of kindness. There was no need. The Antonian’s thoroughly thrashed our Lion contingent. Maybe we need more practice, so if you have a skittles team, or have a carpet bowls venue, get in touch and have a friendly night of fun. Our social team can be contacted on either 822524 or 812512. Thank you to those who attended our coffee morning at the congregational hall in Cawsand in

Public views sought on Rame Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan A series of public meetings were held across the Rame Peninsula in October to give local residents a chance to comment on the Rame Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan. Work to create the plan is reaching its conclusion, with draft policies being written that reflect the community’s views. The area has already had several rounds of public consultations, surveys and events, which have now been assessed, and collated, to create new policy areas. The public meetings took place between October 13 and 28 in Antony, Cawsand, Crafthole, Freathy, Millbrook, St John and Wilcove. The meetings provided a further chance for residents to provide their opinions on specific policy themes, such as housing, growth, business and conservation, before the Rame Peninsula Neighborhood Plan which will outline the future shape of the area will be finalized. Cornwall Councillor George Trubody said that there was a key reason for this further consultation work: “We’ve had a brilliant response from the community, with hundreds of replies and opinions from the whole age range, 16-99, and from every corner of the Peninsula. “What we need now is a final clarification on some of the more controversial or unclear points. We know that residents in this area really care about the Neighbourhood Plan, so we went all out to gather those opinions and preferences during October.” The work is being supported by The Peninsula Trust and the meetings will also include their news about new activities in the area. Simon Ryan, general manager for the Trust, explained: “This Plan really matters, so we thought it would be a good idea to get out to all the larger villages and to run daytime sessions for older people who don’t get out so much at night, plus evening events for those getting home from work. This way we hoped to include everybody who wanted to express their opinion.”

The Peninsula Trust was formed in February 2014 and is a Community Benefit Society. This is a new name for an old legal structure, the Industrial and Provident Society. It is an independent organisation, not affiliated to any other body and is governed by a Board of Directors, all of whom live and work on the Rame Peninsula. The Trust is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, and is subject to their regulation and inspection. This gives the Trust permission to raise private investments from individuals and organisations, and provides transparency for investors and the public. The Trust aims to work with local people and existing groups to build an even stronger local community. First ideas include: Jobs and Training - Work experience and apprenticeships, vacancies, help for businesses. Village Volunteering – Support for the elderly, outdoor work, youth activities and village events. Information – What’s happening in the area, news and opportunities To contact the Trust call 01752 941582 or visit www.thepeninsulatrust.org.uk for more information

Family run business with great deals on electrical goods The Electrical Shop in Torpoint is a family business run by Gareth and Gillian Evans. They are members of the Euronics buying group, which gives them access to a large range of suppliers. Being a comparatively small shop they are unable to stock more than a small fraction of what is available, but with the latest technology available through the Euronics online website, customers can choose from a wide variety of products, being able to either order online or in the shop. This gives customers whose time for shopping is limited access 24/7 to the products. Gareth and Gillian have always been aware that their shop must stock a wide range of electrical appliances and spares, and so their stock includes everything you could want, and if it isn’t in stock they will go out of their way to order it for their customers. Gareth also repairs appliances at very reasonable prices large appliances in the home, and kitchen appliances (Kenwood, Magimix, etc.) and also vacuum cleaners in the workshops.

On Tuesday November 11 at 11am there will be a two minute silence at Sparrow Park. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them. The Christmas trees and Christmas Lights will be put up in Fore Street on Sunday November 23. Anybody who would like to help to put them up please meet at Sparrow Park between 9.30am -10am. The Switch on of the lights is on Saturday November 29 at 6pm. There will be stalls etc. in Fore Street from 4pm. Come along and have an enjoyable evening. 2015 is going to be a busy year with the opening of the new health centre at Trevol Business Park in January. Once the old health centre is closed down it will be up for sale, along with the old fire station. The Antony Road and St James Surgeries have already been sold. The police are looking to relocate their station within Torpoint. If and when, they relocate, the police station site will also be put on the market. St Columba & Torpoint RFC are in talks with Cornwall Council and Antony Estate to relocate to the Old Fisgard Sports Grounds/Golf Driving Range area. 2015 is certainly going to see a lot of changes for the town! We must all work together to make sure our Library is not lost as this is the hub of our community! We are now in the planning stages for Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day at Thanckes Park (The Lawn) on Saturday June 20 2015 from 12 noon until approx 10.30pm ending with a grand firework display. The Freedom of Torpoint Parade with HMS Raleigh will also be taking place in 2015 (Date to be confirmed). Vandalism and Damage at The Skateboard Park and Benodet Park Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of vandalism and damage at the Skateboard Park and Benodet Park. The good news is that our CCTV cameras have identified some of the culprits taking toilet rolls from the toilets, carrying wooden pallets on to the skateboard park to start a fire were it has burnt a hole in the tarmac, which then had to be repaired at a cost. Other vandalism has included lighting fires on the banks, climbing the wall around Benodet Park and damaging the wall (this wall has stood there for around 100 years with no damage until now), damaging the electricity box, throwing things around and making more damage in Benodet Park plus other problems.

Busy year ahead as Torpoint prepares for many changes

This has all been reported to the police who have a copy of the CCTV footage. Torpoint Town Council will be meeting to decide if prosecutions to the culprits will take place. Sadly because of the vandalism we are looking to install more CCTVs around the park. There are also problems with broken twigs and stones being thrown in the pathway of the skateboarders which can be very dangerous. All these repairs cost time and money which has to be payed for out of your families’ council taxes. Lions make it special for Rainbow youngsters Torpoint Lions donated £400 to support a trip to Crealy Adventure Park for 40 members of the Torpoint Rainbow units. The girls all aged between five and seven, were accompanied by two main leaders, Sue Brennan and Sarah Robinson, along with other adult helpers and Young Leaders. Sarah said: “Although we can subsidise a certain amount towards the cost of trips like this to keep costs low for parents, we were unable to afford the steep cost of coaches - and this was jeopardising our plans. “Thankfully the Lions stepped in and made a generous donation which meant we could go ahead with the trip.”

County appeal is launched at HMS Raleigh In the year that marks 100 years since the birth of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance and hope, The Royal British Legion is encouraging people in Cornwall to support the Poppy Appeal for the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. This call to action came at HMS Raleigh where the second-in-Command of the base, Commander Sean Brady, welcomed invited guests to this year’s County Poppy Appeal launch. The event centered round a giant six foot Poppy and saw a respectful platoon of future sailors formed by recruits from the Naval Training establishment. As they marched out they were accompanied by the Royal Marines Military Band and a Corps of Drums. Once the ceremony was over a fleet of approximately 20 motorbikes from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch formed a convoy and set off with their precious Poppy cargo, on their most unusual tour of Cornwall ever! The Riders, many of whom are Serving and Ex Service veterans themselves, will escort the Poppy following a route which will take the iconic symbol of remembrance to visit as many places as possible in the County, including many with a high WW1 connection. The 2014/15 fundraising target in Cornwall is £500,000 which will go towards the Legion’s national target of £40 million to continue its vital work delivering practical, through life care and support to the Armed Forces community. The Legion’s County Chairman for Cornwall, Steve Lewis said: “The Poppy Appeal 2014 embraces the dual role of The Royal British Legion as the custodian of Remembrance and the provider of welfare support to our Armed Forces community. The poppy is a powerful symbol which is worn to commemorate all those who have fought and died in our Armed Forces and show support for those still serving today along with their loved ones. “We’re encouraging people to dig deep for this year’s Poppy Appeal to help us raise £40 million, so we can continue providing our vital support to individuals whether they’re still serving, transitioning back to civilian life or have left the Services, and importantly their families too.”

Millbrook Pharmacy Update

Travelling overseas? Risk of Malaria? Don’t forget Antimalarials before you go…

Gee where has 2014 gone? I had promised some of you updates on what is happening in the pharmacy world, through the Advertiser, a few months ago! Every pharmacy has an inspection roughly on a three yearly cycle. I knew this would be our year but didn’t know when. There have been huge changes in the way pharmacies are inspected. Reports in the pharmacy journals highlighted the challenge ahead and how important it was to check all your standard operating procedures to be exact to how systems are run in your pharmacy - also there was a strong indication that the pharmacy team would be questioned. That had never happened before for us. 8th October was our day, as soon as he walked in, my shop staff knew who he was. With fear setting in…what would he ask? Do we offer him a cup of coffee? The inspector greeted my team warmly and with questions that we face daily. Quickly the fear was gone as we showed him our procedures, how we work and the mountain of paperwork we had to present. The next few hours flew by and he gave us great comments especially to the pharmacy team for being so helpful and friendly. I owe a huge thanks to my team for their dedication and commitment in a very demanding role. I wish to thank all our customers for your tremendous support also to many of you completing the yearly patient survey. We received 100% from your kind comments, thanks so much. 2015 brings many changes in the wider community. The Rame Group Practice will open their new premises in Torpoint. It is a growing concern for many especially in the Torpoint area of how to get to this new site but more importantly how we can put our repeats in because we don’t use a computer and it’s too far to go. I understand there will be bus services running roughly about every 30 minutes, stopping on Trevol Road near the Surgery also there are places such as CHAT in Macey Road, where you can leave your prescription repeat. We help many with their repeats as we go daily to all the Surgeries also we run a free prescription delivery service to Cremyll, Cawsand, Freathy, Crafthole, Antony, St John, Wilcove and Torpoint. One of my team and I can visit you and together we can set up the best method for you to receive your monthly medication. Also if you have any concerns or questions about your medication, I will be happy to discuss this with you. It’s that time of year, many of you have had your first sniffles, already. We offer Flu Jabs from now until March. You are very welcome to call in but best to avoid between 12.45 pm to 1.15 pm each day and from 10th to 23rd November. We recommend to have your flu jab sooner than later, which help provide protection, also it can be a little unknown with stock availability should there be a sudden high increase of flu. Travelling to areas where malaria is a risk? I can now issue anti-malarial medication for this. Please feel free to pop in or give me a call for further information on 01752 822391. Do you suffer with Asthma? Do you find you need to use more of your inhaler? I offer a free Asthma In Check, this is different to what your Asthma Nurse checks you for. I measure the amount of air you inhale not what you exhale. This unique technique has become very valuable for many of the Asthma sufferers I have seen. Often the way you use your inhaler can be too forceful which

results in your medication hitting directly into the back of your throat. This action is likely to make you cough and where has your medication gone? From time to time you run out of your medicine but it can be an extra day before you receive your prescription from your GP. We often have requests of ‘Can I have 2 tablets until my prescription comes through?’ We are unable to let you ‘borrow’ medication until your prescription arrives. For some medication, there may be availability that you can purchase a limited supply and on Saturdays only, there is a scheme called ‘Emergency Supply’ but this has restrictions. All the local GP Surgeries now have online ordering for your repeat medication. You will need to log in, create a password and add your medication when you wish to order and select the pharmacy you wish your prescription to go too. The next time, you log in, it will be a lot easier. Please allow up to 4 days before calling into the pharmacy to collect your medication from your on line order. Some of you have calendars on your computers or mobile phones, we suggest that you add a message to this, with a reminder to reorder your medication in 3 weeks time. Did you know you can book a GP appointment on line? Apparently the Surgeries offering this service have a selected number of online only appointments. Please go to your GP Surgery website and follow their instructions. We have been told this is so much easier than ringing for an appointment. Where’s our web page…that will be sorted in 2015, it’s on ‘our to do list’! Visit our Facebook page as we often pop a message or two on it, most weeks. Men, how many of you are growing a ‘mo’ for Movember? Such a great idea to bring an awareness of men’s health issues. Did you know that 1 in 8 men will be told they have prostate cancer at some point of their life? Check out Prostate Cancer UK website, great information with surprising facts. I understand my team are busy arranging weekly raffle prizes in support of Prostate Cancer UK throughout November. We wish to encourage every man calling into the pharmacy to allow an extra few minutes to have a free blood pressure check. Get to know your numbers and enjoy a free cup of coffee afterwards. I wish to share some stories, a couple from another Pharmacist. An elderly gentleman was taking a range of medicines for his crippling joint pain. Included in his medication is a drug called Methotrexate which is a potent drug that requires anyone taking this, to have regular blood tests. This gentleman’s granddaughter each week she would put his medication into a weekly medicine tray for him. She was physically handling his tables with her fingers. She started to become unwell but couldn’t understand why. Thankfully it was discovered quickly what she had been doing. I wish to highlight to anyone making up trays for others, to be very careful or to check if your local pharmacy could do this for you. Another guy had been unwell for many months. He had many tests. The hospital and his GP were unable to diagnose his problem. This guy was an Uncle to one of the staff who worked for the Pharmacist sharing this story. She asked the Pharmacist if he could come up

with suggestions for him. His reply was I could talk to him but I’m not sure I can help. The man calls in, to speak with this pharmacist and it was only as they were talking, the Pharmacist noticed how this man was madly chewing on something. So he asked ‘What are you chewing?’ ‘Oh this, it’s that chewing gum to stop you from smoking’ The Pharmacist asks ‘How much do you chew a day?’ ‘Oh I never stop, I even sleep with it in my mouth. I’ve taken this for months’ to cut a long story short…this was the cause of this man’s health problems. Sometimes in pharmacy, my staff are criticised for asking too many questions when someone has a request for a particular medication or has a health issue. Our aim is to offer the best advice, medication, products that is most suitable to your request. We have a duty of care to all our customers. We want to help with the cause of your problem, not with masking the symptoms. We are often told I can buy that in the supermarket without a pharmacist, why do you do it here? It is also a legal requirement for selling of many medicines to be under the supervision of a Pharmacist on the premises. All my team are highly trained in the selling of medicines. They will take time to listen and we have a consultation room if you need a private area. Medicines need to be taken with care, they can have interactions or side effects. It is important to know what other medication is taken also if there are any known illnesses or allergies. We had a guy in with a bad back. He wanted Ibuprofen the strongest and the most he could buy. He also wanted something for the tearing gut ache he had. He was doubling over, he was irritable, sweating, impatient and thankfully his helper was very supportive and said he was worried about him because he was coughing up some blood. It was quickly discovered this guy was taking Ibuprofen like lollies and there were signs this guy was in serious trouble. Yes we refused the sale and requested he was taken to hospital urgently. We never did hear what happened. Do you have developing symptoms that started as a niggle and you are unsure of a suitable treatment? Also if you feel at this stage you don’t need to see the Doctor please call in and discuss your symptoms with me or one of my team. We will listen, we will share our knowledge and we will give you guidance. Guess you have seen the signs, your pharmacist also dispense good advice. Thanks so much for your continuing support, I look forward to seeing you soon. Have a great Christmas and all the very best for 2015. Lindsay

TORPOINT

Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed members and two visitors to the meeting and introduced the speaker for the evening, Peter Lavis, whose talk was entitled ‘Lost Gardeners of Heligan’. His talk was not what we had all expected of perhaps flowers and plants, but was of what happened to many of the Heligan gardeners who left their employ to enlist in the Armed Forces at the outbreak of the First World War. At that time the gardens were left and the house was used in 1916 as a convalescence home for the Royal Flying Corps. With the aid of some amazing photographs and slides and through extensive research Mr Lavis was able to tell us what had happened to several of the gardeners who had enlisted in the Royal Navy, the Royal Engineers, the Infantry (Duke of Cornwall Regiment) and we were all very moved by such a poignant talk, especially at this time of the year. Seven members attended the group lunch at Downderry and enjoyed good food and the occasion was beautifully presented. To celebrate the Centenary of the WI the Baton, which is travelling around the country at the moment, is coming to Cornwall in February. On February 23 it is due to visit Downderry and will then come to Torpoint before being handed over from Trematon to Devon on the border of the Tamar Bridge. Sheila, Nell and June went along to the Music Day which they enjoyed very much. Macmillan have sent us a letter of thanks for the donation we made on the occasion of the Macmillan Walk at Mount Edgcumbe in the summer. We have also received a letter from the Head Bard thanking us for all our hard work on the occasion of their visit and for a wonderful tea. It was agreed that we would take part in the Christmas Tree celebration in St James Church on November 29 and members will get together with some ideas for decorating the tree which will represent the WI. Several members would also like to participate in a craft group to be set up where members can learn new crafts. Final arrangements were made for the visit to the Two Cooks Evening at Lanreath on November 4 and also for our 40th Birthday Dinner – which will have a 70s theme – on November 26. Sue and Sylvia reported on their visit to the annual council meeting in Truro which was attended by Janice Langley, Chair of NFWI, and enjoyed listening to several very interesting speakers. They were also very pleased to accept the award of the Whitecross Cup for the Press Competition won by Torpoint this year. Competition results: Letter ‘Z’ - 1st Cath Olufsen, 2nd Jean Morgan and 3rd Betty Tarrant. Flower of the Month: 1st Sue Hale, 2nd Betty Tarrant and 3rd Jean Morgan.

MAKER WITH RAME

Guest speaker this month was Jane Squirrel, our local bat warden. Bats - a bit sinister, a bit creepy, creatures which might get in your hair or suck your blood? Well, now we are converted and nowhere near as scared after Jane introduced us to their world. We know they have been around for at least 65 million years. There are about 1,000 different species in the world and 25 per cent of all mammals are bats. There are 12 species in Cornwall one of which is Daubenton’s bat, a water bat which seems to be wearing pink glasses and flippers. Most of the bats in Kingsand and Cawsand are the tiny pipistrelles which can live up to 16 years. Jane was inundated with questions and we even found we were quite interested in files of droppings and dried bodies! We were reluctant to let her go.

Earlier in the meeting different members reported on the annual meeting in Truro, the group lunch in Downderry and the harvest tea in Crafthole. Our President welcomed two visitors - one from Australia- and tea was served by Yvonne and Judy. Our November meeting will be in the form of an outing to Tavistock and our next meeting in the Congregational Hall will be on Friday December 12.

WILCOVE

From the autumn countdown conference, sixteen centenary baton cushions to cupcakes and a very special 60th anniversary celebration - a busy month for members at Wilcove. Unfortunately we go to press before Jane, the owner of Jane’s Little Cakery, visits the ladies of Wilcove WI to share with us the art of cup cake decorating. There are, however, plenty of activities to report on. In early October three of our members travelled to Truro to attend the Cornwall NFWI autumn countdown meeting along with members from neighbouring WIs. While much of the meeting focused upon general business and ‘housekeeping’ there were also several memorable moments, speeches and speakers. Kathy Reed who completed her term as Chair of Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes (CFWI) in October delivered a very heartfelt and emotional speech in which she reviewed the ‘highs and lows’ of her time in post. From jelly roll days, poetry and painting to the Minnack Theatre in the rain and rambles through Cornwall’s glorious countryside her role seems to have been diverse, demanding but immensely rewarding.

CRAFTHOLE AND DISTRICT

Former RAF fighter pilot Mandy Hickson was guest speaker at the autumn meeting Our thanks to Kathy for her commitment and contribution to the CFWI. Kathy’s sentiments were also reflected in the speech delivered by Janice Langley (Chair of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes) whose membership of the WI spans some 40 years and who dedicates along with other board members well over 40 days per year to her role nationwide. With a positive emphasis on the forthcoming WI Centenary in 2015 Janice asked that the Cornwal NFWI not only cherish their established members, but also embrace the needs of new members in order to sustain the WI through the years ahead. During the meeting the winners of the annual awards and the Centenary Cushion competition were announced images of which can be found on the Cornwall NFWI webpage www.cornwallwi.org.uk/baton The keynote speaker for the autumn meeting was the very engaging, enthusisatic and entertaining Mandy Hickson, a former RAF fighter pilot. During a one hour talk Mandy recounted with great humour her journey in the RAF from officer selection and training through to combat duties as a fighter pilot over Iraq.

For an overview of Mandy’s presentation visit http://mandyhicksonspeaker.com/video. Sadly it appears Mandy’s military career ended due to defence cuts however her ‘dogged determination to succeed’ has taken her into the world of professional public speaking where as a motivational speaker she addresses audiences from the schoolroom to the boardroom. Mandy certainly inspired the ladies of the Cornwall NFWI who gave her a standing ovation on completion of what was a very inspirational presentation. Equally inspiring is the forthcoming wedding anniversary of one of our WI members Iris Tisley who celebrates 60 years of marriage to her sweetheart John. At our next meeting we will not only be able to enjoy Jane’s cupcakes but also a very special Malteser cake our chair Sue Walters will bake to celebrate this event (evidently John has a passion not just for Iris but also for Maltesers). Our speaker for November is Diana Lower who will give a talk entitled Washday Blues. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall and welcomes both visitors and new members.

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the formation of the WI. To celebrate this, the annual meeting will be held in the Albert Hall are interested in attending. As only one place is available this will have to be ‘first out of the hat’. At the beginning of the month, Jenny Pullinger attended the autumn council meeting in Truro, and gave a very full report, being especially inspired by the speaker. Pat Paxton of Downderry WI told us of their WI’s plans for the Centenary baton, which will be making it’s way around the county before hand-over to Devon on the Tamar Bridge on February 23. A Chorus Line, playing at the Devonport Playhouse, was recently the venue for a group of members. The vivacity of the dancing and the iconic song, ’One’ was worthy of any event put on at the Theatre Royal. The meeting was followed by the Harvest tea, which we shared with guests from other WI’s in the group. The theme was Tea at the Ritz, and tables laid with vintage linen contained a marvellous spread. Mel supplied some wonderful music from the 1930s, and members were asked to wear a hat. Betty Heapy brought a selection of these so that no-one was left out. Brian Pullinger made a very professional judge giving marks out of ten on several counts. First prize went to Sue Walters of Wilcove WI, who wore a very snazzy piece which co-ordinated with the rest of her outfit. She was given a gift voucher. Our own Angela Moore came second and won a lovely white cyclamen. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month except August and December, at 2pm in Crafthole Village Hall and visitors are very welcome.

PENSIONERS’ VOICE

After such a wonderful summer, the weather was most unkind for the meeting on October 9. But heavy rain and strong winds couldn’t deter the stalwart members of the Maker with Rame Pensioners’ Association who turned out in force to listen to Simon Ryan as he explained his vision of ‘working together’ community in the Rame Peninsula. Life was so different 50 years ago, when this was a tight-knit locality with everyone knowing and caring for everyone else. But now that more than half the houses in the sea-side villages stand empty just used as holiday homes awaiting visitors, neighbourliness has gone. But Mr Ryan of the Peninsula Trust has no intention of sitting back and allowing this to just happen. He is putting forward ideas which need the co-operation of everyone locally, to bring back community life, and at the meeting detailed one scheme for members to give some thought to. He hopes to buy the old laundry premises in West Street, Millbrook. This building is deceptive as it doesn’t seem to offer much from its frontage, but once through the front door there is an enormous amount of space. Sketches illustrated how this area can be transformed into different units, housing so many facilities, such as an information centre, a room to display local arts and crafts, a gym for exercising and physical fitness, yet another room for advice on training schemes and so on, the possibilities seemed endless. Mr Ryan hopes to include all ages in the project, ranging from a breakfast club for the young, to

Maker with Rame

interests for the elderly. Forms to fill in are being distributed to enable him and his committee to have an idea of what people want or need locally. There will be meetings held to discuss future plans, and how to raise the £360,000 needed to buy and re-furbish the premises. There is an added bonus in the fact that there are two self-contained flats on the upper floors which would be let to local people. The speaker was thanked by the chairman for his most interesting talk. The meeting had earlier opened with the usual hymn and prayer, then Mr Michael asked for a short silence in tribute to a valued member, David Elworthy, who died recently after a long illness. David’s widow, Maureen, was attending this meeting, so the chairman offered her the Association’s sincere condolences. Mention was then made of the ‘coffee-and-soup’ at the Community Hall on November 8 from 12 noon to 2pm. Raffle prizes are needed, as are cakes, books, brica-brac for the sales tables. The schedules for the Christmas Market Trip on Nov 14 are now available, the coach leaving Kingsand at 8.30am that day. Names are being taken for the Christmas Dinner on December 4, transport available. After tea was served and the raffle drawn, the meeting closed at 4.15pm. The next meeting will be on November 13 when anyone over the age of 50 will be most welcome.
