Residents encouraged to have their say

The vision for Torpoint gets town talking The recently launched first draft of the Torpoint Vision has become a huge talking point in the town, with young and old, residents and business-owners all having their say on the plans that will shape their town for the future. Inspired by feedback from locals, the first draft of the Torpoint Vision was distributed to households in Torpoint over the New Year, and followed up with an electronic copy sent to local businesses, with the idea of capturing feedback on the draft proposals. The feedback from businesses and residents has been coming in thick and fast online, and in letters and emails. There has been strong support and praise for the work of the Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group, the members of which are volunteers and a small number of town councillors. Residents are also delighted that there are steps afoot to improve the town for all. A number of questions about the proposals have been asked, and the Steering Group have worked these up into a Frequently Asked Questions document which has been posted online, and added to as and when questions are posed. Torpoint Town Mayor Michael Pearn said: “It’s vital that we hear from the residents of Torpoint, on their thoughts for the future of the town, thank you to everyone who has commented thus far.” Cllr Andrea Johnson, chair of the Torpoint Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering group said: “The next step in the process, is to review all the feedback received, and input that into the design proposal and suggestions for the town, to produce version two. “There is still time to comment on the proposals, before a refined version is released in mid-February,”

she added. “Not all the ideas illustrated in the first draft will make it through to the revised proposal, and that’s why this consultative phase is vital.” For more information, or to view or respond to the plans, please view the online resources at www.torpointtowncouncil.org and www.torpointplan.org.uk

Group face 220 mile trek to raise funds for Cornish cancer charity Five plucky men will be trekking more than 220 miles along the Cornish coast in May to raise funds for a local charity. The group - Martyn Mortimore, Mike Mahoney, Arron Pengelly, David LLoyd and Jordan Perry - will be walking the west coast path from St Ives to Millbrook from May 24 to May 30. They will be raising funds for LARF Cornwall, a charity which aims to help teenagers and young people under the age of 24 in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who are receiving treatment to help fight against cancer and leukaemia. LARF stands for Lauren and Rosie’s Fund, named after two brave teenagers who became close friends as they underwent treatment for cancer. Sadly, both lost their battles and the charity was established in 2010 in honour of their memories. The five walkers have called their charity fund-raiser The Great Kernow Koaster and have already secured support from a number of sponsors. Mike said that the idea to embark on such an adventure came about in 1999 when he and Arron were at school in Torpoint. “We had the idea to walk from Lands End to our school at Torpoint, but it proved impossible at the time.

“Although we were unable to do it on that occasion, the idea never really left mine or Arron’s mind, and we had often spoke about the possibility of reviving the idea. “We spoke again a year ago about the possibilities, only this time, myself and Arron felt as though we were at a point where we may not get too many opportunities to do it again. “We both agreed ‘now is the time’ so with a new found determination we spoke with

Mayor’s report for February 2016

Coffee morning raises funds for Shelterbox There was standing room only at a coffee morning in the Kingsand Institute on in January as people from all over the Rame Peninsula crowded in to help raise funds for Shelterbox, the charity working to rescue families in need of emergency shelter. The event was organised by the newly-formed branch of the Labour Party in Rame and Torpoint which was doing its best to help with the urgent problem of homelessness worldwide. Jerome Satterthwaite, chair of branch, commented: “There was a raffle, bric-a-brac and tea, coffee and cakes - all part of the normal scene at a coffee morning. But what was driving this event was a real concern for the miseries of families worldwide, so many of them facing the winter weather with no shelter.” Afterwards Richard Clark, who with other supporters of the Labour Party had organised the event, summed up what it was all about: “The event raised over £360 – a small contribution, but a way of showing that people in this part of Cornwall really care about families in distress worldwide. What matters is that there are people out there, old and young, facing the cold with nowhere to find shelter. We can’t be thinking about promoting the Labour Party right now – that will look after itself. “Children shivering in the rain need help – that’s a real, urgent need. We are not saying that local issues don’t matter. But the desperate need to help families find shelter is what concerns us today.” The coffee morning ended with a raffle, supported by generous gifts from Millbrook News, Millbrook Premier Store, Widdecombe Fare, Millbrook Football Club and others.

Torpoint Town Council facing big challenges to maintain services Can you believe January has gone already – now let’s hope we have an improvement with the weather. The Town Council has undertaken a comprehensive review of spending in the town and has focused on three key areas in particular: Cornwall Council retraction of services (and probable further retraction) of services and also services which it wishes to pass on to the Town Council. The implementation of the community driven Neighbourhood Development Plan and Vision document that have been well publicised throughout 2015. Finally the Town Council’s three year development plan that focuses heavily on services already absorbed from Cornwall Council and other projects initiated by the Town Council. For the 2016-17 financial year the Town Council are currently working with the principal authority and other key service providers to secure the longevity of services in the town. This could possibly include relocation to alternative premises for these services. This could be a pivotal year and the council is working hard to ensure the provision is secured and enhanced. In addition the council will also be investigating and working to secure the tennis courts in Thanckes Park, taking over the control of Japanese Knotweed and other services that could be lost or scaled back. The council will continue to operate the public conveniences, weed spraying of roads throughout the town, maintaining and enhancing Benodet, Rendel and Sparrow Parks and managing other recreational and social areas. The council have taken the step to engage an enforcement officer to help tackle anti-social behaviour such as dog fouling and fly tipping by having the ability to issue fixed penalty notices. The Town Council is also improving service provision in the Council Chambers that has seen a massive increase in hiring and use last year. Finally the Town Council will be working with key partners in the private, public and community sectors to implement projects, schemes and initiatives identified

within the Neighbourhood Plan and Vision document that if successful will give a tremendous boost to the town. Whilst it is acknowledged the council tax will rise by over 20% this year, the Town Council is still well below any of the towns in East Cornwall. A happy New Year to everyone from all of us at Torcare. December and Christmas has come and gone and we all enjoyed the many events and celebrations organised within the homes. Thank you to everyone who made Christmas a festive time for all of us and in particular thank you to the friends and relatives who joined us for Christmas lunch making it special and memorable. The raffles across the three homes raised £652.40 for the Residents Amenities fund and will be used over the coming months for the extra treats our residents enjoy.

Torpoint’s popular Indian takeaway Spice Aroma can now welcome guests at its brand new restaurant. Opened in 1998 in the centre of Torpoint by Abul Hasnat, Spice Aroma has established a reputation for fine Indian takeaway cuisine. After an extensive programme of work the new sit down restaurant has been created by breaking through into the adjoining property in Trevol Road. Abul was so proud to show the premises off that an official opening took place just before Christmas. Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn was accompanied by his wife Val and two grandsons to perform the official ribbon cutting to mark the launch of the new venture. Mr Hasnat’s family and all the staff supported the Mayor in the opening and after the official ceremony the guests were invited to sit for the first meals served in the restaurant. Mr Hasnat wished everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year and looked forward to welcoming guests new and old in 2016.

Celebrating the Ne Braving the icy waters at Cawsand

Santa is now having a well earned rest after his busy spell of travel around the Rame Peninsula. His visit was so worthwhile seeing the children’s faces and folk waving to him as he passed by and his visit to the Mount Edgcumbe Christmas Fayre was also a big hit with local and visiting children even from as far away as Italy. Thank you once again everyone for your support and helping the Lions raise money so we can support and give to good causes in our area. A big thank you for all the non Lion helpers who gave up their spare time to make sure the visits went ahead they are always appreciated. The New year day fundraising dip was a great success even with appalling weather, Sheryll Murray local MP and also a Westminster Lion headed the fancy dress judging and stated that the decision was really difficult selecting the winners of each group. New Lion town Cryer Clive O’Shaunnessy announced that due to rough seas the parade would proceed through Kingsand to Cawsand beach as usual and anyone taking a dip would not be covered by the Lions insurance and would enter the water at their own risk. Once the parade of swimmers reached the beach it was obvious the run to the water was irresistible. With plenty of supervision all went well and everyone just went in and pretty well came straight out again with a cheer from all the supporters. Well done for everyone who turned out helping to raise at least £ 3000 for charity of which the Lions receive 20 per cent with the rest going to the chosen charities or clubs of the participants.

The cobwebs were definitely blown away from the celebrations the night before and to help warm up afterwards hot soup was served free by the Lions. Cawsand Gig Club provided their usual barbecue with hot drinks most welcome. The official dip presentation will be held at the 200 club on February 26 at 7pm we hope all the brave dippers turn up. On December 17 Lion President Steve Morris presented a cheque to Torpoint Community College head teacher Andrea Hazeldine to cover the cost of a defibrillator which was purchased through the school. Karl Curtis, manager of the YMCA’s Torpoint and Rame Sports Centre was also at the presentation as the defibrillator will be located in the reception area and it will be for the use of the schools and the whole community enabling lives to be saved. Without your support throughout the year we would not be able to help the community so thank you for all the support in 2015 and we look forward to seeing you at any of our events in 2016. As usual a plea for more members, we are a smaller club than a few years ago, due to some members moving from the area and age retirements, we only meet once a month to discuss business then to prepare and take part in our annual events, if the thought of helping your community please contact Lion President Steve on 01752 816427 and you will be welcome thank you, Please remember we loan wheelchairs for free all we ask for is a donation on completion of your use, the number for enquiries of wheelchairs is Norman Nerthercott on 01752 812567 Thank you.

Gilead Foundations is a Therapeutic Community offering a residential rehabilitation programme

Fun and fireworks kicked off the New Year Eve celebrations in Torpoint with hundreds of people taking to the streets. Just before midnight saw the usual arrival of fancy dress revellers at the ferry lanes, spectators and fancy dress people filled the ferry lanes and at the stroke of midnight the noise was heard all around the town. It was a great atmosphere with the police having an easy job and enjoying the celebrations. The impressive firework display added to the atmosphere and it was a suitably happy New Year evening and a welcome to 2016.

Maker with Rame Pensioners’ Voice Anyone passing the Community Hall, Kingsand, on the afternoon of December 10, would have heard the members of the Rame Pensioners’ Voice raising those voices as they sang the Old Carols, nobly accompanied by Pauline Turpitt on the keyboard. The singing was fuelled by cups of tea, mince pies and clotted cream, served, as ever, by the stalwart committee. The raffle was drawn and Happy Christmas was wished to all by all as the meeting closed at 4pm. Chairman, Mr Michael, when he opened the meeting with the usual hymn and prayer, had mentioned that the Christmas Break at Cricket St Thomas had been thoroughly enjoyed, and that there were still a couple of places left for the Spring holiday on the Isle of Wight. Mr Michael then reminded members of the Christmas Dinner to be held at the Whitsand Bay Hotel, bus transport to be provided by the club. In the event the luncheon took place on one of the worst weather days of the year, blowing a gale and tipping with rain. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of the pensioners when an excellent meal was served in ideal surroundings. Indoors members could admire the wonderful view of pounding sea and mountainous waves as they relaxed, warm and dry, in Christmas decorated comfort. The chairman thanked the hotel staff for making the members so welcome, and then wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy 2016, reminding them that there would not be a meeting in January, so we would next meet in the Community Hall on February 11 on at 2.30pm, anybody over the age of 50 to be made most welcome.

Torpoint Community College hosted a Christmas lunch for senior citizens from the Torpoint area and local care homes. Students served coffee and tea which was then followed by a mouthwatering traditional lunch and then Christmas pudding or trifle. After serving the lunch the students joined the visitors on their tables and eat with them chatting away as they ate. The kitchen staff were delighted with all the positive comments from those who had enjoyed their Christmas treat. Head cook Tina Crago chatted to the visitors and accepted all the nice comments gracefully.

Headteacher Andrea Hazledine was proud of her students, especially the polite manner in which they carried themselves off and for their helpfulness. After the lunch the visitors were led to the assembly hall and were entertained with various performances from the Torpettes, the school’s own choir, and several musical performances. On completion of all the entertainment, the guests left full of praise for all involved in making their day special.

Cornwall gets £127,500 to tackle rogue landlords Cornwall Council has been awarded £127,500 to tackle rogue landlords in the private rented sector after it successfully bid for funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The vast majority of tenants in the private rented sector in England receive a satisfactory service from their landlords but, a small number of landlords act unlawfully, and place tenants in overcrowded or poorly maintained accommodation. The DCLG funding aims to crack down on this small minority of rogue landlords by providing funding to selected local authorities who have a large proportion of private rented stock in their areas and significant problems with rogue landlords. Cornwall Council will use the funding to better understand available intelligence, improve the skills of investigating officers and increase enforcement activity. Joyce Duffin, Cornwall Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Environment said: “The successful bid and receipt of this large amount of funding is great news for Cornwall. It highlights the progress Cornwall Council has made in addressing issues we have with the quality of our private rented sector, but there is more to do. The money will be used to identify and then tackle ‘rogue’ landlords or agents to improve the living conditions of people renting in Cornwall.”

Peter’s pirate adventure Pirates, wreckers, galley slaves, storms and fires come together in an explosive new children’s novel by Portwrinkle author Peter Gredan Davies. His latest adventure novel ‘Pirates and Promises’ was published last year and is available on Amazon. The retired teacher and former Royal Navy instructor officer won an award with his first children’s book which was called Animal Team. It was during a holiday to Mousehole that Peter learned about the Spanish attack and the burning of Mousehole and Penzance in 1595. He then did some further research which showed that the Cornish coast was also frequently attacked by North African pirates. Combining his research which his lifelong love of the sea, Peter decided to pen Pirates and Promises, a thrilling adventure novel for children aged between nine and 12. The novel is available for £6.99 from Amazon.

Anniversary celebrations at Polbathic A couple who live at the Roseacre Care Home in Polbathic have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. Friends and family joined in the celebrations with Lewis Peters and his wife Dulcie. Lewis, who is 99, served in the Royal Marines while Dulcie, 95, was the village shopkeeper in Widegates for 30 years, having also served in the Land Army. The couple met in school at Trenode and have been happily married ever since. They enjoyed the day with so much fuss being made of them with lots of lovely presents. This September Lewis will have another card from the Queen reaching the great age of 100 and next year another for both of them reaching 75 years of marriage. Congratulations to the two of them.

They managed to collect nearly £190 which will be donated to the Cornish Air Ambulance. The club is very appreciative of the support received, most particularly for the mulled wine and mince pies midway by Sue and Philip Willoughby and for the welcome refreshments by Geoff and Isabel at The Crossed Keys.

Create a hassle-free outdoor space and enjoy living life outside to the full As well as the usual winter tidying jobs to do, it’s worth looking at some of the products which can help you spend more time outdoors and keep your garden looking good. An artificial grass lawn provides a fantastic all weather surface - all year round. During wet spells, instead of stopping the children and pets from going out on to the muddy grass, an artificial lawn will let them get outside whatever the weather. The latest generation of landscaping grasses contain a mix of green shades and brown root mass for an authentic natural look. There’s no mowing, edging or weeding to think about

and with clever border planting to soften the edges and link to the space beyond, your new artificial lawn will be virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Many people stop using their decks at this time of year as they become slippery and slimy, yet it is a shame not to make the most of bright winter days. By Rev Alison Richardson of Cornerstone, Millbrook and Stoke Churches

Well, that was the year, that was. My mind is still full of some of the events of 2015, especially those which have rocked Europe, and in many ways, the whole world. I refer to the massacre in Paris, the air strikes on Syria and all the other awful situations around the world. I also refer to the recent floods which have devastated homes and lives. As a minister I am frequently asked the 100 million dollar question ‘Why does God allow all this?’ More often I listen to why the person is asking the question, try not to offer platitudes, instead I offer the love of God, God who always has, and always will, want the best for all people. MS, a very humble lady, and one of my dear ‘flock’ wrote this recently.

Let’s Blame God

God gave us a world with all that we need, with wind and the sea to give us our power for our heating and light that we need. The sun and the rain to make our crops grow, we added peelings and seaweed to make it rich, for the food that was natural to put on our dish.

House

Then came man with his sprays and gm crops, with additives that we find in our shops. With labels that say throw away which we do, while millions starve in our world every day. Then came man with his rocket up in the sky, down came pollution, smog, acid rain and who knows what? Our shield from the sun is burning away, with gases and sprays we use every day, and we get in our cars and drive away. We do all this without thinking, maybe we dont care? That the things we are doing pollute the air? So when you blame God for all the things wrong, please think again about where the real blame belongs. (MS did not write anything other than letters before a Celtic Christianity course at Easter last year. Now she has another ministry, of word.) My suggestion for 2016 is by the late Rev John Wesley “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”

The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of Churches Together in Torpoint

Extending a hand of friendship in 2016 WILCOVE WI As 2015 came to a close and we welcomed 2016 it may have on occasions seemed difficult to focus upon the positive aspects of life as a number of unprecendented events affected communities at home and abroad. From the severe storms in the North of England and Scotland to ongoing concerns about international peace and security there are certainly challenges ahead in 2016. It was reassuring however to listen to the content of the Queen’s Christmas Day speech for within this there were embedded heartfelt messages about the importance of family and community especially during difficult times. A member of the Women’s Institute since her tenties, the Queen has in her lifetime, experienced conflict, civil unrest and remarkable social change yet has remained a calm and constant force throughout. The importance of friendship among women has been, and remains, a central component to the Women’s Institute and in 2016 we look forward to buliding upon the sucess of our 2015 Centenary year and continue to join together with neighbouring WI’s in many activities; be they; crafting, cuisine, culture, or just a chat over tea and cake. Events and activities for the summer are in the early planning stages however we already have visits booked in the spring to Falmouth Maritime Museum,
