Pop along to the Pop Up Café Abundance! • continued from front page and energy to produce and that’s before adding in the costs involved in getting it processed, packaged, delivered to the place you buy it from and put on a shelf. To then throw it away is crazy for two main reasons. “Food should be eaten; there are enough hungry people in our own towns and villages who struggle to feed themselves and their families that we need to divert that unwanted food so it can be eaten. Secondly, it is a disaster from an environmental point of view.” “Putting food into landfill sites where it is compacted so that no oxygen is available as it decomposes, releases methane, a ‘greenhouse gas’ 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. As such a large percentage of food which is wasted is water, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that incinerating it as an alternate form of disposal is also very inefficient.’ Her response was to set up Café Abundance. Food is collected locally and then sorted and cooked. “Producing a menu from a random selection of unpredictable ingredients can be challenging, but it’s great fun,” said Jemma. “Not surprisingly we get plenty of fruit and vegetables and very little meat. Not much comes to us in the way of dried foods either, but it’s amazing what we can make. “There is never a shortage of bread, so we revisit some of the recipes our grandmothers knew – fruity bread puddings and using breadcrumbs to make crunchy toppings on savoury bakes.’ Café Abundance has proved so popular that it’s now serving meals from light bites through to full three course lunches every Thursday from 12 noon to 1.30pm in the hall at St James Church in Torpoint. They also Pop-Up in Millbrook on the first and third Friday each month at the Village Hall and on the fourth Friday of the month in Kingsand at the Community Hall. Payment for lunches is on a ‘Pay as you feel’ basis. Although the food is free to collect, there are costs involved in running the cafe and producing the food. No-one need ever go hungry and everyone has something to give, whether it is money, skills (she’s after an accountant!) or helping to wash up. The community benefits of getting together to eat in this way are huge. Pop along to a Pop-Up and eat eco!

Steve Wassell Insurance Management provide help and advice with mortgages, pensions, investments, life insurance, will writing, business insurance, property insurance as well as various other insurance and financial advice. Local man, Steve Wassell started out, like many of his contemporaries, working in Devonport Dockyard, before becoming an independent financial advisor in 1983, initially working in Plymouth. Living in, and loving Torpoint, he chose to move offices to Harvey Street in 1991, above the Bike Shop, so he become more involved in the community he lived in. Over the years Steve has been involved in the community by sponsoring a local under 16’s football team, and cricket team. He has also been involved with marathon fund-raising campaigns to raise money for Children with Cancer UK. Sport is definitely a recurrent theme in Steve’s life; he is a keen Man City fan, an accomplished sailor both locally and internationally and he enjoys to dabble in other sports when on holiday too such as golf and skiing. In 2002 he expanded and moved his offices to Investment House on Tamar Street where the business still trades from today. 2003 saw Steve turn his business from a sole trader into the limited company., Steve Wassell Insurance Management Ltd (not the short and snappiest of business names but it has remained) It is often know as SWIM for short. More recently in 2014 Steve took on another member of staff to expand the business in the general insurance sector. Having had a large volume of property owner and business insurance enquiries Steve wanted to be able to service the insurance needs of his existing client base and take on new clients. SWIM are specialists at being able to offer competitive quotes on home insurance for chalets, holiday homes and permanent residences when insurance is not straightforward. At times like this, local knowledge and experience is worth its weight in gold, and far outweighs the levels of customer service given by online quotations. Client relationships are extremely important to Steve and his business. Apart from his loyal relationship with the Torpoint Advertiser he does very little advertising;

Nepalese hospitality comes to Torpoint
New role for Clive Suman Pandey has recently brought a whole new flavour and feel to the bottom of Fore Street in Torpoint. Previously an Indian Restaurant, Suman has converted the building into a very classy, contemporary space, leaning heavily on his experience of working in the hospitality industry in London. The Namaste Cafe, named from the respectful greeting common in India and Nepal, reopened its doors on November 23. Suman already knows many of his regulars by name, such is the nature of his considerate hospitality. A phrase known by every Nepali is ‘Guests equals God’. Offering whatever one has to a guest is considered a moral duty and is taken seriously by the Nepali people. Its this level of care, that makes Suman’s front of house skills a genuine pleasure to watch. Suman chose to relocate from London, where he managed a successful Italian restaurant in Black Heath, to Torpoint, as he has strong links with the Brigade of Gurkhas. Many service and ex service families have settled in the region, which inspired Suman to open his restaurant here. The cafe is open from 8am to 1pm, serving barrista coffee, classic English breakfast dishes, as well as satisfying pub food lunches, with a Nepalese twist. The restaurant opens every day except Monday, and serves a traditional curry menu, beautifully presented, with Nepalese specialities included. Nepalese curries are a lot milder than the average Indian vindaloo, and they emphasise fresh ingredients. Suman’s brother Krishna Adhikari works as the head chef in the kitchen with 16 years of experience behind him. More information can be found on Facebook, searching for Namaste Cafe, or on their website, www.namastecafenepaleserestaurant.co.uk
Lion Clive O’Shaughnessy has been officially appointed Town Crier for Torpoint. Already Town Crier for Millbrook for four years, Clive is often seen at Lions charity events such as the New Year’s Day Dip and the Summer Fayre. He is delighted to promote both the towns he represents and also Lionism which does so much for local individuals, groups and charities. The Lions purchased a new flag for the 3rd Torpoint Brownies. Lion Pat and Lion Chairman Andy attended one of their weekly meetings and spent an informative time learning what modern Brownies are all about. Second Torpoint Guides, led by June Porter, took part in a Lions International Peace Poster competition which was won by 13 year old Lydia Baggaley. Lydia’s poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted world wide. The theme this year is ‘A Celebration of Peace’ and the contest aims to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions, is cheering for Lydia as her poster advances in the competition. Well done Lydia. NEW MEMBER JOINS TORPOINT LIONS Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions were delighted to welcome new Lion Gail Kelleher into the world’s largest service club organisation. Gail, from Millbrook became a member after attending three meetings. We all look forward to working with Gail providing service to our community.
COULD YOU BE A LION The Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club are looking to recruit new members. By organising events that local people can participate in and enjoy, such as the Santa Sleigh, the Summer Fayre, New Year’s Day Dip and many more – they make raising funds fun. This makes it rewarding in many ways, the joy of watching people enjoy the effort that has been made as well as knowing that the money raised will also benefit local people. Recently, the Lions have made donations to the Sea Cadets, the Torpoint Scouts, the 3rd Torpoint Brownies, the Royal British Legion in Torpoint, provided a ‘Scooot’ to give mobility to a severely disabled child and the list goes on. If you would like to experience the feel good factor amongst a group of like minded people, please contact any of the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions or message on their facebook page. If you feel you cant commit to becoming a Lion but would like to volunteer to help at any of our events we still would love to see you. DO YOU HAVE A BIT OF SPARE TIME? A Lions Annual Event, picking and selling daffodils will take place in the two weeks leading up to Mother’s Day 2017. If you could spare an hour or two to help pick the daffodils, bunch them or sell them, please contact Lion Andy Brownhill or message us on Facebook.
Raleigh bikers deliver Christmas cheer A team of motorcyclists from HMS Raleigh have delivered Christmas cheer to children at Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell. The team carried a special load of toys and selection boxes, some of which were donated by the staff within HMS Raleigh’s PT department. They delivered the goodies to the hospice in St Austell run by Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). Two sailors, two members of the Military Provost Guard Service and a Sea Cadet instructor made up the team. Lieutenant (Sea Cadet) Steve Lewis said: “We spoke about doing a ride before Christmas and decided to make it a charity run. We picked Children’s Hospice South West because it’s a local charity and also because of the tremendous job they do in supporting children and their families from this area.” Little Harbour opened its doors to its first families in December 2011 and is most conveniently situated for families who live in Cornwall, Plymouth and parts of South Devon. Little Harbour supports children with life limiting or threatening illnesses and their families with short breaks, respite, palliative care, emergency stays, end of life care and bereavement support. Zoe Partridge, community fundraiser for CHSW said “We are so grateful for this wonderful delivery of Christmas presents for the children and families we support at Little Harbour. Christmas can be a particularly difficult time of year for our families so generous gifts really are appreciated by all.”

Christmas cheer at Porte Rouge Porte Rouge was the first of the three homes to draw their Christmas raffle this year. They had over 120 prizes and raised a brilliant £142.95 towards the resident’s amenities fund. Residents, families and friends enjoyed mulled wine and homemade cakes whilst the draw took place and thank you to everyone who contributed some great prizes and to everyone who bought the raffle tickets. The Old Vicarage at Antony and the Torpoint Nursing Centre held their draws, welcoming family and friends to join the residents on Friday December 23 at The Old Vicarage and Friday December 16 at The Torpoint Nursing Centre. December was a busy time at Torcare with entertainment and preparations for Christmas and the New Year. More details in the next issue. In the meantime have a great New Year from all at Torcare.

Big changes ahead for personal injury claims Richard Harris Solicitors, the specialist personal injury solicitors, celebrated one year in Torpoint on December 14. Richard Harris said: “The move from Cawsand has been a great success in 2016 with many more people in Torpoint choosing to use truly independent specialists rather than their insurer’s tame solicitors or TV companies because word seems to be getting around about how badly the big companies deal with cases”. In 2016 the firm has dealt with cases ranging from arms being amputated, machinery exploding at work, collapsing chairs and industrial dermatitis as well as slips in shops, trips on pavements and road traffic accidents. In 2016 Richard also dealt with a number of claims involving accidents on board RFA ships and RFA and military bases ranging from Scotland to Korea! Reflecting on the year Richard said that many things seemed to be in turmoil in 2016 with Brexit and the US elections but the one thing that didn’t seem to change is that people have accidents but 2017 promises even more turbulent times for personal injury. He recommends that accident victims seek compensation as soon as possible because huge changes are in the offing in 2017. The changes may mean that people won’t be able to claim for personal injury compensation. All personal injury seems to be under attack by the government and the insurance industry. Consultations which close in early January suggest the abolition of damages for ‘minor soft tissue injuries’ and the introduction of a tariff which suggests only £25 for psychological injuries. ‘Minor’ covers suffering that last nine months which seems far from minor. Proposals suggest that people would almost get more for a minute’s train delay than for one whole day of soft tissue injury. It is also proposed that most personal injury claims will be in the small claims court which would mean that virtually no legal costs are recoverable and injured individuals will have to go to court unrepresented and unprotected against the big insurance companies and their solicitors. Although it is claims management companies not solicitors which plague everyone with unwanted
Torpoint physio Sarah Harris is celebrating her first year as a private physiotherapy practice at Trot House in the town centre. Sarah said: “Where has, the last year gone? I can’t quite believe it is a year since the practice opened on December 14 last year! “No-one ever said opening a new business would be easy and it’s certainly had it’s up and downs. Not least juggling work commitments, family and the demands of two growing teenagers.” Torpoint Physio has gone from strength to strength, building a good reputation for offering high quality physiotherapy treatments without having to wait for appointments. Sarah has had lots of support from both immediate family (including the boys), friends and the local community. She would like to thank all the patients for their support and recommendations to other people both locally and further afield. During the last year, in particular in the summer months she had many patients coming in for treatments whilst on holiday. One patient even wanted to take her back ‘up North’ to be their physio. However, Sarah says her roots are firmly grounded in Cornwall. During the last year, she’s treated all ages from the elderly to children, acute injuries to long-standing problems and from heads to toes and everything in between. She uses a wide range of treatment techniques including mobilisations,
manipulation, soft tissue work, acupuncture and much more. Sarah also emphasises the importance of educating patients on how to help themselves to get over the initial injury and to improve their health and fitness long-term. Although always busy, Sarah has made time to attend Pilates training weekends, so she can now include Pilates exercises as part on the patient’s rehabilitation, and also now offers physio-led Pilates teaching on a one to one basis. This means patients can be assessed for areas of weakness, core control and postural problems identified. They can then be taught a Pilates based exercise programme to help restore the body’s postural balance and core control, helping to improve general health and fitness. In the New Year, she may look at offering small classes on a 1:4 ratio as follow-ups. Another development this year is that Samantha Freeman Foot Health Practitioner is now at Trot House offering health care for feet on Tuesdays. Sarah would like to wish readers a healthy and Happy New year but if there are any aches and pains or if you would like advice regarding posture, fitness and health don’t hesitate to call her on 01752 813898 to arrange an appointment. There is no need for a GP referral, no waiting list and an appointment can often be arranged for the same day.

Health Care for Feet texts and calls, the Government seem to be keen to replace solicitors with claims management companies and unregulated advisors. The justification for the reforms reflects the tabloids agenda of the ‘compensation culture’ (but claims have been falling year on year) and exaggerated insurance industry figures for fraud (proven fraud is only half a percent of all Personal Injury cases). The stated aim is that these further reforms will save money for the insurers and will reduce premiums even though the savings from the previous reforms have never been passed on. New look and new name for the Liscawn Inn Breaking with tradition is not always seen as a good thing, but for one owner of a local business, it’s the next step to catapult the business into an exciting future. Since 2013, Gaynor Williams and her team have embarked with gusto to renovate and develop the 14th Century hotel, formerly known as The Liscawn Inn, and have now created a destination that can deliver something South East Cornwall can be truly proud of. Deciding to change the name of a venue that had been around for such a long time was not a decision they took lightly. However, the team felt that a name change would recognise the
tremendous amount of work that has been put in to develop and improve the offered facilities, accommodation & reputation of this newly renovated hotel and restaurant. And so Little Fox Hotel together with Aspects Bar & Restaurant was born, and a grand relaunch party taking place on January will celebrate this. Invites are currently being sent out and the team at Little Fox Hotel would like to encourage all the readers of the Torpoint Advertiser to pop along and see for themselves what treats await them, just outside Crafthole on the B3247. They hope you will agree that they have succeeded in creating a stylish, contemporary atmosphere catering to modern high standards of food and service, without compromising the history and intimacy of the Cornish hospitality provided. Dogs are always welcome, and the uninterrupted views of Dartmoor keep the feel of a treasured timeless gem very much alive. The new Chef de Cuisine of Aspects Restaurant has devised a comprehensive bar menu, serving local, seasonal produce, freshly cooked to order from 12 to 9pm every day – ideal for a quick bite with a pint of quality ale from local breweries and those further afield. Skinners, Sharps and Padstow brewery feature regularly, as well as many other
regional and national guest ales. In addition to the bar menu, an A La Carte menu is served from 6pm, Monday to Saturday. The main restaurant has around 80 covers and can accommodate large and small parties. Booking is advised and food is sourced in line with the seasons creating an ever changing choice. Sloe and blackberries are picked for use from the eight acre estate, as are fresh herbs, selected from the recently cultivated herb garden and the team are developing a vegetable plot so that produce can be as fresh and local as it comes. Fresh fish is brought up direct from the fish market in Looe, and meat and eggs are both local and free range. The play area and beer garden will be further developed in time for the summer season, providing a safe, secure area for youngsters to enjoy, whilst their parents can indulge in a little al fresco wining and dining. Traditional roast dinners are also served every Sunday from 12 noon to 7.30pm and the team are developing a great social calendar so their valued guests can enjoy comedy nights, murder mysteries and great entertainment throughout the year. The individually designed, quality rooms are both spacious & luxurious, perfect for overnight or longer stays. 12 bedrooms accommodate up to 36 guests with a range of deluxe or standard rooms or suites. Not only is the Hotel 4* status, it also boasts a top 5* hygiene rating. Finally, Little Fox Hotel & Aspect Restaurant, named in honour of the glorious views and all the wildlife
that reside within the grounds, is the perfect venue for all kinds of family and corporate functions. Fully licenced for civil weddings, parties can enjoy days of uninterrupted peace and tranquillity in the stunning rural setting. For the latest information, special offers and photos visit the new website www.littlefoxhotel.co.uk launching in January or attend the relaunch party on January 24 to experience this wonderful Hotel for yourself.

The Town Council is acutely aware of the budgetary restraints that Cornwall Council are experiencing that in turn is leading to issues with service delivery in the town. The Town Council has already taken over the weed spraying operation around roads and pavements and will extend this in 2017 to include footways that link roads.
Partnership which is holding a summer events festival in Thanckes Park during 2017. A new Community Interest Company (CIC) will be formed to progress further the Coastal Community Town (CCT) initiative that will engage with Torpoint Town Council and parish councils on the Rame peninsula to encourage economic activity and infrastructure projects.
For example, the footways between Park Road and the service lane and Hamoaze Road and Carbeile Road. The Town Council is currently maintaining Benodet, Rendel and Sparrow Parks and is also reviewing further improvements in the 2017-18 budget in other parks that would become part of a devolution package. Additionally the Council has entered into negotiations to take over the redundant tennis courts in Thanckes Park and also the small park in Rowe Street. The Town Council has also appointed an enforcement officer who can issue fixed
penalty notices for dog fouling and fly tipping and urge residents to report incidents. The Town Council will also be supporting the Torpoint Town
It is also anticipated that strong links will be forged with Plymouth City Council for a consolidated approach to benefit both sides of the Tamar. The Town Council has also supported further investment to engage planning consultants to work with the Neighbourhood Development Plan team and produce integrated policies as part of the development strategy.
Keep clear of the loan sharks At this time of year people feel under pressure to overspend with many having to borrow more than they can afford in order to pay for Christmas. With banks and building societies becoming more choosy about their borrowers, Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards are warning local residents not to fall prey to illegal money lenders; Loan Sharks. Loan Sharks are unregulated and often give cash loans without any paper work and charge extortionate interest rates. When the New Year arrives and you struggle to make the repayments
they may use violence, threats and intimidation, to ensure you keep paying them. Chris Pauling managing director of Furniss (Proper Cornish) Ltd stated: “During the festive season, which should be a happy family experience, many families have been affected by unscrupulous money lenders. We are proud to be able to support the Illegal Money Lending Team in distributing hampers for those that have been affected.” The food has been labelled with the Loan Shark logo and contains details of how to get help and advice if people are bitten by a loan shark.
Geoff Brown, Cabinet Member for Communities said “I am really proud of the work that Trading Standards has been doing to stop the work of Loan Sharks in Cornwall. Loan Sharks bring fear and intimidation into the homes of their victims and many families do not realize the loans are unenforceable and that help is available.” If you think you are in debt to a loan shark, or would like to report one, you can contact the Illegal Money Lending Team for specialist advice in confidence: Call: 0300 555 2222 (local call rate, 24 hour helpline)

Big night in Kingsand Over 200 parents and children gathered in the Kingsand with Rame Community Hall to celebrate the switching on of the Kingsand Christmas Lights and join in the carol singing. The lights had been put up by Gary Farrer and his team, and following a loud countdown, were switched on by Dave Barker and Graham Visick. Having run the Christmas Lights for 12 years, Graham has handed that task on, and it was felt appropriate that he should switch on the lights this time. After much excitement with children around the tree, everyone returned to the hall, where Steven Lacey on the organ and Vanessa on flute led the
dozen or so Christmas carols, one of which, Away In A Manger was superbly sung by an audience-choir of local children. This event is promoted by the Hall’s Management Committee, as a thank you for the community’s support throughout the year. The superb hot mulled wine served in the hall, was from a recipe given twelve years ago by Sir John Gray, on the condition that it was kept secret. The secret ‘infusion’, prepared a month ago, was ‘gently’ mixed with just 36 bottles of wine and three bottles of brandy and gently warmed in the hall’s recently upgraded kitchen. Advertiser January 2017 9 By Father Ian Hellyer Roman Catholic Priest
Light in the darkness Many people find the winter months a difficult time. The outer gloom encouraging an inner gloomy disposition. It is known that some people suffer from seasonal affected disorder, appropriately called SAD. But it is not only those who suffer with this sort of depression – many people find the winter just a bit too gloomy, so any way of brightening it up is embraced with gusto. One example of this is the unveiling of Christmas lights many weeks before Christmas itself. Although the tradition of adorning homes with sparkly and glistening decorations originates in Christianity, in this country, many or most of those who do this just want a bit of cheering up, rather than wanting to express a religious sentiment. In my own family we hold back on adorning our home with all that glistens and sparkles until Christmas Eve itself and it also means we keep up our decorations into the New Year and until after the January 6 when we celebrate Epiphany and the coming of the Wise Men to Jesus. In February we celebrate ‘Candlemas’ – another excuse to light candles and gaze at the Christmas nativity scene! The traditional Christian festivals during winter contain a wisdom responding to our human need for light. As spring approaches, the human spirit rejoices at the growing
light and with it, the expectation of new life. The peculiar truth is though, that in order to experience the glory of the approach of spring, we must endure a winter. This cycle of darkness and light, a cycle of gloom preceding brightness, brings a little kernel of wisdom for life in general. Often there is no growth or new life in our lives without some sort of trial or experience of darkness. Childbirth is an awesome example of this wisdom. The wonder of a new-born baby is preceded by months of discomfort and sometimes outright misery, and that’s not mentioning the delivery! But when the baby is born, the trial and misery fades at the joy of new life. I am thinking of this now because I became a grandfather for the first time and the child will be born in the first half of 2017. Watching the human trial from more of a distance I can now be a bit more philosophical – although my daughter isn’t too interested in the philosophy when she’s feeling nauseous or unable to sleep. If perhaps you are in the midst of a time of difficulty or suffering you might be able to take some comfort from this wisdom – new life and hope is preceded often by darkness or gloom. Take heart for the spring time may well be around the corner. I wish you every blessing for the New Year.

Thousands of children in Cornwall take part in Bloodhound project More than 3,500 children from 94 schools across Cornwall have registered to take part in a model rocket car competition being staged as part of the BLOODHOUND Project. Registrations for the Race for the Line, Micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition have officially closed and Rachel Delourme, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Advisor at Cornwall Council, is excited to see so many local children applying to taking part. “The BLOODHOUND Project is using a 1,000mph world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to enjoy, explore and get involved in STEM “ she said. “We’re delighted that this project has inspired so many local schools, children, adults and local businesses to get involved. This is a great opportunity to get students excited about STEM, to work as a team and get hands on experience of programming and aerodynamics in one of the most fun ways possible. “So far we have recruited 3,672 children from 94 schools, including children electively home educated. We also have 10 ambassadors and 20 race volunteers. “Software Cornwall is providing free teacher training on programming Micro:bits and Newquay Tretherras and St Columb Minor School will be working together to offer expertise in Python programming and C#. They already have experience running primary days using Lego EV robots and Newquay Tretherras is one of the few centres in Cornwall to offer A Level Computer Science, so we’re really excited to have them both on board.’ Children from schools across Cornwall will compete as part of 918 teams at approximately five race HUBs. The goal is simple – the two fastest primary and

Illustration by Su Hillman, President of Wilcove WI
Wilcove WI held their first Christmas Carol Service at Maryfield Church on Friday December 16. There was a warm welcome for all visitors, including many from other local WI groups. The service was led by the Revd Canon Lynn Parker and everyone enjoyed singing favourite carols and listening to the choir. Refreshments of mulled wine and home made mince pies were provided after the service. The next meeting of Wilcove WI will be on Tuesday January 17, at 7.30 pm in Cove Hall, Wilcove. The speaker, Heather Hunt, will endeavour to demonstrate to everyone that ‘Getting arty makes you happier’. There will be a chance to try this out with some practical experience during the meeting. We will also be voting on the proposed national WI resolutions to go forward and discussing our local programme for 2017. As always, new members are welcome to join us at this meeting.

with local partners to bring this project to Cornwall to help meet this priority and to encourage more of our young people into STEM related subjects. Councillor Andrew Wallis, the Council’s Lead Member for Young People, said ‘Cornwall is very lucky in that BLOODHOUND is coming here to do some major testing before it embarks on its journey to South Africa. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Cornwall to be part of that history. It will be the chance to see firsthand engineering at the highest level. “I hope by BLOODHOUND coming to Cornwall, it will inspire young people to be engineers of the future.’ More information about the project is available from www.bloodhoundssc.com/education

Tracking back in time with new book from Bernard Mills Painstakingly researched, Bernard Mills’s second volume of Backtracking Then & Now, takes readers on a railway journey around the western reaches of Plymouth and beyond. It’s a fine companion to the last tome – produced by Pen & Ink Publishing in 2013 – which focused on the east around Friary, Laira and the Plym. Once again it should appeal to those interested in local history and the changing industrial landscape, whether or not they are railway enthusiasts. The route this time starts at Plymouth’s North Road Station and goes west to the Cornwall Loop Triangle and into Millbay and the docks. Returning to the Cornwall Loop Junction it follows the former GWR main line through the western suburbs to the River Tamar, across Brunel’s magnificent bridge to Saltash Station. It then goes out on the Tamar Road Bridge and follows the former LSWR route back through St Budeaux, and the now completely expunged route through Weston Mill and Ford to Devonport Junction. What is so obvious about this account is not only Bernard’s eye for detail but his passion for his subject – this is a very personal account. Having had the amazing foresight to record the scene on his camera as Beeching was making his cuts 50 years ago, it is to some 150 of these locations that he has returned to capture the same scene today ... lamenting many of the dramatic changes that have occurred along the way. However, Bernard delights in recalling experiences from his
working life on the railway and he interweaves them into the narrative. This gives the book personality, charm and a life beyond the factual Then and Now descriptions. As well as learning about his time as a railway clerk at Saltash Station we discover how he was encouraged to familiarise himself with the workings of the signal box at Keyham Station Signal Box which, as it happens, was very close to where his love affair with trains began: “The first decade of my life was spent in Victory Street, with only Fleet Street in between home and the railway line,” he writes. “When I was in the pushchair my grandfather, William Mills, took me here to watch the trains go by and that, quite simply, is how it all started...”

to secure match funding from other grant providers, boosting their value many times over and greatly increasing their benefit to local communities. “Some councillors have already committed all their funding to projects this year, but there’s still funding available in some areas. Get in touch with your local Cornwall councillor to find out whether they can support an application from your group.” Not for profit groups can apply for Community Chest grants of between £100 and £1,000. Details are available on the council’s Community Chest page and the closing date for applications is 17 February 2017. Some of the groups that have received Community Chest grants this year include:

chairman of non-league Corby Town FC. “Football is still a beautiful game, but with spoilt young men earning more in a week than most people do in ten years and the ever increasing scandal and corruption stories, the game is constantly under scrutiny. Unless you have been inside the game it is hard to imagine the everyday life of a professional footballer. “Like most writers I just started with asking myself ‘what if?’ and used my knowledge of how football clubs operate to bring the story to life. When I lived in Northamptonshire I was heavily involved in football management and have many friends in the game.” Dangerous Score (New Generation Publishing) is Mike Bearcroft’s debut novel and he is now taking bookings for speaker engagements in 2017. Grants available for community groups Hundreds of voluntary and community groups in Cornwall have benefited from Cornwall Council Community Chest grants worth £115,000 over the last seven months. Others could benefit if they apply before the closing date of February 17 2017. Every year each of Cornwall Council’s 123 councillors has a total fund of £2,000 to support projects run by not for profit groups in their local area. So far this year they have handed out 440 grants that have benefited a wide range of people and activities from community facilities and environmental projects to schemes promoting healthy living, music and sport. Cornwall councillors have given grants towards everything from lawn mowers for recreation pitches to a night-time parade of illuminated bicycles. Many groups have used the grants to attract match funding, leading to over £1.9m more pouring in to local projects and organisations. Jeremy Rowe, Cornwall Council Localism Portfolio Holder, said: “Community Chest grants support a wide range of projects and groups that make a difference to so many individuals and communities across Cornwall. “Many of Cornwall’s voluntary and community groups use these small grants

CORNISH AUTHOR PENS FOOTBALL MURDER MYSTERY
Cornwall-based actor and author Mike Bearcroft has published a murder mystery that lifts the lid on the crazy world of professional football. Mr Bearcroft, a popular speaker at clubs and societies in Devon and Cornwall, has drawn on his inside knowledge of the game to create a fictional player who scores the goal that takes his team into the football league. But in the novel ‘Dangerous Score’ he goes from hero to villain overnight after he is linked to a missing girl and the story takes him on a roller-coaster ride of football, mystery, love, crime and even more football. Mr Bearcroft, who lives in Mevagissey and is moving to Devoran in December 2016, started writing after retiring at the age of 50 from a business career. His acting credits include Peak Practice, Casualty and Brum and he has directed musical theatre shows across the UK. He said: “I’ve had a varied career and that has enabled me to talk on a number of
