Lions charter celebration is a glittering occasion

Torpoint and Rame Peninsular Lions club held their 29th Charter dinner at the Torpoint Council Hall hosted by Lion President Steve Murray in February. Guests included the current District Governor 105 SW, Alan Good and his wife Sandra, Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn and his wife Val, Sheryll Murray, MP Lion President of the Westminster Lions Club, and other past District Governors along with visiting Lion Presidents and members with their guests. In all a total of 80 attended. The evening started with a lovely meal prepared by Maria Trethewey and her catering team which was followed by the traditional speeches by Lion President Steve, District Governor Alan Good and Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn. Following the speeches awards were given of long service chevrons which were presented to three club members from the District Governor . Carina Davis, a representative from St Luke’s Hospice, was presented with a donation cheque for £1000. This was in memory of a very dear and well liked Lion, Mike Neder. St Luke’s Hospice was instrumental in caring for Mike during his last months. Carina thanked the club for the generous donation and said how much it would go to help others. Flowers were then presented to VIP guests after which a grand draw took place. Formalities over, guests were entertained by live music by ‘Yorkie’ and a 15 minute interval from the dancing saw a presentation from MP Sheryll Murray of a Westminster branded bottle of whisky signed by David Cameron to the club for a fundraising ‘shove a pound nearest the bottle’ win. Sheryll with her first attempt went almost right up to the bottle so after many attempts by all who wanted to win the bottle which raised a good amount for the Lions, Sheryll was deemed the winner but re- donated it for a further fundraising event. A great time was had by everyone which proves Lions can have fun! On Saturday March 14 Lions of the South West will celebrate their 45th annual convention. This is when we elect our District Governor and their cabinet team for 2015/16, with the Lions fiscal year running from July 1 until June 30. Although the convention is our annual general meeting we also have lots of fun over the weekend with a themed fancy dress evening on the Friday and a banquet on the Saturday evening after the business Sheryll Murray MP and Westminster meetings. Lions Club President celebrates We expect up to 250 winning the Westminster special bottle of whisky with Lyn Murray Lion Lions to attend the meeting and usually President’s wife around 180 attending the ball. It is a very good weekend to meet up with old friends from around the district and to have some fun time. At the convention, Maria Trethewey (centre) with her staff after judging for the cooking and serving up a great dinner well district photo competition done Maria will take place

Bailey we didn’t know anything about it. The British Heart Foundation has helped us in the past and so has the Royal British Legion, who sent us away on a break after Bailey had his heart surgery to help us get

over the stress. “ The event was organised by the establishment’s PT department. Petty Officer (PT) ‘Buster’ Brown said: “This was all about raising money and awareness and

ultimately supporting those with heart problems, like little Bailey. It was good that so many people gave up their lunchtime to take part by either walking, running and even spacehopping around the one mile course.”

Beth’s poetry from the heart Year 12 Torpoint Community College student, Beth Lancaster, has recently taken part in the county heats of the UK Poetry By Heart competition at Truro Community Library. She was up against seven other students from schools in Cornwall and the standard was incredibly high. Beth was a credit to the college, reciting with fantastic flow and form three poems – her pre-1914 poem ‘Lucifer in Starlight’ by George Meredith, a post 1914 poem by Denise Riley, ‘A Misremembered Lyric’ and a World War One poem, ‘In Memorium’ by Michael Longley. This final poem of the three was an outstanding recitation emotive and spellbinding. Rachel Bertram, English teacher at the college, said: “I couldn’t have been more proud! Beth battled for first place with a student from Treviglas School, narrowly losing out and finishing as runner-up. “The competition was a huge success and a fantastic evening for all the students taking part. Our sincere congratulations go out to Beth, for all her hard work and commitment throughout the competition. “She was certainly unlucky not to be going forward to take part in the regional heats at Cambridge University in March.”

three parts and played the drums in four different rhythms at the same time with a piece that they had composed themselves. Headteacher, Elisabeth CarneyHaworth said: “Words cannot express how proud I am of them all. The staff have worked incredibly hard to put on this show and the children simply shone! “It was lovely to be able to show their enthusiasm and talent to the whole community of Torpoint who should be equally proud of the children and the school. Many people were moved to tears they were so impressed with the level of performance.”

Sailors and civilian staff at HMS Raleigh have braved the cold weather to walk or run a mile around the Royal Navy training base in Torpoint, to raise money for charity. The group of around 60, which included some trainees, dressed in red in support of the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Wear It. Beat It.’ campaign and each paid a £1 for the pleasure. Among those showing their support was Petty Officer Bruce Hall, a seamanship instructor at the base, his wife Leanne and their son Bailey, aged two and a half, who was born with a rare heart condition. Bailey was pushed around the establishment in his pram. He first underwent open heart surgery aged just six months and faces more operations in the future. Leanne Bailey said: “Events like this are very important because it raises awareness of all the heart conditions out there, especially in children because it is so rare. Before we had

Backing for solar farm proposal

Millbrook Parish Council has given its blessing to proposals for a solar farm at Mendennick. The solar farm will be developed by REG Solarpower, a renewable energy company based in Cornwall. Following feedback from local residents and Cornwall Council, the company amended the site design to remove the eastern field from its proposals, among other revisions to improve the site design. An application has now been submitted to Cornwall Council under planning reference PA14/11090. The Mendennick site is located next to the B3247, 3.5km southwest of Torpoint, 1.5km northwest of Millbrook, 1.1km northeast of Freathy and 350m south of St. John. REG Solarpower believe that this site has the potential to generate much needed safe, clean

renewable energy on the Rame Peninsula. Revised proposals at Mendennick include: • An approx. 2MW solar farm that could generate, on average, enough electricity to power around 400 homes annually • The site would be well screened by existing hedgerows, as well as additional infill planting • The site would continue to be available for sheep grazing (the current use on the majority of the site) • The panels used can be completely removed after their operational life • A soil survey was undertaken in May 2014. The panels will only be placed on Grade 3B and lower land, not ‘best and most versatile’ land for crop growing.

Torpoint Wives focus on work of Red Cross

Secretary of Churches Together in Torpoint and District

Learning to ‘be still’

Ryan Jackson of the Red Cross was guest speaker at the Torpoint Wives Group in January, which was held at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint. Prior to his talk he was presented with a cheque for £150 collected last year by the wives for the charity. His talk incorporated the diversity of the charity, which currently has 360 shops nationwide, 22 of which are in the south west, manned mainly by volunteers with a salaried manager. He said that the Red Cross provides help in emergencies such as floods, storms, and disasters at home and abroad. The charity also supports those in war zones, suffering disease and malnutrition. Help in the home for vulnerable people is also provided, with volunteers dropping in for a chat and cup of tea with lonely people. The Red Cross also provides support for refugees, helping them to settle in a new country and organising basic essentials. The charity also helps families who have been separated by war, working to find family members and reunite them. Ryan’s enthusiasm and enjoyment for his job shone through his talk and after many questions from the wives, Eve Oates, chairperson, gave the vote of thanks.

Many a parent and teacher have uttered that phrase ‘Sit still.’ Reaction to someone fidgeting and not concentrating or paying attention. It is annoying to teacher and parent alike to find ones charges wriggling about when you want them to think and understand some difficult point perhaps. In a poem called Ash Wednesday T S Eliot wrote ‘Teach us to sit still.’ Sitting still may be important sometimes but it does seem a bit excessive to ask God to teach us the knack. But that is not what Eliot meant. We need to read the words that come before those words. He writes in his poem: ‘Teach us to care and not to care. Teach us to sit still.’ That is pretty much a contradiction too isn’t it? Care is an interesting word though. Care can be a noun and refer to our worries, our troubles our cares. But it can also be a verb and describe a person’s reaction to need; one’s own need or a response to someone in need of attention and care. It can therefore be about compassion and our reaction to those around us. Eliot is asking God to teach us to care about the things we can affect but also teach us not to care about those things we can’t possibly do anything about. We have all done it. Fussed and

worried about those things we cannot change and unfortunately perhaps do not do enough about those things we can change. Perhaps when we sort out the difference between them we shall be able to follow the next line and sit still and even more, as the psalm has it “Be still, and know that I am God.” The serenity prayer says it beautifully too. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. Almighty God, please help us to care and not to care. Teach us to sit still. Amen The views expressed here do not necessarily express the views of all members of Churches Together

Torpoint community working in partnership Thirty students from Torpoint Community College took part in First Aid training at HMS Raleigh and a kit packing presentation by Cotswold Outdoors at the Torpoint Town Council offices on Saturday February 7 as part of their mandatory training for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Ten Tors. The college would like to pass on a huge thank you to HMS Raleigh, Torpoint Town Council and Cotswold Outdoor for giving their time freely to assist with this vital part of the student’s training. The day was a massive success, the experience is something that the students will always remember

and will stand them in good stead for their future. Thank you also to all the students who took part for being so well behaved and a great credit to themselves and the college, we are extremely proud of them. The seven Navy staff involved from HMS Raleigh and Cotswold Outdoors commented that they had also enjoyed the day and that it was good to meet and be involved with the local community. Mrs Lynn Trotter, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award manager and PA to the Headteacher at Torpoint Community College said: “The involvement from HMS Raleigh and the Torpoint Town Council

shows how well the Torpoint community works in partnership together and I am sure this will continue to grow.” The students were split into two groups and undertook training on how to treat burns, carrying out CPR and placing the casualty in the recovery position. Great fun was had on how to put on bandages and arrest any bleeding, how to spot and treat hyperthermia and heat exhaustion and how to look after your feet. At the end of the training, students had fake wounds applied which looked extremely realistic and gory! – the students loved it (and the staff!!). In the afternoon students were taken to Torpoint Town Council Hall, which the college was kindly given use of by the Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn, where Cotswold Outdoors gave a presentation on what kit to take on expeditions and how to best pack your rucksack. Torpoint Community College sixth former, Tom Hicks, who has successfully completed his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and is now doing his Gold and has taken part in Ten Tors, was also there to assist, as he works at Cotswold on a Saturday. It was great to see, especially as no doubt Tom’s outdoor training and pursuits at Torpoint Community College helped to secure his part-time employment!! All the students who took part received a certificate and a great day was had by all.

Celebrating Valentine’s Here at the Torpoint Nursing Centre we could not let February and therefore Valentine’s Day, go without marking the occasion. On Friday February 13 we held a Valentine’s raffle which raised £125 and we also had a cake stall Valentine’s theme of course and raised £39. We were all very busy making Valentine’s decorations for the raffle table and bunting for the cake stall. This money will be added to the total in the Residents Amenities fund and thanks to all the residents, their families and the staff who contributed, baked and gave their time. Our next raffle will be the Easter Raffle but in the meantime we will be celebrating Mother’s Day on Sunday March 15 with a cream tea to which all the residents and their families are invited.

MONTHLY FIGURES In January the Control Room recorded 161 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula. A small number of these were duplicate incidents. Police attended a number of domestic incidents where no specific offences had occurred, but help was provided at the scene, and other incidents where vulnerable children and adults were identified as requiring help from other agencies. Calls included 39 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of those continue to be neighbour disputes; some were complaints about Facebook disputes, others about noise and vehicles These calls also included the 59 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula.

News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team with Sergeant Angela Crow, Neighbourhood Team Leader

After watching a short film about genocide across the world, and hearing the story of one holocaust survivor, the Cadets walked through the display showing the eight steps which result in genocide. They then had an opportunity to speak with community partners about different types of hate crime. A very thought-provoking and moving experience which ended in the cadets writing messages of hope pinned on to a ‘Tree of Light.’

NEIL WILL BE SADLY MISSED

Following the sad death of my son Neil ‘Binzo’ Bartley, I would like to thank all Neil’s family, friends and colleagues for the kind messages of condolences, sympathy cards and donations to Macmillan Cancer Charity. I have drawn great comfort from knowing how well liked and respected Neil was, and whilst I know he will be sadly missed by so many, the lovely tributes and memories that have been shared about Neil ensure he will never be forgotten. I am very proud at what he achieved throughout his life and I know his Mum, Ellen would have been too. Many thanks also to Pidgens Funeral Directors, Gloria Courts at Cornerstone Church for the heartfelt funeral service and Paul Whitworth from Torpoint Athletic FC who paid such a fitting tribute to Neil. Hello and welcome to the monthly bulletin. I know that you may have seen various reports in the media about the further savings that Devon and Cornwall Police have to make, and the potential impact this will have on jobs. I can only tell you that, as far as I know, no definite decisions have been made about which roles might be affected. While there is no doubt that there are challenging times ahead, I also wanted to remind you that your local policing team remains committed to doing the best job we possibly can. As soon as I have any definite updates I will let you know. Below are the details of another report about policing which you might find of interest. Sorry, dog fouling again! Torpoint Town Council has a Dog Enforcement Officer so I would encourage all Torpoint residents to now please help him to keep our streets clean. Please report dog fouling to either Cornwall Council telephone 0300 1234 212 or at the Torpoint Town Council Offices with the details shown below. We will investigate all complaints that are received - although the level of service that we can provide will obviously vary depending upon the quality of information that is provided. For example we would be in a better position to take action should you be able to provide a full description of what happened, including date, time, location, what you witnessed, description of the dog/owner and as much information as possible about the incident - also any information regarding the offender - which could include name/address (if known), vehicle registration number or any other identifying feature. Dog fouling is one of the biggest complaints we get from the people of Torpoint so we must all work together to stamp it out. Armed Forces Day. As I reported last month, plans for Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day here in Torpoint on Saturday June 20 are progressing well. The day will start at 11 am with a Veteran’s Parade and will end at 10pm with fireworks. A full day of displays, demonstrations and music is on the programme to enable members of the public from across the region to meet and show their support for our Armed Forces, past, present and future. So far we have commitment from HMS Raleigh plus Cadets and Reserve Forces from around the area who are bringing a range of displays and demonstrations to entertain the crowd. We are engaged with the RAF and Army who are also keen to support the event. Gav & The Grimnotes and Company B Jazz Band is our headline acts for the evening. Veterans who want to take part in the parade should contact Colin Prideaux, 01752 813182 or email c.prideaux182@btinternet.com. Businesses and other organisations who want to be involved should contact Kim Brownhill, email abrown7357@aol.com. We are also looking for a pool of manpower to help the day run smoothly, so if you would like to support the day in this way please pop into the Council Office or let Kim or me know. You can follow and keep updated with plans for the day on Facebook (Cornwall’s Armed Forces Day) and Twitter (Cornwall Afd). Thank you to John & Pat Tivnan and Kim & Andy Brownhill for presenting the Town Council with a Poppy from the Tower of London’s famous dry moat which was filled with over 800,000 ceramic poppies, creating a powerful visual commemoration for the First World War Centenary. The Poppy will be mounted on the wall in the Council Chambers for all to see. Congratulations to my wife Val on being awarded the Chief Scout’s Silver Acorn Award for exceptional service to the 2nd Torpoint Scout Group for almost 36years. 10 Advertiser March 2015 WILCOVE

History, heritage & celebrations: The first meeting of 2015 was a busy one for the ladies of Wilcove WI as we took the opportunity to catch-up after Christmas/New Year, ‘meet and greet’ new members; listen to our speaker and work through a very full first agenda. 2015 is truly going to be a memorable WI Centenary year with many great events and activities for our members to participate in. Our first speaker for 2015 was Cliff Cooper who certainly captured interest as he outlined how Torpoint was developed in the 1780s to house a burgeoning dockyard workforce living on “Hogs” (ships) anchored on the River Tamar. Recognising the need to release land for housing on a waterside section of the Anthony Estate nobleman and landowner; Reginald Carew Pole sold off a field called ‘Tar Point’ and here the first town houses were built. To discover more about the fascinating history of Torpoint a book entitled; “The making of Cornish Town..Torpoint & Neighbourhood through two hundred years” is recommended by Cliff. The book and details about the work and activities of the Torpoint archive team can be accessed via: Torpoint Council Chambers webpage: www.torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk /menu_page.php?id=3 By the time this article goes to press the following events will have taken place. On Monday February 23 the WI Centenary Baton arrived in South East Cornwall and was transported In style by vintage car, the local WI’s stopping briefly at each for a photo opportunity. The Wilcove WI ladies greeted the baton at a member’s historic cottage located in central Wilcove. In the evening the ladies of the Torpoint WI kindly hosted a function at St James Church, Torpoint complete with Cornish Fayre and entertainment from local singers The Ferryboaters. On Tuesday February 24 the ladies of Trematon WI kindly hosted a coffee morning, cake cutting ceremony and lunch along with arranging for the baton to be transported by vintage bus from Cornwall across the Tamar Bridge and into Devon. Once on the Devon side of the border the baton was received by members of the Devon WIs in the presence of notable dignitaries and a Royal Navy guard of honour. It was a great privilege to have received the baton in South East Cornwall during its journey throughout the United Kingdom and heartfelt thanks are extended to all those individuals and organisations that ensured that the local baton celebrations were such a success. In February Wilcove WI members elected a new committee several key members having stepped down at the end of their term in office. The Wilcove WI ladies would like to publically thank Sue Walters (President), Linda Shelton (Secretary), Lynn Vickery (Treasurer) and Leisha Champion (Programme editor) for the personal time they have dedicated to their duties

and hope that they will continue to enjoy our future events and activities without the responsibilities of office. On March 24 Wilcove WI ladies will take time out to relax and celebrate their 65th birthday at an evening function at Wilcove Village Hall and an invitation for the event is being extended to past and present members. Our speaker for April will be Barbara Smith (SSAFA Ambassador) who will talk about the HM Forces charity SSAFA www.ssafa.org.uk/ We look forward to the year ahead and invite interested or new members to join us at our monthly meetings and periodic events. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall.

TORPOINT

‘Deadlier than the Male?’ was the question asked by our speaker for the evening, Mrs Kristin Hunt. The phrase was from Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘Female of the Species’ and was the topic for a most thought-provoking insight into women who committed crime. Mrs Hunt had spent a lot of time studying criminology and in particular women in prison and she gave us many interesting facts and the reasons why there were differences between crimes committed by women and men. After hearing Mrs Hunt’s talk it gave us all a lot of food for thought on this subject. Rosemary welcomed members and visitors to the first meeting of the year and thanked everyone for their help with the Birthday Party evening and also for the Christmas Party, in particular Sue for her ‘special’ role, Jean for the wonderful table decorations and Meryl for arranging the brilliant raffle. It was agreed that the proceeds of the raffle be donated to help the Chernobyl children with their activities when they come to visit Torpoint. Rosemary reminded members that the subscription is due this month. Nominations for Committee were requested and handed in. Enid was delighted to receive the winning trophy for the best Christmas Tree decorated by the local Arthritis Research Group in the Christmas Tree competition held in St James Church in December. Discussion took place concerning the setting-up of a craft group in the Church Hall. possibly on a Tuesday afternoon, in order for members to get together and to pass on craft skills. Competition Results - Competition ‘Letter A’ - 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Meryl Houghton, 3rd Betty Tarrant and ‘Flower of the Month’ 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Enid Gaved and equal 3rd Betty Tarrant and Sue Hale.

Singers raised £2600 for Jeremiah’s Journey The Torpoint Lady Singers held their annual meeting on February 9 at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint. Chair Chris Trethewey reported that 2014 had been a good year, with the choir fulfilling 21 engagements of a wide and varied range. These included singing at concerts for charity, a wedding, a stately home, coffee mornings and, sadly, two funerals. The annual 22nd 12 hour singathon for Jeremiah’s Journey proved to be the best ever with Jeremiah Bear cheering choir members on when voices and feet were suffering. A magnificent £2600 was raised for the charity. This year’s chosen charity

house

is for ‘Sarcoma,’ a soft tissue cancer which is very relevant to the choir as one of its members is recovering from the disease, as is a little boy called Oliver from Crafthole. He was diagnosed when he was 14 months old and after two operations is now three and a half and will be attending school soon. Musical director Sylvia Fraser thanked the choir for their support and friendship, not only to her, but also to each other, which made her job enjoyable. She also extended thanks to accompanist Sue Westwell, for her immense contribution to the choir, loyalty and commitment. Lin Curtis, deputy musical director, was thanked for

officiating at extra practices. Sarah Casey, fund raising chair for many years, who has retired because of work and family commitments, was presented with a basket of flowers. She will be a very hard act to follow. Chris paid special tribute to secretary Jennie Reid for her efficiency in all her work, as Chris herself had been ill during the year. Engagements for 2015 have been confirmed and members of the choir are looking forward to performing in Wales in May. Officers and committee were re-elected ‘en bloc’ and will be planning a happy and successful year, enjoying their singing and raising money for charity. New members are always welcome.
