Campaign for action on menace of marine litter

Beach protest has plenty of bottle (tops!) Scores of people from the Rame Peninsula and further afield descended on Tregonhawke Beach at Whitsand in April for a spectacular protest about the plastic dumped on local beaches. In a period of just three months a staggering total of 65,000 plastic bottle tops were collected by local volunteers and made into a giant bottle chain which was carried across Tregonhawke Beach to highlight the problems of marine litter. Nearly a third of the bottle tops were collected along Whitsand Bay and from beaches around Newquay thanks to an intensive effort by volunteers. The event, which was organised by Claire Wallestein and members of Rame Peninsula Beach Care attracted huge media coverage on TV, radio and in print.

Rame Peninsula Beach Care is part of a coalition of Cornish organisations and individuals calling on the government for urgent action to tackle the issue of marine litter. In the weeks running up to the protest, scores of people went to the Congregational Hall in Cawsand at the end of March to string all the bottle tops together into a chain - which measured more than a kilometre when finished. Claire Wallestein said: “It’s been a huge amount of hard work, going out in all weathers to collect the tops, lug them in sacks back up cliffs, wash, disinfect and dry them, drill them and string them onto wire.

Blooming successful! Daffodil picking on Mothering Sunday weekend was a great success with children from Torpoint Community College Community Action Through Sport (CATS) turning up to help. They assisted with picking and then selling at Kernow Mill which made the task easier for the Lions and helpers as the second weekend was also the Annual District 105 SW convention which some of the Club’s Lions and partners attended. In all over £1,140 was raised thanks to a great effort all round. Lion Helen did a marvellous job of organising the pickers and distributing the daffs to the various selling points. Many thanks once again to farmer Jeremy Oatey for supplying us with daffodils and to all the venues which allowed us to sell and also those which sold them for us. The district convention is held every year for the appointing of the new district governor and officers and to change or amend any rulings that affect clubs in the area. The convention was held this year at Croyde Bay Holiday resort in North Devon. Although it is a business weekend, there is also fun with a fancy dress evening and a gala dinner on the Saturday after all the business has been attended to. Certificates to winners of the annual photo competition, youth peace poster and young Ambassador of the year are also presented. Our car boot sales have now started at Windy Ridge car park, Trerulefoot roundabout. They will take place every Sunday from 8.45am to 11.45am, weather permitting until the end of October. Thanks once again for the owners of Windy Ridge restaurant for allowing us to use the car park. The car boot will go on each weekend weather permitting until further notice, Toilets will be open in the restaurant and of course if you are hungry bacon butties are always available. Please come along and make some money for yourselves by clearing out all your unwanted items, and by attending, any monies raised by the Lions will go into our charity fund and be used for helping the local community. Prices remain at £5 per vehicle. Traders are also welcome. On to wheelchairs: Torpoint Lions Club have several wheelchairs for short term or longer term loan. Lion Norman Nethercott does a superb job of checking and servicing all the wheelchairs owned by the club. If you are in need of a wheelchair please contact Lion Norman on 01752 812567, a donation on completion of hire is all that we ask. Lion Norman is also busy organising the second concert to be held on October 16 for senior citizens. A presentation evening was held at Antony village hall for the New Year’s day dip cheque and trophy winners for the most monies raised and best fancy dress etc. Thanks to all who braved the elements and fought off hangovers to raise money for their and our charities. Well done all. Two more presentations were made of a multi purpose play and learn with chalkboard easel, one to Carbeile Junior School and one to Play and Learn Together Nursery at the Torpoint Youth and Children Centre.

Torpoint recruit sails through basic training A 25-year-old former nursery nurse from Torpoint has marched out on parade at HMS Raleigh to mark the successful completion of her Royal Navy basic training. Trainee Writer Samantha Haddon embarked on the 10-week training course in January. The course is designed to transform civilians into sailors and culminates with the passing-out-parade attended by family and friends. The former pupil of Torpoint Community College said: “A career in the Royal Navy is something that I’ve wanted for a very long time and I feel that this is the right time for me to join. I’ve really enjoyed my training. I’ve achieved a lot in my time here. The exercise on Dartmoor was a great part of the course and an enjoyable way to put the topics we learnt in the classroom into real life situations. It also showed just how important it is that the team works together.” With the first phase of her training complete Samantha will remain at HMS Raleigh for her specialist training at the Defence Maritime Logistics School. There she will learn how to operate the ship’s clerical systems and the Royal Navy’s rules and regulations on legal matters, pay, welfare, travel and career development procedures. The Royal Navy’s Initial Naval Training course is underpinned by nine Core Maritime Skills that are the foundations of naval life and underpin operational effectiveness. Recruits are taught the basics of Naval discipline and customs. They learn about navigation and are given the chance to take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a waterborne orienteering exercise. Royal Navy personnel can also be called upon to play a vital role in land-based operations, so recruits undergo training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field. Fitness is a key component of the training and is delivered using a disciplined method of military fitness which focuses on developing co-ordination and individual physical strength and endurance. As the course progresses the recruits take part in three extended exercises to test their skills and understanding of the principles they have been taught.

A group of Year 9 Food Technology students from Torpoint Community College have risen to the challenge of crimping traditional Cornish pasties. The students are all following a scheme of learning focused around ‘Cornish Foods’ including traditional Cornish produce, with a heavy emphasis on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients and cooking recipes that showcase these to their best. An expert crimper from Proper Cornish, the UK’s leading Cornish pasty manufacturer based in Bodmin, led the crimping session giving a demonstrated on how to fill, close and crimp a pasty to perfection. The students then had an opportunity to practice their skills before taking part in a “crimp off” where they had to crimp two pasties in two minutes. The final pasties were then judged by Proper Cornish and a prize was awarded for the fastest and neatest crimped pasty within the allocated time. The students will now develop their crimping skills as well as their imagination as they are required to design and make a new flavour pasty that will be judged in two weeks time again by Proper Cornish. A fun, challenging and rewarding lesson was had by all.

Ultrasound in Torpoint The new facility Penntorr Health, opposite HMS Raleigh, has begun its aim to bring hospital care closer to peoples homes. The £2 million pound facility which opened at the start of the year aims to bring hospital consultants and tests out into the community as well as providing home to The Rame Group GP Practice, Physiotherapists, District Nurses, Ambulance Service and allied professionals. The first step towards this took place in April when the Ultrasound service operated by Peninsula Ultrasound ran the first ultrasound appointments from Penntorr. The team at Penntorr hope that further services will be quick to follow and are currently in discussion with other specialties at Derriford Hospital with the hope of providing faster access to specialist services in the local area.

Mayor helps bowling club launch new season The Mayor of Torpoint Councillor Mike Pearn bowled the first bowl of the 2015 lawn bowling season at Torpoint Bowling Club’s official opening in April. He was accompanied by his wife the Lady Mayoress. The President of Torpoint bowling club Len Hawke welcomed the Mayor and thanked the ‘Wednesday and Friday’ members work squads who had made an excellent job of maintaining the green, the surrounds and the clubhouse. The Mayor commented that taking over the lease of the green from the council had worked well for all concerned and that the facilities were in good hands. After the official opening the members had a roll up and the coach and secretary Chris Willing welcomed members of the public who had turned up as part of Cornwall’s ‘Get Active‚‘programme to offer them a taste of the game of bowls. Further to that programme Torpoint Bowling club offers anyone of any ability

Thousands of surveys asking residents for their views on Torpoint and its future have been delivered to homes in the town. Over 3,500 surveys were hand delivered to all Torpoint residences by an army of local volunteers in April. The survey asks residents to share what they like and dislike about Torpoint, what development(s) they would and would not like to see, and is one of the largest public opinion surveys ever undertaken in the town. RNLI lifeguards return to Tasty Easter treats Whitsand Bay in time for May holiday weekend It has been another busy month across the Torcare homes. The residents at Porte Rouge enjoyed an annual Easter raffle in aid of the Residents’ Fund and raised a total of £70. There was an array of delicious homemade Easter cakes and decorated biscuits for all to enjoy and a good time was had by all. Porte Rouge, The Old Vicarage and The Torpoint Nursing Centre residents and families were treated to a fashion show by Bonmarche clothes shop who brought in an assortment of clothing from their new Spring and Summer range and everyone enjoyed the 20 per cent discount. Many of the husbands took the opportunity to spoil their wives and it was a real success. Poslips, our regular entertainers, also visited Porte Rouge for another sing along and we all look forward to the lovely weather and summer arriving.

Torpoint Wives take a journey

The Torpoint Wives met in March at Cornerstone Church, Torpoint to be taken on a photographic journey ‘Here, There and Everywhere’ with an illustrated talk by Keith Mason whose hobby is photography. The first port of call was Ironbridge where a Victorian Village was depicted as it would have been in that era. This was followed by a massive leap across land and seas to China to a colourful flower festival and the grandeur of the Great Wall of China, two popular tourist attractions. By complete contrast the journey returned to rural Devon to exclaim at

the beautiful designs and exquisite handiwork at an ‘Exhibition of Quilts.’ A hop across the English Channel to France to a small village to view intricate wrought iron signs in front of each shop, illustrating local trades such as bakers, butchers and so on. A final stage of the haphazard fascinating journey ended in Venice across the Bridge of Sighs to gaze at the colourful Gondoliers below plying their trade across the lagoon. Chair Eve Oats thanked Keith for a pleasant, enjoyable evening and hoped he would return on another occasion to take the group on another journey.

pensioners’ voice update

Crippling death duties have brought many a hitherto wealthy family to its knees, and so it was with the Edgcumbes. The family-held estate, beginning with Piers in 1491, had been inherited in direct line right through until the last Piers who was killed in the Second World War. Heirs were found in New Zealand but by then the fortune had gone, so by 1971 the Estate management was compelled to hand over the Park to, jointly, Plymouth City and Cornwall County councils. This arrangement was working perfectly satisfactorily, leaving the House and Earl’s Garden still the responsibility of the estate managers. But now, with all councils compelled to make financial cuts, Plymouth and Cornwall have decided to withdraw their £280,000 funding. And to find this amount has now become the top priority of the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe. These facts were explained by their membership secretary, Tony Hutchings when he spoke to the Maker with Rame Pensioners at their meeting in April. He went on to mention that in 1941 the bombs which had devastated the House had also destroyed all the documents relating to the estate. However the current House has been beautifully restored in the style of the original which dated from the 16th Century. Visitors have to pay to visit the House and Earl’s Garden, whereas visitors must have free access to the Park. It would help greatly with the finance of the upkeep if only a small charge could be made, as with up to 3,600 visitors a day this could easily meet the cost of maintaining the cost of running it. Drastic cuts have been made, where there were once 30 gardeners employed, there are now just there and three rangers. The use of

modern machinery has helped, with the Friends funding the buying of a new tractor amongst other equipment. Some income is derived from prestigious events held in the Park, such as the Vintage Car Rally and the Christmas Fair, but income from other functions, such as weddings held in the House is retained by the House. The 500th anniversary of Henry the Eighth granting to Piers Edgcumbe in 1515 the right to ‘empark’ the land, some 800 acres of beautiful countryside in the South-East corner of Cornwall is now due and the Friends are hoping to raise enough funds to create a special garden near the stable block. It is said that the deer which roam the Park – and also feed from our local gardens, where they are not appreciated – are descended from those which the gentry of the middle ages liked to hunt. The Friends are seeking to commemorate these in the Special Garden, and Mr Hutchings is hoping to recruit a few caring souls to join the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, and would be pleased to answer any enquiries on membership on 01752 823 393. He Hutchings was thanked for his interesting talk by the chair Mr Michael, who wished him every success in such a worthwhile cause. Earlier Mr Michael had opened the meeting with the usual hymn and prayer and mentioned that two loyal members, Frank Duke and Joan Hall are ill and are in care and our thoughts are with them. He then said that the holiday to Holme Lacey, with many interesting excursions, had been a great success - especially the exceptional weather. Discussions are already taking place on next year’s Spring Break, with the Nottingham area being mentioned. The next meeting will be on May 14 at 2.30 pm. Anyone over the age of 50 most welcome.

The Crocus Walk fundraiser for Breakthrough Breast Cancer took place in April. The annual 5km countryside walk through Mount Edgecombe Park saw the group of walkers started at the Minnadhu gate at the end ascending up to Maker Church, crossing over the back of Friary Manor then up to Friary Farmhouse before winding their way down the bridle path before coming down Earl’s Drive to finish. All walkers and supporters enjoyed refreshments at Kingsand Community Hall.

Cash boost for Torpoint Rangers

Members of the 1730 club with girls from the Torpoint Ranger Guides receiving the £100 from Frank Holden Torpoint Rangers have been presented with £100 by Frank Holden raised by Torpoint’s 1730 club. A monthly sum of a £100 is awarded each month to local youth groups and is raised by the members of the 1730 club by contributing to the fund. The money is warmly welcomed by the

groups as there is always something they need. This month’s money to the Torpoint Rangers is going towards a trip being organised by group leader June Porter for some high wire activities. The group thanked the 1730 club for making the trip possible.

By Roy Bright Secretary of Churches Together in Torpoint

I was in prison and you found me... We visited Totnes for the day and in our day of discovery we visited the church. There was much to see in this ancient abbey church but I was particularly taken by a wall memorial to Walter Venning. Born in Totnes he travelled and lived and worked in Russia for many years. When he became a committed Christian he took an interest in the Prison Reform Society established in 1815 and on his return to Russia he founded the Prison Society of Russia and devoted much of his time to visiting prisons and seeking to help poor prisoners. He died of Typhus, contracted by a prison visit in St Peterburg. He was buried in St Peterburg where a memorial was also erected by the Russian Prison Society. It is no secret that the church in our country, as it experiences declining attendances and increasing costs, has to work ever harder to survive. The need for the church to survive may not seem very important to many people these days but from the very beginning of the church to today the message of Jesus has changed the world and people. People may have less time for religion these days but the message of Jesus is even more vital now. What is this message? Jesus did not tell us of a God up in heaven but of a God as the sacred in the centre of existence, the holy mystery that is all around us and

within us. God is not somewhere else but right here and everywhere. It is He who prompts and calls and leads us to actions of good and love and faithfulness. He has been the inspiration for so many of our charities. It was God who prompted Walter Venning to care about the plight of poor prisoners; it is God who has prompted those brave people to risk their lives to stem the Ebola epidemic; it is God who inspires some of our own people to go out on Friday and Saturday nights as Street Pastors caring for those in trouble on our streets, or man the phones for the Samaritan organisation. It is easy to criticise the church for its hypocrisy but if we lose the church from our midst, if we lose the source of the message of love that is at the heart of the Gospel, we and all society will be the poorer for it. Churches Together will celebrate the birth of the Church at Rendle Park, near the ferries, on Pentecost Sunday May 24 in an open air service at 3pm. (In St James Church if the weather is poor)

Generous linedancers

Bill’s Babes Linedancers met in March to celebrate their 18th birthday and to present a cheque for £500 to KatieMarie Martin, who has been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in July. Kaite-Marie needs to raise a total of £3500 to cover her camp fees, cost of training, specialist equipment and the actual expedition. The Jamboree will be attended by 30,000 young people camping at the largest youth gathering in the world. Katie has been a scout for four years and an explorer scout for two years. She has achieved the Chief Scout Gold Award. In addition to this Katie is a valued young leader with the Hawks Cub pack. Over the last fifteen months Katie has been busy fundraising along with her team members organising quizzes, craft fayres, bag packs, car washes, recycling stamps and selling Jamboree badges. Katie will be travelling with eighteen Cornish scouts to Kirara-Hama, Yamaguchi City Japan. Katie will have the opportunity to live with a Japanese family after the Jamboree and will travel on the famous bullet train. She comes from a family who have always

given their time freely in supporting community projects in the town. Katie will surely be a fine ambassador for Torpoint and Cornwall as well as it being a fantastic opportunity and experience for her. Katie thanked the dance group for their very generous donation which has helped her cause. Bill’s Babes Linedancers, who meet every Friday at Torpoint Comrades Club have raised an impressive sum of £22,000 since the group was formed in 1997. Originally known as Shirley’s Stompers the group became the Comraders in 2006 and then changed its name in 2011 to Bill’s Babes in memory of Bill Baldwin, one of the group’s founders. Each member pays £1 every week and when £500 has been raised, a donation is then made to a local charity or worthy cause. Charities supported in the past include Cancer Research, Guide Dogs for the Blind, CLIC, NSPCC, Torpoint Youth Club, Children’s Hospice South West, Cornwall Air Ambulance, Torpoint Boxing Club, High Kix Dancers, Torpoint Scouts and Torpoint Trampoline Club.

Wilcove celebrates its 65th birthday in style A special birthday dinner at Cove Hall in Wilcove was attended by members of neighbouring WIs, past members and honoured guest Marjorie Harwood, founder member of Wilcove WI. Sincere thanks are extended to all those individuals who made the evening both a successful and enjoyable event. During the evening the hall came alive to the sound of live music provided by David Mashford while Paddy and her culinary team of volunteers served a fabulous three course meal to the ladies present. No birthday party would be complete without a splendid birthday cake and cards but the real highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the speech given by Marjorie the founder member and the first chair of Wilcove WI. During her speech Marjorie spoke with great passion of the vital role of women in the dockyard during the Second World War, the period when the WI really came into its own.

Founder member Majorie Harwood pictured with current Wilcove WI President Sue and Carina She discussed how in her late twenties she decided to take on the challenge of setting up a Women’s Institute in Wilcove village this being undertaken under the kind guidance of the county organiser who lived in nearby Looe. The inaugural meeting of Wilcove WI was held on the March 18 1950 in the former village hall (since re-built) and the format of the meeting seems to reflect that of many other WIs of the period a focus on friendship, fun and education. Nicknamed Cornwall’s ‘baby WI’ by the county organiser, Marjorie and her dedicated committee appear to have nursed Wilcove WI through both good and difficult times ensuring that even when the village hall went through a period of declining use (due to the move of the youth club to neighbouring Torpoint) the WI continued to provide the women and villagers of Wilcove with craft afternoons, social evenings, fetes, field trips and dances. During her 50 years of WI membership Marjorie held key committee positions as chair, secretary and treasurer and she spoke fondly of her first visit to the annual national WI conference at the Albert Hall and of how when thousands of voices opened proceedings with the singing of Jerusalem she knew ‘she belonged to a strong group of women who worked together for the betterment of their country.’ While the roles of women may have changed since those early days the Women’s Institute has remained resolute in its core values of friendship and fun this being reflected in Marjorie’s closing remark that the presence of friends in our lives ‘sharpen the mind.’ The topic of discussion for the Wilcove WI meeting in May will be the annual resolution ‘Failing to care - assessment in long term care.’ Wilcove WI would like to invite any ladies who are interested in joining the Women’s Institute to join the monthly meetings and chat about what the WI can offer. The group meet at 7.30 pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Cove Hall.

TORPOINT

Rosemary Slee, President welcomed members and visitors to the April meeting and reported that the new Craft Club, which is held on Tuesday afternoons at St James Church, is being very well

supported with everyone learning new skills or just enjoying a cuppa and a chat. Rosemary then introduced speaker Ian Marshall, who gave a very enlightening talk on the Helston Floral Dance. Mr Marshall who was formerly a music teacher at Torpoint School, had written and published a book entitled The Floral Dance and he went on to tell us of the origin of the words and music which were written by a young lady called Katie Moss who, in 1911 and following a holiday in Helston, composed them on her return train journey back to London. Later the same year this was sung firstly by Thorpe Bates and then by Peter Dawson, another popular singer, who made it famous. The Floral Dance, or ‘Furry Dance’ as it is also known has since been recorded by many singers, groups, bands and brass bands, and is very well known today. Mr Marshall played several musical versions for us to listen to. Flora Day is held every year on May 8 and he described the traditional dances, four of which take place on the day, describing the wonderful atmosphere and the magnificent apparel which is worn, including top hats and beautiful dresses. We were all singing the tune to ourselves following Mr Marshall’s very entertaining talk. It was agreed that we would produce a display for the Maryfield Church Flower Festival and Rosemary asked for help with our entry into the Royal Cornwall Show Competition. Members agreed to meet and discuss further their ideas. Rosemary also asked members to help with the Lions Club Fair on May 16. The Competition winners were: Letter ‘D’ 1st Sylvia Fraser, 2nd Enid Gaved, 3rd Jean Morgan and Flower of the Month:- 1st Jean Morgan, 2nd Enid Gaved, 3rd Betty Tarrant. The next meeting Resolution and Members Evening will be held on Wednesday May 27 at 7.30 pm in St James Church Hall and visitors are always welcome. Judy Pride spoke about the vital work of the Children’s Hospice South West at the March meeting. There are three children’s hospices in the South West - Little Bridge House in North Devon, the first hospice which is celebrating 25 years this year, Charlton Farm in North Somerset and Little Harbour in St Austell, which opened four years ago. These three hospices bring vital support to families in the South West who have a life-limited child and provide a loving and caring place for every member of every family who stay with them, making it a place of sanctuary as well as a place of fun. Judy shared about the wonderful work the South West hospices do and everyone agreed that a tour of one of the hospices would be one of our visits this year. Names were taken for the Denman Holiday in November and members were invited to help with our competition entry for the Royal Cornwall Show in June where we will be making a gift box complete with various contents. Rosemary brought along her laptop to show members photographs of the very successful evening we had for the recent hand-over of the WI Centenary Baton. We have received thank you letters from Downderry and Crafthole WI Groups who came along. On April 24 we hosted the Group Meeting at St James Church Hall and the theme for the evening was flowers given by our speaker Julia Smith. We have also agreed to have a cake stall at the Lions Fair to be held in the Council Chambers on Saturday May 16. The competition winners were:- Letter ‘C’ 1st Nell Nicholas, 2nd Sue Hale and 3rd Enid Gaved. Flower of the month: 1st Connie Hamblin, 2nd Sue Hale and 3rd Jean Morgan.

After being based in Cawsand for 10 years, specialist personal injury solicitors Richard Harris will be moving to premises in Fore Street, Torpoint within the next few months. The firm has bought the former Trot Inn pub which was closed down by its previous owners and sold by a national pub chain on the basis that the licence was not transferred to be converted to a non-pub use. Completion took place at the end of March and the property is now in the process of being renovated and converted to a suite of offices. The firm of solicitors will move in when all the building work has been completed and will hopefully be in their new premises by the autumn. Richard Harris said: “We are a specialist personal injury firm and that is likely to continue to be our core work, but in the long term we hope to branch out to offer a wider range of services depending upon demand and the legal environment. “In due course we’re likely to be looking for experienced legal staff in other areas of the law or possibly connections with other firms. “We would be open to new ideas as to ways of working and would welcome preliminary enquiries from experienced, senior fee earning staff particularly on a part-time basis and possibly to fit in with approaching retirement or child care needs.” Although a completely separate business, Richard’s wife Sarah, well-known in Torpoint for being the local physiotherapist for 22 years will also be setting up a physiotherapy practice offering private physiotherapy treatment when the building has been converted. Richard added: “After 10 successful years of operating from offices in Cawsand, I am looking forward to the change and being part of Torpoint with superb Dockyard views as well!” For the next few months Richard Harris can continue to be contacted on 01752 829103 or rh@ rhsols.co.uk or at 4 Coombe Park Close Practice, Cawsand, Cornwall PL10 1PW.

On the Beat

Inspector Julian Morris has taken over as Sector Inspector for Liskeard. He initially joined West Mercia Police in 1993 before transferring to Devon and Cornwall in 1999. He has worked in a number of different roles in Bude, St Austell, Launceston and most recently as a critical incident manager across the county. Inspector Morris said: “In taking this role I am looking forward to working with my staff and our partner agencies to reduce crime and anti social behaviour in the sector, safeguard vulnerable people and ensure that the sector is an enjoyable place to live, work and visit for all. “Despite some austere times I have already been impressed with the hard work put in by my staff and feel fortunate to be part of such an excellent community team.”

Changes to victim support services

As part of the changes to victim support services which took place at the beginning of April, a new booklet entitled ‘Victims of crime - information and advice’ has been produced and will be provided to individuals who report a crime. Individuals who report a crime to the police will now be asked a few additional questions regarding whether they feel they need extra support to cope with, and recover from, that crime. If extra support is needed, their details will be passed to the new Victim Care Unit based in Exeter, which will then co-ordinate the support services available from about 60 different agencies across Devon and Cornwall. This will ensure that those people who need extra support are directed towards the organisation which best meets their needs.

A new victim care website is available at www.victimcaredevonandcornwall.org.uk. Victims of crime now also have the right to request a review of a police decision not to prosecute a suspect under certain circumstances. Details are outlined in the victims of crime leaflet.

Members of the RAOB Sir George Cook Lodge in Torpoint were among a group of Buffaloes who visited Woodlands School in Plymouth to hand over a cheque for £2000. The school has over 80 pupils with various learning and mobility challenges, from the Plymouth and East Cornwall area. The headteacher Andrea Hemmens gave the visitors a guided tour and all were impressed with the school and its work. The donation of £2000 will go towards outdoor play equipment. Members also made sure that each of the children received an Easter Egg to take home that day. They were also invited to a special assembly and saw some of the children receive their certificates of merit for various achievements. The Sir George Cook Lodge is one of three in East Cornwall and meets every Wednesday at the Torpoint Unionist and Conservative Club. Essa Lodge meets at the Working Men’s Club in Saltash every Thursday, while Liskerrett Dupath Lodge meets at the Conservative Club in Liskeard on the first and third Mondays of the month. Each lodge supports various charities throughout the year and these tend to be local causes. Over

the years the charity work has been very discreet to avoid any embarrassment for the recipients. The lodges in East Cornwall are part of the East Cornwall Provincial Grand Lodge and collectively the Provinces all belong to the Grand Lodge of England. Each year the Provinical Grand Primo selects a charity during his year of office. During 2014 Brother Steven Leggett Provincial Grand Primo was supported by members in East Cornwall raising over £2,800.A cheque for £700 will be

presented to CHICS the children’s cancer support group in the near future. The Sir George Cook Lodge finds its membership shrinking just like many other worthy organisations. It continues to look to recruit more men who would welcome the opportunity to meet up regularly to unwind, have a good laugh and raise money for worthy local causes.
