Lions help little Olivia This is little Olivia Parkinson from Millbrook, who was born with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, so is unable to walk, sit or stand unaided. Her parents Nicola and James Parkinson were advised that a special mobility rider called a Scooot could help Olivia to be more independent. The Scooot is described as a 3-in-1 mobility rider for ‘little explorers’ which evolves with the child’s needs. With the Scooot costing hundreds of pounds Olivia’s mum and dad approached the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club to see if they could help. Appeals Secretary Steve Morris contacted club members and in no time Olivia had been presented with her brand new Scooot (below).

Sailing club event raises over £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice A two day event at Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club provided fun for all the family – and raised money for a good cause. The organisers are celebrating after a recent event raised over £1,000 for local charity, St Luke’s Hospice. Club members and friends of all ages joined in the fun over the weekend including a bumper raffle, indoor yacht racing, a coffee morning and craft fair, an on-the-water-race between yachts, dinghies and windsurfers and an evening of live music. The club, which is based in Marine Drive Torpoint, has raised funds for St Luke’s at an annual event over the past few years. The organisers – Sue Griffiths and Jenny Roberts – were pleased with this year’s event. Jenny said: “It’s been a

brilliant event and everyone has had a great time. I am thrilled that we have raised so much money for such a good cause. The money is still coming in and so far we have reached £1,060 which is fantastic. “I would really like to thank all the individuals and local businesses who helped and gave their time or goods to help raise funds. I was overwhelmed by the donations which ranged from runner beans to restaurant vouchers and made a smashing display as you can see from the photo! “It’s impossible to thank everyone by name but special mention must go to Allan Glanville for comparing the race night, Shaun ‘Fletch’ Fletcher and Kevin Baker for the live music, Sainsburys for the coffee morning supplies and a lovely food hamper, and Kardkadia

Event organisers Sue Griffiths (left) and Jenny Roberts for vouchers. Thanks again to Flowers, Pete Glidden Butchers, everyone.” Beauty Within, Hearts Café, The Jetty and Kilby’s Restaurant

News from the Mayor’s Parlour At our September meeting I welcomed back the councillors from the summer recess, expecting that everyone is refreshed and raring to go as we endeavour to deliver some of the exciting and new challenges that face the council. Since the last report it has been very quiet, the Mayoress Tina and I have attended the 100th Birthday of Hilda Merlane at Torcare Antony, a lovely lady who has a very active mind and could read better than me with no glasses at all! On Sunday September 18 Tina and I attended the Battle of Britain Commemoration Service at The Minster Church of St Andrew in Plymouth. We welcomed the new Commanding Officer at HMS Raleigh Captain Ellie Ablett and the new Commander Tony Williams, and hosted a small reception to greet them on Tuesday September 20 in the Council Chambers. Sunday October 2 sees the HMS Raleigh Freedom of Torpoint Parade, which commences at 10.45am from the top of Antony Road heading to the Ferry Lanes for an inspection. This is a truly exciting event and members of the public are welcome to see this spectacular event. The Christmas Lights switch on event is scheduled for Saturday November 26, stalls will be open from 4pm.

Two Torpoint brothers will be on TV screens early next year after appearing in BBC’s popular Bargain Hunt programme. Kelvin and Trevor Spicer teamed up with antiques expert Caroline Hawley to attend Wadebridge Antiques Fair in August to buy their three items for the programme. These were then sold at auction at Eldred’s Auction House in Plymouth in September. Kelvin said: “We both had a fantastic time and enjoyed seeing the process of how the programme is made. The episode is due to be aired sometime in January or February next year, so we will have to keep the results under wraps until then.”

professional network for women in the Naval Service in 2013. Captain Ablett was awarded the MBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List. She is married to Simon, a former Royal Navy Weapons Engineering Officer, who now runs his own outdoor sports coaching and guiding business. Capt Bellfield has left HMS Raleigh after two years in Command, for a period of study at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. He said: “My time in command of Raleigh has been richly rewarding, witnessing the passion of the staff, and the determination to succeed of the recruits and trainees across all the schools. We have passed high quality Officers and Ratings into the Fleet – the Royal Navy will be in good hands for the future.” In 2017 the Naval Service will celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS). It will also recognise the supporting role given by the WRNS to the Naval Service and acknowledge the transition made by women from the separate WRNS into the Royal Navy, demonstrating the way that the WRNS helped define the opportunities for women in today’s Service.

A guard of honour made up of trainee sailors has welcomed a new Commanding Officer to HMS Raleigh. Captain (Capt) Ellie Ablett has relieved Capt Rob Bellfield to become the first woman in Command of the Royal Navy’s largest training base in the South West. Capt Ablett joined the Royal Navy in 1993, in the first wave of women to join a fully integrated service on the closure of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. She comes to HMS Raleigh direct from an appointment in Whitehall as the Executive Assistant to the First Sea Lord. Capt Ablett said: “I am humbled and delighted to have been selected to take Command of HMS Raleigh. Leading the team who are responsible for shaping the key ingredient for our Service’s future success – its people – is a real privilege. And to do that as the Royal Navy begins to grow for the first time in fifty years is particularly exciting.” The daughter of an RAF Officer, Capt Ablett read History at Somerville College, Oxford, prior to joining the Royal Navy as a logistics officer. During her career she has served on six Royal Navy warships. Her last appointment at sea was as Commander Logistics on board HMS Bulwark, which included a deployment East of Suez and high profile events to mark the 350th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Marines and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Capt Ablett has also served ashore in a variety of roles from providing executive support to Flag and Commanding Officers to policy roles in Navy Command and the Ministry of Defence. Other highlights of Capt Ablett’s career include an operational tour of Iraq in support of a three-star General and UK personnel serving in Baghdad. She was also responsible for international partnerships and planning for the UK contribution to operations in Afghanistan, working at the Permanent Joint Headquarters, Northwood. In 2008 Capt Ablett was selected for the Advanced Command and Staff Course, achieving a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King’s College London and was awarded a Cormorant Fellowship for academic excellence. With a keen interest in promoting effective talent management and an inclusive culture across the organisation, she established a

Appeal for beach clean volunteers Surfers Against Sewage, in association with The Crown Estate and the Greggs Foundation, launch the sixth annual Autumn Beach Clean Series. Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are calling for 200 people, community groups, schools and local businesses across the UK to run their own beach cleans during the week of the October 24 to 30. Together these inspiring beach clean series provide the coastal community with the opportunity to protect their favourite beaches and to join a growing national movement calling for dramatic action to halt the marine litter crisis. Set to be the biggest Autumn Beach Clean Series ever, SAS expect over 4500 volunteers to join their local Lead Volunteer to sweep over 15 tonnes of marine litter from 200 beaches across the UK coastline. Over 100 of last year’s Lead Volunteers have already registered their Autumn Beach Cleans, so those taking up the challenge will be joining a highly experienced volunteer army. To register your beach clean, or if you’d just like a little more information on what it takes to be a Lead Volunteer e-mail SAS :beachcleans@sas.org.uk or call 01872 553001. Marine litter is perhaps the most significant threat to oceans today. It is an environmental problem on a global scale and adversely impacts wildlife, the

economy and human health. Every stretch of coastline in every ocean is affected by marine litter, it is present through all layers of water, floating at the surface, suspended in the water and of course, washed up on beaches. There may be around 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic pieces floating in the open ocean weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. Recent studies show that there are well over 3,000 items of litter on every kilometre of UK beaches. Marine Litter is a man-made problem yet has detrimental impact on the environment and the wildlife that encounters it. At least 267 different marine species have suffered as a consequence of contact with marine litter. There is no doubt that more must be done by each and every one of us and SAS intend to lead from the front. Dom Ferris, SAS projects manager said: “Five incredible years of the Autumn Beach Clean Series has enabled almost 8,500 amazing volunteers to remove over 25 tonnes of marine litter from 333 of our precious beaches, often braving extremely challenging weather. “Our incredible Lead Volunteers are the driving force behind this and we can’t wait to welcome even more of them to the SAS family in 2016!”

The Pirates of Cawsand are giving pirates a good name! A few years ago, the Royal Yachting Association launched ‘Sailability’, an event to raise funds to help disabled, young and older, into sailing. Cawsand Bay Sailing Club took up the challenge with an annual Pirate Race, and this year was the fourth such event. It is a condition of entry that sailors and boat are suitably ‘dressed’, with prizes for each. An extra race fee, and especially the sale of refreshments on the beach by the Slater family all went towards the Sailability fund with £200 being donated from this year’s event, bringing the total raised over the years to nearly £1000. The Best Dressed Pirate was won by Penny Knowles and Best Junior by Millie Poet. Best Dressed boat was won by the club’s Commodore, Mark Lentell. The Pirate Race has always been a pursuit race. A RYA Handicap is applied to each make of boat, and taking the length of the race course, arithmetical differences calculated to the nearest second for each boat, so that the slowest boat starts first and the fastest boat last. A touch of comedy is added to the race start, with a Le Mans-type run down the beach to their boat steadied in the water by a crew or friend.

No one argued with the club’s Race Officers for the day – Robin and Sally Davis are pictured in their scary costumes. Of 14 boats racing the winner was Brian Jones in an RS Feva; second was Norman Bowes with his grandson Arthur Templeton-Ward in a Mirror and third were Ian Turpitt and Fleur Young in an RS 200.

Remembering the summer highlights at Porte Rouge Summer is finally over and here at Porte Rouge we have been remembering the highlights... We have said goodbye to Joe Parkin an Oakwood Court College student who left us this summer after 18 months. Thank you Joe for all your hard work and for the lovely letter which you read out at your leaving party. Not to be forgotten was the Porte Rouge Summer Fayre which raised over £135 for the Residents Amenities Fund. As you can see it was well attended by our families, visitors and friends as well as our residents. This year we included face painting (for adults and children) and an afternoon karaoke session which everyone joined in with. All in all it has been a lovely summer full of activity and fun. Thank you to all of you who have helped make it so successful.

Centenarian Hilda enjoys her big day

Celebrations were the order of the day at the Old Vicarage Care Home in Antony when resident Hilda Merlane reached her landmark 100th birthday. It was an extremely busy day for Hilda with lots of gifts, flowers and visitors, including the Mayor of Torpoint John Crago and his wife Tina. They presented Hilda with a bouquet after which John made a speech and proposed the toast for Hilda. Hilda received a celebratory card from the Queen and as she opened and read the message - without glasses - she recalled that she was born during a time of severe food shortages and that she had been alive during two world wars. Hilda Merlane was born a in North London and moved to St John when she retired in 1976. She continued to live independently at home until earlier this year when she moved into the Old Vicarage.

Smiles all round as Torpoint Community College students celebrate their GCSE results

Students celebrate their GCSE successes

Inspired students at Torpoint Community College have achieved outstanding results with a significant improvement in the number of students attaining GCSE grades including English and Mathematics. Students at Torpoint have made above their expected progress where nearly 10% of students achieved an A* in their GCSEs. This significant improvement across the college is a reflection of both each and every inspired individual learner and the hard working members of staff. The college is looking forward to welcoming a significant number of these students into the hugely successful Sixth Form at the college which again this year also celebrated excellent results and sees every student move successfully to their next steps. At this early stage of examination analysis, with several results yet to come in and the array of changes to courses, examinations and GCSEs, nearly 60% of students gained a minimum of five or more GCSEs grades A* - C including English and Mathematics. Some particular stars in terms of attainment this year included Tom Lancaster with two A*, six As, one B and one C; Ethan Hunt with two A*, three As, two Bs and one C; Matthew Clarke with two A*, four As and three Bs; Olivia Leeman with two A*, four As and three Bs; Sam Wainwright with two A*, two As, 4 Bs and two Cs; Mel Hart with 2 A* and seven Bs and Bryonny Pearton with one A*, three As, five Bs and one C. There are many other students who have made significant progress and the college congratulates all students for their outstanding achievement. The achievement of all individuals will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony in December when students collect their examination certificates. The college is immensely proud to be a fully inclusive college and students on vocational programmes also did exceptionally well achieving distinctions and merits from their BTEC and ASDAN courses. It was clear that the class of 2016 was a very special group and whilst students celebrated their achievements, individual subject areas celebrated student successes with above average pass rates in over 10 different curriculum areas. Jeremy Plumb, deputy headteacher at the college said: “All the staff and governors at the college are extremely proud of our students’ achievements and are looking forward to supporting them over the next few years. Well done!”

The Gwen-Aod choir from France

French visitors in memorable concert The Torpoint Lady Singers welcomed Gwen-Aod, a French nautical mixed choir from Benodet to perform a joint concert with them at St James Church, Torpoint, in September. The choir dressed in their Breton nautical costumes, were 23 in number. With their musicians playing accordion, guitars, and whistle they performed a rousing programme of sea shanties written in many cases by Breton songwriters and brought a truly Gallic atmosphere to the church. Torpoint Lady Singers continued the theme with songs from their repertoire featuring rivers and sea. A memorable concert followed by a magnificent buffet and another sing-song. Chris Trethewey, Torpoint Lady Singers thanked

Gwen-Aod for the joy and energy they brought to the afternoon and presented their President Joel Barbotein with a pennant and a picture of the Torpoint Ferry to take back across the channel with them. She thanked the Vicar Rev Canon Lynn Parker for the use of the church and presented Chris Rankin from the Seafarers Link charity with a cheque for £472 raised through the event. The day ended on a surprise invitation from GwenAod to cross the Channel to Benodet next year to perform with them. 2017 will be an extra special one now for the Torpoint Lady Singers as it is their 30th anniversary. Delighted to help Ol It’s time for the October Lions Corner piece already! September was a relatively quiet month for us, just our monthly business meeting to discuss future fundraising events and appeals. One appeal that touched us all was a contact from a mother of a lovely little girl Olivia Parkinson. Nicola and James Parkinson from Millbrook contacted us and informed us that their daughter Olivia was born with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy so is unable to walk, sit or stand unaided. Her parents noticed something was amiss when she was about eight months old because Olivia was rolling to one side and could not sit up. Her condition was diagnosed after a referral to a paediatrician. Olivia needs constant physical support and her physiotherapist recommended to the family that a mobility rider (Scooot) could help little Olivia be more independent. After a trial the Scooot proved very successful and enabled her to get around easier, but as always there was a cost involved. Olivia’s mum Nicola then contacted our Lions club and Lion Steve Morris, Appeal Secretary, through a series of e-mails knowing we could help. After putting this appeal to all members and agreed by everyone, the Scooot was purchased for Olivia by the club. Steve, Lion President Andy Brownhill and Andy Campfield visited the family to present the Scooot. Walking in and seeing this happy little girl we knew instantly how much this piece of equipment would help her. It would mean she would also not rely so much on her big sister Amy to get the things she needed to play with. Nicola said they could not thank the Lions Club enough. Olivia is a happy, clever little girl and this has allowed her to gain a huge amount of confidence as well as independence. It was a real pleasure to help this family and Olivia to gain a more mobile situation. This is why we raise money and it is your donations that can make a big difference to someone needing that

The bric a brace table had a varied selection of items for sale at such reasonable prices, while the raffle had a really nice selection of prizes so it was worth purchasing a few tickets. All in all a very pleasant morning, well done Julie and all helpers making it happen and raising some money, once again thank you for your support. Future events now being organised are our annual New Year’s Day dip along with preparations for a certain fellow wearing a Red Suit and white beard who will be visiting us in a sleigh! Details of these events will be available on our main Lions website. Sponsor forms will be available to download from there. The New Year’s Day dip always seem to attract so many entries as it blows away the cobwebs from the night before and is fun for all, also a great spectator event. Individual and clubs are all welcome to take part, fancy dress judging always take place just before the dip and a parade through the two villages. There will a separate evening for presentations of cups and trophies at some stage. Get your thinking caps on for your outfits. We look forward to seeing you there. We still have wheelchairs for loan, so if you need a wheelchair loan please contact Lion Norman Nethercott on 01752 812567. Norman does a great job keeping all the wheelchairs fully serviced, all we ask for is a donation on completion of the hire. Also if you are in need of any help from us please contact Lion Steve Morris on 01752 816427 it is what we fundraise for. Thank you once again for your support.

Bible Sunday

Bible Sunday was started by the Bible Society as an annual date in the church calendar when we celebrate the Bible’s message. This year Bible Sunday will be officially celebrated on Sunday October 23, but in fact churches can celebrate bible Sunday on any Sunday. What is important though is that we know the importance and relevance of what is written in the bible, because we live in a world where too many people don’t engage with the Bible. In some parts of the world bibles are difficult to access or are simply unavailable. In this country, the Bible is readily available but has lost its significance and its value is unrecognised by millions. For over 200 years the Bible Society has worked hard here at home and in key areas across the world to change this. They take the Bible and find ways to translate and distribute it, create digital formats, and help people relate to and make sense of it in their everyday lives. They do everything they can to help individuals and communities to engage with the Bible because they believe that when they do, lives can change – for good. The Bible can sometimes seem

overwhelming, boring or difficult, but here are a few basic tips that might help you understand it more. 1. Understand the historical context in which the Bible is written, even the newest bits are about 2,000 years old. 2. Don’t read passages entirely on their own, look at what comes before and after them, and you’ll get a much better sense of what’s going on and what it all has to say to you. 3. Read what’s actually there, not what you think might be there, this is particularly true for famous verses; we can think we know what it says and not actually read it. 4. Read the Bible with other people, and you’ll gain other people’s perspective on what they think the Bible says. 5. Don’t read the Bible from start to finish like a novel, because it isn’t one. Start with the bits that you can get on with. 6. Use an easy-to-read modern English translation. 7. And finally, don’t give up. The more you read it, the more you’ll get to grips with it. If you keep going you’ll learn to love it and understand it better, and soon you won’t be able to remember how you got by without it.

Magnificent seven!

Seven students from last year’s Key Stage 3 Ethics groups at Torpoint Community College have recently been presented with their prizes for coming runners up in the 2016 Bible Project. The competition involved writing as if they were imagining being present at an event in the life of Christ. There were entries from schools across the UK so it was a great achievement. Well done everyone!

Defence Minister meets Navy’s new recruits The Minister for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel has been given a firsthand insight into naval training meeting recruits at HMS Raleigh. Mark Lancaster MP paid an overnight visit to the Royal Navy training base as part of a wider visit to Royal Navy and Royal Marine establishments in the South West. He met with a group of junior officers and also sat down with a class of trainees in the sixth week of their 10 week initial naval training course. The Minister explained his role and also spoke of his background as a former soldier and current member of the Territorial Army, in which he serves in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He asked the trainees about their training and their reasons for joining the Service. Mr Lancaster also took questions from the recruits. Among the class was the Minister’s namesake, Recruit Thomas Lancaster, who is training to be an engineer technician. The class leader for his group, Recruit Lancaster, who is not related to the Minister, said: “I think a lot of people had a great experience just being able to chat to the Minister and ask him whatever they liked. To think he took time out from his schedule to come and meet us was really good.” The Minister also met members of Crean Division, HMS Raleigh’s rehabilitation division, which provides care and a package of training to help recruits who have suffered an injury or illness return to full fitness. Mr Lancaster asked the recruits about their daily routine and how

they maintained their focus and morale. Recruit Magen Spence said: “It was nice to know that he is in the military and understands what we’ve been going through having broken bones himself.” Mark Lancaster was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence Personnel and Veterans in May 2015. He is the MP for Milton Keynes North. The Minister is responsible for personnel, reserves, veterans and service families in a range of areas from civilian and service personnel and policy to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and defence estate. During his time at Raleigh he also met with the local DIO representatives and contractor staff responsible for maintenance of the site. The Minister arrived at HMS Raleigh by boat from the Naval Base after earlier spending time with the Royal Marines at the Commando Training Centre,

The Duke of Gloucester inspects the guard of honour

Royal visitors at Raleigh The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have rounded off a day of engagements in Cornwall with a visit to HMS Raleigh. During their time at the Royal Navy’s largest training base in the South West, the Duke of Gloucester was invited to inspect a guard of honour. The Royal couple also met with trainee sailors from Crean Division. Named after Warrant Officer Tom Crean, an Antarctic explorer, who accompanied both Scott and Shackleton on their expeditions, the division provides care to recruits who have suffered injury or illness in training while they return to full fitness. Recruit Adam George spoke with the Duke of Gloucester. Adam said: “I’ve joined as an aircrewman. The Duke asked me about my injury, my training and wished us all well. This was the first time I’d met any members of The

Service to commemorate brave young soldier who was killed 100 years ago

A commemorative service in memory of a brave young soldier from Torpoint who was killed in action 100 years ago is being held at the end of October. Second Lieutenant Robert Bagster Wilson Vinter was just 20 years old when he was killed near Les Boeufs on October 31 1916. He entered military service in February 1915 at the tender age of 19 and served in France with the 6th Worcestershire Regiment. He was awarded the Military Cross in July 1916 ‘for conspicuous gallantry during an attack on an enemy crater. He led his men to within 20 yards of the crater. Here the attack was held up by intense fire. But with half a dozen men he made good further ground and continued to bomb effectively.” The commemorative service is being organised by the Torpoint Archives and will take place at St James Church at 3pm on Sunday October 30. Members of the Torpoint Royal British Legion, the Torpoint Archives and the local community will take part in the service, which also marks the Centenary Year of the Battle of the Somme.

Enjoyable visit to Trematon Castle MAKER WITH RAME W.I.

As our President, Carole Amphlett was unwell the meeting was taken by Ann Helliwell, our Vice President. Matters discussed were the Federation Christmas Lunch at Lanhydrock Hotel in December and next year’s Cornwall visit to Denman College in May. Birthday posies were given to Ann and Di. Last month was our garden meeting and we elected to visit Trematon Castle. It was a beautiful afternoon and the gardens within the curtain wall were enchanting. Winding paths led to the orchard, swimming-pool, the ancient gatehouse and up to the Norman keep. It was here that Drake’s treasure was stored for safe keeping being taken to Queen Elizabeth 1 in London. Now it houses chickens. The views from the house and keep were just glorious. We could gaze across to Saltash, far up the Tamar and across to Devonport. The view from the stables was pretty good, too - chairs, tables, tea and cake! We sat in the sun, ate and chatted and generally had a very happy afternoon.
