Roadshow will be at town carnival this month
Torpoint Plan hits the road in September
Members of the Torpoint Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group are getting ready to meet the community face-to-face in a series of roadshow events, to enable people to continue to have their say on the future development of Torpoint. Since the launch of the Torpoint Neighbourhood Development Plan in March, work has been gathering pace, and members and volunteers of the Torpoint Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering group are preparing to deliver a number of consultation events throughout the town, including a stand at the Torpoint Carnival on Saturday September 12. To date the Steering Group have distributed over 3,500 surveys to local residents, collated over 1,200 responses, analysed the findings, established a website, received a video from Torpoint Nursery and Infants School, appointed official town planners, and begun the work to create the vision for Torpoint. At the end of July a small team, including members of the Town Council and Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group, met with the appointed town planners Clifton Emery Design Ltd. and toured the town on minibus and via foot. This was a useful insight for the planners, who are now working with the Council and Neighbourhood Plan towards designing ‘A Vision for Torpoint’. But the next vital step is to test out some of the ideas collected in the survey with members of the
local community, to get a stronger sense of opinion and direction. A logo for the plan has been created by Jonathan Cowd of Torpoint, with the design roughly depicting the topics being considered as part of the Neighbourhood Plan such as, traffic, environment, leisure, recreation, open spaces, waterfront, nature, housing, education, industry and commerce, and includes a couple of Torpoint’s recognisable landmarks incorporated within the logo. Councillor Mrs. Andrea Johnson, Chair of the Torpoint Neighbourhood Development Plan Steering Group said: “We are keen to ensure that our whole community, young and old, all feel that they have had an opportunity to contribute to Torpoint’s Neighbourhood Development Plan, that’s why we are arranging a number of consultation events to keep the dialogue flowing.” She added: “Our event at the carnival will give people the opportunity to look at our progress to date, and add their comments. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible.” A website for the plan is available at www.torpointplan.org.uk All minutes and documents from meetings are available for public viewing on this website, and also through our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/torpointneighbourhoodplan For more information, or to get involved with the project please contact: admin@torpointtowncouncil. org.uk

All the fun of the Summmer Fair The Lions Summer Fair took place on a beautiful afternoon in July, and we were fortunate to have Sheryll Murray MP, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint present to open the proceedings. The afternoon began with a parade of entertainers led by the ATC Corps of drums, and was followed by a full afternoon of entertainment ranging from stilt walkers to medieval knights and field gun teams to dancers and bands. There was also static entertainment in the form of climbing walls, shooting ranges and for our more junior guests Punch and Judy, donkey rides and roundabouts. Mums and dads could browse the many charity, trade and crafts stalls, or seek refreshment in the tea tent or our fully licensed bar. The afternoon was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who came and supported us, and hope to see you all again next year! At the monthly business meeting Frank O’Neil winner of the £100 from the summer fair’s grand prize draw was presented with his cheque by Lion President SteveMorris. He thanked the club and walked away a happy man! Lion vice president Andy Brownhill was also a very lucky winner correctly guessing the weight of the beautiful cake which was made and decorated complete with the Lions logo by Paul Savage, senior craft manager at HMS Raleigh Cookery School. Joe Heppolette with two of his four daughters, Amanda Bell (left) and Sarah Cook. Joe, Amanda and Sarah all work at HMS Raleigh for Interserve
Torpoint man all set to achieve life-long dream A 63-year-old man from Torpoint is set to achieve a life-long ambition in September when he takes part in a ‘Wing Walk’ for charity. Joe Heppolette will step out onto the wing of 1940s Boeing Stearman Biplan at the Chiltern Air Park on Saturday September 5. With the aircraft being flown by a highly qualified pilot Joe will complete a variety of flypasts and manoeuvres. The highlight will be a 500 feet dive and a zoom climb with a final ‘run and break’ before landing. Joe said: “I’ve always wanted to do a wing walk. I remember seeing pictures of the wing walk display teams from the 1920 and 30s, which inspired me and I’ve been trying to find a way to do it ever since. I’d almost given up hope and then came across the Wing Walk Display website about a month ago and booked it straight away.” Joe currently works at HMS Raleigh where he is employed by Interserve. He previously served in the Royal Navy, initially as a steward and then as a Royal Navy careers advisor. He said: “Every ship I’ve been on I always volunteered as the helicopter winch dummy; being
lifted from the ship or sea to the helicopter, to allow the aircrew to practise their skills. I think that fired my imagination further and led me to the wing walk. I’m not nervous. It’s all about having faith and confidence in the skills of the pilot. If you didn’t have faith you wouldn’t do anything.” Joe will be supported on the day by his four daughters, two of whom also work for Interserve, two son-in-laws and four grand-children, and will be using his once-in-a-lifetime experience to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. He said: “I booked the wing walk and then told the family. I think they were a little shocked to say the least, but they knew I’ve always wanted to do it. I try to do what I can for charity and tend to chose a different one every couple of years, although it normally is a children’s charity. This time it’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. I’ve not really got a connection with the hospital, but I know they do a fantastic job in helping sick children and their families.” Anyone wishing to sponsor Joe can do so online at: www.justgiving.com/JoesWingWalk

Visitors flocked to Mount Edgcumbe park in August for the annual classic and vintage car rally. Thousands of people from all over Cornwall and other parts of the country arrived by cars, ferry and coaches. Cars, motor bikes, scooters, camper vans and various military vehicles were on display with proud owners waiting eagerly to show off their entries and explain how the restoration took part. With the weather perfect all the stalls, bar,ice cream and food vendors were kept busy all day long with queues for all. Bouncy castles were also busy with so many children around. The charity stalls had a massive boost and seemed busy all day long which enabled them to raise all important funds. All in all a great day for locals and visitors alike. Photos Andy Campfield

Latest from the Mayor’s Parlour Barclays confirm closure of Torpoint branch in November
Normally in August councils have a recess, but this year we have had to have a lot of meetings on various issues. Also I have written to all the bus companies and banks to see what the situations are for Torpoint. I have written to the managing directors of the bus firms of Stagecoach, First and Plymouth Citybus. Stagecoach informed me that they have made an assessment of the operation and the Torpoint service which has been running at a heavy loss. That is the reason they are not planning to come to Torpoint and replace First’s 81 and 81D services. All the staff at Torpoint First have been offered alternative work with Stagecoach at their main depot in Plymouth. First Bus confirmed that Stagecoach would be taking over the operation in Plymouth on September 6 and the First staff would be transferred over to them and they stated that they are pleased that their employment has been preserved by Stagecoach. Plymouth Citybus stated that it is their intention to ensure that Torpoint has a reliable, safe and value for money bus service that meets the needs of the residents. They will be looking to see what impact this has on their services. They have agreed with Cornwall Council that they will operate a commercial (without subsidy) Sunday service from the September 20. Nothing is off the table for consideration (a town shuttle for example), however any changes they instigate will be designed to ensure financial sustainability of the service, following an analysis of passenger movements, which will be used to identify any new timetables and on balance must improve service levels for the over whelming customers using it. I have written to the head office of Barclays Bank and they confirmed that the closure date of the Torpoint Branch would be Friday November 27 and that their records show a low and falling level of transactions at the branch and on average 40 per cent of the customers are already using other branches. This figure is even bigger for their business customers. This closure means their nearest branch will be at Plymouth Armada Way, open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-4pm. They say that everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters (including paying in a cheque or depositing cash), may also be completed at the Post Office located at 72 Fore Street, approximately 150 metres away. After writing to the chief executive at Lloyds Bank I have been informed that they have contacted the regional operations manager for the Torpoint Branch, who has confirmed that they currently have no plans to close the Torpoint branch. In March they did reduce the opening hours by 2 and half hours per week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9am-4pm. Wednesday 9.30am-4pm. They said: “As you can appreciate, we continually review the size of the branch network as customer footfall and business demands change. Branch closure decisions will be based on customer usage or locations where we have duplicated branches. “In addition we will consider where leases are due to expire or where the nature of the high street has changed so much that our branches are in the wrong place for current shopping patterns.” I think with the buses and the banks it’s a question of ‘use them or lose them!’
Fly Tipping
Fly tipping still persists around the town and also on Antony Estate. We must be thankfulthat we have Antony Estate to go for walks but we must remember to look after it. Use the footpaths which are open to the public only, and also refrain from fly tipping even in the cemetery car park there has been flying tipping. Antony Estate is kindly providing formal permissive access over the existing tracks within Bowling Green Wood. This is a favourite place for dog walking for many local people. We urge all locals to respect this permission by keeping dogs on leads and taking all dogs mess with them. Following a rise in fly-tipping around the gated entrance to West Down Cottage, the Estate are making some changes to the
Cllr. Mike Pearn MBE
verge. Cars are kindly asked to park in the Council Cemetery Car Park opposite to allow for post deliveries, farm and residential access. If you see someone fly-tipping make a note and report: How many people are involved and what they look like; what has been tipped - how much and what it looks like; details of any vehicles involved including make, colour and registration number if possible. Report the details to Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 141, or email refuseandrecycling@cornwall.gov.uk
Penalty for fly-tipping
Dumping household, industrial and commercial waste illegally is a serious criminal offence that carries a fine of up to £20,000 (unlimited if the case goes to the Crown Court) or an offender can even be sent to prison. It is also an offence to permit fly-tipping. We treat this problem very seriously and will usually prosecute anyone caught flytipping. Fly-tipping is often associated with dumping waste from vehicles; in this case the person who owns the vehicle can also be prosecuted, which means that it is possible for a prosecution to occur when only the vehicle, not the driver, is identifiable. The police also have the powers to seize vehicles used for fly-tipping.

Port Eliot Festival 2015 - a truly magical and memorable event
Situated behind the picturesque local village of St Germans and alongside one of the prettiest stretches of the River Lynher there is no better setting in Cornwall (indeed the UK) for a unique celebration that is The Port Eliot Festival. This magical four-day annual event attracts visitors from all over the country who come together on the historic Port Eliot Estate to enjoy a celebration of music, literature, fashion food and entertainment. This year’s event also featured many new craft and outdoor activities which were hugely popular with the festivalgoers and particularly children/ families. The festival, which took place between Thursday July
By Lorraine England, who worked as a volunteer steward at the event
30 and Sunday August 2 was blessed with exceptionally good weather which allowed all those attending to enjoy fully the historic house and stunning gardens. Walking around the festival
which has been described as ‘a huge garden party with all the best that the fringe of festivals like Glastonbury can offer’ one could not help but be transfixed by the magical ‘fairy-tale’ atmosphere created by Micheal
Howells and his talented production team. Around every corner there was something to stimulate and delight the senses be it; great food/drink, entertainment, art, craft, or activities. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and informal with celebrities enjoying all the event has to offer alongside festival goers. If you have never experienced the magic that is the Port Eliot Festival you can share some of this year’s highlights on the festival website at www.porteliotfestival.com Heartfelt thanks to the Earl & Lady ‘Cathy’ St German’s for hosting such a wonderful festival in Cornwall’s ‘Hidden Corner’.
Talented young musicians perform with the Royal Marines Band Talented youngsters from the South West took to the stage in July with the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth. A group of 30 young musicians performed a concert with the Royal Marines Band at Benodet Park in Torpoint. The concert was the culmination of a Summer School for young talent organised by the Band at HMS Raleigh. Over the course of four days the young people, who were aged between 13 and 17 had been introduced to the Royal Marines’ full range of ensembles, from the iconic marching band to a full orchestra and smaller groups. Among those taking part was Jonathan Brown from Stoke, in Plymouth. The 17-year-old hails from a musical family and plays the oboe. He is a member of the Plymouth Youth Concert Band and found out about the Summer School from his conductor, Barry Mills, a former Director of Music in the Royal Marines Band Service. Jonathan said: “The oboe is quite hard to play and can be frustrating; you’re not usually heard that much in a full band, but it’s so much fun. I’m really grateful to my parents for my musical background. I’m a huge fan of classical music, so perhaps not your typical 17-year-old. I thought the Summer School would be fun to do. I’m really shy when I play my oboe, so I was kind of apprehensive when I arrived here. “It has been absolutely brilliant though so far, some of the music I haven’t been able to play that well, I haven’t been able to get my fingers around it, but Jase, the Royal Marines oboe player next to me, has been really helpful. “The music has been fantastic and the Royal Marines Band is so good. The other people attending are so lovely too. With any concert I get nervous, but I know once I start playing and get into it it’ll be ok. I’m really excited about taking part. My parents are coming, my grand-parents are coming and some friends of ours are coming too, so not much pressure.” Bethany Lee, from Helston in Cornwall, was one of the young musicians who is hoping to make a career in the Royal Marines Band Service. She said: “I’m been playing trombone for three years and I’m in a brass band and a youth orchestra. I’ve been to Raleigh once before to play with these guys. “This is a great experience and gives me a real insight. It’s really appealing to have a career playing music. We’ve done all sorts this week. Marching with an instrument is quite hard, you have to keep your instrument really straight, but I’m getting used to it.” The Summer School was organised by Band Sergeant Jason Finch and was open to all standards of musician. The only proviso was that those taking part must be able to read music. For the concert the combined Band was under the direction of Major Jason Burcham, the Director of Music of the Royal Marines Band Plymouth. He said: “We deliberately kept this as open as we could. There were no auditions. Those who wanted to take part just had to fill in an application form. We aimed for 30 and that’s exactly what we got. The standard of musician is actually very good. This is all about providing an opportunity for talented youngsters to get a taste of what it’s like to play in a professional band. We’re sure that every one of them will get something out of this and if some of them see this as a career option for the future, then that’s great for us.”

Tough conditions for competitors at the Cawsand Bay Regatta Over 20 boats gathered for the 2015 two-day Cawsand Bay Regatta. Saturday was beautiful with a typically gusty Force 4/5 making the sailing eventful around a triangular course for the three, one-hour races, while the catamarans sailed a longer course extended eastwards to the Queens Grounds buoy. The forecast for 30 knot gusts on the Sunday proved correct, and Race Officer Ian Turpitt wisely decided on just a single Sunday race, delaying the start for conditions to lessen. After the Sunday race, the annual prizes were presented by the Commodore Mark Lentell, with the accomplishment of also presenting himself with one of the prizes.

Praise for Cornish students Cornwall Council has congratulated young people in the county who have worked so hard at their GCSE courses and on August 20 received the results that have done their talents and abilities justice. Andrew Wallis, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said the achievements were a tribute to the hard work and commitment of both students and schools in Cornwall and praised the support provided by parents and carers. “I would like to congratulate everyone on their achievements” he said. “All our schools are committed to providing the best quality education for their students and today’s results show that, once again, hard work has paid
dividends. This is a very important time for these young people who will be making key decisions which will affect their future lives.” Also welcoming the success of Cornish students, Jane Black, the Council’s Head of Service for Learning and Achievement, said that the exams were an important stepping stone for young people in Cornwall. “I’m really pleased to see so many young people do so well in their GCSEs. “We are still waiting for detailed results from a number of our secondary schools but anticipate that the picture here will reflect the national picture. We will be analysing the data from all our schools over the next few days when we will have a clearer idea of how they have performed”.

It has been another very busy month for the residents and ourselves at Porte Rouge. We held our annual Summer Fayre in July to celebrate the completion of our ‘Country Garden’ and we were all privileged to have a visit from the Town Mayor Mike Pearn, accompanied by his wife Val the Mayoress. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments laid on which included a cream tea and a variety of home-made cakes which had been prepared by the residents. We also had a raffle which raised £116 for the residents’ amenities fund. Some of the residents enjoyed the end of term party at Oakwood College who laid on a delicious spread and made us all feel very welcome. Torcare is also involved in the newly organised Dementia Alliance Committee for Torpoint which will support residents and their families who enjoy accessing the local community.

News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team with Sergeant Angela Crow, Neighbourhood Team Leader
PCSO Stacey Strevens started with us at the end of July as the town’s community support officer. She will be mentored for her first few weeks by PCSO Kirsty Down. Stacey grew up in Torpoint and attended Torpoint Community College before studying for her BSc Police Sciences at the University of South Wales. During year 10 at school, Stacey chose to do her work experience placement at Liskeard Police Station. After this, Stacey was inspired to make her chosen career with Devon and Cornwall Police. Stacey has previously worked within the local community as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities and also volunteered for Victim Support in her spare time, helping people who had experienced crime, offering practical and emotional support. All of which was good experience for her initial training at Police HQ. Her commitment, professionalism and hard work during training were recognised by the trainers, who awarded her The Endeavour Trophy for her efforts. Well done Stacey on a fantastic start to a new career! Identity crime campaign Devon and Cornwall Police launched an awareness campaign last month encouraging people to protect their personal information. The ‘Not With My Name’ campaign, produced in partnership with the City of London Police, is targeting identity crime in our communities. Identity fraud is an offence that 1 in 4 UK adults are believed to have fallen victim to losing on average £1,200 each. Total losses to the UK adult population are estimated to be £3.3 billion. Identity fraud is rising and often people do not realise they have been a victim until it is too late. This type of crime can affect anyone at any time and we are urging people to be alert. The ‘Say Something’ helpline, targeted at children and young people with concerns about child sexual exploitation (CSE) involving themselves or others, has been launched this week. The helpline is run by the charity Missing People, in association with the National Working Group Network, and is funded by the Department of Education. Callers will be offered advice and, where appropriate, necessary or requested, access to the police to ensure protection and safeguarding. Young people can phone or text 116 000 to obtain immediate help and support around CSE. Devon and Cornwall Police is supporting the new helpline and promoting this message to young people: It is not ok for someone to expect you or your friends to do things you don’t want to do. Listen to your instinct; if it doesn’t feel right - tell someone. The new, free, 24/7 helpline number is: 116 000. Some of the varied calls which police attended included 15 domestic incidents, 20 incidents checking the welfare of individuals, four people were reported missing and 33 incidents occurred on the highway. Calls also included 43 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of these continue to be neighbour disputes, noise,
nuisance individuals and vehicles. A small number were calls relating to reports of the unauthorised encampments at Trevol Business Park and then the football field adjacent to Horson Cemetery. These calls also included the 40 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula over this period. He just wanted to do something good... Six-year old Christopher decided one Saturday morning to make his parents pancakes. He wanted it to be a nice surprise for them. He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor. He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar and an egg, leaving a floury trail on the floor, which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Christopher was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mum and Dad, but it was getting very bad.
Wilcove WI “There is nothing; absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about on boats” (quote from Kenneth Grahame) July, August and September have once again been busy months for the ladies of Wilcove WI. On July 18 three of our members joined the ladies from neighbouring WIs at a garden party held within the stunning gardens of Trematon Castle. During this event Dot Hill (our secretary) had the opportunity to parade the banner which we hand felted in 2014 at one of our evening meetings. Our speaker in July was the very informative Lynn Gould who kept us enthralled with tales of the life and works of Kenneth Grahame author of ‘Wind in the Willows.’ Lynn started her talk by stating she considered Grahame to have been a man who had never escaped his childhood despite having married, sired a son and worked in a prestigious post at the Bank of England. She also explained that largely due to the illustrations of Ernest Shepherd (creator of Winnie the Pooh) there is a popular misconception that ‘Wind in the Willows’ was set on the banks of the River Thames where Grahame spent his childhood years. However, as Lynn went on to explain text within the book clearly reflects Grahame’s adult life and years spent living in the Cornish town of Fowey where he enjoyed the company of great characters such as Atky (Edward Atkinson) a fellow writer and first Commodore of the Royal Fowey Yacht Club. It was particularly interesting to hear that Kenneth Grahame would have

He didn’t know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove, (and he didn’t really know how the cooker worked!). Suddenly he saw his kitten licking the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs and landed on the floor - getting his pyjamas white and sticky. Just then he saw Dad standing at the door. Big tears welled up in Christopher’s eyes. All he wanted to do was something good, but instead he’d made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming,

On Saturday August 8 several of our members attended the annual Crafthole & District Flower Show. This delightful community event draws entries from across the peninsula in competitive categories such as; flowers, plants, produce, baking and crafts and is known not only for the high standard of entries but also the friendly banter which occurs at the ‘after show auction’. Congratulations to Su Hillman (our current president) for her success at this show in the painting and drawing competitive categories. On the weekend of August 15 and 16 four of our members were present at the Wilcove Village Association history weekend where we exhibited items from our archives and talked to visitors about the WI. There is no doubt that Toad, Badger and friends from ‘Wind in the Willows’ would have thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Wilcove WI Garden Party which was held on the afternoon of Tuesday August 18 at Cove Hall. Based on a ‘Ladies in Lavender’ theme our garden party gave us the

opportunity to parade our best summer frocks and hats, to enjoy a high tea and socialise with friends from other WI’s. On the evening of Monday August 24 we undertook our annual visit to Sterts theatre where we enjoyed a pre-theatre dinner and then a musical production entitled ‘Some Enchanted Evening.’ On the evening of Saturday September 12 we will return to the water to join members from other district WIs on an evening boat trip up the River Tamar. Having boarded at Cremyll we will enjoy a leisurely passage up the Tamar towards Cothele and Calstock while sampling ‘makes and bakes’ from each other’s kitchens. Heartfelt thanks to Pat Paxton (President of Seaton and Downderry WI) who arranged this event as part of our local ongoing Centenary Celebrations. 2015 has been a busy and remarkable year for the Women’s Institute however our celebrations are not over with many crafting, cultural, community and celebratory events for the winter months already in the planning stage. Watch this space for more information. Our speaker for October is Pamela Dorrington who will talk about the National Trust. The members of Wilcove WI would like to invite any ladies who are interested in the Women’s Institute (WI) to join us at one of our monthly meetings; listen to our speakers, enjoy some home-made savouries, cakes and refreshments and talk to us about what the WI can offer you. As Kenneth Grahame said in ‘Wind in the Willows’...’come along inside..’ and we’ll see if tea and buns can make the world a better place”. We meet at 7.30 pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Cove Hall (Wilcove Village Hall).
Volunteers wanted for UK-wide beach litter count The UK’s leading marine charity, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), is looking for volunteers to register now for a citizen science project that involves a trip to the beach! The Great British Beach Clean (18th21st September) is the only UK-wide beach clean that not only spruces up hundreds of beaches around the coast but records the litter finds as part of a global beach clean event. Plastic bottles and carrier bags, nappies, balloons, and tiny plastic pieces can be found on almost every beach in the UK – either washed up, blown there or dropped. Our beaches have never been so filthy, and most of the litter found can be traced back to us – the general public! “Beach litter has steadily risen over the two decades we’ve been recording it on UK beaches,” said MCS Beachwatch Officer, Charlotte Coombes. “Last year’s Great British Beach Clean attracted almost 5,500 volunteers to over 300 beaches. It’s a citizen science project that has become the most respected and long standing beach litter survey in the UK.”
In 2014 tiny bits of plastic were the most frequently found litter items on UK beaches. There was a 6.4% rise in beach litter between 2013 and 2014 with wet wipes having the biggest increase at almost 50%! “Taking part in the Great British Beach Clean really can make a difference. In previous years when we’ve highlighted increases in dog poo bags and sewage related debris found on beaches we have seen drops in numbers subsequently. We hope we’ll see fewer wet wipes in 2015 following our mini-campaign showing why these material squares should go in the bin not the loo,” says Charlotte Coombes. MCS says cleaning and surveying a beach only takes a couple of hours at most. Each beach has a coordinator who explains how to fill in a simple data form, and then it’s just a case of grabbing a litter picker and a bin bag and filling it up with rubbish! Volunteers are also asked to record any branded items they find, to enable MCS to approach specific manufacturers and retailers and look at ways they can work with them to reduce the amount of rubbish
from their products reaching our beaches. “Beach litter is a serious environmental problem,” says Charlotte Coombes. “But the solution is in our hands. The first step is to register as a volunteer. We want the ‘Great British Beach Clean’ weekend to offer a snapshot of what the future could look like for the British seaside by reducing the amount of litter that reaches our shores”. MCS beach litter projects are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Clara Govier, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “It’s really important for everyone to learn about the dangers of marine litter and I’m delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery are supporting the Marine Conservation Society who are tackling this important cause. “I would urge anyone who has the time to spare to take part in this beach clean.” The Great British Beach Clean – be part of the biggest and most influential fight against marine litter in the UK.
