Credit where credit’s due... One of the joys of producing the Plymouth Magazine is the opportunity it provides to share positive news about the achievements and successes of people and businesses in the city. This issue is no exception and it is a particular pleasure to feature a team of young entrepreneurs from a Plymouth school who have launched their own business called Made Cakes. The group of talented teenagers combined their love of baking with commendable business skills to set up the company - and they have achieved remarkable success. You can read all about it on page 16. We also feature Olivia Smith, the wife of a Plymouth-based Royal Marine officer, who has created a range of affordable pearl jewellery which is proving popular with women not only in the UK but also abroad. The achievements of two men who have made their mark on the city are also featured. Architect Graham Lobb is the man who has spent more than 40 years creating the designs that have regenerated Plymouth’s most historic areas, while community champion Steve Whiteway looks back on 50 years of service for charities and other organisations. It underlines the breadth of skill and talent which is thriving in Plymouth and we look forward to carrying more stories like these in future editions. We would love to hear from you, our readers, if you know an individual or organisation which is making a difference or achieving success in their chosen field. It’s a great privilege to share good news, so please contact me at info@ cornerstonevision.com if you have a positive story which deserves to appear in print. Look forward to hearing from you - and hope you enjoy the latest edition.

BUSINESS MATTERS

Olivia’s pearl of an idea for business A Plymouth woman has launched a luxury pearl jewellery business. Olivia Smith, whose husband is an officer in the Royal Marines in the city, has set out to create contemporary pearl jewellery at affordable prices. She has called the brand Olivia & Pearl and launched her online business at the end of 2017. As the wife of a Royal Marine, Olivia secured a start-up loan from X-Forces to research, develop and market her brand. With the global pearl market estimated to reach £10.7bn by 2020, Olivia is keen to gain a slice of the market share and follow in the footsteps of Monica Vinader and Pandora. Providing collectable, classic and contemporary pearl jewellery designed for a new generation of pearl lovers, Olivia & Pearl pieces are stylish, high quality, sourced ethically while remaining affordable. Olivia said: “I was an avid lover of pearls as a little girl and often remember my dad returning from business trips with pearls. Having worked as an actor for 10 years and in advertising for a while, all I really wanted was to have control of my destiny and autonomy over my career. “After I married, I also struggled with place and purpose as a military wife – how do you maintain a career and friendships when you move around so much. “When I finally made the leap to start up my own business, I wanted to turn my love for pearls into a brand and was privileged to receive mentoring from X-Forces chief executive Ren Kapur .” Olivia sources the pearls herself, travelling to China and Hong Kong to select the best freshwater and ethically cultured pearls. She designs the jewellery herself which is then crafted either in the UK or Hong Kong. “Pearl jewellery is traditionally very expensive, but we have been able to make it more affordable because

8\

of our minimal overheads,” said Olivia. “We only use triple A grade quality pearls and use them to create beautiful jewellery items.” The first collection by Olivia & Pearl celebrates women’s achievements. It focuses on entwining the contemporary with the classic and designing beautiful pieces created to

celebrate individualism, beauty and power of women. Olivia added: “My friends are my ultimate inspiration; real, cool and sassy. Each piece tells a story and has been designed with the modern woman in mind.” She markets the jewellery through her online business and also has pop-up stalls at high-profile events such as London Fashion Week and the Goodwood Revival. Since receiving the Start-Up Loan in 2017, Olivia has achieved so much and was recently named the winner of the Start Up Loans Company ‘Start Up of the Year Award’. She concluded: “It was a complete surprise and absolute delight to win the Start Up of the Year Award. I am just thrilled. To people wondering if they should start up their own business, I say feel the fear and do it anyway. It is scary, and hard work, and you carry the business with you all the time, but it has been an incredible journey and it is truly amazing to see your ideas and decisions become a reality.” With the first Olivia & Pearl collection now available, Olivia is already designing new pieces to add to the collection, and she will continue to support military spouses, helping them realise that they too can start up their own business and find their place in self-employment.

Simara dances her way to success

Dance teacher Simara Winter pictured with just some of her talented students

Plymouth mother of two Simara Winter has literally danced her way to success for more than 30 years. It all started when Simara was little more than two years old. Her mother took her to a tap dancing class at the local village hall and the dance teacher immediately spotted Simara’s special talent. It was the start of a journey which saw Simara win a host of trophies as a child and teenager and eventually qualified as a teacher of tap, ballet and modern dance well before she was 20 years old. After qualifying Simara worked as a freelance dance teacher with Italia Conti in Plymouth and further afield. One of the students she taught was Grace Adams-Short who went on to become a Big Brother celebrity before starting her own theatre school in Plymouth. Simara worked as a dance teacher with her for a number of years until Grace decided to move to Liverpool. Simara said: “Grace asked me if I would be willing to take over the franchise and I decided to bite the bullet.” Simara approached her bank and managed to secure the funds to acquire the Grace Academy franchise in Plymouth. The decision to run her own dance school proved a massive success - enabling her to pay back the bank loan in just 18 months. With Simara teaching a complete range of dance styles, she continued to enjoy success and it soon became clear that she needed bigger premises. “I desperately needed to expand, but there was a real shortage of suitable premises in Plymouth. I had to use church halls and similar venues, which were not ideal,” said Simara. She started to look for her own premises and after two years of searching found a former car paint spray shop just off Mutley Plain. “It had been a boxing gym in the past as well, “ said Simara, “and it needed a lot of work to bring it up to the standard I wanted.” She approached the bank again, who were more than willing

to help with the funds needed to create the new dance studio. Helped by her husband Patrick, mum Gerry and a number of parents, the work was completed in less than three weeks. It included the installation of specially manufactured flooring costing several thousands of pounds. She opened the new Simara Winter Studios at Seaton Lane in Mutley in May 2015 and will celebrate her third anniversary there next month. Simara runs more than 30 different dance classes six days a week providing tuition for more than 70 students aged from two and a half to 70. “We run several exam sessions each year with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing which enable our students to progress through their grades,” said Simara. “I love to see the progress of my students. My passion is to pass on my knowledge, skills and ideals to them in an unbroken chain of progress. I emphasise the importance of discipline and structure in all that I do.” Simara herself keeps her qualifications up to date, regularly taking examinations as part of her own continuing professional development. Her success is underlined by the host of medals and trophies won by her students in competitions and dance festivals across the South West. She also organises shows at Christmas and charity events, enabling her students to show their skills to the public. This year, for the first time, a group of her students will be performing on stage in the city centre as part of the Lord Mayor’s Show in May. “It’s great to be invited to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show, we’re really looking forward to it,” she said. Simara has no plans to rest on her laurels. She wants to continue to expand the business, employ staff and eventually find even larger premises in the city.

PLYMOUTH MATTERS Graham Lobb is passionate about Plymouth. It’s why he’s spent most of the past 44 years doing all he can to make the city a better place for people to live, work and play in.

Visionary architect Graham Lobb Photo by Matt Austin

Plymouth-born Graham is an architect and one of the key figures behind the regeneration designs of some of the city’s most historic sites, such as The Barbican, Sutton Harbour, Devonport, and the Stonehouse Peninsula including the main approach to the Royal William Yard. His work also includes innovative projects that are designed around the concepts of community and sustainability. Designs such as the Genesis Building for the Millfields Trust in Union Street, the self-build Nelson Project providing 24 homes for service veterans and social housing residents in Stonehouse, and the George House Homeless Shelter, also in in Stonehouse. You’ll spot the Genesis Building – it’s the one with 18,600 plants on the outside, helping to keep the Union Street air clean. Graham is loving his job every bit as much as he did when he launched his company, Form Design, in 1974, initially working with three college friends from Plymouth School of Architecture. It’s fitting that his latest project is Oceansgate, the huge marine enterprise development at South Yard, because Devonport Dockyard is where it all started for Graham, when his firm was invited to help with the design work for the submarines facility on behalf of the MoD. The firm’s growing reputation was such that in the early 1980s, after winning a national housing award, it was asked to do some of the design work at London Docklands: “This was before Canary Wharf, but I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do,” said Graham. “I’m a Plymothian and I wanted to be working here and in the West Country. And I felt I could take the experience I’d had at the Docklands in London and use it in Plymouth.” So Graham, by now the sole owner of the company, set about making a difference in some of the city’s most iconic but neglected areas. Probably the biggest transformation took place around the Barbican in the 1990s, when the regeneration of the Royal William Yard. It the then MD at Sutton Harbour Holdings asked would never have been possible otherwise. The Graham to draw up a regeneration strategy. When you approach the Hoe from the city centre direction and it unfolds and you get that whole theatre of The Sound … it’s spectacular. And it brings people in.” Graham has every intention of continuing to play a role – and he’s looking forward to the firm’s 50th anniversary in 2024: “I don’t claim to have all the answers but in everything we’ve done, we’ve attempted to have a positive impact. He’s spent the past six weeks encouraging businesses to become founder members of the club for an annual donation of £240 – Cornerstone Vision, publishers of the Plymouth Magazine was among the first to join. He was due to reach his target of 110 Founder Members by the end of March 2018. The ultimate aim is to have 1,000 members, securing £240,000 a year for Improving Lives Plymouth. “There are real benefits for businesses, quite apart from helping the local community, because all the money is spent locally. We want local businesses to show their corporate responsibility. In return, we give them a place on a roll of honour on our website and a LinkedIn platform so that they can engage with fellow supporters.” For Steve, he’s relishing the chance to carry on making a difference: “I’ve never done this for a living before – and I am loving the work. Students get a taste of business success with their company, Made Cakes

A group of Plymouth students have launched their own company – selling individually-prepared cake and cookie ingredients in glass jars. The young entrepreneurs at the Focus School Plymouth Campus are selling so many, they’re struggling to keep up with the demand.

“With the fruit cake, we put the spices on the top so when you open the jar, you get this real hit of cinnamon, ginger and mixed spices,” added Alfie, 16. Another nice touch is that each jar carries the name of the student who prepared it. I am completely pain free now and can actually enjoy my job again,” she added. For an appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

“I had suffered pain in my feet in the past, but managed to cope by buying off-the-shelf insoles. But the new job led to unbearable pain, making it hard to stand up first thing in the morning. I needed to take painkiller all the time.” Laura knew that she would have to give up the job if the situation continued. “I was crippled up with pain.” “I knew I needed expert advice and was aware of Foot Solutions and the specialist help they provide. I visited the store and after a thorough investigation of my feet and my posture it became clear that I had very high arches in my feet. “It is a condition known as plantar fasciitis and the solution was for me to buy custom-made insoles along with Xsensible

When it comes to celebrating the life of someone special, hundreds of women across Plymouth choose to remember their loved ones by joining with like-minded ladies to light up the night with an abundance of colour and sparkle. Once a year, they gather for the city’s favourite girls’ night out, the Neon Midnight Walk, in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, walking a 3, 6 or 13.1 mile route through Plymouth to raise vital funds for the outstanding end of life care the charity provides. This year’s event, on Saturday July 21, is a special way for them to celebrate their memories of loved ones while creating new memories with their friends in a buzzing atmosphere, Diana Powell making a difference in their community. Among those getting their glow on will be Julie Barton and Diana Powell. Julie, 51 is a long-serving member of the team at Toshiba in Plymouth before she left to train as a nurse. Julie will join several fellow ‘Toshettes’ for the charity walk. Julie is putting on her trainers in memory of her sisterin-law, Donna, who passed away aged 51 in 2016, and close friend Toni, who died last November, also aged 51. Both were looked after by the specialist team at St Luke’s. Julie said: “Toni and Donna were both such special people and died far too young. Donna had such an engaging

personality. She was a real individual and loved by all who knew her. I will always remember Toni’s crazy humour and her strength. Even the week before she died, she was determined to make it into town to buy herself some new clothes – and she did. Joining Julie, is friend and fellow ‘Toshette’, Diana Powell. “For me personally, my husband Tony was desperately passionate about raising money for St Luke’s. In 2016 he did some cycling events for the charity, but unfortunately passed away a couple of weeks after that. This is my attempt to continue raising money on his behalf.” “I first came across St Luke’s about 15 years ago when a friends father was in Turnchapel Julie Barton and I was actually quite stunned about the level of care and compassion. St Luke’s is a caring place and the whole of Plymouth knows that, it’s just something that is out there and we need to keep on raising that profile and keep getting the money through to them.” The Neon Midnight Walk is sponsored by Nash & Co Solicitors. Registration is £22 and includes an exclusive neon t-shirt, as well as a medal and goody bag for all finishers.

Over 400 women from across Plymouth and the South West are expected to attend the annual Stilettos Women’s Conference taking place on April 28 at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall for a day of encouragement and empowerment. Birthed out of The Worship Centre in Estover, Stilettos Women’s Conference is now in its seventh year, and has grown from just 80 attendees to become one of the largest women’s events of its kind here in the South West. So, do they need to be able to read, write or recognise numbers before By Becky they start school? Whilst these skills Reckless help, they are not essential. All children starting school will have a wide range of Curriculum abilities and their teacher will be able to Manager of the help them progress at their own level. Roundabout Many parents ask me what they can Day Nursery do to help prepare their children for school. Below are just a few ideas: - talk to your child about their new school. Be excited with them, show them the school website and talk about their new teacher. - if possible, meet up with other children who will also be attending the same school to begin building friendships. - encourage your child to be independent, whether that is going to the toilet and washing their hands by themselves or putting on their coats and doing up the zip. Even simple things like blowing their own nose and putting the tissue in the bin. - encourage them to cut up their own food and use a knife and fork correctly. - encourage them to ask questions about the world around them and how things work. Foster a love of learning. - practise getting dressed in their uniform and P.E. kit independently (don’t forget to put your socks in your shoes!) - when putting their names in all their new school clothing, show them and practice recognising it. - when starting school many young children find it tiring so ensure you have a good bedtime routine that allows them to recharge their batteries with a full night’s sleep. One question that I am often asked by parents who have summer born children is are they too young? Should I keep them at nursery until they are older? Reception classes are set up in much the same way as pre-school settings, with a curriculum that centres on the children learning through play-based activities. The first year of school is about making friends and feeling secure in the new environment so holding children back from this is likely to cause more problems than solve them. With some preparation and encouragement most children will settle into school easily and be ready to continue their learning journey.

KITCHEN MATTERS

How KF Kitchens made Christine’s dream come true After two years of searching with no success, Christine Sharpe from Plympton had almost given up hope of ever finding her dream kitchen – until local family-owned company KF Kitchens came to the rescue. Christine visited showrooms across the South West in her quest, but it was a case of saving the best to last, when KF Kitchens came up trumps. Not only could they supply the kitchen she was looking for, but they also completed the installation with a high standard of customer service that made the experience “stress-free” for Christine and her husband, Russell. “We travelled as far as Bristol, looking at showrooms, and we visited all the big DIY chains but none of them had what I wanted,” said Christine. “I knew the colour I was looking for and Russell had drawn up the plans, but we couldn’t find anywhere that would accommodate us with the design. “Then we tried KF Kitchens, it was one of the last places we went into – and I’m so glad we did. We were very impressed by everyone there. They weren’t pushy, they allowed us to look around the showroom at our leisure. “ After bringing home a selection of samples from the KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Business Park, Christine and Russell opted for acrylic metallic blue gloss cupboards, with a grey Silestone worktop. Throughout the planning process, they were helped by KF Kitchens’ owners, Nathan and Derinda Damarell, and their team: “We had basically designed the kitchen ourselves and Nathan agreed that it would work well in the space,” said Christine. “It meant changing the layout completely so that we had

an open plan kitchen-diner-utility. We wanted the job done properly, which included taking away a wall and getting rid of the artexed ceiling. “Everything is new,” added Christine, “the units and worktops, the floors, the appliances, the lighting and electrics, the skirting boards, the plastering and the painting. And right from the start – from choosing the products and Nathan getting all the specifications – to the very end, when they cleared away all the rubbish – they’ve been brilliant to work with. There was no stress for us whatsoever.” KF Kitchens commissioned the worktops from Plymouth company Mayflower Stone, who supplied and installed them: “They were brilliant, too,” said Christine. Within six weeks of visiting the KF Kitchens showroom, the work to create Christine’s kitchen was under way. And, less than a month later, she had her dream kitchen: “It was four days before Christmas and I couldn’t have been happier!” said Christine, who chose in-built Neff appliances: “I had a free-standing oven before, so I’m enjoying having my two single Neff ovens at eye level.” The biggest ‘ask’ from Christine was that she didn’t want traditional straight-edged worktops and units: “I wanted curved edges – and they’ve done a fabulous job.” She also wanted the utility room to feel part of the kitchen, while also being distinct: “Again, they’ve done that just the way we wanted. “The entire kitchen now has a greater feeling of space and at the same time, I’ve got more storage because the cupboard space is much more efficient.” The feeling of space has been created by the streamlined design, the minimalist stainless steel handles, the oven with ‘slide

and hide’ doors and the cupboards that have doors that can retract when open. After her experience, Christine says she would have no hesitation in recommending KF Kitchens to others: “I was impressed with the whole process. They were friendly, efficient, professional and reliable. They kept me informed from start to finish and involved me in the process at all times. There were no hidden costs, so we had no nasty surprises at the end. They told us the ball-park figure at the start and the only times it increased was due to our choices to add certain items, such as the extra lighting. And that was entirely our choice. They never used hard-sell tactics or pushed us to add anything, so we were in control of our expenditure. “And now I’ve got a beautiful kitchen, which is also a real addition to our home.” Christine’s dream kitchen from KF Kitchens – the full spec: Kitchen: Acrylic metallic blue gloss cabinets with matching end panels, radius posts and concave doors, creating smooth curve. PROPERTY MATTERS

Forget the A-Team...meet the M-Team – and some other heroes for hire too! Mansbridge Balment Plymouth is packing some punch into its latest promotional campaign with the help of a smash hit TV series from the 80s. The undercover A-Team captured the imagination of viewers as every week, a band of fugitives wanted for a crime they didn’t commit, were available for hire to deliver justice for the little guy. The M-team are available for hire too, but they are on a mission to sell your home where other agents have failed to deliver. Statistics have already proved that, like Col John ‘Hannibal’ Smith and his boys, the M-Team are perfect for their particular job. In 2016, Mansbridge Balment’s two Plymouth branches agreed sales on more than £10 million worth of properties that had failed to sell with other agents. Now the M-Team campaign is looking to build on that successful track record. Billboard posters, leaflets and media adverts have been produced featuring a Mansbridge Balment pimped version of the A-Team’s famous black, transport van. Chris Mervyn, branch and marketing manager at the agency’s Plymouth City Office, said the campaign would be a lot of fun, but it carried a very valid sales message too. “We have been extremely successful in recent years in

securing a sale for those customers who didn’t get the right result from other agents,” said Chris. “We are a lot easier to hire than the A Team too, thanks to seven days a week opening at both our Plymouth branches.” Meanwhile, they may not be Vietnam vets like the A-Team, but ex-servicemen in Plymouth who are part of a veterans only handyman service taking the UK by storm are teaming up with the agency for the benefit of its clients. Former Royal Navy man John Stephenson and Ian Rosevear, who served in the Army, are with Heroes4Hire, which has a collaboration with the agency to offer customers access to a variety of property related trades, for repairs and other services. Heroes4Hire helps veterans pursue a new career opportunity as handymen, delivering a range of services, including painting and decorating, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, plastering and brickwork. Ian, who lives in Plymouth, said: “It’s a fantastic company to work for, just like being in the army – only you don’t get shot at!” Tony Carlton, branch manager at the Plymouth North Office in Woolwell, said Heroes4Hire is already working with a number of leading estate agency brands nationally, offering their services to both sales and lettings customers. He believes they could offer real added value for clients of both Mansbridge Balment’s Plymouth North and City Offices.

Green means go for seven-day opening at eco The eco-homes development at Roborough Park, Plymouth is now open seven days a week between 10am and 5pm to cope with the growing demand from eager house hunters. Developers behind the scheme on the northern outskirts of Plymouth, which is raising the bar for sustainable housing excellence, says it is the busiest of its current 11 UK sites. Over 500 visitors have viewed the development since it was first launched in August last year and more than 20 reservations have been taken by Mansbridge Balment’s Plymouth North Office, which is acting as sole marketing agents for the development. Branch director Kevin Buckingham said that the current five days a week opening wasn’t enough to cope with the interest

the high class, energy efficient homes is generating. “We need to add the two days to meet the demand and we have even taken on an extra member of staff to help deal with all the enquiries,” said Kevin. “The combination of contemporary styling and unbeatable green credentials of these eco-friendly properties have really captured the imagination, particularly as we are working with a developer that has set the benchmark for this type of scheme.” Recognised as one of the leading sustainable property specialists, Zero C has a total of 91 homes at the site, some of which were reserved before building work even got underway. Two, three, four and five bedroom homes are available

ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS and SOLAR SYSTEMS “As we have a very strong services connection here in Plymouth, it is the perfect fit for us,” said Tony. “Heroes4Hire is a very professional brand, which already has considerable experience in the property sector, so we are extremely confident in recommending their services to our customers.” Launched in April 2017, Heroes4Hire is the brainchild of former RAF serviceman Nigel Blanchard, founder and chief executive of the company. Nigel realised there was a gap in the market for a professional, handyman service built on the values of the armed forces and trialled the scheme initially in the North West of England, where he currently lives. Ian, 35, and 52-year-old John, who lives in Newquay, Cornwall, are now part of a 45 strong team of handymen working under three area managers, covering the North West, East Midlands, South England, as well as the South West. “Plymouth is a good area to set up given the city’s association with service personnel and our target is to have a 100 veterans across the UK on board by the end of the year, both men and women” said Nigel. “When people leave the service it tends to be that sense of family that they really miss and what we have been able to do with Heroes4Hire is to create a new family for them to be a part of. It does feel like more of a family than a company.”

The monumental sculpture, which will be on display in the historic barn until September 23, is four metres high and was commissioned by the Greater London Council for Peace Year in 1983. Usually on display at the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture in Wales the Cosmic Egg this is a rare chance for locals to Buckland Abbey to see this beautiful piece. The egg reflects themes of spring rebirth and of course Easter. As a focus for reflection it also seems right to host the Cosmic Egg in a place chosen over 700 years ago by Cistercian monks as perfect for prayer and contemplation. The promise and celebration of the birth of life, peace and harmony comprised in the egg form meant the Cosmic Egg was a perfect symbol for Peace Year in 1983. It offered a form that could encompass the spiritual and mental world: the guiding forces in human nature, the excitement of space. The egg is viewed by many as the universal symbol of the life principle and the mirrored shell of this egg represents cosmic time and space swirling to reflect the world today. James Breslin, Buckland Abbey’s house & visitor experience manager said: “We are thrilled to continue working with an artist of Andrew Logan’s calibre and to bring his work to Buckland. Hosting his iconic Cosmic Egg is a perfect final flourish of the Art of Reflection exhibition. We hope our visitors will be surprised, inspired, and perhaps even challenged, by discovering the Cosmic Egg sculpture in the tranquil and unique setting of Buckland.” Andrew Logan has said: “Everything starts with an egg, you start the day with an egg, you can go to work on an egg, we are even born from an egg, except this egg is a cosmic egg. “It is very difficult to conceive the universe. You can’t see it, yet it is all around you; so vast you can only begin to come to terms with it through mathematics, or art.’ “It is a joy working with Buckland Abbey and drawing inspiration from its great beauty, peace and tranquility, resting in the Devon hills and so full of history’. National Trust contemporary art programme manager Grace Davies said: “For over five years visitors have been coming to experience Trust New Art, our rich and diverse program of contemporary arts at properties across the country inspired by National Trust places. “Continuing the spirit of Trust New Art, this vibrant exhibition by Andrew Logan shines a new light on Buckland Abbey, giving visitors the opportunity to experience contemporary creativity that is rooted in our unique heritage.”

Divorce in a Digital Era and the Duty of Disclosure In an era of technological evolution, the emphasis on our duty to make a full financial disclosure in financial proceedings is even more important. There is a requirement for both parties to disclose all assets even those unusual items such as paintings, or unique artwork and in this digital age, we also have to consider assets Alice Blackmore such as Bitcoins. What are Bitcoins? Bitcoins are a digital currency known as a cryptocurrency and are held electronically in a decentralised system meaning no one and no government controls it. The investment in Bitcoin is ever increasing and it is likely that they will become a far more common asset in divorce proceedings. How are Bitcoins treated? Bitcoins will be treated like any other asset in proceedings. In most cases where the parties have been in a long marriage, the Courts of England and Wales adopt the

‘sharing principle’ and will share the assets which have accrued throughout the length of marriage however, this is only a starting point and can be departed from depending on a number of factors. Therefore, in theory, the Court will have to consider the value of Bitcoin and account for its value when trying to assess the appropriate financial settlement. However, as Bitcoins are a relatively new financial instrument, there is no clear guidance from the courts on this. Effects of non-disclosure There is an ongoing duty to disclose details of your assets in a divorce but unfortunately there are some parties who make a concerted effort to try and hide their assets so they are not able to be taken into consideration. The nature of Bitcoin means that users can transfer money directly from one person to another without a bank or government authority and as a result Bitcoin has been viewed as an asset with potential to be hidden in divorce proceedings. If a divorce settlement concludes only for

www.wolferstans.com 01752 292288 www.cornerstonevision.com

it to later emerge that an asset or assets that should have been disclosed weren’t and as a result, one party is disadvantaged then they could ask the court to set aside the original order. Or if for example, it is late in the proceedings that the asset emerges the court may order that party to pay the costs that have been wasted due to nondisclosure. Attempting to hide assets of any kind will result in that party being in contempt of court and every effort will be made to ensure the parties are truthful about their assets. However, in this digital age it is likely we will see a greater variety of unusual assets which will require a specific skill to track down. Divorce proceedings are complicated. At Wolferstans, we have a specialist family law team who can guide you through the process and ensure that you receive a fair financial settlement. TRAVEL MATTERS

So-called ‘sun bed tax’ sparks controversy in the travel industry Nothing ever fails to surprise me in the travel industry these days; not least the costing structure of package holidays. It really doesn’t seem that long ago that, when booking a holiday, you could expect to check in your baggage, choose your seat, enjoy an in-flight meal and be transferred to your accommodation...all included within the package price! More recently however, many of these ‘elements’ that we took for granted as part of a holiday package are considered as extras and charged for accordingly. It has seemingly enabled tour operators to boost profits by adding a margin to each chargeable product or service as they are constantly looking at new ideas and optional extras to offer. Thomas Cook have recently announced that holidaymakers travelling to a selection of their hotels will be able to pay in advance to reserve a sun bed for the duration of their holiday at a cost of £22 per person per week. By Travel This latest idea has sparked a huge reaction and difference of opinion in the travel industry; some are calling it a step too far and effectively labeling it as a ‘sun bed tax’ while others are commending them for offering clients greater choice and the facility to guarantee their place by the pool. As a travel agent, I can see both sides of the debate and I strongly believe that this is a very personal choice that will only appeal to certain individuals. I can distinctly remember travelling on holiday with a young family when both of my children were under 10 years old and having to wake up very early in the morning to reserve sun beds near the pool with a parasol. It was obviously more of an issue in some resorts than others, but essential to do as we needed to secure a shaded area with two young children and there was often simply not enough loungers or parasols to go around. On those occasions, I would have happily paid to reserve sun beds in advance to avoid the ‘walk of shame’ at 7am in a race to beat other families to those prized positions. Now that our children have left home and my wife and I holiday alone, I would be very reluctant to pay to reserve sun beds and I probably wouldn’t travel to a resort where this was deemed necessary.

There has been a great deal of comment and controversial opinion about this idea since it was unveiled a few weeks ago. Many valid questions have been asked such as, how will I know if my sun bed is actually in the sun for the best part of the day and what will happen if someone occupies my sun bed and refuses to vacate it? To summarise, I think in principle it is a good idea, particularly for young families but the procedure needs more clarity as it could be vulnerable to certain problems. I would be interested to hear readers views on this matter so please get in touch. Expert While the travel industry has witnessed the introduction of some great ideas, which have effectively become payable (albeit optional) extras, there have also been some deeply unpopular ones. Like many others, I particularly resent the idea of having to pay what can be a considerable amount of extra money to select a specific seat on the aircraft when I have already paid for the flight. I feel that this is the most unfair and least justifiable charge of all. A recent study conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) concluded that air passengers could collectively be paying an extra £400 million per year in charges for allocated seating. The research, covering more than 4,000 passengers who had flown as part of a group of two or more people in the last twelve months, found that an average of 18% were separated when they did not pay extra to be seated together. The study found the biggest culprits for separating couples and families were Ryanair (35%) followed by Emirates (22%). while Virgin Atlantic separated 18% of it’s passengers, Jet2 a slightly better 16% with British Airways, easyjet and Thomas Cook Airlines all at 15%. Only 12% of travellers using Flybe or TUI Airways (formerly Thomson) faced being split up on the flight for not having paid to reserve particular seats.

Anthony Goord

The CAA subsequently launched a review demanding more information from airlines about allocated seating practices with a primary objective to establish whether consumers are being treated fairly and whether pricing policies are transparent. The most annoying aspect of this whole controversial policy over seat allocation appears to be that if you do not pay to pre-book your seat, airlines seem to deliberately allocate you seats apart and/or in the most unpopular location on board the aircraft. For example, a single passenger on a long haul flight would most likely be given a middle seat in a row of three or four, which is inevitably less comfortable and more inconvenient. If travelling as a family, particularly with children, I find it totally unacceptable that you are allocated seats in different rows and I think most passengers would not be very happy about this. However, most airlines appear to do this on the basis that people will feel forced into paying the seat allocation fee to avoid this, rather than merely offering this as part of the service. As you can see from the percentage figures I have quoted above, not all airlines are practicing making our travel experience more difficult; there are some notable exceptions who still offer free seat selection or who will always attempt to seat groups together despite the fact that they may not have paid a seat selection fee. Travellers can therefore protest against the worst culprits in the airline industry by refusing to fly with them and thus forcing a policy change! Finally, as I write this months article Karen Henderson, our longest serving member of staff, is on a fabulous educational to Australia. Karen has been to many parts of the world before but this is her first time to Australia. Look out for her article in next months issue on her thoughts and experiences on her first trip ‘down under’. Expert advice from Roper James helped former dockyard worker to receive compensation Ray Jones worked in Devonport Dockyard for more than 40 years - and it eventually cost him his life. After starting work at the age of 15, Ray had a number of different jobs at the dockyard, including working on naval ships stripping lagging. It was here that he was exposed to asbestos, but at the time little was known about the devastating effect this could have in later life. Ray took early retirement at the age of 59 and then kept himself busy and active. He was generally fit and well - until March 2016 when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the age of 75. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, which develops in the lining of the lungs and is closely linked to asbestos exposure. Hundreds of former dockyard workers have been affected by the condition and millions of pounds of compensation have been paid to the victims. Ray’s family were obviously devastated by the news. As Raymond’s diagnosis was poor I pulled out all the stops to ensure his claim was settled during his life time,” he added. Debbie added: “The MOD eventually admitted liability and Roper James were successful in securing substantial compensation in a short space of time. “The compensation meant that we had the resources to provide comfort and care for my father in the last few months of his life. GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre Now is the perfect time of year to get started in your vegetable garden. The worst of the cold weather is behind us and it’s time to get going again. Start by digging over the soil in your beds to break it up and incorporate plenty of fresh, organic matter, such as compost or composted farm yard manure. Dig in a balanced fertiliser to enrich the soil such as Fish, Blood and Bone, Growmore or Chicken Manure Pellets. If you are growing in containers, empty out the old compost and add fresh. Preparing the ground or container is the first and most important step to ensuring success and a bumper crop. Having healthy, fertile soil is the best start your plants can get. It’s the key to strong, healthy and tasty plants, do that part right and all you’ll have to do throughout the growing season is keep your plants well-watered and given the occasional feed. If you are creating a bed from scratch or only have space for a few pots, then selecting the area in which to grow your fruit and vegetables is hugely important. The best spot in the garden for growing, will be the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have. Vegetable plants tend to be mostly annual plants, so grow from seed to maturity in a relatively short space of time and this requires a lot of energy. The more sunlight they have, the better they’ll grow. Being sheltered from damaging spring winds will help to protect the plants when they are young and delicate. Once you have your chosen spot and the ground or pots are prepared, the next job will be choosing what to grow. This can seem overwhelming as there are so many different varieties of each type of fruit and vegetable and so many to choose from. The best advice I can offer those starting from scratch

Tips on how to mak garden - or basket

is simply only grow what you’ll eat. There’s no point in growing every type of vegetable there is to grow if you don’t like them. They’ll only go to waste and they will be taking up valuable space that could have otherwise been used to grow something you do like. Another piece of advice I’ll offer is avoid growing things that take up a lot of space for a long time that produce very little yield, Photo: Fotolia such as main crop potatoes, parsnips and Brussel sprouts. On the subject of space, if you only have a small patch or a few pots and want maximum yield from your crops then I’d recommend cut and come again crops. Plants such as runner beans, French beans, peas and broad beans can be picked on a weekly basis and still continue to produce more. Cut and come again lettuce, perpetual spinach, rocket, chard and kale are fantastic leafy greens for repeat harvesting. With tomatoes, cucumber, courgettes, chillies and peppers, the more you pick, the more they crop. Other space saving ideas for growing fruits and vegetables include companion planting. Tomatoes have been traditionally grown in grow bags for years and this has always proved to be pretty reliable, but they can also be grown up bamboo canes in large pots. Either way is productive, but don’t let the soil at the feet of the tomato plants go to waste, plant that space up with strawberries. They enjoy the same growing conditions and feeding regime as tomatoes, or alternatively, what goes great with tomatoes? Basil! Grow basil at the feet of your tomatoes and pick together at the same time for a tasty treat. You can also grow strawberries at the base of fruit bushes to maximise your growing space. Window boxes are great for growing salads in. For example, a 60cm (2ft) window box is perfect for growing an entire salad with cut and come again lettuce, spring onions, tomatoes and radish. This is a quick and easy project that can be cropped from a few weeks and kept going throughout summer. Once the radishes and spring onions have been cropped, they can

ke the most of your and window box be sown again. Hanging baskets are actually surprisingly effective for growing certain crops. Herbs will grow very well in baskets, while bush and trailing tomatoes such as ‘Tumbling Tom’ and ‘Totem’ both do well in baskets. Strawberries are great in baskets, and are high enough off the ground that slugs and snails can’t eat the fruit, and for the same reason, lettuces perform excellently in hanging baskets because they are out of the reach of slugs and snails. Dwarf chillies, such as the Bird’s Eye types also do really well in hanging baskets: just make sure you feed them and water them regularly. Fruit bushes, such as blueberries and cranberries, grown in pots can be very successful, especially those that require different soil types which your garden may not have such. They both require damp, ericaceous soil, which is easily achievable in a pot. They also need a position in dabbled shade, so can be moved around in their pots until the perfect spot is found. Thanks to new breeding techniques , dwarf varieties of raspberry and blackberry are now available and both are perfect for pot growing and for small areas. They are thornless and only grow to a height and spread of 90cm (3’). Larger growing trees such as apples, pears, cherries and plums can be grown in pots if they have been grafted onto dwarfing or semi-dwarfing root stocks. These will only grow to modest sizes and are perfect for small gardens. If space is really tight and you still want to grow fruit trees, then espaliered fruit trees could be the solution. These are fruit trees on dwarf root stocks trained to be grown flat against a wall. They take up minimal space, can be grown very happily in a pot and are surprisingly productive. No matter whether your vegetable plot is an allotment, a few beds or just a few pots, growing your own tastes far superior to supermarket produce, is much easier to do than you think and is extremely rewarding.
