2022 saw the end of Covid restrictions and a qualified optimism for the year ahead, after two challenging years for the On Trade. However, to borrow Harold Macmillan’s great maxim, “events, dear boy, events”, little did any of us expect the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent inflationary energy price crisis. These twin issues of inflation and high energy prices pose a continuing challenge to all of us this year, but we believe that it is in times such as these that the fundamentals of our business, those of quality of product, of service and relationships between Corney & Barrow and its customers are paramount. In this, we will continue to strive to provide the most reliable advice and the most efficient and reliable service to our customers.

Our Buying Team have been hard at work throughout the year, not only dealing with the many and varied logistical issues caused by the pandemic to ensure what has been a

remarkably seamless continuity of stock, but also in finding some wonderful and exciting new agencies. The variety and diversity of the agencies is testament to that work: these include two new great estates in South Africa, some fabulous Cremants from Jura, more estates from various areas of Italy, wines from Lebanon, Australia’s Margaret River, Chile, the Languedoc, the Loire and even Burgundy! These new wines can be seen in the New Wine section of the list.

Despite the ongoing difficult economic environment and global uncertainties, we believe that 2023 is a year of opportunity, where the maintenance of a qualitative offering by both us and our customers in all aspects of our businesses will bring dividends. Adversity has been the Mother of Invention over the past few years for the sector and stands us in a good place to rise to the challenges of 2023.

Champagne Salon has an almost mythical status in the wine world, prized for its extreme finesse, rarity, and incredible longevity. Salon is the legacy of one man Aimé Salon, born in the late 1800s, whose picaresque life story saw him rise from poor beginnings in rural Champagne to great wealth and the glittering social circuit of Paris. He loved champagne, and decided to create his own. Obsessed with chardonnay - in his view the only grape capable of true finesse - he planted le jardin de Salon, the now legendary chalk-rich vineyard in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, from which Salon is still made. The original blanc de blancs, Salon is made in minuscule quantities and exceptional vintages only, a few times a decade.

CHAMPAGNE DELAMOTTE

Delamotte is the sixth oldest Champagne house, founded in 1760. Like sister-house Champagne Salon, with whom it shares premises in the grand cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Delamotte is a devotee of the chardonnay grape. Despite its heritage and quality, Delamotte remains a discreet name, something of an insider’s champagne ‘pour ceux qui savent’ (“for those in the know”). Impeccable vineyards and extended lees ageing yield wines of great delicacy and refinement.

Ambriel was founded in 2006 by married couple Wendy and Charles Outhwaite, who left successful careers as a QC and financier in London, to pursue their dream of making English sparkling wine. Their beautiful estate in West Sussex spans 9.5 hectares of south-facing slopes, planted to classic champagne varieties on prized greensand soils. The vineyards are run ‘in sympathy with nature’, requiring meticulous attention to detail. The Ambriel style is fragrant and distinctive, somehow unmistakeably English with its refreshing crunch of cox, succulent acids, and delicate lacy texture, the result of extended lees ageing.

BREAKY BOTTOM

The tiny, legendary estate of Breaky Bottom is hidden away in a secluded dry chalk valley in the South Downs of East Sussex, just two miles from the English Channel. Founder Peter Hall discovered the run-down farm in the 1970s and spotted its viticultural potential immediately, first making still wines (highly acclaimed), then turning to traditional method sparkling wines from the champagne varieties as well as the hybrid Seyval Blanc, first planted here in 1974. At Breaky Bottom, the vines are sacrosanct. Peter spends virtually all his waking hours tending the vineyards, sheep in tow. His unwavering attention to detail is entirely necessary: he pushes harvest dates to the wire, seeking to attain ripeness levels to match naturally high acids. So the grapes must be kept in peak condition into the Autumn. Thereafter the secret is time: the wines spend up to seven years ageing on their lees, developing their renowned textural finesse and myriad complex flavours.

The late Jean-Pierre Moueix founded Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937 in Libourne, Bordeaux, particularly concentrating on relatively unkown Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. In the 1950s, Jean-Pierre grew the merchanting business but also, very astutely, began to acquire properties, notably, Châteaux Trotanoy, La Grave and Latour à Pomerol and Bélair, renamed as Bélair-Monange. The company today headed by Chistian Moueix and his son Édouard is responsible for distributing many of the most revered wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol which they have driven from obscurity to the heights of worldwide demand.

TERTRE ROTEBOEUF

François Mitjavile is a man unto himself, not even conforming in his non-conformity. He turned his back on a conventional life to embrace the challenges of making fine wine. He resolutely gets on with things, in his own way, producing staggeringly good Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Nurturing this six hectare amphitheatre of cool clay-limestone, François, aided and abetted by his wife Miloute, his sons Louis, Henri and daughter Nina, produce what is now something of a cult wine, gloriously decadent, supple and complex.

L’AURAGE

This is Louis Mitjavile’s own property, an excellent site in upcoming Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux, neighbour to, and an extension of the limestone clay slope of Saint-Émilion. Louis cut his teeth in both the vineyard and the cellar, at Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, working alongside his father François Mitjavile. Louis had set his heart on acquiring his own property and seized upon this lovely property, taking full control from the 2007 vintage. Merlot accounts for almost the entirety of the 15 hectares, with diminishing amounts of Cabernet Franc. L’Aurage is always a crowdpleaser and something of a rising star, luscious and seductively ripe.

The Dugat family have been growers in GevreyChambertin since the early 17th century. Loїc Dugat, son of Bernard Dugat, is the 13th generation. Several wines are labelled “Très Vieilles Vignes”, in recognition of the estate’s particularly old vines. Several vineyards have recently been converted to the high-trellised tressage system of vine training. Under Loїc’s direction, the domaine has embarked on a renewed path of detail-focused viticulture and sensitive cellar management, the results of which are just beginning to be seen. The tenderness and elegance of recent vintages marks the beginning of the next chapter of Dugat-Py, and one which we are thrilled and honoured to be a part of.

These vineyards encompass so many of the greatest grands crus; Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, Échézeaux, Corton-Bressandes, CortonCharlemagne, Chevalier Montrachet and Montrachet, as well as a host of premiers crus traversing Beaune, Volnay and Meursault, the latter, home to the domaine - an eye-watering collection. Édouard Labruyère took the helm here in 2008 – a breath of fresh air, inspirational and with tremendous vision and ambition for Domaine Jacques Prieur. These vineyards are in extremely safe hands not least those of award-winning oenologist Nadine Gublin.

DOMAINE VINCENT DAMPT

Vincent Dampt is the scion of one of the most respected winemaking families in Chablis, the son of Daniel Dampt and grandson of Jean Defaix. After training in Burgundy and Marlborough, New Zealand, Vincent returned to Chablis armed with modern perspectives to complement traditional winemaking approaches. Rigour in the vineyard is paramount, while his wines are made using the purest juice and only the finest lees. The Dampt style is elegant and pure yet accessible, with the textural delicacy and classic crushed shell profile of the appellation.

OLIVIER LEFLAIVE

Olivier Leflaive’s operation is surely without parallel in Burgundy, as impressive for the sheer range of wines as for their consistency and quality year on year. The house philosophy is built on respect for the vines and those who tend them. While the house continues to buy grapes from the same 120 or so small vignerons who have supplied them for years, Olivier also owns vineyards in the Côte, managed by legendary technical team. Olivier’s house style combines elegance, freshness and approachability, geared for pleasure. True to appellation and cru, the wines are style classics.

François Carillon is the sixteenth generation of farmers based in Burgundy’s revered PulignyMontrachet. François is a viticulturalist of the highest quality, tirelessly striving to produce the best grapes possible. He is fortunate in his vine parcels – splendid sites in both Puligny and Chassagne. Therein lie the secrets of his wines –terroir, and sheer hard graft on the part of team Carillon. The wines have an innate purity about them, an attractive mineral focus and a real sense of place.

Observing the unmistakable hill of Corton, essentially you are looking at Bonneau du Martray – one block of eleven hectares. In 2017, the Le Bault de La Morinière family – only the third set of owners in twelve centuries - sold a majority share to another great vineyard custodian, E. Stanley Kroenke (of California’s Screaming Eagle, Jonata and The Hilt). The Domaine benefits enormously from his commitment and investment – so exciting. This unique vineyard creates wines of precision and grace.

There have been vine-growing Auvigues in the Mâconnais since the early 1600s, but Maison Auvigue, as the business is now known, was first established in 1946. The family owns vineyards in Fuissé and Solutré, and buys fruit from a handful of excellent local growers. In an exciting new chapter, Maison Auvigue has recently moved to new premises - the ancient, deconsecrated church in the village square of Fuissé, which the Auvigues carefully remodelled and restored to beauty. The purchase came with an impressive vineyard too, currently under renovation. Winemaker Céline Hirsch, mentored by Jean-Pierre Auvigue, creates wines true to their terroir, with the accent on freshness and mineral purity.

The Labruyère family have owned vineyards in Moulin-à-Vent since 1850, around the foot of the iconic windmill. Édouard Labruyère, at the helm since 2008, is determined to produce wines which are ambassadors for this great terroir. His attention to detail shows in the wines. Fragile soils dictate the vineyards are worked by hand or with a horse. Team Labruyère is usually the last to harvest their relatively small production, aiming for total, physiological as well as technical ripeness. Impressive, serious food wines, true to place but more akin to Northern Rhône or Burgundy in style.

Gilles Lesimple is the fourth generation of a vinegrowing family. He trained in the US before returning to Sancerre in 1997 to take over the family estate. After many years of selling his grapes to the local cooperative, he now produces his own bottles to supply in France and for export. His is not a single estate, rather a collection of top-quality sites acquired over time by the Lesimple family. The parcels are in the commune of Sancerre itself (prized for its calcareous soils, known as caillottes) as well as Saint Satur (known for its flint), Sury-en-Vaux and Verdigny (both on predominantly calcareous clays). The resulting fruit provides an exceptional range of blending material.

Domaine de Saint-Romble is located in the hamlet of Maimbray, part of the commune of Sury-en-Vaux, in the heart of the Sancerre appellation. Its sloping vineyards – the so-called ‘Pente de Maimbray’ –comprise pure terres blanches (calcareous clay) soils, classic of the appellation. The domaine was created by Louis Vattan in the 19th century. His grandson Paul joined the estate in 1954, expanding it progressively to its current 12.5 hectares. His viticultural approach was rooted in a respect for the land and a deep understanding of its terroir. Paul was an excellent winegrower, known for his meticulous working methods, upheld today by vigneron Damien Laurent, who now runs the estate.

Domaine La Croix Saint-Laurent is a small family domaine based in the hamlet of Bué, in the heart of the Sancerre appellation. Since 1932, the estate has been in the hands of the Cirotte family, who make classical Sancerres from steep hillside vineyards, farmed sustainably. The estate comprises 10.5 hectares in Bué, just a few kilometres from the village of Sancerre itself. Bué has a mix of soils comprising classic caillottes (stony calcareous soils), terres blanches (calcareous clays), and terres rouges (portlandian clays) with some silex (flint). Its steep hillside vineyards, mix of altitudes and ideal aspects also give exceptional ripening conditions.

Sixth generation vine-grower Julien Braud is part of a new wave of young vignerons spearheading a Muscadet renaissance. After his studies, Julien gained experience at the family estate ‘Fief aux Dames’ before branching out on his own in 2012, a long-held dream. His initial, modest three hectares in the ‘cru’ Monnières, have since grown to thirteen, encompassing a number of discrete parcels with slightly different soils and microclimates. They are farmed organically by Julien and his wife Apolline, who spend the majority of their time in the vineyards ‘where the wine is made’. These are distinctive wines, all subtly different, with a precise mineral profile and palpable sense of place.

CLAU DE NELL

Clau de Nell is located in the village of AmbillouChâteau, in Maine-et-Loire, between Angers and Saumur. The domaine’s story began in 2006 when Anne-Claude Leflaive and husband Christian Jacques met the previous owners and were struck with the quality of the site, the age of the vines and the biodynamic principles already followed in the vineyards. In 2008, in a bid to save the property from insolvency, Anne-Claude and Christian took the decision to purchase it. One of the guiding principles at Clau de Nell is Anne-Claude’s firm belief that winemakers should place nature at the heart of what they do, and wherever possible harmonise with the natural environment rather than resist it.

Domaine Bernard Fleuriet et Fils was originally a farm, but in 1991 Bernard Fleuriet embarked on a project to convert his family land to vineyards. Planted predominantly on the steep slopes of Menetou-Râtel, in the Sancerre appellation, the vineyards feature the three key soils of Sancerre: caillottes (stony calcareous soils), terres blanches (calcareous clays) and silex (flint). This combination provides a diverse palette of fruit, from which to create complex blends. Bernard’s sons are now at the helm, Benoit focusing on viticulture while his brother Matthieu oversees the winemaking. Together they converted the estate to organic production (certified in 2016) and then to biodynamics (2022).

Michel Tardieu, joined now by oenologist son Bastien, is a négociant-éleveur, buying wines according to the quality of the vineyard, in their raw, fermented state. They then look after blending and maturation. Accurate translation of terroir and vintage, fundamental to the Tardieu mindset means intervention is minimal. To ensure top quality ingredients, Michel and Bastien build up long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with a network of producers, who own specific, quality parcels of largely old vines. In 1998, when vigneron Franck Faugier returned to his family estate in Crozes-Hermitage, it was part of a local cooperative. By 2003, Franck had taken the domaine out of the coop system entirely. Twelve of his seventeen hectares are located on the highlyprized terroir of “Les Châssis”, in the south of the appellation. Its riverside terraces on ancient alpine diluvium soils - a combination of heat-reflecting galets roulés (rounded stones), coarse sand and red clay - give perfect conditions for ripening Syrah. Respectful of the land, Franck has converted to organic viticulture, and follows some biodynamic approaches too. His aim is to create pure-fruited, supple wines, true to their terroir.

The Gonnet family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was developed in the 1950s. Its quality credentials could not be more impressive: thirty hectares of vineyards running up to Le Crau (arguably the most revered vineyard plot in the Châteauneuf-duPape appellation); sunny south/south-east facing slopes; soils littered with prized, heat-reflecting galets roulés (pudding stones); and low-yielding 110 year old vines. The wines have a common stylistic thread: while the region’s classic baked fruit is here in spades, they display a hallmark freshness and aromatic vivacity.

Both estates are owned and run by Régine Sumeire, third generation winemaker, one of the first female winemakers in the region, and – equally important to note - the pioneer of the pale pink rosé that has become Provence’s signature wine.

Régine honours long-held family traditions in her deep respect for the land. The vineyards are farmed sustainably – vineyards are ploughed by horse, chemical treatments are forbidden. Both properties are certified organic, and follow biodynamic practices (Barbeyrolles is now certified biodynamic). Winemaking is equally attentive, aiming to treat the grapes as gently as possible at all times to create the elegant stylistic signature of both estates. Subtly different, they share nonetheless the diaphanous pale pink colour, aromatic delicacy, gentle creamy palate texture and mineral length.

CHÂTEAU LA TOUR DE L’EVÊQUE

Château La Tour de l’Evêque is a beautiful property in deep Provence, surrounded by forest and garrigue. Steeped in history, many centuries ago the château was the summer home of the bishops of Toulon (the name translates as the ‘Tower of the Bishop’). The estate was purchased in 1958 by Gabriel Sumeire and is run today by his grand-daughter Régine Sumeire and her nephew Pierre-François de Bernardi. The vineyards have been run organically for many years and the team are now going one step further, aiming to achieve biodynamic certification. Winemaking is equally attentive. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts under careful temperature control; all wines go through malolactic fermentation, enhancing the wines’ delicate creamy texture.

Régine Sumeire bought a rather delapidated Château Barbeyrolles in 1977 and spent years restoring this small estate. It was here, in 1985, that she had the idea of creating a different style of rosé from the more robust, deeper-coloured rosés typical of the time. She experimented with the ‘coquard’ barrel press - used in champagne, and noted for the delicacy of juices it yields. Régine’s ‘new’ rosé was a revelation - diaphanous in colour, with subtle flavours, textural finesse and length on the palate. Initially derided, the pale pink wine Régine created has become the defining profile of Provence rosé. today, Barbeyrolles is an insider cult classic; the original Provence rosé, a pioneering style for all time.

Maison Azan (also known as Domaine de Petit Roubié) lies at the heart of the Picpoul de Pinet appellation, and is owned by renowned husband and wife team, Olivier and Floriane Azan. A passionate advocate for organic methods, Olivier was the first domaine to be certified organic (in 1985). The vineyards span 80 hectares of land around the ‘Bassin de Thau’ the second largest lagoon in France, next to the Mediterranean Sea. Languedoc newcomer La Pèira is steadily putting Les Terrasses du Larzac on the wine map. Since the inaugural 2005 vintage, Robert Dougan and his Languedoc-born wife Karine Ahton’s wines have won fast-growing acclaim. Hailing from Australia, Robert is a musician and the writer of the 1995 hit ‘Clubbed to Death’, subsequently used in The Matrix films. La Pèira is situated on a terrace of drained glacial, Bordeaux-like gravels. Fastidious attention to detail in all aspects has made for whites of nuanced texture and complex, herb-infused reds of stature and energy.

This Mosel estate dates back to 1636. Tunella is a small family winery based in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, near the Italian border with Slovenia, and benefits from a unique microclimate between the mighty Dolomites and the Adriatic sea. The hilly countryside here is carpeted with vines grown on sunny terraces. The soils here - known locally as ‘ponca’ - are held to contribute to the distinctive textural purity and subtle flavour complexity of the local wines. La Tunella produces characterful, expressive wines, from international grapes as well as indigenous varieties found only in the region.

LA SOURCE

La Source is a small family estate located in the heart of the Aosta Valley in far north-west Italy, close to the French and Swiss borders. The name “La Source” comes from the French term for ‘spring’, given to the winery as it was being built, when a natural underground spring was discovered. The area is one of the homes of so-called ‘heroic viticulture’. The vines grow on harsh terrain, highly mountainous with steep terraces, so everything must be carried out by hand, often on uneven and vertiginous slopes. The high altitude - up to 920m above sea level - helps the wines attain their trademark Alpine freshness and fine seam of acidity.

TENUTA PRINCIPE ALBERICO

Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, Prince of Venosa, inherited this breath-taking property in 1946. It lies on Rome’s famous Appian Way and was, in Ian d’Agata’s words, “often in the same quality league as Sassicaia or Solaia.” However, the Prince pulled out almost all the vines shortly before his death. Since then, his granddaughter Alessia Antinori has lovingly breathed new life into what is now a thriving estate. The property takes the idea of ‘small’ to a new level. There are just eight rows of vines - four planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc with the remainder to Semillon. The Semillon vines having been made available by a family friend of Alessia’s and cultivated organically since the 1970s.

This Montalcino estate is an exciting new addition to our Tuscan portfolio. Ridolfi has a long history stretching back to 1290. In 2011, Giuseppe Valter Peretti bought the estate and was joined in 2014 by Gianni Maccari, previously the winemaker of Poggio di Sotto. His son Filippo recently joined him after completing his oenological studies. Ridolfi is located in Mercatali, once the hub for a large annual market. It has 30 hectares of land, of which 11.4 hectares are dedicated to Brunello vines, 6.5 hectares to Chianti Colli Senesi and 1 hectare to Rosso di Montalcinoplus 700 olive trees!

The Antinori name resonates throughout the wine world but Marchese Lodovico Antinori is pitched at a unique frequency. Legendary, maverick, genius, headstrong – all apply – but his imagination, vision and drive create world class wines. Rings no bells? Think Ornellaia and Masseto, of old, and now, the great Biserno – all created by Lodovico. In Bibbona, coastal, western Tuscany, cooled by sea breezes, the geology here is better suited to Bordeaux varietals than the ubiquitous Sangiovese. Outstanding food wines.

Cecilia Beretta is something of a jewel in the crown of the Pasqua family operation, showcasing traditional and innovative styles from notable vineyards in Valpolicella, Soave and the wider Veronese area. Created originally in the early eighties as an institute for advanced viticultural research, the operation was named after the Beretta family and its heiress Cecilia, noblewoman, artist and benefactor, who had inherited a splendid villa with extensive vineyards on the eastern side of Verona. Today, the Pasqua family continues to uphold her legacy of creativity and philanthropy, sponsoring rising talent in fields as diverse as the culinary arts, ballet and sport.

Traditional methods, geared for quality and consistency, mean back-breaking work in the vineyards and attention to detail in the winemaking process. Family-owned and run Cantina Menegotti is based near Lake Garda in north-east Italy. The estate acquired a discreet reputation for its contemporary take on classic local styles, aiming for wines with purity of fruit and a sense of place. Its enviable location, with stunning views, provides a unique microclimate for grape growing. The vineyards are protected by the Alps and the lake water helps moderate temperature variations. The distinctive morainic soil, rich in mineral salts, is thought to impart mineral notes to the wines. Now run by the third generation, the Menegotti family combines local varietals to create elegant wines with bright aromatics and expressive fruit favours.

Leonardo Bussoletti’s estate lies in the valley of Narni in southern Umbria. Said to have inspired C.S Lewis’ Narnia, this is a remote area of wild, sometimes inhospitable, beauty. Inspired by what he calls ‘the noble art of wine’ and particularly Burgundy, Umbrian native Leonardo dreamt of creating wines that would honour Umbria in a similar way. When he inherited nine hectares, he set out to champion ancient local grapes, such as Grechetto, on chalkyclay soils. His vineyards are fully organic, tended with utmost rigour. Craftsmanship, uniqueness and sustainability are his watchwords; his aim: to achieve wines of finesse, with a sense of place.

Danish-born, Bordeaux-trained, Peter Sisseck believed that Ribera del Duero had the potential to produce Spain’s finest wines. He sought out parcels of ancient vines, on perfectly exposed terroir, which he instinctively knew would produce something exciting, albeit in small quantities. The stage was set for the arrival of Pingus – a trailblazer amazed the world from day one. Flor de Pingus, from younger vines and separate parcels followed, then Psi, Peter’s philanthropic project aimed at retaining the region’s unique old vines.

CAVES JOAN SARDÀ

The Joan Sardà winery is located in the village of Castellví de la Marca, in the lush rolling hills of the Alt Penedès region, in Catalonia, Spain’s north-eastern corner. Local farmer, Tomàs Sardà Comellas, founded the winery in 1927, when he made the brave decision to leave the local cooperative system and set up on his own. The altitude of the vineyards, in combination with breezes off the nearby Mediterranean sea, provide a large swing between daytime and nightime temperatures. These conditions allow the grapes to ripen fully, while retaining the all-important acidity needed to make great sparkling wine.

BODEGAS ZUGOBER

Bodegas Zugober is a small-scale, family winery founded in 1987 by viticulturist Eduardo Gomez Palma and winemaker Maribel Bernardo. Located in the prized Rioja Alavesa region, their excellent, southfacing vineyard sites are sheltered from the cool winds of the Sierra de Cantabria, helping produce grapes of great character and finesse. Tempranillo is king here. Gentle handling and careful barrel-ageing deliver classically structured wines, combining fresh cherry-plum fruit characters with mineral freshness.

Adegas Galegas (‘the Galician winery’ in English) is located in the verdant north-west of Spain. The winery sits in a beautiful landscape, nestled in an amphitheatre of vines overlooking the river Miño on the Portuguese border. The winery was founded in 1995 by Pepe Rodriguez, a wellknown viticultural expert and winemaker, known in wine circles as the ‘Father of modern Albariño’, the region’s signature grape variety. Rodriguez’ efforts to resurrect and champion local grape varieties have seen the region’s wines soar in quality and reputation, and international success has followed: these days the Albariños of the Rías Baixas DO (the region’s main appellation) can be found in wine shops and restaurants all over the world. Stylistically, the wines reflect their land, a tidal Atlantic territory with mercurial weather more akin perhaps to Cornwall or Brittany, an ongoing play of sea frets and intense sunshine. The wines are highly refreshing and gastronomic, combining vivid fruit with fresh, harmonious acids and a subtle mineral core. Serôdio Borges combined prodigious talent and enthusiasm to produce iconic wines from the outset. They initially bought a wonderful, old port lodge and rebuilt the lagares (stone troughs). At first they purchased fruit from selected sites in the Pinhão Valley then, in 2003, bought their own, spectacular vineyard, planted with ancient, 76-year-old vines, encompassing thirty different varieties. The wines, red and white, combine impressive complexity, intensity and personality are delightfully food-friendly and have attracted wonderful third party accolades.

A pioneering project launched in 2005 by Johnny R. Saadé, joined by his sons Sandro and Karim. They had always dreamt of creating their own wine estate, and initially started looking in Bordeaux. However, the family were drawn back to their Levantine roots, and eventually came back to Lebanon, where they finally identified an area of land from which they created Château Marsyas. Located in the southern part of the Beqaa Valley, this was virgin land in one of the world’s most ancient wine-producing regions. Drawing on classic noble varieties, and farming sustainably, the family aims to create wines that champion their exceptional terroir.

THE LANE

One of the most exciting wine estates in Australia today, The Lane Vineyard create wines that champion the sunny exuberance of Aussie fruit, with a nod to the refined structure and texture typical of old-world classics. With vineyards planted high in the Adelaide Hills, the relatively cool climate and ancient soils are key to the style of the estate’s wines, which walk the tightrope of brightness and grace.

FRASER GALLOP

Established in 1999 by Nigel Gallop and Heather Fraser, Fraser Gallop is located in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, 6 km from the South West coast of Western Australia. Planted without irrigation, their vines have been challenged to find their own water, deep in the subsoil layers. This has created vines that produce smaller berries with heightened flavour intensity and a ‘slate-like’ minerality. Winemaker Clive Otto has been with the estate since its inception and oversaw the design and construction of its state-of-the-art winery. His philosophy is to allow the fruit to speak for itself, striving to create wines showcasing balance and finesse on release, with the structure and pedigree to thrive with careful cellaring.

Trent Burge is Barossa Boy, the sixth generation of the famous Barossa winemaking clan. From backyard to vineyard and cricket pitch, Trent grew up a country boy, tearing about the local vineyards on his bike. Sourcing grapes of the highest quality from specific sites, he crafts wines to be classically Barossa in structure and flavour profile, but with a lightness of touch that is resolutely modern.

Boutique, family-owned Marlborough estate Eradus Wines have twelve hectares of vineyards, the most impressive of which are planted on undulating terraces along the Awatere river valley. Closer to the ocean than much of the Marlborough wine region, the Awatere’s warm days, cool nights and dry climate are key to the luminous flavour intensity, elegant minerality and fresh acidities of Eradus’ distinctive wines. The estate is run by Michiel Eradus, whose affable, easygoing demeanour belies a fierce perfectionist in pursuit of quality and balance, the Eradus mantra.

A leading light of the Hawke’s Bay wine scene, Elephant Hill was born in 2003, and boasts exceptional vineyards in three distinct sub-regions, as well as a smart winery. The wine styles reflect the team’s passion for traditional French regions and their varietals: Burgundian-style chardonnay and peppery, perfumed syrah in the mould of the Northern Rhône. And there is more than a nod to Bordeaux in ‘Sea’ Sauvignon Blanc and icon red blend ‘Hieronymus’. Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine region, first planted in the late 1600s when Simon van der Stel first saw the viticultural potential of this sheltered valley, nestled beneath the mighty Table Mountain, and tempered by Atlantic breezes. Constantia Uitsig is a stunning estate, thriving under owners devoted to sustainability and conservation. They are restoring their land to its indigenous state, where local ‘fynbos’ can grow uninhibited, a haven for flora and fauna alike. The 17 hectares of vineyards, planted on the Cape’s characteristic decomposed granite and sandstone soils, are farmed organically, promoting biodiversity. Set in this landscape like a glittering jewel is the spectacular new winery - a futuristic glass structure ‘where art meets science and chemistry’, to paraphrase Head Winemaker Daniel Keulder. Passionate about Constantia, Daniel’s aim is to create wines true to its unique terroir. Drawing on modern and traditional techniques, his wines are finely wrought, with the emphasis on freshness and purity of fruit.

JOOSTENBERG ESTATE

Joostenberg is a small, family-owned and run wine farm, in Muldersvlei on the border of Paarl and Stellenbosch. First established by a Swedish settler in the late 1600s, the farm was bought in 1879 by the Myburgh family, who have been here ever since. Vines thrive here in the Mediterranean climate, tempered by breezes from the ocean, just 30km away. In 1999, after several decades when the estate sold its grapes to a local cooperative, 5th generation brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh reprised Joostenberg’s long winemaking tradition. Their aim was to create wines with individuality and a sense of place, made as naturally as possible, with respect for the environment. To this end, the estate was converted to organic methods (certified 2012) and remains one of the few fully certified organic estates in South Africa. The 30 hectares of vineyards are managed meticulously, many are dryfarmed, and yields are low. Among the mix of high quality varietals, Chenin Blanc and Syrah have a particular affinity for the estate’s distinctive soils, a mix of decomposed granite and Malmesbury shale.

NELSON ESTATE

Nelson Estate’s beautiful wines are now attracting deserved attention worldwide, but the roots of their story lie in Alan Nelson’s childhood dream of owning a wine farm. For years Alan ran a successful legal practice in Cape Town, enabling him to buy an historic property in Paarl, which he renamed Nelson Estate. Here, complex granite clay soils and cooling Atlantic breezes help promote fresh and delicate flavours in the wines. Alan’s daughter Lisha is now at the helm. One of Stellenbosch University’s star alumni and an acclaimed talent of the South African winemaking scene, Lisha has also been awarded the accolade of Cape Wine Master, the highest honour in South Africa’s wine industry.

MONT DU TOIT

A highly-respected lawyer, since 1996 Stephan du Toit has also run the family estate Mont du Toit, created by his French Huguneot ancestors when they arrived in the Western Cape over 300 years ago. The estate enjoys ideal growing conditions for premium red grapes, the warm Mediterranean conditions cooled by breezes from the nearby Hawequa mountain. Mont du Toit is run by a team of local workers, trained and mentored by Stephan in all aspects of viticulture and winemaking. They follow traditional methods, tending the vines by hand, and keeping yields low. The Mont du Toit style is inspired by Bordeaux in fruit and structure, the blend of cultivars varying from year to year depending on specific vintage conditions.

CAKEBREAD CELLARS

Cakebread Cellars started as a small venture whose first vintage totalled just 157 cases and now comprises over 600 acres of prime vineyards. The breadth and depth of scope of Cakebread’s sites are key not only to the balance and complexity of their wines but also their potential to age gracefully. While viticultural and winemaking expertise has become more sophisticated with time, Cakebread remain constant in their commitment to family values, and to producing wines of the highest quality, to be enjoyed with friends and food.

HYDE DE VILLAINE

The creation of Hyde de Villaine saw a combined viticultural history, spanning some 400 years, come to fruition after a lot of coaxing. What seemed logical the world over was resisted under the premiss that it would perhaps muddy the waters between two viticultural reputations at the highest level. Finally persuaded, the joint venture between Burgundy’s Aubert de Villaine and Californian viticulturalist Larry Hyde, as many suspected, resulted in extraordinary wines – in what way? The HdV wines combine a degree of the finesse, elegance and refinement, which most of us would associate with European wines, a classical trait, with a balance of richness and vitality afforded by the relatively cool, windy climate of the Carneros region.

Monterey County is well known for its glorious sandy beaches, cliff-hugging Highway 1, and pictureperfect seaside towns like Carmel. It is also home to some of California’s most exciting wines. Monterey’s combination of ocean mists, marine breezes, cool hillside sites and range of wine-friendly soils has become a mecca for winemakers in pursuit of finesse and minerality. At Carmel Road, Winemaker Kris Kato produces world-class wines that capture the true personality of their vineyards, offering up bright Californian fruit with ‘old world’ elegance.

DOMINUS ESTATE

In the late 1960s, while studying at the university of California at Davis, Christian Moueix, best known for iconic wines from Bordeaux’ Right Bank, fell in love with California’s Napa Valley. In 1981, he discovered this vineyard, which had provided fruit for some of the finest Napa wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1995, became sole owner. His goal, to produce great wine representing a unique terroir, is totally endorsed by his son Édouard. The vines are somewhat cosseted as the overriding philosophy at Dominus which is to “produce the wine in the vineyard, not in the cellar” –fabulous classical style wines.

SUSTAINABILITY

We strive to ensure that all our activities comply fully with relevant environmental legislation, aiming for continual improvement and best practice in terms of environmental management procedures. These are outlined below.

• Wine Buying Approach – Environmental policy and sustainability are key considerations of our buying policy. It is important to note that we have been working with the large majority of our key suppliers for many years and have built-up trusted relationships with them over this time. Quality, responsibility and common sense drive the relationships we have with our suppliers, the vast majority of whom demonstrate a clear commitment to sustainable agriculture in different ways, related to their origins, local practices and possibilities. Approaches include Organic and Biodynamic practices, ‘Reasoned Viticulture’ (derived from France’s Lutte Raisonée, avoiding systemic treatments but reserving the right to treat if absolutely necessary) and country or region-specific initiatives such as the Sustainability Code of the Chilean Wine Industry, France’s recently established ‘Haute Valeur Environnementale” (HVE), Napa Green in California, South Africa’s integrated Production of Wine (IPW) Scheme and the Sustainable Winegrowing of New Zealand programme. Such initiatives follow the principles of international wine industry environmental and sustainability policies, drawn up by global organisations such as the International Federation of Wine and Spirits (FIVS) and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). We encourage and support all efforts taken by our producers in this regard, and ask for evidence of certification where relevant.

• Supply Chain Management - The Company, wherever possible, seeks to appoint suppliers of works and materials who are environmentally aware and share our desire to reduce environmental impact. We will communicate our environmental concerns if and when they arise, and we will request information from suppliers in order to monitor capabilities and progress in achieving best possible standards. To assist us in monitoring progress, we will invite suppliers and producers to complete a self-assessment questionnaire that covers the four pillars of Labour Standards, Health and Safety, the Environment and Business Ethics

• We recognise the management of environmental impacts as a global priority and are complying with relevant environmental legislation, such as the UK Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (“SECR”) scheme, as a means to improve transparency and auditability of emissions. We qualify for the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (“ESOS”), and we will be working towards phase 3, with the support of an expert sustainability team, who will also commence work with us to plan a more sustainable future; a future where authentic, ambitious but realistic targets and sustainability goals drive positive change, verifiable by annual certification.

VIÑA LAURENT

Viña Laurent is a small, boutique wine venture owned and run by French-Chilean winemaking couple Damien and Lorena Laurent. After twelve years in Bordeaux looking after Damien’s family estate, the couple decided to return to Chile to set up their own wine venture. They settled in the Maipo Valley, where they own just over two hectares of vineyards, tended meticulously. They have also developed relationships with a handful of small, independent growers in the southern Maule and Itata regions, from whom they source special parcels - such as grapes from 150-year-old País vines! The Laurents use only the healthiest fruit and minimise handling, to preserve natural freshness and fruit purity.

MATURANA WINES

Like many others, José Ignacio and brother Sebastian Maturana saw their family home and vineyards destroyed by Chile’s major earthquake in 2010. Forced to rebuild their business, they faced a huge decision: continue selling their grapes to Chile’s major brand-owners? Or, go it alone. Tabula rasa, they decided to make wines of their own, at a more premium level. In 2011, winemaker José travelled to Burgundy, to understand from within the approaches followed by small producers to make high-end wines. Back in Chile, he and Sebastian founded Maturana Wines, with a vision: to create wines with a sense of place, honouring Chile’s viticultural and winemaking heritage. They work with old vines (70 years old minimum!) tended organically according to time-honoured viticultural practices, while drawing on ancestral winemaking techniques, like skin contact for white grapes (‘orange wines’) and fermentation in amphorae.

JOSÉ IGNACIO MATURANAFOUNDER AND WINEMAKER

VIÑA ARBOLEDA

Viña Arboleda is the personal venture of Eduardo Chadwick, a name well-known to lovers of Chilean wine. Arboleda means ‘grove of trees’ and is a tribute to more than 3,500 acres of native forest that surround the estate’s vineyards in the beautiful Aconcagua Valley, north of Santiago. Chadwick’s vision at Arboleda is to create single vineyard wines revealing the purest expression of each unique terroir and grape variety. Elegance is the watchword here, borne of the Aconcagua Valley’s diverse sites and the influences of cool mountain air and tempering breezes from the nearby Pacific.

LA RONCIÈRE, IDAHUE ESTATE

La Roncière was founded in 1949, but only much later in 2017 did the brothers – José Antonio, Andres and Alejandro Orueta – conceive of Idahue Estate. This pioneering project, undertaken in awareness of climate change, was extraordinary in its ambition and execution, involving the creation of an entire estate from scrub in the remote area of Licantén, a cool, coastal sub-region of the Curicó Valley. Due to its unique microclimate and ancient metamorphic soil, Licantén has been formally recognised as a new D.O, one of only four in Chile. Its 200 hectares of vines yield fresh, beautifully-structured, high quality reds from classic French varieties.

VIÑA NAHUEL

Viña Nahuel, named after the native Andean puma, is a personal venture for Swiss-born Daniel Wiederkehr, a former financier who had always dreamed of making his own wines. In 2010, Daniel fell in love with Chile, buying six hectares in the Colchagua Valley to set up his estate, where he farms 80-year-old bush vines following organic and biodynamic methods. Wiederkehr’s wines combine European classicism borne of his Swiss oenological training, with the Chilean character of his newly adopted homeland.

MENDOZA VINEYARDS

Founded in 2003 by an ambitious and dynamic international team, Mendoza Vineyards is an exciting project based in Luján de Cuyo, the heart of Mendoza’s wine country. Mendoza Vineyards owns its own vineyards but has also developed close relationships with a number of local qualityminded vinegrowers, to supply them longer term. This provides access to grapes from a wide variety of sites, giving grapes with different and distinctive qualities. Meticulous in every aspect of their operation, the small team, led by chief winemaker Richard Bonvin (a name with a destiny!), produces wines with impressive regional typicity and varietal purity. The best alternative to a trip to Mendoza!

VIÑAS QUEIROLO

The Queirolo family emigrated from Genoa, Italy to Peru in 1877. Soon after, Santiago Queirolo opened the now legendary Queirolo Tavern in Lima, and started making everyday wine as well as pisco (these days the leading brand in Peru). Fast forward to 2000, a new generation of Queirolos sought to refocus the family wine operation, and hired topnotch French consultants to advise. This led them to acquire land in the Ica Valley, a desert oasis a few hours south of Lima. 60km from the Pacific, the so-called ‘Valley of the Sun’ boasts year-round sunshine, a remarkable diurnal temperature range, and tempering ocean influences ideal for viticulture. In an engineering project of extraordinary ambition (some might say madness!), the Queirolos drove high into the hills, creating vineyards from nothing on vertiginious virgin slopes of ancient rock, which they planted with high-quality vines from a leading French nursery. Meanwhile the winery was revamped with state-of-the-art kit. The winemaking team, led by Argentinean talent Luis Gomez, is helping shape the style of Peruvian wine, founded in freshness, varietal purity and a discreet old world structure. One to follow!
