Corney & Barrow Own Label brochure

Page 1

“Happily, I knew we were in safe hands the minute I saw the list and twigged that all the wine… had been supplied by Corney & Barrow, titan of the British wine trade, still privately owned and going stronger than ever after 235 years in the business.” Jonathan Ray, The Spectator

THE CORNEY & BARROW LABELS

THE CORNEY & BARROW OWN LABELS (House wine but not as you know it) “From a Margaux produced by the highly renowned family-owned négociant house of Sichel, to a Sauternes sourced from a Premier Cru property...” Everybody needs a Corney & Barrow Own Label wine. This isn’t hooch pumped in vast volumes from some petro tanker but rather a specially selected range made exclusively for (and in some cases by) us to provide you with proper drinking pleasure – every day of the week. For the most part, these are low volume, specialist, vintage wines in which the background – production, grape variety etc. - is clearly and proudly stated on the label. We do not want the wines to taste the same each year, we want you to revel in the variety of each new vintage. We have re-skilled rather than deskilled the whole concept of ‘own label’. We aim for absolute value – that perfect balance between price and quality. We rather rely on you to prove us right.

“This interesting mix of Colombard and Ugni Blanc (aka Trebbiano) grapes from Gascony has an uplifting aroma, with floral and citrus character. Refreshing and versatile, it has a dry, tangy finish and is only 10.5% alcohol.” Will Lyons, The Sunday Times

Our top-selling white for the past 20 years, this comes from the deep South West of France. Depth and concentration from warm days and crispness from cool nights, refreshed by breezes from the Pyrénées. Our buyer Rebecca Palmer visits the region every winter to blend our new vintage, using a kaleidoscopic palette of over 30 components.

Rebecca Palmer, Buyer

Understated style from organic family estate Château Grinou, partners of C&B for many years. Based in the heart of the Bergerac* region, just an hour’s drive inland from Bordeaux, the Cuisset family reprise the classic white SauvignonSémillon blend of their more illustrious neighbour. The rolling hills of the local landscape, somehow reflect in the wine itself with its gentle lemon-honey appeal and soft curves. (*Though the wine itself is classified as IGP Perigord, due to a technicality of French wine law – heavens, surely not!)

“This is the white Burgundy for those who don’t have the big bucks but want to see what all the fuss is about.” Adrian Smith, The Independent

A home without white Burgundy is a mere house… Affordable burgundy is a dying breed, but that is exactly what Maison Auvigue, partners of C&B for many years, have achieved for us in the Mâconnais. This is a subtle, yet precise wine, with gentle curves in just the right places. It offers mild orchard fruit, with just enough creamy density and the merest touch of earthy minerals to give complexity and textural richness.

“Our C&B Rosé is an instant delight – the perfect accompaniment to a warm summer’s evening, entertaining friends.” Thibaut Mathieu, Managing Director, Asia

It is all too easy to pour a second glass of this delicious and utterly drinkable rosé, new to our range this year! Like Corney & Barrow Blanc it comes from our long-standing partners Producteurs Plaimont in Gascony, and was blended by Plaimont’s winemaker Christine Cabri with our buyer Rebecca Palmer. Laced with delicate rose-petal scent, this vivacious wine brims with summer berries and crème fraîche flavours, underpinned by thirst-quenching acidities. Refreshing and uplifting in equal measure, a rosé for every day of the week.

“This would be the perfect bistro house red: your nose starts twitching for bavette-frites at the first juicy, upbeat sip. Lovely.” Victoria Moore, The Telegraph

A distillation of all that is joyful in southern France, this wine comes from sandyclay soils next to the Canal du Midi. It is a blend of old vine Carignan with a dash of warm hearted Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Grown in the heart of the Minervois area, with grapes sourced from a multitude of local vignerons. Drinkability is the key here – supple red berry fruit that will call you back for another glass.

“It shows that Bordeaux can produce refreshingly good value claret, with great character, when you know where to look…” Paul Marus, Bordeaux Buyer

A pillar of the community and a stalwart of this range, blended annually by our buyers in the historic tasting room of Maison Sichel, on Bordeaux’s Quai de Bacalan. The building blocks are traditional – Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and in 2016, Malbec. Blending as a group ensures overall satisfaction, as well as being a highly efficient team bonding exercise. Benchmark everyday claret; a serious wine with equally serious structure.

Fine wines from Bordeaux that won’t break la banque. “This wine is much better than you might expect from a standard “club” claret: it’s fragrant and fresh on the nose, a characteristic of the 2015 vintage and there’s good precision on the palate.” Country Life

Corney & Barrow Company Reserve Claret has a straightforward brief. It is a limited production run of vintage Bordeaux that can equally be drunk immediately or kept for 2 – 4 years as desired. Merlot dominant, it is supple, ripe, rounded and silky, enriched by toasted oak. We believe this combination of ingredients is necessary for you to fall in love with Bordeaux for the first time – and all over again.

“A delicious portrayal of ‘Rhône in a bottle’, from innovative family winemakers, made exclusively for Corney & Barrow.” Will Hargrove, Head of Fine Wine

Made for us by renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer Guillaume Gonnet, our Côtes du Rhône is effectively a junior Châteauneuf. It is the fruit of old vines and galets roulés, the region’s famous pudding stones which reflect the sun’s heat back up at the vines. The key components are spicy Syrah and warmhearted Grenache.

“Bodegas Zugober makes beautiful Rioja and this velvety, oak-aged Crianza bursts with rich, herby, spiced red plum fruit.” Jane MacQuitty, The Times

Bodegas Zugober is a small family-owned winery in the heart of the prized ‘Alavesa’ sub-zone of Rioja. Limestone soils here are the key to the wine’s marked finesse, as are the slightly cooler night time temperatures. Classified as a Crianza, due to its additional ageing in barrel and bottle, this is unmistakably Rioja; spicy, melded and complex.

“This 2016 vintage once again ‘does what it says on the tin’ – textbook Margaux charm and elegance, perfumed with seemingly effortless grace, through to a balanced, gentle finish.” Alison Buchanan, Associate Director & Buyer

The most feminine, the most charming, the iron fist in the velvet glove – it is tempting to wallow in cliché when talking about Margaux. But, behind all legends there is some fact and this wine, blended by Corney & Barrow in the tasting room of the négociant house of Sichel has the X-factor in spades. A dark rocky mineral core, above which billows a velvety, violet perfume. It is not a coincidence that we sold out of our first shipment in a month.

“A soft, refined Merlot based wine – a stunning example of why Saint-Émilion has been so popular for centuries. Perfect with the Sunday roast!” James Franklin, Head of Merchant Sales

With an accessible, food-friendly style, this has elegance, grace and richness – a fine ambassador for both the vintage and the appellation. This is sourced from a Grand Cru property, bordering the Pomerol border, ideally suiting the Corney & Barrow preferred style. It provides exemplary opulence, a plethora of cherries and berries, underpinned by refined minerals.

“It smashed the competition out of the park. Complexity, richness and refreshment rarely come in a package that’s so invigorating and enticing.” Olly Smith, The Mail On Sunday

You might think the current surge of Prosecco makes our own label fizz a tough sell. Not a bit of it – this gains in popularity every year. It is a ‘proper’ méthode traditionelle sparkling wine, the secondary fermentation (in which the bubbles are born) taking place in bottle rather than tank. This gives finer, more persistent bubbles, and some of the toastiness of Champagne. In fact, serve it blind and many a guest would take it to be just that.

“A delightful and classic Sauternes. Not too heavy on the palate, the juiciness of citrus cuts the richer, sweeter flavours and texture, to give this lovely presence, and clean, fresh finish.” Tom Cannavan, Wine-Pages.Com

Here we have a glass of liquid gold – anonymous when we first tasted – yet from a property of considerable renown, which we have always admired. It is now proudly emblazoned with the Corney & Barrow Sauternes label – a joy – and excellent value for money. There ought always to be a bottle or two stashed in the fridge.

“Is this for C&B’s shooting party customers? Serious, correct, tea-leaf flavours. Proper ruby port. Not too sweet with real structure to it. Really fun. Lots of character.” Jancis Robinson, Wine Critic, Journalist & Author

Nothing says quality like ruby port… Ahem, perhaps not always the case, but this is so good we just couldn’t pass it over. This is made for us by the Van Zeller family. Sweet and gently spiced, we have here an ideal ambassador for the coming port renaissance! Try it as an aperitif, as the French do, or with light cheeses at the end of a meal.

“Aged Tawny port is remarkably accessible, with no need for fiddly decanting. Whether as an aperitif or a post prandial treat, when served slightly chilled, it is quite delicious.” Bryce Fraser, Managing Director, Scotland

A blend of wines aged for an average of 20 years, in small wooden vats. The gradual exposure to oxygen is responsible for the tawny colour and the nutty, dried fruit aromas. Serve chilled with nuts as an aperitif. Savour with cheese or with chocolate desserts - no need to wait until next Christmas!

“Splash out on C&B’s splendid sloe gin, with masses of cockle-warming spiced plum and cherry kernel fruit.” Jane MacQuitty, The Times

Idiosyncratically British, yet wonderfully simple. Sloes from Yorkshire, gin from London. Add sugar, stir a little over a few months, then bottle it. Made for us by hardy Yorkshiremen the Curtoys brothers, sloe-rearing specialists. Drink neat or over ice or top up with C&B Sparkling for a Kir Royale! Blind tasted and tested by our MD, Adam Brett-Smith and the people who really matter on shoots – the beaters – and pronounced the best. You decide!
