Jay Birmingham Catch up with Jay 2019 has been such a whirlwind year for me so far and I am so grateful that Cornfield have stayed with me every step of the way on this amazing journey. Throughout September I have had the honour of working with some of the biggest names in the nation at the moment as I worked with the gorgeous Molly-Mae and Maura from the 2019 Love Island cast. Molly-Mae recently launched a stunning clothing line with Pretty Little Thing and I had the honour of working with her to get her signature waves looking incredible for her big night. Top tip – to create Molly-Mae’s style at home you need the Color WOW Dream Coat as it prepares your hair perfectly for this look. I have also worked with the hilarious and talented Maura a couple of times too and she is such a pleasure to be around! As well as my gorgeous reality star clients, I have also had the chance to work with a Victoria’s Secret Model, Nadine Leopold. Her ‘cool girl’ waves are best created using the Hot Tools Pro Curl Bar. In addition to this I have also been busy working on my Jay Birmingham hair salon and I am delighted to announce that I am expanding! My brandnew salon will still be in the heart of Birmingham but at the moment I can’t give away any more than that – my lips are sealed! I am looking for incredible, talented stylists to join my team however, and I would love to hear from you if this is something you are interested in. Please contact me via email with your CV; info@jaybirmingham.co.uk.

As we move into the winter season (which I love!), hair trends are changing and there are a few things I have noticed that will be big this season. The first is the return of the stretched root which is great news if you like a low maintenance look. Keep the ends of your hair light and add some darker depth to your roots. For styling, keep it minimal. We are seeing lots of relaxed waves and soft, straight looks that are really natural. Remember to keep your hair hydrated during the colder months too!

Feel good in Fall
Formalwear
with Albie & Lonnie’s
The weather may have changed, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to look dapper. In the fashion world, autumn means new collections and new looks. At Albie & Lonnie’s we love autumn - it’s the season of gentlemen, full of deep colours, chunky material and tweeds. After opening our new, bigger fl gship store on Albert Street, Rugby, in September, we’ve been filling our rails with all sorts of new designers and suits, as well as the classics that our customers love. A highlight for us is our Fratelli Rust three-piece suit - perfect for any autumn occasions, whether it be a wedding, smart dinner, or grand day out. And then there’s our Ellis Tweed suit. Does it get any more dapper than that? These are just some of the great quality formalwear we’re stocking to make sure all our gents are the best dressed around, no matter what the weather. As the seasons change, most of us look to refresh our wardrobe. Fashions change, our own look changes, and in the British autumn and winter we’re often looking for something a little bit warmer. Don’t worry, we’re ready to help. Our new store also stocks a great range of menswear, from jeans and t-shirts to jumpers and jackets. Founder Dave Hall says: “People love sporting a suit in the bright sunshine of summer, but weddings and special occasions don’t stop when the sun disappears. We want our customers to look and feel great in autumn and winter as well as summer - even if the weather isn’t quite as kind. Our autumn collection has some great pieces in it that really fit with our idea of the true gent. From traditional tweed to darker colours, we’ve got something for everyone so they can feel dapper all year round.”

Henley Lash House Eyelash Extension Specialists Anna Cornfield owner of Henley Lash House, has been in the beauty industry for 15 years and has perfected her lash treatment technique over the last five years. Specialising in Russian Volume eyelash extensions, Anna is an expert technician in semi-permanent lashes, achieving fantastic results for all clients. What are Russian Volume lashes? Designed to give the ‘wow-factor’, Russian Volume lashes are applied to match the natural curvature of the eyelid. Their ultra-fine lightweight design allows technicians to apply multiple synthetic extensions to each natural lash, creating more volume than classic lashes and often lasting longer. How are they applied? Anna carefully applies individual extension fibres to a single natural eyelash, building up both volume and length in the process. Depending upon her clients’ desired outcome, Anna can apply two to eight extensions on a single natural lash. The Russian Volume lashes are applied in a ‘fan-like’ shape, giving an eye-catching, impactful look. Are Russian Volume lashes safe? It’s important to book a specialist technician for all eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions can only damage your natural lashes if applied incorrectly. Untrained, amateur technicians may not have the skills and equipment to correctly isolate individual natural lashes and safely apply extensions. When it comes to your beauty and health, always go professional. Anna guarantees all clients are given aftercare advice and receive patch tests before any appointments take place.

Professional Makeup Artist, Naomi Halliday, shares her favourite products to leave you looking (and feeling) scrumptious this autumn. Autumn is here and it’s time to embrace the colder weather, chunky knits and overhaul your makeup bag with some Autumnal tones! Think earthy browns, warm berry tones and rich, deep reds. Here are Naomi Halliday’s top recommendations for products that will bring you straight up to date with the coming season!
As the weather gets colder, you may need to swap your usual foundation for a more hydrating formula such as Kevyn Aucoin The Foundation Balm, £42.00 (cultbeauty.com). Paired with a custom brush for easy application and buffing the balm blurs imperfections and blends seamlessly into the skin, whilst the infusion of hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and avocado oil keep the skin nourished.
For a luxurious, deep red, try Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Extreme Intense Matte Lip Colour in ‘116 Extreme’ £31.00 (Johnlewis.com). This formula delivers an ultra-matte finish with intense colour and the addition of Matcha Green Tea Butter Extract, Sweet Almond Oil, Sappan Wood and Vitamin E helps to protect lips from external aggressors.
For a beautiful warm glow, apply Daniel Sandler Water Colour Liquid Blush in ‘Gentle’, £16.50 (danielsandler.com). The awardwinning formula is light-weight so you can build up the colour depending on the look you want to create, without weighing the skin down. It’s available in a vast range of colours and the good news is you can order cute little sample pots for just £2.75 each if you’re not sure which colour to go for!
With its mixture of matte, metallic and sparkling shades and a spectrum of gorgeous autumnal tones ranging from amber and bronze, to burgundy and taupe, Bobbi Brown Infra-Red Eyeshadow Palette, £36.50 (johnlewis.com) is the perfect palette to take you into the Autumn season.
For a pop of winter berry colour, try NYX Slip Tease Full Color Lip Laquer in ‘Karma Suit Ya’£7.00 (nyxcosmetics. co.uk). This luxurious lip colour delivers full coverage and a gorgeous glossy finish
For a warm, spicy brown, try Huda Beauty Throwback Collection Power Bullet Matte Lipstick in ‘Game Night’, £22.00 (Selfridges.com). The formula is enriched with sweet almond oil, so it glides across your lips with the ease and softness of a balm, making it perfect for the colder months.

Repose
Refl xology “Your feet don’t forget. They can reveal all sorts about your medical history, from illnesses or injuries you may have had down to digestive issues or stress. Every foot tells a different story and it’s amazing how detailed that story can be.” For Hayley Cleaver MAR, founder of Repose Reflexolo y, that’s where the beauty of reflexolo y lies. But despite its growing popularity as a complementary therapy across Europe, for plenty of people reflexolo y is a great unknown. Hayley has been a fan of reflexolo y for two decades, using it to treat her own digestive issues as well as hormone imbalances. She is so passionate about the therapy she has retrained as a qualified reflexolo ist to pass on the same benefits to other people, Based near Rugby, Warwickshire, Repose Reflexolo y offers foot and hand reflexolo y sessions to clients in a relaxing environment as well as mobile therapy to clients in and around Rugby and the surrounding area in the comfort of their own homes. “I genuinely believe reflexolo y is a fantastic therapy and can make huge differences to people’s lives,” says Hayley. “Whether someone is suffering from aches and pains, digestive issues, hormone-related problems, stress and anxiety and more, it can have a huge positive impact. I’ve felt the benefits myself and I’ve also had great results from clients who come back for repeat treatments.” The biggest problem is that so many people still don’t really know what reflexolo y is, says Hayley. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, the idea behind reflexolo y was introduced to the west in the early 1900s by Dr William Fitzgerald who developed ‘Zone therapy’, believing that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body. That theory was developed further in the 1930s into what is now known as reflexolo y. The therapy is based on the theory that all systems and organs in the body are reflected in areas of the feet and hands. By working on those reflected areas, a reflexolo ist essentially tries to identify any issues or blockages and help them dissipate or move, therefore alleviating those symptoms elsewhere in the body. A treatment at Repose Reflexolo y starts with a full consultation with Hayley, including medical history before she then gets to work on your feet. If you have a specific issue in mind, Hayley can target that but will also go through each zone of the foot, corresponding to an area of the body, to help remove any crystals or blockages and release blood flow and energy around the body, allowing it to heal itself. “I don’t diagnose people,” she adds. “That’s not what reflexolo y is about, but often if a client feels discomfort or awareness of the pressure in a certain area, that will correspond to other problems they’ve had elsewhere in the body.” Another key benefit of the treatment is the relaxation element. While Hayley often explains each step of what she’s doing, some clients prefer silence while they enjoy the relaxing side of a reflexolo y treatment. “It’s so rare for people to allow themselves a guilt-free hour out of their daily lives to just focus on themselves, so many also get a huge benefit from that opportunity to relax and focus on the reflexolo y experience. That said, it’s far more than just a foot massage, which some people think reflexolo y is.” While some may doubt the healing properties of reflexolo y, Hayley urges everyone to try the therapy at least once. “While some people may doubt whether it can heal them, we know that it definite y can’t harm you, so I believe everyone should have reflexolo y at least once in their life. Trying it can’t do any harm, but so many people have found that it can help with problems they have been living with for years, so what’s to lose. The biggest problem is that so many people have never tried, or don’t know much about it, so all I ask is that they experience it once.”
Review on Repose Reflexolo y I’ll confess to being a bit nervous about the prospect of having someone fiddle with my feet, but the idea of a treatment that helps my body heal itself was pretty appealing. Any nerves soon disappeared once I started my consultation with Hayley, who took my medical history before explaining a bit about the history of reflexolo y and the theory behind it. Lying back on the couch, I wondered if my feet would reveal anything about my overall health. Relaxing music on, Hayley started with a massage before working her way through the various zones of my feet, from the big toe - corresponding to the head and neck - down to parts of the sole correlating with areas like the pelvis. For each area she explained what she was doing and what she found, sometimes having to work at the ‘gritty’ elements representing an issue or blockage. I’ll confess to being surprised at being able to feel certain sensations when Hayley manipulated parts of my foot - either slight discomfort in my foot itself in certain areas representing other parts of my body where I’ve had the odd issue, or at one point feeling a bit hot when she treated a certain area. Apparently that’s completely normal and Hayley explained that people can have different reactions to reflexolo y, some feeling pain in certain areas representing illness or injury in another part of the body or others feeling a ‘fizzing’ At the end of the treatment I was given full aftercare instructions, including drinking lots of water and Hayley told me how I may feel the next day. Some people report feeling wonderful, while others initially feel slightly worse before feeling fantastic a day later. I left the treatment feeling relaxed and the next day felt absolutely fine For me, without any specific health issues I was aiming to treat, a huge benefit was the fact it was a truly relaxing experience, allowing me to take an hour out of my day and focus on doing something to help my body and mind relax and take time out. I’d certainly recommend anyone trying it, at least once, even if just for this. And who knows, you might experience other benefits like so many other people do.

Natty Buddha A Midlands football coach has launched a free meditation class to help people suffering from stress or anxiety. Nathan Feeley already runs Sheldon-based ‘Nath’s Netters’ - a club aimed at encouraging children into football by offering coaching in a safe environment with qualified A coaches. Following its success, Nathan is now planning a new initiative - a free meditation class aimed at hoping anyone suffering from stress, anxiety or just wants to start meditation. To make the classes self-sustaining, Nathan has designed a range of t-shirts dubbed ‘Natty Buddha’ that are going on sale, with all proceeds going towards any staff, venue or running cost. “The idea came to me as I love graffiti and I also meditate daily so I thought let’s try and make meditation more mainstream. We want to focus on the younger generation - they face huge stress from peer pressure to social media and meditation can really help them deal with everything that’s thrown at them. “To make it work we’ve put together some great t-shirt designs that we want to sell to help fund the classes. The aim is to get the t-shirts as far across the world as we can - at the moment the furthest is Dubai, but I’m aiming for Australia. Fingers crossed this will turn into a self-sustaining idea and we’ll be able to offer more and more of these free classes, which can bring great relief into people’s lives.” The next class will be held at True Fitness on 20th October. Nathan is also urging people to post pictures of themselves on Instagram or Facebook wearing their Natty Buddha t-shirt, tagging #nattybuddha to help spread the word. CHAKANA
If there was ever a cuisine having its ‘moment’ right now, it has to be Peruvian. Leading the South American charge is Robert Ortiz, former Head Chef at renowned contemporary Peruvian restaurant, Lima, in London’s Fitzrovia, and the man who has just opened Birmingham’s first Peruvian restaurant, Chakana, in the leafy suburb of Moseley. The restaurant takes its name from an ancient symbol used by indigenous Peruvian cultures, which was – and still is – often worn as a talisman, or featured in the architectural design of many buildings, temples, and artefacts such as the Condor Temple in Machu Picchu. The symbol encompasses the Incan belief that three worlds surround us: the upper world, the present and the underworld, and represents individuals living in harmony with each other and their surroundings, especially nature. Peruvian born Ortiz previously worked at the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone and the Four Seasons in Canary Wharf before taking up residency as Head Chef at Lima, where he was awarded a prestigious Michelin star in 2013. When mentioning Peru, Alpacas, panpipes and Paddington Bear likely come to mind, but Chakana plans to open customers minds – and taste buds – to the punchy, fresh fl vours of Peruvian food and drink. Peruvian food has an incredibly diverse history; along with its indigenous Spanish origins, the country boasts thriving Japanese and Chinese communities along with strong links to Europe and the influences of this can be seen in its cuisine Its melting pot of fl vours and cultures is down to centuries of extensive immigration from Asia, North America, Europe and Africa. Techniques and ingredients from across the globe are interwoven with Peru’s own, making it a truly natural fusion cuisine. Birmingham has seen something of a regeneration in the last five or six years when it comes to the culinary arts, and it now enjoys more Michelinstarred restaurants than any other city outside of London. Bloggers, critics and food connoisseurs have been flocking in their droves to Birmingham to sample the latest gastronomical offerings, with local heroes like Digbeth Dining Club - which celebrated its seventh anniversary this year – and independent eateries like Original Patty Men and Baked in Brick unlikely to slow down any time soon.
‘firsts’ including the first Odeon Cinema and the world’s first eggless custard powder, making the second city the ideal place for Ortiz’s first restaurant. Digbeth based interior designers, 2G, whose previous projects include Tap and Tandoor in Solihull and Nocturnal Animals, worked closely with Ortiz on the design of the restaurant which is inspired by traditional Peruvian textiles, architecture and the elements represented by the ancient Chakana symbol - the sun, wind, earth and water. The building that Ortiz has chosen to showcase his new project is the site of Birmingham’s last original Bank, and its position in historic Moseley means that Chakana will be in great company. Native Ingredients Peru’s natural landscape is incredibly diverse, providing it with a wide range of natural resources. The country has three main regions - coast, mountains and jungle - and each area has their own traditional dishes. Fish features prominently in the Peruvian diet and comes mainly in the form of Ceviche – raw fish cured in zingy citrus juices, coriander and onions. The elements of the dish may change from area to area, but the freshness of its ingredients is key. Quinoa has featured in traditional Peruvian cuisine for thousands of years as a staple carb, along with potatoes. Peru alone has over 3,000 varieties of potato – the super nutritious purple Amazonian variety being one of the most unusual. There is also Yacón, a type of Peruvian root vegetable, which is also beginning to show up on the foodie radar. After the success of Sweet Potato, now available in any supermarket or as fries at any burger joint you walk into today, Yacón has also made its way into UK soil. Similar in texture to a potato, or ripe pear, with an almost apple-like taste, the exotic tuber is doing the rounds on many London menus and it surely won’t be long before you can pick a couple up on your weekly food shop. Chakana also specialises in Pisco, a type of grape brandy produced in both Peru and Chile and developed by 16th century Spanish settlers, along with offering a vast wine and beer menu. www.chakana-restaurant.co.uk
Birmingham is well known for being a city of innovation and celebrating the unconventional. It also has a long history of being home to many

Billesley Manor
Hotel
So let’s talk about this incredible Manor hotel. Wherever you go away, there is an element of anticipation. Obviously, you want your experience to be a positive one. Ideally, you want it to be exactly what the brochure or website said it would be. In this case, we were not disappointed. The building itself is beautiful. In fact, it was one of the first things I noticed as we got close. It’s a very pretty building, and there’s a lot of character in it as well. It doesn’t just look like every old times Manor, there is a real sense of individuality here which is quite hard to ignore. The whole area is quite important from a historical perspective because it was a frequent sight of visits from William Shakespeare, a famous playwright. In fact, it is believed that he married Anne Hathaway here in the manor in the 1500s. If that’s not a testament to how long this place has stood, I don’t know what is. One can’t help but wonder if it was even more beautiful back then, although that’s quite hard to believe. So many will notice of the gardens here are stunning. Really, they’re beautiful. But let’s talk about the room itself. We, in a very unique way, rented a refurbished barn. Now, disregard any preconceptions you may have just formed because this was not like a barn from the 1500s. It was incredibly modern, with a large amount of space available and all the modern comforts you could want. But what I adored most about the room was the fact that in an attempt to adhere to the older visual aesthetic which was at work on the entire complex, they’d kept the roof beams visible. So consequently, you had this fantastic fusion of old and new, with modern comforts working alongside old stylistic choices such as keeping beams exposed. However, it was incredibly comfortable there, and we slept very well.

BY ORDER OF THE PEAKY BLINDERS: INTRODUCING BOURNE & CO’S NEW COCKTAIL MENU Nestled in the heart of the city, the independent cocktail café has created delicate drinks that perfectly embody the essence of each character. The explosive finale of Peaky Blinders hit our screens, concluding the ‘Peaky Blinders mania’ that has taken over the city during season five of the gritty gang drama. Birmingham’s very own prohibition hideaway, Bourne & Co, is making sure the Shelby legacy lives on beyond the BBC schedule by curating a brand-new cocktail menu inspired by the characters from the hit Brummie show. Something else I do want to draw attention to is the food. I was quite pleased to discover that the food was incredibly well presented, and it tasted as good as it looked. This was something of a relief because food tends to be the area that lets a lot of hotels down. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case here, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. To summarise, this manor hotel was definite y a good place to come and visit. I enjoyed all the elements that I saw, and there was no doubt in my mind that this had been lovingly restored and maintained over the years. There was a real character to the place which helped to make the entire trip much more special. Anyone can check in to a chain hotel, like a Premier Inn or something, but to go and find somewhere unique is a task in itself. You get a certain bespoke luxury and uniqueness which you don’t find anywhere else, and for some people it can be everything.

Bourne & Co, the award-winning 1920s inspired speakeasy, has crafted an all-new Peaky Blinders cocktail menu that carefully pairs premium ingredients that perfectly personify characters from the gang famous for its razor blade caps. It’s no secret that the Shelby family enjoyed a tipple or two, and what better what to celebrate the city’s most infamous family with an aptly themed drinks menu. From Matriarch Polly Grey to Tommy’s new alliance Jimmy McCavern, the drinks are fashioned from character traits, capturing the individuality of each character through trending ingredients though vintage twisted cocktails. The brains behind the brand-new peaky blinders inspired menu is Founder of Bourne & Co, Mikey Bourne, who comments: “The Peaky Blinders are synonymous with Birmingham and have grown into a cultural phenomenon around the world. It has really showcased the era that we are trying refashion right here in at the heart of the city.” Bourne & Co’s Peaky Blinders cocktail menu is available from today. FOOD & DRINK
Inside the
22
Some people think great cocktails, good coffee and fantastic service are the preserve of big cities. Often they’re right. But not always. Tucked in one of the most historic towns in the Midlands is a venue that offers all that - and more. Sitting opposite the historic Rugby School - birthplace of the game itself - in the heart of the market town of the same name is Inside the 22. A haven of great live music, cocktails, top-notch drinks and coffee. The brainchild of the same person behind nationally-renowned clothing brand CV22, quality is the watchword at Inside the 22. Cocktails are created in-house and made using only the best spirits and mixers, while the bar also stocks one of the more imaginative wine selections in the area and draught beers including Mahou, Angelo Poretti, Shed Head IPA and a selection of Belgian beers and craft cider. Spirits include Snow Leopard vodka, House of Suntory whisky and Deco 22 gin. Inside the 22 has established a reputation as a beacon of live music - championing local artists as well as attracting talent from further afield Its stage has welcomed names from All Saints to Hue & Cry with plenty of up-and-coming artists in between. The historic building also hosts comedy nights, private functions and more, as well as serving up sharing platters of food at weekends and special events for occasions like New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day. Daytime sees Inside the 22 become a thriving coffee bar, serving London-based Flying Horse Coffee with snacks sourced from local, artisan suppliers. From socialising to co-working, its role as the beating heart of the local community spans across day and night. As a next-door neighbour of the home of Rugby Football, the sport runs through the veins of Inside the 22. The Rugby World Cup has seen a celebratory programme of events, from live game showings to sake tastings, Japanese sword-skills, a menu of Japanese food from nearby local business Nana’s Japanese and a bespoke cocktail menu featuring Japanese-inspired cocktails dreamed up by Inside the 22’s team of mixologists. For founder Oli Taylor, Inside the 22’s journey is only just beginning. “In a relatively short time, we’ve already created somewhere really special for the people of Rugby and the nearby area. We want people who come here to feel like it’s home - somewhere they can enjoy a quality experience in great surroundings in the heart of an often unrecognised historic town in the Midlands. Watch this space - there’s more to come.” Inside the 22, 2 Lawrence Sheriff St, Rugby CV22 5EJ.

Chez Mal Chez Mal is a great place. In fact, I would go so far as to say it’s a wonderful place. There’s definite y a lot to enjoy here. We went because we’d heard good things, and I’m not lying when I say that it was possibly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had eating out. So, the huge selection of gin and cocktails notwithstanding, there was a lot to appreciate here. To begin with, we sampled Fougasse & Black aioli dip. It was absolutely delicious, and presented so well, which makes all the difference when it comes to overall satisfaction from the meal. However, we also recommend Thai sticky chicken lollipops. They have this really rich texture to them, which you think would be completely inappropriate, but it just just went perfectly with everything else. The Cumbrian Chicken Kiev was also a stunning choice. One of the things that I love most about this place wasn’t the food, and it wasn’t the drink, so much as both of those things working in tandem with the third secret weapon of the establishment. That would be the one and only Laszlo Lango. He actually joined the team back in February, but he’s already begun to prove himself as being an incredible force for gorgeous dishes and full commitment to what he does. He spent a very long time working in London, cooking meals in high-class hotels. Consequently, he knows a lot about the hospitality industry, because he’s been doing it for 12 years. That’s a pretty long time to me. His vision is to evolve the restaurant. To make it bigger and better than it was previously. And to that end, he is going to start managing 23 different people; giving out briefings helping with preparation of meals, and overseeing everything that goes on within his domain. You could tell that already he was beginning to exert his influence because we had a five star experience from start to finish I’ve never been quite so attentively and personally waited on before. I’s go so far as to say waiting on hand and foot, but it was better than that. It had that experience that you dream of having, but without any of the guilt that might come from that. In conclusion, I loved the experience. I thought it was fantastic to have such a careful level of attention paid to myself and my wife. It’s rare that two people can walk into a restaurant and be treated like they are the only guests in the entire facility, but in this case it felt like that. It was genuinely like we were the only customers that ever seen, and so they were absolutely determined to get it right, which is astounding when you consider that that was probably applied to everyone else as well. The food was fantastic, the service was incredible, and overall I think that this was perhaps one of my favourite experiences in quite some time. We’ve been to see a lot and do a lot, but this was something different. This was like high class service for ordinary people, and I loved it.

Cotswold House
Hotel and Spa
So when we wanted to get away from it all, we went to the Cotswold House Hotel and Spa. There is no doubt that this was an incredible place, and we came away feeling incredibly rejuvenated. What makes this such a good place? Well, there’s a lot of different reasons. It would be easy to say that this was just an all round great place. But there were quite a few things that stuck out to me as being particularly important. For example, the service was one of the first things that you notice. It’s really common these days for hotel and spa staff to be quite apathetic. They might offer you a warm welcome at first but once their paycheque doesn’t cover additional niceties, they tend to be a bit ambivalent to your needs. This really wasn’t the case here. The staff were incredibly attentive and respectful and polite from start to finish It was lovely to be part of, because we felt like we were quite important. The room that we booked was very big. In addition to being so spacious, it was also very clean and very bright, so it felt quite modern while at the same time keeping with the sort of bespoke old fashioned feel that the front of the house had. Of course, the facilities were also very top-notch. We visited the spa. Now, I’m not normally a spa person, because I find that the level of service you get tends to be lower than you like. However, in this instance that was not the case. All the facilities were clean and tidy, and the staff were particularly attentive. Very relaxing place, and I really enjoyed my time there. As the day wound to a close, we encountered what is traditionally a very crucial part of the holiday experience, the food. This is either hit or miss. The hotel either gets it really well done, or there is barely anything. The Fig. Restaurant was our destination of choice and it was lovely. Very relaxed, quite intimate, perfect for a nice meal. There was also quite a nice selection of gin, if I do say so myself.

COTSWOLD HOUSE HOTELAND SPA - REVIEW
|
So what did I think of the hotel? Well, to be honest, I had a lovely time. Everyone I spoke to agreed with me that this was a place which really puts emphasis on the customer experience. At no point did we just feel like another group of bodies filling rooms. Instead we were treated like people, and the staff were genuinely nice and approachable. If there had been an issue, I would’ve been very comfortable walking down to the front desk and trying to get it sorted. There was no awkward air either which was nice. It’s always nice to get away, but it has to be the right kind of place, and thankfully it was just right here. We really enjoyed our time, and felt like we were treated very very well, so it’s definite y a place that I would recommend if you’re looking for somewhere in the Cotswolds area. FOOD & DRINK
For good food
and drink...
Come to Coventry! It’s not always everyone’s first idea when it comes to good food and drink, but visitors to Coventry are in for a real treat this autumn and winter with a raft of events to tickle everyone’s taste buds. The Coventry Ale Trail returns on October 12 & 13, offering the chance to see some of the city’s historic pubs and taverns as well as enjoying a tasty tipple. Start your journey at a venue of your choice and collect your 1/3 pint souvenir glass then work your way around the city and its ales. Venues include: The Twisted Barrel; The Castle Grounds; The Golden Cross; The Town Crier; Town Wall Tavern; The Gatehouse Tavern and The Old Windmill. Book tickets via Eventbrite. Just a few weeks later, Coventry will be kickstarting Diwali celebrations with the ‘Festival before the Lights’ from October 24-27, bringing international food and drink into the city for a celebration of the huge array of cultures that make up Coventry and its food and drink. From November 21-24, a Christmas Feast weekend will kick off the countdown to Christmas, showcasing local restaurants, bars, producers and more in three days of food-filled fun. November 21 also marks the start of a festive food offering in Broadgate in the city, with cabins giving people the chance to shelter from the cold, take a break from Christmas shopping and enjoy something to eat or drink. Trish Willetts, manager and director at Coventry’s BID (Business Improvement District), said: “People don’t always put Coventry at the top of their list when it comes to a destination for great food and drink, but that’s about to change. This autumn we’re kicking off a packed programme of events and festivals that will really show what Coventry’s all about. From seeing some of our most historic pubs to having a cocktail in one of the many bars we’ve got here, to the wide range of food offering across the city and celebrating everything Coventry through our festivals, anyone who visits the city over the next few months is going to have their socks knocked off. “If you want a fl vour of what Coventry really is about, come and see one of our events, take in the city, and taste a city that’s going from strength to strength. We really have got something for everyone.” Visit www.coventrycitycentre.co.uk for more information, and follow on Facebook and Twitter.
CHATTY CAFE
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS by Steve Coulter
With the festive season just around the corner, thoughts are turning to spending time with family and friends. Sadly the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation is a not confined to Christmas. In 2018 the Office for National statistics revealed that 2.4 Million adults in Britain suffer from chronic loneliness. Research indicates that a down turn in mental health may have a negative effect on a persons physical health Politicians and health professionals are seeking solutions but one ingenious project. offers hope. The Chatty Cafe scheme provides an opportunity to socialise and enjoy a quick brew. As Chatty Cafe founder Alexandra Hoskyn explains “Coffee shops designate a Chatter and Natter table where customers of all ages can sit and talk to fellow customers. Alexandra came up with the idea whilst visiting her local cafe, She recalls “I was sat in Sainsburys cafe in Oldham with my 4 month old son and felt fed up. I looked round the cafe and saw people who I imagined felt the same way. I thought what a shame we could not sit together and have a chat. Even a short conversation can brighten your day.” Chatty Cafes have proved popular up; and down the Country. In the West Midlands and Warwickshire 33 cafes have installed a chatter and natter table. Alexandra’s brainchild has gained the backing of Andy Street, the West Midlands Mayor is encouraging more venues to sign up. Other sections of the community have a part to play. Alexandra feels Community centres and Libraries could incorporate a space to mingle and enjoy the company of others. Anyone is welcome to suggest suitable venues.. In an era where people are glued to their mobile phones it is still good to talk. FOR FURTHER INFO: CALL CHATTY CAFE ON 07917 586 160. OR LOG ON TO www. thechattycafescheme.co.uk.

Making the most
of autumn ingredients
When it comes to producing great food, seasonality is right up there in the list of top priorities. To many people, the change from summer to autumn is one of the most noticeable seasonal changes. Long summer days, light food and refreshing drinks are replaced by a yearning for warm, hearty food, log fires cosy corners and heavier drinks. At Loxleys we try to balance keeping some of our most popular dishes - the ones that can work with any season - on the menu all year round, as well as making sure we give a nod to seasonality, using locally-sourced, top quality produce to make the dishes that people want as those leaves start to fall from the trees. Take our soup starter - it’s always a seasonal creation, depending on what’s available at that time of year, so in autumn you can be guaranteed to find a bowl of something warm and hearty to tuck into as the temperature drops, complete with freshly-baked bread. When it comes to main courses, we’ve got plenty that fit the bill for autumn. Our spiced and glazed Gressingham duck breast with parsnip, pear, stilton bon bon, pistachio, watercress and red wine reduction is just the thing for an autumnal lunch or dinner, as is our slow confit pork belly with Applewood smoked cheek, shallot puree, black pudding potato cake and apple jus. And let’s not forget our vegan-friendly smoked tofu with Puy lentil and aubergine fritters, ‘Buffalo’ cauliflowe , pepper puree, tomato and smoked chilli salsa. If you’re after something a bit more homely to curl up in a corner with and enjoy with a glass of wine, how about our spicy Italian meatballs, or our lasagne al forno with Mozzarella garlic focaccia - perfect to warm you up if it’s a bit chilly outside. On top of all these, we can’t forget our steaks - something we’ve become renowned for. Our steaks are 28-Day, dry-aged Hereford beef and served with plum tomato, fl t mushroom, wild rocket, double-cooked chips or skinny fries and a choice of sauce. If you want something a bit more casual on an autumn day, you could try the Loxleys brisket and dry-aged steak burger, or go for our Bourbon-glazed barbecue ribs with Buffalo hot sauce wings, Chipotle pulled pork, red cabbage slaw and skinny fries. Of course, these are just suggestions. We all know autumn doesn’t necessarily mean cold, and that the weather doesn’t dictate what you want to eat. That’s why there are plenty of other classics, from fish to vegetarian dishes and more.

Level 25
Marco Pierre White
When we went to Level 25 Marco Pierre White, we were not sure what to expect or indeed how it would all turn out. We were pleased to discover that it would only go well and that we were dealing with incredible staff, a wonderful place and a very generous service. But let’s start at the beginning and focus on what we’ve got to work with here. It’s a very lovely place located in Birmingham. What we had was something called the “Bottomless Brunch”. It’s a system where for 90 minutes, you can have as much alcohol as you like and a selection of delicious meals brought to you. Now, we would like to clarify that we didn’t get incredibly drunk. First of all, that isn’t something that the establishment allowed. The terms and conditions for the bottomless brunch clearly specify that drinking to excess is not permitted. Second of all, we had to drive. So as you can imagine, there wasn’t much alcohol that we got to sample, but as a system, it’s quite genius. They provide people with an unlimited supply of drinks, but only to a point. They don’t have to deal with drunk and unruly behaviour, and they also ensure the satisfaction is kept high. Aside from that, the food was very nice. Everything was done just right, and presented in such a way that it looks very appealing. There were a selection of different options to choose from, and we were quite happy with what we got in the end. The staff were all very nice too. It tends to make or break and experience depending on how good the serving staff are. You need to feel like you’re being looked after, and we definite y did. In addition to this, they were really easy to talk to, and did offer some homespun wisdom about the different dishes that were being wheeled out. There was something about the entire atmosphere which was very appealing. In a lot of places where alcohol is freely available, you tend to get quite a loud and raunchy atmosphere. Which is fine in some elements, but in other situations it’s just unwanted and unneeded. Thankfully here we found that it was quite easy to relax, and that the environment was one of just peace and intimacy. Had a really good time, and there is no doubt that I go again. If we were planning to go for a full day, then I would probably take advantage of the alcohol that was available. However, it was only the fact I had to drive and be responsible that restricted me. If you had somewhere to go at the end of the day, like a hotel or something, then this would be a good idea. Despite this, it was a lovely place to be and I really enjoyed all of the different foods and the overall quality of service. It was great fun and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Libertine Burger by Ellen Manning
If you want a burger in Birmingham, you’re lucky enough to have a few great places right on your doorstep. Meat Shack, Original Patty Men, Bonehead for chicken to name but a few. But move out of the city into Warwickshire and you might find yourself struggling a bit. Unless of course you happen to be in or close to Leamington Spa where the almighty Libertine Burger resides. Libertine started life as a street food van set up by local chef Charles Harris. They’re all about the burgers, serving their own signature patties with a whole array of lip-smacking toppings, and quickly became up there with the best. Reaching the finals in both the British Street Food Awards and National Burger Awards, Libertine soon cemented its popularity and opened up in its own permanent home in Warwick Street. If that wasn’t enough, they’ve just opened a second restaurant in nearby Rugby, official y opening the doors on October 1. As a Rugby resident, the new restaurant in the town’s Swan Centre is an exciting addition and hopefully a sign of good things to come in terms of food and drink. As a Libertine fan, I enjoyed an advance visit to the restaurant during its soft launch and definite y wasn’t disappointed. From industrial interior complete with retro games console and open kitchen to an expansive upstairs space, casual dining feel and welcoming staff, it’s everything a great burger joint should be. The menu oozes the same simplicity as the Leamington venue, with burgers known by their numbers and ranging from simple to stupendous. Beef patties are Libertine’s own blend, made from grass-fed, dry-aged, organic Aberdeenshire beef from Aubrey Allen, while the chicken version uses a whole chicken breast, tenderised, marinated in buttermilk and coated in a signature blend of herbs, spices and flours before they’re fried. There’s also a vegan option of a panko-fried vegan mac n cheese patty with all the toppings, as well as veggie mac’n’cheese burgers. If a top quality burger just isn’t enough for you, you can choose from fries and sides or go for one of their gut-busting shakes. And yes, if you want to have a drink, they’ve got a full menu of beers, cider and wine as well as soft drinks. On our visit I went for one of my faves - a #25. The trademark burger with American cheese, lettuce, ketchup, mustard and pickles - plus crispy bacon, stilton and red onion jam. This rich, deeply-fl voured creation balances sweet with savoury and is definite y not one for the fainthearted. But if you like your big fl vours, it’s one for you. I also had my first experience trying one of Libertine’s chicken burgers - loaded up with American cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and pickles along with additional blue cheese mayo and buffalo hot sauce to form the #022. If you’ve only ever had a chicken burger made of reformed chicken, limp lettuce and a soggy bun, I implore you to go and try one of these. A well-seasoned chicken burger, still crispy thanks to the fact it’s just been cooked, with a lava of cheese, mayo and hot sauce dripping down the sides. Yet more evidence that these guys know how to do burgers. I could go on, but I won’t. Libertine is something to be experienced. And now you can choose between two places. So next time you’re in Warwickshire, do the right thing. Visit Libertine Burger. You can find Libertine Burger on Warwick Street in Leamington Spa, or at the Swan Centre in Rugby. You can also find them on Inst gram and Facebook.

EDUCATION
A Day in the Life
of a trainee teacher
My day as a trainee teacher usually starts with a cup of coffee and a quick scan over my timetable as, through my own experiences, I begin to realise that no two days are the same. I have a meeting with my Daily Trainer as today I will be teaching my first lesson. Before I take the stand I have a scheduled observation of a specialist teacher with whom I will note down strategies I can use in my own practice. With my confidence high it’s my turn to take the stage so to speak. With a mad flur y of thoughts I quickly remember the teaching tools and strategies I have learnt through my Professional studies sessions, observations and school experiences. With all eyes on me, I begin to implement the theory into practice and suddenly realise that this is it, this is what it’s all about. Students focused, listening and hanging on my every word. The expectations I set are being adhered to, the activities are being enjoyed and most importantly the students are learning. The bell goes and the lesson ends. I’m exhausted but absolutely buzzing; a thumbs up from my daily trainer and I’m overcome by the Wow factor. This is why I chose to train to teach and I get the privilege of doing it all again tomorrow.
I couldn’t have opted for a better route into the teaching profession. My experience with South Birmingham SCITT, meant that I was able to learn and develop as a teacher in a classroom setting. From regular mentor meetings, subject specific training and wellbeing days, I feel the support and guidance I had during my training was excellent and invaluable. It was great to share experiences with other SCITT trainees and colleagues. It is a hard year but so worth it in the end. I made some great friends and I have been able to work with amazing staff. I look forward to my RQT year! Best wishes - Stephanie
Taking the SC ITT route in to teaching was, for me, the id eal path. I had worked in sc hool previously as a member of supp ort staff and now fe lt ready to ‘take the plunge’ into te aching. EDUCATION
Whether you’re a fresh graduate or have 20 years experience in an entirely different field you are still capable of being a successful teacher and can make an impact on the children you teach. As a teacher, every day is different and offers you a new challenge. There are no limits to what can be achieved, and there is nothing more satisfying than watching a young person learn something new or master a situation with the knowledge that you had a part to play in their development.
A Day in the Life
of a teacher by Sarah Swords
My day, as Miss Swords, usually begins in the middle of the night when I wake up with a fabulous idea for my next classroom display. For this I keep post-it notes next to my bed to write my ideas down (sad I know lol!). When my alarm goes off in the morning, I can honestly say, I wake up excited for my working day. Teaching is not the type of job where you wake up and dread your shift. Every day with your children brings something new.
It is so rewarding to hear ‘I understand it now Miss’. The best part of teaching is definite y seeing the children excited about their learning and making progress . Between lessons I am busy marking and I try to ‘live mark’ in the lesson where possible. This allows one to one conversations with children about their targets to improve.
“ ”
Teaching is so much more than standing in front of a whiteboard.
Arriving at school at 7.30am, I have my own little routine, every teacher does. Tea is a must, breakfast next, fresh fruit in the basket for my class and then time to set up. I set up my lessons, always beginning with Mathematics or English in the morning, the books are lined and the classroom is transformed ready to learn. I have been teaching for 15 years and I still get excited about the lessons I have planned. My lessons are fun and I use lots of different teaching styles and innovative ideas this ensures my lessons are accessible for all children.
At lunchtime I try to eat with the children. It is lovely to spend time with them outside the classroom. It also gives a good opportunity to spot those children who may not be feeling themselves that day and need a friend.
My children arrive and I always allow a little time for anyone who has something they want to talk to me about or share with the class. I say ‘my children’ because for that year the children you teach literally become yours. You find yourself thinking about what they need and you celebrate like a proud parent when they achieve (even the smallest goals).
I love teaching, it is my passion! Yes, it is hard work, but the rewards definite y out way the workload.
They say time flies when you are having fun and in school it really does. Before you know it, the bell has gone, the children are leaving. The teacher’s day doesn’t end there. I like to stay and do my marking, taking as little home as possible.

Exciting times in
The Overtones camp
You have a new tour announced, a new track out plus a new member Jay James, who has joined the band following the departure of Lockie Chapman. Darren Everest: “We’ve known Jay for 10 years now. We first met on a charity record we were both on for The Samaritans and then over the years we’d meet at charity football matches, events and parties and were lucky enough to have Jay open up for us at a few shows. He always went down an absolute storm. When we were discussing a new member he was the only name that came to our minds. Our audiences and fans love him, he’s got charisma, and he looks great in a suit - which you need. I phoned him said ‘Jay, how you doing? Do you fancy being an Overtone?’. I better not repeat what the exact words were back but it was in essence: ‘Yes, I’d love to’. The last couple of months we’ve been grafting away, training Jay up and refreshing it all for us as well.”
Were you shocked to get the phone call, Jay? Jay James: “Yeah completely. I’ve supported the boys on a number of occasions and I remember doing my set and going out to watch them. Within 45 seconds - that’s no exaggeration - the audience would be on their feet dancing and singing. You’d be happy to see that at the end of the show. For that to happen right at the start shows how special it is. The Overtones aren’t just about the members in it - and I mean that with the greatest respect, I’m thankful to be one - it’s what they bring… incredible music, incredible nights and memories for people who are looking to maybe escape their own lives for an hour or two. The response over the last few days has been so overwhelming because you realise The Overtones is an extended family and how special that is and how much it means to people. To be part of that is unreal.”
perfect fit’ With our new song that we’ve released - September - everyone now gets to hear how we sound as a new four-piece as well, which has been great.”
Mark Franks: “It was really hard keeping the news about Jay a secret because we’ve been so excited. The response has been awesome. Everyone’s saying: ‘What a
Jay: “I’d be lying to say I hadn’t looked at the boys and wondered what it would be like to be part of that because what they have got is really cool. I was in the Navy for 10 years
The fans must have been excited to know it wasn’t the end of the band. Did you consider carrying on as a threepiece? Mike Crawshaw: “We always felt like The Overtones needs to be a four-piece. After the tragic loss of Timmy (Matley) we carried on, released an album and toured. Lockie decided he wanted to go down a different avenue and focus on a solo career – which is fine and we wish him all the best. We decided we wanted to have another member in the band for the dynamics, the harmonies, and the routines. We never saw The Overtones as a three-piece. Jay fits in so perfectly in every way, it feels like he’s always been in the band.”
and, although I’ve been a solo artist for a long time, becoming part of a group again has been really special. In the last couple of months we’ve gone from a friendship to feeling like I’ve got three brothers.” Darren: “He’d never danced and sang at the same time before - it’s multi-tasking.” You could have done The X Factor All Stars Jay but instead you’ll be on The Overtones Christmas tour. Will you prefer being with the boys instead of back in front of the judges? Jay: “I had an incredibly valuable experience on The X Factor and I’m so grateful for the platform it gave me, don’t get me wrong it’s been hard but it definite y helped with opportunities since, whether that be breaking into broadcasting and what I do now at Forces Radio BFBS, or performing live – as I did when supporting the boys. I got a little phone call to see if I would be up for the All Stars tour. Simon said on The X Factor: ‘I promise you that you’ll have a great career’.

Jay: “Nothing is really changing in regards to the essence of The Overtones sound and what they do.” Darren: “The last tour was a tribute to Timmy. We had his picture on screen. No doubt we’ll talk about it but I think it’s important to put on a great show and remember the good times and make people smile. I don’t know if there’ll be a tribute as such to Timmy. Obviously Lockie’s gone his own way. They might be mentioned on the microphone but it’s going to be about putting on a great show.”
Was it him who rang you? Jay: “No, it was someone else who rang to say: ‘Would you be up for it?’. At that point I wouldn’t have wanted to anyway because of my work in radio and how far I’ve come since but I had also been asked by the boys to join them and had been in Overtones training ‘boot camp’ so It was an absolute no-brainer to be part of the legacy they have worked so hard to create over the last nine years. This is another level.” New single September is out now. What’s next? Another single then album before the tour? Mark: “September is not so much a single as a buzz track in terms of: ‘This is our new sound’. We were desperate for people to hear us as a new four-piece with Jay. I can’t believe we’ve not done September before, as it’s such a feel-good song for the summer. It’s the start of things to come. We’ll be back in the studio soon recording new material with the view to releasing a new album in the future. We don’t want to give too much away.” Mike: “What’s important to us is we’ve got to a great level where we are able to release music and tour but now it’s time to push on and grow. It’s time to go to countries that we’ve never been to. That’s what we’re looking forward to - setting ourselves the challenge of pushing on now. Everything’s going to step up a notch, which is exciting.” There will always be that legacy of Timmy on stage. Will you do anything to honour his memory on the new tour? Mark: “We know he would be so proud of us. Jay got to meet Timmy and I think he’d be over-the-moon. It’s about respecting that legacy and also looking to the future and doing what The Overtones do best - and that’s make people smile.”
Solihull OCT 19.indd 49
Jay: “For the announcement of me joining we thought about how we do it and came up with the film trilogy idea. We thought it important we pay tribute to the past Overtones at the beginning and moving forward. It’s so nice so many people picked up on that. It was very much acknowledging that The Overtones are bigger than this moment and I think that will always be the case. I’ve always considered myself a Toner. It’s got to be respected and celebrated.” Mark: “Jay’s had his work cut out, bless him. We’ve got six album’s worth of material, the new song September and looking forward to the new material that we’re gonna learn. He’s been grafting.” It sounds like it’s been an effortless move into the band. Has it been easier Jay than your X Factor experience? Jay: “The X Factor by no means was a natural thing for me. Standing in front of the camera and being an amplified characterised version of yourself in order to be noticed felt a difficult thing. That’s not by any means what everybody wants to do when going on shows like the X Factor – for me it wasn’t about looking for fame. I’d say when I got into music it was not about being famous it was about expressing myself, getting up on stage doing what I love to do, connecting with people who are maybe going through the same things and make a living doing it. In many ways, I felt I spent years trying to get that mainstream spotlight and when I found it on The X Factor I realised that maybe what I wanted was just to do music and be able to perform. To see what the boys do - and have done for the last nine years - is incredible. They’ve managed to stay relevant, sell out tours, and have great success whilst staying true to their own morals and principles, being themselves, which in this game seems really rare. I feel like that’s all I ever wanted, so in many ways - to answer your question - it felt really natural stepping into a group of
|
friends that have the same beliefs that you do. That’s been easy.” It’s hard in this day and age to sustain a fan base like The Overtones have. Do you feel like you don’t get enough credit for your achievements? Darren: “We don’t take it for granted. We work hard and we want to grow. We are so thankful for the success that we have. We can’t wait to put on the best tour yet.” Jay: “A great song is a great song. When you listen to the albums that the boys have done you can go: ‘Oh my God, that’s an absolute banger’. It’s great getting to learn all these songs that you already know and can picture that great moment in your life where you heard it first” The tour leads up to Christmas as usual. Are you going to do Secret Santa this year? Darren: “It’s so great for our fans to know every December we’re doing the Christmas tour. We’re picking the best songs from our back catalogue, which is growing every year and throwing in a few surprises and nice Christmas songs. People come out with their office or if they just want to have a good night at Christmas. It’s really cool to be a staple in people’s calendars. Secret Santa… maybe we need to do something.” Mike: “Getting to Christmas we’ll have completed a tour with Jay, released new music. A lot will have happened in the last five months. It’s go-time now. He’s in the band. We’ve kept it secret for a while when all we wanted to do was tell people. Now it’s out there, let’s get to work.”

The National Pet Show… UK’s ‘ultimate day out for animal lovers of all ages’ returns to Birmingham It’s time to let the cat out of the bag… the National Pet Show, sponsored by Petsurance from The PDSA, is back for its sixth year. It returns to Birmingham’s NEC on the Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November. Bigger, better and furrier than ever, The National Pet Show will showcase so much more than just pups and pussycats. Tagging along will be everything from reptiles to rabbits, ponies to parrots and goldfish to guinea pigs just to start!
super-experienced four-legged athletes clear hurdles, catch a tennis ball, flip around and hurtle back to the start of the course, all while racing another dog alongside. It’s true high octane Fido fun!
It’s fun for all the family as animal lovers great and small can learn about a myriad of species and breeds – as well as getting the chance to stroke them and take selfies with them along the way.
The Activity Arena will once again be a huge draw at the show. Stunt animals will amaze the crowds as they demonstrate the kind of training that’s won them parts in blockbusters of stage and screen. In School4Dogs top trainers will strut their stuff with precision trained charges, while Temptation Alley promises to be a true claw-biter of an event: dogs will run the gauntlet of toys, treats and all manner of tempting titbits, with uproarious consequences!
There’ll be enthralling educational talks from experts plus ongoing animal demonstrations while the displays will have visitors clapping, cheering, and even joining in. Brand new this year is ‘Family Fur Tunes’. One of the highlights of the show, it will see family teams led by Autumnwatch presenter Michaela Strachan and TV vet Rory Cowlam. Both sides will be invited to ‘pet their wits’ against each other in a hilarious quickfire challenge that tests their animal knowledge. They’ll compete, twice a day, with different families in each slot. Would-be contestants must register in advance online for a chance to win a place. On the Saturday The SuperVet, AKA Professor Noel Fitzpatrick will give a talk, especially for children, from the incredible Noel’s Ark set. Britain’s Got Talent’s Lucy Heath will show off her training miracles, not just with dogs, but cats this time too. Visitors should keep their eyes peeled for other famous faces - and famous furries - as further names will be announced nearer the date of the show. The Guinness World Records team will be measuring, testing and recording a jawdropping parade of pets in a live show where each will attempt to secure a new record. They’ll be bringing along the UK’s tallest dog and the most agile agility pooch, along with other extraordinary critters. The fun continues with a number of current record holders who’ll be demonstrating the amazing feats that secured them a place in Guinness’s hall of fame. Normally the domain of serious enthusiasts only, the general public can ‘borrow a dog’ to try the frenetic sport of flyball where lightning-fast,
With a focus as always on rehoming unwanted and unloved pets, the show’s very own Animal Rescue Barn, sponsored by Sleepeezee, has partnered with a number of wonderful rescue charities. Together they aim to introduce as many animals as possible over the weekend to new owners - and their ‘furever’ home. Experts and ‘pet matchmakers’ will be on hand to find out more about visitors’ lifestyles, then guide them on their potential choice of pet. Sadly there’s always a need and even former battery hens and rabbits will be up for adoption. This heartwarming feature is not to be missed. This year’s National Pet Show welcomes Dogs with Jobs back again. These remarkable dogs carry out vital jobs for their owners and trainers. Their ‘careers’ span police dogs who sniff out criminal evidence, search and rescue dogs who locate those lost, trapped or injured in dangerous situations and assistance dogs who provide lifechanging help for people with disabilities. The line-up is completed with super-chilled therapy dogs who work in hospitals and nursing homes to comfort those in need, and in schools, helping children to read. The Canine Catwalk will delight visitors with stunning dogs of all shapes and sizes. They’ll be walked by their doting owners while the show’s compere grills them on their characteristics and care. More than 70 dog breeds will be present at the show and each have their own personality types and needs.

ENTERTAINMENT There’ll be a special focus on seldom-seen ‘vulnerable’ breeds too: those in danger of dying out. It’s all about creating awareness, showing would-be owners how to look after them, and hopefully pulling them back from the brink. Visitors can get papped (or is it pupped?!) over at the Hound Hangout. There they’ll have the chance to meet some of the UK’s most famous Insta-pooches from social media. Come join the fanbase! The show’s ‘All About’ Theatres are packed with sessions on responsible ownership and specific care requirements for different pets. With feline facts and canine case studies as standard, visitors can learn about more unusual pets too, including reptiles, spiders, bugs and lizards… who will dare venture close? Dogs, cats, ‘small furries’ and more will all have their own special ‘villages’. Visitors can get up close and personal with different varieties and find out more about how best to care for them... Exotic breeds will be on show in the Cat Village, sponsored by Hill’s. This year the National Pet Show once again plays host to The International Cat Show; a championship exhibition of cat royalty where the country’s finest blue-blooded pedigrees battle it out to be crowned best of breed. The Small Furries Village, sponsored by Burgess Pet Care, stars rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, chinchillas, degus (small, sociable rodents from Chile) and more. The enchanting Secret Rabbit Garden is the ‘mustsee’ central feature here. This specially built environment reveals endless ‘enriching’ activities that keep rabbits mentally and physically happy and healthy. Mounds, multiple tunnels and entrances, hollow logs, peep holes and more… it’s bunny heaven.

For the pet – or the owner – who has everything, there’s some serious Christmas shopping on offer. Amazing gift ideas will be on display, from ‘stuff you need, to stuff you didn’t even know existed’. The Marketplace area will be stocking filler heaven, with opportunities to pick up personalised treats for animals or animal lovers alike. More on the National Pet Show can be found at: www.thenationalpetshow.com and on social media at: • Facebook: @nationalpetshows • Instagram: @nationalpetshow • Twitter: @nationalpetshow Location and opening hours: • Hall 4, The National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham • Saturday 2nd November - 9:30am - 5:00pm • Sunday 3rd November - 9:30am to 5:00pm Tickets: • call 08712 200260 Ticket prices: • Adults - £19.90 • Family: 2 adults & 2 children - £16.00 (£64 total) • Child aged 6 to 16 - £15.50 • Senior citizen 60+ - £17.80 • Student - £17.50 Please note booking fees apply. Carers and personal assistants for visitors with mental or physical health conditions go free
The Animal Village, sponsored by Fluval and Exo Terra, is home to the bigger beasties, including alpacas, donkeys, Shetland ponies and miniature horses. Smaller creatures there include ferrets and little-known pouch rats from the Gambia, a species so intelligent they’ve been trained to sniff out landmines. There’s also a magical bird section, from endearing budgies to stunning parrots, some with truly remarkable vocabularies; one can say “chocolate”, mimic a chicken and even blow raspberries! From the birds to the bees… there’s an interactive beekeeping display to highlight the importance of these vital pet pollinators - and our fragile environment. And visitors mustn’t forget to explore the watery wonderland of the fish and aqu tics section! For little ones there’s even more fun: the Kids Zone offers animal talks, story sessions, book signings, arts and crafts and much more besides.

SLADE
are back on the road with a November & December 2019 – UK Tour playing BIRMINGHAM – O2 Institute 2 on Sunday 22nd December! SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock’n’roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits….plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm f vourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. SLADE’S chart career has spanned 5 decades and their enduring songs “Cum On Feel The Noize” and “Coz I Luv You” are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song “Get Down And Get With It” then, released in October of the same year “Coz I Luv You” was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe’s biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade’s catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:“Take Me Bak ‘Ome”, “Mama We’er All Crazee Now”, “Cum On Feel The Noize”, “Gudbye T’ Jane”, along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the worlds biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem “We’ll Bring The House Down”, which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 200,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved
the way for the single “Lock Up Your Daughters”, and the album “Til Deaf Do Us Part”. While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit “My Oh My” to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of “Cum On Feel The Noize”, which proved so successful that they followed it up with “Mama We’er All Crazee Now”. Throughout the rest of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop’n’rock. The early nineties saw the bands “Radio Wall Of Sound” hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! Film
Maleficent Mistress of Evil
ELLEN MIROJNICK’s (Costume Designer) creative roots run deep. Born and raised in New York City, her early interests in fine art, photography and fashion led to the prestigious High School of Music and Art. After graduation, she further pursued her study of design at The School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design. Mirojnick entered the world of fashion after Parsons School of Design. Her fashion-forward instincts quickly propelled her to become one of the most sought after designers in the field Her talent for creating youthful, au courant style reverberated throughout the industry. It wasn’t long before Mirojnick set her sights on Hollywood, beginning a career that has spanned three decades. As a pre-eminent Hollywood costume designer, Mirojnick’s passion for contemporary design has had an impact on motion picture style. Mirojnick’s film work has exhibited a sophisticated, timeless approach to modern storytelling and has yielded iconic characters that have become cultural references. She has been nominated twice for BAFTA and Emmy® Awards, winning the Emmy for “Behind the Candelabra.” In 1998, she received a Saturn Award for her work in “Starship Troopers” and has been honored with the Cutty Sark Menswear Award for her sartorial statement in “Wall Street.” She has been nominated by her peers on multiple occasions for the CDG Award, winning for both “Behind the Candelabra” and “The Knick,” and in 2016 was honored with the Career Achievement Award. The list of prominent filmmakers Mirojnick has designed for is extensive, and includes: Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Paul Verhoven, Tony and Ridley Scott, Kathyrn Bigelow, J.J. Abrams and Angelina Jolie, to name a few. Mirojnick has lectured at UCLA, the Lincoln Center Film Society, the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has been profiled in numerous international fashion publications, as well as on AMC’s Hollywood Fashion Machine series, “The Costume Designer.” In addition, she is also featured in the design book “Filmcraft.” Her work has been displayed in the “50 Designers/50 Films” exhibit at AMPAS, the Florence Biennale, FIDM’s Annual Film and Television Exhibits in 2011-13 and 2015, and the “Hollywood Costume“ exhibition, which originated at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Mirojnick’s diverse range speaks for itself, for in 2017 alone, her work could be seen in Soderbergh’s “Logan Lucky,” Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father,” and the opulent movie musical “The Greatest Showman.” Her diverse range continues in 2019 with the release of Soderbergh’s “Laundromat” and “Maleficent Mistress of Evil.”
What are your primary goals as costume designer? My role is to bring the characters to life visually. When I read a script, my first impression is to envision images. Working with the director, the actors and all the different artists involved in filmmaking we conceive a theme about the overall film vision. I begin to apply that vision to the costume designs to show how the characters feel, how they move through the story and how they change. Costume design is storytelling. It can subtly and subliminally convey the characters’ emotions and personalities to the audience and heighten their understanding.
What was it about this project that appealed to you? There was a new story to be told, and I’d never worked in this genre so it was quite attractive. Working with Angie is a very interesting experience because she is really, really smart and has an overall vision and the ability to work through a story in ways that are truly exceptional. Maleficent is a complicated character and a difficult one to define She has a huge story arc that ultimately brings her back to love. I just thought it was such a beautiful tale about pure, unconditional love.
How did you get started on this film? What sort of preparation was involved? I researched art from many different eras, as well as contemporary fashion, and created a look book with images for all the characters

in each of the different film segments. From that, the director and other film artists could see what I was envisioning. The look book becomes a foundation and valuable tool for the costume department. We constructed almost everything on this film from shoes to headwear. What we didn’t make we rented from stock houses around the world.
What is the time period in which the story takes place and how did that affect your designs? Well, what I hoped for and what we talked about early on, was the idea that this kingdom is a new, bustling, more citified kingdom. With that in mind, we asked ourselves, what would a more modern fairy tale look like in a time period that is somewhere in medieval times but bordering on the renaissance period, with a new fresh spin on that? With the freedom to create a new era, we broadened our use of fabrications, different colorations and silhouettes. Certainly more than you would use in a historically accurate period piece.
What can you tell us about Maleficent s overall look? Maleficent is the strongest character in the film…she needs to rise above everyone else, never blend in and always have her own unique silhouette and shape. Maleficent is iconic, so you have to be able to continue that idea and raise the stakes a bit. She is the black and white movie star of the fairy tale world: that’s the image we started with. Her skin is very white, her lips are red and her body is totally silhouetted in a very strong shape. Her accessories start off as organic and evolve to include bone and gold and eventually black diamonds and emeralds. Her dress in the opening scene is a goldish, green, color with a subtle reptile pattern. In this film she has wings, which is different than the first film so her costumes are made of fabrics that are fluid and fluttered beautifully in the wind. When she comes on screen, the simplicity of her silhouette with bone detail, the starkness of black and white with little bits of gold, and her red lips is striking. Her shape is high glamour, movie star slickness, gorgeous headgear, a crown of black diamonds and emeralds. Emeralds are very powerful now. Her stone and staff are emerald green, as are all her accents.
Tell us about Aurora’s wardrobe. Aurora’s wardrobe is ethereal with a touch of sophistication, perfectly suited for someone who reigns over a realm of mystical creatures. Hers is a modern fairy tale look with an impressionist color palette of
predominantly blues and pale pinks. I knew as Queen of the Moors it was essential that she begin her journey in a blue dress with an organic fairy tale design made in the forest. The result looks like hand-tied leaves made by the fairies…extremely magical, unlike anything that we have seen before. The look is totally different from her formal courtly dresses. I also love the Aurora pink dress because it has a revised element of the traditional design of the “Sleeping Beauty” dress. It is a paler shade of pink but has the same shape of the “Sleeping Beauty” collar. We embroidered the tulle and replaced the gold accents with flowers
What about Michelle Pfeiffer’s wardrobe as Queen Ingrith? Compared to Maleficent the contrast is night and day. Queen Ingrith’s look is regal and somewhat modern, and suggests an aire of wealth and privilege for the bustling kingdom. We used platinum, gold and champagne colors coupled with tons of jewelry to really bling her up and make a bold statement. She has a presence that is both soft and strong at the same time Her colors do not give any hint of her being evil…in fact, it’s quite the contrary. We first see her in a dress that is the palest color of champagne and creamy white, which she wears with a whole mantle of pearls. For the in-law dinner scene she is in a platinum dinner dress that’s bodice and skirt is totally adorned with a massive panel of diamonds and pearls. Altogether, Queen Ingrith has eight different dresses. They are all relatively the same shape but with different fabrics and accessories. When she goes to battle, her dress is stunning, conveying power, beauty and boldness. It is an armor-like ensemble with gauntlets and shoulder pieces adorned with pearls and silver. It looks like it is made of metal, but it is a very special kind of platinum woven into the design.
What do you hope audiences take away from the film It was a wild roller coaster ride making the film but that creates the fun for everyone to experience and for me it was so creative, fulfilling and satisfying. I hope that people get swept up in the story and are intrigued by the film s new characters that are different, diverse and mysterious, AND, after all is said and done, I hope everyone experiences the concept that love conquers all and that we can all live together in harmony without sacrificing our earth
“FROZEN 2”
WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®-winning team— directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.

I’m Steve Coulter. I was born in the bygone year of 1971, so I am eligible for the Antiques Roadshow. I have Cerebral Palsy, a physical disability which effects my hand and leg co-ordination. I am unable to walk so my electric wheelchair gets me from A to B.
Solihull High Street and the Purple Pound Turn on the TV these days and you are bombarded with images of empty shops. Up and down the country high streets are in decline. The rise of Internet shopping and escalating parking charges are cited have been at the core of the problem. Faced with this challenging environment traders need to adapt to keep their heads above water. Niche marketing may prompt an upturn in fortunes The Silver and Pink pounds illustrate how business have targeted the Elderly and LGBT communities. The high street has also extended its remit to the Purple pound, a sector which focuses on the needs of customers with a Learning/Physical disability. This group can not be overlooked, in 2017 the Purple Changing the Conversation group estimated that shoppers with disabilities had a spending power of £249 Million So how does Solihull rank in the Purple pound stakes. My biggest problem has been locating an accessible hairdressers For a period I visited Sporting Barbers in the high street. However, I had to rely on the helpful staff to lift my electric wheelchair beyond an imposing step. The situation became impossible when I upgraded to a bulker model. Unless Arnold Schwarzegger starts trimming barnets I will not be back. On the flip side the staff at Sainsburys and Morrisons have been friendly and helpful But how do fellow disabled shoppers fare in the town? Georgina Dear 48, has Spina Bifida and visits Solihulll three times a week. She told me “Most of the shops are great but some of the clothes outlets are a nightmare to get round.” Georgina highlight the issue of narrow isles which restrict access. Work clearly needs to be done but retailers are becoming more conscious of the Purple Pound.

England Set To Book Place
At Next Summer’s Euros By Alex Dudley
It’s shaping up to be another memorable summer of sport in 2020 with the Olympics already looking likely to be a golden time for Team GB. However, before that England will attempt to go one better than their World Cup showing and bring a first piece of silverware home since 1966 The Three Lions are yet to qualify for the competition official y, but this month they will have a golden opportunity to make sure of their spot with fixtures against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The Czech’s are currently occupying second spot in the group, and that fixture is like y to be a stiffer assignment than the away clash with Bulgaria. Regardless, this England time is unlike any for generations so we can begin to get carried away a little and start planning our route into the final of Euro 2020; which will also be held t the home of football- Wembley. Six points from the next two games would make the mission complete for Gareth Southgate and his young England side, and while the recent performances have been mixed; you would expect England to get over the line. The draw for the European Championships itself will take place after the next international break in November, but form will be crucial to assessing our chances next summer. England will come into the fixtures having scored nine goals in their last round of qualifying matches, with cynics quick to point out that the Three Lions also conceded three in that win at St Mary’s against Kosovo. The fixture against the minnows was certainly one that will live long in the memory, as in truth it was a bonkers game of football. England led 5-1 at half time after conceding inside one minute. Jadon Sancho was the star of the show for the Three Lions and his battle with Marcus Rashford for that starting place on the right-hand side of the forward three will certainly be a talking point for the next round of games, and one that Southgate must decide upon before the first game in June. That is only one of a few concerns for the manager. The other crucial ones revolve around the defensive areas. Jordan Pickford and Harry Maguire look certainties, but the positions around them remain anyone’s guess. Michael Keane started against Kosovo and was clearly at fault for the opening goal. John Stones’ inability to remain fit would also be a concern, and the door could be open for a sensational chance for Tyrone Mings. The upcoming fixtures will go some way into deciding how England could line up for the Euros when they kick-off. But, until then we should all sit back and enjoy the Three Lions at their attacking best to ensure their qualific tion. Both of England’s fixtures will be live on ITV on the 11th and 14th Octobe .

Fiat Tipo
2019 UK review By motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay - Twitter @carwriteups Instagram @tbarnesclay
A Fiat Tipo may not be on your list of cheap and cheerful cars, but it should be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bargain-basement territory, but at £18,150 you’ll get a new five-door hatch with decent kit. At least you will if you opt for the S-Design 1.4 T-Jet 120hp I drove for this review.
running lights with fog-lights are fitted What’s more, glossy black details around the front grille, fog-light surrounds and door mirrors give the car a bit of pizzazz. Importantly, this Tipo is equipped with six airbags and Fiat’s ‘Safety Pack’. This includes autonomous emergency brake technology and a speed limiter. The pack is a £250 optional extra, but I advise you to get it because it raises the car’s Euro NCAP crash-safety rating from a three-star to a four-star score. It’s a shame the company can’t get the model to top five-star st tus.
With a 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 124mph, it’s quick enough. And with a combined MPG of 47.1, the petrol-powered car is relatively economical. Room is good enough - my three young kids sat in the back seats without hassle. So, this a smallish hatchback that can serve a family. But if you’ve got three older children, you’d be better off with a larger car like a Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport. The Tipo’s boot is usefully rectangular, with enough space (440-litres) to fit a family of five s holiday luggage. Indeed, it surprised me that I could get one large suitcase and three carry-on bags in there. The drive isn’t the most dynamic, even though the car’s S-Design sporty image suggests otherwise. The steering is woolly, and the gears aren’t the slickest. But you can make the steering lighter around town by pressing a ‘City’ button on the dashboard. Also, the hatch sits happily commuting at motorway speeds. As alluded to earlier, the S-Design 1.4 T-Jet comes with a lot of equipment, making it feel good value for money. It’s fitted with Bi-Xenon headlights, Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto connectivity, as well as Fiat’s ‘Visibility Pack’- this houses rain and dusk sensors. Black fabric and ‘Techno Leather’ are used throughout the cabin, too – making it look quite special. Additionally, the driver’s seat has electric lumbar support – and you get a rear-view camera with parking sensors. Alas, the cheap plastics used throughout the interior soon tell you where cost savings have been made in the Tipo’s production. On the outside, the S-Design sits on 18inch diamond-cut alloys, and LED daytime

Sir Jackie Stewart unveils new BRM-Rover painting at the British Motor Museum Sir Jackie Stewart unveiled a new oil painting of himself driving the Rover-BRM gas turbine racing car in 1965 at the British Motor Museum on 29 September. The painting was commissioned by the Museum following a very generous donation from David Owen OBE and Rubery Owen. The Owen Organisation were owners of the BRM racing team. The special event was also attended by renowned motoring and aviation artist, Michael Turner who was commissioned to paint the work and Steve Cropley, Editor-in-Chief of Autocar magazine who chaired a Q&A session.
Other useful features in the Tipo hatchback comprise 60/40 split rear seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and remotecontrol central door locking. The Italian-made car also has a space-saver spare wheel stored under the boot floo .
Fast Facts (Fiat Tipo S-Design 1.4 T-Jet 120hp) • Max speed: 124 • 0-62 mph: 9.6 seconds • Combined mpg: 47.1 • Engine: 1368cc 4-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (ps): 120 • CO2: 139 g/km • Price: £18,150
Solihull OCT 19.indd 61
It was a chance conversation between Sir Alfred Owen and Rover’s boss William Martin-Hurst that led to the creation of the Rover-BRM gas turbine racing car. It first competed with Formula One drivers Graham Hill and Ritchie Ginther in 1963, securing a prize for the first gas turbine powered car to complete the Le Mans 24 hour race. In 1965 a much updated Rover-BRM returned to Le Mans when Hill was joined by BRM teammate Jackie Stewart (now Sir Jackie) where it finished the race in 10th place, the first all-British car home. Michael Turner had previously painted the Rover-BRM, in action at Le Mans in 1963, with Graham Hill at the wheel. His new painting, with Sir Jackie Stewart in the driver’s seat in 1965 depicts the RoverBRM closely followed by the eventual race winner, the number 21 Ferrari 250LM of Rindt and Gregory, together with Jack Sears and Dick Thompson’s AC Cobra Daytona coupé and the Thuner/ Lampinen number 60 Triumph Spitfire which would finish 10 laps behind the gas turbine car. The detail in the scene is made ever more evocative as Michael was there at Le Mans in 1965 to watch the Rover-BRM in person, capturing his own set of photographs.
When asked what the car was like to drive, Sir Jackie commented “It was bloody awful but there was nothing like it at the time! Driving the car at Le Mans was a revolution. The painting, too, is wonderful and a real piece of history. Michael is one of the best motor- racing artists and there are not many artists that can approach what this man can do. I have many of his paintings at home and in Switzerland. Its not easy to portray the cars in the right way, for example to get the tyres to behave accurately - but Michael does it”. Stephen Laing, Curator at the British Motor Museum said “We are delighted to have been able to commission this wonderful painting, made possible by Sir Alfred’s son, David Owen OBE who is a keen supporter of the Museum. It was a great privilege that Sir Jackie Stewart was able to unveil the painting which will be hung next to the Rover-BRM, one of the most prestigious cars in the Museum’s collection”. Museum entry is £14.50 for adults, £12.50 for concessions, £9 for children (5-16 years) and under 5s are FREE. There is also the option to Gift Aid or donate your entry fee and get an Annual Pass in return, at no extra cost. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Centre Stage in Balsall Common’s next production is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis. During the second world war four children are evacuated to a large old house in the country.
