We really love these bohemian and totally chic silk dresses from House of Frou Frou. Launched in 1999 by Cynthia Taylor, who designs readyto-wear collections from her studio in Somerset, dresses are made using individually sourced materials and finishes from vintage to new textiles, Indian trims and 1960s buttons, each piece of fabric is hand selected and crafted to make something unique and exquisite. After identifying a gap in the market for stylish and eclectic bridesmaid dresses, Cynthia took a deliberate step away from the traditional high street looks and designs and is launching her own interpretation of the ‘special’ dress for grown-up flower girls. www.houseoffroufrou.com

Gillian Million designs and creates wedding accessories and bespoke luxuries for brides all over the world, including celebrity and royal clients. Delicately handcrafted, every piece is made with passion and excitement and overseen by Gillian personally from exquisite fascinators, chic birdcage veils, cuffs, elegant silk veils, magnificent stoles, boleros, vintage combs, pearl vines and jewelled hair adornments. In addition to the individual care and attention offered by its well-established bespoke service, Gillian Million has an online shop which is regularly updated with new styles and ideas. You can browse at your leisure and purchase Gillian’s exquisite designs from the comfort of your own home. This being said, no online purchase goes through without a personal phone call from Gillian to ensure that she is meeting her customer’s expectations - now that’s what we call service! www.gillianmillion.com

If you’re looking for something particularly striking or unusual to complete your wedding look, then check out talented Cornish designer, Jessica Bissell. Jess is a passionate costumier with a degree in Theatrical Costume and Make-up, but since graduating, she has fallen in love with all things bridal and in December 2010, she started her own label, Jessicouture. She has a stunning collection of bridalpieces including bolero jackets, fascinators, hats, corsets, garters, jewellery and this gorgeous bridal mask, which would be perfect for a Masquerade or New Year’s Eve Wedding. www.etsy.com/shop/jessicabissell

a change of name Wedding, portrait and travel photographer, Victoria Walker has relocated to St Ives and re-branded her highly regarded photographic business. Victoria also commissioned web designer Andrew Griffin to design her new website and told Cornish Brides: “At the end of last year, I decided I wanted to re-brand my previous business name ‘ Victoria Studios’ to ‘Victoria Walker Photography’ and I wanted my website to have a soft, vintage and feminine touch to it, representing my style and my personality.” In addition to shooting on digital, Victoria also likes to shoot with retro film cameras, perfect for brides who like the thought of having some original vintage wedding photos to reminisce over. www.victoriawalkerphotography.co.uk

award-winning florist Did you know that Cornwall is home to a florist who has won several prestigious awards and been crowned second best florist in the UK? Erica Tippett is the owner of Bleujen Florist in Bude and in addition to creating stunning floral displays, she has a real passion for taking part in competitions such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. She is already the proud recipient of a silver guilt, a bronze and two silver medals, has previously finalised for the British Florist Association’s Young Florist of the Year award and last year was awarded second place in the Interflora Florist of the Year competition. But it’s not just Erica who is making a name in the competition world. Bleujen’s Sophie Watton secured a highly impressive sixth place for Great Britain at the internationally acclaimed annual Eurofleurs competition in Split, Croatia last year. By entering competitions, Erica believes it gives herself and her team the freedom to create innovative designs and experiment with magical ideas that go a long way to making their brides’ wedding day wishes come true. www.bleujenflorist.com

a gift of giving Couples wishing to spread their wedding joy can now support others less fortunate at the same time with a gift that makes a difference. In July 2006 Cornwall Hospice Care established their very own weekly lottery to help raise vital funds for their range of patient care services. Always looking for new ways to raise funds, Cornwall Hospice Care recently created their very own £1 ‘wedding favour’ lottery tickets giving wedding guests a chance to win up to £10,000 while supporting their local hospice. Anne Webb was given the job of sourcing the wedding favours for her daughter Lucy’s special day: “I couldn’t find a better gift for £1,” Anne told us. “Not only did we support our local hospices, but we gave our guests the chance of winning a fantastic cash prize. I wanted to support Cornwall Hospice Care as our family has experienced first hand the special care the charity gives.” www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk 42

to the manor born Neatly tucked away in a peaceful, secluded valley just three miles inland from the north Cornish coast lies Cornwall’s newest wedding venue, Pengenna Manor. Set in over 300 acres of beautifully lush countryside ensuring total privacy, couples can celebrate their special day in the 800 year old Grade II Manor House or one of several licensed areas. So, whether you're dreaming of a grand country house wedding with carriages, canapés on the lawn and a string quartet; a simple and natural countryside wedding with welly boots and hay bales or you have a bohemian vision of a big top marquee, acoustic guitars and lanterns strung amongst the trees, this hidden gem could be the ideal venue to make your wedding day dreams come true. www.pengennamanor.co.uk

THE WHITE ROOM There are some fabulous bridal boutiques in Cornwall offering brides-to-be an abundance of choice. Cornish Brides went behind the scenes at The White Room in Liskeard to find out exactly what makes them tick. Owner Anya Watkins shares her thoughts with us.

Why should brides choose The White Room? Here at the White Room, we offer a unique collection of high quality bridal gowns from some of the country’s leading designers. All our gowns have been specifically hand-picked to suit today’s chic and fashion conscious bride and we have specifically designed our boutique to offer a calming and relaxing environment for brides to come and choose their wedding dress.

What do you love most about your job? We absolutely love what we do and are passionate and dedicated to ensure our brides find their perfect dress and accessories. We are very hands-on with all of our brides and they become great friends as we share their incredible journey from their first appointment to the collection of their gown and the excitement of their big day.

What services do you offer brides and their party? We pride ourselves on offering an outstanding one-to-one service for all our brides, providing private appointments where they can relax, browse and try on as many gowns as they wish until they are happy and confident in their choice.

What are your top tips for brides? Do as much research as you can. Not all brides realise it can take up to six months for a wedding dress to arrive, so give yourself plenty of time to shop. Only have one or two closest family members or friends when trying on dresses as there can be some clashing ideas, confusing you even more. Don’t forget it’s your dress and never rule out a dress at first glance; we would always advise you to try it on as it could be ‘the one’.

What designers and collections do you offer? We stock some of the leading bridal designers and accessories and always ensure we have a wide range of designs. We are proud to stock Terry Fox, Elizabeth Stuart, House of Mooshki, Bellanovia, Nicki Flynn and True Bride; offering a selection of stunning gowns to suit every budget. What are brides really looking for? We all want excellent service and fantastic value and that’s the same for brides, but ultimately they want their perfect dress. How informed are brides? Brides are really embracing the internet and reading magazines such as Cornish Brides to research bridal designers and gowns, so we are finding the majority of brides already have a good idea of the type of gown that will suit their body shape and style by the time they come in. At the White Room we listen to our brides’ wishes and provide advice to ensure all our brides find the gown of their dreams, with a few surprises along the way! How do budgets vary? A bride’s budget can vary considerably, but we have a selection of gowns suitable for all budgets. We ensure all our brides receive a high quality service in order to find their perfect gown without compromising on style and quality whatever their budget.

How do you feel Cornwall compares to the rest of the UK bridal industry? Cornish brides have a vast choice of bridal shops and boutiques stocking an amazing variety of bridal gown designers. So what makes Cornwall such a special place to get married? I am a tad biased because Cornwall is the most beautiful county in the UK with amazing venues and locations from amazing beaches to stunning stately homes and castles; what more could any bride ask for? Have publications such as Cornish Brides helped your business? Most definitely. Our boutique has now been open for just over one year and publications like Cornish Brides have enabled us to advertise and promote our bridal boutique and bridal gown designers to brides across the southwest. Do you have any plans for the future you can share with Cornish Brides? Well, we are now in our second year and our plan is to continue providing an outstanding service to all our brides. We are adding new designers to our collection including our latest designer, Bellanovia. We feel it is important to maintain a personalised service and a unique boutique feel and we will always put our brides first.

catering for success We love a success story and approaching your company’s 30 year anniversary is a sign of huge success. In 1985, Jenny Taylor was happily pursuing her career as a home economics teacher and lecturer when an unexpected request from a friend led her into the world of catering and to starting her business, Truffles. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the years, Jenny has seen a huge amount of change in the way couples cater their wedding and her experience and knowledge of wedding catering is vast. Jenny still loves what she does and her Mylor-based business is thriving, although Jenny says she has lost count of the number of brides she has catered for over the years. What she does know is that many of those brides are now celebrating their own ‘milestone’ anniversaries whilst young new brides are just starting out and all are calling on Truffles to cater their celebrations. www.truffles-catering.co.uk

Cornish born Hannah Louise Lamb has designed this stunning Coast collection inspired by her childhood spent on Cornish beaches. You can choose any specific piece of coastline you would like on your rings - or the entire Cornish coastline - and Hannah will create completely unique pieces of jewellery just for you. flash bang wallop! Twenty-five years ago, Ron Bushell had just completed his ‘apprenticeship’ with arguably one of the best photogaphers in London and was about to strike out on his own. Having worked with film and in darkrooms, Ron appreciated the importance of every image and even in today’s digital age, he still ensures that the technical details are considered when capturing a moment in time. A licentiate member of the Master Photographer’s Association and the National Photographic Society as well as being a qualified member of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, Ron has maintained a classic style in his work, but now with a contemporary feel, embracing new digital technology which has allowed him to hone his skills and develop his professional capabilities to produce exquisitely romantic images. Such are Ron’s technical skills that he has been able to remove chicken pox scarring from a bride’s face and braces from a bridesmaid, too selfconscious to smile. A coach, annoyingly parked in the line of vision of the wedding party, has miraculously disappeared and other non-bridal related objects that have no place in a wedding photo are skillfully eliminated without the bride or groom even realising they were there! Working as a full-time photographer allows Ron to have complete control over everything he does and gives his clients peace of mind that the job will be done to the highest standards. www.ronbushellphotography.co.uk

PAPERChase We’ve all heard of the ancient Japanese art of origami - or paper folding - but have you ever thought of actually walking up the aisle with an origami bouquet? Sounds strange and even unlikely until you see one of these stunning origami flower bouquets made by Sam, the origami florist. Each beautiful bouquet is hand-made and tailored to your exact requirements, making it a one-off design that is truly unique and will last forever. Flowers are folded using the standard origami sized paper, so each individual flower is approx 1-2”, although larger flowers can be made. Flowers are then attached to a wire stem and brought together into the bouquet of your choice. A range of wrappings are available including coloured tissue paper, a raffia, twine or ribbon tie, cellophane wrap or a premium wrap which includes ribbons, rattan, midelina sticks, diamanté and decorative pins to really personalise your bouquet or match it to your chosen wedding theme. www.sesames.co.uk

A Scilly Romance Less than 30 miles off the far western tip of Cornwall lies a cluster of five small, but perfectly formed, islands. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and enjoying the mildest climate in the UK, this archipelago is a tranquil, unique and beautiful haven. Welcome to the Isles of Scilly. Arriving here for the first time is a strange, but amazing experience. It looks like Cornwall, it feels like Cornwall and yet it is different and somehow quite special. If you choose to fly in, you will be treated to the most amazing view of the islands as your plane completes its 15 minute journey from Land’s End. The islands are closer together than you perhaps imagined - at certain times of the year, you can walk on the seabed between them without getting your feet wet - they are tiny and they are stunning. Just over 2,000 people call these islands home with the majority - almost 1,800 - living on the largest of the five inhabited islands, St. Mary’s. It is no surprise, therefore, to discover just how uncrowded and peaceful this place is. On St. Martin’s, St. Agnes, Tresco and Bryher, cars are a rarity and life moves at a slow and sedate pace and it takes no time at all to fall in line as you feel the stresses of everyday life slowing easing further away. But don’t be fooled. This is not a place that time has forgot, although it may take a little longer to catch up than on the mainland. And yet, that is what makes these islands so charming. They may not yet have superfast internet access and in many places, your mobile ‘phone is next to useless, but you can still dine in style at the most modern and cosmopolitan restaurants, drink frothy cappuccino’s at chic little cafés and enjoy a bottle of wine at a trendy beachside bar as you watch a beautiful sunset at the end of long and tiring day doing next to nothing. How wonderful is that? Yes, life on Scilly is simple, relaxed and fun. The sea sparkles, the skies are blue and clear, the air is fresh and clean and the colours are vibrant. But the best thing about Scilly is the sense of freedom and space you feel as your wander along a white sandy beach or meander over the cliff paths or island hop on one of the many boats that bustle back and forth between these little clusters of land. There is no rush, no pressure, no stress. If you thought Cornwall was laid-back and unhurried, then be prepared to take relaxation to a whole new level. These islands are intoxicating and it is virtually impossible to not fall immediately and totally in love with them. Your first taste of the Isles of Scilly will herald the start of a romance that really will last forever.

Saying ‘I Do’ So, you’ve decided that you really would like to get married on the Isles of Scilly - good choice! But where will you say those all important words ... ‘I Do’. Well, the Isles of Scilly Register Office is situated right on Porthcressa Beach in Hugh Town, St. Mary’s and provides for the simplest of ceremonies with just enough room for the bride and groom and two witnesses - intimate, eh? For a slighty larger gathering, the new Beachside Room - attached to the Register Office - can accommodate up to 14 people, including the happy couple. This lovely light room with its south facing glass façade offers uninterrupted sea views and opens up right onto the beach. Just a short walk into town, you will find the Old Wesleyan Chapel - an approved venue owned and operated by the Council of the Isles of Scilly. This listed building dates back to 1825 and has been tastefully decorated to provide a perfect venue for a larger, more formal ceremony with up to 75 guests.

Also on St. Mary’s, you have a choice of three licensed venues. The Star Castle Hotel - a rather splendid Elizabethan fortress built in 1593 as part of the islands’ defences - commands a dramatic position on the fortified Garrison Hill to the west of Hugh Town. Now a family-run hotel boasting 38 bedrooms, two restaurants and an indoor swimming pool - all set within 4 acres of secluded gardens - the Star Castle offers a choice of three licensed spaces for your wedding. The Grade I listed Castle Dining Room with its original Elizabethan fireplace, the spacious Conservatory with sweeping views and trailing grapevine or the Castle Lounge, which is ideal for small ceremonies. For a wedding with a real sense of history and grandeur, this unique venue offers the perfect combination of modern, elegant service and magical fairytale romance.

Just down the hill towards the harbour, you will come across Tregarthen’s Hotel, which can offer a completely different wedding experience. Overlooking the sparkling sea, Tregarthen’s is perched right on the water’s edge with stunning views across to Tresco and Bryher and the uninhabited island of Sampson. A more modern and contemporary hotel, Tregarthen’s can cater for everything from an intimate ceremony to an extravagant celebration in a great choice of spaces, including the Ocean View Conservatory, the Lounge Bar, the Sea View Restaurant or the canopied Garden Terrace. The hotel can offer a good choice of quality accommodation for your guests and like most things on the Isles of Scilly, the approach here is friendly and flexible and the staff are happy to work with you to create the wedding of your dreams. Situated just above Portloo Beach on the other side of the sweeping bay, Juliet’s Garden started life as a small tea garden café. Thirty-one years later, it is a popular and successful restaurant with breathtaking views, superb food and an excellent reputation. The restaurant is housed in a converted barn loft with high ceilings, wooden beams and

panoramic views and the relatively new Balcony Room is a charming space for weddings for up to 20 people. Outside, a spacious terrace provides tiered seating which is perfect for wedding drinks and canapés and again, the views are just stunning. Friendly staff will help you meticulously plan every aspect of your wedding right down to the last detail and like their counterparts at the Star Castle and Tregarthen’s Hotel, you get the impression that nothing is too much trouble. For religious ceremonies, there are Church of England churches on each of the main islands, as well as Methodist churches on both St. Mary’s and St. Martin’s and Our Lady of the Sea Roman Catholic Church on St. Mary’s.

A trip to the Isles of Scilly should be at the very top of everyone’s ‘to do’ list and if you’ve never been, you really should start planning a trip soon. The adventure begins from the moment you arrive - either by plane or passenger ship - onto St. Mary’s, the largest of the five inhabited islands and yet covering an area of just 2.5 square miles. Hugh Town serves as the central hub for residents and visitors with its bustling harbour, winding streets, beaches and a cluster of shops, pubs and restaurants. The best way to experience Scilly is by island-hopping, which is so easy to do and an absolutely joy. At the harbour, you will find the ‘tripper boats’ - a small fleet of around a dozen boats operating under the banner of St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association, ready to set sail for Tresco, Bryher, St. Martin’s and St. Agnes - and the beauty is you don’t even have to book. SMBA tickets can be used on any service and if one boat is full, another will be brought out to ferry you to your chosen destination. Each island is completely different and quite unique and you really should take the time to visit them all during your stay; you might even choose to stay on one of the other islands as all offer exellent accommodation choices. Your first glimpse of St. Martin’s will be a stretch of dazzling white sandy beach lapped by turqoise seas and it just gets better and better as you explore this tiny land. Spectacular flowers, rare birds and stunning views will amaze you at every turn and you’ll find everything you need for a relaxing day or stay. St. Agnes is ruggedly beautiful and along with neighbouring Gugh, which is separated by a sandbar only at high tide, this is Britain’s most south-westerley community with some of the most dramatic views anywhere in the UK. Tresco is perhaps the most cosmopolitan of the islands, yet still amazingly beautiful and completely tranquil. The island is dominated by the sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Gardens, established by Augustus Smith in the 19th century and now home to an exquisite and rare collection of exotic plants gathered from every corner of the globe. Elsewhere on Tresco you’ll find Bronze Age burial sites and the ruins of ancient castles, as well as glorious beaches and views to die for. For the sophisticated traveller, Tresco is a dream with a range of stylish accommodation, chic restaurants, bohemian bars, an amazing deli and an award-winning spa. Bryher is just a stone’s throw from Tresco and is a tiny island of dramatic contrast with a unique charm that will leave you breathless. The community spirit here is strong and you will feel completely at home on this most delightful island where crystal clear waters lap gently at white sandy beaches. A few days island hopping around the Isles of Scilly will ensure that this is a place you will want to return to again and again and if you do want to get married here, you will be sure to create the most magical memories that you will cherish forever.

! g in d d e W y l il c S ’s a d Sam and Miran When we were asked to visit the Isles of Scilly to show what a completely beautiful and stunning location it is for a wedding, we were thrilled to bits. To then find out that an actual wedding was taking place during our stay was a bonus. But to then be invited by the bride and groom to be present during their celebrations was an honour and a privilege. Sam Gill and Miranda Nugent from Winchester, chose the picturesque St. Nicholas Church on Tresco for their wedding on June 26, so we took the midday tripper boat from St. Mary’s to allow plenty of time to see the happy couple arrive at the church for the 2pm ceremony. Cars are something of a raritiy on Tresco, so we managed to hitch a lift on a trailer being pulled along by a tractor and the driver very kindly deposited us right at the church gates! What followed was a stunning celebration that this delightful couple shared with an intimate group of close family and dear friends, who had made the trip over to the islands in order to be part of their very special and memorable day. This was a stylish, fun and wonderful day that was completely personal and unique to Sam and Miranda. And to make the day utterly perfect, the sun shone down from azure blue skies. Congratulations, Mr and Mrs Gill and thank you for allowing Cornish Brides to be part of your wedding day. We wish you a long and happy life together, filled with love and laughter. Couples planning their big day can save up to 75% off the average cost of a wedding by following some simple DIY steps, according to Laura Strutt, author of the DIY Wedding Manual. That’s what Laura saved on her own wedding and she is now sharing her practical advice and tips with a new easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide that could leave you quids in! This year, the average cost of a wedding is expected to drop by more than 7% to £17,853, suggesting that more couples are abandoning the big-budget blowout in favour of a more personal and less costly celebration. With this in mind, Laura has harnessed her personal, home-spun approach to help couples create a completely unique day, armed with little more than £5,000, some inspiration and a few crafty supplies. The DIY Wedding Manual is full of creative suggestions, money-saving tips and inspirational ideas, including how to make your own full-length veil, DIY top table and centrepiece decorations and completely unique, home-made wedding stationery. As Laura says: “It’s easy to get carried away trying to create the perfect day and whilst bespoke weddings are still top of the agenda for some couples, they can come in at an eye-watering cost. Even if handmade bunting isn’t for you, becoming savvy at each stage of the process will help your budget stretch further.” Laura’s aim is to guide couples through each stage of the wedding planning process in a simple, comprehensive and fun way that even the most novice DIYers will be able to follow. www.haynes.co.uk

FIVE STEPS TO

s s e n i p p a H

Cornish Brides ‘best friend’, Carley Wetting, takes you on a journey to find happiness!

As anyone who has ever read one of my columns will know, I do consider myself to be something of an authority on marriage. Not through experience, you understand for I am a confirmed spinster (is it just me who thinks that is the most awful word in the English language?) No, my experience is drawn from observation - I am a serial observer of people, plus everyone else I know is married or getting married, so I have spent an awful lot of time listening to other people plan their wedding, talk about their wedding and ultimately, I have gone to their wedding, so I feel I know as much about it as they do!

Sorry, but I am just going to digress slightly and go back to that word. Unmarried men are referred to as bachelors, which conjures up a picture of a young, sexy and virile man who works hard and plays hard and has the world at his feet. Unmarried women are called spinsters, which seems to suggest a somewhat old, sad and lonely person - someone who life has, perhaps, passed by. So unfair! Anyway, back to my story. As I say, I have spent many a long evening listening to my numerous friends talking about their impending nuptials. I have traipsed around endless bridal boutiques while my girlfriends try on upteen versions of the same dress. I have endured sympathetic looks from bridal boutique owners who clearly feel I am destined to always ‘be the bridesmaid’ and I have sunk many a bottle of wine while consoling my friends after they have had a falling out with their boyfriend/fiancé all the while knowing full well that while I will be nursing the mother of all headaches in the morning, they will be on the ‘phone to their loved one making up and promising never to argue again! That is another of life’s conundrums that always leave me baffled. Couples never seem to just have a row; they split up. If I had a pound for every time

someone has said to me: ‘did you know they’ve split up?’ I would be a very rich woman by now. My stock answer is: ‘Oh no, really?’ but what I truly want to say is: ‘Oh don’t be so ridiculous, they’ve just had a row. By tomorrow, they won’t even remember what it was about and they’ll be back to their usual starry-eyed selves’. Because you see, it is human nature to argue; we all do it and for the most part, we can’t help ourselves. Some of us don’t even know we’re doing it - or so I’ve been told! But I’m jumping ahead of myself here. My first step to happiness is that you actually have to meet someone. Now this can happen at any time in any place and often it happens when you least expect it. Sometimes it can be a chance encounter or it can be a fleeting moment that leaves you breathless. On the other hand, it can happen without you even realising and it can take quite a while for the penny to drop. But once it has happened and you’ve both acknowledged it, then you can safely say that you have achieved the first step to happiness. The second step comes when you start dating the person you’ve met. Does anyone actually say ‘dating’ any more? It seems quite an out-of-date expression, but apart from ‘going out with’ I can’t really think of any other alternatives, so I’ll stick with dating. Now dating is not to be confused in any way, shape or form with romance. Passion, yes - I will give you passion, but in my experience (yes, I have had some experience of dating) romance comes along quite a bit later. A date does not necessarily have to be a romantic candlelit dinner. It can be a takeaway and a couple of beers back at your place or, as seems quite popular these days, a date can be an outing you have with a group of people, not just the person you met in Step 1 above. But whatever guise it takes, dating is definitely the second step to happiness.

Cornish Brides : Autumn 2014

So this brings us nicely onto Step 3, which is arguing. Now I concede this might seem to be a rather strange step in the journey to happiness, but it is a necessary one, so bear with me. As we’ve already established, we all argue; there is no getting away with it, so you might as well get used to it. If you are ever going to find true happiness, then you have to know how to argue and when to argue. More importantly, you have to know how to deal with an argument, how to stop an argument and how to not let an argument get out of hand. In order to achieve this, you need to understand that men and women are completely different; think: ‘Men are from Mars; Women are from Venus’. John Gray hit the nail on the head with his now legendary and ultimately definitive relationship guide (recommended reading for any bride-to-be). You really can’t ask a man for his honest opinion and then take the ‘ump when he gives it to you. Likewise, there is absolutely no point whatsoever in asking a man to do more than one thing at a time. It’s a wellknown fact that men are simply incapable of multi-tasking and trying to do two things simultaneously will result in neither task being achieved to your satisfaction or at all. The best advice I can give you is to accept that arguments will happen, but don’t over-dramatise them. Accept them for what they are and realise that after the shouting and sulking (yes, women shout, men sulk) he will still love you and your little spat will not have made a jot of difference to the world at large, so just get over it and move on. Third step accomplished!

An engagement is seen as a couple’s announcement to the world (well, to their family and friends) that they are in love and intend to spend the rest of their lives together, with a marriage following shortly. However, I have been reading some rather interesting statistics that seem to suggest that a surprisingly high number of couples don’t actually view an engagement in quite this way. Almost one-third of couples get engaged because of the status it brings and, no doubt, the gifts that will be bestowed on them! A disturbingly high number of women want to get engaged just so they can sport a ring on the third finger of their left hand which they can show off at every opportunity, clearly believing that this enhances their standing in society. Now I know that is not what you think, so we shall move quickly on. Your engagement is the time that you plan your wedding and again, there is no limit on the time you are engaged, although my trusted reseach tells me that most couples are engaged for between 1.6 and 2.4 years, which seems fairly reasonable. So you are now safely on the final leg of your journey and your wedding preparations are progressing nicely. The arguments still come, although hopefully these are now few and far between and the romance that we touched on earlier has also now come firmly into play. You really do get a tingle in the pit of your stomach every time he comes through the door or whenever he calls you at work and although neither of you might admit it, there is nothing you like better than cosying up together on the couch with a bottle of wine and a shared bowl of popcorn, watching a re-run of a favourite movie. That’s romance. The passion will come and go and that’s fine, just as long as the romance is always there. So we have now arrived at our destination - the fifth and final step on the road to happiness. Your wedding day. But it isn’t just the day itself that completes your journey. Your wedding day is the first day of the rest of your life together and that is when you achieve happiness. Each day, your happiness will grow; you don’t have to think about it, you can’t plan it and you won’t have to work at it. As you grow together, so too will your happiness. Your fifth step - job done!

So, despite the arguments - or maybe because of them (afterall, making up is always such fun) you should now be making your way steadily and surely towards the fourth step of your journey; the engagement. Now there are no hard and fast rules as to when exactly in a relationship this will happen. Some couples plod along for years with no sign of an imminent betrothal. Others are sporting a ring within weeks or months of meeting. The national average timespan between Step 1 and Step 4 is 2.3 years, but there’s nothing to say that you can’t buck that trend. Now I’ve never been engaged, so I can’t say for certain whether there is a defining lightbulb moment in a relationship when you both instinctively know that you want to spend the rest of your lives together. I rather suspect there isn’t and without wishing to put too much of a dampener on it, I think it just sort of happens. There is no fanfare, no fireworks - you are just sitting there one evening watching another repeat on TV and before the final credits roll, you have decided to get engaged. Fourth step complete.

Cornish Brides : Autumn 2014

We all know that weddings don’t come cheap and it may well be that you simply don’t have enough in the budget to round things off with an exotic honeymoon to some far-flung corner of the globe. But don’t despair because you already live in one of the most stunningly beautiful places on the planet and with a little bit of planning and a smattering of imagination, you can turn a southwest honeymoon into something wonderfully romantic and unique. Caressed by the warm waters of the gulf stream, giving rise to towering palms and colourful cacti, a honeymoon in Devon, Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly will certainly feel as though you’ve ventured further afield. Add in our vast creamy beaches, clear blue seas and stunning coastal scenery and you could be anywhere in the world. A south-west honeymoon will certainly keep the cost down, avoid the hassle of flying and allow you to explore parts of the country that you have just never got around to seeing. There’s plenty of luxury and romance right here on your doorstep and Cornish Brides have cherry-picked some stunning home-honeymoon hot-spots, so toss that long-haul brochure in the bin and start planning your very own

South West Honeymoon! St Mawes Retreats offers five luxurious self-catering houses within Cornwall perfect for couples, extended families and family groups. Shellseekers is a fabulous two bedroom modern house with views to the water, ideally situated with private parking in the centre of the picturesque village and tranquil harbour of St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula. Shellseekers is the perfect house for honeymooning couples who enjoy luxurious, modern, high quality surroundings. It isn’t just the uber luxurious and contemporary design and decor that makes a honeymoon at Shellseekers special, it’s the added luxuries you would normally only expect when you stay in a boutique hotel. On arrival honeymooners receive a bottle of Champagne to celebrate their special occasion and they can enjoy freshly prepared meals which can be pre-ordered by a private chef and delivered each day to enjoy on the balcony dining area. If couples enjoy the dining experience but can’t bring themselves to leave the luxury and comfort of Shellseekers, then a personal chef can come and cook a celebration luncheon, dinner or barbecue in the relaxed surroundings of the house. Couples can even enjoy in-house spa treatments which include beauty and body treatments for both men and women in the privacy of the house. With a dedicated concierge service St Mawes Retreats go that extra mile to help ensure honeymooners enjoy a magical and memorable stay. There is even the option of your own private powerboat! www.stmawesretreats.co.uk

Sitting in the sheltered and sunny spot of Devon’s Babbacombe Bay, The Cary Arms is a charming boutique-style inn located on the beach. Eight sea-facing luxurious guest rooms offer sweeping views from their terraced balconies of the majestic rugged bay ensuring guests enjoy the pleasures of a delightful seaside escape. A further four converted chic and contemporary fishermen’s cottages are available, each boasting fabulous sea views. Newly-weds can recharge their batteries within the hotel’s spa room by enjoying a selection of aromatic and holistic treatments from Parisian spa and skincare brand Yon-Ka. Feeling suitably relaxed, dine on superb Devon beef, Lyme Bay lobster and line caught seafood on the sunkissed terrace or the prized Captain’s Table. Couples looking for a totally unique outdoor seaside experience will love The Cary Arms. ‘Floating’ on the landscaped terrace, meters above the lapping water and beach below and with its far-reaching coastal views across Lyme Bay, a glass sphere ‘Pod’ provides couples with a honeymoon scene never to be forgotten. With plenty of coastal character and echoes of New England, international designer Kathleen Fraser has captured the flavour of effortless seaside living making The Cary - a hugely popular wedding and honeymoon destination. www.caryarms.co.uk

if you’re serious about getting married, there is no other place to go kingsley village SEPTEMBER 7

NOVEMBER 2

FEBRUARY 1

www.cornishbrides.co.uk

and finally ... One of the most amazing things about working at Cornish Brides is that we get to visit the most stunning hotels and recently, we were lucky enough to be invited to dine and stay at the Arundell Arms Hotel in Lifton.

So, it’s time to put another issue of Cornish Brides to bed and, as usual, its been great fun pulling it all together. The bridal industry is constantly changing and there are new companies coming along every week with new ideas, new concepts and new products. Some will be around for a long time; others will have their day and then disappear, but we will continue to do our best to bring you news of everything that is going on in the world of weddings. It’s what we do best and it’s what we love to do, so be assured if it’s happening out there somewhere, we will find it and bring it to you! Over the coming months, we will be taking a much closer look at real weddings and we may start to feature some from next year. We will certainly be opening some new albums on Facebook and Pinterest, though, so if you are getting married anytime soon, why not get in touch and let us know all about it. Then after the event,

Steeped in history, the Arundell Arms is a 300 year old coaching inn that is a perfect wedding venue catering for up to 100 guests. It has a great location just minutes off the A30 and is set in splendid landscaped gardens and with glorious views of the Devon countryside. With its own private lake - which makes an ideal backdrop for photos - the hotel boasts an elegant drawing room leading onto a terraced garden, spacious bar, sophisticated restaurant and 21 delightful bedrooms.

we will contact your photographer and get a selection of fabulous images and showcase your wedding to the world. Next year is the 15 year anniversary of Cornish Brides and we have lots of plans in the pipeline for the magazine and loads inlcuding ideas for new features, which we are really excited about. We will also be looking to expand our Cornish Brides Shows in 2015 and want to bring you the very best bridal businesses in the south west. We are entering a really exciting phase here at CBHQ and we want you to be part of it. So, do ensure you get your copy of Cornish Brides right up until the date of your wedding and make sure you come along to our Cornish Brides Shows as often as you can. Enjoy the rest of the summer and if you are getting married during the next couple of months, we just want to say a big ‘thank you’ for reading Cornish Brides magazine and we wish you a lifetime of health, wealth and happiness. For those of you whose wedding is a little further ahead, the next issue of Cornish Brides will be out at the end of October and we look forward to seeing you at a Cornish Brides Show very soon.

Head Chef, Steven Pidgeon - who is one of only eighty chefs in the country elected as a Master Chef of Great Britain - will prepare a bespoke menu for your wedding breakfast and reception and you will also enjoy the services of a dedicated wedding co-ordinator to help you plan your perfect day.
