Cornish Issue 38/2015
Be Inspired As the editor of a successful bridal magazine, I am often asked what is the most important aspect of a wedding and to be perfectly honest, that is an impossible question to answer. Every single bride is unique and each will have her own thoughts and ideas about how she wants her wedding to be. For some, choosing the right venue is vital whilst others are more concerned with their dress and how they will look on the day. Some couples think their guests will make or break their celebrations, so they spend a lot of time deciding who they will invite and some brides put a lot of emphasis on the ‘incidentals’ such as their flowers, cake and the entertainment they will have on the day. So, if I was really pushed into giving my opinion as to what is the most important thing about a wedding, I would have to say ... inspiration. You will meet a lot of these people at a Cornish Brides Organising your wedding can be daunting; there is a lot to think about and before you really start to make decisions and book certain things, you need to be inspired. Today’s world of weddings is vast - there is a massive amount to choose from and pretty much anything can be arranged to organised. A bride is limited only by her imagination and budget. So there is much to be said for taking some time to check out all your options and all the wonderful

By creating beautiful flowers and making exquisite jewellery, talented Kyla Sidwell seems to have hit on a winning combination, especially if these stunning tiaras are anything to go by. Roamer Rose is a new mobile and online bridal business that Kyla is busy setting up here in Cornwall and while she is now concentrating on the floristry side of the business, her initial bridal jewellery collection has been launched with two more collections soon to be added to her new website. The 'Coastal Collection' will be available this summer and 'Winter Whites' will launch just before Christmas - both of which reflect on the flower theme. Prior to relocating to Cornwall, Kyla owned her own Bridal Couture House in Lancashire for over 7 years catering for brides with her avant-garde couture gowns, jewellery and bespoke floristry. This is her first jewellery collection for many years and initial reactions from brides have been very positive. All pieces are personally hand-made and each individual piece is named after one of novelist Thomas Hardy’s unique female characters. Personalised designs can be incorporated into any chosen flowers (fresh, dried, silk or bejewelled) by the bride and her attendants.
This November marks the 30 year anniversary of Jane Louise Fashions, a family run business in Liskeard. With a passion for ladies-wear, the boutique has built up an enviable reputation, but over the last couple of years, they have gradually moved away from high street fashions to become specialists in occasion-wear. It was a big decision for owner, Jane Fisher, and a lot of hard work as it meant totally re-branding the business, but it’s a decision she is glad they undertook. This spring/summer, they have taken on 7 new suppliers in mother of the bride/groom outfits and most of these designers are totally exclusive to Jane Louise; these ranges won't be found in any other outlet in Cornwall, so customers can be sure they are purchasing something very special and unique. Alongside the wedding outfits, there is a vast range of prom, evening wear and cocktail dresses - suitable for dinner dances, cruises and special events, as well as flower girl dresses, page boy outfits and bridesmaids’ dresses and a small, but stunning selection of bridalwear. There is also a massive choice of accessories, including hats, fascinators, shoes, bags, jewellery and hair accessories ... everything, in fact, to complete your outfit from head to toe. The shop is located in the town centre of Liskeard, just 5 minutes off the A38 and Jane and her team offer a friendly service in a very relaxed atmosphere because they know how important it is for their customers to leave feeling a million dollars whilst still enjoying a fun shopping experience. Private appointments can be arranged if customers prefer and Jane tells us that it is usually best to call and make an appointment if you want to view the full bridalwear range. With a large selection of dresses in stock, catering for all sizes (6-26) and budgets - dresses start from £35 and mother of the bride/groom outfits are available from jut £95, Jane Louise also offer an easy payment plan so you can choose your outfit in advance and pay in instalments to suit your budget. www.janelouisecornwall.co.uk

When chocolate looks too good to eat ... Who doesn’t love chocolate? This gorgeous range of handmade chocolates from Delice takes the art of chocolate making to a whole new level. When chocolates look this good, it is almost a shame to eat them, but wouldn’t they just blow your guests away if they were served with coffee at the end of your wedding breakfast or as part of a reception Sweetie Table? Or failing that, how about treating yourself to a box ... just because you can! www.delice-sweets.com
ARE YOU A LOBSTER OR A FROG? You can never have too many mugs, so here are a few that you should definitely add to your collection! How adorable is this fairytale princess kissing a frog? Each mug can be customised to create a fun momento of your happy day. The princess can be personalised with different hair colours, styles and skin tone and the frog can be wearing his favourite shirt or no shirt at all! The mugs also carry the message ‘Happily Ever After' followed by the couple's names, a message and the date to celebrate a marriage, engagement, anniversary or any special occasion. Or how about this cute ‘You're My Lobster' mug for that special person in your life? Guaranteed to raise a smile each time it's used for a cuppa, the lobster that wraps around the mug can be in pink or blue with the recipient's name added to make it entirely personal.
Each mug is individually hand printed, dishwasher safe and packed in a smash proof box. www.afewhometruths.co.uk
Show Your Love If you’re looking for a gift for that special man in your life, we suggest these personalised cufflinks by Chambers & Beau. Made from sterling silver with a choice of cord colours, the cufflinks come in two shapes and can be personalised with words of your choice - names, a special date or a personalised message of love (up to 20 characters on each cufflink). All text is hand-stamped, deliberately uneven and slightly quirky, adding to the character of the item. www.chambersandbeau.com

The old restaurant has been extended back into an area which was recently part of the kitchen and can now accommodate up to 92 diners with ease and comfort, along with a further 50 in the sophisticated new bar. dream photos Paul Keppel This is one of my favourite images and features on the banner of my home page. It was actually a very sunny day,, but when we arrived at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay there was a huge storm cloud passing on the horizon. I thought this would make for a dramatic image as I could expose for the storm and use off camera flash to make Ben and Morwenna really pop out of the image. The effect was stunning and we were all delighted with the result. www.paulkeppel.co.uk
Grant Lampard A few days before this wedding, I remembered it was bluebell season and I thought it would be a great opportunity for a lovely photo. The bride, Chantelle was 6 months pregnant at the time, so I knew a long walk in the woods looking for bluebells wouldn't be an option. Luckily, I stumbled across Enys Gardens, half a mile from the church and both Chantelle and Clive loved the idea. A kind volunteer drove us right into the estate and we were able to get some beautiful shots. www.grantlampardphotography.com
Ron Bushell The wedding of Kaleigh and Jai is a favourite of ours and gave us so much pleasure to photograph. The bride and groom wanted a country fete theme and a relaxed atmosphere which they achieved perfectly. It was a fun day, but we particularly enjoyed a few quiet moments with the bride and groom strolling through the nearby woods. As the wedding had a slightly quirky feel, we wanted to do something a little different with a few of the images. With this one, we used sepia and a little colour popping with a small amount of vignetting to give a slightly vintage feel, which I really like and the bride loved! www.ronbushellphotography.co.uk
Toby Lowe I love the intimacy of this shot and what makes the image all the more striking is that it is completely unposed. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time as Karl lent over to give his new bride, Caroline a kiss. It's photos like this that are the reason I love being a wedding photographer. www.tobylowephotography.co.uk
Victoria Walker After Nina and Jon’s wedding at the Polurrian Bay Hotel we went down to Mullion Cove for some photos in the pretty harbour. Because Nina had put so much love and time into designing her dream wedding dress alongside designer Mishi May, it was important to get some great images of her really enjoying her dress and this is one of my favourites. www.victoriawalkerphotographry.co.uk
Dan Lilley The reason I like this photo so much is because the day did not start off great, it was a very gloomy day with lots of dark clouds. But Becci and Nick didn’t let this stop them having an amazing day and about a hour before I was due to leave, we had this amazing sunset which was just the perfect end to a perfect day! www.facebook.com/DanLilleyPhotographer
Ed Matthews This image was taken in March and on the way from Gunnislake Church to the reception venue, Abi and Ross wanted to stop off at Colliford Lake for some photos. I love this one because whilst I feel it is technically good and exposed well, capturing the dramatic sky, it was what happened prior to the picture and out of shot that makes it so special. Despite looking like a gorgeous Spring day, it was incredibly cold and windy. Literally thirty seconds before the shot was taken, the bride was wrapped in a large fleece to keep her warm whilst we quickly got things ready. I had the driver of the wedding car holding an off camera flash, to ensure Abi and Ross were properly exposed and just out of frame, someone else is holding a reflector and wrapping Abi in the ‘oh so fetching’ fleece between shots! Overall though, we were happy with this picture and were really glad to work with a gorgeous couple who were prepared to go that extra mile to ensure we got the shot they wanted. www.imagediary.co.uk

Whilst it may be traditional to choose pearls for your wedding day, there is nothing wrong with throwing away the rule book and opting for some funky pieces that can actually complement a delicate wedding gown to perfection. We really love these stunning earrings from Coco’s Liberty, the contemporary jewellery line by Swedish born designer, Elina Bergert. Each piece of jewellery is lovingly handmade at Elina’s London studio with the focus being on clean, uncluttered lines, geometric formations and subtle textures with an eclectic take on classic style. www.cocosliberty.com

So how much thought have you put into the wine you and your guests will drink on your wedding day? Yannick Loué owner of wine business Le Vignoble, based in the Royal William Yard, Plymouth, shares his advice on how to choose wines to complement your very special day.
e n i W t c e f r e P e h t . . g . n g i y n i r d r a d e M W t c e f r e P e h t h t i w
Wine and food matching When choosing a wine to complement your menu, the main thing is to ensure that the wine does not overpower the food, nor the food overpower the wine. With so many guests and tastes to please, I advise choosing a wine with a mid range of flavours as this is more likely to please the most people. Do not choose a wine that is too dry, as this will make your guests thirsty. If you can take wines to your menu tasting then do so, as you can then see how the flavours of the wine and food balance and complement each other.
Wines for different seasons For winter weddings, choose rich and bold wines to warm your guests up. Summer weddings are all about the rosé; this wine is very underrated and typically not chosen for weddings, but I think a fruity pink is perfect for a summer celebration and your female guests, in particular, will appreciate it. In the hot summer months, keep the level of alcohol low, as dehydrated guests drinking for hours with a high alcohol drink is a recipe for disaster. Think outside of the box and make your wedding slightly different, some reds, for example are delightful served chilled on a hot day.
How to personalise your wine choice Choosing wines that reflect the happy couple is a lovely touch and this is something your guests will definitely notice. With hundreds of countries, new and old world, producing fantastic quality wines, your choices can reflect anything from the nationalities of the couple, to any special holidays and memories made together in different countries. Also, don’t be ashamed to choose a different wine for the top table; wanting to spoil your nearest and dearest on your special day is completely acceptable and it is highly unlikely that your other guests will even notice! Choose an easy drinking, good quality, yet reasonable wine for your guests and treat yourself to something special.
Bottles, Magnums, Jeroboams and Barrels The tradition in France is to stock up with larger formats of wine for weddings and special occasions. Bought this way, the wine is more likely to be better quality and it will have aged better. Big bottles are also lovely as a keepsake of your day, especially when your guests have signed them. Barrels are also a good price for the quality of wine inside them. We stock a range of artistic barrels from the Languedoc, France, which work out at the same price as an average bottle in the supermarket, yet so much better. Put a couple of these in the middle of your tables and your guests will be happy for hours.
Where to buy quality wines and get reliable advice When choosing your wine, don’t be afraid to ask for advice and try many wines before you make your final decision. When customers come to Le Vignoble looking to buy wines for their wedding, we always sit down for an evening tasting and discuss the different options with the bride, groom and family. Don’t rush the decision of what to drink on your special day; your wine deserves as much thought as your menus. Explore all the options and decide what else can wine bring to your wedding.

It’s easy to let all this wedding planning get the better of you and if you’re not careful, you could find that what should be the happiest time of your life causes a massive rift between you.
DON’T LET YOUR
WEDDING TEAR YOU APART Cornish Brides best friend Carley Wetting, asks:
Are you prepared to risk all just for one day?
You remember the day he slipped that ring on your finger and asked you to marry him? You gazed into his eyes as tears started to fill yours and you managed a breathless ‘yes, of course I will’. In that instant, you knew beyond any shadow of a doubt that you would be together for the rest of your lives; impossibly happy and in complete and utter harmony with each other. OK, fast forward a couple of months, perhaps a year, depending on the length of your engagement and let’s skip to the wedding planning stages of your relationship. So, how are things going and, more importantly, how is your relationship holding up? Hopefully, you can reply in all honesty that things have never been better and planning your wedding has been a joy, which has really proved how ‘in tune’ you are and how absolutely perfect you are for each other. With any luck, every suggestion you have made has been met with a nod of approval and every suggestion he has made has made you catch your breath (in a good way) and sigh with pleasure. But what if and it may be a very big if - things have not 116
Cornish Brides
been quite as harmonious as you had hoped and that your idea of the perfect wedding has not quite matched up to his idea of a perfect wedding? Now I don’t think that it will come as any surprise to anyone if I make the point that when it comes to weddings, men and women generally see things in a somewhat different light. That is not to say that a man is not as committed to the wedding or looking forward to being married, but let’s be honest, a wedding day for most women is the chance to dress up, look beautiful and be the centre of attention and I’m guessing that most men don’t feel the same way! When John Gray wrote his now classic book, ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ some 23 years ago, he explored the fundamental differences between the genders, drawing on the premise that the most common relationship problems between men and women are a result of basic psychological differences akin to the two genders originating from their own very distinct planet. The same metaphor can be
used when examining the ways men and women view marriage and, in particular, the planning stages. A recent survey showed that 60% of couples admitted they had fallen out at some stage during the planning process for their wedding with one in six saying they’d had a ‘major bust-up’ with their partner. The most common cause of dissent amongst warring couples is, without any shadow of a doubt (and perhaps not surprisingly) family orientated; mainly in trying to appease members of their own family, sometimes to the detriment of their partner’s family. Compiling the guest list was also cited as a popular cause for a row with 25% of couples coming to blows over budget. So, what’s the difference between being a girlfriend and being a fiancée? There is no denying or getting away from the fact that once you have announced your engagement, there are definitely initial discussions to be had and decisions to be made as to the whens, wheres, whos and hows. But once you have made these initial
plans, you may well find yourself with time on your hands, again depending on the length of your planned engagement. For a man, there is nothing more to be said, once he has agreed the date and the venue. Everything else can be put on a back burner and dealt with ‘as and when’. For a woman, however, this is just the start of a very long process that can become allconsuming. It’s all systems go as you move swiftly into wedding over-drive or should that be over-kill? Because it is entirely possible that you could become a wedding bore and if you do start to see your friends and family glazing over as you reach for your wedding scrapbook or mood-board for the third time in as many minutes, then you may need to re-think your attitude. What you need to work out is how you can maintain a harmonious and contented relationship throughout the wedding planning process. Of course, some might say ‘just agree with everything he/she wants’ if only to keep the peace and have an easy life, but is that the right thing to do and at the end of the day, could that attitude end up causing resentment later on? The sensible response is to talk through your options and explore all the opportunities that are available to you, but we all know that’s not going to happen! So the first thing you need to do is tame that inner princess. We all know this wedding is all about you and you’ve been dreaming of it for years, but keep it real and don’t get too carried away with everything. You also need to confront the elephant in the room and as much as you’d like to pretend that everything in the garden is rosy, there are bound to be issues that need discussing, so don’t shy away from them, because these things have an annoying habit of raising their heads at the most inopportune moments. If you really can’t stand his best mate and would prefer it if he was back-packing around Outer Mongolia at the time of your wedding, then say so (well, perhaps not in those exact words) and address the matter before it becomes a problem. The next thing to do is to keep your man in the loop about everything, even if he does appear to be more interested in what’s in the paper or on TV. If you tell him, he can’t turn around later and feign ignorance and let’s be fair, it’s not your fault if he wasn’t listening at the time. Besides, you might actually be surprised when he does show interest and you never know, he might even
come up with a good idea or two, so throw a few crumbs his way and give him a couple of projects to organise - although nothing too important, of course!
My fiance and I are having a little disagreement. What I want is a big church wedding with bridesmaids and flowers and a no-expense-spared reception;
Another way to keep the peace is to create a ‘wedding free zone’. This can either be a specific room in your house or a particular time of the day. For example, resolve not to speak about the wedding while you’re in bed or while you’re eating - either at home or if you’re dining out - or exclude all marriage matters between the hours of 8pm and midnight or all day on Sunday - set some boundaires and stick to them. Setting targets is another good way to maintain a healthy wedding/normal life balance. Agree that you will complete the guest list by lunchtime on Saturday and if you achieve it, you’ll go out for a late lunch together to celebrate or encourage your fiance to choose the outfits he wants for himself and his best man before he watches
what he wants is to break off our engagement. Sally Poplin
If you really think long and hard about things, it is not too difficult to come up with a workable solution to most problems, so don’t make any rushed decisions and just let things work themselves out in the fullness of time. They invariably will so it’s definitely not worth arguing or falling out over things. Budgets can be difficult because your dream wedding may well cost far more than your budget will allow, so again, a little bit of thought and planning is called for. In the first instance, make two lists; one of all the things you absolutely must have and simply won’t get married without. The second should contain the things that you would like, but accept you might not be able to have. You do need to be realistic when compiling these lists and do them together. Of course if you’re really clever, you will have worked out your lists before you sit down with your man and you will have a couple of aces up your sleeve. For example, if you are really not bothered one way or another about say, a chocolate fountain, put it on your ‘must have’ list. That way, when it comes down to some seriously hard negotiation, you can always make the supreme sacrifice of giving it up in return for something being crossed off his ‘must have’ list. Do you see where I’m coming from here? Just don’t push your luck too far, though, or the plan could backfire on you - big time!
the football on the pretext that you will leave him and his can of beer in complete and utter peace for the entire 90 minutes if he does (you don’t always have to stick to your end of the bargain, that’s a woman’s perogative and he will know that anyway). Pleasing every member of his and your family is a more tricky situation and for some of you, kid gloves will be needed. If tact and diplomacy are not on your ‘my strong points’ list, then perhaps steer well clear of being the one to make the decisions and engage in some feminine wiles by appearing to let others make the decisions, which you, of course, are more than happy to go along with. What everyone else won’t realise is that the decision was yours all along, you just let others think they were making it!
Of course, you should know each other well enough to know what is important and what really doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, we are talking about one day in your life and as long as you are both there and are surrounded by the people who you both love and cherish, your wedding will be perfect. It is up to you to not allow yourselves to get bogged down by things which probably won’t make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Organising a wedding is stressful enough without allowing it to come between the two of you in a big way. You want to start married life in complete and harmonious bliss, so make sure the planning process is smooth and harmonious as well! Cornish Brides

Just hours before going to print, we received word that Coastal Bridal of Mevagissey are relocating into the centre of the town. The move to new and larger premises will ensure that the whole bridal experience can be enjoyed even more by brides planning their perfect day. The boutique will now be able to offer even more choice of bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns as well as a vast selection of accessories and locally crafted jewellery. As the exclsuive Cornish stockist of Papa Michel Bridal, plus other names such as Victoria Kay, Coastal Bridal can offer classically elegant or stylish sophistication and can cater for all tastes and budgets. To celebrate their move, Coastal Bridal are hosting an Opening Weekend on August 1-2 between 11am and 6pm daily and look forward to welcoming everyone for Pimms and bubbly. This will be the perfect opportunity to view the stunning collections and maybe take advantage of some great opening offers. You can find the new boutique at 4 St Georges Square in Mevagissey. www.coastalbridal.co.uk
