A
research based freefall into the real and theoretical urbanism and architecture defining contemporary Chicago in a global context as a basis for the development of next scenarios for a future metropolis.
Introduction
P
ost-industrialization, obsolete and new economies, political and demographic flux, environmental stress, disruptive technological innovation - pose significant challenges to the traditional urban development and create opportunities for new paradigms and processes of the city. Urbanism, landscape and architecture are evolving new cross-disciplinary approaches responding to the specific demands and potentials of these emerging conditions. In these models the urban can be connected to local, regional, environmental and global scales and understood as a dynamic process rather than static project. Design process and criteria tend towards performative as much as formal work.

Chicago is the site and subject for this urban laboratory.
Method
P
ast successes and failures, real and theoretical, inform understanding of the development of the American city as disruptive rather than smooth, and a basis for constructing the future.
In order to develop a common critical background for the Studio we will analyze and deconstruct milestones in the evolution of “Chicagoland,� with a particular focus on post 1970 transformations and mutations that have led to present urban state -the Now. Key corollary precedents and global approaches will be overviewed and discussed. Integral to the Studio is a collaborative approach. Students will engage together in the development of research material, critical concepts and design projects, and work with the instructor to refine goals.

After the first skyscraper was established in 1885 at Chicago, Chicago played prominent role in the development of skyscraper. One organizational element of Chicago is the ‘Ward.’ Wards are created for the purpose of governmental representation for the citizens of Chicago. The size and shape of the ward boundaries are defined by population quantities as well as major built infrastructure, such as highways and railroad tracks. Through the study of these wards, conclusions can be made of the current and future trends. The most vital of these trends is the population change in these various sectors. The population quantities seem to be declining in the south due to minimizing commercial influence as well as the disassemblage of manufacturing businesses. These populations are moving north to the city center as well as west to the suburbs. The central sectors of Chicago are remaining constant with minimal turnaround of inhabitant counts. The north sectors are slightly increasing in population, especially towards the lake front. Due to such trends, it can be concluded that segregational and communal differences are increasing, resulting in ‘breaks’ within the landscape of the city. It is crucial that future city planning minimize these differences and look to harmonize the overall city, especially in terms of residences, commercials and entertainment.

Towards a Definition
In order to reach some sort of an explanation of the existence of the suburbs, two were dissected. Riverside, a suburb close to the border of the city of Chicago, was the first planned suburb in the United States, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead as an organic haven within the city. Huntley, an expansive suburb located in the far northwest area of the greater Chicagoland area, was an agricultural based suburb until its transformation in 1988. In ten years, its population rose from 5,000 to 20,000 people. It is the fastest growing surbub in the US.

Because the suburbs are continuously expanding, they are becoming cities within themselves. The connections from suburb to suburb are now crucial. This change can be seen with the implementation of new inter-suburban Metra lines. The city center is now slowly being distributed throughout the various expanding suburban towns and villages. Public transportation ridership is increasing slowly, and the city of Chicago is attempting to accomodate all of its commuters.

The function of park district not only remain as the provider of public green space along the lake shore but it also function as a boundary of semi-circled region. Lake shore, park boulevard, and the boarder of Chicago are the three layers which enable the city to become a Garden City. A fragmentation exists between the Bronzeville neighborhood and the prominent Chicago lakeside, predominantly towards the south. The infrastructure, the Metra trains and Lakeshore Drive, make it a particularly noisy and undesireable site to occupy. Thus, it stands relatively empty. The proposal to revive the activate this lakeside once again is through the insertion of a tech-based community and economy. Chicago is catching up with the leaders of the tech ecosystems, and why not extend its boundaries further from the loop towards the south? The development of a third city will take place as this new type of neighborhood begins to expand and flourish.

The defragmentation of the typical tech company headquarters is taking place in the 21st century: this is the future of tech. Why stop there? This type of open-space, under-one-roof organization can be used to literally connect the neighborhood to the lake, and to the this newly established tech economy. In order from top to bottom: Cornell University at Roosevelt Island; Google Headquarters; the new Facebook Headquarters; the new Apple Headquarters.
The site is tough: disconnected, isolated, empty, and fragmented. The focus is set on not only reworking the former site of the Michael Reese Hospital complex, but the extent of 29th street to the green line train as well. The site is broken down into its simplest elements, bit by bit, in order to be reassembled in the most beneficial and convenient methods.

The building becomes the method of circulation for both private and public. For the public, it lifts up and over into the lake, emulating the praries and parks defining the new 29th street. a new centrality? The city has become an accelerated growing urban form within the modern world. Technology, information, data and economical industry are leading the way for the future, with centrality playing a dominant role in its success. Chicago has, is and will be one of these centralities that must adapt and grow with the fast pace development of the world. The loop is a prime example of an urban centrality that functions for the city, providing business, entertainment and political functions for Chicago. For this reason, it is crucial that the loop retains these functions in the future, while having the capability of introducing a new strata/level of supporting functions. Utilizing the existing infrastructure of the loop, along with this sector’s mixed use occupancy, we can inject new programs into this centrality that will support the cities growth. With the grade strata of the loop being already dominated with necessary programs, one crucial solution is to develop a new strata. This new level will utilize the elevated EL tracks as the origin of these new programs. The proposed design will inject itself atop the public transportation lines of the loop, and will provide a new public circulation that supports the implemented of new technological / informational / research based programs within the city. These new programmatic injections will be preliminarily implemented within the existing building infrastructure with communications between all of these buildings being provided by the new elevated tech park. The new elevated loop will be the incubator of technology and progress for the city of Chicago, along with being open to the public. Corporations, entrepreneurs and research based programs will inhabit this new strata for the support of further development of Chicago.

Union Stock Yard was the meatpacking district in Chicago more than a century. This district enabled Chicago to become center for the American meatpacking industry for dacades. However as the 21st century approached the district had to lose its prosperity and became a industrial corridor. The proposal sggest this district to become revitalized through new form of ‘packing’. Instead of meatpacking, the proposal suggests to set up a system which does knowledge-packing. Three mixed use building right on the waterfront of the Chicago River,like a canyon in the city. So I hope that, by incorporating these changes, this area would become a newly developed business core in the River North neighborhood. Not only it would strengthen the public image of the sector, but it also revitalize the whole area by bring more businesses (and revenue) in.

So I would like to design a small “city” on top of an archipelago formed by the old MONTGOMERY WARD office building(Groupon HQs location), a new mixed income housing and a new office building. The “city” is a new core in relation to the downtown loop.

My site is along with the chicago river, , this area is suitable for IT real-estate because of its prime location (it is located very closely to public transportation), its close proximity to a number of existing IT companies (Group-on, Motorola, Google), and general closeness to downtown (I believe that companies in general should be closer together in order to create and maintain a hybrid network with each other, thus forming a “cloud” environment). Thus this area is good for intervention in order to increase the value of industry and technology in the overall area.
