Welcome to our Spring Newsletter.

Hopefully the wet and wild weather is now behind us and we can look forward to the promise of better summers!

Thank you to all of you who continue to support our two adult hospices. Your help means that we have been able to offer specialist palliative care for patients with life limiting conditions and provide support to their families at the most difficult of times.

I am pleased to be able to report that the major refurbishment of Mount Edgcumbe hospice is nearing completion. The hospice will fully reopen in May with much improved patient facilities and a revitalised infrastructure. My thanks to all the patients, families, staff and volunteers who have borne with the inevitable disruption during the works.

Time seems to have flown at St Julia’s Hospice since we built the new annex providing much needed extra space and increasing the available beds from 8 to 12.

New staff have been welcomed and are settling in to offer our high standards of care to more patients than ever before. It’s

15 years since the hospice building was originally opened and the service moved from a ward within St Michael’s Hospital.

The refurbishment of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice is nearing completion, with the final works to be complete by the end of April.

Here is a selection of photos to give you a ‘virtual tour’ of the hospice’s new look.

This refurbishment has been funded from grants from NHS England, Charitable Trusts and a significant legacy that was bequeathed to Cornwall Hospice Care.

Prina Modhvadia and William Higham, two of our third year students interviewed students past and present about their experience with Cornwall Hospice Care.

Often people do not realise that there are many students working and learning in the hospice. There are a large range of students from nursing students to GP trainees. We had the opportunity to talk with a cross section of students and ask them about their time at the hospice and what they have learnt whilst there.

Owen Current Role: Foundation Year Doctor at Treliske Experience with the hospice: Owen spent time training at St Julia's during his 4th and 5th year at medical school.

How do you use your experiences in your current practice? "I come across many patients where there is a need to discuss palliative care.

Knowing that the hospice is there, and what they do for people enables me to explain these things to a patient in the hospital, and remove common misconceptions."

"The staff here are very knowledgeable on pain control, pharmacology and symptom relief.

We receive very little exposure to this in the hospital.

How did you feel about your placements at the hospice? "Initially I was nervous; I had never been to a hospice before. However it turned out to be a really good experience and I would go back again.

Do you think that all Medical students should be exposed to end of life care? Yes, definitely. As doctors we are going to be exposed to this in our time practising. All the staff at the hospice are very experienced at communicating with patients and their families at this very difficult time.

The staff have a way of interacting with patients that both respect the patient and puts their needs first.

This can be transferred to my general practice in the hospital.

5 Vacancies for Trustees We are seeking to appoint three new trustees to add to the existing skills of the Board. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall gove rnance and strategic direction of the hospices and developing the hospices aims, objec tives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guide lines. The Board is primarily concerned with the direction, policy and strategy. The day-to-day management is delegated to the Chief Executive and the Executive Team who report back to the Board. Applications are welcomed from candidates with an in-depth knowledge and experience gained at a senior executive or non-executive level particularly in the areas of retail, fundraising, marketing, media and law.

The Board meets six times a year and is supported by an experienced Executive Team. There are also a number of committees that meet regul arly.

Megan Current Role: 3rd Year nursing student at Plymouth University Experience with the hospice: Currently on her placement at Mount Edgcumbe What was the largest misconception you had before your time at the hospice? "I originally thought that people only used the hospice for end of life care. However, from being on placement I have learnt that many patients come in for a short period for symptom control."

What skills have you developed during your time at Mount Edgcumbe? "I got a lot of experience with drug rounds, syringe drivers and drawing up medications. These are all very relevant to my future practice as a nurse."

Helen Current Role: Specialist lymphoedema nurse at Mount Edgcumbe hospice Experience with the hospice: Was one of the first cohorts of student nurses at Mount Edgcumbe and then returned as a staff nurse to progress to her current role. She also now helps teach the medical students.

"If the hospice hadn't been willing to have me as a student, I might not be working here now" How does having students affect the hospice? "As the students are continually learning and asking questions the staff are kept on their toes. It ensures that we are up to date with the latest research and best practice. When I first started teaching it was very nerve-racking. Now I realise they are just as nervous as me and it has really improved my practice. "

All of the consultants at Cornwall Hospice Care are very involved in lots of aspects of student teaching in the Peninsula Medical School – The core of these is student placements at the hospice but we also provide seminars, clinical skills training, academic tutoring and special study units. Although it is sometimes a lot of work to coordinate everything to make the placements a useful and enjoyable experience for students, it is something I feel is really important and which I think benefits both students and the hospice.

All doctors will have to deal with difficult communication, challenging symptom control and death and dying in their work at some time and these things can be really hard to do, and do well. It is so important that we start opening up and teaching on these issues with students so that they

It's really satisfying for all of us to see students, perhaps initially a bit apprehensive at coming to the hospice, become so positive and excited about what we do and to see them learning, not only from the staff, but most of all from our patients. Patients also often enjoy seeing the students and having a chance to

talk about their experiences with eager listeners. (We always make it clear to patients that they don't have to see students, but many enjoy making a contribution to education).

I know how important experience as a student can be. When I trained, we had no clinical placements at all in hospices or palliative care. I was interested in the speciality and so set up my own placements during my elective. I loved the work and later chose to specialise in it. If that hospice hadn't been willing to have me as a student, I might not be working here now!

7 Retail Training We have been successful in developing a programme of training with Truro College, who have secured funding from the European Social Fund, to deliver structured training for all our staff which will help improve our business and build on the skills of our current staff.

Apprenticeships are also being offered, again with Truro College, in Retail, Warehousing, IT, Admin and Management.

Our Furniture Shops Located in Penryn, St Austell and Wadebridge, our furniture shops have been a successful venture for the charity. Penryn is approaching its 7 year anniversary and we are in the process of refitting and rebranding it at present.

The furniture shops stock donated products in conjunction with a range of new goods Worth a visit to see our diverse range.

News from the eBay team Remember the good old days before computers and x-boxes when we would sit at a table and play board games? We recently sold 1970’s haunted house game for £37, that was a blast from the past!

Bonhams auctioneers recently valued a collection of eight 19th century wooden dutch dolls for us and on their advice, we auctioned them on our site and made over £300.

The PenDelfin Cornish Prayer otherwise known as the PenDelfin “Corny” sold for £142 in March. This item was an early piece designed by PenDelfin founder Jean Walsmley Heap and was only produced by the pottery from 1962 until 1965.

New Goods We are very pleased to have enjoyed a very busy trading year and are always searching for new ‘Made in Cornwall’ and bespoke ranges to add to our collection.

This year we are pleased to have placed an order for our own unique Cornish Bears which will retail at £4.99 and are pleased to have purchased some novelty soap in the shape of a pasty and another in the St Piran’s flag design which has been made in Cornwall. Both these new products will appeal to locals and tourists alike.

The popular artist Emma Ball has designed another Cornish teatowel for us, along with new shopping and memo pads.

Works can be viewed on Friday 2nd May 10am - 5pm and prior to the auction on Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Doors open on the night at 7pm. Taking place throughout the spring, summer and autumn of 2014: an opportunity to visit uniquely different gardens varying in size and design that have been tended with love and care.

Visitors and gardening enthusiasts alike will be able to enjoy walks by lakes and through woodlands and meadows whilst admiring

the range of plants and stunning locations on offer.

Details on gardens included in the scheme are listed in our Open Gardens brochure, available now free of charge at most garden centres and tourist information centres, as well as at all Cornwall Hospice Care shops.

‘The Grand Day Out’ Family Fun Day will return to the Royal Cornwall Showground for its fourth year, with a special guest appearance from children's favourite Mike the Knight.

The day will offer a variety of events and attractions including Mike the Knight making personal appearances at intervals throughout

the day, Cornwall Sports Partnership 'Sports Active Zone', craft & produce fayre, car boot, fun fair, dog and car shows, refreshments, licensed bar and live music.

Something for all the family to enjoy, supporting Cornwall Hospice Care, providing specialist adult care to the Cornish community.

Sunday 1st June, 10am – 4pm A day packed full of some of the best local food and drink that Cornwall has to offer.

Stalls will be spread across three locations in The Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth and with nearly 30 different stalls to browse, there will be something for everyone to try.

Entrance is free and as well as the array of stalls there will also be live cookery demonstrations from the hotel’s chefs as well as presentations from some of the producers.

There will also be a fantastic raffle drawn on the day with prizes including one night hotel stays, meals out and delicious hampers.

This is a family fun day out in the beautiful setting of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, near Torpoint (PL10 1HZ) with 500 American and Classic cars to see, a craft fayre and stalls, a car boot fair, amusements, refreshments, a licensed bar and live music.

The house and gardens will be open too.

All proceeds from the event go to Cornwall Hospice Care and the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.

Entrance is free. Car parking is £5 or arrive

by Cremyll foot ferry from Plymouth.

Sunday 8th June, Swanpool Beach Reflections is a moving and supportive evening in remembrance of our loved ones. Gerbera flowers will carry individual messages in memory, with each flower being placed on a specially made wicker raft at Swanpool Beach, Falmouth.

We will gather on the beach from 5.30pm, then with gentle background music and words of poetry, we stand together as the sun goes down, watching the raft of flowers being taken out to sea with the tide and local rowers at approximately 6.40pm.

If you would like to take part in the evening, a tag can be obtained by contacting the fundraising office or downloading a form from our website. If you are not able to join us but would like to add your gerbera and message to the raft, please let us know and we will ensure your flower is included.

Make a splash for cash this summer at the first ever Swim Trelissick Open Water Swim in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care, supported

by Cornwall Sports Partnership, Cornwall Aquatic Action Group and the National Trust.

Swim Trelissick takes place in the beautiful grounds of Trelissick House, Feock nr Truro.

It is an ideal opportunity for everyone

from first timers to experienced open water swimmers to take on a choice of ½ mile or mile course.

All levels and abilities are welcome, aged 8 to 80+, registration is £15 for adults and £8 for children under 16 which includes entry to one of the choice of swims, a swimming cap and post event memento.

Spectators are welcome at this fun family event, supporting Cornwall Hospice Care, providing specialist adult care to the Cornish community.

Parachute Days In 2013 nearly 40 of our brave supporters completed tandem skydives in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care, raising more than £14,500.
