The campus is also home to the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences as well as Aultsville Theatre - a 700-seat theatre that attracts thousands of people to the area to attend dozens of shows throughout the year. As you move further east along the Waterfront Trail you will be find the NAV Centre, a sprawling convention centre overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The NAV Centre includes a great restaurant and pub, in addition to a fitness centre, indoor pool and spa to complement over 500 guest rooms. Downtown Cornwall

Downtown Cornwall: Cornwall’s revitalized downtown offers a growing mix of restaurants and retail stores, beautiful waterfront parks, museums and tree-lined neighbourhoods. Anchored by the landmark intersection of Pitt and Second, the Downtown is the historical heart of the region, tracing its roots back to 1784. Heritage homes, churches and buildings provide a clue as to what the city looked like a century ago. The Downtown is the go-to dining and shopping district for both locals and visitors alike. Have lunch on an outdoor patio and browse eclectic shops owned by the merchants who have sourced unique oneof-a-kind goods to fill their shelves. Drop by Cornwall Square, an indoor shopping mall featuring over 70 stores and stay for dinner at one of the many fine restaurants. Downtown is where you will find City Hall, the Cornwall Public Library and the Counties Administration Building. It is also the location of the Historic SDG Jail and Cornwall Community Museum as well as the Civic Complex, home of the Cornwall Colts and Cornwall Nationals hockey teams. Take a dip in the Aquatic Centre or try your luck throwing stones at the Cornwall Curling Club.

These attractions and more are just a short walk away from the sprawling Lamoureux Park which offers scenic views of the St. Lawrence River and Cornwall Island. In the park you will also find play structures, a splash pad and outdoor gym, in addition to well maintained walking paths along the riverside. Le Village: Le Village is a “main street” commercial district in the east end of Cornwall that runs along Montreal Road. It offers a diverse mix of professional offices, restaurants, retail stores and residential buildings. Le Village has strong connections to Cornwall’s textile mills past and Francophone heritage. The early nucleus of the Francophone community was Nativity Roman Catholic Church on Montreal Road which was built during 1887-92 to serve the many French Canadians. The area is in the midst of revitalization as new businesses set up shop. It is also an area with immediate access to the St. Lawrence River, attracting new residents as heritage textile mills are converted into condos. St. Lawrence College is located at the east end of Le Village. With surging

Brookdale: Brookdale Avenue offers all of the shopping, dining and accommodation experiences that modern travellers have come to expect from urban centres. The road connects Highway 138 and 401 in the North, to the Bridge to the USA in the south, while providing easy access to the central core and downtown districts. There is more than one charging station for electric vehicles along Brookdale, including a Tesla supercharger station, located at the Ramada. Park and explore the street while your car charges.

Le Village

On the “strip” you will find big box stores with national retailers that offer all of the popular brand names. Nestled amongst these giants are locally owned boutique shops that are sure to please the most discerning shopper. Brookdale is also home to the region’s largest selection of restaurants, featuring popular brands that offer a familiar dining experience. It is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat while travelling through the region. Located just off Brookdale is the Benson Centre, a multi-sport recreation facility offering 3 ice rinks, indoor field house and tennis court. The Benson Centre welcomes dozens of tournaments throughout the year and offers ample viewing areas so that you can catch all of the action. Brookdale is a great gateway to the rest of Cornwall, including the St. Lawrence River and Waterfront Trail. It connects the city to Cornwall Island and the Mohawk First Nation of Akwesasne. From there, travellers can connect to New York State.

Dining Fine Dining Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry offers some amazing dining experiences, with experienced chefs seeking to top each other by creating dishes that tantalize the tastebuds. More often than not, chefs are using fresh meat and vegetables sourced locally. Whether your preference is steak, seafood or something off the beaten path, there will be something for you at Eight Zero Zero, ESCA, Schnitzels and Table 21 in Cornwall, Sheep’s Head Bistro is South Glengarry or the Georgian House in Alexandria.

Tastes of the World If you are looking for a more exotic dining experience, we have the tastes of the world to offer. In the Counties check out Yefsi in Iroquois, Sol de Acapulco in Ingleside and Sunshine in South Stormont. Publife

DINING cornwalltourism.com / WHEREONTARIOBEGAN.CA

Sometimes a night out means a cold beverage and a basket of chicken wings in a cozy pub setting. It’s a place to catch the game and have a friendly conversation. Fortunately for travellers, the pub lifestyle is alive and well here, and local pubs can be found in just about every city, town and village. During your rural ramblings drop in to the Kilted Canuck in Maxville, Jack’s Pub in Williamstown or O’Neill’s Pub in Long Sault. While in the city, check out Chez Liz in Le Village, Shoeless Joe’s on Brookdale or the Jet Set pub at NAV Centre. Truffles Burger Bar

Lunch Crisp salads, tasty soups and generous sandwiches lead the way on many lunch menus at small bistros. Comfort food such as grilled cheese sandwiches and smoked meat are popular at places like the Quirky Carrot in Alexandria, the Sweet Tooth Bakery in Lancaster and Love Love Food in Cornwall, where the owner is also the creative genius in the kitchen. Fast and Fantastic Let’s be honest. Sometimes we just don’t have time to sit down and enjoy a leisurely meal. Fortunately, we have you covered. Stopping by a chip stand is a long-standing tradition in the region. Nothing is tastier than freshly made French fries – complemented by a main of hot dogs, perch rolls or cheeseburgers. Steamies are hot dogs that are steamed to provide a soft and tasty treat, and each location has their own variation. Poutine, of course, can often be a meal on its own.

Blue Anchor

Coffee Shops

Breakfast The old-fashioned diner approach to serving breakfast is alive and well in Cornwall and the Counties. Dozens of small restaurants devoted to the morning repast dot the landscape, offering the traditional meal of bacon, eggs, and homefries – along with just about any variation you can think of. You can upscale the experience at the new Cora’s restaurant in Cornwall and Nautica in Long Sault, and on the weekends Sunday brunch is a hit with families. Most of the breakfast diners close in the early afternoon, so don’t delay in grabbing a seat!

The day just doesn’t begin for many people until they have had their first coffee. Luckily for bean connoisseurs, there is always a coffee shop around the corner. Tim Hortons is a national favourite, while Starbucks has finally landed in Cornwall. Free trade and organic choices, including lattes, cappuccinos and other speciality coffees can be found at a number of small independent cafés such as Stomping Grounds in the Cotton Mill District, Mindful Cookery in Downtown Cornwall and Cup of Jo’s in Winchester.

cornwalltourism.com / WHEREONTARIOBEGAN.CA

Check out local favourites such as Billy K’s, Chef in a Bun, the Loose Caboose and Seguin Patate in Cornwall, and Gaetan’s in Alexandria. Cool Down It takes a while for the sun to set in the summer, which gives us all more time to enjoy a cool treat at any of the great ice cream parlours that dot the region. Check out Dairy Queen in Cornwall and Lancaster, Menchies in Cornwall or Grama’s Ice Cream in Long Sault.

Cornwall pizza is a unique experience - and one best served hot out of a cardboard box. Several local pizza parlours vie for top honours, but all deliver a pie that is robust and topped with the freshest of ingredients.

Sightseeing can be hard work. Take some time to relax with a cold drink on any one of the many outdoor patios throughout the region. Patios are a great way to meet the locals and create new friends.

The Lancaster Perch Roll is a perch filet tossed in flour then lightly fried. Served in a toasted bun and covered in a sweet sauce. Legend has it that Marie, the lady who made the perch roll famous by selling it from a riverside diner on stilts, sold her perch roll sauce recipe for $100,000. Try the Blue Anchor’s version of this local favourite on their waterfront patio just east of Cornwall on County Road 2.

A steamed hotdog topped with mustard, chopped onion, and fresh coleslaw served in a top loading bun. Ketchup and relish usually are on request only.

The flooding during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958 resulted in the loss of six small villages and the relocation of inhabitants to new areas. The result was the creation of new communities that exist today. The complex consists of ten heritage buildings that were restored and relocated to Ault Park in Long Sault.

Believed to be one of the oldest cemeteries in Ontario, it was closed to burials in 1915. The stone monument, the surrounding wall and the gate were built by the Provincial Government in 1938. Buried in the cemetery are Captain “Spanish” John MacDonnell, soldier of fortune in Spain and aide to the Stuart court in France: Simon Fraser the famous explorer, and John Sandfield Macdonald the first Premier of Ontario.
