Mayor Towndale to speak at Cornwall Breakfast Connections

Cornwall Ontario – Mayor Justin Towndale will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Breakfast Connections event on May 17th. The popular networking event will be taking place on May 17th at the Cornwall Civic Complex, Salon B from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. The event is open to business owners and community leaders from Cornwall and neighboring municipalities. Organizers encourage early registration as seats are limited.

The re-launch of Breakfast Connections earlier this year was a huge success. The community has welcomed the opportunity to reconnect and share information.

Mayor Towndale will be providing an overview of the Council term so far: accomplishments, challenges, opportunities, and the plan forward.

“The recent return of Breakfast Connections is a welcome opportunity for business, government, and other stakeholders to connect and network,” says Mayor Towndale. “The City of Cornwall is pleased to host this event, and thanks the Cornwall Enterprise Business Centre and the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce, along with all the sponsors, for making great events like this happen.”

Launch of Digital Service Squad Program

The event will also formally launch the region’s new Digital Service Squad program. The program offers one-one assistance as well as support for basic website setup, Google Business Profiles, 360° photos, social media presence, and much more. Squad members are also trained to help qualified small businesses with the development of their Digital Transformation Plan and then with the application process for a $2,500 Digital Transformation Grant.

A full complimentary breakfast will be served and is made possible through the generous support of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, Choose Cornwall, Desjardins, the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Seguin Financial and ACC Futures.

“We’re grateful to be able to support important networking events for businesses like Breakfast Connections,” says Angela Bero, General Manger Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to welcoming Kay Mathews and her team from OBIAA to Cornwall to launch the Digital Service Squad program that will support the digital needs of our members and greater region.”

Register Today: There is no cost to attend the Business Breakfast, however, pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 100 attendees, so be sure to register early to avoid disappointment! Register for the Business Breakfast https://form.jotform. com/231084838858267

Celebrating Mother’s Day at Chateau Glengarry

On Sunday, May 14th, millions of people around the world will celebrate the special women in their lives, especially the mothers, grandmothers, and stepmothers who tirelessly care for their loved ones. At Chateau Glengarry, we are also celebrating this charming day.

Apart from birthdays, primary female caregivers may not always get the recognition they deserve and may not be entitled to a day to kick back and relax and let others take the helm. Mother’s Day entitles them to something special. Thankfully, there are plenty of creative ways to celebrate mothers and mother figures this year.

One such way is to treat them to a special meal with delicious food. Thanks to joint efforts, we have successfully stayed away from the pandemic and can now relax. A beautiful Mother’s Day cherry cake and a cup of wine are enjoyable additions to the meal.

Another idea is to capture those special moments with photographs. Consider making a slide show or a video to let friends and family appreciate their favorite photos from childhood and even present-day photos that Mom is sure to appreciate. Use sentimental music or Mom’s favorite songs as the soundtrack and include some inspirational quotations or personal

person or over group meeting apps.

During the celebrations, make sure to incorporate their hobbies and interests, whether it includes hitting the links, knitting, singing in the church choir, or digging in the garden.

Mother’s Day celebrations can be unique, heartfelt, and customized based on individual needs. Let us take the time to show our appreciation for the wonderful mothers and mother figures in our lives.

The City of Cornwall proclaimed the week of May 7-13 as Emergency preparedness Week throughout the City. This week-long campaign aims to promote public awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness and resilience.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, individuals, families, businesses, and communities are encouraged to take steps to reduce the impact of disasters and emergencies. This year’s national theme is “Be Prepared. Know your Risks,” whereas the provincial theme is “A Safe, Practiced, and Prepared Ontario”.

Both emphasize the need to prepare for a range of potential emergencies, such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, and pandemics.

“Emergency preparedness is crucial for everyone,” said Leighton Woods, Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Cornwall. “Disasters and emergencies can strike at any time, and being prepared can make a significant difference in your safety and resilience.”

There are several steps individuals and families can take to prepare for emergencies, including:

• Creating an emergency kit with essential supplies, such as water, food, medication, and first aid items.

• Developing an emergency plan that includes communication strategies, evacuation routes, and meeting places.

• Staying informed about potential hazards and emergency alerts through local media,

social media, and other sources.

Businesses and communities can also take steps to enhance their emergency preparedness, such as:

• Creating emergency response plans that outline the roles and responsibilities of employees, partners, and stakeholders.

• Conducting emergency drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of response plans.

• Investing in technology and infrastructure that can enhance emergency communications and response.

“We encourage everyone to take part in Emergency Preparedness Week and take steps to prepare for emergencies,” said Woods. “By working together, we can build safer, more resilient communities that are ready for anything.”

CPS Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion update

At the Cornwall Police Services Board Meeting on May 4, 2023, Police Chief Shawna Spowart presented the 2022 EDI progress report. The progress report detailed things that the police service has been doing to enhance equity, diversion, and inclusion in their work as well as what their plans are for 2023.

“There are a number of ways that we con duct ourselves and do this work and one of those is training. In 2022, we did a number of service wide training sessions,” explained Spowart.

Following an introductory EDI training in 2021, members of the Cornwall Police Service were provided with more in-depth training opportunities in 2022. In the fall, ser vice members participated in an Indigenous Awareness Training offered by Circle of Life Consulting. Through the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Spowart had the opportun ity to visit to remote indigenous communities – something Spowart said was a real lifechanging experience.

Community engagement is another signifi cant component of the work the CPS is doing with regards to EDI. A strategy survey con ducted with local diverse groups showed that 75% found it important to have police pres ence at community events. In 2022, the CPS were present at the Cornwall Sports Festival, Franco-Ontarian Day, and others. Deputy Chief Foy and other officers walked and

Newfoundland & Labrador

Did you know that we have 9.985 million km2 of land we call home to explore? Canada is the second largest county in the world. Now that is a lot of ground to cover and places to explore!

At Jolly Tours, we are globe trotters, with no lack of places on the bucket list to develop tours and explore. However, there is always the constant of Canadian Tour destinations. We love exploring our home and native lands, and we know you do also. From the far East to the Far West and everything in between, are we ever lucky to call this diverse landscape home.

An annual favorite turned tradition is our 16 days Newfoundland & Labrador Tour. My oh my do we have a soft spot and love for our Eastern Provinces. 16 days on our Newfoundland & Labrador tour is a journey that encompasses three of these Eastern Provinces. A maritime tradition in New Brunswick, a traditional downhome kitchen party to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, just a prelude to the “main event” of Newfoundland & Labrador.

There are twenty Unesco world heritage sites in Canada, four of these are located in Newfoundland & Labrador; and three of these are featured in our tour, Gros Morne National Park, L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, and Red Bay Basque Whaling Station.

Gros Morne National Park, spans more than 1800 km2 and rivals the views and fjords of Norway. L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, here Vikings once stood. This is the only

authenticated Norse site in North America. The Red Bay Basque Whaling Station dates back to the mid-16th century and drew whalers for the Basque region of Spain, France to the strait of Belle Isle to the shores of Red Bay. Not too many Tour Operators offer the ability to go into Labrador with a Newfoundland Tour, but to us, this is an essential component. So much to mention, and not enough space, when you have been in one place for 500 years…like Newfoundland, you tend to have lots to share!

Q: When is the best time to visit Newfoundland? A: The best time to visit Newfoundland is during the summer months from June to August when the weather is warmer, and many of the popular tourist attractions are open. We prefer July & August. June can be a little too cool yet.

Q: What should I pack for a trip to Newfoundland? A: Newfoundland can be quite cool and rainy, even in the summer months, so it is important to pack warm and waterproof clothing. Visitors should also bring sturdy hiking shoes or boots, as well as insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the stunning landscapes.

Newfoundland & Labrador are waiting for you, are you ready?

We love all Moms, here’s what you had to say…

Ashley Burelle: I’ve been blessed to have so many special ‘bonus’ moms in my life who are always there to guide me, support me and offer advice. They are inspirational in their own unique ways, and they have all made me feel loved during hard times, and through the successes. They’ve helped shape me into who I am today. I’m forever grateful!

Hannah Sommerville: My mom is one of the most selfless people in the world. She rarely has time to herself, as she is always helping other people with their issues. She is not only an incredible mother to four children between the ages of 22-16, she is also a mother to all 29 of her kindergarten students. My mom does not stop, she is always on the go either cleaning, cooking or preparing stuff for her students. I would not be half of the person I am today, without my mom. I am beyond grateful to have her as a mother and it makes me so happy hearing how amazing she is from everyone she knows. I love you mom!

Shannon Champagne: My Mom is incredibly special because she is the backbone of our family. Her laugh is heart and her hugs are our safe spot. Not only is she an incredible mother to us but she is an amazing grandmother to her 4 grandkids. Without our MOM, we wouldn’t know what the word Family actually meant

Frances Cardinal: As the song goes BecauseYou Loved Me by Celine Dion says it all! My Mom Nicole is special because she chose to stay at home to raise us three daughters until we were all in school. She now continues to spread the love with her four grandchildren. Thank you Mom for everything that you did and still do!

Krista Petersen: My mom means more to me than words could ever describe. I am a first time mom and have a whole new level of appreciation for her efforts, dedication and love.

Bryce Clouthier: So I will be entering this contest for my wife since she is an amazing mom to our little girl. We have 1 child together and she does everything she possibly can to make her life the best possible. From kissing booboo’s to making crafts to door dashing on the side after the baby is in bed to help save for us to finally own our own home. This woman puts her entire being into our family and we could not possibly thank or love her enough for it. We are still fairly new to the parent game so I’m sure there are times where she isn’t confident in her mommy choices, but from both of us I hope she knows she is amazing and we couldn’t ask anyone better in our life.

Ryan Stuckless: My mom is the most generous person I know. She is always willing to help out anyone she can and she means the world to me.

Congratulations to our winners

Cornwall Celebrates Mental Health Week

When you hear the phrase, ‘Go big or go home’, you usually don’t think of a flag raising, but that is exactly what CMHA did for their Mental Health Week flag raising on Friday, May 5, 2023.

The first indications that this flag raising was going to be different were the music playing and people gathered on picnic tables outside CPS headquarters on Pitt Street. The Optimist Club of Cornwall sponsored a BBQ which they were setting up before the event started at 10:30.

Mayor Justin Towndale presented the City of Cornwall’s proclamation of Mental Health

Week 2023 to Angele D’Alessio just before the CMHA flag was raised – that’s when the fun began.

Marilyn Parisien, founder of SDG Fitness, was invited to the stage and led the crowd through a couple of exercise numbers along with some enthusiastic volunteers from St. Joes and CCVS.

Spirits were high as several speakers, community partners, and performers were called up to share how everyone’s mental health story is important, share local resources, and highlight methods of self-care that can help us stay resilient.

Surprise your mom this year!

Are you all out of Mother’s Day gift ideas? Do you want to give your mom something unique that’s different from what you’ve given her in the past? Here are a few original gift ideas to inspire you.

Unique flowers

Flower bouquets are old news. Instead, why not book a timeslot at a local garden and pick a bouquet of tulips together? If your mom prefers at-home activities, get her a flower bouquet in the form of a craft project, like paint by numbers or origami. For a more classic option, consider an everlasting rose that will stay beautiful for years to come.

Personalized item

Pick out your best family photos and have them printed on an attractive, fun or practical object. Mugs, t-shirts, blankets, puzzles, pillows, drink coasters and bookmarks are some of the many possibilities.

Local products

Create a gift box filled with local products, like handmade soaps, craft beers, cured meats, spirits, body lotion, jams, clothing, candles or anything else you think your mom might like. It’ll give you a chance to make new local discoveries.

Art

If you have a decent budget, get your mom a piece of art from a local painter, sculptor or photographer. Choose something to match the decor in your mom’s home or which holds a special meaning.

A DIY kit

If your mom is the hands-on type, gift her a DIY kit so she can make something useful, such as a candle, wool blanket or terrarium. If she’s a foodie, gift her a DIY cheese, bread or gin kit.

Accessories or beauty products

Upgrade your mother’s hair dryer or flat iron to a more powerful model, or gift her personalized products based on her age and skincare needs. For example, collagen facial oil, lip care, brightening serum, foot cream, perfume and makeup are great options.

Visit the stores and boutiques near you to find a gift to surprise and delight your mom.

4 fun Mother’s Day activities

Do you want to organize a special, fun activity this Mother’s Day to create unforgettable memories? Take inspiration from these four ideas.

1. Recreate a special moment Think of an activity you and your mom did together in the past that brought you joy. See if you can recreate it to bring back happy memories and create new ones.

2. Treat mom to dinner and a show If you know your mom’s tastes, buy tickets to a concert, theatre show or comedy act. Combine the experience with a meal at a restaurant to make it even more special.

3. Unwind at a spa A trip to the spa is a great way to relax and take a break from the daily grind. Extend the relaxation by booking an over-

Virtual Walk-in Clinic

night stay at a hotel.

4. Go on an outdoor adventure If the weather permits, take the family on a hike in the great outdoors. Slow down and enjoy the scenery and fresh air. Don’t forget to pack snacks! Need a change of pace? Go somewhere you’ve never been before.

There’s no shortage of activities to celebrate Mother’s Day! For example, you could go on a bike ride, arrange a photo shoot or attend a cooking class. Discover what’s available in your area.

Mother’s Day meal ideas

Do you want to celebrate Mother’s Day with a tasty home-cooked meal? Here are some inspiring ideas.

Breakfast or brunch

Serve up some brunch classics or be bold and try something new! For example, spinach and goat cheese quiche, nutmeg custard pie, buckwheat

pancakes with mushrooms, rice pudding with fruit, caramel croissants and eggs Benedict with lobster are tempting choices.

Lunch or dinner

Serve bite-sized appetizers like asparagus and prosciutto crostini, cheese and caramelized onion puffs, gravlax or your choice of verrines. Prefer a full-course meal? Almondcrusted salmon, shrimp pasta, pan-seared scallops with cider glaze or surf and turf make great options. If you want something a bit lighter, consider a vegetable soup, pork tenderloin salad or cauliflower and roasted pistachio couscous.

Visit your local shops to stock up on fresh and delicious produce.

Stormont MP Chevrier proposed five provinces

In May 1937, Stormont MP Lionel Chevrier, the Cornwall native who would rise through the Liberal ranks to become a powerful cabinet minister and first president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, called for a radical re-design of Canada’s political landscape.

Chevrier, at 32 the youngest member of the House of Commons (first elected in 1935), sounded more like a Conservative, when he called Canada an “over-governed” country.

To remedy the “problem” he supported reducing the number of provinces to five, one more than what the country started with in 1867. He called it a “logical solution.”

The Chevrier model – not part of the Liberal government platform - called for the union of British Columbia and Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Maritimes. Ontario and Quebec would remain as one. Newfoundland didn’t become part of Canada until 1949.

In a May, 1937 editorial, the StandardFreeholder said Cornwall needed to come to grips with a severe shortage of suitable rental units.

The editorial said the lack of supply was forcing many families to live in unsatisfactory quarters. It called out profiteers who were taking advantage of the housing shortage to gouge desperate tenant.

An increase in available housing was needed, it said, to keep pace with a growing community.

“Nothing hampers progress so much as unreasonable housing costs and short supply,” the editorial warned.

Does any of the above have a familiar ring?

“Just get him out of town.”

That was the plea to Magistrate P. C. Bergeron by Crown Attorney John G. Harkness when a Montreal man appeared in court on May 14, 1937 on a charge of vagrancy (today it is called being homeless).

Harkness said the man had been trying to

sell bogus disinfectant door-to-door when arrested on a complaint. The concoction was nothing more than water and salt spiked with a chemical to give it a strong odor.

After giving it some thought, the magistrate agreed that it was better to send the culprit packing on the next train out of town than to put him in the slammer.

He was given 24-hours to get out of town.

ALSO THIS MONTH IN 1937: With council urged to set an example for the private sector, councillors voted to give city workers a 10% pay increase that brought the hourly rate to 40 cents. Civic workers had gone several years without a pay increase. Council was told that Howard Smith Paper Mill was expected to increase the base rate to 40 cents an hour. ... Council approved spending $450 for a new cement mixer and $133 for an electric adding machine to be shared by several departments. ... With a $9.4 million surplus, the new Ontario budget provided subsidies for municipalities and a reduction in commercial motor vehicle licence fees. ...

Cornwall’s oldest house, built with logs in 1802, was torn down. Structurally, The Church of Good Shepherd rectory at 411 First St. E. was in fair condition. However, the solid log walls made it difficult to upgrade the home with plumbing and electricity. The original building had outlasted two additions. ... Talk about back to the future. The Standard-Freeholder went to three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday - from twice a week. The publisher called it a “forward step” that would provide greater coverage of the city and district. ... A barn owned by Earl Tilton two miles west of Moulinette was destroyed by fire. Twentyeight pigs were lost in the blaze. ... 500 boys and girls took first communion at Nativity Church, while 250 took first communion at St. Columban’s. ... Police in Cornwall and the United Counties said new speed limits – 30 mph in the city and 50 mph on highways and county roads – would be strictly enforced. Cornwall Police Chief Fred Seymour said any

driver exceeding the limit would be ticketed. “It’s 30 mph and no more,” he said. ... The Rivermead Dairy Bar at 401 Water St. re-opened after closing for the winter. ... A story in the Standard-Freeholder noted that the 2 1/2 ton bell in the St. Columban’s Church tower was installed in 1902. ... Newsreels of King George V1’s coronation were viewed by 3,000 school children at the Palace and Capitol theatres. Stores and schools closed for Coronation Day and a parade to the Athletic Grounds had 6,000 participants. A crowd of 10,000 packed the Grounds. The Standard-Freeholder printed a 36-page special supplement marking the occasion. ... The first high mass celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church was for the funeral of city contractor Gilbert Emard. ... In a one-paragraph brief at the bottom of an inside page, the Standard-Freeholder reported that Freda Horovitz, wife of Mayor Aaron Horovitz, had been granted a divorce and was now living in Ottawa.

TRIVIA: In 1971, singer Don MacLean sang a song about “The day the music died.”

It was a tribute to this singer.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Cornwall’s post office, built in the late 1800s at a cost of $45,000, was torn down in 1955 and replaced with the Seaway Building that was to be the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority headquarters. One commentator said the decision to tear down the post office was a case of “pulverizing history.” In the “Towers of Time” history of Ontario post offices, the author said a time capsule containing documents, coins and newspapers from the 1800s “disappeared” in the demolition. It may have been buried in the rubble.

QUOTED: “There are plenty of ways to get ahead. The first is so basic I’m almost embarrassed to say it: Spend less than you earn.” -

ONE FINAL THING: At the current rate, the United States is headed for at least 1,400 mass shootings this year. In too many cases it will be the result of powerful assault weapons purchased legally by people with mental health issues.

Letters to the Editor

Dear editor,

Kelly Bergeron shared an interesting point of view regarding client service[s] rendered by city personnel.

Having worked as a federal public servant in management for several decades, in the field of communications, my job was to deliver a top quality service to the public. Employees received regular performance reviews from their managers and were held accountable for their performance.

City Administration and the current Council were either hired or elected to serve on council via a municipal election to serve all residents [clients]. This should require all city employees, at every level, and all councillor members to respond to information requests, promptly, to provide an overall good service. This is not always the case.

The suggestion to hire a consultant to conduct a client service survey is a good one otherwise how can our city improve its services without knowing what is working well and be able to detect areas of concern?

The city is in the throes of hiring a new CAO therefore in terms of timing the person who will be tasked with managing Administration and overseeing client service will have a golden opportunity to determine the best use of human resources and to identify cracks in the system by way of a public survey and other measures.

It should be up to residents to grade city services since our property taxes fund these and we pay for salaries that support these services. Indeed a bi-annual survey should become a routine practise and the results shared with taxpayers.

Happy National Nursing Week!

Cornwall Community Hospital are beyond grateful for the more than 600 highly dedicated, compassionate, and knowledgeable nurses at CCH for their incredible contributions and commitment to providing Exceptional Care. Always.

The theme chosen this year by the Canadian Nurses Association is Our Nurses. Our Future., meant to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s healthcare journey.

Nurses wear many different hats in ensuring that patients receive the best treatment and care. They are an essential piece of our CCH Team, not only as caregivers, but also as educators, advocates, and leaders.

Dear editor,

I moved to Cornwall from Montreal almost a year ago now (like so many other ex-Quebecers) and am thoroughly enjoying my decision and living here in the Le Village Cotton Mills area.

I am not sure if the corner lot on William Street (at Edward) is privately or city owned. But the City of Cornwall used it this winter as a snow dump.

Last summer it was a grassy little park. After this winter, and all the snow dumped there, it is littered with large branches and many broken trees, remaining dirt and gravel from the snow piles, and is generally an eyesore.

Who is responsible for cleaning up this mess? Just a few benches and pots of flowers and this would be a nice little park for almost no cost.

If an effort is being made by the city to improve the Le Village part of town, this should be taken care of and soon.

Respectfully,

These last few years have not been easy. Despite the challenges, our nurses have always stepped up to answer the call and ensure our patients can continue receiving safe, high quality and uninterrupted care.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our patients, our hospital, and our community. Your hard work and sacrifice do not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for everything that you do.

Please join us in wishing all nurses at CCH and across our community a very Happy Nursing Week!

KRYSTINE THERRIAULT ktherriault@seawaynews.media

“More than 350 comic book and pop culture fans visited Downtown Cornwall to snag some free comics from the industries top publishers and introducing readers to some great upcoming summer storylines,” owner Randy Sauve shared in a Facebook Update, “Also, a great big THANK YOU to Carol and Scott for their incredible assistance throughout the day, and to the community for always supporting this great event.”

A lineup was ready outside when Fantasy Realm opened on the 6th and there was a lot of traffic in and out over the course of the beautiful day. As is tradition, Scott Beaudoin was outside in one of his self-designed costumes encouraging people to check out the event.

TAKE A TO YOURSELF MOMENT

5.

HOW TO PLAY:

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once.

Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: you must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.

ARIES: Despite mounting fatigue and poor health, you won’t let yourself be bogged down. You’ll do what it takes to feel energized and pull yourself out of the funk that’s been slowing you down.

TAURUS: A friend may betray your trust. You’ll get rid of freeloading and energy-sucking friends. This will allow you to spend more time with the people you love.

GEMINI: You’ll plan a critical project. You’ll also demonstrate your talents and skills in front of many people, putting you in an excellent position to get promoted.

CANCER: You’ll be overwhelmed with a desire to travel. You’ll quickly contact a travel agency to ensure you have the perfect summer holiday. You may also sign up for a training course.

LEO: All your attention will be focused on specific emotions. You feel a great need for change. New clothes or a new hairstyle could be just what the doctor ordered.

VIRGO: Your happiness will fluctuate. Make a point of getting together with the people you love to raise your spirits. You’ll have fun at work this week.

LIBRA: You’ll have a lot to do when you go back to work. You’ll take an organized and methodical approach to check off several tasks weighing you down. Don’t procrastinate.

SCORPIO: You’ll do something outside your comfort zone. You could also accomplish a brilliant feat and outdo yourself in the process. You’ll undoubtedly feel proud of yourself.

SAGITTARIUS: You don’t have to look far to find happiness: home and family matter most. Don’t hesitate to gather your loved ones around the table, if only to celebrate the arrival of good weather.

For all your multi-media needs, contact one of our team

CAPRICORN: You can’t keep living like this; change is needed. You may find the financial means to embark on a new adventure, such as buying a house or starting a business.

AQUARIUS: Getting a bit of exercise will ease your worries. If you’re in a new relationship, you’ll feel a strong need for affection and commitment. However, you may feel worried about losing your freedom.

PISCES: You must act now to be successful. You know how to make your dreams come true. If you’re moving this summer, you might want to start packing a few boxes, so you don’t stress out at the last minute.

Why a healthy pelvic floor is so important

Natasha Ingram Movement Matters

MOVE THERAPEUTICS

One in four women suffer from pelvic floor related issues, yet they still aren’t being discussed nearly enough. Pelvic floor issues can result in painful periods, painful intercourse, constipation, back pain and hip pain; yet the most common issues are urine leakage, pelvic organ prolapse, and postural issues. These issues are too often “normalized” when women confide in other women who have experienced them as well. While these issues are common, they are nowhere near normal. And the good news is: we can do something about them! By strengthening and improving your pelvic floor function, you can improve a number of things such as your posture, reduce urine leakage, and reduce your risk of pelvic organ prolapse.

1. Improve your posture. Your pelvic floor and posture are intrinsically linked. The pelvic floor controls the muscles used when standing, sitting and walking. Too much sitting and weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to poor posture and result in back pain and urine leakage. Try to move every 30-45 minutes to avoid sitting for too long. Take a break and work on your breathing. Inhale and relax your pelvic floor, then exhale and squeeze around your urethra (where you pee from).

2. Stop urine leakage. Strengthen the pelvic floor muscles around your urethra as well

Plastic Pollution

As most of us are aware by now, plastic waste has become a significant environment al problem. With the exponential increase in the production and usage of plastic products worldwide, the disposal of plastic waste has become a challenge for the global community. The non-biodegradable nature of plastic waste makes it a persistent and long-lasting pollutant that poses a threat to the natural world and human health.

From its creation to end of life, plastic waste is an environmental inconvenience. Our natural world is disrupted to allow the extraction of crude oil - a key component in plastic fabrication, by way of deforestation to mine for oil, to end of life meaning not being recycled. Plastic waste is created when plas tics are discarded or improperly disposed of. This waste takes on different forms, including single-use plastics, such as straws, bags, cut lery and larger items like containers, electronics and packaging.

According to a report by the United Nations, more than 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans each year, causing immense harm to marine life and ecosystems. Plastic waste can release harmful chemicals as it breaks down, which can contaminate our food chain and water sources, leading to health problems and diseases.

All is not lost. To combat this overflow of

as the muscles that support your pelvis. Strengthening your core also plays a large part in this as well as doing scar work if you have a cesarean scar or abdominal issues (self massages in a circular motion on your lower stomach). By doing these things you will reduce urine leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing and with exercise, as well as reducing the feeling of needing to pee constantly.

3. Reduce pelvic organ prolapse. A pelvic organ prolapse is when your bladder, uterus or rectum falls down into your vaginal canal due to trauma and weak pelvic floor muscles. Unfortunately the odds of women having a prolapse are high and 1 of 3 women that go through corrective surgery require a follow up surgery. So whether you have one or not, you should be doing things to lessen the load on these organs.

Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by squeezing and lifting vaginally. Strengthen your core muscles by drawing your belly button towards your spine while you exhale, and expand your belly out on your inhale.

Women can empower other women by encouraging them to seek help and guidance for these common and solvable concerns. If you know someone who may be struggling with pelvic floor related issues, you can be the first to say: there is something we can do about it!

If you need help with your pelvic floor health, please do not hesitate to contact me at info@movetherapeutics.ca.

plastics, individuals can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. In addition to individual efforts, government and private sectors can also contribute to plastic reduction by adopting sustainable practices in the workplace. By adopting sustainable practices and investing in biodegradable alternatives, we can successfully reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment and protect our natural environment.

A ‘forever cat’ finally found!

NOTICES

It is with great sorrow and deep sadness that we announce the death of Mr. René Joseph Dicaire on Saturday, April 29th, 2023 at the age of 86. Beloved husband for 61 years of Corinne Denise Dicaire (née Legault). Loving father of Marc, Luc, Natalie Coulter (John), Jean-François (Jennifer) and Pierre. Proud grandfather of Quincy, Casey, Zoë and Addy. Best friend to dog Chloé. Dear brother of Murielle Séguin (late Roméo) and Armand (Suzanne). Predeceased by his parents Léo and Alice Dicaire (née Lapointe) and his brother Gérard (late Evelyn). René was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He doted on his family and was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He started his career with the St-Lawrence Seaway Authority before retiring from Great Lakes Pilotage Authority, after 35 years with the federal government and was a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Cornwall.

WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

We were hooked on getting a cat. One even ing we saw two kittens rough-and-tumble play ing in a Vienna pet store window. We didn.t want to separate them, so we held off our purchase until one was sold. The next day we returned: both had already been sold, together.

Then, on our last day in Vienna, we came across another pet store window kitten. We bought it and headed for Eastern Europe.

As we travelled through Hungary, excited children would crowd around our little one, They’d cry out, “Moy-tcha! Moy-tcha!” (From research years later, I’ve learned that properly, it’s ‘macska’. ‘Cica’ is also a children’s word for kitten or cat used by children. We corrupted it to ‘Matza’.

Our van became the only home Matza knew for the next four countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Italy). Because of that, she took on dog traits, except for hanging her head out the window.

She would walk with us, without a leash. If the door of our van was open, she’d leap in as if she were a dog, wordlessly saying “Hey! Let’s go for another ride.” She would usually

OBITUARY

Willis “Keith” Darling, (78), formerly of Grantley/Apple Hill, Ontario, passed away at his residence on April 29, 2023. Keith was born to Willis Frank and Isobel Darling, on November 18, 1944, in Grantley, Ontario. His sister Carol, whom he cherished greatly, soon followed. Keith was a talented athlete who loved playing sports, especially softball. He enjoyed shooting pool, throwing darts, driving fast cars, and dancing to Rock and Roll music. He loved Elvis and his ability to jive earned him the nickname “Crazy Legs”.

As a teenager, Keith began his working career with the Canadian Pacific Railroad in communications. He then transitioned into law enforcement as a dispatcher with the OPP. It was evident that he possessed excellent communication skills, remained calm under stressful emergency situations, and was able to think clearly and quickly during the most chaotic times. He thrived in the OPP and accumulated 28 years of service and after retiring he worked at Crime Stoppers and was a proud member of the OPP Veterans’ Association.

Keith married Margaret Mary Wheeler of St. Andrew’s West, Ontario in December of 1970. They were blessed with two children in quick succession, Lorrie and Blaine, whom they raised in the small hamlet of Apple Hill, prior to moving to St. Andrew’s West. He was blessed with four grandchildren: Kyra, Julia, William, and Finley whom he loved dearly.

Keith enjoyed giving back to his community and was a cornerstone in the local ladies’ softball circuit. He coached the Guindon Glenoco fast pitch team and the Dairy Queen ‘Little Darling’s’ and both teams won many tournaments and several league championships.

Never a stranger to anyone and, with his customary witty lines, Keith Darling was a friend to many. When anyone inquired how he was doing, a common response was “all the better for you asking!”

The family would like to thank the River Front Retirement Residence and their amazing staff for the care they provided Keith.

Left to pass on his memory are Blaine (Regina), Lorrie (Steve), Carman Fraser (late Isobel Fraser), his aunts Eileen McDonell (late Donald) and June Raymond (late Bernie), his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, God-children, nephews and cousins. Regardless of his title: Keith, Dad, Coach, Poppy, or friend, his happy smiling face and easy-going personality will be dearly missed by many.

To commemorate Keith there will be a celebration of life this summer.

WOMAN’S BEST FRIEND TOO – Matza was cute, a good snuggler and loved travelling across Eastern Europe in our VW Westfalia

take position on top of the dash. (Shades of Nala, the travelling cat of Dean Nicholson. Check out his travels on his YouTube website, 1bike1world.) –

In a recent comic strip I saw three animals in a moving car. The dogs had their heads out the open window. The cat was cowering on the floor: “Bark! Bark! Whoopee!” shouts the first dog. From the other, “Riding in a car is just great!” However, the cat screams, “We’re all going to die!”

It’s only rare cats, such as Matza and Nala, that behave as if they were dogs.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Edna of Cornwall on Thursday, April 27th, 2023, mere days shy of her 107th birthday. Beloved wife of the late Royal Joseph Leonard Dorey, and loving mother to Charles (late Claire), Phillip (Lina), Linda Devaul (Ray), Dorenda, and David (Lise), and doting grandmother of Jo-Ann (Sylvain Cyr), Jacques (Maris MacDonald), Victor (Marie Leeder), Kristine Devaul (Kevin Hawkins), Karen Denisevich (Dimitri), Gregory Devaul (late Chanthee Wonnuvong), Mélanie Dorey (Chris Leizert), Brigitte Mitchell (Sean), and Nathaniel (Chelsea Prieur). She was also great-grandmother of 15 and great-great grandmother of 2. Dear sister of Meryl Leslie (Fred), and aunt and great aunt to many. Predeceased by her parents George and Ethel Rivers (née Durey) and Arthur Vine (stepfather), and her siblings Ann, Eunice, Gladys Riddell, Harold (Hilda), Ruth Eamon (Howard), Edgar (Marie), and Victor, and her infant daughter Ann.

She was our daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, and aunt. She doted on all children whose lives were fortunate enough to be touched by her special gift of caring.

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful, kind, and compassionate staff at Glen Stor Dun Lodge, who had the fortunate opportunity of hosting her residency for the last six weeks of her long life.

Visitation will take place at Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall ON, Friday May 12, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Anglican Church, 105 Second Street West, Cornwall with an informal visitation opportunity commencing at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Cemetery, Cornwall.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Trinity Anglican Church would be appreciated by the family. Online messages of condolence may be made in the obituary section of www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca.

Local Home Hardware Dealer Named Young

Retailer of the Year by North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA)

Scott Fines, Dealer-Owner of Fines Home Hardware Building Centres in Cornwall and Ingleside, has received the NHPA’s 2023 Young Retailer of the Year Award.

The award recognizes individual achieve ments by independent home improvement and paint retailers aged 35 and younger throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Prior to earning his professional engineer ing designation, Scott grew up working with his parents at the original Fines Home Hardware Building Centre, in Shelburne, Ontario. Appreciation Brunch

The Agape Centre hosted an Appreciation Brunch to recognize their dedicated team of volunteers who help to ensure that people in our community have food on their tables and in their bellies. Members of the Board of Directors were on hand to prepare a delicious brunch and show appreciation for each person who chooses to devote their time to the Agape Centre and the programs they provide in our community.

The Square is a changing! Have we got events for you!

Did you know that Cornwall Square will sponsor a Mother’s Day contest again this year. This year’s theme is “The Most valuable lesson I learned from my mom is……” in 2 sentences or less. We have our Mother’s Day display at Centre Court on the main level where people can take a selfie with their Mom and leave their contest entry in the ballot box. See our Ad in today’s paper.

Did you know that you can find that special gift for your mom at many of our stores from sweets at Laura Secord, to clothing at Cleo, Eclipse, Northern Reflections and Urban Wear, to that extra something at Hallmark, Modern Primitive/Global Trading and Showcase. If you are looking for something that sparkles, take a look at Charm Jewelers and Peoples. If you are looking for a broader selection of cosmetics or make-up, then stop in at Shoppers Drug Mart. If mom enjoys a good book or crossword puzzles, then browse through the aisles in Coles. You are sure to find the right gift for your mom.

You need to know, if all that gift hunting makes you hungry and thirsty, then take a break in our Food Court with Tim Hortons, Cedars, Wok Express, Asian Wagon and Sip & Scoop.

Did you know that on this Saturday May 13th “DISCO WHEELS2” , a roller-skating experience will take place here at Cornwall Square on the upper level of the former Sears store. This event sold out in the matter of a few days. It appears that there is mounting interest in roller skating once again. If only stopping on those skates were easier.

Did you know that Cornwall Square is working with a food concept called Full Bellies , a provider of fruit and vegetables where you fill a box full of produce for a fixed price based on the size of box. More details on this new endeavor in next week’s column. At the present time we are looking at locating this concept in one side of The Square Marketplace on the main floor.

Did you know that on Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June 4th, 2023 , the D ream Maker Productions team will perform a ser ies of short plays from different Robert Munsch stories as well as other children’s stories. In addition, there will be a short magic show. This family entertainment will be held in the former EB Games space with Saturday performances at 11:00am and 1:00pm and Sunday’s performance at 1:00pm. Everyone is welcome.

You need to know that as Cornwall Square has for every year, the mall will be closed on Victoria Day Monday to allow all of us who work here at Cornwall Square to share that day with our families.

Legion Riders host fundraiser for Centre 105

Legion Riders held a supper fundraiser at the Cornwall Legion Branch 297 to benefit Centre 105, a Drop-In Day Program in Cornwall offering a hot breakfast, a hot drink, as well as a safe place to socialize to the most vulnerable individuals in our community.

The Legion Riders provided a lovely supper for $15.00 which consisted of ham, scalloped potatoes, veggies, and a variety of pies for dessert. It was a great turn out for the rainy weather, and the total raised was around $5,000.00.

“It was an incredible success, and the Legion Riders were so helpful and such great supporters of Centre 105!” shared Samantha Archambault, Support Worker at Centre 105,

“We are so thankful for all the support and help we had, and all the volunteers that made this event possible.”

During the event, Walker Climate Care made a $2,045.00 donation to Centre 105, one of many monthly donations made by the company to community organizations through their WeCare Maintenance Membership Program.

“I thought I would bring attention to a few remarkable numbers: Centre 105 offered 17068 meals last year, they offer 150 cups of coffee per day, 400 breakfasts per week and 72 loads of laundry per month. Wow!” said Chantal Vachon, Project Manager for Walker Climate Care, “Congratulations on the work you do, making a tremendous difference in the lives of the people in our community.”
