Council candidates being asked to support wage freeze Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A former city councillor who wants the job again said Wednesday the city can’t afford paying its elected officials more money. Mark MacDonald, a former two-term councillor who is running in the October election, is circulating a document among

other candidates, asking for their support in telling the existing city council to shelve plans for a raise. “I knew exactly what the pay was when I signed up,” he said. “Eighteen to 40 per cent is craziness.” MacDonald is referring to the rate of city council raises being recommended by a consultant hired in January to study the issue.

The raises will not tak effect until next year. Council members have had modest cost of living increases this term, or less than two per cent.

The consultants said Monday night at city hall councillors should get their pay hiked to $25,000 a year, from $18,000, while the mayor should make closer to $75,000 instead of $61,000. “The consultant’s report cost $10,000, but it’s something city staff could have done with the click of a mouse - to find out what they pay in other communities,” he said, adding local stakeholders want to see cuts

CORNWALL, Ontario - The search is over, and Rita Cooper couldn’t be happier. The Brinston woman is the winner of $1 million, the owner of a ticket that was purchased in Cornwall June 18 at the CNIB Lottery Booth at Wal-Mart. “It was my 48-year marriage anniversary so I bought an extra ticket,” she said. “I checked the ticket at the truck stop and the clerk told me I won $1 million! “I was so shocked I had to hang on to the counter for dear life!”

Rita immediately went to share the news with her husband who was having a bite to eat in the restaurant. “I gave him a kiss and told him ‘That’s the first time you’ve been kissed by a millionaire!’” The 78-year-old retiree plans to contribute to her grandchildren’s education, bank some of her winnings and treat her husband to another dinner, but at a place a little more upscale than the truck stop.

CORNFEST LIVES!

www.cornwallseawaynews.com

Summertime festival returns, this time in Lamoureux Park Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - This isn’t your father’s Cornfest. The 2014 resurrection of the once popular summertime festival will include the likes of Touch a Truck, The Big Tug and the Wall of Corn. They all sound like something out of a horror film - but nothing could be further from the truth. Paul St. Onge, owner of Mocktails in Lamoureux Park, has instead come up with some novel ways to attract people to the event that runs Aug. 15 to 17. It mirrors previous Cornfest events that used to take place on Pitt Street in name only. This time around Lamoureux Park will be the focal point. Residents, especially children, will be allowed to get up close and personal with municipal dump trucks, street sweepers and the like (Touch a Truck).

There will also be a tug of war competition between locally organized teams (The Big Tug) and residents are being urged to bring in a cob of corn so that it can be included in a huge Wall of Corn. “We’re hoping people will take pictures of themselves in front of it, and send them out on social media, so we can actually show off Cornwall’s wall of corn,” said St. Onge. Cornfest will also include plenty of corn from local producers, live entertainment, and a chance for groups of people to get together and try to pull an 18-wheeler with the help of some rope and strong friends. The highlight, though, said St. Onge, will be all the municipal vehicles on display. “It’s about allowing the kids to get into them and up on them,” he said. “Normally they might be a little afraid to approach them, when they’re working. but we want to show people what their tax dollars pay for.” More information on Cornfest, which is free, can be found at mocktails.ca.

VROOOM!:

Bikers get their motor running for brain cancer research Roxanne Delage ROXANNEDELAGE@GMAIL.COM

CORNWALL, Ontario - Riders from Cornwall, Brockville and Orleans banded together for a common cause, on Saturday, as the fifth edition of the annual Bikers Against Brain Cancer Ride, took to the roads. What started out as a grassroots movement to bring some awareness and raise money for brain cancer research, by local chiropractor, Dr. Paul Poirier - who has been fighting his own battle with the disease, for years - has now reached the entire region. Over three hundred riders in all were scheduled to meet in Smith Falls and return together to Guindon Park for lunch. The weather was ideal. Though still a regional effort, the event, this year, it spread its reached all the way to a young family in Nova Scotia. It was just over a year ago, that Denise Hill’s son Leeland, now 4, had started complaining of headaches. After some testing it was discovered that he had a tennis-ball-size tumour on the back

of his brain and fluid on the front. This meant his brain was only occupying a third of the space is should be, she explained, and that needed surgery immediately. Happily the surgery was successful and now the spirited preschooler is cancer free. Then, earlier this year, Hill happened upon the Bikers Against Brain Cancer, Facebook page, and wanted to reach out just to say “thank you.” Within no time, thanks to many generous sponsors, plans were made to fly Leeland, his mother and grandfather, in from Dartmouth, to participate in this year’s event. During their stay, the visitors were guests at City Hall, met the acting mayor and police chief, and visited the fire station. “It’s more than you could ever ask,” said the grateful mother, who’d been through more than her share over the past year. “We want to grow this even bigger,” said Ray Eady, event chair. “Our intention is to start an east coast ride in partnership with the Hill (family).” “People are coming out of the wood work to help out,” said Eady. In addition, a spaghetti supper, held at the Legion,

Neurological Association’s research efforts. For further information or to donate visit http://www.bikersagainstbraincancer.org.

“To sustain a news department in our market is no longer part of our business model,” he said. “How people are digesting their information is very different than four years ago.” In 2010 the station shuttered its AM 1220 brand and moved to thecornwalldaily.com as a way of providing local news and other information updates. Dickie said there will still be local news updates during breakfast shows on both its FM stations, 101.9 and 104.5, but that will constitute the bulk of its news broadcasts throughout the day. Dickie added the decision was not a reflection of the work done by the news department. “(News director Bill Kingston) and his team did a great job,” he said. “This decision had nothing to do with conduct, performance or passion.”

Homeopathy For Fever Blisters

Fever blisters are caused by a contagious virus called “Herpes Simplex”. Once a person is infected with oral herpes, the virus remains inactive, waiting for a weakened defence system to have the next outbreak. Sam was susceptible to these fever blisters when term papers and exams were approaching. He’d often get them on the lip, but lately he’d been getting several of them on the edge of his nostril. There would be itching and tingling for a few hours then a few fluid-filled blisters would erupt, and then finally, a yellow crust would form over the sores. These painful blisters looked awful for 7 to 10 days. Sam started taking the remedy Rhus Toxicodendron as soon as the tingling started and was surprised to find that the two very small blisters that did come out were uncomfortable for 3 days then nothing was left. The student understands that managing his stress is the answer to his herpes problem and promises to schedule an appointment with me to work on that issue. That way, Homeopathy can help by re-establishing the immune system to better control the stress. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease, so two people with the same problem may require different remedies. 5641884

No fluoride, for now, in Cornwall water todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - For more than two months Cornwall water has been without fluoride, and it looks like it could be a couple of more weeks before the chemical is put back. Coun. Syd Gardiner let it slip, on purpose, during a city council meeting Monday night that the city stopped adding fluoride to the water early this spring. The reason lies in concerns the city has about the worker safety when it comes to the building where the chemical additives are stored. City CAO Norm Levac was not available for comment to explain the specifics of the decision, but Gardiner said worker safety is a concern. “There needs to be proper ventialtion and they need to be able to put masks on in case there’s a spill,” he said. “It’s a worker safety issue, and that’s a priority for me.” But over the last couple of weeks Gardiner was getting miffed because he was unable to get an update on when the fluoride, which is added to drinking water to battle tooth decay, would be returned. Gardiner was told in a meeting Wednesday

morning it would be two more weeks. “I was somewhat upset I wasn’t getting any answers,” he said. John St. Marseille, Cornwall’s manager of municipal works, said Monday night the city is working as quickly as it can. “We have been working with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to secure the provision of fluoride,” he said. In an interview later St. Marseille, said a so-called “dosage feed pump” failed weeks ago. The pump adds the necessary chemicals to create fluoride for our drinking water. There were also leaks of the chemicals when the pump failed. St. Marseille said the city retained some experts who made a slew of health and safety recommendations concerning the storage area where the chemicals are kept, including improved breathing apparatuses, ventilation and practices should a spill occur. He was asked why the city didn’t have such policies in place already. “The standards change and we need to make sure we meet the new standards,” he said. “They get reviewed all the time.” St. Marseille said until the new policy measures are in place, the city drinking water will remain fluoride free.

Weather gods smiling on Mopar show

River Institute summer student, Sara Brand.

Roxanne Delage ROXANNEDELAGE@GMAIL.COM

CORNWALL, Ontario - There was not a cloud in the sky on Saturday, perfect weather for the 11th edition of the Mopar Magic Car Show, held in Lamoureux Park… And it’s a good thing too. “It’s so weather-dependant,” said Jack Notman, Notman Chrysler Dodge Jeep, event sponsor, about the attendance. “Because these people won’t take their cars out unless it’s perfect.” It was ‘perfect’ enough to draw approximately three hundred cars to what has now grown to become Canada’s largest single-day Mopar-only event, said Notman, who explained that Mopar meant that it was exclusively for Chrysler oriented vehicles. “The Special Events Mopar Caravan from Detroit is here with us. They make it an annual visit, which says a lot for the show, to tell you the truth, and for the town.” The event regularly draws a full range of cars in the teens and twenties up until modern muscle cars, of all values; “Some cars worth five or six thousand dollars, and lots of $100,000 cars here.” What is it that draws someone to this hobby? It’s probably from their youth, said Notman. “Uncle Fred had this, dad had that, Aunt Mary drove something. It seems to be what it is you recall from your youth, whether it’s the style, colour or make. A lot of people are mechanically minded so they like to tinker, but it’s definitely a nostalgic thing.” Year after year car enthusiasts from all over eastern Ontario and western Quebec, Vermont and New York State attend to compare notes, meet up with like-minded folks and to talk cars.

Pictured (L-R) are Sidney Nemes, with Aurel and Laua Vanier. Last year’s long distance award was from Timmins, he said. Sidney Nemes, from Montreal, who has attended the Mopar Magic Car Show for three years, brought his 2001 Dodge Viper (pictured in the foreground), which has had extensive modifications, he explained proudly. “As if the car wasn’t fast enough; It puts out about 650 horsepower. I try to stay out of the eyes of the police.” Aurel Vanier, and his wife Laura, of Ottawa, brought their 2009 Viper SRT (background), and 2005 Crossfire SRT6 (middle), respectively. For Vanier, who has won the people’s choice award at this show, a couple of years in a row, his passion for cars began at an early age growing up in Cornwall on the old #2 Highway. “We used to sit on the verandah and we’d count all the cars the - Chevys, the Dodges the Fords. I got to be an expert by the age of 8, and it grew from there.” Although his wife, Laura, married into the hobby, later on, she quite enjoys coming to the show. “It’s a beautiful event they do a great job.”

FLOODED WITH VISITORS: Open house for river institute Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences is hosting its annual Community Open House on July 3 from 2 to 6 p.m. This event welcomes everyone to visit the river institute, tour the facilities, talk to the scientists, and participate in lab experiments, sampling expeditions, and other fun science activities. “The river institute is proud of its scientific research and education programs that strive to promote the health of the St. Lawrence River,” said Dr. Jeff Ridal, executive director at the institute. “We always look forward to

Cornwall Community Hospital back in black adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The numbers are in - financial reports presented at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) annual general meeting last Thursday showed a modest operating surplus of $16,011, which paled in comparison to last year’s $246,772. But according to CCH CEO Jeanette Despatie what the local hospital had leftover from its 2013 fiscal year is due to an unprecedented rise in hospital visits. A trend she says is continuing into 201415. Despite the drastic change in budget surplus from the 2012-2013 financial

statement, CCH still boasted its third consecutive budget in the black. The new financial statement says the total revenue for 2013-2014 was $118,430,816 (Ministry of Health - 68 per cent, other patient care revenues - 17 per cent, community mental health programs - eight per cent, and other revenues seven per cent). Meanwhile, the hospital’s expensenses totalled $118,414,805 (compensation - 67 per cent, amortization supplies and building expenses - 18 per cent, community mental health programs - eight per cent, and medical and surgical supplies - seven per cent). Despatie was quick to point out the nearly $8 million spike from last year’s budget, which only allocated $110,743,413 towards

expenses. “We were pleased just to balance the budget at the end of March 2014 because we saw such high volumes of activity across the hospital,” said Despatie in a telephone interview with Seaway News. “We had months in the last quarter of the year where our occupancy rates were as high as 132 per cent. There were times when there were 20-30 extra beds open in the hospital just to manage the demand. Honestly, that was the greatest single impact on our expenditures last year.” In May, there were 5,200 visits to the emergency department. The highest volume CCH has ever seen in a single month. “We don’t know the answer. It’s across the board. It’s not one type of disease in particular,” she said. “Certainly, our population is aging and will continue to be a factor. It likely speaks to some of the increases.” Despatie says hospital staff is doing everything they can to keep the black budget streak alive and well for a fourth year. “We will have to ensure that we’re efficient as possible and work at maximizing funding opportunities,” she said. “It’s a real challenge.

The province of Ontario is not ‘flush’ these days as everyone knows it so it’s very difficult to realize more funding even when you have these needs with volume.” Besides celebrating a balanced budget, CCH officials also reflected on all the hospital’s recent accomplishments. At CCH, in the last decade, there were 500,000 ER visits, 6,000 babies born, 1,000,000 diagnostic procedures, 60,000plus acute discharges, an average of 1,500 catarac procedures a year, and over $144 million invested in building, equipment, and technology. “There have been so many changes from a positive prospective,” said Despatie. “Ten years ago, we were two small hospitals. Today, we are the largest provider of care in the area. We responded to our community’s needs and to Ontario’s healthcare strategy by integrating services, facilities, systems, and staff. The consolidation was complex but our people worked hard, always focusing on patient needs. In 2014, the consolidation will be complete with the entire acute-care team at the McConnell site.”

showcasing our work, our facility and most of all, our great staff and summer students.” Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with river institute research scientists, staff and students, and help out with research activities, like using nets to sample fish, collecting and identifying invertebrates from the river and examining specimens in the lab. River institute staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide more details about various research projects, education and camp programs that are offered. Summer time refreshments will be served. The river institute is located on the campus of St. Lawrence College Campus (under the wind turbine). I prefer to call it a ‘dramedy’ because there are so many beautiful poignant moments between the husband and the wife that draw you in. Some of it is very real to what you’d see in households today.” Marriage Can Be Hazardous to Your Health runs July 18, 19, and 20th (matinee 12:30), 24, 25, 26. he realizes that maybe she’s is too much for him to handle, and that he misses his former lifestyle. Rejuvenated, the ex-wife, who has, since their separation, become the woman he’d hoped she was when they were married, comes back into the picture. Eddie, seeing the exciting changes in his ex, following their split, falls back in love with her and begins cheating on his girlfriend. The plot thickens. Added to the mix is best friend to Eddie, Roger Billingsley (Grant Reso), who, for all intents and purposes, buffoons his way through the tangled love triangle. There are some great performances in this show, said Lacie Petrynka, director, who is thrilled to have company veterans and newcomers to the stage in the cast. “I love the dynamic between the two male characters, played by Terry Mazerolle and Grant Reso, she said, you can tell the chemistry between them immediately. “Grant is typical. Just throw him on a stage and let him go,” said Petrynka. “He’s got that beautiful comedic timing and he’s

CORNWALL, Ontario - South Stormont leaders have been pursuing a new medical clinic for quite some time. And with a few shovels of dirt, construction has officially started. A conceptual drawing of the new facility was unveiled at a groundbreaking ceremony on June 6. South Stormont council members and staff, St. Lawrence Medical Clinic doctors and staff, the Project Management team from CIBS Construction, and several members of the public were on hand to celebrate a new beginning in health care in Ingleside.

“We are very excited to see a shovel in the ground,” said Mayor Bryan McGillis. “There is a very tight timeline for the clinic to be completed and we thank everyone involved for making this happen. Doctors are needed and we anticipate this new facility will attract new professional services to this great community, South Stormont.” Loriann Harbers, South Stormont’s director of corporate services, says the almost 6,400-square-foot medical clinic will provide easy central access and the necessary professional services for teaching and expanded medical services. The clinic will have 11 exam rooms, a state of the art ECG room, and a lab. The new medical clinic is scheduled to open on Thorold Lane on August 29.

AGM at Seaway Valley health A Health Equity workshop, led by Salma Debs-Ivall, took place at the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre as part of activities surrounding the AGM at the facility. “It is not by chance that the subject of our workshop...is health equity,” said executive director Debbie de Wit. “Health equity does not mean everyone gets the same, but it does mean that everyone gets what they need.”

“The old grey mare, she ain’t what she used to be!” Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

Radio has changed from AM to FM; television has changed from black and white to colour; automatic transmissions have become standard; women’s necklines and hemlines have dived and climbed like the Snowbirds during their aerobatic routine over Parliament Hill on Canada Day. If you’ve ever flown in a de Havilland Rapide, a Ford TriMotor or a Douglas DC-3, you’ll understand what I’m sharing with you this week: air travel sure ain’t what she used to be! In the progression from those aircraft to Boeing 777 and Airbus 380… Hold it! When I used the word ‘progression’, that suggests progress, advancement, improvement and betterment. However, that

applies only to the airspeed of today’s airliners. Unfortunately, Point A to Point B travel time and comfort on most regional flights has regressed, deteriorated and become something to endure. First of all there are the delays due to traffic congestion as you approach any major airport. Then there’s the serpentine lines of passengers anxiously awaiting the assembly line process staffed by indifferent ticket agents, customs and immigration personnel and suspicious security staff. During the ritual involved in boarding a flight to Florida, my documentation (passport and boarding pass) was scrutinized by a succession of ten different people. I was asked to remove my shoes, belt and Tilley, empty my pockets, turn on my laptop, discard my too-large water bottle, pass through a metal detector and be wanded from head to toe. Once aboard the aircraft, to penetrate the phalanx of other passengers trying to force their over-sized carry-ons into the under-sized

over-crammed overhead bins, I had to exhibit the skills of a football player trying to get the ball through to the opposition’s goal line. It’s a corollary of Murphy’s Law that passengers in seats B and C take their places before the occupant of seat A arrives. Close behind is the would-be occupant F, who arrives after D and E have just been seated. Even if A or F were slender ballet dancers, they’d find it extremely difficult to access their window seats. To increase airlines’ profit margin, the aisles and seats have become narrower. However, today’s passengers are larger and heavier. By the way, at disembarkation time, it’s A and F who impulsively scramble to leave their seats first, as they have an urgent need to get their nicotine fix. A and F are also the ones who somehow managed to wedge the largest pieces of luggage into the overhead bins. I forgot to mention that A and F were in rows 19 and 20, but they could only find room in the overheads way back in rows 32 and 33. Like spawning salmon, they have to fight their

way against the flow of other disembarking passengers. Next week, I’ll share one of my recent airline travel experiences that proved to be surprisingly enjoyable. It was a rarity worth sharing!

WET AND WILD:

Waterfest roster of teams continues to grow Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It promises to be a wet and wild weekend in August when Cornwall Waterfest takes to Lock 19 in the old Cornwall Canal. Teams are still being sought for the popular summertime festival, which will include dragonboat races, live entertainment, vendors and an art show. Waterfest takes place Aug. 9. “We’re at about 16 to 18 teams right now,” said Cindy Rowe, executive director of the local Heart and Stroke Foundation

office, which sponsors Waterfest. “But a lot of those potential teams - we have verbal agreements from them.” Ultimately Waterfest organizers would like to see 20 teams competing in the event that sees teams rocket down the canal, poered only by the sweta and grunting of teams of rowers. In the past even seniors teams have taken part in the races. Rowe said those interested in practising with their team can call the Heart and Stroke office (613-938-8933) and set up a time to use an actual dragonboat. “We’ve entered into a partnership with

Frost blames former Kings’ ownership, not Colts deal for problems Adam Brazeau ADAM.BRAZEAU@TC.TC

CORNWALL, Ontario - New River

Kings owner Brock Frost said last weekend mismanagement led to problems for the team - not a controversial advertising agreement at the Ed Lumley Arena. In a public statement he issued via social media, Frost chilled rumours that the Canadian Jr. A Hockey League team is

the culprit behind the River Kings constant financial woes. “If I received a nickel for every comment made about the ‘Colts advertising dilemma,’ I would likely have enough money to pay for the entire upcoming season,” said Frost. “The truth of the matter is however that the

Colts are not responsible for the previous two seasons of failure. Rather, and quite bluntly, the Cornwall River Kings failed due to top-down mismanagement and lack of vision.” Read the entire statement at www. facebook.com/thecornwallriverkings.

You say you’re in shape and you believe that a small round of golf isn’t going to scare you. Okay, let’s go! For the first hour, let’s hit some balls on the driving range, then after, we’ll go work on our putting on the practice green. It’s a beautiful 30_C, so we’re going to play our 18 holes on foot. Here’s a considerable program, even for the strongest. Especially if you’re not really in shape. On the other hand, if you are in shape and you participate in regular exercise sessions, you’ll increase your physical and mental endurance. Be in shape and...at peace: that means, empty your mind of all your worries so you can concentrate better on golf. Positive thinking is an important asset. You must also learn to breathe, walk with a regular pace, and develop an attitude of confidence. Whatever your age, better physical fitness and a good state of mind will allow you to play and perform better.

Stay in control Whether you choose to play golf to get some outdoor exercise, or to compete with yourself or with others, it is important to play with civility and tolerance. There’s hardly a course that hasn’t seen the unpleasant attitude of some golfer who has lost control. While these “bursts” might have taken place in the past, it’s almost certain they will happen again.

When you play golf, it is understood that you have agreed to adopt a decent behaviour and at least a minimum of etiquette. A player who cannot accept a missed shot is no fun for anyone. Excuses and aggressive behaviour will only spoil the mood. In addition to upsetting the other players, it will ruin your concentration and performance.

Baseball history this week Thom Racine Sports THOM_RACINE@HOTMAIL.COM

Every now and then when researching a sporting event for a story, I like to pull out the old this date in history column. Since it’s baseball season and the history of America’s game is so rich, I thought a Canada DayIndepence Day, week of memories was in order. See if you can stump grandpa with a few of these. 1905 With the Giants leading the Brooklyn Superbas, 11-1, Archibald ‘Moonlight’ Graham makes his major league debut in the bottom of the eighth inning as a defensive replacement in right field at Brooklyn’s Washington Park. The career minor leaguer, who will not have a major league at-bat in his only appearance in the big leagues, will become immortalized by W.P. Kinsella’s book “Shoeless Joe” and the movie based on the author’s work, “Field of Dreams.” 1905 The Philadelphia A’s scored two runs in the 20th inning making Rube Waddell the winning pitcher over Cy Young

and the Red Sox 4-2. Both pitchers completed the twenty inning affair. 1908 Ever wonder why baseballs pitchers are given the Cy Young award? At New York’s Hilltop Park, Red Sox legend Cy Young no-hits the Highlanders (Yankees), 8-0. It would be the third time the 41-year old has accomplished the feat. 1939 On Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium, ‘the Iron Horse’s’ uniform number 4 will be the first ever to be retired. Gehrig was too moved to speak to the crowd, but changes his mind with encouragement from manager Joe McCarthy and described himself as “the luckiest man on the face of this earth”. 1941 In a doubleheader with the Senators, Joe DiMaggio ties and then breaks the American League consecutive game hitting streak of 41 established by George Sisler. In the opener he tied the record with a double off Dutch Leonard, and in the second game he claimed the record all o himself with a seventh inning single against Walt Masterson. 1941 A few days later, in front of 52,832 fans at Yankee Stadium, DiMaggio hits a three-run homer off Red Sox Dick Newsome to extend his hitting streak to 45 games surpassing Wee Willie Keeler’s 1897 major league mark of 44 straight games with a hit.

1932 A city of Boston law restricting games within 1000 feet of a church on Sundays, is tempted when the first Sunday game is played at Fenway Park. The Red Sox penance that day was a 13-2 loss to the Yankees. 1963 One of baseball’s most memorable pitching duels plays out when Giants’ Juan Marichal and Braves’ Warren Spahn both work 15 scoreless innings before Willie Mays ends the game with a walk off homer off

Spahn in the bottom of the 16th giving the Giants a 1-0 win. 1973 After an 8-7 extra-inning loss to L.A. at Riverfront Stadium, the Reds found themselves 11 games behind the firstplace Dodgers. Pete Rose, who will win the batting title with a .338 average and the big red machine find their game and finish the season 60-26 and win the Western Division by 3.5 games.

Radio station cuts hurt, even at this office Todd Lihou TODD.LIHOU@TC.TC

Talk about a shocker. Last week’s decision by Corus to axe its news department, sending three people, all of whom I considered friends, to the unemployment line, sucks. There’s no other way to put it. For the first time in nearly 70 years the local radio station in Cornwall will not have a news division – hardly the endgame owners of CJSS had when it went on the air back in the 1940s. It was, I am told, a decision based solely on economics. People, apparently, are getting their news from other sources. The internet, we can all safely assume. I guess it means no one is untouchable, because thecornwalldaily.com was our chief online competition here at Seaway News, and they did a helluva job. I often spoke with news director Bill Kingston about how our two websites were often duking it out to break news first. It felt weird to have the radio going at noon today, and hear only the sounds of Huey Lewis and the News, instead of the voices of either Kingston, Jesse Tieman or Kasia Mazun. The strategy at the station now, according

to general manager Mark Dickie, will be to include news broadcasts during the breakfast shows of both 101.9 and 104.5, but that will constitute the bulk of their news presence. Without anyone actually collecting news, one can safely assume they’ll be using wire copy, and stealing from the rest of us, to report the comings and goings of Cornwall and area. The thievery is fine with me. Journalism is an exercise in stealing. We constantly check to see what the other guy has, to make sure we aren’t missing anything. But this speaks to the decline of journalism in small cities. It probably doesn’t mean very much to the guy who stocks the shelves at SCM for $14 an hour, but it should. Newspapers have been grappling with the decline of the business for years. When I started in this business we had six reporters at the Standard-Freeholder, and five editors. I think they’re down to something like three and three at the Freeholder today, with whispers of more cuts on the horizon. Rumour has it there could come a day when the local daily has nothing but reporters in the newsroom. Apparently in Belleville, at The Intelligencer, there are no longer newspaper editors. People in Kingston call the shots in Belleville, and what few reporters left are working in a rudderless office.

Why should this matter to the guy I mentioned before, who stocks shelves at SCM? He wants to know why the police had a portion of a city street closed down. He wants to know why his property taxes are increasing. And he wants to know about the little boy around the corner, whose family is organizing a fundraiser because he is battling cancer. Those types of stories are our bread and butter. And they’re important in small communities like Cornwall. Do you really think the Ottawa Sun, the Citizen or CTV News are going to send reporters down here for those types of stories? No way – because they’re suffering too. I get that companies must remain profitable, shareholders demand a return on their investment and sometimes the revenue isn’t there.

But in this case, Corus got it wrong, and has done Cornwall and the surrounding community a disservice. That’s not to say this community will go without local news and opinion when it wants it. Our news operation has never been stronger, in fact we have added staff and columnists in the last year. We’re also the home of regular news updates, as they happen, throughout the day, as well as your onlime home for obituaries and video. The stories that matter to you will be faithfully reported at cornwallseawaynews. com, and in our printed product, without hesitation. But to suggest that today, kinda feels like I’m kicking some friends while they’re down. I’m going to miss Bill, Jesse and Kasia. And I’m guessing you will too.

announced they will kill the proposal if elected. On the surface, this seems an empty threat. But, one cannot be sure. The First Nations, environmental groups and many politicians of all stripes have already pledged to fight this project. And it also depends on the Calgary-based company meeting all the conditions set by the National energy Board. The company has a huge task before it. It will have to explain and consult with the aboriginals and others who are concerned and worried about this project. Many are rightly worried and concerned the pipeline will likely threaten caribou, grizzly bears and other wildlife and the scenic environment. This pipeline has been in the making

since 2002. It is 1,178-kilometre long. The pipeline will transport up to 525,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta to British Columbia. Oil will then be loaded onto supertankers and shipped to new oil-hungry Pacific Rim markets. Mulcair has spoken about a severe threat to social order while Trudeau said the pipeline threatens the B.C. coastal economy and jobs of thousands who live along the shore. If all goes well – I doubt if this will happen – the pipeline could start by next year and will be operational by 2018 or 2019. Shipping Canadian oil to new customers has become a priority for Ottawa. Canada is trying its best to enter the world stage as a major oil producer in the world.

Green light for pipeline Sultan Jessa Opinion SJESSA@SYMPATICO.CA

The Tory government in Ottawa will not have a smooth sailing explaining to Canadians why the long-awaited and controversial Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline is one project the country needs to prosper. This pipeline is between the Alberta oil sands and the British Columbia coast. The $6.5-billion project is contingent on Enbridge satisfying about 210 conditions placed on the proposal by the regulatory review panel. The way the green light for this massive project was announced make you wonder if

the Conservatives are now having a second thought on this project. The announcement was brief and not many ministers were around to answer questions from the haunting media. It all boils down to the 2015 federal elections. The Conservatives have to keep and win many ridings in Alberta and British Columbia. At this time, it looks like the MPs will have an extremely tough time trying to convince Albertans and the British Columbians this project will bring wealth, prosperity and economic development to these regions. The pipeline is a hot potato. The Opposition New Democrats led by Thomas Mulcair and the Liberals headed by Justin Trudeau, the son of Canada’s former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau have openly

Council raise doesn’t make sense right now Dear editor: I was dismayed to find out that council had to hire a consultant to justify a pay raise of between 18 & 40% . I thought at first this was a joke. I fully understood when I filled out the papers to put my in to run for council what the

salary was & I readily accepted this. When I look around & see people lucky enough to get raises of 2 to 5% if in fact they are employed in the first place, I have a really hard time with 18 to 40%. I can not in all good consciousness justify this kind of exorbitant

activity. I have added my name to a growing list of people opposed to this ridiculous example of greed. I hope that the powers that be will see the reason behind dropping this, otherwise, I will fight it tooth & nail in any way I can.

I fully understood & accepted the benefits & responsibilities when I signed on. I will not participate in a hog run to feed at the trough. Geoff Stephenson Cornwall Ontario

‘Silly season’ has begun here in Fun City EDITORIAL@cornwallseawaynews.com

The ‘Silly Season’, this time around, got a jump on the official start of the summer season, which was ushered in on June 21. Unlike the summer solstice, the ‘Silly Season’ comes but every four years, which is a good thing, and stretches into October. The start of the ‘Silly Season’ can’t be found on a calendar, there is no fixed starting date. It sort of creeps onto the political landscape like early-morning fog. There are, however, tell-tale signs to alert the unwashed that the ‘Silly Season’ has arrived. In our case, it was city council’s dumb decision to get a legal opinion on a court injunction, something that would cost thousands of dollars, to try and stop Cornwall Community Hospital from moving its laboratory’s histology services to a regional setup in Ottawa, one that serves all 16 hospitals in our region. Council had invited the hospital representatives to appear before open council to explain/justify the transfer. The hospital board, which doesn’t answer to the snap of a city council’s finger, said no thanks. Perhaps at a later date. This riled some members of city council. One called it an insult. This led to the harebrained idea of a possibly court injunction to stop the move. First step was to get a legal opinion.

For the record, something some councillors seemed unaware of is that hospital CEO Jeanette Despatie didn’t make the decision to say no to council. It was a board decision. Just as mindboggling is the fact not a single member of council contacted the CEO or any board member after the transfer was announced in April. Incredibly, not a single member of council contacted the CEO or the board after the transfer was made public in April. Not one! Instead, they ran with second-hand information on an issue that hardly showed up on the public concern radar and doesn’t put patients in any danger. Folks are more concerned about wait times and not being able to find a family doctor. Just for the record, the board that council is upset with is made up of outstanding citizens, including four doctors - one of whom is the president of the medical staff - and a lawyer. They do a commendable job trying to juggle rising health care costs and budget freezes by the provincial government. They can’t raise taxes to fund pet projects. Interesting that over the years none of the slew of crippling cutbacks forced upon the local hospital(s) by provincial governments has drawn any kind of response from city council. But for some reason, this one did. This was all about political grandstanding in front of the television cameras in an election year. Oh, and the bill for that legal opinion by an Ottawa law firm? For some reason, council felt it had to go outside the city for this no brainer. The report that told council it didn’t have

a chance in hades of securing an injunction and that a hospital board doesn’t have to kowtow to a city council came with an invoice for $4,644.30 (HST included). (Ed. note - forget about medical school, get your kid in law school. Some councillors will fluff off the $4,644.30 as chump change ... chump change is when it is not coming out of their pockets. Welcome to the ‘Silly Season’. *** The death of a young driver at Cornwall Motor Speedway brought back memories of a Cornwall stock car driver who lost his life on June 19, 1969. Bob Dickenson, who operated a Gulf gas station at Pitt and Sixth streets, was killed in a crash at the Maxville Fairgrounds. Dickenson was just 29. Dickenson’s wife, Jean, witnessed the horrific crash from the stands. This week she recalled the incident as if it were yesterday. “Bob tried to cut in on the fourth corner and hit the embankment, flew in the air and his car came down on another. He died instantly when he crushed his chest on the steering wheel and ruptured his pulmonary artery. “I was devastated.” Dickenson was a fierce competitor, who, along with his brother Lawrence, was among the top broomball players of the day, when the game was as big as hockey on the local sports landscape. A nice touch by the owners of Cornwall Speedway might be to create a Bob Dickenson Memorial Trophy in memory of the only Cornwall stock car driver to lose his

life in a crash. *** Once upon a time one of the most prized high school track and field trophies in the region was the Meikel Cup competed for by several schools in Cornwall and area, among them CCVS, SLHS, Aultsville, Morrisburg and Iroquois. This was a time when the Athletic Grounds had one of the best 400-yard tracks in the province. The track was ripped up to make room for the Bob Turner Memorial Centre. The Meikel Cup competition petered out around the time the the St. Lawrence Seaway project uprooted villages along the St. Lawrence between Cornwall and Iroquois. But where did the coveted cup end up? If you know of the trophy’s whereabouts, contact Judy Bobka, 613-932-2720. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR When July 1 was called Dominion Day and the Union Jack was displayed in glorious fashion in downtown shop windows. When school kids sang God Save the Queen and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, with their right hand over their heart, to start the school day and chances were that the male principal was a war veteran. When schools displayed a portrait of the Queen in the foyer. TRIVIA ANSWER In 1956 fire heavily damaged The Royal Hotel at McConnell Avenue and Montreal Road. It was rebuilt but closed in 2004. YOUNG AT ART:

Aspiring painters display their talent Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Budding young artists proudly displayed their minimasterpieces during a special outdoor event recently. Students from Hye’s Art class in Cornwall hosted the fourth annual Kids’ Art Exhibition with their teacher Hye Kung-Kennedy. The South Korean artist welcomed dozens of parents and city residents to her home studio on Holy Cross Boulevard to admire the artwork of her pupils in a large tent on her front yard. Young artists Olivia Kennedy (Hye’s daughter), 10, Agathe Fontaine, 11, and Alex Rivette, 12, spent months fine-tuning their paintings and drawings for the art show. “It’s fun to paint,” said Rivette. “I’m glad we get to share our art with the community.” For more information, visit the Hye’s Art Facebook page facebook.com/HyesArt.

graduates at the 47th Annual Convocation Ceremonies on June 5 and 6. The awards, with a total value of $24,550, are provided by private donors, businesses, industry associations, community organizations, and the Loyalist College Foundation. “The awards are a wonderful way to recognize the recipients’ commitment to excellence in the classroom and in our communities,” said Loyalist President Maureen Piercy. “During their post-

Hat tip to the news division formerly employed by Corus in Cornwall. Professionals all around. Lotto winner Rita Cooper with the line of the year after claiming $1 million in prize money. After winning she kissed her husband and exclaimed: “That’s the first time you’ve kissed a millionaire.”

Lift-Off, Ribfest, Waterfest, Cornfest… the list of activities available to entertain you this summer is incredible. Also make a stop at the Glengarry Highland Games, and the plethora of community fairs in our region.

Fluoride hasn’t been in our water for months, here in Cornwall. Critics of the fluoridation process are pleased, but local health advocates aren’t. We’d like to know why it took a missive from Coun. Syd Gardiner at the most recent council meeting for this to become public. We think the city should have released something on this when it became apparent it would be weeks for the issue to be rectified.

Justin Trudeau in Cornwall and area for Canada Day. Nice.

How many people out there become soccer fans every four years?

Congrats to TC Media Cornwall general manager Rick Shaver and his wife Brenda. Their daughter Christine married her sweetheart Grant Burke on the weekend.

Seamus has one philosophy: if it’s not Scottish, it’s crap. Or is it Irish? We’re not sure, since we can barely understand a word Seamus says since his mouth is almost always full of dog food. Bring in or email your favourite pet photo along with a small caption and we’ll publish it so all our readers can enjoy it, too! With the summer weather, here are a few tips for keeping your dog cool this summer. • Don’t leave your dog in a parked car in the summer, even in the shade with the window left a few inches open. Heatstroke can set in within minutes. Dogs left in parked cars also risk being harassed or stolen. • Know the signs for heatstroke: heavy, loud breathing, a staggering gait, bright red gum tissue and tongue. If heatstroke is suspected, wet down your dog and get him/her to the vet as quickly as possible. Both heatstroke and heat exhaustion can result in brain damage, heart failure or death in a short period of time. Thick-coated breeds and mixes are particularly vulnerable, although any breed may be at risk. • Avoid transporting your dog in the cargo section of a plane or take a direct, morning or evening flight. The hold can become extremely hot. • Avoid running with your dog during hot weather.

Honesty. . . My Favorite aniMal

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.” She said I wasn’t funny, but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, “Colonel Sanders.” Guess where I am now...

Lillian Dawson would like to send her thanks to her wonderful neighbours for all the work they have done around her house. To Tom, Mitch, Shawn, Collette and Richard. A great thank you to all!

From a reader: “I have a huge problem with the many people who advertise yard sales but are too lazy to properly remove the signs off city street signs, light posts, street scapes etc. once the yard sale is done. The City should pay a visit to the address and give them a fine.” Our advice to people who insist on wearing flip-flops: “Please do not wear flip-flops if your feet look like you could swoop out of the sky and catch your dinner.” Thank you, Internet.

Fabric softeners are waxy materials that are related to soap. They work by coating your laundry with waxy lubricants and humectant chemicals. The lubricants let fibers slide past each other, reducing wrinkling. They also separate a napped fabric’s fibers and stand them on end, which makes a towel, for instance, feel fluffy. The humectancts help the fabric retain moisture to dissipate the static charges that would otherwise cause clothes to cling and sparks to fly when you pull them apart. There are three basic types of fabric softeners. RINSE liquids are added to the wash during the rinse cycle. DRYER SHEETS are absorbed with softener. When you put a sheet into the dryer along with the laundry, contact and heat release the softener. DETERGENTS with FABRIC softeners are added at the start of the wash cycle. The most effective is liquid softeners but DRYER SHEETS soften to roughly the same degree and detergents with fabric softener is the lesser of the two.

Invite a toad to lunch: To create habitat for toads on your property, provide areas of ground-hugging vegetation, such as ferns and grasses, as cover and shelter from the heat. Add a pond with some shallow areas and gently sloping sides to allow easy entry and exit. Allow leaves to stay on some of your garden beds and avoid the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers where possible. If you are adding a toad house, place it in a cool, shady part of your garden. Be sure not to move toads (or frogs) to your property, but allow them to come on their own when their habitat needs are met. They will help your garden by eating cutworms and earwigs in great numbers and help by controlling certain pest populations. Great job again by Canada Day festivity organizers in Cornwall and throughout the region. Without the tireless efforts by these volunteers, thousands of people would miss out on all the festivities that take place every year. Our hat is off to you.

Pet Tip of the Week: Dogs get hot too! Please remember to keep your dogs in a cool safe place this summer. Always make sure they have access to fresh clean water in a non-spill bowl and that they are out of the sun. Also, planning your summer vacation? Check ontariospca.ca/ factsheets for tips on finding the right pet sitter or boarding kennel for your pet.

Water Conservation in the Yard: Gather rainwater to water bedding plants. Use mulches such as wood chips and bark to help prevent evaporation. Attach a timer to your sprinkler. Water your lawn in the morning, when it is not windy and only when the lawn shows signs of needing it.

It Takes Two … In the frozen foods department of our local grocery store, I noticed a man shopping with his son. As I walked by, he checked something off his list and I heard him whisper conspiratorially to the child, “You know, if we really mess this up, we’ll never have to do it again.”
