CORNWALL, Ontario - The Olympics of the plowing world are just 18 months away but work remains to educate many in the area about the significance of the event. The 2015 International Plowing Match will take place in September in Finch and preparations are already taking place for an event that will draw upwards of 100,000 people to the area.
“Hotels are already starting to book up for it,” said Terry Besner, economic development officer for the United Counties of SDG. At a Thursday morning media event organized by the United Counties that covered a range of topics, municipal officials said a campaign will be undertaken to educate locals about the ins and outs of plowing matches and why farmers and agriculture experts go ga-ga over the event.
“It’s a huge opportunity for us,” said Tim Simpson, counties CAO, adding the local region will be showcased on a grand stage. One could use all the adjectives imaginable to describe what the plowing match is - the Super Bowl of the agriculture world...the Olympics...the World’s Fair…the list goes on. It’s the largest show of its kind in North America, and generates as much as $20 million worth from economic spinoffs thanks
to tens of thousands of tourists that visit the event each year. A whopping 60 per cent of patrons travelled a total of 40,000 km to attend the 2012 plowing match in Roseville, Ont. near Kitchener. Besner said the United Counties has pledged $100,000 to the organizing committee for the local event. Cornwall is mulling a similar donation, but has yet to put up the cash and may do so as the event draws closer.

CORNWALL, Ontario - City hall had to send out a press release last week to clear the air over more work being done near Cornwall’s waterfront that had some residents worried about the fate of a popular baseball park.
The city is completing improvements to the storm sewer drain at Legion Park, which is adjacent to a chemical tank project that has raised alarm bells in Cornwall. Residents leapt to social media last week, suggesting the tank farm work was spilling over into Legion Park. Not so, said the city. “As part of the project, a storm sewer
drain is being added to the ditch along Bergeron Drive,” said a municipal press release. “Improvements will also be made in the area of the parking lot south of the baseball diamonds. “The work is not associated in any way to the nearby storage tanks site on the Cornwall Harbour.” The work is being completed by Malyon
Excavation. It was originally scheduled to be completed last fall, but is being done now to ensure the improvements are complete by the spring and the start of the baseball season. The present pipe installation work will be complete by the end of the week, and the contractor will then return in May to complete sod restoration.

Brian’s Day honours local sports legend

CORNWALL, Ontario - Thousands honoured a man revered for his vital role in carving out a sports scene for girls minor hockey and baseball/softball leagues in the city this Saturday. Brian ‘Russ’ Tardiff was floored to see the amount of support flooding in at a fundraiser organized to help him and his family in his personal journey with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Brian’s Day, hosted by Tardiff’s family, close friends, and the Cornwall Girls Hockey Association (CGHA) mixed hockey games, live music, and a silent auction to raise an expected $15,000. “It’s absolutely overwhelming the support - the way the hockey and softball community came together for someone like me who is living with ALS,” said Tardiff.
Angie Baker, event co-organizer, said that when the CGHA announced their second major annual fundraising event was in support of Tardiff - family and friends quickly decided to join the team. “This is a very special day for a very special man who has been a big part of the sports world in Cornwall,” said Baker. She was moved, but not surprised by the massive turnout and support from sponsors and hockey legends like Doug Gilmour and Walter Gretzky who donated signed sports memorabilia. Before two-time Olympic gold medalist and Cornwall native Lori Dupuis signed autographs at Brian’s Day, she spoke to Seaway News about the importance of the event. Tardiff is her cousin. “It’s amazing that everybody comes together in a community like this to help out,” said Dupuis. “I’m so happy to be a part it.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Ginette Forgues always knew she wanted to explore a career in the legal world - it just took a little time. The local retired educator has been tapped as one of 21 new justices of the peace that will assume the bench later this year. Forgues will sit in the Cornwall area. She said in an interview when she was completing her schooling more than 30 years ago she had a choice between teaching and entering the legal field. “I was anxious to get married and start a family,” she said, adding a career in law would have required more schooling. “I opted for education and I loved my career.” But three decades of schools, classroom and students as both a teacher and a longtime principal are being traded for courtrooms, lawyers and prisoners beginning this spring with nine months of intensive training. “I always wanted to pursue the legal field,” said Forgues. “I’m still young and have the ability to give back to the community.” Her dream was no secret among family members, and it was her daughter-in-law Robyn Hurtubise who brought an ad to Forgues’ Cornwall home last year along with a strong suggestion that she file an application. “She was the real wind beneath my wings,” said Forgues, who is married to husband Jacques Frappier and has two children, daughter Cassandre and son Gabriel. A detailed application was filed with the Ministry
of the Attorney General, and the selection process included an interview with 15 members of the legal community, including judges, justices and lawyers. Forgues was put at ease by the “warmth” of the questions put to her by the panel. “It was a very welcoming interview,” she said. “They made me Forgues feel at ease.” Forgues finally got the call last week advising her of her success. She’s also received many phone calls from local judges and justices with messages of congratulations. “It shows you that it is really a tight-knit community,” said Forgues. Her unofficial swearing-in takes place March 12, and later this year she will be officially sworn-in as a justice. FAST FACTS (courtesy of the Ministry of the Attorney General): Justice of the Peace Ginette Forgues has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ottawa and an Ontario teacher’s certificate from Laurentian University. She is bilingual and has worked as a teacher and school principal for the French Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario for the past 34 years. She has also worked as a mentor for new principals and vice-principals. She has been a volunteer for the Optimist Club of Cornwall, Palais d’Alexandria Retirement Home, and the Cornwall Community Hospital.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Hundreds of newly-installed Wi-Fi access points have been introduced at the Cornwall Community Hospital. Through a partnership with Meru Networks, CCH now offers one of the most sophisticated and powerful Wi-Fi systems permitting patients and staff to have the world literally at their fingertips. The new system, dubbed the Uninterrupted Care Network (UCN), has enabled CCH to move towards the implementation of a fullyintegrated clinical system, making patients’ electronic health records accessible from any mobile device. “This will be the foundational infrastructure we need to support and sustain our information management, information technology strategic plans,” said Mario Alibrando, Director of IT.
“There is nothing more frustrating than going somewhere without Wi-Fi.” With more bandwidth and about 20 times the speed than one would have in a local restaurant or café, Alibrando explained that this system was designed specifically to meet the needs of busy healthcare organizations. “With this solution, we are able to keep medical devices, like IV pumps, on separate frequency channels, so the information is streamlined directly to the database. This will facilitate our initiatives moving forward,” he added. The system is also built with a secondary mainframe, so if for some reason the main system were to go offline, the back-up system would automatically detect it and turn itself on. “Anytime you’re dealing with any sort of critical electronics, having an extra level of preparedness and substructure is invaluable,” said Alan Greig, VP of Support Services.

CORNWALL, Ontario – United Counties Warden Eric Duncan is concerned about the red tape being created as a result of wideranging accountability rules announced by Queen’s Park. Premier Kathleen Wynne stated the sweeping legislation, which would give Ontario’s ombudsman new powers to investigate municipalities, school boards, and publicly funded universities, is a way to ensure an open, accountable, and accessible government. The Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) sees it differently. They consider it an attempt to micromanage municipal
government. Duncan agrees. “I’m all for accountability, but I want to make sure that it’s sensible because we’re already doing it at the municipal level, we already have a lot of measures in place,” said Duncan. If the legislation passes, municipalities would have to revamp their current process of reviewing service delivery complaints or have them investigated by Ombudsman Andre Marin. The counties warden stated that he’s anxious to know what it will cost to fulfill these new responsibilities. “We have a lot of measures in place in terms of service delivery that we do as an organization. So, I’m quite concerned about
the level of involvement from staff or the amount of money and time it’s going to take to do this,” said Duncan. “I’m always paranoid of the frivolous requests that come in.” He feels the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) are getting a mixed message from the provincial government. Duncan was one of several representatives of the United Counties who recently returned from the annual Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference in Toronto. An event he considers an opportune time to lobby the government and create awareness, particularly in advance of the provincial budget. Duncan noted that while at the conference, Brampton-Springdale MPP Linda Jeffries said she sees the municipal government as a mature

CORNWALL, Ontario – Inspired by family tragedy, Angela Pilon is raising awareness and funds for mental health - and she’s not alone. Pilon’s mother, Monique Rozon, recently passed away after struggling with mental health issues. With a lot of help from her friends at A Lil’ Pole Fitness and Om Satya Yoga, 32-year-old Pilon was able to raise $1,200 for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The two local businesses turned their oneyear anniversary party on Friday into a tribute for Rozon – their former building owner, patron, and dear friend. “I never thought at a young age that I’d be burying my mom,” said Pilon. “The outpour of support from community members and businesses has really helped us through this difficult situation.” For Sandy Banga, owner of Om Satya Yoga, the event was a chance to take mental health awareness into her own hands. “Monique Rozon was not just the owner of this studio, but a great friend,” said Banga.

I wanted the community to be aware of how much mental health can affect people.” Nancy Connah attended the event to support a fellow co-worker. She applauded the organizers for finding such an innovative and energetic way to promote good mental health. A Lil’ Pole Fitness and Om Satya Yoga’s first business anniversary (in memory of Rozon) featured contests, strength challenges, pole fitness and yoga demonstrations, a silent auction, and Indian head massages. “I learned a lot about mental health awareness thanks to the literature they had available,” said Connah. “I know some friends who need help and now I have the resources.” That was the silver lining Pilon was hoping for. “We’re trying to build awareness and make something positive out of a dark situation,” she said. “In her honour, we will promote mental health in hopes we can help at least one person.” Pilon encourages anyone wrestling with mental health issues to reach out to family members and accept help from others.

WARRANT Adeel Asif, 21 of Montreal was arrested on March 10th, 2014 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that on March 26th, 2013 the man failed to attend court as directed in order to answer to a dangerous drive charge. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the man as his whereabouts were unknown. On March 10th, 2014 the Cornwall Community Police attended Montreal and assumed custody of the man as Montreal had the man in custody on the strength of the warrant. He was transported to Cornwall and held for a bail hearing. A 30-year-old South Mountain man was arrested on March 10th, 2014 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that during the month of February and March, 2014 the man continually contacted his ex-girlfriend who resides in Cornwall by way of phone calls despite having been warned by police not to. A warrant was issued for his arrest as his whereabouts were unknown. On March 10th, 2014 the Cornwall Community Police assumed custody of the man from the Winchester area OPP as they had the man in custody on the strength of the warrant. He was transported to Cornwall and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter. BREACH Shawnna Chartrand, 21 of Cornwall was arrested on March 7th, 2014 and charged with failing to appear for prints. It is alleged that on February 25th, 2014 the woman failed to attend for prints as required and an investigation ensued. On March 7th, 2014 the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on a later date.

Cricketers the stars of International Sport Day CORNWALL, Ontario - CORNWALL, Ontario - For Jamshed Sadiq the chance to get out on the field for a cricket match in Canada, in March, is a rare thing. To play the game with a bunch of Canadians who didn’t know the first thing about cricket, the opportunity was even more unique. About 30 cricket players from far-off places like Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka took part in International Sport Day at the Benson Centre. The event was hosted by the Local Immigration Partnership, a branch of the Eastern Ontario Training Board, as a chance to get people from different ethnicities taking
part in sporting events. Both soccer and cricket were played Sunday afternoon - but the focus was reserved for cricket, a sport which few Canadians have ever played, and even fewer understand. “It’s nice to bring people together to do things like this,” said Sadiq, part of a mixed bag of players from both overseas and the Cornwall area which took the field. “Canada is really in the building process with cricket. “But it is getting better.” And he added the opportunity to break down cultural barriers is important. “If you interact with guys from a good team, they can help to build bridges,” he said.
That sentiment was music to the ears of Kimberly Vass, project delivery assistant with the training board, which organized the event in conjunction with local sponsors like Supply Chain Management and Kensington Park Recruitment. “We were thrilled to see so many smiling faces out today,” she said. “It shows that regardless of background, people can find common ground and have a good time.” Jamshed Sadiq gives Jordan Rupert some tips on how to properly hold a cricket bat, at International Sport Day, held at the Benson Centre in Cornwall.

It’s time to revamp the nomination process for municipal elections Todd Lihou TODD.LIHOU@TC.TC
When I was in Grade 5 a collection of us got together and decided it would be a good idea to organize an election for class president – probably because the evening before we had seen an episode of the Cosby Show or Diff’rent Strokes that dealt with similar subject matter. After the morning recess it was all but assured (as far as students were concerned) we would be holding an election, and by the time the bell rang for classes to resume in the afternoon, I was convinced I had the support necessary to make a run for president. I had campaigned for support and curried favours from just about everyone in Andy Petepiece’s class – so victory was mine. But Petepiece had other plans. “Sir, can we elect a class president?” “No.” And thus ended my fledgling political career before it even got started. It taught me a backhanded lesson about politics that still kind of resonates today: do your homework, and find out which way the wind is blowing before getting excited about something – even an election campaign. I bring this up because it’s time to consider changing the process in which municipal candidates find themselves running for office and turn the nomination process into something that actually resembles its
namesake. The way it works now is a candidate shows up at city hall, plunks down their money ($200 for mayor, $100 for councillors) and signs on the bottom – whamo, they’re deemed a candidate. Of course the city clerk has to sign off on the nomination and make it legal, but that’s basically a rubber stamp affair. The problem I have with the process is that it’s not really a nomination, because in reality a candidate is nominating themselves. There’s no oversight, even early in the process, to ensure the electorate is getting good bang for their voting buck. It seems clear to me that even before their name appears on the ballot candidates should be campaigning for support. Which is why I think candidates should be mandated to collect 25 or even 30 signatures from residents within the riding before they can file their nomination papers. That’s not a huge number, when you consider it takes thousands of votes (4,000 is typically the threshold to squeak into the final council position) to actually win a seat at the table. But it serves as an early indication as to how successful your campaign will ultimately be, because if you can’t get 30 people to sign your papers in the early going, how do you expect to convince another 4,000 you’re worthy of the job?
I’m not exactly re-inventing the wheel here. If you want to run as a candidate in a federal election you have to get a whopping 100 signatures (50 if you’re in a remote district) that must be duly witnessed before your name can appear on a ballot. City hall requires signatures on a petition when it considers a complaint from residents on anything from sidewalk repairs to a new skateboard park. So why are we letting anybody with $200 burning a hole in their pocket and the ability to sign their name suddenly become a candidate? I’m as democratic as the next guy, and this missive is not an attempt to short-circuit an election process that has brought us a slew of competent (and some not-so competent) leaders over the years. I am not a huge fan of the Oscars but I found the 2014 Academy Awards ceremony hosted by Ellen DeGeneres neat and entertaining. It was a near perfect presentation viewed by millions of people around the world. DeGeneres opened the show and entertained people with razor sharp jokes. She spent a great deal of time poking fun at some of the best known stars. The host recalled how Jennifer Lawrence tripped last year when
heading to the stage to accept her statuette. “If you win tonight, we should bring you the Oscar,” she quipped. One entertaining moment was the encounter with the pizza delivery man. No one thought this was for real. But, Edgar Martirosyan, the owner of Bi Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria in West Hollywood, showed up with several pizzas. The next day he collected more than $1,000 in tips from DeGeneres, Brad Pitt and others. The owner of the pizzeria said he was surprised and shocked, calling the experience “cool.” The exposure was a big moment and excellent for business. He even got calls from his home country of Armenia and Russia. Martirosyan said he will share the
tips with his staff. This was the biggest tip he had ever received. My personal best moment was the recognition of the great American film star Sidney Poitier. I met Poitier in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, when I was a young reporter. Poitier, accompanied by Angelina Jolie, presented the best director award to Alfonso Cuaron, who became the first Latino to win the most sought after and prestigious award for “Gravity.” This came 50 years after Poitier became the first African-American to win the best actor award for “Lilies in the Field,” in 1964. This was a historic win for Poitier. Some people were offended when Poitier received the

In 2014, Ontarians will elect approximately 2,800 council members and 700 school board trustees across the province. They should all be seeking support to govern our communities before their name even appears on the ballot.

Do your homework before turning over your prized possessions Dear editor: Having a piece of jewelry professionally created with old pieces can be a very exciting experience. Unfortunately, mine was not. Before handing over your jewelry, take pictures, know what you have, get a second opinion, shop around, know their reputation, policies and bring a witness. Find out if someone else had something made and what their experience was like before making your
final decision. I did none of the above and I put my total trust in this professional. I felt confident choosing this business, due to having dealt with them before, their seemingly good reputation, the fact that all work is done on the premises and that they have been around for a few years. Months later I am to pay for and pick up my beautiful piece. We had agreed on
a price but surprisingly the price had now increased. It was mentioned that I had agreed to modifications to the piece and to the new price as well as to the method of payment. This was not the case at all. The worst part is when I asked for the two stones from my mother’s ring that were not used for my new piece, to be returned to me. I was told that they had been returned.
How on earth could I forget all that? With no proof or documentation, it’s my word against this professional. I wish this on nobody and hope that my experience can be a learning one for others. Now this is interesting. The man who owns a slew of ultrapatriotic, flag-waving newspapers - and a TV station - outside Quebec, mostly in Ontario, the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder included, has thrown his support behind a political party hell bent on breaking up the country. Pierre-Karl Peladeau, major shareholder of Quebecor, announced on the weekend that he is running as a PartiQuebecois (aka separatist) candidate in St. Jerome. If he wins, as expected, he will for certain hold a high-profile cabinet post in a PQ government, perhaps finance minister, given his business background. He might be the person spearheading the next referendum for the separatists. He said his goal is to give his children a country (Quebec) that they can be proud of. In other words, Peladeau and his kids aren’t proud to be part of Canada. That kind of trash talk, for a guy whose company does so much business outside Quebec, is bound to have a backlash. Don’t be surprised if there is talk of a boycott of Sun Media in Ontario and other parts of Canada. The official company line is that Peladeau has stepped aside as the hands-on owner of Sun Media but that doesn’t change the fact that his ghost still haunts the editorial boardrooms. It doesn’t change the fact that he owns the chain. Hard to believe that he will shrug off any unsavoury comments made by the people who work for him. Don’t expect to see Sun media tabloid headlines along the lines of “Sun owner wants to break up Canada” or “Sun’s PKP a traitor.” Will Sun TV pit bull Ezra Levant turn his wrath on Peladeau?
More than likely Sun Media editorial folks will proceed with caution when it comes to putting personal knocks on Peladeau and his rush to break up Canada. After all, this is the guy who once sent a text message to S-F publisher Milton Ellis around 2 a.m. to complain about something he read in the paper. Another publisher once received a message at 3 a.m. demanding to know why money was used to purchased T-shirts for a charity. He is the guy who ordered water coolers to be removed from all his newspaper offices because they were deemed an unnecessary expense and who decreed that TV sets in newsrooms had to be tuned to the third-rate Sun TV at all times. The running joke in Sun Media newsrooms was that if Peladeau had been successful in his bid to purchased the Montreal Canadiens, the team would have been order to play with 2 1/2 lines and use Bearskin Airline. Perhaps the billionaire media mogul is tired of the news game, at least outside Quebec, and is laying the groundwork for his exit. In the meantime, folks running Sun newspapers outside Quebec can only hope that PKP stops talking about making life better for his kids in a Republic of Quebec. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR Halliwell’s Tire and Brake Shop at Sydney and Water streets owned an operated by Earl and Bill Halliwell who took over the business from their father Ashworth. It was erased from the landscape when Cornwall Square was built and Sydney Street was re-aligned. A large chunk of Central (Horovitz) Park went with it. ... The Deebank family’s Western Tire store on Pitt Street and Bob Bough’s eatery a couple of doors down. ... The Colonial Coach bus terminal and lunch counter on Second Street next to Shirley’s Restaurant, a popular hangout for teens. ROUND’N’BOUT City council spent more time discussing grants to outside agencies

THIS & THAT When the VIA Rail train pulled into the Cornwall station (what has morphed into a glorified bus shelter) Thursday a dozen passengers in the first-class car lined up to exit. They were still waiting to get off a few minutes later when the train pulled out. Seems nobody could get the door open and the engineer wasn’t told of the problem, so it was off to Montreal. The folks finally got off in Dorval, the next stop. A fleet of taxis was assembled to bring them back to Cornwall. Two of the unhappy passengers were MPP Jim McDonell and the Hon. Ed Lumley who just happens to be a member of the CN board of directors. Needless to say, a couple of big wigs at VIA HQ got an earful from Lum. HERE & THERE Without trying to disparage the fine proactive crime-fighting work of Cornwall Police Service, one of the reasons crime is on the decline, not only in Cornwall but in most other cities across the country, and North America for that matter, is simple demographics: There are a lot fewer kids and the population is aging. Look no further than school enrolment figures where school boards are spending thousands of dollars each year to grab a share of a shrinking commodity: students. The decline started in the 1970s. Families are a lot smaller than when Baby Boomers were growing up. It was not uncommon in the 1950s for households to have five or six kids. Some had more, especially among French Roman Catholic

families who followed the wishes of the Church to propagate, whether they could afford a dozen kids or not. La ville entreprend des rénovations des égouts pluviaux à Legion Park La ville de Cornwall désire informer ses concitoyens que des travaux ont été entrepris pour améliorer un drain d’égout pluvial dans le secteur de Legion Park, près des terrains de baseball. Dans le cadre de ce projet, un drain d’égout pluvial est ajouté au fossé le long

Le 6 mars, les Dragons ont célébré la venue du congé d’hiver au carnaval hivernal mis sur pied par le GDE. Les élèves ont participé à des activés à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur et on même dégusté des queues de castors! Nous tenons à souhaiter un bon congé d’hiver à nos Dragons!
Improvisation mixte qui a pour titre… CORNWALL, Ontario - La Ligue d’improvisation du CSDCEO va bon train! Sept écoles secondaires participantes, s’affrontant lors de sept tournois amicaux et offrant sept journées de spectacles époustouflants… Voilà en quoi consiste cette ligue d’improvisation, qui a vu le jour il y a environ dix ans. Les tournois de la ligue d’improvisation ont lieu mensuellement, dès le début de l’année scolaire jusqu’au mois de mai et prennent place, à tour de rôle, dans chacune des écoles secondaires participantes. À chaque rencontre, les élèves talentueux représentant les sept écoles secondaires divertissent leur public avec des improvisations colorées, inspirées par une catégorie-vedette attitrée au moment du tournoi en cours. Les pointages sont compilés, pour ultimement déterminer les deux équipes finalistes qui s’affronteront dans le cadre du tournoi final de la saison qui aura lieu à l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle , à Cornwall, le 22 avril 2014. « Le CSDCEO est fier d’offrir à ses
élèves l’occasion de participer à cette ligue d’improvisation, qui leur permet de s’épanouir en français et ainsi, associer la langue française au plaisir. Des activités comme celle-ci sont idéales pour maximiser le rapport positif que les élèves entretiennent envers leur langue, soit l’un de nos objectifs stratégiques. Le candidat libéral dans Chapleau, Marc Carrière aimerait bien voir la région de l’Outaouais être doté d’un statut particulier en éducation. Étant donné la proximité de la région avec l’Ontario, le député sortant croit qu’il est important de faire comme dans le domaine de la santé, qui bénéficie déjà d’un statut particulier. «Avec notre réalité frontalière, on a besoin d’un statut particulier, autant dans l’analyse des programmes, ne pas se comparer avec le reste du Québec, mais se comparer avec notre réalité avec la frontière de l’Ontario», précise Marc Carrière. Le candidat libéral estime qu’il faudra aussi ajouter des infrastructures dans un futur rapproché. Marc Carrière a par ailleurs profité de son lancement de campagne mardi matin au Complexe Branchaud-Brière pour s’engager à avoir la faculté complète de médecine satellite de l’Université McGill dans les délais prévus. «Il faut que McGill se prépare, on ne fait pas ça du jour au lendemain, précise-t-il. Donc, c’est autour de 2016-2017. Le 26 février 2014 tous les élèves de l’école Rose des Vents ont participé à une journée olympique. Les élèves étaient regroupés en équipe par province. Chaque équipe avait des élèves de la maternelle à la deuxième année et les autres des élèves de la troisième à la sixième année. Nous avons débuté la journée avec une cérémonie d’ouverture des jeux au gymnase. Après la cérémonie, les équipes de la troisième à la sixième année ont été à l’extérieur de 9h30 à 11h30 pendant que les équipes de la maternelle à la deuxième année étaient à l’intérieur. Après le dîner, les
équipes de la troisième à la sixième année sont restés à l’intérieur et celles de la maternelle à la deuxième année ont participé aux activités à l’extérieur. À l’extérieur, les équipes ont joué au bobsleigh, au biathlon, au ski acrobatique, au ski de fond, au ski alpin et au curling. À l’intérieur, il y avait le skeleton, le patinage artistique, le patinage courte piste, le saut à ski, le hockey et la luge. Nous avons beaucoup aimé le ski acrobatique car il y avait une variété d’obstacles à contourner. Nous avons aussi aimé le skeleton parce que c’était amusant de rouler sur les rouli-roulants! Nous avons eu une magnifique journée des olympiques! Merci aux enseignantes Mme France Sabourin, Mme Brigitte Clermont et Mme Caroline Samson-Bélair qui ont organisé cette belle journée!

Entente hors cour
pour’ école de Cantley
La Commission scolaire des Draveurs (CSD) a conclu des ententes hors cour avec CIMA+ et Boless dans le dossier de l’école de Cantley. Aucun chiffre n’a été dévoilé en raison de l’entente de confidentialité entre les différents partis, mais des compensations sont offertes par CIMA+ à la CSD. Cette entente concerne le dossier de la nouvelle école primaire de la CSD en construction depuis la fin 2012 à Cantley. En janvier 2013, les travaux de construction avaient été arrêtés jusqu’en avril 2013. C’est le ministère du Développement durable et de l’Environnement qui avait fait arrêter les travaux à cause d’un problème avec le champ d’épuration prévu pour desservir cette nouvelle école non conforme aux normes. Une nouvelle technique pour le
champ d’épuration avait dû être trouvée et être approuvée par le ministère. C’est la firme CIMA + qui avait conseillé la CSD dans l’élaboration du projet. La firme Boless, pour sa part, était responsable de la construction de l’école et les retards dans les travaux avaient engendré des coûts additionnels pour cette firme, d’où cette entente hors cour. Selon les informations dévoilées par la commission scolaire, CIMA + donnerait une compensation touchant presque tous les coûts additionnels liés à l’arrêt des travaux. La CSD paye un certain montant à Boless pour des coûts additionnels qui ne seraient pas liés directement à la fermeture. «C’est une entente satisfaite pour tout le monde», a commenté le président de la CSD, Julien Croteau. Prévu pour accueillir ses premiers

encore d’ateliers de méditation. «On veut offrir un produit yoga de grande qualité. On veut que les gens en aient pour leur argent. Ils ne font pas seulement un don, ça leur permet de s’impliquer et de faire une activité», indique Luc Provençal, trésorier de l’organisme et initiateur de ce projet. Ce dernier souhaitait organiser une activité
de financement qui se démarque des autres. Des tournois de golf et des soupers spaghetti, ça fonctionne, mais ce n’est pas original, selon lui. Depuis les dernières années, la situation empire pour la Soupe populaire de Hull. L’an dernier, elle servait 47 000 repas. Cette année, elle devrait dépasser le cap des 50 000. Le tout
avec un budget moins important. Présenté pour la première fois à l’hôtel du secteur d’Aylmer, le Rassemblement yoga IV se déroulera dans six salles différentes. Les personnes intéressées auront donc un éventail d’options qui variera entre débutant et avancé. Les organisateurs attendent au moins 200 personnes.

The Shaker hymn, “Tis a gift to be simple” isn’t referring to things, but to a way of living. However, this week I’m going to sing the praises of simplicity, a feature not common to today’s life-style and consumer products. Does your new car have the gift of simplicity, especially when some red flashing lights appear on the instrument panel? Have you mastered the complexity of your computer? Is your income tax form something simple to fill out? Let me share with you some of my favourite things, no, not “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens…” I mean my favourite simple things.
High on my list of favourite simple things is the pry bar, known as ‘the lever’ in my grade XIII physics class. When used in conjunction with ‘a fulcrum’, I was taught that, if applied properly, in accordance with The Law of the Lever, I could move the world. To tell you the truth, I haven’t even tried that yet, but I have used my seven foot long pry bar along with some strategically positioned bricks or blocks of wood to achieve some very impressive lifts. A friend’s back deck had shifted and sunk. She was unable to get a front end loader into her backyard, because the space between the adjacent houses was too narrow. By applying our combined weight at the far end of the bar, we were able to lift and shift the deck sufficiently to insert concrete pads underneath it, thereby levelling it. Whenever I try to plant a tree or a flagpole or a fencepost at my Glengarry home, slightly below the topsoil there will inevitably lurk a
rock, stone or boulder. Some are larger than the first prize pumpkins at the Williamstown Fair. As the provided photograph shows, my team of pry bar, wooden blocks and shovel managed to disinter it and relocate it. My pry bar needs no batteries, no lubrication, no annual tune-ups, no periodic paint job and no periodic upgrades. I could bequeath it to my grandchildren (if I ever have any). It’s something I could have inherited from my grandfather if he had brought it over from Ukraine. It is more useful than any other tool or device I have ever owned. Could you say the same thing of any electronic or mechanical device you have ever owned? In some future column, or if we ever get to share the light and warmth of a campfire, I’d like to sing the praises of three other simple things that I have. Do you have any idea what they might be?

Pharmacist Awareness Month March 2014 is Pharmacist Awareness Month, when pharmacists across the country reach out to make Canadians aware of the many services they offer to improve their patients’ health. This year’s theme, The pharmacist is in, highlights the fact that pharmacists are the most accessible health care provider in Canada. They are taking on expanded roles
in every province in Canada, making them an even more valuable member of the health care team. A 2012 survey by Environics Research Group showed that while many Canadians are willing to see pharmacists for expanded services, they simply aren’t aware of the full range of issues they can discuss with their pharmacist. The survey of over 1500 adults showed that Canadians report high levels of interaction and satisfaction with pharmacists’ services, and a full 80% of respondents indicated that they’ve received counselling or advice from a pharmacist. About half of respondents said that they would see a

Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame — Class of 2014 The Induction Committee of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame has selected the Class of 2014 for Induction on August 16, 2014. We are very happy with our list of Athletes and Builders, which includes four hockey players. The selection committee received several new names for 2014, names that reach into the history of sports in our area.Some of our new class, not only played, but helped build their respective sports as well. Please welcome our new class, of which, two of our athletes/builders will be inducted posthumously. Tickets for the Benson Hall of Fame induction dinner will be $50 and details will follow. Brian Tardiff - Builder Girls Hockey - A solid fastball player throughout his career in the CCSL & JDFL - Brian turned his talents to promoting and coaching the Girls Softball and Hockey programs into what they are today. Roger Guevremont - Builder Curling – Roger has been involved as a volunteer in many sports organizing events and conducting clinics - 40 years of playing and helping to grow the game of curling - Roger spent countless hours helping our youth learn the game and started the school initiation program. He was the 2002 Lions Sportsman of the year. Wayne MacDonald – Football – Wayne starred as a offensive lineman during his years at SLHS. After his Junior and University football career, Wayne became an Athletic director and coach at St. Francis Xavier University and was the Defensive co-ordinator at Acadia when they won the National Championship in 1981. Jack Entwistle – Football/Builder (posthumously) Played HS football at SLHS
Minor Midgets and was drafted by the Oshawa Generals in the third round of the 1985 draft. He spent four years with the Oshawa Generals – scored a goal in his 2ndNHL game with Winnipeg, then spent five years AHL/IHL/ SMLIIGA. Ian MacInnis – Hockey/Builder -1982 was part of the (then) highest scoring line in OHL history with Doug Gilmour & Steve Driscoll – Signed by Chicago, Ian played one season in Peoria, before an injury ended his playing career. Took over the Colts franchise and led the Colts to the National Championship final in 2013 and was coach of Team Canada East 2013. Marc Crawford – Hockey - Two time Memorial Cup winner, Marc captained the Royals in 1981. Scored over 200 points in 3 seasons and coached the Royals from 1989-

CORNWALL, Ontario - With a focus on gluten-free living, more vendors, more information and a more accommodating venue, the second annual Healthy Living Wellness Fair promises to be even bigger and better, this year. “Due to the overwhelming success and response to our fair, last year, we quickly realized the yearly need for this kind of event,” said Sylvie Thibert, even co-organizer, and local Health Nut, who explained that last year’s fair saw 400 visitors in just three hours. As well as medical professionals, including chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage and physio therapists, Reiki practitioners and others, there will be organic farmers, and health-food vendors, geared to those living with celiac disease or have gluten intolerances. The main goal of this event is for you to meet many local, health-minded professionals and individuals right here in your own community and surrounding area, explained Thibert. As well, this year, there will be health,
beauty and fitness experts, a kids zone, and the addition of local artisans, artists, musicians and craft vendors. “They’ll surely add a nice touch to the fair,” she said. In all, there will be approximately 60 vendors. Guest speaker for the event is Kathy Smart (nee Burgess) a local woman who is very much in demand. Called North America’s glutenfree expert, Smart, the best-selling author of gluten/wheat-free cookbooks, speaks at expos around the world, and has also appeared on the Dr. Oz show. Smart will be hosting a one-hour talk from 12:00noon to 1:00. Seating is limited, therefor, first come, first serve. There is a $5 admission fee for the presentation. Admission to the fair is a minimum donation of two dollars. All proceeds will benefit Maison Baldwin House. Organizers are hoping to raise over 2000. The second annual Healthy Living Wellness Fair will be held on Saturday, April 5, from 11am to 3pm, at Agora Centre, 301 McConnell Ave., in Cornwall (formerly Nativity Church Hall, above the bowling alley).

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Beatles tribute show to mark the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four will take place next month at The Port theatre in Cornwall. REVOLUTION: A Tribute to The Beatles, will take place April 11 and tickets go on sale Monday at noon at the theatre box office. “Fifty years ago The Beatles kicked off a worldwide phenomenon that has never really ended and they still remain the biggest name in rock and roll,” said Mark A. MacDonald,
volunteer co-ordinator for The Port. “Jeff Brunet, Brock Frost and a few dedicated volunteers are doing what they can to make sure the Port Theatre remains a vibrant part of our local cultural scene.” The Port Theatre has been a local landmark for over 70 years and the Beatles show is being used as a fundraiser to help keep pace with upkeep at the facility. “We are honoured to have Mr. Brock Frost as our special guest emcee for this event and all of the proceeds will be used to support the Port and their efforts to upgrade to a digital system,” MacDonald said. TC Media is helping to sponsor the event.

In the last article I reviewed a very important aspect connected to maximizing your sports performance and that was sleep. Today it’s obvious that many believe that the more you push the human body, the better it operates but unfortunately this isn’t the case. The cycle of improved sports performance does include vigorous training but the benefits of training can only be realized when the body is given what it needs to repair from the stress caused by the training. This is simple stuff yet overtraining, without proper recuperation, is the norm.

I remember a story of one of the world’s most elite performance and strength coaches being invited to Calgary to train one of our Olympic teams many years ago. The coach immediately assessed the old training schedule (and the results of the team….which were not good) and declared instantly that the entire team was overtraining. That top performance coach (a literal God in strength training and performance circles around the world,) was immediately released from his duties, the team continued to over train and at the next Olympics the results were dismal once more. The team again turned to this performance coach, he accepted the job for the second time, the team exercised less (plus improved their recuperation protocols) and the results were noticed on the podium. If it is good find a recipe to use what you have. If you do not feel like cooking and do not think you will use it, think of donating it to a food bank.
