CORNWALL LIVING: A little bit Counties, a whole lot rock ‘n’ roll CORNWALL, Ontario - What better way to celebrate the biggest, brightest issue of Cornwall Living magazine to date than putting hometown bluesman Paul DesLauriers on his first cover. A large crowd filled Schnitzels European Flavours in the city’s downtown on Wednesday (May 27) for the unveiling of the 2015 edition. This year’s offering boasts 108 pages on life in Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry. Framed Photography owner-operator Jason McNamara lensed the cover shot of DesLauriers’s face half-covered by the neck and strings of his guitar. The award-winning rocker is a major focus in Cornwall Expats, a series highlighting those who found tremendous success in their career travelling abroad but still keep their roots firmly planted in the area.

“This is really exciting, because it’s my first magazine cover and I’m representing where I’m from,” said DesLauriers. Here are just a few of the subjects covered in the new issue: a local urban food revolution launched by Smart Greens, artist Pierre Giroux’s series of striking images on large plaques to be installed throughout the city to help locals and visitors link to the area’s rich history, and many, many more. The magazine is a collaboration of advertisers, writers, photographers, and Seaway News staff members. “We really wanted to touch on culture, music, and arts,” said Rick Shaver, Cornwall Living’s publisher. “You can grow up and get educated in Cornwall, travel the world to further your studies and career, and always come home.” As Cornwall Living took shape throughout the year, the usual suspects were diligently working behind the scenes: Todd Lihou, TC Media-Cornwall Seaway News editor; Bob

Little Alex’s brain tumour has doubled in size, doctors are fearful, says mom pressure in his tiny head became so intense that he stopped breathing. Earlier this week he was once again rushed into an emergency surgery to insert a shunt into his head, to relieve mounting pressure. In late April some 60 per cent of an orangesized mass was removed from the back of his head - which now appears to have returned with ferocity. “There’s nothing much else to do, they will stick with the radiation and chemo,” said Truelove. “It’s not the greatest news. They’re just hoping it works.” So at barely more than year old, little Alexander will have to undergo daily radiation treatments for the next six weeks, in addition to

regular chemotherapy. “They usually don’t do chemo when they’re less than three years old,” said Truelove in an earlier interview. “But this is his only chance.” Doctors were forced to leave a large portion of the tumour because it is so close to his brain stem and spinal cord that his quality of life, and chances of survival, could have been compromised. Truelove said last month she noticed that her son appeared to have a slight kink in his neck. He was otherwise developing just fine and was a normal, happy baby. But doctors quickly discovered that he was a very sick little fellow. The official diagnosis is anaplastic

CORNWALL, Ontario - The mother of a 14-month-old Cornwall-area baby got terrible news last week - the tumour growing inside her son’s head has doubled in size in just two weeks and doctors fear the worst. Britney Truelove said in an interview the news, understandably, was devastating. “There’s not much hope. But there’s still a little chance for him,” she said of little Alexander Lazore, who has been saddled with regular radiation and chemo treatments that began Thursday. “I was very, very mad this morning.” The little Cornwall-area fellow, just weeks ago, was diagnosed with a stage four brain tumour. Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario nearly lost him, on April 23, when the

matter. The family of the elderly woman was outraged at the care she received. “The patient, M.M., went from being an independent 92 year old woman living in her own home to a life confined to a wheelchair being cared for by others,” said a family spokesperson to wished to remain anonymous. “After months of unsuccessfully challenging the complaint, Turcotte did admit the allegations against him to be true and correct.” The spokesperson indicated that M.M. was in significant pain and discomfort. “After nine weeks of treatment at his clinic with no improvement in the ulcer and in increasing pain she was taken from her home by ambulance to the Cornwall ER and admitted,” the spokesperson said.

“Infection in the heel bone was suspected and confirmed with a bone scan. The bone destruction was so advanced her lower leg was amputated on Jan. 3, 2013.” Turcotte issued a statement when reached by Seaway News, suggesting he and M.M. were at odds at times. “This matter represents a patient complaint,” Turcotte said. “My patient and I had significant differences of opinion and understanding of the facts and issues that were the subject of the complaint. “My commitment has always been to my patients and my community and therefore did not wish to challenge my patient’s views and perceptions and as such settled this matter as described.” Jeanette Despatie, CEO the Cornwall Community Hospital, said there would be little comment from her facility. “This is a matter between Dr. Turcotte, his patients and his college,” she said. “He had no clinical privileges here.” Despatie said Turcotte will complete his three-year term as board chair in June and will be replaced. His replacement, said Despatie, has nothing to do with the case before the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. The college said M.M.’s foot continued to be “red, swollen and painful” while she was cared for by Turcotte. 6034547

CORNWALL, Ontario – The chair of the Cornwall Community Hospital Board has been suspended by his governing body and ordered to pay a sizable amount of costs for misconduct. As first reported at cornwallseawaynews.com, Michael Turcotte, a city chiropodist and foot specialist who operates at the Foot and Ankle Clinic in Cornwall, has been disciplined by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario for providing ineffective or improper treatment to the patient and failing to keep proper records of his interactions with the patient. The college will collect $15,000 from Turcotte before the end of the year to cover the costs associated with the hearing and disciplinary measures. Also, Turcotte was slapped with

a six-month suspension, which will be cut in half when he complies with orders to complete ethics and wound-care courses. His hearing took place in April. The action against Turcotte was initiated after complaints surfaced following a patient case he was involved with in late 2012 involving a 92-year-old diabetic woman, listed in documentation as “M.M.” who was suffering from an ulcer on her left foot, among other ailments. The college found that Turcotte failed to properly assess the ulceration and record relevant characteristics of the lesion, including the treatment options he prescribed. “Turcotte provided treatment to M.M. which he knew or ought to have known was ineffective, unnecessary, deleterious or inappropriate to meet her needs,” the college said in a notice of hearing on the

NEWS

Brock Frost resigns from council following news of police charges Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Coun. Brock Frost resigned Tuesday, in the wake of news that he faces police charges in Quebec and has apparently moved to Ottawa. Frost, after denying any knowledge of the police charges, said in a one-line email to Seaway News that he would be resigning, effective July 1. “I have decided to step down from council. My last day will be July 1/15,” was all the email said. Seaway News has confirmed with the Levis, Que. police service that charges of fraud and uttering a forged document have been laid and a summons for Frost to appear in court has been issued.

“He has been charged...with fraud and using a false d o c u m e n t ,” s a i d Guylaine Laflamme, a spokesperson for the police service. The summons lists June 19 as the date for Coun. Brock Frost. Frost to appear in court, she added. Seaway News reached out to Frost who denied any knowledge of the charges and suggested he keeps his nose out of such things. “As I have said before, I have no knowledge of any charges in Quebec,” he said in an email provided to Seaway News. “I live in Ottawa and don’t pay much attention to

what is said in Cornwall. “All I can say is that the police have never contacted me, I have never been arrested and have only been to Quebec twice in two years. “If you have any more information for me, please feel free to let me know.” Frost had also emailed his colleagues around the council table, telling them to contact him directly if they have questions on this issue. Nothing against Frost have been proven in court. Reports suggest Frost was charged by police in Levis, Que., April 27. It is unclear what sparked the police investigation. Seaway News had been investigating potential police charges against the city councillor some weeks ago. The newspaper

reached out to Frost at the time, who denied knowing about any police investigations. Frost was under no obligation to leave office and could have only been forced out in specific instances, including being in violation of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, found to have broken campaign financing laws, or incarceration. “Under the Municipal Act and the City of Toronto Act, a member of council’s seat becomes vacant if he or she ceases to be eligible to hold office,” said Conrad Spezowka, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “A person does not lose the eligibility to serve solely on the basis of being charged or convicted of a criminal offence, and the legislation does not require a person to resign if they have been charged with a criminal offence.”

Councillors surprised by Frost charges Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - City councillors were left reeling by reports last week that Coun. Brock Frost is facing police charges in Quebec. Councillors were asked if Frost should resign his position to deal with the charges, but Coun. Andre Rivette said it appears unlikely Frost will quit. “Look at the comments he is making now,” he said. “It’s up to him (but) he won’t resign. He

won’t step aside.” Days later Frost pulled the plug on his short-lived career in politics, announcing his resignation, Rivette and other councillors were taken aback by Frost’s suggestion that he now lives in Ottawa. “He never told any of us that,” said Rivette. Coun. David Murphy responded with “What?!” when he was informed of the comment. “This is obviously new territory for us,”

“Coun. Frost is driving his own bus,” said the mayor. Coun. Claude McIntosh said Frost faced an uphill climb. “It’s not easy to get your reputation back… win, lose or draw,” said McIntosh, who like Frost is a new city councillor. “The timing is terrible. He’s the guy who created the integrity thing and he’s having his integrity questioned there. “I’m going to go with innocent until proven guilty, but he has some challenges ahead.”

Murphy continued. “I’d have to sit back and find out where we go, if anywhere… “But it will probably be status quo.” Frost was under no obligation to leave office and could only be forced out in specific instances, including being in violation of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, found to have broken campaign financing laws, or incarceration. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy had indicated the rookie councillor would have to decide on his own how to react to the charges.

Cops investigated after developmentally-delayed man injured in arrest CORNWALL, Ontario – A trio of Cornwall police officers are being investigated after a city man with developmental delays was severely injured while being arrested at the train station earlier this month. The province’s special investigations unit (SIU) has designated six investigators, including an individual who specializes in forensics, to get to the bottom of how the 43-year-old man ended up with a broken rib and other injuries following an arrest May 17. Four other Cornwall officers who may have information related to the incident are also being interviewed by the SIU. The incident, which took place around 10 p.m., has sparked concern at Open Hands, a local agency with whom the man has ties through social support.

“We expressed many concerns” to Cornwall police, said Open Hands executive director Dave Ferguson in an interview, suggesting the man was Tasered twice by police during the course of an arrest. “He does enjoy trains and has a habit of going on a walk to the train station to calm himself down. “Certainly we don’t believe there was anything to justify what happened. “It’s a very serious situation.” Cornwall police chief Dan Parkinson would not comment on the incident. “I can’t, the (Police) Act does not allow it. Only the SIU can comment,” he said. It’s unclear what prompted police to attend the train station to confront the man in the first place. The names of the officers being investigated have not been

released. Ferguson said Open Hands wants to ensure the man receives the advice and support of a lawyer as this incident unfolds. “He needs strong advocacy on his behalf,” said Ferguson. Sgt. Dave MacLean, the president of the Cornwall Police Association, said his union supports the members. “The CPA stands by our members and is supporting them during this investigation,” he said. “Our members are co-operating with all aspects of the investigation.” The SIU opened its investigation into the conduct of the officers on May 18, said spokesperson Monica Hudon, adding it was the city police service that alerted the oversight agency to look into the matter.

The SIU is a provincial agency that investigates incidents when members of the public are injured by police. The man required hospitalization following the incident. Ferguson said he wants to keep the lines of communication open between the police service and his agency to avoid similar situations in the future. “We have concerns with the police activities...(but) we need to have a very good relationship with police,” he said. Parkinson did say police want something similar. “We are always interested in working with any agency interested in the safety and security of any person,” he said. Hudon said the SIU will continue its investigation but could not say when things will wrap up. She said if criminal charges are laid, it will come at the discretion of the SIU director.

Cornwall cop resigns amid guilty plea in underaged sex case Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall police officer has resigned from the service after pleading guilty to five sex-related offences in Quebec involving a minor. Pascal Rossignol pleaded guilty to three

counts of sexual exploitation and two counts of procuring sexual services from a person under 18 years of age in a Valleyfield court last week. He resigned as a constable from the Cornwall police service the same day. Rossignol had been on trial for 10 charges involving sexual offences with persons under the age of 18.

On Oct. 13, 2010 an allegation was made to the Cornwall Community Police who referred the matter to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU determined that the alleged offences occurred in the Province of Québec and subsequently the investigation was referred to the Sûreté du Québec, Professional Standards

Division. The charges were laid as a result of a twoyear long investigation by Sureté du Quebec’s Professional Standards Bureau. Rossignol will be sentenced in Valleyfield on Sept. 17. Rossignol was under paid suspension from his duties as a police officer while awaiting trial.

Laying tracks for IPM & Rural Expo Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Young farmers followed in footsteps of generations past at Plowing Day in Ingleside. Plowmen, 4H Plowing Clubs and curious onlookers got a small scale preview of the 2015 Stormont Dundas and Glengarry International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo at the Ontario Plowmen’s Association’s annual event on Saturday (May 30). The demonstration and coaching event held annually in advance of the IPM for prospective competitors included contemporary tractors

and plows, antiques and horses. Kim Hadwen of Belleville brought Jake and Roy, his team of heavy horses, to the plow day at David Brown’s farm north of Ingleside. His grandson Tristan Boutilier, 12, also of Belleville, has been competing at the IPM for three years and will return to compete at the 2015 IPM at Finch, September 22-26. GARDENDING

Transplant shrubs the right way Why not put in a fruit garden? During your last visit to the local garden centre, did a beautiful shrub catch your eye and you just had to have it? Did you plant it lovingly in your yard, only to realize that it is drying out and turning brown, right before your eyes? If so, you wouldn’t be the first gardener to have that sinking feeling of disappointment and regret. Shrubs might find it hard to survive transplantation for a couple of reasons. If the plant was root-bound at the time of purchase or if the root clump was too dry when planted, the roots will have a great deal of difficulty absorbing the necessary nutritional elements and the water it needs in order to recover and develop. If the root clump is too dry when you go to transplant it, water it well. You can even leave it to soak in a bucket of water for up to an hour. If the plant is root bound, don’t hesitate to prune it in a few places. Before planting your shrub, ensure that the planting hole is wide enough and add plenty of well-rotted compost. After planting, keep the soil moist for the first ten days so the roots can become acclimatized to their new environment. If, after having followed all this advice, you see that your plant is showing signs of weakness or has stopped growing, it’s a good bet that it was planted too deeply. Many new gardeners make this mistake. Here is a simple rule to follow: the shrub has to be planted at the same level as it was in the container — the crown of the plant

Just like vegetable plots, home fruit orchards and berry patches have gained in popularity over the past few years. Indeed, not many sensations can rival the pleasure of biting into a fruit that you’ve just picked from your own garden. Fruit trees are especially accessible today, as new varieties are much smaller and take up less room in your backyard. Growing fruit trees is usually quite easy, but problems might arise when birds find your treasure, especially blueberries and cherries. If that happens, the trees and bushes should be covered with nets that will discourage these ravenous creatures. Nets can be installed temporarily, just before the fruit ripens, and removed once the fruit has been harvested. Apart from hungry birds, a poor harvest can be the result of wet and windy weather. Unfortunately, there’s not much the intrepid amateur gardener can do to prevent that. Attention should, however, be paid to pollination. In order to grow fruit, most trees need another tree of the same species close by. In order to ensure fertilization, it should be a different variety that flowers at the same time as its neighbour. You could always rely on your neighbours’ trees, but this isn’t a very dependable solution. Ideally, then, you should plant at least two varieties that (where the stem meets the roots) must be at will pollinate each other. That said, nowasoil level. OPINION

Frost has done the right thing, finally Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

He’s gotta go. Coun. Brock Frost, who in recent weeks has championed not only the creation of a code of conduct for city council but also wants the municipality to retain the services of an integrity commissioner, reportedly (and ironically) finds himself the subject of a criminal investigation in Quebec. Phrases like ‘code of conduct’ and ‘integrity commissioner’ are not often linked with ‘police charges’…but here we are. While reported charges of fraud and forgery in Quebec have not been proven against Frost, and might never be, he now has a stigma attached to him that will be impossible to ignore. But my biggest beef, if the reports weren’t enough, comes from this comment that he sent to Seaway News and other media in the city: “I live in Ottawa and don’t pay much attention to what is said in Cornwall.” I’m sorry…what? It’s perfectly legal to live in another community and serve as a councillor here, as long as you own property in Cornwall. But to say you don’t pay much attention to what is said in Cornwall? Yikes. Such a comment should come as a slap in the face to people who voted for him, despite the fact that he was telling anyone who would listen that the quote was taken out of context...you know, the context of a police investigation. It’s why he should do the honourable thing, and step down.

Frost did exactly that, telling everyone in a terse one-line email Tuesday that he will be finished as a city councillor at the end of this month. In doing so, Frost hasn’t admitted to a thing. In fact, if his lawyer has anything to say at all, it will be to tell his client to keep his mouth shut on this one. Frost had been claiming he has no knowledge of any Quebec-based police charges, as recently as this week. A resignation now sends the message that the institution of city council won’t be sullied by the sideshow that a councillor forced to defend himself in court would create. Frost could have kept his job as a city councillor and there would have been nothing even his sharpest critics could have done about it. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has very specific rules concerning just how a sitting municipal official can be thrown out of office. “A member of council’s seat becomes vacant if he or she ceases to be eligible to hold office,” a ministry rep told me weeks ago when we first got a whiff that something with Frost and the cops was percolating. Which is why the only way for this issue to be resolved, from a City of Cornwall perspective, is via Frost’s resignation. It’s not the first time politicians, of any stripe, find themselves in some legal hot water. Pick up a newspaper or read a website or two – public people are getting busted all the time. What irks me, though, is how much work these people put into keeping their jobs and trying to

unavailable. Carr finished 12th, with another veteran, Glen Grant, close behind. Carr’s comedic son Jamie had this to say when I reached them in England, where they are visiting family: “We have moved to England, and don’t follow the news in Cornwall.” That guy is hilarious. In the meantime, I could go on about how councillors need to carry themselves with dignity, lead by example, project an air of authority and compassion for the community and most of all operate with the best interests of the city at heart. It’s for all those reasons, and one more, that Frost’s resignation is important: it was the right thing to do.

shift focus away from the elephant in the room. If some of them worked as hard at actually doing the job of a public figure, the benefits would be immeasurable. It would have been ugly to see such a display over the weeks and months ahead as taxpayer focus shifted to police allegations and court dates for one of our leaders instead of more important things like staking out the future of our city. Frost finished in eighth place in last year’s election, about 500 votes clear of the 11th spot. His decision opens the door for the return of Denis Carr to the council fold. While Guy St-Jean finished in eleventh place (the spot council typically goes to when looking to fill an empty chair) he has moved away from the city and would be

Dear editor: Many thanks to Todd Lihou, Seaway News editor, for his column on May 7 regarding the demolition of Memorial Park Public School. On May 8 I drove to the corner of Third and Bedford streets and found that work had begun on the northwest classroom, where I began teaching in September, 1964. I was immediately flooded with pleasant memories of the first three years of my career, teaching grades 6, 7, and 8. Mr. Pat Petepiece was the school’s first principal, an excellent leader and mentor.

He taught us the importance of reaching each and every child, and inspired in me a love for teaching. I returned to Memorial Park in 1976 and remained as principal for the next 10 years. I’m so glad that Todd mentioned the teachers he had while attending this school and who made it a great place to be. I would like to thank all staff members who contributed to the success of our students and to the smooth operations of the school during my tenure. I would also like to recognize the late Miss

Lois Gemmell, and the late Mrs. Mary Agnes Pilon. They taught children in the first primary and junior disability classes in SD and G. It was remarkable how students progressed under their love and guidance. Todd also mentioned our monthly assemblies being well attended by parents. Again, many thanks for their contribution and support in all school activities. By the way, the idea of monthly

assemblies came from Mr. Petepiece, and it was continued in every school in which I was principal. I returned to the demolition site on May 29 to witness everything levelled. Although feeling a little sadness, I will always hold fond memories of one of my favourite schools and of the super kids who attended Memorial Park. Grant Edwards, Cornwall

OPINION

46 years between huddles for Cornwall Chargers on to play at the Canadian university level, said without Lumley there would not have been a junior football team and a chance for so many gridiron warriors to showcase their skills. Lumley, assistant GM Norm Baril and Frank Mulligan, head of player development, had to cast a wide net in their search for players. They came from Brockville, Prescott, Morrisburg, Glengarry and Cornwall. “It wasn’t easy,” recalled Lumley. “Some nights we’d only have eight or 10 players for practice.” There was no shortage of stories, the usual fare as such gatherings. We heard the one about how the game uniforms were “shipped” across the St. Lawrence River from the U.S. under the cover of darkness. And about the young assistant trainer who decided to make the brand new game jerseys extra clean by throwing in a bottle of bleach while washing them at a coin wash the night before the first game. Somebody, it is said, suggested that the young trainer go into the witness protection program before Lumley discovered the colour challenged sweaters hanging up in the locker room on game day. Then there was the one about Lumley finding out that the phones he wanted between the bench and spotter’s booth on top of the Bob Turner Centre were regular telephones ... with a party line. And the one about Moe Racine Night and the unco-operative, rambunctious steer (a gift for Moe), perhaps sensing its destination was the butcher’s shop, wanted nothing to do with the presentation to the future CFL hall of famer at centre field. We’ll save that one for another time. Looking back, despite the time, energy and money, Lumley called it a great experience. He harbours no regrets. To all of that, we say “Thanks Lum.” **** Mike Salhany, who spent his career as a lawyer in his hometown, was the defence attorney in a sensational shooting case back in the 1970s. A Montreal man was charged with attempted murder after another Montreal man was found alongside Highway 401 west of Cornwall. He had been shot in the neck.

Trial testimony indicated that the shooter suspected the man was having an affair with his wife. The Crown seemed to have an ironclad case, but Salhany with nothing short of a brilliant defence poked enough holes in the Crown’s case to gain a not guilty verdict. Years later Salhany told me that he had never worked so hard on a case as that one. Salhany served a term as provincial returning officer. He had been appointed by the ruling Conservatives but he didn’t play favourites. After a battle with the Tories over election rules, he walked away from the job. He was his own man, as they say. Salhany died last week at age 75. TRIVIA ANSWER: Jean Chretien, then public works minister, cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony for what was then called the Transport Canada Training Institute. TRIVIA: On Dec. 11, 1976 the largest indoor sports crowd in Cornwall’s history attended this event at the brand new Ed Lumley Arena. The rec-

ord still stands. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: When city and area hotels had live local bands on Saturday nights. Here is the line-up from the June 19, 1976 entertainment section of the The Standard-Freeholder - Country Swingers, Lloyd George Hotel; Going Concern, Parkway Inn; Classic Revival, Tabu Room; Willy Dee, Towneline; Tiffany Trio, Royal Hotel; Country Kings, St. Lawrence Tavern; Country Ramblers, Martintown Grand Hotel; Ron Perkins Trio, Ingleside’s Treasure Island Inn. ... The old Lafayette Hotel and Wednesday amateur nights. First prize was a large pizza. The winner was decided by the loudest ovation. One night a delightful town character called Joe Belisle (“I’m Joe Belisle from Apple Hill ...”) won when his trousers dropped (intentionally or by accident) while he was trying to sing Danny Boy, or something that sounded like that. ... When the Salvation Army toured local watering holes on Saturday night distributing copies of its national magazine, The War Cry. Another regular vendor was the “Cheese Man” hawking bags of curds.

Claude McIntosh Talk about taking a lot of time between huddles. For the Cornwall Chargers, it took 46 years. But last Wednesday, May 27, at the Navy Club on Sixth Street East, the now band of old sweats, about 40 in all, some better preserved by time than others, came together to pay homage to the man who made the Inter-provincial Junior Football League team a reality. At the time, the IJFL was one of the best, if not the best, junior football leagues in the country, proud home base for the national champion NDG Maple Leafs. The amazing running back Hank Blanchard who won the league most valuable player award in the 1966 season was there. Bill Haley came down from Owen Sound. Ron Purcell arrived from Oshawa. Paul Kilger made it from Ottawa. George Rylands and Steve King drove in from Prescott. John Latham made the trip from Brockville. Dave Munro, Billy McLeod and Campbell MacGillivray showed up from Glengarry. Reg Poirier, the team’s tireless trainer, didn’t let some health issues keep him from missing out on the moment. With the help of his daughter Paulette Rossi, Reg positioned his wheelchair at the head table, a thoughtful gesture by organizers Andy Petepiece and Mike Heenan. It was called a reunion, which it was, but it was more about making up for lost years in saying thanks to Ed Lumley. Lumley, the then not-yet-30 businessman who played university football in his hometown of Windsor, not only laid the foundation for the football team, but served as its head coach, general manager and too often financial guardian angel. The team started out in 1966 as the Chargers but when the Chrysler dealership bowed out after the first year, the Ford dealership, Miller-Hughes, stepped up to the plate. Thus the Mustangs for the 1967 and 1968 seasons. The team ran out of players and money to take a stab at a fourth season. But the record shows that the club went out a winner, winning its final regular season game. Petepiece, one of eight team members who went

New program to help locals with disabilities enter the workforce CORNWALL, Ontario - Nearly three dozen people with special needs in Cornwall and area will be able to access free training to get them working. A $366,000 federal government grant was unveiled by local MP Guy Lauzon, which will cover the cost of administering the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities program which begins taking applications Monday. The Eastern Ontario Training Board is receiving the money to help 32 people with disabilities in Cornwall, the United Counties of SD&G, and Akwesasne to overcome barriers to employment. Lauzon called the program a “win-win” for the local economy. “I think people with disabilities are not appreciated like they should be,” said Lauzon. “Those who are employed are often under-employed. “If we have motivated people who want to work, we should try. Having a job is more than just a pay-cheque.” Through the “Jobs Now” project, the Eastern Ontario Training Board will assist project participants to develop the skills and experience they need to successfully enter the job market or return to school. They will learn or improve employment skills such as customer service and computer skills, and gain work experience with local employers in areas such as sales and service. The program will provide a wage subsidy to

Hugh Primeau hasn’t set foot in Char-Lan District High School as a student in 50 years. And things have changed. “It was about half the size it is now,” he said with a chuckle. “It used to be shaped like an ‘L’.” Former students of the 1965 graduating class will meet Aug. 29 at the Williamstown high school to reunite following five decades of family, work and life in general. Primeau is helping to organize the event along with Denise Turner, a Toronto-area woman who went to school at Char-Lan as well. Canadians should forget about the senate reform! Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa Canadians will soon be heading to the polls to elect a new government in Ottawa. One particular issue that could generate a lot of discussions during the campaign will be the senate reform. As an opposition MP, Stephen Harper had long advocated reforming the red chamber. However, now that the prime minister has the absolute power he would like to see this controversial issue permanently placed in the back burner. The Senate investigation, launched by the

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), indicates Canadian taxpayers have already spent $2.1 million on the audit. There also suggestions 10 more Senators may have troubling expenses. Opposition leader Thomas Mulcair is on record saying the New Democratic Party supports abolishing the senate. The NDP has no senators since it has never formed a government. On the other hand, the Liberal Party of Canada, under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, prefers an independent senate from

political parties. You will recall, Trudeau took a bold step last year by expelling senators from the Liberal caucus. Spending around $2 million on senate investigation is a lot of money, particularly in the time of restraint. The auditor general has disclosed his office’s examination of senate spending has found about 30 current and former senators with problematic expense claims. The audit teams have reviewed two years of spending receipts from senators.

Many Canadians also want the senate abolished. If Canadians are more vocal, the three main party leaders will have to come up with credible answers on where they stand about the senate. Many Canadians don’t think the senate serving any useful purpose today. Meanwhile, the trial of former Tory senator Mike Duffy continues. This is expected to continue past the October election date.

Incredible Edible Plant Festival enjoys growth CORNWALL, Ontario - New gardeners learned about growing fresh food, while children got a hands-on lesson in composting and cooking workshops. Hundreds flocked to the Justice Building in Cornwall to reap the benefits of the third annual Incredible Edible Plant Festival on Saturday, May 30. The event, headed by Transition Cornwall+, started as a small free plant giveaway with tips from local edible organic gardeners and has grown into a family-centered multi-activity festival with community planting, kids’ zone, and live music. “The main thing is encouraging people to think about growing their own food, eating healthy food,

buying food that’s grown locally, functioning as a community,” said John Towndrow, founding member of the food action group. “There are lots of empty spaces to grow gardens. But all of these plants (referring to the ones being given away) don’t need to be taken out of the pot. If you only have a balcony you can still grow food.” The free plants and kids’ garden crafts might have sprouted a new springtime tradition for firsttime attendee Meagan Malone and her family. “They’re (the youngsters) really enjoying it,” said Malone. “I have been practicing gardening at home, so all the great advice and demonstrations were very educational.” Four hundred containers of cherry tomato, green beans, chard, and sweet pepper plants were handed out as expert green thumbs and

event-goers planted vegetables and herbs in downtown sites such as the fire and police stations. “So often we just think of it as grocery store stuff and not from our own gardens,” said Transition Cornwall+ member Bill Carriere. “We want kids to associate plants and growing with a fun activity, not a work activity. And to help them understand some of the natural activity that we take for granted, like compost and worms, that creates healthy soil. When you’re eating good food from good soil, that’s healthy living.” Festival partners include: Marlin Orchards, Growing Up Organic, Seaway Valley Community

CORNWALL, Ontario - Before starting the 5,280step trek to promote sexual assault awareness, sixfoot-five Tony Lacroix slipped into size 14 bright red pumps. The fashion statement transformed Water Street into a catwalk as drivers and pedestrians cheered and chuckled in equal measure.

Cornwall & Area’s Authentic

His first time wearing the fancy footwear raised $530 for Sexual Support Assault Services (SASS) of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry & Akwesasne and the top earner trophy at their annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event in Cornwall on Saturday (May 30). “SASS is something that we so need in our community,” said Lacroix. “Every little bit that we can do for organizations like this helps. Despite aching feet and blistered toes, the local small business owner enjoyed every moment of the experience. “It’s a bunch of guys that of course never wear heels and we get to see what it really feels like. And it’s not easy. Oh my God, it’s not easy. “ Organizers estimated the event collected $3,000 from pledges, a barbecue, and 50/50 draw. Nearly 30 men rose to the challenge. The group made a wobbly charge from the splash pad area on Water Street to the median near Race Street before circling back. Compared to 2014 (an election year), participation numbers are down by roughly 20. The Cornwall Professional Firefighters Association manned the grill again this year. Some even decided to walk for the first time. “The more people that come, the more the word gets out,” said CPFA president Jason Crites as he stood in heels. “For us it tends to be a male-dominated industry, so it’s important to show people that we care, we’re aware of it, and we want to help deal with it.” For more information on SASS, call 613-932-1755 or visit sassforwomen.ca

The local Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Stroke for Stroke Golf Tournament takes place June 17 at Summerheights Golf Links. Scotiabank is a chief sponsor of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Stroke for Stroke Golf Tournament. From left are tourney chair Tom Everson, Sheila Youmelle, Stephen Bernier, Tina Lamarche (manager), Cathey Jeaurond, Shelley Bonnar, Cindy Rowe and Ashley Manwell. For more information about the tournament, or to register, contact event chair Tom Everson at 613-3602539. For a full report on the tourney head over to cornwallseawaynews.com.

Gaels headed to OFSAA “A” championship in Windsor CORNWALL, Ontario - The Glengarry District High School Gaels senior girls soccer team gave Coach Scott McPherson a special birthday present Wednesday to mark his 40th. The Gaels pulled off a 1-0 victory over the Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School Falcons at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA) Senior Girls “A” Soccer Championship at Char-Lan District High School in Williamstown. Forward Olivia Harrison scored on a breakaway halfway through the second half, beating the Falcons’ goaltender with a low shot to the bottom left corner. McPherson said a key to the game was the strong defence of centre fullback Brittny MacPherson and winger Robyn Gandia, who were able to snuff out several Falcons attacks. “The key to why we’re successful is that we’re really good defensively,” said McPherson. “When they had the ball we took it from them. When we play the better teams we’re pretty good at keeping them from scoring.” The win sends the Gaels to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations “A” Championship for the second straight year. They won silver in 2014. This year’s provincial tournament will take place June 4-6 at McHugh Park in Windsor.

The Glengarry District High School Gaels senior girls soccer team won the 2015 EOSSAA Senior Girls “A” Soccer Championship

Luis goes from the ring to the TV cameras for boxing event this week Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Tony Luis was getting nervous for a fight last week in Memphis, Tenn., but it wasn’t because he would be trading blows with another boxer. “My tie might be crooked,” he said with a laugh. Luis was a colour commentator for CBS Sportnet’s World Championship Boxing on Friday night. The Cornwall fighter, who is also the WBC Continental Americas champ, employed his vast boxing knowledge to provide insights into the fights being broadcast. The main event included a matchup between cruiserweights Latees Kayodo (20-0)

and Nick Kisner (14-1-1), but Luis also had his eye on a fight involving female fighter Amanda Cirrano (23-1-1). “She’s one of the shining bright lights in female boxing,” he said. And fight night also gave Luis a chance to do a bit of scouting on potential opponents. “One of the guys I’ll be keeping an eye on is Josh King (19-3), he’s from Australia,” said Luis. “We’re in the same weight class.” The pugilist added he’s wanted to give broadcasting a chance for a while. “It’s always been one of my dreams, since I was a kid, to do something like this and give back to the sport,” he said, adding his late mother Maria often encouraged him to read and hone his “phonics” skills. “I used to read stuff to my mom all the time.”

Homeopathy for Constipation The constipated person who best benefits from taking the Homeopathic Alumina is usually a thin, dry person. His stool is usually dry, his skin also. Rectum is sore, dry, itchy and can occasionally bleed. Even if he hasn’t had a bowel movement in 2-3 days, he still has little desire to go. Often that person will have very little vital heat. Whereas the constipated person who benefits from Colubrina has many ineffectual urgings to have a bowel movement, so usually only small quantities are eliminated at each attempt. There can be itching and painful hemorrhoids. Alcohol and spicy foods add to the problem. Keep in mind that Homeopathy treats the person and not the disease. So two people with the same problem may require different remedies. 6267335

It was entertainment night at the senior citizen centre. After the community sing along led by Alice at the piano, it was time for he star of the show - Claude the Hypnotist! Claude explained that he was going to put the whole audience into a trance. “Yes, each and everyone of you and all at the same time.” said Claude. The excited chatter dropped to silence as Claude carefully withdrew from his waistcoat pocket; a beautiful antique gold pocket watch and chain. “I want you to keep your eyes on this watch” said Claude, holding the watch high for all to see. “It is a very special and valuable watch that has been in my family for six generations” said Claude. He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting, “Watch the watch --- Watch the watch ----Watch the watch”. The audience became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth. The lights were twinkling as they were reflected from its gleaming surfaces. A hundred and fifty pairs of eyes followed the movements of the gently swaying watch. They were hypnotized. And then, suddenly, the chain broke!!! - - The beautiful watch fell to the stage and burst apart on impact”! “SH*T” said Claude. It took them three days to clean the Senior Citizen Centre and Claude was never invited there again.

Pet Tip of the Week: Problems can arise when your pet encounters a wild animal. Your pet may harass or chase wild animals that are especially vulnerable during the spring and summer months, when they are having and raising their young. Canadian Federation of University Women Helping Special Olympics Cornwall police will greet and serve diners free meals at Au Vieux Duluth on June 10 to raise money for Special Olympics Ontario through the Law Enforcement Torch Run. From left are Au Vieux Duluth server Carrie MacDonald, owner Alexandre Paradis, Cornwall police Det. Sgt. Dave Michaud, and Const. Larry Frappier.

At the annual general meeting and dinner on May 26, the Cornwall and District Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women welcomed the 2014 scholarship recipients. $400.00 CFUW Scholarships are awarded annually to one young woman from each of the 13 area high schools to support her in her university education. Attending the dinner from left to right are: Emily Cole, Char Lan District High School; Joelle Ciccarelli, Ecole secondaire catholique La Citadelle; Karlyna Girard, St, Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School; Nicole Raymond-Parker, Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School and Erica Gauthier, Tagwi Secondary School.

Your mother doesn’t work here anymore! Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com The Tooth Fairy, aliens, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are alive and well. If young children place their ‘baby teeth’ under their pillows, they find them replaced by money the next morning. That’s proof positive that the Tooth Fairy does exist. Check-out aisle magazines provide vivid accounts of people who have been abducted by aliens. Yes, UFOs are for real. Santa Claus still showers well-behaved children with iPods and X-Boxes – if he can find them. (By ‘if he can find them’ I mean the iPods and X-Boxes. Absolutely all of today’s children are well-behaved.) Since the shelves of the box stores groan with all

sorts of chocolate tchotchkes starting as soon as the Christmas stocks are removed, that proves that the devout Christian worship of the still-living Easter Bunny is justified. However, I hereby recognize the passing of several beloved characters that at one time used to cater to our childish needs. Timmy McDonald is gone, but in his memory, our highways and byways are liberally festooned with cardboard cups and snack boxes. Timmy used to work for the Department of Roads and Ministry of Victual De-Logistics. Billy Butts is no longer with us either. The deposits of cigarette ends can be seen in parking lots, placed there as a reminder of his presence. Folklore accounts say he was carried skyward in a

giant puff of smoke, the result of experiencing spontaneous combustion. And let’s not forget that great poodle, Pomeranian and pinscher follower, Stoop Dogg. There are some out there who don’t realize that he and his doggy bags are no longer with us. Before he passed away, Karl Kartz used to corral all the shopping carts. Obviously many of today’s shoppers don’t realize Karl is gone, for they just abandon their carts, expecting him to collect them. In the first week of May we decided to have our first Adirondack overnight tenting experience of the year. The bugs had not yet arrived and the leaves were still in bud. We paddled along the shoreline of our favourite wilderness lake, searching for a place to beach the canoe.

I caught sight of an accumulation of objects partly obscured by the still-bare branches of some young poplars. It was a collection of beer cans, green propane tanks, empty food cans and a few diapers. I could just imagine what the campers of last August were saying to themselves as they stashed their refuse behind the dense foliage: “No one will ever see this stuff!” Campers such as those must think their mother will return to clean up after them. Ilk such as these have absolutely no awareness of the ‘Leave no trace’ wilderness travel ethic: “If you carry it in, carry it out.”Their mother is no longer around to pick up after them. She has joined Timmy McDonald, Billy Butts and Karl Kartz into retirement. Think of others, eh! Don’t foul our nest!

Annual Rose Day approaches for Rotary Club CORNWALL, Ontario - The Rotary Club of Cornwall was chartered in 1956 and by 1959 Rose Day had become an annual major fund raiser for the Club. Over the years, the Cornwall community has benefited from the fund raising efforts in many ways. The Club’s first project was a refrigerator for the hospital – its latest, $30,000 for a chemotherapy chair. Capital projects from tennis courts, Rotary Circle, Eco Park and Gazebo in Lamoureaux Park. New this year, along with the Rotary

Club of Cornwall Sunrise, an Outdoor Workout Park. Substantial donations have been contributed to additional community projects such as the Benson Centre, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Sisters and literacy programs with the library and Ontario Early Years Centre. Internationally, over the last few years we have built wells in Honduras; schools in Madagascar and continue to maintain a program of youth exchange. As part of Rotary International we are

doing everything in our power to eradicate the world of Polio. All these projects and more are supported by our community fund raising efforts. Your support is vital to our endeavours, 100% of proceeds are donated. Roses or carnations, the price remains the same $25 per dozen. Rose day is June 13, and deadline for ordering is June 8. Call today to support Rotary Projects in your Community, 613-932-3895.
