VAGABOND THEATRE: Fifty shades of funny Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - The Vagabond Theatre Company is well positioned to open its upcoming production of the hilarious farce, Sin Sex and the CIA, by the husband and wife playwriting team of Michael and Susan Parker. Huge oil reserves have been discovered in the Chagos Islands, and O.P.E.C. is pressuring the Chagosians to join the cartel. A bumbling, fumbling CIA agent (Scott Beaudoin) and an oversexed, under Secretary of State (Laurie Menzer), are sent to a safe house in the mountains of Virginia, to begin negotiations.

Set in a remote cottage, in the woods, with no cell service, it’s a typical farce with “all the doors,” of course, said Laurie McRae Bingley, the play’s director. “No one really knows who the Island’s representative is, and we are left to wonder how the CIA agent ever got the job,” she explains. “He gets caught in his own booby traps, electrocutes himself, sets fire to himself, gets a bucket stuck to his head, and finally locks himself in his own hand cuffs.” Added to the chaos are a stranded televangelist (Alan Mills) and his innocent secretary

(Jenny Dagenais), an ex-Marine caretaker (Gary Davies), who isn’t what he seems to be, and a mysterious, glamorous neighbour (Pat Lloyd). Rounding out the cast of this fast-pace romp is Julianne Smit Brousseau. There are bunch of mix-ups that go on, explained McRae Bingley. They are not sure who this rep is and it’s a guessing game as to what the code words are as they are inadvertently said on several occasions by different people. And of course, there are “sexual mishaps.” What farce would be complete without them. “There’s going to be a lot of laughter,” she

assures, with painstakingly choreographed physical comedy. “Each character is very diversified; the actors are doing a great job.” Despite some innocent sexual entendres, the play is suitable for the entire family. Sin Sex and the CIA runs March 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 8 pm and March 22 at 2 pm at Dream Builders Studio 2107 Second Street West. Tickets are $15 and are available at Scotiabank and the Seaway Senior Citizen Club, 1010 Guy Street Suite 109. CORNWALL, Ontario - Big rigs will have to lighten their loads while travelling through Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry effective as of March 18.

2747 Marleau Ave. 613-935-5200

Half-load season is the time of year when vehicles are restricted to carrying a maximum of five tonnes per axle in order to protect the weaker roads located throughout the region. The United Counties of SDG and the City of Cornwall will be working with city cops and OPP to pro-actively inspect and enforce restrictions on area roads. “The long term forecast shows a warming trend, which will start to accelerate thawing in the roadway” said County Engineer Benjamin de Haan. Half-loads will be enforced once signs are posted. For more information, visit www.sdg.on.ca.

Chief, mayor take on assertions made by firefighters CORNWALL, Ontario - City hall is firing back when it comes to assertions made by its firefighters and accusations of “dysfunction” with the Cornwall Fire Service. Last week the Cornwall Professional Firefighters Association suggested there are concerns within the service - which finally drew an official response from city hall nearly a week later. “The Cornwall Fire Department has a welltrained complement of staff and state-of-the-art equipment to build on its proud record of service in the community,” the city said in a statement. “At present, the fire department’s average response time for a call is under four minutes.”

Which is something fire chief Richard McCullough is proud to report. “Our focus is the safety of the community and our firefighters,” he said. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy defended McCullough, whom Coun. Andre Rivette said last week was “hung out to dry” by fire association members. “Both the CAO and I fully support Fire Chief McCullough and the leadership he has brought to the fire department,” said O’Shaughnessy. The city weighed in on suggestions that there is insufficient staffing levels within the service, and that training is insufficient in some cases.

“During my time as fire chief, I have taken steps internally to try and improve morale among various divisions of the fire service and enhance the lines of communication with the chief’s office,” said McCullough. “The fire fighters association and its leadership has been invited to participate in numerous initiatives within the service. “Despite the criticism of some of the association’s leadership, the association members who form part of our training, fire prevention, suppression and mechanical divisions have done a tremendous job for our community.” In 2012, in order to improve in the areas of training and prevention, the fire chief sought the

assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshal to conduct a review. This review was supported by the Fire Fighters Association. The review identified a number of shortcomings, and action has already been taken on a number of those items. Firefighters association president Jason Crites has disputed this claim, but the city is set to unveil a a new fire master plan that could address problems within the service. The plan was developed with input from both management and the firefighters association, will provide recommendations on staffing, fire suppression tactics, training and prevention, equipment and resources and much more.

Local man speaks volumes of stroke rehab - by not saying much at all CORNWALL, Ontario - Tom Langill can tell you so much, by barely saying a word at all. The stroke survivor has spent the last six years learning to speak again, thanks to aphasia, a condition that can range from trouble finding words to losing the ability to speak, read, or write. It does not affect intelligence. Tom understands exactly what you’ve said, and in his mind knows what he wants to say - but the message gets scrambled when he opens his mouth to articulate a thought. “Before...smoke, smoke, smoke,” Tom said in describing what likely led to the stroke at just 49. “But now - quit.” Tom used to be a salesman in Alberta prior to the stroke. He sold water filtration equipment for a living and in his own words will tell you it was a lot of “la la la” - vernacular for suggesting he did a lot of talking to make a living. “But now, no,” he adds. The stroke also left him with partial paralysis to his right side - making him a lefty almost immediately. But Tom didn’t use his condition as an excuse to loaf around. When he returned to the

area from out west he began making regular trips to the aquatic centre in Cornwall to strengthen his body - and it’s where a chance meeting with people from the local office of the Vista Centre led to a sharpening of his mind. The Vista Centre, located at 55 Water Street, is a non-profit agency that offers support services for adults with acquired brain injuries, like strokes. In addition to offering day programs for adults that focus on fitness (including swimming) there is an “adjustment group” that provides patients and their families with strategies to cope with the injuries, said Andrew McKinney, a member of the Cornwall office. “We met Tom and he started asking for information about our centre,” said McKinney. That was in August. Since then, Tom has made huge leaps forward in his ability to articulate thoughts, improve his speech, memory and his ability to walk. It was suggested to him that Vista has made a huge improvement on his quality of life. “Bingo!” he thundered, slapping his hand on the arm of a couch to emphasize his point. “One-hundred-per cent! Holy cow! Really! Wow!”

Tom Langill, left, articulates the word “mailbox” for Andre McKinney of the Vista Centre in Cornwall, through the use of flash cards. His father Len, who helps in getting Tom to appointments at places like Vista, said conversing with his son has taken a giant leap in the last few months. “The improvement we have noticed within the family - it’s got to be 50 per cent better,” he said. “Tom and I can converse on the phone about sports and stuff.” Tom said he is focusing on the future and making steady progress. “A little bit better...slowly,” he said. McKinney said the agency focuses on the individual needs of its clients, and long-term

support programs are often necessary and are provided as long as there is potential for achieving goals. “We (introduced) a program here, because there is a need,” he said. McKinney said in many cases the visitors to the centre look forward to not only sharpening their skills, but interacting with people. “It’s not just for working on memory and speck, it’s a social group,” he said. Tom agrees, with gusto. “Oh my god! Yes!” For more on Vista, click vistacentre.ca.

Motivational speaker’s message to youth: Don’t let fear stop you Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - What will be your next telephone pole? That’s the question motivational speaker and author Martin Latulippe left hundreds of high school students with Wednesday, March 4 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall. Latulippe spoke for an hour as part of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) three-day 11th annual Youth Symposium. “My journey is no different than any other journey of successful people,” said Latulippe. “I’m just a normal guy who decided to go after his

dream.” When he started hockey at 10 years old, his ambition exceeded his talent, so he used his positive attitude to persevere. Fast-forward to age 24, and he’s comLATULIPPE peting as Team Canada captain at the 2001 World University Championships. The thrill of waving the country’s flag before the game in front of tens of thousands of fans furthered his message that big things can come with baby

steps. But the roar of the crowd went silent when Latulippe was slashed in the neck by a hockey skate and came millimeters from dying. “When something like that happens, you think fast and you think a lot,” he said. The injury he sustained that day changed his direction. “I was successful in only one area of my life,” said Latulippe. “But in the other areas, I was living in fear. I wasn’t making a contribution to my community. I was living my little life as a hockey player and not growing as a person. So I made a promise that if I survived this, I would live my life to the fullest.”

And that’s what he’s been doing for the last 14 years. The former small-town boy, who grew up in a community with a population of roughly 300, currently resides in New Brunswick with his wife. Latulippe said society is teaching youth that to be successful in life you have to be absolutely confident with a world-class unbeatable self-esteem. “This is a lie,” he said. “The most successful people, they doubt themselves, live in fear, and second-guess the moves they make. But, they never let fear stop them.” For full report visit cornwallseawaynews.com

EOHU wants inspection signs CORNWALL, Ontario - The Eastern Ontario Health Unit plans to roll out a program this year that will see inspection signs hanging in restaurants throughout the region. The hope is that the colour-coded signs which will deem a restaurant to be in compliant of regulations, addressing infractions or closed will be hung in restaurants that are inspected by health unit officials. The program will be similar to a plan, called DineSafe, rolled out in the Toronto area that alerts diners to potential problems at any given establishment Medical officer of health Paul Roumeliotis told a city budget committee Monday he will be seeking a bylaw from municipalities to give teeth to the new program. “I’ve been wanting to do something like this for years,” he said in an interview. “We have to inform restaurants and (will be introducing the program) in the latter half of this year.” Roumeliotis said the signage will be colourcoded green (pass), yellow (addressing infractions) and red (closed). He had hoped that the province would create an Ontario-wide program for all regions to follow, but instead individual health units will responsible for their own DineSafe-type initiatives. The health unit currently publishes the results of its restaurant inspections on its website (eohu. ca/inspections), but some residents have complained that the information is not immediately available at specific restaurants.

Art gallery money gets turfed by budget committee Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

every penny of every week – you can depend on that,” he said. “If I say the goal is to have by the end of the year be self-sustaining…that’s what I am going to do.” Coun. Maurice Dupelle suggested issues with TAG are not new. “This is my fifth budget year and there’s always been issues surrounding TAG’s budget submission,” he said. “It’s issues that have been there year after year. They’re public dollars and we have to make sure they’re being spent the best way we see fit.” Walsh suggested the money from city hall will help augment programming this year, which could draw more people into the facility on Pitt Street. “That art gallery has not had the flow through

it…the life to it – it hasn’t been what it should,” he said. “It’s going to take a little time and money for me to do that.” The city’s budget still needs to be approved by all of city council at a special meeting, but councillors did vote to approve funding for a slew of outside agencies. CORNWALL, Ontario – The Art Gallery – Cornwall is completing an investigation into the goings on of its operation and in the meantime its executive director is on leave. The Art Gallery – Cornwall (TAG) presented its $70,000 budget request to the city’s budget committee Monday, where board chair Wyatt Walsh said he is in the midst of shining a light on some of the issues plaguing the agency. “There’s been some problems there, hasn’t there,” said Coun. Claude McIntosh. Walsh agreed. “When I came in…there were problems. The art gallery is going to change,” said Walsh, who added he is in the midst of an “investigation” into

the TAG issues. “I’m 300 emails in…and I’m catching on to what’s going on. I’ve brought in very good people to be around me.” But Walsh’s words weren’t enough for the city’s budget committee, which cut the agency’s funding to just $13,500 - the amount it has received so far this year. Coun. Andre Rivette pointed to the fact that TAG has undergone wholesale changes at the board level, a few times, and there have been questions about executive director Sylvie Lizotte. “It’s tax dollars. We have to make sure we spend them responsibly. There was a turnover of two boards,” he said. “We have to make sure it was stable.” Walsh suggested stability is coming. “If I come here and tell you I will account for

CORNWALL, Ontario - Two regional artists have teamed up in a very unique exhibit which explores the melting of photography and acrylic painting, aptly named Pixels and Pigments, hosted by The Grind Café and Wine Bar, until the end of the month. In association with Your Arts Council, artists, Jacqueline Milner and Hennie Marsh, participated in meet and greet at the downtown café, last week, where the collection of over 30 pieces will hang until March 28. Jazz guitarist, Robert Cote, was also on hand to provide just the right ambience for the

occasion. “The Grind is an amazing space; the colourful walls lend themselves well to the artwork.” said Milner, of the favourite, art-friendly, downtown hangout which regularly hosts exhibits and open mic nights. The works vary from strictly acrylic paintings to a mixture of photography and paint, explained Marsh. “It is a really unique show, because of the overt blending of paint and photos, which normally, you don’t see. Sometimes the photography will be buried underneath the painting and vice versa, but this is pretty overt.” Marsh, who is from Kinston, has previously participated in the Cornwall art scene, winning

Yellow Kisses for Sean:

Students rally as 11-year-old boy battles leukemia Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Eamer’s Corners Public School students want their classmate Sean Cowan to know he’s not alone. Not by a long shot. After being diagnosed with leukemia on January 20, school staff started an awareness campaign called Yellow Kisses for Sean, along with a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ YellowKisses). It went viral overnight and already has over 5,700 followers. Ingrid Snydal, Cowan’s Grade 6 teacher, said the goal is to convince Hershey Canada to make a yellow-wrapped ‘Kiss’ to be sold at fundraisers in honour of the 11-year-old, and other youth suffering from diseases. “We’re all rooting for Sean,” said Snydal. “It’s really about him – and how much of a boost it gives him. He checks the page all the time and comments about how he’s doing.” She described Cowan as an amazing boy and a wonderful student who regularly volunteered with kindergarten students and in the school’s canteen. So far over 450 letters and numerous e-mails have been sent to Hershey Canada. “Just knowing the whole school is behind him and the campaign has gone worldwide and different schools are participating, he’s realizing

A few of his classmates told Seaway News how they feel about the situation. “Sean has leukemia, so it’s important we help him get through it,” said Kaitlyn. “It makes

me sad and depressed, but I’m happy we’re all working together to help.” Emma added: “Sean is nice and kind. He’s really good with kindergarten students as well, helping them get on the bus. And when you need a friend he’s always there.” The Eamer’s Eagles hockey team won a championship game last week and dedicated the victory to Cowan. Players wore yellow jerseys in tribute to Cowan.

It also noted that his next round of treatments began on March 3 and he will be splitting his time between the hospital, Ronald MacDonald House, and home. According to the Facebook page, if all goes as hoped following the next six months, Cowan will have at least another three years of taking oral chemotherapy treatments and regular tests to ensure that the cancer does not re-occur. Snydal said the colour yellow was chosen for the campaign because of the brave statement made by Cowan’s mom, Susan, when he was first diagnosed: “when life gives you lemons, I guess you make lemonade.” Eamer’s Corners Grade 6 student Jabishan held a piece of paper cut into the shape of a ‘Kiss’ with a special message during an interview with Seaway News: “Sean you are my best friend forever.” Cowan’s entire class is reeling from his absence, but his presence can still be seen throughout the facility. The school holds two fundraisers a month for the kids to participate in. This March, green shamrocks and ‘gold’ coins are being sold for 25 cents. The art of making budget cuts Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Congrats to the city’s budget committee. When finally given the opportunity to make some decisions it did – and one of them deserves singling out. Outside agencies went under the microscope Monday night and the elephant in the room was finally addressed – funding for The Art Gallery – Cornwall (TAG) was effectively stripped. The agency has already received $13,500 this year, but that’s all it’s going to get. And while the budget committee’s decision still needs to be approved by city council at a special meeting, it appears clear councillors have had enough of the shenanigans at TAG that have made headlines for weeks. Conflicts of interest were declared by councillors Carilyne Hebert, Elaine MacDonald and Brock Frost, so the balance of the committee weighed-in on the agency that has become questioned at best, and the butt of jokes at worst. Councillors Andre Rivette, Claude McIntosh, David Murphy and Maurice Dupelle voted to axe the funding. They made the right decision. As a taxpayer, I want to make sure my money is being spent on agencies and individuals I trust. With all due respect to newly-minted TAG chair Wyatt Walsh who appears passionate about his job, not enough has been done in the last month to convince me TAG has turned a corner. A year from now, maybe…but not now. Artists in this community deserve much better than TAG has offered recently, and the agency needs to push the reset button. By approving funding the city would be offering tacit approval to the way things have gone at TAG. By shelving the money, the city is saying: “Enough is enough. Get your act together.” Good move.

AN ABSTENTION, REALLY? It doesn’t happen often (I’ve been covering city hall for years and can’t remember the last one) but Coun. Justin Towndale abstained from voting on the TAG funding. The reason? He says he didn’t know enough about the issue to make up his mind one way or the other. He should know that officially his vote is an abstention, but in reality it boils down to voting against the funding. Which is fine – just tell us if that’s the case, Justin. I suggested to Towndale that people voted to put him at the table to make decisions, not sit on the fence. He suggested to me if I didn’t like his decision then “you don’t have to vote for me next time.” Fair enough…but there are a slew of rookies at the table who are just as green when it comes to making budget decisions, and not one of them has abstained from a vote, yet. And he won’t get off that easy when it comes to his colleagues because nearly every member of council was confounded by his decision. “What the hell is up with that?” said one, who was speaking privately with a colleague just outside the council chamber after the vote. What the hell, indeed. HEALTH UNIT SIGNS It may have slipped under the radar for some, but it appears Dr. Paul Roumeliotis is following through on a 2014 promise to have inspections signs hanging in Cornwall and area restaurants. The colour-coded signs would essentially alert diners to three things: the restaurant is in compliance, it is open but addressing infractions, or it’s closed (which would kinda be evident by the locked doors, I suppose). Roumeliotis wants the signs rolled out by the end of this year. The move is similar to the DineSafe program in southern Ontario which has

been welcomed with open arms (and mouths) by restaurant patrons in that part of the province. The kicker, though, is that the program must have municipal assent before the program can have any teeth. A little birdy tells me the Eastern Ontario Health Unit cannot mandate the inclusion of signs within restaurants on its own – it needs a bylaw from municipal councils to that end. It says here such a bylaw is a no-brainer… councils are sure to lineup in support of a Cornwall DineSafe program, as they should. It’s a program we should have had here a long time ago. The big questions will come from restauranteurs, especially some who might skirt the inspection line once in a while, who will want to know what the program will mean for their businesses. BUDGET FINALIZED? Councillors will meet Friday in what could be

the last budget session of 2015. One insider tells me councillors have met for nearly 50 hours already, while last year the budget groups didn’t crack 40. According to the most recent estimates, your taxes will jump an average of $62 on a typical residential property because the levy is being hiked by about four per cent (give or take a few ticks). Councillors on Monday night (they met for six hours!) suggested those figures are too much. The $62 represents about 2.75 per cent more than you paid last year – and there is desire to get the number to at least 2.5 per cent. That would mean cutting about $160,000 out of the budget…more if they want to make things easier on taxpayers. It says here your taxes will go up this year (not exactly news, I know). I’m also going to suggest to you if council gets to 2.5 it will push away from the table and call it a day.

LETTER

Dear Editor, The total budget for the city of Cornwall from 2006 to 2014 went from $151 million to $180 million, a 19% increase. The cost of living in that time period went up 15%. That 4% difference meant $6M in 2014. For too long, politicians danced with words like tax rate, mill rate, assessment changes, etc.

etc. It’s time to say: stop cost increases. Cost in dollars tells the real story. If costs don’t go up, taxes don’t go up. It is possible to “game”the budget by allowing increases in operating costs and reducing capital costs so the total does not change. Capital works though are required for the future well-being of the City. The challenge is to cap the operating

Question: Why do 2/3 of the City managers live in the townships? Why do the majority of firefighters live outside the City? People live in the townships for various reasons. One reason is lower taxes. Question: Are

It will take more than a slingshot to defeat Lauzon CLAUDE MCINTOSH

opponents combined. It is one of the best winning records in the country. For the Liberals, who once owned federal ridings in this neck of the woods, the writing was on the proverbial election wall back in 2000. Kilger beat the little known Lauzon, who ran for the ultra-right wing Canadian Alliance Party, by 2,962 votes. However, throw in the 3,635 votes garnered by the no-name Conservative candidate, and Kilger is a second-place finisher, losing by 673 votes. The riding was starting to list to the far right. So, it’s 2015 and the Liberals are searching for a candidate. At one time in our history, hopefuls battled for the prized Liberal nomination. These days the party is down to asking for a volunteer to undertake what has become a suicide mission. Put partisan politics aside; this is the quintessential David vs. Goliath assignment. Somehow, in the pending federal election the Liberal campaign team has to find a way to convince around 12,000 folks who voted for Lauzon in 2011 to switch loyalty cards. That is a huge shift. Not impossible, but a daunting undertaking. It is going to take more than a stone and a slingshot. TRIVIA Before it became Howard Smith Paper Mill in 1920, it was called? Guy Lauzon will wage his sixth federal election campaign later this year and if Vegas bookies, upon examining the record, were to establish a betting line, the smart money, as they say in Sin City, would be on Super Guy. He has won four straight, the last three by margins that qualify as tsunami-type landslide victories. His closest margin of victory was in 2004 when he upset long-serving Liberal MP Bob Kilger. The spread was 3,899. He captured 44.8% of the popular vote. Two years later, Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry voters, at least those who took the time to show up, sent Super back to the Hill. This time he beat his Liberal opponent by 14,108. At the time it was the biggest winning spread in local riding history. He claimed 54.7% of the votes cast. Voters were marking ballots again in 2008. This time they gave him an even stronger mandate. He beat his second-place Liberal challenger by 17,292 - 57.3% of votes cast went to Lauzon. In 2011 the Liberals handed the ball to popular city councillor Bernadette Clement, a rising star in the Liberal fold. The hope was that she would at least give him a run for his money. Not even close. Lauzon took 62.1% of the total vote and finished 21,028 in front of the talented Clement, a runaway leader in municipal elections. In the last three elections, the Conservative incumbent has garnered more votes than his

Distracted pedestrians could be warned by police Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - While there is no rule on the book that says police are bound to warn you about walking on the sidewalk with your nose buried in your phone, that just might be what happens. Cornwall police sent out a warning to residents Monday about so-called “distracted pedestrians” - people who walk on the side-

walks or along the side of the road while texting of checking in on social media. Cornwall police Const. Dan Cloutier said it’s not against the law...but is sure in unsafe. “This is a problem that is happening across the world,” he said. “As technology captures our minds, we are attracted to it. “It’s a safety concern.” Cloutier said pedestrians could be warned by an officer to watch out for vehicles, if they happen to be spotted walking on the sidewalk

while texting or otherwise using a device. “Studies suggest that one in three people use their phones while crossing the street,” Cornwall police said in a statement Monday. “Admit it: Are you among the one in three who uses their phones while crossing the street? “These devices will almost certainly create very high levels of pedestrian distraction. It is safe to say that the number of distracted pedestrian accidents will rise rapidly as these devices become more common and more

capable of increasingly complex uses.” The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario said in 2010 approximately 20 per cent of pedestrians may have had some form of distraction, such as using a cell phone, MP3 player, or a mobile device at the time of a fatal incident. “If you’ve ever bumped into something or stepped into traffic while walking and texting or scrolling through your MP3 player, it’s time that you look up,” police said.

No!” I insist. “Rounding-up is done to free-range cattle. I do not owe you $3.75. If the price is $3.73 and I include three pennies with my five-dollar bill, I pay $3.73, not $3.75.” That’s when the confrontation usually escalates. The manager is called in to mediate. I’m obliged to give a careful, mathematical explanation. It’s the principle of it. I stubbornly stand my ground. Unfortunately, my cache of pennies is

ALWAYS ROUNDED UP – Cattle have been rounded up ever since they became domesticated. When price round-off time came to Canada in 2014, cashiers had to wrestle with the difference between rounding off, rounding down and rounding up.

approaching depletion. If any of you out there still have some pennies and are willing to sell them to me, I’ll buy. If you have 83 pennies, I’d prefer to buy them from you with three quarters, a nickel and three pennies, but until I replenish my supply of one cent coins, I’ll have to submit to the rounding-off regime. In this case, it’ll be a two cent round-up bonus situation for you, a two-cent penalty for me. However, every time I make a cash purchase of self-serve fuel for my pickup truck, I craftily ensure that the price on the pump comes to something like $49.92 or $49.91, rather than $49.93 or $49.94. Those round-downs of one or two cents can really add up. Being penny-wise might make me rich some day, especially if the federal government decides to implement a round-off to the nearest dollar program.

Russ and Sam, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems. One day Russ didn’t show up. Sam didn’t think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something. But after Russ hadn’t shown up for a week or so, Sam really got worried. However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Sam didn’t know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him. A month had passed, and Sam figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Sam approached the park and -- lo and behold -there sat Russ! Sam was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then he said, ‘For crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?’ Russ replied, ‘I have been in jail.’ ‘Jail!’ cried Sam. What in the world for?’ ‘Well,’ Russ said, ‘you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?’ ‘Yeah,’ said Sam, ‘I remember her. What about her?’ ‘Well, one day she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud, that when I got into court, I plead guilty.’ ‘The damn judge gave me 30 days for perjury.’

A note to all drivers: Make sure you drive with caution, especially during this March Break week, as children sometimes get excited and forget the rules of the road when enjoying their time off. Drive cautiously!

Stay off! Stay safe! With warmer weather comes melting of the snow and ice. Never go out on the ice in spring because you don’t know how thin the ice is. Thought of the Week: There is no danger of developing eyestrain from looking on the bright side of things. Why do we still have so many litter bugs? Come on, coffee drinkers, have respect for yourself and your city. Empty Tim’s coffee cups everywhere in the snow is not nice. Find a garbage can, please!! This is the last weekend of winter….spring is just around the corner!

City council scrapped the idea of only picking up recycling every two weeks, but what about considering moving garbage pick-up to a bi-weekly cycle? Maybe that would make people think twice about what they throw in the garbage instead of in the blue bin. Every year across Canada, tens of thousands of healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized because there are not enough adoptive homes available. Help reduce pet overpopulation and support your local animal shelter. • Spay or neuter your pet. • Donate or volunteer at your local animal shelter. • Adopt a new pet from your local shelter. • Spread the spay/neuter message to family, friends and colleagues.
