NEWS
Young Champions Day begins Cornwall triathlon Heather Armstrong Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Young Champions Day on Saturday August 27th kicked off Cornwall’s Triathlon weekend. This is the day the youngest of the competitors race. “Today everybody is a champion,” said Jacquie Richards, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG (BGC). The racers who were 14 years old or younger competed in a Duathlon of running and biking or a triathlon which included swimming along with the biking and running. The proceeds from this event support the BGC. “The funds,” said Richards, “go directly into physical activities for our youth.” There are many local businesses who sponsor this event explained Richards. Some the supporters included Scotiabank, Bicycle World as well as Dr. Navaneelan. Navaneelan, who is a Platinum Sponsor said, “To support something like this is to support the
children.” She would like to see more businesses sponsor this event. To further this wish Navaneelan said, “I challenge the community to support the children and to realize it is an investment in the future of our community.” Bicycle World owner Allan McGimpsey was on hand to do repairs for competitor’s bikes. He donated the two Louis Garneau bikes won as a draw prize by Maya Dekker and David Gallant. The events today were not timed explained Richards. This event she said reinforces the benefit of physical activity at a young age. She said, “At the end of the day you’re competing with yourself.” Race results: 12 to 14 Du - Mathieu Bissonnette (M) Katlin Duval (F) 12 to 14 Tri - (Tie) William and Marcus Beckstead-Holman (M) Holly Hughson (F) 10 to 11 Du - Thomas Shoniker (M) Sydney Day (F) 10 to 11 Tri - Kyle Waldrum (M) Leanne St. Allaire (F) 7 to 9 Du - Camden McCuaig (M) Athena Andrecyk (F) 7 to 9 Tri – Landon Gault (M) Milena Lund (F)
Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ontario Power Generation visitor centre was crawling with critters this Saturday, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences. Families were invited to check out the free event at OPG, Reptiles and Amphibians, as part of the SLRIES’ series of family workshops. “For several years we’ve been doing a number
of activities like these. The themes change from time to time, but it always involves either exploring and catching live specimens and studying, or in this case we’ve also brought in a few exotic species,” said research scientist Dr. Brian Hickey. Children of any age had the opportunity to play with geckos and frogs, or check out one of the more exotice speciments that were on hand for the workshop. “We have a couple of different species of
Dr. Navaneelan presenting twins William (L) and Marcus (R) Beckstead-Holman with their first place awards.
Fun for the whole family at reptiles and amphibians day native frogs that the kids are having a look at...the star of our show is an exotic pet species named the crested gecko. A lizard from New Caledonia.” By using these events to educate the public, the River Institute is hoping to make conservation practices apart of people’s everyday life. And, the researchers at the River Institute know that awareness is a key tool against the many challenges these species currently face. “Kids love to explore nature and natural things
and not every child has the family who can go out on hikes, so we bring it to this venue at OPG to make it a little easier for them to get a look at some live animals or preserved specimens. We’re just trying to educate people about the different species we have and their fascinating biology. A lot of people have misconceptions about reptiles, they’re definitely often persecuted by people. They’re being threatened by a whole range of factors.”

Great eats at the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival
ALYCIA DOUGLASS, SPECIAL TO TC MEDIA CORNWALL, Ontario - It was a vampire’s nightmare and a Cornwalite’s dream this Sunday, August 28th at the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival. The event, now in its second year, is part of Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects’ initiative to inspire growth within the community through agriculture projects and advocacy for everything local. Taking place in Lamoureux Park, the festival promoted the power of buying local, showcasing over 100 vendors from across Eastern Ontario. “For us, this is a very important event, because it puts the focus on local sustainability,” said John Towndrow of Transition Cornwall. “That’s our whole raison d’etre. Even getting people to buy local apples as opposed to the ones flown in from South Africa has a huge impact on our environment.” Vendors took full advantage of the sunny weather, with the rain subsiding for the majority of the event. Bill Ableson, of the Carleton Place
Garlic Pantry said that this year’s unseasonably warm weather has been great for business. “This is the busiest year yet,” said Ableson, “We’ve had about 7 or 8 festivals this summer alone, but this event was well worth the trek.” Greg and Penny Foster of The Beckwitch are not only newcomers to the event, but also relatively new business owners. “We’ve only been open about 18 months,” said Penny Foster. “We’re starting to expand our product line and trying to reach more people by taking part in different festivals.” The Beckwitch offers a wide variety of handmade products, soaps, infused salts...and of course, garlic. “This event represents the heart and soul of what we are trying to do with KCEP,” said Brenda Norman of President of KCEP. Funds raised will help to launch the Green Thumbs Project; a community-wide initiative which promotes local social farming enterprise involving youth and adults with developmental disabilities.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For eight years, the MS Society has partnered with A&W to raise money to fight multiple sclerosis. This year on Thursday, Aug. 25, across Canada, one dollar from every Teen Burger sold by A&W will go to the MS Society of Canada. The money goes to each local chapter of the MS Society near the A&W franchises. The A&Ws in the Cornwall Square, on Vincent-Massey Drive, in Hawkesbury and in Rockland will be
supporting the Cornwall and District Chapter of the MS Society. The A&W at the Cornwall Square hoped to raise $600 for the MS Society before the end of the day. To help with the fundraiser, the A&W staff also had setup a table where passing kids could pay a dollar to guess the number of gum balls in a jar for a chance to win it. Also, for $2, kids could try to throw a hackey sack into various sized cups and bowls. Winners got prizes ranging from onion rigs, to gift cards to root beer mugs.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dr. Natan Behar has announced that he will be retiring effective February 2017. Behar has been practicing family medicine since 2005 and in that time has practiced out of his office located at 171 Montreal Road above the Medical Arts Pharmacy. Behar said that his decision to retire was not an easy one to make, but wants to assure his patients that they can expect no disruption in
their care. A medical team will be taking over the care of Dr. Behar’s patients. The team includes Dr. Ronald Tremblay, Dr. Clara Leigh, two nurse practitioners and a primary care provider who will be assigned specifically to Dr. Behar’s patients. Dr. Behar’s secretary will continue to work with the new team at Dr. Behar’s office in Le Village, which will mean that no copies of medical files will be necessary because of this change.

CORNWALL, Ontario - At a special meeting of Cornwall City Council held on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 23, Council was presented with the preliminary details of a franchise agreement between Cornwall Electric and Hydro Quebec. CAO Maureen Adams informed Council that the one-time cost of negotiating such an agreement would be around $91, 000. The cost of negotiating the 2007-2008 power contract was nearly $500, 000. According to the information presented to Council, Hydro Quebec would be contracted to provide electricity to Cornwall Electric from Dec. 31 2019 to Dec. 31 2029. Adams informed Council that electricity rates in the City would not increase before July 2017 and that this would be the third year in a row without an increase. Adams went on to say that rate increases should be coming in the future. “They haven’t committed to what those increases would be, but said they should be inline with inflation,” Adams said. Councillors emphasized the importance of keeping rates competitive. “Compared to Hydro One, our power rates are low,” said Councillor Andre Rivette. “Let’s keep ‘em that way.” General Manager of Planning, Parks and Recreation Mark Boileau assured Council that the City’s energy costs would remain attractive for businesses. “They’re very good when compared to Hydro One,” Boileau said. “Manufacturers see the advantage of being in Cornwall compared to other places in Ontario. We’re not as competitive as some places in Quebec, but better than Ontario.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ottawa Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police participated in a joint motorcycle training day on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The training focused on riding in groups. Specifically, in formations, passing and driving on rural roads and highways. When asked what brought them as far south as Cornwall, motorcycle instructor Constable John Hall of the Ottawa Police said that new environments provide new challenges. “We like to go outside of our jurisdiction,” said Hall. “Different environments provide different roads, landmarks and challenges.” The group of around 18 bikers stopped in Cornwall for fish and chips for lunch. “Fish and Chips is traditional for us,” Hall said.

Local business takes new steps to help visually impaired NICK SEEBRUCH nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Shawn Maloney, one of the co-owners of the Brick Cornwall has spent much of his life dealing with blindness. You would not know of Maloney’s impairment just by looking at him though. Maloney suffers from a degenerative disease that is slowly robbing him of his sight. He has completely lost his vision in his right eye and is legally blind in his left. This loss of vision is not always outwardly evident though. Maloney wears glasses, but not large, dark sunglasses and he does not walk with a seeing eye dog or a white cane. Maloney is a patron of Summit Fitness, next door to the Brick and takes Cross-fit classes there. He says that Summit has been good at accommodating someone with his impairment. “They don’t take it esay on me, but we adapt,” he said. “They’ve been really good at talking with me and working with me to meet my needs.” He says though that he does have trouble sometimes navigating stores, especially if they are poorly lit and have cluttered aisles. Maloney has endeavoured to learn more about the kind of blindness that afflicts him. He has medical background and a Ph.D. He studied at McGill and was a part of a Harvard research
group experimenting with stem cells to find a cure for his type of retinal degeneration. A native of Cornwall, he returned home after his father offered him a place in the family business at the Brick. When he got here, Maloney reached out to the CNIB to find out what his store could do to help the visually impaired. The CNIB is the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. They offer help to the blind, those who are going blind, or those who want to support them. The CNIB has an office here in Cornwall. Maloney and his staff at the Brick held a one hour training session to learn about accommodating those with a visual impairment. “I felt we should be doing something to accommodate someone with a vision problem,” Maloney said. “I’m hoping that this gets the ball rolling with other organizations in the area and that they take up this challenge too.” Maloney says that the first step is getting educated about the problem. “Eight out of 10 people registered with CNIB have some functional vision,” he said. “Most people are oblivious that I have a vision problem. I’ve wished for the comfort of going somewhere and people not being unsure of how to help someone like me. Creating more awareness would make things more comfortable. They say its more difficult going blind than being blind and that’s partially because people have a certain idea of what blindness is like.”
Shawn Maloney, co-owner of The Brick Cornwall, is trying to draw attention to what businesses can do to help the visually impaired. His staff will be having a one-hour training session with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind on Monday (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

Transition Cornwall+ celebrates the tomato nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - As a part of the ongoing Local Food Challenge, Transition Cornwall+ in partnership with the Cornwall Library and All Things Foods has challenged Cornwall to celebrate the tomato with their Tasting Summer Tomatoes exhibit. The Transition Cornwall+ team were setup outside of the Cornwall Library on Second Street on Wednesday, Aug. 24 with 28 different species of tomato. Some where big and red, some were small and yellow and some kind of looked like red peppers. “We try to highlight crops being grown today and we are trying to support heirloom tomatoes especially,” said Bill Carriere of Transition Cornwall+. “They are really amazing. Their seeds will always produce that plant and that tomato over and over again, hybrid plants won’t do that.” He said that Transition Cornwall+ is interested in sustainability, and that a part of celebrating the tomato also involved informing the public on all of their different uses. On display was a small dehydrator for dehydrating tomatoes, Carriere said that dehydrated tomatoes are great on pizza, they retain their flavour and can be added to sauces where they will regain their moisture.

pepper, and whisk until batter is smooth and thick. Stir in cooked wild rice. In a small nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, melt 1/4 tablespoon butter. Add about 1 1/2 tablespoons batter to the pan; immediately tilt the pan to swirl the batter, making a very thin pancake about 4 inches in diameter. Cook for about 30 seconds, then flip and cook for another 30 seconds. (If pancakes take longer than 1 minute to cook, increase heat.) Repeat with remaining butter and batter to make 15 more pancakes. To serve, fold each pancake into quarters; top with a dollop of trout salad. Garnish with chives.

At noon at the Library, Transition Cornwall+ screened the film Heirloom Tomatoes for the Home Gardner which informed viewers on the importance and methods of care for heirloom tomatoes. John Towndrow, one of the original founders of Transition Cornwall+ said that the group would have a booth at the Garlic Festival on Aug. 28, which serves as the grand finale to the Local Food Challenge. Not only will Transition Cornwall+ be bringing the tomatoes to the Garlic Festival, but also 2 solar ovens. The ovens cook food entirely through the reflection of the suns rays and according to Bill Carriere, they can never burn food, despite still being able to reach a temperature of 350 degrees. “They generated a lot of interest at last year’s Garlic Festival,” said Carriere. “My wife Karen was preparing some tomato sauce with garlic in one of them and the smell was just amazing. People were coming by and couldn’t believe it was coming from this solar oven.” Garlic Festival organizer Brenda Norman was eager to point out that without the tireless work of Transition Cornwall+ to raise awareness for sustainable and healthy foods, the Garlic Festival would not have been possible. “They create a sense of community that grows out of the soil,” she said.

The work of a Cornwall native during a threeyear exchange with United States Southern Command headquarters in Miami caught the attention of high-ranking U.S. military people. Major Anthony (Tony) Johnson, son of Donald and Linda Johnson of Cornwall, was on loan to Southern Command from the Royal Canadian Air Force from July 2013 to July 2016. He spent some of his time with Southern Command at Guantanamo Bay. For his outstanding work with the command, Major Johnson has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. It is the third highest award given by the United States Department of Defense. The highest is the Purple Heart. The honour was approved by Ashton Carter, U.S. secretary of defence, and Admiral Kurt W. Tidd, commander of Southern Command. In 2014 President Obama extended eligibility of the medal to include any member of the armed forces of a friendly foreign nation. Canada is about as friendly (to the U.S.) as they come. The citation noted that “throughout his time at United States Southern Command, Major Johnson displayed exemplary leadership, professionalism, organizational skills and initiative.” It said that “the distinctive accomplishments of Major Johnson reflects credit upon himself, the Canadian Armed Forces, and the department of defense.” Upon his return to Canada, Major Johnson was posted to Camp Borden. His brother, Patrick, also serves with the RCAF. He is stationed in Trenton. Both served in Afghanistan. *************************** On July 4, 1939 with a death sentence
hanging over his head, Lou Gehrig stood before 61,000 fans in Yankee Stadium and called himself the “luckiest man on the face of the Earth,” and insisted his “bad break” could not rob him of all the good fortune, good friends and great love he had enjoyed through his short life. It is arguably the most famous speech given by a professional athlete. Two years later the great Yankee first baseman was dead at age 38. The horrible disease that claimed Gehrig is called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. It was incurable in 1939. It remains incurable in 2016. Each year in Canada the disease claims 1,000 victims. Brian “Russ” Tardiff, 62, became one of the victims. His was a courageous two-year battle that ended Sunday surrounded by his family. Tardiff was a fixture in local rinks and on local ball fields, as an athlete and a tireless builder/ mentor. His fingerprints were all over girls minor hockey and softball programs, particularly the Cornwall Typhoons Girls Hockey Association. In 2014 he was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame and despite the naked physical effect of the merciless disease that was ravaging his body, he gave one of the most moving speeches ever given by a CSHF inductee. A lot of folks were wiping a tear or two. Like Gehrig, Russ didn’t want anybody feeling sorry for him. Like Gehrig, the disease would not rob him of precious memories, good friends and great love he enjoyed through his life. Precious memories. Good friends. Great love. Those are things we all need to think about when having what we think is a bad day. HERE AND THERE: U.S. women’s soccer goaltender Hope Solo got hit with a six-month ban by U.S. Soccer for calling the Swedes a “bunch of cowards.” Imagine if the NFL, NBA and NHL drew that kind of thin line in the sand when

Liberal spending habits of some of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is drawing a lot of ire from Canadian taxpayers. This was the government that promised us transparency and fairness. Do you remember when critics of the third party used to pounce on the Conservative government when they find any reason to attack the government? Who can forget the time when former Tory Minister Bev Oda billed the taxpayers for $16 on a glass of orange juice? Yes, the embattled cabinet minister resigned from the government of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end her political career.

During her tenure as international co-operation minister when she was responsible for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Oda made headlines for lavish spending while travelling on government business. She was forced to repay taxpayers for $1,000 a day in limousine expenses, a pricey stay at London’s Savoy Hotel in 2011 and for the expensive juice. The total expense was $3,000. Now let us look at what happened in August 2016. Trudeau’s Health Minister Jane Philpott racked up $1,700 in transportation fees in one day. This limousine service, it was discovered, was owned by a Liberal supporter.
The minister admitted the price tag was “too high and inappropriate.” “I have already taken steps to prevent this from occurring in the future,” she emphasized. Philpott has decided to repay the expenses to taxpayers. It also came to light the same minister billed taxpayers $520 for access to Air Canada’s executive airport lounge. The New Democrat MP Charlie Angus said the spending reflected poor judgment. Soon after the news broke about the extravagant spending, Prime Minister Trudeau said this situation is a reminder for all of them to be extremely careful about their expenses and about the public trust that they wield. A few days later, it was reported Canada’s Environment Minister Catherine McKenna
including a couple of bureaucrats ate their way through more than $12,000 worth of fine Parisian fine food during last fall’s big climate change conference. The federal government’s trip, which included Prime Minister Trudeau and many other politicians cost taxpayers just under $1 million. McKenna, who spent 15 days in Paris, filed meal claims worth about $1,500. The minister admitted $6,600 was spent on a French freelance photographer who followed her around the summit taking pictures of her. These are just two cases that came to light. Who knows how many other ministers claimed some extravagant expenses? Do cabinet ministers think they are entitled to these expenses when they come to power?

BRIAN TARDIFF: Cornwall loses a sports leader CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall sports landscape will never be the same, following the loss of a man who was instrumental in the creation of girls minor hockey, as well as baseball and softball leagues in the city. Brian Tardiff, who fought valiantly following an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis nearly three years ago, succumbed to the disease on the weekend. There was a time when Tardiff could fire a softball from third base to first with lightning speed and accuracy. The same could be said of his proficiency on the ice. In fact, if you played men’s fastball in Cornwall, had a daughter who played minor hockey or perhaps played yourself, you can thank Tardiff. The irony that a man who loved physical activity slowly lost that ability wasn’t lost on anyone – including Tardiff himself. “That hits the nail right on the head,” he said in an interview with Seaway News in February 2014. Friends and former teammates were remembering Tardiff, a member of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame, with heavy hearts. “He was a true gentleman and a great ambassador for our community,” said David
Murphy, who played alongside Tardiff on the softball field for 10 years. “Brian was instrumental in the growth of girls hockey and softball in Cornwall and area. I was honoured when he asked me to help him coach a women’s softball team several years ago. We spent some time at the Ontario Hockey Academy together recruiting for the school too. ”But like any family, whether it be connected through blood or ice, Tardiff’s network rallied around him – ALS be damned. Tens of thousands of dollars was raised for Tardiff’s family in 2014 to help ease the burden of the disease. “The great thing about Brian is that you never (got) a half-measure,” Rod McLeod, a long-time friend of Tardiff, told the Seaway News in a previous interview. “He always gave 100 per cent. “But a lot of it is behind the scenes. He’d rather see other people get the kudos for it.” If you travel, and happen to bump into Brian Tardiff was diagnosed with ALS three years ago. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ligue nordaméricaine de hockey (LNAH) has announced that they will disolve the Cornwall River Kings and proceed with a seven team season. A Cornwall group lead by Rodney Rivette attempted to save the team. The LNAH gave them until 4 p.m. on Monday to raise $500, 000. Initially, Rivette and his group held a rally to support the River Kings on Tuesday, Aug. 23. There, they announced plans for the fans to buy the team. For this plan to work, they needed to find 1, 000 people who would commit $500 a year for five years. Rivette said that signs looked promising that they could have raised more money if they had more time.
“With more time we could have made our goals,” he told the Seaway News. “We had a major sponsor interested in investing in the team, but concluding that kind of deal would have taken more time than we had.” Rivette said however, that he did not hold any animosity towards the LNAH. “Quite honestly, they LNAH did everything they could,” he said. “Teams are booking ice times and a delay would affect not just LNAH, but hockey in Ontario and Quebec. They needed to make a decision and they did the responsible thing.” Rivette said that all cash donations made to support his group’s efforts to take over the team have been returned and that they are in the process of returning cheques now. The LNAH will hold a dispersal draft for the River Kings players on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Nativity Co-Cathedral to Re-open CORNWALL, Ontario - In December 2015, the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall temporarily suspended the use of Nativity Co-Cathedral to allow time to investigate a possible structural problem with the church’s choir loft. The engineering report that was generated confirmed the need for structural reinforcement. Proposals were sought and the contracts awarded. The work has now been completed and we are pleased to announce that the Co-Cathedral will re-open Thursday September 8, 2016, the feast day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J., Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese, will preside at the opening mass which will take place
Nativity Co-Cathedral at 7:00 p.m. The Diocese is currently discerning the Co-Cathedral’s future and all that entails. Everyone is invited to celebrate this important feast and the reopening of the Co-Cathedral on September 8, 2016.

People who stick promotional or yard sale posters on light poles or posts should be made accountable to remove them after outdated, or if the city removes them, they should pay for the service. Also, stores should have security people watching their shopping carts. If a person is seen leaving the parking lot with a cart, they should be stopped. That’s called stealing. Most of them do not return them back to the stores. Instead, they are abandoned by the side of the road, on a sidewalk or in a ditch. “Let’s do our part to keep our city looking beautiful”.

Holy water
Sister Mary was truly a religious woman. Besides for her duties as a nun, she was also very active in various hospitals visiting sick patients and taking care of all their needs. So it was no surprise that one day when she ran out of gas, the only container she could find to put the gas into was a bedpan. Sister Mary happily walked two blocks to the closest gas station, filled up the bedpan with gas and headed back to her car. As luck would have it, as Sister Mary started tipping the gas into the fuel tank, the traffic light turned red and she had quite a large audience witnessing the spectacle. Just when she finished pouring in the last drops of gas a fellow opened up his window and hollered, “I swear! If that car starts I’m becoming a religious man!”

Congratulations Sara Lauzon and Francis Racine on your recent engagement!
Talk about a fun match. These two are always exploring many places and new events going on in Cornwall. Little Sister Morgan and her Big Sister Lysanne are always having fun biking, swimming, learning at museums and even like to raise money for the agency. Lysanne is a great Big Sister who not only helps be a mentor to Morgan, but takes beautiful pictures for the agency so we can post how much fun we have here at BBBS! Keep shootings for the stars and you girls will continue to go on amazing journeys!
SCUTTLEBUTT Blazers reach semi-finals in Gloucester tournament CORNWALL, Ontario - The Seaway Valley Blazers U13 Girls T1 team recently participated in a Tournament in Gloucester Ontario. After a weekend of tough competitors, they lost in a very close match in the semi finals. The Blazers extended their thanks to their sponsor for this Tournament FCM Recycling on Loyalist Street in Cornwall. Please don’t drink and drive. Statistics show, more impaired driving accidents occur during the summer than winter. Thank you so much to the man who called and offered to provide my husband with a life jacket to replace the one he lost. It was so nice and so generous of him!
Pet Tip of the Week: A note to all pet bird owners – Always make sure that your ceiling fans are turned off when your bird’s cage door is open. Their safety is your responsibility. Also, make sure that doors and windows are securely shut.
Congratulations to Pat Maloney and Bill Swinden for winnng Bronze at the Ontario Games held in mid-August in Midland, ON. Pat and Bill competed in the men’s over 55 doubles. Guy and Susan Lemay came in a respectable fourth place in mixed doubles.
