At the Regular Board Meeting on Oct. 4, 2016 trustees of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) voted for a Pupil Accommodation Review of several Cornwall schools. This could potentially lead to closures as soon as June 2018. With the ongoing fight against proposed closures within the Upper Canada District School Board, many are wondering what can be expected for students attending Catholic schools in Cornwall. While no concrete decisions have yet to take place, CDSBEO’s Superintendent of Business, Bonnie Norton says that students’ educational well being is always a priority.
David Maracle arrested in Cornwall
Escaped convicted criminal David Maracle was arrested in Cornwall last Wednesday, Jan. 25. “An alert civilian bystander at the Cornwall Square recognized him and informed the Cornwall Police who then made the arrest without incident,” said Cst. Dan Cloutier. “I have no idea what his motive was for being in Cornwall.” Maracle had originally walked away from the Henry Trail Correctional Facility in Kingston on Jan. 22.

Get ready for a Girls Night out CORNWALL, Ontario - The Girls Night out is an annual event in support of Maison Baldwin House. This year they have upgraded their venue as they expect a big turnout. The Girls Night Out fundraiser started out as a house party ten years ago. For the past four they have moved into a hosting the event at venues. Last year Girls Night Out packed the Legion Hall, this year they have moved into the Agora Centre for what is planned to be the biggest Girls Night Out yet. The event starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 and goes all evening. Featured at the event are 10 special guest
karaoke acts that will be performing throughout the afternoon and evening with the help of DJ Carol Grant Productions. There will also be some tribal dancers to come in to demonstrate belly dancing, a popular act from last year. The even prides itself on being a fundraiser that is affordable for everyone to attend with tickets being $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Last year the event raised $4, 350 for Maison Baldwin House. In addition to money raised from the ticket sales, there will also be a silent auction with some prizes donated by the 24 different vendors that will be at the event. The event is for women only and some of the
special guest speakers will talk about different kinds of abuse. “Its not just about physical abuse,” said organizer Naomi Lamarche. “People think its just women walking around with bruises, but there is also mental, emotional and financial abuse.” There are still tickets available. For tickets email cwanser@bell.net. New focus on fish at River Institute Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The St. Lawrence River Institute had a major announcement on Thursday morning that could change the way we understand the river that our community depends on. The River Institute has received a $75, 000 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Fund. The money will be used to equip a new fish health assessment laboratory at the River
Institute. The goal of the laboratory will be to evaluate the overall health of the species of fish in the river and the impacts that contaminants are having on their ecosystem. Dr. Jeff Ridal stated that this Trillium funding is just the first step and that if they can show the value of this research, that the River Institute hopes to expand the project through Growth funding. “The Fish Health Assessment Laboratory will
provide the tools needed to develop our ability to link fish health issues to environmental change,” he said. “It also allows us to increase of capacity to provide lab services for in-house programs and provide services to others.” Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell was on hand for the Trillium announcement. “When I look back over the years, we wouldn’t be able to have all of these great programs in the area without the Institute,” he said.
Dominique Lapointe and Louis Savard will be heading up the new fish laboratory at the St. Lawrence River Institute (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media).

For the past three years, the Early Years Centre has been offering the TLC (teaching and learning with your child) program to young mothers in the Cornwall area. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, seven participants graduated after completing a 20-week-semester in the program. From left, Jennifer Deruchie presents a TLC certificate of completion to Nikeylee Richer and son, Chance with Carrie Ouimet. The graduation ceremony took place at Cornwall’s Early Years Centre on 130 Sydney St. The program gives young mothers the opportunity to complete their high school education without compromising their role as a parent. It also allows moms to connect to others in similar situations, and equips them with the tools they need to be successful in both roles. The program is provided in partnership with TR Leger, Saint Matthew Catholic Learning Centre, the City of Cornwall, Seaway Community Health Centre, and Ontario Early Years. The Agape Centre also donates groceries at each of the weekly sessions, with Charmic Limos taking care of transportation. In the mornings, moms get to enjoy teachand-learn with their kids. “That’s where they really get to see their child’s progress,” said Rachelle Doth, who is ECE with Ontario Early Years. Later, they prepare a healthy meal under the instruction of SVCHC dietitian, Jessica McLeod. After lunch, childcare steps in, and the moms go upstairs for Triple P group, which focuses on positive parenting.
The program boasts a laid-back environment which Jennifer Deruchie credits for the tremendous success rate. Deruchie, who is a Mental Health Counselor/Child and Youth Mental Health at the Cornwall Community Hospital, says that the atmosphere has been instrumental in bringing moms to the program. “We’ve had some moms who have come, and they’re so anxious, so even getting here was a big success for them,” said Deruchie. “To see them stick with the program and develop friendships with the other moms is just wonderful.” The program is designed for women between the ages of 16 and 25, and helps students to overcome obstacles common to young parents. Deruchie stresses the importance on learning about services within the community and how to access them in a way that leaves judgement out of the equation. “We each work with different agencies, but we all help the moms to build positive coping and parenting strategies that help children to develop and grow,” said Deruchie. “It teaches skills that help parents feel confident that is so important for these young moms.” “This is my second time being part of the TLC,” said Nikeylee Richer who spoke during the graduation ceremony. “My TLC journey has been an amazing experience. I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime. The ladies here are wonderful and always ready to help answer questions. Our children have also made new friends, and learned to get along, but we probably would have never met if it weren’t for the community coming together and making this all possible.”

Chef Luc McCabe prepares his first plate for the Copper Skillet Competition.
Mike Smith challenges chefs at NAV Centre Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - World famous chef Mike Smith was at the NAV Centre to judge the culinary skills of the chefs competing in the IACC Copper Skillet competition. The International Association of Conference Centres (IACC) holds these competitions amongst the chefs of their association members with one chef standing tall at the end. The Copper Skillet is a black box competition which means that the chefs did not know what to expect going in. Smith praised the black box format as the purest form of competition for a chef. “We’re not trying to trip them up,” he said. “This is what a chef can expect to face every day. Any chef worth their salt should be able to come up with a meal on the fly when presented with an ingredient.” There were five competitors in the adult category of the competition and two in the junior
under 26. Cornwall was well represented in the competition by Nav Centre chefs Luc McCabe and Jessica Neville in the adult and junior categories respectively. Smith, along with the other judges, Chef Javier Alarco and Food Critic Peter Hum, patrolled the cooking area. They were judging the competitors based on creativity, use of ingredients, presentation and finally flavour. At the start of the competition the ingredients were revealed and the contestants had 15 minutes to start planning their meal. There were a variety of ingredients that could commonly be found in any kitchen as well as three protein ingredients. The contestants had to use two of the three protein ingredients in their meal. The contestants had to create two plates, one for presentation and one for eating. Chef Michael Smith noted that Jessica Neville was the only one who chose to use the tahini in
her dish. At the end of the competition, it was announced that the judges had picked Kent Philips of London, ON and the Nav Centre’s own Jessica Neville as the winners. Nav Centre Director of Conference Services Ian Bentley said that the Nav was proud to bring such a competition to Cornwall. “Usually these types of competitions go to the larger cities,” he said. “Our General Manager Kim Coe was a driving force to bring this competition to our town.” The winners will go on to compete in the finals in Los Angeles in April. Chef Javier Alarco said that competitions like these were a great test of a chef’s creativity and skill. “These black box events are great because they are so spontaneous,” he said. Chef Alarco also had some advice for chef’s thinking of competing. “Don’t think about winning your first time,”he said. “The more you lose the more you learn.”

Politics is no reason to harm someone else Nick Seebruch
I for one was impressed and praise the Imam’s calm calls for unity and reconciliation following Sunday’s shooting. The Imam is a native of Cornwall and his response to the terrorist attack that “politics is no reason to harm someone else,” is exactly what needs to be heard after something like this. I identify with what Imam Alam said as being an important Canadian value espoused by a Canadian. This year, 2017, will be Canada’s year on the world’s stage as the United States recedes. The message of Imam Alam of tolerance, empathy and unity is the one that we as Canadians should present to the world and at home. The citizens of Cornwall had plenty of empathy and support to show to its Muslim residents. On a story about the Islamic Centre pub- and how the Quebec shooting is an attack on lished on the Cornwall Seaway News Facebook everything Canadians hold dear. page, the vast majority of the comments from When reflecting on attacks like the ones in readers spoke of how it was sad that innocent Quebec City, instead of retreating in fear, we Canadians had been harmed by an extremist
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
The Donald Trump ban on refugees, and the shooting at the mosque in Quebec City on Sunday has, in many ways, made the past week difficult, but what has not been shaken is the commitment of Canadians to empathy, unity and community. Cornwall, as a border town, has shown itself to be full of these Canadian values as the Islamic centre in our City received positive support from the city’s media, police and everyday citizens. Imam Usmaan Alam said that his Islamic Centre received words of condolences from the Cornwall community in the aftermath of the attack that took the lives of six men in Quebec. They have also received flowers, fruits and other gifts. On Monday night, the Cornwall Community Police Service placed a marked police vehicle outside of the Islamic centre as a show of solidarity and overt protection of the centre.
should come together, reject rhetoric that calls for the expulsion or persecution of others and help those who suffer from that persecution where we can.

politicians when they achieve power. Trump took executive action to pave the way for the Keystone XL pipeline. The long-planned multi-million dollar pipeline has become a symbol both of Canada’s efforts to get land-locked bitumen to international markets. Obama was initially interested in the pipeline but blocked the project in 2015 under heavy and intense pressure from environmental activists. TransCanada Corp. is on record saying it is evaluating ways to engage the newly minted administration to Trump on the potential of the Keystone 1,990-lilometre pipeline. The pipeline has been discussed for nearly eight years at a
It is almost like the unexpected has happened. Former US President Barack Obama and the defeated Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton were both against the much talked about Canadian Keystone XL pipeline. But, with the American election has given new hope and optimism to the Keystone pipeline. And even Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has suddenly become much interested in the pipeline after initially insisting that Alberta’s oil sands must be phased out. Power sometimes does strange things to
considerable cost. Oil sand is regarded as the one of the dirtiest source of fuel on earth. Trudeau fully realizes that once rich Alberta is going through very tough economic climate. The Keystone is $7-billion projects which will create jobs on both sides of the border and will also have a significant economic impact on both the United States and Canada. Unions are in favor of the project because it will create many much-needed jobs. This project will move western oil and encourage the oil sands industry. For Canada’s western provinces, this is the most important project ever created to create
wealth and prosperity. The pipeline will transport 830,000 barrels of heavy oil from the oil sands and from shale oil fields in Montana and North Dakota to Gulf Coast heavy oil refineries in Texas. The main argument against this project is the pipe line will allow oil sands to expand and destroy the environment. However, on the other hand, many argue the pipe line is good for both countries. Trudeau reluctantly admitted he misspoke about the pipeline initially. “I have been on the record for many years supporting it because it leads to economic growth and good jobs for Albertans,” he said.
Fire Service... But what can we do? We have as much control over this as we do the 20 plus police staff who made the $100,000 sunshine list. Or do we? Occasionally there are whispers of the OPP providing this service, a service most of us will never directly use. Should our Council consider this? How does this happen? What will it cost? Fortunately through the wonders of the internet anyone can research the cost, benefits and simple processes involved. But there are other things to consider, like how it would affect our current police staff? How would they feel to become part of a world class police service with all the opportunity for diversification, advancement, training and the latest in police technologies? What about the perceived notion of local control? Council often complains they have no control as everything is up to the police services board. I wonder if a contracted OPP would give Council a much bigger ear than they have now? The OPP currently provide policing to a population of 2.3 million, including 324 Ontario municipalities, including the surrounding municipality of SD&G. Small police forces have been
amalgamating with the OPP for years. This is not a new trend. They are the second largest police service in Ontario and they provide contracted Cities access to every specialized police support function that’s out there. The potential cost savings are simple logistics, buy 10 police cars or 1000, 60 police uniforms or 500. These are just some simple comparisons, but then consider the cost of everything being purchased is spread out across more and more Ontario properties. Salary cost is no issue as all Ontario police officers make within a few hundred dollars of each other. No doubt some people reading will be reaching for the phone to demonize the mere thought of this. It’s called self-preservation. They may even suggest an expansion of our service to take over SD&G. That’s nonsense and it shows desperation. So why do we continue to miss out on this opportunity? I want this brought up for discussion at City Hall to see who speaks against it and what pea brained excuse they use. All taxpayers should be demanding Council ask for a costing. After all, it’s free. Brad D Eamer, Cornwall, Ontario
letter to the editor
Editor Full disclosure, I am a retired member of the OPP. I have not been coached by anyone to submit this letter. Once again we watch helplessly as our City Council wrestles with our 2017 budget. This city is so desperate to save money that anything and everything is on the table, and rightly so. Council cuts a few thousand here and there, but can’t seem to address the really big
budget items. The process begs one to look at the property tax information pamphlet taxpayers receive showing where our tax dollars go. On that list is Cornwall Fire Services, an easy and frequent target for some councilors. But everybody ignores the elephant in the room. By far the top of the spending list is our police service’s $18 million budget, more than double the

OPINION
Hanoi Jane Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings
U.S. prisoners being tortured were untrue. She claimed they were well-cared for by the North Vietnamese. Good food. Lots of exercise. One of the prisoners slipped the actress a note, describing what was going on. It included several social security numbers of prisoners who had been reported missing in action. She turned the note over to the North Vietnamese. Following the war and the return of PoWs, it was discovered that the day after Fonda turned over the note, the prisoner who slipped her the note was executed and others identified in the note were subjected to more torture and solitary confinement. So, there was good reason she quietly slipped into the sleepy town of Ogdensburg just before Christmas, sans any advance publicity, unlike her much hyped visit to the Alberta oil sands a couple of weeks later. There is a strong military presence in the region. Just down the road from Ogdensburg is Fort Drum, home to the 10th Mountain Division (light infantry). No doubt Fonda was aware of the base and the strong military support in the region. Her timing could not have been worse. Days before Fonda quietly slipped in and out of Ogdensburg, retired air force Lt.-Col. Barry Bridger was a guest at the sprawling military base. Bridger spoke about his horrendous 2,232 days as a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton prison and the brutality the PoWs endured at the hands of their North Vietnamese captors. SPORTS STUFF A tight race in the regular draw of the Cornwall Curling Centre senior men’s
draw for the Bob Trueman Memorial Trophy spilled over to the 12-rink final. In the 29-team 10-game draw, only five points separated the top 14 rinks. The top rinks, Roger Lalonde and Jacques Cadieux, finished with identical 8-1-1 win-loss-tie records, while George Dolejsi had a 7-2-1 record. Lalonde prevailed in the playoff round, edging Cadieux and Dolejsi by half a point. Cadieux was awarded second place because of his better regular round record. Lalonde’s winning rink included third Nick Cox, second Peter McCauley and lead Rick Buttle. Members of Cadieux’s short-handed rink were third Mike Cox and second Paul Desnoyers. The Dolejsi rink had third John Reid, second John Boulerice and lead Ray Baker. ... Disgruntled player once asked coach Mike Keenan why he had been relegated to the fourth line. “Pretty simple,” said Keenan. “It’s because I don’t have a fifth line.” TRIVIA ANSWER George Punch Imlach played for the Cornwall Army team for one season during the Second World War. The team played in the powerful Quebec Senior Hockey League which showcased dozens of NHLers who had signed up for the military. Imlach was doing his basic training in Cornwall. TRIVIA In October 1976 Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Premier William Davis attended the official opening of this city facility that was built with federal-provincial funding. THIS WEEK IN 1953 With the possibility of their communities being wiped out by construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, residents of Mille Roches and Moulinette formed committees to represent their interests in talks with Ontario Hydro. Residents believed that their interests

would not be best served by the townhip or United Counties councils. Named to the Mille Roches group were F. E. Barkley, Garnet Derousie, William Raymond and Ross Alguire. Moulinette representatives were Clinton Rae, Jack Graveley and Tom MacCaffrey. ... The federal government announced a $50,000 grant for construction of a Cornwall airport. Under terms of the grant, the city was expected to supply the land and operate the airport. ... Dr. W. J. Shannon of England arrived in the city to start organizing a pathology lab at Cornwall General Hospital. ... Stu McConkey scored three goals as the Legion edged the Colts 5-4 in a City Junior Hockey League game at the Cornwall Community Arena. Eddie Rowe scored the game winner late in the third period. ... Roland Mercier of the weave room was leading the Canadian Cottons Hockey League scoring parade with 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists. Ed Herrington of the finishing shop was second with 19 points on 11 goals and eight assists. .. . Vitamin enriched white bread made by local bakers made its debut on grocery store shelves. ... Annual fee for Ontario driver’s permits was increased to $2 from $1.50. ... The Record Bar (8 Second St. E. and 612 Montreal Rd.) was selling discontinued (vinyl) records for 39 cents each or three for $1. WE’VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY The 1951 census showed that five Cornwall households had television sets and that CBOT Channel 4 (Ottawa) expected to be up and running in early 1952. In 1958, the age of roof top aerials came to an end with the advent of cable television. ONE MORE THING Before the computer age memory was something you lost with age and a hard drive was a long trip on the road.

As touching as Jane Fonda’s reconciliation with her deceased abusive mother was (Jan. 11 column), thousands of American veterans, especially those who served in Vietnam, heap scorn on the 79-year-old actress/activist they label a traitor. It goes back to 1972 when Fonda took her campaign against the Vietnam War to the heart of communist North Vietnam. Her friendly visit was a propaganda gift for the communist regime. She spent the visit praising the strong will of the North Vietnamese people and calling out the hundreds of U.S. captive U.S. service men, mostly Navy pilots, as war criminals. Among them was John McCain. The visit earned her the nickname Hanoi Jane. Veterans have other names for her but they are too profane for print. Many have vowed to urinate on Fonda’s grave, if they outlive her. The hatred is that strong. In many countries, her visit and anti-U.S. comments would have been regarded as treason. She would have been eligible for a firing squad. A photo showing Fonda wearing what looked like a North Vietnamese Regular Army (NVRA) uniform and helmet and sitting behind an anti-aircraft gun pointed skyward was part of the propaganda coup. The photo got plenty of play around the world. During the visit she met with selected U.S. pilots imprisoned in the infamous Hanoi Hilton jail. They appeared to be in good health. It was, of course, staged for the gullible actress and the international media. Fonda told a news conference that stories of

MARTINTOWN, Ontario - There were slow cookers as far as the eye could see in Martintown on Saturday at the Chili Cookoff fundraiser. There were 17 different chilis available for tasting in Martintown’s Community Centre on Jan. 28 and for just $10 visitors could try them all. All of the money raised will be going to Phase 2 of the new park in Martintown. Phase 2 will see the addition of some play structures geared towards older kids in the community. The new park is where the old Martintown Community Centre used to be. This is the second year the chili fundraiser has happened. Last year more than 100 people packed into the Community Centre to try the chili and organisers were expecting an even bigger turnout this year.

event in Martintown during the festival and all proceeds from that event go towards the park. “The community has been really great in banding together for this new park,” said Jason Flaro, one of the organisers.

North Glengarry NEWS
Heart felt loss of a Highlander Glengarry Highland Games Handout
NORTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - As Highlanders everywhere prepare to celebrate the 70th edition of the Glengarry Highland Games, a moment of sadness must be faced first due to the passing of a very grand Games lady, Connie Kippen Blaney, on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. The first Glengarry Highland Games were held in 1948. That year, Connie, at age fifteen, took first prize in the under‐eighteen piping competition. As well as being successful at Maxville, she also excelled at games in Montreal, Fergus, Embro, Syracuse and Schenectady, winning many trophies. It was during this period of her career that she was acknowledged and recognized as
being one of the best lady pipers in North America. It was also about this same time that Connie affectionately became known as “Glengarry’s Sweetheart”. After graduating from Ottawa Teachers College, Connie taught school for thirty five years in the area. The last twenty of these years were spent at the Maxville Public School. Connie was a founding member of the Glengarry Pipe Band and was Pipe Major from 1965 to 1968 and was a highly regarded teacher and champion of piping in Glengarry. Connie has been involved with the Games since their beginning. In 1981 Connie became the Secretary for the Games Committee and she remained in that position for fifteen years. In 1988‐89 she served as a Vice‐President and in 1991 she became the President. As a member of the Tartan Committee she was instrumental
in the creation of the Glengarry Highland Games tartan. In 2005, she was inducted into the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame. Connie continued to sit as an active director and past‐ president until she passed away this week. Games President Anne Stewart speaks for the Games Organizing Committee when she says, “Respected for her many accomplishments in the community and in the piping world, Connie will be missed, and her contributions to the Games will never be forgotten. Connie was a trailblazer, whose determination and success as a young female piper competing on the Ontario circuit in the 1940s and 1950s enabled future generations of women (including my eldest daughter), to play and compete at the highest level of piping and in pipe bands worldwide. Her smile, her laugh, her knowledge... Connie is irreplaceable and we will miss her terribly.”

She says that her and her husband speak for many other citizens in this wonderful city want to applaud him for standing up for city services and city staff as a whole this week in a Facebook post during our last snow and ice storm where there were many negative and untrue statements made about snow and ice clearing and he set the record straight. The city itself to should be proud of Mr. Sauve’s service and his strong commitment to our safety. Thank you again.

HOW MY HUSBAND AND I TERRIFIED A CAB DRIVER
My husband and I were dressed and ready to go out for a lovely evening of dinner and a movie. Having been burgled in the past, we turned on a ‘night light’ and the answering machine, then put the cat in the backyard. When our cab arrived, we walked out our front door and our rather tubby cat scooted between our legs inside, then ran up the stairs. Because our cat likes to chase our budgie we really didn’t want to leave them un-chaperoned so my husband ran inside to retrieve her and put her in the back yard again. Because I didn’t want the taxi driver to know our house was going to be empty all evening, I explained to him that my husband would be out momentarily as he was just bidding goodnight to my mother. A few minutes later he got into the cab all hot and bothered, and said (to my growing horror and amusement) as the cab pulled away: “Sorry it took so long but she was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her ass with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so i grabbed her by the neck and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn’t scratch me like she did last time. But it worked! I hauled her down the stairs and threw her into the backyard....she had better not crap in the vegetable garden again.”

The SuperBowl is this weekend! I’m sure a lot of people in Cornwall are upset that Aaron Rodgers won’t be there, but Tom Brady will be. Hopefully the Atlanta Falcons will be the ones to take the air out of the New England offense. The Grey Cup will be coming to Cornwall this Saturday and will be visiting the Emard Bros. in the afternoon if you want to grab a picture with the cup and an Ottawa Red Black. Got the winter blues? A sure fire cure is a night with the girlfriends. Head over to the Agora Centre for Girls Night Out in support of Maison Baldwin House. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, very affordable! There will also be 24 vendors, karaoke acts and a silent auction at what will be the largest Girls Night Out in Cornwall yet.

CORNWALL, Ontario - This Saturday, January 28th, 2017, Farm Boy invited customers to join in celebrating 35 years of continued service at the Cornwall store where it all began. Customers were able to enjoy a handful of activities such as face-painting, a visit with Farm Boy mascot, Lulu the cow, and a chance to whet their appetites with tasty samples from local suppliers. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to be entered in a draw to win a $100 Farm Boy gift card. From its humble beginnings as a small 300 square foot fresh produce store on Cumberland Street, the store has done a lot of growing in 35 years, with 23 stores across Ontario and over 3,000 employees to date. Founder Jean-Louis Bellemare says that the store’s dedication quality has been instrumental in their continued growth and success. “We started with one store and a truck,”
said Bellemare. “Our focus has always been on great food, great service, and 35 years in, nothing’s really changed.” Bellemare says that the store’s steady growth over the years has allowed them to place even greater focus on providing customers with the best possible experience. “We’ve always tried to hire the best people for the job, because we understand that it’s what makes the store better.” Having always kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, Bellemare says he’s proud of how far the store has come. “When you’re passionate about something, all of a sudden, you’ve been at it for 35 years, and you still love it.” said Bellemare. “We could have never envisioned that we’d be where we are today.” Farm Boy has been twice selected as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, boasting a unique and friendly, fresh-market shopping experience. The company plans to continue its expansion across Ontario with more stores planned slated to open this year.

CORNWALL, Ontario - In reaction to the attack at a mosque in Quebec City by a rightwing extremist that took the lives of six people, Imam Usmaan Alam says that we must learn that an attack on one Canadian is an attack on all and that political disagreements are not worth killing over. “You always thought this was something that could happen south of the 49 or in the Middle East,” said Alam, who was born and raised in the Cornwall area. “You never thought it would happen here.” The Imam said that fear was felt by those at prayers Monday morning. “People were very fearful and speechless,” he said. “Many people in the community have offered condolences however and they have been very kind.” Alam also commented that politics should not be a reason for violence and that violence should not be allowed do divide our community. “Politics is no reason to harm someone else,” he said. “Those six people, we pray for their families. When he shot those bullets they had far reaching consequences and challenged our unity as a community. We have to accept that this is an attack on all Canadians. Parents are
