Upcoming festival a breath of fresh air for garlic lovers Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - As the first Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival draws ever closer, additions to the free, family-friendly event keep sprouting. With a basket of the fat, pungent bulbs in hand at Lamoureux Park on Friday (August 21), organizers announced the festival will now feature more than 50 vendors and a chuckwagon breakfast with all local products. The small media conference also called for artists, musicians, and volunteers. “Garlic goes with everything, right?” joked Brenda Norman, owner of Monkland’s Kozroots Garlic and Herb Farm and leader of Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects (KCEP), the non-profit organization presenting the festival. The one-day event is happening at Lamoureux Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday (August 30). Proceeds will go towards the Green Thumbs Project, a new initiative launching in

spring 2016, for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Festival activities include: cooking demonstrations, Iron Man obstacle course, pie baking contest, drumming circle, corn roast, live musical entertainment, artists’ corner, Zumba, yoga, and a guest appearance from Ontario Garlic Book author Peter McClusky. Norman says there is still time to register your family, company, or organization in the Iron Man and enter the pie contest. Meanwhile, organizers are still looking for volunteers to help with greeting guests, children’s activities, the breakfast event, and setup and teardown. In addition, artists and musicians interested in participating in the inaugural event are also invited to register. Artists will be part of a designated corner near the clock tower, while the buskers will be spread out throughout the grounds to entertain guests. For more information about the festival, visit

Numbered company, with methadone clinic ties, buys downtown building CORNWALL, Ontario – A numbered company with connections to methadone clinics in Ontario is a new owner of a building in downtown Cornwall. Land registry documents obtained by Seaway News show that numbered company “1276154 Ontario Limited” is one of the new owners of a building at 41 Second Street West - a former call centre. The sale was completed July 13 for nearly $362,000. An online search for 1276154 Ontario Limited shows connections to other methadone clinics in places like London, Ont. and Sault Ste. Marie operated by Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres. Another numbered company with no online profile is also listed as a new owner of 41 Second Street West. What is unclear, at least officially, is whether a new methadone clinic may be setting up in Cornwall, or the existing facility on Marlborough Street is considering making a move. Change Health Care operates the methadone clinic on Marlborough Street in Cornwall. A person who answered the phone at the Marlborough location told Seaway News the clinic is switching locations, but referred further questions to Change Health Care’s Kingston offices. Kate Johnston, clinic co-ordinator for Change Health Care in Kingston, could not answer questions concerning a move when reached, and repeated subsequent attempts to offer her a chance to comment on this story have not been

accepted. Likewise Seaway News visited the Cornwall clinic location in person and staff members were not answering questions. “We got an email yesterday saying not to say anything,” said one individual behind the counter Thursday. Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres has not yet responded to a request for comment. But on the heels of weeks of rumours about a new methadone clinic downtown, concern is now spreading like wildfire among business owners who are not pleased. “They had one here a few years ago near the library…a needle-exchange or something. I walked by there one day and there were all kinds of needles in the alley,” said Stuart Gordon, owner of Gordon Jewellers on Second Street West. “To me that kind of thing belongs at the hospital…not the middle of downtown.” Gordon, a member of the Cornwall Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA), plans to bring the issue up with other colleagues. DBIA officials discussed the issue at a meeting held this week. Cornwall Chamber of Commerce president Denis Carr said he had no problem with the move, so long as all the necessary permits and zoning rules are followed. “Would you notice if you didn’t know what was going on in there?” he said. “The one on Marlborough Street – I didn’t even know what that was. “I mean, we have a probation office downtown. And (the location) is right next to the courthouse, so

The property on Second Street West still has the signage of a call centre which has since moved on. we will have a police presence.” Seaway News has spoken with officials connected to the real estate deal concerning the building at 41 Second Street West, who indicated a numbered company had purchased the building. A real estate banner that was hanging in front of the building last Wednesday had been removed by Thursday. Methadone is prescribed for opiate drug addicts as a way to help them combat the urges that come with addiction. It’s an effective and legal substitute for heroin or other narcotics like Oxycontin, opium and Percocet to name a few. Methadone, which is typically administered orally, has been used in treatment programs since

the 1960’s. It stabilizes cravings and helps wean addicts off drugs. Some downtown business owners who spoke with Seaway News wondered aloud if city hall might be able to prevent the move, but chief administrative officer Norm Levac said not likely. “If it complies with zoning, there’s not much we can do,” he said. In Ontario, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is responsible for ensuring the quality of care provided by methadoneprescribing physicians. The CPSO also monitors methadone prescribing and identifies potential prescribing problems through its database of Ontario methadone prescribers and recipients.

Planning committee gives green light to new medical marijuana zoning rules Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - City councillors are expected to rubber stamp new zoning provisions approved Monday night concerning medical marijuana operations. Cornwall’s planning advisory committee (PAC) agreed Monday to a slew of new rules that spell out specifically how such a facility will be regulated in the city, in so far as location and security are concerned. “There were no dissenting votes,” said Coun.

David Murphy. PAC is made up solely of city councillors, so it’s expected the committee’s decision will be ratified at an upcoming council meeting. Any medical marijuana facility will have to conduct its operation completely indoors, on fenced private property with outside surveillance equipment and owners must provide a valid Health Canada licence to municipal officials before beginning work. Murphy said the new rules are stringent enough to allay many concerns.

“I’ve had family members take it. And I’ve seen the positive effects,” he said. “It’s very regulated. If there’s an industry more regulated than this, I’d like to see it. “If anything the rules are more stringent for this industry.” The city’s fire department and police services must also be officially notified. The city’s existing zoning provisions do not contain rules concerning the establishment of a medical marijuana facility. Such a facility, if it were approved by city hall,

would be built within the city industrial park, likely north of the Tenth Street extension. The city has received four enquiries for commercial medical marijuana production facilities. It should be noted that while hundreds of applications have been made to Health Canada, only a small percentage have been approved at the federal level. Federal regulations issued by Health Canada came into effect on April 1, 2014 which permits federally licensed commercial production facilities of medical marijuana. Get expert advice today. CoTiCon doubles attendance in second year Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s not just about comics and costumes at CoTiCon - hundreds of geeks unite and form alliances. Organizers say the second edition of Cornwall’s Tiny Convention doubled its previous attendance, drawing over 300 young people to the Civic Complex on Saturday (August 22). “I think this went really well – way better than last year,” said CoTiCon founder Annie Derochie. Numerous convention-goers enjoyed engaging with a panel of geek-culture experts, squaring off in gaming sessions, and showing off custom-made costumes in the mini-masquerade (cosplay contest). The international phenomena of cosplay (costume play) is the art of dressing up as one of

your favourite fictional characters. Despite being an avid cosplayer, the 18-year-old Summerstown resident is all business when it comes to CoTiCon. “I just dressed normally in geeky clothing, because I knew there was no way I would be able to cosplay here – it’s too crazy,” she said. DeRochie founded the convention in 2014, as part of the Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre (CBEC) Summer Company youth entrepreneurial program. According to 18-year-old Katrina Primeau, the event “brings outcasts together.” “Finding a whole bunch of people like this in Cornwall gives other cosplayers more confidence to be ourselves,” she said, dressed as anime character Haruka Nanase. Primeau noted the improved organization of this year’s convention, which also featured over 40 exhibitors, contests, meet and greets, and card

game tournaments (Magic: The Gathering, Yu-GiOh!, Pokemon) going on at any given moment. Nefer, a 28-year-old cosplayer from Serbrooke, Que., enjoyed CoTiCon for its modest scale and organic vibe in contrast to large, hectic ‘comic con’ events in major metropolises. With nearly a decade of experience, Nefer has handmade over 30 costumes in painstaking detail. “It’s the people, the friends you make, and

learning how to create costumes, you start from scratch so it’s a challenge. And I like getting deep into the character – it’s an escape. During the day I work as an analyst,” said Nefer, who asked not to use her real name. “CoTiCon was small, but quite nice, and super-friendly.” Fo r more information, visit www.coticon.com.

A REAL SUPERHERO: Teen with new lungs shares experiences with other youngsters Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Forget Spider-Man, Superman and even the Incredible Hulk...Myles Lynch has got them all beat. The Cornwall teenager, fresh off his run this summer as a torch bearer at the 2015 Pan-Am Games in Toronto, visited school children at a day care in Ingleside Friday to talk about his

experiences. The children were treated all week to visits from superheroes - some in costumes, and some wearing uniforms of police, doctors and vets but Myles is a real inspiration because he completed his 200-metre run with a new set of lungs. Last October the cystic fibrosis patient, who had just 25 per cent lung capacity, underwent a double-transplant of the life-sustaining organs.

“Last October I couldn’t imagine running 200 metres, let alone walking it,” he said. “It was incredible. The people were cheering. Cops are surrounding you. You feel so safe and secure.” Lynch was running in the torch relay as a representative of sick children. Youtube music videos he created to document his struggles with CF and the wait leading up to the transplant got the attention of relay organizers.

“You’re representing the children in the hospital...and everyone who has been a part of athletics. It was so great,” he said. Lynch was invited to speak with a collection of children at The Learning Centre, a summer daycare program operated by the Glengarry Inter-Agency Group within Rothwell-Osnabruck School in Ingleside, west of Cornwall.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mike Arcand can still remember, now with fondness, the occasion more than 40 years ago when he had to sleep at what was then known as Long Sault Yarns. It was March 1972, and the so-called ‘Storm of the Century’ was dumping reams of snow on North America. Arcand and a few dozen of his closest friends had to spend the night at the plant because roads were impassable. It’s one of hundreds of stories likely to be swapped during a reunion for Long Sault Yarns taking place in October. “It’s a chance to reconnect,” said Arcand. “The plant has been closed for 10 years now, and about 25 people who used to work there have passed away. “So we want to get together.” The reunion is taking place Oct. 3 at the Army, Navy, Air Force Hall on Marlborourgh Street in Cornwall at 8 p.m. Arcand said the plant employed nearly 300 people at its maximum, but when the doors closed in 2005 that number had dropped to less than 200. The plant underwent a number of name and ownership changes after opening 50 years ago...way back in 1965. It was known as Dominion Textiles until 1998, when things changed to Cavalier. Then from 2001 to the closing in 2005 Gildan Activewear was the chief employer. Arcand worked at the plant right up until its closing, nearly a 40-year stretch. “We wanted to do a reunion a couple of years ago, but we couldn’t,” he said. “But now people are saying let’s do it.” Tickets ($5) for the reunion can be picked up at The Grind on Second Street in Cornwall, or by contacting organizers at 613-534-2264, 613-930-0789, 613-347-3382, 613-363-4521 or 613-534-2978.

• Replacement of the underpasses at County Road 15 (Avonmore) (WP 4382-01-01) and County Road 12 (Wales) (WP 4055-08-01); • Rehabilitation of the underpass at Power Dam Drive (WP 4043-10-01); and • Potential road closures during construction. Should road closures be required at any of the underpasses during construction, temporary detour routes will be established. THE PROCESS The Environmental Assessment Study for the replacement of the Avonmore Road and Wales Drive underpasses is following the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000), and will be documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR). As part of the study process, a Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held to provide an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed underpass replacements, including potential impacts and proposed mitigation. Members of the Project Team will be available to discuss the project and answer any questions you may have. The PIC will be held as follows: Date:

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 Location: South Stormont Community Hall 2 Mille Roches Road Long Sault, Ontario Time: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Upon completion of the study, the TESR will be filed for a 30-day public review period. Newspaper notices will be published at that time to explain the review process and identify locations where the TESR can be viewed. A separate Environmental Assessment Study for the rehabilitation of the Power Dam Drive underpass is also being completed following the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘C’ projects under the Class EA. For this project, the Class EA process will be documented in an Environmental Screening Document (ESD). COMMENTS

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s more than a game for Ashleigh Latreille. Fresh off a gold medal win with the Cornwall Coyotes U-14 A team at the Lakeshore tournament in Montreal, the 13-year-old is hosting a soccer fundraiser in Glen Walter on Sunday to help build a well in Kenya, with a goal of $5,000.

“With a local well, children will have more time for education. They won’t have to wake up at 4:30 a.m. and travel miles and miles to get one single pale of water,” said Latreille. The inspiration for tackling world issues through social justice sparked at a recent Me to We Leadership Centre ‘Take Action Camp’ in Kawartha Lakes, Ont., and various ‘We Day’ events in cities such as Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto.“What’s really wrong today is that we put profit above people, greed above need and the rule of gold above the golden rule,” she said. “You can ignore these problems but the thing about the truth is it can be denied, but not avoided.” Latreille has an opportunity to visit the East African country next summer through the Free The Children organization. “I want to travel to Kenya to step in a new world and learn about it in someone else’s shoes. Most importantly, I want to volunteer alongside a community and make change,” said Latreille. Rain or shine, the soccer fundraiser runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday (August 30) at Glen Walter Regional Park (6626 Wine Crescent). Registration is $15 per participant.

After 27 years in the basement, this member of the family is finally out Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Trevor Jeaurond and his wife bought their home on Paragon Road they lost a member of the family. Jeaurond’s 1978 Kawasaki KH400 was relegated to the basement - underneath the stairs, in fact. The bike was only 10 years old, but with life and a family taking a priority over the open road, the Kawasaki was forced into an early retirement. “It was running when I put it in the

basement, but I didn’t have a place to put it,” said Jeaurond. “So I put it under the stairs.” That was 27 years ago...but Jeaurond’s motorcycle is making a comeback. Big time. With the help of his “son-in-law to be” David McDonell the duo set to restoring the bike and are in the homestretch of a return to the road. The restoration work began in the spring and the bike has experienced a renaissance that includes everything from engine pieces that have come from all over the world, to other items that were put away when the motorcycle

entered storage. In the late 1970s, when Jeaurond was just 16, he traded in another motorcycle for the brand new KH400 for about $1,200. It was your typical “crotch rocket” – built for speed over style. Jeaurond has a new plan for the bike now. The KH400 has mirrors, upright handlebars and a grab handle on the back end that was removed when it was all about looking cool in front of your friends. “I have to thank my wife (Mary-Ann) for not letting me sell it,” he said. “Everybody I have

talked to that had a motorcycle wishes they would have kept them.” Jeaurond accessed a wealth of knowledge online via a Canadian website that offers tips for Kawasaki enthusiasts, and he’s even reconnected with locals with an affinity for riding, including the experts at Bob’s Cycle in Cornwall. “I know there are people who have bikes like this in their basement,” he said. “Let’s see them on the roads.” The KH400 will see the road before the snow flies. Jeaurond has “a bit of tinkering” to finish on the engine to guard against leaks. But then it’s time to roll.

New IPM mural unveiled CORNWALL, Ontario - The Counties administration building unveiled a new mural with an impressive autumn landscape in anticipation for the 2015 Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM). Local artist Laura Stevens, winner of the IPM poster contest, created the mural, capturing the IPM beautification theme of sunflowers and scarecrows. The eye-catching art piece (approximately 15 feet x 10 feet) has taken over the administration building’s front windows in downtown Cornwall. “The colours chosen, truly exemplify both the IPM and SDG Logos, and were specifically used to

create a rural landscape, in a bright, cheery and welcoming manner,” said Terry Besner, economic development and communications officer at United Counties of SDG. Residents and businesses across SDG are creating displays to welcome the thousands of anticipated IPM visitors to the area; many local hotels are already booked to capacity. All are encouraged to join the IPM beautification contest to showcase the region to the potential 100,000 visitors next month. Entries must be received by August 30, no entry fee, contact beautification@ipm2015.ca. For more information, visit www.plowingmatch.org.

Food Fest hits the spot Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - As Cornwall’s appetite for new summer events grows, Beyond 21 helps more adults with developmental disabilities flourish past high school. Seeing food trucks, exhibitors, and performers lining the downtown street at the new aptly titled fundraiser, Food Fest left Michelle Pilon with a taste of nostalgia on Saturday (August 22). “When we were young, Pitt Street was closed off like this, and people were walking through all the time. It’s nice to see this again,” she said. Sitting on a curb in the sun, Pilon and her three young boys enjoyed their spoils from Big D’s and Rico Peru, while others followed their nose to restaurant sidewalk tasting stations. “I think it’s fantastic. OPINION

Time for some answers from new owners of 41 Second Street West Todd Lihou

todd.lihou@tc.tc

Cornwall’s downtown has undergone shifts since the likes of Todd Lihou happened upon this Earth. When I was a kid Pitt Street was a mall, closed to all traffic including bicycles and skateboards. It was a place we went as youngsters to get yelled at by business owners, presumably because we were chasing away customers by riding to and fro on the ‘Pitt Street Promenade’ atop our vehicle of choice. Things have changed since then. Pitt Street is just that today – a place for cars to visit, spilling their passengers into our downtown to hopefully spend some time (and money) at downtown shops and businesses. The fear of children on bicycles has been replaced these days, with genuine concern about adults and drugs. Word began spreading earlier this summer that a methadone clinic was rumoured to be considering a permanent home downtown. Last week I picked up some land registry documents that show a numbered company, with connections to other methadone clinics in Ontario operated by Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres (OATC), is now an owner of a property at 41 Second Street West – just a few doors down from the corner of Pitt and Second. While nothing has been confirmed by tightlipped methadone clinic operators, it appears possible (likely?) that a methadone clinic could (will?) become the newest member of the downtown core.

If (when?) that happens, it will be a blight on a downtown where business owners have fought valiantly to chart an unsteady course. I’d love to tell you exactly what the new owners have planned for the building, but sadly no one is talking. I left a number of messages with the operators of an existing methadone clinic on Marlborough Street in Cornwall that some have said is switching venues – no answers. Likewise, trying to get someone from OATC is easier than finding the Lindbergh baby. Phone calls to OATC’s head office rings to voicemail, where one is instructed to visit the company website instead of leaving a message. A response to an email is promised within 72 hours…but it’s been more than 100 hours since my electronic missive (yup, I’ve done the math) and the only thing coming out of OATC is the sound of crickets. Business owners deserve more than silence – answers to questions are important now that more than just a newspaper hack is asking. People with names like Gordon, Munro and Pommier are surely concerned, if not angry, at the prospects of a methadone clinic establishing itself just a few doors away. This rant isn’t to suggest methadone clinics aren’t important. They provide a valuable service to people who need help getting the monkey off their back. But there’s a time and (most importantly) a place for everything, and downtown is not where I want to see a methadone clinic established. Just a few blocks east of 41 Second Street West is the former Cornwall General Hospital, where private developers are itching to fill space for their one-stop health

and wellness facility. It’s close to public transportation and would mesh nicely with a neighbourhood that already includes a long-term care home and has infrastructure in place to handle methadone clinic patients. Cornwall city hall could also learn a thing or two from the City of London which has rules in place governing the locations a methadone clinic can operate. The Waterloo Record reported the London measures direct the busier methadone clinics to areas of the city dominated by offices, strip malls and institutions like hospitals. The newspaper also suggested London requires larger waiting rooms for methadone clinics to reduce the number of people outside the clinics. There are no such rules in Cornwall, I was told by a planning official this week.

London, said the Record, wants to keep the high-volume clinics out of pedestrian-oriented environments to reduce the potential for conflicts with neighbours and passersby. These clinics must also be at least 300 metres from schools, libraries, pools and arenas. Sadly, I wonder if there is anything that can be done if a methadone clinic sign is someday soon planned for 41 Second Street West. The property has been sold, there are no rules on the city hall books preventing its creation and one has to wonder if there is a political will to wade into this fight. In the meantime, it’s time for some answers from individuals operating behind the anonymity of the numbered companies that now own 41 Second Street West. Businesses downtown deserve it.

- Re-open the veterans service centers that Mr. Harper closed. Centers desperately needed to treat the physical and mental injuries of soldiers that Mr. Harper sent into harm’s way. - Re-open the 3 closed coast guard communications centers and prevent disasters like the Burrard Inlet Oil spill. Locally, we could institute better contingencies for accidents like the sunken tugs on the St. Lawrence river. - Increase quality post-secondary education in the riding and subsidize more co-op placements so that young people don’t have to leave the com-

munity to get training and experience. Money can accomplish a lot of good or it can be spent on telling you through radio and television ads how great Guy and the Conservatives think they are. Bernadette Clement and the Liberal Party of Canada believe there are better ways to spend our tax dollars to help communities like ours. It is about time we had a representative who treated this job (and your money) seriously. Jamie Labonte, Avonmore

letters

Editor: “If I had a million dollars” is such a great song. Who wouldn’t like to spend a million dollars? What about $750 million? Guy Lauzon and Conservatives spent $750 million of your tax dollars over the last nine years. That’s over $83 million annually since 2006. How? They spent it on themselves. They used this money to advertise conservative programs. They even advertised programs that the government never actually rolled out. That’s right. They spent your money talking about programs that they haven’t implemented If you had a million, sorry seven hundred and fifty million dollars, what would YOU do with it? When you elect a member of parliament, this is the

kind of question they have to answer. It’s their job. We KNOW how Guy Lauzon and the Conservatives would spend it; on themselves, but how COULD we spend it? Here’s what it COULD do: - Ensure the United Counties of SDG were snow plowed for an approx. 178 years. - Implement universal broadband so that rural communities have consistent and reliable highspeed internet, bringing businesses and opportunities to our riding. - Hire 13,000 full time nurses OR 2,500 Full time physicians. Imagine no line-ups. - Pay for 44,650 pre-school children in full time daycare. This currently comes mostly from womens’ salaries.

If true that thousands of married Canadians have been caught up in the world-wide Ashley Madison affair (no pun intended), telephones should soon be ringing off the hook, as we said before cell phones and texting took over, at the offices of divorce lawyers, who will become the big winners in this sordid scandal. In case you have just emerged from a cave, Ashley Madison is not a cosmetic line. That’s Mary Kay. The two have nothing in common. Ashley Madison is a website that facilitates/encourages cheating by spouses, also known as clandestine one-night stands. The Madison client list, said to include thousands of names, has been breached by hackers and is now available for anyone who has the know-how and time to play private detective. Nobody should be surprised that more than a handful of Cornwall and area names are showing up on the list, most of them said to be husbands. It is natural for most of us to wonder who is on the list. But is it any of our business? The short answer is no. This doesn’t concern the Criminal Code of Canada. Not all that long ago in this country, gay folks lived in fear of being outed. And if their secret lifestyle was discovered and dragged into the court of public opinion, some committed suicide. In the wake of the Madison client list being hacked, a Toronto newspaper has reported that two persons said to be on the list committed suicide.

Most, if not all, mainstream news organization will choose not to print the names. However, the names will find their way to less traditional news sites. And the names will be read and tossed around in the court of public opinion. Many lives and families will be destroyed. During the debate over homosexual rights, Pierre Trudeau said that there is no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation. Long before that, Jesus, speaking about adultery, said “Let he without sin cast the first stone.” It is something we should keep in mind when it comes to the Ashley Madison client list. THIS AND THAT Preem Kathy’s decision to campaign against S. Harper and Co. might help the federal Liberals in some parts of the province, but throwing verbal darts at the Conservatives and calling for their demise isn’t going to be of any benefit to the uphill Liberal uphill in Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry where the preem and her government are as popular as a backside boil. ... If election day is the only poll that counts, why do political parties and candidates spend millions of dollars on pre-election day polls? ... Cornwall native Royal Galipeau, incumbent Conservative MP in the new riding of Orleans (Ottawa), is seeking a fourth term but it won’t be easy. He is up against Liberal candidate Andrew Leslie, a high-profile retired lieutenant-general who would be a shoo-in as defence minister in a Justin Trudeau cabinet. ... Good bet that all three federal party leaders will put in an appearance at the International Plowing Match (IPM) in Finch. Does anybody care? DEATH-BED WISH An obituary for a New Jersey

CORNWALL, Ontario – Once Bath Solutions Cornwall has completed your renovation, you’ll never want to leave your bathroom. From full-scale to partial renovations, Bath Solutions can transform your private space into a luxury spa or simply install a safer entry into your bathtub/shower. “From new construction to retrofits, we do all things bathroom,” said Rick Parks, owner and operator. After opening a Cornwall office in May 2013, the full-service renovation and installation company has relocated to South Glengarry, adding 1,000 sq.ft. of workshop space for inventory. “We just keep building,” he said. Being a lifelong landlord, Rick wanted an affordable alternative to old, tired tiled walls, with grout lines that are impossible to clean. It only took one experience with Bath Solutions to inspire him to become a franchise owner. The main draw: the clean, modern look, backed with a lifetime guarantee for Bath Solutions’ custom acrylic bathwall and the company’s expanding product line. The custom bath wall systems are made with the highest quality acrylic, up to 50 percent thicker than other available products, and are coated with a UV protective layer along with an anti-microbial layer called Microban. “It’s so much more durable than the alternatives out there,” said Rick. Bath Solutions’ tub liners also offer a less intrusive way to remodel a bathroom without disrupting pre-existing tiles. Safety is also a main priority for the growing business. The company specializes in quick bathtub to shower conversions for clients who have access issues. Design consultant Abbie Parks believes renovations are about much more than just paint. She meets with clients to provide on-site estimates and free consultations for bathroom faucet replacement, bathtub and whirlpool replacement and installation, bathroom vanities and mirrors, shower door installation, shower replacement and installation, toilet and bidet replacement and installation, walk-in bathtub installation, and custom bathwall systems. “We’re on time, on budget, locally owned and operated, and we know renovation. Every job is very customized and clean,” said Abbie. For more information, call (613) 936-8741 or visit bathsolutionscornwall.ca Eliminates unsightly and unhealthy mildew, mold and bacteria.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Molly Mu has a family in China - but she’s also got a Canadian mom. Mu, 20, has spent the last four years in Canada, initially as a Canada Homestay Network client, and now as a civil engineering student at the University of Waterloo. Her Canadian mother is Brenda Manning, who also happens to be a relationship manager with Canada Homestay. Manning said Mu’s story is not unlike other students who spend time here in Canada,

progressing through high school and learning English along the way. “It’s the language of business,” she said, pointing to the fact that many of the parents of Homestay students operate their own companies, and look to their children to succeed them in the world of commerce. But beyond the logic of the move, and the bottom line, relationships are fostered. Lise Brisson, a senior who opened her home to boys from South America, said the connections she ha made will last a lifetime. “Every day, when they went to school, began with a hug,” she said. “I have no regrets. It brings me something that I wouldn’t normally have. I really enjoy it.” There will be nearly 100 students from overseas learning at Upper Canada District School Board facilities in its east region. the number balloons to about 350 if one factors in the entire board jurisdiction. Manning said the students hail from far off places like Spain, Columbia, Germany and even the Canary Islands. In the case of Mu, Xinjiang, China is home - but only when she’s actually there. Canada has become her adopted homeland. “The most important thing about being in From left are Kristin Cornish, Molly Mu, Brenda Manning and Lise Brisson. Foster play takes audiences back in time Roxanne Delage

6371470

CORNWALL, Ontario - Upper Canada Playhouse audiences will be taken on a fantastical trip back in time, when Gentleman Clothier, by Norm Foster, opens, next month. “You generally know what to expect with Foster,” said Donnie Bowes, Playhouse artistic director. “The audience is pretty confident that he’s a very funny man and looks at life through a comic lens. He talks about things that we can all relate to and pretty well represents the lives, the wishes and the downfalls of the everyday person.” “I didn’t know what to expect when I saw the world premiere (of Gentleman Clothier), last year,

in Port Dover,” said Bowes who decided then and there, that he would be bringing the play back with him, to eastern Ontario, this season. “It’s just a marvellous experience I think the audiences are really going to enjoy it.” It is the story of a suit maker from Halifax, who always wanted to have his own business. He soon hires on a young, vivacious, punk-rocker-type woman, who comes from a long line of suit makers, as well as young man, a jack-of-all-trades, whose daughter is ill… Frustrated about living in modern times, the suit maker makes a wish which completely transforms his life, landing him in a different era, and

Chris McHarge, who directed the Port Dover production, directs this one as well. “The audience will not only enjoy Fosters observational humour, the play leaves you really Brian Young who plays the Gentleman Clothier, in the upcoming Norm Foster play, opening at the Playhouse in September.

100 PORTRAITS: Cornwall photographer is immortalizing subjects in unique settings Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - How does one illuminate a chicken coop for a photograph? Cornwall photographer Frank Burelle doesn’t know - but he’ll soon find out. Burelle is in the midst of completing a personal project to photograph dozens of people in interesting settings and circumstances for his 100 Portraits Project. The biggest challenge with an upcoming project will be to shoot a man and his guitar, while in the confines of the individual’s chicken coop. “We were discussing his portrait and he said he had this guitar,” said Burelle, lamenting his struggles with trying to bring the portrait to life with more content. “And this guy asked me if I wanted to shoot it with his chickens. “That’s an instant hell yes.” The 100 Portraits Project is just that - a collection of local people who submit to have their photos immortalized in black and white so that Burelle can hone his skills in the name of Yousuf Karsh - a world-famous Canadian portrait photographer. “I was obsessed with his stuff for the longest time,” said Burelle. “This is a guy who has done

Hemingway, Picasso and Churchill. “I wanted to be become better with that kind of portrait. But I had no experience with that.” But Burelle has parlayed that lack of experience into a gallery of 33 images that speak to viewers because they tell the story of individuals and their passions. There are intimate images of people swimming, acting out, playing sports and just smiling. “I created the project to bring the portraits to me,” said Burelle. “I picked 100 because it’s a big enough number to be a challenge, but not too big that it is (daunting).” But there were challenges. “I didn’t want to do 100 portraits of children,” he said with a laugh, adding that not long after he announced the project parents were lining up to have their children and babies immortalized. “I didn’t want it to be that exclusive.” Some photos have been shot in studio, on location and even his living room. Next up is the chicken coop. “I don’t know how I’m going to light that,” he said. “And will the flash freak out the chickens? I don’t know.” Burelle is seeking more subjects for his project. You can get information on the 100 Portraits Project at frankburelle.ca/100.html.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A sod-turning ceremony was held at the site of the new fire hall for Glen Walter. The event officially launches construction of the building that will be located near the intersection of Bray Street and Street ‘A’, with direct road access to County Road 2. “The site of the new fire hall is ideally located to best serve the residents of Glen Walter and the surrounding area,” said Mayor Ian McLeod. “Council is looking forward to seeing this project move another step closer to completion.” The contract for the construction of the new fire hall was awarded to Grant Marion Construction at a council meeting held last month. Construction will begin immediately and is expected to be completed by December. “The relocation and construction of a new fire hall is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling projects in a firefighter’s career,” said Fire Chief Vic Leroux. “A new fire hall will not only address the community’s current fire service needs, but also our future needs for the next 50-plus years. “The firefighters of the station in Glen Walter are definitely looking forward to the day when they will be able to serve their community from the new fire station.”

Rec equipment purchased in South Glengarry CORNWALL, Ontario - New recreational equipment has been purchased in South Glengarry, thanks to an external grant. A $3,000 grant from TransCanada Corporation’s Community Investment Program was used to purchase new equipment for pickleball, croquet and badminton. “Ideally, the township would like to introduce programs that are accessible to multiple demographics within the community,” said Joanne Haley, general manager of community services, “The equipment purchased with these funds will certainly help us reach that goal.” The township applied to the grant program in December after identifying a need to expand

on the programming and equipment available to residents through the recreation department. “This initiative...will contribute to the overall wellbeing and quality of life of our residents,” South Glengarry Mayor Ian McLeod added. Jon Pitcher, Community Relations Representative for the Energy East Pipeline project in Ontario, reaffirmed TransCanada Corporation’s dedication to working with local communities along the proposed pipeline route. “We are committed to helping develop communities wherever we operate and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle is an important part of this pledge,” he said.

GOLF

Golfers are evolving and so are the courses! With the advent of high-performance clubs and balls that travel further and further, golf courses must constantly be adapting to new realities. Thanks to new technologies, golfers now have access to equipment that can improve the power of their swings. The design of clubs is much more forgiving when precision is in short supply, and drives of more than 300 yards have become common. Equipment manufacturers have also revolutionized the golf ball. Depending on the material, compression, and the number of dimples, this small white ball can adapt to the

style of the golfer and to different playing conditions. If this technological revolution has contributed to improving the performance of players, golf-club owners have had to adapt their courses in order to offer new challenges. This has resulted in some holes being lengthened, additional obstacles, more undulating greens, and other modifications to increase the level of difficulty. At the end of the day, elite golfers continue to do well and to enjoy the challenge of the new

courses, even if their scores stay at the same level. On the other hand, the game has become a much more difficult challenge for recreational golfers who, without having the most up-todate equipment, must try and overcome the

same obstacles. That said, despite all the technological advances, golf is still a game of strategy, filled with subtleties. A 300-yard drive isn’t worth much, if your next shot ends up in the water or if you miss your famous two-foot putt!

Question de piquer votre curiosité, voici quelques termes français à privilégier.

Indians prevail - National Junior B Champions league scoring leader Kaheriios Montour into the fold from Kanawake, utilized the speed and finesse of talented rookie Skylar Thomas, supplemented their offence with Russ Oakes, Blaze Riordan and Sky Sunday and put their opponents to sleep winning 13 of 14 play-off games, including a 3-1 series win over the beast from Six Nations. The Indians were for real and proved it going undefeated in Calgary last week winning their first ever Founders Cup. They had twenty-five weapons that came to play every night and coaches Thompson and Brandon Francis pushed all the right buttons. In Cornwall’s long and storied Lacrosse history, Roy Ledoux was a goalie during his playing days, coached youth teams of the seventies glory days and for this reason or that, found himself associated to the Akwesasne Lacrosse

junior programs as club General Manager. Associated to the game as long as Roy has, there are often more disappointments than there are moments of happiness. Sure, the thrill of competition, seeing kids work hard and have fun are all part of it. But winning is what its all about and for Roy Ledoux, he has to be just over the moon proud of his team. A team that included Cornwall kids, Matt Bourassa 50 pts. and Derek Lister 38 pts. Celtics Liam Vipond was called up for the playoff push. Niawen’kó:wa Indians, what a thrill ride this year truly was.

The 2015 Junior B Lacrosse Founders Cup champions are the Akwesasne Indians. How did a team that started 0-3, were 3-4 after seven games do it? Adam Thompson’s team had the right mix of everything a coach desires and then some. He had skill at every position, he had toughness, even had a few guys who kept opponents thinking about running through the box and coming out with their heads on their shoulders. But what the 2015 Indians had above all others was a leader. A leader who arrived for the Indians 9th game, a leader with tremendous skills and played with an evil edge game in and game out. University of Albany attacker Seth Oakes. How good was the captain, 72 points in 11 regular season games and another 65 points in 14 play-off games. Not mention leading all Founders Cup scorers with 45 points in seven games. As many as a dozen years ago, Lana King from Akwesasne wondered if I would consider handling the public address microphone for Akwesasne Indians lacrosse. Of course I said yes.

The Turtle Dome became a second home covering four different leagues including the Junior B’s. The Indians teams were always good, they had talent year in and year out, usually 3 or 4 kids from Cornwall made the team and first round play-off success was guaranteed. It was the second round that the clubs from Clarington, Halton Hills and Oakville drove that dagger home. If you did get by the Toronto based clubs, the lacrosse juggernaut from Six Nations ruined your season. With four games left this summer, the Indians had a weekend date with two perennial favourites. In a brief conversation with the coach, I told him I had seen some good teams over the years, but this one was special. The coach replied, he hoped so. They dispatched Halton Hills and faced undefeated Clarington winning 9-8. The message was sent, the Indians were coming and they were all around ‘team’ special. Over the next month, the Indians relied on goalie Sam Verville, worked a deal to bring

NEWS

There are all sorts of ways of getting there NICK WOLOCHATIUK DANCES WITH WORDS NUTHILLTOOGMAIL.COM Ever since man (or woman) learned to walk he or she begins the quest for a more satisfying and efficient mode of getting from Point A to Point B. If the toddler is an urbanite, the tricycle, and eventually the bicycle, soon becomes the apple of its eye. However, if the youngster is brought up in the boonies, it may yearn for a canoe. I may have some first nation blood in me; as soon as I could I enlisted for a three year tour of duty in the Cub pack of St. Helen’s in Toronto. Why? Because that was a prerequisite for

becoming a Boy Scout. Why did I want to be a Boy Scout? I had been told that in Scout summer camp at Camp Kenabi, Haliburton, we would be taught how to paddle a canoe. Big disappointment! On canoe instruction day, July of 1951, I was faced with the disappointing sight of about ten canoes roped bow-to-stern in a circle, all within the swimming area line of safety buoys. Even before I submitted to the barked command to get into a canoe, I became aware that the instructors didn’t know their bow from their stern (I’m sure you know what I figuratively but PC mean by that), for a couple of the canoes were

fastened stern-to-stern or bow-to-bow. Only an expert canoeist can distinguish between the bow and the stern of a canoe. Two to a canoe, we paddled in a comedic, splashing and quite pointless circle. I don’t remember if it was clockwise or counter-clockwise. As soon as my camp ordeal was over, I handed in my resignation. Not until ten years later did I get to paddle a canoe. It was a borrowed one on Sudbury’s Ramsey Lake because - moored out of reach of my 55mm Asahi Pentax S1a lens – beckoned a floatplane I wanted to photograph.

“Sure, we can lend you a canoe. Do you know how to paddle?” Of course I did – or so I thought. Out into the lake I boldly ventured, full of the blind confidence of a 21-year-old. I headed for the Cessna 180. Out into the choppy lake the canoe headed, exactly where the stiff crosswind took it. I never did get the photograph. It took me quite a while to bring the canoe back to the seaplane base by walking along the rocky Canadian Shield shoreline, leading the canoe like a balky16-foot dog on a leash. Amazingly, I soon became a canoeing instructor – but that’s another story.

Congratulations to Margaret Peters and the crew at Glengarry Fine Cheese. They recently entered into the American Cheese Society annual competition, where their Celtic Reserve Blue took Best of Show and the Celtic Original Cheese came in 3rd place in the Blue Cheese category. This is the first time the Best of Show has left the US to decorate a winner. From left are MPP Jim McDonell; Kelli Shaver, South Glengarry Development & Communications Coordinator; Margaret Peters, Owner of Glengarry Fine Cheese and Mayor Ian McLeod. In this day and age of environmental concerns, it’s still unbelievable that some people give little thought to littering. Not a good example for the little ones who watch and imitate what adults do...Let’s clean up our acts!

I was in Cornwall visiting friends last week and came across this amazing little store called Mrs.B’s Gifts and Home Décor on Pitt Street. Everything is so well organized and such a wide variety of items. The sales women are amazing, so friendly and helpful. It was such a treasure that I had to go back the following day to purchase some more items, some for myself and some as gifts. I will certainly go back next time I am visiting.

WHY I’M DIVORCED

Last week was my birthday and I didn’t feel very well waking up on that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping my husband would be pleasant and say, ‘Happy Birthday!’, and possibly have a small present for me. As it turned out, he barely said good morning, let alone ‘Happy Birthday.’ I thought....well, that’s marriage for you, but the kids.... they will remember. My kids came bouncing down stairs to breakfast and didn’t say a word. So when I left for the office I felt pretty low and somewhat despondent. As I walked into my office, my handsome boss Bill, said, ‘Good morning, lady, and by the way Happy Birthday!’ It felt a little better that at least someone had remembered. I worked until one o’clock, when Bill knocked on my door and said, ‘You know, It’s such a beautiful day outside, and it is your birthday, what do you say we go out to lunch, just you and me.’ I said, ‘Thanks, Bill, that’s the greatest thing I’ve heard all day. Let’s go!’ We went to lunch. But we didn’t go where we normally would go. He chose instead a quiet bistro with a private table. We had two martinis each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously. On the way back to the office, Bill said, ‘You know, It’s such a beautiful day...we don’t need to go straight back to the office, do we?’ I responded, ‘I guess not. What do you have in mind?’ He said, ‘Let’s drop by my place, it’s just around the corner.’ After arriving at his house, Bill turned to me and said, ‘If you don’t mind, I’m going to step into the bedroom for just a moment. I’ll be right back.’ ‘Ok.’ I nervously replied. He went into the bedroom and, after a couple of minutes, he came out carrying a huge birthday cake, followed by my husband, my kids, and dozens of my friends and co-workers, all singing ‘Happy Birthday’. And I just sat there.... on the couch.... Naked! .

Can you taste the difference between local and import? Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips: The best maintenance tip is to have a licensed professional service, evaluate and start your central air conditioning unit before the cooling season starts. Here are a few tips to keep your cooling system running effectively and efficiently: • Check your indoor drain hose for leaks or blockages. • Clean or replace furnace air filters once a month. • With the power off, use a hose to keep the outside air conditioning unit clean and clear of debris. • Basements seldom need cooling so close basement air vents and close doors to the basement.
