CORNWALL, Ontario - Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Lancaster Wednesday morning (Aug. 26) to tout new broadband connection initiatives supported by the Conservative party. During a campaign stop at agricultural retailer Munro Agromart on County Road 34, Harper announced that a re-elected Conservative government would invest $200 million towards fiber-optic broadband infrastructure in rural and remote communities that lack high-speed internet, including Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “Fast, reliable internet today is essential to realize economic opportunity and to create jobs,” said Harper. “Right now, Canadians are selling products, managing relationships with customers and suppliers, and recruiting new employees, all online. So much business is now on the internet that small businesses with broadband access can take advantage of opportunities that once were only open to the ‘Big Guys.’” Harper said the government connected nearly 220,000 Canadian households between 2009 and 2012. Through the 2014 Economic Action Plan, the Connecting Canadians program is looking to have an additional 350,000 rural homes with internet speeds of
at least five megabytes per second by 2017. South Glengarry Mayor Ian McLeod viewed the announcement’s location as a sign the Harper government hasn’t bypassed rural Ontario during the election campaign. United Counties of SDG Warden Eric Duncan noted that South Glengarry is one of the first municipalities in rural Ontario to have broadband support before federal government funding was available. “We’ve seen success here and it was kind of fitting and it was great to see it in our riding because, as part of the Eastern Ontario Regional Network, you’ve heard us talk a lot about that,” said Duncan. “The federal government has invested $55 million in eastern Ontario so when you talk about the numbers and see the success, we’re a perfect example of how we’re better connected now because of that federal support.” Duncan says the government’s continued commitment to fiber-optic infrastructure in rural areas is boosting a new phase of economic development. In contrast to a decade ago, when people looking to move to SDG would inquire about the nearest hospital, community centre or school. “The first question they ask now is, ‘What’s your internet service like?’ and ‘What’s the cell service like?’” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario - New traffic laws could end up costing you a heck of a lot more than you think starting this week.
Nearly half a dozen new laws governing Ontario drivers came into effect Sept. 1 or later, increasing fines for those caught using the cell phones behind the wheel, passing cyclists and making allowances for pedestrians.
Cornwall police Const. Matt Dupuis said in an interview the addition of demerit points to traffic offences should serve as a wake-up call to drivers. “After 16 you lose your license,” he said,

adding the accumulation of any demerit points is serious and can garner the attention of the Ministry of Transportation. “If you receive any demerit points and you have a G1 or G2 license you automatically lose your license.” The new rules: Distracted driving: If you’re caught looking at your phone, texting or talking on your phone while driving, look out. As of Tuesday, those found guilty of distracted driving will face fines up to $1,000 (up from $200) and more demerit points. Drivers with G1 or G2 licenses could have their permits suspended on the spot. “People are looking down now and using their phones and hoping the police don’t see them,” said Dupuis. “But you’re not paying attention at all.” Passing cyclists: Drivers will have to give cyclists at least one metre of room wherever possible. And while the fine for breaking this rule has not yet been set by the province, drivers caught opening the door of their vehicle into the path of a cyclist without checking will face fines between $300 and $1,000 and three demerit points. The “move over” law: As of Sept. 1, drivers must slow down and move over whenever they see a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. Also, this new rule applies to stopped tow trucks that have amber lights flashing. The fine for breaking these rules will be $490 and three demerit points. Pedestrian crossovers: Starting in January motorists must wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road at pedestrian crossovers and school crossings before proceeding. The province suggests nearly half of all fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians occur at intersections. This change won’t be enforced until January. Alcohol and drugs: Finally, drivers caught behind the wheel under the influence of drugs will face the same penalties as those impaired by alcohol. These include between a three and 90-day license suspension and a week-long vehicle impoundment. This law is expected to come into place in one year.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It was a double dose of good news for the Agape Centre Wednesday in Cornwall. Agape was provided with $10,000 from RBC Financial Group in Cornwall to help with the purchase of food to help restock the shelves of the soup kitchen and food bank. That’s on top of news Wednesday that Agape has surpassed the $800,000 mark in its quest to raise $1 million for its ‘Within These Walls’ renovation campaign. “We’ve reached $807,000,” said Agape Centre executive director Alyssa Blais. “The Agape Centre will be a very beautiful home for people in need.” The facility is in need of some much-need work, with crumbling infrastructure including ceilings with holes, and a deteriorating staircase to name a few on the list of repairs.
Contractors are already at work completing the renovations. Blais said by October things should be completed, with a November date set for an official unveiling. By then the balance of the funds for the $1-million campaign will be collected. In the meantime the day-to-day operations of the food bank/soup kitchyen continue, and Blais said the $10,000 donation from RBC is incredibly helpful. “We always see a drop in donations to the food bank in the summer,” she said. “RBC has been a strong supporter of the Agape Centre.”

A bird’s eye view of science and nature CORNWALL, Ontario - The River Institute’s summer workshop series wraps up on Saturday, September 12, when ‘Birds in Your Backyard’ takes flight over the OPG visitor centre. The free, family-friendly event runs from noon to 4 p.m. “We are excited to focus on birds for our last workshop of the 2015 season,” said Cristina Charette, education coordinator for the River Institute of Environmental Sciences. Wildlife educators have invited special guests from the Cornwall and Area Birding Club to deliver presentations and host information stations, which will highlight bird biology and identification by featuring skulls, feathers, eggs, and bird calls. Local birder, Jean Louis Rochette, will speak on his decades-long mission to protect and provide homes for Purple Martins. Other members
will discuss preservation of unique local bird and water fowl habitat, such as the work that has been taking place over the last couple of years at Cooper Marsh. “Visitors are encouraged to bring along their cameras as local photographers provide examples of their work along with handy tips on taking pictures of wildlife,” said Karen DouglassCooper, communications director for the River Institute. Participants can then put their newly acquired knowledge to the test as wildlife biologists partner with local experts to lead a bird walk. Children are specially invited to let their imaginations take flight by dropping by the bird craft centre in the lobby. Scopes and binoculars will be available. The summer series is run through a

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: Bird sanctuary event in October Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - Friends of the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary invite the public to come take a walk on the wild side, at its annual Nature and Wildlife Day, to be held on October 4. “It’s one of our largest fundraising days of the year, for the Friends of the Sanctuary,” said board member, Pauline Gagnon, who explained that money raised from the one-day event will benefit the ongoing “Get on Board” project to rejuvenate all the old boardwalks, and to provide winter activities. “There will be attractions for the whole family,” said Gagnon. “We like to make it fun and interesting, not only for the children, but for adults, as well.” Among the many presenters, will be Falcon Environmental, Speaking of Wildlife, Drogheda Manor Horsemanship, Tai Chi demonstrations, Tom Manley Dance Troupe, Chain Saw Carving and the Canadian Carp Club. “We are opening it up to more ideas, should anyone want to participate,” she said. Activities and attractions featured at the event include birdhouse building, food/arts and crafts vendors, face painting, silent auction and duck banding. Artisan vendors will include homemade
goods, wood works, rescued artisan t-shirts and more. “There is still time to register for a booth, while space is available,” said Colleen Leduc, board member. Raffle draw prizes are even bigger and better, this year. First prize is an Inuvik kayak ($1000 value), second prize, Cannondale mountain bike ($750), and third is and Eagle Optics 8x32 binoculars ($450). Tickets are $2 for 3 for $5. CORNWALL, Ontario - From homemade catnip to used books and board games, Roy & Cher’s Animal Rescue offered dedicated yard sale shoppers a bargain for a good cause. Organizers of the not-for-profit organization’s second annual yard sale, held in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 parking lot on Sunday (August 16), expect to raise about $1,000. The first edition collected $900. “People were helping unpack boxes before we even opened at 7 a.m.,” said Angela Parker, founder and director of operations. “All fundraisers we have assist animals from abuse, neglect and abandonment.” The group, also known as Roy & Cher’s Rescue Farm, operates as a network of fosters throughout eastern Ontario. It’s main program focuses on feral felines, having them spayed, and released back into their colonies. “We’re looking for foster homes for feral kittens,” she said. “They need to have a room dedicated to them, it’s only temporary, and to help
socialize them. We also need kitten toys and food. If you go to Pet Valu (on Vincent Massey and Eastcourt) or Stacy’s Pet Depot and buy items there for donation, they’ll make sure we get it.” The volunteer-driven organization was founded in July 2013 and operates solely on donations. After attending an animal rights conference in Washington, Parker enlisted Chantal Contois, of Cornwall, and a handful of friends. The local group, named after two cats Parker adopted, started its crusade after several guinea pigs were surrendered to the animal shelter. Both groups work independently towards the same cause. CORNWALL, Ontario - The pungent aromas wafting through Lamoureux Park smelled just like success to the organizers of the inaugural Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival. More than 70 garlic growers, farmers, artisans, and non-profit organizations lined the park as hundreds feasted on and purchased variations of the popular herb on Sunday (August 30). “What we really hope the community gets out of this is how many local producers are actually
available here,” said Sylvie Paquette, the event’s vendor coordinator. In addition to mounds of garlic and other fresh produce, the festival featured themed cooking demonstrations, pie baking contest, corn roast, live musical entertainment, artists’ corner, drumming circle, Iron Man obstacle course, Zumba, yoga, and a guest appearance from Ontario Garlic Book author Peter McClusky. Garlic Fest proceeds will go towards the Green Thumbs Project, a new initiative with Open Hands for children and adults with developmental disabilities, launching in spring 2016.

Over the last few years we’ve seen a lot of changes in the role of public libraries. Yes, they still provide access to resource materials and our favourite authors, but they’ve also had to be innovative in the way they provide their services. Information is more easily available and there are increasingly new ways to access that information – public libraries have embraced these changing times and strive to provide a relevant, up-to-date place for com-
munity involvement and interaction. SD&G County Library has not been immune to these changes and it is important to us that residents in our communities are aware of everything the library system has to offer. As the new Communications & Marketing Librarian, part of my role is to help keep community members informed of the activities and services provided by the Library, and a newspaper column is one way to achieve this. This month, we’re introducing “Off the Shelf: news from SD&G County Library”, a monthly commentary of what’s going on in your library system. As part of the inaugural column, I also wanted to remind everyone about a new initiative at
the Library called SDG Reads that only has one month left. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved in a book club, or are already part of one, why not take part in the largest one in the Counties! This community book club, invites individuals to pick up a copy of Elizabeth Hay’s novel Alone in the Classroom and then join us to meet the author and discuss the book on Oct. 8. This story is based in rural Canada, and combines interesting characters with an intriguing storyline that takes the reader on a journey through time. After a couple of years in the making, the SD&G International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) is finally here, offering a great venue for local musicians to showcase their stuff. “We’re both pleased and very proud to announce that Glengarry fiddler, Kelli Trottier, and Stormont-born, Nashville entertainer, Greg Hanna, have been booked and confirmed for the IPM main stage,” says Steve Stang , chair of the IPM entertainment committee. “(We have been) committed, from day-one, to draw exclusively from SDG for the IPM entertainment lineup. Let me sell you on something Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com This week, I’m going to try to sell you on canoes and canoeing. Here goes. A canoe needs only three inches of water, about eight cm, under its keel to float. For those of you unfamiliar with that system of linear measure, that’s about the thickness of an all-dressed hamburger. A canoe paddle is quite satisfied with about a foot of water. For any alien out there, that’s about the height of the grass on my lawn when I’m away for a couple of weeks in August. A typical 16-foot canoe can weigh anywhere between 45 and 75 pounds. Translation for any of you Biblical scholars out there: that’s as much as one talent, or 60 minas. Of course, the
longer the portage, the weight seems to increase in direct proportion to the length, incline and roughness of the portage. Annual maintenance and storage cost for power boats is usually about ten percent of their cost. Therefore, a $50,000 modest cabin cruiser will take at least $5,000 out of your wallet every year. For a canoe: nil. Just hang it from the rafters of your garage. Fuel cost for a power boat: if you think your SUV is a thirsty pig, your power boat is like a herd of pigs. Our 16-foot Kevlar canoe is fossil-powered. My wife and I are two old fossils. For fuel, we require a hearty breakfast, a nice picnic lunch and a relaxing dinner accompanied by ‘a cool one’ at the end of the day. Purchase price for a canoe: a heavy but durable department store one, adequate for use at the
cottage, will set you back something in the low three-digit dollar range. If you want a lighter canoe, made out of Kevlar or some other exotic substance, be prepared to fork over dollars in the low fourdigit range. Don’t forget to get – and use – life jackets. Accessories such as bow and stern lines and a bailer are essential, as are decals. Some decals are free; others cost as much as a daily newspaper. At the present time, our canoe sports a total of 154 decals, 79 on the port side of the hull, 75 on the starboard. The decals include places we’ve been (“MILE ZERO, KEY WEST”, “POWELL RIVER – TWO FERRIES CAN’T BE WRONG”), organizations I belong to (CANADIAN AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY), the Canadian flag, 17 reflective maple or oak tracings I made (for night-time safety), and
‘WOOF’ (in memory of Keesha, 1998-2010). The first decal, the one that started it all, was the website for the superb canoe museum in Peterborough, www.canoemuseum.net. Every canoe eventually must have an appropriate name, one that reflects its provenance and personality. Ours is “Dances With Waves”. My first canoe was a 1963 15-foot cedar strip canvas. During those courting days I’d invite the charming young ladies to go canoeing. Often, they’d be hesitant, but invariably they’d be won over when I’d say, “But my canoe is named ‘AFTER YOU’!” “Really?!! Okay, let’s go.”There was always a look of surprise when they saw the canoe. Apparently the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference is more than just a chance for members of city council to get away from it all. It’s also a place for a few to complain about their lot in life. Specifically, how little they are paid compared to their colleagues around the province. You’ll recall that just last year city council voted itself a whopper of a raise - $75,000 a year for the mayor and $25,000 for councillors. Voters were so incensed that it became an election issue that, arguably, cost the jobs of a few councillors who voted in favour of the increase. Like clockwork, newbies opposed to the raise who wanted a seat at the table (and others who wanted to keep their jobs) made it perfectly clear they would shelve the raise at their first opportunity. So in January the new council voted to go with a cost-of-living increase only, as defined by the consumer price index. At the time the mayor received north of $50,000, while councillors were paid in the neighbourhood of $15,000. Some politicians, it would seem, have a short memory for the theatrics of a year ago, because there was talk among existing councillors about resurrecting the debate. I am told the guy making the most noise was Coun. Brock Frost, who couldn’t believe how little the councillors of Fun City made
compared to people in other parts of the province. Frost, I’m told, approached other Cornwall councillors to see if there would be an appetite for reopening the debate here at home. The volume of rhetoric has since toned down, which tells me Frost might not have enough votes to get the issue returned to the council table for a debate. Insiders suggest it’s not as simple as introducing a motion at an upcoming council meeting, but that proponents of the discussion would require a two-thirds majority of councillors to open the issue again. That means seven votes (Coun. Bernadette Clement is on leave in her quest to become MP) need to be found – and my math suggests Frost and any allies might come up short. While nothing has been confirmed, I’m told those who may vote to reopen the debate include Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and councillors Andre Rivette, Mark MacDonald, Carilyne Hebert, Elaine MacDonald and the aforementioned Frost. That means convincing the likes of councillors David Murphy, Justin Towndale, Claude McIntosh and Maurice Dupelle to vote with them. All four have made specific overtures against massive pay raises, so perhaps the issue won’t ever get off the ground. As former mayor Bob Kilger said last year, there’s no good time to discuss the salary of elected officials. Ask any voter and they will tell you that a politician makes too much – it’s just the way it goes. That being said, last year’s city council
got it wrong on a few fronts. Like I’ve said before, everyone deserves a raise – but the massive hike discussed last year was too much, too soon. The bigger issue, though, for councillors last year was the terrible timing of the debate. The vote for the massive pay hike took place in July, with an election just weeks away in October. Voters have short memories, but not that short. If councillors then had shelved the debate, and voted on a raise this year, of course people would have been angry – but it would take more than three years to exercise that anger and vote any particular member out of office. By that time the electorate will have moved on to something else and ‘forgotten’ about the increase. If councillors are considering returning
to the debate now, given the antics of the last year or so, it looks even worse. My advice, as a taxpayer and a guy who sits at the media table is this – if council compensation is so egregious to existing members of council they can do a couple of things. The first one is simple: quit. Lots of people quit jobs they are dissatisfied with. The other more palatable option would be to put the issue back on the table for the next council to discuss in early 2019 (the election is in the fall of 2018). We were told, by way of that vote in January, that council compensation has been dealt with for this term, for better or worse. Any more public discussion on the subject will only be perceived in a negative light.

Getting rid of unwanted babies is killing: reader away. I can’t imagine how difficult that would be for any woman. People will argue that it’s just a clump of cells or a blob of tissue, but women know deep inside… our bodies begin to change, and in a planned pregnancy, the mother calls those “cells” her baby from the get-go. This whole philosophy of getting rid of
unwanted babies rather than protecting them is upside down. It continues with euthanasia, getting rid of burdensome elderly and sick people instead of providing more and better care for them. We are told repeatedly of the need to protect the environment…but not tiny babies. Where indeed are we headed? Marilyn Bergeron, Cornwall
Thanks for the bike lanes
Editor: I want to thank the City of Cornwall for our bike lanes. While I know some have commented/reported that they (especially the ones on Second Street) are taking away a drivung lane nor ‘used very much’, I would ask them to try and travel around the city on a Mobility conveyance without said lanes (& I seem to see a greater number using them than has been reported). After dodging drainage/access covers, a few cyclists riding against the flow of traffic, parked vehicles and the many drivers who seem to take great delight in trying to either
cut me off or roar by so closely to me that I am wondering how I still have mirrors, I heave a great sigh of relief when I arrive at a bike lane. Yes, I obey the same laws as when I am driving the car, I have a ‘slow-moving’ triangle on the back of my mobility trike and am very aware of all that is around me but I know how a split second of inattention can produce terrible results - we all have them. All of this is to say “Thank you, City of Cornwall” for assisting those of us to keep a part of our independence and safety. We who use the bike lanes (& paths) appreciate them! S. Wigle, Cornwall

meet them in Glen Walter and the good guys or the bad guys would get in with him so the fans wouldn’t see them all arriving at the arena in the same vehicle. After the matches they would all get together at the old Grand Hotel for a few laughs and pops. In 1959 Miron left Cornwall for the United States and a job with Washington of the Eastern Hockey League. His big break came when Toronto Maple Leafs promoted him to Tulsa of the Central Professional Hockey League. Tulsa was where the Leafs placed some of their top young prospects. Much later he moved to the Oklahoma Blazers. He had close ties to the Leafs when George “Punch” Imlach was coach and general manager (last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup). Imlach played senior hockey in Cornwall during WW 11 and made friends in the city, Miron among them. On a couple of occasions, three hockey men from Cornwall were seated at the Leafs’ draft table with Imlach - Miron along with scouts Frank Mario and Gerry Brown. In 2004, Miron was honoured with the prestigious Lester Patrick Trophy, given for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux are among the recipients. Not bad for a guy who grew up at Brennan’s Corners. Ray Miron died last Friday. He was 92. Miron’s brother Hubert still lives in Cornwall and another brother Gerard, passed away a few years ago at age 84. TRIVIA ANSWER Cornwall Civic Complex was officially opened in October, 1976.

It took two words to ramp up Ray Miron’s blood pressure: Don Cherry. The flamboyant Hockey Night in Canada mouthpiece was part of Miron’s hockey life for one single, solitary season, but for the Cornwall native who grew up in the east end during the Great Depression, it was akin to a life sentence in purgatory. Miron was general manager of the Colorado Rockies; Cherry was the team’s fourth head coach is as many years. It was the 1979-80 season. Hiring Cherry, terminated by the Boston Bruins, was not Miron’s idea. Ownership saw Cherry as a marketing tool that could be married to the team’s fresh message plastered on billboards around Denver, “Come to the fights and watch a Rockies game break out”. It could have been written by Cherry. The feud between Cherry and Miron centred around goaltender Hardy Astrom. Cherry called him the “Swedish Sieve”. Miron refused to trade him just for the sake of trading. But it went deeper than the “Swedish Sieve” thing. Miron, like Harry Sinden in Boston, quickly tired of the Cherry circus. At season’s end, Miron fired Cherry with ownership’s blessing. In an odd twist, the firing launched Cherry’s TV career. As Hubert Miron said, Cherry should have thanked his brother (for firing him). After Miron’s fifth season, the Rockies were sold and moved to New Jersey ... without Miron. Miron, who had been working in hockey as a
coach and general manager, and sometimes both, since 1952, re-invented himself as co-owner of the Central Hockey League that started play with six teams in 1992. It was a unique concept. The successful league was sold to sports guru Horn Chen in 2000 for a pile of Greenbacks and Miron retired from hockey. His name was given to the league championship trophy. For Miron, the path to the NHL started in the cramped manager’s office of the old Cornwall Community Arena, when it was owned by the private sector and operated on a shoe-string budget. In 1953 he took over a senior team called the Falcons. Then the Colts and finally the Chevies. This was the six-team NHL era and the calibre of local senior hockey was not far removed from Prime Time. In their last season, 1958-59, the Chevies took the Whitby Dunlops to six games before bowing out. The Dunlops were the world champions with a line-up that could have held its own in the NHL. Miron used offseason things like an annual $10 a plate dinner at the Hotel Cornwallis along with pro wrestling and the popular Country Hoedown contest that showcased local musical talent to help pay the bills. He also came up with the annual Wednesday night $2 a seat win-a-car night. For two bucks you got to see the game and a chance to win a new Chevrolet. He even managed to get the Chicago Black Hawks to play an exhibition game against his senior club at the Water Street Arena. Chicago, using its regular season line-up, won 5-2. He told the story of how the rasslers travelled to Cornwall from Montreal in one car. He would

CORNWALL, Ontario - A London, Ont. cop who has strong Cornwall roots has taken an anti-bullying message viral - in both official languages. Sandasha Ferguson (nee Bough), who grew up in Cornwall, is a school safety officer with the London service. Part of her duties includes educating young people on the dangers of bullying. She had an idea late last year to combine her love of singing with an anti-bullying message. What resulted was the completion of a music video that has already garnered thousands of hits on YouTube and also caught the attention of media in her new hometown. And after the song was recently translated and rerecorded in French, she can reach a new demographic. “One of the French school boards here in London really wanted to use it in their schools,” she said. “The school board paid for the song to get translated and the new words fit with the music.” The music video for ‘You’re a VIP’ is directed mainly at young people, especially those who finds themselves in the cross hairs of bullying at school via the Internet. But there’s also a message for adults. “Adults deal with (bullying) on a regular

Ian and Chad Macintosh have not fished a tournament together in 26 years, but that didn’t stop them from landing 16.5 pounds of fish at the Lake St. Francis Walleye Tournament, sponsored by the South Lancaster Fish and Game club. The pair won the tournament, which is strictly catch and release.
The U13G Seaway Valley Blazers competed in the Annual Cameron Memorial soccer tournament in Trenton and came home with gold. The girls played five tough games throughout the tournament, conceding only one goal. What’s on your sporting bucket list? Thom Racine Ever wish you could attend a sporting event of major significance? Like say, Sunday at the Masters or a game seven somewhere. Today, it makes up part of our Bucket List. Now, while I still have a shot at either of the above, believe it or not a Barclay’s Premiership game is high on my list too. I have been lucky enough to be at a No hitter, Charlie Lea against the Giants on May 10, 1981, the same day the Royals one their second Memorial Cup beating Kitchener 8-2 in Windsor. Heck, that would be pretty cool to have
seen too. Last week while vacationing in Quebec, I happened upon a neat question asked to listeners to a talk radio show. If you could attend a past sporting event, as in, wish you had been there, what event would it be? For me, it was a pretty easy, as in, I didn’t have to think very long. Reason being, I have thought many times of this question, because I have watched so many events and simply wished I had been at so many of them. For an avid sports historian buff, I could name several games and events from the past 120 years, but decided I should make my list from my lifetime.
So, here is my top three ‘retro’ bucket list, followed by a few others. The Summit series September 1972, game 8 in Russia has always been a place I wish I could have been. What it must have been like that night, being a Canadian in truly hostile environs. Mike Weir’s march up the back nine at Augusta in 2003, making all those par saving putts to hang on and win in a playoff. Any Ottawa Rough Riders game from 1960 through 1966, so I could actually see my Dad kicking in a CFL game. I can only listen to the stories about Moe The Toe, it would be so neat to actually watch him kick.It is impossible to
leave it at just three, so I have aded a few more. 1980 Lake Placid’s Miracle on Ice - Sidney Crosby’s Golden Goal in Vancouver 2010 - The Ladies come back last year in Socci, how impossible that seemed to be with a few minutes left - 1982 Cal State vs. Stanford known as the beat the band game. That finish is still fun to watch. How about Wayne Gretzky? I suppose any game would do, but the night he eclipsed Gordie Howe’s points mark against his Oilers must have been fun. Local minor hockey gets ‘crossed’ up - and loves it Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – A pilot project undertaken by the local minor hockey association will see more ice time and hopefully a deeper skill set for young Cornwall and area players. The Cornwall Minor Hockey Association will act as home base for a Novice Cross Ice Four on Four project in September that will see young players playing the width of the rink, instead of the length. It will mean more games can take place on any given sheet (three in this case) and players will enjoy more time passing, shooting and scoring instead of chugging up and down the length of the rink.
“This kind of system is really big in the U.S. and Europe,” said CMHA president Pat McLeod. “The stats are phenomenal. “Hockey is the only sport where (young people) play on the same size of rink as (adults). In basketball it is a half-court, in volleyball they bring the nets down.” And the results are impressive. Online statistics show there as many as six times more shots on goal per player, five time more passes received, twice as many shot attempts per player and double the number of puck touches per player. “When you’re looking at how we can continue to develop our young players, this is the way to do it,” he said. Specialized boards have been donated by Hockey Eastern Ontario Minor District 2 so that a sheet of ice at the Benson Centre in Cornwall can be split into three. District 2 includes teams from Akwesasne, Alexandria, Char-Lan, South Stormont and NGS and McLeod said novice teams from all
communities will send teams to take part in the project. It’s unlikely that Cross Ice will be attempted again during the regular season, as ice time commitments are being finalized. McLeod said the project is being done in September for novice players as part of a preseason initiative.
Who’s-who in world curling in Cornwall for Shorty Jenkins Classic result in as much as $500,000 in economic spinoffs for Cornwall. And there’s also hope that the event could return to Cornwall in the future. The Brockville Recorder and Times reported this week that there is no guarantee the event will be hosted again in that city. The newspaper added over the years the tournament has attracted Olympians and world-renowned competitors with the likes of Brad Jacobs and Rachel Homan, who can all call themselves Shorty Jenkins champions as well. “It’s an honour for us to even be considered,” said John Dilabio, a fixture at the Cornwall club. “They could have easily said they were going to go the other way and go to Kingston. But they needed a six-sheeter, and we have a six-sheeter.” The six-sheet Cornwall club was built years ago to host just such an event, and Dilabio said local officials couldn’t be happier. “There’s very few clubs that can say they have hosted a World Curling Tour event. So it’s huge,” he said. Officials estimate the four-day bonspiel will

CORNWALL, Ontario - Brockville’s loss is Cornwall’s gain now that a technical glitch has forced a world-class curling event to move to the Seaway City. Shorty Jenkins Classic chair Gord McCrady announced last week in Brockville the annual bonspiel that brings in names like Glenn Howard, Jeff Stoughton, and Brad Gushue will not be hosted at the Brockville Country Club because of a broken compressor. The event, running Sept. 17 to 20, will instead be played at the Cornwall Curling Centre instead of Brockville, where it has found at home for the last 18 years.
Sweden, Great Britain and here in North America will descend on Cornwall for the event. Tickets will be made available to spectators who want to enjoy the bonspiel in person. “Tickets will be sold at the door. But you will also be able to buy a pass for the weekend,” he said. More information is expected to be released in the days ahead as local organizers get ramped up to host bonspiel. Dilabio said CCC board members officially approved the decision to host the event at a meeting last Tuesday night.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For Rick Laverty and Buck Buchanan, it’s an annual hockey tradition. The season ticket holders make it a point to never miss the Jr. A Cornwall Colts in action at the Ed Lumley Arena. Laverty takes the drive from south of Montreal to meet his pal, and after nearly five years, Rick Hicks has joined the mix for the 2015-16 Central Canada Hockey League season. “It’s the best hockey in town,” said Hicks. Laverty and Buchanan agreed. “These young players are superb,” added Laverty. The trio had the opportunity to get to know both the Colts and the Midget AAA Colts at a meet & greet for season ticket holders and sponsors at Shoeless Joe’s in Cornwall on Saturday (August 29). Netminder James Edwardson greeted dozens of loyal supporters with sincere appreciation. After three years, this is his final season with the team. “We finished second round in the playoffs last year...it would be great to make it to the third this time and compete for another Bogart (Cup),” he said. The Colts hosted their first combined Junior/Midget AAA training camp, which
kicked off with a fitness testing at the Benson Centre on Friday (August 21). The annual intrasquad scrimmage offered fans a glimpse of what’s in store for the club’s 24th CCHL season, as teammates squared off against each other on Thursday (August 27). The ‘White’ squad defeated their ‘Blue’ opponents with a convincing 5-2 victory. The training camp wraps on Sunday (August 30) at the Ed Lumley Arena, when the Jr. A Colts square off against the Hawks at 2 p.m., and the Midget AAA Colts play the Hawks at 5 p.m. “It’s quick, but it’s an opportunity for them to bond as a team,” said David Murphy, marketing and promotions. “We’d like to thank Shoeless Joe’s for being a major sponsor. It’s a great partnership.” The new CCHL season schedule has been released, and for Cornwall it will include three showcase games, starting on Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. with a contest against the Pembroke Lumber Kings. On Sept. 6, Cornwall meets Kanata at 4 p.m., and the Colts also play on Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m. against Ottawa. La CNS reçoit la visite d’agriculteurs du Québec La Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) a récemment étendu le rayon d’action de son expertise en accueillant un groupe d’agriculteurs québécois intéressés à la culture de couverture, le drainage souterrain contrôlé et le programme vedette d’assainissement de l’eau (PAE) de la CNS. La visite du 21 août faisait suite à celle que le vice-président de la CNS François St-Amour, la chef d’équipe des ressources forestières Josée Brizard et le représentant du comité d’assainissement de l’eau André Pommainville avaient faite en mars dernier à Lachute afin de mieux faire connaître les programmes et les approches de l’office. Intéressés par ce qu’ils ont entendu, 11 agriculteurs du Québec ont donc décidé de rendre visite à la CNS afin de constater de visu le travail en cours. Après avoir visité les bureaux de l’office à Finch, le groupe s’est rendu à la ferme de Christian Laflèche pour assister à la présentation de David Lapen d’Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada portant sur le drainage souterrain contrôlé. Au cours des dernières années, la CNS a reçu des subventions du gouvernement fédéral pour
étudier l’impact du drainage souterrain contrôlé sur l’utilisation des déchets, la rétention des nutriments, la gestion des intrants et le rendement des cultures. Une modification simple et peu coûteuse au système de drainage agricole permet de contrôler le niveau de rétention de l’eau dans le sol par temps sec ou humide. « Après plusieurs années de recherches sur le drainage souterrain contrôlé, nous sommes devenus des experts dans le domaine » a indiqué Mme Brizard. « Le partage de notre expertise avec des organisations et des agriculteurs fait partie intégrante de notre mandat ». Après le lunch et une visite à la fromagerie de St-Albert, le groupe s’est rendu à la ferme de Marc Bercier à St-Isidore où l’utilisation des cultures de couverture est une pratique courante. Adepte des solutions de rechange au fumier de bétail, M. Bercier a organisé, en juillet dernier, une journée d’information sur les cultures de couverture à laquelle ont assisté de nombreuses personnes. « Les agriculteurs du Québec qualifient les cultures de couverture de fumier vert » a noté

C’est pour cette raison que l’Institut de recherche sur le cerveau de l’Université d’Ottawa organisera le 19 septembre prochain à l’extérieur du pavillon Tabaret l’événement Yoga & Vous. Jusqu’à 300 participants sont attendus pour cette activité de financement. «On souhaite sensibiliser les gens à la
santé cérébrale tant sur les AVC, le Parkinson, la dépression, les maladies neuromusculaires, entre autres. Les recherches ont réussi à montrer que le yoga améliorait la santé des gens qui en souffraient», lance Geneviève Bureau de l’Institut de recherche sur le cerveau de l’Université d’Ottawa. Et le yoga, c’est aussi accessible à tous, tant pour les tout-petits que les plus vieux. La grande popularité de cette activité physique a aussi fait pencher dans la balance.
«On a juste à voir sur la Colline parlementaire les milliers de personnes qui en font.» L’organisation a justement misé sur cette formule, en demandant à Kate Durie du studio Yogatown d’animer la journée. Outre le yoga, d’autres activités seront au rendezvous. On désire atteindre le cap des 100 000$. L’argent sera redistribué dans la recherche. «C’est un objectif ambitieux, mais on sait qu’on est capable de l’atteindre.»
Mme Bureau souligne que les coûts reliées à la santé cérébrale revient à plus de 22 milliards $ par année. Selon des études, d’ici 20 ans, les maladies liées à la sante cérébrale seront la cause de mort numéro un au Canada. La journée du 19 septembre commencera à 8h30 et se terminera en début d’avant-midi. «Les gens pourront même discuter avec les chercheurs pour en découvrir plus sur leurs recherches et leur travail.»

Some golf advice... The scene: you have an important shot to make! Breathe deeply, don’t hold your golf club too tightly, and take your swing with the same rhythm as usual. When done calmly, the result is much better. Be patient, concentrate, and don’t be distracted! It sometimes happens that other players move or talk while you’re getting ready; if that’s the case, stop and begin your preparation again; this will cause them to be quiet and you’ll be able to concentrate better on your shot. Be honest! Don’t cheat, it’s not worth it: you may
perhaps improve your score by two or three shots, but you will lose your reputation. And if you manage to win a tournament by cheating, the complaints will be even bigger, and your reputation will be tarnished for a long time, if not forever. Think positive! Regardless of the obstacle in front of you, whether it’s an enormous sand pit, a lake, or something else, think instead about the green and visualize your ball landing close to the flag. Just pour 1/2 cup baking soda into a drain and follow it with 1/2 cup vinegar. Cover drain for a few minutes as the chemical reaction dissolves the grease - then flush with warm water. Clean your drains this way once per week to prevent clogged drains. Never use this method after trying a commercial drain cleaner, the cleaner could react with vinegar and create dangerous fumes.

Make floors look old by choosing wide planks in varied widths and a scraped or textured finish. A low sheen will make them look oiled and natural, even if they aren’t. Choose light through mid-tones for wood floors – but not bleached and not black. Black is too formal. When it comes to furnishings, antiques that are sturdy and practical, unfinished or gently refinished are best, because their flaws will help relax the room. “And mix in things that don’t match,” suggests Janice Lindsay, of PINK colour + design. Introduce hand-made or artisanal one-of-a-kind objects. Lindsay discourages clients from hanging poster prints of famous works of art, in favour of interesting art objects, especially if they are home made. “Rooms that are put-your-feet-up comfortable will not be special-occasion rooms. They will be every-occasion rooms, which are the best kind of all.”

Yesterday, I had an appointment to see the urologist for a prostate exam. Naturally, I was a bit on edge because all my friends have either “gone under the knife” or had those pellets implanted. The waiting room was filled with patients. As I approached the receptionist’s desk, I noticed the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler. I gave her my name. In a VERY loud voice, the receptionist said “YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE. YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?” As the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at me, a now very embarrased man. But as usual, I recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, “NO, I’VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON’T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR AS YOURS.” The room erupted in applause! Don’t mess around with us retired guys!

A brand new city truck got demolished in an accident this week. Word is another driver went through a red light and clipped the vehicle. The driver of the city vehicle was hospitalized for a short time with injuries, but thankfully no broken bones.
