Seven Nations of Canada seek rights to Dundee land claim Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - In a press conference held at the Best Western in Cornwall, representatives of the Iroquois Seven Nations of Canada announced their interest to participate in the negotiations over the Dundee land claim.
The Iroquois of St. Regis had been a party to the land claim as far back as 1981, but that changed in 1985 with the creation of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA). The Seven Nations feel that those living outside of the MCA’s boundaries were excluded from the negotiations on Dundee.
“The MCA does not exist as far as we are concerned,” said Seven Nations Sub Chief George Adams. “It is a corporation formed through a bylaw in 1985 by the then Grand Chief.” During recent negotiations concerning the Energy East Pipeline, the National Energy Board recognized the Seven Nations as an intervener in

that case. The Iroquois of the Seven Nations now hope that that recognition from the federal government can allow them to parlay a seat at the negotiating table on the Dundee land claim. “We have been fighting for a long time to get our land back,” said Seven Nations of Canada Chief Mike Thomas. “We put an original land claim in 1981. It is now 2016 and something must be done. We have tried a number of times in the past, but the government has not listened to us. We have talked to the government, but they have refused to talk to us.” Michael Krystal is the lawyer for the Seven Nations. He has been practicing law in Canada since 1996 and has a background in aboriginal cases. Krystal hopes that the Seven Nation’s recognition in the Energy East case will translate to their voice being heard on Dundee. He feels that the Seven Nations have a unique perspective that they can bring to the table. “The Seven Nations are cynical about the current MCA negotiations and are worried it is a cash grab,” Krystal said. “They are concerned for the land and they should be at the table because they bring a different perspective. They want that land back.” A part of the on-going land negotiations is a possible $240 million being offered by the government as compensation for the land. When asked their position on co-operating with the MCA on this issue, Krystal said that his clients would be sending them a letter informing them of their interest in joining the negotiations. “As a courtesy to their interest, we have extended an open letter to the MCA as an open hand before we went to the government,” he said. “We are seeking to be partners at the table, because historically we were at the table.” Chief Thomas pointed out that Indian Affairs never approved of the MCA name change that excluded the Iroquois of the Seven Nations of Canada in the first place. “We want to move back and we will move back to our land,” Thomas said. “The government has been ignoring the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which was re-affirmed in ‘94. The Proclamation was designed to protect our lands in negotiations.”

Sue Montgomery tells her story at Children’s Treatment Centre Breakfast
Some of the children supported by Child Haven. After a fun-filled spaghetti dinner, and 10 year reunion, former employees of Domtar were pleased to present the United Way with a donation of $2, 828. Stephanie Lalonde, Lori Greer and Bill Makinson are joined by Micheline Faubert-Irving (second from left) (Marc Benoit, Seaway News).
Cornwall Museum hosts Domtar memories
The mill was a second home and proud workplace to many Cornwall residents. That is why Don Smith and Micheline Faubert-Irving, both former employees of Domtar, were pleased to present the SDG United Way with a cheque for nearly $3, 000, just as they would have in the days when Domtar was operational. The cheque presentation also marks the beginning of a paper mill exhibit, which is now on at the Cornwall community museum. The exhibit displays the historical development of the paper mill industry in Cornwall from its inception in the 1920s as the Howard Smith company, all the way to the final days of Domtar.

Owners of The Soap Shop, Susan Bourck and Lucy Raymond, were amongst the local vendors at Saturday’s Fall Fair Big Event at Salem United Church (Seaway News/Shannon Ferguson). Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Bad weather and rainy conditions did not stop the Salem United Church, located in Summerstown, from hosting a warm and welcoming fundraiser on Saturday afternoon. The Fall Fair Big Event took place in the church’s basement and main level back room, and featured local vendors selling everything from homemade crafts, to vintage clothes, to homemade baked goods. Lancaster’s The Soap Shop was onsite, selling homemade bath bombs and novelty soaps made with all natural ingredients. Owner Susan Bourck was enjoying her first time at the fair. “I love it! A lot of people have been coming in and everyone is very friendly. You have the whole community coming out today and it’s really nice to see”.
The church’s basement was filled with shoppers, visitors, and those grabbing a bite to eat from the canteen. President of the United Church of Women, Arlene Kentell, has been organizing the event for many years was pleased with how many people showed up. “The turnout has been great this year and I think that because it’s been raining people can’t stay home and do their yard work so they’re coming out to enjoy all the great things we’re offering here”. Mia Robertson was attending the fair for the first time and was thoroughly impressed, “What everyone is doing and what is available to buy is so unique and there’s such a great blend of different things” “I am happy we came and I would definitely come back next year” she added. In its 38th year, the Fall Fair is held annually to raise money for the quaint church along Highway 2, which formed its union in 1925.

* An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior measures (Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-innoise situations applying advanced features such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield. ** Primax has the complete set of premium features and powered by binax. Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Horzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

Purple wave against child abuse hits Cornwall Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Vieux Duluth Cornwall hosted the Children’s Aid Society on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as they raised awareness fo the prevention of child abuse. Students, and volunteers, all wearing purple, served guests at the restaurant, who in turn paid donations to the Children’s Aid Society. The kids also started an open mic at around 4:30 p.m. and entertained the guests while they ate their dinner. At 1:15 p.m. the crowd gathered at Vieux Duluth took part in their annual Breaking the
Silence bag popping event. The Boom 104.5FM was on hand to broadcast the pop, which was heard by listeners who took an active part in the event as well. This included students at Holy Trinity, 270 of whom had bags of their own to pop simultaneously at 1:15 p.m. Supporters of the Children’s Aid Society were encouraged to login and view the bag popping live on Facebook. This is the first year that the Children’s Aid Society held its three events, the bag popping, the wearing purple and the serving of food on the same day at the same place. All proceeds raised by the event go to helping kids in the community go to area camps in the summer.
Kelly Vincent and Janell Forget, a Grade 10 student at La Citadelle, help the Children’s Aid Society serve some delicious food at Vieux Duluth on Wednesday, October 19 (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

This incident raised concerns because the groomer, being on a skidoo and wearing a helmet, could not hear the shooting. Couture emphasized though that he felt hunters were important partners in the trails because hunters, like the FOTST, understand and value conservation.

CORNWALL, Ontario - At their meeting on Oct. 17, the United Counties of SD&G agreed to a staff recommendation to keep guns off of the Summerstown Trail from Dec. 15 to March 15. The move comes from concerns over people firing guns on the trails during peak visitor season. “It has been a worrying problem,” said Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) President Paul Couture. “Our biggest issue hasn’t been with hunters per se, but with people bringing rifles into the trails. Unfortunately, hunters got caught up in the net to restrict firearms on the trails.” Couture said that there had been a few incidents with firearms over the years. He said that the police were once called in 2011 over people firing their guns in the Trail’s parking lot near

Incroyable! OPINION
Having God on your side I know God can/does work in mysterious ways, but it is hard to believe that a foul-mouth trash talker who never spent much time warming a church pew and who when challenged in a television interview couldn’t come up with a single Bible verse, after claiming the Bible was his favourite book, would have The Almighty in his election campaign corner. Nevertheless, some, not all, United States evangelicals believe that divine intervention will lift Donald Trump, who has never displayed an ounce of faith, to the Oval Office, and that God will use The Donald to put American back on the straight and narrow. Talk about an election being rigged. Of course, with The Donald sinking in the polls a couple of weeks before America votes, it could be argued that he is in need of divine intervention to pull it off. And if he doesn’t? Might mean God changed his mind. ************************ The Toronto Sun asked readers to give their Hydro One bill horror tales. And did they get them! “I’m afraid to open my hydro bill,” said one. “I pay $110 more per month than a year ago, and my usage hasn’t increased,” said a senior citizen. A single mom said, “We literally live in the dark. I try to save on energy costs by going to my mom’s once a week ... and still my bill is sky high.” Another told of an elderly neighbour who goes to the malls during hot summer days. When he offered to buy her an air conditioner, she turned him down because she couldn’t afford to pay for the extra usage. A single mother of five said the premier has no idea what it is like to use food money to pay a hydro bill that keeps climbing. Then there was the twit from Hamilton who wondered what all the fuss was about. He bragged that he ran his AC all June and July and his bill for the two months was $114. Turned out

OH REALLY When reminded by a CNN reporter of Trump’s offensive language that was caught on tape, a Republican official from Kansas pointed out that Trump is “not running for Pope” and besides, “most men will talk about women in ways they would never talk publicly.” IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR When household appliances - fridge, stove, washer - were built (in Canada) to last 25 years and you didn’t need to purchase an extended warranty. ... When elementary schools sometimes failed a pupil who had to repeat the year. ... ... When school boards were building schools, not closing them. ... A time when educators believed that small neighbourhood schools were better and it wasn’t good for young students to spend hours riding a school bus to and from school. ... The rural one-room school. ... The not so great schoolyard experience of teams being picked from two lines. Hey, somebody had to be last pick. ... The annual visit to the classroom by the school inspector who would sit at the back of the classroom taking notes while a nervous teacher tried to pretend it was just another day. ... Writing 100 lines of “I shall not talk in class.” ... Typing and home economics classes (sewing and cooking). ... Catholic boys and girls schools. ... Strict nuns and brothers who taught in Catholic schools and smacked you for doing something wrong. One particularly strict brother earned the nickname “Brother Bellringer”. A friend recalled that the nuns in her school believed that no one except God was perfect; so the highest mark was
99%. ... The 20-year-old elementary school teacher who two years earlier was a high school student. Few elementary school teachers had university degrees. ... Vinyl records played on phonographs. SPORTS STUFF Last week there were 7,000 empty seats at the Canadian Tire Centre for the Senators-Coyotes contest. And on Saturday, against Tampa Bay, there were 3,000 empty seats. Both games drew fewer fans than Florida’s Saturday night game against Colorado. ... It’s a bull market for secondary ticket sellers (website scalpers) in Cleveland and Chicago, where the World Series is being played. The average price for a Indians’ series ticket is $3,500, but in World Series starved Chicago, the average price for a ticket to Wrigley Field is $6,600. ... Note to the United Church of Canada: You have a reasonable case when it comes to ditching the “offensive” Cleveland Indians’ mascot, but over the years many First Nations’ lacrosse teams have called themselves Indians. Some of the best St. Regis/ Akwesasne lacrosse teams used the moniker Indians. ... If the World Series needs a seventh game, it will be played Nov. 2 in Cleveland, starting at 8:08 p.m. The average night-time high for that date in Cleveland is 48F. Both home fields are open-air stadiums. The record low for Nov. 2 is a frosty 2F. ON FINAL THOUGHT Re: Federal government plans to restrict advertising of unhealthy food. So, we now have the diet police.

he was leaving out the added charges (delivery, etc.) ... and that he is an Ontario Liberal staffer working for a cabinet minister. The now informed, and concerned, Preem Kathy is swinging into action, just in time for the 2018 election. The Liberals plan to purchase cheaper power from Quebec Hydro despite the fact that Ontario, in some instances, pays New York State and Michigan utilities to take our surplus power. Hard to blame all of this on Mike Harris. ************************ ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN The closed Second Street and Brookdale Avenue intersection is on its fifth re-opening date after being shutdown for most of September. It was to re-open Sept. 30, then Oct. 7 before being pushed back to Oct. 14, when it didn’t open. There was some hope that it would re-open on Oct. 18 but that became “perhaps” Oct. 21. It’s still closed. The new re-opening date is Nov. 4. Don’t bet on it. HERE AND THERE Three things they’re still looking for - the Ark, the Holy Grail and Stephen Harper’s hidden agenda. ... Like him or dislike him, one thing you have to give Donald Trump credit for is the great job he did raising his four oldest kids. Unlike many of the dysfunctional Hollywood families and their druggie, boozie brats, the Trump kids are model citizens. They don’t drink, smoke or do drugs. ... Interesting tidbit on Peter Mansbridge, Canada’s best-known news anchor: he didn’t finish high school and he started out working as a regional airline ticket agent/cargo loader in Churchill, Man. after what he calls an “exciting but relatively unsuccessful stint in the Royal Canadian Navy.” TRIVIA ANSWER Smith Transport was on Second Street West just east of Westmoreland Avenue. In the late 1960s, Smith took over Norman’s Transfer, which was established in 1927 and carried goods to and from Montreal for Howard Smith Paper Mill, TCF, Canada Cottons and Provincial Paper Mill (Mille Roches) and Pfizer. TRIVIA This much respected Roman Catholic parish priest was Cornwall’s first Citizen of the Year in 1972. He was Lancaster citizen of the year in 1996.

I don’t want my children crammed into CCVS To All Who Will Listen, I sit here in front of my computer with a blank page. It has taken me this long to write, not because I don’t have anything to say but because I am so overwhelmed with all the things I want to say. I will tell you upfront I do not agree with the UCDSB decision to close Longue Sault Public School and the High School end of RothwellOsnabruck along with a slew of other high standard schools in the SD&G area. I cannot sit by and watch my children be crammed into a high school that is falling apart and over-capacitated. I cannot sit by and have my children sit on a bus for over an hour. The
length of the ride and the lack of monitoring of the students on the bus make me worry as a mom. I cannot sit by and watch my kids have to possibly change schools three times and maybe never get the benefits of this so called Mega School. I cannot sit by and allow a handful of people use my children as pawns in a game of money, brick and mortar. I don’t understand why our children need to SHOW the ministry how desperate we are for this Mega School when I didn’t sign up for that. I can see there is a problem with too many spaces all across the board but the way the UCDSB is managing this problem sickens me to
stripped of special programs. No wonder people choose other schools. was recently a part of a brainstorming event at Rothwell-Osnabruck and I hope that our solutions will be heard. My children’s education matters just as much as the next generation. I WILL pull them out of the UCDSB if the UCDSB follows through with their “plan” and send them to the coterminous board. I will speak up for my children and this is our stand! MAY OUR VOICES BE HEARD!!!! Sincerely, Haley Taylor Former R-O Graduate and Parent of two children (soon to be three) who attend L.S.P.S.
my core. Parents and Politicians are being told to keep quiet and do what they’re told. The documents for “Building for the Future” are filled with holes and misinformation. How can proper decisions about our children’s future be based on something so wrong? This makes me feel like this document was thrown together with no thought of anyone intelligent reading it. Well people are reading it and are finding all kinds of mistakes. We are an intelligent community with great ideas. Our ideas need to be heard. What about giving our schools funding for better programs that will help increase the student population? I feel our schools have been
Are the Liberals starting to phase out Natural Gas in Ontario On Sept. 27, 2016 the Wynne Liberals stated they will cancel plans to sign new solar, wind and other green energy contracts as we are producing enough hydro in Ontario which will meet our demand for the next decade and we all know Ontario is over producing hydro so how does this 7 year deal with Quebec benefit us at a rumored price of 5 cents a kwh at this point in time when the Liberals have admitted we do not have a energy shortage in Ontario .
How can the Liberals say this deal will save us 70 million dollars over the length of the contract when they are buying hydro from Quebec which is not required at a rumored cost of 1 billion dollars - it is no wonder an Associate Professor and Electricity Market Expert from Quebec had previously stated Ontario probably has the worse energy market in the world. Premier Wynnes answer is she wants to buy clean Quebec Hydro to phase out or lower our
gas power plants production does this make any sense why would the Liberals not use our hydroelectric power to do this and manage the grid in a more efficient way as we pay for 3.2 terawatts of non produced power a year only to buy 2 terawatts of power from Quebec. Ross Ayotte, Smiths Falls, ON

Ontarian’s must question Premier Wynne’s motive to buy hydro from Quebec when on Friday, March 4 2016 the OPG released a report that in 2015 and in 2014 the OPG spilled or diverted water at our hydroelectric dams that would of roughly produced 3.2 terawatts in each of those years which is enough hydro to fully supply 350 thousands homes each of those years and yes we paid for this non produced power.

Quick tips from the Province of Ontario on hiring a contractor informed choices before hiring a consumer sources like the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services’ Consumer contractor: Beware List before selecting your contractor. Keep in mind that the lowest estimate may not be the best. -Get a written contract - Once you select a contractor, make sure they include the estimate as part of your written contract. Consumer Protection Ontario has a checklist of what should be included in your contract. -Changed your mind? - You may be entitled to a cooling-off period. Under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, you can cancel a contract within 10 days if you signed the contract in your home and the price is more than $50.

Residue is the term used for any soap scum, dirt, cleaning chemicals, etc., left on a surface after it’s cleanned. Residue is usually the result of failure to rinse or to rinse enough. On hard surfaces it kills the shine, and on fabric or carpet it acts as a sticky magnet to attract dirt and speed up resoiling. Residue also contaminates and affects the bonding of things we often want to apply after we clean—wax, floor finish, paint, or soil retardant. Most residue is alkaline, so to remove it, a mile acid rinse such as vinegar is what you need.

People pursue Pommier gold CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is all a buzz with excitement. People are anxious to find out if they will be one of the lucky few to win a Pommier Jewelers’ Golden Ticket. There are only 45 tickets to be won and the Golden Ticket is the only way to see the much loved Pommier Jewelers in a whole new way. Golden Ticket winners will be invited into historic Pommiers Jewelers and will be privy to secrets of both jewelry and Cornwall that have never been shared before. The Pommier family has a history in the jewelry business dating back to 1879. In 1937, Armand Pommier brought the family’s tradition of creating exquisite jewelry to Cornwall and his family has stayed here ever since. Some contest entrants are interested in learning about Pommier’s jewelry secrets.
“I can’t wait to find out if I’ve won,” said Ann Wilson. “I want to know what’s Pommier’s secret to making such beautiful pieces of art.” Others were excited to see what plans Pommier had in store for this mysterious event.
With lots of love, Your family xoxo
“Pommier Jewelers has always had a strong attention to detail in all of their work, I can’t wait to see what they have planned,” said an enthusiastic Patricia Mae. “I want one of those tickets, because I’m sure that what Pommier has in store is going to be one-of-a-kind.” However, some just want to win a chance to experience the store in a way that few ever have. “Just to get a chance to go and be surrounded by so much intricately made, beautiful art and local history is something that I could not pass up,” said young 19-year-old Ronald Padavona. Every in-store purchase made between Saturday, Oct. 15 and Monday, Nov. 14 comes with a chance to win a Golden Ticket. Tickets will be drawn on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and the 45 winners will be contacted directly with more information about this mysterious event.

A lady walks into Tiffany’s. She looks around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to look more closely, she unexpectedly farts. Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone noticed her little woops and prays that a sales person was not anywhere near. As she turns around, her worst nightmare materializes in the form of a salesman standing right behind her. Good looking as well. Cool as a cucumber, he displays all of the qualities one would expect of a professional in a store like Tiffany’s. He politely greets the lady with, “good day, madam... How may we help you today?” Blushing and uncomfortable, but still hoping that the salesman somehow missed her little ‘incident’, she asks, “sir, what is the price of this lovely bracelet??” He answers, “madam... If you farted just looking at it, you’re going to s**t when I tell you the price.”
I can connect you. Give me a call!
